Litter pick legends!

Fifty volunteers joined forces with the team from Clean Our Patch to carry out a big litter pick in Plympton. Their incredible efforts led to the collection of an incredible total of 115 bags of rubbish. More litter picks are now planned in Plympton.

Sherford Life What sparks joy for you? That’s what celebrity de-cluttering queen Marie Kondo wants us to ask.

Have you taken her radical advice? In short, the advice is to ask of every item in your house, “Does this spark joy in me?” If it does, it stays; if it doesn’t, it goes. As you

By Revd Tom Brassil can imagine, the Marie Kondo craze sweeping the country has led to charity shops being inundated with second-hand goods that simply no longer sparked joy in their previous owners. In fact, I’ve heard that in my home town of Woking the charity shops have stopped accepting donations!

Hopefully it is not just our possessions that spark joy in us. Perhaps that is where the Marie Kondo philosophy falls short – do things really spark joy in and of themselves? But as we ask the question, maybe we will see other things in our life that spark joy: family, friends, music, fun experiences, the beauty of nearby Dartmoor or the coast.

I hope that as you read the pages of this newspaper there will be stories that spark joy in you: stories of local heroes and charities, new community groups and facilities that just might make a real difference to life on this side of Plymouth.

Some who read this will be looking for a new start in a new community like Sherford as a way to rediscover joy. If that is you, I really hope you find it!

Others will be looking to the next job promotion or pay rise. Or the next sporting success for Plymouth or England (although maybe that is less likely to spark joy!)

This month at Sherford Community Church we are reading Paul’s letter to the Philippians (a part of the Bible) together.

In it Paul talks a lot about what sparks joy. In fact, he suggests that we do a ‘Marie Kondo’ not just on our homes but on our lives.

What about our lives sparks joy, and what does not? He says that he could have looked for joy in all sorts of places: his good education, his good job, his good reputation or the fact that he was the Israelite equivalent of upper middleclass. But he put all that behind him when he realised that only one thing would spark true joy: following Jesus.

He said, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

(Philippians 3 verse 8).

Lots of us wouldn’t naturally think of the Christian faith being about joy.

Perhaps we’re more likely to think of it being about rules and regulations. But Paul saw things differently.

And despite writing these words from prison, his letter to the Philippians is unbelievably joyful.

He really did find the joy he was looking for! If you’re around Sherford this month, why not join us on a Sunday morning and see for yourself?

Go-ahead for gym, new shops and pub at The Broadway but will it be Wetherspoons?

Planners have given the go-ahead for the former Co-op store in Plymstock Broadway to be redeveloped as a public house, gym and several retail units.

The application was first submitted by the owners of Plymstock Broadway in December 2017 - and received overwhelming support from local residents.

The Broadway has suffered from a significant drop in footfall since the Co-op closed - and has seen a number of local high street and national retailers close in recent years.

It is believed that the delay was due to negotiations between Plymouth City Council and the applicants over Section 106 obligations which require developers to make a contribution to local amenities and services.

The plan was finally given the go-ahead at the beginning of February.

Speculation is now rife that Wetherspoons will be opening a public house in The Broadway - although this has not been formally confirmed by the group - which already has five pubs in the city, including Stannary Court in The Ridgeway, Plympton.

A spokesman for Wetherspoons confirmed the company was 'looking at the site' but had not exchanged on it at present.

The former Co-op site has been empty since March 2014. The two-storey building comprises nearly 32,000 square feet of space.

The public house will occupy nearly a third of the site - approximately 9,600 square feet - with the two retail units taking up a similar amount of space and the Anytime Fitness gym just under 7,000 square feet.

The proposed gym operator, Anytime Fitness is one of the world's most popular 24 hour fitness gyms, enabling members to work out at a time to suit them. It will occupy part of the ground floor as well as a large part of the first floor.

In their application the developers commented: "The proposed scheme provides an excellent opportunity to enhance and better utilise the site in order to provide new, modern-format retail space in Plymstock, along with community, evening/night time and leisure uses to significantly boost the vitality and viability of the district centre… and bring a key vacant site back into active use."

Praxis Retail Estate Management, managing agents for The Broadway have welcomed the green light for the development.

Richard Allen, senior asset manager for Praxis said: “We are delighted that planning consent has come through for the proposed re-development of the former Co-op supermarket.

"Following the conclusion of ongoing lease negotiations, we look forward to announcing full details of our exciting mixed-use scheme featuring a brand new pub, gym and several retail units shortly. This development is a significant part of the shopping centre owner’s ongoing investment strategy, which has already seen high quality refurbishments of a number of vacant retail shop units, ready for local retailers and businesses to occupy on fully flexible leasing terms.

"Praxis will continue to work alongside The Broadway's owner to strengthen and build this important and much-loved neighbourhood shopping location, and I’m confident that the local community will be able to enjoy the benefits of

further improvements to the centre’s facilities over the coming year.”

The Broadway centre manager, Mark Berry added: “We acknowledge that The Broadway has sadly seen a number of local and high street retailer and bank closures over the last couple of years, reflecting the changing retail market nationally.

"However we are keen to reassure both customers and business owners that we will continue to invest in this Centre, and our team are very keen to work with existing retailers and encourage new shops and businesses to open up in The Broadway and news such as the approved planning consent is very positive."

What do the public think?

Shoppers and retailers in The Broadway have welcomed the news that the former Co-op store is to be re-developed.

However, some expressed concern about the noise impact on people who live in accommodation above the centre's shops.

Shopper Chloe Hawke from Wembury said: "The Broadway definitely needs something like Chloe Hawke this as it will bring lots more people in. But I guess it might be very noisy at times."

Nicky Smith said: "I think having a Wetherspoons in Plymstock is great, but not here in The Broadway because of the impact on people living here. I have lived in Plymstock for 30 years and we used to have some lovely shops here."

Corrinne Ramsey commented: "I think that anything that goes into the old Co-op is much better than having it empty. I hope the gym operators will do something to attract Demi Houghton young people as there

is very little for them to do in Plymstock at present."

Young mum Sian Hughes regularly travels from her home in Keyham to visit Plymstock Broadway. "I like The Broadway because it is safe for children, there is free parking and I get to meet my friends in Costa."

Annie Gear, manager of Lidstone's Butchers said: "I think it's really good news as it will definitely bring more people in to The Broadway. Footfall is really poor here at present. Hopefully it will be a Wetherspoons as the centre has seen so many shops close recently."

Demi Houghton, sales executive at the Vape Shop - which opened in The Broadway at the end of last year - said: "I had not been here for several years and it's now very quiet compared with how it used to be. I think developing the Co-op store is going to be really good for The Broadway it needs something to happen."

Anger over Cot Hill Bridge repair delays The misery caused by the defective bridge over the railway at Cot Hill may not be resolved until 2022 it emerged at the full meeting of Plymouth City Council in January.

Plympton litter pick bags 115 sacks of rubbish

An army of local residents amassed an incredible 115 sacks of rubbish during a community litter pick in Plympton.

50 people turned up for the event on February 10 which was organised by local resident Cathy Loft and supported by the Keyham based 'Clean Our Patch' who have

been organising successful litter picks across Plymouth since March 2018.

Among those taking part were four local councillors Terri Beer, Patrick Nicholson, Glenn Jordan and Samantha Leaves.

El Clarke of 'Clean Our Patch' said: "It was an amazing turnout. Our sponsors EcoBlitz and Ethical Life supplies also joined us and it really was an inspiring day.

"Plympton Library were kind enough to host us for tea, coffee and cake afterwards. We would like to thank everyone who came out. Their support is much appreciated."

The shell of a tortoise, discarded picnic chairs and a large rubber tyre were among the more unusual items discovered during the litter pick.

