Sherford Life When I first moved to Plymouth it felt like being on holiday all the time! In fact, when my family and I moved back to Plymouth after three years away we arrived at the beginning of six weeks of solid sunshine – which was a wonderful ‘welcome home’ present!
One of the great things about living where we do is the fact that we can get so easily to the beautiful countryside of Dartmoor on one side and the lovely beaches of the South Devon coast on the other side. We’re on the doorstep of Cornwall, we’re surrounded by family attractions like Pennywell Farm (a big hit with our family) and National Trust places to explore. And if we don’t want to leave Plymouth By Revd Tom Brassil itself we still have the Hoe, the shops, the cinema, great places to eat, plenty of sports facilities, you name it. Plymouth is definitely the kind of place where you can have a great ‘staycation!’ In my own locale of Sherford we are looking forward to the building of our Leisure Centre. Meanwhile we are enjoying our growing Country Park, as well as the nearby King George V Playing Fields. Another of the great things about our city and its various neighbourhoods is the way there is so much going on within our communities to help us enjoy life. Flick to page 4 of this newspaper and have a look at the Out and About pages: I’m sure there will be something there to inspire you. So what will you do with your time off? Will you go hunting for Elmer the Elephant around Plymouth? Will you enjoy the beauty of the natural world on our doorstep? Will you enjoy getting together with friends and family to relax? Or simply get lost in a good book? How will you make sure you rest? I’ll tell you why it’s an important question to answer: because we were designed to rest as well as work! The people who followed God in the earliest days of the Bible were told to take at least one day of rest each week, called the Sabbath. In one verse in the Bible the reason is given: God made everything. In other words, the world won’t fall apart if we take a break – God’s got that covered! Elsewhere in the Bible another reason is given too: God is the one who rescues. In other words, we can’t save ourselves through working hard – only God can do that. And he has that covered too! We weren’t meant to be self-sufficient work machines, who must keep going in order to keep the world going. We were meant to work and rest, to create and enjoy. And we can rely on God to keep working even when we take a break. So, what will you do with your time off? If you have any questions about Sherford Life, or if you would like to chat more about how God created rest for our good, please contact me at tom@ sherfordchurch.net

Sherford 2019: Progress on new community includes 2.3 million bricks, 255,000 trees and plants and more than 200 trainees New figures have revealed the major progress being made in the construction of Sherford, one of the South West’s largest new community developments. Since house construction began in 2016, in excess of 150 residents live in the vibrant and growing community, and the first primary school is bustling with over 90 pupils. Emma Colin of the Sherford Consortium – the partnership of homebuilders responsible for the new community, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey – said: “A tremendous amount of work, investment and manpower has gone into bringing the vision of Sherford to life. It is hugely rewarding to see how Sherford is evolving into such an incredible community. “So much has been achieved already, despite only being in its first phase of development. With many more milestones in the pipeline in the next year alone, we look forward to this community going from strength to strength.” Devon County Council Leader John Hart said: “An impressive amount of work is going into the development of the new community of Sherford and it really is progressing well. Aside from the development of homes and infrastructure, we’ve also seen the opening of some vital community facilities such as the primary school, the skills training centre and the first part of the country park, and the main road linking Sherford to Deep Lane Junction is also currently being built.” Cllr Dan Brown, Ward Member for Wembury and Brixton said: “I simply want to say wow. Every time I drive into Sherford I am amazed at the progress. New homes are being occupied all the time and the community is really starting to grow. It is such an honour to be part of the birth of this fledgling community and I am really looking forward to celebrating future milestones with the residents.” Key milestones in numbers: • Since house construction started in 2016, more than 2.3 million bricks have been used at Sherford, 2,000 doors and windows have been installed, along with over 1,000 tonnes of cement used. Forming the foundations of the new community, bricks and concrete have been used to create homes, buildings, roads and pavements throughout the town. • A huge amount of effort has also been made in creating new wildlife habitats, including designing and constructing over five miles of wildlife corridors. Forming a network of green spaces across the site, these corridors are
already being used by local deers and rabbits, ensuring they can navigate throughout the community safely. • The first primary school, Sherford Vale, opened its doors to pupils in September 2018. It now
has nearly 150 pupils, along with over 20 nursery age children in a dedicated unit. It is the first of four schools in Sherford and will eventually have an intake of 420 pupils. • Already a thriving new community, with over 150 people relocating to the town, more people are moving in on a near weekly basis. • The first part of Sherford’s 500-acre Country Park opened to the public in the summer of 2018. A footpath was recently created for residents to walk to the park from their homes. Work is also well underway in creating and expanding the next segment of the park, with extensive woodland planting taking place. • As well as becoming one of the South West’s largest new communities, Sherford is also set to be one of the most sustainable. During its construction, materials such as rocks, timber, metal and plasterboard are being recycled. 85% of waste materials are being recycled, while others are being reused to construct the town’s roads and home foundations. • 23 new roads have been created to date, along with 22 new residential streets. £8 million has been invested in the creation of Main Street, to connect Sherford to the A38. Work has already begun on the major new route and is due to be completed by Spring 2020. • A massive 255,000 plants, trees and shrubs have been planted, along with in excess of 3,000m2 of wildflower seeds sown. The community’s first grass play area opened ahead of the school summer holidays. Work has also begun to create the town’s first sports pitches, allotments and tennis courts. • Many people and businesses are playing a key role in bringing the vision of Sherford to life, with an average of over 250 workers active on site every day, as well as 15-25 machines active • Sherford is supporting the local economy, with 60 contractors involved in the town’s construction, the majority of which are local. • Sherford’s impressive main entrance features over 30,000 plants, including climbing daisies, ivies, gorse and ferns transplanted from the existing site, and will also eventually be the perfect home for birds looking to nest. • Since the opening of Sherford’s £370,000 Skills Training Centre, which aims to boost manual skills by providing training across several construction trades, more than 200 people – including apprentice, veterans and contractors – have engaged with the centre.
...and residents give Sherford the thumbs up Residents in Sherford have given a thumbs up to the development of the new community.
As the new community begins to take shape, the councils and consortium of house builders involved in the delivery of the town decided to conduct Sherford’s first community survey to better understand who is living in the town, their needs and their views on community life. Nearly 50% of residents took time to complete the survey, and the results gained will be used to forecast the community’s future needs. In a quick snapshot, this is what they said: • Sherford is a young and thriving family town • 75% of people living in Sherford moved from within a 10 miles radius - they are predominantly local people with young families who also work locally • 90% said they enjoy living in Sherford
• Of those 90%, they said that their home and their community were some of the best things about living in Sherford From the survey’s findings, residents said they were especially keen to have a play area and community meeting space, both of which are planned for Sherford. The housebuilders have listened to this feedback and a new gated and landscaped space has been created for resident families to use as a play area this summer - and it is hoped Sherford’s first playground will follow soon. The primary school, delivered by the house builders and Devon County Council, now has 148 children registered and has been successful in attracting families to Sherford. Now that the results have been shared with the community, this data will be used to work with partners who are involved in the delivery of Sherford so they have the best information from the community,
to help shape their future facilities, in line with those already agreed during the planning process. By monitoring trends as the community develops, this will provide opportunities for the community to give feedback on all aspects of life at Sherford to the developers and partners involved. Emma Colin from the Sherford Consortium, said: “Hundreds of people have already made Sherford their home and it is developing into a thriving, happy community - as the resident survey clearly shows. “At the heart of what makes Sherford such an incredible place to live is its residents, and we are delighted with their positive feedback and recognise their hopes and needs for the future. “So much more is planned for Sherford as it grows, and we are committed to making this a place people are proud of.” To find out more about Sherford, go to: www. sherford.org

