Sherford Life Dartmoor Zoo welcomes two lionesses We undoubtedly live in a world of ‘fake news’. So much so that we might find ourselves asking whether we can believe anything.
Two years ago the Washington Post had to make an awkward apology: having run a news story reporting that a number of websites were By Revd Tom Brassil producing fake news under the watchful eye of the Russian government, they then had to admit that their source had turned out to be fake! Good journalism is very important, because even in a world of so-called ‘alternative facts’, there is still truth to be told. We still want to know what is really happening in the world. One of the reasons I look forward to receiving the Chronicle through my door each month is because I want to know what is really going on in my local area. Of course, it is easier to trust the reporting of the Chronicle than that of the national newspapers because we are close enough to these local stories to be able to check the truth for ourselves. We can talk to those neighbours, councillors and other community leaders who appear in the pictures and hear it all first-hand if we want to. In the run-up to Easter perhaps we have a very particular question about the truth of a story: can we believe that a man really came back from the dead as the Christians claim? It seems pretty unbelievable! And that is why good reporting is so important. How could we be sure about this story? By tracing it back to the first-hand reports, the eyewitnesses. Interestingly, that is what Luke tells us he did right at the beginning of his book in the Bible (see Luke 1:1-4). And that is also what Paul encouraged his readers to do in his first letter to the Corinthians. Having said that Jesus’ resurrection was a fact of first importance, he then wrote that the risen Jesus ‘appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living.’ (1 Corinthians 15:5-6). It is almost as if he was saying, ‘If you don’t believe me, ask them!’ Bringing journalism back to the present day, investigative journalist Lee Strobel once set out on a mission to prove Christianity wrong. But the more he looked into the events of the first Easter, the more he became convinced that the evidence held up and the story was true. If you want to read about his investigations, pick up his little book, The Case for Easter. And if you would like to look at some of the evidence for yourself, why not join us at Sherford Community Church at 10am on Easter Sunday? As a bonus, we’ll be hosting an Easter Egg hunt straight after the service. We’d love to see you there! If you have any questions about Sherford life, or if you would like to chat more about the true facts underpinning Easter, please contact me at tom@ sherfordchurch.net
African lionesses, Kimya and Nikita, have arrived at Dartmoor Zoo from Longleat Safari Park. Ten-year-old sisters, Kimya and Nikita, were introduced to Dartmoor Zoo in March after travelling from Longleat in Wiltshire, where they have lived since 2011, after being introduced from Blackpool Zoo. In the wild, the population of African Lions has decreased by 43% in 21 years, and they were declared ‘vulnerable’ in 1996 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The public will soon be able to see the stunning big cats at the zoo, once keepers are comfortable with how the lionesses have acclimatised to their new surroundings. A spokesman for Dartmoor Zoo said: “We’re delighted with how the two lionesses are
settling in so far, and are looking forward to slowly introducing them to our male African lion Jasiri in the future. “At this stage, Kimya and Nikita are getting to know their new home and acclimatising to the new surroundings. Jasiri’s enclosure is next door which allows them to see, hear and smell each other. The keepers will closely monitor the lions and make a judgement about when it is appropriate to introduce them. “Our priority is to educate and inspire the general public about wildlife conservation and improve captive animal management by providing a safe environment for animals under threat in the wild. “Our keepers are incredibly passionate about what they do and believe that being a resource for the public to learn about animal

behaviour and the value of conservation in the world is highly important.” Dartmoor Zoo was established in 2007 when Benjamin Mee and his family bought an ailing zoo. Since then Ben, his family and team have built the Zoo into the popular tourist attraction it is today. Ben wrote a book about his experience and in 2011 it was made into the Hollywood Film ‘We Bought a Zoo’ starring Matt Damon. In 2014 the Zoo became a charity, of which Ben is chief executive. Today the Zoo is heavily involved in research, conservation and education projects to promote the welfare of animals and to enrich both the lives of humans and animals. The locations of four new wildflower meadows in Plymouth, which help local bee and butterfly populations to thrive, have now been announced.
Plymouth City Council has identified four new sites across the city to establish new wildflower meadows, which will be prepared and planted this month, when ground conditions are good for sowing, and will be flowering by the summer. The sites will be: Staddiscombe Road green space; Teat’s Hill; Delamere Road and Tamar Bridge roundabout. They will also improve existing wildflower meadow sites at North Cross and Derry’s Cross to make them better for wildlife and add more colour to the local landscape. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “I am delighted to be able to announce the four new locations where we will be expanding our bee corridors and wildflower meadows in Plymouth. “Bees play a crucial role in our lives including food production as they pollinate important crops. “Wildflower meadows and bee corridors can provide an important source of pollen and nectar for pollinating insects, and habitat and food, directly and indirectly for many other species. They also have been shown to positively impact health and wellbeing as they are a beautiful addition to our urban landscapes.” “The council has also been working with seed suppliers to develop a new, longer flowering seed mix that will be trialled this year.” Further sites will continue to be identified by the council, working with local communities, that can be converted to wildflower meadows to expand the network of sites in coming years. More information on Plymouth’s wildflower meadows is on the Plymouth City Council website at www.plymouth.gov.uk

Record-breaking Men’s Day Out crowd for St Luke’s
It was a sight more dazzling than the day’s bright sunshine – a record multitude of men on the move at Men’s Day Out, the annual guys-only gathering in aid of much-loved local charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.
Over 2,200 big-hearted men - the biggest crowd for the event since its launch in 2014 walked the streets and the South West Coastal Path to raise vital funds for the specialist end of life care St Luke’s provides for terminally ill people at home, in hospital and at its specialist unit at Turnchapel. As they pounded the pavements, they were cheered on by many, including passing Daniel Turton motorists tooting their horns in solidarity with the charity whose care and support helps families across Plymouth, South West Devon and South East Cornwall at the most vulnerable of times. Sponsored by IU Energy, which has supported Men’s Day Out since it began, the largest men-only charity event in the South West (and probably the UK!) saw guys gather with their mates for the charity walk, with pitstops along the way and before the rugby match between Plymouth Albion RFC and Birmingham Mosely, and a well-earned pasty and pint. While the lively event was - as always - full of banter, never far from the men’s thoughts were the many lost loved ones in whose memory they took to the streets. Among the fancy dress outfits, ranging from Cornish serving maids to traditional Mexican attire, was a sea of tee-shirts emblazoned with the names of mums, dads, sisters, brothers and treasured friends all being celebrated by
those determined to make a difference for the charity that cared so compassionately for their special ones. For Daniel Turton from Plympton, the day was all about remembering his much-loved mum, Marlene, who was looked after by St Luke’s at Turnchapel in the last weeks of her life, in 2012. He said: “Mum was such a fantastic person and it was very hard losing her, but seeing the amazing care she received in the beautiful surroundings at Turnchapel and getting to spend precious time with her there has been a big comfort to me and my family. “Sadly, government funding for St Luke’s is just not enough – that’s why me and my friends do the walk. We’re the lucky ones being here to help raise money for people like my mum who really need the specialist care.” Also enjoying the electric atmosphere was Darren Brown from Ham, whose father David was cared for at home by the St Darren Brown Luke’s team. Walking with a band of loyal friends he’s had since his days at Mount Wise Primary School 40 years ago, Darren said: “Not only did Dad’s nurse James give brilliant medical care, he listened and provided support for the whole family. “Now my mum-in-law is also being looked after by St Luke’s at home, and we have