One participant in the community clean up commented: "It was good to do a really worthwhile job with like minded people. Hopefully the ones responsible will note our presence and think before they throw."

The area of the litter pick was focused around Harewood Park and Ridgeway.

The cost of fixed penalty notices are currently £80 for littering, £100 for dog fouling and control, £80 for fly-posting and £400 for fly-tipping.

Plymouth City Council has pledged to clamp down on litter having recently taken enforcement back in house. Fixed penalty notices will be issued to people found to be committing environmental crimes.

A Plymouth City Council spokesperson said: "All of the revenue received will go into paying for the service, with surplus invested into infrastructure and equipment to help keep the city clean."

The revelation has caused widespread anger in the local community with many not happy at the apparent impasse between Plymouth City Council and Network Rail over achieving a prompt repair.

A diversion has been in operation for more than a year resulting in vehicles over 7.5 tons having to travel down Valley Road and exit via Linketty Lane with the resultant disruption this causes on Plymouth Road as well as diversions for traffic which used to enter Merafield via Linketty Lane.

The shock news came in response to a question raised by Plympton Erle Councillor Ian Darcy who called for an update on the situation.

Responding, Cllr Sue Dann, who is the relevant Cabinet portfolio holder, said: “We’ve been talking to Network Rail. They’ve given us an approximate date of somewhere in the order of 21/22 (meaning 2021/2022) in order to be able to do the bridge.

She added that they perhaps “might be able to bring it forward because actually they are going to maintain and do this maintenance for us because they have to do track closures and all sorts of things like that, but in the meantime we’re making sure we are having more of a semi-permanent fix on the traffic lights which come out onto Plymouth Road.”

There was however no guarantee of the bridge work starting earlier than the estimated date of 2021/22.

Work on installing the semi-permanent lights at the junction of Linketty Lane and Plymouth Road has already started.

Many local motorists are however unhappy at the length of time it is taking to repair the weakened bridge and return Linketty Lane to its normal direction of travel.

Louise Wright was among those commenting on social media after the council meeting. She posted: “It’s ridiculous with all the roadworks that are going to be starting soon with the Merafield roundabout and Plymouth Road.

Linketty Lane would have been an invaluable route to those living here instead we have to queue with all the people rat running to Plymstock.”

Jo Rogers commented: “What a shambles.

Network Rail and Plymouth City Council should have their hands forced on this, Plympton is turning into a large car park.”

Nathan Tibbs added: “If the bridge was deemed too dangerous for cars to pass would it still be 2022?

(The) road isn’t fit for purpose and so should be resolved. Disappointing that Network Rail and PCC have not got any sort of working agreement. There must be bridges like this all over Plymouth.”

Meanwhile Screwfix have launched an investigation after receiving complaints that lorries delivering to its outlet in Valley Road have been flouting the weight restriction on the bridge by exiting over it rather than using Linketty Lane.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We are sorry that this has been happening. We take all complaints very seriously and an investigation has already begun to prevent this from happening.”

The acclaimed BBC Singers are appearing at the Plymouth Contemporary Music Festival in February

Plymouth Contemporary Music Festival Feb 22 to 24 A Shakespearean prequel opera with a Game of Thrones twist will be among the highlights of the Contemporary Music Festival 2019 at the University of Plymouth.

Quantum physics, seagull song and a gala concert featuring the acclaimed BBC Singers will also be part of the 14th annual event, which once again promises an exploration of the boundary between science and creativity. Running over the weekend of February 22 to February 24, the festival is organised by the University’s Arts Institute in partnership with its Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR). With a theme of Multiverse, the 2019 edition aims to help us understand how the mysteries of quantum science relate to daily reality, through musical interpretations of the quantum world. Burgh Island Hotel marks 90th anniversary with multi-million pound renovation and refurbishment The iconic Burgh Island Hotel, located on a 26-acre private island off the South Devon coast, has unveiled a multi-million-pound refurbishment that will stay faithful to its art deco heritage - and deliver new standards of modern contemporary luxury.

The renovation will include upgrading of all the public areas, as well as the gardens.

Addition of further bedrooms and a Spa is planned for 2020. The highly skilled team of craftsmen and trades working on the project are all from the surrounding areas of South Devon, providing a major boost for the local economy.

The core focus of the refurbishment will be the public reception areas, The Ballroom and Palm Court Bar, ensuring guests receive excellent first impressions of the hotel.

The Grand Ballroom hosts the hotel’s formal and iconic fine dining restaurant, where wearing black tie and evening dress is a prerequisite just as it was in the 1920s, while the Palm Court Bar allows guests to enjoy both pre and post dinner cocktail and drinks.

There will also be a new addition to the dining offer at the hotel with the opening of The Nettlefold Restaurant, which will use only the finest in local produce with a specialist fish focused menu.

Renovations have already been completed on two of the hotel’s key features, The Beach House and the new Nettlefold restaurant in preparation for its opening in March. Agatha Christie used the Beach House as a writer’s retreat, which now boasts a stylish modern interior with sophisticated facilities and stunning sea views.

The hotel’s refurbishment follows last year’s renovation of the island’s Pilchard Inn, which was established in 1336. This upgrade included establishing The Pilchard Café, and installing new kitchens. The Pilchard now serves a lovely menu al fresco in the summer right on the beach or cosily in front of a roaring fire in the winter on your very own private island. The hotel is scheduled to reopen on February 20.

The network which is being set up by the Plymouth Octopus Project (POP+), launches on Saturday March 2.

It will enable residents, community and neighbourhood groups to collaborate and share experiences across the city and, crucially, connect them with fellow participants from statutory agencies, such as the city council, police and Livewell South West.

A digital platform - Our Plymouth – has been created to support the network and enable all partners to work more collaboratively.

Ernie Edgcumbe, who has been employed

by POP+ to set up the network, said it’s a radical step forward: “In recent years we have seen significant amount of money spent in some areas in Plymouth but, at the same time, we know that some communities have felt that they had little say in the process.

“This network has been set up to give a voice to individuals, communities and neighbourhood groups; to help enable them to make their own decisions, to help empower them to influence decisions made by others and to support them to help them succeed.”

The Neighbourhood and Communities Network believes that ‘Every Community Matters’. It recognises that areas of Plymouth have largely, and historically, been working in isolation but, as Ernie Edgcumbe explained more can be achieved through collboration; “Being a part of a central city-wide forum, run and led by local people, will help groups and organisation become stronger and more resilient as well as helping to bring about the change that local people feel is needed.”

The launch of the Neighbourhood and Communities Network is on March 2 from 10.30am to 3.30pm and will take place at Age UK, Astor Drive, Mount Gould.

Those attending will be able to hear more about the aims of the network, meet other participants and start planning how they can work together to make Plymouth a better and fairer place for all.

Good inspection finding for local infant school Plympton St Mary C of E Infant School has achieved a ‘Good’ judgement in their recent SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) Inspection.

Church based schools not only have OFSTED inspections but also a separate SIAMS inspection.

The SIAMS inspection took place in January and looked at all aspects of school life, focusing on how the school’s vision shapes its provision and how this enables all pupils to flourish.

Since 2016 the school leadership has worked hard to improve all areas of the school. This has been supported by the school’s vision “Let all that you do be done in love”.

The report recognises the progress that the school has made and the impact of its vision. Among the report’s findings are:“The school’s distinctive Christian vision is influential in shaping an inclusive, caring community.”

“Staff model friendship and trust in their relationships with all. Pupils treat each other with respect and dignity.”

“The headteacher has created a cohesive staff team who share her enthusiasm. Staff at all levels feel valued and are committed to the school’s vision.”

