and welcome... ….to October’s edition of Love Saltash Wow! I can’t believe that we are no sooner off the beach and back to school than now heading for half term and Halloween. More about Saltash’s own unique brand of Autumn Celebrations in next month’s issue as there are still lots of developments in the pipeline. For this edition we hope you enjoy our continued focus on what makes living in Saltash so great the incredible amount of voluntary

work for good causes that goes on here, the vibrancy of our young people, the commitment to the environment and the abundance of creativity that makes life just a little bit sweeter. Artists often seem to have a different way of moving through life, slowly enough to consider the environments they find themselves in, with enough care and value to immortalise the moment into something more

You really need a Power of Attorney!

A lasting power of attorney is a legal document, in which you appoint another person (or persons) to manage your affairs, if you have lost the capacity to do so and this doesn’t just affect the elderly. There are two types of Lasting power of attorney (LPA), one enables your appointed attorney(s) to deal with property and financial affairs - and the other enables your appointed attorney to deal with your health and welfare issues. What happens if I do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney? Close friends and family (including your spouse) do not automatically have the

right to take over. The Office of the Public Guardian will appoint a Deputy to act on your behalf. This process takes time and is expensive, which may mean that bills cannot be paid and affairs cannot be looked after. Old age is the most common cause of mental incapacity, but incapacity may exist in other circumstances and is not dependant upon age or other f` oreseeable' circumstances. A lasting power of attorney is just as important as a will! Contact ANITA HUTT LL.B(Hons) MSWW 01579 344433 to arrange a home visit now.

FUNDAY FOR JIA

6

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a voluntary personal and social development program for young people between the ages of 15-17 which is funded by the Government. It aims to improve young people’s skills and opportunities in life, as they develop their abilities and gain a qualification at the end of the programme. As a part of the NCS qualification, a team of sixteen students from Devon and Cornwall took part in a Social Action Project (SAP), aiming to give back something really special to their local community. The group decided on their SAP quickly as one of the students, Jasmine Leslie from Saltash Community School, lives with a form of childhood arthritis (JIA). Discovering that young people can also suffer from arthritis, the group wanted to raise funds for a charity that supports young people with the condition (JIA-at-NRAS).

Article by Kaye Bonner

JIA is caused by an overreactive immune system, and causes swelling stiffness and pain in the joints and can also affect the eyes. Due to the limited amount of treatment available, and often multiple flare ups, it can be difficult for a child to go into remission, making their life painful and difficult to keep on top of day to day pressures. The group of NCS participants decided they wanted to do something to help bring awareness to

this disease. They organised a large fundraising event in Saltash with just one week of planning, contacting local companies asking for support, compiling risk assessments, posters, and presenting in schools and youth communities to promote the event. They also created an online fundraiser and Facebook page for extra donations and to raise awareness in the community, and made a video which has had 400 views on YouTube. The event on Warfelton Field on Sunday 21 July was a MAMMOTH success. On the day there was a bouncy castle, hog roast, raffle, BBQ, games, bake sale, fête stalls and a JIA information stall. Remarkably, they managed to raise £642.37 on that day alone. The online fundraiser raised £1115, bringing the group’s total to nearly £1800! NCS has been delivering its programme over nine years to over 1000 pupils per year and this total is a record breaking amount! Along with the other NCS teams, the group graduated on September 1.They celebrated in style with their team leader Dale Lamey with a meal afterwards. More information about JIA with an opportunity to donate can be found on JIA-at-NRAS’ website at www. jia.org.uk, and the group’s video can be found at www.tinyurl.com/ jiavideo&lt (Information supplied by Jasmine Leslie).

