Sherford Life By Revd Tom Brassil

What causes you to celebrate wildly? Perhaps you’ve been following the build-up to the Royal Wedding avidly, and you enjoyed being part of the big day in some way with Harry and Meghan.

Or maybe you’re more of an FA Cup type, having eagerly glued yourself to the action in successive knock-out rounds over the past few months all leading up to the final. Whichever you are, hopefully you had some fun on Saturday May 19! Both these big national events have a way of bringing people together, and that was definitely evident in the new community of Sherford. Did you come along to the inaugural Street Party? Great fun had by young and old alike, from all sorts of backgrounds. Or perhaps you joined party-goers at another Royal Wedding party elsewhere in Plymouth, or at a screening of the titanic clash between sporting giants Chelsea and Manchester United. Whatever you did, I hope you were able to find a bit of joy and happiness at being part of one or other (or both) of those great events. What is it about something like a Royal Wedding that captures our minds and hearts? Perhaps it’s this: even in this day and age where so many marriages end in separation and heartbreak, we all want to believe in the possibility of true and permanent love. And what is it about something like an FA Cup final that fires us up? Maybe that we want to be part of something great and glorious! The other day I re-read the story of a wedding celebration that took place two millennia ago, but almost ended in disaster: the wine ran out! Fortunately for the bride and groom that day, one of the party guests went by the name of Jesus, and he did something quite spectacular, turning upwards of 500 litres of water into the most amazing wine anyone had ever tasted. Harry and Meghan’s wedding is estimated to cost about £32 million, possibly including £26,000 just on sausage rolls! But I expect that it had neither the quantity nor indeed the quality of the wine at this wedding 2000 years ago. Jesus did it not just to save the wedding but to show that there was something even greater available than true love shared between two people. What was on offer then, and is still on offer today, is nothing less than the full and everlasting love of God. There’s more: in taking hold of that love we find ourselves being part of something even greater and more glorious than our team lifting the FA Cup. We are offered a share in everlasting glory! So enjoy these little glimpses of happiness and glory like on that wonderful Saturday, but don’t just be satisfied with them, because even better is on offer! If you have any questions about Sherford life, or if you would like to talk more about finding lasting happiness, please contact me at tom@ sherfordchurch.net

Luke and Jess have their dream home - thanks to Help to Buy

Local couple, Jess and Luke Mitchell bought their first home at Linden Homes’ Sherford development by using the Help to Buy scheme.

Luke, 29, is a postman and his wife Jess, 28, works at Ladybirds Day Nursery in Brixton. They moved to a new three bedroom house at Sherford in August, just after their wedding. Speaking about their experience, Luke said: “We’d been renting a three bedroom house in Plymstock for two years and hadn’t even thought about buying our own home, it seemed like a long way off. “One day we decided to have a look around Sherford, just to see how it was taking shape. We loved the homes, they were full of character but we assumed they’d be out of our price range. When we were admiring one house, Tom the sales executive said ‘this could be yours’ and it really made us think. “We spoke to New Homes Mortgage Helpline and the sales team, who let us know that we could afford to move and then introduced us to the Help to Buy scheme. Our family helped us with the five per cent deposit and the rest happened very quickly. We find it amazing that we own a bigger house than we rented, yet pay £200 less per month – it’s unbelievable!” Jess added: “Ever since I was little I’ve had a dream home in my mind – a red brick house with a chimney, a red door and a front garden. As soon as I saw our house, I completely fell in love with it – and it even ticked every item from the list! It has a lovely cottagey-feel but it’s so big and gives us plenty of room to grow. “We loved the look of older style properties but we didn’t have the time to do all the work involved and wanted that fresh finish. The homes at Sherford suited us perfectly so it really does feel like we have the best of both worlds. “The staff at Linden Homes were excellent and provided us with lots of reassurance and held our hands throughout the process. When I heard that the sales team were looking for

Jess and Luke Mitchell

an extra pair of hands, I recommended my sister who’s in property and she now works there too! We love the community spirit at Sherford, our neighbours are lovely and we feel very lucky to be part of it.” Brian Deacon, sales and marketing director at Linden Homes, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that local couple, Luke and Jess have been able to buy their first home at Sherford using Help to Buy. “Sherford is such a community and it’s great to see the new town grow in size with more residents, homes and even the new school which is well on its way.” Created as part of a consortium, Sherford will see 5,500 classically designed homes built as part of an exciting new town. Nestled in the South Hams, with easy access to Plymouth, the new town will incorporate high quality homes with a host of amenities, including a market square, schools, shops,

a leisure centre, plus woodland and wildlife habitats. Currently available at Sherford is a collection of two, three, four and five bedroom homes, ranging in price from £200,000 to £379,950. Linden Homes is offering initiatives like Part Exchange and Help to Buy to help homebuyers move. Designed to assist first time buyers and existing homeowners, Help to Buy is a government backed scheme that applies to any new build property up to the value of £600,000. It enables homebuyers to purchase a new home with just five per cent deposit and a 20 per cent Government loan but still own 100 per cent of the property. For more details visit the sales and marketing suite, open daily from 10am to 5pm, off Haye Road, near Plymouth, PL9 8AR, call 01752 526561 or see the website at www.lindenhomes.co.uk

Help to Buy also helped Chloe and Josh Chloe Bradley and Josh Ackland became the were really helpful and told us to just pop in first residents on their street at Sherford at if we were unsure about something. “Help to Buy wasn’t stressful, it was the end of November last year. Since moving into their three bedroom home, the couple have been joined by several other families and are enjoying life in this ever growing community at Sherford. Previously based in a rented flat in Plympton, Chloe and Josh were looking to upsize, but they never imagined that a three storey townhouse would be within their reach. Chloe said: “I can’t believe that we’ve gone from renting a flat to living in a three storey townhouse, we still look around and think is this our home? It didn’t feel real at first, we’d always liked the idea of a new build but we didn’t think we’d be able to get a home like this, it’s just incredible. ” “There are so many gorgeous features to the property. We have the whole of the top floor as our bedroom and en-suite, and there are no box rooms - all the bedrooms are huge. “One of my favourite spots is the lounge, it’s so warm because the sun beams in everyday. We never thought that this would be the kind of house that we’d go for but we absolutely love it. With such busy lifestyles, Josh is a chef and I’m a host manager at a local hotel, we’re always in and out so we wanted something that would be ready and waiting, and we’ve been lucky enough to get exactly that. “I’m so grateful that we’ve been able to cut out all the fuss you get with an old house. In fact, we couldn’t believe how easy it was; we used Help to Buy and the sales executives

quite the opposite, and only needing a 5% deposit made our move possible. The whole process was much faster than expected; we came back from our holiday and the Sales Executives told us we could have the keys straight away.” While enjoying life in their home, Josh and Chloe are excited about their future at Sherford, as Chloe added: “For a young couple who want a family, Sherford is perfect

because you can plan for the future. “We can see the town developing and it’s brilliant to watch the school that our children will go to being built. It’s reassuring to know that we’ll have everything we need, I can honestly say that we could live here forever.” To find out more about the homes available at Sherford visit the sales information centre at the development or call 01752 967833 to speak to one of the sales executives. More information about this, and other developments within the region, is available at www.taylorwimpey.co.uk. Chloe Bradley and Josh Ackland

Midsummer Festival is one of the year’s big highlights for Plympton St Maurice It’s a testimony to community spirit that an annual event can be so successful year in, year out. That community spirit belongs to Plympton St Maurice and the event is ‘The Midsummer Festival’.

