Children’s determination to transform Victoria Park

Young pupils from St Andrew’s School in Citadel Road, Plymouth worked hard for weeks to provide a range of wildlife facilities in Victoria Park - and they were all delighted when the work was completed, as this photo shows. Sadly, just a couple of weeks later the children were devastated to discover that other youngsters had vandalised some of the bird feeders and flowers.

Work set to start on Mannamead Road

Youngsters help bring wildlife to city centre park

Improvements to junctions on one of the busiest roads in Plymouth are now underway.

The Mannamead Road Junction Improvement Scheme is set to get underway.

Modern and efficient signals will be installed at a number of junctions along the route with the aim of reducing traffic delays between Torr Lane and Mutley Plain, reducing journey times for motorists and improving service reliability for buses.

As well as replacing worn out and outdated traffic signals, the scheme will also address road safety with upgrades to pedestrian crossings and by providing better facilities for cyclists.

Work was due to start as the Chronicle went to press and is expected to last for around five months.

As part of the scheme, the layout of the junction of Torr Lane and Mannamead Road will be improved and new Toucan pedestrian and cycle crossings provided. A new off-road shared pedestrian and cycle lane between Torr Lane and the Manadon junction will also be provided.

Meanwhile, 13 on-street parking spaces, which are currently restricting traffic flow on the approach to Mutley Plain, will be removed.

Eight replacement spaces will be provided, split between College Avenue and Connaught Avenue, while Mutley Barracks car park will be free for the first hour during the day and also from 8pm every night.

The main construction work will take place between 7.30am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and on the occasional Saturday morning between 7.30am and 1pm.

Work will start at the Torr Lane junction before moving onto the junctions further south. However it should be noted that works will be taking place along the length of Mannamead Road (and in particular between Torr Lane and Seymour Road) throughout the construction period.

Whilst every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum whilst work is taking place, temporary three-way lights will be required at various locations throughout the construction period to allow the existing signals to be replaced. Every effort will be made to have only one set of temporary lights in operation at a time and they will be manually operated during busy times of the day to minimise disruption.

The southbound bus lane from Russell Avenue to Torr Lane will be closed from late September for around one month. The northbound bus lane from Whiteford Road to Hartley Road will be closed from late August for around three months. It is expected that all bus stops on Mannamead Road will remain open throughout the works.

It will also be necessary to close the entrance and exit of Torr Lane, at its junction with Mannamead Road, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, for three days at the end of September. Suitable diversions will be in place during this closure.

The scheme is estimated to cost around £1.7 million, with over £1 million being provided by the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership.

It is part of a masterplan of highway improvements that will help unlock development and help deliver new jobs and homes in the north of the city, complementing other transport schemes along the Northern Corridor including the recently completed Outland Road Junction Improvement Scheme and Derriford Transport Scheme.

A group of children from a city primary school have played their part in bringing more wildlife to a local park – but were devastated when their efforts were vandalised a few weeks later.

Michelle Quintrell, who is chair of the Victoria Park Community Project had appealed for help from the community to improve the environment of the popular park.

When Lucy Mann, a teacher at St Andrew’s Primary School in Citadel Road, heard about the appeal, she arranged for pupils to add their support as part of her Year Three curriculum.

On a recent visit, the children not only filled the park’s train shaped planter with bee loving flowers, they also placed some unusual bird feeders and bug hotels they had made in class. But without a doubt their crowning glory was a stunning butterfly mosaic now gracing a park wall.

Sadly, sometime overnight between July 16 and 17 a number of the bird feeders were damaged, flowers uprooted and the trainshaped planter was also vandalised.

Lucy said: “Some of the children came into school and said they had been playing in the park the night before and discovered the damage. They were really upset and some of them were crying as well. It’s so sad that all their hard work has been spoiled by this mindless action.”

Lucy said: “The children loved creating everything, and my sincere thanks go to Topps Tiles and Johnstone’s for paint. It was a heartwarming community effort from start to finish, just so disappointing that it ended like this.

Michelle said: “I would love to have had Lucy as my teacher. The children were buzzing with enthusiasm, so we are all gutted that their efforts have been so upset by what has happened.

“We have been told that the damage was caused by a group of very young children - possibly only seven or eight years old themselves. We will be checking the CCTV at the cafe in the park to see if they can be identified.

“We will also be reporting it to the police and e-mailing local primary schools whose pupils might have been involved. It’s difficult to imagine what the motive was. At the end of the day it’s criminal damage, but there are obviously a lot more serious crimes for the police to deal with.

improve the park we have done our very best to involve the local community - and schools have been a big part of this.

“We are able to supply materials if the school can dedicate the time with their pupils as part of the curriculum - just like St Andrew’s Primary did.”

She said that thankfully the mosaic butterfly - which had taken many hours to produce - had escaped the damage.

“Everything can be repaired and restored,” said Michelle. “It’s just such a shame that youngsters can’t appreciate the value of a great community asset like Victoria Park.

“We have achieved so much since we launched the improvement scheme and we

are even more determined to keep going,” added Michelle.

Family Fun Day Fund raising is an important element for the Park project and Michelle said that they are planning another Family Fun Day on August 18 with the aim of raising money in aid of HeartSWell, so that a defibrillator can be provided at the cafe.

Michelle said that there will be plenty for the family to do, include bouncy castle, archery attack, craft stalls, cake stalls, games and a treasure hunt. The event starts at 11am and finishes at 4pm.

“We hope lots of families will come along and enjoy the occasion,” she said.

A pair of nuisance neighbours have been evicted from their property by Plymouth Magistrates after a sustained campaign of anti-social behaviour.

School pupils get creative with sculpture workshops Schoolchildren have been getting creative in a series of educational workshops inspired by the plan to build a giant bronze sculpture in Plymouth.

Art and drama workshops have been held in 13 schools near to the Theatre Royal Plymouth where the city’s new sculpture will be positioned.

More than 300 Key Stage 2 pupils have been involved in designing their own 3D sculptures, while a further 300 have been taking part in drama workshops themed around dynamic movement.

The educational workshops are part of a programme of community engagement projects in the build up to the sculpture’s arrival this winter.

The aim is to educate and engage local children in what is an exciting new piece of contemporary art for Plymouth.

In addition, the design and artistic process in creating the sculpture will also be used as a springboard for activities with students from City College Plymouth, Plymouth University and Plymouth College of Arts in further workshops later this term.