peace of mind knowing that the care being given is the best of the best. To me, every St Luke’s nurse is worth a million pounds so I’m more than glad to do my bit.” Joined by his brother and friends, Jamie Lake of Plympton stepped out in memory of his much-loved father David Robson, who had Huntington’s disease and was cared for by St Luke’s at Turnchapel in his last days in 2016. Jamie said: “It’s been such a fantastic turn out and an amazing atmosphere. What a great way to be able to thank St Luke’s for all they did for my family and to remember happy times we had with Dad. Everyone was buzzing –and looking forward to next year already!” Nina Wearne, community and events fundraising manager at St Luke’s, said: “Men’s Day Out is always a highlight and this year we’ve been even more blown away with the record-breaking number taking part. “It’s been heart-warming seeing so many men band together and have a great time, remembering loved ones and doing their bit to ensure St Luke’s can be there for the family, friends, colleagues and neighbours who could need our specialist care in the future. “Since the event started in 2014 it has grown from 574 participants to over 2,200 and we’re on track this year to raise more than enough to provide a full package of care at home for over 100 local families. “A huge thank you to everyone who took part and all who helped us put on such a great event – our sponsors IU Energy, plus Plymouth Albion RFC, Salcombe Brewery, Burt’s Crisps and of course our amazing volunteers.”

A new scheme aimed at reducing pressure on the police 101 nonemergency service is about to go live in Plympton and Plymstock after a successful pilot in three other areas of Plymouth.
Improving Lives Plymouth who are running the project in partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police are looking to recruit a number of volunteer Community Champions in Plympton and Plymstock so the scheme can be rolled out in the eastern part of Plymouth. Project co-ordinator Jo Higson said: “We are looking to address issues that currently the police get quite a lot of calls about but they are not the best service to deal with them. This is about ensuring people are signposted to the best service to help first time round.” Successful candidates to be community champions are likely to be people currently living, working or volunteering in Plympton or Plymstock and who are the sort of people than someone would go to if they had a question or wanted support. Typical issues community champions would be approached about are concerns about a neighbour, such as an elderly person who hasn’t been seen for a while, noise issues, rowdy behaviour, how graffiti can be cleaned up, what to do if hazardous needles are noticed in a park and suchlike. The community champions scheme has already had a successful start in the Devonport, Stonehouse and Stoke areas of Plymouth where a network of 44 volunteers have taken on community champion roles and it is hoped the scheme will become equally successful in the eastern part of Plymouth. Community champions will receive a day’s training, a toolkit of information as well as other support in the form of networking meetings with other champions, bi-monthly speakers at meetings and support as needed from the scheme co-ordinator. Anyone interested in becoming a community champion should e-mail jo.higson@improvinglivesplymouth. org.uk There is also an audio interview with Jo Higson explaining more about the scheme online in the latest edition of the Plympton Podcast.

It requires a large floor space to accommodate the main gym equipment, while changing rooms, offices and storage space will be added. The new gym will feature a range of cardiovascular equipment - rowing, running and cycling, as well as weights. If you fancy trying your luck by cudgel playing – there’s a silver cup in it for you. Or can you wrestle for a purse of money? And if there are 13 smart dashing men out there they can win a hat by jingling.
At least you could if you were going to the Plympton St Maurice fair in 1807. Now there are more familiar activities, but the tradition of the centuries old Fair still goes on - and it’s still held on the historic Castle Green. Over the years the busy volunteers of St Maurice have extended the local celebrations to ensure there really is something for all ages and interests. The Midsummer Festival, held on Friday June 14 until Sunday June 16 is the result of months of hard work and the volunteers are constantly thinking up new events to keep the event fresh. Duncan Bray, one of the organisers said: “This year the Festival kicks off on Friday night with the 50-strong Sir Joshua Reynolds choir performing ‘As Long As I Have Music.’ “And this year, for the first time, they’ll be performing at the historic Plympton St Maurice Guildhall. “The Civic Association, who organise the Festival, and Friends of the Guildhall (FROGS) are working together to raise money from the event and ensure the refurbished Guildhall will do the choir proud.” The performance starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and are available on the night. It’s all hands to the pump from dawn on Saturday June 15 until noon when the Lamb Feast opens. Volunteers prepare the Castle
Green at sun up. Gazebos house endless crafts, cakes, puppet shows, refreshments, plants and kids entertainment. There will be a dog show, human fruit machine (honestly!) magic displays, classic cars, veggie food, hot dogs with delicious Gribbles bangers, swing boats, archery, martial arts displays, dancing, brass bands and even fortune tellers – the list goes on. And of course there’s the legendary hot lamb baps that give the Saturday event its name. Sunday June 16 is a fantastic afternoon suited to gardeners or people who are just plain curious about what goes on behind the façade of the medieval village. From 2pm until 6 pm people come from far and wide to
enjoy the historic backdrop of St Maurice. And historic it is. There are allotments in the castle moat. Gardens with old piggeries, gardens with chunks of mediaeval Plympton Priory. Small, perfectly formed gardens imaginatively laid out to make the most of their size. Then big walled ones – some with trees that are 400 years old and most with a treasure hunt that kids can enjoy. Tickets £5, kids free. Buy from The Guildhall, Fore Street, Dark Street Lane and the bottom of George Lane. And they can enjoy a special treasure hunt in various gardens. And before you even think of enjoying a cream tea in the Church Hall you’ve got to do a twirl round the Guildhall. The Plympton Art Group do their best to keep the reputation of St Maurice alive by their art exhibition. Because it was in the very village that you walk that Sir Joshua Reynolds grew up. Sir Josh was the first President of the Royal Academy. Charles Lock Eastlake grew up in the village and became President of the Royal Academy and the first director of the National Gallery. Benjamin Haydon and James Northcote, also local lads, went on to become leading 19th century artists. But let’s return to the entire Midsummer Festival and remember that none of this would happen without the volunteers – not just from the village, but the sponsors, such as The Lyneham Inn, Otter Nurseries and many others who work behind the scenes to ensure the day is a success. “We give all the money we raise to charity after we’ve paid our costs” said Duncan. “So it’s a really worthwhile day – and before we know it we’re planning it all over again!”