Every year the event gets bigger and better, and every year sees new faces help in the organisation of the Festival as youngsters from the village volunteer to keep the traditional celebrations going. This year the Festival is being held from Friday June 15 to Sunday June 17. James Heesem, 25 is one of the upcoming organisers of the event. “The Midsummer Festival is one of my earliest memories,” said James, who lives in the village. “Now I’ve been given the opportunity to work alongside Duncan and Paddy Bray who have run the event successfully for many years and have been its mainstay. It’s important that the event carries on for future generations to enjoy and between us we hope it will.” James and the other younger members of the Midsummer Committee are happy to follow the successful formula of the ageold celebration and this year will be no exception. The weekend starts off on a high note with the Joshua Reynolds choir performing on Friday night at 7.30pm at St Maurice church. They’re performing “100 Years of Music” which includes many popular tunes. Tickets £5 on the door and includes a glass of wine. Hele’s School Samba Band

The Lamb Feast kicks off on Saturday June 16 at noon with a procession of glorious classic cars winding their way through the village to the Castle Green. The local Stannator and his Youth Ambassador will be in the lead car and the vehicles can be admired throughout the afternoon. Succulent lamb baps are one of the attractions enjoyed by many. And there’s all the fun of the fair for the entire family – including the dog! Each year the dog show is well supported with pooches of all makes strutting their stuff, trying to catch the judge’s eye. Martial arts expert and teacher Andy Cooper will be demonstrating a variety of skills including self-defence with pupils from his classes held at the Plympton Guildhall. Football your thing? then try your skills on the football speed machine - one of the many activities available. Youngsters will enjoy the swing boats, face painting and bouncy castle, candy floss and yummy Devon ice cream. Wander round the many stalls selling everything from plants to cakes then rest your legs in the tea tent and listen to the steel and brass bands or watch the Susan Jane School of Dancing as one of the arena events. Pulling all this together will be no problem for event compere John Govier. John, a former BBC Radio Devon presenter now runs The Brook Inn pub in the village and is happy to volunteer for the role. “St Maurice is a great community” he said “and I’m glad to be part of it.”

Youngsters from the Susan Jane School of Dancing performing at the festival last year

Over the weekend the Plympton Painting Group will be exhibiting art in the Plympton Guildhall. And keen gardeners are out in droves on Sunday June 17. For many the jewel in the Festival crown is ‘The Hidden Gardens of St Maurice’ when gardeners visit from far and wide to explore the beautiful gardens tucked behind the façade of the ancient houses.

“It’s more than just enjoying the gardens” said organiser Freddie Mills. “The event gives everyone the chance to see the fascinating history that is still hidden in the village today.” Gardens open at 2pm; tickets cost £5, children free. Ukelele players and cream teas in the church all add up to the lovely afternoon. It’s definitely a weekend not to be missed. Ancient Plympton St Maurice fire engine

A teacher at Hele’s School in Plympton is fundraising for her granddaughter who lives thousands of miles away.

Music teacher Jane Lee was due to visit New Zealand last July to see her son Tom and baby granddaughter, whose nickname is Elsie Bells. Jane was looking forward to the trip of a lifetime - but when she arrived her tearful son Tom told her that Elsie didn’t have mumps as was first thought, but had a rare form of child cancer called Neuroblastoma. The cancer had spread throughout her body and she was diagnosed with stage 4. New Zealand is a beautiful place and Jane managed to see some of it, but most of her time was spent in the CHOC (Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre) ward at Christchurch hospital. Elsie was 10 months old at the time and during the past year she has undergone chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, an operation to remove the main tumour and is now currently going through immunotherapy

treatment. She is an amazing little girl with amazing parents and she has responded well to treatment. During this time Elsie’s parents have had to put work on hold to spend precious time with their daughter and a fund-raising page was set up in New Zealand to help support Elsie and her family. On Jane’s return home and back to work she knew she had to start to fundraise in order to help her family thousands of miles away. She started to raise money through selling her and her husband’s artwork in the staff room at Hele’s School where Jane works. Jane explained: “Team Hele’s certainly came through for me and were incredibly supportive and generous! Not only the staff but Year 7 students put on a talent show to raise money for Elsie and what a talented lot

Plympton pub to tackle loneliness in the community with TLC events

The Brook Inn at Plympton St Maurice is introducing a new weekly get-together for people in the local area who live alone, are feeling lonely or simply would like to meet more people. Called TLC Thursdays, they take place at The Brook Inn on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm and 4.30pm and were launched on May 17. TLC - which stands for Tea, Laughter and Company – was inspired when landlord John Govier was watching a TV programme about loneliness. He said: “We’ve always aimed to position The Brook Inn at the heart of the community. We already host lots of activities like Tai Chi lessons, watercolour art classes, lots of live music and even line dancing nights - and in the four years we’ve been at the pub our staff and customers have raised over £10,000 for local charities too - but I got to thinking that we haven’t really done anything to give a reason for people who live alone - or who are feeling lonely - to get out and mingle.” John posted the idea on the pub’s Facebook page and asked his customers to come up with a name for the event. “One of our regulars, Glenis Gibbs, came up with what we thought would make a catchy title - TLC (standing for Tea, Laughter and Company) and so we went ahead and had a logo made by another of our customers, Peggy Melmoth.” The idea has captured the imagination of other customers too and John has been inundated with messages from people who want to offer their help. “I’ve had musicians offering to provide sing-alongs, South West MP Gary Streeter is going to do a Q+A session on May 24, a local historian has offered to give a talk, some local WI members have said they’ll maybe bake some cakes and Rev Robert Harris the local rector has offered to help in a variety of ways too,” said John. “Pubs have historically always been the hub of the local community and this is as important today as it’s ever been.” For more information call John Govier on 01752 297604.

Clyde, the St Bernard, rescued by Woodside after having three homes in less than a year

Plymouth animal charity warning on growing social media pet trade A growing trade in animals on social media is fuelling a worrying rise in the number of dogs being passed from home to home before being rescued by a Plymouth charity.

