Sherford Life What if the hype is all true? We live in a culture where advertisers constantly bombard us with messages about how good their product will be, and often we end up being disappointed. But just sometimes the end product lives up to the hype.
Take, for example, the recent football World Cup. I was glued to the screen each day on the website of a certain national news outlet, as they released one classic World Cup video clip for each of the 50 days in the run-up to the event starting. And in my By Revd Tom Brassil humble opinion the 2018 tournament did not disappoint! On the other hand, sometimes the product simply cannot compete with our expectations. I discovered recently that singer Ariana Grande began hinting about her recently-released album two years ago, and the media hype has been building steadily over the past few months. Nevertheless I was reliably informed by a young teenager recently that she was already sick of hearing the album less than a month after its release! What about things in our locality? I personally think that Plymouth is often underrated as a place to live, with the abundance of beautiful scenery all around us and a vibrant city life. The recent National Fireworks Championships were at their gloriously ‘explosive’ best. And on our side of the city we have all sorts to look forward to. You may or may not agree with the hype surrounding the new Sherford development, but I for one am excited by seeing the building site slowly turn into a lived-in community full of hope and enthusiasm for the future. In this next month we will start to see the excitement surrounding the new Sherford Vale School turning into concrete reality as it opens its doors to the first students. One other thing I am looking forward to is Sherford Community Church ‘going live’ on Sundays from September 16. We will be meeting at 10am each Sunday in Sherford Vale School’s hall, and we will be considering some ancient hype. Mark tells us in his opening chapter in the Bible that there was centuries of hype surrounding the arrival of a person called Jesus: it had been predicted that he would be nothing less than God himself coming to earth. We’ll be looking at the pages of Mark’s book and deciding for ourselves whether Jesus lived up to that expectation. I won’t try and hype up the church too much, but I can promise that we won’t be spending hours each week singing dreary hymns or reciting archaic and confusing words. And we certainly won’t be wearing strange old-fashioned outfits! We will simply look into the Bible together, say a few prayers and sing a couple of up-beat songs. If you’re in the area on a Sunday morning, why not come along and see for yourself? If you have any questions about Sherford life, or if you would like to know more about Sherford Community Church, please contact me at tom@sherfordchurch.net
500-acre country park is open to the public
@PlymChronicle
Marking a major milestone in the development of Sherford, the first part of the town’s Country Park has now officially opened to the public. Free to use, explore and enjoy for everyone, from Sherford families and local neighbours, to the wider community and visitors to the area, the park is the new town’s first community space.
On completion the entire Country Park will cover 500-acres and include abundant open green space, parks, play areas, woodland, allotments and wildlife habitats. To celebrate the opening of the Country Park, residents, Sherford Vale School pupils and members of the local community were invited to take part in a family-friendly ‘Nature Day’ event. Children attending cut a ceremonial green ribbon to mark the park’s official opening. Hosted by the Sherford Consortium, members of the public had the opportunity to explore the parkland and wildflower meadows that form the beginning of the Country Park, as well as learning more about the town’s varied nature and wildlife. Plymouth-based forest school, WildAboutWoods, ran games and activities, which involved using Sherford’s natural resources and included identifying some of the park’s plants and trees.
Sustainability is at the heart of Sherford, with the Consortium having already invested over £1.6m into creating an eco-friendly community. The commitment to sustainability extends to Sherford’s varied plant life, with over 62,000 trees and 200,000 plants and shrubs planted. A further 2.3km of existing hedgerows have been carefully moved to save important seed banks and support biodiversity. The impressive town entrance also features over 30,000 plants, including daisies, ivies, gorse and ferns that have been transplanted from across the site. Emma Smith from the Sherford Consortium said: “It is fantastic that the first part of the Country Park is now open, where the local community can enjoy scenic walks and outdoor activities – it is the perfect spot for a summer picnic, dog walk or family day out. The opening marks a significant milestone in the development’s history and is set to be the first of many community spaces to open in the coming years.” Sue Dann, cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene Councillor, said: “Plymouth has masses of parks and
meadows – these are incredibly important as they give us space to walk, play, explore and breathe. We want every family to have somewhere within walking distance that they can go to unwind and recharge. It’s just as important for people moving into new homes to have the same opportunities. “We are growing as a city, but it needs to be sustainable which is why providing plenty of green space is so important for future generations.” To visit the Country Park, drive along Sherford Road until you reach the car park at the southern edge of the first phase of Sherford. While construction of the new town is still ongoing, visitors are advised to travel by car, but in time the park will be walkable from Sherford and the surrounding area. As this is only the first section of parkland to open, be please be aware that this typical Devon countryside terrain is uneven underfoot, and access involves crossing a wooden stile. As more of the extensive Country Park is completed, more accessible routes will follow. For more information about Sherford, visit www.sherford.org

College to raise funds for St Luke’s Hospice St Luke’s Hospice has been announced as City College Plymouth’s chosen charity for the forthcoming academic year. Every year, students and staff at the college raise thousands of pounds for good causes, including a nominated charity which is the focus for their fundraising efforts. This year, the college has chosen to work with St Luke’s - a charity committed to caring for those with serious illnesses and helping them to maintain privacy and dignity at the end of their life. “We want to say thank you to everyone at City College Plymouth for choosing us as their charity sponsor this year,” said St Luke’s Hospice business fundraising manager, Nicola Keen. “The generosity and hard work of students and staff will help us to keep providing the best possible care, advice and support for our