In Brief

Next phase of Tamar Bridge maintenance

works begins

Recent inspections identified that the deck waterproofing and steel bolts holding the kerb units in place were nearing the end of their serviceable life and needed replacing. The works are essential to prevent the steel bridge deck from corroding and to ensure the continued safety of those crossing the bridge. In order to replace the waterproofing system and steel bolts, the scheme involves the removal and reinstallation of approximately 7,200 kerbs (equivalent to 3.6 kilometres if laid end to end). Constructed using recycled plastic from 5 million milk cartons, the lightweight kerbs form a vital part of the vehicle restraint system. So far, the contactor has removed 1,200 kerbs and 4,800 steel bolts from the inside (north) kerb line of the south cantilever and cleaned and prepared this section of steel deck. Additionally, they have installed 2,000 new stainless steel bolts, applied 600 meters of new waterproofing and reinstalled 500m of kerb units. Access across the south cantilever of the bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters will be maintained until 24 September and there will be no impact on other bridge users until after this time. Work will begin on the westbound lane of the main deck on 25 September. At this point the south cantilever will be closed to pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters. It will remain closed to these

8

groups for the remainder of the scheme. This will enable the south cantilever to be used by all other traffic, meaning that we can maintain the four traffic lanes that the bridge usually operates. A free shuttle bus service will be provided for all pedestrians, mobility scooters and cyclists who are being advised not to attempt to use the south cantilever lane or mix with vehicles on the main deck for safety reasons. The shuttle buses will operate every 15 minutes throughout the day and every 20 mins during the night between the Tamar Bridge car park and Fore Street in Saltash. Collection and drop off points will be clearly signposted at each location. Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee and Highways England are meeting regularly to discuss the impact of these works on drivers and how disruption can be kept to a minimum. Drivers are advised there could be delays during the work, particularly at peak times, and to plan their journeys and listen to the latest traffic reports.

Good Luck Mark

10

Sometimes the unsung heroes slip away quietly as they are often the kind of people who don’t like to draw attention to themselves. However, we were contacted by numerous sources about the amazing work done by Mark Hawker, specifically as Chair of Trustees for Saltash Foodbank. Mark and his wife Sarah have lived in Saltash for 25 years, raised their 3, now adult, children in the area and were active members at St Nicholas and St Faith Church, where Mark was a server and Sarah was in the choir. They recently moved to the Cambridge area where Mark will be a full time verger at St Edmonsbury Church and Sarah is taking up a head teacher position. Mark will be much missed by those at the foodbank as he chaired the meetings since the foodbank was first thought of in 2011 by Saltash Churches Together. The foodbank first opened its doors at Easter 2012 and since then has fed 6000 people (adults and children).Â

Mark being presented with Certificate of Thanks by Mayor Councillor Gloria Challen at the Wesley Church annual coffee morning. Photo by Mark Chanter.

In recent years the foodbank has seen the numbers needing emergency food increase steadily. The main reason currently is people struggling under the Universal Credit Benefit, where they are paid monthly, instead of weekly or fortnightly. This takes some getting used to for those going over to this benefit. Finance was an area that Mark was very aware of as he had been Treasurer at the foodbank for the last 2 years. As the spokesperson for the foodbank at town council meetings, he was also good at encouraging individuals and groups to support the foodbank financially. Mark has seen the foodbank, at one time struggling financially, as now being in a much better position. With Mark leaving such a hole, the Foodbank are relieved that a new chair and treasurer have

been found to fill these important roles and warmly welcome Liz and Jill. The Saltash Foodbank drop in has, this year, changed its opening times. On Monday and Wednesdays it is still open between 2 and 4 pm but on Fridays have decided to open earlier to work alongside Citizens Advice, who are open in the mornings for their drop in session. Opening hours on Fridays are now between 11am to 1pm. Affected families need to obtain a food voucher first, more information on 08003282124. Donations can be made to support the work at www.virginmoneygiving saltash foodbank. Items currently needed are tinned meats, tinned tomatoes, deodorants, shaving items, shampoo and conditioner.

