Hello

and welcome... ….to November’s edition of Love Saltash There is, believe it or not, a lot to be excited about, so don’t let the climate - globally, politically and just locally wet and windy - get you down. At the beginning of the month we have the fabulous Kalan Gwav, with local fireworks over Warfelton Field.

At the end of the month, you can sail down the Tamar to get the best view of Illuminate Festival, opening the Mayflower 400 Programme with a spectacular light festival in the Royal William Yard and Barbican Plymouth, and Mount Edgcumbe here in Cornwall.

Sarah-Linda Johnson is a qualified teacher of both mindfulness and the Alexander Technique. She offers mindfulness courses/ taster and refresher sessions in Saltash. Check out her timely article on preparing for Christmas on Page 28. For more information call 07875269915 or visit www. plymouthalexandertechnique.co.uk/

So, don’t forget to let your lights shine, get the decorations ready and polished and be ready to celebrate. We need a bit of brightness right now!

This year’s Kalan Gwav on November 2 starting at 4pm on Warfelton Field is once again brought to you by the same intrepid team, enabling Saltash to celebrate together, whatever the weather! Kalan Gwav, meaning the first day of winter in Cornish, is based on the traditional festival of Allantide, known elsewhere as Halloween and honouring the little-known Cornish saint St. Allan. Unlike Halloween Kalan Gwav doesn’t celebrate the dead but the apple as a sign of life and immortality. The celebrations include stalls to browse, perhaps to dabble in early Christmas shopping, games and competitions including the fast-paced excitement of the Wheelbarrow Races organised by the same genius Saltash team from Redeemer Church Plymouth that hosts the Saltash Regatta Cardboard Boat Race.

Enter online via the Kalan Gwav facebook page or simply show up on the starting line at 4pm – wheelbarrows, apple bobbing and hail bales provided! There is a touch of ceremony with some music, dancing and a wassail around the Saltash Beacon led this year led by dancers from the Geraldine Lamb Dance School. Schoolchildren are all invited to join in and bring pots and pans and whistles to make some noise to frighten off those evil Winter spirits led by the Guardian of the Apple, Roger Smith. Hot cinnamon doughnuts, mugs of hot chocolate, or flasks of something stronger, Hectic dancing to keep your feet from frostbite, and loads and loads of laughs for all the family. So wrap up warm, laugh in the face of the weather and join us for loads of fun and of course the all-important fireworks finale! If you’ve not yet experienced the apple magic that is the Kalan Gwav, don’t miss this year’s event on 2 November.

Community

Great News for the Tamara Estate housing needs of the community at that time. The room sizes and layouts as well as the way they were constructed and insulated were appropriate back then but standards have greatly improved these days and people expect better layouts, insulation and general living standards. They were built before car ownership was common which is part of the reason why the roads are narrow and there is not enough car parking. There are parts of the estate with underutilised spaces, unlit pathways, isolated and unobserved play areas. There are homes with steep narrow external staircases, damp problems and poor layouts such as downstairs bathrooms off kitchens. The Council would like to build modern, welldesigned homes to meet different family sizes. Currently the average sized home on the estate is significantly smaller than the national space standards for a new 2 bedroom home. They also want to make sure that homes don’t suffer from noise problems and to create safe communal spaces, making Tamara a place where people want to live and stay. Residents can record their views on the specially created web page https://www.tamaraestate.info/ the-future-for-our-homes/. Artists impression

Cornwall Council has been successful in getting funding from the Government’s Homes & Community Agency to undertake some feasibility work looking at ways to improve the Tamara Estate. The money will cover the early costs such as community engagement, initial planning and technical studies. Despite redevelopment plans being aborted over 20 years ago, the area has not been forgotten and there are architects impressions in place of what could be done. (see above). However Cornwall Council want to fully involve local people in any development, rather than decide on their behalf. (Never the best way!) They are hoping to gather a small team of 6 volunteers to make a Friends of Tamara group. This would be a balanced mix of Cornwall Housing tenants and home owners from across the estate. The volunteers could act as part of the project team, maybe visiting a housing regeneration development and representing the community as ambassadors. The estate was built in the 1930’s to meet the

