Children keeping fit and getting fed this summer in Plymouth
Fit and Fed, the great holiday activity and food programme, is running in Plymouth this summer holiday to support families with children who receive free school meals.
Organisations across the city are supporting the programme, giving children the chance to take up activities at Plymouth Albion RFC, Plymouth Raiders and the Life Centre, to name a few. Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Fit and Fed provides a safe and fun environment for children to experience a wide range of amazing activities including arts and crafts, sports and dance. Every child also receives a healthy nutritional meal or packed lunch each day. “We are pleased to be able to provide the programme thanks to funding secured by the Council from the Department for Education. We were one of just 11 national projects awarded a grant to coordinate free holiday activities and healthy food for disadvantaged children this summer and the only successful bid in the South West.” There are over 45 free clubs taking place across the city, however spaces have already started booking up. New exhibition at Ford Park to focus on city’s youth
West End Carnival brings family fun to city centre this summer The West End Carnival is returning to the city centre on Saturday August 31, as part of a joint celebration for the 60th Anniversary of Plymouth Market.
After the success of last year’s event, this year will be even bigger and better, with a packed programme of live music, street entertainment and family friendly activity. As well as being a fantastic free day out for the whole family, it’s also an opportunity to explore the great range of independent shops in the West End, which will be running a variety of special offers throughout the day. Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company who run the event, said: “We are delighted to team up with Plymouth Market to put on such an exciting free event. “We have a day-long programme of live entertainment and we want people from far and wide to come and see what a great community we have here in the West End and some of the changes we have made to bring
Ford Park Cemetery’s new exhibition will focus on youth organisations in Plymouth, including Scouts, Guides and similar groups.
The exhibition will run from July 27 to September 15 and will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Instead of the usual walk in conjunction with the exhibition, the Heritage Team will be holding a ‘Young Persons Day’ on August 4 when they will invite young people into Ford Park to enjoy various activities, including circus skills, orienteering, puzzle trail, headstone rubbing and pebble painting. All the activities are free, although donations are always welcome. The fun begins at 12.30pm and refreshments will be available from the Visitor Centre. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. A concert to raise funds for Ford Park Cemetery featuring Mad Dog McRae is taking place at the Railway Social Club in Pennycomequick on August 2 at 8pm. Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased in advance from the cemetery office on Plymouth 665442 (weekdays only) from 10am-3pm.

more colour and vibrancy to the streets.” There will be live music from bands including Joey The Lips and a Beatles tribute act on the main stage, hosted by Radio Plymouth. Visitors can also enjoy a huge range of street entertainment along Cornwall Street and outside Plymouth Market, including juggling unicyclists, fire breathers and performances from Street Factory and Plymouth Morris Dancers. Two samba carnival parades will take place, and Mi Salsa Cubana will be encouraging everyone to get into the carnival spirit with dance sessions on the streets. In addition to this, there’s carnival craft activities on offer for children, and cooking demos, classic cars and even a gin bar for the adults to enjoy. As well as being a celebration of Plymouth’s vibrant West End, the day marks the 60th anniversary of Plymouth Market, which is the lynchpin of the city’s independent shopping quarter. The Grade II listed building was officially opened on September 7 1959 and has been home to a fascinating and eclectic mix of stalls and eateries ever since. On the day, the market will be hosting cooking demos and tastings by Plymouth foodies’ favourite, Jacques Marchal and there will be a number of special offers on stalls throughout the market. Popular entertainer Billy Wiz Magician and face painters will be on hand to entertain children too. Plymouth Market has also commissioned a specially designed canvas bag to celebrate

New parking restrictions threaten future of award-winning children’s theatre in Devonport Park... New all-day parking restrictions around Devonport Park could threaten the future of the hugely-successful Soapbox Children’s Theatre, according to its director Iain Slade.
Plymouth City Council has already introduced an order restricting parking in Milne Place to permit holders only between 9am and 6pm - and also plans to impose a similar order in Exmouth Road. Director Iain Slade has written an open letter to Council Leader Tudor Evans appealing for the restrictions to be amended - without which he fears the award-winning theatre has an uncertain future. A ‘Save Our Soapbox’ petition opposed to the restrictions has attracted more than 1,000 supporters and the team behind the Soapbox are determined to fight on. In his letter Iain said: “We believe (the restrictions) are aimed largely at dissuading problematic commuter traffic from the dockyard parking in the area. “Unfortunately, since the first restriction in Milne Place was put in place, commuter parking has simply moved into the adjacent streets exacerbating the situation. “As a result, The Soapbox has seen a substantial decline in weekday ticket sales for its baby and toddler shows. “Many parents we have spoken with, although extremely positive about the service we provide, have complained about the difficulty they face with parking when
visiting the theatre. “We believe that if Plymouth City Council were to impose further allday parking restrictions in the nearby streets, it would render the theatre and park inaccessible to many and threatens the future viability of the theatre.” He said that the theatre’s core audience visit during weekdays between 10.30am and 3pm and spend approximately two hours at the theatre, cafe and park. He added: “Just over 30% travel from outside of Plymouth, from as far away as Exeter and St Austell. All have babies or small children and a fair proportion are pregnant and are unable to walk far with small children in tow. “We have implemented a travel plan to encourage users to walk, cycle or use public transport, but for some families this is just not possible due to distances, lack of infrastructure, mobility issues or circumstance. “It’s crystal clear that these parking restrictions will put families off visiting the park, theatre and cafe. As an independent community business, we depend on ticket sales to support the work we do within our local area and for our continued existence as an organisation.” The Soapbox is the only theatre in the South West Peninsula specialising in creating professional new theatre for children aged six months to 15 years. With funding from Plymouth City Council’s City Change fund, sponsorship by local companies such as CityBus and the Co-op and three

Hardly a car in sight. This photo was taken recently in the middle of the day in Milne Place. Parking restrictions mean that only residents with permits can park here between 9am and 6pm - which has caused a parking headache for families wanting to attend The Soapbox Children’s Theatre during the day crowdfunding campaigns, the rundown building has been given a new lease of life. The directors are looking to raise a further £350,000 for the next phase of development, which will see the creation of an outdoor learning space, rooftop stage, a two hundred seat amphitheatre and increased employment and graduate opportunities. Iain added: “Our vision is to create a nationally recognised centre of excellence for children‚‘s theatre and culture. We are proud of the transformation we have achieved in re-purposing an unloved building, which, as you may know, was originally a semi-derelict WWII mustard gas decontamination unit and former scabies clinic.
“This historical building has become something hopeful and remarkable for the children of our city.” One local councillor, Kate Taylor, has already pledged her support for the campaign, but so far Soapbox have had no response from Tudor Evans. A period of consultation over the planned restrictions ended in July and the Highways Department are currently preparing a report for the city council based on the responses. Iain added: “We want to reassure local residents that we are not looking for the restrictions to be totally removed - just adjusted so that families and children who want to use the Soapbox during the day can park nearby.”

The Green Flag Award scheme is a national body that recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces. Devonport Park, Tothill Park, Ham Woods, West Hoe Park, The Hoe and Freedom Fields have previously been bestowed with the honour and have again retained the Green Flag status. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “Central Park is Plymouth’s premier green space so it is fitting that it has Britain’s premier award. “Central Park has got a very exciting future. With a new café, sports hub and tennis courts nearing completion, Green Flag status is yet another string to the bow. “I’d like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers, not just at Central Park, but at our other Green Flag green spaces, without whose commitment and hardwork this would not have been possible.” International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.” “Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.” The Green Flag scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards and creates a benchmark of excellence in green spaces.

