Sherford Life Sherford officially launches new Last month I asked whether you were looking forward to the great British Summer of sport. A lot has happened since then!

We saw Andy Murray return to grass court tennis – and to winning – at the Queen’s Club championship. We saw our women’s football team get achingly close to a World Cup final. We enjoyed the excitement and drama of Wimbledon. And then there was the cricket… I don’t know about you, but I consider myself a pretty poor cricketer. I wouldn’t back myself to score any runs as a batsman or to take any wickets as a bowler. I don’t understand all the technical ins and outs of which way to hit the ball and when, or where to stand and run to if you’re fielding. I’m not fit enough to throw or hit the ball that hard, or to run fast enough to be any good to the By Revd Tom Brassil team. Nonetheless, as of Sunday July 14, I am a Cricket World Cup winner! Obviously I didn’t make the final 11-man squad for the final, but I celebrated with them. They won it for us, for England. And so it was right that so many of us excitedly told one another, “We won!” It was a once in a lifetime event, a definite ‘where-where-you’ moment. I had just finished putting the children to bed in time to watch the ‘super over’ (cricket’s version of a penalty shootout, as I learnt that day). Where were you? What was it like watching it, or following the score? Perhaps you weren’t really that fussed. Or perhaps you got wrapped up in the emotional rollercoaster, feeling every shred of elation and fear along with the players on the pitch. Almost like we were there! Sport’s not the only time we have others represent us. In the Bible we find that God sent us a representative called Jesus. He was the one who was able to do the things we couldn’t – live a perfect life that we could never hope to live, and die a death that we would hope never to die. Wonderfully, the Bible says that Jesus did those things as our representative. Through him we can be treated as having died and been raised to new life, a fresh start. Just as we can shout, “We won!” along with the England cricket team, those of us who choose Jesus as our representative can share in the victory he won over death, as well as the life forever that he has. If you want to read more about this, turn to Romans chapter 6 in the Bible. Sport (of whatever flavour you love) can bring people together wonderfully. We can all celebrate our team’s victories together. Likewise the victory Jesus won on our behalf brings us together. That’s why you’ll find us celebrating together every Sunday morning at 10am in Sherford Vale School. Why not come and join the celebration? If you have any questions about Sherford life, or if you would like to chat more about how Jesus represents us, please contact me at tom@ sherfordchurch.net

gardens built by local students Two new gardens have been opened at Sherford - entirely designed and built by local schoolchildren.

Plymouth’s Deputy Lord Mayor Coun Terri Beer officially opened the spectacular spaces, created by pupils from Coombe Dean. It is the latest initiative from the Sherford Consortium and its partners, to nurture young talent and develop local skills in construction. The gardens, designed and built by a dozen Year 10 students from the nearby secondary school, were made over the course of a week during part of their work experience placements. The 15-year-old students worked in teams and were given total freedom over their designs, with help and support on hand as needed. The Sherford Skills Training Scheme and YGS Landscapes worked together to ensure the smooth delivery of the two winning designs. The intention is to repeat this experience next year and allow more students to flex their creative muscles and design further garden spaces. Located by the Sherford Skills Training Centre, the gardens will be open to all those using the centre, which has already welcomed hundreds of apprentices and site workers through its doors as part of its skills programme. As Sherford develops and access becomes possible to the Skills Training Centre for residents from their homes, the gardens will be open to the wider community to enjoy. Steve Warren Brown, managing director of YGS Landscapes, commented on the success of the programme: “The students had never experienced creating a garden from scratch before, and they worked hard all week to ensure the gardens looked incredible for the opening. Our aim is to make this an annual event, allocating space that our young people can reinvent to make commemorative gardens.” Steve Ricketts, skills coordinator for the Sherford Training Scheme, said: “It is important to expose students to the opportunities open to them after they finish school, which is why these fun but vocational placements are so valuable. “By dedicating an area of land to this project, Sherford has given the pupils an opportunity to be creative and learn a host of new skills. We’ve been delivering a refresher course to YGS Landscapes this week too, so it has been great to see new skills developing alongside established professionals honing their skills.”

Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Terri Beer with her consort Peter Beer officially opens the new gardens

Pete Castley from the Sherford Consortium, said: “As a sustainable development, we are committed to harnessing local talent and advancing the skills of young people from the community within the construction industry. Thank you to the students who have contributed towards making Sherford an even greener and more beautiful place.” Nikki Gould, work experience manager at Coombe Dean, said: “We are so grateful for all the hard work and time that the YGS and Sherford Skills teams have put into making this project a unique opportunity for our students who expressed an interest in a work placement in construction and the trades. “Steve Ricketts and Steve Warren-Brown have made several visits to our students at Coombe Dean, working and guiding them into designing their ‘Show Garden’ over the last few months. After visiting Sherford to do an initial site visit, the students were taken on a trip to Plants Galore to look at materials and plants to complement their gardens. “It’s fantastic to see how the winning designs have become a reality over the past week, and the maturity and dedication we have witnessed from our students has been a credit to Coombe Dean, as well as the students themselves and Sherford. This offer has exceeded our expectations and we are so grateful to everyone who has given their time and dedication into ensuring our students have been given a first-class work experience.” Marking the ceremonial event with a classic ribbon cutting, Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor, Terri Beer, said: “This is such an inspired

idea. Young people creating gardens from scratch and learning all about design, the environment and picking up new skills along the way. “I have been following all the videos and photos that have been released during the last week on social media with great interest and I’ve been able to send messages of encouragement to the young people involved. It’s great to see so much effort being made to make sure young people who live in or near this new town feel part of it.” Local businesses Bradfords, YGS Landscapers Ltd, Groundfix and Plymouth Construction Training Group donated materials toward the project.

Graham is Plympton Rotary’s new president

Excuse me...but where should we park our tank?

Plympton based accountant Graham Beeson is the new president of the Rotary Club of Plympton.

These enterprising students (from left) Jay Johnson, Connor Perry and Owen Clarkson managed to acquire a tank to take them to the prom

Plympton Academy’s Year 11 students saw the year out in style at their prom recently.

They arrived at Boringdon Park Golf Club on a sunny evening in sports cars, limos and some students even arrived in a tank! Dressed in stunning gowns and sharp suits the youngsters graced the red carpet before spending the evening celebrating the end of their GCSEs and their five years at Plympton Academy. Principal of Plympton Academy, Lisa Boorman said: “The prom was a great way to end the academic year for our Year 11s and we are looking forward to welcoming many back into the sixth form in September and those who are leaving we wish them every success for the future.”

KF Kitchens raising money for Macmillan Derinda Damarell of KF Kitchens at Faraday Mill decided to take on a challenge this year to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Following the success of the coffee morning KF Kitchens hosted last year, Derinda wanted to do more for such a worthy cause, so she decided to take on one of the Marathon Hikes organised by Macmillan in eight fantastic locations around the country. Derinda said: “I decided to do the hike from Weymouth to Wareham along the challenging but magnificent Jurassic Coast, a total of 26.6 miles in one day. I was lucky enough to have my long-time friend Catherine Duckett take on this challenge with me. “We completed the Hike in 12 hours and 40 minute and I never thought that it would have been as emotional and difficult as it was, through the rain, wind and finally sun we battled through every step to the finish line. We laughed, we cried, we encouraged

3

each other to keep going. “The Macmillan team were amazing, it was all so well organised. A big thank you to all of the people who made the day so special from the people handing out sweets, to the man helping us to cross the roads safely. From all the people who kept us fed and watered, the support and encouragement at the pit stops, to the lady in the first aid tent at the 20 mile pit stop who sorted out my blisters and finally the lady who handed me my medal and asked if I was ok as the tears came.” Derinda raised over £1200 smashing her original £250 target. She thanked all the individuals and businesses for their support. KF Kitchens will be holding another Macmillan coffee morning on September 28 along with the ‘Great KF Bake Off’ where bakers can enter their cake and have it judged with the best cake winning a prize. Entry is £5 will all monies raised going to Macmillan Cancer Support.

