City’s treasure collection is boosted by Medieval gold ring from Wembury

A beautiful Medieval ring, officially classed as Treasure, has been acquired for the city’s permanent collections.

The gold finger ring set with a sapphire dates from around AD 1100-1500 and most probably belonged to a high ranking member of the clergy.

It was discovered in the parish of Wembury in 2014 by metal detectorist, Robin Barker and recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

The ring has now been added to Plymouth Museums Galleries Archives’ archaeology collections. It was purchased with help from The Headley Trust, the V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

Sapphires are traditionally associated with sincerity and faithfulness and were also a symbol of chastity during Medieval times. High status finds made from precious metal that date from this period are extremely rare within the local area. Members of the clergy were vowed to a life of celibacy so it’s likely they may have worn a ring like this.

High ranking clergy would have also believed that by displaying the wealth of the church in this way they were praising God. At least a dozen sapphire rings have been found in the graves of Medieval bishops. From AD 1121-1539 the lands around Wembury were occupied

by Plympton Priory, probably the wealthiest monastic house in Devon.

As a result, members of the clergy, including those of high rank, would have been in the area around Plymouth in Medieval times. Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader said: “We’re really pleased to be able to add this important item to the city’s collections and very grateful to those who have supported our acquisition of it.

“It’s a really interesting object which, as well as being beautiful and valuable, also tells us something about the religious history of the region.”

Charity football match and fun day planned

Devon Football Association referee Brian Johnston is organising a charity football match and fun day to take place at Plymstock School on July 8 between 12pm and 4pm.

Raising money for the Neo Natal Special Care Baby unit at Derriford and Cancer Research, the event will also include the chance to watch the match between the Referees and the Royal Navy Veterans.

There will also be a table top sale, held in the gym of the school. People are encouraged to book a table, for only £5, to sell their wares, similar to that of a car boot sale. There will also be stalls, raffles, a tombola and a bouncy castle.

Plymstock pre-school leads the way in securing Millie’s Mark All Aboard Pre-School in Hooe has become the first in Plymouth to secure Millie’s Mark.

The National Day Nurseries Association and Millie’s parents developed the award after a beautiful little girl named Millie Thompson sadly died in a nursery setting. She died after choking on food at a nursery in 2012 when she was just nine months old.

Her death could have been prevented if her nursery had the same paediatric first aid measures in place now needed to be awarded Millie’s Mark. Millie’s legacy will be to keep this from happening to any other child.

Millie’s parents, Dan and Joanne Thompson, founded Millie’s Trust and have successfully campaigned for changes to first aid requirements for childcare providers.

“Millie’s Mark is our gorgeous daughter’s legacy, and to see the development of a voluntary scheme mark introduced into nurseries is an achievement not just for us, but for parents everywhere.

“We put our children into the hands of childcarers and we expect they will be cared for in the best possible way. A setting achieving Millie’s Mark is an exceptional achievement for not only the nursery but for the children and the parents too.”

Talking about their recent award, All Aboard Pre-School managing director, Claire Hall said: “We’re delighted to be the first preschool in Plymouth to secure Millie’s Mark. It’s a credit to my wonderful team and how much we care about the children.

“Millie’s Mark is a recognition of excellence in first aid and commitment to training staff to paediatric first aid. To be awarded Millie’s Mark, we have had to demonstrate that we go above and beyond to keep children happy and healthy.

“That’s why this means so much to us. This is why we had the pink and purple giraffe mascot - a larger than life version of Millie’s favourite toy - at our celebration tea! We’d love to help more preschools and nurseries in Plymouth to secure Millie’s Mark.”

Councillor Rebecca Smith, newly elected Ward Councillor for Plymstock Radford said: “Congratulations to Claire and the whole team at All Aboard Preschool in obtaining Millie’s Mark. It’s a fantastic achievement which highlights their commitment to both excellent paediatric first aid and to ensuring the preschool is the best if can be.

“It was lovely for Cllr Mike Leaves and me to be able to celebrate with them and present them their Millie’s Mark plaque on a recent

visit and to meet the staff and colleagues from Hooe Primary Academy and Plymouth City Council who have been involved.

Jake Daykin, headteacher of neighbouring Hooe Primary Academy, said: “This is a fantastic achievement. Well done to Claire and her team at All Aboard.”

Parents know that preschool and nursery is about education, fun and building relationships but it is also about having the peace of mind to leave your child with people every day.

Claire added: “Above all else, parents need to feel their children are in safe hands.

200 settings across the country have now been awarded Millie’s Mark. If your child’s hasn’t, don’t be afraid to ask why not. Every preschool should be working towards Millie’s Mark. It’s about saving lives.”

Plympton woman starts her dream career A newly qualified hairdresser and barber from Plympton has started her dream career by taking up a position at a local salon in the town.

Lisa Newton is the newest member of staff at the Wow Hair and Beauty Salon in Seymour Road opposite Hele’s School.

Lisa, who lives in Plympton, was educated at Notre Dame in Plymouth before studying Level 2 hairdressing and Level 2 barbering.

After gaining her Level 2’s she went on to study Level 3 in both hairdressing and barbering which she successfully completed earlier this month and a day later she joined Wow Hair and Beauty.

Lisa said: “My cousin used to work for Achievement Training and she had always encouraged me to go into hair and beauty because it was something I was always naturally interested in and seemed to have a knack for.”

Lisa identified that a lot more attention is paid to male grooming nowadays and this is one of the reasons she choose to add barbering to her qualifications.

“Men are getting a lot more into their looks these days, so it’s something I’m really passionate about and really enjoy doing,” said Lisa.

Her training has included hair tattoos which involves shaving patterns into the hair during cuts, but she is equally at

home doing basic cuts and shaves as well as ladies styling and hair treatments.

Lisa is now looking forward to acquiring new clients and has a number of opening offers until the end of July. These include a 20% discount on the salon’s already competitive prices for hair treatments, 10% off for students and reduced prices for senior citizens on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Other offers include a ‘two for £15’ for father and son cuts or two boys such as brothers coming in together.

Asked about what particularly attracted her to take up a position at Wow Hair and Beauty Lisa indicated that the cleanliness of the salon, friendliness of existing staff and the salon’s focus on customer care, especially with elderly clients, were determining factors.