Surplus funds from the café will be invested back into Central Park and other educational projects so as well as enjoying the food and drink, customers will know they are also supporting great projects. Guests, including friends of the park, volunteers and Councillors sampled the new café for the first
time at a VIP event where Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, officially snipped the ribbon. Councillor Evans said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be here today to open this wonderful facility. We are so proud of this project – the location is perfect, the design is perfect, the ecology is perfect, the set up is perfect. “The Meadow Café will help to further enhance Central Park’s reputation as Plymouth’s premier green space.” FullyCATERed’s managing director Brad Pearce added: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to work in partnership with the council on this project to open The Meadow Café. “The café is a great addition to the park, and we
are excited to share our wider ethos of supporting families to access great tasting, affordable food and drink as we do in schools across Plymouth every day through CATERed.” The café will also host a new water refill station, the first to be delivered as part of the council’s pledge to help reduce single use plastic The design of the café is inspired by the rolling hills in the surrounding landscape and uses natural materials to blend into the park. It also has a wildflower roof with 34 different varieties of wildflower, the grass blanket will become a haven for bees and other pollinating insects, whilst adding heating benefits to the café below.
Boom time for Plymouth online business Plymouth-based online construction materials retailer cmostores.com is continuing to see rapid expansion with 2018 sales increasing by 44 per cent continuing a trend of record growth.
With the firm’s e-commerce model continuing to grab market share from traditional builders’ merchants, group revenue rose 220. per cent in just three years from £12.1m at the end of 2015 to £38.6m in the year to December 31 2018. The business is now predicting further turnover growth to around £50m in the current financial year and will soon be launching two new superstores. Over the last 12 months, the company - which is based at Burrington Business Park - has seen a 35 per cent increase in visits to its four online superstores which supply in excess of 70,000 products across the build cycle to both trade and DIY customers. The business is also expanding its trade offering so that professional contractors can now benefit from trade credit, exclusive discounts, rebates and rewards, in order to drive new accounts and sales from larger building firms. Andy Dunkley, chief executive of cmostores.com said: “Online retail has revolutionised the high street and the many benefits of internet shopping including improved product choice as well as time and cost savings are increasingly being taken into more traditional and trade sectors by forwardlooking e-commerce businesses. “As a result, we’re seeing phenomenal growth with our disruptive model already having a major impact on more traditional builders’ merchants. “Over the last year, we’ve been continuing to invest in developing our operational and executive team to ensure that our business is scalable with further significant expansion expected as we focus on enhancing our trade division.
Chief executive Andy Dunkley
“As a business, we are well on track with our plans and have an ambitious vision to establish ourselves as the leading brand in online construction products.” Sue Packer, chief financial officer of cmostores. com, added: “We have a clear plan and these latest results mark another key milestone in our development. We are financially robust and have huge potential for further growth. “Already, we have been able to establish ourselves as a credible alternative by putting customers firmly at the centre of our proposition. Investment in providing user-friendly platforms, backed up by a knowledgeable sales team, has set us apart. “We also place great emphasis on building strong, mutually-beneficial relationships with our
supply partners enabling us to add the latest, innovative products to our online superstores. We look forward to building on this success as we continue to serve both DIY enthusiasts and the building trade. “In 2018, cmostores.com acquired Webestores, successfully integrating it into the company’s online platform as doorsuperstore. co.uk alongside its existing roofingsuperstore. co.uk, drainagesuperstore.co.uk and insulationsuperstore.co.uk websites. Door superstore is flying and will be this year’s best growth performer,” she added. Established in 2008, cmostores.com (previously known as Construction Materials Online or CMO) is a second-generation family business which now employs a 100-strong team at its new, larger headquarters in Plymouth.

Dog fouling in city to be targeted by undercover patrols
Plain clothed environmental enforcement officers will be patrolling in Plymouth from Monday July 29.
Focusing on areas where residents have reported issues, officers will be on the lookout for those who do not pick up after their dogs. Owners who are caught not doing the right thing will be handed a fixed penalty notice for £100, which if not paid, could end with a criminal conviction. Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “I am absolutely fed up of seeing dog poo on our pavements and in our parks. “I am constantly hearing from residents about how it’s a problem in their area and I’m pleased to be introducing a method to catch those responsible. “When we took control of environmental enforcement, we said we’d act on intelligence and patrol in all areas of the city and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” While the patrols will primarily be on the lookout for people who don’t pick up after their dogs, they will also be keeping a close eye on dog control, ensuring that dogs are kept on leads in the required areas. Why plain clothes? Everyone hates dog poo and the council receive a number of complaints each week about it on streets and in parks. Often, when people decide they’re not going to pick up after their dogs, they tend to have a quick look around, check there’s not an enforcement officer around, and then walk on. With plain clothes patrols, the council hope to add a substantial deterrent to these type of offenders. Why does the council bother with dog control? There are various areas, in various green spaces in the city, where there are rules on dog control. Some places, like fenced children’s play areas, prohibit dogs completely. Others just require dogs to be on leads. This is because even the most responsible dog owner can lose sight of their dog when they are off the lead and not notice if they poo. All the places where dogs can’t go, or must be on leads, have clear signs but if in doubt, check the website at www.plymouth.gov.uk/ dogcontrol What about littering, fly-posting and flytipping? Although dog fouling and dog control will be the priority of the plain clothed teams, they will not turn a blind eye when they spot littering, fly-posting or fly-tipping and will issue FPNs. If they’ve not got uniforms, how will people know that an officer is genuine? Officers will carry Plymouth City Council identification and produce that at the start of any conversation with members of the public. Where will they be patrolling? The plain clothes patrols will be in areas where residents have told us that there are particular issues. But this is just the start. If your area has a particular issue with litter or if dog control at a particular children’s play area is getting you down, then get in touch at www.plymouth.gov.uk/dogcontrol.

New plastics code of conduct launched A new code of conduct to help businesses, community organisations and individuals cut down on single use plastics has been launched by partners in Plymouth. The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct was launched jointly by members of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce and Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s City Conversations event. It follows the news last month that Plymouth is the largest UK city to be awarded Plastic Free City status by Surfers Against Sewage. The Code gives lots of handy hints and tips such as encouraging the use of reusable cups, making sure events are