“Pupils talk about their love of learning and finding it fun. This reflects the vision that pupils should develop a love of learning and aspire to be the best that they can be. Pupils are well engaged in their learning. In the last two years, standards have steadily risen and are now in line with national expectations.

“Support for vulnerable pupils is emerging as a strength where dedicated staff meet a diverse range of needs. This extends to families who indicate how valuable this is.”

Headteacher Suzie Ottewell said: “We are delighted that we have been able to demonstrate the progress that our school has made. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our school team, governors, and the unwavering support of our parent body. We are incredibly proud of our children for demonstrating the impact that our Christian ethos has on their daily lives and look forward to building on this in the future.”

Stannator candidates revealed Three longstanding members of the Plympton community who between them have lived in Plympton for a total of 122 years are each hoping to become the town’s next Stannator.

The hopefuls - Ken Kingwell, Andy Lewis and Fiona Smith - attended January’s meeting of the Plympton Community Council to outline their applications for the post.

Ken Kingwell has lived in Colebrook for 44 years and is a prominent member of Plympton St Mary’s Church. He is a church warden there, a position he has occupied for over 6 years, and he has previously served on the Parochial Church Council.

Andy Lewis is a member of the Royal British Legion Club. His family connections to Plympton can be traced back to the 1700’s to a distant relative, William Tucker, who was a Colebrook blacksmith. Mr Lewis is well-known for his musical fundraising efforts for various charities and he has lived in Underwood for around 40 years.

Fiona Smith comes from a nursing background and has lived in Colebrook since 1981. She has been a poppy seller and has been a member of a number of Plympton organisations, most notably the Sir Joshua Reynolds WI which she represents on the Community Council.

A £2.5 million funding package has been approved to expand Plymstock School.

It is the first school in the city to be awarded funding under the Secondary Basic Need programme which will provide additional pupil places to meet the needs of the city’s growth.

The need for additional school places in the Plymstock areas was identified as part of the city’s Secondary Review.

Council Leader Tudor Evans, who approved the spend, said: “For the last six years we have been working closely with schools across the city to make sure there were enough school places for primary pupils.

“But now these pupils are starting to move into secondary school we need to make sure there are enough places available to meet the demand.

“Continued investment in our schools is absolutely crucial if we are to maintain high standards and encourage families to raise their children in Plymouth.”

The Plymstock School expansion project will create 200 additional school places and includes: • building an arts and drama facility which would provide additional sports and hall space and would allow for community use • creating six new classrooms with additional toilet facilities.

• remodelling the existing kitchen and dining facility, known as the Galley.

The works are due to start shortly and will be completed in a series of phased completions during 2020.

The money has been approved from the City Council’s Investment Board and will form part of the Council’s Capital Programme and is available by using Section 106 funding.

The majority of this section 106 funding has come from the new housing development being built at Plymstock Quarry by Persimmon Homes and will be used to support the provision of additional school places.

It is a statutory requirement for Plymouth City Council as the Local Education Authority to provide sufficient pupil places to meet the demands of the growing population of the city.

Plympton gym owner plans ‘jail escape’ @PlymChronicle

Plympton gym owner and local strongman Steve Swatton is intending to 'escape' from jail in his latest fundraising mission for the child bereavement charity Jeremiah's Journey.

Steve has decided that on 3 March he will 'escape' from Dartmoor prison and make the 14.4 mile walk back to his Flex Fitness Gym in Valley Road Plympton with a 37lb kettle bell attached to his ankle! His escape mission is due to start at 9am and he will be sent on his way

Steve has been practising for the event and said: "You don't realise how much you use your arms when walking until you have to carry something like a kettle bell and it also causes you to change the way you move your legs too." In his practices Steve has been averaging 1 mile every 18 minutes, but he hasn't yet done the full 14.4 miles in one go.

Some local businesses will be supporting Steve's jailbreak. He will be driven to the prison in a limousine provided by Walter C Parson in Market Road and the Oggy Oggy Pasty Shop in Ridgeway is donating £350 of pasties for Steve and his supporters.

The jailbreak will be the latest in a long line of Steve's fundraisers for charity which have ranged from pulling a double decker bus to carrying a tractor tyre across St Mary's Park and even lying on a bed of nails for an hour!

Policing is to cost £21.32 more a year

Council tax payers in Plympton and Plymstock, along with those elsewhere in Devon and Cornwall, will be paying an extra 41p per week for their policing.

Following the recent Police and Crime Panel the 2019/20 local authority precept for Devon and Cornwall Police has been agreed.

Devon and Cornwall Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer said: “I note the views of the Police and Crime Panel today and their agreement to raise the council tax precept by 41 pence a week for a Band C property.

This will bring the total of the policing element of a Band C council tax bill to £188.68 per year.

The Chief Constable continued: “While I don’t under estimate the impact of rising costs for our communities, an increase in precept is the only way I can provide a sustainable policing service for the communities of Devon and Cornwall.

“Government funding remains a huge personal frustration as my force has for many years, and continues, to fall foul of the Home Office funding formula of police forces.

“The geography and population of Devon and Cornwall means we do not get a fair slice of funding compared to other – often more urban forces.

“If we received the average from government we could potentially invest £40m more into frontline policing – reflecting the enormous challenges of policing our rural, urban and coastal communities.”

Invictus Games hero Mark Ormrod opens Sherford Vale Primary School Celebrated Invictus Games gold medal winner, motivational speaker and author, Mark Ormrod, and Sir Gary Streeter, MP for South West Devon, joined local dignitaries, families and members of the Sherford Consortium, to officially open Sherford’s first primary school.

To celebrate the official opening of Sherford Vale, Mark Ormrod unveiled a commemorative plaque, while Sir Gary Streeter joined children in burying a time capsule at the school.

The new school represents a £6m investment into community infrastructure and has been funded by the Sherford Consortium – the partnership of awardwinning homebuilders, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey – with £1m also pledged towards its creation by Devon County Council.

Marking a major milestone in the development of the new community, Sherford Vale opened its doors for the first

time in September. The pupils, aged between 2 -11 years old, are the first of 420 children set to attend the new school, which is sponsored and run by the Westcountry Schools Trust (WeST), which has a proven track record in education excellence locally.

Located at the heart of the new community, Sherford Vale is the first of four planned schools set to open in the next decade.

Offering a rich and balanced curriculum, Sherford Vale boasts high quality facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, and indoor and outdoor learning play spaces. Teaching also focuses on sustainability, taking advantage of Sherford’s extensive Country Park, woodland and wildlife habits.

Malcom Gilmore, Sherford Consortium said: “It is fantastic to celebrate the official opening of Sherford Vale alongside those who helped turned the school’s vision into a reality, as well as welcoming Mark Ormrod to unveil the plaque and tour the new facilities.

St Luke’s Hospice take over Toys ‘R’ Us site

Local charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth is to move into the empty Toys ‘R’ Us store on Western Approach.

Plymouth City Council and the charity have just agreed a temporary lease arrangement which will see a charity shop set up within the store.

As well as stocking furniture, the shop will also be the artists hub for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth, before the 40 individually designed Elmers hit the city this Summer.

St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth Commercial Director, Mike Dukes said: “This is a very exciting venture for us and will be our

largest shop in Devon and Cornwall.

“Our shops provide a vital source of fundraising to enable us to deliver compassionate care to patients and their families when they need us most. We estimate that we will generate enough income to support over 200 patients and their families with a whole package of care at home in the duration of the lease.

“But we can’t do it alone, donations of good quality furniture and sofas are urgently needed, we also need volunteers that are so vital to the operation of the shop. We aim to be open on Monday 4 March, but donations are welcome now, just visit the website or give us a call on 01752 964455 for information about our free seven day a week collection service.”

