Nominations sought for BASH award

Plymouth police are inviting the community to nominate people with disabilities in the city who deserve to win an award.

The BASH (be active, be safe, be healthy) awards include seven areas based on being active, keeping safe and staying healthy. They will recognise the winning individual/s and runners-up for their positive achievements.

Winners will each receive an award and runners-up will receive a certificate.

The awards will be held on Thursday June 21 at the Future Inn Plymouth and nominations are open until May 28.

Diversity officer, PC Martin Whitehouse said: “I am aware that many people who live with disabilities overcome incredible challenges and the awards recognise just some of these. We are welcoming entries which help us celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities in Plymouth.”

Women on the march in Plymouth To mark the centenary of votes for women, around 100 placard-bearing women wearing sashes will be marching through Plymouth, some wearing period costume from the last ten decades.

The marchers will assemble at North Hill on Wednesday May 9 and will walk to Plymouth City Council Offices where they will be met by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Wendy Foster.

Plymouth Soroptimist Hilary Preston is organising the march and has compiled a list of 100 women who have achieved a ‘first’ during the last century. The list includes local notable names such as Lady Nancy Astor, Dame Aggie Weston and Dr Mabel Ramsay.

Hilary said: “We hope to get at least 100 women on the march who will each carry a placard with the name of one of the great female achievers from the last century. Period costume isn’t essential, but it will definitely add to the occasion! “ “I’d love to hear from any women who would like to join us on the afternoon of the march and ask that they ring me on 01752 267157 or 07817 209108 to get more details. As we’re putting on light refreshments at the council Office at the end of the march, we need to have an idea of numbers.”

A successful bid to the Government’s ‘Women’s Vote Centenary Grant Scheme’ means that a grant will cover the cost of sashes, placards and refreshments.

Plans for development of St Budeaux Library site revealed

Architect’s impressions of the new development

Plans for the redevelopment of St Budeaux Library have been submitted to city planners.

Plympton-based Land Developments (SW) have applied for permission to transform the half-acre site of the current library on St Budeaux Square.

As well as providing a light and airy library with a flexible space, the development will include 24 new homes, including four properties that are being designed to be wheelchair accessible.

A third of the 17 one-bedroom and seven two-bedroom flats will be affordable housing.

The plans allow for a total of 30 parking spaces, including five disabled bays.

The new library will offer a wide selection of books, free computer and Wi-Fi access, as well as events and activities for all ages.

The building will also be part of a citywide initiative providing easier access to health and wellbeing advice for people within their own neighbourhoods.

The project will cost over £2,300,000 with funding from the developer to progress the scheme as well as £187,000 from Government’s One Public Estate scheme.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “This scheme marks the start of the second phase of the Plan for Libraries.

“The plan was designed around changing lifestyles as well as future needs of our residents and one issue it highlighted was the need to invest in facilities in St Budeaux.

“We have been working hard behind the scenes to draw up plans which we also hope will add to the vibrancy of the local shopping centre in St Budeaux. “ The existing library is a post-war, single storey building in the centre of St Budeaux, close to local shops, services and facilities. It is popular and well-used, but is dated and inefficient in terms of running costs.

The redevelopment of the library is a key part of the Council’s Plan for Libraries, which was approved last July.

The Plan for Libraries 2017 to 2020 was subject to extensive consultation and aims to modernise the library service, so that more people can benefit from the range of services the Council provides.

Councillor Jordan added: “We are investing in new libraries, thinking about the longer term needs of our residents – not just access to learning but access to advice and support on how to stay healthy.

“What’s more we are enabling affordable homes to be built – we’re getting off the starting blocks on a really exciting scheme in an area that has not had investment for some time.”

If the planning process goes smoothly, the project could get consent by the end of June with the library scheduled to close before the site is handed over to contractors in the summer.

Popular Pirates Weekend is back again Avast ye! Pirates Weekend Plymouth is sailing back into the Sound.

Seadogs and landlubbers alike will be welcome at Pirates Weekend Plymouth on May 12 and 13 from 10am to 4pm.

The Barbican, Sutton Harbour and West Hoe Park will be a hive of activity as this award winning family event, organised and funded by the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, returns to the city.

The star attraction will be the two tall ships docked in Sutton Harbour - The Phoenix and the Grayhound – which are both free to climb aboard and explore. Visitors may recognise The Phoenix, a replica of an 18th Century Brig, from her starring roles in TV and film productions such as Poldark, Frontier and Taboo.

Back on dry land, street entertainers, sea shanty bands and puppet shows will entertain the crowds. Plymouth’s own Captain Jack Sparrow, Jonty Depp, will also be making an appearance alongside his arch-enemy Captain Barbossa, both big favourites with families as they wreak havoc around the quayside.

Sarah Gibson, Waterfront manager and chief executive for the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, said: “The fun-filled Pirates Weekend explodes into life this month as a major event in Plymouth’s fantastic annual events programme. We’ve grown the scale of Pirates Weekend this year, expanding entertainment across the Barbican, Sutton Harbour and West Hoe Park. It’s already extremely popular, attracting more than 17,000 visitors last

year and many told us it’s the best family Pirates weekend in the South West.

“It’s going to be a fantastic family day out, with plenty of free activities to enjoy, so if you haven’t been before, don’t miss out, come on out to Plymouth’s Waterfront and have some Pirate fun – just don’t forget your Pirate costumes for all the family!”

A Pirate Trail, sponsored by Sutton Harbour, will be running across the Barbican throughout the weekend, with treasure maps and code breakers available to buy from the Tourist Information Centre. It’s fun for all the family and every completed treasure hunt will win a small prize.

Other activities on offer for families include storytelling, arts and crafts sessions, a giant octopus soft play and the pirate-themed Treasure Island park at West Hoe Park.

For those interested in getting out on the water, Plymouth and Devon Schools Sailing Association will be running hourly raft building and introductory sailing sessions from the Commercial Wharf slipway, free of charge.

Swillyfest is returning after the success of the first event in 2014.

The free community event for the people of North Prospect will take place at the City Social Club in Merrivale Rd, Plymouth from 12 noon until late on Saturday June 9.

The day’s activities are designed to appeal to all ages with seven local bands - headlined by The Diamond Geezers Sumo wrestling, mechanical bull riding, tug of war, face painting and bouncy castles.

Hundreds of Swillyites, friends and families attended the last event and organisers want this year’s event to be even better and more memorable.

