Flower power brings colour and fun to Drake Circus

Plymouth’s Drake Circus will be filled with flowers and fun for all the family this summer, turning the South West’s leading shopping destination into a pretty paradise for young and old.

Following the success of last year’s highly successful collaboration, the award-winning Theatre Royal Plymouth’s Workshop and Drawing team is to create a ‘Summer Meadow’ concept both inside and outside the shopping centre.

The result will be giant flowers which will hang from the atrium, floor level giant flower installations, which will act as flower seats, and flowers that will spill out onto Old Town Street, creating a stunning summer focal point in the city centre – and an interesting place to relax for people who come to shop at the centre’s top retail brands.

The stunning look will also provide a colourful backdrop for the activities planned through the summer, which kick off on July 7 and 8 with a VW camper van photo booth and floral stiltwalkers.

Kids’ activities will take place every Tuesday from July 31 to August 28, including everything from circus school and craft and puppet shows to face painting and a silent disco!

There’ll also be the opportunity to explore interesting aspects of Plymouth life through interactive Community Days with The Box, Plymouth Library, Mayflower 400 and Plymouth Argyle.

“We are delighted to work with the Theatre Royal Plymouth team again,” said centre director, Greg Lumley. “We are particularly excited about our new wildflower canopy on Old Town Street and seeing how the installation brings the whole centre to life for summer.

“Our aim is to create a highly enjoyable and memorable visit and this stand out Summer installation will not only celebrate local creativity and collaboration, but also provide a stunning backdrop for our great range of Summer activities this year.”

Charity football match and fun day planned

Devon Football Association referee Brian Johnston is organising a charity football match and fun day to take place at Plymstock School on July 8 between 12pm and 4pm.

Raising money for the Neo Natal Special Care Baby unit at Derriford and Cancer Research, the event will also include the chance to watch the match between the Referees and the Royal Navy Veterans.

There will also be a table top sale, held in the gym of the school. People are encouraged to book a table, for only £5, to sell their wares, similar to that of a car boot sale. There will also be stalls, raffles, a tombola and a bouncy castle.

Huge cinema complex is taking shape rapidly

Work on the construction of the new Drake Circus leisure complex is progressing at a rapid pace.

The 100,000 square foot development will see a 12 screen Cineworld Imax cinema, 15 restaurants and bars including a Sky bar above the cinema to capture stunning views of the city and its coastline, as well as 420 new car park spaces.

The new scheme will create 350 permanent jobs, a huge number of temporary construction jobs and will benefit the city’s night-time economy hugely.

Restaurant chains such as Frankie & Benny’s and Zizzi have been confirmed to want space in the new £53 million pound complex, with other giants such as Byron Burger and Wagamamas also rumoured to be interested.

The development is due for completion in the autumn of 2019.

Top gymnast teams up with Everyone Active to encourage more children to take up the sport Everyone Active and double Olympic gold medallist, Max Whitlock, have launched a new initiative at Plymouth Life Centre to drive participation in gymnastics.

School children in Plymouth have become some of the first to benefit from the partnership between a local leisure provider and the Olympic star.

Max Whitlock attended the Plymouth Life Centre in June to celebrate the launch of his gymnastics scheme in Everyone Active centres across the country. He was joined by more than 100 children from Compton C of E Primary School and Montpelier Primary School who became some of the first to try out the new sessions.

Everyone Active and Max Whitlock Gymnastics have teamed up with the aim of offering more young people the opportunity to participate in gymnastics.

Together, they have pledged to get one million children engaged in the sport by 2022. This will be done through the delivery of Max Whitlock Gymnastics in more than 30 Everyone Active centres across the country, including the Plymouth Life Centre.

The sessions will give children the chance to develop and perfect their gymnastics skills as they take part in exciting activities set by Max and his elite coach wife, Leah, who has also been instrumental in the setup of the scheme.

At the event, Max treated the guests, who included representatives from Plymouth City Council, to a demonstration of his world-class skills before leading the children through an hour of activities.

He said: “I am delighted to have teamed up with Everyone Active to ensure that more young people are given the opportunity to enjoy gymnastics. Training at an Everyone

in London and Sunderland.

The partnership between Max and Everyone Active came about as a result of his longstanding relationship with the leisure operator. He has trained at Everyone Active’s Basildon Sporting Village from a young age, and has also been heavily involved in the Everyone Active Sporting Champions scheme, a support programme for talented athletes, for the past three years.

What’s That Noise?

June 16 - July 6 Soapbox Children’s Theatre. 11am and 1.30pm. There is a squeak and a tantalising toot, a crisp crash and a hilarious hoot. Where does it come from? What does it mean? A whispered word and a scrumptious scream!