Warm welcome promised from all at Oreston Bowling Club
A haven of peace and quiet tucked behind the children’s playground in Dean Cross Road (opposite Kenley’s nursery) is Plymstock’s closely guarded secret: Oreston and District Bowling Club.
There is ample parking in the adjacent car park and the Number 2A and 5 buses run along Dean Cross Road. This small, friendly club welcomes and encourages ladies and gentlemen of all abilities. The club emphasises the friendly companionship of bowls and encourages members to play as often as they would like. On Sunday April 28 the club is having an open afternoon from 1.30pm to 4pm so please come along, meet some of our members and have a go at bowls. All the equipment will be provided but please wear flat shoes without heels. The club plays in a league and also has friendly games against other clubs so all abilities are catered for. The ladies generally play on weekday afternoons while the gentlemen play weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons. On some Sunday afternoons the club joins together to play a sociable mixed friendly game against other clubs. There is for those not so competitive, plenty of opportunity to spend a quiet morning or afternoon, if there is no match, having a practice ‘roll-up’. What better way to enjoy a summer afternoon! The green is owned and maintained by the Plymouth City Council and the club are grateful to the green keepers for providing us with a very good ‘playable’ green which drains very well when the weather is wet. Unlike cricketers, who go in as soon as it rains, bowlers are made of stronger stuff and may continue to play a match in the rain! The club hope to see prospective players on Sunday April 28 but for further information or enquiries please contact Vicky Hingston on 07966 51212. Anyone who is interested but is unable to make that date, please give Vicky a ring and other arrangements will be made.

Celebrating students’ love of literature Teachers dressed as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory characters
Make your
Students dressed as the Hungry Caterpillar
voice heard
Having been inspired to write through her own teenage years, Holly passed on the flame with two immersive creative writing workshops. Annie, one of the Year 8 students who attended one of the workshops said: “Holly Smale’s workshop was great! It was really fascinating and fantastic to meet an author who showed me that stories can be whatever you want them to be!” The Reading Festival acts as a way of encouraging students to read, not just within a school environment, but also reading for pleasure. Research in recent years has suggested that young people who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in literary based subjects than those who don’t read for pleasure, but also often have a broader vocabulary and increased general knowledge. It has also been said that reading can encourage a better understanding of other cultures, improvements in memory or focus and can also help to release pent up stress and tension. Plymstock School headteacher, Rob Diment said: "Reading is so important for young people because it exposes them to a wealth of places, characters, social situations and issues that supports their personal and social development. In essence, it contributes to supporting them to become well-rounded 21st Century citizens. "We try hard at Plymstock School to make reading something that you do for pleasure because you want to! Our Reading Festival is just one of the many things we do to create enjoyment and excitement about engaging with literature.”

Plymstock School celebrated its annual Reading Festival with a variety of literary activities for young people. During the week, the students were given the opportunity to attend book fairs at lunchtime in the school library which had been transformed into a homage to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. They were also given time dedicated purely to literature during 60-minute reading slots within their classes and they were encouraged to enjoy music whilst reading in the library during lunch breaks. However, it was on the Thursday that the main event took place, with the focus on World Book Day, a national campaign to encourage reading for pleasure. This campaign is the world’s largest based around ensuring every child and young person in the country can own a book of their own, especially those who otherwise may not have access to them. As part of the event, students and staff were invited to dress up as their favourite literary characters, with highlights including a group costume of the hungry caterpillar as well as a detailed recreation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory characters. The school was lucky to welcome author Holly Smale to speak to the students about her own novels and, more generally, the importance of reading as a whole. Her teen fiction series 'Geek Girl' has sold 3.4 million copies worldwide in 29 languages and won the prestigious Waterstone's Best Teen Book Award. This series now includes six novels, three Geek Girl Special novellas and a Geek Girl short story, and Holly has recently followed this by launching her exciting new teen series 'The Valentine'. She explained how she found inspiration in everything from her own experiences of bullying as a young girl to her mother's own love of poetry and encouraged the young people through speaking about these experiences that contributed to her love of storytelling.

WALK IT EVENT RETURNS TO PLYMOUTH Plymouth is one of nine cities up and down the country staging the WALK IT event to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
This year the event starts and finishes on The Hoe on Saturday July 19 and organisers are hoping that the fabulous turn out last year will be repeated - or even bettered this year. Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000. People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt. Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis. Walkers will explore the city’s sights before returning to the event village at The Hoe for a great afternoon of fun, food and entertainment. Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day. For information or to register visit www. crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/walkit

Sherford children celebrate World Book Day donation Children at Sherford Vale School will soon be able to enjoy reading a collection of new books thanks to a donation from Taylor Wimpey. The homebuilder has gifted £100 to the Sherford-based school to mark World Book Day, which took place in March.
Now in its 22nd year, World Book Day is a celebration of reading and aims to encourage children and young adults to come together to explore and enjoy literature. To mark the occasion, pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters. Helen Tipping, headteacher at Sherford Vale School, said: “Reading is such an important life skill and something that we encourage all of our pupils to do more of. “Having new books to get stuck into helps to keep up an enthusiasm for reading and we would like to thank Taylor Wimpey for their kind donation. We can’t wait to add to our library and share new stories with each other.” Melissa Langton, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Exeter, said: “Books are a fantastic way for children to learn about the world around them and to feed their imaginations. “We’re proud to offer a donation to Sherford Vale to help them to celebrate World Book Day and hope that the new books will be enjoyed for years to come.” The donation of book vouchers to Sherford Vale School is one of the many ways in which Taylor Wimpey is supporting the local communities in which it builds. Sherford is a brand new community on the outskirts of Plymouth with a range of facilities and homes to suit everyone, from first time buyers to families looking to expand.