eco-friendly by using recyclable materials including cups, plates and cutlery, and thinking about packaging when ordering supplies. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re really pleased to launch the new Code of Conduct jointly with Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. “As a city we’re committed to doing all we can to reduce single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution and to do this we need everyone’s support. So the Code is really about making it as easy as possible for businesses, community organisations and individuals to take part. We can all do our bit for people, Plymouth and the planet.” Stuart Elford, Devon and Plymouth Chamber’s Chief Executive, said: “Devon and Plymouth Chamber is delighted to support The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct and launch the initiative to business leaders at our City Conversations event. Protecting our natural resources is important for everyone and businesses need to play their part. This code will help organisations to do their bit with handy hints and tips. The Chamber will encourage all our members to sign up to the code, which is even more important as Britain’s Ocean City approaches the Mayflower 400 year and bids to be the first National Marine Park.” Jackie Young from Environment Plymouth said: “Taking action on single-use plastics is so easy. Everyone can do it so there’s no excuse. Our Plastic Free Business Pioneers have eliminated everything from coffee cups and straws to packaging. They’ve listened to us and to their clients who are increasingly asking about plastic-free options. It’s great for meeting environmental and CSR targets and, after the initial adjustments, can even prove cost effective. What’s not to like?” Since the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics was launched in June 2018: • 264 schools, community groups, families and individuals have signed up to be Plastic Free Community Ambassadors and 102 local businesses have signed up to be Plastic Free Pioneers as part of the work led by Environment Plymouth. • 100 campaigners have taken part in awareness raising ‘plastic surgery’ workshops • 800 volunteers took part in 160 litter picks with local community group Clean Our Patch, and collected 4,000 bags of litter. • 748 volunteers have taken part in beach cleans with Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and collected 261 bags of rubbish and 5,000 ‘nurdles’ (small plastic pellets used in a number of products) • CATERed who provide school meals for 67 of Plymouth’s secondary schools have removed 8,000 plastic straws, removed disposable plastic packaging and moved over to biodegradable • A Sea Bin has been installed by Plymouth City Council at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of a pilot project to monitor plastic pollution with the University of Plymouth

Council move to reduce plastics at the firework championships Plymouth City Council is working with key partners to reduce single-use plastics at the British Firework Championships, the city’s biggest annual event.
Taking place on Wednesday August 14 and Thursday August 15 this year, the British Firework Championships sees six of the country’s top firework companies battle it out, putting on a ten-minute display in a bid to be crowned the best. The displays are fired from Mount Batten pier, designed with Plymouth Hoe as the best viewing spot. The council is working with Environment Plymouth and TESA (The Event Services Association who are a trade body representing the outdoor events industry in the UK) to reduce single-use plastics at the competition, to lessen the impact on the environment. Plastics are used within fireworks for a number of reasons. Some types of firework contain a plastic ‘pod’ which contains the different elements that colour the displays and these are sometimes propelled into the environment, which means they can end up in the sea. The competition rules have been tightened up this year to exclude certain types of fireworks which clearly include additional plastic. Recently Plymouth became the largest UK city to be awarded Plastic Free City status by the global charity Surfers Against Sewage. The work to achieve this was led by Environment Plymouth on behalf of the Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce, of which Plymouth City Council is one of the key partners. The Taskforce also recently launched the new Plastics Code of Conduct to help local businesses cut down on plastic waste. Jackie Young Co-ordinator for Environment Plymouth and the Community Lead for Plastic Free Plymouth said: “We are delighted to have been able to work with the organisers and the British Pyrotechnic Association to limit the plastic components this year, and we are hopeful that this will also result in less plastic debris than previous years. “If it can be done here it can be done all over the world…so Plymouth is leading the way again.” Oleta Forde from Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers said: “We are pleased that work is being done to reduce plastics in the British Fireworks Championships this year and we hope this will help reduce pollution. We have also organised some beach cleans after the event so please do get involved if you want to volunteer.” Measures will also include: A detailed audit of the displays will take place before the competition moving forward, and plastic components that aren’t necessary have now been banned. Single use plastics are also being reduced on Plymouth Hoe, the main viewing point for the displays. There will be no plastic cutlery or straws available and soft drinks will be sold in cans (though water will be bottled). Drinks from the bar will be served in recyclable plastic cups, which are made with 50 per cent recycled plastic. Public recycling bins will be available on the Hoe Promenade and visitors will be asked to recycle as much as they possibly can and use the appropriate bins for rubbish. Anyone watching from Plymouth Hoe can also bring their own reusable water bottles and fill them from the free refill points in front of the Navy War Memorial. How you can help Visitors who watch the fireworks from other viewpoints around the city are asked to be considerate of the environment and take their rubbish home with them if there are no bins available. Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers have organised two beach cleans following the fireworks which anyone is welcome to attend, though if you’re under 18 you must be accompanied by an adult. Equipment will be provided. Thursday August 15 12pm on the Hoe Waterfront (meeting point on the path opposite the Dome and above the Lido) Friday August 16 12.30 pm at Mount Batten Beach (meeting point at the bottom of the stairs)

FOOT HEALTH MATTERS with Andrew Scowcroft of Foot Solutions and City Centre Chiropody Summer has arrived and this can be hard on your feet.
We tend to be more active and wear lighter footwear, which is great, but can also expose your feet to more hazards. All of us will opt for going barefoot, wearing flip flops and slipping into airy sandals at some point, so outlined below are simple steps to keeping your fabulous summer feet healthy and looking their best during warm weather. Wear the right socks. Acrylic and synthetic blend socks work best to wick away perspiration that can lead to fungal infections. Moisture of any kind is the perfect environment for a fungus to grow. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water on summer days will minimise foot swelling due to the heat. Moisturise. Feet dry out more in the summer because you’re not wearing socks all the time. To keep your feet baby-soft, apply moisturiser in the morning after you shower (to lock in moisture) and at night. Evaluate your flip-flop wear. Thong-style flipflops can result in sore feet and ankles. But even so, you don’t have to completely steer clear of flip-flops in the summer. Some flip-flops are better than others, choose styles with good arch and heel support. Also avoid
Some summer tips... walking in them for long distances. Add cushioning to summer shoes. Slip-ons and flimsy sandals often have thin soles and little cushioning and foot support. Keep shoes and socks dry. If your shoes and socks get wet, take them off and dry them completely before putting them back on. This will guard against fungal infections. Pack an extra pair for outings involving water or when the forecast is for rain. Clean feet after water activities. Rinse your feet with clean water after wading or swimming in a lake or river. Ditto for stepping in puddles of water. Stagnant water in lakes, rivers, and puddles often contain bacteria that could potentially lead to foot infections.
Remove nail polish periodically. Covering your nails with polish all summer long can be unhealthy for your nails. Take off your polish periodically to give the nail bed some air. By paying attention and being aware of how easy it is to damage your feet, you can avoid problems with aching arches, stubbed toes, toenail pain, ankle soreness and even foot cramps after wearing unsupported footwear, such as sandals and flip flops. Andrew and Karen Scowcroft own and run Foot Solutions and City Centre Chiropody at 34 Royal Parade. If you’d like to learn more about any of these conditions check out their websites or book via their appointment line 01752 222660.