The City Social Club is a large venue with a huge enclosed garden area to the rear with great prices on food, wine, beer and spirits.

Conman: police warn residents in Devonport

Plymouth’s popular Freedom Community Festival is back in June and is set to be bigger and better than ever before.

The free community music festival takes place in Freedom Fields Park on Saturday June 2 and Sunday June 3.

The event will include some of the best in local live music, family friendly activities, stalls and some catering delights including the revamped community cafe.

The festival gives a platform to the South West’s talented performers and provides sound engineering students with live event experience that they cannot get elsewhere.

One of the organisers, Jonathan Spurling said: “Since it began the Freedom Community Festival has won the hearts and minds of thousands of people throughout Plymouth with it’s vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere and with every passing year, it goes from strength to strength.

“And that strength is largely due to the generosity of our many amazing volunteers and supporters who give up their precious time to help make our free event happen and give back to the City’s community.

Police have warned residents in the Devonport area to be on their guard against a conman who claims to be a window cleaner.

“We’re really grateful for all the help and support - including donations - we receive from local organisations, businesses and individuals. We are running a Crowdfunder appeal and other fundraising activities to help put on what has become one of the highlights of the summer calendar in the city.

“We’re organising a fund raiser at the B-Bar on May 6 from 2pm onwards and a local group are also putting on a gig at The Nowhere Inn later in the month to support the festival.”

Several local organisations will be running activities in the dedicated family area including On Course with family learning sessions, Scrap Store craft and junk workshops sponsored by Plymouth Community Homes and The Box history centre area.

There will also be Street Factory dance sessions and various family entertainment on the stage, which is being run by City College Plymouth.

Musical line up on stage

features some of the best local musical talent including Vince Lee, Paul Armer Band, Haunt the Woods, The Trees, Andy Quick Band, Joanne Cook, and many more. All the sound equipment is being provided by DBS and overseen by its music students.

The event officially kicks off at 12 noon on Saturday June 2. Alongside three stages of great live music, there will be plenty to keep everyone entertained - no matter what their age.

There will be everything from inflatables and craft activities to circus skills workshops and tasty local food suppliers and much more besides.

The themes for this year’s festival are LovePlymouth and LoveYourCommunity and as always organisers will be using the festival as an opportunity to celebrate the great city. In the run-up to the festival and over the weekend organisers will be encouraging people to take to social media and use the #LovePlymouth and #LoveYourCommmunity tags to celebrate all that’s good about Britain’s Ocean City.

A statement issued by Devon & Cornwall Police said: “A male has been attending addresses in the Devonport and Compton area of the city passing handwritten cards with JLH window cleaning, fascia and guttering, cleaning specialist together with a mobile contact number ending 435.

“He is calling himself Will and has either completed small jobs for a minimal fee and then returned to the address and taken money for work he has either not completed or not returned to the address.

“He will ask for money up front to pay for materials and then not return. He is described as early 20’s 5ft 8 to 6ft tall very thin with black wavy hair, a long neck and of mixed race appearance. He is driving a faded red older style car derived van If anyone has had any dealing with this male or should he attend your address please contact the police on 101 for non emergency or 999 in an emergency.

History festival at St Michael’s Church A special event is being held to mark the 175th anniversary of St Michael’s Church in Devonport.

The event takes place on May 12 between 10am and 4pm and is being staged as part of the programme of activities for Plymouth History Festival 2018. Visitors to the church in Albert Road will be able to inspect church registers and look for their past, meet the man who saw four Napoleons and find out how the church survived the Blitz and demolition.

Admission is free and refreshments are available throughout the day.

Gin Festival Plymouth 2018 Jun 29 Plymouth Pavilions The UK’s first, biggest and best gin festival is making it’s first visit to Plymouth and there’s going to be enormous variety of different gins. As well as the opportunity to try a huge variety of gins from all over the world (including exclusive gins you won’t see anywhere else), there will be live music, great food and a gin cocktail bar. There will also be gin masterclasses, and the opportunity to meet gin distillers in person, try free samples and chat about their gin.

Plymouth Armed Forces Day 2018 Jun 30 The Hoe Celebrate Plymouth’s proud military tradition at the annual Armed Forces Day, which this year will also be commemorating the RAF’s 100th anniversary. It will showcase the services with static and arena displays and parades. The exciting arena programme will return this year, with a highlight being the Field Gun competitions and the Parade of Standards will see cadets and veterans alike march across the Hoe Promenade. There will also be military vehicles, equipment and static helicopters on display to see up close as well as the opportunity to meet the Royal Navy, Army, Marines, RAF and veterans’ organisations in a variety of villages set out across the Hoe. Plymouth Model Show Jun 30 Plymouth Guildhall Come along to the annual scale model show. Two large displays will commemorate 100 years since WWI finished and also the centenary of the Royal Air Force. There will be static and radio control models, model railways and a variety of displays from South West model clubs and winner model clubs from Brittany. A model competition is also taking place during the day. The cafe sells hot and cold food and there will be a tombola running throughout the event.

What’s That Noise?

June 16 - July 6 Soapbox Children’s Theatre. 11am and 1.30pm. There is a squeak and a tantalising toot, a crisp crash and a hilarious hoot. Where does it come from? What does it mean? A whispered word and a scrumptious scream!

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

Festival of music and dance at Devonport Park

A festival of music and dance organised by the Real Friends Community Group and sponsored by the Devonport Park Pavilion Café will take place on the Bandstand in Devonport Park on Sunday June 10.

Starting at 11am the day will see a host of musicians from young to not so young and a varied genre of music and dance.

“We are absolutely delighted to organise this event in aid of the charity CLIC Sargent, Cancer and Leukemia in Children and young people, who do amazing work supporting families with children undergoing treatment,” said Priscilla Carroll, event organiser for The Real Friends group.

The long line up of those taking part include Saltash Community School, the One Night Stans, solo artists Sophie-Louise and Kracken, Plymouth Youth Concert Band with conductor Barrie Mills, the La La choir, MBC Harmony 60’s & 70’s music, Blasé Blues, Memory Lane country rock, Swingletree duo from Bath, and the fabulous dancers from Natasha’s Bollywood School of dance. The sound system for the event will be provided

by AJ sounds.

“As Devonport Park is also recognized as a dog-walkers park we are delighted that Woodside Animal Welfare Trust will be hosting a dog show,” said Priscilla.

The Star Troopers and Darth Vader also hope to make an appearance. Stephen Whitfield will run the Archery Assault Course.