Dartmoor Zoo welcomes two baby Marmosets
..and now they want members of the public to help name the new born twins
are taking to parenthood very well. The pair are working together to care for each other and their new offspring. The progression of the twin’s development has been very positive, the keepers will continue to monitor them closely. The future is looking bright for the new family here at Dartmoor Zoo. “Although common marmosets are considered a lower concern on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species, their population is sadly decreasing due to the threat to their habitat. “It is our utmost priority at Dartmoor Zoo to educate and inspire the general public about wildlife conservation and improve captive animal
management by providing a safe environment for animals under threat in the wild.” The keepers have not yet examined the babies to determine the sex in order to minimise unnecessary stress and to allow the family precious bonding time. Would you like to help Dartmoor Zoo name the baby marmosets? The keepers will shortlist two names from suggestions sent in by the public. To nominate a name or two, please email zoobase@dartmoorzoo.co.uk and mention why the names would suit the twins! Winners will be announced on Facebook. To find out more about Dartmoor Zoo visit www. dartmoorzoo.org.uk
know how important this scheme is to the people who live in the east of the city so I’m delighted that we’re in a position to move on to main section of the work. “We’ve done the enabling works and we’ve done the bits away from Plymouth Road that will complement the changes we’re making so I’m looking forward to seeing it all completed.” A major part of the scheme is an extension to the eastbound, right-turn lane at Cot Hill where the road will be widened, reducing queues at this junction. At Marsh Mills, an extra lane will be added to the entry of the roundabout for traffic accessing the A38, with upgrades to the crossing facilities and signals. Meanwhile, Coypool Road and Larkham Lane will be changed to a two lane exit, allowing more
vehicles to flow onto Plymouth Road in a shorter green light window. New crossing facilities at Woodford Avenue and Larkham Lane are also in the plans, as are upgrades to crossings at Dingle Road and Glen Road and a new cycle lane between Larkham Lane and Dingle Road. The first junction to be tackled is Marsh Mills, where lane closures will be in place for two months to allow for works for a new lane to be created and for new lights to be installed. These lane closures will be off-peak only. At the same time, new crossings will be installed at Larkham Lane. Again, a lane closure will be necessary while these works are being completed. They are expected to finish in February next year. Timings for works on the other junctions will be released as the scheme progresses.
Plymouth Road improvements set to continue
Junction improvements in Plympton and Marsh Mills will continue next month with work on Plymouth Road.
The work will mark the next stage of the Eastern Corridor Junction Improvement Scheme and follows on from work already completed at the Cot Hill and Merafield Road junction earlier in the year. Now, the focus will be on Plymouth Road itself with ageing traffic signal equipment set to be replaced with the latest technology with pavements, crossings and cycle paths improved. Crucially, the scheme will also see road capacity increased. Contractor South West Highways will begin work on September 2 and will be completed in Summer 2020. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, said: “We
Dame Hannahs is to host its annual autumn fundraising lunch with a Mayflower 400 theme. The event is taking place at Boringdon Park Golf Club on September 24.
A member of the Mayflower 400 team will be giving a fascinating illustrated presentation about the Mayflower 400 commemorations. 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth UK to Plymouth Massachusetts and a series of events are planned to commemorate the legacy of the passengers and crew who undertook the journey and to highlight their stories and heritage, which is embedded in communities across the UK, US and Netherlands. Guests will enjoy a delicious lunch at Boringdon Park Golf Club and there will also be stalls selling gifts ranging from silk scarves and art to soaps and candles. Coffee will be served from 11.30am and lunch will start at 12.30pm. Booking is essential and for tickets call 01548 550300.
Devon conservation attraction, Dartmoor Zoo, has welcomed two happy and healthy baby marmosets to its community.
The zoo is now calling on members of the public to help name the as-yet unnamed new born marmoset twins. In the wild, common marmosets face threat of habitat loss from deforestation with an estimated 80% of forests in Cerrado Region, Brazil felled since 1970. The successful breeding of two healthy marmosets is an invaluable milestone for the Devon-based family attraction. Dartmoor Zoo’s Curator Tom Lowry commented: “We are thrilled with the arrival of two healthy Common Marmosets. The species is intelligent, inquisitive and playful – and their offspring are irresistible! We’re already seeing their personalities develop and we know they’ll be very popular with visitors to Dartmoor Zoo.” Both of the baby marmosets are in perfect health, and are bonding well with first time parents, Ted and Marmalade - who take it in turns to care for the babies while the other rests. Once the Marmoset twins are more mobile, the Marmoset family will then move into a brand-new enclosure, built by the Dartmoor Zoo team and Cornwall Glass who donated and fitted all the glazing, and helped with the mesh-work. The marmosets’ new enclosure has plenty of ropes and branches for them to play and climb on. Curator Tom Lowry added: “Ted and Marmalade

Ken and Tony, the well-known and popular local musical duo, are returning once again with another vintage evening of songs from the sixties and seventies. The event will be held at 7 pm on September 14 in the Church Hall in Market Road. All funds raised will be in aid of the Devon Historic Churches Trust. Tickets are now available from Ken Kingwell on 01752 335702 or Rodger Ruse on 01752 510190 or from the Parish Office at only £5 for each adult, with children free. Anyone unable to purchase a ticket in advance will be able to pay at the door. A church spokesperson said: “We hope that all our friends in the local community and further afield will be able to come along again for a nostalgic and enjoyable evening.” The date chosen for the concert has a particular significance - it is when the next Devon Historic Churches Day is taking place. Churches all over Devon will be trying to raise funds for the Trust whose magnificent work has enabled many of the beautiful churches in the county to survive in the current harsh economic climate. St Mary’s has benefited from the Trust’s generosity on more than one occasion in recent times when urgent repairs to the structure of the church have become necessary. The church spokesperson added: “We have supported the Trust ourselves over the last seven years and, thanks to the kind efforts of Tony and Ken and the wonderful support of our many friends, we have been able to raise a considerable amount each year.” St Mary’s Church is also supporting Heritage Open Days September 14 and 15. Hundreds of various UK places of interest will be opening their doors on those days to allow members of the public to find out more about the country’s magnificent heritage. St Mary’s Church will be open from 9 am until 1 pm on Saturday and from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday. A team of volunteers will be present in the church throughout these times to provide guidance and assistance to the many visitors who they hope will be coming to admire the magnificent building. New plastics code of conduct launched A new code of conduct to help businesses, community organisations and individuals cut down on single use plastics has been launched by partners in Plymouth. The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct was launched jointly by members of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce and Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s City Conversations event. It follows the news last month that Plymouth is the largest UK city to be awarded Plastic Free City status by Surfers Against Sewage. The Code gives lots of handy hints and tips such as encouraging the use of reusable cups, making sure events are

Your local legal experts THAT SINKING FEELING…
Katie Miller is a Graduate Member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and she works in our Plymstock Office.
Online search engines are the perfect place to start when looking for your new dream home. We are all tempted by the array of photographs of wonderfully pruned gardens set against a back drop of blue skies, a fitted kitchen with ample storage space, modern units and appliances and a bathroom that entices thoughts of relaxing evenings soaking in bubbles. We imagine our favourite items of furniture placed within the tastefully decorated reception rooms and bedrooms...
However, for most of us, buying a house is the biggest financial investment we will ever make and, as such, we need to also consider the practicalities of our dream home. Your conveyancer’s job is to ensure that all appropriate searches, investigations and enquiries are carried out to assist you to make an informed decision. After all, you will want to ensure that your investment is a valuable one and that your new home will stand the test of time. As part of the conveyancing process, you will need to be reassured that any potential risk is taken into consideration – for example, risk of subsidence. Subsidence is the vertical downward movement of a building foundation caused by the loss of support of the ground beneath the foundations. The most common cause of subsidence in the UK is soil shrinkage, particularly where