Woodside Animal Welfare Sanctuary is taking in an increasing number of animals, particularly dogs, who have been sold on social media and online selling sites to buyers who have no clear idea what they are taking. Some of these dogs are being rehomed multiple times and, in some cases, moved around the country, causing them unnecessary distress, before they are rescued by the sanctuary at Elfordleigh. Sanctuary manager Helen LeCointe said: “People buy a dog through online selling sites, it doesn’t suit them and back online the dog goes to be sold again. It wouldn’t surprise

me if some dogs have had as many as 10 homes. “People buy them on impulse off sites like Gumtree. There is no back-up if there are any problems. A dog might be described as ‘good with children’ when it actually isn’t. The dog could have health problems, which you won’t find out about until later, or might be aggressive. “For the animal it is really unsettling and they can end up being dysfunctional as they are passed from one home with one set of rules and another home with another set of rules.” Helen is also concerned about some animals being traded for profit, and even dog fighting. “You are leaving yourself open to people who might be buying a dog simply to try and make a profit, we have even heard of dogs being used for dog fighting,” she said. Among the dogs rescued by Woodside is Clyde the St Bernard who, at just 10 months old, has already had three homes, two of which were found through internet selling sites such as Gumtree and Preloved. The charity has also been caring for a Staffordshire Terrier puppy sold in this way. Assistant manager Dawn Cornish said: “Very often dogs sold on these sites end up here. Both the staff pup and St Bernard were bought on an internet selling site. We are grateful that these owners contacted us for help, rather than putting the dogs back online. “By bringing them to us, we can find them the correct home and stop them going back and forth to different homes.” If potential owners insist on buying pets through social media and online sites, Dawn urged them to first look into the animal’s history and breed type. “If you are going to buy through these sites, you need to look at the history of the dog and how long it’s been in its current home, and also into the breed of the dog,” she said, “otherwise you might not be getting what you think.” For more information, please call Woodside on 01752 337552, visit www.woodsidesanctuary. org.uk or find the charity on Facebook.

No Stamp Duty for First Time Buyers? Stamp duty has now been abolished for most first time buyers in England and Northern Ireland. In the Budget on 22 November 2017, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced a relief from stamp duty land tax (SDLT) for first time buyers. This relief was applied with immediate effect for all purchases on or after 22 November 2017. First time buyers buying their first home for £300,000 or less will pay no SDLT. Where the purchase price is over £300,000 but does not exceed £500,000 they will pay 5% on the amount above £300,000. The relief applies when buying a single dwelling for no more than £500,000. The buyers must be individuals, not a company, and each of them needs to be classed as a first time buyer. They must intend to occupy the property as their only or main residence and not be buying the property as a second home or

buy to let. The purchase must also not be linked to any other purchase. The only exceptions to this are the purchase of land that forms part of the gardens or is for the benefit of the property or gardens. In order to be classed as a first time buyer you must not either alone or with others have previously acquired a major interest in a property or in land situated anywhere in the World. This includes previous acquisitions by inheritance or gift, or by a financial institution on behalf of a person under an alternative finance scheme. Relief is still available if you have previously acquired a property as a trustee unless you were also a beneficiary of the trust. It is also available if you own or have owned a non-residential or mixed use property as long as this didn’t include a residential dwelling. This restriction does not apply where the

interest acquired was the grant or assignment of a lease with less than 21 years to run. If the property is being purchased jointly then all buyers must meet the conditions of first time buyers. For example, you would not be entitled to first time buyers relief if your partner or spouse has previously owned a property even if you have not. There is no age limit on claiming the relief; you can be any age as long as you are a first time buyer. The relief is claimed by your conveyancer when they complete the SDLT return which they will submit on completion of the purchase. Any first time buyers that purchased their property before 22 November 2017 unfortunately cannot claim a refund for the stamp duty that they have already paid. Relief is not available if the purchase is of an additional property, in this

case the higher rate of SDLT needs to be paid. For purchases of additional properties the nil rate band does not also apply. If you would like to discuss stamp duty or have any other conveyancing queries, please contact Becky Bromfield at Howard and Over Solicitors on 01752 284063 or by email at becky.bromfield@howardover.co.uk

Riding as part of a group is a great way to get active in the great outdoors and British Cycling has come up with a programme designed to encourage women to do just that.

Breeze was created in 2011 to encourage women to get fit and have fun on their bikes. So far it has attracted more than 130,000 riders. The initiative gives women the chance to either discover or re-discover a love of cycling by taking part in local, sociable and fun guided rides, all led by women for women. The rides are led by volunteer Breeze champions who organise fun, social bike rides in their local area for women to take part in. Breeze offers free, year-round women-only led social rides run by volunteers, aimed at a range of abilities from beginner upwards, with a focus on enjoyment. Whether you’re a lapsed cyclist, you want to improve your on-bike confidence, increase your miles, take on a challenge, or just have a laugh with other like-minded people in your area, there’s sure to be a ride for you. Sue Jennings, a local Breeze Champion in Plymouth, leads a number of free rides for women every week. When Sue retired at the age of 64 she took the opportunity to get back on her bike. One day, on one of her trips up the Plymbridge Trail she saw an advert to become a

volunteer Ride Leader and decided that this would give her something to do. She wasn’t wrong, and since then has led almost 250 rides, helping others to keep active and boosting her own health and wellbeing whilst doing so. Sue said: “My own level of cycling has improved tremendously and I have been doing cycle touring holidays. The people who regularly come on my rides have gained confidence in their cycling and some ride to work whilst others take part in cycling events and holidays.” Her passion to get women back on their bikes is infectious and at the age of 71, Sue proves that age really is no barrier, still regularly leading two rides each week. Sue has become a real advocate for women’s cycling in the city, working as a Sustrans volunteer ranger and as co-chair of the Plymouth Cycling Campaign. Luckily for Sue, she doesn’t work alone; there is a whole army of Breeze Champions who put on free rides almost every day of the week, so there really is something for everyone. Booking is essential and details of all rides can be found on www.letsride.co.uk . If you would like more information please contact Plymouth City Councils Sports Development Unit on sportsdev@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 307008. Kingfisher flying the flag for Norway Multi-award winning Plympton chippy, Kingfisher, was chosen to fly the flag for Norwegian seafood at the country’s annual celebratory Norway Day event in London.

