By Revd Tom Brassil active than me you might be using the lighter evenings and warmer weather to get out and play your favourite sport. It’s great to have so many sports facilities in Plymouth: the Life Centre for swimming, plenty of pitches for team sports and even a few golf clubs for those of us who like our sport to go at a slower pace! In my locale of Sherford, we are looking forward to work beginning soon on the proposed sports centre.

On the professional sport side we often enjoy mixed fortunes of course: Argyle having just been relegated, yet maybe with a renewed sense of hope with a new manager and the chance of getting exciting new players in over the Summer.

I love the way that sport can bring us together. It brings us together as team players, and as fans all celebrating together when our team wins.

But what about when our team doesn’t win? I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was left disappointed that Johanna Konta couldn’t quite make it to the French Open final, or that the England football team couldn’t quite make it to the Nations League final.

Sadly, often when our team loses, sport can also bring out the worst in us. How many of us felt ashamed at how some of our travelling fans behaved in Portugal recently? And perhaps we find ourselves feeling silly at how angry we ourselves get when our team loses.

We get to see these two sides of sport up close in one of my favourite sporting films: Chariots of Fire. It tells the story of two runners representing Team GB at the 1924 Olympic Games.

One, Harold Abrahams, runs almost out of desperation. In one scene he describes the feeling of the race, saying he has, “10 lonely seconds to justify my existence. But will I?” His outlook is sharply contrasted with that of his teammate, Eric Liddell. He says of his running, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel his pleasure.” One man runs to justify his existence, the other to enjoy his existence. Which would you rather be?

There’s a great verse in the Bible where Jesus tells us that he has come to help us to enjoy life: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

(John 10:10) One wonderful way he does that is by showing us that we are valued regardless (or even in spite) of our levels of achievement. And so we have the freedom to try, fail, try again – and enjoy the whole process. And that sounds a lot more manageable to me!

Mouthwatering treats at new Hooe business A new family run business is set to open in Hooe this summer offering a wide selection of homemade produce including sourdough breads, bagels, croissants, sausage rolls, cakes and pancake stacks.

Lulu and Dolly’s Micro-Bakery and Chocolaterie vision is to bring communities, family and friends together through their passion for creating good wholesome food.

Using artisan processes for a personal touch, founder Kim Bell is keen to bring her passion to the Hooe community through her inspired menu ideas, which include gluten free and vegan options.

Local residents turned out in force for the ‘soft’ opening

Kim’s passion began at the age of three, baking with her French mother. Her love of the culinary arts only grew as she raised her two sons, Lewis and Leon, the inspiration behind the business name, and she went on to train as a superior patisserie le cordon bleu chef in Australia.

A ‘soft’ opening event for LuLu and Dolly’s was held in June when local people, including Coun Rebecca Smith, gathered to enjoy the passion and expertise that was felt in not only the food but the staff as well.

Kim’s strong family values ensures that Lulu and Dolly’s is a place where all are welcome, whether it’s to grab a quick bite to take out or as a place to relax and enjoy the homely atmosphere.

Local resident Paul Bradley said of the opening event: “It’s great to have a bakery in our local community. The location is great for families with the park opposite. It’s been a fantastic day with lots of people, plenty of sunshine and great food’.

Now the team at Lulu and Dolly’s Micro-Bakery and Chocolaterie are busy preparing to open to the public on June 25. The opening hours will be Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm. Hooe gets its village green after five year campaign A five year campaign to protect one of Hooe’s favourite public spaces has ended in victory.

Plymouth’s planning committee has agreed unanimously that the land known as Hooe Green should be given village green status and included in the register of village greens.

Robin Blythe-Lord, chairman of Plym Valley Heritage, said “I am absolutely delighted that it has been registered. As the only major piece of flat land within the village it acts as a focal point for the community and now it has been protected from development for the foreseeable future.

“I would like to thank all those who completed our questionnaires, sent in photographs and other evidence of use and supported us in this application. Without you it could not have been done.”

On behalf of the local community, Plym Valley Heritage completed the process of applying to have Hooe Green registered as a village green in August 2014. The application consisted of 50 seven page evidence questionnaires, a statement booklet including photographic evidence and the completed Application Form 44.

The benefits of registering land as a village green are to: • Secure permanent recording of the land as a town or village green.

• Protect the land from development and other forms of detrimental activity.

• Secure the right of local people to enjoy the land for recreation in perpetuity.

• Give the registered land a new status as land for the community, to be valued and enjoyed.

• Ensure that existing and prospective owners are aware of the established recreational function of the land.

In 1964 Plymouth City Council created the green by infilling the southern end of Hooe Lake.

This was not solely a generous municipal gift to the community, they were looking for somewhere to dump rubble from building clearance in the town centre. Remember the Guinness Clock at Drake’s Circus? Well the building that supported it is under Hooe Green.

It now forms the only large level space in Hooe and is much used by the community as a recreation ground, for dog walking, fetes and fairs.

During all this time it has been maintained and enhanced by Plymouth City Council who have planted 15 trees, installed six stainless steel benches and used section 106 monies to enlarge the playground facilities.

Since 2014 there has been substantial housing development in Hooe, particularly with the construction of over 200 houses in Hooe Lake Quarry.

Now these are occupied there has been a noticeable increase in the use of the Green for recreation, dog walking and team games; the area continuing to demonstrate its use by and benefit to the community.

As its creation was purposefully designed as a Village Green and expenditure from Plymouth City Council on its development and maintenance has been ongoing it is fitting that it is now protected from any other development and remains a valuable and irreplaceable facility for the community.

New starting point for charity walk

St Luke’s campaign to open up conversations on bereavement in schools

Local artist and hospice Patron Brian Pollard has been on the road with his hand-painted Elmer to support St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth’s campaign to open up conversations around bereavement support in local schools.

Research from the Childhood Bereavement Network states one child in 29, often one in every class, will have experienced some form of bereavement. Perhaps more heart breaking, one child in 20 will have lost a parent.

St Luke’s has been working with Brian Pollard, and schools across the city, to use their forthcoming Elmer sculpture trail to kick-start conversations with children and teachers about bereavement, and what it means.

Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth, will see a total of 40 sculptures individually painted and placed around Plymouth to raise funds at auction for the hospice. However, it is actually just one part of a larger project.

Alongside Elmer’s public appearances there is a new resource pack for schools offering lesson plans and ideas for supporting bereaved children.

Brian’s recent appearance at Boringdon Primary School in Plympton also included a school assembly about how to talk about death and dying.