there are clay soils present, although it can also be caused by a number of other factors such as in-filled quarry or mining sites. Due to the extensive level of clay found across the UK, as well as high levels of past mining activity, there is a significant risk of subsidence to a large number of properties, particularly in the South West area. The likely damage caused to a property is visible cracking to the walls, unstable foundations and ground instability which may lead to the property becoming unsafe to live in. Although damage caused by subsidence is usually covered by your buildings insurance policy, as a policyholder, you will be required to pay an excess to remedy any damage caused. The excess for subsidence is typically around £1,000, but you should ensure that care and attention is made when incepting your policy of buildings insurance as some policies will stipulate a higher excess which may be unaffordable. In addition to this, any insurance claim must be disclosed if you decide to sell the property. In turn, this may affect your ability to sell or mortgage the property, as well as having an adverse effect on its market value. We offer our buyers a search costing only £10 plus VAT which assesses whether there is any risk of subsidence or ground instability likely to adversely impact on the property they are purchasing. If the search result shows no risk, then the buyer has piece of mind that their future property will not be affected. If, however, the search reveals a potential risk, then we advise that a more extensive search is carried out to find out the overall risk and any recommended remedial action to be taken. For more information on any aspect of conveyancing please call us and we will be delighted to assist you.
eco-friendly by using recyclable materials including cups, plates and cutlery, and thinking about packaging when ordering supplies. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re really pleased to launch the new Code of Conduct jointly with Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. “As a city we’re committed to doing all we can to reduce single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution and to do this we need everyone’s support. So the Code is really about making it as easy as possible for businesses, community organisations and individuals to take part. We can all do our bit for people, Plymouth and the planet.” Stuart Elford, Devon and Plymouth Chamber’s Chief Executive, said: “Devon and Plymouth Chamber is delighted to support The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct and launch the initiative to business leaders at our City Conversations event. Protecting our natural resources is important for everyone and businesses need to play their part. This code will help organisations to do their bit with handy hints and tips. The Chamber will encourage all our members to sign up to the code, which is even more important as Britain’s Ocean City approaches the Mayflower 400 year and bids to be the first National Marine Park.” Jackie Young from Environment Plymouth said: “Taking action on single-use plastics is so easy. Everyone can do it so there’s no excuse. Our Plastic Free Business Pioneers have eliminated everything from coffee cups and straws to packaging. They’ve listened to us and to their clients who are increasingly asking about plastic-free options. It’s great for meeting environmental and CSR targets and, after the initial adjustments, can even prove cost effective. What’s not to like?” Since the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics was launched in June 2018: • 264 schools, community groups, families and individuals have signed up to be Plastic Free Community Ambassadors and 102 local businesses have signed up to be Plastic Free Pioneers as part of the work led by Environment Plymouth. • 100 campaigners have taken part in awareness raising ‘plastic surgery’ workshops • 800 volunteers took part in 160 litter picks with local community group Clean Our Patch, and collected 4,000 bags of litter. • 748 volunteers have taken part in beach cleans with Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and collected 261 bags of rubbish and 5,000 ‘nurdles’ (small plastic pellets used in a number of products) • CATERed who provide school meals for 67 of Plymouth’s secondary schools have removed 8,000 plastic straws, removed disposable plastic packaging and moved over to biodegradable • A Sea Bin has been installed by Plymouth City Council at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of a pilot project to monitor plastic pollution with the University of Plymouth

Plymstock student Sasha aims to become a qualified paramedic by the time she’s 21
Sasha Clarke, age 19, from Plymstock, is now a student paramedic after achieving triple distinction star grades on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at City College Plymouth – equivalent to three A Stars at A Level.
While traditionally many still attribute careers in the healthcare sector with A Level pathways, Sasha says that choosing a vocational course at college has helped her achieve more than she ever thought possible. She achieved a sought-after place on the degree in Paramedic Science at the University of Plymouth, and is on track to become a fully qualified paramedic by the age of 21. Sasha saids: “I went to Plymstock School and I did alright in my GCSEs – I passed what I needed to pass, but I wasn’t one of the brainiest ones. “A lot of my friends stayed on at sixth form to do A Levels, but I knew I wanted to go into a career caring for other people, and I really liked the outline of the health and social care course at City College. “I’m not keen on exams and do better with coursework, so the BTEC suited me best. I really enjoyed my time on the course – it made me a more independent person, which is what I needed for the job I’m doing now. “The class sizes were small and we had to do 100 hours of placements in a health care, child care or social care setting each year. “That put me in a great position to get a place on the degree in Paramedic Science at the university – because they require you to have work experience before they will accept you on the course. If I had chosen A Levels, I wouldn’t have had that option.” She added: “Growing up, some of my friends thought that college was the option for people who weren’t clever enough to do A Levels. That couldn’t be further from the truth. “I’ve got the maximum possible UCAS points, a place on a university course that is difficult to get on to, lots of work experience and a fast track to doing the job I really want to do. I’ll be a fully qualified paramedic by the time I’m 21.” Sasha added: “There’s no way I would be where I am now if I hadn’t chosen to do the BTEC course at City College – it was absolutely the right choice for me, and I think it’s a great choice for anyone who wants to get work experience on their course and the qualifications to get into university.” Anyone interested in starting a career in the healthcare industry should explore the range of courses and apprenticeships that City College Plymouth has on offer by calling 01752 305300 or visiting cityplym.ac.uk.

Big boost for grassroots music in city
Grassroots music venues across Plymouth have joined forces to create a fortnight long festival of music called Fightback Plymouth.
There will be more than 100 shows at over 20 venues between September 13 and 28. Fightback Plymouth has been coordinated by the Music Venue Trust in a joint initiative with Plymouth City Council to promote the city’s independent music scene. Venues taking part include Plymouth Pavilions, B-Bar, Barbican Theatre, Annabel’s Cabaret and Discotheque, The Treasury, The Underground, Fortescue Arms, The Junction and UPSU Bar and Main Hall. Fightback Plymouth is a new campaign that will encourage audiences to visit their local grassroots music venues and promote the Plymouth’s emerging and existing musical talent. There will be live music every day throughout the festival at a whole range of venues right across Plymouth. Many venue bars will be further participating in the Music Venue Trust’s fund-raising campaign by stocking Fightback Lager, a craft beer developed from within the grassroots music community. A donation from every pint and can sold gives financial support to the charity. Fightback’s Gary Prosser said: “These venues are the backbone of the live music scene in Plymouth, providing spaces where artists can take their first steps, develop and grow. Fightback Plymouth provides an opportunity to showcase the fantastic range of artists and venues that Plymouth enjoys, celebrate the history of our music scene and support its future.” MVT chief executive Mark Davyd said: “We are delighted to be working with Plymouth City Council on this public facing event which also provides the opportunity to research and survey the city’s music venues and music scene. “We will be working with local promoters, musicians and venue managers to understand the potential in Plymouth’s grassroots music venues and unlock the opportunity to build a world class music scene.” Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: “It’s fantastic to be working with the Music Venue Trust on Fightback Plymouth, which is going to give vital support to the local grassroots venues and musicians at the heart of our live music scene. “Most importantly, this is our chance to prove how passionate Plymouth is about live music. I want to encourage everyone to show their support by getting out and enjoying the events on offer, visiting the brilliant range of venues and watching our talented local bands and musicians.” Fightback Plymouth is keen to interact with local Plymouth businesses to create a truly unique festival that unifies the Plymouth grassroots community. Contact gary@ musicvenuetrust.com if you are interested in getting involved with the event. For details of the events and venues visit www.mvtfightback.com/plymouth
Dogs striking a pose for Plymouth charity A local canine photographer’s ‘Dogathon’ challenge has been raising much needed funds for Plymouth based Animal Sanctuary Woodside.
Having taken a tour around Woodside’s older resident dog and cat units, Stephen Porter at Hound Dog Images decided back in February to set himself the challenge of photographing 101 different breeds and cross breeds of dog in 2019. Offering his ‘paw-trait’ sessions for the price of just a £20 donation to the charity, Hound Dog Images’ goal is to raise as much money as possible for Woodside through the Dogathon Sessions during 2019. With a session and 7” x 5” desk frame (worth £175) on offer for the reduced donation price, Hound Dog Images promises to capture the ‘natural character’ of each four legged friend that signs up to the campaign. Held at a location near Yelverton, the results of
Stephen’s photoshoots are simply stunning, and his portfolio (including images of the dogs who have already taken part in the Dogathon) can be found on his website or Facebook page. Already well under way, Stephen has so far photographed a large variety of dogs through his Dogathon, and has raised a fantastic £480 in the process.
With 100% of the donations made going to the sanctuary, the cheque was presented to the charity and manager Debbie Haynes back in May, with Hound Dog Images hoping to raise even more in the coming months. To learn more about Hound Dog Images’ fundraiser and to book ‘paw-trait’ visit www.hounddogimages.smugmug.com.
Dawn of a new era for Co-op in Plympton A new chapter in the life of Plympton’s Ridgeway Co-op store was heralded on July 25 with a formal relaunch ceremony after an eight week refurbishment. The store was first opened just over 40 years ago by the then Plymouth and South Devon Cooperative Society as its flag-ship out of town supermarket under the brand of Plymco 1. It was at that time Plympton’s main supermarket and was used by many for their main weekly grocery shop. Competition from the likes of Sainsbury’s, Iceland and Lidl was not to come until some decades later but when it did it changed the way public shopped and the Co-op had to re-position itself to be more of a convenience and top up shopping location as well as introducing other offerings such as clothes concessions, a Post Office and a coffee shop to attract footfall. Following a merger of the Plymouth & South West Co-op (by which it had then become known) with The Co-operative Group in 2009, the store went on to be rebranded ‘The Co-operative’. In 2016 The Co-operative Group decided to ditch ‘The Co-operative’ branding and to go back to a refreshed version of its
Andrew Barnes get ready to cut the ribbon to mark a new chapter at the Ridgeway Co-op store, flanked by his colleagues, including store manager Alan MacLean (far right holding ribbon)
traditional ‘cloverleaf’ Co-op logo which had been found to be more popular with its customer base. The renewed cloverleaf branding has gradually been re-phased back in to the Co-op’s various businesses since 2016 and so it is that the refreshed cloverleaf logo is among the many changes to be seen in the refurbished Ridgeway store. So what else is new in the Ridgeway store - it has a brighter and more spacious look inside. Burton’s has a clothing concession in the store to compliment the offering of Dorothy Perkins and a third clothing
retailer will move into the store soon to occupy the space in front of the Post Office. The customer services desk has moved to a more central position in the check out area, the space it has vacated will be used as a showcase display to promote the Co-op. The coffee shop is not currently operating. That is having its own refurbishment and will re-open on 30 August under separate management by Churchill Catering who have successfully operated coffee shops for the Co-op at other stores throughout the country and at the
Co-op’s head office. It is not universally recalled who formally opened the store when it first started trading just over four decades ago. Some say it was Terry Scott and June Whitfield, others think it was the former boxer Henry Cooper. For its modern day relaunch and ribbon cutting the honour fell to the store’s longest serving employee, Andrew Barnes, who joined there 10 months after it opened and he has worked there ever since, (story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