The Council acquired the long-hold lease on the building last year after Toys ‘R’ Us went into administration and the shop shut its doors.

The Council recently made the store’s 165 car parking spaces available to the public to park in addition to the 880 spaces available in the Council-owned Western Approach multi storey car park.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance and City Centre Champion said: “We have long term plans to regenerate Colin Campbell Court and Millbay, which was why the building presented such a great opportunity for us.

“But regeneration takes time so it’s great to see an empty building brought back into use while we plot and plan the next chapter of the city centre.

“Having the building occupied is better for the fabric of the building, but it also means we can encourage more people down here and helps a great charity to carry on with their work.”

The other section of the building is currently rented by British Heart Foundation.

They have been consulted about their new neighbours.

Where did the time go?!

Jerome Marcus, who left Plymstock Comprehensive in the early 70s, was an aspiring musician from a very young age.

“I felt naturally drawn by anything expressional on many levels and grateful for the support from the staff especially music teacher John Kember who allowed me to express and innovate unashamedly,” said Jerome.

He joined the school big band and had his own pop band performing for local charities.

Rich in spirit, determined and passionate he began performing on the Plymouth pub circuit performing with bands such as Crazy Feeling, Badger and The Luncheon Vultures in the mid 70s at music venues Breakwater (Coxside), The Ark Royal (Devonport) and Good Companions (City Centre) for five years before leaving for London in 1980 to start a career as a musician and in the music business.

“I made the bold decision to move out of Plymouth to the hub of the music industry. It was a risk I had to take,” he said.

“It was tough going and challenging but I soldiered on to test my worth as a musician and getting used to a completely new way of life. I had nothing to lose but to give it my best shot.

“I consider myself very lucky that over 45 years later I am still performing on stage and still involved in music thanks to my early days at Plymstock School and Plymouth musicians”.

He has performed with many great musicians including Rory Gallagher, Paul Jones, Imelda May, has had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Tom Jones, Joss Stone and has toured with Uriah Heep, Kool & The Gang, and Slade among many others.

In the early 90s he became artist relations manager at Arbiter Distribution and in early 2000 was made European artist relations manager for the Sabian cymbal company looking after high profile drummers such as Phil Collins, Billy Cobham, Dave Weckl and being part of building the brand for the company.

He is currently touring the UK with one of London’s top R&B bands Sam Kelly’s Station House who will be performing in the West Country at Acorn Arts Centre in Penzance and Ashburton Arts Centre.

The band will be promoting their new CD ‘No Barricades’ and Jerome will be celebrating his 10th year with the band.

He added: “I consider myself very lucky to still be recording, touring and performing in my 60s although I must say it doesn’t get easier the older I get, but driven by an inbuilt passion it makes it all worth my while.”.

Plymouth is rich in musical talent and his concern is the lack of support for upcoming new musicians who are struggling to support and develop their talent.

Jerome added: “As the music industry

experiences continued changes, music venues are having to cope with new social challenges, meanig that it becomes much harder to ‘Keep Music Live’.

Vanessa and Caroline are making it in management thanks to apprenticeships Two recently promoted retail workers have described how apprenticeships have given them the crucial skills they need to succeed as managers.

Vanessa Hawken from Mutley and Caroline Mayne, who lives in Devonport, had both been appointed assistant Managers at kitchen and homeware chain Lawsons - and knew the value training would bring to making them a success in their new roles.

Mastering management requires a fresh set of skills, so the Lawsons team contacted City College Plymouth to invest in their development and the future of the business with two Apprenticeship courses.

Caroline has worked in retail for 35 years, six of which at Lawsons as a part-time sales assistant. She began her Level 3 management apprenticeship when she was promoted to assistant manager last year.

“My employer chose City College Plymouth to deliver the apprenticeship, however I cannot recommend the college enough, it would be my

first choice,” she said.

“The support I have received from my family and assessor at the college have made returning to education possible. They have motivated me and reassured me the hard work is all worthwhile.

“Lawsons has helped me to further my career by giving me the opportunity to undertake the apprenticeship. With the knowledge I have gained from the qualification I can continue to climb the career ladder and flourish in my new role. My ultimate goal is to run my own shop one day.

“To any adults thinking

about an apprenticeship, I can’t recommend the college enough! It has boosted my confidence and taught me skills which I will use now and in my future career. Although it is tough, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience.”

In 2017/18, 38% of people undertaking an apprenticeship were aged 25 or over in England compared to 31% under 19, busting the myth that Apprenticeships are largely for school leavers.

Vanessa has worked at Lawsons for 14 years and her hard work was recently rewarded with a promotion

to assistant manager.

Keen to improve her knowledge, Vanessa also started an apprenticeship in management with City College Plymouth.

“The qualification has taught me the key responsibilities, skills and behaviours of an assistant manager," she said.

“Many of my colleagues had successfully completed courses at City College Plymouth and had good things to say, so I had no doubts that studying my apprenticeship would be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

“I really enjoy being customer-facing and working with different people so taking on a managerial role was the next logical step in my career.

“The management apprenticeship has taught me everything I need to know to become an efficient manager. I received fantastic support from the assessors at the college and my family were there every step of the way.”

Siobhan’s loving her new role in estate agency Siobhan Grayson started 2018 in a bit of a rut. After years of ups and downs and in and out of jobs that she was unhappy in, she finally decided to make a change and find a career which offered her more from life.

Siobhan knew that business was the route she wanted to take: “I knew if I gained qualifications in this area, it would give me a broad range of opportunities to explore. That’s when I got the job at Lang Town & Country and discovered the world of estate agency!”

Apprentice Siobhan is now studying a Level 3 in Business Administration, through the Skills Group.

She said: “I didn’t expect to love my job as much as I do, but working with Lang Town & Country has shown me that sometimes being brave and making a

change, can open up a career path which I never thought I would ever take.

“After my apprenticeship, I would like to develop within estate agency. I’d like to progress to a managerial role and study further to become a fully qualified estate agent.”

Marc Rees, director at Lang Town & Country spoke highly of Siobhan. “Seeing how she has grown in confidence and

professionalism is incredible. She wants to do things right and always asks questions to improve herself. She is sensible, motivated, driven and a great team player - these are all traits we look for in someone who could really go far within this industry.

“Since Siobhan started with us, she has already had a pay rise and added benefits due to her high performance and contribution to work.”

Siobhan added: “I have been through a lot in the past, but I feel working here has made me stronger - I have gained so much confidence, I can now see where I want to go in life and what my longterm career path looks like. Growing number of female engineering apprentices An engineering skills centre in Estover is attracting a growing number of female apprentices.

The Cornwall College Group invested £200,000 in the skills centre at Sisna Park in 2014 creating a new practical and classroom facility.

Business development manager at Cornwall College, Jane Wickett, said: “Since then female recruitment has continued to grow year on year with our highest ever intake of female engineers in September 2018.

“The first female apprentices at Sisna Park started in September 2015 with the MOD and Mars Wrigley Confectionery.

Cornwall College now works in partnership with a number of local businesses, including Advanced Medical Solutions, BD Plymouth, Interlube, Kawasaki, MARS Wrigley Confectionery, MOD, NHS, Wales & West and Yeo Valley with the majority of these employing female apprentices.

“All of our apprentices are STEM ambassadors and attend school career fairs to promote apprenticeships as an option to young people, representing their individual organisations and the Engineering Careers Centre,” added Jane.

Engineering apprentice at BD Plymouth, Sharlene Pascoe, said she is ‘really enjoying the apprenticeship’.

“I’m pleased to see an increase of female apprentices, it makes it less daunting. I feel proud to be helping raising awareness of opportunities for females in this industry,” she added. “The facilities at Sisna Park are fantastic.”