Let NHS Kernow

know what you think

NHS Kernow have so far conducted three workshops in Saltash, where users of health services can contribute to the discussion as to what kind of services we have, including the future of St Barnabas. You can read more about what has been discussed on their website, www. kernowccg.nhs.uk, putting St Barnabas in the search bar. Kate Mitchell from the Engagement Team is hosting two more drop-in sessions for anyone who has not had the opportunity to attend one of the previous sessions, and would like to find out more about the work, and to offer their thoughts in an informal way with a member from the project team. The sessions will take place from 4.30pm to 7.30pm and you are welcome to drop in at any time during those hours at: Tuesday 8 October – The Guildhall, Fore Street Saltash and Thursday 17 October – Saltash Library. You do not need to book to attend sessions, but you can contact Kate on kate.mitchell8@nhs.net or 01209 832420.

Cookery Students

Support Celebrity Chef

Plymouth Seafood Festival was back for its eighth year bringing celebrity local chef Jacques Marchal alongside eager trainees from Saltash. Professional Cookery students from Cornwall College Saltash assisted a host of chefs with preparing, cleaning, cooking and demoing their culinary skills on the main stage. Level 3 Professional Cookery student, Andrew MourelleNash, 18, said, “ this is the first week back at college this academic year and we are already working with industry experts who are helping me inspire to be the best”. Head of Department for Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said “Attending events like these really helps to enhance the learning experience for our students. It supports our position as ambassadors for work experience with Plymouth City Council and enhances our reputation as one of the only Peoples 1st gold accredited centres for fish and shellfish.

Further Concerns regarding Traffic

on Gilston Road

A meeting has been held with local councillors, Sheryll Murray MP, Cormac Highways and Allan Mendelsohn, MD of ADL Traffic and Highways to address concerns raised by the new outlets on Gilston Road and residents. The proposed Saltash cycling and walking plan will also affect the already congested area, and Cormac were asked how data was being used to draw up a strategy to alleviate the problems. It was noted that problems occur at certain times of day during the working week and for longer periods at weekends, when turning right proves to be extremely difficult due to traffic that is queuing on the northbound carriageway of Callington Road, back to the Pilmere roundabout and often further back towards the Burraton traffic lights, with traffic also queueing back along Burraton Road. Various options were discussed without a decision being made, and most felt that any improvement at this junction would not prove effective until such time that the queueing of traffic along the northbound carriageway is eliminated, which it is hoped will be achieved by modifications at the Carkeel roundabout due to take place later this year. In view of the above, Sheryll Murray MP has written to Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government to ask that the time constraint on funding for the Cycling and Walking Scheme in this area be given an extension, to allow for the Scheme to be advanced only after the Carkeel roundabout improvements have been made. A response to the letter is currently awaited.

With Autumn approaching now is the perfect time to start preparing your garden for next year Plant bulbs… With Spring flowering bulbs all in stock ready to be planted, including Tulips, Snowdrops (Galanthus), Dwarf Narcissus and Hyacinths. Feed your lawn… Autumn is the most important feed of the year, establishing the roots to withstand the hard, cold and wet winter for a better show the following year. Why not add a splash of colour... With summer baskets ending and colour being in shorter supply, why not spruce up the baskets and pots with winter colour from pansies, violas, primroses and cyclamen among others. These will bring colour through the autumn into the winter, cheering up the shorter, wetter days. Mulch borders… Laying mulches onto borders and around plants will help add nutrition to the borders over winter whilst also keeping weeds from growing. This helps with a healthier and lower maintenance garden.

Pippa, Pixie One Saltash resident, who is not a professional

breeder, has managed to become a 2020 Crufts Qualifiers. Lilian has loved dogs all her life – so much so that when living in Germany she suffered the emotional and financial cost of the quarantine system, before the days of Pet Passports. “My two Poodles were away from me for nine and six months!” explained Lilian. “I used to go and visit them – it was a bit like prison!” On retiring, Lilian felt she would like a Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog), a breed of dog that is both intelligent and placid and was originally bred as a herding dog in the Scottish Highlands. She enrolled in a Grooming Course to learn how to look after their beautiful coats, and from here gradually began to make friends with people from the world of dog showing and breeding. She started showing just for fun and to support various local charities and then got involved in obedience and showing classes. Her first dog, Pippa, who celebrated her sixth birthday in August, is the most remarkable Lilian feels, but cannot be shown because