Apprenticeships explained! Most of us have heard about apprenticeships, but all too often, they are overlooked for a more traditional educational route.
Apprenticeships can provide a golden opportunity: paid jobs with time set aside for study to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. We work in partnership with top local employers across a range of sectors including, Business, Automotive, Construction, Teaching, Hairdressing, Child Care, Engineering and Health & Social Care. Our learners work with the employer throughout the week, earning a salary, with 20% of their time spent with us in our state-of-the-art facilities led by industry experts to consolidate their learning. While children now need to stay in education until 18, they do not need to stay in school, and apprenticeships offer an alternative route to meet this requirement, with the added incentive of earning while learning! Most 16 year olds dream of the day they can take their driving test and afford to buy their first car, by becoming an apprentice the dream becomes an achievable reality! There are other benefits too. For example; did you know you could start an apprenticeship at 16? Did you know you could progress right through to degree level apprenticeships? Did you
know you can start an apprenticeship at any time throughout the year? There is something more rewarding about becoming an apprentice, not only can you gain the same level qualifications as your peers, you will become more employable and progress quicker through your chosen career. Apprentices often enjoy great success after their apprenticeship, with many employers offering them a permanent role on completion and the opportunity to progress further. Recent Skills Group successes include our hair apprentices, Abigail Foster, Olivia Bolt, and Chloe Webber who were the first in the Plymouth area to pass the new Hairdressing End Point Assessment with examining body, City and Guilds. So much on offer at Plymouth College of Art Whether you aspire to be a director, set designer, actor, or prop maker, working in theatre, film or television, they’re all made through creatives with different specialisms collaborating.
Plymouth College of Art’s UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts gives 16-19-year-olds the opportunity to learn and explore the varied skills that lead to many career paths in the world of performing arts. Experienced director, choreographer, performer and lecturer Nicola Rosewarne leads the programme after twenty years of touring nationally and internationally with Kneehigh Theatre, WILDWORKS and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Nicola teaches across a very broad range of specialisms and is currently most interested in the ‘pursuit of playfulness’ in performance and performer training. She said: “I’m delighted to join the team at Palace Court and can’t wait to meet the brilliant students who will be joining us in September.” Using live and digital techniques, students will gain hands-on experience in backstage skills such as make-up, costume, props, and set design. They will also explore and debate the ways that performance can influence people’s opinions and perceptions, thinking particularly about how the
messages in a performance can fit within a wider social context. This A-Level equivalent course sees students based at Palace Court, the college’s pre-degree campus, studying alongside graphic designers, filmmakers and fashion designers - opening up a world of collaboration. With the college’s established industry connections including past and ongoing collaborations with Tate, Barbican Theatre, BFI and Theatre Royal Plymouth, students will have access to opportunities across the UK, to sample life as a professional in the performing arts industry. The college has also recently been awarded International Baccalaureate (IB) World School status, meaning that students have the opportunity to study two IBCP subjects such
as English Literature, Film, History, Business Management, Mathematics or Psychology, alongside their chosen Extended Diploma course, combining both academic excellence and vocational skills. Recent research has shown that IBCP students ‘enroll and persist in university at higher rates than the national average’ and more than half go on to attend very competitive higher education institutions, demonstrating that the IBCP prepares students to attain some of the most selective university places in the world. From the lectures and creative classes to the live briefs and placements, the college ensures that all students are fully supported and prepared for the next stage of their creative journey. Many of their students progress into Higher Education, with their Extended Diploma students guaranteed a place on one of the many BA (Hons) programmes offered at Plymouth College of Art when they achieve a Merit or higher in their final assessment. From Performing & Production Arts, to Fashion & Textiles and Graphics, Illustration & Game Arts, there’s an Extended Diploma programme to suit all young creatives. Visit the Plymouth College of Art Open Day on Saturday September 28 to explore them for yourself!

Stannator packs away the plates and gets ready for wing-walk
Stannator of Plympton, Fiona Smith, has recently finished a week at the Harewood House Coffee Bar where she was raising money for her two chosen charities for the year, SSAFA and Moving On Stroke Club Plympton.
During the course of the week customers of the coffee bar pledged £350 towards a target of £1,000 for a sponsored wing-walk. Fiona will be doing this in Bodmin as the Chronicle goes to press, again to raise money for her two chosen charities. Further sponsorship for the wing-walk can be pledged at www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/fiona-goes-wingwalking The Stannator will be back for another week at the coffee bar next February. Best advice for all parents and babies in the city Children’s centres in Plymouth have been awarded a Certificate of Commitment from Unicef UK, in recognition of the steps they are taking to improve care and increase the city’s breastfeeding rates.
The children’s centres, run by Barnardo’s, Action for Children and Lark, have joined forces and changed the way they support Plymouth’s parents. The changes ensure that no matter which organisation runs the centre, where in the city it is, or who parents speak to they will receive the same level of support. Centres now offer organised, systematic support for parents about infant feeding. All support and advice is based on best practice and evidence, ensuring there is no confusion about how best to support your baby in those important first days, months and years. Councillor Jemima Laing, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “Being a new parent is an exciting and precious time, but it can also be confusing and daunting. We want to make sure all parents get the same best-quality advice in Plymouth and this certification is an important confirmation that we are doing the right things in the city.” Ruth Harrell, Director of Public Health at Plymouth City Council said: “Whatever their choice of feeding method, we want to ensure that all parents and babies are supported to form a strong, loving relationship: this is the best start for every baby. We do encourage breastfeeding as it protects babies against a wide range of serious illnesses in infancy, against cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes later in life and reduces the mother’s risk of some cancers. For those that can breastfeed it’s also easier, cheaper and less hassle than bottle feeding.” The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up by Unicef and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides a practical and effective way for health services to improve the care provided for all mothers and babies. In the UK, the initiative works with health professionals to ensure that mothers and babies receive highquality support to enable successful breastfeeding. The Certificate of Commitment recognises that a facility is dedicated to implementing recognised best practice standards. Sue Ashmore, Baby Friendly Initiative Programme Director, said: “We are delighted that Plymouth Children’s Centres have received this award. Surveys show us that most mothers want to breastfeed but don’t always get the support they need. Parents attending Plymouth Children’s Centres have the satisfaction of knowing that their staff are aiming to provide the highest standard of care.”