patients and their families.” Pauline Hands, director of marketing and business engagement at City College, said: “Over the years our students have raised funds for St Luke’s as part of their own enterprises - it is a cause close to their hearts and why we will be dedicating our fundraising efforts to the charity this year. We are excited to be working with St Luke’s and hope to raise as much money as we can for this amazing, local not-for-profit organisation.” Last year the college raised nearly £3,700 for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity committed to providing support, information
and guidance to everyone dealing with cancer. Students and staff volunteered countless hours and will be hoping to have similar success this year with St Luke’s. More information on the college’s chosen charity can be found at www.stlukes-hospice. org.uk. Those interested in joining the vibrant student community at City College can find out more by attending one of the College’s summer events. sent out information packs to 3,000 local residents and businesses seeking comments and received over 800 responses. The proposal has had a mixed reception so far from locals. Julia Heckford is among those who objected to the new supermarket. She has already written to city planners. In her letter she said: “I strongly object to Aldi being built here. The increasing traffic in Plympton is frustrating, bad for the local environment and I’ve witnessed more and more accidents and near misses over the years on the roads. I worry for job security of all the other nearby supermarkets and we just don’t need another supermarket, there really is little to gain from this for us locals.” By contrast Andy Murfet supports the idea. In his submission to Plymouth City Council he said: “I support this application as I think it will be good for businesses and the community alike. The road infrastructure
is already in place and the roundabout depicted in the plans would increase the flow of traffic to and from the site, easing congestion. Another superstore in this area of Plympton will provide healthy competition and provide choice to the general public. “This new store would also bring much needed employment to this area of Plymouth. The concerns about flooding and the nearby railway line have been addressed in the professional comments and they have shown no objection to this application. The location for this new superstore and the recent Marsh Mills development will prove that retail outlets can be a benefit to all outside of the city centre.” Aldi predict that a quarter of its customer base will be drawn from those currently using the Plympton Lidl store and that 2% will come from those currently using the Co-op in Ridgeway with a 6.12% overall reduction in business collectively among Ridgeway traders. Proposed road improvements to facilitate the new ALDI would include a roundabout at the junction of Strode Road and Galileo Close. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)
ALDI PLANS NEW STORE IN PLYMPTON Supermarket retailer Aldi has lodged a planning application for a new supermarket on part of the existing Chaplin’s car park in Strode Road, Plympton.
The planning application number is 18/01234/FUL and the deadline for public responses is August 21. Under the proposal the current Chaplin’s car park would be reduced in size and shared by both stores. A total of 53 parking places would be lost but there would be new provision for sixteen cycle parking points and four designated disabled parking places. The new store would have a floor space of 1,892 square metres and around 40 new jobs would be created at the store which would open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays. Prior to submitting its application, Aldi
Broadway tunes into Radio Plymouth Radio Plymouth has been appointed to provide marketing and promotional support for The Broadway shopping centre in Plymstock. Richard Allen, senior asset manager for Praxis Retails Estate Management, which manages The Broadway said: “We are delighted to be working with the Radio Plymouth team who will deliver the marketing, events and promotion for The Broadway over the next twelve months. “We firmly believe that by working with a locally based business to promote The Broadway it will support our own messages of encouraging customers to continue to shop local, to entice new businesses including pop-ups and start-ups to find out more about the flexible terms and lease arrangements available, and that over the coming months and years, The Broadway will stabilise and even reverse the national trend which has seen many current high street and retail shop closures across the country.” The new working partnership between Radio
Plymouth and The Broadway began at the beginning of July, which was also Independent Retailer Month – a campaign that runs annually throughout July to highlight the important role smaller, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve, the local economy they contribute to, and in the retail sector as a whole. Tricia Duff, managing director for Radio Plymouth said: “It is a privilege to be working with The Broadway team to manage their marketing, promotion and events. This is a new area of the business for Radio Plymouth and we are proud to be able to deliver social media support, website management and PR in addition to our existing multi-media marketing on-air, digital and inperson events attendance.” The Broadway centre manager, Mark Berry added: “We acknowledge that The Broadway has sadly seen a number of local and high street retailer and bank closures over the last couple of years, reflecting the changing retail market
nationally, however we are keen to reassure both customers and business owners that we will continue to invest in this Centre, and our team are very keen to work with existing retailers and encourage new shops and businesses to open up in The Broadway. We consider The Broadway a key local community asset and remain committed to turning round the fortunes of this neighbourhood shopping centre. “Our weekly market on a Wednesday is continuing to gain momentum with a wide range of local traders, new shop enquiries are steady and the Centre seems to be re-establishing some of the vibrancy that we know many customers and retailers fondly remember.” To enquire about The Broadway’s flexible business lease terms and arrangements or to find out more about trading at the weekly market (pitch fees have been waived until the end of September) please email enquiries@ thebroadwayplymstock.com
A Plymstock GP practice is raising awareness of how patients can receive their medication more quickly and reduce pressure on their GP. Church View Surgery in Holland Road has 12,500 registered patients and generates an average of 1,500 prescriptions every week. A staggering 84% of these prescriptions are in the traditional paper format which means the patient has to collect them from the surgery and drop them off at the pharmacy to be turned into their medication. The practice is raising awareness of electronic prescribing which does away with paper prescriptions completely and instead, sends a version of it direct to a pharmacy of the patient’s choice so it’s waiting for them when they arrive. The benefits to the patient include; • No struggling to find a parking space at the practice • No queue at the practice reception • A choice of pharmacy to collect their medication • No more lost or mislaid prescriptions • Automatic repeat prescriptions There are also big benefits for Church View including: • Less pressure on their GP • Less pressure on the reception staff • A reduction in mislaid and delayed prescriptions Electronic prescriptions have been around in the NHS for a few years but have been slow to catch on in our area. Emma Rayment, Church View practice manager said; “Some of our patients already use electronic prescriptions and would never go back to the paper format. It makes life easier for the patient and reduces pressure on their GP at a time when the practice has never been busier. We know it won’t be every patient’s preference which is understandable although we do believe that there are large numbers of our patients who would find the electronic way to be much simpler, quicker and convenient”. Church View is raising awareness and communicating the benefits of electronic prescribing to its patients during August with in-practice displays, text messages and offering one to one practical help in setting up the system which takes just a few minutes. Any Church View patient who would like to find out more can call the dispensing team on 01752 403214.
Police appeal for witnesses after Plymstock assaults Police are appealing for the public’s help as they investigate reports of two similar incidents of assault which happened on Thursday August 9 in Plymstock. Sherford will soon be getting its first bus service following a review of the city’s subsidised network.
Launching in September, the 2A will be operated by Stagecoach South West and link the new community in the east with Saltash in the west, via Plymstock Broadway, Pomphlett Roundabout, the city centre, railway station and Milehouse. It will run every 20 minutes during the day from Monday to Saturday and hourly in the evenings, on Sundays and on Bank Holidays. Stagecoach South West will also take over nine of the council’s 11 financially supported services (7D, 13, 14, 18, 19, 31, 39, 52 and 223) from Monday October 29, with customers seeing a number of improvements. Service 14 will be extended to Derriford (restoring an hourly service to residents of
Powisland Drive, Dunraven Drive and Upland Drive from Monday to Saturday). Service 52 which links Plympton, Leigham and Asda in Estover to Derriford Hospital, will be extended to serve Crownhill, Hartley Vale, Compton, Mannamead and the city centre, replacing the current service 39 and providing new cross-city links as a result. Plymouth City Council is also stepping in to fund replacement services for Holly Park and Ringmore Way (where the commercially-run services 50A and 51A are being withdrawn) and Mainstone (currently served by the 28A). The replacement services will continue to be operated by Plymouth Citybus. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, said: “Most of the city’s bus services are run commercially but there are some that we
financially support to ensure residents can get from A to B and access the local services they need. “With ever-growing pressures on our budgets it’s really important to target this funding where it is most needed. Before tendering these contracts we carried out a full review of current demand and travel patterns to ensure our new network meets passengers’ needs while delivering value for money. “Where many councils across the country have been reducing or withdrawing their bus subsidies we are really pleased to have managed to retain our full network, with only minor changes, as well as replace services being withdrawn by commercial operators and introduce a new service into Sherford.”
Plympton Academy expansion plans Plympton Academy has unveiled plans for a new building to replace the current one on its Moorland Road site.
The plans were revealed in a public consultation display in the main hall at the Academy recently. Financing for the project has been secured from the Education and Skills Funding Agency and BAM will deliver the project subject to planning consent. The Academy hopes the new building will provide students with first class facilities that will inspire them to be first class citizens. The new building will offer a combination of bespoke classrooms along with art and design areas, food technology rooms, large hall and gym areas as well as an airy, bright learning resource centre that will be crammed with books and magazines that will encourage the Academy’s learners to read about different subjects. Subject to gaining planning consent, the Academy is aiming for work to start in January 2019 and to be completed by September 2020. Plympton Academy Principal Lisa Boorman said: “Throughout the build the priority will be to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the learning of our students and I am confident that, through a joined up approach with BAM, that this will be achieved.” A number of temporary classrooms will be brought onto the site during the rebuild.
Artist’s impression of the new building
The existing building adjacent to Moorland Road will be completely demolished and replaced with a more modern three-storey one set further back from the road. There will be provision for a student congregation area in front of the new building where students can muster as they arrive for
the start of the day. A formal planning application is expected to be submitted to Plymouth City Council before the end of August. Details about the proposed new building can also be seen at www.plympton.academy (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)
Council leader slams police merger plan Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans has attacked plans for the biggest ever shake-up of policing in the Westcountry.
Councillor Evans said a merger of Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police, to make it the biggest geographical force in England, is being decided behind closed doors without properly consulting residents or knowing what the implications might be for cities such as Plymouth. A report to be considered by the Council’s Cabinet says there are “significant concerns” about the police plans for only limited engagement with key stakeholders before making a decision. Councillor Evans said: “Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police are on the verge of forcing through the biggest shake up of policing in this region for more than 50 years. “Every fibre of my being believes that this merger is a bad thing for Plymouth in its current form and I refuse to stand by and let it happen. “Although we have had little information about the plans or what they will mean for Plymouth residents, the information we have got is at best vague. There is no business case available and there is no formal

consultation with local authorities that will be affected. “Plymouth is the biggest city in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall and as such has specific policing needs that we require assurances will be met. We need to know what the implications are for us before it goes ahead. “We have been told by the respective chief constables and police crime commissioners that further details of how the merger will work will be revealed once they have made a decision as to whether to go ahead with the merger or not. “To present it to us a fait accompli is
unacceptable. We must have answers for Plymouth now. We find it unfathomable that a merger of this magnitude can be agreed without detailed scrutiny from the major stakeholders. “We need to know how this merger will be funded and how it will affect our tax payers. Under the merger, Council Tax payers in Plymouth would see a substantial hike in their bill with no guarantee of additional police resources spent in their area. This could see the residents of St Budeaux facing a tax rise to pay for more police in affluent Sandbanks in Poole. This is not on. “We’ve already seen a reduction in neighbourhood policing, even though it has delivered good results in our city. We have to know what this means in terms of bobbies on the beat. “We want reassurances, scrutiny and answers before any decision on the merger is made. But most of all, we want to ensure whatever happens is best for Plymouth.” Members of the public can comment on the proposed merger by completing an online survey. Go to www.futurepolicing. co.uk for the survey, which is open until Monday August 27.

PSPO’s would enable unauthorised traveller encampments on land protected by the Orders to be moved on immediately and arrests made if necessary rather than the issue having to go through a civil court process which can often take weeks. Plans to put these Orders in place were announced last year but not a single one has yet been enacted it has now emerged. The issue came to light after travellers set up an unauthorised camp on the cricket field in Harewood Park on Sunday July 22. This is the second successive year the cricket pitch has suffered from an unauthorised traveller encampment. This year’s encampment however only lasted for one day after local councillors Andrea Loveridge and Patrick Nicholson visited the site and made a personal appeal to the travellers to move on - which they heeded. The community has, though, still been left concerned that this tactic may not necessarily work in future and that the absence of a PSPO on sites such as Harewood Park reduces the authorities’ ability to deal speedily with an unauthorised encampment when one is set up. Councillor Chris Penberthy, cabinet member for housing and cooperative development, conceded the Orders had not yet been enacted. He said: “This policy was approved by the Cabinet of the previous administration in November 2017 but was not implemented. I am in the process of reviewing it and will be making an announcement on our plans in due course.” Conservative group leader Ian Bowyer set out why the Orders were not enacted under the Conservative administration which was in office until the May 2018 local elections. He explained: “The PSPO’s being implemented were dependent on our having somewhere to send travellers (tolerated stopping zones). As the tolerated stopping zones had not been formally adopted, we couldn’t use PSPO. The two went hand in hand.” Cllr Bowyer added that he assumed the new administration would complete the work to identify these tolerated stopping zones and make a suitable announcement. Plympton Community Council vice chairman and former Stannator Andrew Hill said: “It is disappointing to learn that these Orders have not yet been put in place. Although the encampment on the cricket pitch this year was short-lived, I am nonetheless aware that at least one group took steps to relocate their match when the travellers arrived.” “It is not acceptable that local residents can so readily have their lawful use of these community amenities interrupted in this way. This vexed issue of where travellers can lawfully go, or set up in a tolerated area which does not impact significantly on the local community, has been ongoing for some years. “I sincerely hope that both Parties on Plymouth City Council can work together to finally achieve a resolution to this in time for next summer.”

