WHITLEIGH PLAY PARK GETS A BIG MAKEOVER A Plymouth play park has had a complete overhaul thanks to a partnership with a community group.

Having joined forces with the Whitleigh Community Trust, the council have been able to replace all of the equipment in Milford Lane play area and make significant changes to the neighbouring play park in Norwich Avenue. A new slide, cradle swing, seesaw and carousel have all been installed alongside seating to create a welcoming, safe area for local children. The changes have been funded by a £19,000 donation from the Postcode Lottery, successfully bid for by the Trust. The park was officially opened at an event with over 50 local children last week. Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “It is so nice to see children of all ages enjoying the play park. “Play improvements and encouraging children to go outside is so crucial for their health so I’m delighted to see the Milford Lane facility completed and ready for the summer holidays.” Barry Meek, Chair of Trustees for the Whitleigh Community Trust, said: “Its lovely to see all these children and residents coming together to make their area a better place to live and play in” As well as the changes at Milford Lane, nearby Norwich Avenue has also seen some changes, with improved access to the play area for older children and a new path installed. Norwich Avenue and Milford Lane will form the Milford Play Hub. The Trust will run a range of community activities and events including play days, bug hotel building and community picnics within the two parks while the Council will continue to maintain the equipment. Councillor Smith added: “Thanks so much to our friends at the Whitleigh Community Trust for all their hard work. This is proof that partnership work in the community can really bring about positive change.”

Hundreds unite against dementia at the Plymouth Memory Walk Around 700 people joined forces to unite against dementia at Plymouth Memory Walk.

68-year-old Sarah Redford, from Saltash, who volunteered at this year’s event and whose grandmother and mother both had dementia, cut the ribbon to start Alzheimer’s Society’s Plymouth Memory Walk. Teresa Parsons, Alzheimer’s Society services manager for Plymouth, said: “Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer with someone developing it every three minutes yet dementia research still trails far behind other health conditions, after decades of underfunding. “I am so glad that hundreds of people from across Plymouth, and the surrounding area, united against dementia to improve the lives of people living with the condition. “Dementia devastates lives;

it slowly strips people of their memories, relationships and identities. Every pound raised will help Alzheimer’s Society provide information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected

by dementia. Alzheimer’s Society is committed to spending at least £150 million over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who

has helped make this year’s Memory Walk such a brilliant success.” Sarah Redford added: “I took part in Memory Walk two years ago and volunteered last year. Dementia has affected my family quite considerably, so it is a cause close to my heart. My grandmother and mother both had dementia. My aunt, who is 93, has it and my younger sister, who will be 66 in October was diagnosed at the age of 59 and is now in a nursing home. “The camaraderie on Memory Walks is absolutely amazing as everyone has seen someone affected by this terrible condition.” Memory Walks are taking place up and down the country or people can organise one of their own. Livewell goes digital and donates funds to two local worthy causes Two charities have received vital donations after Livewell Southwest ditched paper payslips and went digital this year!

There’s lots of benefits to accessing a payslip online including reduced costs, easy access to historical payslips without having to sort through files, and reducing Livewell’s carbon footprint. Livewell pledged to donate half of the investment in the scheme to local charities and asked staff for suggestions of worthy beneficiaries. As a result the Shekinah Mission and the Together for Childhood project each received a cheque for £500. Shekinah provides opportunities for people in recovery or seeking recovery. This may include recovery from homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, offending behaviours or mental ill health. Shekinah believes that everyone deserves to be given another chance, and a passionate and dedicated team of staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly over the years ensuring that people in crisis are given a variety of opportunities to reach a secure and contented life. Steven Elford, future recruitment advisor at Livewell suggested Shekinah and presented Andy Kebby, their events and community manager with a cheque. Andy said: “A huge thank you to all the Livewell staff who nominated Shekinah to receive these funds. This money will go towards filling our freezer with meat as this is one of the most difficult items to get donated but one of the most essential food items we use.” The second cause was the Together for Childhood project and suggested by Sara Kirkup, children young people and family services professi, onal lead at Livewell. Together for Childhood is an innovative, evidence-informed approach bringing local partners and families together to make our communities safer for children. Working collaboratively, agencies will develop and test effective approaches for preventing child abuse, drawing on examples of best practice from around the world. The project will see children’s charity the NSPCC join forces with Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Safeguarding Children’s Board, safeguarding partner agencies such as police and health, community groups, fellow charities and the voluntary sector, schools and the wider public – with the aim of building a better future for young people by identifying and addressing problems at a local level in a truly integrated way. Oliver Mackie, strategic service manager, NSPCC said: “Livewell Southwest are a core partner in the