For Graham this is the second time he has taken on the reigns of Plympton Rotary and while holding the presidency he will also be carrying on the duties of District Treasurer for Rotary in the South West Peninsula. Although the club will continue as to support many local, national and international causes, Graham’s nominated charity for the 2019/20 year will be the Rotary End Polio Now campaign. He said: “There is a real danger of Polio fatigue and, in part, this is evidenced by the small increase in the numbers contracting the Wild Polio Virus this year although the principle cause must be the unstable political and religious situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Maybe, their relative successes in the World Cup Cricket may help to make things easier?” Graham went on to add: “I think the increasing concern regarding the reemergence of measles now fewer children are being vaccinated illustrates the importance of ensuring the same thing doesn’t happen with Polio. The dangers of a worldwide polio epidemic resulting from a failure to finally eradicate this disease is something we should all fear. With the 2 for 1 support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation towards funds Rotary raises, I’m more than happy to take advantage of Bill Gates’ generosity in tripling any donations we make.” Since Rotary started the campaign to end polio in the early 1980’s, cases have dropped from over 350,000 per year to low-mid double digits and with Nigeria hopefully soon to be declared endemic free, only two countries remain endemic. This final stretch is the hardest part but Rotary are truly close to seeing an end to Polio. The new Plympton Rotary President also has a message for the local community to which the club serves. “There are lots of local community projects we would love to get involved in but we are short of manpower this year because like many other Rotary and similar service clubs, age and health have caught up with us leading to some members moving on to other things but if anyone in Plympton is involved in a community project and think Rotary may be able to help, please get in touch. After all we cannot help, if we are not asked. Likewise, if you would like to help us by becoming a Rotarian, again, please get in touch at plymptonrotary@ outlook.com.” Graham is already thinking ahead to Christmas and the club’s popular Santa runs. “We look forward to seeing you all in the run up to Christmas when Santa visits to spread the goodwill of the season and if anyone wants to help on the rounds, please drop us an email or contact us via our Facebook page.” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

The land for Plymouth’s new crematorium has been secured.

The 17-acre site on the eastern edge of the city, off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park, was purchased by Plymouth City Council in July. The transfer of the site marks another major milestone in the £12 million scheme, which will see Plymouth’s aging crematoria replaced with a state-of-the-art, modern facility. Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “This is a really important milestone in our journey to the new facility, so it is

exciting to be able to stand on the site and visualise how it will all look. “It’s really important that we retain the peacefulness and beauty of this site and I think that the designs that we have complement it perfectly.” The designs for the new crematorium have been developed with insights from the public and the funeral industry, received during consultation events held last year. Produced by local architects Stride Treglown and Aecom, they show single-storey buildings nestled in green spaces with water pooled around the ceremony rooms. Inside, light and open ceremony spaces with large windows are in keeping with the

desire to provide a modern quality facility. Reflective spaces will be created for memorials and scatterings alongside landscaping that embraces the local environment and ecology. It is also hoped that a green burial option will be available at the new site. The existing cemeteries at Efford and Weston Mill will continue to be active for burial and memorials with the chapels available for bookings. A building contractor will now be procured to complete the build with work on the site set to begin later this year. More information on the new crematorium are at www.plymouth.gov.uk/futurecrem

Plymouth’s lifejacket scheme goes national Plymouth’s trail blazing lifejacket scheme is to be rolled out across the country.

Fishing crews based in Plymouth were all offered free E250 lifejackets with personal locator beacons, thanks to an innovative project set up by Plymouth City Council. Now the scheme will be rolled out in fishing ports up and down the country as part of the National Marine Safety Action Plan which is designed to help reduce loss of life and accidents within the local fishing industry. Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “This is brilliant news. Britain’s Ocean City is leading the way in protecting those who risk their lives at sea. Where Plymouth leads, others follow! “Fishing is massively important to Plymouth – it’s where 13 per cent of the national catch is landed – but we are all too aware that it is a dangerous industry and we wanted to see if there was more we could do to keep our people safe at sea. “I could not be more proud of the work we have done here to make this happen. It’s been a real joint effort between the fishing community – the crews, their families have all been right behind us – they’re buzzing about it on Twitter.” The project received funding from the European

Maritime and Fisheries Fund and the Maritime Management Organisation and was designed with input from fishermen’s representatives, SEAFISH and the emergency services. It aimed to create a more coordinated community approach to training and equipment to reduce the number of fishermen’s lives lost at sea. Since it launched the scheme in 2017, 250 life jackets have been distributed and 60 more are being allocated at the moment. The council has taken calls from Cornwall to Inverness and all ports in between asking for advice on how to set up the scheme. Now as part of the Marine Safety Action Plan £250,000 will be set aside to extend the fishing lifejacket scheme, meaning an extra 500 lifejackets and personal locator beacons for boats across the UK. A further £700,000 has also been allocated to provide fishers lifesaving training. The life-jackets have in-built locator beacons and were distributed by Saltash company, MarineCo. The project was designed with input from fishermen’s representatives and the emergency services to create a more coordinated community approach to training and equipment to reduce the number of fishermen’s lives lost at sea.

FISHY FACTS ABOUT PLYMOUTH • Plymouth lands 13 per cent of England’s catch each year • It supports around 900 fishermen and 500 fishing vessels • It is the administration port with the largest number of fishermen in the UK • In 2017 the fish quay and market had a turnover of £18.8m, making Sutton Harbour of national significance for landing and exporting fish.

The scheme has cross-party support from councillors and MPs as well as the Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authorities, RNLI, Maritime Coastguard Agency and importantly, the fishermen and their families.

Council Leader Tudor Evans ‘This is brilliant news’

Milestone show for Plympton gardeners

Plympton Gardeners Association are gearing up for what will be a special summer show this year their 70th since the Association was founded in 1948.

The catalyst to the formation of the association was a chance conversation on a spring evening in 1948. Local gardener Alf Crocker was unloading pea and bean sticks when a passer-by remarked that if there was a local garden society the sticks could be purchased more cheaply. This conversation sowed a seed in Mr Crocker’s mind and after discussions with two other local gardeners, Mr W Jakeway and Mr J Buzzacott, the trio decided to write to the National Allotment and Garden Society for advice. After that advice was forthcoming along with some useful pamphlets these three men became the founding members of what was originally called the Plympton Allotment and Gardening Society. An inaugural meeting was arranged at the then Geasons School in Ridgeway. The initial joining fee was set at two shillings along with an annual subscription of the same sum. Subsequently it was decided to stage an annual show and General Mudge was invited to open the first one which was held at Geasons School. By 1953 membership of the Society had risen to 153. Harewood House eventually became the venue for the annual show but following a fire there in 1985 the venue was switched to the Rees Centre until 1988 by which time a new Harewood House community centre had been built on the site of its fire-damaged pre-predecessor. This year’s show will once again be at Harewood House on Saturday August 17 with an official opening by Stannator Fiona Smith at 1.40pm, 10 minutes after doors open for public admission. Show classes will include flowers, fruit, vegetables, domestic science, floral art, handicraft and junior exhibits. All members of the community are invited to take part and exhibit something. More information and show schedules are available from Paul Hutchings on 01752 519504. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

Yealmpstone Farm Primary School expansion is completed A major school expansion project totalling £2.8 million has been completed at Yealmpstone Farm Primary School.
Plymouth City Council identified Yealmpstone as an ideal site to receive government basic need funding in order for it to grow and provide much needed additional places to cope with an increase in demand.
The expansion works mean the Plymptonbased school will now be able to offer 420 places for local children, exactly double the 210 it could previously provide.
Councillor Jon Taylor, Cabinet Member responsible for Education said: “Continued investment in our schools is absolutely crucial if we are to maintain high standards and encourage families to raise their children in Plymouth. Having good schools is crucial for Plymouth’s growth and development.”
The City Council has invested £2,800,000 from the Capital Investment Programme which includes £454,000 Of Section 106 Funding, which has been generated by the housing developments in the area to support the provision of additional school places.
The works have included a brand new twostorey eight-classroom extension with toilets, storage facilities, group rooms and a music studio. Additional external play space has also been created as well as the formation of larger foundation classrooms and the re-