Plymouth to work with Music Venue Trust to develop live music in city Plymouth City Council is working with the Music Venue Trust, a national grassroots music charity, to support and develop live music in Plymouth.
Following consultation with venues, promoters and musicians involved in the local music industry, the council has teamed up with the Music Venue Trust to discuss and identify the problems faced in Plymouth and how to tackle them to support a thriving local music scene. Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: “We listened to the concerns that were raised about the local music scene, and we’re taking action. I’m thrilled to be announcing our partnership with the Music Venue Trust who have worked all across the country. The problem faced by live music venues is not just a local one – so it’s great to be working with an organisation that has expertise and a great track record of reviving grassroots music scenes. “Together we will be working to grow and develop this important aspect of Britain’s Ocean City’s vibrant cultural scene.” The Music Venue Trust will be engaging with music venues across the city to understand the local music scene and identify steps to support the industry. This will be followed by a two week celebration event in September, Fightback Plymouth, which will celebrate the local artists and venues that exist in the city. Mark Davyd, CEO of the Music Venue Trust said: “We are excited to be working with Plymouth City Council and the city’s fantastic range of grassroots music venues. There is a Mark Davyd thriving, organic music scene here which has real potential to be regionally and nationally important. This is an opportunity to work right across that scene to identify the value of what already exists, seek opportunities to support it, and look for opportunities to plug the gaps that might prevent the scene reaching its full potential.” The Music Venue Trust works nationally to protect, secure and improve grassroots music venues. Created in January 2014 the charity has been working at a national level, feeding into Government research about the music industry and working to secure the long-term future of iconic music venues across the UK. As part of this work Music Venue Trust has delivered successful Fightback events in Bristol, Brighton and Manchester.

Sports coach Brad Yeo endorses Together for Childhood programme It was a chance meeting that got Ernesettle resident Brad Yeo involved in the Together for Childhood programme. He grew up in the community, and now running sports sessions at Ernesettle Hall for local children he recognises the important role he plays in safeguarding the youngsters in his care.
After attending a community forum meeting Brad heard about Together for Childhood for the first time. Following it he happened to bump into the NSPCC worker, who had spoken about the programme, at the local Co-Op and approached her about how it might be able to support his own work in the community and increase his safeguarding knowledge. Encouraging and empowering parents to challenge sports coaches, youth leaders, and club organisers, about how children are kept safe in their care is important, and the father-of-four wanted to be sure that children attending his sports sessions were safeguarded and that parents felt comfortable talking to him about it. He said: “I want people to feel safe, and to protect the children using the hall. You can never be too on the ball. Through Together for Childhood I now know that one in 20 children experience sexual abuse. That’s a huge number and it really makes you think about how many children abuse impacts.” In any community setting there is every likelihood that at some point a child may
Many students graduating from the college cite the community feel and togetherness of the college which makes it a unique place that gets the best out of them. Graduating with a level 3 BTEC in Business, and moving onto study Business Management at Plymouth University, Louisa Morgan said: “It’s like a second home - It’s not too big, nobody is left out and tutors have time for everyone.” Beth Halligan, who graduated in Health & Social Care said: “My tutor was there for me even when I struggled and thought I was going to give up, but they were
behind me telling me I could do it. It was that motivation that pushed me to complete my course, and I’m now moving onto study Nursing at University.” Completing her Level 2 Travel & Tourism course Angel Scott said: “Discovery College motivated me and had a faith in me that I’d never experienced in school or another college. They helped me grow in confidence when I had none when I started out - for that I can’t thank them enough.” Angel is now looking ahead to continuing her path to become a train driver for GWR. Discovery College is still accepting places for students wanting to start in September 2019 with courses in Business, Childcare, Health & Social Care, Public Services, Sport and Travel & Tourism. go to a community figure, such as Brad, as a trusted adult to disclose something that is worrying or concerning them. Being prepared for that is crucial to making sure children feel safe, and parents feel reassured about the safeguarding measures in place. As a child, the former builder spent his summer holidays at the site and having
seen it lay derelict for many of his adult years decided he wanted to give something back to the community by transforming the building into a sports hall. The football fan’s determination paid off and since January 2019 he has been running community sports sessions, including futsal, and hires the hall out to other sports enthusiasts. Brad wanted to draw on the expertise of Together for Childhood to help him, and he now has plenty of resources in his viewing areas for parents to help them with any questions they may have. Together for Childhood workers have been in to talk to parents and many of them have completed a pledge to say how they will protect their children. He added: “I’d like to think Together for Childhood can prevent abuse. It’s a massive job from what we read and hear, people have abused power for a long time, but if they can reduce the numbers it will be a huge plus. The work that Together for Childhood is doing is brilliant, and I take my hat off to them.” If you want to find out more about Together for Childhood contact the NSPCC in Plymouth at Plymouth.Servicecentre@nspcc.org.uk or 01752 422577 or visit the NSPCC website. Apprenticeships explained! Most of us have heard about apprenticeships, but all too often, they are overlooked for a more traditional educational route.
Apprenticeships can provide a golden opportunity: paid jobs with time set aside for study to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. We work in partnership with top local employers across a range of sectors including, Business, Automotive, Construction, Teaching, Hairdressing, Child Care, Engineering and Health & Social Care. Our learners work with the employer throughout the week, earning a salary, with 20% of their time spent with us in our state-of-the-art facilities led by industry experts to consolidate their learning. While children now need to stay in education until 18, they do not need to stay in school, and apprenticeships offer an alternative route to meet this requirement, with the added incentive of earning while learning! Most 16 year olds dream of the day they can take their driving test and afford to buy their first car, by becoming an apprentice the dream becomes an achievable reality! There are other benefits too. For example; did you know you could start an apprenticeship at 16? Did you know you could progress right through to degree level apprenticeships? Did you
know you can start an apprenticeship at any time throughout the year? There is something more rewarding about becoming an apprentice, not only can you gain the same level qualifications as your peers, you will become more employable and progress quicker through your chosen career. Apprentices often enjoy great success after their apprenticeship, with many employers offering them a permanent role on completion and the opportunity to progress further. Recent Skills Group successes include our hair apprentices, Abigail Foster, Olivia Bolt, and Chloe Webber who were the first in the Plymouth area to pass the new Hairdressing End Point Assessment with examining body, City and Guilds. Chloe said: “I’m excited to grow my client base now that I have completed my qualification.” Rose-Marie Marsh achieved a ‘Distinction’ in her Business Administration apprenticeship, while training at Skills Group and working at Church View Surgery. She said: “I am delighted to have been offered a position at the surgery and look forward to my future career here. I would like to build on my experience and hopefully move up into more senior positions”. Leon Horn attained a ‘Distinction’ in all areas of his Customer Service Practitioner assessment

College of Art has so much to offer Whether you aspire to be a director, set designer, actor, or prop maker, working in theatre, film or television, they’re all made through creatives with different specialisms collaborating.
Plymouth College of Art’s UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts gives 16-19-year-olds the opportunity to learn and explore the varied skills that lead to many career paths in the world of performing arts. Experienced director, choreographer, performer and lecturer Nicola Rosewarne leads the programme after twenty years of touring nationally and internationally with Kneehigh Theatre, WILDWORKS and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Nicola teaches across a very broad range of specialisms and is currently most interested in the ‘pursuit of playfulness’ in performance and performer training. She said: “I’m delighted to join the team at Palace Court and can’t wait to meet the brilliant students who will be joining us in September.” Using live and digital techniques, students will gain hands-on experience in backstage skills such as make-up, costume, props, and set design. They will also explore and debate the ways that performance can influence people’s opinions and perceptions, thinking particularly about how the
messages in a performance can fit within a wider social context. This A-Level equivalent course sees students based at Palace Court, the college’s pre-degree campus, studying alongside graphic designers, filmmakers and fashion designers - opening up a world of collaboration. With the college’s established industry connections including past and ongoing collaborations with Tate, Barbican Theatre, BFI and Theatre Royal Plymouth, students will have access to opportunities across the UK, to sample life as a professional in the performing arts industry. The college has also recently been awarded International Baccalaureate (IB) World School status, meaning that students have the opportunity to study two IBCP subjects such
as English Literature, Film, History, Business Management, Mathematics or Psychology, alongside their chosen Extended Diploma course, combining both academic excellence and vocational skills. Recent research has shown that IBCP students ‘enroll and persist in university at higher rates than the national average’ and more than half go on to attend very competitive higher education institutions, demonstrating that the IBCP prepares students to attain some of the most selective university places in the world. From the lectures and creative classes to the live briefs and placements, the college ensures that all students are fully supported and prepared for the next stage of their creative journey. Many of their students progress into Higher Education, with their Extended Diploma students guaranteed a place on one of the many BA (Hons) programmes offered at Plymouth College of Art when they achieve a Merit or higher in their final assessment. From Performing & Production Arts, to Fashion & Textiles and Graphics, Illustration & Game Arts, there’s an Extended Diploma programme to suit all young creatives. Visit the Plymouth College of Art Open Day on Saturday September 28 to explore them for yourself!