With this year’s school leavers about to finish their exams Lisa said she recommends hairdressing as a career for those who have a passion for it. “It’s not just for girls, it’s for boys as well. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, especially if they feel it’s something they’re interested in. You don’t feel like you’re working when you’re enjoying your job,” she added.

Marmoset Marvin is new mate for Marmalade Family attraction, Dartmoor Zoo, has announced the arrival of its newest resident, a six-year old male common marmoset who arrived from Borth Wild Animal Kingdom last month to become Marmalade the marmoset’s new partner.

The boisterous marmoset, named Marvin

by Dartmoor Zoo fans in a public poll, has settled in well with Marmalade, a two-year old female common marmoset who was left searching for a new friend after her previous companions passed away.

Marmalade and her new beau have already become well acquainted and can be seen frolicking in the high tree branches of their enclosure, delighting visitors with their playful antics. The Zoo hopes that the love affair continues to blossom, and leads to a new breeding programme.

Announcing the new arrival, Dartmoor Zoo founder and CEO of the charity, Benjamin Mee, said: “Common marmosets are fascinating and entertaining creatures. We’re thrilled that the new male has bonded so well with Marmalade, as social interaction is essential to the marmosets’ wellbeing.

“He spent his first month at Dartmoor Zoo under close observation in quarantine and has gradually been introduced to Marmalade.

Our keepers have done a fantastic job overseeing a smooth process and the two are fast becoming close companions.

“We called on animal lovers and monkey fans to help us decide on a name for our new Prince Charming and we received some brilliant names. He’s young, confident, and adventurous - not unlike a certain Royal who recently found his love match - and we were looking for the perfect name to suit his personality.

“Our keepers selected their favourite suggestions and Zoo fans have been voting furiously to choose the winning name. The pubic has spoken and their chosen name is Marvin, so he is our people’s primate!”

The common marmoset originates from Brazil and, although not currently endangered, their natural habit is fast being degraded by the human population.

They are also commonly traded as exotic pets. In the wild, the marmoset’s diet largely consists of tree saps and insects, while Marmalade and her new friend will enjoy a range of vegetables and ‘marmoset gum’ which substitutes tree sap.

The Marmosets at Dartmoor Zoo can be seen foraging for the gum which is placed by keepers in specially drilled logs to encourage natural behaviours.

The marmosets can be visited at Dartmoor Zoo 364 days a year, 10am - 6pm (British Summer), and 10am - 4pm (British Winter).

Saltash Chronicles Embroidery Project Saturdays until September A community project inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry bringing together more than 60 local residents to produce an embroidered history of Saltash. The 100 feet long embroidery includes more than 50 scenes from the town’s history. The embroidery can be seen at Saltash Baptist Church on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm

What’s That Noise?

June 16 - July 6 Soapbox Children’s Theatre. 11am and 1.30pm. There is a squeak and a tantalising toot, a crisp crash and a hilarious hoot. Where does it come from? What does it mean? A whispered word and a scrumptious scream!

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

A Magical Musical Journey June 23 Affinity Community Theatre (ACT), the community theatre group, present an afternoon of popular music and comedy at the William Sutton Memorial Hall at Shelley Way, St Budeaux at 2pm. Gin Festival Plymouth 2018 Jun 29 Plymouth Pavilions The UK’s first, biggest and best gin festival is making it’s first visit to Plymouth and there’s going to be enormous variety of different gins. Plymouth Armed Forces Day 2018 Jun 30 The Hoe Celebrate Plymouth’s proud military tradition at the annual Armed Forces Day, which this year will also be commemorating the RAF’s 100th anniversary. It will showcase the services with static and arena displays and parades. The exciting arena programme will return this year, with a highlight being the Field Gun competitions and the Parade of Standards will see cadets and veterans alike march across the Hoe Promenade. There will also be military vehicles, equipment and static helicopters on display to see up close as well as the opportunity to meet the Royal Navy, Army, Marines, RAF and veterans’ organisations in a variety of villages set out across the Hoe. Plymouth Model Show Jun 30 Plymouth Guildhall Come along to the annual scale model show. Two large displays will commemorate 100 years since WWI finished and also the centenary of the Royal Air Force. There will be static and radio control models, model railways and a variety of displays from South West model clubs and winner model clubs from Brittany. A model competition is also taking place during the day. The cafe sells hot and cold food and there will be a tombola running throughout the event.

British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Each year, six professional display firework companies are selected by a draw to take part, and despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997. In addition to the dazzling display of fireworks, there is entertainment on the Hoe including a fun fair with thrill rides, Heart FM providing live music and a number of catering facilities available to stave off any hunger during the show.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to Asthma UK and the National Autistic Society. Pick’n’Mix 2018 July 14 and 15 Plymouth Children’s Theatre present their summer show at The House Theatre, University of Plymouth.

The group is a growing children’s theatre company for three to 18 years old.

Down Memory Lane Jul 27 and 28 Down Thomas Singers present two evening concerts in aid of Brian Tumour Research at the Silver Jubilee Hall Down Thomas at 7.30pm. Dozens of new jobs will be created later this year as five new retail stores open at Marsh Mills.

Four of the outlets - along with KFC and Costa drive-throughs - will be at the new Plymouth Gateway Retail Park, which is being constructed on the site of the former Legacy International Hotel.

Planning permission was granted in 2013 for the hotel to be demolished and the site was acquired by Ediston Real Estate for £6.1m in February 2016.

Planning permission for 56,000 sq ft of retail space was secured in December 2016.

The park comprises the two drive-thru units of 1,800 sq ft and 4,000 sq ft and a terrace of four units ranging from 8,000 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft.

Retailers at the Plymouth Gateway Retail Park include kitchen retailer Wren, Mothercare, Sofology and carpet and floor retailer Tapi.

It is estimated the new development will create more than 100 jobs with Costa and KFC units providing 60 jobs alone.

Just yards from the new Plymouth Gateway Retail Park, construction of the new £10 million Next store is rapidly nearing completion. It is scheduled to open in the

autumn - ready for Christmas trading.

Plymouth’s got business talent A new report looking into the strengths of the current UK business landscape has discovered the emerging ‘capitals’ of British business - including Plymouth as a leader in digital enterprises.