SALTASH REMEMBERS Saltash has had a proud tradition supporting the many residents that have seen active service or been otherwise involved with the Armed Forces. It’s the inevitable result of being so close to a Naval Dockyard, attracting so many young men and women to join up. The Saltash & District Branch of the RBL is holding its Festival of Remembrance on October 26 at 7.30pm

with music from RWindband, St Stephens School Choir and Burraton Male Voice Choir. And there will of course be the traditional Remembrance Day services on Sunday 10 at 2pm, Wesley Church and Monday 11 at 11am, on Fore Street. There is also a more nuanced local tribute to all those men and women whose lives were cut short by war. Recently in Ashtorre Rock, the anthology of poetry that we have highlighted on our front cover this month was launched. “Saltash Remembers” was commissioned by the Saltash Great War Commemorative Events Committee and includes poetry and prose by young people from schools in Plymouth and Saltash as well as two First World War poets – at the launch Tony Marsh read out a poem by Alfred Lichtenstein, a German soldier. The publishing of the Anthology was the culmination of a project of events run by the Committee who commissioned local actor Andrew Blackwell, to inspire and challenge young people through two well known war poems, Rupert Brookes, “The Soldier” written in 1914

Close up of a hand painted pebble with all the romance of youth and optimism and “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfrid Owen with its great challenge to the patriotism and swagger that had held sway at the outset of the war. Andrew explains that the poetry anthology was conceived to offer an opportunity for a new generation to reflect on the sacrifices made by our forebears, and the resulting work definitely shows a sense of understanding and connection from the young writers to the plight of those on the Front Line. The Anthology was sponsored by Howton Solar Farm Fund in Cornwall and MVV Environment Devonport Ltd. As an Anglo-German company MVV explained that they sponsored this project for all of those, from all nations, who have lost their lives in conflict, adding, “our teams

there were also startling inaccuracies – there’s even a

In April 1941, on the worst two days of destruction that Plymouth had witnessed, Fire Crews from across the region, from as far as Newquay, were called in as volunteers to help manage the fire storm that had been caused as the result of the Blitz. Six Firemen from Saltash volunteered. One, my Grandfather, had already done a full day’s work but went with the young crew as an experienced trainer. He knew something of the harrowing scenes they were about to witness as he had been a veteran of WW1. Alas, all six were killed as the fire truck they were travelling in ran over an incendiary device in the road. I ran a campaign some years ago when it came to light that two of these men were not listed on any memorial, as I wanted to get their names added. However, the campaign was defeated when the costs demanded to alter an existing monument were estimated in their tens of thousands. Some good has come of this….and in the research that has followed it was revealed that there are astonishing omissions from our war memorials. Some families could not afford the cost of their loved ones’ names

12

story of one man who stood year on year to remember the dead opposite his local memorial, alongside the inscription of his own name. As an ex Royal Marine Commando, I have served in more recent conflicts alongside friends who have also lost their lives. I would dearly like to see a new memorial established in our Peace Garden to honour all those from Saltash who have died in war. I am hopeful that the passions aroused that caused so many of us to turn out on the street for last years Remembrance Parade would mean that we could show our sensitivity and compassion for our fellow citizens and their families in a practical and permanent way of remembrance. I am told a new memorial would cost much less than what was quoted to add a few names. And there is precedent – the original memorials were funded by old fashioned crowdfunding from donations from the community, which is comparatively simple to organise online now if there is someone who wishes to take up the mantle. Torpoint unveiled two new memorials to both service and civilian dead from WW2 recently from funding from its Council, RBL, Community Groups and affected families. If this has got you thinking, please do get in touch with your local Saltash Councillor as I am hoping to talk with them soon to see what can be done.

The Dangers of Leaving Loose ends can be avoided by Making a Will by Melanie Cotteril

It is always a sad time when a relationship or marriage comes to an end, especially when there are children involved. I am often approached by clients who have been through the trauma of a relationship Melanie Cotteril breakdown and they assure me they have properly dealt with division of all the financial assets following the separation themselves without the need for legal advice. Whilst this may at first glance seem a sensible thing to do, many people fail to consider the ramifications if the job is not done properly: Ask yourself this:• Have you notified your Pension provider of your change in circumstances to ensure your death in service benefit is not assigned to your former spouse or partner? • Have you ensured your death in service benefit can be paid to your children, and stipulated the age you would want them to benefit if that is what you want? • Have you named a guardian for your children if you die whilst they are still minors? • As your former partner or spouse will often still be entitled to your Pension benefit, have you assigned it to your children or new partner? • Did you know an estranged spouse or former spouse who has not remarried is entitled to make a claim against your estate under the Inheritance (Provisions for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and have you done all you can to prevent this from happening?