He explained: “It was amazing to see their faces

when we unveiled the Elmer sculpture. They were all transfixed and really concentrating on what we were talking about. I think young children have a better idea of death than we think they do, so starting a trail of understanding from an early age is really important.”

Karen Whittington, Early Years Co-ordinator at Boringdon Primary School added: “I think people will be shocked to find out there are a lot of children going through bereavement at the moment. We want to make sure that young children are able to talk about end of life care. It’s really important that Artist Brian Pollard with teacher those children are supported Karen Whittington

and able to access the facilities at St Luke’s.”

St Luke’s will be working with a total of 25 schools as part of Elmer’s Big Parade education programme kindly supported by the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity. The programme will offer support from the hospice on how to deliver age appropriate lessons around bereavement, and each school will contribute their very own handpainted mini Elmer to form part of a dedicated trail around Mount Edgcumbe during the summer.

Gail Wilson, deputy director of Clinical Services at St Luke’s said: “We’re using creative art as a way to approach difficult conversations and are very proud of this child-friendly way to support schools, both staff and pupils, in new and original ways.

Elmer’s Big Parade is a great gateway for schools across our community to access further support from St Luke’s and our new Compassionate Schools programme.”

Organisers of a charity walk event in Plymouth in July have announced that the venue has been changed.

Plymouth is one of nine cities up and down the country staging the WALK IT event to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The event, on Saturday July 13, was originally due to start and finish on The Hoe, but will now take place at Central Park.

This follows Plymouth City Council’s decision to relocate all walking-based fund raising events to Central Park, to make the most of the £9 million investment there.

The event village will be located near the bottom end of Central Park and the 5k route takes walkers from the start point down to Armada Way and then on to The Hoe, which means there will be some beautiful views to take in - as well as being less strenuous for those who have mobility issues. The 10k route starts from the same point and takes in Royal Parade, Exeter Street, the Barbican and Waterfront.

Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000.

People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt.

Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis.

Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day.

All monies raised will be used to support Mercy Ships, a charity which uses hospital ships to deliver free vital medical care to some of the world’s poorest countries. All welcome, free entry.

local adults to learn to read Most of us take our ability to read for granted and are unaware that there are around 2.4 million adults in the UK who either can’t read at all or who struggle with this most basic requirement of everyday life.

If you are reading this, perhaps you’d consider becoming a reading coach for Read Easy Plymouth?

Read Easy Plymouth has recently formed to offer one-to-one reading coaching to local adults. It is affiliated to national charity Read Easy UK, which was set up in 2010 by Ginny Williams-Ellis, who ran the Shannon Trust’s prisoner-to-prisoner reading programme in Dorchester.

Ginny saw how a confidential, one-to-one approach could encourage people to come forward for support and successfully learn to read. The first Read Easy group was started for the wider community, and there are now 29 Read Easy groups across the country – and counting!

Read Easy Plymouth is now seeking people willing to join as volunteer coaches.

No previous experience is necessary: all that is required is a genuine passion and commitment to help local adults to learn to read. Training will be provided with the first training day for new coaches taking place on Tuesday July 16 and there are still spaces for a few more volunteer coaches.

There are many reasons why people may not have learnt to read as children. Read Easy reading coaches minimise the possible stress and embarrassment involved in learning to read as an adult by providing confidential, one-to-one tuition at flexible times and in discreet and convenient places.

Read Easy’s gentle, free, volunteer-led one-to-one approach allows people to learn in privacy, at their own pace, and with the understanding support of their own dedicated reading coach.

Why get involved? The difference Read Easy makes is genuinely ‘life-changing’; it’s a phrase that new readers use over and over

again. It helps them in so many ways: • getting jobs or promotion, or attending training courses • becoming independent shoppers of medicines, food and clothing and life’s essentials • voting in general and local elections for the first time in their lives • reading books, newspapers and accessing the Internet/social media;completing online forms too.

• campaigning with confidence for change in their local communities • having the confidence to go to the doctors or opticians for a check up • increased confidence and self-esteem, and improved mental health • supporting their children and grandchildren with reading and homework Read Easy is cost effective, its working model is very lean, with all the local organisation and one-to-one reading coaching being done entirely by committed and hard-working volunteers.

Massive project to engineer change

Every young person in Plymouth between the ages of seven and 18 will be getting a special workshop as part of a citywide initiative designed to engineer change attitudes.

A total of 15,680 pupils – all in Key Stages 2 to 5 – will attend specially tailored workshops aimed at challenging perceptions and to show that the key subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are fun.

The workshop includes a quiz, interactive activity – such as an experiment and an amazing video, Engineering Plymouth, created by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) which highlights some of the extraordinary engineering feats that have become part of Plymouth’s landscape and history – such as Smeaton’s Tower and the Breakwater.

Councillor Jon Taylor, Cabinet Member for Transformation, Education and Skills said: “Plymouth wants to see our next generation achieve and aspire and we are working with schools to create that extra buzz about learning these massively important subjects. We have a Plan for Employment and Skills and are now at the exciting stage of putting on great and fun events all designed to get children fired up.”

As well as the workshops, cracking ideas are on the cards for children and young people to get excited about STEM subjects and see how they can apply to play as well as to work.

Six primary schools Beechwood Primary, Marine

Academy Primary, Oakwood Primary, Riverside Primary, Weston Mill Primary and Woodford Primary are working with the Institution of Engineering and Technology on the first LEGO League Jr. Discovery pilot – a new programme for four to six year olds which nurtures children’s interest in STEM and develop the skills they need.

STEM coordinator Tina Brinkworth said: “These workshops are just the start. Our research shows that it only takes three memorable experiences for young people to become passionate about these subjects and to pursue them through qualifications and careers. We want Plymouth’s

young people to be passionate about STEM subjects and to inspire them in a fun way that fits in with the curriculum.”

More details of a summer-long celebration will be unveiled in the next few weeks which includes a competition, a big splash – literally – as well as heaps of activities across the city and at some key locations.

The programme is being put together through the Plymouth STEM Board – a collaboration of partners from businesses, further and higher education, who are all working to provide fantastic STEM opportunities for the city.

£7,000 Lottery boost for park The Friends of Devonport Park have been awarded a grant of more than £7000 from the Big Lottery Awards for All.

The Friends will use the £7150 grant for our its ‘Pop up Allotments’ project in Devonport Park.