Councillor’s Corner with Rebecca Smith
Hope the summer holidays are passing without too much drama for you and your family. I was grateful for some sunshine, a few days away camping and preparing for a trip in September before plowing into the autumn term!
It’s been a month of getting overhanging trees and vegetation cut around Turnchapel and Mount Batten, speeding queries in Hooe, highlighting the brilliant activities taking place across Plymstock throughout the holidays, as well as dealing with the larger and ongoing issues that cross my desk. Did you get to visit the Fastnet Village at Mount Batten to welcome the Rolex Fastnet sailing racers at the end of their race from Cowes on the Isle of Wight? I had the privilege of attending their prize giving evening as the week drew to a close. Having done nothing more than venture out on a dinghy, I’m in awe of these world class sailors! It’s a brilliant event and a great way to show off Plymstock too. My colleagues and I were aware of the issue of rubbish across many of the ward’s green spaces - we received several reports of overflowing bins etc. Just to let you know, this is something we take really seriously and have been in touch with the council to ensure they are collecting from the parks and waterfront locations across Plymstock on a more regular basis when the weather is good. As ever, check out my Facebook page @CllrRebeccaSmith or drop me an email rebecca.smith@plymouth.gov. uk with any local issues you’d like help with.

Plymouth nursing home residents treated to undersea experience with virtual reality Residents of a Plympton nursing home were given the chance to dive head first into the underwater world without leaving the comfort of their living room, thanks to a visit from Ocean conservation charity, the Ocean Conservation Trust.
Residents living at the Merafield View Nursing Home in Plympton were surprised by the charity with the opportunity to experience life beneath the waves first-hand, thanks to a set of ten Virtual Reality headsets loaded with 360-degree videos. The footage was taken in the tanks of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth – which is run by the Trust – and featured some of the attractions best loved Ocean animals including Friday, the cheeky Green Turtle. Allowing residents to find out for themselves what it’s really like to go Scuba Diving in the Ocean, it was a long-held dream realised for many – and an experience they were able to share with some of the home’s staff’s children, who were also visiting for the day. As well as the innovative VR experience, the Ocean Conservation Trust took along some interesting Ocean artefacts for residents to look at, including a turtle shell, a Mako Shark jaw, and a Megalodon tooth, and chatted with the group about some of the amazing animals that can be found in our Ocean.
Freyja Thomson, public and community engagement coordinator, said: “We were delighted to be able to bring a little excitement into the residents’ day by showing them the wonders of our amazing Ocean. Many of them have never had the chance to Scuba Dive, and for some it was a burning ambition they had yet to fulfil – so we’re thrilled to have been able to facilitate that experience and bring their dreams to life. “For others, it was something they had never thought of doing, but the smiles on their faces when they had those headsets on said it all and everyone had a wonderful afternoon.” Gemma McFadyen, activities manager, who worked with the charity to arrange their visit to Merafield View, said: “We try hard to offer opportunities to our residents that enable them and their families to participate in meaningful activity that promotes their health and mental wellbeing. We try to be creative and provide different levels of stimulation. “By inviting the Ocean Conservation Trust into Merafield, we were able to bring the Ocean to our residents and sharing this experience with some of the staff’s children made it even more fun.” The Ocean Conservation Trust has over 21
years of history behind it and spends much of its time working with the public and local communities to offer them opportunities to interact with the Ocean – from visiting schools across Devon to deliver curriculumlinked learning sessions to arranging boat trips, rockpool rambles and beach cleans. This is the first time the charity has visited a nursing home in Plymouth – but it is now keen to establish regular sessions at Merafield, as well as extending the offering to other homes in the city. Helen Gowans, public and community engagement manager, said: “At the Ocean Conservation Trust, we’re all about giving people opportunities to experience the Ocean, and for some that is not always in the literal sense as it’s not always possible. “Even so, we believe that the Ocean is for everyone and we are always looking for innovative new ways to bring the Ocean into people’s lives, whatever their age and wherever they are. That could mean someone who lives in Birmingham and is nowhere near the sea, or it could mean someone in a nursing home, as it did in this case.” To find out more about the Ocean Conservation Trust, visit www. oceanconservationtrust.org
College leads to drama school and acting career for Daniel
Daniel Chambers from Ivybridge always knew he wanted to be an actor and using his training at City College Plymouth he progressed to East 15 Acting School and a career in theatre and television.
Having studied GCSE Drama at Ivybridge Community College, Daniel enrolled on a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Performing Arts at City College and specialised in acting. As he sought a practice-focused course, Daniel said: “Learning the craft of the profession was incredibly important to me. I was aware Nicola Rosewarne was teaching at the college and her approach to acting reflected the direction I wanted to take. “I felt that under Nicola’s influence I would receive the training best suited to my needs and be best prepared for moving forward. “The course was incredibly broad and the opportunities to explore different genres prepared me well for drama school. The teaching staff at the college are industry professionals and understand how to succeed in the sector; I was confident that the training at the college would be current and modern.”
Following his studies at City College, Daniel secured a place at drama school and went on to tour the UK, performing in pantomimes and Agatha Christie plays, as well as appearing on television. He said: “Theatre has always been my preferred
direction, particularly touring theatre. Naturally I have also fallen into television and it is definitely an avenue I want to continue exploring.” Daniel’s first job since graduating from drama school was at Sterts Theatre in Cornwall with Nicola Rosewarne in a play called ‘Third Light’,
demonstrating how important and useful it is for students to forge connections with professionals during their studies and how these connections can help boost a career. Daniel said: “I continue to keep in contact with Nicola; with lecturers like her you get a friend and a teacher.” For anyone considering a BTEC in Performing Arts at City College, Daniel said: “Go for it! The encouragement and guidance is like no other. The support I received was extensive, especially when I was pulling together monologues and preparing for drama school auditions. “If you want one-to-one support with the best intentions, I wouldn’t suggest anywhere else. The College is all about creating connections with professionals and exposing students to fantastic opportunities for the future.” If you are interested in starting your career in the performing arts or wider creative industries, explore the range of courses and apprenticeships that City College Plymouth has on offer by attending our Open Day on August 23, by calling 01752 305300 or by visiting cityplym.ac.uk.