Fantastic news for Fynn and family as NHS agree to fund vital surgery
The family of a four-year-old Plympton boy who suffers from spastic cerebral palsy have been told that the NHS will after all pay for his potentially life-changing surgery.
In May last year the family of Fynn Fleming met with consultants at Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital to see if he was a suitable candidate for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). SDR is the dividing and cutting of nerves in the spinal cord. They were told that they needed to continue with Fynn’s physiotherapy to strengthen his core, but that he was an excellent candidate. Cerebral palsy makes life extremely difficult for Fynn. The condition makes his muscles stiff and his
movements stiff and jerky. His increased muscle tone can make movements difficult and sometimes impossible. Fynn finds it hard to sleep at night due to painful muscle spasms which is only partially alleviated by medication. Despite this he still needs turning over because he is just too exhausted, as the day’s exertion make it just too much for him. This quite often leaves Fynn very tired and aching the next day, when the cycle begins again. Fynn is a twin and tries extremely hard to do the same things as his brother Leo. The operation would mean that most of his painful spasms would cease and that this would lead to him hopefully walking unaided. However,
they were told that the surgery was at that time not funded on the NHS and that they would have to pay for it themselves. His parents Ollie and Katie Fleming then launched an appeal to raise the £38,000 needed for the operation and received fantastic support from friends, family, businesses and other organisations. Among these was a recent donation of £500 which was made by the Lions Club of Plymouth. The appeal has raised over £16,000 in the last year. The family recently received the news that the critical nature of Fynn’s condition means that the operation will now be funded by the NHS. It is expected that the operation will take place in November.
event. Known as a ‘Triples Match’, which involves twelve teams of three. The winning team is the one which has amassed the most points at the end of the day. The winning team on this occasion, with a total of 34 points, consisted of Brian West, Irene Gilroy and Robert (Robbie) Williams. The team won the Plympton Bowling Club Triples Bowl and each team member took away an inscribed
trophy plaque. Big thanks to Derek Scantlebury, who is responsible for the organisation of all internal club competitions and also organised the day. Plympton Bowling Club is proud of its charity fund raising events and thanks are due to everyone who helped with generous donations, raffle prizes and other money raising ideas.
Plympton bowlers raise £800 for charity Each year, the Plympton Bowling Club select a charity to be awarded with money raised from a charity day event.
The charity selected this season was The Snowdrop Appeal at Derriford Hospital, and the club raised a total of £800 for this very worthy cause. The Jasmine and Central Delivery Suite Snowdrop Appeal is an appeal for a new specialist unit or area for bereaved parents of still birth, miscarriage and early baby loss at Derriford Hospital. This is ideally situated away from the busy maternity ward, hopefully easing the trauma and loss the parents will experience in such a tragic time. A cheque will be presented to the charity by the Plympton Bowling Club closely followed by a matched amount of £800, donated by the Santander Bank, bringing the sum total of £1,600 for the Snowdrop Appeal. The money was raised by the club members playing a triple charity

With help from sales executive Lauren, the Ferriday’s move to Sherford was a memorable experience that the couple were eager to share. Using the Part Exchange scheme, Marilyn and Michael were able to secure a brand new four bedroom home at Sherford, and haven’t looked back since. Michael said: “We lost our son two years ago, and had been living in our last home for a long time which just became too difficult. We needed to move away; we thought about either moving to the moors or by the sea, and then we stumbled across Sherford. “It hadn’t crossed our minds to buy a new build property, but when visiting Sherford, Lauren saw that my wife was upset, and asked if she could show us around the development, she was amazing from start to finish. Both myself and Marilyn fell in love with the house straight away. Marilyn walked in and that was it - we knew we’d found our dream home. It was cheaper than what we’d been looking at, yet the quality and size of the house was second to none. Michael and Marilyn’s move was also made possible through Taylor Wimpey’s Part Exchange scheme. Customers using Part Exchange can avoid the stress of putting their existing home on the market as Taylor Wimpey will act as the buyer for their current property. Marilyn said: “Part Exchange was brilliant, it was incredibly helpful having Taylor Wimpey manage and oversee the process. The sales executives would ring us with updates to keep us in the loop, so we always knew what was going on without the stress of trying to sort it ourselves.” The pair moved into their new home two and a half months ago, and have been truly loving life. Marilyn said: “I genuinely adore everything about my home, from the look of the property to the lovely hallway - it’s just perfect. The location is ideal too, we’re only two minutes from all the shops and Michael actually has two different routes to get to work now so he can beat the morning rush. I honestly can’t thank Taylor Wimpey enough, I’m so happy. This is the best thing we’ve done. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in our dream move such as Lauren, Dev and Josh in the sales team, the builders Nuno and Mark, and Lydia from the aftercare team.” For more information about Taylor Wimpey’s properties on offer at Sherford call 01752 967828 or visit www.taylorwimpey.co.uk.

New crematorium to be built at Saltram A brand new crematorium costing almost £12m is to be built on land next to Stag Lodge on the fringe of Saltram Park.
Once the new facility is up and running the existing crematoria at Efford and Weston Mill will be decommissioned but the burial grounds at both those sites will be maintained .The new facility off Merafield Road will include two non-denomination ceremony spaces with flexible seating, waiting areas, offices, a new crematory and three new cremators with the latest environmental protection equipment. The scheme will be designed to meet 21st century expectations of the bereaved, provide green burials and reflective spaces for memorialisation and scatterings as well as reducing the service’s carbon footprint through new technology. There will also be appropriate car parking, landscaping to provide reflective spaces that embrace the local environment and ecology for memorialisation and scattering as well as the first green burial offer in the city. There has been cross-party support for the proposed new crematorium. Councillor Tudor Evans, leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “These impressive and ambitious plans will deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that meets the need of the 21st century and allows us to provide for an ever-growing city.“
Artist’s impressions of the new crematorium
“Not only will it eventually deliver one of the most impressive crematoriums in the country but during construction it will boost local jobs and provide work placements and apprenticeships. “I am delighted to be able to support the project in its infancy and look forward to seeing it develop in the coming months.” Councillor Ian Bowyer, leader of the Opposition, said: “This is an incredibly important project for the city as it will affect so many families during difficult moments
in their lives. We need to make sure that the new facilities being created meet modern standards and expectations and we will be working together to make sure this happens.” The council currently operates two crematoria at Efford and at Weston Mill. Both of these sites each house two cremators installed in the late 1990s that are nearing the end of their useful life. Replacement at the existing sites has been ruled out by an independent specialist because of a lack of physical space to
accommodate modern technology systems. Extensions to either side of the buildings also are restricted because of existing graves, paths and driveways with Victorian structures. Whilst all cremations will take place at the new site once it is up and running, both Efford and Weston Mill will continue to be active cemeteries and memorial gardens with the chapels available for bookings. The design of the new crematorium is being drawn up by Plymouth-based architects Stride Treglown, in partnership with AECOM. A spokesperson for Stride Treglown said: “This is an extremely important project for the city of Plymouth and its community and Stride Treglown are very honoured to be involved in designs which we hope will provide a sensitive and long lasting benefit to the city.“ The designs for the crematorium includes buildings for bereavement ceremonies but importantly they will also sit within a befitting landscape setting designed by our partners AECOM hopefully to create an appropriately sensitive and peaceful environment.” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)
Work of Reynolds and Kauffman on display at Saltram to mark 250th anniversary of Royal Academy of Arts Saltram has launched a new display to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The display, supported by the Art Fund, takes a closer look at the work of two Royal Academicians, Angelica Kauffman and Sir Joshua Reynolds, and their relationship with the Parker family who once owned Saltram. The paintings will be on display throughout Saltram House until the end of October. Angelica Kauffman was one of two founding female members of the Royal Academy of Arts. She exhibited a series of four history paintings at the first-ever Royal Academy exhibition in London which were promptly purchased by the Parkers for Saltram. They continued to be key patrons for Kauffman, buying more of her works including a self-portrait as well as her working library of prints and drawings. John Parker II first met Kauffman when she painted his portrait from her studio in Italy whilst he was on the Grand Tour. Joshua Reynolds, who was born
A portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds by Angelica Kauffman
in Plympton, was also a friend of the Parkers and the first President of the Royal Academy. Over the years he painted many portraits of the family which will be highlighted through this display, including the famous portrait of Theresa Parker commissioned to hang in the Robert Adam designed saloon. Reynolds and Kauffman themselves became friends and the
affectionate portrait of Reynolds by Kauffman, whom he called ‘Miss Angel’ hangs in Saltram’s staircase hall. Loans from Plymouth City Council (Museums, Galleries, Archives) complement the display and visitors can see a paint palette belonging to Reynolds as well as one of his pocket books - used to record the names of those who sat for him. Alison Cooper, National Trust curator for Saltram said: “The 250th Anniversary of the Royal Academy is a fantastic opportunity for us to focus on the work of Angelica Kauffman and Sir Joshua Reynolds at Saltram. “Not only were they both founding members of the Royal Academy but they had fascinating connections to the Parker family of Saltram. The display will highlight key paintings in the collection but also offers the chance to look at both Kauffman’s and Reynolds’ experience of the Royal Academy, how they gained ‘celebrity status’ and how, as a woman, Kauffman had to overcome many prejudices to succeed in a male dominated art world.”