Food and drink will be available all day at the Park Pavilion café.

“This is certainly a day not to be missed in our beautiful Devonport Park and we urge as many people as possible to come and support this event and help us raise as much funds as possible for CLIC Sargent,” said Priscilla.

“Uniting our communities through music is always our aim, and we hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Royal Navy submarine HMS Trenchant has broken through the ice of the North Pole with two US submarines to bring Ice Exercise 18 to an end.

A few weeks after punching through the ice off Alaska, the hunter-killer submarine emerged at the top of the world some 2,750 miles from – and 37 degrees Celsius colder than – her home base of Plymouth.

Trenchant joined the USS Connecticut and USS Hartford for the drills, co-ordinated by the US Navy’s Arctic Submarine Laboratory, and broke through the ice at the North Pole five times. The demanding trials are designed to test submariners’ skills in operating in the frigid climate of the Arctic Circle.

Minister for Armed Forces Mark Lancaster said: “This exercise shows that our Royal Navy is primed and ready to operate in the harshest conditions imaginable, to protect our nation from any potential threats.

“I was recently on board HMS Trenchant while she was under the ice and saw firsthand the skill and precision with which they worked alongside our US allies.”

The ice exercise allowed the submariners to test a range of equipment, notably sonar, against live ‘targets’ and to practice tracking and simulating attacks against other submarines.

“This ice exercise has been excellent and very well conducted. The Royal Navy operates all across the globe acting on behalf of Britain’s interests. That includes being able to successfully operate and conduct warfighting beneath the ice cap.

“It’s a vital skill which we have been honing over these last few weeks and I couldn’t be more proud of my sailors for their excellent work.”

Devon artist Peter Stiles will be exhibiting his work at Devonport Guildhall from July 24 to August 16.

The exhibition features an eclectic mix of images - from Plymouth Lido sparkling in the sunshine to charity shop windows, kitchens, hallways, waterfalls and rock pools. There are shaped canvasses including ovals and quarterfoils - both abstract and figurative.

He makes paintings that commemorate lost events and feelings by changing them into something else - a bit like planting a tree among the ashes of a loved one.

The paintings of his sink and washing machine were made after the death of a close friend who came back in order to clean his house from top to bottom while he slept (sadly only as a dream), another commemorates a half brother he didn’t know existed, but who only made contact six

Charity with a big heart is looking for new trustees

HeartSWell South West is a local heart charity, providing essential lifesaving defibrillators to communities, schools and business, as well as raising funds to purchase specialist cardiac devices for use in complex heart surgery.

HeartSWell also offer counselling and support services for individuals suffering with or affected by heart conditions. Over the years the charity has achieved some amazing results. The founders of HeartSWell successfully campaigned for cardiac services to be provided here in the South West and in 2001 HeartSWell Lodge opened its doors for the first time to provide accommodation for patients, carers and relatives to stay when travelling to Plymouth to undergo their treatment at Derriford hospital.

The Lodge now sees over 10,000 guests stay each year and the charity is looking to raise over £1 million to expand this facility further, to meet the needs of patients in the South West.

It is an exciting time for the charity as it embarks on a three-year plan to develop its services further and the charity is now looking for new trustees to join them on the journey.

The Trustee Board plays a vital role in steering and supporting the charity’s development and it is looking to broaden the board’s skill base, knowledge and networks, seeking people who can help the charity to think long term and strategically; who can motivate, support and challenge HeartSwell as it moves ahead.

Talks, walks and exhibitions Ford Park Cemetery’s current exhibition ‘Plymouth 1917 -1918’ continues until Thursday May 17 and is open for public viewing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm

On Wednesday May 9 at 7.30pm in the Victorian Chapel, popular speaker Dr Ian Hodgins will be giving a talk on ‘Prostitution in Victorian Plymouth’.

The cost of admission for this event is £3 and advance booking is advisable. To book tickets contact the office weekdays only (10am-3pm) on Plymouth 665442.

He will give his second talk of the month on Wednesday May 23 when the subject will be ‘Plymouth Hospitals and the Formation of the NHS.’ The venue and admission details are the same.

The heritage team will lead a free guided walk on Sunday May 13 entitled ‘Remarkable Women.’ They will visit the graves and give talks about some of the remarkable women buried at Ford Park. Meet at the Visitor Centre by 2pm.

The second exhibition ‘Celebrating 70 years of the NHS in Plymouth’ starts on May 19. The exhibition looks at how Plymouth came to terms with the formation of the NHS in 1948 to the present day, including information and pictures of several of the city’s original hospitals.

Again the exhibition is open for public viewing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Refreshments are available from the Visitor Centre cafe during these times.

On Sunday May 27 in conjunction with the NHS exhibition the heritage team will be leading a free guided walk. Meet at the visitor centre by 2pm.

From Monday June 4 until Friday June 8 volunteers from Ford Park will be running the coffee bar at Harewood House in Plympton from 10am to 2.30pm.

Last but not least on Saturday June 23, the team from Wild about Plymouth will be visiting to head up the annual Bug Hunt. The fun begins at 11am and continues until 1pm.

Bravery award for Devon & Cornwall Police control room worker

Julie Burgess, a resource deployment officer - sometimes known as a ‘dispatcher’ – for Devon and Cornwall Police has been honoured in the first national awards for staff who work in the control rooms of the UK’s blue light services.

Julie was recognised with a Special Recognition Award for Bravery and Courage in the APD Control Room Awards 2018.

The awards celebrate the extraordinary and selfless contribution of behind-the-scenes staff who play a critical role in response to emergency incidents day in and day out, often dealing with harrowing and distressing situations, in control rooms the length and breadth of the UK. Julie showed phenomenal bravery during an incident on her way home from work in the Force’s control room in Plymouth.

Chief Superintendent Glen Mayhew of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Julie was on her way home from the Force control room in Plymouth in January of this year when she saw a man on the wrong side of

the barriers of the Tamar Bridge.

“Julie parked her car safely on the bridge and climbed across the bridge infrastructure to access the pedestrian cantilever and return back to where she had seen the man.

“She spoke with the man and held on to him until officers arrived to bring him to safety. Her speedy response was key to saving a life.”

Chief Supt Mayhew is commander of the Devon & Cornwall Police and Dorset Police Alliance Operations Department.

He continued: “The police staff who work in our control rooms are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job, given the huge range of issues and incidents that they have to respond to and skills that they need.