With 60 years of experience and over 620 centres in the UK and Ireland, Kumon has established itself as the UK’s largest provider of supplementary education. Today, the Kumon Method is available in over 50 countries, with 4.3 million students enrolled worldwide and an expanding network of franchised Instructors. Why not take the next step in your career with a trusted global brand and be part of our growing network by opening your own Kumon Study Centre in Plymouth? As a Kumon franchisee, you’ll receive world-class training and full support from our business support teams. A dedicated Area Manager will help you make sound business decisions and help you develop a successful and thriving business. Kumon’s franchise model allows Instructors to have a career with a sense of purpose that is both financially and socially rewarding. Stephen Chamberlain, Kumon Instructor of the Swindon West study centre, has been nurturing independent and
confident learners for the past 8 months. Since becoming a Kumon franchisee earlier this year, he has already experienced the many benefits of running his own Kumon business. “Before becoming a Kumon franchisee, I worked in the retail sector for 30+ years in a senior management position. It was an unpredictable and demanding role with a fixed salary, and no matter how hard I worked and how far I advanced in my career, someone else was always making the decisions. I had no control over my hours, which eventually began to have a negative impact on my home life, as well as my personal health. It was not until I took the next step in my career and became a Kumon franchisee, that I began to experience a better balance of my professional life and personal life. Unlike my previous role, I am now reaping the rewards for the effort I put into my work and earning a better salary. The Kumon Franchise model has exceeded my expectations in every way! I am particularly impressed with the guidance, support and training I’ve received. Having this support is a huge benefit to being a franchisee over being an employee or being self-employed. Even though I run my
own centre, I’m not completely on my own. Kumon’s support has greatly contributed to the success of my business.” Just like Stephen, you can also reap the rewards of making a significant contribution to your community by helping children achieve a brighter future. You could be running your own study centre in as little as three months!
To become a Kumon Instructor, you will need to be degree educated, as well as demonstrating the desire to help children build their confidence and become independent learners. Teresa with her son Adam
Teresa’s world record headshave challenge Young people wanted for new creative project Plymouth’s Playwriter’s Organisation is launching a new project for creative youngsters aged between 16 and 20.
16-20 will start in September and run for 400 days until November 2020. Organised and run by the Playwriters Organisation the project is free, and is open to all young people aged between 16 and 20 plus who are interested in any or all of the following: creative writing, playwriting, theatrical production, performance and story-telling, film and screen-work. No qualifications are necessary. The commitment is just to do the work on-line and then have it appraised in tutorials weekly. These will be held on Friday mornings or Sunday afternoons, so the project is suitable for all whether working, not working, or in full-time education. During the lifetime of the project the participants will create various pieces of work which will then be published or performed. Mike Ford of the Playwriters Organisation said: “The creative skills and teamwork abilities acquired by the students, as well as the social skills, will be transferable into any workplace or further study they wish to do afterwards.” The Playwriters are collaborating with Roughwood Associates and film-maker Ryan John on the project, and will publish an anthology of the students’ work, staging a production and making a film, all in 2020. Students wishing to participate should apply by either calling into The Playwriters’ Friday morning sessions at the Noah’s Ark pub in Courtney St, any Friday in August, or phone Mike Ford on 01752 786777 with their contact details.
A Plymouth mum is organising a record-breaking headshave to raise money for a charity which gave her son the trip of a lifetime.
Teresa Brookshaw, who lives in Stoke, is appealing for volunteers to help beat the Guinness World Record for the most people having their head shaved at the same time. She wants to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation which grants the wishes of a lifetime for children with serious illnesses. Teresa’s 16-year-old son Adam has an extremely rare disorder called Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) which sadly took the life of his sister Sophie in 2007 when she was just five years old. MMA is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain proteins and fats (lipids) properly. The effects of MMA, which usually appear in early infancy, vary from mild to life-threatening.
There are thought to be less than 20 cases in the UK. Earlier this year, Starlight granted Adam’s wish to watch a WWE Wrestlemania Show in America, paying for him, his mum and elder brother to visit the USA and attend the event in Monterey. “Starlight is a fantastic cause,” said Teresa, ”and it really was the trip of a lifetime for the three of us.” She is organising the Guinness World Record attempt at Plymouth Guildhall on September 8 and is appealing for people to step forward and join the challenge. The current record is 329 and although Teresa has already signed up a good number of volunteers she still needs literally hundreds more. And she is also appealing for people who will do the shaving. Entry is £10 and details can be found by ringing Teresa on 07900882129 or emailing her at tbrookshaw842@gmail.com.
Chance to enjoy fireworks - from the Lynher Barge The British Fireworks Championships on August 14 and 15 are one of the most exciting summer events in Plymouth - and this year there’s the chance to make it a memorable experience by watching this amazing spectacle from the Lynher Barge. Lynher was built by James Goss of Calstock in 1896 and used to transport coal, stone and produce along the Plymouth waterways. Lynher served the waterways trade all her life, at one point she was also requisitioned by the Navy to act as a barrage balloon in the Sound! Her pedigree is such that Lynher is protected as one of the top 200 vessels part of the National Historic Fleet and listed as a unique maritime heritage asset. Saved from destruction by the late Charlie Force, she is now part of a community interest company, the Lynher River Barge CIC. Lynher is the only locally built historic vessel commercially licensed for day sail and venues afloat. Private charters, corporate events, river cruises, team building, away days and seamanship training are all available. Any surplus created is reinvested into community participation on the water such as the delivery of family residential activities under the Making Waves Together programme supported by Sport England and aimed at underprivileged families living in the PL1 and
PL2 postcode areas of Plymouth. As a cargo boat carrying a load of 60 tonnes, Lynher is broad and welcoming, offering a stable platform and plenty of character. The barge has a real therapeutic effect to anyone who comes aboard and helps people to enjoy and reconnect with the natural surrounding of the Plymouth Sound and its Rivers. The impact created by the barge experience helps families to access water based activities at a low cost breaking down socially perceived barriers which generally surrounds water sports. As a smack rigged gaff cutter, Lynher is great fun to sail and to use as a team building platform. The barge lends herself perfectly to corporate away days, mixing the physical team work of pulling sails
and steering with the perfect relax of a picnic lunch at anchor, sunbathing on her broad, flush deck, swimming and taking the tender out for a row. Anyone with an interest on the heritage of the Rivers Tamar and Lynher can book the barge for a unique river cruise experience, stepping back a century as Lynher glides through the routes of her past, seeking forgotten shores and secluded anchorages to explore. Lynher can be booked for any type of event – parties alongside quays can accommodate up to 40 people while during day sails Lynher can take 12 passengers. Prior booking is essential - please contact Barbara Bridgman on 01752 710052 e-mail barbara@ tamarbarge.org.uk or go to http://tamarbarge.org.uk.