Plymouth team lifts top title in Help for Heroes Games Four athletes from Help for Heroes’ Plymouth Recovery Centre have brought home the silverware in the 2018 Help for Heroes Summer Games. The Devon based team were the overall winners of the games and were presented with the coveted Phoenix Trophy.
A week of sporting challenges brought together wounded, injured and sick veterans and Service personnel from all around the country. It’s the fifth time that staff at Help for Heroes’ Phoenix House in Catterick, have organised the activities which sees teams from each of the Charity’s four Recovery Centres in Plymouth, Tedworth, Colchester and Catterick competing for the Summer Games Phoenix Trophy. The week kicked off with a tough gym challenge and ended with several of the team members getting a soaking during a raft-building exercise at Ellerton Lake. This year, events in-between included boccia, sitting volleyball, archery, wheelchair basketball, swimming and a quiz.
being part of a team with likeminded individuals. At the end of the week, they will all leave with a sense of achievement, be it through trying something new, returning to an activity that they used to do before injury or simply having plucked up the courage to walk through our doors and join in!” Plymouth’s leading seaman specialist Craig Taylor took part and says it was a great experience: “It’s a good atmosphere. The first day, everyone was a bit apprehensive but, by the evening, we all sat together and as the days have gone one, we have mixed really well. We can be ourselves, with others who understand. There’s always a bit of a competitive edge when you pitch Navy versus Army but I am really enjoying the camaraderie more than anything. Next up will be the Winter Games which will be held at Tedworth House. Help for Heroes offers support throughout the year from its Recovery Centre in Plymouth and community locations across the South West. Get support or give support visit www.helpforheroes.org.uk.

Each is designed so that everyone can participate on an even basis, regardless of injury or ability. Plymouth won the gym challenge, sitting volleyball and the Krypton Factor and came third on raft-building. “We look at what someone CAN do, not what they can’t and find ways to enable them to do it,” said Mark Airey, physical development coach – Strength
and Conditioning at Phoenix House. “Publicity around the Invictus and Warrior Games does a great job at demonstrating how sport helps in a person’s recovery but it doesn’t have to be at that high level. The Phoenix Summer Games provides an opportunity for the people we support to try out a wide variety of sports at grass roots level where the emphasis is on having fun and

Wounded Plymouth veteran helps make SUMMER history in first Para Highland Games
SALE
A wounded veteran, originally from Plympton, was among a team of wounded and injured veterans and serving personnel who created history at the weekend, when they took part in Scotland’s first ever Para Highland Games, in front of Prince Charles.
Steve Cokayne, who went to Ridgeway School and now lives in Hinckley, was a member of a Help for Heroes team that competed in the Mey Games at John o’ Groats in August. More than 2000 spectators watched the team compete against para athletes from America and Australia, and saw Steve become the current reigning world champion at ‘Sheaf Toss’. It’s the first time that the sport, which involves hurling a 26lb bag of rocks over a height using a pitchfork, has featured in a para games. The 50-year old came second in no less than four events, including shotput and throwing a 32lb weight over a high bar. Steve said they gave the competition something to think about: “I think I gave the Americans a good run for their money, I had never thrown anything as heavy as the 10kg shotput so to come second in that was great too. “The whole thing was absolutely incredible. So good that we are looking to start entering Highland Games on a regular basis and, if we can get the funding, even go over to the US and compete there where they can attract crowds of up to 32,000!” Steve served with 94 Locating Regiment Royal Artillery and was deployed all over the world, including on operations in Northern Ireland. A rock-climbing accident in 1988 led to him undergoing 30 operations on his right leg until, in 2009, the decision was taken to amputate it below the knee. He now works as a freight train driver, and is an experienced strongman, having competed in the 100m shotput, discus and powerlifting in the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. He saw the Highland Games as an ideal progression. His preparation for these Games comprised of lots of upper body work – and, of course, buying a kilt! He said taking part in sport has given

in sports which I’ve never done before.” The Mey Games is the smallest of Scotland’s Highland Games and is run by the local British Legion in aid of veterans. Prince Charles is Chieftain of the Games and, like his grandmother before him, is a regular attendee. Having enjoyed the success of the Invictus Games, created by his son Prince Harry, the Duke of Rothesay (as he is also known), invited Help for Heroes to enter a team into specially adapted classes of the traditional sports such as tossing the caber, hammer throwing and shotput. Mark Airey, physical development coach with Help for Heroes, said being asked to participate in the Mey Games, alongside teams from all over the world, had been a real honour. Mark said: “Help for Heroes is the leader in para sport for wounded veterans, so we were delighted to support Scotland’s first adaptive Highland Games. “We hope the success of this milestone event will encourage other Games organisers to follow suit in the future as we know how integral sport is to the recovery of so many of those we support. Not all are aspiring Paralympians but they just enjoy physical exercise and friendly competition and the Highland Games is perfect for them.” Help for Heroes offers support throughout the year from its Recovery Centre in Plymouth and community locations across the South West. Focus on value of apprenticeships What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are occupational standards focusing on skills, knowledge and behaviours with ‘On the job’ training available to those aged 16 and over.
Apprenticeships take a minimum of 12 months to complete, depending on the sector and level, however, some can last up to four years. Throughout the time of the apprenticeship, an apprentice is trained and guided towards a skilled role gaining industry knowledge and the skills required to do the job in the sector of their choice. An apprenticeship is the ideal way to earn whilst you learn, combining elements of education, training and employment simultaneously. Apprenticeships offer the same tasks and roles as regular employment, though there is a greater amount of support. The Focus Training Group are a local training provider founded in 1999. The business has successfully expanded and developed since this time, and now offers a wide, diverse range of business support with training and qualifications across the South West, specialising in apprenticeships for all ages. Focus Training caters for those just leaving school and getting on the first rung of the career ladder, people wanting to change career route or people wanting to upskill in their current career. Ofsted graded Good (reinspection June 2018), all trainers have worked in the industries they support, gaining valuable experience and understanding of the specialist skills needed within each business sector. Approximately 35 apprenticeship vacancies are currently available with more being added every day in all subject areas listed in the advertisement on this page. New September intake of Electrical, Arboriculture, Gas Engineers and Accountancy apprentices are being signed up now as well as our Business, Hospitality, Health & Social Care, Retail, Management, Team leading, Warehousing and Customer Service apprenticeships which are available all year round. So whether you are looking for yourself, a young person or to upskill your staff give them a call for more information.

Plymstock School - recognised as one Opening doors to learning... of the best secondaries in the country No two schools are ever the same, but we believe that Plymstock School is a truly unique and special place. Our objective is simple – we strive to be a world-class learning community that enables all young people to succeed.
We are very successful, with our performance being in the top 13% of schools nationally, and we are the highest performing non-selective school in the city. We are a very popular choice with parents and are significantly oversubscribed. Consequently, as of September 2018, we are expanding our Year 7 school intake from 260 to 300 students each year. Our expansion has brought substantial investment and in September 2018, we start the construction of our exciting 475-seater Arts Centre. Teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do at Plymstock. Our curriculum is broad, balanced and provides students with the opportunity to discover their hidden talents. Our standards of discipline are very high and consequently students are free to learn without
disruption. We are a school that still subscribes to traditional expectations for behaviour, and you will find many things that you won’t see elsewhere, such as all students standing when an adult enters a classroom. Relationships between staff and students are exceptionally strong and a real strength of our school. Our staff are happy, morale is good and staff turnover is low – staff really want to work here. Importantly, when students complete their education with us they go on to do great things. Recent leavers have included the Captain of the England Women’s Cricket team and the CEO of one of the world’s largest social media marketing companies, Social Chain. We have received much recognition for our work. We are the only school in Plymouth to be featured in the national Good Schools Guide, in addition to being identified as one of the ‘500 Best State Secondary Schools’ by the Sunday Times in 2017. We strongly encourage you to visit us, so you can see for yourself why Plymstock School is a special place to learn.
Open Doors International Language School is a charity whose main aim is to serve those in the community isolated by language and culture through a variety of English language classes. These range from General English to employability and exam preparation courses. However, our work doesn’t end there… We also offer Trinity accredited teacher training courses to help build up the number of English as a second language (ESOL) specialists, whether you’ve never taught before or you’re a seasoned teacher looking to take your next professional steps. As teaching for this happens on the same site as our general English classes we offer great opportunities for teaching practice, both on the courses and as a volunteer, so you can get a feel for what teaching ESOL is really like! We’ve had a wide range of students take up places on our level 5 Cert TESOL, from native English speakers
to students that have completed our general English classes themselves. Our diverse teaching staff is made up of many of our Cert TESOL graduates, with others travelling further afield to places like Vietnam. Some have even gone on to develop their own courses in subjects like Maritime and Business English, whilst others work as mentors to refugees. The possibilities on graduating are truly endless! If you’re already an ESOL teacher, with at least 960 hours of teaching under your belt, then our Dip TESOL could be the key to the next stage of your career. It’s a flexible level 7 course that builds on the knowledge from the Cert and opens doors for higher management roles, such as director of studies. It’s a huge challenge, but one you’ll be glad you took on! For more information pop over to our website: www.odils.com or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