The report, published by the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards, has highlighted the new business capitals that offer distinct advantages which help drive success and growth within specific specialist sectors. However, even outside of the five identified areas, there’s still good news right across the UK. Whilst London is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous financial hubs, Plymouth (digital), Birmingham (connectivity), Cardiff (talent), Leeds (affordability), and Brighton (start-ups) are the five main newly identified business capitals.

In 2017, Plymouth launched the STEM Plymouth Strategic Plan, which is designed to drive the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and establish itself as the South West’s leading city in the field.

Professor Kevin Jones, Chair of the STEM Forum, said: “Plymouth’s vision is to become a thriving, innovative international ocean city with science, technology, engineering and maths driving the region’s growth and productivity.”

One year on, more than a third of Plymouthbased respondents (35%) said that the city’s large number of digital businesses are driving growth in the area, and one in five (21%) said that an investment in digital skills such as coding is also a factor.

As well as the areas seeing the most business success, the report also found that two-thirds (66%) of senior business professionals find it easy to attract and retain talent, with larger businesses (701-1000 employees) finding it easiest (73%).

Further, HR (86%) and technology firms (80%) find talent retention the easiest. Businesses reported competitive salaries (47%), affordability (46%) and young people choosing to stay in the area after university (43%) as the best ways to keep top talent.

Plympton Stannator Andrew Hill who is nearing the end of his year in office has paid an official visit to the Plymouth Autism Hub along with his partner Charlotte Willis.

Plymouth Autism Hub is run as a free social club for people aged 16 or over with Autism. Their carers, enablers and friends are also welcome to go along. The project has been made possible by a grant from the People’s Health Trust which is an independent charity addressing health inequalities across Great Britain and uses money raised through the Health Lottery.

The Plymouth Autism Hub sessions take place at 69a New George Street in Plymouth City Centre on most Tuesday afternoons and on occasional Saturdays. More details are available at www.facebook.com/ PlymouthAutismHub

Mr Hill went on to explain the role of Stannator to those attending the hub and then answered a number of questions after which he and his partner then mingled more informally with those attending.

Trudie Binnie from the DWP was also present to offer advice to those who wanted it and to answer questions.

Steven Dodd who is a member of the Special Olympics in Plymouth and who was diagnosed with Aspergers’ Syndrome at the age of 24 also spoke at the meeting, giving details of a book called SuperOwl which he has produced in conjunction with local author Lester Jones.

The book is themed on ‘Being Different Makes You Super!’ The children’s book tells the story of a group of animals who became friends in the face of adversity. The characters are based on humans in Steven’s life.

A book signing was due to take place at the British Red Cross bookshop in Stephen’s Place as the Chronicle was going to press.

Stannator Hill said: “It was inspirational to hear just a brief bit about Steven’s life story, his quest to overcome barriers he has come across in life and to learn about the book he has been involved in producing.

“Another young man spoke passionately to me about a product he has been designing and Charlotte equally had informative discussions with those she engaged with. It is clear people on the autistic spectrum are frequently quite talented individuals and can have a lot to offer employers if those employers are prepared to have the vision to see beyond the label of autism and to tailor the role to the individual rather than vice versa,” the Stannator added.

During their time there they got to have a go at driving Sentinel, one of the engines used on the railway’s Brake Van runs.

Stannator Hill said: “Some years ago before the miniature railway at Dobwalls closed down, I did have a morning driving one of their miniature steam trains, but it was great to have a go at driving a full size engine at the Plym Valley Railway and also to hear about their plans to build a second platform at the Coypool end of their track.”

SUCCESS FOR ROTARY’S FIRST CLASSIC CAR SHOW People came from near and far to the picturesque Lyneham Estate on the outskirts of Plympton for a day of motoring nostalgia on June 3.

It was the setting for the Saltram Rotary Club’s first ever Classic Car Show, put on to help raise funds for the Devon Air Ambulance.

BSA, Austin, Morris, Leyland, Hillman and Sunbeam were just some of the bygone motoring brands which visitors were able to see close up, all having been lovingly cared for and in some cases restored by their owners.

There were also plenty of past models of existing brands such as Ford’s Capri, Citroen’s CX Callas D and various MG’s among many others exhibited for the enjoyment of the visiting public. Some vehicles displayed historic versions of the now defunct tax disc.

As well as cars there were vintage vans, campers, military vehicles and motor cycles to make up the compliment of vintage and classic motors on display.

A bright sunny day and the visually delightful backdrop of Lyneham House and its pond provided a suitably tranquil setting for this step back in time.

One car in particular at the show had significant local history - a black 1953 4 door Morris Minor. The current owner is only the third to have owned it. The vehicle was first sold in 1953 to a person in Laira by the Barton Motor Company which was situated on Mutley Plain. It was issued with the registration HJY 44 by the then Plymouth Vehicle Licensing Office which around the same time also issued HJY1 which currently appears on the Lord Mayor of Plymouth’s official car.

A design change a few years later smoothed off the curves for subsequent models enabling a larger single windscreen to be fitted.The exhibited Morris Minor still has working trafficators - indicators on stalks which pop out from the B post between the side doors to signal an intention to turn left or right. The first owner later sold the car to a motorist in Plympton before it was subsequently transferred to its current owner in 1979.

The vehicle underwent a significant restoration in 2001 when the car was stripped to its shell, sandblasted and then repainted and reassembled to produce the fine specimen which was on show to be appreciated by visiting enthusiasts of historic motors on June 3.

Wreck-it-Rex is in need of fixing

Gables Farm Dogs & Cats Home has recently taken in an 11 year old Chocolate Labrador named Rex. He was given up by his owners as he was not getting on with a younger dog in the home and has on-going health issues they could not afford to treat.

Being an older gentleman Rex has very stiff joints and will need an x-ray of his pelvis and lower spine. A heart murmur has been detected so he will also need a heart scan. He has two large masses on his side and a serious tumour on his anus, which will continue to grow if not removed quickly. As if this wasn’t enough for the poor old boy, he has also started chewing his back end due to it being so itchy and painful, which has now become very sore and inflamed.

It is estimated that it will cost the Home around £800 for all the treatment, drugs, surgery and all of his after care. After going through all this he will then need to find a new home where he can live the rest of his days happy and pain free.

Deputy manager Ruth Rickard said: “You have to feel for all the poor old animals that find themselves in need of new homes in the later stages of their lives. There are so many unwanted animals out there and the older ones are always overlooked as they might not be as cute or may only have a few years left.”