With the majority of our students studying for academic qualifications, it has been particularly pleasing to see significant success in the facilitating subjects, especially strong outcomes in Maths, English, History and Modern Languages.’ Head of Post-16, Kairn Stone, was keen to share some of the individual success stories: Molly Disney and her very proud Mum

Kairn Stone, speaking on behalf of all associated with the school, added: “We are incredibly proud of all our students. Not only have they achieved highly but they have also made a lasting contribution to the school community. “They have grown as leaders and, through their work on recycling and sustainability, have made significant improvements for the student community and left a positive legacy for those following in their footsteps. We wish them all the very best of luck for the next stage of their life.”
Get set to master the moors and make a difference for work of St Luke’s Hospice Cyclists of all ages are getting set for one of Devon’s boldest and most popular charity challenges this autumn, the Tour de Moor in aid of wellloved charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.
The annual event – now in its tenth year – takes place on Sunday October 13, raising funds to help St Luke’s continue its specialist end of life care for terminally ill people, helping them to live well to the end. Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, the challenge in the rugged wilds of Dartmoor offers cyclists the opportunity of an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears. Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above! Alternatively, participants aged nine and above can take it down a gear and saddle up for 23km of tough riding over hills and through woods, and there’s also
the ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail that’s suitable for all the family. As well as Tour de Moor providing for every level of cycling ability, the money it raises means the highly skilled St Luke’s team can give not just expert medical care but also emotional, practical and spiritual support to families at the most vulnerable of times, whether their loved one is being cared for at home, in hospital or at its specialist unit at Turnchapel. Head of fundraising at St Luke’s, Penny Hannah, said: “Tour de Moor is always a terrific day. It’s fitness and muddy fun, and with three routes to choose from, it’s ideal for both families as well as more experienced cyclists who really want to push themselves. “Taking on the challenge is a great opportunity to get on your bike and help us provide vital care and support to patients and their families across the local
area, making every hill climb worth that extra effort!” Director of Print Copy Scan, Karl Welburn, said, “The calibre of the care St Luke’s provides is second to none, but we mustn’t take it for granted because none of us know when we might need it. “As the only specialist end of life care provider in this area, the charity needs continued support and that’s why we’re proud to sponsor Tour de Moor
again this year. “All the money raised by people participating goes directly to patient care.” The Tour de Moor challenge departs from 8.30am at Harrowbeer Airfield, near Yelverton, and finishes there. Sign up for the challenge at www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk/ tourdemoor or by calling 01752 492626. Registration costs £30 for the 52km or 23km route, and £15 for the 11km route.
Plymouth set to become one of the UK’s first cities of learning
An exciting project to turn Plymouth into a digital learning campus gets underway later this year.
The City Council has worked with the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) on a successful bid to the Royal Society for Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA) to become one of the first UK ‘Cities of Learning’. Cities of Learning is based on an idea from the United States that aims to widen students’ learning opportunities through a digital system. The project will bring together local businesses, organisations, networks and communities across Plymouth to develop learning opportunities for use on a digital platform under the following themes: • Creative, cultural, and digital • Health, youth, volunteering, housing • Social enterprise, community businesses Learners will be able to keep a record of their activities in a digital portfolio of achievement. Data from the platform will also help to provide valuable insight into learning activity and employment trends across the city, enabling targeted planning and streamlining of services. One of the key aims from Cities of Learning is to present combined learning offers, particularly to those young people who are disengaged from formal education, to recognise knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. The RSA is leading the Cities of Learning project with £250,000 of funding from the City and Guilds Group with Plymouth receiving a grant of £70,000 which will be administered by RIO as the project’s lead anchor organisation. City College Plymouth and Plymouth College of Art have also been key partners in the development of the project, which received investment because of the track record of partnership working in the city and Plymouth’s’ commitment to inclusive growth as demonstrated by iMayflower, Fab City, and Illuminate. Councillor Jon Taylor, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Transformation said: “This is a really exciting project for Plymouth to be a part of. We’re going to be making the whole city a digital learning campus which will ultimately encourage more people to take part in learning. As a council we are determined to ensure our young people are skilled and ready to step into the world of work and Cities of Learning is a way for students to keep a digital record of that learning.” Lindsey Hall, Chief Executive at the Real Ideas Organisation said: “Plymouth is a really exciting place to be, leading the way innovating inclusive approaches to grow our economy. Cities of Learning is key part of this jigsaw, creating a digital record of learning that is vital to businesses and communities. We are delighted to be involved, not least because Cities of Learning enables us all to recognise the many talented young – and older – people we work with. As the network spreads, we look forward to working with organisations across the city and beyond. It’s great – get involved!” There are several organisations already signed up to the project, including Youth Services and The Box. It’s anticipated that the project will get underway in September this year with the first badges going out to learners in October. Councillor Taylor added: “Being recognised as a City of Learning provides an opportunity for Plymouth to lead the way in innovative approaches to education. It provides a way to celebrate the city as a destination for learning, employability and cultural development as well as raising aspirations and promoting the achievements of our young people.”
£75 million commitment to city by top law firm
18 September 2019

Stannator’s charity receives £2020
Plymouth City Council has secured transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson as key tenants for its headquarters at Millbay.
The company has signed a new lease committing to Ballard House – and to the city and region – until at least 2035. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “What a great day. This is a company that not only works in Plymouth but works for Plymouth and whose staff are a big part of life here. “Womble Bond Dickinson are great ambassadors for this city with highly-skilled professional staff and their support for the city and in particular, the Mayflower 400 commemorations, is inspiring. “This is not just about office space, it is about an international company committing its staff and millions of pounds over the next 16 years to this city.” Craig Moore, partner and head of WBD’s Plymouth office, said: “With an office in Plymouth since 1881, we know that the city and the South West region are a great place to do business. “There is an enormous amount happening here and we are delighted to confirm the extension of our lease of Ballard House for the next 16 years and a refurbishment investment of over £1 million. “It has been a pleasure working with Plymouth City Council, their significant investment in the city and the pro-active nature in which they have been moving things forward made it a really easy decision for us to remain at Ballard House and make a significant investment here. “WBD’s Plymouth office continues to grow from strength to strength, providing clients with a unique offering of national and international experience on their doorstep. Our long term commitment to Plymouth is a reflection of the growth in our clients and the value we bring to them.” “We look forward to growing the business further”. The council occupies four floors of the seven story office block since moving out of the Civic Centre in 2014. Ballard House is now a base for over 700 council staff, but advances in technology means that more and more staff are being encouraged to work flexibly – both at home and in other council buildings – to keep the costs of office space down. Most of the staff are now hot-desking. It means the council also retains control of a key strategic site right on the waterfront at Millbay, an area currently undergoing significant regeneration.

Natalie Harrison, Andrea Chandler and HomeStart staff at the cheque presentation
Immediate Past Stannator Natalie Harrison attended the Plumb Tree Centre in Plympton in August where she presented a cheque for £2020 to HomeStart, her chosen charity for her term in office which ended in June. Mrs Harrison told HomeStart chief executive Andrea Chandler: “I chose HomeStart because
I feel it is a very valuable charity supporting families with children up to the age of 12 across Plymouth and the South Hams.” Mrs Harrison had herself previously been appreciative of practical help from the charity when she was laid up with a broken foot some years ago while bringing up her own children.
The £2020 was raised though a combination of activities including running the Harewood House Coffee Bar for a week, Christmas door-to-door collections with the Rotary Club of Plympton, a quiz night as well as a donation from local councillor Ian Darcy. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)
and early 2000s, showcasing how, in spite of their labelling as ‘self-centered’ and ‘fragile’ they are finding new avenues to continue networking, exhibiting, and asking questions regardless of location or financial situation. Elsewhere, Liveanimals Theatre Company’s ‘Fish in Blender’ – a comment on the current state of politics – is a thought provoking performance centred on accountability,
empathy, and just how bad society is willing to let things get before taking action. ‘Fish in Blender’ will be popping up in city centre locations across the three days. Flock South West’s Lucy Stella Rollins said: “We’re delighted to make our first set of Weekender announcements with further news to come shortly. “We have a plethora of exciting and ambitious artists showcasing their work this year with listings ranging from exhibitions, workshops and other dynamic activity to take place across the city. “ Expect everything from subtle interventions to performative spectacles in this year’s showcase of the city’s creative talent.” Over the years, the Weekender has been made possible with generous support from sponsors, Plymouth City Council, partner art organisations in the city, project grant funding from Arts Council England; and more recently, Plymouth Culture’s ‘Horizon’, a twoyear visual arts programme from Arts Council England’s ‘Ambition for Excellence’ funding programme for Plymouth in 2017-2018. This year, individuals and organisations across Plymouth and beyond have rallied together to raise funds for the festival through an ambitious Crowdfunding effort. An impressive £5,737 has been raised through Crowdfunder as match funding to support Visual Arts Plymouth’s successful Arts Council bid, exemplifying a strong artistic network in the South West. For more details and information about the various events visit www. plymouthartweekender.com. The Weekender will have a market stall in the Pannier Market on the Friday and Saturday, which will serve as a focal point and central information hub across the weekend.
Plymouth Art Weekender returns in September Venues of all shapes and sizes across Britain’s Ocean City will play host to exhibitions, events and community based activities for the 2019 Plymouth Art Weekender.
Founded in 2015 by Visual Arts Plymouth CIC (VAP), after the British Art Show 7 in 2011 saw a growing appetite for ambitious artistic activity in the city. The Plymouth Art Weekender started off as a grassroots experiment to bring together emerging and existing artists in a ‘fringe-like’ fashion. The collaborative event has grown in magnitude and last year, the Weekender partnered with The Atlantic Project, a pilot for a biennial for Plymouth to bring a set of renowned international artists and a programme of commissions across the city on the same weekend. Plympton Academy students save crisp packs for charity Students at Plympton Academy have been saving their old crisp packets to help the environment and to support the Special Olympics.
The school collected more than 100 crisp packets in just one week and have donated them to Maureen and Alan Stockwell from the Special Olympics Plymouth and District branch. The charity will use the money raised from the recycling of the crisp packets to help towards the cost of the Special Olympics Mayflower 400 Commemorative Games being held next year in Plymouth. “These unique games are a first for Plymouth with teams from Holland, America and locations associated with the Pilgrim Father’s in Britain. Many thanks to the pupils of Plympton Academy for their continuing support with this project,” said Maureen and Alan. The crisp packets collected by the students will be sent to the Walkers site in Leicester where they have started their own recycling scheme. It’s the largest crisp production plant in the world, producing more than 11 million bags of crisps a day. Crisp packets are now made with plastic and aluminium foil so are not compostable, biodegradable or easily recyclable. Plympton Academy student Myles Cotte, aged 12, said: “We should all take more care of our environment and we are trying to use these crisp packets to start to change things for the better by reducing litter and also fundraising for the Special Olympics.”