Dance school presented with Stannator’s Award A dance school which has been running for the past 42 years has been presented with a prestigious community award.
The Susan Jane School of Dancing was formally presented with the Marjorie Lynden Award at Plympton St Maurice Church Hall during their last meeting before the school summer holidays. The award was established by Marjorie Lynden who was Stannator of Plympton in 1985/6. She awarded it that year collectively to the young people of Plympton. In the years since, successive Stannators have been able to award the trophy to an individual young person or group of young people who have done worthwhile things for others in the Plympton Community. Retiring Stannator Andrew Hill made a surprise announcement to the school shortly before they came into the arena to perform at this year’s Plympton’s Lamb Feast in June informing them that they would be this year’s recipients of the award. It was arranged that a formal presentation of the shield would be made at a later date and this took place at the school’s end of term dance night before the summer break to enable as many students and parents as possible to be present to receive it. Mr Hill told the students that he enjoyed their performances at the Lamb Feast and that they were getting the award for their numerous shows they had put on for charities over the years and for the joy they had brought to the people of Plympton in that time. As well as their performances at the Lamb Feast the dance school have performed at

They entered the store and taken a number of mobile phones from the cabinets before fleeing the scene. Police enquiries are ongoing into this incident. many nursing homes over the years and have put on shows for the elderly at Harewood House. During the past four decades the school has also raised thousands of pounds for charities such as CLIC Sargent, Cancer Research, St Luke’s Hospice and AGSD-UK. Accepting the award, the founder of the
Susan Jane School of Dancing, Sue Heesem, said that it was doubly meaningful to receive the Marjorie Lynden Shield as at the age of 18 Mrs Heesem’s first public performance with the school was in front of Marjorie Lynden at Harewood House and it was therefore extra special to receive an award which bore Mrs Lynden’s name.
Past recipients of the Marjorie Lynden Award have included Plympton Scouts, Woodford Guitar Group, Longcause School, Jon-Paul Oxley, Tom Boulden and Morgan Lewis. Onion run fails to keep rain away from Cornwood Show The end of the prolonged summer dry spell couldn’t have come at a worse time for organisers of the Cornwood Show which took place at Cadleigh Farm on Saturday August 11.
Every year, in an attempt to make sure the show has good weather, Year 6 pupils from Cornwood School perform the traditional ‘Onion Run’. It was extra special this year because the school children had all grown onions in buckets and the biggest onion was honoured by being impaled on the onion stick! The beribboned onion stick was then carried aloft around the show field as part of the school’s end-of-term activities and in a ritual which is supposed to keep rain away from the event. This year though their attempts to ensure good weather did not work. Continuous rain set in from around lunchtime onwards causing an early end to many of the scheduled events, particularly in the outdoor entertainment arena and as attendance dwindled throughout the afternoon even the indoor aspects of the show started to pack up early. Despite the poor weather the horticultural tents had an impressive array of exhibits with the usual friendly rivalry between exhibitors being much in evidence. Veteran exhibitor Janet Bates followed up her success in the domestic science section last year by once again clinching the Slade Perpetual Cup for this year’s entries in that section of the show. She also picked up the Green Glass Bowl for her Floral Art Exhibits. However in a re-run of 2017 she was pipped to the post for three other floral art trophies which were retained by another veteran exhibitor Patricia Hill whose silverware
Patricia Hill’s winning ‘The Beacon Run’ exhibit
included the E.C Hext Perpetual Cup, the Post Office Plate and the Silver Rose Bowl for floral art. She also won best in show for her floral interpretation of ‘The Beacon Run’. The Beacon Run is a multi-terrain running race which has been staged annually for many years and encompasses ‘the Spirit of the Moor.’ The judge for the floral art class remarked: “This exhibit really depicts the Beacon Run, well done. You have used all the right ‘ingredients’.” Jon Carlson impressed the judges in the vegetable classes gaining the Kingwell Perpetual Cup, the J Baugh Cut Glass Bowl and the Charlie Willcocks Memorial Cup for Best Vegetable exhibit. Justin Rees had a clean sweep in the art classes picking up three firsts and two cups. Kate Wootton also received a cup in the adult handicraft classes.
In the children’s section of the show the overall victor with the most points was Amy Stephens with Angus Wilson being the runner up. Plympton’s Savannah Vertessy achieved the Perpetual Cup for most points in children’s domestic science with Amy Stephens being the runner up in that section. Millie-Grace Chapman was awarded Best Exhibit in the cookery section and Amy Stephens received a prize for the best funnyfaced pizza. Savannah Vertessy and Isabella Prout achieved recognition for their children’s handicraft entries and Georgie Knott triumphed in the under 16 photography classes. Over in the pet tent Mr Grey - a light grey coloured guinea pig - picked up the Best in Show prize and there was an impressive array of birds in the poultry tent. While the rain hindered some of the outdoor entertainment, the Dartmoor Border Morris Men adjourned to the beer tent where they put on a display of dancing under cover. New Stannator becomes an honorary Rotarian Plympton’s new Stannator, Natalie Harrison, has followed in the steps of her immediate predecessors by taking up honorary membership of the Rotary Club of Plympton.
It has been the tradition of the club since the 2014/15 year to invite the Stannator to be an honorary Rotarian for their term of office. Stannator Harrison accepted the invitation and was inducted at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Plympton. Natalie already had some knowledge of the club having helped on their Christmas rounds in the past with a pre-school group she was associated with. Plympton Rotary President George
Benjafield also took the opportunity to award a second Honorary Membership, this one to Plymouth Albion Ladies’ Rachel Miller in recognition of her outstanding support for Plympton Rotary Club during the last year as part of the club’s sponsorship of her. With the club’s continuation of their sponsorship of Rachel for the coming rugby season, Plympton Youth Ambassador Molly Disney, who had come along with the Stannator, was asked to re-present Rachel with her club branded training kit. YouTube stars declare Kingfisher South West contender for UK’s best fish and chips SortedFood, the YouTube cooking channel and food website with almost two million followers, has declared Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth its South West contender for the UK’s best fish and chips in an online video.
SortedFood was created by old school friends Ben Ebbrell, Mike Huttlestone, Jamie Spafford and Barry Taylor. The episode, which to date has had almost 195,000 views, shows the team embarking on a road trip to seek out the UK’s best fish and chips, following a disappointing fish and chip experience in London. Having heard that Kingfisher held the title of UK’s No 1 Fish & Chip Takeway 2017,
they began their quest in the South West and filmed a road trip in which they visited three award-winning fish and chip outlets in the area. Although initially a little surprised to discover that Kingfisher was just a small takeaway in Chaddlewood, the team were blown away by the fish and chips and rated it the best of the three they’d tried which included Rockfish in Plymouth and The Scallop Shell in Bath. They tweeted ‘Perfect fish & chips!’ The film can be viewed at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=8foHZyWg_6c Ben Ebbrell, from the SortedFood team said: “Our mission at Sorted Food is to find the exceptional things in food and share
them with our global audience of food lovers. If we’ve learnt one thing in the last 10 years of doing this, it’s to not judge a book by it’s cover! “The winning ingredients here were the freshness and quality of the fish itself, and the obvious pride in the team that cook it day in and day out.” Craig Maw, co-owner of Kingfisher said: “It’s crazy to think the guys from SortedFood travelled over 200 miles just to try our food but we were delighted to have them in our shop. We love surprising people by showing them what a little chippy in Plymouth can do. They’re obviously passionate foodies so it was great that they gave us the thumbs up.
‘Perfect fish and chips’? We’ll take that!” Kingfisher was named the UK’s No 1 Fish & Chip Takeaway at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2017 and is known for having the ‘most sustainable seafood menu in the world’. It holds the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) quality award, is one of just two chippies to be awarded the maximum three star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association and won the SRA’s Source Fish Responsibly award at the Food Made Good Awards, 2017. It also has the highest rating from Fish to Fork. In November 2017, the shop was awarded gold at the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards in recognition of its gluten-free offering.