Owners Craig Maw and Nikki Mutton made the 200 mile journey to Southwark Park in their special event catering van, Kingfisher on the Go. Invited by the Norwegian Seafood Council, the duo catered for up to 5,000 guests, serving up sustainable Norwegian line caught haddock and chips at a special price of just £5. As well as fantastic food, the Southwark Park festivities included live music, dancing, a parade and speeches. The annual event marks the Norwegian day of constitution and is celebrated in Norway and by Norwegian immigrant communities across the world. Craig said they were honoured to be asked to take part. “We were lucky enough to visit Norway last year. The fjords and landscape were crystal clear and beautiful. It’s

no wonder Norwegian seafood is some of the best in the world. More importantly, their cod and haddock is MSC certified so it’s sustainable and fully traceable, which is why we serve it at Kingfisher. We can’t wait to pitch up Kingfisher on the Go and add our own Devon-style twist to this fantastic celebration of all things Norwegian.” Hans Frode Kielland Asmyhr, UK director, Norwegian Seafood Council, added: “We are delighted that Kingfisher joined us to celebrate the Norway Day celebrations in Southwark Park. “The Brits’ love affair with fish and chips has helped make the UK the biggest market for cod and haddock in the world, with Norway playing a vital role in keeping cod and haddock a constant on chip shop menus.” To find out more about Kingfisher’s menu and ingredients, visit www.kingfisherfishandchips. co.uk and sign up to their newsletter or follow them at @KingfisherDevon and www.facebook.com/ kingfisherfishandchipsplymouth

Fine day for Plympton’s May Fair The weather stayed dry on Saturday May 12 much to the relief of organisers of Plympton’s May Fair which took place that day. The event was opened by Stannator Andrew Hill who arrived in a vintage motor car with his partner Charlotte Willis.

Inside Harewood House there were a variety of charity and voluntary group stalls as well as refreshments, with musician Andy Lewis playing and singing a variety of songs in the foyer. Outside there were further stalls, including games such as Hoopla, a police information and advice stall and an entertainment arena which was active throughout the day. The Plympton Academy Samba Band got the entertainment under way after the opening ceremony and other acts to entertain the crowds during the day included Colleen’s Offkey Singers and the Starlite School of Dance. A Zumba session got the crowds involved in some exercise

and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf gave a talk about their work. In the nearby Livewell Clinic Car Park the public were able to enjoy a static display of vintage cars and the Litas Ladies showed off their motorcycles and allowed adults and children to pose for pictures on them. Free taster tennis sessions were available on the tennis courts and a league match took place during the afternoon on the cricket pitch. At the end of the event Plympton Community Council chairman Rose Hamley presented a bouquet of flowers to Pauline Kadoche who was the leading force behind the organisational arrangements for the day and the one who ensured everything came together as it did. Stannator Andrew Hill said: “It was great to see such a large turnout and after the very rainy day we had the day before it was a big relief this had passed by the Saturday morning.” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast) Plympton Stannator Andrew Hill tries out one of the Litas Ladies’ motorcycles at the May Fair

Plympton’s local history week kicked off on May 14 with two entertaining historical presentations.

In the afternoon Steve Holly from the Dartmoor Tinworking Research Group gave a long talk entitled ‘Dartmoor Tin and the Plympton Stannary’. An audience of around 100 people packed into Harewood House to hear it. Those attending heard how in 1370 one in every 20 males in the population were involved in tin working in one way or another ranging from elite master tinners to casual labourers known as spalliards. In 1511 William Rede presented 34 ingots to be weighed and they totalled 3540 pounds,

the largest in the county. The meeting also heard that by the seventeenth century William Strode had become an important local tin magnet, dominating tin production in Plympton. In the evening local author Sylvia Guthrig staged a play at the Lutheran Church Hall about the history of Plympton in the presence of the Lord Mayor, Wendy Foster, and her consort, Councillor Ken Foster, and also the Lord Mayor’s Cadet, Flight Sargent Amber Platt. The play was performed by members of the Laughing Angels from the Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre at Derriford Hospital. Those watching the play learned among

other things that cider production was historically popular in Plympton and in 1763 the Prime Minister of the day, Lord Bute, became very unpopular when he proposed a four shillings per hogshead tax on cider, primarily as a means of funding the Seven Years War which had just ended. This led to uproar and Lord Bute eventually had to stand down. During the course of the evening Mrs Guthrig presented a selection of her books to the Lord Mayor as a thank you gift. After watching the play the Lord Mayor told the assembled audience: “I have learnt a great deal about Plympton, things I never knew.” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

Helping Hannahs make a difference

Hannahs Ivybridge are offering job opportunities for enthusiastic and motivated people to join their dedicated care team with two open days on June 1 and 2.

The full-time and part-time opportunities for support workers, nurses and healthcare assistants offer flexibility and exciting challenges. They will be working for one of the UK’s oldest charities, which is dedicated to empowering and providing young people with profound physical and learning disabilities with life–changing opportunities and advocating their needs. Support workers will have a varied role, encouraging, supporting and caring for the young people and helping them enjoy life to the full and achieve their dreams and aspirations. They will be helping them to take part in a variety of fun and exciting activities such as sensory music, arts and crafts, and social outings which include trips to the cinema, theatre and beach, bowling, football matches, festivals, sailing, retail therapy, and much more. Hannahs are also looking for motivated and professional registered nurses and healthcare assistants to join the new Clinical Support Team, which will provide additional clinical support and will complement the existing multi-disciplinary front line services. They will be working in Hannahwood, the adult services department, which operates over two separate CQC registered locations on a multi-purpose site, and in the residential children’s home. bombing, and also the founder of One World Strong. The topic of the video conference was ‘Responding to Hate’ and students from the Plympton based school hooked up with students from Cranford Community College, Hounslow and Harlem Renaissance High School in New York. The video conference began with Dave sharing his experience of the bombing at the end of the Boston marathon in 2013 and how this led him, and other survivors, to set up their charity One World Strong. Students were then able to ask Dave any question they wanted. These questions explored the emotional as well as physical trauma people suffer after terrorist attacks, how Dave keeps himself focused and balanced doing this sort of work, how organisations can work to prevent extremism as well as deal with the fallout from terrorist attacks, whether this has changed his views of issues such as gun ownership and whether terrorists deserve our condemnation or pity. In his responses, Dave stressed the importance of support networks, the power of narratives (especially as an antidote to extremist narratives and objectives), and he challenged the options of pity or condemnation, explaining he felt

it was a more complex matter. Students went on to share their own experiences of hate in their communities. They heard about the recent ‘Punish A Muslim Day’: a hateful online campaign, how one student had his mother attacked for being Muslim, about minority groups being ‘second checked’, and finding it hard to secure employment. Towards the end of the conference students explored together the tensions between free speech and hate speech and the responsibilities of the media to report good stories as well as the negative. Emma Crosley, Religious Studies teacher at Hele’s commented “We were delighted to be asked to take part in this video conference and I was humbled by listening to Dave’s experiences. It was invaluable for our students to listen to students from different cultures and cities to hear their experiences of hate crime where they live. Living in an area of the country that is less multi-cultural than most, it is essential for our students to understand the difficulties faced by other people and they showed real empathy and understanding in their responses.” For more information on the work of One World Strong see their website www.oneworldstrong.org/copy-of-our-story