Abbie West, also an engineering apprentice at BD Plymouth, agreed that the apprenticeship is really good fun.

“I wanted to do something a bit different, I quite like being a female in a male environment. I hope in five years there will be as many women as there are men in the industry,” she said.

There’s been plenty going on locally since the new year and lots for me to get involved in or support.

It was great to be able to welcome the new Associate Vicar, Rev Carl Budden to the Plymstock St Mary’s Parish. I may be biased as I’ve known Carl and his family since I was about 18 months old, but I think he’ll be a brilliant asset to the Parish. He’ll be working alongside the existing team of Revs Jennie and David Appleby across Plymstock and Hooe.

First World War artefacts to be featured in national archive Plymouth University is hosting an event in March which will see First World War artefacts digitised as part of a campaign to create a national archive.

Lest We Forget: Keep Their Stories Alive is an ambitious project, run in partnership between the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation and the University of Oxford to create a national digital archive.

Visiting the new life buoy

I’ve been busy spending my Community Grant across the Ward and was pleased to pop along and see the newly installed Life Buoy its paid for at Hooe Lake and to present a cheque to 1st Radford Rainbows. Thanks to those other groups who have been in touch to help me spend the remainder. All being well I’ll have a new pot of cash after the local elections in May so do keep your requests coming!

Much of my time is taken up with casework such as working with various teams in the Council and National Trust to find a long-term solution to the issue of fly-tipping at The Ride.

I’ve also got a meeting soon to look at various issues relating to safe crossings on a couple of key roads in the ward. Sometimes these issues take a number of months to see any progress but I’m hopeful we might see some movement on some of these issues soon.

Finally, a few weekends ago I spent an evening in the city centre with the Plymouth Street Pastors. Although not directly related to Plymstock, I am sure there are local residents who volunteer on the team and many parents, young people and not-so young people who are grateful for this amazing team who spend every Saturday evening out and about keeping everyone out having a good time safe and secure. It was a brilliant, if cold and damp evening and great to see them in action. Thanks to all those involved!

Hosted by the University of Plymouth's School of Humanities and Performing Arts, the public will be met by a team of experts and trained volunteers, where they will learn more about their artefacts and each item will be recorded into the archive. Previous Lest We Forget events have seen members of the public bringing in rare objects, such as a splatter mask to protect tank drivers’ eyes.

Dr Elaine Murphy, associate professor of Maritime/Naval History at the University of Plymouth said: “We are delighted to be hosting this event, and we hope lots of staff and students, as well as the general public, will come along to have their artefacts and the stories behind them recorded for posterity. Students from our History and English programmes will be on hand to ensure the day runs smoothly, and help the experts provide lots of information about these objects that people may not previously have been aware of.”

Andrew Fetherston, chief archivist at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, said: “Archives provide a vital link with the past and it is always amazing and gratifying to see how much it means to people when we are able to reveal the stories behind their precious family mementoes.

"Thanks to the funding of the Heritage Lottery Fund we are able to preserve our First World War heritage for current and future generations by digitising these objects through Lest We Forget: Keep Their Stories Alive. We hope this event inspires the local community across Plymouth and Devon to learn more about their First World War past.”

The event takes place at Crosspoint, Ground Floor, Roland Levinsky Building on March 6 between 2pm and 6pm.

Council litter enforcement set to begin Council environmental enforcement patrols have begun in Plymouth from Friday 1 February.

The refreshed service will continue enforcement aimed at deterring littering, fly-tipping, fly-posting and dog fouling and control and will enable a more flexible approach to keeping our city clean.

This service has been born from the Council’s earlier decision to cancel its contract with Kingdom Services Group, who had provided the service since March 2018.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “I’m really pleased to have bought this service back in house, giving us the freedom to focus on our own priorities.

"We have promised to ensure that Plymouth is a green and pleasant city and I believe that this move will go a long way to delivering on that.”

So what’s changed?

The Council is now delivering this service in-house, going its own way to focus on its own priorities, having previously worked with Kingdom.

With full responsibility for keeping the city clean, it makes sense that the Council take full responsibility for enforcement as well.

The Council has recently improved the signs in a number of parks and will continue to do so to ensure that local rules on dog fouling and control are clear.

Absolutely. Just because the Council are now enforcing themselves, it doesn’t mean that there will be more leniency for those caught offending.

Environmental crimes will still be punished with FPNs. The cost of FPNs are currently £80 for littering, £100 for dog fouling and control, £80 for fly-posting and £400 for fly-tipping.

All of the revenue received will go into paying for the service, with surplus invested into infrastructure and equipment to help keep the city clean.

What can residents do?

Talk to the Council. Report things. Tell them where the problems are. Be the eyes and ears. Does your area have a particular issue with litter? Is dog control at a particular children’s play area getting you down?

Log on to the Council website, tell them where you saw it and when, with as much information as possible to help identify perpetrators.

Leading members of Plymouth’s construction industry gathered to launch their ‘Adopt a Street’ project – the Road to Mayflower - as part of their community engagement efforts towards commemorations for Mayflower 400.

The project as a whole will strive to create a world-class visitor impression to those arriving in the city via Embankment Road, running from Marsh Mills roundabout to Cattedown roundabout.

Over 100 VIPs from the city came together to celebrate the launch at the Plymouth Snowsports Centre, which included the lighting of the ski slope for the very first time in colour as a taste of what’s to come.

Working in conjunction with Illuminate and the first of a number of Road to Mayflower lighting projects, the aim of lighting the ski slope is to capture the public’s attention on the approach to Plymouth and to create a landmark legacy feature on arrival into Britain’s Ocean City.

The event also offered attendees the chance to learn more about the project including plans to create an urban silver birch forest at Marsh Mills roundabout and installing vibrant colourful public art along the main gateway to the city centre.

Emma Hewitt, skills co-ordinator at Building Plymouth, leading in partnership the Road to Mayflower project, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people join us to celebrate the launch of our Road to Mayflower project.

Trophy cheer for Charlotte A 15-year-old Plympton Academy student is the first young person at her school to win a new award created by the Stannator of Plympton.

To mark the centenary of the end of World War I, Stannator Natalie Harrison decided to donate a trophy to each of Plympton's schools to create an annual award. The

Plympton Rotary’s Youth Speaks competition The effects of Sir David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet’ series has certainly struck a chord with the young members of Plympton’s community with pollution and especially ocean pollution being a theme of several of the competing teams at the Plympton Rotary heat of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition.

As head judge Peter Reid remarked, the planet will be in safe hands when these children are in charge as adults!

Linda Bertram was in charge of organising the local heat, which is one of the many youth competitions run

by Rotary in Great Britain & Ireland.

She said: “This speaking competition in particular covers a wide range of skills, including performance, presentation, the gathering of their ideas on topical subjects and then delivering them within a time limit.

“This is no mean feat whatever your age and many of these youngsters put some of us Rotarians to shame.”

The winners of the local heat, held at Boringdon Park Golf Club were: Boringdon A in the Junior category who spoke on ‘Ocean Pollution’, Hele’s A on ‘Are Computers More Intelligent than the People who Use them?’ in the Intermediate category and the winners of the Senior category where Hele’s B who spoke on ‘Life is an Escape Room’.

The teams now progress on to the Plymouth Area final due to take place in February and hopefully will then go on to the District and maybe National finals.

Plympton Rotary know that all of the teams will do the club proud.

Citizenship Award, as Plympton Academy have decided to call their trophy, will recognise students at the school who support others and are active citizens.

Staff at Plympton Academy were asked to nominate students who had made a significant impact as young citizens and from the nominations Charlotte North was chosen as she had been nominated by the most staff.

Charlotte said: "I was very surprised but also very proud to have received this trophy.”