Popular festival where unity is celebrated
The Rev Osee Ntavuka, of All Nations Ministries (ANM), a multiethnic Christian Church and charity organisation based in Catherine Street, leads the team that organises the popular Unity Festival, held annually on Plymouth Hoe since 2009.
This year’s event, on the weekend of June 22 and 23, is set to be a 10th anniversary celebration to remember. The family-friendly free festival, also known as U-Fest, brings together people of all ages, from all backgrounds and communities for a music and culture extravaganza that transforms Plymouth Hoe into a place to experience something out of the ordinary. The weekend will see live bands on the outdoor main stage, acoustic sets in the tent, kids activities including face-painting, storytelling and bouncy castles, and for when

you’re hungry there is café seating, catering vendors and table displays for community associations and churches. Pastor Osee’s own experiences led him to seek to bring people together - he is a survivor of the terrible genocide that occurred 25 years ago in Rwanda and knows only too well where extreme ethnic divisions can lead. “I escaped three times from being killed,” said Osee, “I would say miraculously. I came as a refugee to Plymouth in 2000, and encountered the love and friendship of people from a local church, who welcomed me with open arms and supported me and my family.” Pastor Osee and wife Mary Louise have four children, two boys and two girls , but they lost many members of their wider family in the genocide, including Osee’s parents. He not only survived but he has since met his mother’s killer, and those who tried to kill him, and forgiven them. He sees forgiveness as the way to healing the wounds and scars of the past in Rwanda. “We want to reach out to all communities with love,” he said. Twice a year Osee and a team of more

than 35 doctors, surgeons and support staff from the UK and Europe travel to Rwanda, Mozambique and Malawi, performing lifechanging, and in some cases life-saving operations. Education, health and social care all play a part in carrying out ‘love in action’ through the work of the organisation Rwanda Legacy of Hope (www.rwandalegacyofhope.com). In Plymouth, ANM (www. allnationsministries. info) offers support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers including translation and interpretation, as well as generally available counselling,
training, youth and befriending services. They also run a programme that provides food for homeless people. Pastor Osee is keen to thank all those who partner with their work, including the festival; like most community-centred activities it relies on the goodwill and expertise of volunteers as well as the good offices of the local council and business community. Unity Festival, with all its vibrancy, colour, music and fun is a natural fit for a team that is motivated to bring communities together – June 22 and 23 on Plymouth Hoe looks like a weekend to mark on the calendar.

Antiques and cream teas at Kitley House Hotel raise funds for Dame Hannahs Dame Hannahs teamed up with Kitley House Hotel and Bonhams Auctioneers last week for a very popular fundraising event. The Antiques and Collectibles Valuations event was organised by Dame Hannahs Ivybridge Supporter Group and raised over £700 for the charity. Guests enjoyed an afternoon of antiques and collectibles valuations and cream teas in the elegant library at Kitley. They each took along three items to be valued by Charles Lanning and Sam Tuke from Bonhams who kindly gave up their
afternoon to take part in the event. Hannah Lavell, a young adult from Hannahwood, gave a very informative and inspiring talk about her life at Dame Hannahs and helped with the raffle draw and presentation of prizes. Mary Watts, chair of Dame Hannahs Ivybridge Supporter Group, said: “Thank you to everyone involved in another fabulous event at Kitley House Hotel particularly to the Kitley team for their generosity and in superbly hosting us once again and to Charles and Sam from Bonhams for generously supporting us by giving their time free of charge. “It was fantastic that Hannah, one of our young adults at Hannahwood, was able to be with us. Her speech about her life at Hannahs and about making the most of life was so very powerful. She is an amazing example to us all. “We were also delighted to see so many supporters at the event and to be able to share and celebrate the wonderful work of the Dame Hannahs family.”

Seeing wildlife flourishing in your garden is quite a wonderful sight. With the bee population still declining, it is so important now more than ever to plant flowers that will encourage them to feed on the nectar, and collect the pollen which is used to turn into honey to feed the young bee larvae. The larvae that are chosen to become future ‘queen bees’ are fed with ‘royal jelly’, which is honey produced by young female worker bees and incorporates not only the pollen but also chemical secretions from their glands. So what can you do to encourage bees to visit? For starters, you can plant a plant. These are the top three plants from Plymouth Garden Centre for attracting bees to the garden: Salvia You can often see salvias covered in bees in the evening – perhaps it’s bee dinner-time! Bees can see the colour purple more vividly than any other colour and this will attract them in their numbers. Easy to grow, hardy and colourful. Perfect for a garden border and containers. Alstromeria Despite their exotic appearance, they are hardy down to -12 degrees centigrade. A surprisingly easy plant to look after, which flowers from spring throughout summer. Alstromeria is one of the few plants that has nectar guides (the markings on the flower) that are visible to the human eye as well as the bee; bees see colours on the UV spectrum, which some people think the impressionist artist Claude Monet could also see. Digitalis - The Foxglove A classic flower for the cottage or wildflower garden. A particular favourite for the longtongued bumblebee, its large flower head and ‘landing strip pattern’ on the inside of the flower is designed to draw the attention of a passing bee and guide it to the nectar within. Despite its beauty it is poisonous to humans or pets. Get Children Involved! Not only can children help plant bee-attracting flowers, they can easily build their own little bee house with just a few canes tied together and placed in a sheltered, secure spot. Plymouth Garden Centre also sells houses perfectly suited to butterflies, lacewings and ladybirds - children will watch in awe as insects fill these houses and create their own outdoor home.

To try to make things easy for beginners or those who might feel overwhelmed, Plymouth Garden Centre has a range of tub and basket plants ‘Proven Winners’. The Proven Winners consist of three ‘recipes’, each recipe contains three plants: Bermuda Skies consists of a Surfinia Salmon, Lobelia Blue White Eye and a Calibrachoa Superbells Lemon Slice. All fired up consists of Calibrachoa Superbells Orange, Nemesia Sunsatia Pomelo and Verbena Scarlet Lace. Purple haze consists of Surfinia Bordeaux, Surfinia Royal Velvet and Verbena Lilac Blue. Each of these plants has gone through rigorous trials and tests to determine their ease of growth, robustness, weather resistance, vigour and flower power. Due to this, the plants are of the highest quality and put on a fantastic display right through the summer.