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

Gin Festival Plymouth 2018 Jun 29 Plymouth Pavilions The UK’s first, biggest and best gin festival is making it’s first visit to Plymouth and there’s going to be enormous variety of different gins. As well as the opportunity to try a huge variety of gins from all over the world (including exclusive gins you won’t see anywhere else), there will be live music, great food and a gin cocktail bar. There will also be gin masterclasses, and the opportunity to meet gin distillers in person, try free samples and chat about their gin.

Plymouth Armed Forces Day 2018 Jun 30 The Hoe Celebrate Plymouth’s proud military tradition at the annual Armed Forces Day, which this year will also be commemorating the RAF’s 100th anniversary. It will showcase the services with static and arena displays and parades. The exciting arena programme will return this year, with a highlight being the Field Gun competitions and the Parade of Standards will see cadets and veterans alike march across the Hoe Promenade. There will also be military vehicles, equipment and static helicopters on display to see up close as well as the opportunity to meet the Royal Navy, Army, Marines, RAF and veterans’ organisations in a variety of villages set out across the Hoe. Plymouth Model Show Jun 30 Plymouth Guildhall Come along to the annual scale model show. Two large displays will commemorate 100 years since WWI finished and also the centenary of the Royal Air Force. There will be static and radio control models, model railways and a variety of displays from South West model clubs and winner model clubs from Brittany. A model competition is also taking place during the day. The cafe sells hot and cold food and there will be a tombola running throughout the event.

British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Each year, six professional display firework companies are selected by a draw to take part, and despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997. In addition to the dazzling display of fireworks, there is entertainment on the Hoe including a fun fair with thrill rides, Heart FM providing live music and a number of catering facilities available to stave off any hunger during the show.

Ocean City Blues n Jazz Festival 2018 Aug 10 - 12 The Parade, The Barbican The Ocean City Blues n Jazz Festival returns for a third year, sponsored by Rowes Honda, delighting blues and jazz fans around the city and further afield with another great weekend of live music in one of Britain’s most stunning locations. Investigation work under way on Mayflower Steps Investigation works are being carried out on the Mayflower Steps after a routine inspection found some damage to the steps and neighbouring wall.

The steps have been closed off to enable structural engineers to look at what is causing cracking before a schedule of works is drawn up to carry out repairs.

The inspection was part of a planned programme to review the steps as well as the area around the pier on the Barbican ahead of public realm improvement works for Mayflower 2020.

It is believed the damage has been caused by tidal lag which has caused stress and movement in the historic structure on the Barbican, which is close to the site where the Mayflower sailed from in 1620.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet Member for Finance, who has responsibility for land and property, said: “We take the safeguarding of Plymouth’s historic assets very seriously and will be ensuring this is repaired quickly and to a high standard.”

The steps and attached pier are grade II listed and are part of the Barbican Conservation Area.

An historic environment specialist will be working alongside the structural engineers, the council’s assets team and a Westcountry heritage stonemason company to ensure the work takes into account their historic value.

Further investigations will take place over the coming weeks which will involve some scaffolding being erected on the seaward side.

Plans to build a hotel on land currently used as a car park for Plymouth Pavilions have been submitted to Plymouth City Council.

The proposal includes the six-storey 175-bed hotel - with associated restaurant, bar and leisure facilities - landscaping, car parking along with seven three bedroom town houses and seven ‘extended stay’ apartments for short-term let.

The development plan has been submitted on behalf of Vastint UK, a subsidiary of the Dutch-based parent company which has acquired the site.

Vastint are an international real estate organisation with over 25 years of experience.

It has undertaken numerous projects across Europe, including several in the UK. It has successfully delivered developments for Marriott’s Moxy Hotel brand, which is the one proposed for the Plymouth site - which is at the junction of Bath Street and Millbay Road.

According to the planning application Moxy Hotels are three star, lifestyle establishments offering affordable luxury to guests with a ‘vibrant, young spirit at heart.’

If given the go-ahead it is hoped that the hotel and associated development will be completed in time for the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020.

Plans have been submitted for Central Park’s new Community Sports Hub and tennis courts.

Situated in the heart of the park on the site of current bowling pavilion, the hub will complement the current bowling greens as well as the refurbished sports plateau by adding changing rooms, accessible toilets and storage facilities; opening up the park to a wider range of outdoor sports.

Meanwhile, four new hard-surfaced tennis courts will be created to the east of the hub.

Flood-lit and built to Lawn Tennis Association standard, the courts will combine pay-toplay access with free community events and coaching.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: “I am really pleased to support the plans for the Community Sports Hub and the tennis courts, which will improve the provision for sport across the park.

“Encouraging a wide range of people to visit and enjoy Central Park is at the heart of these plans and these innovative and fresh designs should do exactly that. I hope that in time, they will in time become focal points of the park.”

As part of the plans to create the hub, the existing pavilion will remain in place.

Upgrades will be made to the toilets, dry changing rooms and the kitchen and heating installed so that a wider range of community and sports groups will be able to use the space all year round.