Your local legal experts Lasting Powers of Attorney – a document more important than a Will? It’s a controversial suggestion and perhaps one that you would immediately be inclined to disagree with. How can a document which gives people control over your assets but gives no beneficial entitlement to them be so important? Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are documents within which you (The Donor) appoint named individuals (Attorneys) to make decisions on your behalf in your lifetime either if you lose capacity or in the case of financial decisions, while you have capacity if you require assistance. The reality is that all decisions made by an Attorney on your behalf will have a direct impact on you in your lifetime whereas the provisions of your Will will only take effect on your death and you will not be alive to experience the result of its terms. Choices relating to your place of residence, how your money is spent and what care you receive can all potentially be made by your Attorneys. In the knowledge that your lifestyle and future could be directly affected by good or bad decisions that your Attorney(s) make on your behalf you may be starting to think that an LPA is more of a priority than first thought. LPAs are often associated with old age but in recent years we have seen first-hand how young household names can quickly and unexpectedly find themselves in situations which compromise their capacity. Television presenter Richard Hammond and racing driver Michael Schumacher have both been involved in accidents which have left them for different periods without mental capacity to make

decisions for themselves. It is unknown whether either had made LPAs at the time of their accidents. We describe LPAs to clients as insurance policies that you may never need to use but are in place just in case. If you are yet to make LPAs we suggest that you start by considering these four questions: • WHO? You can have up to four Attorneys and four replacement Attorneys. Your Attorneys must be trustworthy and be people that you would feel comfortable making decisions on your behalf. • WHAT? There are two types of LPAs, one that covers health and welfare decisions and another that covers financial decisions. Depending on your circumstances you may also need to consider a Business LPA? • WHEN? You can choose to restrict a financial LPA’s use so that Attorneys only act when you lose capacity. If appointing more than one Attorney you can also include restrictions on when Attorneys can make decisions on their own or when they must make decisions together. • HOW? If you have more than one Attorney do you want them to make all decisions together (jointly) or have the flexibility to make some decisions together and some alone (jointly and severally)? Ultimately both Wills and LPAs are documents that we advise all clients to prepare. Neither is more important than the other as they have different roles and together provide a full complement of lifetime and estate planning. However, we would urge clients to think again before dismissing the need for an LPA as the scope of its potential use is priceless. At Wolferstans we recognise that once you have appointed Attorneys it is crucial that they have the right knowledge and guidance to act in their important role. huge impact on the quality of education on offer by providing an outstanding learning environment. We truly feel privileged to work in such a beautiful school every day.”
The works at the school have been carried out by Ryearch Ltd who have managed the construction and development of dozens of schools across Plymouth over the past thirty years. Mark Wildman managing director at Ryearch Ltd said: “We were delighted to be selected to deliver this scheme at Yealmpstone Farm Primary School, having completed an earlier project here around 20 years ago. “The project was delivered in partnership with the school and Plymouth City Council and we’re really pleased to see how thrilled the staff and pupils were with the outcome of the project.” Chair of Governors Darren Jones said: “We’re all really pleased with the expansion project and have already got our sights set on the next stage of our development to further enhance the extensive school grounds to maximise all areas of the curriculum through outdoor learning. “The children have already chosen the gym trail and bike trail to be installed around the site. This work has been funded by our Friends of Yealmpstone Farm, who are a very active support group.”
It is a statutory requirement for Plymouth City Council as the Local Education Authority to provide sufficient pupil places to meet the demands of the growing population of the city.

Teenager Ben roars to speedway success A student from Plympton Academy was a runner up in his first international speedway event held in Belgium recently.

Thirteen year old Ben Trigger, started on a mini speedway bike when he was just six years old, and aspires to go professional and represent his club and country in the sport. Ben came third in the International 125cc in Belgium, which included all the top British riders. “It was unbelievable to race abroad in a place where I’ve never ridden in that heat but to get third out of 15 different nationalities left me speechless,” said Ben. His Dad Lee is his number one fan and encouraged him to get into the sport back when he was team manager of the Plymouth Speedway. Ben is still a mascot for Plymouth but this year joined The Ashfield Giants, Glasgow’s junior team, who compete in the Northern Junior League. He has a busy summer ahead as he’s entered into a six roundsummer series being held at Redcar speedway. He is also in his second year of competing in the British Youth Championship, in which he finished fourth last year and is currently in fourth place with three more rounds to go. Dad Lee, who grew up with speedway supporting the Exeter Falcons, before going on to be a mechanic for Exeter rider Mark Simmonds and then Plymouth speedway team manager, says he is very proud of Ben. “It’s a great buzz for me as Ben is doing what I would have loved to have done, I think I love it as much as he does. I am very proud of what he has already achieved but to put on a senior race bib for a club and country would be a fantastic goal.” Principal of Plympton Academy, Lisa Boorman said: “Everyone at school is very proud of Ben’s achievements and we wish him the best of luck in the British Youth Championship.” Ben’s next event takes place in Poland later this month. He’s been selected by the ACU Federation to take part in the European 125cc Youth Track Racing Cup Final.

Ben Trigger hopes to become a professional speedway rider

Raising money for MIND through martial arts

@PlymChronicle

Sailor Russ takes his prayer message around the country Sailing as a hobby has many benefits, but most people wouldn’t expect one of those to be the chance to spread love and joy through professing your faith.

With approximately one in four people in the UK experiencing a mental health issue each year, it is as important as ever to support the charities working endlessly to support those suffering, writes Erin Downes.

In order to raise money for one of Plymouth’s local mental health charities, Devon Mind, members of the Toshi-Ryu Karate Cub held a one-of-a-kind Martial Arts Day on July 20 at the Heles School sports complex in Plympton. They encouraged the public to try something new, whilst also allowing those who have prior training to experience a wider variety of different martial arts. Martial arts can offer a myriad of benefits for both the body and mind helping to develop fitness and muscle strength and also improving mental wellbeing. In children, martial arts can greatly improve confidence and self-esteem, as well as teaching young people to resolve conflict in a healthy way – discouraging physical fights and instead teaching to respond in a less aggressive way. Devon Mind is a local charity which supports and empowers those dealing with mental health problems through campaigning to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding of these issues. They aim to ensure all mental health patients get the support they need at the right time, to allow them to participate fully in society, free from any discrimination. Michael James, who organised the event said: “The reason I have chosen this charity to support is a simple one. If you have a broken bone, you know within time it will heal. If you feel overweight, you know you can diet. But if you have a mental health issue, you often really do not know what to do. “The work that this charity does is amazing in helping those most vulnerable in our community to firstly realise that they have an illness, and secondly help them overcome this and get them back into society to live a normal existence once again. “I would also like to praise all the instructors from so many different martial arts styles coming together and even altering their own training regimes to teach alongside each other. This is normally unheard of within the martial art fraternity, but I am so pleased that everyone has put aside any artistic differences to all teach and train together for this fantastic cause!”