£75 million commitment to city by top law firm Plymouth City Council has secured transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson as key tenants for its headquarters at Millbay.
The company has signed a new lease committing to Ballard House – and to the city and region – until at least 2035. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “What a great day. This is a company that not only works in Plymouth but works for Plymouth and whose staff are a big part of life here. “Womble Bond Dickinson are great ambassadors for this city with highly-skilled professional staff and their support for the city and in particular, the Mayflower 400 commemorations, is inspiring. “This is not just about office space, it is about an international company committing its staff and millions of pounds over the next 16 years to this city.” Craig Moore, partner and head of WBD’s Plymouth office, said: “With an office in Plymouth since 1881, we know that the city and the South West region are a great place to do business. “There is an enormous amount happening here and we are delighted to confirm the extension of our lease of Ballard House for the next 16 years and a refurbishment investment of over £1 million. “It has been a pleasure working with Plymouth City Council, their significant investment in the city and the pro-active nature in which they have been moving things forward made it a really easy decision for us to remain at Ballard House and make a significant investment here. “WBD’s Plymouth office continues to grow from strength to strength, providing clients with a unique offering of national and international experience on their doorstep. Our long term commitment to Plymouth is a reflection of the growth in our clients and the value we bring to them.” “We look forward to growing the business further”. The council occupies four floors of the seven story office block since moving out of the Civic Centre in 2014. Ballard House is now a base for over 700 council staff, but advances in technology means that more and more staff are being encouraged to work flexibly – both at home and in other council buildings – to keep the costs of office space down. Most of the staff are now hot-desking. It means the council also retains control of a key strategic site right on the waterfront at Millbay, an area currently undergoing significant regeneration.

Masterplan for Plymouth railway station unveiled Artist’s impression of the new multi storey car park and the refurbished Intercity Place in the background
Plymouth’s rail commuters are getting the big picture of the city’s exciting plans to create a better welcome for rail passengers.
A masterplan gives a bird’s eye view of what buildings could be going up, what’s coming down and how this vital entrance to Plymouth could look in the future. Key partners in the city are working together to create a whole new feel to this important gateway for people arriving into the city by rail – from Cornwall as well as Devon and beyond. The University of Plymouth recently showcased by way of a public consultation, its exciting ambition to transform the tower above the station into Intercity Place. This will house inter-professional clinical skills and nursing/midwifery facilities as well as additional educational services to support the future health workforce. Subject to planning permission being granted, it will signal the first major work to rejuvenate the station and its surrounds as the anchor investor. An aerial impression of how the railway station development will look
Now commuters can see more detail of what’s in store as the regeneration scheme moves off architects’ drawing boards and into the planning system. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “This is a massive regeneration scheme involving key organisations in Plymouth all committed to creating a real sense of arrival – a wow – when people come here by train. “It’s a hugely complicated scheme with lots of different elements. The university’s vision for the tower means we have an anchor tenant but we now want to know the initial thoughts of those who use the station the most.” The masterplan would become the guiding document for decisions being taken around this location. Plans currently include demolishing the redundant rail incident safety centre (RISC building) on the east side of the station to enable a new multi-storey car park to be built. The existing car park opposite the entrance is also earmarked for demolition and a new hotel and second university building created in its place. The masterplan proposes a new car park, almost
doubling the capacity to 469 spaces, for the site of the RISC building. Station staff accommodation will be modernised and significant new public space created including a direct pedestrian link to North Cross and the city centre. University of Plymouth Vice-Chancellor Professor Judith Petts CBE said; “This forms an important part of the University’s ambitious estate plans which will transform the campus and reimagine university teaching and research spaces for the 21st century. The station scheme is an important part of these plans and will significantly improve this notable city landmark so that it becomes an exciting gateway into Plymouth. “As a new home for allied health professions and nursing/midwifery, this builds on our already strong health credentials by making a significant investment in educating tomorrow’s health professionals for the region and beyond.” GWR Plymouth station manager Sara Rogers said: “There are almost 2.5 million passenger journeys through Plymouth every year, and it is easy to see why the station is regarded as the gateway to the South West. New Intercity Express Trains, providing almost 25 per cent more seats on every train than the ones they have replaced are already in service, and from December this year we will see more frequent and faster journeys. In keeping with improved services, I am delighted rail users will now have the opportunity to see these upgrade plans and the next phase in the station’s development.” The entire scheme is expected to cost in the region of £80m and has already received some financial support. Through the One Public Estate, the Cabinet Office has provided £500,000 for feasibility and planning work. • Plymouth’s train travellers will be walking out of the station onto Brunel Plaza. The multi-million regeneration scheme proposed for the area around the station will be named after Isambard Kingdom Brunelt, he great engineer, who was not only the chief engineer for the Great Western Railway, but also built the iconic Albert Bridge over the Tamar and Plymouth’s Millbay Docks. To read more visit http://plymouthnewsroom. co.uk/masterplan-plymouth-railway-stationunveiled. The consultation on the proposed masterplan closes on July 21.

Culvert changes better for otters! A culvert planned to run beneath the new Forder Valley Link Road could be changed to make it better for otters – and other wildlife – to travel through it.
A design has been submitted to the city’s planners with changes including an extra ledge for otters and other animals to use it as a route to and from the Forder Valley Nature Reserve. The original design was for two separate culvert sections for the new junction planned for the Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road intersection. Now the plan is for a single culvert, leading to an ecology pond. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene said: “People may not know we have otters in this valley – but we do and we are, as promised, doing all we can to work with nature to ensure any loss to the natural environment is more than compensated for.
“This redesign is not only better for otters and other wildlife travelling along the valley, it’s going to create more landscaping.” The culvert will look more like a more natural water channel which is better for fish and other species in the water. Fewer river diversions will be needed during the build – again better for the stream’s inhabitants The Forder Valley Link Road is one of the biggest transport schemes Plymouth has embarked on. Once complete, the link road will help alleviate traffic on the A386 Tavistock Road and Manadon Roundabout, providing an alternative route to the north of the city and Derriford, home to key destinations such as Derriford Hospital, the University of St Mark and St John and the Plymouth Science Park. A new road bridge across Bircham Valley will be built to connect William
Prance Road in Derriford to the junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road. A larger, relocated signalised junction will be built at the Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road intersection as well as new walking and cycling facilities The landscape around the valley will change dramatically but the council and its contractors have been working to make sure that any loss to the natural environment is more than compensated for. The council has already begun planting 14,500 trees. Environmental specialists are working on site and also on ensuring the designs improve the quality of wildlife habitats in the valley. The main construction works are expected to start this Autumn. Ahead of this, a number of utilities – such as broadband, electricity and water – are being relocated.
College apprentices create Mayflower replica Two groups of City College Plymouth apprentices have created scale replicas of The Mayflower and the Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland.
The apprentices, who are employed by local businesses, including Aldermans, Babcock, Pipex px and Princess Yachts, showcased the vessels at a special presentation event held at the college. As part of their training, the college, engineering, welding, fabrication, naval architecture, mechanical and electrical apprentices work together in teams to create scale models out of metal with functioning parts. This year, a group of 30 apprentices collaborated on a replica of The Mayflower
The team of apprentices with their Mayflower replica
that sailed from Plymouth to America, which it is hoped will go on display in The Box to coincide with next year’s 400th anniversary celebrations. They started work on this
in May, allocating roles and responsibilities (from project management to assembly) and working on the engineering drawings, which formed the basis of the ship’s components.
The model was constructed from stainless steel and the apprentices used a range of techniques and machinery to build the ship, from plasma cutting to sheet metalwork and welding Alongside this, a group of 16 Babcock apprentices worked on a replica of the Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland. This was constructed from aluminium and is a water-tight, working model, fitted with an electrical motor. If you are interested in a career in the engineering industry and would like to find out about the range of courses and Apprenticeships available at City College Plymouth, call 01752 305300 or visit www.cityplym. ac.uk.