“Julie’s exceptional conduct during this incident is a reflection of the high standards maintained by all of our control room staff and we are all extremely proud of her.”

Julie is trained as an ECC (Enhanced Crisis Communicator) who are used in their role to make contact via phone or text with people in crisis.

APD managing director Mike Isherwood, one of the Control Room Awards judges, said of contact centre and control room staff: “Their amazing work is normally hidden from public view, so we’re delighted that, working with our partners, we have been able to give them the recognition and profile they so richly deserve.”

Luke Pollard criticises train cancellations Plymouth MP Luke Pollard has raised concerns after CrossCountry cancelled trains to Plymouth due to recent bad weather.

He has written to the Secretary of State for Transport saying it is unacceptable that the current stock of CrossCounry trains are unfit to withstand all year round weather conditions at Dawlish and Teignmouth.

The engines on these trains has been known to short circuit when they are hit by the saltwater coming off the waves and sea spray. CrossCountry now starts and ends trains at Exeter when there is bad weather to prevent the Dawlish line being blocked by broken down CrossCountry trains.

The CrossCountry train franchise is shortly to be re-let and the Plymouth MP has asked the Secretary of State to require future franchises to buy new trains with the ability to cope with poor weather.

Current rolling stock lacks the capacity required to carry passenger demand and have a key fault that means they are unable to pass through Dawlish when the waves crash over the track at Dawlish and Teignmouth.

The letter also asked whether the current CrossCountry franchise holder Arriva are breaching provisions by failing to provide services to Plymouth and Cornwall due to the frequent service cuts due to bad weather.

Luke said: “Plymouth’s rail service was hit yet again recently as CrossCountry cancelled trains to the far south west due to waves hitting the track at Dawlish and Teignmouth. Plymouth is served by two train operators, GWR and CrossCountry and we need both fully operational to support our local economy.

“The cancellation of trains due to bad weather is growing increasingly unacceptable. We need urgent action from Ministers to ensure that these trains are replaced with new rolling stock that can survive weather all year round.

“It is embarrassing and damaging for our region that decades old Great Western Rail trains can get through Dawlish and the newer Cross-Country trains cannot in bad weather.”

He has spent four seasons at Truro FC and after going out on loan to Willand and Weymouth, broke into the team as first choice keeper in the current season.

His outstanding performances have earned him high praise from many quarters, including the Non-League Paper’s football pundit Scott Davies. He listed Tom as one of the three most promising players in National League South, tipping him as a potential Football League player.

It was Tom’s brilliant late penalty save against Hampton & Richmond which helped Truro to reach the first round of the FA Cup - with a lucrative tie against former Premier League club Charlton.

“I would never have dreamt as a kid that I would end up playing in goal at The Valley - a former Premier League ground. It was a boyhood dream come true in every sense,” said Tom. Truro became the first team from Cornwall to reach the first round of the FA Cup for nearly 50 years. “Although we lost 3-1, on another day we could have at least drawn the game,” said Tom, who made a number of crucial saves during the match.

Tom has also played a key role in helping Truro to a potential play-off place in National League South. Success in the play-offs would take Truro into the National League, one step down from the Football League.

“It’s been a great season for us,” said Tom,

“and it got better in April with the news that Cornwall Council voted to make £3 million available for the development of the Stadium for Cornwall.

Planning permission for the 6,000 capacity, multi-sport stadium has already been granted and the aim is to have it built before the start of the 2019-20 rugby and football seasons.

The Stadium for Cornwall will be used

by Truro FC, Cornish Pirates and Truro and Penwith College.

Tom told BBC Radio Cornwall: “The club’s got a great future ahead of it. We can start focusing on the promotion chase knowing the the stadium hopefully will start being built in the near future.”

This is a canny idea from Ray, who knows exactly who his customers are and what they’re looking for. He sells paraffin too, as well as Calor gas bottles. “It makes insurance companies a bit nervous,” he smiles.

As we talk, a customer collects his post – a one-off friendly service Ray provides for him. Fifteen minutes later the same customer returns with some fresh Pollack, which Ray declines on the grounds of being the only fish eater in his family. Old school shopping experiences here.

The building is a former ‘shippon’ (an old barn or cattle shed) used for horses. It predates the surrounding Victorian houses by a century, built when the Rising Sun was three cottages attached to a farm.

It had a few uses during three centuries until in the 1950s the Read sisters opened up Reads DIY, and after one change of owners in the 60s, Ray took on the business in 1988.

Nowadays, as one of the few traditional hardware stores, Reads has earned strong loyalty from customers. One of them wrote to the Chronicle to ask us to feature the shop because, in his words, “… the range of stock he holds in that small store is incredible, likewise the knowledgeable advice he gives. Whether it is painting and decorating, gardening supplies, tools for the job – he frequently has it in stock and if not he

promises 24 hour delivery.”

Yes, we checked and no, he’s not related!

Once inside, the more you look, the more you see, everything from curtain hooks to step ladders, nuts and bolts to machine tools, garden supplies, paints and brushes, electrical goods, kitchen wares and pet supplies.

“Have you a packet of cat worming tablets?” was a query that made me think the customer was in the wrong shop, until Ray went rummaging in the shelves to find some. Like the man said, Reads DIY probably has what you need.

Reads also offers a range of handy services: dry cleaning, shoe repairs, engraving, key cutting, tool sharpening, watch battery replacement … Ray didn’t mention mechanic services but it wouldn’t be a surprise – he’s also a keen petrol head (his words) with some classic cars.

Ray seems relaxed and happy in his chosen work. “I’m mortgage-free, no shareholders to please, just me and Adrian (his semi-retired right hand man) – so I can keep my costs right down. It was a fight in the early days of the big DIY stores, but now I can easily compete on price.”

So, is competition from the range offered in the chain stores a problem? “Not at all. Sometimes they send people to me for things they don’t stock – I can usually get it off the shelf, or at least find and order what they need from those 50,000 products in here.”

He taps a well-worn trade catalogue, and you get the feeling he doesn’t worry about competition from online retailers, either. Why should he, when he can give his customers next day delivery with friendly knowledgeable service?

On the way out we pass by some more alcoves, floor to rafters full of cleaning products, roofing felt, bags of coal, wellies, some shoe horns and a back scratcher. Outside, as we try to take a photo, dodge the traffic and beat the rain, he stands by displays of plug plants and other gardening delights, an old-fashioned shopfront for an old-fashioned DIY store that’s loved by customers. Here’s to another 30 years.

