Sherford Life Have you heard the one about the mustard seed before? “When planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can By Revd Tom Brassil perch in its shade.” (Mark 4:32, the Bible). It turns out that small things really can grow into big things! What are you hoping to grow this year? Perhaps, like our family, you’re hoping to try your hand at vegetable gardening. Or perhaps it’s an investment you are hoping grows. Maybe you’re looking to grow a new skill or a new healthy exercise habit. Or grow your family. Or simply grow as a person. If you’re in the new town of Sherford, or one of the other new housing areas we have around this side of Plymouth, perhaps you are hoping for great things as your area grows. Are you hoping for the town to grow big enough for a shop, a café or a community centre? I certainly am! Here’s the catch about growing things: it sometimes seems to take a very long time. It requires patience. But with patient perseverance, great things can grow. Life at the end of 2019 may not look how you expect it to now, but growth remains a real possibility. So let me encourage you at the beginning of the year that great things really can come from small beginnings. Let me encourage you to start 2019 with a positive, hopeful outlook. Of course, the original setting for the story of the mustard seed was Jesus talking about what God is doing. It may be tempting to look at the Christian faith and scorn it, to think of it as something weak and unimpressive. Jesus’ disciples almost certainly felt that way too – just 12 uneducated men being given the task of starting a worldwide movement. But a couple of thousand years later that tiny group with their seemingly-feeble message have transformed the world. Today 2 billion people call themselves Jesus’ followers. And down the ages Christians have contributed more to education, healthcare, welfare, protection of children, charity and the demolition of the slave trade than any other group in history. In other words, let’s pause before we turn our noses up at small beginnings and seemingly unimpressive things. There may be more there than meets the eye! Perhaps 2019 might be the year you consider looking into this yourself for the first time. If you’re in the Sherford area on a Sunday morning, come and join us at 10am in Sherford Vale School as we explore this message of Jesus together. Or why not find out where your nearest church is? From my own (admittedly biased) perspective, I think you will find that discovering Jesus might just be the best thing you do this year! If you have any questions about Sherford life, or if you would like to chat more about what would make 2019 a really positive year, please contact me at tom@ sherfordchurch.net

Cuddly toys donation brings joy to care home residents A Plymstock woman has donated a collection of cuddly toys and dolls to a local care home - to help residents who have dementia. Mother of two Kelly Freeman presented the bears and dolls to Wisteria House Dementia Care just before Christmas - and her generous gift was gratefully received. Wisteria House owns two care homes in Plymouth specialising in quality of life for elderly people living with dementia. It is estimated that approximately 15 per cent of the people living in the homes engage positively with either doll therapy or pet therapy. Kelly decided to provide the soft toys and dolls to Wisteria because her mother has Alzheimers and she was impressed with the quality of care and support provided by staff. Kelly said: “The residents’ reactions were magic. The staff were all very grateful for the donation. Each bear and doll came with a name and Christmas bell for the residents to enjoy.” She added: “The staff team at Wisteria House, together with supporting families and close friends are very generous with their time and affection. We do not believe the individuals engage in this type therapy from a lack of or substitute for affection. We believe it is from missing something to nurture or care for although sometimes a sense of purpose can be a reason. “Most normally only engage with only one specific doll or pet and are reluctant to share unless they are confident you can love their baby or pet as they do; they are constant companions and are with them when they sleep and eat their meals.

“It is important that the staff team treat the doll or artificial pet as though they are real, for instance the way a member of staff holds a baby, that their presentation is to a high ‘well loved’ standard including for instance helping the baby doll to put on the appropriate night clothes and have a high chair and appropriate food at meal times. That their pet is well brushed, stroked, hugged and well fed. “The dolls can also help the staff team with communication, for example a lady was incredibly reluctant to have a seat belt on in the car, but when a member of staff put her special ‘toddler’ doll named Sam into his own seat on the mini bus and put the seat belt on Sam, she could see what we wanted her to do. “When the staff team are trying to communicate

with an individual living in later or advanced stages of dementia, who are now unable to verbally communicate, it helps if the member of staff first shows how loving they can be towards their baby or pet first by stroking the cat or being affectionate towards their baby, it gains trust with supporting the individual to take their medications and so on.” For one lady living at Wisteria House her favourite day was when a birthday party was held for her ‘toddler’ doll called Sam, complete with birthday cake, balloons, presents and cards and inviting the staff team’s younger children. Even the other people living with dementia in the home and the lady’s own grandchildren, were fully engrossed in her positive sense and her own unique feelings.

Elmer visits Kiddi Caru

Children at Kiddi Caru’s Plympton day nursery have been embracing their differences, following the example set by one of their favourite literary characters Elmer the Elephant, who paid them a special visit recently. The original Elmer book was published in 1968, introducing the cheerful and optimistic elephant’s now famously colourful patchwork pattern. Later stories explored themes relating to diversity, with Elmer discovering that when he tries to change his appearance in order to 'blend in' with the other elephants, they no longer recognise him, or accept him as one of their own.

A giant Elmer joined the children during their story time to read the famous book, and the children discussed how different they all are and learned about inclusion. They also made their own artwork inspired by the story, using brightly coloured tissue paper to create their own Elmers. Tracey Callan, nursery manager, said: “Elmer is one of those characters that children have loved for generations. He has a wonderful personality and the stories really capture their imaginations. When Elmer paints himself grey to blend in and it begins to rain, washing the grey away to reveal his true colours, he realises that his friends love

him just the way he is. "This is an incredibly positive message for children of all ages about staying true to who you are and celebrating your uniqueness.”

Sherford’s Stone Age history recognised Once home to ancient Stone Age communities, Sherford’s extensive history has been nationally recognised with the development securing a coveted nomination in the Current Archaeology Awards. Celebrating the projects and teams that have made an outstanding contribution to archaeology, Sherford has been nominated in the ‘Rescue Project of the Year’ awards category – and public voting is now open. The ongoing archaeology work at Sherford is funded by the Sherford Consortium and is being carried out by leading archaeology and heritage practice Wessex Archaeology, alongside Devon County Council and consultants, AECOM. Archaeological investigations have been taking place at Sherford since work first began on the new town three years ago, with findings revealing that the landscape was once home to ancient communities, dating back over 6,000 years - proving that people were living in the area much earlier than