Heart patients benefit from key partnership Patients needing specialist cardiology treatment are benefitting from a partnership between Derriford Hospital and Regent’s Park Healthcare to reduce waiting times.
The third cath lab developed as part of the partnership opened recently and the first patient at the Peninsula Heart Clinic, Pamela Robertson, was absolutely delighted with her treatment. She said: “Everyone was so nice; they made a scary experience less scary. This was my fourth procedure and I would be very comfortable coming back here in the future as everyone was so lovely.” Chief executive, Dr Anil Ohri and clinic manager, David Smith from Regent’s Park Healthcare marked the occasion with flowers and gifts for Pamela. The new facility is expected to treat
around 1,000 NHS patients each year, seeing those requiring basic angiograms and straightforward, day-case Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). In a partnership arrangement, the new centre offers services for NHS patients three days per week initially. It is staffed by RPH cath lab and recovery staff, with consultants from University Hospitals Plymouth carrying out the procedures. Similar cardiology public-private partnerships are running elsewhere in the country but in most areas, this work is outsourced to an off-site facility. The NHS retains control in this arrangement using a private facility situated on an NHS site, building on Plymouth’s status as a centre of excellence for cardiothoracic services.

They were chosen by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association as award winners for Company Singing in Sister Act, as well as Outstanding Achievement in Sister Act and Sweeney Todd, two very different, challenging choices of production. Chair Diane Bennallick, speaking on behalf of the company, musical director Marcus Alleyne and producer Amanda Paddison said: “We’re delighted to receive NODA’s valued recognition for the dedication and teamwork in successfully tackling such varied and challenging musical productions.
“Amateur musical drama companies are made up of people who have their own careers and professions, freely giving their time to bring entertainment to a wide audience, often unsung heroes when seen in competition with professional companies. These awards are a tribute to all our company’s talent and hard work on and off the stage.” Not content to sit on their laurels Sounds Musical are now rehearsing for their new annual revue ‘Saints and Sinners.’ Musical director Jenny George has chosen an innovative, wide ranging repertoire of music, dance and drama numbers chosen from popular films,
stage musicals and plays. The two Saints and Sinners shows are at Devonport Playhouse, Fore Street, Devonport on Saturday October 12 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. More details regarding auditions for this exciting new venture will be announced shortly.

Exercising with animals has become a bit of a thing in recent years with things like Goat Yoga and Alpaca Walking. Piggy Pilates is already proving to be every bit as popular. Combining a stunning Devon countryside location, animals and exercise, the classes are already attracting a lot of interest and with Pennywell miniature pigs joining in, what’s not to love? Pilates teacher, Harriet Parkes leads the Pilates sessions which are followed by a continental breakfast and the promise of piggy cuddles with the Pennywell piglets. Harriet explains, “While there is plenty of fun to be had, Pilates has many benefits including improving posture, movement quality, mobility, flexibility, mental cognition and core strength”.
Pilates was invented by German-born Joseph Pilates who believed that mental and physical health were closely connected. He designed his exercises to make the maximum use of your time by targeting the deep postural muscles of the body, building strength from the inside out and rebalancing your muscles. It is suitable for all ages and abilities and Harry’s classes are designed to be relaxed, nonintimidating and welcoming to all.

Why it’s important to be an encourager THE
By Dave Simpson, Station Manager of Cross Rhythms Plymouth
Experience
Encouragement is one of the most valuable, and often most underestimated aspects of human life. We have all at one time or another felt it’s effects and yet it is something which can be hard to give out and to most of us it really does not come naturally. I have no idea why but giving out encouragement and positive affirmation to another person can often feel slightly awkward and is something we can tend to avoid. Yet we will all have positive thoughts and feelings for people, the reasons why they are our friends and why we like spending time with them are two such examples. But what good is it just keeping those things to ourselves? Encouragement can be related to who we are as people but also can relate to things that we do or want to get involved in. In my experience it has often been encouragement that has helped me to step out into opportunities that my own fear, doubt and insecurities may have held me back from. One big example of this is presenting radio shows on Cross Rhythms Plymouth. Anyone who knew me growing up would know that
public speaking, presenting and being on stage was much more of my brothers’ domain and something that I shied away from. Yet I was given the opportunity to be involved in the radio station and to present on air and it was encouraging words from friends and colleagues that helped me to step out of my comfort zone. Encouragement has continued to build my confidence in something that I know wasn’t completely natural to me! As well as knowing what it feels like to receive encouragement we all know, often all too well, what it is like not to receive it and to have self-doubt creep in to our minds about our value and worth. Without Dave Simpson encouragement we can also lose confidence in the things we do and it can become all too easy to give up. An ancient proverb in the bible says that ‘the tongue has the power of life and death’. In other words with the things we say we can either build people up or tear them down.
We live in a society which is quick to tear down and discourage. The media is mostly critical of people in authority and anyone who is in the public eye. A large part of this is vital as it keeps politicians and public figures accountable but how often is it balanced with encouraging comment on those who use their authority effectively and for the common good? It can seem quite rare. This culture of criticism and discouragement can rub off on us and if we’re honest it is often much easier to speak negatively about someone than positively. A close friend of mine recently said something that challenged me deeply about giving out words of encouragement. He told me that he would rarely tell people he loved what he really thought of them and was known in his family for giving out very short birthday and Christmas cards with little more content than signing his name. However when one of his family was diagnosed with a terminal illness he realized every opportunity he had

to tell people he loved them and to encourage them was precious and he didn’t know how many more chances he would get. He told me how he now regularly texts friends and family with an encouraging word and if he thinks it, he tells them. I was very blessed to grow up with two very supportive parents who would often encourage me in who I was as a child and also in terms of things I did and wanted to get involved in. This helped to form in me a positive sense of my own value and identity but I know for many people this wasn’t their experience and for some of you reading this your upbringing may well have been quite the opposite. This need not leave you feeling left out and without hope though as the biggest encourager that any of us can know is the perfect parent for all of us, that is God. No one knows us better than the one who created us and it has been my experience that knowing God’s love and affirmation personally is stronger than anything we can receive from another person.