The day was formally opened by Stannator of Plympton Andrew Hill and attended by Plympton’s Youth Ambassador Isaac Hudson. Among a number of informative displays were medics demonstrating resuscitation techniques, the fire service showing the use of their aerial platform and a talk by a police dog handler along with one of their dogs. There was also the chance for the public to experience some hands on activities such as using a fire hose and being winched up and down on a rope in a simulation of a rescue mission. For those interested in history the Friends of South West Police Heritage Trust had a stall with a number of items of memorabilia, including police staffs used in bygone years, different types of old police uniforms and different types of handcuffs used in the past. There was also a list showing the 30 smaller borough and city forces which over the years have merged into what is now Devon and Cornwall Police. There was a set of leg stocks which the Stannator found himself detained in for a while and also a replica of an old blue police box of the type which used to be used to contain phones to contact officers when out on the beat and in which prisoners could temporarily be detailed before a van came to collect them. The day was the brainchild of Plympton’s neighbourhood beat manager PC Greg Rendle and Plympton fire station’s watch manager Neil Willmott. PC Rendle spent a large part of the day in period custume, wearing an old police cape and sporting a whistle and carrying a truncheon. As well as showcasing the work of the emergency services the event acted as a fundraiser to raise money towards the cost of providing a defibrillator for Plympton Ridgeway as well supporting Prostate Cancer UK and the Firefighters’ Charity. The event massively surpassed the expectations of the organisers. PC Rendle said he was ‘overwhelmed’ by the extent of public support and added: “It was great to see all the different emergency services engage with our local community like I have never seen before.” Postings on Plympton Police’s Facebook page after the event highlighted the success of the day. Charlotte Handforth posted: “Thank you all so much for such an incredible day! My six year old is a very shy boy and doesn’t like loud noises, but this really helped him today! He absolutely loved it! “ Ginny Kathleen added: “A brilliant day, my daughter loved it and it was great to see such a lovely community atmosphere.” Matt Jackson commented: “This day was brilliant, my youngest son didn’t want to leave.” Fire service watch manager Neil Willmott said: “Wow what a fantastic Open Day!! Thanks for all the support from everyone who came along today. I have been told this needs to happen every year now!!” There is an interview with Brian Edmunds from the Friends of South West Police Heritage Trust online in the June edition of the Plympton Podcast in which he talks about the work of the Trust and some of the items which were on display at the Blue Light Day.

Elburton Primary School celebrates 50 years with Jubilee Playground plan When Elburton Primary School first opened in 1968 there were 240 pupils. Now, 50 years later the school has 420 pupils aged between four and eleven and there are still only the same two small playgrounds.

As a result, the school and PTA are launching a Crowdfunder Juubilee Playground campaign on Monday June 11 for parents and pupils, past and present, grandparents and the community to donate to the cause. The Crowdfunder appeal is part of wider fund-raising to secure a total of £35,000. From the launch of the appeal the PTA will have five weeks to hit their target, so they are asking people to visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk and search for Elburton Primary School. Pledges of specified amounts will receive a special ‘Thank you reward.’ The school is in the process of replacing the classroom huts which have been used for over 40 years, but there are no funds to extend the outdoor space. It is cost effective to add the playground at this time given the nature of the groundworks. The current playground areas and outside space are used to host fairs and events that are open to the wider community. The school’s PTA organises a circus every two years, as well as Christmas and Summer Fairs, which are open to all. The Headmaster David Bradford playgrounds are also used by after school clubs and other organisations. The children are involved in designing their ideal Jubilee playground. On Friday June 15 Elburton Primary School will be hosting its 50th Anniversary Summer Fair and invites parents and past pupils and staff from 1.45pm onwards to look around the school and the new classrooms with the fair starting at 3.15pm The headteacher of the school, David Bradford, is retiring from his post in July, but will continue in his position as the chief executive of the Horizon Multi Academy Trust which includes Elburton Primary School. It was David’s vision to improve the learning and outdoor facilities for the children that inspired this project. He said: “After 21 years as the headteacher at Elburton Primary I have witnessed some minor changes to the outdoor space for our pupils, but we have never gained any more physical space for the sports activities our children would like to take part in during their lunch and breaktimes. “When I got the position of headteacher at Elburton Primary I thought of Elburton as a suburb of Plymouth, but it really is so much more than that. Elburton is its own community with the school really as a hub of the village. This Jubilee Playground will not only be incredibly valuable for the children and staff alike, it will also be able to be used by the local community groups.” Laura Wills, chair of the Elburton Primary PTA said: “We know that our current project is ambitious, but it will be a great way to mark the 50th Anniversary of the school. We are raising money to make this idea a reality. “We want to give our children more space

Support for veterans, staffed by veterans The Veterans Care Navigation Service, run by Improving Lives Plymouth, provides support for those who have left the military - recently or many years ago - to choose and access services that best meet their needs. The staff and volunteers are themselves veterans, and the team is headed up by Bill Jennings and Jo Brokenshire, both ex-Royal Navy.

Jo Brokenshire

Jo served for 17 years, until she was medically discharged in 2015. She had injured her shoulder coming down a ship’s ladder and in spite of treatment did not recover enough for service. “I left the Navy on good terms,” says Jo, “but after my final medical board, when I was told I would be discharged, the support I had received from the Navy just stopped. At first I didn’t know where to go for help.” This is something Jo finds that many veterans encounter. “ They have lived in a routine for years where most things are provided. Many of them simply don’t know how to find what’s available to help them, or even that there is help available in the first place.” Jo was fortunate in that she was supported by her husband, also in the Navy, and she was able to adjust to civilian life more easily. She saw her current role advertised on Facebook, and although she did not need a job, she applied and was successful at interview. “I wanted to do something to help other veterans to get the help they need. I’d found support myself but so many people just don’t know where to start; I wanted to be part of making that better.” Many ex-service personnel face additional barriers to getting help. “Lots of them don’t

Story by Ian Pilkington

see themselves as veterans, which they are. And they don’t like to ask for help, they think it’s for someone worse off than them, which it isn’t – there’s help for anyone who has left the services. “We open their eyes to things that are available, we give them their options and support them to get going,” says Jo. “People don’t like coming into an office sometimes, so we’ll meet them at home, or out for a coffee. I spend a lot of time at Costa. Rather than a formal interview, we just talk, and in the course of that we generally find out what people are struggling with. “From there, we can point them in the right direction and support them as they work it through.” Veterans Care Navigation helps people to identify what their needs are, and gives them information so that they can choose for themselves what help they access. The team can refer to a range of specialist

support organisations, and they can advise on issues like benefits and grants for essential items and home adaptations. If you are a recent leaver or have been out of the military for some time you can contact them to get the support you need. The support available includes: • Information, advice and signposting for veterans and their dependants. • Support for veterans and their dependants to navigate and choose services that best meet their needs. • Work with partner organisations to deliver the required support. • Assessments of need and support plans developed with you. • Outreach work in various community settings. Veterans Care Navigation Service is at Ernest English House, Buckwell Street, PL1 2DA, and there is a drop-in service Monday – Friday. Building bridges to STEM careers Teams of Plymouth school children were keeping everyone in ‘suspense’ as they competed against the clock to construct a 12-metre-long suspension bridge.