Plympton Academy Principal Lisa Boorman commented: “We were pleased to be asked to offer this trophy to one of our students and very proud of Charlotte for winning it; she is a credit to the Academy, her family and, most importantly, herself.”

The trophy will now be presented to

You may be trying too hard!

Experience Last year, at the end of a busy day where I took no breaks to recharge, I slumped onto the comfy leather sofa in our meeting room to rest for 10 minutes before I went home (sounds grand, the sofa was bought from the BHF second hand shop and our meeting room doubles as a production room).

I started to pray, feeling like I wasn’t performing well enough, not progressing all the tasks I wanted or needed to do, and not delivering on people’s expectations (including mine and, I thought, God’s). This may sound familiar.

If you can bear with me on this, I felt in my prayer that God was saying ‘You’re trying too hard.’ That wasn’t what I expected; I felt I wasn’t trying nearly hard enough.

As I reflected, in the quiet of that room, it dawned on me that however hard I tried to

All my striving was never going to achieve the best outcomes, because I had got stuck on the treadmill of working for approval, or from a place of being simply too driven. I’d lost sight of why I was doing it all. It was all about me. Wise people from all cultures tell us that we are at our best when we’re rested and self-forgetful – it defies some of the productivity hacks, but we know it’s true. The people around us (who cop the fallout of our strife) certainly know it’s true!

According to Jesus, we’re simply not built to do this stuff on our own – we’re designed to draw strength, direction and rest from God. He said, ‘Come to me if you’re overburdened, and I’ll give you rest. Take my yoke on you, learn from me and you’ll find rest for your soul, because I am gentle and lowly in heart. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’

(Matthew 11v28) Yokes don’t figure much in our 21st century work, but back then they were a common metaphor which we could interpret as ‘this thing

that ties me to my task and which helps me pull my burden’. Yes, life has burdens and yes, we get to pull them, carry them and generally deal with them. It’s part of how we love each other - but it’s not meant to crush us.

Jesus offers us an alternative, one which says ‘you can’t do this on your own, because you were never meant to. Involve Me, come to Me, ask Me about your goals and I’ll even give you my rest so you can accomplish them. Let me ‘yoke’ you to my plans for your life, they’re designed to fit you like a glove.’

This isn’t some self-help, self-actualisation theory, which would advocate giving up what you’re doing and finding some blissful existence free of all stresses and strains. Jesus’ own life was right in the thick of all of that. But He knew how to draw aside and find a resource in God His Father, which empowered him to get back into a life of serving so many people.

For me, that evening after work, I realised I WAS trying too hard, alone in my own strength and skills in a headlong rush from one job to the other. I needed to pause and find a better way.

We’re wired for relationship, with God (if you can go along with that) and each other. That’s how we find the energy, inspiration and motivation to get so much done.

Plympton students turn into tourists

Eight travel and tourism students at Hele’s School in Plympton have just returned from an action-packed weekend in London, where their intention was to understand how it felt to be a tourist in the city.

They assisted in the planning of the trip, seeking out the best value accommodation in the heart of the capital and looked for cost-effective transport deals to get there, eventually deciding that a coach would be the most effective means of travel.

They also investigated which tourist attractions they would like to visit, narrowing down their itinerary to Covent Garden, the London Eye, London Dungeons and Madame Tussauds, which are among the most visited attractions in London.

Ian & Marj Rossol Part of the travel and tourism course covers customer service, so the students took a particular interest in how the public were dealt with at popular tourist venues.

The students all had a great learning experience, but were exhausted on their return, having managed to pack so much in to such a short visit!

Red Cross poetry winners announced Barbara Mercy is celebrating after being announced as the overall winner of this year’s British Red Cross Plympton Bookshop Poetry competition.

More than 20 poems were submitted for this year’s competition and entrants were invited to a reading night for their poems at the bookshop.

The judges were award-winning poet Gina Connolly, bookshop manager Emma Caley and Stannator of Plympton Natalie Harrison.

Last year’s winner, Nicola Smith, scooped third place with her poem Making Marks, The Christmas Fairy by Violet Webber was chosen as runner up and Barbara Mercy’s winning entry was From the Front Line.

Plympton Youth Ambassador welcomes council tax concession for care leavers

Plympton’s Youth Ambassador, Molly Disney, has welcomed Plymouth City Council’s decision to exempt care leavers from having to pay council tax until they reach the age of 25.

Molly said: “As a young person myself the pressures of education and maturing into adult life are tough. Young people and care leavers especially will find independent living on a low budget extremely difficult.

This decision will allow those who are struggling, to successfully begin adult life with a secure basis of financial support.”

The council tax concession for care leavers was announced as part of the City’ Council’s budget plans for the Plympton Youth coming year.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Plymouth’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “Some of these young people have had an extremely difficult start in life and we want to help them ease into adult life where we can.

“Paying bills is part of growing up and becoming independent, but we all know finding an average of an extra £1,000 a year can be tough – particularly when you have no family to turn to. This will not be a big dent in the Council’s finances, but the difference it will make to those young people will be enormous.

“Care leavers often face the challenge of living independently while juggling education or employment, which can be low paid. Getting into debt and losing their tenancies are among the biggest issues in care leavers’ lives. We want to give them a leg up.”

Local Santander branches to stay

Santander has announced it is to close 140 branches across the UK - but the Plympton and Plymstock branches have not been earmarked for closure.

The branch in Plymouth City Centre’s New George Street will be shut as part of the announced closures.

Other nearby areas set to lose their Santander branch include Tavistock and Totnes.

Plympton Community Council vice-chairman Andrew Hill who was a fierce critic of NatWest’s decision to close their Plympton branch last year welcomed the decision by Santander to keep their Plympton branch open.

Evening and weekend GP appointments now available Busy people in Plymouth who struggle to get to the doctor in working hours can now see a GP during evenings and weekends.

The aim of the GP improved access service is to make it easier for people to get an appointment at a time that suits them.

The new scheme is an extension of the usual GP practice services that patients across Devon will be used to – it is not a walk-in service. Patients will still need to contact their GP practices directly to make an appointment if they want to see a GP between the longer opening hours during weekday evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

When using the improved-hours service, patients might not be able to see their usual doctor. However, the GP they see can also prescribe medication or refer the patient for further treatment if necessary.

Dr Dafydd Jones, a GP in Plympton, said: “Good access to GP services is very important and our aim is to increase the number of appointments available and extend opening times.

“We know people lead busy lives so we want to make it easier for patients to get an appointment and by making appointments available in the evenings and at weekends,

we can ensure patients can see a doctor or a nurse at a time that is more convenient for them.

“If the need isn’t urgent and the patient would prefer to see their usual GP or practice nurse, they should book an appointment with their usual practice during normal opening hours.”

Patients are advised to contact their own GP practice for more information about the improved access service and how they can make appointments.

Plympton Academy takes part in RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch

Staff, students and parents at Plympton Academy have taken part in the recent RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch.

The Academy invited students and their families to take part in the survey and submit

their results through the school.

Phoebe Hall and Josh Tucker, both aged 12, helped organise the school’s survey and collated the results. Josh said; “I didn’t know that there were so many different types of birds in our local area.”

Life Interest Trusts or Rights to Reside If you are considering placing a life interest trust in your Will, or a right for someone to reside in your property, you will need to be familiar with the difference between these rights before completing your Will.

What is a Life Interest?

A life interest is a trust. Although there are many variations the most common is where an asset (eg., a property or shares etc) are held on trust for the benefit of an individual (the life tenant) for his or her life time. The life tenant is entitled to the income generated from the trust for his or her lifetime but has no entitlement to the capital of the trust (the asset). The capital is preserved for the benefit of the remainder beneficiaries. On the death of the life tenant the capital is distributed to the remainder beneficiaries.