previously thought. Exciting findings, including the discovery of ancient artefacts, have helped to shed new light on how early Devon settlers lived, worked and died thousands of years ago. Just some of the exciting unearthed artefacts include prehistoric pottery, Bronze Age tools, two roundhouses and barrows. One of the most significant and rare artefacts, which has recently been discovered, is a large amount of Neolithic pottery dating back to between 3800-3700BC. Other major discoveries also include tools used for sharpening metal objects, the remains of a bronze knife, as well as a large polished stone axe, which had been broken in two. It is expected that following examination, many of the artefacts will eventually be on public display at a local museum. Melissa Cloke, sales and marketing director, Sherford Consortium said: “Sherford’s landscape has been home to communities for thousands of years and it’s fantastic that its history, along with the work and dedication of our expert archaeology teams, has been nationally recognised. “With more residents now living at Sherford than ever before, the town is quickly becoming a thriving new community, with an emerging history of its own. As one of the largest new developments in the region, it is also vital that its history is uncovered and protected as construction progresses. “We are proud to be funding this work, which has provided a unique opportunity for people to find out more about early Devon communities, with exciting finds helping to shed new light on how families lived over 6,000 years ago. We hope that these findings will encourage more people to learn about the region’s rich and diverse history.” Gareth Chaffey, Senior Project Manager for Wessex Archaeology said:

“We are delighted that our work at Sherford has been nominated for the award. Our excavations on the site have helped to show that the landscape around Sherford has been inhabited, utilised, farmed and developed over several millennia. “The future of the site is inherently and intrinsically linked to its past. What is important is that future generations can learn how their town has developed over time and how that past will, in some part at least, define the development from here on in”. Sherford is nominated in the ‘Rescue Project of the Year’ category in the Current Archaeology Awards. Voting is open until February 11 and votes can be cast at www. archaeology.co.uk/vote For more information about Sherford, visit www.sherford.org.

A range of new motorsports activities could be hosted at the speedway track at Marsh Mills if a planning application to remove restrictions on its use is approved. Buggy and quad racing could be among the new offering to supplement the current motorbike racing which goes on at the site. The venue is understood to be currently licensed to allow speedway racing every week during the season which runs from 15 March to 31 October each year. Currently races usually take place on a Friday evening from 7.15pm to 9.45pm. The current planning consent for the site contains a restriction preventing it for any other form of motorised sport or activity, except for rider training and use by fully silenced mini-motorbikes. Although the site is currently permitted to hold speedway races every week during the season there are not sufficient teams in the National League to provide competitive racing every week at the arena. There were ten fallow racing weeks at the arena during the 2018 season and three further weeks of racing inactivity due to bad weather. In seeking the removal of the current planning restriction the applicant has told planners: “The operators of the site would wish to provide continuity in the spectator offer and it is important to remember that support for any team event is very dependant on periodicity and breaks in a schedule result in the loss of support. “Speedway racing is, like all professional sport, a business and, at a minimum, must cover its operating costs. Whilst events missed due to weather and other unforeseen events are unavoidable, the loss of revenue caused by the lack of fixtures is difficult to sustain. The promoters do not wish to seek consent for additional use over and above the current consent but solely to make the best of that which is available.” It is understood that members of the planning committee attended a site demonstration at the arena at the end of October involving some of the proposed new vehicles and that sound levels of up to 106.9dB were recorded. Members of the public wishing to make comment on the application have until 29 January 2019 to do so and the application reference is 18/02083/S73. Further details of the application can be read on the planning pages at www.plymouth.gov.uk (story courtesy of www.PlymptonPodcast. org.uk)

Improvements to one of the busiest roads in Plymouth have been given the go-ahead. The scheme will see ageing traffic signal equipment on Plymouth Road in Plympton replaced with the latest technology and will also provide more road capacity whilst making pedestrian and cycling improvements. A major part of the scheme is an extension to the eastbound, right turn lane at Cot Hill where the road will be widened, reducing queues at this junction. An estimated 40,000 vehicles use the B3416 Plymouth Road and its often heavily congested with motorists experiencing delays during peak periods and bus services suffering from unreliable journey times. Known as the Eastern Corridor Junction Improvements Programme the objectives are to reduce delays, upgrade pedestrian

crossings and provide new cycle facilities. An important outcome will be an improvement in journey times for motorists and service reliability for buses, as well as discouraging rat-running through Woodford. Following completion of detailed ground investigations and surveys, additional funding has been approved for the scheme, which is set to begin in 2019. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, said: “The people of Plympton have been waiting a long time for improvements to this busy section of the network and I am pleased that all of the funding is now in place. “We are anticipating large scale growth being proposed in this part of the city, which will generate increased demand for travel so it is important that we get on with the job of making this part of the network

fit for the future.” The budget for the scheme has increased from £3.3m to £4.6m with the increase being met from developer contributions identified for strategic transport improvements. The scheme is supported by £2.1m of grant funding from the Department for Transport. Construction of the scheme is planned to start in 2019 and will continue for approximately eight months. The first task will be to clear the vegetation along the Plymouth Road at Cot Hill junction. When this is complete, the installation of the mini-roundabout at the Cot Hill at Merafield Road junction will be amongst the first works carried out. Details of when the works for each of the Plymouth Road junctions will be released as this information is confirmed.

A toddler group which has been running in Plympton for 31 years has closed amid bitter feelings over its demise. Plympton St Mary's Church toddler group had been meeting at St Mary's Church Hall for decades, but closed its doors for the final time in December after issues arose over the cost of hiring the church hall. Although the toddler group took its name after St Mary's Church it was, at the time of its closure, run by a completely separate entity unconnected to the church itself. A parent from the play group who asked not to be named said: "Our lovely play group has closed after 31 years because the church is charging too much rent for the use of the hall. I'm so disappointed in the church allowing an amazing community group which has been invaluable for so many families, including mine, to close its doors for the last time. They should be ashamed." The toddler group was run by Plympton St Mary Church Pre-school which continues to function and still meets and hires the hall for its other groups, but it had been getting free use of the hall for the toddler sessions and this was no longer sustainable for the church which has been recording a deficit in its own finances for a number of years. The Pre-School is set up as an independent charity. It's last three years of annual accounts as filed with the Charity Commissioners for the years 2015 to 2017 show income of between £87,477 and £111,049 per annum and yearly expenditure of between £87,389 and £110,592. In the most recently lodged annual report it is recorded: "The financial year end July 2017 was another; successful, busy and sustainable year for pre-school. We made a fundraising profit of £1,920." The report goes on to comment: "In April 2017 our rent for hiring the Parish Centre was increased by 160% from: £187.50 to £488.00 per week. Our sustainability during this time has been questionable and has been managed through support of voluntary working hours