This will see the creation of eight purpose-built raised planters which will be available for community use to encourage fruit and vegetable growing. Help and advice will be provided by the Friends of Devonport Park’s own voluntary gardening team and their retained horticultural consultant, Dennis Trewin.

To celebrate this award, a Healthy Living Community Fun Day will be held at the end of June, where members of the public will be able to celebrate by entering their own home grown produce into a fun fruit and vegetable show.

The year-long project will enable anyone who has an interest in trying to produce their own food to enjoy the experience of doing so, even if they don’t have a garden of their own.

Plympton Fuchsia and Geranium Group will be holding its Annual Show on Saturday July 27 in the Main Hall at Harewood House in Plympton.

The show will be open to the public from 9.30am and concludes with a raffle at 4pm.

Local residents are invited to go along and see the group’s lovely plants. Entrance to the show is £1.50.

Reasonably priced refreshments, including home-made cakes, will also be available throughout the day, as will plants for sale.

The show is the highlight of the club’s year. Anyone joining the club at the show will pay the annual membership fee of £10, which will cover membership for the whole of 2020 as well as the remainder of 2019.

Any of the committee members at the show will be happy to advise on the benefits of becoming a member.

The friendly group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Harewood House in Plympton. The meetings start at 7.30pm and generally last for a couple of hours. There is a speaker, either a member of the club or a guest, with a break for refreshments.

The next meeting is on July 9 when the guest speaker is Marie Hall, the title of whose talk is ‘Fuchsias Galore.’

The group hopes to see as many people as possible either on July 9 in the evening or at the show on July 27.

Police appeal for witnesses Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault on a woman on a busy road into Plymouth city centre.

The 45-year-old Plymouth woman was punched in the face by a man following an altercation about the victim’s dog. She sustained facial bruising and swelling as a result of the attack.

The incident happened at Cattedown roundabout around 7.25am on Friday 7 June.

A 56-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of assault ABH and has been released on bail until 5 July.

A police spokesman said: “This assault happened on a busy roundabout on a main route into the city centre so someone must have witnessed what happened.

“We would ask anyone who saw the incident or anyone who has any information to assist with the investigation to come forward.”

Girls power their way to fabulous season of footballing success Plympton’s local ‘girls only’ football club, Plymouth Aspire FC, have enjoyed an incredibly successful season, writes Erin Downes.

With no facilities of their own when the club was formed in 2017, Plymouth Aspire teams had to use primarily council pitches.

But the club last year teamed up with Plymouth Speedway at Marsh Mills as the home of the girls’ football club. This has enabled them to have their own pitches and facilities to continue in encouraging girls to get involved in football.

Plymouth Aspire FC aims to provide a fun, enjoyable environment to help develop and nurture their football skills, to reach their own potential, as well as building friendships in an inspirational way. The club now manages three very successful teams and is looking at opening a new girls development group shortly.

The 2018-19 season has proved to be extremely successful for all of the teams, with the Under 12 Girls winning the ESF Minehead tournament, meaning they will head to St Georges Park in August for the National Finals

and the Under 16s reaching the finals of the Devon Junior Minor League Cup. As well as this, the Under 14 girls were given the opportunity to attend the International Open in Holland, playing in a competition of 20 international teams in an Under 15 age group.

Not only did the team win all three of their games in their group on the first day, allowing them to enter the second day at the top of the table, but they also came second overall as the only English team in the final.

The work that Plymouth Aspire are doing to encourage the involvement of young women in football is vital, particularly with the clear benefits that playing football can provide.

A study from UEFA and the University of Birmingham recently suggested that when investigating the psychological and emotional state of young women in Europe, those who play football have reported higher levels of self-confidence, as well as overall wellbeing.

Police issue warning over biker ‘ride outs’ Devon and Cornwall Police have been made aware of a number of reports involving large numbers of young people on push bikes meeting for a ‘ride out’ and then cycling across the city.

Some of the reports received and CCTV viewed have identified that a small number of the young riders have been cycling in groups across pavements, within multistorey car parks and shopping centres, endangering pedestrians, contravening traffic signs and other offences which are unlawful, anti-social and in some circumstances could be considered as dangerous.

A force statement said: “The Police do not want to stop young people enjoying themselves and riding their bikes together, however it is essential that riders do so lawfully and pay attention to other road users including pedestrians.

“One of the force priorities is to create a safe, enjoyable community for everyone to enjoy therefore we encourage parents to engage with their children to ensure they understand the laws when cycling on the highway and to ensure that they stay safe on their bike including wearing the appropriate safety equipment.

Police are working closely with other agencies to address concerns from the community and to ensure that young people can continue to enjoy riding their bike safely.”

Surprise 90th birthday party for former Plympton librarian An honorary Stannator of Plympton and former Plympton librarian had a surprise when he turned up at the site of his former workplace at lunchtime recently - a party had been laid on to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Phil Armson was the head librarian at Plympton Library for many years, during the days when it was housed in an old wooden building.

Last month he was lured to go along to the modern day library on the premise of giving a talk about the history of the position of Stannator of Plympton.

Phil was instrumental in the late 1970s in seeking its reintroduction to the town after Plympton’s amalgamation into Plymouth.

However, he found himself a focal point in a different way when he was greeted by the current and many former Stannators as well as Deputy Lord Mayor Coun Terri Beer and her husband consort Colin for a surprise party to celebrate his 90th birthday.

When Phil retired from the library, Plympton Community Council made him an honorary Stannator, one of just four people to be bestowed with the title to date.

Charlotte is Plympton’s new Youth Ambassador

A student at Plympton Academy is to be the next Plympton Youth Ambassador.

Fourteen-year-old Charlotte Bryant was selected for the role following a competitive interview process staged by Plympton Community Council at Harewood House recently.

Charlotte will take over from current Youth Ambassador Molly Disney at a ceremony later in June to invest both her and the new Stannator Fiona Smith.

The previous two Plympton Youth Ambassadors came from Devonport High School for Boys and Hele’s School.

Charlotte’s mum, Hannah Glover, said: “I am one very proud mum.”

Beaches stay closed Beaches around the Mount Batten peninsula remain closed as a precautionary measure after small pieces of low grade asbestos were found, and while Plymouth City Council carried out tests.

Asbestos is only an issue if fibres become airborne, and one of the priority actions was to test sand samples to see if they contained any asbestos fibres.

Sand sample test results which came back revealed that no asbestos fibres had been found.