An extension will see additional wetchanging facilities, designed to Football Foundation specifications, join the current dry changing rooms and two further rooms for referees and the ambulant disabled.

This will allow the hub to be used by football, rugby and cricket teams playing on the sports plateau and also accommodate those using the bowls and tennis facilities adjacent to the hub.

A main entrance will be incorporated into the north-facing side of the building to meet a new pathway where a grassed public space, suitable for families and over-spill from events at the hub, will be created. The current bowling greens to the west of the hub will be retained and upgraded.

The new hub has been designed by Erect Architecture and LDA Design. A consultation period will now run until July 10, when a final planning decision will be made.

An exhibition ‘Celebrating 70 years of the NHS’ continues until July 8 at Ford Park Cemetery. The exhibition is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.30am and 3.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Refreshments are available in the Visitor Centre cafe.

The next exhibition ‘Plymouth on the Move’ will run from July 28 until September 9, giving an insight into transportation in the city over the years.

Land, sea and air transport will be featured in this exciting exhibition, which is being put together by the volunteers of the Heritage team, who work tirelessly to stage so many interesting exhibitions throughout the year. Same viewing times as the current exhibition.

To coincide with this exhibition a guided walk will take place on Sunday August 5, before which, organisers hope to have some vintage cars on display.

A Summer Fayre will be held on July 14 with stalls in the Visitor Centre, Victorian Chapel, the Northey Rooms and outside- weather permitting. Stalls include plants, bric-a-brac, home made cakes, jewellery and books.

Meanwhile the craft club ladies who meet every Wednesday morning are busy, knitting, sewing and making all sorts of wonderful items to sell on their stall. Refreshments, or for the more adventurous, Prosseco, with strawberries and cream, will be available to purchase from the cafe.

Plymouth Phoenix Chorale, directed by Marcus Alleyne, will be presenting a concert of music to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War on July 7 at 7.30pm at Plymouth Guildhall.

Plymouth Phoenix Chorale will be joined by singers and musicians drawn from Devon and Cornwall to perform a programme including ‘The Armed Man’ – A Mass for Peace by Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins, and ‘Tunes from the Trenches’. The Armed Man charts the growing menace of a descent into war, interspersed with moments of reflection, while it ends with the hope for peace in a new millennium, when ‘sorrow, pain and death can be overcome’. The report, published by the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards, has highlighted the new business capitals that offer distinct advantages which help drive success and growth within specific specialist sectors. However, even outside of the five identified areas, there’s still good news right across the UK. Whilst London is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous financial hubs, Plymouth (digital), Birmingham (connectivity), Cardiff (talent), Leeds (affordability), and Brighton (start-ups) are the five main newly identified business capitals.

In 2017, Plymouth launched the STEM Plymouth Strategic Plan, which is designed to drive the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and establish itself as the South West’s leading city in the field.

Professor Kevin Jones, Chair of the STEM Forum, said: “Plymouth’s vision is to become a thriving, innovative international ocean city with science, technology, engineering and maths driving the region’s growth and productivity.”

One year on, more than a third of Plymouthbased respondents (35%) said that the city’s large number of digital businesses are driving growth in the area, and one in five (21%) said that an investment in digital skills such as coding is also a factor.

As well as the areas seeing the most business success, the report also found that two-thirds (66%) of senior business professionals find it easy to attract and retain talent, with larger businesses (701-1000 employees) finding it easiest (73%).

Further, HR (86%) and technology firms (80%) find talent retention the easiest. Businesses reported competitive salaries (47%), affordability (46%) and young people choosing to stay in the area after university (43%) as the best ways to keep top talent.

The report also revealed the most awarded areas of the UK, with award winning businesses reporting a boost in morale (57%), increase in customer trust (51%) and boost for industry recognition (47%).

The Lloyds Bank National Business Awards are now in their 17th year, and are the UK’s most prestigious and independent awards programme.

It recognises and rewards enterprise excellence, innovation and also ethical practice in the UK, across all industry sectors.

One year from the date of the 2017 General Election, the new office has been opened to ‘do politics differently’. Unlike most MPs who have offices in business parks, their own homes or in inaccessible locations, Luke Pollard has chosen to open an office in the most accessible part of Plymouth – in the city centre.

The office has been designed to improve access for people in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport to their representative in Parliament.

The new office is right in the heart of the city centre at 13 Frankfort Gate, Plymouth, PL1 1QA, close to Plymouth City Market as well as important local services like Plymouth Community Homes’ offices and the Plymouth Credit Union.

The office will be open on weekdays and Saturdays and will provide a drop-in service to improve quality of service and increased, round-the-clock access for those who work or are busy during the working week. Since the election, Luke and his team have been working in temporary office locations.