and registration figures rising." The church's own accounts as filed with the Charity Commissioners show that it has made a loss in four of the past five years, with aggregate income in that time of £784,389 and expenditure of £818,894, an accumulative loss of £34,505. Rev'd Robert Harris said he had tried to be very fair and very reasonable and regretted the toddler group would no longer be meeting at the church hall but the decision to charge rent was driven by a need for the church to balance the books and comply with charity law as well as being fair to other groups who hire the hall. It is understood the Pre-school as a regular block booker of the church hall still gets a favourable rate compared to those who book one off events. Rev'd Harris said: "We regret that the pre-school has felt it necessary to close the toddler group for which they are responsible. It has become necessary for the church to charge rent for the toddler group session because it can no longer afford to subsidise the costs involved and because of the requirements of charity law. The trustees (of the church) are required by law to obtain best value for money. We cannot subsidise an independent organisation." Rev'd Harris was at pains to point out that the toddler group had not been closed by the Parish but by the separately organised Pre-school which ran it who had been free to look for alternative venues if they were not happy to pay the rent charge the church was seeking. A spokesperson for St. Mary's Pre-school said: "The preschool is a community group, registered with the charity commission and, being a non-profit organisation, it has recently had to make the very sad and difficult decision to close the Wednesday morning Toddler Group. Unfortunately, the preschool had no choice but to make this decision, as it can no longer subsidise the group, due to ever rising costs over the last two years. "The Toddler Group was originally started at the

back of St Mary's Church, in September 1987. When it had finished being built, the group moved into the Parish Centre and was run by church member Marguerite Coaker, as part of her ‘Mothers Union’ commitment. "As an outreach group it focused on supporting expectant and new parents and their families. Unfortunately, due to ever increasing administration pressures, Marguerite made the reluctant decision to retire from running the group. The preschool had always worked closely with the Toddler Group and was supported by the church for its work in the community with young families. "The Vicar was Chair of the preschool board of trustees. As there was no one from the church forthcoming to succeed Marguerite, the preschool were approached by the church to take over running of the Toddler Group. The preschool agreed, as it felt that it was too valuable a need in the community to let it close. The church offered Gratis for the group to continue and church members continued to volunteer, serving refreshments and raising the profile of the church. "This community group has created a great history and has formed relationships with so many families especially those serving in HM forces, who have attended when their family members have been away on operational tours. At times like these, people feel so isolated and full of anxiety, sometimes just needing to feel part of something, as often their families are not living nearby. "We are proud of the huge support the group has provided to so many people in our community and how it has been the foundation to so many valuable friendships. It will be sadly missed. "We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have been involved in the Toddler Group, your dedication and love has shone through over its 31 years." A serving Royal Marine from Plymstock has published the first in a planned series of children's books. Chris Hall has been in the marines for almost 22 years and has seen active service in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan but in his spare time he has been putting pen to paper to write a series of children's stories. The first - PC Snap and the Case of the Escaped Lion - has now been published . The character PC Snap is a bit of a family heirloom as he used to feature in impromptu stories Chris' great aunt read to his father as a child. Other characters are based on family connections too, the dog in the book being inspired by one a family friend would bring on camping holidays in Cornwall with the Halls. Chris originally wrote the first in his PC Snap books three years ago but it has only recently been published after he decided to use regular travel time on the train between Plymouth and London to type up the story. If this one turns out to be successful then he will publish others in the series of which there are eight in total. The next one intended for release is PC Snap and the Case of the Stranger in the Woods. Chris was recently interviewed on Hospital Radio by Charlotte Willis. Copies of the first book are available from publishers Austin Macauley as well as via Amazon and some high street book shops. There is an audio interview with Chris Hall online in the latest edition of the Plympton Podcast.

Dot combines hairdressing with therapy thanks to college course

A specialist therapist has turned her new-found passion for hairdressing into developing a unique service for adults with mental health difficulties and additional needs. Dot Prout, who lives in Prince Rock, was working as an art psychotherapist for adults with mental health and learning disabilities when she decided to enrol on a hairdressing course at City College Plymouth. She initially thought the training would come in useful when she retired and might need a way to boost her income. But while on a voluntary placement during her Level 2 Hairdressing course she was struck by the close connection between the hairdresser and the customer discovering the therapeutic potential of a good quality salon experience. Since completing her course, Dot has been working with Peace Hair & Beauty in Oreston to create a weekly ‘quiet’ hairdressing service for people who find salons daunting and overwhelming. She has started her own hairdressing venture ‘Full Head Esteem’ while also working at Stars Hair & Day Spa at City College Plymouth. Dot, who previously worked for Livewell Southwest, said: “On my voluntary placement, I was noticing the rapport established within moments of a client taking

their seat. “They reached a level of therapeutic intimacy it would take me, as a psychotherapist, weeks to establish. “I found myself responding to people in a more honest and real way and I witnessed my clients leaving the salon lifted in mood and self-confidence. “This led to the idea to create a specialist hairdressing service that would improve access to high street hair salon experiences. “I felt the balance shift from my hairdressing being a fun thing to do in my spare time to something I felt most passionately about and wanted to be focusing all of my time and energy on. "In partnership with Julia Calvert at Peace Hair & Beauty, I am creating a ‘quiet’ space for people who find the activities of a hair salon daunting. I will be doing all that I can to adapt my practice, so that people feel relaxed and can fully enjoy the experience at Peace Hair & Beauty Salon. “Another strand of the work will be to raise awareness and help hairdressers and salon owners to develop the skills they need to adapt the way they provide services and the salon environment.” To book an appointment with Dot at Peace Hair & Beauty Salon call 01752 402222.