Medical Mavericks at City College STEM Hub A group of Year 9 students from Hele’s School in Plympton with an interest in careers in the healthcare sector visited City College’s STEM Hub recently.

The event was offered to six Plymouth secondary schools and this is the second year that Hele’s School have taken part. Once again, the day provided the students with an array of interactive activities, where they could try out equipment used by medical professionals and speak to the team from Medical Mavericks about their experiences of careers in the healthcare sector.

The students took part in many activities, which included practising taking blood from ‘Andy the Arm’ and learning how to intubate ‘Eddy the Head’.

They turned their hand to the skills used by surgeons carrying out key hole surgery procedures by taking on the elastic band challenge; students had to attempt to tie elastic bands into a knot.

One of the most popular activities was the reaction time game. The students’ competitive edge shone through, as the six schools involved in the event pitched against each other.

The students all found the day to be fun and informative, with one of them commenting: “I was able to try things I have never done before and get a better understanding of what I could do in the future”.

The facilities at the STEM Hub in City College are impressive and students were lucky to have had the opportunity to use the specialist equipment which gave students a real hands-on experience.

Plympton chippy serves 1,600 portions to Londoners on National Fish & Chip Day Lucky Londoners enjoyed a taste of Devon’s finest as Kingfisher Fish & Chips handed out an impressive 200 free portions of fish and chips an hour in the capital to celebrate National Fish & Chip Day 2018.

Owners of the Chaddlewood chippy, Craig Maw and Nikki Mutton, were once again called upon to be ambassadors for the national awareness day in June. Starting at 8am, they served almost 1,600 portions of MSC certified Norwegian cod

and chips from their Kingfisher On the Go Catering van outside Trinity House, in Trinity Square, the headquarters for the seafarers’ charity, Fishermen’s Mission. Queues were solid for several hours as the waft of the iconic British dish attracted office workers, tourists, families, workmen and even a passing troupe of Morris dancers.

Customers were invited to make a donation to the Fishermen’s Mission and raised over £600.

Celebrations were also taking place in the shop

in Plympton where staff handed out vouchers for free fish and chips to 12 lucky randomly selected customers.

Commenting on the day, Craig said: “What an amazing day! We’ve always known that everybody loves fish and chips and the crowds we drew certainly proved that. It was fantastic to see people from all walks of life queuing up to get a taste of the nation’s favourite takeaway. While we were flying the flag in London, celebrations were

taking place in thousands of chippies across the UK including our shop back home in Plympton.

National Fish & Chip Day is about giving fish and chips the recognition it deserves and helping to secure its position as the nation’s favourite dish. The national event takes place on the first Friday in June every year and is championed by the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA), who represent packers and distributors of oils and fats in the UK.

SMART MOVE FOR PLYM VALLEY RAILWAY

Members of the St Mary’s Area Residents Team (SMART) have handed over a cheque for £400 to the Plym Valley Railway.

The railway is SMART’s adopted cause for the year and among the group’s fundraising activities they ran the Harewood House Coffee Bar for the four days after the recent Mayday Bank Holiday.

SMART meets monthly and are a residents forum for those living in the PL7 postcode area. Local councillors attend the group’s meetings and discussions can take place on a variety of topics.

Recently they discussed the issue of equipment in the St Mary’s play park and the loss of a lollipop patrol in Market Road.

Previously the group raised funds to place three benches in St Mary’s Park and also lobbied for a youth shelter to be installed there.

Following their recent cheque presentation to the Plym Valley Railway some of their members tried out one of the brake van rides.

Plym Valley Railway chairman Eric Lobb told the group: “We are very grateful. It (the donation) will be very, very useful. It is always very difficult for the railway to come by funds and we very much appreciate it.”

All set for a cracking family day out at Plymstock Festival

Plymstock Festival is returning in September.

The popular event takes place on September 1 in Down Horn Park and Plymstock Community Centre.

The event starts at 12 noon and runs until 4.30pm. As in previous years the event will feature many stalls and some great entertainment for the

whole family with music and dancing and children’s entertainers. The popular fun dog show run by Gables Farm Dogs & Cats Home will also return.

The Festival provides opportunities for local organisations to showcase their activities and raise funds for their clubs. A local personality will declare the Festival open at 12 noon and this

will be followed by a programme of indoor and outdoor entertainment.

Programmes for the event will be available nearer the date and will include performances

by Baccy Street Band, Lipstick & Lashes duo, Plymouth Morris Ladies, Groovement Company Dance and magician Emazdad Magician.

There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting, painting and photography exhibitions and much more.

It promises to be a great day for all the family and visitors can also get plenty to eat with meals, sandwiches and drinks available throughout the day provided by Age UK Plymouth.

Several of the entertainers will be performing on the Broadway in advance of the Festival opening.

Weekend of music to raise awareness of suicide

Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 - and members of the local music scene are doing their best to raise awareness of the problem.

Following the tragic suicides in February of two men connected to the Plymouth art and music scene, local musicians, artists and promoters alike wanted to do something.

Spearheaded by Ben Turner of the Underground on Mutley Plain and Rory Lethbridge, promoter and lead singer of the local band School Disco, the aim is

to raise money and awareness of suicide by putting on two days of live music on June 22 and 23.

All proceeds from the event, called the CALM MIND Weekender, will be shared between Mind Britain’s leading mental health charity - and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

Staggered between the Junction and the Underground, the bands will be coming from as far as Canada to support the fundraiser. More than 20 bands and a number of individual performers will be giving their time to the cause.

Headlining the Junction on Friday night will

be Plymouth based American Sign Language and Ontario comedian and songwriter Mishka Shubaly, while over at the Underground, alternative country favourites Paul Armer and The Long Way Down will be signing off the evening.

On Saturday, local grunge giants Radiosaurus will headline at the Junction, with indie psych outfit Tunnel Visions top of the bill across the road at the Underground.

Historic artefacts on display as part of the Historic Plympton Festival Scores of historic Plympton artefacts were on display at St Mary’s Parish Centre as the climax to the Historic Plympton Festival.

Also on display were bill heads from old local businesses. These included an invoice dating back to 1933 from motor dealer and hire car company Frederick Littlejohns who were based at The Mews on Ridgeway.