However, one man has spent the past two months combining his Catholic faith with his love of sailing by setting off around Britain to form a ring of prayer around the country. Russ Fairman, who has been sailing offshore for 30 years as a hobby, is also a RYA Cruising Instructor and a mate with the Rona Sailing Project, which helps young adults and vulnerable adults to gain life skills through sailing in a team. Explaining his inspiration to complete this mission, Russ said: “I know God uses our interests. I really love the story where Jesus asks very experienced fisherman to push out again, defying all the odds, to deliver a very tangible and personal experience of God’s providence and love. “I believe God, through His Spirit, will touch many lives in a new way through this sailing mission.” However, despite Russ having plenty of experience, many of those sailing alongside him have been complete beginners, particularly those from regional celebrate weekends who have been joining him to crew the boat for a day or two each. At each of these Celebrate Weekend harbour locations, there was a ceremonial ‘Pass It On’ handover of the Celebrate Mission prayer scroll to the next crew preparing to set sail. Alan McCarthy, one of those who joined Russ to sail from Plymouth said: “Jesus’ words to Peter to ‘put out into the deep’ for a catch of fish sums up for me the Celebrate Sailing Mission. “We are asking for a renewed out-pouring of the Holy Spirit with a longing for all in our land to know the love of the Father through Jesus Our Lord. It was a privilege to praise and pray with young and old on Plymouth Barbican in fellowship and outreach.” Not only has the boat visited many regional Celebrate locations, but it has also sailed to some of the UK’s biggest cities. After leaving Southampton at the end of April, the journey took Russ to Brighton, London, Ipswich, Gathering for prayer in Plymouth

Story by Erin Downes

Russ Fairman

Grimsby, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool, Bristol and Plymouth before returning to Russ’s hometown of Southampton in mid July, having completed the entire circuit. As in many other cities visited, whilst docked in Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour in June, there was a harbourside gathering for people to get involved in intercessory prayer, praise and worship. Maria McCarthy was one of those who attended. She said: “It was a privilege to be part of the harbour gathering in Plymouth where we praised our Lord in unity. Sailing as part of the crew was a profound experience. “I looked at a familiar coastline with new eyes and a heart that asked for blessings to be poured out on our island and all its people.” Plymouth was an important stop as the host of the Celebrate South West regional weekend. The local weekend is currently in a fallow year, meaning that instead of the usual weekend conference, a range of smaller, informal gatherings have taken place. Reading the prayer message

This has included a Celebrate mass in Plymouth in May, as well as encouraging members of the dioceses to explore their faith through courses such as ‘The Gift’ CaFE course and ‘Life in the Spirit’ Seminars. The Celebrate South West weekend will return as usual next year from October 10 to 11 at Notre Dame Catholic School. As well as praying across Britain, the Sailing Mission has been supporting a worthy cause - raising money to support Joel’s Bar, the annual youth conference of Celebrate, providing Catholic Charismatic events for those between Year 12 at school and 25 years old. Over the 20 years it has been running, it has encouraged young people to sustain their faith through relationship, fellowship and inspirational teaching. The Celebrate Sailing Mission aims to help fund the work this conference does in providing a place for young people to grow and develop in their faith, with Russ hoping ‘that others will be inspired [by this experience] to use their own personal interests, skills and creativity in sharing the Gospel.’

Teepee time for Ruby

Teresa with her son Adam

A four-year-old Plympton girl called Ruby has had a fabulous tee-pee time after being chosen to have the free experience by a local firm specialising in teepee sleepovers.

Ruby has Neurofibromatosis type one and has a tough journey ahead of her, involving 18 months of chemotherapy. Claire Norman who owns Plym TeePee Parties underwent six months of chemotherapy herself at the age of 38 and struggled with the experience. She decided to give something back to the community and asked residents to suggest someone deserving of a free tee-pee sleepover experience. Ruby was chosen from the nominations received. Claire said: “I can’t even begin to imagine how little Ruby will deal with it... she is only four years old! So we gifted a teepee sleepover to Ruby after literally half of Plymouth nominated her!! Local businesses have pulled together and gifted balloons, sweets and a beauty treatment gift (for Ruby’s fab Mum).. and we even had a beautiful hand crotcheted unicorn sent from Greece! “I am truly humbled by the kindness of the people who chose to get involved with this after our article.” Beautiful Lily’s, Crazy Candy and The Perfect Package were other businesses who came on board with the gift experience. Teresa Brookshaw, who lives in Stoke, is appealing for volunteers to help beat the Guinness World Record for the most people having their head shaved at the same time. She wants to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation which grants the wishes of a lifetime for children with serious illnesses. Teresa’s 16-year-old son Adam has an extremely rare disorder called Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) which sadly took the life of his sister Sophie in 2007 when she was just five years old. MMA is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain proteins and fats (lipids) properly. The effects of MMA, which usually appear in

Infants school celebrates 154 years Staff and pupils at St Mary’s Infants School have been marking the school’s 154th anniversary with members of the community also sharing their recollections of the school over the years.

Children at the school assembled in the playground and gathered to make a figure of 154 to feature in a short promotional video to mark the milestone. Many people made online postings of their memories. Hazel Hawken was a pupil at the school in the 1980s and later went on to take up a career in teaching. She said: “I have lots of lovely memories...playing with iron filings in the science room, watching movies on a Friday in the hall, being angel Gabriel in the nativity, finding little stones in the wall and thinking they were crystals, outside toilets that were freezing and people always got locked in, ringing the bell at the end of the day out in the playground! I loved it so much, I now teach at Old Priory so see St Mary’s a lot and it is still a fabulous school.” Katherine Cole reminisced: “I loved this school, always remember when the fair came to St Mary’s Park; they would give out free rides and we could earn them in lessons.” Lesley Griffiths commented: “My daughter, Laura, who has Down’s Syndrome and cannot talk, went to St Mary’s for her first two years at school with Mrs Chinnock and Mary Ashford, her TA in the early 1990s. The children were taught a Maketon sign in assembly and I have some lovely memories of the support she received. Laura is 30 this year.” Many remembered Mrs Chinnock. On reading the posts Mrs Chinnock said: “I had the pleasure of teaching here

for many, many years and I’m so pleased that so many remembered me. It was a great place to be a part of. I loved the way the children gave their very best all the time. Going to ‘work’ was never a chore. Can anyone remember Molly, the large puppet who was often quite naughty?” Claire Harding remembered the days when the cattle market was next door and recalled looking through the holes in the fence to see the cows on market day. Many more recollections of St Mary’s Infant School can be read on the videos section of the Plympton Podcast Facebook page. St Mary’s pupils mark the anniversary with a human figure 154

Teaching ‘Oscar’ for Hele’s head of drama

Sam Jones pictured with Hele’s principal Justine Mason and students

Sam Jones, head of drama at Hele’s School, has won a prestigious national award in what is regarded as the ‘Teaching Oscars’.

Sam is one of just 11 silver winners nationally in the category for ‘Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School’ in the 21st Pearson National Teaching Awards. School principal Justine Mason recently held a special assembly to present the trophy to Sam and to celebrate what she described as ‘his fabulousness!’ As well as a trophy, Sam and a guest were invited for a special afternoon tea at the House of Commons in London in July. Sam will also be accommodated in London overnight on October 20, and attend a special dinner with other silver winners across all categories of the

awards along with some high-profile celebrities. Then he will be whisked off for a huge formal celebration, where the overall UK winners for each category will be announced and presented with the gold awards. This ceremony will be filmed and televised on BBC2 on October 27 in a programme called ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes.’ The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers. The awards were founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach – many of whom go on to train as teachers themselves thanks to the significant impact their teachers have had on them. Justine Mason, principal of Hele’s School, said: “Sam Jones is an exceptional teacher, a tremendous ambassador for the arts and a passionate advocate for young people. There

is no glass ceiling for Sam or the children he teaches, and we have been amazed to see so many children who had never previously performed take to the stage and excel with his support and encouragement. “He has a talent for unlocking potential and in turn building self-esteem, confidence, resilience and achievement, no matter whether students are disadvantaged, have special educational needs, are disaffected, are seasoned performers…everyone is respected, included, and developed to be the best they can be “His passion for drama, his dedication to inspiring young people to be creative, energetic and innovative individuals through exceptional curricular and extra-curricular provision in drama, his thirst for excellence, along with his unwavering and relentless focus on improving GCSE and A-Level outcomes, is a joy to behold.” He has turned drama into one of the most

successful and most talked about departments at Hele’s School and has gained notoriety locally through his directorship of amazing whole school productions, including Sweeney Todd and Les Misйrables, as well as through his support of dama colleagues across Plymouth through sharing his expertise and leading staff training in his role as a Plymouth Leader of Education. “His Hele’s family wish him the best of luck for the Gold Award ‘Teacher Oscars’ ceremony in October, but in the eyes of all of us at our school, Sam Jones is most definitely our Teacher of the Year!” Sam said: “ I am over the moon and feel very lucky to work with such wonderful humans.” A spokesperson for nearby Yealmpstone Farm Primary School added: “Congratulations from YFPS. If your production of ‘Les Mis’ was anything to go by, it’s absolutely clear why you’ve won this prestigious award. Good luck in the finals!” (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

Councillor’s Corner with Rebecca Smith I’m writing this slightly later in the month than I usually manage which means I can mention the amazing weekend of sport we had in the middle of July! Don’t know about you but Sunday afternoon with the British Grand Prix, the Wimbledon Final and then the Cricket World Cup Final is about as good as it gets! Hope you all enjoyed it!