We’re delighted to have recently been awarded the role of Plastic Free Ally, working in partnership with Plastic Free Saltash, and Saltash Town Council to help Saltash become a more environmentally- friendly town, and reduce our plastic use. Getting stuck into our new role, we’ve organised several new initiatives which need your help… Recycling schemes, reducing the amount of stuff that ends up in landfill. We’re collecting items including; jewellery (broken or whole), stamps, foreign currency, gadgets (Wii controllers, consoles, ipods etc), mobile phones, cameras, inkjet cartridges. We’ve probably all got these things lurking at

the back of a drawer; if you bring them down to No 4, we’ll prevent them ending up in landfill, and raise some cash for local eco-friendly projects. Selling organic veg grown by the Saltash Gardening Group at Saltash.net, with all monies raised going towards seeds etc for next year. We regularly post on facebook to let you know what’s just been harvested; you just need to buy it from No 4! Dating back to the 14th century in Italy, natural ingredients like chalk, lime, clay, mud and even dirt have been used to create paint. The Italians painted with these ingredients and a method called dry secco. Secco colours dry lighter than the colour upon application producing a distinctive chalky quality of a distempered wall. Dry (secco) fresco paintings dating back thousands of years are still in remarkable condition. This is a paint which will keep its beautiful appearance for years to come. Donna Hemmings may be a new face on Fore Street with the appearance of her painted and solid waxed furniture and giftware shop, Eclectic Interiors; but she has also survived the tests of time, developing her hobby into a successful business, and gaining experience and technique

with this ethos in her calm and unflustered way sourcing and repairing furniture which she turns into unique bespoke items for her customers. Most days you will find her on her knees painting away. After years of trial and error, the paint she stocks, Authentico, has proved itself to be incredibly versatile. Vegan and child friendly, it is water based so can even be poured away without harming the environment, although with 180 stunning colours, and the ability to cover any interior or exterior surface, it’s unlikely you will have much left. Moving her shop to Saltash has given her lots of extra room to display some of the trinkets she uses to enhance rooms with the personality of their owners. At the back of the shop she has a large space and kitchen to hold classes to share creative experiences with others – including wreath making, lampshades, painting classes – three hours of artistic bliss in a grown up play area to have fun and meet like minded people alongside an elegant afternoon tea. Donna’s laid back style encourages browsing and she is happy to answer all your questions, so do take the time to pop to 93 Fore Street or view some of her beautiful offerings or discuss commision painting on Facebook @Eclecticathome. Kerry Pike 3rd from R, and her happy team at Belvoir Estate Agents

FORE STREET FEELS GREAT Belvoir Estate Agents on Fore Street recently celebrated its first anniversary in Saltash. (time flies!) Kerry Pike who owns and manages the franchise is delighted with how well she and her team have been received in Saltash, and how successful their first year has been.

30

“Taking over the business from the very established and well-known firm Hennings Moir definitely helped us settle in quickly, as we retained nearly all their experienced staff” enthused Kerry. “Cheryl Nute, Marie Webber and Jane Layer are all Saltash girls who stayed with us after the acquisition.”

Kerry went on to explain that although Belvoir is a franchise, she is given free reign to deliver the kind of business she wants to and feels her all female office is an important part of their identity in Saltash. “I have such a lovely team here. We all pull together and get stuck in, supporting and helping each other out. I am lucky to have them” says Kerry, “And I think our customers benefit by the fact that we get on so well.” Kerry initially ran the Saltash office as a second branch to her original one in Plymouth. “However,

Kerry explained, “I love it here. I can pop out to a different place for lunch every day of the week and pick up toiletries as well as food for an evening meal. As a busy working mum with a young family, I can’t tell you what a difference that makes!” Kerry’s enthusiasm extends to the success of her business. “We have seen prices hold well, despite the uncertainties of Brexit, with the market attracting serious buyers who are ready to move. Our business relies on a good personal reputation which we inherited from Hennings Moir and have capitalised on through our commitment