FOCUS ON QUALITY AT ANNUAL FUCHSIA SHOW Below: The winning display of geraniums entered by pupils of Woodford Primary School
The emphasis was on quality not quantity for the Plympton Fuchsia and Geranium Group’s annual show staged at Harewood House.
Entries were understood to be slightly down in number this year, but nonetheless there was an impressive array of blooms on display for visitors to the show to look at and it was an education to take in just how many different types of fuchsias and geraniums there actually are. With the exception of the children’s class this is a closed exhibition in that only Group members can enter exhibits. There was however no shortage of competition among members to take the numerous coveted trophies and bowls there are for the winners. Mike Shopland is likely to need a small van at the awards presentation night to take home his silverware, with over a dozen awards to his name. Kathleen Lakey and
Carol Stevens were among the women exhibitors who excelled this year. Kathleen won her own trophy for her miniature zonal entry as well as a string of other awards. Among the items Carol Stevens’ will be displaying on her shelves this year are the Saltram Bowl for Commercial Hanging Pot and the Vera Ellam trophy for most points (pelargoniums) in show. President Heather Turtell who specialises primarily these days in the smaller exhibits will have to make room on the shelves at her home for: the Griffiths Bowl for Floating Fuchsia Heads in a glass as well as a number of other trophies. One class this year for the Fuchsia and/or Pelargoniums in any colour/shaped container was judged by visitors to the show. They were asked to place donations in a jar by each exhibit in the class, with the one getting the most declared the winner. The money in the jars is to be donated

to Primrose Ward at Derriford Hospital, the Group’s chosen cause for the year. Exhibit A, a display fuchsia, seemed to be the clear leader in the public judging. Following on from a tradition started in 2016, the group donated a number of fledgling geranium plants to interested children at Woodford Primary School at the start of the year, with a view to the children nurturing the plants along to enter in the show. A dozen were subsequently entered into the show with Olivia’s plant being declared the overall winner in the children’s class. The Plympton Fuchsia and Geranium Group meet at Harewood House on the second Tuesday evening of every month at 7.30pm where they usually have a guest speaker as well as sessions offering growing advice. Room for two anyone? Woodside appeals for help in placing pairs of pets
There can be many reasons why an animal who needs a forever home might take a while to find it, and staff at Woodside Animal Sanctuary in Elfordleigh, become all too familiar with many of them.
For cats, its often the colour, for dogs, its often the size and for rabbits its often the age. However, there is one thing all animals looking for a home have in common. If you’re part of a pair be prepared to wait, and often for a long time. Lisa Darcy, deputy manager has worked at the sanctuary for over 20 years and in that time it has always been the same. Lisa said: “I can still vividly remember many pairs from over the years, and the lengths we often have to go to in order to find them the forever home that they need. One thing’s for sure though, it has always been worth the wait”. Presently, Woodside has many pairs looking for new homes from mice and guinea pigs to cats and dogs. Here are just a few: Chloe and Lakota are beautiful seven year old female GSD x Lurchers. These sisters are extremely close and therefore need a home together. They arrived at Woodside after their owner passed away. They need lots of reassurance at the moment as a lot has changed for them in a short space of time. They are fine with other dogs and can live with children aged eight and over.
Woodside’s Dawn with Sox and Tilly
Sox and Tilly are short haired cats, aged seven and five years. They arrived due to the ill health of their owner, but despite being friendly are often overlooked. They enjoy lounging in their outside area best, where they can look out onto gardens. Bella and Kristoff have already found some bunny to love, each other! The best friends are two years and six years old. Both are friendly, especially Kristoff who enjoys a cuddle. He does need medication every day for life, which Woodside will cover the cost of. They love space to display their bunny antics and explore. If you feel you could offer any of these perfect pairs a home or are looking for a pet to adopt, visit Woodside’s website at www. woodsidesanctuary.org.uk or give the sanctuary a call on 01752 347503.

Heart patients benefit from key partnership Patients needing specialist cardiology treatment are benefitting from a partnership between Derriford Hospital and Regent’s Park Healthcare to reduce waiting times.
The third cath lab developed as part of the partnership opened recently and the first patient at the Peninsula Heart Clinic, Pamela Robertson, was absolutely delighted with her treatment. She said: “Everyone was so nice; they made a scary experience less scary. This was my fourth procedure and I would be very comfortable coming back here in the future as everyone was so lovely.” Chief executive, Dr Anil Ohri and clinic manager, David Smith from Regent’s Park Healthcare marked the occasion with flowers and gifts for Pamela. The new facility is expected to treat
around 1,000 NHS patients each year, seeing those requiring basic angiograms and straightforward, day-case Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). In a partnership arrangement, the new centre offers services for NHS patients three days per week initially. It is staffed by RPH cath lab and recovery staff, with consultants from University Hospitals Plymouth carrying out the procedures. Similar cardiology public-private partnerships are running elsewhere in the country but in most areas, this work is outsourced to an off-site facility. The NHS retains control in this arrangement using a private facility situated on an NHS site, building on Plymouth’s status as a centre of excellence for cardiothoracic services.