A couple highlights of the last few weeks... I popped along to the launch of the lovely new cafe in Hooe, Lulu and Dolly’s Micro-Bakery & Chocolaterie - a welcome addition to Hooe Village. With highly skilled baker and chef Kim, creating a wide range of pastry, bread and baked goods, there’s something for everyone. And it’s all delicious! Recently, I joined the board of the Plymouth Drake Foundation - the city charity which runs a charity shop on Radford Park Road. This is a Council appointment so I’m there as a representative of the whole Council. I’m really excited as they exist to provide funding opportunities to small charities across the city, particularly working with children in poverty and their families. The charity shop is fast gaining a reputation for holding some high quality stock, so do check it out next time you’re in the area (other local charity shops also supported!) Finally, a rather ironic addition to the landscape in both Foxwood Gardens and Pleasure Hill Close has been a grit bin. Obviously more suited to winter weather, I had two independent requests to install the bins in these two hilly locations. They should’ve arrived back in the winter but some internal issues meant they’ve only just been installed. However, the weather this winter would have meant they’d been unused anyway and I get a funny summer story from them - so all’s well that ends well! All this in combination with the usual casework about potholes, road safety and parking. It’s been a busy but enjoyable few weeks! As ever, I’m on rebecca.smith@ plymouth.gov.uk and you can reach me on Facebook too facebook.com/ CllrRebeccaSmith. Enjoy the Summer Holiday!

Masterplan for Plymouth railway station unveiled Artist’s impression of the new multi storey car park and the refurbished Intercity Place in the background

Plymouth’s rail commuters are getting the big picture of the city’s exciting plans to create a better welcome for rail passengers.

A masterplan gives a bird’s eye view of what buildings could be going up, what’s coming down and how this vital entrance to Plymouth could look in the future. Key partners in the city are working together to create a whole new feel to this important gateway for people arriving into the city by rail – from Cornwall as well as Devon and beyond. The University of Plymouth recently showcased by way of a public consultation, its exciting ambition to transform the tower above the station into Intercity Place. This will house inter-professional clinical skills and nursing/midwifery facilities as well as additional educational services to support the future health workforce. Subject to planning permission being granted, it will signal the first major work to rejuvenate the station and its surrounds as the anchor investor. An aerial impression of how the railway station development will look

Now commuters can see more detail of what’s in store as the regeneration scheme moves off architects’ drawing boards and into the planning system. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “This is a massive regeneration scheme involving key organisations in Plymouth all committed to creating a real sense of arrival – a wow – when people come here by train. “It’s a hugely complicated scheme with lots of different elements. The university’s vision for the tower means we have an anchor tenant but we now want to know the initial thoughts of those who use the station the most.” The masterplan would become the guiding document for decisions being taken around this location. Plans currently include demolishing the redundant rail incident safety centre (RISC building) on the east side of the station to enable a new multi-storey car park to be built. The existing car park opposite the entrance is also earmarked for demolition and a new hotel and second university building created in its place. The masterplan proposes a new car park, almost

doubling the capacity to 469 spaces, for the site of the RISC building. Station staff accommodation will be modernised and significant new public space created including a direct pedestrian link to North Cross and the city centre. University of Plymouth Vice-Chancellor Professor Judith Petts CBE said; “This forms an important part of the University’s ambitious estate plans which will transform the campus and reimagine university teaching and research spaces for the 21st century. The station scheme is an important part of these plans and will significantly improve this notable city landmark so that it becomes an exciting gateway into Plymouth. “As a new home for allied health professions and nursing/midwifery, this builds on our already strong health credentials by making a significant investment in educating tomorrow’s health professionals for the region and beyond.” GWR Plymouth station manager Sara Rogers said: “There are almost 2.5 million passenger journeys through Plymouth every year, and it is easy to see why the station is regarded as the gateway to the South West. New Intercity Express Trains, providing almost 25 per cent more seats on every train than the ones they have replaced are already in service, and from December this year we will see more frequent and faster journeys. In keeping with improved services, I am delighted rail users will now have the opportunity to see these upgrade plans and the next phase in the station’s development.” The entire scheme is expected to cost in the region of £80m and has already received some financial support. Through the One Public Estate, the Cabinet Office has provided £500,000 for feasibility and planning work. • Plymouth’s train travellers will be walking out of the station onto Brunel Plaza. The multi-million regeneration scheme proposed for the area around the station will be named after Isambard Kingdom Brunelt, he great engineer, who was not only the chief engineer for the Great Western Railway, but also built the iconic Albert Bridge over the Tamar and Plymouth’s Millbay Docks. To read more visit http://plymouthnewsroom. co.uk/masterplan-plymouth-railway-stationunveiled. The consultation on the proposed masterplan closes on July 21.

Following consultation with venues, promoters and musicians involved in the local music industry, the council has teamed up with the Music Venue Trust to discuss and identify the problems faced in Plymouth and how to tackle them to support a thriving local music scene. Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: “We listened to the concerns that were raised about the local music scene, and we’re taking action. I’m thrilled to be announcing our partnership with the Music Venue Trust who have worked all across the country. The problem faced by live music venues is not just a local one – so it’s great to be working with an organisation that has expertise and a great track record of reviving grassroots music scenes. “Together we will be working to grow and develop this important aspect of Britain’s Ocean City’s vibrant cultural scene.” The Music Venue Trust will be engaging with music venues across the city to understand the local music scene and identify steps to support the industry. This will be followed by a two week celebration event in September, Fightback Plymouth, which will celebrate the local artists and venues that exist in the city. Mark Davyd, CEO of the Music Venue Trust said: “We are excited to be working with Plymouth City Council and the city’s fantastic range of grassroots music venues. There is a Mark Davyd thriving, organic music scene here which has real potential to be regionally and nationally important. This is an opportunity to work right across that scene to identify the value of what already exists, seek opportunities to support it, and look for opportunities to plug the gaps that might prevent the scene reaching its full potential.” The Music Venue Trust works nationally to protect, secure and improve grassroots music venues. Created in January 2014 the charity has been working at a national level, feeding into Government research about the music industry and working to secure the long-term future of iconic music venues across the UK. As part of this work Music Venue Trust has delivered successful Fightback events in Bristol, Brighton and Manchester.

Plympton’s new Stannator and Youth Ambassador take up their roles Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Terri Beer presents a scroll to outgoing Youth Ambassador Molly Disney watched by outgoing Stannator Natalie Harrison

Students from Plympton and Ivybridge are among those who have had their work showcased in an exhibition as part of a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design they have been studying at the Plymouth College of Art. Seventeen-year-old Plympton illustrator and graphic designer Sarah Wise de Jong, created a series of prints in primary colours to celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus. Sarah said: “I am influenced by modern graphic design and illustration, as well as movements like the Bauhaus and de Stijl, architecture and travel. In September I will be studying Illustration at an art university in Rotterdam, where I hope to develop myself as an artist and make international connections for my future career.” Every year, graduating further education students aged 16 to 19, studying creative A-Level equivalent qualifications at Plymouth College of Art, transform their dedicated Palace Court campus into a dynamic summer exhibition for industry professionals and members of the public to explore and preview the new wave of young innovators, activists and disruptors. Another 17-year-old whose work featured is designer Ellie Woodman from Ivybridge. She created a range of merchandise in pastel colours with cute motifs from the 1980s and 1990s. The motifs were inspired by childhood nostalgia and Japanese street styles.