Other things visitors were able to learn from reading the information displayed was that the Scout headquarters in Station Road known as Cottle’s Lodge gets its name from Jack Cottle who founded the 1st Plympton Scout Group along with his brother in 1908.

Similarly the Guides’ building know as Betts’ is named after Sister Betts who was heavily involved with the local Brownies and Guides for many years and who was awarded the Oak Leaf in 1965 for her services to the movement. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

Visitors were able to browse old school photographs which included the entire school of Plympton Secondary Modern pupils taken in 1952 and 1955 and similar photographs of Plympton Grammar School taken in 1949, 1953 and 1955.

Among many other photographs on display was one showing the inaugural meeting of the Rotary Club of Plympton held at Elfordleigh in 1954. One of the more amusing artefacts was a programme for the Rotary’s Country Fayre at Newnham on 18 September 1994 which included a cow pat competition.

The oldest photograph on display was one believed to be the oldest surviving photograph of Plympton St Mary, taken in 1876 before the building of the Malthouses and

Aerobatic spectacular for Armed Forces Day Plymouth Armed Forces Day will feature a stunning air display when it takes place on Plymouth Hoe on Saturday June 30.

Aircraft including a Spitfire XIV, Calidus Gyro and Catalina will take to the skies above Plymouth Sound to entertain spectators, who will also be able to enjoy dramatic aerobatic shows.

The Catalina is a flying boat, with a special historical connection to Plymouth. At least two were based at Mount Batten and flown by the Royal Australian Air Force in the early years of Second World War. Aerobatics team displays will be performed

by Team Raven – a group of five pilots flying an RV4 and RV8s – the Muscle Pitts team biplane and the Fireflies Aerobatic Display Team.

Solo displays will be performed by Mark Jeffries, who placed in the top ten at the last World Aerobatic Championships and Cornish

pilot Corinne Dennis. Corinne will perform a dramatic display in her Pitts Special S-1S G-TWRL, with a combination of rolls and pirouettes, gymnastic manoeuvres and aerial ballet, all highlighted by the trail of white smoke.

Other displays include the Calidus Autogyro – which flies close to the crowd – and the AeroSuperBatics Wingwalkers; fearless wingwalkers who will perform acrobatics on the top wing of a Boeing Stearman biplane.

The Red Devils, the official parachute display team of the British Army, will end the show with a spectacular parachute show, landing in the water. Formed in 1964, the team is made up of 15 men – all full-time serving paratroopers who return to combat duties when required.

Deputy Council Leader Pete Smith said: “Every year, Plymouth Armed Forces Day offers a great day of free family

entertainment, where we can show our support for the armed forces and celebrate our city’s proud military history. This year’s air display is going to be a really spectacular show, with some incredibly talented pilots taking to the skies.”

The air display is due to start at 4.15pm, finishing at 6.05pm. All displays are subject to change and are dependent on the weather.

Three static helicopters are also expected to be stationed on Plymouth Hoe during the day: a Royal Navy Sea King, a Royal Navy Merlin and an RAF Puma (the appearances are subject to operational commitments).

Plymouth Armed Forces Day, in association with Babcock, is an annual celebration of the city’s proud military history. Visitors can enjoy parades, live music and an all-day arena and stage programme.

Sandra passed away in February 2017 after fighting a battle with cancer, which was a surprise to all but her very close friends and family.

She was a much loved member of both the ‘Bootlegs’ walking group and the Plympton Bowling Club, hence, the decision to have the rose bush and plaque donated by the ‘Bootlegs’ planted at the bowling club where it will be treasured and cared for.

Teenager Molley Disney selected as Plympton’s next youth ambassador Plympton Community Council have announced their choice to be Plympton’s next Youth Ambassador.

She is 17 year old Molly Disney who is a student at Hele’s School.

Molly was chosen for the role after a recent selection process at Harewood House.

The role of Youth Ambassador was first introduced in 2017 in an effort to give a greater voice to young people in Plympton.

The Youth Ambassador attends and speaks at meetings of the community council as well as attending civic events and other functions.

Outgoing Youth Ambassador Isaac Hudson has done things such as march in the Remembrance Sunday parade in Plympton and lay a poppy cross on behalf of the young people

of the town at the cenotaph by Plympton Castle.

He has also engaged with the Royal British Legion about youth matters, attended a seminar for young people at Plympton Academy, had tea with the Lord Mayor at the official residence on the Hoe and handed out prizes at the Rotary Club of Plympton’s Youth Speaks competition.

After her selection to be Isaac’s successor Molly said: “I feel very honoured to be the next Youth Ambassador to encourage young people to speak out and ensure that their views will be heard.”

Mental health matters is one of the things Molly has identified as a big issue among young people at the moment and she feels it is important that they know where to go for help.

Molly is now looking forward to

being invited to events during her year in office.

She was due to be installed at a formal investiture ceremony along with the next Stannator, Natalie Harrison, as the Chronicle was going to press.

Outgoing Stannator Andrew Hill who was on the selection panel said: “We had a strong group of applicants come forward and the interview panel had quite a difficult task choosing the successful candidate as all the applicants had something they could offer to the role.

A father and son from Plympton reached the recent finals of the 13th Cornish National Smite Championships staged at Calstock.

Colin and Ben Lees have been entering the annual tournament for a number of years but this year, for the first time, they progressed beyond the group stages, to reach the finals where they found themselves up against reigning World Smite Doubles Champions Matt Newing from Camborne and Dan Cole from Dobwalls.

Unfortunately, despite excelling in the earlier rounds, they found themselves no match for the reigning world champs who won 2-0 to become the first doubles pairing ever to hold both the World Doubles and Cornish National titles simultaneously.

Earlier in the afternoon the champions had defeated another Plympton pairing, mother and daughter Deborah and Savannah Vertessy, 2-0 in the quarter finals.

Smite is a game similar to lawn skittles. The Cornish Nationals are held in Calstock on the second May Bank Holiday Monday every year and the World Championships take place in St Neot on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Former Plymstock School student does volunteering work in Nepal An ex-Plymstock School student has recently returned from an exciting opportunity to volunteer in Nepal, writes Erin Downes.

After the 2015 earthquake, the Kavrepalanchok district of Nepal was badly impacted, meaning the issues in this already vulnerable area began to increase.