Recently it was the turn of youngsters at High Street Primary School to get their creative juices flowing. Working in groups, the Key Stage 2 pupils chose an iconic Plymouth subject to create as a 3D sculpture using scrap pieces of card, textiles, buttons, feathers and other recycled materials.

Routeways are working in partnership with Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Argyle Community Trust and Horizons Plymouth to deliver a broad range of short break activities for disabled children over the summer holidays.

It’s been recognised that families may have additional needs if they are bringing up a disabled child and that the children and young people may need extra support to be able to take part in activities and would not cope in a mainstream holiday club.

Routeways have been providing support for families in Plymouth since 1997 and work closely with Plymouth City Council to deliver services for disabled children and their families. As well as the short breaks Routeways provide an inclusion brokerage service helping families to engage their disabled children into mainstream holiday activities.

Summer of fun for children with additional needs The exciting partnership will provide a fun packed summer of activities for children with additional needs.

Activities on offer include Moorland survival days, football and multi-sports programme, sailing, forest school, wonderful wildlife, gorge walking and a pirate training academy.

These services are specifically for disabled children and access is not dependent on a formal assessment.

Sessions are open to children attending special schools or, who are known to inclusion services or who are recognised as having an autistic spectrum condition, particularly with associated challenging behaviour or learning difficulties and those with sensory and/or physical impairments.

Plymouth City Council’s Community Connections Team applied for a closure order on Flat 5, 32 Grand Parade after work in partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police, which the Magistrates granted for a period of three months.

Tenants Jody Carthy and Julian Jones did not contest the hearing. It follows months of anti-social behaviour at the address, which the court heard was being used for the supply and use of Class A drugs.

There was also a high level of violent crime linked to the address. The court heard that the behaviour at the address was affecting quality of life of those living nearby, who feared for their safety, and was also having a detrimental impact on local businesses.

The order forms part of an ongoing crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour in the city.

Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We are fully committed to working with our partners to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and create a safer Plymouth and this closure order shows that we are not afraid or reticent to take tough action.”

The council encourages residents who face similar issues not to suffer in silence. Residents can report problems with anti-social behaviour completely anonymously by calling either Police 101 or the Safer Communities Team on 01752 307049.

Rise in young people contacting Childline with eating disorders

Eating disorders are becoming a major issue for teenagers across the country.

With thousands of young people contacting Childline with concerns about how they look, as well as many others suffering in silence, it’s clear that this is a problem effecting many.

It comes as new figures from the NSPCC show that nearly 6,000 counselling sessions have been carried out by Childline about eating disorders over the last year.

Worryingly, this includes children and young people from the South West of England.

Of course there are a myriad of reasons why young people may be worrying about their weight.

Many of those contacting Childline, which provides counselling online or over the phone seven days a week through a dedicated team of volunteers, have been saying the pressures of social media have led them to avoiding certain food types or restricting what they eat.

They’ve also been comparing themselves to others on social media and looking at ways to lose weight.

This has led to fears that they could go on to develop anorexia or bulimia, with both their mental and physical health suffering.

With body image and eating disorders clearly effecting young people’s mental health, the NSPCC’s Are You There? campaign is calling on the UK Government to invest some of the £300 million it has committed for children’s mental health services towards early support services such as Childline.

It’s hoped that this could be a lifeline for those struggling to cope with the pressures they’re facing and will mean they can get access to support when they need it the most.

British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Each year, six professional display firework companies are selected by a draw to take part, and despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997. In addition to the dazzling display of fireworks, there is entertainment on the Hoe including a fun fair Fred Pearce rediscovers what conservation should really be about. He explores ecosystems old and new - from Pacific islands to the Australian outback to the Thames estuary - and reveals that our ideas about ‘the balance of nature’ are now seriously outdated. In an era of climate change and widespread damage, the dynamism of alien species and the novel ecosystems they can create can help nature to regenerate. Well known regional chefs from some of the best restaurants in the South West, will be showing off their culinary skills in the special Cookery Theatre. There is also the return of the fantastic Cardboard Boat Race, which will be on Commercial Wharf on Saturday. Bushcraft for kids Aug 15 - 17 Saltram. A wild adventure walkabout, children become part of a tribe and learn some survival, bushcraft, wilderness and navigations skills. The day will begin making a shelter using only what is available from the woods. Next comes fire lighting, one of the most exciting parts of the day. You will be practising various survival techniques, this will include making traps and snares, cam and con, a man hunt and much much more. Tickets £18.50 per child, age 6+. Booking essential.

Work starts on Efford playing pitches A much-needed makeover of Higher Efford Playing Pitches has begun.

Contractor Agripower is now on site with heavy machinery to transform the tired facilities and ensure that they are fit for future generations.

As part of the work, the two current junior surfaces will be fitted with better drainage whilst the disused field at the former Plym Valley View Primary School will be transformed into two mini soccer pitches.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: “I am pleased

to see work get underway here at Higher Efford.

Community sports facilities are crucial to our goal of encouraging more people to become active and I look forward to seeing people of all ages use this facility when it has finished.”

Higher Efford is just one of several pitches across the city to be improved as part of the Plymouth Plan for Playing Pitches.

In Central Park, the existing rugby pitch will be regraded and two junior pitches and an artificial cricket wicket added while Bond Street will benefit from new surfaces to replace two existing poor

quality pitches that have been out of action for some time due to water-logging.

The Plan for Playing Pitches, which is backed by the Devon Junior & Minor League, Sport England and the Football Association, will tackle an overall shortfall in playing pitch provision across the city as well as a shortfall in the quality of many of the existing pitches.

A group of young people from Plymouth’s Mutley Greenbank Trust visited Parliament to have a question and answer session with their Member of Parliament, Luke Pollard who represents Plymouth Sutton and Devonport.

Before meeting up with Plymouth’s Labour MP to share their thoughts about politics, they went on a tour to learn the history behind the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Palace of Westminster.

The youngsters, ranging from 13 to 19 asked Luke about his views on a number of political issues. Questions ranged from funding for schools and youth groups, to young people’s mental health and some of the older members asked what could be done for those struggling to find work after they left school.

As well as answering questions, Luke asked them for their opinions on how to deal with the issues they raised and encouraged them to get active in politics and use their voices to make change.

Luke Pollard MP said: “I am continuously impressed with how clued up Plymouth’s young people are when it comes to politics. The young people from Mutley Greenbank Trust asked some really probing questions around funding for schools, youth and mental health services.

“For too long young people have been given a poor deal and let down by Government. I want to see young people have their voices heard by politicians so they can’t be ignored.