The donation made by Livewell significantly helps us in engaging children, parents, communities and professionals in conversations about the steps and actions needed locally to enable healthy relationships and prevent child sexual abuse and provides a real boost to the

project as we prepare for citywide campaigns.” For more information about Together for Childhood, including a short video by Cllr Sue McDonald, Children and Young People at Plymouth City Council, visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/schools educationchildcareskillsandemployability/ childrenfamiliesandchildcare/ keepingchildrensafe/togetherchildhood For more information about Shekinah visit www. shekinah.co.uk

Strategic Planning and infrastructure said: “Work is progressing well on relocating utilities and we are now getting the site ready for the start of the main construction work. “This is one of our biggest ever infrastructure projects but we are doing all we can to minimise

disruption and let people know of any changes that may affect them so that they can plan ahead.” Full details of the Forder Valley Link Road and improvements around the Forder Valley interchange (Leigham roundabout) can be found at www.plymouth.gov.uk/fordervalley

Gearing up for main construction on Forder Valley Link Road People who use Blunts Lane are being warned it is to close later this month for the duration of the Forder Valley Link Road works.

The narrow route, which runs between Forder Valley Road and Davy Road, is going to be out of action to through traffic from Monday 23 September. The closure will be in place throughout the project, which will create a much-needed alternative link between the A38 and the north of the city. It will also enable work to start on a haul road (a temporary road that will be used for transporting material and plant to and from the site compound) at the bottom end of Blunts Lane, near Poole Farm. Balfour Beatty will set up a site office beside Poole Farm at the same time. People will still be able to access Poole Farm but all other drivers and pedestrians will need to follow a signed diversion route via Novorossiysk Road and Miller Way. Access to properties and allotments on Blunts Lane will be maintained from the north (via this diversion) and residents are being contacted directly. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for

£9 million homes boost for Plymouth

Gas repairs in Miller Way for two months

Wales & West Utilities is upgrading gas pipes along Miller Way in Derriford.

The £100,000 investment started in early September and is likely to be completed by the end of October. This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area so that people are safe and warm for generations to come. To keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe, Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Plymouth City Council and it has been agreed that rolling two-way traffic lights will be in place on Miller Way as the work progresses. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travelling. Ahead of the work, Wales & West Utilities has been in touch with local businesses and schools in the area to advise them of the planned work.

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing the work. She said: “We know that working on roads like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. “This work will not only keep the gas flowing safely and reliably today, it will also help make sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy.”
“We’ll be working as safely and as quickly as possible to make sure the work is completed in a timely fashion, while keeping inconvenience to a minimum for local people and road users.” For information contact freephone 0800 912 2999 or enquiries@wwutilities.co.uk.

Thanks to an executive decision signed today by Council leader Tudor Evans, £9 million will be allocated to the new Housing Investment Fund. The fund – announced as part of the third Plan for Homes earlier this year – is a pot of money designed to support the housing industry to deliver the needs of the city. This could include acquiring land, gap funding for specialist homes and truly affordable housing, preparing sites for new homes or providing infrastructure. For example, the regeneration of North Prospect was the first project to benefit from the fund in March, when £1 million was put towards the construction of new roads and footways, updates to the drainage systems and the installation of services like electric and gas to allow for new homes to be built. Councillor Evans said: “People need houses, truly affordable houses at that, and I’m delighted that we will be supporting the delivery of the Plan for Homes through this fund. “The council no longer directly provides new homes, but we can’t leave the market to fend for itself so instead we work with a range of delivery partners to build the homes we need. “This allows us to intervene to ensure that all residents with all different kinds of needs have the housing that they require.” The Housing Investment Fund is built on a principle of funds from housing activities going onto provide more new homes. For example, the £9 million injection includes £7 million from Right to Buy receipts from the sale of former Council houses and is completed by Section 106 contributions specifically to support the provision of affordable housing. Meanwhile, any future funds resulting from the sale of land for housing will also go back into the fund, making it a sustainable resource for funding future housing throughout Plymouth. Future Right to Buy revenues will also be added to the fund. The latest version of the Plan for Homes sets out a framework to help support the building of 5,000 new homes over the next five years. By supporting a variety of new and affordable housing to tackle housing needs and homelessness whilst addressing existing poor housing conditions, the plan sets out a clear vision of the future for housing in the city to support the delivery of the Joint Local Plan.