Luke Pollard MP said: “When I was elected I said I wanted to do politics differently and I’m proud to be the first Plymouth MP to have an office in our city centre. As well as marking a fresh start, the office will provide a better access and a flexible service that people in our city need today.”

The shop unit in Frankfort Gate was empty for months. Luke has taken the office on a long lease from landlords, Plymouth Community Homes. All

the work to refit the shop has been undertaken by local firms. Luke will be publishing refit costs in due course once the final bills have come in for the refit work.

Work begins on Central Park events field Work is under way on the latest part of the £9 million Central Park improvements plan.

The events field, located to the south west of the clock tower, between the skate park and the play area, is getting a long-awaited makeover to ensure that it is fit for the future.

Regular visitors to the park will know that the field is used for visiting events like the circus and fair which draw a lot of people into the park. However, the field suffers from poor drainage which means

it often floods, making it inaccessible and unsightly for a large part of the year.

The improvements will provide new and improved drainage facilities and a grass paving surface which allows grass to grow through as well as withstand the weight of heavy vehicles. This will prevent the site from flooding or damage from heavy vehicles and footfall, keeping it usable and presentable all year round.

Mains electricity and water points will also be installed to remove the need for noisy generators or water pipes that

cross main paths.

The newly improved field will enable the council to host more family-friendly events to encourage a wider range of people into the park for health and well-being and to enjoy its natural environment.

The works will be carried out by SWH and is expected to continue into the autumn.

A new team is being set up to tackle rough sleeping in Plymouth.

Research reveals public view on who is to blame for marine litter

Members of the public are more likely to blame the global marine litter crisis on retailers, industry and government, according to new research led by the University of Plymouth.

However, they have less faith in those agencies’ motivation and competence to address the problem, placing greater trust in scientists and environmental groups to develop effective and lasting solutions.

The results were among the findings of a Europe-wide study which asked more than 1,100 members of the general public about their attitudes to marine litter.

It showed more than 95 per cent of people reported having seen litter when they visited the coast, and such experiences were associated with higher concern and a willingness to adapt personal behaviour to address the problem.

There was also growing appreciation and concern about the threat litter poses to wildlife

within the marine environment, vastly outweighing other fears such as the impact on tourism and the fishing and shipping industries.

Direct releases into the sea and at the coast were perceived to be more likely routes for waste to enter the marine environment than overflows from water treatment or landfill sites.

And when asked about the key factors contributing to the problem, people attributed it predominantly to the use of plastic in products and packaging, human behaviour when disposing of litter, and the single use nature of plastics.

The research, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, is the first European public survey to focus solely on marine litter and people’s attitudes towards it.

Dr Sabine Pahl, Associate Professor (Reader) in the University of Plymouth’s School of Psychology, is the study’s corresponding author. She said: “Marine litter is an issue without borders. But human behaviour in its many forms is the sole

A Multi Agency Rough Sleeper team is being created as part of a concerted effort to help people sleeping rough off the streets and into more permanent, settled lifestyles.

Plymouth City Council together with Shekinah, the Salvation Army, Plymouth Access to Housing, BCHA and Westward Housing Group submitted the bid and have been awarded £363,000 by the Government as part of a major push.

As well as the outreach support, the Council will be working with partners to make more accommodation available.

There are currently 27 people sleeping rough in the city and the team will be committed to working with those individuals on a more tailored basis to encourage progress from the sleeping rough towards independent living in the community.

Mike Taylor of Plymouth Access to Housing said: “We know a more tailored approach has the potential to transform people’s lives. In the recent bad weather a gentleman who had been living in the woods for a long time came in to emergency accommodation when the weather was particularly harsh. This meant we were able to engage with him more, to start talking to him about his situation and to help.”

The funding will also enable the council to expand its severe weather emergency protocol – providing emergency accommodation for longer.

Other aspects of the project include expanding the Housing First pilot plan with Plymouth Community Homes – where the people are given support through their tenancy so that they become more settled and better able to live independently in their own homes.

Hope Festival is highlight of Refugee Week

Plymouth Hope’s ninth Annual Hope Festival launched a successful Refugee Week in Plymouth on June 16 at Brickfields Sport Centre.

A great crowd enjoyed the free activities which celebrated refugees’ contributions in the UK and the substantial efforts by both newcomers and the host community in Plymouth to live together in better, more integrated ways.

The event’s main stage hosted musicians from across the South West, as well as those originally coming from Africa and the Middle East. There was also a host of diverse arts and cultural activities, from graffiti art to henna tattoos, hair braiding, face painting and drumming.

There was hot curry and tea and coffee for everyone – handy to warm up with as the

weather decided to blow a gale – although youngsters kept hot on the free inflatable fun courtesy of Mr Bounce.

The main attraction was, as usual, the huge football tournament which hosted over 32 male and female teams, and age groups from under nines to 16 plus.