“That is why I support lowering the voting age for 16 and 17 year olds as well as properly funding,

schools, youth groups and young people’s mental health services.”

“It’s vital young people in Plymouth and around the UK feel empowered to stand up for themselves by voting in elections and getting involved in politics in their local communities. I was proud to meet such an engaged group of young people from Plymouth who are so passionate about improving things for young people in our city.”

Put your bins out on the right day and at the right time – or you could be fined for littering.

That’s the message from Plymouth City Council following a successful court case where a Stoke woman was ordered to pay £550 in fines and costs.

The woman was found guilty of littering in her absence by Plymouth magistrates and fined £220, ordered to pay £300 costs as well as a £30 victim surcharge by Plymouth magistrates. The court heard on October 31 last year a council officer was patrolling Stoke and witnessed a pile of household rubbish in the back lane of Lorrimore Avenue.

The officer inspected the contents and found letters addressed to the woman’s property. The court heard that collection day is Thursday in this area, and brown waste collection would have been made on October 19 and on November 2 2017.

There were no reports of missed collections within this time and the rubbish had been put out two days before they were due to be collected.

Nicola Horne, environmental protection service manager said, “Everyone needs to do their bit to help keep our streets clean.

We know that we have to get the basics right – that means making sure everyone is clear about what we are asking them to do with their rubbish and recycling bins.

“Littering is an offence and affects neighbours and blights our streets. We want to crack down on it to keep our streets clean for everyone to enjoy and we all play our part.”

Letters were sent to every home last year asking people to: • Put the bin at your usual collection point after 6.30pm the night before collection day and before 6.30am on the day of the collection. Bring your bins back in on the day of collection.

Major improvements completed at Pennycross Primary School Staff and pupils at Pennycross Primary School celebrated the official opening of their newly expanded school building.

Almost three million pounds worth of improvements have been carried out at the school which included a brand new two-storey extension with eight classrooms (four to each floor), stores, toilets, group rooms and a new hard play area.

The works were needed due to new housing developments in the area which meant the current school didn’t have enough space for all of its 315 pupils.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “Ham has seen so much investment in new and improved housing over the last few years but the schools haven’t expanded at the same rate.

These works provide much needed new space and I am really pleased that the children are benefiting from these new facilities which is adding excitement to their learning.”

The City Council has invested £2.988m from the capital investment programme which includes £849,907 from section 106 funding, which has been generated by the housing developments in the area.

Head teacher at Pennycross Carole Waziri said: “This extension will raise the profile of Pennycross within the

community and will enable us to grow alongside the increasing community. We are very excited that this project is now completed.”

The improvement works to the school have been carried out by Exeter based Devon Contractors.

This contract was JCT Design & Build 2011 and the only access was by going through the existing school grounds.

This meant that extensive site and traffic management plans were put in place to ensure there was as little disruption as possible to the school, as well as maintaining the safety of the pupils and staff at all times as a priority.

Pop up play acting and playwriting The Playwriters Organisation, in partnership with Wonderzoo, has planned a summer holiday of events for all the family.

Rental boom adds to Plymouth’s homeless pet problem Plymouth’s thriving rental market is fuelling a worrying increase in animals being parted from their owners due to landlords’ strict housing policies.

Woodside Animal Welfare Sanctuary at Elfordleigh, currently has more than 50 animals on its waiting list who cannot remain with their owners due to landlords’ ‘no pet’ policies.

And the charity has warned that the situation is likely to get worse as more people are forced into the rental sector by high demand, rising house prices, fluctuating mortgage rates and economic uncertainty.

Woodside’s deputy manager Dawn Cornish said last year the charity took in more than 120 animals whose owners were moving and unable to take them to their new rental accommodation.

“We expect this number to continue to increase again this year with landlords becoming more choosy about allowing pets in property,” she said.

‘Generation rent’ is now one of the top three reasons why pets are being brought to Woodside Animal Welfare Sanctuary, alongside strays and the ill health of owners.

These animals include cats, dogs, small furries such as rabbits and guinea pigs, and birds.

In Plymouth and across the UK, the private rental sector is

growing at a rapid pace with the UK currently having the highest number of private renters in its history, totalling more than one in five households. By 2021 one in four people are expected to be private tenants.

Research carried out by Citizens Advice Plymouth in 2017, found that out of 396 rooms being let by private landlords in the city, only 34 would take people with pets.

Plymouth’s largest social housing landlord, Plymouth Community Homes, stipulates that cats and dogs are only permitted in properties which have exclusive use of a garden, under a Pets Policy that came into effect in early 2012.

Cat and dog owners who signed their tenancy agreements prior to this time, who do not have exclusive use of a garden, can keep the cats and dogs they already owned

but they may not be replaced.

However in the private rental sector, landlords’ rules can be even tougher, with many implementing a ‘no pet’ policy across the board.

Among the animals brought into Woodside because of such policies is Bella, a black, white and tanned moggie who is expecting a litter of kittens.

Dawn said it was heartbreaking to see pet owners having to give up their beloved animals.

She said for some people, their beloved pet might be the only constant companion, bringing them enormous health and emotional benefits.

“I have animals and live in rented

accommodation, and it breaks my heart when people are forced to give up their much loved pet,” she said. “This can be due to regeneration of property and the new property having a no pet clause, or because they either cannot find a property that will allow animals or the landlord has changed their mind and they are forced to rehouse them.”

Prestigious awards for 100 Homes project The popular 100 Homes Project based in Stoneouse has won two prestigious national awards.

The 100 Homes Project started in 2014 on the 100th anniversary of the three towns of Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse merging into one city. The project captures the history of Stonehouse in the words of the people who live there – so that their stories and memories will be preserved.

The Project walked away with the Best Community Engagement Award and Winner of the Best Group at this year’s 12th annual conference of the Community Archive Heritage Group in Birmingham.

Presenting the awards to Pete Davey, project co-ordinator and Donna Maugham, assistant project co-ordinator was Nicholas David Barratt alongside the CEO of the Nations Memory Bank.

A delighted Pete Davey said: “This is fantastic news for us as this is national recognition for our local project. This has gone from strength to strength as this small project grew and as people became more involved.

“Once we started with this project the stories just kept on coming. People have told us about wartime bombings, Mormons arriving in Millbay and being besieged by prostitutes and Union Street mayhem.

“We also got to know the quieter, everyday lives of families and residents – shops that have come and gone, the experience of growing up in Nazareth House, stories of love, friendship and lives being lived.”