In order to tackle some of these issues, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) created a volunteering programme for young people to get involved, an opportunity that Jay Holton gladly took.

He felt urged to take part due to the huge inequality globally, as there are countless amounts of people who are less fortunate than him, but equally, if not more deserving of the quality of life he is so grateful to have.

The project aimed to primarily assist in the education of those children affected by the earthquake, through a range of programmes. These included sexual harassment and domestic violence awareness, first aid and WASH training and even a focus on career development (such as help writing CVs).

However, the volunteers themselves were given a lot of freedom in terms of planning their own events, including community football games across multiple schools, primary school drawing competitions and spelling competitions.

Jay and his partner Anup decided that as part of their personal project, they wanted to ensure safety of all the students, leading them to the idea of making young children’s play areas safer.

Through constructing a secure fence along the cliff edge that neighboured a playground, they successfully reduced the vulnerability of these young children.

Volunteers were also given the opportunity to help with individual improvements, such as cleaning, organising and painting schools and classrooms to create a better learning environment. Once again, Jay and his partner Anup decided to focus on ensuring safety, as Jay strongly believed that: “If I can improve one person’s

Consequently the pair decided to install concrete bins across multiple communities to encourage the safe and controlled burning of waste and reduce the detrimental impact it was having on the communities.

Part of the programme also included being fully immersed into Nepalese culture. Volunteers were able to live with families in the communities they were helping, meaning Jay and his group were able to stay in an area called Parkhal Chour.

This allowed the volunteers to build strong relationships with the communities, including the children and teachers that they were working closely with. However, despite being an amazing opportunity, this immersion into their culture had some disadvantages - the main one being the language barrier.

Despite having partners who could speak Nepali (as the families they were staying with couldn’t speak any English), Jay said that learning the language himself was difficult, leading to a few awkward moments.

However, he also recognised how rewarding it was to be able to reach out to them through their own language, and how it allowed them to develop an emotional relationship, rather than one based solely on verbal communication.

When speaking to Jay about his experience, he emphasised the complex nature of the trip, and how even his most and least favourite moments overlapped.

Being able to visit such a range of areas of Nepal was a highlight, as he got the chance to visit Bhaktupur Durbar Square, Panauti, Banepa, Nyatapola, Thamel and of course Khatmandu, as well as the community he was based in.

Despite an overwhelmingly positive trip, Jay easily pinpointed his most poignant moment.

As they prepared to return home to the UK, they were able to visit the schools they had been working closely with for the final time. He said the impact they had was clear, mainly due to the reactions of the children and teachers once they knew he was leaving.

“To see how much we meant to these kids meant the world because they certainly meant a lot to us.” Whilst being able to help others was beneficial in itself, Jay also mentioned many new skills that he gained whilst volunteering.

Life skills

The main lessons he learnt were actually life skills rather than practical skills, especially as he began to realise how important it is to be open to other cultures and ways of life.

“Although we may not always understand other cultures, we should treat them with empathy (especially because our culture may equally seem very different to them). Not only this, but Jay also learnt how to think on his feet, especially as he was often left to entertain 30+ children at one time, even with a language barrier and little preparation or supplies!

“I would recommend this opportunity to anyone who feels they aren’t reaching their full potential, or they need the time to really figure out their true calling, or even if you just want to help more than you can in your daily life.

“I’m sure there’s infinite reasons someone might want to do something like this but at the end of the day, all you should have to even consider this is a good heart.”

Property Market Update with Matthew and Sarah Curtin of Novahomes

The bank of Mum and Dad The Bank of Mum and Dad is now an established part of the UK housing market. Parents helping their children onto the housing ladder are paying an average of £18,000 - but the amount varies considerably by area. In total for the year, it will be an equivalent of a £5.7bn mortgage lender, supporting around 27% of all buyers, up from 25% in 2017.

Figures from Legal and General show parental generosity varies across the country, unsurprisingly the highest average loan comes from families in London with a spend of £30,600. Here in the South West, we are supporting our family by an average of £19,300 which is the third highest amount in the country. In most cases, it is parents donating the money for these purchases, but

grandparents, other family members and even friends supported 108,800 purchases between them last year.

Surprisingly, the research suggests it’s not just those in early adult life or first time buyers who are getting support. Over four out of 10 buyers aged 35 to 44 received financial help from family and friends, with more than a quarter of those aged 45 to 54 still relying on the Bank of Mum and Dad. Can it go on? An average ‘loan’ of £18,000 is not exactly pocket change and when you look at the country as a whole, £5.7bn is an eye watering sum of money. However, you may be surprised to know this is actually lower than in 2017. The total that year was a massive £6.5bn!

Unsurprisingly, this is having a toll on the parents, with 10% admitting that their generosity had left them feeling less secure about their own financial future, and nearly 1 in 5 say

that they cut back as a result.

Not every parent has such a large sum of cash available so where does the money come from? There are ways for parents to use the equity in their existing homes to help their children buy their first property, without resorting to selling up and downsizing.

Lenders have recognised the trend and now there are schemes available where parents and children can go into partnership.

For example, The Post Office offers a ‘family-link’ mortgage, which works by giving the first time buyer a 90 per cent loan-to-value mortgage secured against the property they’re buying plus an interest-free five-year loan secured on a close relative or parent’s home.

A project to improve the internal lighting of the roof at Plympton St Maurice Church has come to fruition. The project cost £52,000 and was completed within two weeks.

The new lighting has revealed a series of stars on the roof at the chancel end and now the inside of the church has been better lit up. It has been found to be in better condition than expected for a building of its age.

The new lighting has various options, including lighting up the whole roof, or just highlighting the internal cross.

Oliver Twist at the Drum Theatre

Plympton GP practice featured in national best practice guide A Plympton-based medical group and local pharmacies have been featured in a new national best practice guide.

The National Association of Primary Care has published their new guide to inspire further integration of community pharmacy within primary care homes (PCHs) to improve patients’ health and support them to manage their conditions.

The Beacon Medical Group GP practice which supports patients across Ivybridge, Plymouth and South Devon has featured heavily in its efforts to work more closely with high street pharmacies and provide more services for local people.

While community pharmacy and general practice have traditionally worked closely together, the paper concludes that by learning from those leading the way, such as Beacon Medical Group, and exploring innovative ways of working together they could have a far bigger impact on improving the health and care needs of their local population.