Football has been at the very heart of the festival, and its organisers, Plymouth Hope FC have been using the universal love of the game to foster community and social cohesion. The goal of the original Festival in 2009 was to find a way to bring people together to celebrate diversity and enjoy each other’s cultures by using football as the main tool alongside music, art, food and children activities.

celebrate the contribution of refugees in the UK. Making inner-city driving a thing of pleasure!

Driving in the city can be at times, a little stressful to say the least. Roads seem to be getting busier, rush hour is an endless sea of nose-to-tail frustrated commuters and parking when you finally get home can be a worry even before you’ve set off on your journey! For those that live in the inner city, parking is an everyday battle. Get home after a certain time and you know you’re walking home from the space you’ve eventually managed to nab three streets down. Don’t even get me started on a Plymouth Argyle match day…

It’s true to say that parking for us

inner-city dwellers can be a total headache. That is of course, unless you drive a purpose-built city car like the Fiat 500.

Getting home after 6pm, I find myself more often than not in a fortunate position where there is a space just big enough for my smart little 500 Convertible. Planners give green light for development of 21-storey building on Money Centre site

Planning permission has been secured for a mixed use development in the ‘tall building’ zone of Plymouth city centre, bringing with it jobs, student accommodation, office space and a new 105-bed hotel.

Plymouth City Council passed a resolution to approve plans to demolish the existing Money Centre building at Drake Circus and create a 21-storey modern building in keeping with the city scape.

National consultancy Pegasus Group, on behalf of a London based property development company, put forward the plans comprising: • 554 student bedrooms • 1,858 sq metres of Grade ‘A’ office space • a 105-bedroom hotel • 149 sq metres of flexible retail accommodation Jim Tarzey, executive director for Pegasus Group, said: “This is an

exciting mixed-use development proposal that will result in a new ‘tall building’ of high quality design on a prime gateway site that will be a welcome addition to the Plymouth skyline.

“The scheme delivers a package of overall benefits to the local economy, including replacement Grade A office accommodation and a new hotel on site, as well as indirect benefits such as financial contributions to the area and a new office development on the regeneration scheme adjacent to Plymouth Railway Station.”

Developers claim the economic benefits of the scheme to the region are likely to be substantial, with the plans supporting 374 full time jobs, construction investment over the two and half year build programme estimated at £38m, and £8.4m predicted to be spent annually by the new students.

Jim added: “The site forms part of the designated ‘tall building zone’

and the design has been created to blend in with both existing and proposed developments.

“Plymouth has set out its ambitions to have a tall building zone for over a decade, and while there has been some progress, this development should provide a welcome addition to the city skyline, with a modern, attractive and highquality build.“ The public realm immediately around the site will be extensively remodelled with the planting of 18 native trees to compensate for the loss of the existing five trees.

As well as tree planting and other improvements at ground level, landscaping for the site includes the provision of five green spaces on the roofscape, where the seed mix will encourage butterflies, bees and ecological diversity.

Work is anticipated to start on the redevelopment in 2019/2020.

Oceans of opportunity as local schools widen work horizons with marina visit

Scores of Year 5 school children from four inner city Plymouth primary schools have taken part in a series of inspiring and educational sessions at Mayflower Marina in the lead up to World Ocean Day.

The trip to the award winning marina is part of the innovative ‘Widening Horizons’ programme developed by the ‘Millfields Inspired’ charity, which is based in Stonehouse.

The dynamic Widening Horizons programme, which is now in its tenth year, aims to motivate young people living and learning in Britain’s Ocean City by giving them an experience and taste for the world of work, in order to inform their future career choices.

Josanne Stewart, development manager at Millfields Inspired said: “The trip to Mayflower Marina is one of the highlights of the programme. The children live in Stonehouse, so the sea is their neighbour. This is an opportunity to show them the variety of jobs that can be found in, on and around the water, whilst also delivering some strong messages about looking after our ocean.

“We are so fortunate to have Mayflower Marina, Sonardyne International and Clean Coast Services who really get the children engaged in their activities and in doing so are expanding the children’s knowledge of what jobs might be open to them in the future.”

The sessions for local schools including Plymouth School of Creative Arts, St Andrew’s Primary and St Peter’s C of E School and Pilgrim Primary included a welcome and tour of the marina from Mayflower Marina managing director Charles Bush.

The children also ventured on board a floating classroom, courtesy of sonar specialists Sonardyne, to experience the sonar equipment in operation and get hands on experience with equipment.

Tom Rooney, lead trainer with Sonardyne International said: “It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to showcase how many diverse jobs you can have in connection with working on and near the ocean. We are so lucky to be living in Britain’s Ocean City which has companies with world renowned maritime expertise based here, these are potential employment channels open to young people in the future.”

The educational school trip was rounded off with an enlightening session about how to care for the ocean and coastline from award winning ‘environmental warrior’ Rikkie Carette of Clean Coast Services.