Hayley Kemp, communities worker for Plymouth Community Homes said: “We have been supporting and working on the project right from the start, encouraging our residents to be involved as we know they have some fantastic tales to tell.

“This is the sort of project that brings communities together both past and present, we have heard some amazing tales and we just keep discovering new ones. We can’t wait to see what new stories are round the corner!”

This small project grew as people became more involved with stories coming simply written on folded bits of scrap paper or recorded on mobile phones as they were told. Many people discovered old friends and family connections as a thriving Facebook page allowed people to share. This grew and grew as people began to share old photos and memorabilia.

This lead to the formation of an official project, with a steering group made up of Stonehouse residents and Stonehouse Timebank volunteers. The group aims to continue to grow the project further and set up a community archive preserving the history of Stonehouse as told by its people.

The judging panel said: “They have a fully rounded project with a real understanding of their target audiences. They engage with various groups of different ages, cultures and ethnicity across their community.”

“I’ve had a meeting with British Land and they have been working on a series of options for the New George Street block, which includes House of Fraser. We all want this amazing building to play a major role in the ongoing regeneration of Plymouth’s city centre. I can’t tell you what it will be, but I can tell you what it won’t be – it won’t be student accommodation.

He added: “The fact that we have one of the UK’s leading retail specialists responsible for the building provides some comfort.

We will work tirelessly with British Land to progress these plans as quickly as possible.”

Shadow leader Ian Bowyer said the City Centre remains a cross-party priority and fully supports working closely with British Land. He said: “We have all been working to diversify the City Centre and have put exciting plans in place to deliver a major plan for public realm improvements to improve

the look and feel of our City Centre. Our strong cross-party message will give British Land and other landlords confidence to invest in the long term. We are on the right path and must have the confidence to hold our course.”

Richard Wise, Head of Retail and Residential Development at British Land Plc reaffirmed their commitment to Plymouth.

He said: “We choose the locations in which we invest very carefully. Our confidence in Plymouth’s future is evidenced by two recent decisions to extend our investment, first through our acquisition of New George Street and, second, our investment in the leisure extension at Drake Circus.

“Just as important, thriving retailers share our belief in Plymouth’s future prosperity.

In the last few years we’ve introduced the likes of Apple, Jack Wills, Cath Kidston and Pandora to Drake Circus, which welcomes more than 18 million visitors every year. Lions Club of Plymouth have ‘roared’ along to assist the Plymouth Special Olympics Team with their bid to attend the World Summer Games in Abu Dubai in 2019.

A cheque for nearly £750 was awarded to Special Olympics Plymouth and District for the purchase of a new table tennis table, bats and balls, plus £300 for the club.

The presentation was made by outgoing Lion President Ian Hill.

The club has successfully entered

an increasing number of athletes to the Special Olympic Games in 2013, 2015 and 2017 with an ever increasing success rate and intend to enter a team for the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dubai.

The club provides opportunities for all people with learning disabilities so that they can develop skills and confidence and overcome the barriers that they face in mainstream life.

Although all of their athletes

have learning disabilities, they all come from different walks of life and have varying levels of ability.

The occurrence of learning disability knows no boundaries.

It cuts across the lines of racial, ethnic, educational, social and economic background. For every athlete that has been given the opportunity, the Special Olympics helps people with learning disabilities participate as productive and valued members of society.

Union leaders joined by council leader Tudor Evans, Johnny Mercer MP, Luke Pollard MP and Ian Bowyer Plymouth City Council is backing a campaign to ensure a new generation of Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ships are built in the UK. The campaign launched in the Council House in Plymouth aims to persuade the Government to protect dockyard jobs and skills by restricting bids to build the fleet Solid Support Ships (FSS) to the UK. The campaign, which is being led by the Unite and GMB trade unions through the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions (CSEU), is being backed by the City Council following a motion agreed by the full Council. It is also being supported by Plymouth MPs Luke Pollard and Johnny Mercer. CSEU general secretary Ian Waddell also attended the campaign's launch event in Plymouth.

The CSEU maintain that a total of 6,700 jobs and £285m stands to be lost under the Government's plans, despite its claim that Brexit will strengthen British manufacturing.

The new ships, which will support the Royal Navy’s carrier strike capability by supplying vital supplies such as ammunition and spare Patrick Mansfield of Devon Beekeepers Association - holding the frame of bees

parts, are expected to be built in time to be commissioned between 2026 and 2028 and the work will be valued at between £1 billion and £1.5 billion.

However, the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSBS) makes it clear that the MoD does not regard these vessels in the same sense as its frigates and destroyers and plans to open the design and build up to international competition, whilst only 'encouraging' UK bids.

Campaigners say the new ships should be treated as warships, which are excluded from competition under EU rules, especially as no other nation competes vessels of this size and complexity.

Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans said: “The council is backing this campaign because this issue could have a significant impact on Devonport and other dockyards around the UK. “The Government must support the retention of ship design, construction and maintenance jobs and capabilities in the

UK, not those in other nations who already receive state support.

“Keeping this work in the UK is important for retaining skills at Devonport and Babcock could benefit from this work if it is carried out in the UK. “We don’t believe there is any reason why Government should not change its approach and restrict bids to the UK. “Many foreign yards are state owned or receive a significant amount of support from their governments and UK yards are at an unfair disadvantage.

“It would be a win-win if the ships are built in the UK but a massive lose if they go elsewhere.”

John Bennett, the chair of the Industrial Trade Unions at Devonport Dockyard said: “In Germany, their government will only allow foreign bids to make the shortlist if they are at least 30% cheaper than the German bids, due to taking into account the total economic effect of sending the work abroad.

“The government needs to get its act together.”

New bee hives in Central Park

Plymouth allotment holders, concerned at the falling number of bees have set up new bee hives in the allotments in Central Park.

A new community apiary is being managed by Central Park Allotments Association working in partnership with Plymouth City Council. Under the scheme, allotment holders can put hives in the apiary and they already have two very busy colonies of honey bees in place. There was a formal opening ceremony and tape cutting in early July with guests including local councillors and members of the Plymouth branch of the British Beekeepers Association, which took place at Venn Farm Allotment site.

There was a large screened area in a pretty, natural woodland setting, surrounded by wildflowers and fruit trees and bushes, with the wooden

beehives available for a closer look.

Spare bee suits and gloves were available for anyone who wanted to take a closer look.