Plymouth is shortlisted for Future High Street Fund

Plymouth has made the shortlist of the Future High Streets Fund, which could unlock more funding to help the city centre’s regeneration. The City Council submitted its initial bid in March which focused on Plymouth City Centre and seeks funding to help deliver an ambitious regeneration agenda. It has now been confirmed that the expression of interest for Plymouth City Centre is one of 50 additional places nationally to be shortlisted for phase 2. The timing for the phase 2 bidding process is yet to be confirmed, but means that the city could be in line for up to ÂŁ150,000 initially to work up project business cases. Final funding awards could be up to ÂŁ25m per place. Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance and city centre champion said: “We have been working hard to regenerate the city centre and to revitalise it, make it come to life after hours and to provide homes as well as jobs. Getting through to the second round of the Future High Street Fund is a significant step in the right direction.â€? The Expression of Interest was prepared earlier in the year by a team at Plymouth City Council, working closely with the Plymouth City Centre Company. Steve Hughes, the City Centre Company’s chief executive said: “We are delighted to be on the shortlist. Our city centre is moving in the right direction but we still need investment in our public spaces and find new uses for empty retail units. This fund could be a big help.â€? This news follows the recent designation of the City Centre as a Conservation Area. An expression of interest has also been submitted to the Heritage High Streets Action Zone programme, which is part of the Government’s now ÂŁ1 billion Future High Streets Fund.

The work of the Millfields Trust, which is a social enterprise, is summed up in four words: Business where community profits. Its beating heart is the empowerment and improvement of quality of life for all in Stonehouse.

The Trust recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary, and guests including Board Members and tenants past and present, stakeholders and friends of the Trust were treated to an evening of fine food and great entertainment, at Stonehouse Barracks. Roger Pipe, chief executive and Mandy Toze, business development manager have been with the Trust from day one and were presented with gifts from the Board to say thank you for their long service. “We aim to make a difference in Stonehouse, supporting people and uplifting the neighbourhood itself,” said Roger. Over 20 years, they have certainly done that. To generate income to sustain its work, the Trust offers high quality affordable business space for rental on flexible terms, in premises designed to support emerging, small and medium sized enterprises across all sectors. Profits from rental income have enabled Millfields Trust to invest £1.6 million back into Stonehouse and to start and more importantly sustain other projects designed to benefit the local community. Speaking of the Millfields Trust’s business activities, Rev Sam Philpott, Chair of the Board who has been with the Trust for 20 years, said: “When groups start up, their work often stops after two or three years, because people expect them to be self-sufficient and they stop the funding. So Millfields creates its own income.” That strategy has played a big part in its successful and steady growth. Regeneration of buildings and community spaces; creation of business spaces so that new ventures and small enterprises can start up and thrive in a supported environment; inspiring children in the seven local primary schools to believe in themselves - these are just some of the successful, long term Millfields projects that have contributed to Stonehouse becoming a significantly different place to live and work over the last twenty years. Since 1978 Sam has worked against a backdrop of low expectations within and outside the Stonehouse community. He, and others, have relentlessly encouraged residents and those in positions of power in the city to say ‘yes’ to the possibility of change, for the good. “This was a hurting community that felt it was overlooked, ignored and left out,” said Sam. “They were told by some that things couldn’t change and they believed it. But I’ve found that there have always been people in the community and the city willing to change things,” said Sam. Over the last twenty years of Millfields Trust and more, Sam says that: “The community is now taken much more seriously by the council and businesses too. But the cornerstone is the residents, who believe this is a good place to live and it can be a better place to live. Millfields Trust helps them to engage and make this happen. “People outside the area used to think it couldn’t change either but now they are seeing and acting

Supporters, Board members and staff of Millfields Trust celebrate 20 years

differently. There are some who champion what we do, like council leader Tudor Evans who believes in social enterprise and always encourages and aims to say yes to explore what we’re doing. There are Councillors from all parties like that.” Sam is quick to give credit to Millfields CEO Roger Pipe: “He has gathered a brilliant team of exceptional people and helped them to gel, got their buy in and they all deliver.” It’s testimony to the quality of the team that some have been with the Trust for many years. Millfields Trust is designed to have the Stonehouse community fully involved. The Board has a majority of eight local community directors, alongside a business director, two city councillors (appointed by the council), a tenant director and can co-opt three more (like Sam, who now lives outside Stonehouse after many years serving as vicar of St Peter’s church).