End of an era for Plympton’s ‘window lady’ Not everyone knew her by name, but there will be few who have ever passed through Plympton’s Ridgeway without at some stage noticing her eyecatching window displays and feeling a sense of admiration. Miska Newton has been brightening up Ridgeway for many years with her displays in the window of what was originally Clark & Weeks and which last year become part of Wolferstans. Miska joined Clark & Weeks in 2000 progressing to the position of head receptionist and archivist. The front widow of the firm’s premises in Ridgeway has a deep recess inside and Miska started putting various displays in it, some publicising local charities and others capturing the mood of particular time of year or special event. Before long her displays were capturing the attention of the passing public and became quite a talking point. Valentine’s, Halloween, the Chinese New Year, the Owl and the Pussycat and Children in Need have been just a few of the countless themes to Miska’s window displays over the years. There was even one to mark the recent Royal Wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. Now, though, after 18 years Miska is moving on to pastures new and she has packed away the window contents for the final time. As her colleagues were saying a fond farewell at a lunchtime reception a surprise delegation of past Stannators, headed by Plympton Community Council chairman Rose Hamley, dropped in to present Miska with an orchid as a thank you from the local community for the pleasure she has brought with her window displays over the years. Wiping tears from her eyes as the presentation was made Miska said: “This is wonderful and it’s such a surprise.” It is clear from the community’s response to the news she is leaving that much enjoyment has been obtained from Miska’s window displays over the years and there is a tinge of sadness that they will be no more. Emma Ashton said: “They will really be

missed, loved seeing the displays with the different seasons.” Those sentiments were echoed by Theresa Pickles who remarked: “I will really miss the displays that told of the passing seasons and special events. Always brought a smile to my face. Thank you so much for all that hard work. You will be missed.” Vanessa Hauty added: “Those displays were so wonderful, you put in so much care and attention, people could only stop to admire. Whenever I was called to Plympton Ridgeway, I made sure to come and have a look.” Current Stannator Natalie Harrison said: “Thank you for all the effort you have put into these lovely displays over the years. They were a delight to see and will be
missed along Ridgeway.” Former Stannator Andrew Hill, who was among the delegation making the presentation to Miska, said: “Miska’s window displays have been one of the highlights of trips to Ridgeway and have brought much joy to shoppers as they pass by the window. I am sure the whole community will wish to join me in wishing her all the best for the next chapter in her life and to say a big thank you from us all for your very imaginative displays over so many years.” Miska said she had received some help from local historian John Boulden for some of the displays. “He’s a stalwart and sometimes suggested ideas I hadn’t even thought of,” she added.

History and tradition marked at Burrator Representatives from Plympton were among more than 70 people invited by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth to attend the annual Traditional Survey of the Waterworks and Fishing Feast at Burrator Reservoir.
The original ‘Fishinge Feaste’ is believed to have originated during the Recordership of Sir Francis Drake the Second (1669 to 1717). The annual survey of the waterworks dates back even further with records from 1603 telling of the Mayor and his company riding forth on horseback to make a yearly inspection of the Leat and Head Weir and to celebrate the ongoing supply of water to Plymouth. South West Water, the body now responsible for water services in the locality, preserve this ancient ceremony which has important historical significance. This is done each year by the managing director of the company inviting the Lord Mayor of Plymouth and his/her chosen guests to attend the survey and feast. Guests assembled at the Weir Head where a goblet filled with pure water from the Reservoir was presented to Dr Stephen Bird, managing director of South West Water who toasted the memory of the first Sir Francis Drake who was responsible for bringing water from Dartmoor into Plymouth via his famous Drake’s Leat which was one of the first municipal water supplies in the country. Dr Bird in turn then passed the goblet to Lord Mayor Cllr Sam Davey who sipped from the goblet after formally toasting ‘to the pious memory of Sir Francis Drake’. The goblet was then passed in turn to the other attending guests who each said the same toast and sipped water from the goblet. A second goblet filled with wine was presented
to the Lord Mayor by Tracey Lee, chief executive of Plymouth City Council. The Lord Mayor then drank to the toast ‘May the Descendants of Him Who Brought Us Water Never Want Wine.’ The wine-filled goblet was then passed to Dr Bird and subsequently on to the other guests who each repeated in turn the toast and sipped the wine. Following the ceremony at the Weir Head the party and guests then proceeded to a marquee at the Rain Gauge Field for a buffet lunch. Once the food was consumed the Lord Mayor proposed a toast to South West Water after which a pair of loving cups filled with warm punch were passed among guests who sipped from the cups and pledged ‘Unity and Prosperity to the Town of Plymouth’. The ceremony has kept the wording of the original historic pledge which pre-dates Plymouth being granted city status. As well as Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Chris Mavin and Deputy Lady Mayoress Cllr Sue Dann, representatives from Plympton included current Stannator Natalie Harrison, youth ambassador Molly Disney, Plympton Community Council chairman Rose Hamley and her husband Greg and immediate past Stannator Andrew Hill and his partner Charlotte Willis. South West Water managing director Dr Stephen Bird told attendees at the end of the feast that Plymouth has enjoyed an uninterrupted water supply since 1591 and this is the 22nd consecutive year without any restrictions such as hosepipe bans. Dr Bird informed guests: “We’ve put the plug in at Burrator. We’ve stopped taking water from there and we’ve released water from Roadford near Okehampton. “We are not overly concerned with the levels at Burrator. Rest assured we will continue to supply Plymouth through the heatwave and beyond.” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

LIFE INTEREST TRUSTS or RIGHTS TO RESIDE If you are considering placing a life interest trust in your Will, or a right for someone to reside in your property, you will need to be familiar with the difference between these rights before completing your Will.
What is a Life Interest? A life interest is a trust. Although there are many variations the most common is where an asset (eg., a property or shares etc) are held on trust for the benefit of an individual (the life tenant) for his or her life time. The life tenant is entitled to the income generated from the trust for his or her lifetime but has no entitlement to the capital of the trust (the asset). The capital is preserved for the benefit of the remainder beneficiaries. On the death of the life tenant the capital is distributed to the remainder beneficiaries.
The Trustee of a life interest must balance the needs and interests of both the life tenant and the remainder beneficiaries when managing and investing the assets of the trust. Therefore, the Trustee must invest in assets which have both a capital growth element and an income producing element and must not advantage one over the other. This type of trust is often created in a testator’s Will where he or she wishes to financially support one individual during their lifetime but wishes to give the actual asset to another party. A typical example of this would be for a testator who has a current spouse from a second marriage and children from a first marriage. The testator would then preserve the capital for his or her children whilst providing his or her spouse with an income for his or her life time.
What is a Right to Reside? A right to reside is an entitlement to occupy a property for a specified time or for the life time of the beneficiary. The beneficiary’s entitlement would normally be subject to certain conditions such as, maintaining the property, paying all outgoings and keeping the property insured. The beneficiary cannot rent out the property nor is he or she entitled to receive any income from it. When the trust ends, the property is either transferred or sold and the net proceeds paid to the remainder beneficiaries.
This is also created in a testator’s Will where a testator provides for someone (usually the spouse) to have the use and benefit of the property for their lifetime whilst preserving the property for the benefit of another party (usually the children). If you would like to discuss life interests or rights to reside in more detail, please contact Catherine English at Howard and Over Solicitors on 01752 284063 or by email at catherine.english@howard-over.co.uk
It is also common to include in the right to residue, the ability for the Trustee to sell the property and purchase a more suitable property for the beneficiary to live in.

Children get ready for school at Kiddi Caru Able takes on more new challenges for Hannahs Staff at Kiddi Caru’s Plympton day nursery have been busy helping to prepare its preschool children and their parents for the exciting move to primary school. As part of the nursery’s school readiness programme, the staff have been liaising with primary schools in the area to ensure that the children have the confidence to take primary school in their stride. Teachers from the schools have visited the children at the nursery to introduce themselves and they have also provided photographs of their school for the children to look at and discuss. As well as photos of the teachers, the children have been able to see what the classrooms, wash rooms, playground, dining hall and even coat pegs look like in their new school. This helps them to familiarise themselves with the new environment and allows them to know what to expect when they arrive for their first day. The nursery also held a graduation ceremony for its 39 school leavers, applauding their achievements at the nursery to give them a confidence boost. Tracey Callan, nursery manager, said: “The idea of going to primary school can be quite daunting for the pre-schoolers and their parents. They are used to nursery life and the transition to school is a big step for them. “Their days will be very different there, so our school readiness programme aims to give them an insight into what it will be like while they are still in the safe and secure nursery environment. This helps to reduce any anxiety by letting them know what to expect when they bid farewell to us.” For further information about Kiddi Caru please visit the website at www.kiddicaru.com, or Facebook - www.facebook.com/Kiddicaru - or call 01752 330469.