Over 90 pupils from across the city took part in the ‘Bridges to Schools’ project held at City College Plymouth. Schools involved included Plymstock School and Plympton Academy. The young people had to work together to build a structurally stable cable-stayed bridge in under an hour. Students were challenged to design, create, solve and innovate to successfully complete the task. Louise Daniel from the Institution of Civil Engineers said: “This project is more than simply learning about bridges and engineering, it helps students to experience and appreciate the many industry roles found in civil engineering - from project managers to fixers. “Workshops like these highlight the importance of working as a team; it shows how to take on responsibility and enables students to understand the importance of seeing a project through to its final outcome. It has been fantastic to work with City College Plymouth to engage young people and encourage an interest in civil engineering.” Andy Robinson, STEM hub officer at City College said: “This event has been a great success, with all of the groups completing the bridge and working effectively in teams. As a STEM professional, it is great to involve young people in: learning about the science behind the materials, working out the maths by counting, calculating, and estimating; the use

It’s all ‘About the Boy’ for this Hugh Grant

Like the characters played by his name sake, Hugh Grant is unlucky in love and as a result Gables Farm Dogs & Cats Home has been the home of this cheeky chap, a four and half year old collie, for over a year now. In that time he has become a firm favourite of all the staff and volunteers but is still looking for his fur-ever home. While he waits for that special family to come along he needs to be kept active so an 11 mile walk is needed! Along with his entourage dog behaviourist Jodie Harris and re-homer Kazzie Westlake, he walked 11 miles from Wadebridge to Padstow and back again recently (with a fish and chip lunch to keep up their strength). Hugh Grant and crew are hoping to raise as much money and awareness as possible for long term dogs in rescue and all money raised will go towards caring for these special dogs. A target of £580.80 has been set, as this is equivalent of 11 miles in feet, (58,080 ft) but anyone can sponsor individually per mile or in any way possible. Dog behaviourist Jodie Harris said: “Firstly we thought we needed a bit more positivity and fun after the long and miserable winter. Secondly, Hugh Grant has been with us for over a year now and we need to get his infectious smile out to the public. We never give up on our animals as we are a genuine non-euthanasia charity so love to come up with fun ways of finding them new loving homes”. of technology in the planning; and, obviously, engineering. “At the college, we are dedicated to engaging with the local community and always strive to inspire and encourage our future workforce. ‘Bridges to Schools’ is yet another excellent example of the positive activity that we can undertake to inspire and educate the next generation of STEM experts.” As 2018 is the Year of Engineering and marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE),

many events are taking place up and down the country to challenge stereotypes and raise awareness of the sector. ‘Bridges to Schools’ aims to promote the importance of STEM and careers in civil engineering. With 203,000 skilled recruits required each year until 2024 and a 56,000 annual shortfall of engineering graduates, there has never been a better time to find out about a career in engineering. Schools join the war on waste Every year 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced globally, with around 40% of that being singleuse plastics which often end up in our oceans and landfills, never decomposing and instead killing around 100,000 marine animals each year, writes Erin Downes.

If we continue at our current usage levels, it is predicted that by 2050 the amount of plastic in our oceans could outweigh the amount of fish, clearly posing a significant threat to our environment. After a range of national petitions, some areas are beginning to take this issue more seriously, with many national companies, such as Wetherspoon, Costa Coffee and Pizza Express pledging to stop using plastic straws by the end of 2018 and Iceland vowing to completely change to plastic-free packaging in the next five years to reduce single-use plastics. One of these petitions, shared on change. org as part of a school project by nine and ten year olds from Oxley Park Academy in Milton Keynes, is named ‘Straws Suck! Ban Single Use Straws Across the UK!’ and has reached over 108,000 signatures. Similarly, a petition from Joanna Betterton has gained

to reduce waste at the school. Karen Dixon, headteacher, said: “At Manor, we are all very enthusiastic about helping the environment. We all know that we have an individual responsibility, and that each of us making a few small changes can have a big impact - especially if everyone does their bit. Teaching children about caring for the environment is clearly crucial if we are going to protect our beautiful planet long into the future”. In order to put this idea into action, the school has introduced new policies concerning the packaging in school lunches, in which they encourage parents to use reusable pots and water bottles rather than single-use disposable water bottles (which are now banned) or packaging. They have also stopped providing children’s milk and juice in individual non-recyclable cartons, have stopped buying individual icecream and yoghurt pots for school dinners, and have also stopped using plastic straws or disposable cups altogether. A reduction in the amount of paper that is laminated has also contributed to their reduced waste plans. over 420,000 signatures asking all major supermarkets to stop using plastic packaging, aiding the fight against plastic pollution in our oceans.

Following in their footsteps, as part of their partnership with ‘Plastic Free Ivybridge’ and Surfers Against Sewage, Manor Primary School in Ivybridge have been working hard

Litter picks in Ivybridge

To ensure all children understand the effect that increased waste can have on our planet, the school are also launching a school-wide project named ‘Big Blue Planet’ throughout June. This project includes a range of activities, including writing to local councillors as well as local and national politicians to voice their concerns over the UK’s waste problem. They are also planning to visit local supermarkets to investigate the packaging used and write back to the stores with their findings, whilst also completing litter picks around Ivybridge. There will also be fun competition opportunities for students, including designing posters and leaflets and having a ‘package-free lunchbox’ competition. According to ‘Recycle Now’, an average secondary school will produce 22kg of waste per pupil every year, and your average primary school primary school will produce even more, at 45kg per pupil. In order to reduce these figures, Plymstock School have also put many measures into place, such as reducing the amount of laminating and using digital textbooks. To emphasise the environmental impact of printing in school, students are encouraged to only print if it is completely necessary to avoid extra waste, through the use of a programme called ‘papercut.com’ which outlines the amount of CO2 used, how much energy is used and even what percentage of a tree the printing has taken. However, one of the most substantial measures put into place has been a shift in the type of packaging used in school lunches, to reduce the use of non-recyclable singleuse plastics. In recent years, the school has stopped using plastic packaging and instead invested in ‘Vegware’, a company that provides more sustainable packaging options. Due to being plant-based and made from lowcarbon, renewable or recycled materials, the packaging can be composted easily alongside normal food waste, drastically reducing the amount of waste produced. Both of these projects are examples of easy ways in which we can reduce the issues we have caused through excess waste: Bring a re-usable bottle. Say no to plastic straws. Carry re-usable shopping bags. By taking these small and simple steps to reduce the amount of waste we produce, we can make a huge difference to our precious environment.