It’s important to just say ‘yes’ sometimes THE
By Ian Pilkington, Trustee of Cross Rhythms Plymouth
Experience This piece is about how having a big enough ‘yes’ frees us up to take on challenges and voice our concerns at the same time.
But first, some background: At the time of writing, we’re enjoying the last few weeks of summer, the kids are still off school, the Ashes against the old adversaries are in full swing and the early mornings and evenings are still light enough to enjoy. So, in keeping with the season we now have Christmas shopping on the various TV shopping channels, countdowns to Christmas are appearing in our Facebook timelines and society in general seems to have lost the plot when it comes to appropriate timing. I used to get grumpy about the increasingly early Christmas mentions. It was pointless, nobody listened and certainly no one stopped the madness. So, this year I decided to get on board and go one better, reading the story of the birth of
Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, in August. Out of ‘season’ I read it from a fresh perspective; I suspended my ingrained expectations of what the Christmas story is about, and looked at how people responded. In a nutshell, the angel Gabriel (not fluffy with wings and harp, but awesome enough to cause trembling fear in the people who saw him so that he had to tell them not to be afraid) tells both Zechariah (husband of childless Elizabeth) and Mary (not yet married to Joseph) that they’re going to have children. Mary and Zechariah both say, in effect, ‘no way, how can that happen!’ and we can’t blame them. Mary was a virgin, which is a pretty big obstacle. Ian Pilkington Zac and Liz (excuse me) are an old man and woman and have never been able to have children. Archangel Gabriel, messenger of God (he’s a really big deal as far as angels go) rebukes Zechariah and renders him speechless until the birth of his son John; in contrast
he explains some more to Mary about the miracle that will take place in her womb. Why treat them differently? Why so harsh with the old man? The clue is in Mary’s later words: ‘I am the servant of the Lord, let it be to me as you have said.’ Getting back to my opening paragraph, she had already said a huge ‘yes’ to God, way before Gabriel showed up with his news. “As His servant, I accept whatever He has for me” is how The Passion translation of the Bible puts it. She’s already made a decision that she’s ‘in’, whatever happens. Mary was a young woman whose heart was set on serving God; Zechariah was an old man, a priest who was ‘doing his job’ serving God. Maybe his heart wasn’t in it? Certainly he wanted some proof to persuade him of what Gabriel said. It reads like he’s saying: “convince me and I’ll believe you,”

compared to Mary saying: “I’m already in, but how on earth are we going to do this?” We can be like either of them; at different times I’ve been like both of them and I know which one works best (it’s not the one where I protect myself with cynicism and hesitancy.) Whether it’s in marriage and other committed relationships; or in a team situation where my part is needed for the success of everyone, it’s always better when I’ve made a strong yes to our goal upfront and decided not to go back on it. When the difficulties come it can be hard either way and sometimes in our humanity we get it wrong for all kinds of reasons, but there’s a much better chance of ultimate success when our hearts have said ‘yes’ to a purpose bigger than ourselves. The best place to put that ‘yes’ is in the hands of perfect love, which the Bible tells us is God Himself, who understands our weaknesses and wants the best for us.

Cineworld to create more than 80 new jobs in city
Cineworld, one of the UK’s leading cinema chains, is on a major recruitment drive ahead of the opening of its new twelve screen cinema in Plymouth.
The cinema, located in Drake Circus, is set to open its doors in October 2019 and will create up to 82 jobs. In a bid to fill roles and engage the community, Cineworld hosted an open day for prospective employees on August 10. There are a variety of positions available including Cineworld team leader, team member roles, as well as Barista positions at Starbucks, which will form part of the new cinema. All roles are on either a part or full-time basis. The recruitment day will also offer visitors the opportunity to find out more about careers at Cineworld, as well as ask company staff questions and apply directly. The new cinema will feature twelve state-of-the-art screens showing the latest Hollywood releases, as well as pick ‘n’ mix and Baskin Robbins ice cream counters. Terry Whitehead, Cineworld Plymouth general manager, said:“We are looking forward to bringing a new cinema to Drake Circus and generating career opportunities in the local area. “Cineworld has fantastic career prospects and is a brilliant company to work for, so we welcome those from the local area with a passion for film to pay us a visit on the open day and find out more about the exciting opportunities available.” Prospective candidates can apply online at www.cineworld.com/careers

Everyone Active to raise funds for cancer support A local leisure operator is supporting a national charity to achieve its ambition of being ‘right there with everyone affected by cancer.’
Everyone Active has started a new two-year partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. It has pledged to raise £140,000 for the charity during this time, which would be enough to fund two Macmillan professionals for the whole year, enabling them to provide support to more than 500 patients. The partnership officially launched in August and to mark the occasion, Everyone Active’s five leisure facilities in Plymouth swapped their traditional red, white and black brand colours in favour of Macmillan’s green to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Colleagues at the Plymouth Life Centre, Brickfields Sports Centre, Plympton Swimming Pool, Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Swimming Pool, which are all managed on behalf of Plymouth City Council, donned green clothes, wigs and face paint in honour of Macmillan. Players from Plymouth Argyle also visited the Life Centre to donate home game tickets and signed merchandise for customers to win as part of a charity competition. Everyone Active aims to support the causes that impact its colleagues and customers, which is why it has chosen to team up with Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan estimates that out of Plymouth’s 270,000 population, over 9,000 are people currently living with cancer, with an average of 968 people sadly dying from the disease every year. The charity currently funds eight Macmillan professionals across from the clinical environment. We might also be able to help with transport if necessary. From apprentice to boss - the career journey of Carl Heslop
Work experience with a local building firm led Carl Heslop on to two courses at City College Plymouth - and he now owns a construction business with a turnover of £6million working with global giants such as Mars and Princess Yachts.
The 44-year-old from Plymstock has worked in the building trade since leaving school and set up Plymouth-based Obedair Construction four years ago. Carl realised how much he enjoyed the building industry during work experience with Hill and Lang when he was 17, so went on to do a two-year ONC in Building at City College, later returning to do a three-year degree in the subject. The courses were part-time meaning he worked four days a week for Hill and Lang, and later Morgan Sindall, and went to college one day a week. Carl said: “We are essentially a principal contractor so we manage the whole process and do most of our work business to business. We generally work for companies who are looking to develop, expand and alter their existing business premises. “We work for all the local authorities and there

are three global clients that we’re working with. From a blank sheet of paper to where we are now, it’s grown quite rapidly.” Before setting up Obedair, highlights of Carl’s career included being involved in the preparation of the Royal William Yard for its massive redevelopment back in 1998 to 2001. He worked on completely refurbishing the New Cooperage, including re-roofing the Grade 1 listed building, its windows, surveying stonework and scaffolding every building. The company does a lot of heritage work, and has just finished the £1.2million redevelopment of Pearn House, another listed building. And it’s not just smaller firms Obedair deals with. They are working with global clients Becton Dickinson in Roborough, having finished a £3.5million job for them last year and now moving on to an extension to their warehouse. They do client lounges for Princess Yachts and some internal alterations for the manufacturing spaces at Wrigleys, owned by Mars. Carl said: “At this stage of the business to be working for three global clients is great.” But it was when he was 17 that Carl got his first taste of construction, when he did work experience during his A Levels at Stoke Damerel
Community College. Carl said: “I didn’t know anything about the industry but I enjoyed it, enjoyed the environment, and enjoyed the type of work I was doing.” His plan had been to go to university but he spent the last year of his A Levels working for Hill and Lang for free every Friday, when he had no lectures. They then asked him to stay, offering him an Apprenticeship-type role. He enrolled on City College’s ONC in Building which he did one day a week for two years. He then did the HNC course at Exeter College and returned to Plymouth to do the degree in Building, again at City College. Studying at the same time as working meant Carl could not only earn money but also put the skills he was learning at College to the test straight away. He said: “I’m someone who likes to see the relevance of what I’m learning so the good thing about the course was that you’re learning your trade, you’re earning money and also seeing the relevance of what you’re learning at college. “Therefore you can relate the two and it really helped to get the academic knowledge alongside the practical knowledge as it complements each other.”

Carl Heslop...from apprentice to boss
During his degree, Carl did some management modules which sparked his interest. He later went into managerial roles and ran two businesses, eventually doing a masters degree at the University of Warwick. He added: “I probably wouldn’t have known about what management is, and that was my first taste of it at City College. “It broadened my horizons to other disciplines within the industry rather than just the bubble I would have been in.” Carl says the industry, as it is today, has plenty of opportunities for young people to study alongside working in construction. He said: “There are many opportunities in the industry, particularly in construction, where doing your qualifications alongside experience is a bit of a golden ticket really.” If you are interested in starting a career in the construction and building industry, explore the range of courses and apprenticeships that City College Plymouth has on offer by attending our Open Day on August 23, by calling 01752 305300 or by visiting cityplym.ac.uk.