The new guide Primary care home: community pharmacy integration and innovation was developed by national clinical leaders and looks at ways local pharmaceutical committees such as Devon Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC),

community pharmacies and PCHs can make greater use of pharmacists’ skills as part of a PCHs’ whole population health management approach.

Pharmacists have been deployed within the Beacon GP practice to provide additional access for urgent queries, within care homes to provide proactive care and to improve medication safety and in high street locations to help vulnerable patients be protected from flu and receive care for respiratory conditions.

The local initiatives have also been celebrated nationally through the General Practice Awards.

The Devon LPC vision is for community pharmacy to be at the heart of the community delivering effective health care services. They can deliver effective health care services that are integrated into key patient pathways. The development of healthy living pharmacies across Devon also means that the profession is perfectly aligned to start moving towards Action Four - aligning population health needs and taking the first steps towards becoming local health and wellbeing hubs.

Ovenclean is just the job for Mark Starting up your own business is not for the faint hearted.

However, despite years working in the construction industry, when circumstances forced a change in direction, local man Mark Pascoe took his hard graft ethos and is using it in the world of oven cleaning.

“I don’t rush the job,” explained Mark, who only charges a flat fee for each visit. “I like to do it properly, and this can take well over two hours, up to four hours if I am cleaning a Range cooker, hood and extractor.

“Ovenclean only work with environmentally friendly products rather than abrasive or caustic cleaners, so, although the cleaning is hard work, I am not subjecting myself or the household to any nasty odours. It also means that the oven can be used straight away, and the whole process is completely safe for pets, or people with breathing conditions.”

“Obviously I keep my own cooker at home the same way. It’s so much nicer to cook in a healthy, hygienic, clean space - and I do like the kitchen looking this way. I have many customers who think the same, but for some reason, perhaps they find it harder to get down on their knees to clean, need a bit of extra help to keep up their standards.

“I am able to do a really deep clean as well, removing everything that can be, including glass and hide and slide doors, so that all the seals, hinges and hidden bits get proper attention. It definitely adds to the life of the appliance and is a really good maintenance practice.”

Lions Swimarathon raises £7800

The Linda Mortimore School of Dance Mondays 4.15pm8pm and Wednesdays 4.15pm-7pm. Linda trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London and teaches RAD ballet and the ISTD tap, modern and jazz. The school holds a very popular adult tap class and produces stage performances, with regular productions. Dance is a great platform for socialising, learning posture and gaining confidence. Women’s Fellowship (Tuesdays 2.30pm-3.30pm - In The Main Hall) Come and join this lovely group, with a vast programme of speakers, covering many subjects.

They enjoy watching various films and slide shows, have annual outings and visits by choirs. The group also hold a regular Bring and Buy table to support designated charities. It is a really friendly, welcoming group with lots of stories to tell about living through different situations and stages, as Christians. Some of the members may well be in their latter years, but have fabulous personalities and lots to share. They enjoy each other’s company and are most definitely young at heart! Woodford Men’s Meeting 10am (2nd and 4th Wednesday month) The Men’s Meeting, welcome any men who wish to join this convivial group. Pins & Needles Knitting Club 2.30pm (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month). This traditional hobby has bounced right back up in the popularity charts. People of varying ages are now picking up knitting needles and are all most welcome to come and join this group, which hand-produce and send knitted goods such as jumpers, blankets and hats for poor children in two areas of Romania and are sometimes asked to produce adult hats for Shekinah Mission, asylum seekers and refugees. One of the members makes cardigans, hats and small blankets for the Neo-natal Unit at Derriford Hospital. It doesn’t matter if you have been knitting for years, or have never seen a ball of wool before the group will openly welcome you and share their knowledge and skills! Lion President Ian Hill present medals to the young people who took part in the recent charity Swimarathon

The Lions Club of Plymouth held their annual Swimarathon earlier this year raising an impressive £7,800 in the process.

The monies raised by sponsorship for the participating teams own charities and the Lion charities has have been distributed to local charitable organisations: St Luke’s Hospice, Plymouth Transplant Games Team, Plymouth Highbury Trust, Caradon Swimming Club, New Life Charity for the community by the church. There is a good mix of children from 8-16 where they can test their scooter and skateboard skills on the ramps and jumps. Air-hockey also available. Youth workers work alongside members of the church and other volunteers to support this wonderful project. Primary-age children session 6-7pm and Secondary-age children session 7-8pm.

Laira Youth Band (Thursdays 7.15pm). The Laira Youth Brass Band started in 1972 from the members of the Sunday school at Laira Congregational Church, it has performed hundreds of concerts over the years, in every corner of the City and beyond. Scores of children have passed through its ranks. Most were taught to read music and to play their instrument whilst in the Band, and many have continued their musical hobby into adult life, some choosing a professional career in music. As well as part of the band performing (amongst others) in the weekly church service here at Woodford, the Band also put on regular concerts to raise money for local charities and take part in parades and perform at special church events. Focus on global challenges The global challenges posed by climate change, natural disasters and human impacts on the environment will be among the key topics discussed at Sustainable Earth 2018.

The annual conference, held at the University of Plymouth, will see international experts debating some of the greatest threats to the future of the planet.

There will be presentations from world-leading researchers at the university on topics including plastic pollution, coastal change, soil erosion and human displacement.

And there will be a series of workshops and poster sessions about research and initiatives ranging from changing the laws on ivory to manufactured soil, pulmonary rehabilitation in Kyrgyzstan to geothermal projects in Cornwall.

The conference, themed around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, is organised by the Sustainable Earth Institute and will take place on June 28 and 29.

Friday of each month we have free meetings and invite MPs, local councillors, local businesses, anyone able to speak on issues that affect older people, to come and talk to us. These meetings are held in the Wolseley Trust Community Building (next to Sheila’s Café in Wolseley Road), behind the Co-op just down from Milehouse traffic lights going towards St Budeaux.

These meetings start 10.30am and end at 1pm, many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car parking is usually available. We also have regular social meetings and would like to advise everyone that these will now be held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth (PL2 2EL) just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2. Professor Deborah Greaves

Leading Plymouth researcher made OBE in Queen’s Honours A world-leading researcher and role model for women in science and engineering has been made an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Deborah Greaves, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Plymouth, has been recognised for her significant contributions to research into offshore renewable energy.