Plymstock School’s Lexie Devine raises awareness for Makaton At Plymstock School there are many students who undertake selfless tasks to help others, writes Erin Downes.

However, there is one student who has recently gone out of her way to help not only her brother, but also all of those who use Makaton sign language throughout Plymouth. Lexie Devine, who is currently in year 7 at Plymstock, recently created a video to share on social media embracing how fun Makaton can be. She emphasised the impact that learning Makaton has had on her communication skills, expressing how important communication is, whether verbal or not. The video, which shows Lexie with her brother, Jacob, enjoying ‘signing’ along to one of his favourite songs, ‘Count On Me’, quickly gained over 600 views and was shared by The Makaton Charity itself.

Over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs in their daily lives, however still very few people fully understand what it is. According to The Makaton Charity: “Makaton is a language programme that gives everyone a helping hand to talk.” It involves the use of symbols and signs alongside speech to help people communicate effectively, allowing people to connect with others, even if they may not be able to speak clearly or use traditional sign language. Often Makaton sign language allows people to communicate straight away using these signs and symbols, and then reduce how often they use these symbols once they begin to develop speech, however many people continually use Makaton throughout their lives. Despite no planning, and being filmed

by Lexie’s mum in the spur of the moment, it has helped to share a poignant message about Makaton and how we treat it in society. The stigma associated with it often makes it difficult for people to truly understand what it is and why it can be beneficial. However, even learning just a few different signs can show compassion to those who use Makaton and allow them to feel accepted, rather than ostracised within our communities. Plymstock Staff commended Lexie on creating a video that emphasised the fact that ‘not only is Makaton fun, but often part of everyday life at home, and the role that some siblings play as part of the life of a brother or sister who has additional needs. Lexie is a very mature, caring, and responsible person, who cares for her brother very much.’ Everyone at Plymstock School is very proud of her efforts.

Arts Centre build to rival top spot for largest theatre Since its original announcement early last year, Plymstock School’s new Art Centre build has been well along the way in the planning stages.

Despite a slow start, the major construction project has now been approved, after a meticulous planning and designing process. The final design has been agreed and it is expected that the tendering process to find contractors will begin soon. After the last eight months of planning, in which consultants from Vickery Holman and senior Plymstock School staff worked alongside the school’s drama specialists to design a space perfectly suited to the Arts, construction is soon to begin. The current plan is for construction to begin during the summer holidays in July, meaning that this exciting project could be complete by the end

of the year. Despite already having a Lecture Theatre and Hall available for performances, this new centre will allow for more flexibility in terms of its use. Not only will the new Arts Centre boast unique features, such as a sprung floor, suggested to greatly reduce injuries whilst allowing performers to work to the best of their ability, but it will also have an excellent sound system which will be easily adaptable for any future needs. It will also be the first of Plymstock School’s facilities with retractable seating, allowing the area to be more versatile in terms of the sorts of activities it can accommodate. This 450 seat Centre will allow for a larger performing arts centre for Plymstock School, however, due to its size, it is likely to be let out for community use, providing a fresh new facility for

Plymstock as a whole. Current plans have even suggested that this could become the largest performance space outside of the Theatre Royal and Plymouth Pavilions, hugely benefitting the school as well as the surrounding community. Rob Diment, head teacher at Plymstock School said: “This is a really exciting development for Plymstock School. Across the country the performing and creative arts have been quite marginalised in education, but we do not intend for this to happen at our school. “The arts are an important part of a wellrounded education and many students, staff and parents have a real passion in this area. Our aim is to make Plymstock School a real creative centre of excellence at the heart of our local community.”

Plympton train station plaque is back on show An historic commemorative plaque which had been lost to the midst of time can once again be seen by the community after clearance works carried out by Network Rail.

The Plympton and District Civic Society had a commemorative plaque put in situ at the old Plympton Railway Station back in 1998 to mark the historic importance of the site. It was unveiled at the time by then Stannator Margaret Easterbrook along with local historian John Boulden who was the Civic Society’s chairman. However the passage of time and the accumulation of vegetation on the site over the ensuing two decades resulted in the plaque being lost from view in the overgrowth. Now, following a project by Network Rail to significantly cut back growth on the perimeters of its track in the local area, the stone upon which the plaque was mounted has been re-discovered and it has been reset on a new plinth to make it more noticeable. Stannator Andrew Hill along with members of the Plympton and District Civic Society and the Network Rail team involved in the resetting of the commemorative plaque attended a ceremony at the site on May 8. During the clearance of the area alongside the parking bay in Boringdon Road where the plaque is now displayed a staggering 500 or more empty alcohol bottles were removed along with a sofa, discarded drainpipes and other items of debris.

Jason Bloomfield, Sean Baker and Chris Kirwan from Network Rail with the remounted plaque

Stannator Andrew Hill said: “I commend the efforts of the Network Rail team in clearing up this area and setting off for all to see this important plaque which the Plympton Civic Society first put on this site some 20 years ago. With this clearance and repositioning happening just before the start of Plympton’s local history week the timing could not be better.” The plaque was first erected 150 years after the first train came through Plympton and commemorated the operational years of the station from 1848 to 1959. The stone on which the plaque is mounted was previously the base of a headstone and was donated back in 1998 by Plympton St Mary’s Church. Monumental Masons G F Triscott and Sons were involved in the inscription on the three hundredweight granite stone upon which the wording ‘Site of Plympton Railway Station 1948 - 1959’ is inset. The revealing of the monument has sparked interest on the Plympton Podcast’s Facebook page and has led to renewed calls for the railway station to be re-opened. Guy Alexander Bell posted: “Someone should start up a campaign group to reopen it, I would think a lot of people would like it back open. It would drastically reduce traffic on Plymouth Road and Marsh Mills for a start!” Glenn Woodall added: “Now that Plympton is a lot bigger and forever growing with more houses and even Sherford on the doorstep why can’t we have our own train station? This would take some of the pressure off Plymouth.” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

£5,000 for Hannahs

The Dame Hannah Rogers Trust recently received a donation of £4,999 from Santander.

Elaine Bleazard, branch director at Santander’s Plymouth Branch, presented the cheque to Hannahs corporate fundraiser, Claire Landricombe, and Andrew Green from Hannahwood, Hannahs young adult provision. The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation, which offers Discovery Grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities. This grant will fund a range of musical equipment allowing the young people at Hannahs with profound physical disabilities and limited movement to take part in music therapy sessions and create music. Music provides an important outlet for self-expression and social interaction and the opportunity to develop their creativity and refine their motor skills. It will benefit 39 of the young adults with physical disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy, autism and acquired brain injuries will benefit from the musical equipment. Music therapy sessions will be delivered in groups to those with restricted movement allowing them to take part and experience

the life changing benefits of music. The project will enable the young people to access music based activities that enhance feelings of self-confidence, selfworth and self-esteem to assist them in reaching their fullest potential and improve their quality of life. Hannahs also aims to connect with the local community through music to challenge society assumptions and beliefs about disabilities. Claire Landricombe, said “We are delighted to be recipients of the Santander Discovery Grant this year and are very grateful for the continued support that we receive from our friends at Santander. We are absolutely thrilled to benefit from such a generous amount which can now be used to transform our music therapy at the Dame Hannah Rogers Charity. It was fantastic to be able to show Elaine around Hannahs Ivybridge recently and introduce her to some of our young adults who demonstrated their music mixing ability using some of the new equipment. “ Elaine said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. We are committed to playing a key part in the community and we are delighted to be supporting the Dame Hannah Trust, and hope the donation makes a real difference”.