Plymouth City Council is working with external asbestos experts to risk assess the actions which need to be taken to reduce risks to a minimum, and will continue to keep the beaches closed while more of the asbestos-containing cement is cleared.

A council spokesperson said: “We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience of the beach closures, but the health and safety of our residents remains our top priority.”

Students put their poetic skills to the test...

Students at Plympton Academy have risen to the challenge of learning a poem by heart.

The Year 7 students were set a challenge by Plympton Stannator Natalie Harrison to learn Wordsworth’s famous poem Daffodils.

Mrs Harrison then visited the school to listen to the students reciting it. She stayed to have tea with the youngsters and was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

The flowers, including Sweet Williams and Stocks, were all grown in the

Plympton area, and were supplied by the Ridgeway florist Miss Pinks in honour of the Stannator’s visit.

The Stannator said: “It was a pleasure to visit Plympton Academy again where I received such a warm welcome.

“I thoroughly enjoyed listening to members of Year 7 recite Daffodils by William Wordsworth to commemorate Spring. It was clear that the students had worked very hard to learn this iconic poem and worked really well as a team to recite it.”

Pupil Aradia Turton, aged 13, said: “I really enjoyed learning the poem

and it was much easier learning four verses than I thought it would be.”

Fellow student, 12-year-old Jack James, thought the poem was really good. “It was a challenge to learn it all, but I am proud of myself that I did,” he said.

Plympton Academy teacher Martin Edmonds added: “Learning a poem by heart helps to develop the memory, improves language skills and builds confidence.

“We are very proud of our students for learning this poem and have now set a longer poem as their next challenge!”

...while others take part in business challenge Year 12 students from Plympton Academy took part in a careers event with a difference recently.

‘You’re Hired’ is a business challenge issued to 17 year olds across Plymouth by a number of local, national and international businesses. It challenges them to solve commercial problems in a creative and strategic way.

The first round of the selection process starts with the heats, one per school, and the winners then progress on to the final at Plymouth

University in July.

The Plympton Academy heat was run by BAM Construction who asked the students to design a bridge which could sustain a specific weight, be accessible for cars, and span an appropriate distance.

Students set to the challenge in predetermined teams with access to day to day resources like paper and sticky tape. For every item they used they were charged from a fake budget, meaning they had to try to be cost effective and energy efficient

in their approach.

The event was particularly special for the students at the academy, as BAM Construction is working on the school’s new build, allowing the students to see the complexity of sticking to plans and meeting briefs.

After a competitive morning of activities the Plympton Academy finalists were chosen: Robbie Evans, Bethany Watson, Kirsty Wroe and Jack Skidmore. Reserves are Rose Whitely, Sophie Lord, Ben Campbell and Ryan Lord.

Time for Lions Club Dartmoor Walk Plymouth Lions Club’s annual Dartmoor Walk takes place on Sunday July 7.

The annual 10 mile walk will start and finish at Lee Mill and all walking teams, including families, workmates, schools and club are welcome to take part.

The event is not a race and teams of all ages and abilities can join in the fun. Each team will complete the designated course and raise money through sponsorship for their own chosen charity and local Lions’ charities. Sponsorship will be split 50/50 between the two.

The Lions Club organise and monitor the 10 mile walk with RAYNET at check points with refreshment tents en route. There will be a hot pasty and cuppa for all walkers on completion of the event.

Trip down memory lane According to Plato: ‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything’ and one of Plymstock’s local dementia support groups clearly agrees with this statement, as well as the healing power of music, writes Erin Downes.

Music for the Memory is a local dementia support group run by Age UK in Plymstock. The free service is much valued among dementia sufferers and their carers in the area, providing many emotional benefits.

Dementia can be incredibly socially isolating, so these interactive and fun sessions allow both memory loss sufferers and carers to socially engage with others.

The sessions are not only an interesting way to socialise, but they are also said to have great psychological benefits for people with dementia.

Research suggests that listening to music or singing can provide emotional benefits for those with Alzheimer’s and other types of memory loss through tapping deep into areas of the brain that are relatively undamaged by the disease.

While these sessions are of course targeted at those with memory loss, they also act as an invaluable source of support for carers, giving them the opportunity to have a few hours of respite from their role as carer.

There is no need to have a diagnosis or be referred into the service by a health professional to join the group – simply contact the Age UK team to find out how to get involved. The sessions have been generously funded for the upcoming year by the Co-op Community Fund along with sponsorship raised at the annual Bradley Westell Charity Golf Day. Lynne Hodgson, fundraising and marketing manager at Age UK Plymouth said: “The Music for the Memory sessions are growing in popularity and provide our guests with the opportunity to engage with others whilst having fun and a jolly good sing along. Funding from our sponsors has enabled us to continue this much needed service for the next 12 months and as demand increases, we hope to be able to introduce new sessions in the future.”

Plymouth awarded Plastic Free City status in recognition of fight against plastic pollution

Apologies for the missing column last month. I was at a wedding over the early May Bank Holiday and by the time I got home, I’d missed the deadline!

Since I last wrote, we’ve had local elections which saw my colleague, Coun Kathy Watkin, get elected to take over from Ken Foster who retired after around two decades supporting the Plymstock Radford community. Thanks Ken and welcome to Kathy!

A couple of things that have taken place in the last few weeks: After around four years of hard work by the Plym Valley Heritage Group, Hooe Green has been officially designated as a village green.

Designation as a village green is a surprisingly lengthy legal process and the success is testimony to the hours the team spent working with the council’s legal team to get the application and evidence required just right. In straight forward terms, this means that Hooe has protected green space forever. Well done to all those involved in the application.

I just had the simple task of voting for the application in the Planning Committee.

It turns out that applying for double yellow lines can take around 10 months from start to painting. One of the first things I did after my election last year was meet with some residents on Randwick Park Road who live in a tiny cul-de-sac which had no yellow lines at its junction with the rest of the road.

This meant it was possible to park right up to the junction, making it really hard for residents to get in and out on the bend safely.

Pleased to say that using our Living Streets Budget, all three Radford Councillors supported this request and the lines were painted a few weeks ago (see photo below).

Campaigners in Plymouth are celebrating as the city has been awarded Plastic Free Community status in recognition of the hard work of partners across the city to reduce single use plastics and tackle plastic pollution.

The accolade was confirmed by Surfers Against Sewage, and comes on the anniversary of Plymouth achieving Plastic Free Communities status for its historic waterfront, and the launch of the city’s Plan for Plastics.