Festive spirit supports animal sanctuary Christmas is an expensive time of year for most and for Woodside Animal Sanctuary, based in Elfordleigh, costs always soar. The cost of heating and electricity rockets and although historically the numbers of mouths that need feeding do reduce; there has still been in excess of 130 animals on site throughout December and into January. The support from two local companies, Tamar View Nurseries, based in Saltash and Chaplins, based in Plympton, receiving customer donations from their grottos, has been an absolute delight for the sanctuary. Founder Carole Bowles said “Our work in animal welfare, both at the sanctuary and in the community is only possible with the support of local people. We are so grateful to the companies and their customers for continuing to support us”. Chaplins raised £347 and Tamar View Nurseries raised £758, and along with the sanctuary’s own Christmas fundraiser for the tag appeal, which it runs at both the sanctuary and their charity shops, the money will be of massive help at the centre. Carole said: “We have several areas we are currently working hard in, on top of our normal day to day activities and running of the sanctuary. These include trapping, neutering and releasing or rehoming of feral cats from several new colonies, increasing the space and number of pet birds we are able to help and providing an all weather barn to be able to exercise dogs off the lead and meet potential new owners”. City wide walking competition sends Plymouth pupils over the moon! The winners of Plymouth’s first ever Classroom To Moon Challenge have been announced. Prizes included a visit from mobile planetarium Space Odyssey for winning schools or new scooter storage from Scooterpods, providing a real incentive for clocking up those space-minutes. Small prizes of waterbottles, pens or reflective keyrings along the way rewarded ‘Walker of the Week’ in assemblies across Plymouth as well. Compton Church of England Primary School have won a visit from Space Odyssey’s Voyager dome in their school hall in January 2019, Plympton Academy who will welcome the Galileo Dome in March, while Holy Cross Catholic Primary School and Pennycross Primary School have won Scooterpods. The challenge took place in October and November in Plymouth and was part of Plymouth City Council’s Plymotion scheme which aims to encourage more people to walk, cycle or travel by bus. Pupils carried ‘Astro Mo’ from more than 60 of Plymouth’s schools in a walking relay that covered 80 miles and pupils were asked to record how many minutes they walked to and from school – the minutes were then converted to miles to give a grand total of 225638 miles, which is more than the distance to the moon when it is closest to the earth. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, said: “Congratulations to the winners of the Classroom To Moon Challenge and to all the pupils, parents and staff who were involved in making this a great success. We need to do all we can do to encourage more people to walk to

Plaistow Hill Primary also took part in the Challenge

school and this was a great scheme.” Tessa Price, Plymouth City Council’s school travel engagement officer said: “We hoped we would reach our collective target of Astro Mo reaching the moon with all the minutes the children walked but we never expected the journey to be so much fun! Many schools really embraced the idea that walking to their next nearest school and offering a Friendship Flag to them could kickstart a new bond between them. We were delighted when students were raring to meet us at their school gates, even in the rain. I am confident many schoolchildren convinced their parents to leave their cars at home a few more times than usual during October and I hope that this healthy habit continues.” Jake Daykin, head teacher of Hooe Primary Academy said: “Thanks for organising the Classroom To

Moon Challenge. Our children really enjoyed getting involved and we had a great time on the relay walk. The project gave our children the chance to do a lot of maths work and to learn about science and the importance of healthy lifestyles. It also resulted in a lot more of our children (and their parents) walking to and from school, which is always a good thing. We would definitely like to be involved if you run a similar project in the future.” The Plymotion team is now looking at this year’s challenge for Walk To School Month in October 2019, but they also provide advice and support to schools all year round to encourage people to use more sustainable routes to school, such as walking, cycling or travelling by bus. Apprentice Charlotte works her way up to dream promotion A receptionist who rose through the ranks to operations support manager at a growing healthcare company has described how an apprenticeship kickstarted her career. Charlotte Gurd, 42, from Chaddlewood was sceptical about the value of apprenticeships - thinking they were 'just for young people'. But having completed an apprenticeship in management with City College Plymouth she has just been appointed operations support manager at Plympton-based Beacon Medical Group - putting her new-found skills to work in managing three team leaders at the network of GP practices. She said: “My employers wanted to upskill and invest in the reception management team, so they contacted City College Plymouth. “I always thought apprenticeships were just for young people but after meeting our assessor - who was absolutely amazing - I was sold. “It was quite overwhelming in the beginning, being faced with all the modules and tasks, but you can see yourself ticking them as you go and your attitude changes from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I am doing this’ - I really enjoyed learning again!” Charlotte completed a Level 3 Management Apprenticeship studying functional skills in maths and IT alongside her course. She had been working in healthcare for 15 years and was a key part of developing Beacon’s reception management team - a demanding role working across the group’s busy GP surgeries serving 43,000 patients in the Plymouth area. Charlotte was one of the 38% of those studying for Apprenticeships in 2017/18 aged 25 or over and an example of the value of ‘adult apprenticeships’. She said: “My lecturers made the maths relevant to my everyday life, the examples they gave were calculations I used day-to-day. In the lead-up to our exams my lecturer organised extra sessions to make us all feel more confident - I was so ecstatic when I found out I had passed. “I can’t thank Beacon enough for giving me the opportunity. I’m already seeing the benefits - just eight months after completing my apprenticeship I was promoted to operations support manager. I was able to refer to my new knowledge and skills in my interview.” Charlotte is now planning to start a Level 5 management apprenticeship and has been promoting apprenticeships to her new team. “I want to encourage older people to consider this pathway as a way to help them grow and develop in their careers,” she added. Zoe Trevascus, HR and training manager for Beacon Medical Group, said: “A pivotal part of any GP team is receptionists and the team needed strong, dynamic confident team leads who were able to support and develop the service. “We looked for an appropriate training qualification that fitted in around their daily role and City College Plymouth provided us with an apprenticeship framework that enabled Charlotte to fly. “Not only has she developed her own skills and confidence, she was ready to apply for and step into a newly created management role just as we needed her.” To discover how the college can help support you or your organisation’s training needs, please contact the college’s Business Engagement Team on 01752 305026 or e-mail employers@cityplym.ac.uk.

Councillor’s Corner with Rebecca Smith

Happy New Year! I hope you and those around you had a great Christmas and that your year has started well. One of the last things I did before taking a break for Christmas was to go bowling with a bunch of amazing young people who are fostered by carers across the city. Can’t say I won - one in particular wiped the floor with us all! But it was a great evening and an opportunity for me and a few of my colleagues to hang out with the young people we get to work with as part of a small committee responsible for listening to foster carers and our Looked After Children. Making sure we give children in care the best possible homes and future is something I’m really passionate about. My parents were foster carers for a while after my siblings and me left home and it was always good to be part of looking after the children they had in their home when I came home for holidays. Playing even a small part in the care system as a City Councillor is just a small way for me to stay involved with this really important group of children and young people. As 2019 kicks off, I’m particularly looking forward to getting under the surface of some of our key services in the city such as housing, the welfare system and spending more time with some of the organisations who look after the most vulnerable in the city. I’ll be spending some time with organisations such as Shelter, the Department of Work and Pensions, and Shekinah. I know these visits and others like them will give me even more knowledge of the challenges faced by some residents of Plymstock Radford which I represent and across all parts of Plymouth. My hope is that this knowledge will empower me to speak up for those less fortunate than me as a Councillor. As ever, if you’re a Plymstock Radford resident, do let me know if there is anything I can help with. I’m contactable on rebecca.smith@plymouth.gov.uk and on Facebook @CllrRebeccaSmith. I’ve also just set up an Instagram Account @plymouthrebecca if you’re interested! Meanwhile, wearing my hat as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, I am delighted that Plymouth is to receive over £1 million to tackle potholes in the city. The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, announced at the Budget that a £420 million fund will be created to tackle potholes and other roadworks. Plymouth City Council will receive £1,031,000 to repair potholes, keep local bridges and structures open and safe, and help with other highways works that may be needed. I look forward to hearing which parts of the city are going to benefit from this additional funding once Plymouth City Council have made their decision. If you have issues in your neighbourhood you would like me to raise, do let me know by emailing me or calling 01752 674512.