Worth over £91 billion to the UK, the explosion of the creative economy has prompted the launch of the ‘1000 Makers’ campaign by local social enterprise, RIO – the Real Ideas Organisation.

RIO’s ‘1,000 Makers’campaign shines a light on the growth and prosperity of the creative industries for children and young people in the city. Now being heralded as the 4th Industrial Revolution, new technologies are combining with established practice to change the way we work and live our lives. Launched in May to a community of creatives and business leaders, the campaign provides opportunities for businesses and Plymouth’s burgeoning community of makers to offer experiences to children and young people. Jonathan Clitheroe, head of challenge based learning at RIO, said: “We believe it is essential that Plymouth’s young people have the experience of being makers, rather than solely passive consumers of technology. Our world needs makers: versatile, emotionally intelligent and agile makers. Makers who create with language, image, code, steel, clay or even policy.’ Lindsey Hall, chief executive of RIO, said: “In a world where the take up of creative subjects in schools is being squeezed and where industry is crying out for creative skills, 1000 Makers is a campaign to provide visibility to the fast-growing creative economy and show the significant potential for a career in this sector.” 1000 Makers echoes the government’s stance that creative skills are at the heart of the UK’s industrial strategy and with the creative industries growing at twice the rate of the UK economy as a whole, it is important to ensure today’s young people are prepared for the future career landscape. Working with local makers, the first workshops kick-off at Ocean Studios in the picturesque Royal William Yard in June. THE

To love a person is to see him as God intended him to be

The Gospel of John (Chapter 8) tells of some Pharisees befriended sinners. He seemed to break all their rules. And the people loved Him. consciences stricken. He knew men’s hearts and He convinced them of their own sin. The woman stands alone with Jesus. He asks her where her accusers are. “They’re gone.” We can almost hear her shocked relief. “Has no man condemned you?” “No one Lord!” (It’s interesting that this woman is the one who recognises that Jesus is Lord). “Then go your way, and from now on don’t sin.” Jesus’ words, to the ears of legalistic religion, are outrageous. ‘What, you mean she just gets let off and told not to do it again!’ Yes, it’s called mercy, and it is in the heart of God Who has taken her punishment on the cross. The Pharisees, blinded by their own offence and agendas, could never see God’s law with God’s eyes, so they missed His heart. We can wonder whether Jesus’ conviction of their sin was enough to cut those hard hearts to allow love in again. After all, He is their Father, too. More than punishing her sin, Jesus wanted her to be the woman He knew she could be. Theodore Dostoevsky said: ‘To love a person, means to see him as God intended him to be.’ Our accusers, those who hurt us, and ourselves included. That’s a tough call, so we need God’s help to do it. £370,000 Skills Training Centre opens at Sherford Gary Streeter, MP for South West Devon, officially opened Sherford’s new £370,000 Skills Training Centre, celebrating the occasion alongside key dignitaries, the Sherford Consortium, local training providers and construction contractors at the new development.

Based at Sherford, and already welcoming its first trainees, the one-of-a-kind facility marks a major, long-term commitment to addressing and reducing the region’s skills challenge. The training centre will engage military veterans, apprentices, local contractors, as well as those currently working at Sherford, boosting manual skills by providing training and experience across numerous trades. The training centre boasts two classrooms, a workshop and an outdoor training area, providing trainees with the opportunity to learn at the heart of one of the region’s largest new developments. Those using the training centre will be supported by expert onsite teams and teaching staff, as well as a dedicated training centre co-ordinator based at the facility. As part of the Sherford Skills Training Scheme, the training centre will engage a variety of users, including individuals and sub-contractors already working at Sherford. It will also be used by those looking to retrain or learn new skills, with 60% of this group expected to be former members of the Armed Forces, providing training and practical experience to help them develop professionally. The development of the training centre has been funded by the Sherford Consortium, the network of national homebuilders responsible for the new community, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey. Following a competitive bid process led by the Consortium and key delivery partners – City College Plymouth, South Devon College and Plymouth Construction Training Group – the training centre was also awarded funding from The Construction Industry Trading Board (CITB), set to be distributed over three years. It is hoped that the centre will not only boost skills on site at Sherford, but also create a lasting legacy by improving the region’s economic growth and employment landscape. Gary Streeter said: “I am delighted to support the opening of the new Sherford Training Centre which is another reflection on how the community at Sherford is now firmly

up and running. It will provide important resources and training for people wishing to work in the construction sector. It is critical that we train up a new generation of construction workers and skilled tradesmen if we are to meet the infrastructure challenges of our country. This is an important initiative.” Emma Comber, Sherford’s new training centre co-ordinator said: “The training centre provides a unique opportunity to learn and train at one of the largest construction sites

in demand across the industry, with the centre providing a hub for people from all backgrounds to retrain, refresh or upskill achieving recognised industry qualifications.” Ian Pugsley, Taylor Wimpey, member of the Sherford Consortium and lead developer for the training centre, said: “We are committed to providing skills and training which will have a positive impact across the region, working with local businesses, contractors and workers to deliver a training centre which meets all of their needs. “As well as being one of the South West’s largest new developments, it is also one of the most innovative, and we require skilled workers to help proudly deliver the high-quality homes required. By basing the training centre at Sherford, attendees can also learn how a construction site of this size operates, while acquiring the skills and training needed to succeed and progress professionally, supporting the region’s economic growth and development.” Economic growth Devon County Council Leader, John Hart, said: “I’m sure everyone’s pleased that trainees are already making use of the training centre and hopefully it will provide all important skills for future construction workers in Devon. It highlights the long term thinking behind the Sherford development to help support the continuing economic growth of our county.” Cllr Michael Hicks, Lead Member for Sherford at South Hams District Council, said: “I’m thrilled to see the Skills Training Centre opened. It really is a fantastic opportunity for young people, service veterans and those already employed in the construction industry. It’s more evidence that Sherford is developing into not just another collection of houses, but a living, breathing community with an eye on the future.” For more information about Sherford and the new training centre visit: www.sherford. org and for more information about the Skills Training Scheme or to register your interest visit: www.sherford.org/pages/skillstraining-scheme/93