The success was announced at the second birthday party of Environment Plymouth; the strategic, citywide ‘green’ network that has led on the recruitment of local plastics champions since December 2017.

The event will also see a celebration of the first anniversary of the launch of the Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics led by the city’s Plastics Task group.

The Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Task Group is made up of a wide range of partners from across the voluntary, statutory, public and private sector in Plymouth and is committed to reducing single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution.

The news also follows a successful Great British Spring Clean during March and April when almost 600 volunteers took part in litter picks and beach cleans across Plymouth, collecting 1079 bags of litter on the way.

The events were coordinated by local community groups Clean Our Patch and Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and the oldest item found was a crisp packet dating back to 1973.

The campaign to raise awareness of society’s misuse of single use plastics has been warmly welcomed by everyone involved to date and shows no sign of slowing down.

Jackie Young, Environment Plymouth’s coordinator, said: We’ve been overwhelmed by the local enthusiasm for this campaign. It owes much to the inspiration of Sir David Attenborough and the ‘Blue Planet’ effect but local support has been inspirational too.

“We are also very grateful for Surfers Against Sewage’s guidance and the strength of the Task Group’s collaboration. Gaining Plastic Free Community status for the whole city is the icing

Since Plymouth’s Plan for Plastics was launched in June 2018: • 118 schools, community groups, families and individuals have signed up to be Plastic Free Community Ambassadors and 102 local businesses have signed up to be Plastic Free Pioneers as part of the work led by Environment Plymouth.

• 72 campaigners have taken part in awareness raising ‘plastic surgery’ workshops • 800 volunteers took part in 160 litter picks with local community group Clean Our Patch, and collected 4,0000 bags of litter.

• 748 volunteers have taken part in beach cleans with Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and collected 261 bags of rubbish and 5,000 ‘nurdles’ (small plastic pellets used in a number of products).

• CATERed who provide school meals for 67 of Plymouth’s secondary schools have removed 8,000 plastic straws, removed disposable plastic packaging and moved over to biodegradable.

• A Sea Bin has been installed by Plymouth City Council at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of a pilot project to monitor plastic pollution with the University of Plymouth • A ‘code of conduct’ is being developed to enable all event organisers in Plymouth to demonstrate their commitment to reducing single use plastic.

• Funding for the campaign was secured from Sea Changers and South West Water.

• Water refill points are being installed at key sites across the city for people to fill up their reusable bottles and help reduce waste, as part of a joint project by South West Water and Plymouth City Council. Refill Devon now has over 30 refill stations across the city.

• Environment Plymouth have won national recognition for the campaign from Groundwork’s 2018 Community Awards and regional recognition from the Chartered Institute of Waste Management SW for related presentations on ‘The Blue Planet Effect’ and Single Use Plastics.

• Two Plymouth based projects, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Blue Marine have recently been awarded national funding by Waitrose and Partners and Hubbub to tackle the biggest and the smallest elements of plastic pollution – ghost gear from the fishing industry and microplastics.

• Plymouth City Council has pledged to ban single use plastics on all its premises by September 2019. on the cake in a year that has seen a considerable change in attitudes to single use plastic and the impact it has on the environment.”

Rachel Yates, Plastic Free Communities project officer at Surfers Against Sewage said: “We have over 500 communities across the UK working to free where they live from single-use avoidable plastic, from the beach all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. It’s not about removing all plastic from our lives, it’s about kicking our addiction to throwaway plastic and changing the system that produces it.

“Plymouth is the largest city to date to achieve the Plastic Free Approved accreditation, which means they have put in place the five core objectives of the campaign. We hope this accreditation will be a boost to their continued

efforts to tackle single-use plastic across the city.”

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council said: “It’s been a fantastic year since Plymouth’s Plan for Plastics was launched and we are absolutely delighted the city has been awarded citywide Plastic Free Community status.

So much has been achieved by all the partners, but we can all still do more.”

Councillor Darren Winter, Chair of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has got involved, particularly those who have volunteered to give up their time to help the fight to tackle plastic pollution including all the litter pickers and beach clean volunteers, and especially Environment Plymouth who have led on the Plastic Free Community work.”

Plymstock children’s author Richard Heddington has published the sixth book in the Henry the Hedgegnome series.

The illustrated picture books about the little hedgehog who wears stripy socks have been a hit with children around the world. Richard puts the success of Henry the Hedgegnome down to a combination of everyone’s love of hedgehogs and the simplicity of the illustrations. “Henry is real enough for children to believe in him, but simple enough for them to easily draw for themselves,” he said.

Big Bopper the Whopper has a wiggle in his walk – and a brand new home Back in November 2018 Gables Dogs and Cats Home in Plympton took in a morbidly obese collie who they named Big Bopper the Whopper.

Bopper waddled into Gables weighing a staggering 50kg - 8 stones - and was too large to fit comfortably in their kennels.

Bopper’s plight touched the heart of the nation and his story spread far and wide resulting in plenty of well wishes and support from people around the world.

An appeal for funds to help Bopper resulted in donations of over £2,700 - smashing the target by a third.

Bopper became something of a media celebrity and his story was featured on TV and in national newspapers.

Bopper had been living on site at Gables in the home of the deputy manager, Ruth Rickard who had previously cared for, and subsequently re-homed, another overweight dog known as Hattie ‘The fattie’.

Despite the attachment that Ruth, and all the staff, felt for Bopper they could not give him the retirement home he deserved.

Ruth said: “I absolutely loved, and still love, that big smiley boy. He was always so happy to see everyone and was never once fazed by all the publicity and attention he received, in fact I think he enjoyed it.

“I would have given anything to give him the home he needed but after taking on Hattie, who requires twice daily insulin injections, I knew in my heart my home was not quite right for him, and all we ever want is what is best for our animals.”

The one thing missing for him was a loving forever home, but he has now lost all but a few kilos of his excess weight and found a wonderful new home.

Ruth reached out to a wonderful local couple who had previously adopted five older rescue dogs from Gables.

As they only had two older lady Labradors in the home, it was hoped that they would like a gentlemen friend and after a few visits it was clear that they would both welcome him with open paws.

He has settled in very well and is enjoying plenty of short walks on the moors to help him shed the last of his weight and everyone at Gables is just thrilled for him.

Cross Rhythms Plymouth community radio station is now reaching further than ever before.

The station, which has been broadcasting in the city since 2007 on 96.3FM, can now be heard clearer across the city and its signal travels much further.

It can now be picked up in areas north of Yelverton on the moors and into much of South East Cornwall.