Youngsters enjoy visit by feathered friends Children and parents at the St Boniface Preschool in St Budeaux had some special feathered visitors when Julie from the Devon Birds of Prey Centre visited.

The visit was inspired after observing the children watching the birds feed from the birdfeeder, set up in a tree in the outside area of the preschool.

Julie brought with her a female American Kestrel named ‘Dink’, who can apparently see a newspaper headline from approximately a mile. She also brought ‘Willow’, a 20-year-old Andrew Bray (right) is taking over from Steve Bowen

The children learnt about the feeding habits of the birds and how they hunt for their food.

Both children and parents were able to experience holding the birds, wearing a falconry glove, and although the children were unable to touch the birds, due to the protective oil on them, they were able to feel feathers, which Julie had brought with her.

It was a unique experience for the children, parents and staff.

Andrew takes the helm for Stoke STARS Stoke STARS - the the traders and residents association for Stoke Village and the Blockhouse Park - has a new chair.

The reins of leadership were passed from Steve Bowen to Andrew Bray at the recent annual meeting of the association.

Andrew is a local boy having been born and bred in Stoke and moved back a few years ago to live locally. He had been involved in the set up of STARS but had stepped back to concentrate on work commitments.

Steve also continues to be involved as an active member and is looking forward to progressing plans to see the Blockhouse Park brought back to full community use.

The event takes place on July 21 and will see a section of Masterman Road lined with stalls, alongside a full day of street entertainment, bringing the village truly into Blockhouse Park. Blockhouse Park will have more stalls, inflatables, live music and entertainment, as well as a dog show run by Gables. Blockhouse Community Centre will be running a tea room for the day.

It promises to be a fun filled day raising the profile of Stoke Village and Blockhouse Park.

Sign up for Bubble Rush and support Children’s Hospice South West

Fundraisers from Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) are excited about the return of the Bubble Rush to Plymouth this year. The event will take place on Sunday September 23 at Newnham Park.

Bubble Rush is a 5km, foam filled, sponsored fun run where participants run, jog or walk through different coloured bubble stations getting covered in foam of all colours along the way.

CHSW brought the event to Plymouth for the first-time last year and 1200 people took part raising £40,000 in sponsorship for the charity that supports children with life limiting illnesses and their families through its three children’s hospices.

All ages can take part in Bubble Rush making it the perfect event to get family, friends or colleagues signed up for.

Kiley Pearce, events fundraiser for CHSW said “We are really excited about bringing

the Bubble Rush back to Plymouth after the success of the first event last year.

“Bubble Rush is great fun to take part in with your friends or family and is a fantastic way of helping us to raise vital funds for our hospices which support children and families in your local community.”

Students’ hair-raising creations City College students have been drawing inspiration from the recent bouts of extreme weather to create ‘hair-raising’ hair styles for the 2018 Hair Show.

The annual event challenges hair and beauty students to create and design looks to present on the catwalk to a panel of special guest judges.

From blustery barnets, to windswept wigs, the students were out to impress local industry experts: Kirsty Smith, fashion programme leader at Plymouth College of Art; Robin Bowler, senior stylist and owner of Bowlers Hairdressing and Nick Evangelista, of Nick Evangelista Hair and Beauty.

There wasn’t a single case of Seasonal

Affective Disorder in sight as the students’ creations elicited many oohs and aahs from the crowd. The guests were also treated to live dance and music performances.

City College’s academy manager of Hair and Beauty, Tanya Head, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and apprentices to demonstrate their creativity to the public and representatives from our region’s hair and beauty industry.

“The event was a great success and I am incredibly proud of the work they all produced - they blew the roof off.

“We couldn’t have done it without support from the performing arts, music, live events and catering students; they really brought the show together. This event truly

showcased what these young people can do.

I am sure they will all have successful careers ahead of them.”

Over the two-night showcase a number of students were awarded for their creative creations. This year’s winners included: Level 2 apprentices Lucy Woodcock (first place) and Brittany Partridge (second place); Level 3 apprentice Robyn Minns (first place); full and part-time Level 2 students Erin Osborne (first place) and Doaa Shayea (second place); and part-time Level 3 students Steph Tweedie (first place) and Tira Ashton (second place).

Business is booming for online materials company

An old bread factory in Plymouth is being brought back-to-life as online business, Construction Materials Online, takes up residence in new premises.

The rapidly growing parent company of Roofing Superstore, Drainage Superstore and Insulation Superstore, currently based at Airport Business Centre in Estover, has brought forward a move into its prestigious new facilities at Burrington Estates ahead of schedule.

Having outgrown its current offices, plans were made to re-locate to the new premises mid-summer 2018. But with more customers came a need for more stock and a bigger warehouse.

This led to part of the team moving into the new location early.

Construction Materials Online’s operations director, Callum Tasker, explained: “We have increased our range of products stocked and the

volume of stock due to customer demand, so it became urgent to get into the new warehouse as early as possible.

“Whilst there’s still work ongoing in preparation for the complete office move, we were able to accelerate things to get the distribution area ready sooner. It’s no mean feat organising a commercial move like this, but I’m pleased with how smoothly it’s gone, and the dispatch team are excited and raring to go in their gleaming new warehouse!”

Construction Materials Online collected the keys to its new Burrington Estates premises in January. It will now benefit from 15,000 square feet of warehouse – more than triple its original 4,500 square feet.

The next phase is completing works to the offices, which will house the rest of the company. This includes each superstore’s team of expert customer service advisors, which set the company apart from

other online building merchants.

Construction Materials Online is keen to create a dynamic new work space for its staff, and is working with local company Broadbase, the designers behind the Guardian’s offices to deliver its vision. Staff will permanently take up residence in Burrington Estates in summer 2018.

Project to fund rehab centre in Uganda

A crowdfunding project has reached its £10,000 target to build a new facility in Africa for people with chronic lung disease.

Academics from the University of Plymouth are leading the project to build a pulmonary rehabilitation centre in Kampala, Uganda – which will help to train medical professionals and treat people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) from across the continent. COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide.

Asthma and COPD are common the world over and, in the west, most often treated through the use of inhalers.

But in Uganda, these treatments are expensive and seldom available, even if they can be afforded.

The pulmonary rehab set to be delivered at the centre is an evidencebased intervention that does not involve drugs. Groups of patients undergo rehabilitation in a six-week twice weekly programme of exercise and education.