The Trustee of a life interest must balance the needs and interests of both the life tenant and the remainder beneficiaries when managing and investing the assets of the trust. Therefore the Trustee must invest in assets which have both a capital growth element and an income producing element and must not advantage one over the other.

This type of trust is often created in a testator’s Will where he or she wishes to financially support one individual during their lifetime but wishes to give the actual asset to another party. A typical example of this would be for a testator who has a current spouse from a second marriage and children from a first marriage. The testator would then preserve the capital for his or her children whilst providing his or her

spouse with an income for his or her life time.

What is a Right to Reside?

A right to reside is an entitlement to occupy a property for a specified time or for the life time of the beneficiary. The beneficiary’s entitlement would normally be subject to certain conditions such as, maintaining the property, paying all outgoings and keeping the property insured. The beneficiary cannot rent out the property nor is he or she entitled to receive any income from it. When the trust ends, the property is either transferred or sold and the net proceeds paid to the remainder beneficiaries.

It is also common to include in the right to residue, the ability for the Trustee to sell the property and purchase a more suitable property

for the beneficiary to live in.

This is also created in a testator’s Will where a testator provides for someone (usually the spouse) to have the use and benefit of the property for their lifetime whilst preserving the property for the benefit of another party (usually the children).

Two local men plan Brexit railway adventure

While MP's are grappling with the final details of how we leave the European Union, an Ivybridge author and his friend are finalising their plans to visit 25 of the 27 other EU countries in a period of 30 days.

Tony Rea and Mark Walker will be setting

off from Totnes train station on March 1 for their 30 day adventure on public transport.

Using a combination of trains, buses and ferries the Devon duo will visit the other EU countries to gain a greater insight into their culture and to find out what the folk in these other European countries feel about the UK's imminent departure from the EU. Tony and Mark appeared on Charlotte

Willis' Teatime Treats show on Hospital Radio recently to explain more about their upcoming adventure which could ultimately be the source of a new book. Hospital Radio plans to do a number of live link ups with Mark and Tony during the course of their travels.

As environmentalists, the duo want to make their journey by the most

environmentally friendly method available to them. They are also keen to sample local food and drink as they travel but once they eventually arrive back in the UK they will be looking forward to good old fish 'n' chips and a cuppa.

Friends of Radford Woods go wassailing

Friends of Radford Woods Group held their annual Wassailing Event at Radford Bird Hide and Orchard in Plymstock on January 13.

Visitors joined in with the traditional dipping of toast in cider and hanging it on the fruit trees - the old tradition to promote a good harvest of orchard fruit. Apple-themed activities and storytelling took place inside

the Bird Hide with more apple-themed homemade cakes being enjoyed by all. Later in the afternoon everyone was treated to an interactive demonstration by "The Old Town Twelve" Morris dancers and musicians.

Radford Woods is a local nature reserve and the Friends of Radford Woods aim to identify, conserve and enhance the natural beauty of Radford Woods for the benefit of local residents, visitors and wildlife. They also work hard to improve biodiversity and wildlife habitat in the local area, raise public awareness of the opportunities this woodland offers and encourage participation and enjoyment of the natural environment through a culture of appreciation and education. They work in partnership with the

city council, the local community and other interested parties to develop sustainable projects which reflect local need.

Local Councillor, Rebecca Smith, was one of the attendees and said this about the event: ‘It was fantastic to see the Bird Hide being used in this way on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The Friends of Radford Woods are an inspiring group of local residents who are keen to make the most of the natural environment in Plymstock and work hard to achieve it. They are always looking for more people to get involved with the work they do.’

Students had the opportunity to talk to academics, current undergraduates and PhD students to find out what it is like to study and work in STEM. The number of exhibits included Segways, computer games, chemical experiments, healthcare and marine wildlife.

Year 9 students attended a hands-on workshop exploring the wonderful area of flexagons, which are created by folding the edges of paper and joining strips of paper together to form a hexagon shape which can be turned inside out.

Year 10 students had a rather explosive session called ‘Pyromania,’ looking at the chemistry of fireworks and combustion; the workshop lived up to its name, with flames and smoke aplenty!

Some of the year 12 students learnt about paleothermometers, chemicals which record temperatures of the past and can be used to estimate the average temperatures of the Earth millions of years ago.

Other students attended a talk on past environments and climates, and how we can use plant and animal fossils in lakes and peats to understand the extinction of large mammals such as the woolly mammoth, cave bears and cave lions - all of which have been found in caves below Plymouth!

Mrs Horvath-Nimmo, deputy head of science at Hele’s, spoke on behalf of all the students and staff who took part in the day when she declared, ‘We cannot wait until next year’s Science and Technology Showcase – thank you Plymouth University for an amazing day!’

Maths Centre of Excellence unveiled

City College Plymouth’s new Maths Centre of Excellence has been unveiled to a group of stakeholders from across the city.

The college was named as one of just 21 general further education colleges in the country to receive Government funding to become a Maths Centre of Excellence. The launch gave representatives from education and business the chance to discuss plans for improving the city’s maths skills and addressing current and future skills gaps.

Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the Centre.

Over 450 students sit their Maths GCSEs at the college each year. Students who study GCSEs do so for a number of reasons: to retake and gain better grades in order to progress to higher level study or into employment; to develop their career; and for interest as part of a lifelong learning programme.

Nadia McCusker, director of quality improvement and english and maths at City College Plymouth, said: “Our lecturers are real experts in their field, making learning engaging and relevant to our students. Their innovative methods of teaching and the way they build our students’ confidence resulted in Maths GCSE students gaining an impressive 99% pass rate.”

Pavilions staff raise funds for CRY Staff at Plymouth Pavilions have raised nearly £2,500 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Championed by Stewart Woodruff, house officer at Plymouth Pavilions, and supported by colleagues, a total of £2452.90 was successfully raised for the charity.

Stewart said: “Following the sudden passing of my wife in 2013, the coroner suggested that my children have their hearts monitored. I approached CRY and since then, the support they have provided to my family and I has been fantastic.

“I nominated the charity as a way of saying thank you. I will always be grateful for everything they have done for us during such a difficult and testing time.”

To raise the funds, a 20 mile cycle ride was organised and four members of staff took part, starting from the Plymouth Pavilions and cycling to Clearbrook and back. Alongside this, a week of fancy dress took place and comedian Adam Hills agreed to a bucket collection following his performance.

Stewart continued: “I am really proud of the total amount raised and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my colleagues for getting involved and for everyone who generously donated. I hope to continue fundraising for CRY in the future.”

As such, CRY now tests over 29,000 young people each year, aged between 14 and 35.”

The Linda Mortimore School of Dance Mondays 4.15pm-8pm and Wednesdays 4.15pm-7pm. Linda trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London and teaches RAD ballet and the ISTD tap, modern and jazz.

Newly qualified social workers celebrating

The latest group of newly qualified children’s social workers have been presented with certificates of completion by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Sam Davey, at a special ceremony.

The certificates mark the successful completion of the social workers’ assessed and supported first year in practice.

Newly qualified social workers have made a significant contribution to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in the city.

The City Council is committed to supporting staff and students in their learning and development and has created a dedicated Academy of Social Work to oversee this. The academy has run a successful Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme for a number of years and recognises the achievement as significant through award ceremonies held once a year.