The decision from Ofcom to grant increased transmission power was not guaranteed as several stations across the country were unsuccessful in their applications.

Cross Rhythms Plymouth station manager David Simpson said of the ruling: “We are delighted to have been awarded this increase. It is great to have our FM signal much clearer across the city and we are so pleased that as a result more people will be able to tune in to the station.

“From feedback we receive from listeners we know the station encourages many people in Plymouth. We are committed to airing positive and life-affirming content and we hope that listeners who tune in on FM will notice the improvement to the signal.”

The development comes at a key time for the station in which they are looking to upgrade much of their now ageing equipment. As a community radio station Cross Rhythms Plymouth is charity run and so is looking to raise much of the funds required for these upgrades. As a part of its programming the station is committed to promoting local charities, community groups and organisations who are working for the good of Plymouth and the local area.

The Community Matters programme, airing weekdays at 11am, provides those organisations with a fantastic opportunity to explain their work.

History in the making at week-long festival 2019’s week-long Historic Plympton Festival, part of the Plymouth History Festival which ran for the whole of May, proved a significant success, writes Andrew Hill of the Plympton Podcast.

There was plenty to do and see as part of the week which comprised a mixture of regular annual events and some new features. The event kicked off with a display of historic items at the Guildhall in Plympton St Maurice.

Among the many interesting items to see there was an old Pathe News video showing the Plympton St Maurice wooden fire tender at work, a handwritten minutes book of Plympton Working Mens’ Club dating back to 1892, two large scale maps of old Plympton before many of today’s houses were built, a public enquiry report into Plymouth’s intended take over of Plympton and a cane once used on the backsides of pupils at Plympton Grammar School!

Other items which caught the eye there included a brass plaque which once adorned the pole on castle mound, a picture of the 1902 Coronation celebrations at Castle Green and a card for the public opening ceremony of Plympton St Maurice Primary School on 16 November 1954, two months after its first pupils had started to be taught there.

The Monday of the festival also afforded residents and visitors the opportunity to look around Plympton St Maurice Church and appreciate its ornate internal wooden carvings and stained glass windows.

Tuesday traditionally features a history talk in the afternoon at Harewood House and this year’s subject was ‘Society and Economy in the Age of the Black Death” presented by David Stone.

Sylvia Guthrig’s local history plays have become a mainstay of the festival’s Wednesday evening and once again she did not disappoint with her well researched play ‘Educating Plympton’ which

was staged at the Lutheran Church in Larkham Lane.

Sylvia’s play tracked the education system from the days when few people in the town could read or write, a situation the landowners of the day were keen to perpetuate so they could have a ready source of labourers.

The play explained how educated folk tended to be in monasteries and such education as was available to village folk in those days was often at church Sunday Schools.

Those not fully honed on Plympton’s history learned that in 1664 Plympton Free Grammar School in George Lane was built to provide free education to the poor children of the area through funds provided by Elize Hele.

Sir Joshua Reynolds’ father, Rev’d Samuel Reynolds, was the first headmaster of the school and Joshua himself went on to become a pupil.

The play set out the hard life endured by children in those days, when there were no ready sources of artificial light and candles were expensive to come by. They would have lengthy school days during the week and attend Sunday

School as well, leaving them with little free time of their own.

The Thursday of the history festival centred around St Mary’s Church and the Priory at the back of its grounds, with knowledgeable guides at both sites on hand to talk to those who came along to have a look around.

The Brook Inn was the focal point for the Friday where people were able to meet, dance and sing with the Plymouth Morris Men. The climax to the week came on the Saturday and Sunday with the Plympton and District Civic Society’s display of artefacts and memorabilia in St Mary’s Church Hall and the medieval reenactment group the Age of Chivalry camping at Plympton Priory and giving talks and putting on battle re-enactments.

The display in the church hall this year included a scrap book loaned by a Lee Moor resident and contained many newspaper cuttings from the 1930s and 1940s. As well as wartime events the cuttings included reports of non-war related accidents and funeral reports regularly gave a list

of those who attended.

The scrap book turned out to be particularly poignant for Civic Society chairman Rose Hamley as it included a report of a motor accident in which her grandfather Frederick Thomas Friendship lost his life a few years before Rose was born.

by Boringdon Cottages near Lee Moor in 1939. The coroner’s report indicated he died from ‘a fracture at the base of the skull and cerebral lacerations.’

Other newspaper cuttings in the scrap book included how the Lee Moor Co-op had voted by 51 votes to 19 to merge with the Plymouth Co-op but that it fell fractionally short of the three quarters majority needed to carry the resolution.

There was also a picture of the foxhounds by the cross in Cornwood Square during a wartime meet and pictures and a report of a new vicar being installed in the village in early 1944. With scrap books largely a thing of the past now, this was a real treasure in this year’s display.

Talented hairdresser Stacey wins top award - and spends day at leading London salon

Former City College Plymouth hairdressing student, Stacey Stewart has recently spent a day in London, meeting famous hairdresser, Errol Douglas and observing how his Knightsbridge salon is run, after winning best in her category and the overall Inspire Hairdressing Photographic Challenge 2018 competition.

Replicating professional competitions, this contest requires students to create a style and submit one photograph for judging by Errol Douglas and managing director of Schwarzkopf Professional, Peter Belcher.

Mum of three Stacey, 33, was one of hundreds of applicants to enter the competition, submitted a photo of her model at the college’s annual Hair Show and claimed first place in the ‘Avant Garde’ category and was crowned the overall winner.

Stacey, who lives in Honicknowle, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and experience of the competition, and the standard of the entries gave judges a tough decision in choosing just one winner! I was so surprised to win, but I put it down to thorough research, hard work and the confidence I gained at college.”

To recognise her achievements, Stacey was awarded an engraved glass trophy for her individual category, and a larger engraved trophy, goodie bag, and the once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to London, meet renowned hairdresser Errol, and spend a day at his Knightsbridge salon, as the competition’s overall winner.

Stacey said: “I was honoured to meet Errol.

I recently heard a great phrase from somebody very close to me. The phrase was: ‘that Jesus had a lot of fans, but not necessarily followers.’

It was in the context of the two of us discussing what authentic Christian spirituality looked like. This person had gone through a seriously traumatic and tough time but had not let go of their faith in Christ Jesus, despite the very real pain of their circumstances. At the same time because of that deep spiritual faith and connection with God they were also able to be real with their emotions going through the process, thus revealing their emotional and relational intelligence.