A beehive in summer contains one queen and up to 50,000 bees, 95% of which are female and live for just six weeks. This means they spend the first three weeks of their life in the hive, cleaning and nursing young, and the final three weeks foraging away from the hive for nectar and pollen.

Bees are in serious decline around the world due to use of pesticides and habitat loss. Considering 70% of the fruit and vegetables we eat are pollinated by bees, it proves how important bees are to our general survival. However, city bees are showing signs of thriving, due to the mixed nature of plant species in towns.

SEA-lebrities are the real stars in Aquarium’s Summer Show

To celebrate the school

summer holidays, the National Marine Aquarium is hosting an unmissable programme of events and celebrating in style with a SEA-lebrities summer theme.

Taking place from July 28 to September 2, the Aquarium will be celebrating some amazing sea animals, showcasing what makes them special and how they are vital to the underwater eco-system.

Daily summer shows will offer visitors the chance to learn more about some of the famous animals that call the Aquarium home. The Big NMA Summer Show will introduce different ocean ambassadors through a series of fun interactive competitions. We will be showing off why they are important and how they are saving their ocean habitat.

Visitors will then decide which ocean animal comes out on top.

The Aquarium’s famous Eddystone Reef exhibit will also be transformed to include a red carpet with the NMA hosts taking on the role of the paparaz-sea!

This year is also a special year for the Aquarium, which is celebrating its 20th birthday. As an education and conservation charity the NMA has been instrumental in connecting people with our Oceans and promoting pro-Ocean behaviour over the past 20 years. Its world-class husbandry team look after more than 4,000 animals, including Lemon Sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, Sting Rays and Friday the Green Turtle, to name just a few, and leads groundbreaking research and breeding projects.

Helen Gowans, public engagement co-ordinator at the National Marine Aquarium, commented: “There are some incredible creatures living in our oceans, and some of the most famous live here at the Aquarium!

At the National Marine Aquarium we want to help give visitors the

opportunity to get up close and personal with some of our SEAlebrities.

“The summer activity will be perfect for the whole family and any budding explorers. There is plenty of interactive fun planned for all ages, with everyone being able to get involved and vote for their favourite species. From giant Turtles to Sandtiger Sharks, visitors will be able to take selfies at our NMA selfie stations and we can’t wait to see you there!”

In response to the peak summer period, from July 28, the Aquarium will be extending its opening hours.

The venue will be open daily from 9.30am to 6pm, giving even more time to explore the exhibits and make the most of the summer showcase.

Extra activities throughout the summer period include an interactive SEA-lebrities summer trail and a Marine Media Myth Busting station, exploring the way the various SEA-lebrities are portrayed in the newspapers, on TV and in film.

As well as learning more about the animals, visitors can have the opportunity to be snapped with the SEA-lebrities at the selfie stations

situated around the Aquarium.

On top of all this, the Aquarium will also be hosting another popular sleep over event. Taking place on August 18, visitors will have an exclusive chance to see what happens in the Aquarium’s underwater world after the lights go down. The presence of sharks gliding silently overhead whilst visitors sleep will mesmerize anyone daring enough to spend a night in their company.

With the extended opening hours the Aquarium’s popular Café will also be open longer, offering an upgraded breakfast deal and hot food until 5pm.

Expert training for future sports stars at City College Plymouth Raiders have teamed up with City College Plymouth to create the Plymouth Raiders Basketball Academy - designed to educate and train future sporting stars.

The Raiders Academy will combine expert coaching and fitness conditioning with a full-time course so the players can develop their skills, whilst gaining a qualification.

With exclusive access to coaches and professional players, the future sports stars will get an insight into working in the world of sport through placements and work experience and playing in competitive matches.

They will also benefit from sessions with the College’s expert Strength and Conditioning team and have the opportunity of taking part in coaching and officiating courses.

Richard Mollard, director of Plymouth Raiders, said “I’m delighted to be partnering with City College to host our Basketball Academy. The College shares our ambition to grow the Academy to provide the talented boys and girls across Devon and

Cornwall with an opportunity to not only be the best they can be on the basketball court, but to combine this with their studies and provide a pathway to future education and employment opportunities.

“We’ve been incredibly impressed with their new sports-lab that complements their existing sport facilities, as well as their desire to continue to invest in their sports programme, making them an extremely exciting and valuable partner to support our long term vision for the sport in the City.”

@PlymChronicle A Plymouth social entrepreneur has attended the President’s Lunch at Wimbledon after winning a prestigious tennis award.

Former physiotherapist, Fiona Murphy, founded her social enterprise, Double Bounce Inclusive Tennis South West CIC, to combine her love of tennis and helping others.

Double Bounce provides tennis based sessions for people with physical and learning disabilities. It caters for adults at the Plymouth Life centre, as well as holding sessions in special needs schools and young adult support centres.

Fiona’s work has been recognised after winning the Devon LTA Disability Tennis Programme Award and the British Tennis Awards Disability Programme Award for the South West region.

Winning the award earned Fiona an invite to the President’s Lunch at Wimbledon, and she was also given a Centre Court ticket where she got to see eight-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer play.

Fiona said: “Double Bounce is for people with a disability or severe impairment who would not normally find it possible to access tennis. Winning the award and being invited to the President’s Lunch at Wimbledon was a fantastic opportunity to chat to the deputy President of the LTA, David Rawlison, to tell him what we are doing in Devon regarding Disability and Inclusive Tennis.”

Jill Osleger, of the Tennis Foundation said: “Fiona has shown such dedication and passion for increasing provision for people with a disability to get involved in tennis. Her drive and passion has encouraged others around her to get more involved so that many people can now enjoy the great physical and mental wellbeing benefits playing tennis can bring. We are delighted to work with her and support her work, and are very proud of her achieving such amazing results!”

Fiona has also started providing walking-tennis based sessions for people with dementia, working with the Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance to help promote these sessions. Fiona has also worked in partnership with Improving Lives Plymouth, who have leant volunteer support and provided funding for her tennis-based sessions.

Taxi marshals scheme extended to city centre A pilot project which aims to make Plymouth City Centre a safer place at night is to be rolled out in the summer months.

The extended use of taxi marshals, who were originally based on the Barbican, was trialled in the city centre during the Bank Holiday at the end of May and proved to be a great success. Now it is to be run in the city throughout July and August.

Taxi marshals, employed by City Security, will be working in the Derry’s Cross area including on the ranks outside of the Genting Casino for two months. The aim is to increase the safeguarding of people in the night time economy and reduce the number of incidents associated with taxi ranks.