Coun Rebecca Smith speaking in the Climate Change debate on 18th March 2019 What a difference a year makes. This time last year I was working against the clock to get to as many households as possible in the run up to the Local Elections. I think I knocked on between 65 and 70% of homes in Radford Ward! And what a year it’s been. I’ve loved meeting many residents - young and old, dealing with problems with local services, supporting local community groups and promoting things going on around the area. Thank you for having me! We had our last full council meeting in the middle of March and I was able to give a speech about Climate Change something many young people have been striking about. It was good to be able to speak about the local initiatives taking place to help us tackle pollution and climate change. I also raised many of the things being done already to reduce carbon emissions. However, I also spoke about the importance of keeping going on campaigning locally and nationally to ensure we have an Earth we can all live in for the whole of our lives and our children and grandchildren beyond us. This debate was the first one I’ve been lobbied on by local residents so it was good to be able to speak up about the issue. A couple of weekends ago I met a number of Plymstock residents at the monthly ‘Tea Dance with a Twist’ which takes place at the Guildhall in the City Centre. It’s a really life-giving event, enjoyed by people from across the city. Like me, a number of people go along on their own and everyone is incredibly friendly. Why not give one a go? On Sunday May 26, there will be a very special Tea Dance on Plymouth Hoe too. As part of the commemorations to mark 100 years since the UK’s first female MP, Lady Nancy Astor, took her seat representing Plymouth Sutton, there is going to be a Tea Dance on the Hoe. Lady Astor was renowned for joining in the war time dances on the Hoe and we’re hoping for sunny weather and that this Tea Dance will be an excuse for the community to come together to dance and have fun! Keep an eye out in the press (including this paper) for more info or drop me a line! I’m not up for election this year so all services continue as before! If you’re a Plymstock Radford resident and need my support, email me on rebecca.smith@ plymouth.gov.uk or give me a call on 07825034970. Or find me on Facebook @ CllrRebeccaSmith.
David Draffan, service director for economic growth and Council Leader Tudor Evans in one of the new cinema auditoriums Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans enjoyed a sneak peek from the top of the Drake Circus Leisure Development as part of a topping out ceremony in the sky bar. The development is set to open later this year and create a new dining and entertainment destination for both residents and visitors to Plymouth. Council leader Tudor Evans took in the amazing views from the ‘sky bar’ – which is 32 metres above the ground and is now wind and watertight. Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “This has been a seriously impressive build. “This is going bring more people into the city centre – at night as well as during the day, it’s going to be somewhere people can catch a film, eat a meal and enjoy a drink – and it’s going to have cracking views across the city. “Cities need to keep reinventing themselves, keep offering something new to attract people – and this is exactly the sort of project that helps us do that.” The complex will house a 12 screen Cineworld cinema, 15 restaurants and bars, 420 car park spaces as well as a sky bar above the cinema to capture stunning views of the city and its coastline. The new cinema will incorporate state of the art audio and visual technology with screens ranging in size from an 80 seat to a giant 450 seat IMAX auditoria. Recent work on site included the concrete pours for the cinemas as well as installing windows on the ground floor. The scheme is expected to create 350 permanent jobs, as well as a large number of people employed in the construction. David Pollock, head of major retail developments at British Land PLC, said: “Topping

June there will be a full day CPD awareness raising workshop hosted by MIND in Plymouth. It has been developed for counsellors and those who listen professionally who would benefit from understanding more about autism. The workshop will offer insight into how autism impacts the lives of those who live with it and especially how autism affects communication and relationships. The workshop will be interactive offering strategies to help attendees adjust their counselling, helping and listening skills to better challenge our current disabling world. Janet Wise, facilitator and director of Working Well With Autism, said: “Autism is a hidden disability and many people who counsel or work in the listening professions might not know they are dealing with
a person with autism. We very much want to open the way for counsellors to understand how to work better with people and their loved ones with autism – offering insights and learning that can be put into practice straight away.” To find out more about any of these events contact Janet and Rob at www.workingwellwithautism.org or email janet@workingwellwithautism.org The Plymouth Drake Foundation is currently offering grants of £200 to charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises who want to provide training for their staff and this might prove useful for those wanting to raise their staff awareness of autism. Andrew Hill being presented with his award Former Stannator of Plympton and Plympton Podcast founder Andrew Hill has picked up a prestigious broadcasting award. He was named as the bronze winner in the Male Presenter of the Year category of the 2019 National Hospital Radio Awards held in Stoke-on-Trent on March 30. "A friendly treasure" is how the judges summed him up. One said: "There’s something about the way Andrew talks that’s truly remarkable – especially when story telling. I like the way he uses the conversation he’s had to tell the story." Andrew has been broadcasting on Hospital Radio Plymouth for 36 years and currently presents a weekend request show as well as a series featuring local music called "Songs of the Westcountry". He also founded the Plympton Podcast in 2013. Andrew said: "It's always good to brighten up somebody's day in hospital by meeting them and finding out what they'd like to listen to. Sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge when they can't remember the name of the song and you only have a couple of words or a line from the lyrics to go on, but I usually manage to find what it is they are referring to. "You don't do it for the recognition, but it's always nice to get an award when it happens. This is now a trio of bronzes I've picked up in the male presenter category over the years." Another Plympton resident who broadcasts on Hospital Radio, Charlotte Willis, reached the final ten shortlisted entrants in the Best Speech Package category for an interview she did with Ivybridge author Tony Rea about the centenary of the end of WW1. Andrew frequently gives talks to local groups about the station and its work. He is due to address a group of volunteer co-ordinators at Derriford Hospital at the end of April and members of Moors Edge U3A in July. New career as pastry chef for mum-of-three Nicola For 37-year-old Nicola Wood, studying just one day a week at City College Plymouth has led to her dream career as a Pastry Chef at one of Plymouth’s most popular venues - less than 12 months after enrolling on the course.
Mum-of-three Nicola, from Plymstock, had spent 14 years raising her three children as a stay at home mum, when she decided the time was right to follow in her father’s footsteps to become a chef. She explained: “At school I told my teacher I wanted to be a chef, and she told me that I couldn’t, because ‘men are chefs and women are cooks.’ “I had my first child at the age of 18 and focused on raising my children, who are now aged ten, 15 and 18. I’ve never really had a career but once the children were a bit older, I decided this was the right time. “I have always really enjoyed baking at home. I started looking at courses and found the patisserie and confectionary course at City College Plymouth. It’s a level 3 course which is equivalent to A Levels, but studied for one full day every week - which worked well with my family commitments.” Nicola also found that she was eligible for an advanced learner loan, which meant that
she didn’t have to find the money to pay for the course up front, instead receiving a loan which paid her tuition fees. These loans are not means tested and only need to be paid back once someone is earning £25,000 per year or more - with repayments usually less than £15 per month for those earning just over the earnings threshold. Talking about her time on the course, Nicola said: “My lecturer, Emmalene, has been absolutely amazing and so supportive. She knows exactly what employers require of chefs, and was always available whenever I needed support.” Within a month of completing her course last summer, Nicola was offered a job as a full-time pastry chef at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal. She said: “I now work 40 hours a week in a really busy role creating all kinds of pastries, breads, afternoon teas, cakes and desserts for theatre guests as well as catering for functions. It’s full on but I absolutely love it. I’m really happy I went for it and enrolled on the course. “My daughter is also at City College Plymouth learning to be a chef. She’s 15 and in the Junior Chef Academy - she will