Rikkie, who highlights the problem of plastic pollution by creating one off art sculptures from recycled ocean debris, was a huge hit with the children who were fascinated by the topic and left inspired to create their own recycled artwork.

“Furthermore, many of the skills utilised within the marine sector are also highly transferable with the automotive and aircraft industries. The Millfield’s Inspired, Widening Horizons project is a terrific way to show local children the career opportunities that exist within their city. Plymouth’s corporate plan - on a single page!

Local people are at the heart of Plymouth City Council’s proposed Corporate Plan.

The new plan places priority on delivering consistent, high quality frontline services while reducing inequality to deliver a fairer city that everyone can be proud of.

Councillors are being asked to adopt the new Corporate Plan 2018-2022 at the council meeting on June 25. The innovative approach of showing the whole plan on a page which has been copied by many other organisations is retained – as is the city’s vision to be one of Europe’s most vibrant waterfront cities where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “We are on a mission to make Plymouth a fairer city where everyone can make a positive contribution. That is all about having a city where services are good and people feel the benefits of a growing economy. We want Plymouth to be a vibrant, exciting, welcoming place to be for all our citizens, visitors and businesses. A place to be proud of.”

The council’s priorities fall into two key themes – a growing city and a caring council. Growing city is all about ensuring the city is clean and tidy, has an efficient transport network and a broad range

of homes. It will be a place where economic growth benefits as many people as possible with quality jobs and where people have valuable skills.

There is also a focus on ensuring there is a vibrant cultural offer and being a green sustainable city that cares about the environment. The caring council focuses on ensuring the most vulnerable citizens are supported as well as enabling young people to achieve good school results, reducing health inequality and ensuring the city is a safe and welcoming place.

“Our values are really important because they are at the core of what public service is all about,” added Cllr Evans. “We are a democratically led organisation which takes responsibility for its actions. We will be honest and open with people - treating them with respect and championing fairness and opportunity. And we are determined to work co-operatively with our partners to do the best we can for our city and communities.”

Aquarium running fun sessions for toddlers

Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium is taking its award-winning toddler sessions into the great outdoors with the brand-new ‘Ocean Todds’ for a special six-week summer series.

For the first time youngsters aged between two and four will be able to take part in games, crafts, music and science activities at Teats Hill - next door to the Aquarium.

They will be able to find treasure on the beach, discover rock pool creatures, make their own puppets and make homes for hermit crabs.

Tavy Place residents set a tidy example

Compton Ward litter picking volunteers were out in force at the beginning of June in the Mutley area. While they picked up usual quantities of discarded drink cans, plastic bottles, empty crisp packets and crushed food cartons from the surrounding areas (totalling to 12 large litter bags), there was one notable exception.

When the volunteers moved into Tavy Place, there was nothing for them to do. The road and pavements were completely litter free and all litter bins were neatly aligned with their lids shut. In short, the area was immaculate.

Compton Ward councillor David Fletcher, who set up and runs the litter picking group, said, ‘Tavy Place is a text book example of how residents, in conjunction with, the Street Cleansing Department of Plymouth City Council, have kept the street clean and tidy.

It is a real pleasure to be able to report some positive news on the litter front, rather than always having to highlight and pick up large volumes of litter in other areas. If Tavy Place can do it, perhaps other streets may like to follow suit.’

Ovenclean is just the job for Mark Starting up your own business is not for the faint hearted.

However, despite years working in the construction industry, when circumstances forced a change in direction, local man Mark Pascoe took his hard graft ethos and is using it in the world of oven cleaning.

“I don’t rush the job,” explained Mark, who only charges a flat fee for each visit. “I like to do it properly, and this can take well over two hours, up to four hours if I am cleaning a Range cooker, hood and extractor.

“Ovenclean only work with environmentally friendly products rather than abrasive or caustic cleaners, so, although the cleaning is hard work, I am not subjecting myself or the household to any nasty odours. It also means that the oven can be used straight away, and the whole process is completely safe for pets, or people with breathing conditions.”

On the second Friday of each month we have free meetings and invite MPs, local councillors, local businesses, anyone able to speak on issues that affect older people, to come and talk to us. These meetings are held in the Wolseley Trust Community Building (next to Sheila’s Café in Wolseley Road), behind the Co-op just down from Milehouse traffic lights going towards St Budeaux.

These meetings start 10.30am and end at 1pm, many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car parking is usually available. We also have regular social meetings and would like to advise everyone that these will now be held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth (PL2 2EL) just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single £20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Leading Plymouth researcher made OBE in Queen’s Honours A world-leading researcher and role model for women in science and engineering has been made an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Deborah Greaves, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Plymouth, has been recognised for her significant contributions to research into offshore renewable energy.

That work, and her leadership at a national level, is having a direct impact on the expansion of a sector which will play a key role in the UK’s future energy production.