• Did you know if you are not formally divorced, and die without a Will in place, your estranged spouse will be entitled to the first £250,000 of your estate if you have children, or £450,000 if you have no children but parents or siblings survive you? It is equally as distressing for an unmarried partner from a long term relationship to call in to seek help to administer their late partner’s affairs where they have died without a Will. Having to tell the distraught loved one that their late partner’s estranged spouse is the person legally entitled to manage the estate and will inherit their assets is heart wrenching. My 17 years of experience in this area of law has taught me never to leave things to chance. Often agreements made between separating partners are made with the best intentions but do not cover all eventualities and can lead to unintended consequences. Why not contact me, Melanie Cotterill at Roper James to ensure you know what will happen and who you are protecting, should you die without having formally made your Will. Roper James are delighted to confirm, Teresa Cusson, an expert in Divorce and Family Law with 30 years of experience has joined our friendly professional team. FLYING HIGH A local lecturer is celebrating after successfully completing his journey to gain his Private Pilot’s license. Carpentry lecturer, at Cornwall College St Austell and Saltash, Roger Edgecombe, has “always found a need” to challenge himself “both mentally and physically”. “As a lecturer I feel it is good to put yourself in the student position to keep in touch with the feelings they go through as we teach them,” he continued. “I had always seen flying as inspirational and something other people could do but not me. Finally, as I approached my 60th birthday, I wanted a new challenge. It was then that I realised that the only thing stopping me from learning to fly was me.” Roger joined Bodmin Airfied, and after completing a series of training sessions over a few months Roger has now flown his final flight as a student. The final flight was his official general skills test, to determine that his flying skills were at a level sufficient for him to be granted a full Private Pilot

40

Licence, which allows him to fly solo, or with friends of his choice, on every future occasion. Roger said people will be surprised how far they can push themselves to achieve things they never thought they could. “The reward is an increased self-confidence and the excitement of knowing you are expanding your own experience,” he added. “While I had practiced the final assessment many times over the last eight months as I built my experience and flying time, it was challenging and the two hour assessment went very quickly.” “I now plan to continue flying and help others to experience the excitement of flying and seeing the fantastic Cornish countryside from the air.” Head of Department for Technology at Cornwall College St Austell and Saltash, Jamie Rowley, said the College is “proud of Roger’s ambition”. “He is always up for a challenge, and this is an excellent achievement when you consider that Roger only took up this personal challenge at the start of the year.”

Promoting positive mental health Students at Saltash Community School have been taking part in a wide range of wellbeing activities as part of their morning tutorial programme. Each week, students participate in structured activities to develop their character and resilience. Sessions range from yoga to animal therapy, from dance to de-stress techniques. One year 10 student commented on the programme, stating ‘It really helps me prepare mentally for the day ahead’. Another student in Year 9 said, ‘I’ve been able to try some new things I’ve never done before, like Yoga!’ The wellbeing mornings are an extension to the school support services. For example, the school

42

has a morning triage system which consists of local volunteer youth workers who offer advice to students who may need support. All students chose from a selection of wellbeing activities on offer and take part in the session once a week. Other mornings include sessions on building Character, assemblies focussing on British Values as well as learning activities to develop numeracy and literacy. Mrs Griffin, Deputy Headteacher, said ‘We are passionate about supporting the mental health of our students. We have worked hard to provide support services that meet the needs of our young people and respond to the areas identified within our community.’

ART AT ASHTORRE SALTASH PRESS GANG

Last month we featured the printing processes that Saltash Press Gang enjoy. This time we ask how to make sense of new images, however they were produced. What clues can help make a picture interesting, enjoyable or 'good'? One of the strengths of this study of a new Plymouth landmark by Richard Allman is the brash contrast between the sculptural form in what appears to be the foreground and the

Comment by John Forster

These two images, at first glance so different, both capture a moment or a character and tell us about the subject. Neither of them is realistic in the way of a photo, but each "tells us a story". Ellie Russell-Hsieh's tiny Bumblebee is blurry; the background appears smudged, but this helps convey the frenetic movement of the insect. This is no lab specimen but a living, buzzing bee. In Chris Waring's Racing the Tide, the sea and sky have become abstract patterns, but the organic vertical figures break into the rhythm and leap out.