“Anybody in the Stonehouse community can become a member, and they can stand for election to the board if they want to make a positive contribution to its aims,” said Sam. “Those aims are to raise people’s sights, bring them together to see others getting on in life and say ‘I can do that’. We have to become a society that says ‘yes’ and explores ideas to make things better.” Plymouth, like any other city, has its problems but it has its champions who are seeking to improve things. Sam Philpott, Roger Pipe and the Millfields Trust team are one expression of that kind of positive work. Over the coming months, the Plymouth Chronicle will feature the work of groups that are engaged particularly with issues of child poverty and encouraging young people especially to have hope that they can make better futures for themselves, their families and their community.

Millfields 20 years snapshot The first buildings rented to tenants in 2000 were at Mary Seacole Road and Creykes Court in the Millfields (the former RN hospital in Stonehouse). The Trust has added more properties including the purpose built Genesis building and HQ (formerly the Jaeger factory), both on Union street. They provide flexible co-working in shared offices to help new businesses make the move from home to office; up to 1,500 sq ft spaces, including office and light industrial depending on the location. In 2008 The Widening Horizons programme was launched, supporting and enabling students from the seven Stonehouse primary schools to explore new and challenging learning experiences with visits to a number of different workplace venues. In 2013 Millfields Inspired was established as a charity supported by the Millfields Trust. Its objectives are to work with young people and their families from the Stonehouse area, to provide a pathway from school to a future career. It seeks to create sustainable change by extending and developing the Widening Horizons programme. In 2017 Grow Stonehouse was launched, a community gardening project, led by Millfields Inspired and funded by The People’s Health Trust. The project helps residents of Stonehouse to find ways to meet, socialise and spend time outdoors in shared green spaces. In 2018 the Trust established innovative, viable textile manufacturing at Makers HQ. This Community Interest Company is a unique collaboration between Plymouth College of Art, Millfields Trust and the local Stonehouse community to reignite fashion and textiles manufacturing in the city. It is fitting that it is located in the former Jaeger factory, which once employed 250 people.

The Zone needs your vote in bid for prize The Zone in Plymouth is on the shortlist to win a share of Persimmon Homes’ Building Futures £1 million pot supporting under-18s nationwide, but first they need online votes to win.

Persimmon Homes Southwest is backing The Zone to be a prize winner at a gala dinner in October, where cash awards of £100,000, £50,000 or £20,000 will be made to those winning the most online votes. Lucy Green (Project Lead) representing The Zone, said: “It is a huge achievement to have been selected as a regional finalist, but now we really need people to get behind us and get voting, so that we are in the strongest possible position to earn one of the top three awards on the night, so that we will be in an even better position to help more young people into the future. The young people that we work with face multiple health inequalities. Up to 60% of young people aged 13-18 years that we work with will be at increased risk of smoking, increased risk of being obese, and at increased risk of poor sexual health.

“Many will be dealing with family and relationship breakdown and will have been exposed to domiciliary abuse. Many will have parents with drug or alcohol issues and will in turn themselves be at significant risk of poor mental health. “The team of specialist volunteers that we intend to train, if we win one of the major awards, will be in a better position to deliver early interventions with young people in partnership with colleagues from the NHS, and in partnership with local schools and community settings. This is a real opportunity to make a lasting difference in young people’s lives. Next year is the Zone’s 30th anniversary, and hopefully with the support of Persimmon, we can make it a year to remember’’. Lucy added: “Voting could not be simpler. Just log on to www.persimmonhomes.com/building-futures/ and select ‘Finalists’ and then vote for ‘The Zone’. We would really appreciate everyone’s support.” Building Futures is being delivered through the