I just wanted to be here all the time as the Fore Street building is so busy and bright. We get much more footfall here than we did in Plymouth, with people dropping in all the time just to have a look.” In the end Kerry moved her Plymouth business to Saltash, another coup for Fore Street in its determination to continue to flourish.

to customer care. Many of our customers like the personal touch, whether that’s good quality printed details to study on the kitchen table, or our knowledge of local property. We can often retell the history of happy homes that were sold by a member of our Saltash team first time around, creating a real sense of community for prospective buyers wanting to relocate to Saltash.”

THE PROS AND CONS OF PROGRESS

If you have visited Warfelton playing area recently you might have noticed some interesting goings on. The two football pitches which are used every Saturday during the football season have had more than just a makeover but all four goalposts have been replaced. “It had to be done”, said Robin Duff chairman of Saltash United Juniors. “Both sets of posts were rusty, unsightly and not in line with FA requirements as they were square.” It must have been quite a shock for the residents to wake up and find the posts had gone, but the consensus is that the new ones are much more fit for purpose. Both the senior and junior teams are grateful for Saltash Town Council support to replace the two sets of posts nearest the leisure centre with new replaceable aluminium ones, and for Cornwall Airport Authority who provided a grant to replace

36

Saltash United Juniors Under 15’s the senior team posts. Local company Dunchaul provided the expertise to remove them. Said Robin, “ I am not sure how long they have been in place; it must be over 20 years and it took about 20 minutes to see them gone.” However, it is not all good news. The third team were in action playing Boscastle in a Duchy premier league fixture, their first since putting in place the new goalposts. The match ended with a three all draw, with one of the opposing team’s goals going in off the post. Robin grumbled, “ I am certain that if the square posts had still been there it would have rebounded back into play and we would have won the match. I will only be content when one of our efforts does the same!”

Saltash Community School goes green!

Article by Matthew Oakes

Year 7 students have made a brilliant start to their new school year. They have already been involved in a day of activities called Steps to Success to prepare them for life at secondary school. The day involved interactive workshops on keeping a healthy body and mind; having high aspirations; building character; and literacy. They’ve been welcomed into one of four Houses where they have learnt about our school values and our TEAM ethos. Smartly dressed in the school’s new uniform, we are proud of our new logo. The new green colour represents our renewed focus on our environment and global warming. We also wanted to keep our community status and ensure this is key to our ethos and that of our Multi Academy Trust (SMART). Our new motto is ‘Achieving More

38

Together’: a fundamental belief that our school is working within and for the community of Saltash. To kick start this academic year, we have donated various food items to The Real Junk Food Project who use food discarded by supermarkets. The organisation uses the food to provide catering at a number of local groups and regularly provides a buffet at Saltash Wesley Methodist Church for anyone to enjoy. Some of our Year 7s are pictured before the delivery left our school. This is our first action to show our commitment to the Cornish Schools’ Green Charter. It was followed up on Friday 20 September by a whole day focussing on environmental issues and global warming.

CAN’T STOP KATE Kate Queally from Landrake could have celebrated her 50th birthday with a big party or a few celebratory nights at the pub. Instead, she set herself a unique challenge – to go open water swimming for 50 consecutive days. With friends joining her on various legs of the tour, which took her right across the UK, it proved a life-changing celebration for Kate that sparked a passion for the open water and it’s something she hasn’t