purples and thought this colour scheme would look striking on a National Express coach. I had planned for the entire design to be patterned fish scales, but the design naturally developed into a school of fish. USEFUL Celebration for Honicknowle Commnet NUMBERS August 2019
@PlymChronicle

Honicknowle Commnet, the charity established in 1999 to promote the voice of young people and improve the health and wellbeing of children, young people and their communities in Honicknowle and the surrounding areas, celebrated its 20th birthday in July, with a free family fun day on Honicknowle Green. The 20th anniversary celebration was a bonanza of activities free to visitors thanks to a £400 donation from the Community Grant Fund of Honicknowle Labour Councillors, Pete Smith, Pam Buchan and Mark Lowry. There was something for everyone at the fun day, including a bouncy castle, sports activities, dog show, displays by cheer leaders, martial arts demonstration, a pig-racing game, information stalls, and much more. Also attending were Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Devon and Cornwall Police. Cllr Pete Smith said: “Commnet have been such an important part of the Honicknowle community since they were created, raising the ambitions of people in the area by offering everything from advice on how to eat healthily on a budget to support for victims of domestic abuse. “When Commnet see a need in this community, they respond, which has led to schemes such as the Oasis Café, where parents of children with autism can meet each week for peer and expert support. “Labour Councillors are proud to support the work of Commnet and the birthday celebrations were a great event for local families to kick off the summer holidays together.” Angie Carthy, Chair of the Honicknowle Commnet Board of Trustees said: “We have had

many successes over the years and have been supported well by funders. Without the funding, the valuable and much needed work would not be possible. We have a fantastic, caring staff team with a strong passionate board. I look forward to the future of Honicknowle Commnet growing and forging strong partnerships. “Over the last 20 years our Honicknowle Commnet has delivered a wide range of local services, working particularly with local parents, young people and children. Commnet has provided support on issues such as healthy eating information and time out for yourself sessions; and the not-for-profit continues to deliver youth work that has included afterschool clubs and holiday play schemes. Notable successes at Commnet include the funded TYLA (Turn Your Life Around) project, which supports young people with the transition between primary and secondary school, enabling young people to feel more valued within their community, learn and be provided with new opportunities. Commnet aims to make positive changes and reduce anti-social behaviour and low-level crimes. Other projects run by the group include Bump and Beyond, focusing on working with young and
expectant mothers and their babies with support for issues around housing, mental health, getting out and about and general everyday care. A new Tea and Toast group was set up this year, open to everybody from the local community to drop in to chat and access support if they need it. This summer Commnet has been awarded funding from the Fit and Fed scheme, enabling them to run a summer programme that addresses deprivation and food poverty in the school holidays. The scheme will provide 25 young people with fun activities and free meals for five days per week during August. These projects are supported from funders such as The Big Lottery, Lloyds TSB, Peoples Health Trust, Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Ladies Charity, Four Greens Community Trust, and local ward councillors.
The Hungry Empire
Britain’s quest for food shaped the modern world - according to author Lizzie Collingham in her book The Hungry Empire.
Her book will be discussed at the Plymouth’s Global Book Club at a free event open to all on Wednesday September 11 between 7pm and 8.30pm in the Babbage Building Room 002 at Plymouth University. Lizzie examines Britain’s relationship with its colonies and empire, through the food eaten by rich and poor, in Britain and around the world. The Hungry Empire tells the story of how the British created a global network of commerce and trade in foodstuffs that moved people and plants from one continent to another.
Hospital radio manager guest speaker at Moor’s Edge U3A Guest speaker at the monthly meeting of Moor’s Edge U3A was Andrew Hill, station manager of Plymouth Hospital Radio who has been a volunteer there for 36 years.
Hospital Radio was started in Plymouth by Toc H broadcasting commentary of Argyle matches to patients in the 1950s via the telephone network. The first permanent premises were opened by the Lord Mayor, George Creber, on the Barbican in 1969. After several moves, they are now based in Bircham House at Derriford and broadcast 24hours a day 365 days a year to patients who can use Hospedia or the hospitals free Wifi to listen. The programmes range from specialist music and requests to speech based shows, news, comedy and sport. The radio is a charity staffed by volunteers and needs £7,000 per year to cover expenses. Plymouth has been named ’Station of the Year’ at the Hospital Broadcasting Awards five times. Andrew Hill gave some amusing examples of things going wrong during broadcasts but there has been praise for the ways in which patients have benefitted from this service. Members have been busy this month. The
Garden Visits group revisited Wildside near Buckland Monachorum on a lovely summer’s day and saw the progress Keith and Ros Wiley have made with their four acre site. Their landscaping and naturalistic planting in lovely colour combinations is amazing and was featured on Gardeners’ World. Afterwards a visit was made to Long Ash Garden Centre for lunch. Later in the month a trip was made to Overbecks (National Trust). After a tricky drive, the cafe was most welcome and the view and gardens on a sunny day were brilliant. Weekenders have enjoyed some tasty outings including an all-day breakfast at Monty’s on the Barbican. Once again, a delicious Sunday lunch was had at Yelverton and another visit was made to Tavistock with lunch at the Eastgate Cafe and a look at the Butchers’ Hall market. The next venue will be the Wet Wok on the Hoe. The Singing for Fun group have been busy practising for ‘Songs and Cakes’ which they performed at Roborough Methodist Church with a collection for church funds. Bridge for Beginners have entered their first competition and are happy with their result halfway down the scores. Photography for Fun have the task of taking pictures of rainbow colours
some choosing objects and others looking at flowers. The walkers have been to the Gulworthy area and lunched at the Tamar Trails Centre. Playreaders are continuing to read ‘The Norman Conquests’ by Alan Ayckbourn and the darts players have once again played at the Burrator after having lunch there. Various topics were discussed by the History Group including Ice Fairs (merrymaking on the frozen Thames), the history of film and filmmaking, the history of cricket, the story of Henry Cooper, a winner of the Victoria Cross in the Crimean War and the origins of some well-known sayings such as ‘letting the cat out of the bag’, ‘above board’, ‘cold shoulder’ and ‘fag end.’ Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 2.30pm at the Woolwell Centre (PL67TR). Retired or semi-retired folk are welcome to join. Visitors are welcomed twice at Members’ Meetings before deciding if they would like to join. Once they join they can then participate in a variety of interesting groups. Diary dates: There is no Members’ Meeting in August September 12: 5th Birthday of Moor’s Edge. Ben Manning, deputy principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Year awards ceremony is an important event for the college and a great way to round off our academic year. It provides us with an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, have all achieved fantastic results and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the college are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the city. “It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and tutors.” Award Winners - College Awards Max Lavis, 20, from Stoke Apprentice of the Year Max left school at 16 and with his employer, student accommodation company Tern Quay, he has progressed with his painting and decorating qualifications from a traineeship to an Apprenticeship. My time at City College has taught me perseverance and leadership skills, and I am proud to now be supervising and supporting a new apprentice in my workplace.” Lewis Matti, 21, from St Budeaux Endeavour Award Lewis is a student who has faced numerous personal challenges, but is ready to face whatever life throws at him. Jenny Bishop from the Real Ideas Organisation, said: “We chose Bracken as the winner for this year’s Community Engagement Award for her participation in work experience opportunities across a number of community settings during her course, but also her active involvement as one of the college’s Student Ambassadors.