Lucy King, 19, from Plymstock, has joined Plymouth-based marketing agency, Fuel Communications as a digital marketing apprentice.
Lucy was studying A Levels in history, psychology and sociology at Notre Dame School but didn’t want to continue her studies at university, so recalling a positive work placement at Fuel, she spoke with her dad, Martyn, who co-owns the agency. Martyn said: “Making career and education decisions is really tough which is why we encourage work experience here at Fuel. Of course, that works both ways, sometimes you need to experience things to find out that it isn’t for you. "For Lucy, she found out that the A level and university route wasn’t for her and, because she enjoyed her work experience with us, decided to look at a different route in order to gain a great career in marketing. Naturally, myself and my business partner Steve Gyseman, were keen to help.” Lucy’s time at Fuel made her rethink her education choices and she developed a real passion for digital marketing. Lucy said: “I figured out that I wanted to work in digital marketing and found out that I didn’t need to go to university to reach my goal. Dad took me to an Open Day at City College and I heard all about apprenticeships - the idea of earning money whilst learning - rather than having to work at the weekends - really appealed to me! Fuel values developing young talent and was keen to take Lucy on as a new member of the team. Martyn said: “Apprenticeships offer a fantastic way to recruit young talent and invite them to understand the culture of your business and contribute towards its development. For us, this is really important. Six months into her apprenticeship and Lucy is enjoying working at Fuel. “I really enjoy coming to work. There are lots of different jobs within the team and my role requires me to do a bit of everything. “The college has been really supportive. Once a month my assessor, Jon, comes in to the office to see me and to run through where I am with my coursework and talk about what projects I’m working on. These meetings leave me motivated to do more and I like that my coursework relates to the work I’m doing on a daily basis. “I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone looking to earn money, gain experience in the workplace and not burn the candle at both ends in the process!”

Plympton students learn lifesaving procedure A Plympton school has launched a programme of CPR training for its students – based on the fact that fewer than one in ten people who have a cardiac arrest out of hospital currently survive.
Over 200 Year 7 students from Hele’s School are learning how to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), a lifesaving medical procedure given to someone who is in cardiac arrest. The CPR training for the students is being given in science time, delivered by Mrs Stone and science teachers. Mrs Stone will be leaving the school soon to undergo training to become an emergency care assistant with the South Western Ambulance Service. Every Year 7 child will have the opportunity to be trained in CPR. Sharing this important life skill is held in such high regard that Hele’s has committed to deliver the training on a rolling programme each year for each incoming Year 7 cohort. Justin Sharples, (pictured) assistant community responder officer with the South Western Ambulance Service, visited a Year 7 assembly. He explained to the students just how important their training was and answered questions from the group.

Unfortunately, this assumption is not correct. Probate fees
have been in the news again recently as the Government is proposing to significantly change the fee structure on a date which is yet to be confirmed; but is likely to be imminent.
The need to apply for Probate is not determined by whether you leave a Will, or not, on your death. A Will appoints your chosen executors, names your beneficiaries and provides instructions as to how your estate will be distributed. Despite leaving a Will a Grant of Probate may still be

The ship is from Norfolk, Virginia and left the USA in December as part of a NATO deployment. The USS Gravely is named in honour of Samuel Lee Gravely who was the first African American in the US Navy to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer, the first to command a Naval ship, the first fleet commander and the first to become a Vice Admiral. Lieutenant Taulbee said: “We really appreciate Plympton Academy having us today – everyone really enjoyed getting off the ship and working with the students. 400 Women - inspiring future generations The Mayflower 400 celebrations will feature a vast range of events and celebrations - including one which will highlight the role of women in Plymouth who work in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries.
Volunteers at ‘Women in STEM Plymouth’ have launched their own campaign to 400 WOMEN as part of the Mayflower celebrations. The campaign has been created to inspire women, no matter what age, to consider a career in STEM subjects and will feature the profiles of four hundred local women who work in these industries. With over 100 of the 400 women already uploaded, the individuals range across everything from professors of haematology to offshore wind specialists and apprentice naval architects. One of the women, Emily Rose Churchill, is an animal behaviour scientist. She spends time monitoring flies in the lab, other days teaching, some days writing to a deadline or analysing data and others focusing on fieldwork or travelling the country sharing her exciting research. The beauty of such a varied role means she is ‘constantly amazed by new discoveries
GOOD FORTUNE BLOOMS ON PLYMPTON GARDENERS
After having to cancel the event last year due to snow, Harewood House was full of exhibits for the Plympton Gardeners’ Association Annual Spring Show. Show secretary, Paul Hutchings, reported a slow initial start to entry forms arriving through his letterbox in the weeks leading up to the event, but he was able to breathe a sigh of relief with many entries arriving over the few days prior to the show. The daffodil displays were described as ‘tremendous’ with keen rivalry between PGA members and the gardeners at Saltram House who came up with a wonderful display on show day. New, modern and heritage varieties of high quality daffodil blooms together with many spectacular general flower exhibits meant that the judges and later the general public were offered sights and smells far beyond expectations. There was also a good spring entry in the domestic science, floral art and photography sections again challenging the judges to pick best in show. Paul Hutchings commented: “There was increased interest in entering this spring show and also future shows. People recognised that the show is more an exhibition than a competition with support and guidance being offered to first time exhibitors by the PGA Show Team and other exhibitors”. This year the Spring Show trophies were spread among the various exhibitors with Dr Clapton and John Gilding winning in Best Exhibit in Daffodils and General Flowers respectively, Mr Frost clinched the cup for Best in Domestic Science, Mr Burch took Best in Photography and Mrs Witts picked up Best in Floral Art. Youngsters Erin Burch and Imogen Bishop-Hawes led the field in their age groups with wins in the Junior Sections while the PGA Novice Trophies went to Martin Stott and Nick Allison as first time exhibitors after they won many individual classes in Daffodils and General Flowers. The show was officially opened by Councillor Terri Beer and a great deal of support was given by the general public. Plympton Gardeners are now planning and organising their 70th Annual Summer Show which will be held on Saturday August 17. Schedules for that will be available in May. Another of the women is Hayley Evers-King. She works as a marine earth observation scientist who was inspired to pursue a STEM career by her grandfather’s passion for the natural world. Her profile explains: “A career in STEM can be inspiring and diverse, so don’t think there isn’t somewhere you can fit or that this isn’t a career for people like you. “Follow your passions and stick to your principles - build a supportive network of people who inspire you and you can trust. It’s
what will make you successful, and it’s what will help your career grow.” By encouraging local women to be involved, Women in STEM Plymouth are able to highlight the importance of having good role models who women in the community can feel personally connected to. The idea of such people-powered projects, which are made by people, about people, and for people, are most effective when more people get involved, therefore any women working in these industries in the Plymouth area are encouraged to get involved and take their place as one of these 400