GOD TV pulls out of Millennium Centre plan Christian broadcaster GOD TV has announced that it is not proceeding with plans to develop the former Millennium night club as a prayer centre.

The charity took out a lease on the building in 2013 with a view to developing it into a major centre. It had already spent large sums of money on refurbishing the interior of the building and estimated that it would require a further £5 million to complete the project. The 25-year lease on the building had an annual rent of £40,000, set to rise to £50,000, but it has now reached a settlement with the landlord and returned the building. Ward Simpson, who took over as GOD TV's chief executive officer in 2016 said: "It was a massive ongoing financial commitment. Every single pound raised for the Plymouth centre had already been spent on that project. And with each passing month, we were paying more on rent, insurance and other costs. "As a team we went through a very long investigation and sought advice. After a great deal of soul-searching the new Board of directors had to acknowledge that GOD TV is a Christian television network rather than a property developer. "We’re also called to be accountable – not least to those who have faithfully supported us. How could we justify raising and spending another £5 million? And would those costs have continued to rise? In all conscience, we concluded it would be poor stewardship to spend millions more on this building. "We had over-reached and needed to get back on track. For the past two years we have attempted to find a partner ministry who could come alongside us to help pay for, manage and use the building. We also tried putting the building on the market to see if we could find another buyer. Neither of these options produced any fruit. Each potential

Ward Simpson, CEO of God TV

party decided against it." He apologised to the people of Plymouth on behalf of GOD TV for the charity's inability to complete the project. "We had hoped to do something that would rejuvenate a marvellous old building in an historic district and be a boost to the city’s prosperity. "You can set out a journey in good faith, but if circumstances and priorities change, then your course has to change too. We simply could not justify spending more, or asking our supporters for more money. "We have learnt many lessons and made many changes at GOD TV. We’ve changed the way we work. We have a new Board and a new leadership team to give us wise counsel. We have taken stock of the way we work, reduced our expenses substantially and yet still increased our output. "We truly love Plymouth and again apologise for our inability to complete this project. In the meantime, however, Plymouth continues to be the base for our UK office

where many of our global functions are managed and GOD TV continues to be one of the largest broadcasters of Christian content in the world, reaching over 300 million homes across the globe. "We thank the people of Plymouth for your support and gracious understanding, and we thank God for you. This city will always have a special place in our hearts. It is a joy to be able to invest directly into the local economy through our operations as well as through our 50 plus local employees. "In our plans for the Millennium Centre we set out to do something good that we hoped would benefit Plymouth. Today we are delighted to see the exciting redevelopment plans taking shape for Union Street and hope the Millennium building might one day be a part of that. "We look forward to continuing to work with local churches and ministries here in Plymouth as well as promoting this wonderful city to our friends around the world."

Start date for Charles Cross works Works on the Charles Cross Transport Improvement Scheme will begin on February 4.

Charles Cross roundabout, with Charles Church at its centre, is one of the key junctions on Plymouth’s transport network and accommodates the majority of the city’s bus routes as well as high volumes of traffic. It is also well-used by pedestrians. The aim of the scheme is to reduce delays and improve traffic flow by creating more room for all vehicles whilst making crossings friendlier for pedestrians and cyclists. Infrastructure specialists Balfour Beatty have been appointed to carry out the works and will be working 12 hour days, six days a week, to reduce the overall time spent on the project. Lane restrictions will be removed during peak traffic flows where possible and night working will be carried out when necessary with consideration given to neighbouring residents. Works are expected to be finished by winter 2019. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet member for Strategic Infrastructure, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Balfour Beatty on board. They come with a reputation of professionalism and we look forward to working with them. “We know that there is never a good time to carry out a major road scheme, especially one as central as this. That’s why appointing a contractor with a proven track record of getting things done fits the bill.” James Wells, Balfour Beatty Project Manager, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract by Plymouth City Council, building on our expertise in successfully delivering transportation schemes across the UK. “We look forward to working closely with Plymouth City Council over the coming months to deliver significant benefits to the local community and the travelling public.”

So what’s actually happening at Charles Cross?

Planned improvements include an extra lane for traffic heading southbound on to the roundabout from Charles Street and a new layout for traffic and pedestrians designed to ease queuing on Exeter Street. This will include removing the existing separate bus priority signals from Exeter Street onto the roundabout, improving the flow for all traffic, but with additional bus priority on the roundabout itself. The road layout northbound on Charles Street will see the removal of the traffic island between the roundabout and the entrance to Drake Circus car park, to improve the flow for all traffic. The pedestrian crossings at the Drake Circus car park entrance are to be widened and straightened to provide a more direct link for people walking to The Box when it opens in 2020. Improvements to Hampton Street and the Ebrington Street junction will see the ageing subway filled in to make more space for the new lane from Charles Street, while improvements will be made to the existing surface level crossing on Hampton Street to compensate. Charles Church, in the centre of the roundabout, will remain unaffected; respected as a monument to citizens of Plymouth who lost their lives during the Second World War.

What does this mean for journeys?

Initial works will involve setting up the site compound. This will be on Hampton Street, outside of University of Plymouth’s Cookworthy Building, and will mean that Hampton Street will only be open northbound for the entirety of the works. Setup is expected to take around a week, after which there will be an off-peak lane closure on the south-bound side of Charles Street along with a suspension of the bus lane that leads from Exeter Street onto the roundabout.

The council will be giving residents constant updates on the rest of the traffic management plans as the scheme progresses through social media, through the dedicated Charles Cross webpage and also through the press.

What is being done to avoid delays?