But she is also at the forefront of inspiring more women and girls to consider a career in engineering, a profession that has traditionally been male-dominated.

Professor Greaves’ award reflects her impact in both areas, and her nomination was supported by leading figures from both academia and industry.

She said: “This has come as a huge surprise, and I am of course delighted to receive such personal recognition for my work. Former Stonehouse hostel turned into flats as part of empty homes scheme

A former hostel in Plymouth which had been empty for seven years has been converted into 11 rent-to-buy flats as part of Plymouth City Council’s ongoing quest to reduce empty homes in the city.

The Old School House in Millbay – formerly known as The Ship Hostel – is now occupied and had been vacant since 2011.

The flats are the result of a pioneering partnership between the Council, South Devon Rural Housing Association, QSH, and local building contractors Classic Builders.

Representatives from all the organisations and local estate agents Maitlands attended a special ceremony to officially hand over keys to Clare, the first tenant to move into one of the flats.

Under the rent-to-buy scheme, a proportion of the tenant’s rental payments are put towards the deposit they need to secure a mortgage to buy their home (up to a maximum of 10%), whilst those who choose not to purchase during this time can continue renting their homes for a further 15 years.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Cooperative Development, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see the conversion of the former Ship Hostel into 11 flats as part of our long-term commitment to reducing the number of empty homes in Plymouth.

“These are good quality homes and are a fantastic example of what can be achieved with cooperative working, when a range of partners work together in this way to bring long term vacant buildings back into use.

“We have committed £1m of funding to provide a range of initiatives to tackle empty homes and provide more homes for local people as part of our Plan For Homes.”

Steve Prime, chief executive of South Devon Rural Housing, said “We are pleased to be involved with this very innovative way of getting people into home ownership. The scheme allows tenants, not only to build a deposit whist paying rent, but importantly helps then build credit history making getting an all important mortgage more realistic.

“The project is a demonstration of what can be achieved when working in partnership for a common goal.”

Paul Stone, director at Maitlands Estate Agents, said: “This has been a fantastic scheme to be involved in, with so many people struggling to save enough money to get on to the property ladder this is the perfect opportunity for them. Rather than renting and effectively throwing money away this gives buyers an opportunity to be independent, build up a credit history whilst still saving there deposit.

“The response we have had has been fantastic with just the last few apartments remaining, this has been helped by the quality of the building both inside and out.

We would love to see similar schemes to this rolled out across the city” Mark Fielding, director of QSH, said: “QSH is

very pleased to have worked with the council, South Devon Rural Housing and our subcontractor, Classic Builders, in bringing back into productive use this historic building. We hope this funding model can deliver more good quality housing at affordable rents and prices for tenants.”

Carers Week in Plymouth came this year with added music.

Plymouth City Council, and Caring for Carers – a partnership between Improving Lives Plymouth and Age UK - worked together to ensure the estimated 29,000 carers in Plymouth knew that help is available in the city, and part of this was a week of events between June 11 and 17 including music (performed by local musicians who also happen to be carers) and art sessions, supported by local charities Plymouth Music Zone, Colebrook South West Ltd and Improving Lives Plymouth.

In addition, the council has recently joined the Employers for Carers scheme, which will help it and a number of other organisations in the city support carers who work for them.

The scheme will provide practical resources, advice and information designed to help employers look after staff who are juggling work alongside caring for someone.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.

Young carers are children and young people who provide care and support for loved ones. Support available for young carers in Plymouth includes group sessions at Efford Youth Centre every Tuesday evening.

The sessions are free to join but you would need to have been referred by a professional such as your doctor, an educational psychologist, health visitor or your school.

The sessions include fun activities like cooking, arts, sports, pool, gaming or just the chance to meet and socialise with other young carers. To find out what help you can get, email gateway@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 668000.

As an avid football fan, I have loved major tournaments for as long as I can remember.

The anticipation after the teams have qualified, the expectation after the squads have been announced and the ups and downs of following my team as the tournament unfolds.

Being English it does usually end in heartbreak, traditionally after a penalty shootout against the Germans or the Italians. Nevertheless I love it.

Like many millions around the world I will be glued to the screen for the next month watching as many games as I can. The theme of this year’s Carers Week, led nationally by Carers UK, was coming together to build communities that support the health and wellbeing of carers. Across the UK there are around 6.5 million people who care for a parent, partner, child or friend.

Improving Lives Plymouth, caring for carers manager Lee Sewrey said: “This carers week we pledged to facilitate activities and events that provided health and wellbeing benefits for carers and allowed them to have a little ‘me time’.”

Regular events for carers in Plymouth include a number of regular music sessions at Plymouth Music Zone for carers including: • Every other Monday: 10am to 12pm, Friends Uke-Nited for adult carers who have a little ukulele experience, singing and playing together with a view to performing in community venues.