These might be studio exercises, capturing shapes of things to hand, as many artists do daily in their sketchbooks. But see here how Chrissie Russell [above] and Jane Jones go beyond just

capturing the objects themselves. See how the elements are carefully arranged, not only the way they jigsaw together or overlay, but also the 'negative shapes', the apparently empty spaces, they create in between. Look again at all these artists' work at Ashtorre Rock until 29 November. Images Š the artists

Just Be News

Love a Coffee….. but which one? Latte… Flat White… Cappuccino… Americano…. Do you ever get confused about all the types of coffee available from specialist coffee shops? It is not surprising given that some cafés make coffees in different ways Coffee berries, the raw to others. At Just material Be we offer coffees in line with what we believe to be the most common styles. Here is a quick guide to what you should expect from each drink. Espresso: The purest extraction and the base for most contemporary coffees. A double shot without added water or milk. Strong and intense, with a balance of bitter, sweet and sour notes. Macchiato: As above with a layer of textured (foam) milk Cappuccino: A double Espresso shot with equal proportions of steamed milk and textured foam milk Flat White: As per cappuccino but with mico (less textured) foam milk

The perfect latte The size of the grind is critical to producing the right balance of flavours for the perfect coffee taste. At Just Be we check our grinder at least once per day to ensure the quantity and quality of the extraction is exactly as it should be. Our coffees are served at around 65 degrees. Deemed by the ‘experts’ as best for flavour. We do occasionally get asked for extra hot milk in the drinks and can always accommodate this request. We are delighted to be partnering with Extract coffee Roasters, based on Bristol, who not only provide us with outstanding quality of roasted beans but also offer support and training to our Baristas to make sure you get the best possible flavours consistently each day. It is also reassuring to know that through their direct purchasing of beans from farms around the coffee bean producing world, farmers, their families and communities are getting the best possible value for their wonderful product.

Latte: A double Espresso shot served in a bigger cup with more steamed milk and mico (less textured) foam Americano: A double espresso shot with added hot water to dilute the intensity and strength of a pure Espresso. Can be served with hot or cold milk on the side The coffees detailed above are all based on the Espresso shot: A way of extracting coffee via hot water forced through ground coffee at high pressure.

SIR ROBERT GEFFERY’S PRE-SCHOOL The children experience cooking on an open fire, climbing, den building and learn about the benefits of the woodland environment with some sessions planned within the National Trust Grounds of Antony House, Torpoint. All practitioners within the setting support the children’s emotional development through the practice of Emotional Coaching.

This enables

practitioners to support and nurture each child’s well-being and resilience enabling them to learn and develop within a calm but vibrant, rich and explorative learning environment. As early years educators we recognise parents/ carers as valued partners and first educators of their children. We value all children’s strengths, interests If you are thinking about giving the very young in your life a great start, we asked the staff at Sir Robert Geffery’s pre School what made them different. Here’s the response. “Our Preschool is set in the grounds of the main Primary school in Landrake. The setting is managed by an Early Year’s Professional (BA in Early Childhood Education). All fully qualified experienced staff are passionate about early years development and use the Early Years Foundation Stage document as a support tool to plan, observe and assess each child’s learning and development ensuring all their unique needs are met. All staff promote the Reggio Emilia Approach which values the importance of creativity within a child’s development and the importance of listening to a child thus giving them a voice in their own learning. A forest school practitioner (Level 3) plans weekly sessions which involve the importance of both risk and safety within the natural learning environment.

and learning styles so that they develop confidence, independence and self-esteem. We support their curiosity, creativity and desire to make sense of the world, giving time for their thoughts and ideas. Our preschool is set in the grounds of the primary school and we have access to our own immediate outdoor space for water play and our lovely train garden where the children take part in planting, roleplay, sand play and balancing activities. We also have access to the school playing field, farm and pond. We have our own forest school area with mud kitchen, den building and fire pit. All children experience wonderful minibus trips and whole group trips to places such as Antony House, Mount Edgecumbe, Looe Beach, Saltash Library, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Paignton Zoo, the Minature Pony Centre. And we are always looking for more great places to visit.” Wow! Makes you want to return to Preschool and start all over again!

SIR ROBERT GEFFERY’S PRE-SCHOOL As an early years setting we value and support each child’s potential to develop and learn. Encouraging exploration, expressiveness, curiosity and creativity.

We strive to provide the highest quality learning experiences for all children. Learning that is exciting, valuable, challenging and enjoyable. Sir Robert Geffery’s Pre-School School Road Landrake, Saltash Cornwall. PL12 5EA