Creative youngsters wanted for project Plymouth’s Playwriter’s Organisation is launching a new project for creative youngsters aged between 16 and 20.

16-20 will start in September and run for 400 days until November 2020. Organised and run by the Playwriters Organisation the project is free, and is open to all young people aged between 16 and 20 plus who are interested in any or all of the following: creative writing, play-writing, theatrical production, performance and story-telling, film and screen-work. No qualifications are necessary. The committment is just to do the work on-line and then have it appraised in tutorials weekly. These will be held on Friday mornings or Sunday afternoons, so the project is suitable for all whether working, not working, or in fulltime education. During the lifetime of the project the participants will create various pieces of work which will then be published or performed. Mike Ford of the Playwriters Organisation said: “The creative skills and teamwork abilities acquired by the students, as well as the social skills, will be transferable into any workplace or further study they wish to do afterwards.” The Playwriters are collaborating with Roughwood Associates and film-maker Ryan John on the project, and will publish an anthology of the students’ work, staging a production and making a film, all in 2020. Students wishing to participate should apply by either calling into The Playwriters’ Friday morning sessions at the Noah’s Ark pub in Courtney St, any Friday in August, or phone Mike Ford on 01752 786777 with their contact details.

The annual ‘change of guard’ of Stannator of Plympton has taken place with Fiona Smith being sworn in as Plympton’s 40th modern day Stannator, taking over the role from Natalie Harrison. Mrs Smith was sworn into office in a ceremony staged at Harewood House in June presided over by Deputy Lord Mayor and Plympton Erle Councillor Terri Beer. Also in attendance were the Deputy Lord Mayor’s consort, Colin Beer, Sir Gary and Lady Streeter, the outgoing and many past Stannators as well as the outgoing and incoming Youth Ambassadors and representatives of numerous community groups across Plympton. The new Stannator announced that her two chosen charities for the year would be SSAFA and Moving on Stroke Association Plympton. Stannator Smith went on to stun those in the room by announcing that, subject to being declared medically fit, she intends to do a wing-walk as part of her fundraising efforts for the year ahead and if she isn’t fit enough for that then she will try a zip wire ride instead. In addition to this she plans to stage two quiz nights and have a week running the Harewood House Coffee bar. She also drew some amusement by wearing what she said at first she thought was a hat given to her by a friend, only to later learn it was really a basket so it would not be donning her head on future occasions during her year in office. Mrs Smith’s first public engagement was on the day after her investiture when she attended the Hidden Gardens afternoon in Plympton St Maurice. Outgoing Stannator, Natalie

Fiona Smith, Plympton’s new Stannator pictured at the ceremony, watched by the new Youth Ambassador Charlotte Bryant

Harrison, said she had attended over 70 official engagements during her year in office and announced that she had raised a sum of £2020 for her chosen charity of HomeStart. She commented on some of the events she had attended in her capacity as Stannator, including lighting a beacon on Dorsmouth Rock to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1, attending the Lord Mayor’s Choosing Ceremony and seeing Plympton’s Terri Beer being installed as Deputy Lord Mayor and being invited to the Tenebrae Service at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Larkham Lane on Good Friday which she said ‘is something very different to a lot of services.’ Another highlight for Mrs Harrison during her year in office was being part of the

Remembrance Sunday march and service at Plympton St Maurice Church in November. She commented on her pride in being able to wear her grandfather’s medals and that her cousin had only just managed to get them to her in time for the event. Another, now customary part of the Stannator change over night, is the investiture of a new Youth Ambassador for Plympton. For the past year the role has been carried out by Hele’s deputy head girl Molly Disney. Molly told those attending the ceremony that the role has shown her how easy it is to make a difference. Molly explained to the assembled audience how she was previously ‘quite shy and reserved’ but she put herself forward for the role because she

had decided the time had come to ‘get out there’ and advance the causes she was interested in. Among those causes was mental health and wellbeing and the handling of rubbish. On mental health Molly has been instrumental in seeking the views of her peers as to shortfalls in youth mental health provision and has had meetings with those involved in Plympton’s planned Wellbeing Hub to try and address that gap. She has also achieved results at Hele’s School in reducing single use plastics. After discussions with key individuals such as dinner ladies and the school’s head of finance, results were quickly seen. Molly said: “We managed over time to get rid of all single use plastics within our canteen.” The teenager was keen to recommend the role of Youth Ambassador to other aspiring hopefuls in future years. She told those present at her handover ceremony: “Being Youth Ambassador has shown me it’s so easy to make a difference. This role has enabled me to flourish as a Youth Ambassador and has taught me how to balance my academic life with the community side of life. It has prepared me for the future and I would recommend this opportunity to any young person.” At the end of her speech Molly was given a scroll by Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Terri Beer as a memento of her year in office. Molly’s successor as Youth Ambassador is 14-year-old Charlotte Bryant who is a student at Plympton Academy. After reading out her promise as Youth Ambassador at the Harewood House ceremony Charlotte announced that she plans to raise awareness of dementia and get young people interacting more with the aged residents the area. Weather kept Lamb Feast organisers on their toes

The sun shone and the crowds turned out in force for the Lamb Feast

The organisers of this year’s Lamb Feast at Castle Green in Plympton were kept on tenterhooks by the weather which threatened to cause its cancellation right up until the day before.

The poor weather with heavy rainfall in the days beforehand thankfully passed by the morning of the event on June 15 enabling it to proceed as planned. In what seemed an unlikely scenario only days before, the feast went ahead in an afternoon of glorious sunshine. Locals and visitors rewarded the organisers’ efforts by turning out in large number for the afternoon which had its usual ingredients including singing, dancing, a dog show, a judo display, bouncy slide, classic cars as well as charity and group stalls to name just some of the attractions. Charmian Evans was the MC for the afternoon, introducing the various activities as they took place and interviewing some of those who were actively involved. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Pocast)

Plympton Academy students take part in Challenge Week Students at Plympton Academy watched as their school was transformed into Hogwarts for their annual Challenge Week recently.

Eighty students in Years 7, 8 and 9, enjoyed a week of Harry Potter activities that started with the Sorting Hat Ceremony. Once placed within their House, students enjoyed classes such as: potions making; designing a house crest; creating their own magical wands from Ollivander’s; hunting for Horcruxes; duelling in their Defense Against the Dark Arts Class and a life sized game of Giants, Wizards and Trolls. Challenge Week is designed to give students a wide range of extra-curricular experiences and each activity was defined to incorporate curriculum skills from creative and visual arts, performing arts, literacy and personal and social education. Head of English at Plympton Academy, Claire Jones explained that students worked as part of a team throughout the week, developing their social skills and approach to creative tasks. ”It’s been lovely to see them stepping outside their comfort zones and developing new skills alongside enjoying some Harry Potter magic,” she said. The highlight of the week was the trip to The Making of Harry Potter: Warner Bros Studios, just outside London, where students experienced the real life magic of the wizarding world, from riding on broomsticks to seeing the dragon in Gringott’s bank roar to life.

Above: Plympton Academy Head of English, Claire Jones, sorting Year 9 student, Charlie Roberts, into his House for Harry Potter Challenge Week. Right: English teacher, Laura Wills, ready to place students into their wizarding house

Year 7 student Rowan Hutchins said: “The trip to the Studios was absolutely amazing and I also loved using our own wands to complete magic duels outside!” The Harry Potter week was so successful that there’s already plans to create more

wizarding opportunities next year. “We absolutely loved dressing up and being in character as Hogwarts Professors for the week and seeing our students immersed in their activities was wonderful,” said Claire Jones.

Modern day fascination with Ancient Egypt Plymouth & District Egyptology Society (PADES) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019.