The council will do all it can, but in reality the project is going to cause delays at some point during its construction. As the project goes on, the council will be reviewing traffic management daily to ensure that we’re not creating any more problems than is strictly necessary. The safety of the workforce, road users and pedestrians will be the driving decision maker. The council has been working with partners and people who use the roundabout daily, as Richard Stevens, managing director of CityBus explained: “We have been working with the council on this project right from the start and have had an input into how the scheme will be constructed to ensure that our services run as smoothly as they can. “Are roadworks ideal for us? No, of course not. But we accept that this will be shortterm pain for long-term gain and that the finished scheme will make the roundabout far easier to navigate for all of our vehicles.” Coun Coker added: “The council’s message at this stage is simple. Plan your journey. Think about how you get to the city centre. Could you car share? Park and ride? Use the bus? Maybe even take up cycling? Even if you can’t do any of those things, just slightly changing the times at which you travel could make a big difference to you. “The fact is that this project is essential, not only to effectively deal with the current amount of vehicles that use it, but also for the future growth of Plymouth. If it wasn’t worth doing, then we wouldn’t do it.” More information on the scheme and on different ways to get around can be found here – www.plymouth.gov.uk/charlescross

Surprise presentation for Sophie Sophie Haygarth had a surprise when she turned up for school at Plympton St Mary Infants shortly before Christmas when she was presented with a special award by Plympton's Stannator Natalie Harrison.

In common with Plympton's 10 other primary and secondary schools, Plympton St Mary Infants was donated a trophy by the Stannator to present to one of their pupils. Stannator Harrison wanted to mark the Centenary of the ending of World War 1 by donating a trophy to each of Plympton's schools to be presented annually to one of their pupils. The trophy is engraved 'Lest we forget' and aims to remind the children of this important time in history. Natalie was keen that the trophy be presented for bravery, going beyond or for caring acts, rather than for academic achievement or sporting prowess. Suzie Ottewell, headteacher at St. Mary Infants, chose Sophie Haygarth in Year 2 to be the inaugural recipient of the trophy. In January 2018 Sophie was admitted to hospital following a seizure and it was subsequently discovered that the seizures were being caused by a brain tumour. Sophie was admitted to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children where she underwent an operation to remove the tumour. The operation was a success and Sophie began the process of rehabilitation, returning to school later in the year. The operation has however left Sophie with some residual mobility issues. She has had to teach herself skills again such as walking and writing and can get very tired from the effort of doing things which she used to do without a second thought. Throughout all of this Sophie has always had a smile on her race and bravely faced the changes in her life without complaint. Sophie's parents and grandparents were invited to a special ceremony at the school on the day of the presentation and many of the school's families also came along. Sophie had not been told about the award beforehand and was delighted to receive it. Mrs Ottewell said: "The school could not think of a more worthy recipient for the trophy and we are proud of all Sophie has overcome and the way that she consistently demonstrates such resilience." £1,000 donation for Multiple Sclerosis Society Experience THE

Plymstock Broadway shopping centre and Property Maintenance South West (PMSW) have presented a cheque for £1,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS Society). The generous donation was raised through support from local market stall holders who were trading on the day of the annual Christmas Lights Switch On as well as from sponsorship of The Broadway Christmas Tree from local businesses, which was organised by Paul Sheldon from PMSW. Paul said: “I’m delighted that we have raised this amount for such a good charity.” Broadway centre manager Mark Berry said, “We are delighted to be able to donate this cheque as a result of the tremendous effort with the local market stalls all donating on the night and Paul arranging sponsorship from local businesses to be placed around the Christmas Tree.” Helen Cherry, MS Society group co-ordinator for the Plymouth and Tamar Valley area added: “The generous donation from The Broadway and Property Maintenance South West will make a massive difference to local people living with MS. As a Society we arrange a number of monthly socials and events which are either free or subsidised to enable individuals living with MS and their families to enjoy throughout the year. It is because of the support of businesses like Paul’s and The Broadway that we can continue to reach more people in our area.”

I recently watched a documentary about the life of world champion surfer Andy Irons. The documentary, called ‘Kissed By God’, was a shockingly honest look at the troubled life and subsequent untimely death of one of the best surfers in history.

No pain, no gain! By Dave Simpson Station Manager Cross Rhythms, Plymouth

What struck me most powerfully in the film was how Kelly Slater described what it was like to lose year after year to his foe. As you might expect he told of the pain he felt having his title taken from him and, despite giving it his all, not being able to win it back for three years. One particularly key aspect He said something of his life was his fierce which has stayed with me, rivalry with fellow world ‘winning is great but it is champion Kelly Slater. when you are losing that At the time of Andy Iron’s the good stuff inside really rise to the top, Kelly had won happens’. multiple world titles and was I can’t help but feel being touted as the greatest there is much wisdom in surfer of all time. Needless this statement. At times to say he wasn’t used to in life when things are losing. However in 2002, 2003 going wrong, we are facing and 2004 he would have to difficulties and it feels Dave Simpson taste defeat every single year like we’re losing, we often as Andy went on to become a consider things more 3 x world champion. deeply and learn the most about who we In a separate film, ‘A fly in the champagne’ really are inside. filmed in 2009, these two arch enemies When things don’t work out in the timing talked openly about their rivalry and shared we want we can learn patience. When we about the joys of beating the other as well as experience financial hardship we can learn the pain of defeat. to value the things that we have and when

we face the death of a loved one it can help us to treasure the moments we spend with those we’re closest to. You often hear stories of people being made redundant but coming out the other side doing something completely different but much more fulfilling. To highlight the point, Kelly Slater himself went on from those tough times of losing year on year to find great success once more and win the world title a further five times! There is a passage in the good book that says: ‘Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colours. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.’ Considering tough times a gift might be a step too far for you at the moment but difficulties really do have the capacity to transform us in a profound way. Not only that but it is my firm belief through personal experience that God wants to be with us in every season of life and is able to work all things out for good.

Plymstock Tapestry project: call for more helpers

Organisers of the Plymstock Tapestry Project are seeking more local people to get involved in the production of a colourful and impressive tapestry, which when completed, will be located in Plymstock library. The tapestry will represent the history of the area from the time of the woolly mammoth through to the Romans, Saxons, Normans Elizabethans and on to modern times. Local

historians and designers have been working on this project over the past year and are now seeking embroiderers and people interested in creating this pictorial image to contact them. The skills required are an ability to use a needle and to enjoy the opportunity of sharing in the creation of something that will last for many years into the future. The organisers are not expecting it to be as famous as the Bayeaux tapestry but

it would be nice to think it will last 1000 years! Strictly speaking it is not a tapestry but a series of embroidered panels incorporating applique designs and covering a large wall in the library. The overall impact will be impressive and will no doubt be helpful to school children in their studies and also informing local people about the rich history of the area. Brian Steele, one of the organisers from Plymstock Forum, said that they