That work, and her leadership at a national level, is having a direct impact on the expansion of a sector which will play a key role in the UK’s future energy production.

But she is also at the forefront of inspiring more women and girls to consider a career in engineering, a profession that has traditionally been male-dominated.

Professor Greaves’ award reflects her impact in both areas, and her nomination was supported by leading figures from both academia and industry.

She said: “This has come as a huge surprise, and I am of course delighted to receive such personal recognition for my work. Carers Week in Plymouth came this year with added music.

Plymouth City Council, and Caring for Carers – a partnership between Improving Lives Plymouth and Age UK - worked together to ensure the estimated 29,000 carers in Plymouth knew that help is available in the city, and part of this was a week of events between June 11 and 17 including music (performed by local musicians who also happen to be carers) and art sessions, supported by local charities Plymouth Music Zone, Colebrook South West Ltd and Improving Lives Plymouth.

In addition, the council has recently joined the Employers for Carers scheme, which will help it and a number of other organisations in the city support carers who work for them.

The scheme will provide practical resources, advice and information designed to help employers look after staff who are juggling work alongside caring for someone.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.

Young carers are children and young people who provide care and support for loved ones. Support available for young carers in Plymouth includes group sessions at Efford Youth Centre every Tuesday evening.

The sessions are free to join but you would need to have been referred by a professional such as your doctor, an educational psychologist, health visitor or your school.

The sessions include fun activities like cooking, arts, sports, pool, gaming or just the chance to meet and socialise with other young carers. To find out what help you can get, email gateway@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 668000.

Experience As I write this we are one day away from the 2018 Men’s football World Cup! I don’t know about you but I am very excited.

As an avid football fan, I have loved major tournaments for as long as I can remember.

The anticipation after the teams have qualified, the expectation after the squads have been announced and the ups and downs of following my team as the tournament unfolds.

Being English it does usually end in heartbreak, traditionally after a penalty shootout against the Germans or the Italians. Nevertheless I love it.

Like many millions around the world I will be glued to the screen for the next month watching as many games as I can. I’ll be meeting up with mates to watch the England matches and undoubtedly end up talking to them Dave Simpson about that goal, that refereeing decision and generally contributing to our own post-match analysis.

The theme of this year’s Carers Week, led nationally by Carers UK, was coming together to build communities that support the health and wellbeing of carers. Across the UK there are around 6.5 million people who care for a parent, partner, child or friend.

Improving Lives Plymouth, caring for carers manager Lee Sewrey said: “This carers week we pledged to facilitate activities and events that provided health and wellbeing benefits for carers and allowed them to have a little ‘me time’.”

Regular events for carers in Plymouth include a number of regular music sessions at Plymouth Music Zone for carers including: • Every other Monday: 10am to 12pm, Friends Uke-Nited for adult carers who have a little ukulele experience, singing and playing together with a view to performing in community venues.

• Every Monday: 1pm to 2pm, Carefree Choir for adult carers without those they care for, singing in harmony together for a little breathing space.

• Every Tuesday: 10.30am to 11.30am, Sharing and Caring for carers of older and disabled people, singing as a group for much needed respite and laughter.

Honesty is the best policy

BY DAVE SIMPSON, STATION MANAGER CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH a world cup for me to talk to them about different managers, transfers and all kinds of others aspects of the beautiful game. However when it comes to more serious matters like how we’re really doing in life the conversation doesn’t flow quite so freely.

When asked, ‘how are you?’ by a close friend I know that quite often I’ll respond with ‘good thanks’ regardless of how I have actually been feeling. I am quite often very genuinely ‘good thanks’ but on those days when that isn’t the case I know that a close friend might be able to help and not opening up and moving the conversation on to football or something else more trivial doesn’t really help anyone.

I’m aware this isn’t an issue just for men but I do know that my wife, my mum and other women in my life are often better at sharing how they are really feeling and helping each other through the hard times.

Sadly statistics in the UK do suggest that there is a gulf in how men and women cope when times get tough.

According to the Office of National Statistics a staggering 76% of all suicides

are committed by men. There will be multiple factors as to why that figure exists but I wouldn’t be surprised if part of it has to do with men not talking honestly about how they’re feeling.

I wonder whether some of this has to do with the phrase ‘man up’.

Unfortunately, in my experience at least, to be a man often means to be strong and unwavering both physically and emotionally. Figures released around mental health week in 2017 suggested that only 1 in 5 men would seek help for anxiety or depression.

It seems that men are prone to putting on a brave face and playing pretend. This may fool those around us but it doesn’t fool ourselves and nor does it fool the one who knows us best.

There is a famous quote in the Bible which says; ‘People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.’ God knows what is really going on inside all of us. There is no use hiding from Him. Not only does He see us as we truly are but He cares about us more than we’ll ever know and wants us to flourish in life.

The first step in that journey, whether you are a man or a woman, is being honest.

If, like me, you are hooked on world cup fever then enjoy it! Make the most of every moment and every match. Then when it comes to the post-match pint, if you know deep down that everything is not ok then please don’t simply ‘man up’ instead open up to those around you who care.

Plymstock apprentice painter Skye shines in regional contest A City College apprentice from Plymstock has claimed runner-up spot at the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year regional final.

Now in its 14th year, the prestigious painting and decorating competition celebrates young talent from across the UK. Skye-Ella Boswell, who lives in Hooe, came second and is currently a painting and decorating apprentice with Stephen Cartwright. She said: “When I heard I was the runner-up, I was very pleased with myself and it has been a big confidence booster. The competition was a great way to broaden my skills and use a range of new tools.”

The competitors had to demonstrate a wide range of skills to impress the judges and be in with a chance of making it to the national finals where they can win a cash reward, as well as a fantastic prize bundle of quality decorating tools.

Top spot in the competition went to another City College apprentice. Jess Cruiks, who lives in Cattedown took the top spot in the competition.

Jess, who is in the first year of her apprenticeship with Spectrum Property Care, said: “This is the first competition I have taken part in so I never expected to win. It was honestly a shock! Everyone else worked so hard on their own boards and the standard of work was so high.

“I have been thoroughly supported by the college and my employer in the lead up to this competition and got in a lot of practice which really paid off. I’m so happy.”