Inspector Robin Loveridge said: “This is an excellent example of organisations involved in the night time economy coming together and working in partnership to ensure people enjoying Plymouth’s nightlife can do so safely. Taxi marshals proved to be

a huge success on the Barbican and we are really pleased to be extending this to the city centre.”

Rachael Hind, licensing service manager for Plymouth City Council said: “We want people to come and enjoy what Plymouth has to offer and for them to get home quickly and safely. We also want a vibrant evening and night time economy that does not cause nuisance to residents. Taxi marshals can assist in getting people to leave the pubs and clubs more quickly, and by doing so, reduce the impact of noise and other anti-social behaviour to residents living nearby.

“It is also important that we support the taxi drivers, who often face violence and abuse when transporting people late at night. The taxi marshals will be there to support the drivers and provide a safer environment for everyone.”

City Security managing director Tony Merrick said: “City Security is proud to have been asked to provide taxi marshals for the

city centre this summer. This project is a great example of the partnership between Devon and Cornwall Police, Best Bar None, Plymouth Pubwatch and Plymouth City Council, in making Plymouth’s night time economy, a safe place for people to enjoy themselves.”

Cat Macdonald from Best Bar None added: “We are pleased to be contributing towards funding the taxi marshal scheme over the summer months. This is yet another great example of how the licensed trade is working together with agencies to promote Plymouth as a safe and vibrant place to go at night.

“The marshals will be able to reassure people that they will be able to find a taxi in a controlled queue, assisting in preventing anti-social behaviour, improving the safety of vulnerable persons and dealing with confrontational situations. “ Funding for the taxi marshals is also being provided by the City Centre BID and PARC (Plymouth Against Retail Crime).

Girls’ School honoured in Vote 100 celebration Devonport High School for Girls wass honoured to be one of a small number of select educational establishments to be profiled in the official History of Parliament Trust Vote 100 commemorative album

A century ago this year, Parliament passed the Representation of the People Act 1918 – a package of electoral reforms that extended the vote to women for the first time. As part of the 100th anniversary celebrations, publisher St James’s House has partnered with the History of Parliament Trust to produce the official commemorative album for the Vote 100 anniversary campaign, entitled Voice & Vote.

St James’s House is an award-winning custom publisher that has produced official publications for The Queen’s 90th Birthday, the Thames Diamond Jubilee, the Prince Philip Trust Fund, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.

Support for veterans, staffed by veterans

The Veterans Care Navigation Service, run by Improving Lives Plymouth, provides support for those who have left the military - recently or many years ago - to choose and access services that best meet their needs. The staff and volunteers are themselves veterans, and the team is headed up by Bill Jennings and Jo Brokenshire, both ex-Royal Navy.

Jo served for 17 years, until she was medically discharged in 2015. She had injured her shoulder coming down a ship’s ladder and in spite of treatment did not recover enough for service.

“I left the Navy on good terms,” says Jo, “but after my final medical board, when I was told I would be discharged, the support I had received from the Navy just stopped. At first I didn’t know where to go for help.”

This is something Jo finds that many veterans encounter. “ They have lived in a routine for years where most things are provided.

Many of them simply don’t know how to find what’s available to help them, or even that there is help available in the first place.”

Jo was fortunate in that she was supported by her husband, also in the Navy, and she was able to adjust to civilian life more easily.

She saw her current role advertised on Facebook, and although she did not need a job, she applied and was successful at interview.

“I wanted to do something to help other veterans to get the help they need. I’d found support myself but so many people just don’t

know where to start; I wanted to be part of making that better.”

Many ex-service personnel face additional barriers to getting help. “Lots of them don’t see themselves as veterans, which they are. And they don’t like to ask for help, they think it’s for someone worse off than them, which it isn’t – there’s help for anyone who has left the services.

“We open their eyes to things that are available, we give them their options and support them to get going,” says Jo. “People don’t like coming into an office sometimes, so we’ll meet them at home, or out for a coffee. I spend a lot of time at Costa. Rather than a formal interview, we just talk, and in the course of that we generally find out what people are struggling with.

“From there, we can point them in the right direction and support them as they work it through.”

Veterans Care Navigation helps people to identify what their needs are, and gives them information so that they can choose for themselves what help they access.

The team can refer to a range of specialist support organisations, and they can advise on issues like benefits and grants for essential items and home adaptations.

If you are a recent leaver or have been out of the military for some time you can contact them to get the support you need. The support available includes: • Information, advice and signposting for veterans and their dependants.

• Support for veterans and their dependants to navigate and choose services that best meet their needs.

• Work with partner organisations to deliver the required support.

• Assessments of need and support plans developed with you.

• Outreach work in various community settings.

Kitley House Hotel plans refresh in time for 2020

Kitley House Hotel is investing in an extensive refurbishment programme to coincide with the 400th anniversary in 2020 of the historic voyage of the Mayflower ship from the UK to the Americas.

The Bastard family, who own the Kitley Estate and last month took back the management of the hotel and wedding venue business, have developed a comprehensive refurbishment plan. Work has already commenced with changes happening on a daily basis which is evolving this delightful venue into a first-class Devon hotel.

The re-modelling commenced at the beginning of June with the upgrade of the entire mile-long driveway, which was ripped up, flattened and resurfaced by Cornwall-based surfacing experts T Richards & Sons. The smooth, new road was extremely well received by the public, with over 500 individual positive reactions made on the @KitleyHouse Facebook and Twitter feeds.

The next stage in the renovation will be cleaning the exterior of the silvery marble country manor house while a programme of refurbishment unfolds inside, including converting the Morning Room into a lounge, repainting throughout.

The 500-year-old house is a fitting historical location from which to explore the Mayflower 400 festivities. The hotel looks forward to welcoming some of the 25 million descendants of the passengers and crew who sailed on the Mayflower and other ancestral tourists to Kitley as part of the anniversary year.

Every child who signs up to read six books over the summer holiday will get a collector’s map of Beanotown to keep a record of their challenge journey – and if they complete it they will be presented with a medal at their library and a certificate during their school assembly.

The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust have recently introduced a third bell boat to their fleet after receiving generous funding from the BoshierHinton Foundation and the David Gibbons Trust.

Steve Whiteway from Improving Lives Plymouth joined young adults and staff from Woodlands School, who provides specialist education to around seventy-five young people who have physical, sensory and medical difficulties, when they received the bell boat recently.