Dealing with probate The death of a loved one is a very upsetting and difficult experience, however, the amount of paperwork required to deal with your loved one’s estate can often be too much. In many instances, it may be that a grant of probate will not be required to release monies. However, even if the institutions (eg., banks etc) will pay out monies without a grant of probate, if the assets exceed £5,000 (including half of joint assets), then a grant should be obtained. If you have been left with the responsibility of dealing with a loved one’s estate, whether through a Will or the Laws of Intestacy, the role of personal representative/executor is an

important one and should not be undertaken lightly. It may also be that the estate exceeds the tax threshold (£325,000 for a single person) and will therefore require inheritance tax to be paid before a grant of probate can be obtained. According to the Revenue, £5.228 billion was collected in inheritance tax during the 2017/2018 tax year (8% more than previously). This shows that more and more estates are becoming taxable and this places more of a burden on your family when dealing with the administration of an estate, as they may also be left with a tax bill to settle. Executors have various legal duties and responsibilities to

ensure that the estate is dealt with correctly eg., completing the tax forms (inheritance and/or income tax), paying debts and placing money into trust. They also have a personal liability if they fail to deal with the estate correctly and can find themselves in the unfortunate position of having to pay debts or claims by beneficiaries if they fail in this duty. Statutory Notices should be put in place by executors (these are not the family death notices) to protect themselves as without them creditors can pursue executors for up to six years. An executor must also ensure that beneficiaries are not bankrupt by carrying out the relevant searches. They also have a duty to use an appropriate degree of care and skill which

includes ensuring that assets are distributed in a timely manner as well as making sure that assets are secure. With all this in mind, I would suggest that anyone that has been appointed as an executor always seeks legal advice to ensure that they do not end up out of pocket. Your country linedance club needs YOU! Tamar Valley Westerners Country Club will hold its last night on January.

It has been running for 36 years giving great evenings of entertainment, but don't despair. There will be a new club starting called the Tamar Valley Country Linedancing club. There will be a lot of the same acts as well as some new ones. Linedancers are very welcome to join the club as well as partner dancers and other types of dancing. The new club will be starting on the January 27th and thereafter, on the last Sunday in the month so make sure you don’t miss the next classes on February 24th and March 31st. It’s hoped that with new members the club can increase to fortnightly in the

near future. The club runs from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. For the first night, a very talented and great entertainer on the country and linedance scene; Chris Kenward will be joining in the fun. If you have seen him before I'm sure you will agree, he will give you a great evening of music so there will be lots of dancing. This is a really friendly club with a great atmosphere, not to mention a lovely wood floor which makes dancing lots of fun. The room is a good size with seating at the back and down the sides, with an ample stage for the acts. There will also be well known country artists every month to give you great evenings of entertainment to dance to, or if

you prefer, just sit and relax and enjoy the fantastic music. The aim of the club is to make linedancers welcome alongside live acts; something the social club boasts as the only one in the area to do so. Linedancing often gets overlooked as a good social event. Not only is it a fantastic way to meet people and keep fit, the dances have also changed over the year, now involving all sorts of dances ranging from the waltz to the tango to the cha cha cha. Linedancing is a simple style, one that doesn’t require a partner, and allows you to dance to a much wider variety of music. If you’ve never danced before, feel free to come

along, enjoy the music and throw yourself into the pleasure of dancing. There is also a local teacher of line dancing should you want to improve your skills. Dressing up for the occasion is optional; come in whatever feels comfortable to you to dance in. Our monthly club nights are held at Hyde Park Social Club in Hyde Park behind the Main Street on the lower floor, there is a stair entrance or a back entrance which is flat. Entrance is £7 for a brilliant evening of entertainment, with drinks available to be purchased at the bar as well as a raffle on the night. For more details contact Yvonne 07885254042

Local business to expand - and this time it’s personal

Two female entrepreneurs with a successful business in Plympton are setting their sights on working with more companies from across the UK.

HB Print & Promotions specialises in providing tailored and personalised workwear alongside other personalised gifts and merchandise. After moving to new premises in Match Mill Business Park, company directors Carys Pillay and Faye Wakeham have launched a new website to reach more customers from further afield as well as improve things for local businesses. Faye said: “Some of the customers we’ve had for years don’t realise all the products we can offer – there are now so many it can be hard to see. The website makes this easier, and also means we can work with companies across the UK who can’t see us in person.” HB Print & Promotions runs alongside the successful tailoring and alterations business Hemming Birds, both physically and on paper. Carys and Faye have grown their businesses from working from their bedrooms to the double unit they now occupy. Carys said: “As the two businesses are side by side, we’ve got the facilities to alter,

amend and brand company clothing all in one place. We can personalise lots of products, which saves businesses money in the long run – we find that if someone is given something with their name on it, they will take more care of it and it will last longer.” While Faye and Carys know it’s a competitive market, their comprehensive offering alongside their reputation for good customer service puts them a step ahead. They’ve already worked with a range of organisations including LTC, Gym Bubbas, the Royal Navy, local schools and Clever Lets, who printed individual room name plaques for each of the hundreds of students who used their accommodation. Carys said: “Hemming Birds is well known in Plymouth, we’re the go to place for bridal alterations. We want HB Print & Promotions to be the go to place for workwear and promotional merchandise in the city and beyond.” Anyone wishing to discuss their business or organisation’s requirements can contact HB Print & Promotions on 01752 343462 or visit their website http://www. hbprintandpromotions.com

Walking for wellbeing with Active For All

When it comes to improving someone’s life, the Active For All service has done wonders for Lucy Hay.

Plymothian Lucy was struggling with mental health problems just two years ago when her support worker encouraged her to try Active For All’s Walking Group. “I stayed in a lot, was shy, unconfident and had anxiety about meeting people,” said Lucy. “My mental health was not good and along with depression I had paranoid thoughts. I also have Aspergers.” All this meant that Lucy was stuck in a trap, feeling incapable of going out to do the kinds of activities that would help alleviate some of the effects of her problems. She made the crucial first step with the help of her support worker, and started to go along on the waterfront walks organised by the Walking Group. Although she was welcomed, she found the first few walks were a challenge as it took a while to overcome her shyness. The walking helped to boost her wellbeing and confidence, and soon she was enjoying

herself a lot more. “The walks benefit people in a number of ways,” said Larissa Milden, manager of Active For All. “The physical activity, especially on the brisk walks, gets all the right

hormones and endorphins flowing to give an emotional boost. Then there’s the social aspect; people naturally start to chat when they walk and find it easier than just sitting in a room or other social setting.” It worked for Lucy – after a while, the walk