When it comes to an answer for people’s growing challenges with mental health, loneliness and issues of wellbeing, a connection with ‘our Creator’ provides an anchor in the incredible storms of life that we are all prone to experience at some time or other. Jesus Himself said: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because

I have overcome the world.” John 16 v 33.

The phrase I mentioned at the start of this article can be likened to a football analogy: I know some really committed football fans who are absolutely dedicated to their clubs, but with respect to everybody who follows a club they don’t play at a professional level for the team.

Playing seriously on the pitch where the rules of the game are quite exacting, and every member of the team must train to experience the games being won or lost is a demanding process. Win on the pitch and you have more fans, lose and you’re in big trouble. It’s the stuff of life that besets us all.

That is why I recommend to our church members: “live to the audience of one” because Jesus is the only one who truly judges you fairly whether you win or lose with some of the choices that are Chris Cole

made on the journey of life. I’ve been around the church community for almost forty years and much of it is wonderful with many people trying their best to be a support to their teammates, but the church is still made up of people on a journey requiring increased healing, maturity and in need of constant training or what the church calls discipleship.

Christianity is a lifestyle that requires training and only truly works if the individual applies his or herself to the process. I believe that if you come to church with a hungry heart to know about God, you’ll receive a revelation of communication from His heart to yours, not just some religious information solely to your head. The essential issues of life come out of the spiritual heart of a human being.

He has a phrase for his organisation which says RZIM (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries) has been set up “to help those who think to believe and those who believe to think.” We need to employ both head and heart in balance to handle the challenges that come our way. When we know, experientially by God’s interaction with us our incredible worth to Him, then we are equipped to play a great game on the pitch of life and not just be spectators in the stands. God doesn’t want you religious, he wants you free and a life changer, winning in life despite how tough the game can sometimes get.

Council U-turn on plans to remove cobbles from West Pier

A petition signed by thousands of people has led to a U-turn by Plymouth City Council over plans to remove cobbles from part of West Pier.

The planned programme of work on the historic pier - which is home to the Mayflower Steps - originally allowed for the cobbles to be replaced by flat-cut natural stone.

However, after a public outcry Council Leader Tudor Evans issued a statement confirming that the cobbles will stay. He said: “The council has to repair West Pier so it does not collapse into the sea and to do that vital work we need to lift the cobbles.

“The plan was to re-lay the cobbles nearby on the Barbican, but over the last few days it has been made abundantly clear to me that people want to see the cobbles put straight back on West Pier once repairs have been made. I have listened to what has been said and I have made it clear to the project team that the cobbles must remain on West Pier - and they will.”

Apart from repairing the surface of the peir, the plans include: • New coordinated street furniture and lighting – natural stone seating and lighting columns will run along the pier’s north side and will include street furniture needed for events, such as power supply points, waste bins, bollards and a drinking fountain • A new cantilevered balcony at the east end of the pier for people to get a cracking view of the Sound and Mountbatten • A new scheme of interpretation highlighting the story of Plymouth as a key point of departure for the Mayflower and over the centuries.

There are great speakers, most of the time demonstrating watercolours, acrylics, oils, pastels and drawing - a wide variety to suit everyone!

Plymstock Gardening Society Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month at Plymstock United Church Hall, Plymstock Road, Oreston from 7.30pm to 9pm. The hall is open from 7pm and there is parking available at the rear of the building. Visiting speakers on a range of topics with tips for jobs to do in the garden in the coming month.

Queen’s Honour for Ian

Plymouth’s Ian Sherriff, a leading figure in dementia care and research, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Ian, who is Academic Partnership lead for dementia at the University of Plymouth and Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society, received the award for services to people affected by dementia.

His commitment to campaigning for people who might not otherwise have a voice has been recognised around the world, most recently in Japan where he was invited as a keynote speaker to the Osaka National Dementia Conference. The Japanese delegation said he ‘lit the heart of Japan for dementia’ – and his impact has resonated in local, regional and national communities.

Locally, Ian’s work has helped Plymouth to become the first dementia friendly community in the UK. He was integral in setting up the Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance (PDAA), of which he is currently Chair, enabling a citywide approach to dementia awareness.

He delivers dementia awareness sessions to healthcare professionals and students, and at organisations including the BBC, Plymouth City Tuesdays Tai Chi for beginners and improvers. 10am - 11am and 11.15am - 12.15pm. £4.

Two hundred young people from Plymouth, England and Plymouth USA will come together for a concert at Plymouth Guildhall in July.

As a result of the first concert in 2015, The Legacy Choir was formed to enable young people to sing together once they moved to secondary school regardless of what school they attend.

The choir has been a huge success and now has over 40 members from 12 schools in the city. The last UK concert in 2017 resulted in a standing ovation by a full house of 700.

Plymouth International Chorus 2019 takes place on Wednesday July 10 at 6.30pm and is the latest collaboration between Plymouth Music Education Hub and the Plymouth Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts Department, Mass, USA to bring young people together in song in the lead up to Mayflower 400.

The project is now in its fifth year and sees young people aged between 10 and 14 singing together - odd years in the UK and even years in

People of varying ages are now picking up knitting needles and are all most welcome to come and join this group, which hand-produce and send knitted goods such as jumpers, blankets and hats for poor children in two areas of Romania and are sometimes asked to produce adult hats for Shekinah Mission, asylum seekers and refugees. One of the members makes cardigans, hats and small blankets for the Neo-natal Unit at Derriford Hospital. It doesn’t matter if you have been knitting for years, or have never seen a ball of wool before - the group will openly welcome you and share their knowledge and skills! Laira Youth Band (Thursdays 7.15pm). The Laira Youth Brass Band started in 1972 from the members of the Sunday school at Laira Congregational Church, it has performed hundreds of concerts over the years, in every corner of the City and beyond. Scores of children have passed through its ranks. Most were taught to read music and to play their instrument whilst in the Band, and many have continued their musical hobby into adult life, some choosing a professional career in music. Former coxswain Suzanne Sparrow’s proud moment

Marking the 75th Anniversary of D Day in Devonport Naval Base, Commodore Peter Coulson the Naval Base Commander invited a very special guest to lay a wreath at the Boscawen Memorial in HMS Drake, along with the youngest Naval Rating on the Base.

Suzanne Sparrow who served in the WRNS during WW2 was one of the first females to become a small boats coxswain. She joined in 1942 at 17 and at her interview was asked what category she would like to serve with. Suzanne said ‘boat’s crew’ and passed her examination as a coxswain.