To mark its 50th anniversary, Elburton Primary School has officially opened its Jubilee Playground with special guests and supporters invited to celebrate the occasion.
partake in during their lunch and break times. "The playground areas and outside space are used to host fairs and events that are open to the wider community. The school’s PTA organises a circus every two years, as well as Christmas and Summer Fairs, which are open to all. The playgrounds are also used by after school clubs and other organisations." Special thanks goes to Plymouth City Council for their contribution towards the playground and also to Councillor Vivien Pengelly who has provided funds which has been spent on new benches for the area. Persimmon Homes Community Champions fund also contributed £1000 towards the playground costs. Maria Anderson, Headteacher at Elburton Primary said: "It is fantastic to see the children taking advantage of this new facility. It provides the perfect space for children to sit and play quieter games with their friends and I would like to extend my thanks to the PTA, parents and the wider community that made this possible. "This Jubilee Playground will not only be incredibly valuable for the children and staff alike, it will also potentially be used by the local community groups. Laura Wills, chair of the Elburton Primary PTA said: "When we were presented with this project by the school to celebrate its 50th anniversary, it was clear that the target was ambitious. However with a hard working PTA team we are delighted that the Jubilee Playground has become a reality. "We wanted to give our children more space, and a safer, more enjoyable area to relax, socialise and play in. We believe that this is important for our children's mental and physical health. Our sincere thanks to all those that supported our campaign and continue to donate to the school, at our PTA events.
To celebrate the school’s golden anniversary, The school’s PTA had decided to mark the school's golden anniversary by raising £32,000 to build the new playground. In 1968 when the school first opened there were 240 pupils, now, 50 years later the new playground provides much needed space for the school’s 425 pupils aged from four to 11. The school and PTA launched a Crowdfunder campaign to raise a target of £15,000 as part of wider fund-raising to secure a total of £32,000. In five weeks the supporters donated a staggering £17,375 to the appeal meaning that along with money raised from PTA activities throughout the year, the playground could be built and additional equipment purchased for the children to use during their lunch and break times. Staff and the PTA welcomed back former headteacher of 22 years David Bradford to officially open the playground. They were joined by supporters from local businesses, the local community and parents. These key supporters now feature on a new plaque, which was unveiled at the opening, as Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors. Pupils past and present donated to the campaign including a child that donated his pocket money of 55p! David Bradford left the role as headteacher in December 2018 and is now chief executive of the Horizon Multi Academy Trust which includes Elburton Primary School. It was David’s vision to improve the learning and outdoor facilities for the David Bradford cuts the cake children that inspired this project. On opening the playground and unveiling the supporters plaque, David said: "Over the many years as headteacher at Elburton Primary School, the PTA have organised numerous fundraising campaigns which have contributed significantly to the enjoyment of school life for the children. "This latest appeal, I feel, was the biggest test yet for our parent volunteers and I am thrilled that they were able to raise the money for this much needed playground. I have witnessed some minor changes to the outdoor space for our pupils, but we have never gained any more physical space for the variety of activities that the children would like to

Tribute to society’s unseen heroes THE
By Dave Simpson, station manager of Cross Rhythms Plymouth
Experience Sat at home one recent Monday evening I received a message saying that a close family member had injured themselves and was at A&E. Needless to say plans changed and I made contact to check they were ok.
Thankfully the injury was not a major one and the grateful patient was able to leave Derriford hours later after being checked over and treated. Myself and my wife went up to the hospital in the early hours of the morning to offer a lift and be there to support if we could. In my only previous experiences with the emergency department I have been the patient and so it was a strange experience going in to wait with someone. I have to say it was an assault on the senses as I could see and hear people of all ages with varying degrees of physical ailments. It was pretty overwhelming. Standing there feeling quite uncomfortable I couldn’t help but feel an almighty sense of admiration for all the staff who were there to care for the patients. There were all kinds of different needs to be met and new people

Cornerstone Vision has a superb reputation for leaflet distribution throughout Plymouth and the surrounding areas. We are seeking people who can commit to delivering excellent service as part of our high quality team.
If you own a business, think of the employees and customers whose lives would be affected if you stopped. If you work as a waitress in a restaurant, think of the number of people who you have served as they celebrate a special occasion or enjoy a well earned meal out. Not only that but God sees you. That may sound like a strange thing to say but the truth is God sees what you do and loves you and your life more than you could know. God knows what you contribute and how much it costs you to do what you do. He knows the ups and the downs and the struggles you face to keep going and He is your biggest cheerleader. As I write this Easter is fast approaching, a time when many millions of people across the globe will remember the fact that God showed up to mankind in the person of Jesus and demonstrated powerful love for people, often taking time out to be with those who felt like they were unseen. Far beyond my ability to describe in a short article, there are many people to this day who know Jesus is with them in their day-to-day life and draw great comfort, peace and resolve from that. The best news is that this can be true for you too.
Commemoration to mark 25th anniversary of Rwanda genocide A special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the genocide against members of the Tutsi community in Rwanda will be held in Plymouth in May.
Kwibuka - which means 'Let Us Remember' - will take place on May 18. It is being organised by Plymouth-based All Nations Ministries, whose leader Revd Osee Ntavuka, survived the genocide but lost many members of his family. It was during a 100 day period in April 1994 that an estimated 800,000 men, women and children - all from the minority Tutsi community - were systematically murdered by the rival Hutu tribe. The Kwibuka event will be attended by the Rwanda High Commissioner, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, the Mayor of Rwandas's Nyarugenge District and the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Revd Nick McKinnel. The afternoon's programme will include the laying of flowers on the Memorial Stone at the Peace Garden on Plymouth Hoe, which will also include speeches, prayers and songs from a children's choir. This will then be followed by a Commemoration Service at Catherine Street Baptist Church led by Revd Osee Ntavuka. The sermon will be given by the Bishop of Plymouth followed by two genocide survivors who will share the horror of their experiences. Revd Osee Ntavuka will express his views on the benefits of forgiveness, followed by speeches from the Rwanda High Commissioner and the Mayor of Nyarugenge District. A candle will then be lit in remembrance of all those who died and suffered during the genocide.