Persimmon Charitable Foundation, which last year donated £620,000 to support children’s sport. Through Building Futures, a total of 128 grants of £1,000 have been awarded to groups supporting sport, education & arts and health across Persimmon’s 31 regional businesses and its head office. Persimmon Homes is an official partner of Team GB and the Persimmon Charitable Commission enlisted the help of medallists Kat Copeland and Callum Skinner to help determine the three regional finalists for each business division. One initiative from each category will go on to win £100,000 each through a national award scheme to be decided by a public vote. As well as the £100,000 first prize, there will be a £50,000 second prize and a £20,000 third prize in each sector, while a further 87 shortlisted projects will each receive £5,000. Online voting will close at midnight on September 27. To support ‘The Zone’ please visit: www. persimmonhomes.com/building-futures

Big boost for grassroots music in city

Grassroots music venues across Plymouth have joined forces to create a fortnight long festival of music called Fightback Plymouth.

There will be more than 100 shows at over 20 venues between September 13 and 28. Fightback Plymouth has been coordinated by the Music Venue Trust in a joint initiative with Plymouth City Council to promote the city’s independent music scene. Venues taking part include Plymouth Pavilions, B-Bar, Barbican Theatre, Annabel’s Cabaret and Discotheque, The Treasury, The Underground, Fortescue Arms, The Junction and UPSU Bar and Main Hall. Fightback Plymouth is a new campaign that will encourage audiences to visit their local grassroots music venues and promote Plymouth’s emerging and existing musical talent. There will be live music every day throughout the festival at a whole range of venues right across Plymouth. Many venue bars will be further participating in the Music Venue Trust’s fund-raising campaign by stocking Fightback Lager, a craft beer developed from within the grassroots music community. A donation from every pint and can sold gives financial support to the charity. Fightback’s Gary Prosser said: “These venues are the backbone of the live music scene in Plymouth, providing spaces where artists can take their first steps, develop and grow. Fightback Plymouth provides an opportunity to showcase the fantastic range of artists and venues that Plymouth enjoys, celebrate the history of our music scene and support its future.” MVT chief executive Mark Davyd said: “We are delighted to be working with Plymouth City Council on this public facing event which also provides the opportunity to research and survey the city’s music venues and music scene. “We will be working with local promoters, musicians and venue managers to understand the potential in Plymouth’s grassroots music venues and unlock the opportunity to build a world class music scene.” Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: “It’s fantastic to be working with the Music Venue Trust on Fightback Plymouth, which is going to give vital support to the local grassroots venues and musicians at the heart of our live music scene. “Most importantly, this is our chance to prove how passionate Plymouth is about live music. I want to encourage everyone to show their support by getting out and enjoying the events on offer, visiting the brilliant range of venues and watching our talented local bands and musicians.” Fightback Plymouth is keen to interact with local Plymouth businesses to create a truly unique festival that unifies the Plymouth grassroots community. Contact gary@ musicvenuetrust.com if you are interested in getting involved with the event. For details of the events and venues visit www.mvtfightback.com/plymouth

NSPCC survey helps to identify needs of families in Ernesettle The community of Ernesettle is leading the NSPCC’s flagship Together for Childhood programme with organisations across Plymouth working with local residents to develop and test ways to best protect children. The Together for Childhood team provide the latest monthly update on its work to keep children safe from sexual abuse.

Since we announced Ernesettle as our pilot site area, people from the community have been telling us what they think about abuse prevention and what they already do to keep children safe. We need to hear from as many people as possible, whether they are a parent or not, so that we have a better understanding of what is important to people in the community. We are keen to know what the community want and need from Together for Childhood, so to help achieve this, we’re using a community survey which we have shared at local events we’ve been at and through local groups and clubs. Recently the survey was hand delivered to 400 homes in the neighbourhood and we would urge the households who have received the survey to complete it and return it in the pre-paid envelope as soon as possible to ensure they have their say. It’s clear already that people in Ernesettle are very

positive about Together for Childhood and passionate about preventing abuse. The suggestions and reflections shared with us by residents, workers and community groups have been refreshing and insightful, and will help shape this important partnership work as we continue to move forward with it. What we find out from the survey can help ensure we don’t duplicate work that is already happening, but instead focus on developing resources that help people identify and respond to abuse by giving them the information and support they need to continue their great work. Anyone who has not received a survey, but would like to be involved, can email claire.white@nspcc.org.uk or call 01752 422755 to be provided with a paper or online version to complete. You can find out more about Together for Childhood, and how to get involved, on Facebook by searching Together for Childhood Plymouth (Ernesettle), on Twitter @TFCPlymouth, or on the NSPCC website at www.NSPCC. org.uk or by calling 01752 422577. Adults with a concern about the welfare of a child can contact the NSPCC’s helpline for advice and support on 0808 800 5000 or help@nspcc.org.uk. Children can contact Childline on 0800 1111 or childline.org.uk 24/7, 365 days a year.