leaders saw such an improvement in her wellbeing that they suggested she become a volunteer, helping others to make the same improvements in their quality of life. She readily accepted, and over the next few months she went on courses and eventually became an accredited Walk Leader. As well as finding confidence socially, Lucy has overcome anxieties about using public transport. “I have a brilliant support worker from ‘Steps’, Karen, who has helped me so much with that,” she said. “I’m now getting out and about more, using buses to get around to places I could not go. “I love helping people,” she said, “I know that if you keep going and don’t give up, things can get better. Even if you go back a step or two, just keep going, there’s always hope if you keep trying.” Lucy’s positive attitude is infectious, she has a ready grin and an outlook on life that is an encouragement to newcomers to the Walking Group. She leads some of the three walks a week, ranging from gentle (which is accessible for wheelchair users, too), through moderate to the brisk walks. Active for All’s aim is to support people with disabilities and long term health conditions to get active. Their local community activities are open for everyone aged 18+, and include boccia (like seated bowling), football and walking – all geared towards helping people to have fun, improve health, meet new people and find something to do regularly and enjoy. Taster sessions are arranged with instructors in a range of other physical activities, and there’s also a Buddying Service if you feel you need to build your confidence when trying out something new – it’s sometimes easier if you can take someone friendly with you to begin with. Active For All is provided by Improving Lives Plymouth, the Plymouth charity that helps over 17,000 people every year with a range of health and wellbeing services, as well as volunteering opportunities and advice about money and benefits. Prayer Group Tuesdays 9.30am-10.30am (In the Lounge). In all the hustle and bustle of life these days, people struggle to cope, but look to fill that gap in their lives where something is missing. That gap can be filled with the loving family of God in a local church. Giving up a bit of time for regular prayer, together with others, can help you cope with the stresses and worry that life throws at you. We provide a non-judgemental circle of friendship and welcome everyone, regardless of background, luggage and history, to come and seek our friendship. We open our doors every week, for anybody and everybody to walk in freely and pray with us. Every word spoken is treated with the upmost confidence and privacy, along with unconditional friendship. Come along and pray with us - life is easier to cope with among friends. You can come in and out as you need and should you need to stay longer or talk to anyone at the end, you will not be turned away. If the doors are locked, knock on the window (room on right-hand end of the church). You do not need to attend any church to come and pray with us. A group of Plymouth children got the chance to put their MPs in the hot seat.

The special event at the Council House saw more than 100 children and young people from the Military Kids Club (MKC) Heroes asking Plymouth’s three MPs Sir Gary Streeter, Luke Pollard and Johnny Mercer questions linked to their military family lives. Topics discussed included the impact of Brexit on the Armed Forces, military children having to change schools and the quality of accommodation for service people. The event was organised and chaired by the MKC Heroes Ambassadors’ group of secondary students and included students from 34 schools in the Plymouth area. Madison Watkins, one of the chairpeople for the session said: “This was a great opportunity for MKC Heroes to talk with our MPs about what matters to us. We are pleased they are working together to help service and veterans’ children.” MKC Heroes is a national support group for the children of service men and women and their relatives and is supported by The Royal British Legion and Plymouth City Council. It brings together members of service families from all over the country, who are friends for each other, especially in times of need.

Plymouth Council supported the development of a local cluster, which now has 160 schools nationwide. MKC Heroes are members of Plymouth Armed Forces Covenant and Plymouth City Youth Council. Susanne Archard, area manager for The Royal British Legion in Devon and Cornwall, said: “The children and young people from MKC Heroes do a really important job as young advocates for service families. “Most importantly, they are friends for each other and can provide advice for some of the different challenges these young people face such as having to move home and change schools, whilst often having a parent away. We are grateful for the work of Plymouth City Council who kick-started and help build the group from scratch.” Sir Gary Streeter, MP for South West Devon, said: “It was great to listen to some very penetrative questions from the Club members, who raised some very relevant issues, such as the issue of changing schools frequently. Chronicle February 2019

New year, new you, new skills At the start of a New Year many people set goals to achieve over the next 365 days and most will be broken, but adult eduction offers something adults can stick to.

In the spirit of ‘new year, new you’ an increasing number of adults decide to learn a new skill and improve their career prospects. Returning to education as an adult can seem daunting. With bills to pay, children to look after and jobs to uphold, retraining or gaining a new qualification can seem like a pipe dream. From access courses and apprenticeships, to gold-rated foundation and full honours degrees, the South West’s top performing college can offer something for everyone. City College Plymouth offers a range of part-time and evening courses to fit around work and home life, with funding available so you can study without breaking the bank. It is easier than you think to return to education! Three local adult learners talked about their experiences of returning to education. Nicola Hague, 39, from Hooe, runs her own beauty and face painting business and wanted to perfect her skills. The military mum found City College Plymouth offered a course in Make-up Artistry that would fit around her busy home life and meant she

could continue working. Nicola said: “Everyone at the college is very understanding especially of family life. I’m a mature student with a husband in the services and a 12-year-old son, so making sure my studies fit around my home life was very important to me. Having the option to study part-time has allowed me to put my family first and still have time to do something I love. “Having access to funding has meant I don’t have to worry about money and what I do earn can go straight to supporting my family. “This course has opened my eyes to a whole range of career opportunities and allowed me to make a lot of connections within the industry.” Chelsey Fairnington, 26, from Whitleigh, has suffered from health issues since a young age, which affects her ability to study and work for long hours. Having the option to study part-time at City College Plymouth meant Chelsey has been able to return to education and take the first step towards a successful career in the catering industry. She chose a Level 3 Certificate in Patisserie and Confectionery. “As an adult learner I was apprehensive about returning to education but I know there is help available whenever I need it. I have felt supported right from the application process to being here and

attending classes," said Chelsey. “The different funding options have made doing my course possible, and I know without the Advanced Learner Loan I would not have been able to afford the course fees. “The skills and techniques I have learnt will help me to gain part-time employment or jump start my own business. I’m really excited to get out in to the culinary world.” Claudia Danaila, 35, from Devonport, was a stay at home mum looking to start a new job. With a passion for baking, she decided to turn her hobby into a career. City College Plymouth offered her the perfect pathway to return to education with a Level 3 Certificate in General Patisserie and Confectionery Claudia said: “There is so much support available at the college. The lecturers are there to help you every step of the way and the Advanced Learner Loan has made it possible for me to return to education. Being able to access funding has meant I haven’t had to worry about money and I can just enjoy learning. “Since becoming a mother I have dedicated my time to staying at home and looking after my child, and studying part-time has meant I can fit my studies around my home life. I didn’t know it was possible to do it all, but I can gain a qualification, be a mum and work. Studying at the College has been a real turning point.”