Research at the University of Plymouth, led by Dr Rupert Jones and funded by Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust and UK Government Department for International Development, has shown that rehab worked extremely effectively in Uganda to improve symptoms, social isolation and return to productivity.

Dr Jones, part of the University’s Institute for Translational and Stratified Medicine (ITSMED), explained the importance of the work and the need to fund it quickly.

He said: “Rehab is very effective in reducing breathlessness, improving social engagement, and reducing dependence. In many patients, rehab is life transforming.

“Sadly, for the many patients who want to do rehab, since the research has stopped, there is nowhere for the rehab to take place.

“We plan to build a bespoke centre for pulmonary rehab in Mulago Hospital in Kampala. The centre will act as a permanent National Centre for performing pulmonary rehabilitation and for training staff from across Africa to conduct rehab to the highest standards.

“Our research has shown how effective the treatment is, and we only had one month to raise £10,000. Every single penny will help us to build a centre to treat a neglected group of patients who are suffering from a devastating disease without treatment.”

Breakwater Bash is a huge success for Mayflower Offshore rowers

Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club’s Breakwater Bash was a great success especially for the club as it won three of the four categories.

The club won the Ladies 8Km, Mens 8Km and Mixed 4Km and also had a second in the Masters 4Km race. It meant Mayflower also won the overall Bash Trophy!

Clubs from Exmouth, Teign Scullers, Welsh Sea Rowing Association and three single scullers from Dorset took part.

The weather was extremely hot with only a light breeze but crews did have to cope with a five minute downpour!

The 8K course involves a course out to the Breakwater with the 4K race around Drake’s Island. The event was sponsored by Jolly Jacks and Mayflower Marina.

The Breakwater Bash was the second of an eight regatta season which takes club members around South Devon. In June the club is travelling to Cork for a 28K race and will also take part in the Welsh Open in September.

The club has high hopes as they have the current Ladies British Champion Fiona Carmichael, who is also ranked 13th in the world. Four other crews have world rankings, two of which are ranked third in Great Britain.

City unveils second commemorative plaque in honour of First World War hero

The second of four commemorative paving slabs dedicated to Plymouth and Devonport-born soldiers who received the Victoria Cross for their courage during the First World War has been unveiled on the Hoe. The slab is located near the Plymouth War Memorial, at the junction of Citadel Road and Lockyer Street and is in memory of Captain John James Crowe VC (28 December 1876 to 27 February 1965).

Crowe was born in Devonport. His father John was a soldier who was garrisoned at Raglan Barracks.

His mother, Catherine (née Turpin), was born and raised nearby at Cherry Garden Street.

Crowe followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Worcestershire Regiment (amalgamated in 2007 with the Cheshire, Staffordshire and Sherwood Foresters Regiments to form the Mercian Regiment). By August 1914 when the First World War began, he was in France with the British Expeditionary Force.

Having survived many hard fought actions, it was for ‘valour and zeal…of the highest order’ in the defence of the Belgian village of Neuve Eglise, also known as Nieuwkerke, that Crowe was awarded the Victoria Cross.

On 14 April 1918, he showed ‘…an utter disregard of danger…’ and led two small parties in successful attacks on enemy machine gun and sniper positions.

The commemorative slabs are part of a national initiative from the Department for Communities and Local Government to honour Victoria Cross recipients from the First World War and are being laid in the birth places of all those awarded the Victoria Cross during the conflict.

Argyle players back RNLI Mayday campaign Plymouth Argyle players are calling on people in Plymouth and the south west to support Mayday, the RNLI’s annual fundraising day

The RNLI’s Mayday campaign began on May 1 and will run for the whole month, with fundraising events taking place across the south west. This year, the RNLI hopes to raise £750,000 through Mayday, which will be used to fund essential kit for the charity’s brave volunteer lifeboat crews.

To kick off the campaign, members of the Plymouth Argyle team have shown their support by swapping their football boots for the RNLI’s iconic yellow wellies.

In addition, one of Plymouth’s most celebrated landmarks, Smeaton’s Tower turned yellow at sunset on May 1, in support of the Mayday fundraising campaign. The lighthouse will make a striking sight after dark, an unmissable reminder to residents and visitors alike to ‘do your bit, fund our kit’ and help to fundraise this May. Plymouth Argyle’s captain, Gary Sawyer urged the public to support the RNLI’s Mayday campaign: “As football players our training is pretty gruelling – we’re always pushing ourselves to the max in all kinds of weather conditions, but at least we know when we’re expected to perform!

“That’s why I have so much respect and admiration for the volunteer RNLI crew members as they drop everything in an instant to respond to a distress call to go out on a rescue, no matter what. The photo shoot has been fun although there is a serious message, so I’m asking everyone to help this amazing charity continue its essential lifesaving work by supporting them this Mayday.’

Fundraising events are taking place right across the south west,

many with a yellow welly theme in a nod to the lifesaving kit that RNLI lifeboat crew members wear on their feet when saving lives at sea.

Money raised through Mayday will help RNLI lifeboat crews to face the harshest conditions at sea with the best kit possible. It currently costs £1,598 to provide one all-weather lifeboat crew member with all of the kit needed when responding to the call for help.

A recently-announced partnership with global brand Helly Hansen will see all-weather lifeboat crews supplied with new kit later this year, providing better endurance levels and greater freedom of movement for the charity’s crew members.

RNLI fundraisers across the country will also be joining Smeaton’s Tower and the Argyle players in going yellow for Mayday – just like volunteer crews do every day to save lives at sea.

Popular musical ‘9 to 5’ at Devonport Playhouse Plymouth-based No Walls Creative Arts are back with the fun, feisty and female empowering musical ‘9 to 5’ following the success of their previous production ‘Into the Woods.’

With music and lyrics by the acclaimed Dolly Parton herself, this musical sees three female office workers, revolt against their arrogant, misogynistic boss, and take control of the office.

The cast will be ‘punchin’ in’ at the Devonport Playhouse on Wednesday May 16 through to Saturday May 19. Performances will begin at 7.30pm each evening with a matinee on Saturday beginning at 2.30pm.

No Walls Creative Arts are a theatre and arts company local to the Plymouth and Saltash area.