The small, friendly and welcoming group who share an interest in all aspects of Ancient Egypt has enjoyed a growing membership over the years, with visitors from Devon, Cornwall, Avon and Somerset. The group normally meet on the first Saturday of each month from September of one year to May of the next. Members can enjoy reduced fees for lectures, and where possible, visits are arranged both within the UK and to other European Countries where there are Egyptology Museum Exhibitions. PADES meet for Saturday afternoon lectures and Study Days in the Quaker House, 74 Mutley Plain, Plymouth. The Society is well-established and respected amongst the academic community, and has hosted lectures from many of the UK’s leading Egyptologists and Archaeologists, some currently excavating in Egypt. One of the Society’s aims is to offer help towards preservation and conservation of what remains of the Ancient Egyptian civilization. To that end it has made offered donations to the Tell Edfu Excavation, The Griffith Institute and the Oxford Expedition to Egypt. Visitors and guests of all ages are welcome to attend all lectures and study days. Those who have little or no knowledge of Ancient Egypt are welcome, as are those who have studied Egyptology for many years as PADES aims to cater for all levels of knowledge and experience. Anyone interested in knowing more should contact the chairman, Janis Naylor: janis. naylor@aol.co.uk for further information, or pop along to a lecture. Visitors may want to delve deeper into not only the land of Pyramids, Pharaohs, Temples, Tombs and Treasures, but also hear about the everyday life of the Ancient Egyptian family thousands of years ago.

Container shipment of vital humanitarian aid leaves for Greece A 40-foot container shipment of humanitarian aid has left Saltash carrying hundreds of pairs of children’s wellington boots, clothing and teddy bears.

The container of humanitarian aid started its two-week journey to Attika Human Support in Lesvos Greece at the end of June. It was the eighth container of aid to leave the QStore Business Centre in Saltash organised by Plymouthbased Open Hearts Open Borders (OHOB) Refugee Aid. The OHOB summer container was loaded with around 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid items including 35 boxes containing hundreds of pairs of new wellington boots, 1500 bottles of shower gel, dozens of nappies, wet wipes and toiletries, clothing, tinned and dried food, buggies and pushchairs, towels, blankets, sleeping bags, and also included donated computers from Marjon University for the Better Days Education Project and 12 boxes of teddy bears donated by the Teddies Trust. Over the last six months volunteers and

refugee aid groups and charities from across Devon and Cornwall have collected and sorted through thousands of donated items of clothing, food, toiletries and baby items for this shipment to Greece. Founder and co-ordinator of OHOB Faraday Fearnside said: “We work very closely with other refugee aid groups and our partners in Greece make the container shipments happen twice a year. In the run up to the shipments I am in contact, on a weekly basis, with Attika Human Support, this ensures we collect and sort aid that is required because needs can change.” As well as the refugee groups and charities collecting for this shipment, donations have also come from the community, not only in the South West but as far as Norfolk, Reading and East London. Faraday said: “It’s amazing how the community pulls together for each shipment; we are always blown away by the generosity of the South West. So much aid is given when so many people are experiencing their own difficulties.

Photo Credits: Naomi Roesner Volunteers busy loading the container

“Each time we ship aid it reaffirms to me that there is goodness in this world despite so much bad news and political backlash. I really do hope that one day we won’t need to ship aid anymore, but until that day arrives OHOB will keep collecting, sorting and shipping.” The second 40ft shipment of the year will leave Saltash in December and will provide winter aid items to support those in the camps during the colder months. The container will be filled with winter items, including several hundred tents and sleeping bags salvaged from festivals across the UK.

The next van to go to Mobile Refugee Support in France leaves on Friday 5th July and will be filled with tents and sleeping bags, mobiles phones and batteries and food. OHOB and their South West partners also support a number of local homeless and charitable projects across the South West and support with household and essential items and provide household and essential items for resettlement. News and updates are published on a regular basis on the website www.ohob.org. uk and its Facebook page OHOB Open Hearts Open Borders Refugee Aid.

Piggy Pilates Session for 2, breakfast & piggy cuddles! A Piggy Pilates session for 2 with breakfast and piggy cuddles (Sunday 8 September at 9am). Four runner up prizes of family tickets to Pennywell Farm Everyone knows that Pennywell Farm, near Buckfastleigh is a great day out for all the family. What you may not know that it is also the home of Piggy Pilates . . . it’s true, fitness can be fun! Exercising with animals has become a bit of a thing in recent years with things like Goat Yoga and Alpaca Walking. Piggy Pilates is already proving to be every bit as popular. Combining a stunning Devon countryside location, animals and exercise, the classes are already attracting a lot of interest and with Pennywell miniature pigs joining in, what’s not to love? Pilates teacher, Harriet Parkes leads the Pilates sessions which are followed by a continental breakfast and the promise of piggy cuddles with the Pennywell piglets. Harriet explains, “While there is plenty of fun to be had, Pilates has many benefits including improving posture, movement quality, mobility, flexibility, mental cognition and core strength”.

Pilates was invented by German-born Joseph Pilates who believed that mental and physical health were closely connected. He designed his exercises to make the maximum use of your time by targeting the deep postural muscles of the body, building strength from the inside out and rebalancing your muscles. It is suitable for all ages and abilities and Harry’s classes are designed to be relaxed, nonintimidating and welcoming to all.

To win simply answer the question below:

Q: Who invented Pilates? ✁

The advantages of interaction with animals of any kind are widely known and touching animals releases many hormones such as phenyl ethylamine, the magic hormone which has the same pleasurable effect on the brain as chocolate. The pigs are free to roam around the participants as they take their class and with pigs being curious by nature, can get very interesting. Pennywell’s owner Chris Murray says, “Exercise is an important part of life so should never be dull. You can have a real giggle and still have a good workout. Everyone should exercise with a smile on their face and with miniature pigs running around, it’s impossible not to smile.”

Please send your completed entry coupon to Pennywell Farm, Plymouth Chronicle, 28 Old Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth, PL3 4PY by the closing date of 29th August 2019. Why it’s important to be an encourager THE

By Dave Simpson, Station Manager of Cross Rhythms Plymouth

Experience

Encouragement is one of the most valuable, and often most underestimated aspects of human life. We have all at one time or another felt it’s effects and yet it is something which can be hard to give out and to most of us it really does not come naturally. I have no idea why but giving out encouragement and positive affirmation to another person can often feel slightly awkward and is something we can tend to avoid. Yet we will all have positive thoughts and feelings for people, the reasons why they are our friends and why we like spending time with them are two such examples. But what good is it just keeping those things to ourselves? Encouragement can be related to who we are as people but also can relate to things that we do or want to get involved in. In my experience it has often been encouragement that has helped me to step out into opportunities that my own fear, doubt and insecurities may have held me back from. One big example of this is presenting radio shows on Cross Rhythms Plymouth. Anyone who knew me growing up would know that

public speaking, presenting and being on stage was much more of my brothers’ domain and something that I shied away from. Yet I was given the opportunity to be involved in the radio station and to present on air and it was encouraging words from friends and colleagues that helped me to step out of my comfort zone. Encouragement has continued to build my confidence in something that I know wasn’t completely natural to me! As well as knowing what it feels like to receive encouragement we all know, often all too well, what it is like not to receive it and to have self-doubt creep in to our minds about our value and worth. Without Dave Simpson encouragement we can also lose confidence in the things we do and it can become all too easy to give up. An ancient proverb in the bible says that ‘the tongue has the power of life and death’. In other words with the things we say we can either build people up or tear them down.

We live in a society which is quick to tear down and discourage. The media is mostly critical of people in authority and anyone who is in the public eye. A large part of this is vital as it keeps politicians and public figures accountable but how often is it balanced with encouraging comment on those who use their authority effectively and for the common good? It can seem quite rare. This culture of criticism and discouragement can rub off on us and if we’re honest it is often much easier to speak negatively about someone than positively. A close friend of mine recently said something that challenged me deeply about giving out words of encouragement. He told me that he would rarely tell people he loved what he really thought of them and was known in his family for giving out very short birthday and Christmas cards with little more content than signing his name. However when one of his family was diagnosed with a terminal illness he realized every opportunity he had

to tell people he loved them and to encourage them was precious and he didn’t know how many more chances he would get. He told me how he now regularly texts friends and family with an encouraging word and if he thinks it, he tells them. I was very blessed to grow up with two very supportive parents who would often encourage me in who I was as a child and also in terms of things I did and wanted to get involved in. This helped to form in me a positive sense of my own value and identity but I know for many people this wasn’t their experience and for some of you reading this your upbringing may well have been quite the opposite. This need not leave you feeling left out and without hope though as the biggest encourager that any of us can know is the perfect parent for all of us, that is God. No one knows us better than the one who created us and it has been my experience that knowing God’s love and affirmation personally is stronger than anything we can receive from another person.