Chance to star Deputy Lord Mayor takes to the air in Wizard of Oz Following on from their successful production of Alice in Wonderland staged at Plympton Academy earlier this yearm, LS Drama Workshops are now planning a production of The Wizard of Oz which will hit a local stage in early December. They are now looking for children aged between 4 and 14 who love to sing, dance and act to be apart of a fantastic production. A free taster session for interested children will take place at St Maurice Primary School on September 4. Anyone interested should contact workshop leader Laura Shepherd on 07939 930779 or e-mail LSDramaWorkshops@gmail.com to book a place. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)
Plymouth’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Chris Mavin, took to the air for an hour on Hospital Radio Plymouth on August 2.
Cllr Mavin, who lives in Plympton, appeared on Charlotte Willis’ Teatime Treats show where he answered questions and selected some of his favourite songs. He explained to listeners his pride in being chosen to be the Deputy Lord Mayor and spoke of his time as a shipwright in the Dockyard. He later became a trade union representative there and this subsequently became his springboard into politics. When asked about his favourite concert he recalled the time Van Morrison performed at Plymouth Pavilions and he also talked about bringing Soundwaves to Plymouth some years ago when he was chair of the Leisure Services Committee. Cllr Mavin also explained his aspirations for youth engagement in the Leigham area of the
Moor View Ward, which he represents. Listeners also heard of Cllr Mavin’s love of golf and of his involvement as a member of the local police choir. Among the songs he chose to be played were House of the Rising Sun by the Animals, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, Imelda May’s Johnny Got a Boom Boom and Question by The Moody Blues. Hospital Radio Plymouth is a registered charity which broadcasts 24 hours a day to Derriford Hospital as well as on the internet to the wider community. Earlier this year the charity picked up the Station of the Year Bronze Award at the National Hospital Radio Awards. The station is currently on the lookout for new volunteers and anyone interested should e-mail John Gerrans at membership@hospitalradioplymouth.org.uk for more details. Daredevil Able Sharp recently took part in a skydive and raised over £2,000 for Hannahs. This was a particularly amazing achievement as Able has a range of disabilities since contracting meningitis as a baby.
21 year old Able recently completed his Pathway to Employment course with The Key at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne. He is always looking for a new challenge and is a keen fundraiser. Able took part in a tandem skydive, jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet, which was organised by Sky Buzz at Dunkeswell Airfield in East Devon. Able said “I didn’t know what to expect and it was a very strange feeling falling through the sky. But I want to do more skydives!” On September 3, Able will be taking on a new challenge using a BOMA 7 allterrain wheelchair. He will be travelling from Hannahs Ivybridge to Tavistock accompanied by his support worker Sebastian Thompson on a road bike. This challenge is a warm up for a series of marathons they have planned for 2019. To support Able and Sebastian visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ ablesbomberchallenge Daniel Burke, head of fundraising, said “Everyone at Hannahs is extremely thankful for all of the time, effort and fundraising which Able has put in to making all of his challenges so successful. Able is a true ambassador for Hannahs and his engagement with the wider community has been inspiring”. Hannahs are always looking for people to take on challenges in aid of the charity. The show goes on for flower group Busy month ahead for St Mary’s in Plympton
Despite growing conditions this year described as ‘horrendous by chairman Ian Curzon-Berners, members of the Plympton Fuchsia and Geranium Group were able to put on a respectable display of exhibits at their annual Summer Show at Harewood House. The challenging growing conditions involved severe frost and snow earlier in the year and one of the longest spells of hot and dry weather for some years which has been experienced over the summer. Members were still, however, able to get a large amount of blooms and plants onto the benches for the public to come and view. David Carter scooped the Rowley Trophy for his novice entry of single or semi-double fuchsia and also picked up the Shillingham Plate for his club fuchsia plant and the DD Fabrication Trophy in another novice class for ‘any pelargonium other than zonal.’ Veteran exhibitor Mike Shopland won a number of pieces of silverware for his exhibits including the Saltram Bowl for his commercial hanging pot, the Gowen Trophy for single/semi-double fuchsia and the Sam Brown Shield for Best in Show for his half hanging basket of the same cultivar. Club president Heather Turtell also impressed judges with her wins including the PFGG Salver for her Amercian bred fuchsia, the Lloyds Bank Trophy for six single blooms on a board and the PFGG Multi-Pot Trophy for six double blooms on a board.

A new family friendly trail linking the Barbican and Sutton Harbour has been launched, offering families the chance to learn more about life under the sea – and win impressive monthly prizes. The Starfish Trail follows Stella the Starfish around Sutton Harbour, with trail boards located on the water’s edge to take visitors from the heart of the Barbican to the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) and Rockfish, which are located on the other side of the water. The trail is currently planned to run until November and there are a range of prizes up for grabs each month, donated by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, including a Sony PS4 console and an Amazon Fire Kids Edition 7 inch tablet. The NMA has also donated prizes ranging from cuddly toys to a family annual pass and a ‘Sleeping with the Sharks’ experience. Trail leaflets can be picked up from the Tourist Information Centre and the NMA, or downloaded from the Visit Plymouth website. There are eight boards along the trail, each with a question to answer. Participants who answer all eight questions can claim offers immediately from local businesses with their completed leaflets and then submit their details online via the Visit Plymouth website to enter the monthly prize draws. Amanda Lumley, executive director of Destination Plymouth, said: “The Starfish Trail is a great excuse to get children outside this summer and we hope families will enjoy exploring Plymouth’s historic harbour. “There’s so much for everyone to see and do around Plymouth’s waterfront, for visitors and local families. It’s one of three possible ways to travel between the Barbican and Sutton Harbour – by boat, on the trail or over the temporary walkway, which is now open over the Sutton Harbour lock while the main bridge is closed for repairs. Pedestrians will be routed across the inner lock gates and along quays via a series of paths – including crossing the industrial inner lock gates. A separate release is available with more information. Prayer Group Tuesdays 9.30am-10.30am (In the Lounge). In all the hustle and bustle of life these days, people struggle to cope, but look to fill that gap in their lives where something is missing. That gap can be filled with the loving family of God in a local church. Giving up a bit of time for regular prayer, together with others, can help you cope with the stresses and worry that life throws at you. We provide a non-judgemental circle of friendship and welcome everyone, regardless of background, luggage and history, to come and seek our friendship. We open our doors every week, for anybody and everybody to walk in freely and pray with us. Every word spoken is treated with the upmost confidence and privacy, along with unconditional friendship. Come along and pray with us - life is easier to cope with among friends. You can come in and out as you need and should you need to stay longer or talk to anyone at the end, you will not be turned away. If the doors are locked, knock on the window (room on right-hand end of the church). You do not need to attend any church to come and pray with us. Plymouth charity, Little Things & Co, has been presented with a cheque for £3,300 by the staff of city law firm, GA Solicitors. Little Things & Co. was named the firm’s charity of the year after being voted in by its 79 employees. Over the last 12 months, it has benefited from a wide variety of fundraising efforts by the team such as dress down days, bake sales, quiz nights and sporting activities. Little Things & Co. offers practical and emotional support to those suffering from the loss of a baby. Initially established to provide bespoke clothing to tiny babies who had died, the charity has now expanded its services to include support group meetings, a dedicated memorial garden within Derriford hospital, literature and additional support to relieve the mental suffering of those affected by baby bereavement or loss. The money raised by GA Solicitors’ team will be put towards the ongoing support provided by the charity, such as the postage of clothing, provision of support literature, catering at events, maintenance of the memorial garden and much more. Katy McKenna of GA Solicitors commented: “Little Things & Co. is a much needed local charity which Clog dancing Thursdays A fun way to exercise! provides essential support to parents and family members locally and further afield. “The team has worked tirelessly over the last year to raise our biggest charity total to date. To be able to support Little Things & Co. in such a manner and help them to continue to provide comfort to so many families is truly humbling.” LeighAnne Wright, founder of Little Things & Co, added: “We are so pleased to have been chosen by GA Solicitors as their charity of the year. The amount they have raised is staggering and this kind of support is invaluable to a charity of our size. “More than 3,600 stillbirths occur every year in the UK, and around 20% of women suffer from miscarriage at some point in their lives. These are not small numbers and yet baby loss is still somewhat of a taboo subject. I can’t thank the GA team enough and will look forward to continuing a lasting relationship with them.” GA Solicitors’ nominated charity for 2018/19 is Action Duchenne, a charity which raises awareness and money for research regarding Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Liz is an ideal role model Liz Orgill, director of Plymouth-based Construction Materials Online has been chosen to be a UK role model to inspire a future generation of construction professionals.
As marketing director at Construction Materials Online (CMO), Liz has been instrumental in the success of the UK’s largest online roofing merchant, Roofing Superstore, one of CMO’s three specialist eCommerce stores. The role model initiative has been launched by UK Construction Week to act as a platform to inspire a new generation of construction professionals to join the industry. Role models take part in an outreach programme, going to colleges and schools to talk to students and teachers at key stages of their education to explain what inspired them to choose construction as a career and bust any myths around the image of construction. Liz joined CMO - which is based in Burrington Way - with 15 years’ marketing experience under her belt. Since the launch of Roofing Superstore in 2009, and together with Drainage Superstore and Insulation Superstore, the brands now sell over 50,000 products for the building and construction industry. From the company’s achievements as ‘firstto-market’ 10 years ago, CMO now has an enviable growth trajectory and plans to exceed its £27 million turnover this year. Liz is passionate about the industry and a great advocate of working in construction. She said: “I’m delighted to share my experiences and discuss what an exciting and important time it is to join construction.” Church Saturdays 1 till 4. USEFUL Fishkeepers celebrate anniversary NUMBERS September 2018 31
@PlymChronicle
The Plymouth Fishkeepers Society is celebrating its 70th Anniversary in 2018, having been founded in 1948 by a local school teacher who placed an advert in a local newspaper.
It was for anyone interested in the aquatic hobby to attend an inaugural meeting on June 22 to form a Society. From these small beginnings the present Society has grown over the 70 years and has seen many changes in the hobby. That is not to say that the Society itself has experienced its ups and downs in terms of membership, but at the present time it is doing well with 43 members. The society celebrated the event with a dinner at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club on June 22 when present
and past members enjoyed the humour of the after dinner speaker Peter Randle from the Marine Biological Society. Finding a suitable meeting place at a reasonable cost can be a problem for any group or society. In Plymouth, the Fishkeepers Sociery are fortunate to have the Hyde Park Social Club for their meetings on the first and second Wednesdays of each month. The first meeting is the more formal, consisting of visual lectures given by either Society members or by guest speakers. The second meeting is centred on the Table Show where members hope to win trophies which are presented at the end of the year. A short talk on an aquatic subject is presented by a member while the fish are being judged,
RAF celebrations