42

been able to shake off since. She swam on day 51, and again on day 52. Now, Kate has swum in open water for more than 750 consecutive days. It’s proved rewarding, both mentally and physically, for Kate, who has twice been diagnosed with breast cancer “I love the feeling of being under the water,” she said. “I never feel like I have cancer when I’m swimming. “I sometimes have aches

and pains, and they always go when I’m swimming. I feel like it’s really good for me. I love the social aspect and everything is always better after a swim.” Kate had already made a real impact on all who had joined her for an open water swim, but she sensed an opportunity to use her energy for even greater good. She began fundraising for various causes at each of her organised swims, with generous locals and visitors raising hundreds of pounds each week. After watching a documentary featuring the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Kate selected Swim Safe as one of her charities of choice. Swim Safe (swimsafe.org.uk) – created by Swim England and the RNLI – teaches thousands of children across the UK, aged 7-14, how to swim

safely outdoors. With many locations along the coast of Cornwall, it was a fitting cause and Kate helped to raise almost £450 for Swim Safe programmes around the country. She said: “Everyone living by the sea is quite keen on getting people swimming safely - not telling children or adults that the sea is dangerous and you need to stay away from it, but that you need to respect it and you can use it safely and learn how to.” The unstoppable Kate has recently completed the Scilly Swim Challenge and is part of a growing number of open water swimming enthusiasts. Contact her on facebook if you feel inspired or visit swimming.org for more information. If you would like to donate please visit the Swim England Charity page. C.R.A.P – (Conserving Resources Associating People) Saltash Facebook page was set up by a tiny team of 3, Tanya Hatch, Tracey Rhodes and Shojiro Frank who want to stop the throwaway culture and find ways to reuse our items that are no longer needed but that still have plenty of life. The team are passionate about the welfare of our planet and that of our own children’s future. Initially a way of ensuring that items could be given away free, the page grew to support, W.I.S.H Saltash (Wanted In Saltash Here) so members could post requests for items, therefore saving the need to buy more goods! They are ever growing groups as the word spreads, having around 2300 members despite being just over one year old. Members all need to live in Saltash, so there is an added benefit of knowing that you don’t need to drive for miles to collect or deliver. Tanya commented, “It’s quite incredible the

quality of the items passed on. The generosity of members’ giving goods that they could possibly ‘sell’ on elsewhere is amazing. Every day as we ‘approve’ the free items, the variety never fails to astound us. We keep a close watch on proceedings and problems are ironed out to the best of our ability. Certain issues are difficult to police but generally, transactions are smooth running, and highly successful. Members are encouraged to private message us to report any wrongdoings or problems encountered. “We would like to thank our members for their positive words of support and thanks to us as a mini team of admins. We each have very busy livesworking full time, with families and responsibilities alongside our deep passion for our natural planet and protecting its resources. We believe our group goes some way to help this. If you haven’t yet joined our groups...then now is the time to do so! Find us on Facebook!”

Just Be News

Paris... The Place to Indulge in French Wines There are, of course, many reasons to visit this beautiful city. Purely in the interests of research we took on the task of exploring the French capital and discovering what it had to offer for wine enthusiasts. Firstly and quite surprisingly we found that it has its own urban winery! Winerie Parisienne, sources grapes from around France including some from their very own vineyard near Versailles on the Ilede-France! There are 4 main wines and they are certainly worth seeking out as they are stunning: Don Paris: A concentrated and refreshing sparkling Vermentino Grisant Blanc: A Sauvignon Blanc. Beautifully fresh and floral Grisant Rouge: A Merlot/ Syrah blend. Attendees of a recent Just Be wine tasting absolutely loved this wine Jugement de Paris: A bold expression of grapes from some of the best vineyards around France (Grenache/ Merlot/ Tannat/ Syrah) We then took to the streets to seek out the best wine bars in Paris: Willi’s Wine Bar Run and owned by an Englishman, Willi’s is widely regarded as Paris’ best. Named after a beloved dog (full name William Foster Simpson Browing III) A rare breed basset who was apparently a party animal and never happier than when looking after customers at the Bar). Now sadly buried under the gas meter at the front of the bar. Owner Mark is a Rhone specialist and we loved his 2016 St Joseph… but felt we ought to also try his Bourgueil, a beautifully fresh Cabernet Franc red from the Loire. Oo,