Tea dances return to The Hoe as part of Lady Astor Statue campaign The iconic Plymouth tea dances of the Second World War are to be held again on Plymouth Hoe as part of the Lady Astor Statue Campaign celebrating 100 years of women in Parliament.
For one day only there will be dancing again with a band, professional dancers on hand and sailors in uniform on May 26 this year between 1pm and 4pm. The original tea dances were organised by Nancy and Waldorf Astor during the Second World War to boost morale after the city was bombed almost beyond recognition during the Blitz in 1941. In the wake of this devastation the tea dances were held on The Hoe and Lady Astor famously joined those dancing. At the time Waldorf Astor said: “The people of Plymouth have danced on the Hoe during the darkest days of war. They will dance here again in peace on a Hoe which overlooks a city which has been planned for them, for a wider, freer, healthier, and more prosperous life.” As part of the Lady Astor Statue Appeal many pensioners who remembered Nancy Astor contacted the project. Among them was Alice Jones, 92, who said: “I danced on The Hoe promenade in front of Elliot Terrace, Lady Astor on the microphone urging us girls to dance with the many servicemen from all nations. A statue in her memory is long overdue. Her good works will live on forever. God bless her. We will ever be grateful to her.” Project leader Alexis Bowater said: “We had so many people contacting us with memories and in particular recalling these tea dances that we thought it would be fun, fitting and poignant tribute to them to fulfil the promise Waldorf Astor made all those years ago. “The people of Plymouth will dance again on The Hoe, in peacetime, on May 26th this year, with representatives of Her Majesty’s Armed

Police appeal after conmen trick elderly women
Police have appealed for information over two incidents of fraud in Plymouth in which bogus workmen targeted elderly women in their own homes.
Award winners (from left) Tom Briggs, Joshua Ford, Hannah Tustain, Charlie Peck, Caroline Mayne, Vanessa Hawken, Callum Hardy, Chloe Roberts, Ismail Mustafa, Penny Wycherley, College Principal, Jake Wadlan, Kerys Voden, Taylor Evans, Saffron Foy, Hannah Roberts-Cossey
Fundraising projects, an outstanding commitment to learning and overcoming adversity were just some of the achievements celebrated at City College’s Spring Student of the Term awards.
The event recognises students who have gone above and beyond - making a positive contribution to the College or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve in their studies. The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating teachers. They enjoyed a delicious celebration meal prepared by the college’s catering and hospitality students before receiving their awards. Penny Wycherley, Principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Term awards are an important event for the College and a great way to celebrate the success of our students. Events like these are a celebration of some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, are each progressing incredibly well and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the College are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the City. It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and teaching staff.” Award Winners Vanessa Hawken, 43, Devonport and Caroline Mayne, 51, Mutley Vanessa and Caroline were both appointed as assistant managers at kitchen and homeware chain Lawsons and knew the value an apprenticeship would bring to making them a success in their new roles, but they didn’t anticipate winning Student of the Term awards for their work ethic and teamwork. Caroline said: “I’ve worked in retail for 35 years, six of which have been at Lawsons as a parttime sales assistant. The support I’ve received

from my family and assessor at the college have made returning to education possible. They have motivated me and reassured me that the hard work is all worthwhile which has clearly paid off.” Vanessa has worked at Lawsons for 14 years and her hard work was rewarded with a promotion to assistant manager. She said:”I was keen to improve my knowledge and the management apprenticeship has taught me everything I need to know to become an efficient manager. Caroline and I have really supported each other through the qualification and to be recognised for that has been lovely.” Ismail Mustafa, 33, Saltash English Student of the Term When Ismail’s lecturer first met him in 2013, he could not write, or read any more than his own name. Over the past few years he has worked hard to develop his literacy skills, whilst raising a young family and working. “I really enjoy the college environment and am really proud of what I have achieved over the past few months. Coming to college has helped me to develop my literacy skills. “I am now able to complete forms and deal with correspondence with confidence. I am looking forward to completing my Level 1 Functional Skills in English and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my lecturers.” Tom Briggs, 18, Torpoint Science Student of the Term When Tom’s step-dad sadly passed away, the biomedical science student demonstrated incredible grit, determination and resilience, focusing on his goal of going to university and maintained a focus on revising for and sitting his science exams despite the sad events. “When I came to the College, I had no formal qualifications. I was really pleased to gain my Level 2 in Applied Science and now I’m nearing the end of my level 3, am really proud to have received an offer to study biomedical science at the University of Plymouth. “It’s been challenging for so many reasons, but the college has been really supportive and it’s
great to be recognised for my hard work.” Hannah Tustain, 17, Millbrook Music Performing & Production Arts Student of the Term Hannah has a hearing impairment, but has developed excellent personal strategies for ensuring there is no barrier to her learning. As a compassionate and caring member of her group, Hannah always looks to support other students and has already made a significant contribution to college life through a number of performance projects, including playing a number of roles in a recent performance of ‘One Million Tiny Plays About Britain’ by Craig Taylor. She is currently working with her group on a new piece of original theatre which explores modes of communication, highlighting the perils of not understanding a given situation, particularly for the hearing impaired. “I love my course at College. My confidence in acting is really developing and it’s been great to play a part in developing the signing skills of staff within the department in order to better support other students like myself. Hopefully, this will help me to further develop my skills and scope as a theatre maker.” Hannah Roberts - Cossey, 21, Ivybridge Access to Higher Education Student of the Term Access student, Hannah, was celebrated for her sunny outlook and deep compassion for others - which stands her in good stead for a career as a midwife. As a real team player, Hannah was nominated for an award not only for her exemplary approach to learning, but also for her heavy involvement in her group’s fundraising project. “I love being part of the Access community at the College. The staff and students I work with are great to be around and there are so many opportunities for students to get involved with. “The fundraising project has been so much fun. I’ve loved being involved in bake sales, arts and crafts, designing, and organising raffles for charity and it’s lovely to have received a Student of the Term award.”

Detectives are seeking information after residents in the Keyham and Crownhill areas of the city were visited on Tuesday April 2 and pressured to hand over money. Both victims were told work costing £900 needed to be done to their water supply or drains – or they faced having to leave their properties. An elderly woman was approached in the Keyham area at around 11am by a suspect who claimed to be carrying out drainage work in the area. She was later visited at home and paid a deposit of £600, only to be told the problem was larger than anticipated and would cost £1,800. The victim went to the bank to withdraw the remaining funds, but decided to contact police after a taxi driver advised her not to hand over the cash. The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, of medium build, about 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in in height, and clean shaven. He spoke in a local accent and was wearing a hard hat. At around 1pm on the same day, an elderly female in the Crownhill area was visited by a man who stated there was an issue with her water supply. She was later contacted by an older, unknown male who again asked her for money, but the woman became suspicious and refused to pay. The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his early 20s, of average build and height, with no facial hair. He was wearing a high-visibility jacket and hard hat. Detective Constable Sam Smith, of Crownhill CID, said: “Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant against this type of crime, look out for vulnerable family members and neighbours and be reminded that caution should be used against traders who attend at your door pressuring you for money. “The public should not feel threatened or intimidated by traders or commit to any unnecessary work. If you feel vulnerable to this or feel threatened then call 999.” Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity, or who has further information, is urged to contact DC 7419 Sam Smith on 101 and quote crime number CR/029124/19.