The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust asked the pupils to name the new bell boat - they chose ‘Spirit of Woodlands’.

Sam Waites, activities manager at Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome another bellboat to our fleet. The ‘Spirit of Woodlands’ will be enjoyed by many children and young people over the coming weeks, months and years and will play a key part in ensuring that everyone who wants to can enjoy being on the water

in Britain’s Ocean City. Our thanks go to both the Boshier-Hinton Foundation and David Gibbons Trust who generously helped to fund the project.”

Bellboats are the perfect vessel for introducing children and young adults with special educational needs to canoeing and experiencing getting afloat in the safety of a large, stable boat.

This new addition to the Centre’s fleet will enable more people to experience the water and see Plymouth from a different perspective who may never have been able to previously.

The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust are now pursuing relevant grant applications which will enable the Centre to develop an indoor climbing wall specifically designed for children and young adults with special educational needs so that they can enjoy activities at the Centre all year round.

Identical twin sisters Beth and Alice Antliff are graduating from Plymouth College of Art - with identical degrees!

The sisters studied glass and ceramics as part of their BA (Hons) 3D Design Crafts degree and showcased their work at the college’s Degree Show.

They worked collaboratively to be awarded the Principal’s Enterprise Award for their plans to set up an open studio to allow local creatives to access specialist facilities.

The pair have also been awarded a number of other industrial awards, including the Coombes Futures Award and the Potclays Graduate Award.

Alice’s work is often intricate and fragile, representing delicate qualities of nature, particularly plants and flowers. Currently concentrating on glass engraving, Alice has interrogated her own impact on the environment and now uses 100% recycled and upcycled glass, meaning that no new materials are used to create her work.

Alice has a passion for raising awareness of environmental issues, such as plastic pollution, through her work.

Dartmoor Zoo successfully breeds endangered Madagascan lizard

Conservationists at Dartmoor Zoo have revealed that they have successfully bred the endangered yellow-headed day gecko in captivity following the hatching of a juvenile gecko in June.

The tiny baby is the first to hatch from a clutch of eggs produced by a carefully planned breeding programme which identified

the valuable genetics of Dartmoor Zoo’s three adult yellow-headed day geckos.

The 10-day old youngster is currently the size of an adult’s fingertip and will be too small to sex until it is fully grown.

Young geckos are fragile and can be vulnerable to disease so the new arrival will remain under the close supervision of

the keepers until it is strong enough to be introduced to zoo visitors. When it is ready to meet its public, the diminutive lizard will be named by the Zoo’s visitors who have already chosen new names for Marvin the common marmoset and Midnight the axolotl in recent months.

Zoo keepers hope that their success with

the yellow-headed day gecko will lead to further conservation programmes with critically endangered reptile species including the Tanzanian electric blue gecko and golden mantella frogs.

Commenting on the breeding success, Dartmoor Zoo founder and CEO, Benjamin Mee, said: “Conservation is at the heart of everything we do at Dartmoor Zoo and our focus this year is endangered reptile and amphibian species. The focus of conservation activity often falls on large, popular species, such as our endangered Amur tigers, but species of every size are essential to maintaining biodiversity and we must never overlook the smaller creatures.

“The success of our gecko breeding programme is a testament to the skill, patience and dedication of our senior keeper, Justin Aird, and his lower vertebrates and invertebrates team in caring for our adult geckos and providing the optimum breeding conditions. Our keepers are experts in their field and are perfectly positioned to provide our youngster with the best possible care as it develops.

“Our next hope is to create a breeding programme for the electric blue gecko; a critically endangered species that is under serious threat from the exotic pet trade and habitat loss. In the meantime, our family of yellow-headed day geckos will help us to campaign against deforestation and educate local school and community groups about the importance of conservation.”

The yellow-headed day gecko is endemic to Madagascar which is renowned for producing thousands of unique animal and plant species which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The pint-sized lizard is one of many species under threat from habitat loss as a result of deforestation.

Partners in Plymouth have joined forces to warn of the dangers of tombstoning – which comes with the risk of broken limbs, life changing injuries, cold water shock and death.

Plymouth City Council has teamed up with Devon and Cornwall Police, RNLI, HM Coastguard and the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership to deliver a new campaign to educate people about the dangers of tombstoning. Young people at risk of tombstoning in the city are also being encouraged to take up other activities such as coasteering.

Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, Councillor Sally Haydon, said: “It is important that we educate people of all ages on the dangers of tombstoning. It is essential that they understand the gravity of injuries they could receive, be that a severely broken limb, or spinal damage. Cold water shock is a particularly dangerous risk for activities in open water such as lakes or the sea, creating difficulties in breathing and body movement.

“Reports of tombstoning increase during the summer holidays, so we must do all we can to dissuade people from participating in this potentially deadly activity. We do understand that people see tombstoning as fun or thrill seeking without really thinking about the dangers, we encourage those who may be considering tombstoning to look at other adrenaline filled activities that can be done safely. We’re working with young people who have engaged in tombstoning to take up alternative activities such as coasteering through our Summer Mix programme.”

Dangers of tombstoning include: • tides changing dramatically, affecting how deep the water looks, as well as obscuring rocks and other debris that can cause serious damage • spinal injuries; 20 per cent of tombstoning injuries are spinal – often with life changing consequences • cold water shock, which can affect your breathing, restrict your movement, and leave you helpless in seconds • drowning: 400 people drowned in coastal related incidents in the last 30 years THE

Experience I recently received the deeply sad news of the passing of a very dear and close friend and Christian leader from the Kings in Tavistock, Pastor Colin Bond.

I have known and worked with Colin and his wife Joy for almost thirty years.

Regular listeners to the Cross Rhythms Art of Living programme will have heard frequent interviews about his work in Uganda, which he started in his seventies - building a hotel and supporting hospitals and orphanages.

Chris Cole He was eighty when he passed. I called him a pioneer of pioneers because in all the years I knew him and worked with him his worldview, spiritual conviction and perspective on life was amazingly contagious and inspirational.

He understood the messiness of our humanity, even as Christians, so he was never disillusioned about life because he was never following an illusion. He stood with the broken and downtrodden, without passing judgement, but with enough loving authority to help people climb out of their own mess and

Inspector Robin Loveridge, who is responsible for policing the Hoe area said: “In recent years Plymouth has seen tragedy as a result of what some consider a fun activity. This includes the death of a man when he hit the rocks jumping from the Hoe foreshore and other tragic incidents where many people have been seriously injured.