Melissa Carter, one of the newly qualified social workers said: “The ASYE year has been invaluable to my career as a social worker and has been a fantastic experience and thanks to receiving incredible support and training from the academy, my manager and my team, I have had opportunities to increase my knowledge, skills and confidence as well as my understanding of the role

Pins & Needles Knitting Club 2.30pm (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month). This traditional hobby has bounced right back up in the popularity charts. People of varying ages are now picking up knitting needles and are all most welcome to come and join this group, which hand-produce and send knitted goods such as jumpers, blankets and hats for poor children in two areas of Romania and are sometimes asked to produce adult hats for Shekinah Mission, asylum seekers and refugees. One of the members makes cardigans, hats and small blankets for the Neo-natal Unit at Derriford Hospital. It doesn’t matter if you have been knitting for years, or have never seen a ball of wool before - the group will openly welcome you and share their knowledge and skills! Andrew Savery has more than 30 years of experience in the food industry and currently serves up traditional English food with a twist at the First and Last Bistro in Ermington.

Spotting the potential in a young man working part-time in the kitchen, Andrew contacted City College Plymouth to set him up as an apprentice.

He’s now becoming an integral part of the operation, enjoying the experience he’s gaining at a quality bistro while learning valuable new skills at the College.

It is this approach Andrew believes the wider industry needs to embrace if it is to fill a growing ‘black hole’ of emerging talent willing to don chef whites.

Andrew said: “The industry has this high profile on TV, which should be great for recruitment, but really it’s a victim of its own success.

Andrew added: “We must invest in these young people for the future of our industry.

When I retire, I want to be able to go out for a good meal - not settle for something deep fried and cooked with an automatic timer because those crucial chef skills have been lost.

These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2.

Level 3 Sport student at Duchy College, Chantel Whiting, who holds an impressive professional boxing record, has been chosen to be an ambassador for Devon Girls Can. Devon Girls Can is a campaign to inspire women and girls to take their first steps towards leading a more active lifestyle.

Rising star Chantel, who previously studied at Tavistock College, was last year selected to represent the country after impressing the England coaches at a national competition. She is now aiming to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

“I was approached to be an ambassador for Devon Girls Can, something I’m really proud to be involved in,” said Chantel.

Each ambassador focuses on a sport which is important to them and Chantel is working with Women Boxing in Plymouth, holding classes

twice a week.

“For any women who may be unsure if it is for them or not, I would just say give it a shot.

You just need to find a sport that is right for you. Sport is great for you in so many ways,” added Chantel.

Year 13 A level students who left Plympton Academy last year came back recently for an evening of celebration.

The event was held in the school’s prestigious new performing arts building, The Morpurgo Studios.

Returning students shared their success stories with members of staff. Many have gone on to university to study a range of subjects, including musical theatre, criminology and history.

Others are completing higher level apprenticeships or have gone into full time employment.

At the event, also attended by family and friends, the former students received certificates to mark their A Level and B Tech successes, as well as a popular ‘guess the student’ section with comments from the pastoral and teaching team.

Current performing arts students entertained everyone with a variety of dance and music.

Gables appeal for winter heating help

Each year Gables Farm Dogs and Cats Home takes in nearly 1000 unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats.

This year they have seen an increase in the number of vulnerable puppies and kittens needing their help. During the winter months they use lots of donated duvets and blankets to help keep the animals warm and cosy, but their heating bills increase dramatically. There are 81 cat pens and 82 dog kennels to keep warm, which costs over £5000 each year.

Dartmoor Rambling Club The Dartmoor Rambling Club is a long established Rambling Club based in Plymouth. We have a regular programme of walks on alternate Wednesdays and at some weekends. The Wednesday walks generally use public transport from Plymouth City Centre to the start of the walk. Wednesday walks are usually about 8 to 10 miles on Dartmoor or on the coast and are taken at a pace to suit the participants. Defence Secretary underlines key future role for Plymouth Plymouth and the South West will continue to play a central role on defence, according to Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring Plymouth and the wider South West continue to play a key role in the future of the UK’s armed forces, while criticising Labour’s defence policies.

The Defence Secretary spoke at a dinner in Plymouth attended by around 175 Conservative Party representatives, including MPs, councillors, officers and members.

Mr Williamson announced recently that all eight of the Royal Navy’s next-generation Type 26 frigates would be based in Devonport, helping to secure its status as the largest naval base in western Europe.

He has also confirmed that amphibious assault ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark would be retained while 3 Commando Brigade of the Royal Marines would stay in Plymouth.

“Plymouth is synonymous with the armed forces and I’m determined to keep it that way,” said Mr Williamson.

“With threats increasing and becoming more complex worldwide, Plymouth will continue to play a central role in the defence of the UK by homing our next-generation Type 26 frigates.

“The defence sector is vital for the regional economy, employing thousands of people and supporting hundreds of local businesses.

“Indeed, the Ministry of Defence spends over £5 billion in the South West - more than any other part of the country.”

Mr Williamson praised Plymouth’s ‘proud record of support for military veterans’ and the efforts of local MP Johnny Mercer to bring the issue to prominence.

“Plymouth continues to be at the forefront when it comes to supporting veterans, including through the Armed Forces Covenant, the city’s innovative approach to housing and the Veterans Care Navigation Service, which provides a single point of contact for veterans seeking assistance,” he said.

“Johnny Mercer has led from the front and, working closely with the veteran community, local authorities, charities and the health and social care sector, is carrying through on his pledge to make Plymouth a centre of excellence for veterans care.”

Mr Williamson said the government would continue to meet the NATO commitment to spend at least 2% of GDP on defence and was putting in an additional £1.8 billion over

2018/19 and 2019/20 to support the armed forces.

He also confirmed commitments to renew Trident and provide the best possible support for serving personnel, families and veterans.

“I’m very proud of the brave men and women who make up our world-class military, in the South West and beyond, and we must ensure they have the capabilities they need to keep us safe,” Mr Williamson said.

“That’s why we have the biggest defence budget in Europe and the second largest in NATO. “On the other hand, Jeremy Corbyn and Labour would put the security of the country at risk.”

New ships should be based in Plymouth, say MPs Two days after his visit to Plymouth, Gavin Williamson announced that the Government is to purchase two Littoral Strike Ships, as part of the Royal Marines’ amphibious armoury.

Littoral Ships are globally deployable, multi-role vessels able to conduct a wide range of operations, from crisis support to war-fighting.

They would support the future Commando force and be forward deployed at exceptionally high readiness and able to respond at a moment’s notice, bringing the fight from sea to land.

Rob said: “I really enjoy counselling and feel I have finally found my calling! I am offering something I call ‘autism informed’ counselling because I draw on my working experience, but also respect the reality that people with autism are all different and are treated as individuals.”

Janet Wise, another director of Working Well With Autism, said: “Our work over the last four years has shown us that people with autism can experience challenging situations at many stages in their lives.

“This is often the result of the challenging world around them that does not always respect people as individuals but expects everyone to dance to ‘just one tune’. People with autism dance to many tunes!

“This is what we have witnessed while running our People’s Health Trust funded project the Plymouth Autism Hub. We have been delighted by the success of the Hub where we welcome between 10 and 20 people every week. Its purpose is to offer a safe space, with a low arousal environment staffed by people who understand autism, and help to combat the social isolation and loneliness that can so easily occur.”

Rob said: “While the Hub offers great social meet up opportunities we have seen that some people require more help and the expertise of a qualified counsellor which is where I can now offer more support.

“The problem we face, however, is that many people with autism who would benefit, sometimes in a life changing way, are either on a very low income or accessing benefits so can’t afford to pay. In response we are looking for funding opportunities and are hoping to begin a Crowdfunding bid later in the year.”

Rob is also looking to widen the scope of his counselling practice and is particularly interested in working with displaced persons such as refugees and asylum seekers.

Litter pick legends!

Fifty volunteers joined forces with the team from Clean Our Patch to carry out a big litter pick in Plympton.

Their incredible efforts led to the collection of an incredible total of 115 bags of rubbish. More litter picks are now planned in Plympton.