• Every Monday: 1pm to 2pm, Carefree Choir for adult carers without those they care for, singing in harmony together for a little breathing space.

• Every Tuesday: 10.30am to 11.30am, Sharing and Caring for carers of older and disabled people, singing as a group for much needed respite and laughter.

Honesty is the best policy

BY DAVE SIMPSON, STATION MANAGER CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH a world cup for me to talk to them about different managers, transfers and all kinds of others aspects of the beautiful game. However when it comes to more serious matters like how we’re really doing in life the conversation doesn’t flow quite so freely.

When asked, ‘how are you?’ by a close friend I know that quite often I’ll respond with ‘good thanks’ regardless of how I have actually been feeling. I am quite often very genuinely ‘good thanks’ but on those days when that isn’t the case I know that a close friend might be able to help and not opening up and moving the conversation on to football or something else more trivial doesn’t really help anyone.

I’m aware this isn’t an issue just for men but I do know that my wife, my mum and other women in my life are often better at sharing how they are really feeling and helping each other through the hard times.

Sadly statistics in the UK do suggest that there is a gulf in how men and women cope when times get tough.

According to the Office of National Statistics a staggering 76% of all suicides

are committed by men. There will be multiple factors as to why that figure exists but I wouldn’t be surprised if part of it has to do with men not talking honestly about how they’re feeling.

I wonder whether some of this has to do with the phrase ‘man up’.

Unfortunately, in my experience at least, to be a man often means to be strong and unwavering both physically and emotionally. Figures released around mental health week in 2017 suggested that only 1 in 5 men would seek help for anxiety or depression.

It seems that men are prone to putting on a brave face and playing pretend. This may fool those around us but it doesn’t fool ourselves and nor does it fool the one who knows us best.

There is a famous quote in the Bible which says; ‘People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.’ God knows what is really going on inside all of us. There is no use hiding from Him. Not only does He see us as we truly are but He cares about us more than we’ll ever know and wants us to flourish in life.

The first step in that journey, whether you are a man or a woman, is being honest.

If, like me, you are hooked on world cup fever then enjoy it! Make the most of every moment and every match. Then when it comes to the post-match pint, if you know deep down that everything is not ok then please don’t simply ‘man up’ instead open up to those around you who care.

Apprentice painter Jess shines A City College apprentice from Cattedown has claimed top spot at the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year regional final.

Now in its 14th year, the prestigious painting and decorating competition celebrates young talent from across the UK. Winner Jess Cruiks, who is in the first year of her apprenticeship with Spectrum Property Care, said: “This is the first competition I have taken part in so I never expected to win. It was honestly a shock! Everyone else worked so hard on their own boards and the standard of work was so high.

“I have been thoroughly supported by the college and my employer in the lead up to this competition and got in a lot of practice which really paid off. I’m so happy.”

Skye-Ella Boswell, who lives in Hooe, came second and is currently a painting and decorating apprentice with Stephen Cartwright. She said: “When I heard I was the runner-up, I was very pleased with myself and it has been a big confidence booster. The competition was a great way to broaden my skills and use a range of new tools.”

The competitors had to demonstrate a wide range of skills to impress the judges and be in with a chance of making it to the national finals where they can win a cash reward, as well as a fantastic prize bundle of quality decorating tools.

The nine-strong team won the ‘Highly Commended’ status in the Community Award category at the National Express Group Values Awards that celebrate achievements of the 47,000 global National Express Group staff from Spain, Morocco, Bahrain, North America, Germany and the UK. At the awards ceremony at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, the team were personally congratulated by group chief executive Dean Finch for their outstanding fundraising efforts.

The team were nominated for the Values Awards after last year raising more than £4,000 for charity - the highest amount within the company’s UK divisions - for local charities including the RSPCA, Macmillan Cancer Support and Help for Heroes.

The relatively young team, which only formed when Plymouth Coach Station opened its doors to the public in September 2016, won praise from all over the business for their tireless charity work including a ‘Big Easter Egg Appeal’, cake bake sales, open days and raffles.

They also formed numerous partnerships with local businesses who donated prizes, went on six volunteering days and hosted nine work experience placements for local school pupils in order to help children

Members of the Plymouth Coach Station team at the awards ceremony enhance their skills. Plymouth Station manager Donna McDonald said: “I’m so thrilled that our little team has been recognised among so many other fantastic teams from all over the business. We are a tight knit group who support each other and above all we love helping others.”

National Express Coach managing director Chris Hardy said: “I’m proud and delighted that the staff at Plymouth Coach Station have

won this commendation. Getting recognition when you are up against some incredible teams across a global business is not easy but Plymouth’s amazing fundraising efforts have been truly inspiring.”

The Plymouth Coach Station team won the overall National Express UK Coach Community Award earlier this year which meant they were finalists for the National Express Group Community Award at the Group Values Awards.