Founded by industry professionals Sam Pomeroy and Mark Sidey, it strives to promote the arts and aims to make theatre more accessible within

local communities. Since their debut musical, Stephen Sondheims’s ‘Into The Woods’, last year, No Walls Creative Arts have worked with the University of Plymouth’s Musical Theatre Group on their inaugural pantomime which was written and directed by Sam Pomeroy and their latest production Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

The team’s involvement and dedication to other local theatre companies demonstrates No Walls Creative Art’s philosophy of making the arts accessible and appealing to wider audiences.

The cast of ‘9 to 5’ is hugely diverse and involves people from all different kinds of employment; those who work 9 to 5 and those who don’t!

A new partnership between Mount Tamar Special School in St Budeaux and the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) will offer students with complex needs tailored visits to assist with their learning and development.

Students from Mount Tamar, aged between five and 16 will visit the NMA via a series of scheduled sessions. Led by the NMA’s Discovery and Learning team, the students will have the opportunity to discover more about art, science and technology, as well as learn about the many marine animals that reside at the Aquarium and the marine environment.

In addition to scheduled visits, the NMA will provide a respite drop-in service for students, allowing them to visit the Aquarium at any time during the day, to take a break from their school surroundings.

Research conducted by the NMA, in partnership with Plymouth University and the University of Exeter, found that people who spend time watching aquariums and fish tanks could see improvements in their physical and mental wellbeing. Providing a calming and relaxed atmosphere, the peaceful surroundings of the NMA’s exhibits and marine life will be the ideal getaway for students to unwind and focus on their learning.

Nicola Murray, head of Discovery and Learning at the National Marine Aquarium, said: “As an educational charity, we’re delighted to partner with Mount Tamar Special School to offer students a unique learning experience. The NMA provides a stimulating setting for any child to learn in, we hope it will also create a calming and relaxed environment for students with learning disabilities to allow them to focus on their learning. The addition of students being able to drop into the Aquarium when they’re not having such a good day will be of real value to them, as well as their teachers.”

Support for veterans, staffed by veterans The Veterans Care Navigation Service, run by Improving Lives Plymouth, provides support for those who have left the military - recently or many years ago - to choose and access services that best meet their needs. The staff and volunteers are themselves veterans, and the team is headed up by Bill Jennings and Jo Brokenshire, both ex-Royal Navy.

Jo served for 17 years, until she was medically discharged in 2015. She had injured her shoulder coming down a ship’s ladder and in spite of treatment did not recover enough for service.

“I left the Navy on good terms,” says Jo, “but after my final medical board, when I was told I would be discharged, the support I had received from the Navy just stopped. At first I didn’t know where to go for help.”

This is something Jo finds that many veterans encounter. “ They have lived in a routine for years where most things are provided.

Many of them simply don’t know how to find what’s available to help them, or even that there is help available in the first place.”

Jo was fortunate in that she was supported by her husband, also in the Navy, and she was able to adjust to civilian life more easily.

She saw her current role advertised on Facebook, and although she did not need a job, she applied and was successful at interview.

“I wanted to do something to help other veterans to get the help they need. I’d found support myself but so many people just don’t know where to start; I wanted to be part of making that better.”

Many ex-service personnel face additional barriers to getting help. “Lots of them don’t

see themselves as veterans, which they are.

And they don’t like to ask for help, they think it’s for someone worse off than them, which it isn’t – there’s help for anyone who has left the services.

“We open their eyes to things that are available, we give them their options and support them to get going,” says Jo. “People don’t like coming into an office sometimes, so we’ll meet them at home, or out for a coffee. I spend a lot of time at Costa. Rather than a formal interview, we just talk, and in the course of that we generally find out what people are struggling with.

“From there, we can point them in the right direction and support them as they work it through.”

Veterans Care Navigation helps people to identify what their needs are, and gives them information so that they can choose for themselves what help they access.

The team can refer to a range of specialist

support organisations, and they can advise on issues like benefits and grants for essential items and home adaptations.

If you are a recent leaver or have been out of the military for some time you can contact them to get the support you need. The support available includes: • Information, advice and signposting for veterans and their dependants.

• Support for veterans and their dependants to navigate and choose services that best meet their needs.

• Work with partner organisations to deliver the required support.

• Assessments of need and support plans developed with you.

• Outreach work in various community settings.

Get in shape for the big race Thousands of people have signed up for Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on Sunday May 20.

Ahead of the event Plymouth Marjon University will be running (pun intended) a preparation workshop for the event. The workshop is particularly aimed at inexperienced runners, but the content will also be relevant and useful for experienced runners.

The workshop aims to help participants to finish the half marathon, perform well, and enjoy the experience. The workshop will be delivered by sport science and psychology experts, using the latest research, and it will cover: • Mental preparation, including setting goals and managing nerves

Dive into fun at Royal William Yard from May 6, where a new family-friendly attraction will be waiting to meet visitors. Emerging from the harbour to take pride of place on the lawn, the Giant Squid will be there to stay for the summer.

This vivid-red, epic sea creature is a striking, acoustic installation, by an award-winning European art collective.

Truly interactive, families can speak into the tentacles and eyes of the sea creature, which carries the sound into the centre of the structure.

Crossing the ocean from its original birthplace of the Azores in Portugal, the Giant Squid was originally inspired by mythical landscapes and magical tales like Moby Dick and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. These tales influenced artistic collective, Moradavaga, who designed the sea creature, to serve as both a piece of public art and a communicative tool for children and families.

The fun doesn’t stop with the Giant Squid this summer; to further capture the imagination of visitors, families can hunt for the squid’s six friends by following a trail around the Yard. Playing with the Giant Squid and taking part in the trail are both free activities.

Designed by illustrator Jack Viant; graduate from Plymouth College of Art, explorers receive a map and passport to find the Giant Squid’s six friends. Once located, adventurers must make a note of the letter each creature is holding and use it to spell out a six-letter word. On completion of the trail, armed with the secret six letter word, participants can then make their way to any of the cafés or restaurants to claim their prize.

To help spread the word of the arrival of the Giant Squid, visitors can also capture their Squid selfies, sharing them on Facebook and Instagram, using the hashtag #squidfie, while also getting involved in naming the Giant Squid by visiting www. royalwilliamyard.com/giantsquid to submit suggestions.

During the last few months of her life, Dot received care from St Luke’s and spent her last few days at the specialist unit at Turnchapel. Seeing first hand the dedication and compassion of the team there meant St Luke’s gained a special place in Cuz’s heart, which has spurred him on to raise an incredible £90,000 through Rockfest for the charity.