“A 17-year-old received life changing injuries and a 14-year-old was described as being ‘lucky to be alive’ after diving headfirst onto rocks and being rescued by the coastguard. I would urge parents to speak to their children and get them to understand that it is a very dangerous activity to take

part in and just not worth the risks.”

“We want all our residents and visitors to enjoy the waterfront and have fun but it’s important that people know how to do this safely, so please do be aware of the dangers of tombstoning.”

Piers Stanbury, duty controller for HM Coastguard, said: ‘Tombstoning into the sea from rocks, piers or other structures can be extremely dangerous and always carries great risk.

“The depth of water can dramatically change with the tide and what was a deep pool at lunchtime might be a shallow puddle by teatime. You also don’t know what hazards may be lurking under the surface until you are hurt or worse.

“The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim to safety and strong currents can quickly sweep people away. If you do want to jump from height into the sea we would advise people join a coasteering group with a professional and reputable adventure centre.”

As ever, our message is, ‘Keep safe, but if you see anybody in trouble or if you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard’.

Colin’s was a life well lived

Colin wasn’t overly concerned about what people thought of him, but he did care how God saw him. His life demonstrated the bible principle that ‘the reverential fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom’. Whilst being spiritually very deep, it was this depth which anchored him in the battles of life.

Not only had his church fellowship, the Kings, been an incredible blessing to the town of Tavistock under his past leadership, their work in Africa was also symptomatic of many church fellowships who pour millions of man hours, effort, buildings and money into local and international communities.

This work continues in the wonderful team of Elders who Colin had the foresight to encourage into their roles as oversight of this wonderful community.

Colin was around church work as far back as the early sixties and had a difficult personal upbringing family wise, but as we worked together on projects such as the Father’s House, with four church fellowships working together, he would always, with

incredible energy, faith, hope and love share, with great balance and wisdom, how when he saw Jesus, he saw Jesus as his father.

These were the words of Jesus Himself quoted in John 14:7-11 “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “LORD, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?

The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”

Whilst honouring his earthly father and the devastation of his dad’s suffering as a soldier in the second world war, (which impacted on Colin and his siblings as the war did to many families who lived through those dark times), Colin was able to forgive his earthly father and through living aligned to his Heavenly Father leave an incredible legacy which is vibrant today and will continue to bear much fruit. I believe Colin is now not only at peace and rest, he is enjoying the fruits of a life well lived with God.

Students’ successes celebrated at annual awards ceremony 24 August 2018

Winner Steve Lacy with Kat Jones

Community work, volunteering and overcoming adversity were just some of the many achievements celebrated at City College’s recent Student of the Year awards.

The annual ceremony recognises students who have really gone above and beyond - making a positive contribution to the College or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve highly in their studies.

The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating lecturers as well as local employers who presented five special awards. They all enjoyed a delicious three-course meal prepared by the College’s hospitality and catering students before receiving their certificate and prizes.

Award Winners

College Awards Steve Lacy, 35, Beacon Park Higher Education Student of the Year After over a decade of being in the workforce, Steve decided to return to education to start a career in Sports Rehabilitation, Strength and Conditioning. With a young family to support and aspirations to help future athletes, Steve works

incredibly hard and was nominated by not one, but three of his lecturers, who said ‘he is what all HE students should aspire to be’.

“I want to get the most out of my time here so I volunteer for every event and mentor students where I can. The lecturers are there whenever you need them and offer so much guidance. I have been given many opportunities to test my skills and learn everything I can about the sports industry, which I am sure will help me in my future career.”

Alexandra Kennedy, 21, Stoke Adult Learner of the Year After moving to the UK three years ago, Alexandra decided to further her career by going back to education. With a keen business head on her shoulders, she manages to balance studying whilst working full-time and is on track to receive top grades.

“I believe learning is a privilege and that a good education can have a huge impact on the path we all take. The College has provided me with all the knowledge and skills to start my career in business. I am looking forward to starting university in September and couldn’t have got to where I am without the support of my lecturers.”

Megan Worthy, 17, Southway Full-time Student of the Year Fighting through her deep anxiety, Megan has strived to do things outside of her comfort zone this year. Megan likes to make the most of her learning by volunteering at events and uses her talent for beauty to help others who may need a little pampering.

“I really pushed myself to start my course and I am so glad I did! I’m enjoying everything I am learning and getting to use these skills to help others feel better is an added bonus. I’m less and less anxious every day and can’t thank my lecturers, friends and course mates enough for their support.”

Sponsored Awards Luke Collier, 21, Devonport Employability Award sponsored by Redrok Luke stood out from the great pool of candidates due to his positivity, hardworking attitude and determination to succeed despite personal challenges. He has so many skills that employers want and that is why he was awarded the Employability Award by sponsors Redrok.

“Choosing to be an apprentice at City College has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I know I would not have the confidence or the skill set I have today without my Apprenticeship programme and the support of colleagues. This experience has helped me to discover my career path.”

Lyndsey-Jo Roberts, 31, Saltash High Achiever Award sponsored by Devon Chamber of Commerce Lyndsey-Jo is a fantastic example of someone giving 100%. She is a real ambassador for women in engineering: as both a military wife and a mum, she has juggled these commitments with her

Trevor Worth and winner Terry Connick Terry Connick, 18, Mount Wise Leadership Award sponsored by Portcullis Legals and Principal’s Award winner Described by his lecturer as ‘the most outstanding student I have had the pleasure of teaching’, Terry was unsurprisingly selected for the Principal’s Award, as well as receiving the Leadership Award, sponsored by Portcullis Legals.

He receives very high praise from his teachers, peers and employers. He is also a mentor to fellow students and makes the most of every opportunity; taking part in events and recently returning from Gothenburg as part of a working exchange programme.

“The College has opened so many doors for me. I really enjoying working as part of a team especially at events like Flavour Fest, MTV Crashes and the Duke of Cornwall ‘takeover’. I was really humbled to win two awards - I’m just doing something I love but it is great to be recognised.”

Jack Henderson, 21, Saltash Student Voice Award sponsored by Clever Student Lets Studying Creative Media Production, Jack is an ambassador and student rep for his course making him someone that both students and staff can rely on. Jack has shown a creative flair as a contributor to a student magazine, which he is using as a platform to make more student voices heard.

“I believe you get out of life what you put in, so I try to help others where I can. I think it is important for everyone to be heard and I am proud to be a representative of the student voice. I hope to build many positive relationships throughout my studies which will stand me in good stead for the world of work.”