Mayflower 400 year to bring Plymouth a brand new town crier Thirteen contestants will line up on the evening of July 25 at Plymouth Guildhall to compete for the position as Plymouth’s Mayflower 400 Town Crier, dedicated to raising awareness of the Mayflower 400 year long programme of events and activities that will mark the 400 year anniversary of this historic voyage to America.

A panel of six judges including Judi Spiers and Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Richard Ball will pick the winner in the style of Britain’s Got Talent and members of the public are invited to come along and join in the vote on the evening to help pick the best crier. The Town Crier Competition, brought to life by three residents from The Hoe and funded by the Mayflower 400 Community Sparks cultural programme, starts at 7pm with entry being free. Plymouth Morris Dancers will entertain the audience outside the Guildhall from 6pm before the competition begins. The entrants have been put through their paces in readiness for the evening by mentors, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge town criers Les Ellis and Roger Pinder. Les will also act as Master of ceremonies for the evening. The winner will have no time to rest on their laurels as they will jump straight into the International Town Crier competition in Devon on Friday 26, Saturday 27, and Sunday 28 July.

Sky’s eye-catching design shortlisted

An up-and-coming artist from Plymouth College of Art has been named as a finalist in a UK-wide art and design competition run by National Express.

Sky Griffiths is up against seven other finalists to win the chance of seeing her work come to life across the side of an iconic 14-metre-long National Express coach which will transport passengers around the country for an entire year. Nineteen-year-old Sky said she was delighted to have been shortlisted in this competition by the UK’s largest coach operator: “I travel by coach to my home city of Bristol all the time so the possibility of seeing my work on one is very exciting.” Artists were given free rein to showcase their individual styles in their entries, which were then whittled down to a final eight. Speaking of her design, Sky said: “I love the combination of ocean blues, greens and the members may well be in their latter years, but have fabulous personalities and lots to share. purples and thought this colour scheme would look striking on a National Express coach. I had planned for the entire design to be patterned fish scales, but the design naturally developed into a school of fish. I liked the idea of seeing them travel in the direction of the coach, journeying along with its passengers.” Sky is currently in her second year at Plymouth College of Art and has high hopes of breaking into the world of animation: “I’d say I have a fairly cartoony style. I use strong shapes and lines in my work and would like to focus on designing characters for animations in the future.” Along with the main prize, the artist with the most votes will also receive a free 12-month coach pass, £500, two tickets to Hampshire’s Boomtown Fair in August and a one-to-one development day with an established artist resulting in their work being showcased at the High Vis Festival in Birmingham in September. Plymouth Library Service is calling for children to sign up to read six books this summer for the Summer Reading Challenge 2019.

The theme this year is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Every child who signs up to read six books over the summer holiday will get a collectable mission folder to keep a record of their challenge journey – and if they complete it they will be presented with a medal at their library and a certificate during their school assembly.

Children can choose any books they like – novels, fact books, joke books, eBooks and audiobooks all count, just as long as they are borrowed from the library. It’s free to sign up and there are stickers and prizes to collect along the way.

The challenge is aimed at four to 11 year olds and there’s a mini-challenge for the under fours.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said “The Summer Reading Challenge is a

College students celebrate success Community work, volunteering and overcoming adversity were just some of the many achievements celebrated at City College Plymouth’s recent Student of the Year awards.

The annual ceremony recognises students who have really gone above and beyond making a positive contribution to the college or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve highly in their studies. The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating lecturers as well as local employers who presented five special awards. They all enjoyed a delicious three-course meal prepared by the college’s hospitality and catering students before receiving their certificates and prizes. Ben Manning, deputy principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Year awards ceremony is an important event for the college and a great way to round off our academic year. It provides us with an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, have all achieved fantastic results and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the college are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the city. “It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and tutors.” Award Winners - College Awards Max Lavis, 20, from Stoke Apprentice of the Year Max left school at 16 and with his employer, student accommodation company Tern Quay, he has progressed with his painting and decorating qualifications from a traineeship to an Apprenticeship. He has demonstrated his ability to learn and has quickly gained valuable skills and experience, and is now taking the lead on various projects in his workplace. Max has consistently exceeded his employer’s expectations. Max said: “I’ve worked hard to succeed, and the support I’ve had from both the college and my employer during my Apprenticeship has helped me to push through all of the challenges I’ve faced. My time at City College has taught me perseverance and leadership skills, and I am proud to now be supervising and supporting a new apprentice in my workplace.” Lewis Matti, 21, from St Budeaux Endeavour Award Lewis is a student who has faced numerous personal challenges, but is ready to face whatever life throws at him. Not only is Lewis highly motivated to succeed, but he is described by his lecturers as “an incredibly

kind, thoughtful student” who always goes above and beyond expectations. Lewis said: “I’ve benefited from taking part in a variety of work placements during my Independence and Life Skills course and also been supported to swim for the Special Olympics and to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award. I love the college and with my increased confidence have enjoyed being a student representative, passing information between staff and my fellow students.” Employer sponsored awards Bracken Mitchell, 18, from Stoke Community Engagement Award, sponsored by the Real Ideas Organisation Bracken is a Health and Social Care student who works hard, supports her peers and takes up every opportunity to gain valuable work experience and help others. Whilst this can be expected from someone hoping to start a career in the care industry, Bracken’s nominating lecturer highlighted that she is someone who stands out from the rest for going the extra mile. Jenny Bishop from the Real Ideas Organisation, said: “We chose Bracken as the winner for this year’s Community Engagement Award for her participation in work experience opportunities across a number of community settings during her course, but also her active involvement as one of the college’s Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, Bracken regularly delivers tours to potential students and their families, and talks to new and potential students about the

college. I love the fact that Bracken lives for the college brand and is really integrated into the college community.”

Tom Smith, 18, from St Budeaux High Achiever of the Year Award, sponsored by Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Tom juggles his full-time course in Sport with a judo career that has suffered numerous knockbacks due to repeated injury, which has put his selection for Great Britain in jeopardy. Helen Hart from the Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce said: “We chose Tom as the winner for this year’s High Achiever of the Year Award due to his positive ‘can do’ attitude and perseverance in order to succeed. We were really impressed that Tom was able to achieve distinction grades, whilst suffering with a learning disability, and competing at such a high level for his judo.” Rebecca Mercer, 44, from Crabtree Student Voice Award, sponsored by Livewell Southwest Rebecca (Bex), is a real ambassador for others. Alongside her Access to Higher Education course, where Bex is working towards becoming a Social Worker, Bex is a support worker and advocate for ‘Not Alone’ which is a support group that she runs for transgender and non-binary people in Plymouth. She is influential and inspirational to other students when it comes to matters of equality and diversity, and we can fully appreciate why she has been nominated for a national equality and diversity award. “Livewell Southwest as an organisation is a great advocate for promoting and encouraging equality and diversity, we really wish to applaud Bex. We were delighted to select her for the Student Voice Award.” Hannah Buckingham, 18, from Turnchapel Employability Award, sponsored by RedRok Hannah is a Live Events student who was praised for her high organisation skills, effective communication and turning ideas into reality whilst also managing expectations. Hannah said: “From meeting crew members at gigs, to working on the Illuminate light festival at the Royal William Yard and in the Drum Theatre at The Theatre Royal Plymouth, as well as numerous college performances as Stage or Production Manager, there have been so many opportunities for me to gain work experience during my time at City College. It’s lovely to have been commended for both my professionalism and determination to succeed.”