Cuz said: “I’m blown away at how generously everyone has supported Rockfest, from the bands and the venue to the businesses who donated raffle prizes

and everyone who came to the event. A huge thank you to everybody who has gone the extra mile, including my wife Lyn and close friends.”

“It’s absolutely fantastic to have raised this record amount for St Luke’s in our tenth year, bringing our total to £90,000.”

Receiving the cheque from Cuz, St Luke’s community and events fundraising manager Nina Wearne said: “Cuz works tirelessly to make Rockfest the big success it is.

“We’re so grateful as the money raised makes a real difference, helping us to continue providing specialist end of life care across the community, at home, in hospital and at our specialist unit.”

Routeways Centre is a Plymouth Charity supporting children, young people and their families to overcome disadvantage.

First established in 1997 the charity continues to support families in Plymouth to overcome disadvantage. They provide services from the Beckly Centre in Plymstock and Devonport Park Activity Centre.

Routeways offer inclusive, challenging activities: horticulture, outdoor education (moor/gorge walking, rock-scrambling), cooking, crafts, creative play etc to promote physical and mental well-being.

The organisation relies heavily on donations, grants and gifts to keep its services running and an amazing team of volunteers have set themselves a personal challenge… they are training hard to get ready for Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on May 20.

They are running to raise funds to help Routeways support more families and to widen the range of activities they offer, at the Devonport Park Activity Centre. Although based in Devonport the charity supports families from all over Plymouth.

The dedicated team running the half marathon are: Dave Williams sons regularly attend activities at the Devonport Park Activity Centre. Dave said “I’m running the half marathon in Plymouth in May to raise funds for Routeways. This organisation helps support disabled children and their families. This includes weekly clubs and much needed adventure days out during the holidays to give families a break…This is not going to be easy for me as I have only just started training and have been sat on my bum for years” Jade Wall is also running the half-marathon, although she struggles with her training regime we know her determination and drive will get her Mount Pleasant pub for a meal. £2 for members and £3 for non-members. Work of young artists on display The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor, Wendy Foster, has officially opened Plympton Rotary’s annual Young Artist Exhibition and Young Photographer Competition taking place in the Embarkation Lounge of Brittany Ferries at Millbay Docks.

As in past years, a mix of art and photographs are on show throughout the month of April.

The work on show has been created by schoolchildren from all over Plymouth with the public able to vote for their favourite by picking up a voting slip on-site.

Kevin Brown who oversees the Youth Activities for Plympton Rotary said: “This is one of our club’s favourite annual events when we can applaud the talents of our Plymouth pupils and allow a wider audience to appreciate their skills and creativity.

The images on show were part of the local heat of the national Rotary Young Photographer Competition with the judges having a very tough time picking a winner.

Knitters raise over £1000 for charities

The Lions Club of Plymouth held their annual sponsored knitting event at Emmanuel Church with a total of 54 accomplished knitters competing for the much cherished trophies.

The ladies were knitting squares which, when completed, will be made up into various sized blankets and throws and distributed to hospitals and homes throughout the area.

Trophies and prizes were awarded to the person knitting the most squares in a given time period, with an additional trophy presented to the person attracting the most sponsorship.

The ladies were treated to tea and biscuits on arrival, a pasty lunch followed by jelly or trifles and a quick talk given by representatives of the two main charities benefiting from the day: John Branch from Diabetes UK and from Mrs Marie Hull of the local bereavement counselling service.

During the afternoon, tea/coffee and cake were served, followed by the presentations of awards by Lion President Ian Hill.

The contest for the most squares completed was a closely run competition with the top three contestants having completed eight squares each. The rows and stitches were taken into account on the last unfinished squares and by a close number, the first, second and thirds places were awarded respectively to Wendy Thorpe, Marcia Walters and Elaine Cook.

In addition to the trophies each was awarded with a box of chocolates and flowers.

The knitter who attracted the most sponsorship is yet to be announced once all the sponsorship forms and monies have been returned, but the total is expected to be in excess of £1,000.

The Lions gratitude goes to all who took part and to the individual sponsors.

Experience The background image on my laptop is a painting

by William Holman Hunt called ‘The Light of the World’. This pioneer of the Pre-Raphaelite community of artists was renowned for his attention to detail in his paintings and ‘The Light of the World’ demonstrates this superbly.

In this painting Jesus Christ stands, with a lamp in his hand, at an old wooden door surrounded by a thicket. It illustrates God in Christ knocking at the door of the spiritual heart of mankind. Based on Revelation 3:20: ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.’ According to Hunt: “I painted the picture with what I thought, Chris Cole unworthy though I was, to be by Divine command, and not simply as a good subject. The door in the painting has no handle, and can therefore be opened only from the inside, representing the obstinately shut mind.” Hunt, 50 years after painting it, felt he had to explain the symbolism.

Why we need knowledge and wisdom to face life’s ups and downs

BY CHRIS COLE, FOUNDER OF CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH I have a responsibility as a human being and as a Christian for the choices and decisions I make.

Without the freedom of choice to open the door of my heart to the knocking of God’s call, I will never find the reality of the ongoing experience of faith, hope, love and a deepening relationship with God. As essential as all three components of the spiritual journey are, the greatest of these is love and love is more than a feeling it is a way of life.

It is this process of faith hope and love that takes us on a spiritual journey which can prove faith in the same way that rational thinking can prove scientific evidence.

Faith can be proven in an individual’s attitude and character and observed through the good and tough times of a believer’s life.

We need the balance of knowledge and wisdom to go through the ups and downs of life and wisdom is a foundation for life out of which come the deep issues of the meaning of life and the enduring values of our humanity.

How do we handle the tough stuff of life? How do we love those who disagree or take offence at us? The answer may be through

a genuine life of true faith. We can become increasingly secure in God’s love and relational intimacy so that we end up living before the audience of One. We become a servant of all, but no man can rule over us.

For many people within the Christian faith the Book of Proverbs 4: 23 -24 talks about the issues of life coming out of the heart. This is of course the spiritual heart of mankind.

Where the genesis of faith, hope, love, courage and meaning are birthed. ‘Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put devious speech far from you.’

What we think and say can tear down and destroy people and we need to be conscious of not judging others lest we ourselves are judged with the same motive.

We don’t know people’s stories or painful journey through life, which is why God says he puts the broken in families, which many church communities endeavour to become.

A wise person once said. “If you find a perfect church, don’t join it because you’ll ruin it.”

However, God says in Matthew 5: 43 ‘Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.’ Quite a tension to hold, but one that can bring us to peace?