As part of the celebrations, the Field Marshall Hugh Trenchard (First Air Marshall of the RAF) Token will arrive at the RAF and Allied Air Forces monument on Plymouth Hoe at 11am on Sunday September 9 in the presence of civic dignitaries, military personnel and the public. The following day, Monday September 10 the Token will be on view to the public at Raffles Club, Ermington Terrace, Mutley between 11am and 5pm and on Tuesday September 11 and Friday September 14 at House of Fraser (5th Floor) Royal Parade between 10.30am and 3pm. On Wednesday September 12 a special event will be held at RAF Harrowbeer in the presence of military
and civic dignitaries between 10am and 2.30pm with the possibility of a fly pass (weather permitting!), while on the following day Thursday September 13 it will be at the Visitor Centre, Ford Park Cemetery, Ford Park Road, Mutley between 11am and 4pm. Refreshments will be available. Finally on Saturday September 15, the Field Marshall’s Token will leave Plymouth and head for the RAF Association (Bodmin Branch) who will put the Token on show and then pass it on to St Austell and so on. Battle of Britain Day will be celebrated on Sunday September 16 and a service will be held at St Andrew’s Minster, Royal Parade, Plymouth at 11am in the presence of military personnel, civic dignitaries, cadets and federation of ex services standards and veterans (collections at all these events will go to the RAF Wings Appeal Charity’).
THE
Experience ‘Isn’t faith just abandoning reason?’ That’s a question that sometimes comes up when my friends discuss faith with me.
Not surprisingly, it’s my friends who wouldn’t call themselves Christian who talk more about this than those who would. For them, the nature of faith is more important than the words we Christians use to talk about it. Is it real? Can you touch it, experience it? Does it make a Ian difference in real life or is it Pilkington just words? Good questions. Any faith that doesn’t stand up under such scrutiny isn’t really faith at all. And sometimes, the toughest interrogation comes from children. My grand-daughter recently said: “I don’t actually believe in God.” OK, a bit young for denying God’s existence I thought (she’s five) but let’s see what’s going on here. “Why not, I do?” I asked. “Well, have you ever seen Him?” was her rational query. Pretty good for a five-year-old. “Can you see the wind?” I countered (pretty good for a 54-year-old, but sadly not my

allowing time for members to be able to mingle and chat about the hobby. At the end of the evening there is a Questions and Answers slot for members who may have a fishkeeping problem. At each meeting there is a raffle and auction of fish bred by Society members and other aquatic items. The Society aims to produce a varied programme throughout the year which will appeal to both the beginner and the more advanced aquarist. The current programme includes lectures by guest speakers with talks by Maidenhead Aquatics on the aquatic trade, Emperor Tropicals on planted aquariums and Dr Peter Burgess presenting an illustrated talk about the Berlin Zoo Aquarium. Interests among members are diverse, and there is always someone in the Society who can answer questions covering most aspects of the hobby. There are members who belong to specialist societies such as the Catfish Association of
Great Britain and the British Killifish Association. Aquatic plants are not forgotten: one of the trophies in the Home Aquarium and Pond Competition is for the best plant. Within in the Society there is an active interest in aquatic photography and members can show their photos in an annual competition. It goes without saying that in such an active Society there is also keen interest in breeding fish and fresh water shrimps. Again some people specialise in one group, whereas others have a more general interest. The Society magazine ‘Fishy News’ is produced four times a year and contains a diverse array of articles on aspects of fish and fishkeeping written by members, while a monthly newsletter is also produced to cover forthcoming events and Table Show results. There is a good cross section of members ranging from fairly newcomers to people who have been in the hobby for a long time. Visitors are welcome to attend one of the Society’s meetings to find out more. If you have just bought your first fish tank then Plymouth Fishkeepers Society is the place to be. The Society is also on Facebook. John Rundle, Chairman.
QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS... BY IAN PILKINGTON, TRUSTEE OF CROSS RHYTHMS PLYMOUTH own work - I think that’s a quote from Billy Graham, so we’re on good ground). This took us off on an exploration of the similarities between the wind and the experience of God. I can’t see the wind, but I feel and see the effects of the wind. The Holy Spirit is likened to (and named) a wind in many places in the Good Book. Relationship with Him is offered as a very definite experience. And he won’t be tamed or contained, much like the wind. She wasn’t convinced – that’ll take more than my words. Faith does sometimes require us to take a step that seems contrary to our reason. The reason being that reason is sometimes not as reasonable a basis for life as we would hope. Reason based on previous, unrelated experience, can cloud our judgment. Ask anyone who has been rejected in love only to find love again with someone else. That took a step of unreasonable trust, to begin with. And it’s sustained when they find their trust rewarded. “Complete trust or confidence in someone or something” is one common definition of
faith. Some people mock believers for their ‘blind faith’ and say that reason trumps that kind of faith. I would tend to agree – except God doesn’t ask us to sustain faith without experience. Trust in any person, is sustained when the object of trust proves him or herself. Amazingly, God submits Himself to this test. As the apostle Paul wrote (and bear in mind he had a huge experience of God to convert him on the road to Damascus): ‘I pray … [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself]’. (Ephesians 3:19, Amplified Bible). Christian faith isn’t merely about believing the impossible in the face of reason. Instead, the experience of God is the reason behind so much that is done in the face of impossible odds, in the name of the Love that billions across the globe and throughout history have discovered. Stepping into the experience can take a leap of faith, a deep breath and a jump of trust. In my experience it’s been worth it to find the reality that sustains my trust.

Two Plymouth veterans who have discovered their creative talents Two Plymouth veterans have had their work exhibited at a new Help for Heroes exhibition in London.
Veterans Nick Martin and Kevin Preston, exhibited at the Creative Force exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London and online. They joined 80 other individuals, supported by the charity, who are showing how the support of the great British public has made a difference to their lives, and the importance creativity is to their recovery journeys. With seven people medically discharged from the Armed Forces every single day, the need for support is growing faster than ever before. Help for Heroes believes that those who have put their lives second deserve a second chance at life. Thanks to the Creative Force exhibition, those supported by Help for Heroes can share their inspiring stories. Nick Martin Diagnosed only three years ago, the past 36 years of Nick’s life have been controlled by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The former stores accountant with the Royal Navy spent most of his time at sea and saw action in the Falklands Campaign: “I was on the Atlantic Conveyor when she was hit. It’s the reason why I ended up coming to Help for Heroes all those years later.” Approaching Help for Heroes two years ago, he credits the charity in helping him to have confidence in his ability to achieve: “It’s opened up a new world to me. Everything I’d done before

has been solitary. I wasn’t a social creature at all. I didn’t go out, I didn’t do anything. Suddenly I was getting emails to be involved with other people doing things.” Art has been hugely beneficial to Nick, helping him to relax, focus his mind and manage his PTSD: “I can spend hours with my thoughts just engrossed in what I am doing. It’s quite fiddly and technical and I must concentrate on what I am doing. While I am doing that my mind isn’t elsewhere, giving me troubles or taking me to places I don’t want to go.” Kevin Preston Joining the Coldstream Guards in 1981, Kevin served around the world. While on patrol in Northern Ireland, he fell off a wall landing on his backpack. Returning to work, Kevin was unaware that the accident was to have bigger implications later in life: “In those days if you had an injury in the Army you were no good to anybody. So, you kept all that quiet.” Leaving the Army in 1985 Kevin found his transition to civilian life difficult: “When I came out I couldn’t settle. I drank heavily and neglected my body. Even though I had this pain down my leg.” Ongoing pain forced Kevin to give up manual work, but he soon stared a new career. Using the sign writing training he’d learnt in the Army, he began sketching people and their pets, took a business course and set up a studio. Then, one day his Army accident caught up with him. Unable to feel his leg Kevin was taken into
hospital where he discovered the full extent of his injuries. He had fractured his back which hadn’t healed properly, causing nerve damage: “This was a big wake-up call. At that time, I lost my mobility, I was in a wheelchair. I didn’t know what to do with myself. My business was gone, my trade was gone. I was in a state.” Nevertheless, Kevin continued to draw and paint, and in 2005 he joined Help for Heroes: “It’s helped me to bring myself back to normal. “I have a lot more belief in myself and this is all down to the Help for Heroes’ Recovery Centre in Plymouth, where I belong to the art group and enjoy every minute of my recovery.” Since then Kevin has sold his work in Devon galleries to raise money for the charity. Has exhibited in London, and is delighted his work is being shown at Creative Force: “I’m chuffed to bits. The Mall Galleries is one of the top galleries in London. Right by St James Palace which I used to guard. I’m over the moon.” In the last 10 years, military charity Help for Heroes has supported over 19,000 wounded injured and sick service personnel, veterans and their families to find new direction, new passions and empower them to create new lives for themselves. The Mall Galleries exhibition can be viewed online at www.creative-force.helpforheroes.org.uk A Help for Heroes Creative Force Exhibition will be taking place at Ocean Studios in Royal William Yard from September 18 to 23.