“We were trained as seamen, learning all about knots and drill in HMS Drake,” said Suzanne. “It was really exciting. I was working out of Flag Staff steps in the Dockyard before moving around to Saltash Passage near the Tamar Bridge, where the Landing Craft base was.”

There is a bus which stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. A Plymouth telecoms business has been praised for its support of the life-saving charity BASICS Devon.

The charity is experiencing an exciting stage of growth, launching their own telephone line so that supporters and their communities can reach them directly and with ease.

The new telephone service has been made possible by Tamar Telecommunications and enables all enquiries to be handled efficiently and professionally. It enables local people to connect and contact the charity for all information including fundraising, volunteering or education and training opportunities.

BASICS Devon are keen to help reduce emergency response times and are dedicated to being there anytime, anywhere in Devon to help ease pain and suffering in an emergency situation and to save lives across Devon, especially in their rural communities.

Last year BASICS Devon volunteer doctors responded to 422 emergency call outs across Devon and its surrounding areas, some of which are hard to reach rural incidents.

Students in running for top photographic award Four students from Plymouth are in the running to win the nation’s most prestigious student photography awards, as the shortlist has just been announced.

Dartmoor Rambling Club The Dartmoor Rambling Club is a long established Rambling Club based in Plymouth. We have a regular programme of walks on alternate Wednesdays and at some weekends. Wednesday walks are usually about 8 to 10 miles on Dartmoor or on the coast and are taken at a pace to suit the participants. Fiona’s colourful collaboration Stagecoach South West, the Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth, has announced a unique collaboration with author and illustrator Fiona Lumbers to create one of the special Elmer trail sculptures.

Set to be the biggest family friendly public art event in the region this summer, the sculpture trail, which takes place across Plymouth and surrounding areas, is inspired by the muchloved children’s character of Elmer the Elephant, created by Devon born artist and author David McKee. The colourful parade of 40 unique elephants is tipped to attract 250,000 visitors, raising vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth who provide care and support for people with a life-limiting illness and their families across Plymouth, South West Devon and South East Cornwall.

The Stagecoach Elmer is being designed by Fiona Lumbers, a popular children’s illustrator and the author of children’s book ‘Clem and Crab’, published by Anderson Press.

Fiona said: “I’m so excited to be involved with Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth and to be supporting the work of St. Luke’s. It’s a real honour to be collaborating with Stagecoach South West on this project. My Elmer will feature the characters from my book ‘Clem and Crab’.

Apprentice Rose-Marie celebrates An apprentice at a Plymstock surgery is celebrating after achieving a top rating in a key assessment.

Rose-Marie Marsh, 27, achieved a distinction in her business administration apprenticeship End Point Assessment, while training at Skills Group and working at Church View Surgery in Plymstock.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) is a brand new rigorous testing process forming part of the apprenticeship reforms that are being rolled out nationally. The EPA and Apprenticeship Standard replace Frameworks, and are designed to develop and test the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in the profession.

Rose-Marie, who lives in Beacon Park, said: “I wanted to pursue a career in the health care industry as it is very rewarding being able to help people. In my previous employment I always preferred the business and administrative roles.

“The opportunity to complete my business administration apprenticeship at the surgery was a perfect fit for me. I am very proud that I achieved a distinction and the result has boosted my selfconfidence in my abilities to perform well.”

For the Level 3 business administrator apprenticeship, Rose-Marie had to complete workbased assignments and run her own project. For this, she chose to create a monthly staff newsletter with the aim of improving internal communication and boosting morale with good news stories.

Rose-Marie also had to plan and hold her own meetings, including video conferencing, and take part in recorded verbal discussions and observations.

Chloe Fenner-Smith, operations manager at Church View Surgery, said: “Rose-Marie has done extremely well gaining her distinction whilst successfully learning many of the aspects of surgery administrative roles.

“This has enabled Rose-Marie to be multi skilled within the surgery and also now have a nationally recognised qualification behind her. We are all very proud of the achievement Rose-Marie has accomplished, well done!”

Rose-Marie started her apprenticeship in January 2018 and has now been offered a permanent position at Church View Surgery as a medical administrator.

She said: “I am delighted to have been offered a position at the surgery and look forward to my future career here. I would like to build on my experience and hopefully move up into more senior positions. Thank you to Skills Group for such a wonderful opportunity and I hope to progress onto my Level 4 business administration

qualification.”

Tasty reward for these dedicated young readers A group of students from Plympton Academy were treated to afternoon tea recently to celebrate their commitment to reading.

The students have been using the Accelerated Reader programme which tracks and monitors their reading and comprehension skills. The software programme showed that some students had read more than one million words.

“It is very impressive how committed these students are to their reading and I felt this needed to be recognised and celebrated with a special treat,” said school librarian, Julie McGlinchey.

Year 8 student Eloise Trevor said: “It was nice to be recognised for my reading and I hope I get invited again next year! I am currently reading A Wrinkle In Time and it is really good.”

Olivia swops classroom for day on tanker

A 15 year old Plympton Academy student swapped a day in the classroom for a trip on a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker.

Olivia Richardson spent the day on RFA Tidesurge which is part of the Military Afloat Reach & Sustainability Tankers fleet. The 39,000-tonne tankers can carry up to 19,000 cubic meters of fuel and 1,400 cubic metres of fresh water in support of Royal Navy operations all over the world.

In addition to their supply duties in support of the Royal Navy, the vessels will also be able to undertake a wide range of maritime operations, such as constabulary patrols policing shipping lanes, humanitarian relief, as well as providing support to NATO and coalition allies.

The Year 10 student was offered the visit following a careers event at Plymouth Pavilions where she impressed staff due to her passion for all things nautical.

“I had a really great time,” said Olivia, who is part of the Plymouth Youth Sailing Club. “I met the captain and was given a rare coin for all my hard work on the day.”

Olivia, who is keen to pursue a nautical career, has a long list of qualifications that she hopes will help her achieve her ambitions. These include the One Star British Canoeing Award, being part of the crew of the Island Trust Sailing Vessel Pegasus covering 78 Nautical Miles, the RYA youth sailing scheme Stage 2 award and is now working on her stage 3 award.

She is also completing a Level 2 power boat award with the RYA powerboat scheme.

“Everyone at Plympton Academy is so proud of Olivia’s achievements both in school and in her own time,” said Jim Strachan, Head of Year 10.