48

and his Chateauneuf du Pape – rich and silky. Willi’s are also known for their poster artwork – sometimes from a famous artist, on occasions by a member of staff. Le Garde Robe Bustling and intimate. This bar offers a small and fast rotating selection of wines by the glass as well as a wall full of many fantastic wines available by the bottle. We chose a rare red grape (Grolleau) from the Loire. Beautifully fresh and fragrant and a Riesling from Alsace – intense and concentrated. L’Avant Comptoir de la Mer As the name suggests they are seafood and fish specialists, with selection of tapas dishes depicted all over the walls and ceilings! It was all too much to take in so we allowed the knowledgeable host to feed us with whatever she chose. We were not disappointed. Wonderful flavours washed down by her choices of whites from the Loire and Beaujolais, served in beer glasses, to wash it all down. Quirky but delightful! Hot Tips: • Don’t expect anything to be open on a Sunday • Go with the flow • Celebrate all that is French!

Add some flowers and welcome the pollinators

Messy, Irregular but Necessary In July, Saltash Town Council narrowly voted not to declare a climate emergency, unlike Cornwall Council. This decision surprised the committee of Saltash Environmental Action (SEA), because over the years Councillors have worked to improve the local environment in many ways - supporting litter picks, greening of the environment especially Pilmere, reducing plastic at public events, prioritising green issues in the Neighbourhood Plan and so on. Recognising that Councillors are careful to spend

residents’ money wisely, SEA guesses that they were just unsure of the consequences and costs of declaring climate emergency. SEA believe that several changes are relatively easy - and some even save money! They suggest starting with buying electricity from a supplier of renewable energy, fitting low energy lights, switching street lights off earlier, planting trees, reducing grass cutting to allow wildlife to flourish in the green spaces - and forming a climate change working group. That’s our on-site professional mental health provision, delivering an immediate response to young people who are in crisis or struggling. We’re incredibly successful at this and it’s no exaggeration to say that we change and sometimes save lives.

This is where reality bites. Although we get major donations of equipment and often stage complex gigs (because top bands usually waive all but their expenses), it costs serious money to run our day to day services. We need to maintain our building, attract and retain top tutors and ensure our mental health services are kept operational. Fundraising is therefore crucial. And that’s how you can help. We need a volunteer to assist us with writing fundraising bids, for example, our successful 2018 application to Global’s ‘Make Some Noise’. LOWENA -

Something unique and exciting is about to happen in Saltash! This Autumn a musical/theatrical event will bring together performers from the local community and beyond. We will tell a story of love, tragedy and triumph against an all-but forgotten backdrop - Wearde Camp, Saltash. The Camp was a training facility for troops preparing for battle in the First World War. After the War, Wearde Camp focussed on convalescence for injured troops returning to face a hopeful, yet uncertain, future. There are many stories to tell but ours will be amazing and as unforgettable as this extraordinary period in the history we now share. In 2018 ‘Blood Red Rose’ was created and staged in Saltash. This was a musical commemoration of the Suffragette Movement and the end of the First World War. Composed by Julian Barnicoat, commissioned by the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation and performed by the people of Saltash and beyond, the final performance was staged before a delighted, capacity audience. That energy is now driving a new, adventurous and very different work; this time commissioned by the Saltash Great War Committee. Children and adults regardless of age or ability can take part. It doesn’t matter whether you consider yourself ‘a good singer’ or whether you have ever had this kind of experience before – your enthusiasm is what we need. As a community project this event is open to all. Don’t let this pass by and then think, “That was great, I wish I’d been part of it!” ….. Don’t miss out, get involved, be inspired and enjoy it! There are many different roles – come along and join in! Rehearsals began at Burraton Methodist Church (Janeva Court) on Monday evenings from 6.45 – 8.00 pm and at Burraton Community Centre on Wednesday afternoons from 1.15 – 2.45 pm. Please get in touch to join the fun. . In the meantime, for more information on being part of this great and historic musical/theatre, or to get tickets, please contact Sue Hooper 01752 843073 – email suehcf@msn.com or Julian Barnicoat – email info@stillvoices.co.uk or Lynn Marsh 01752 844255.