NSPCC workers in Plymouth are acutely aware of the impact sexual abuse can have on childhoods, through the therapeutic work they offer at the children’s charity’s service centre in the city.

Its Letting the Future In service supports children and young people to rebuild their lives, having experienced sexual abuse. Now the NSPCC has joined forces with communities and organisations across the city in a partnership programme aimed at preventing abuse from happening in the first place. Together for Childhood Plymouth is formed of NSPCC, Plymouth City Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, Livewell South West, Barnardos, community groups, children and families, the voluntary sector, and schools. The team preparing to take on the Plymouth 10k know that 1 in 20 children suffer sexual abuse and all of them are passionate about prevention and making sure abuse doesn’t happen in the first place.

It’s why they are pounding the streets of Plymouth, during training sessions for the 10k challenge, which they will attempt on October 6. Children’s Service practitioner Sam Wolf said: “I have decided to run in the Plymouth 10k, my first ever 10k, to raise money and spread the word about Together for Childhood. “The 10k is something that I will find a challenge, but for a worthwhile cause – sexual abuse prevention! “I couldn’t do it without the support of the team who all feel the same drive to get the message into the Plymouth community.” The money the team raises will be used to work with children and their families to explore the best ways to protect them. What works well in the pilot site area of Ernesettle will be rolled out in other areas of the city. The NSPCC’s Strategic Service Centre manager in Plymouth, Ollie Mackie said: “We will listen to communities, share what we know, what we find out, and work alongside children, young people, families and professionals to

build confidence in communities, taking positive action to keep children safe. “I have decided to take on the Plymouth 10k challenge because it is the chance to do something as a team and to spread the word about Together for Childhood; showing our commitment to prevent child sexual abuse goes well beyond our day to day jobs, it is something we all feel incredibly passionate about and the funds raised we hope will inspire others to step up.” The Plymouth PANTS campaign fronted by mascot Pantosaurus, forms one element of the Together for Childhood partnership that has seen organisations across the city unite, working together to prevent child sexual abuse. The programme is already providing help and support for families at a community level, to protect children from harm. For more information about Together for Childhood or to support the team visit their fundraising page, the NSPCC website, @TFCPlymouth on Twitter, or Facebook group - Together for Childhood Plymouth (Ernesettle).

Appeal tops £14,000 for Derriford’s new Paediatric Emergency Department An appeal to raise funds for the new Paediatric Emergency Department at Derriford Hospital has reached its target of £14,000. The SplashED Appeal has had many generous supporters who have given up their time and come up with innovative ideas to raise money. Widewell Primary School held a pre-loved book fayre, a Christmas market and held school discos throughout the year, raising a total of £250. Consultant in paediatric anaesthesia, Dr Michelle Chopra, completed a sponsored one kilometre swim dressed in a unicorn onesie and raised nearly £300 for the appeal. Thanks to generous donations including £3,000 from TSB banking, £1,500 from Plymouth Area Builders and Spreaders and creative fundraising efforts from Widewell Primary School, Dr Michelle Chopra, Drake Circus and Bandvulc Tyres, the appeal has now come to a close. The money will be used to purchase fun activities and items for children, to help keep them calm and distract them while they wait

in the children’s Emergency Department. Among these items, the League of Friends has purchased a ‘Magic Carpet’ which works by projecting interactive games onto a flat surface. Hundreds of different visual stimuli can be programmed into the projector, providing a fun activity for children, whilst keeping the floor space clear. “We would like to thank so many people for donating to this appeal in such a short period of time,” said Plymouth Hospitals charity development manager, Corinne Bailey. “Coming into hospital can be a very scary experience for many children so to be able to buy toys and resources that can distract children from their worries and tears is brilliant for everyone involved. “We will continue to fundraise for the Emergency Department as it is so busy and equipment will need replacing. “If you would be interested in fundraising, you can call us on 01752 430332 to find out more. The SplashED appeal and everyone’s support has made a big difference in cheering up the clinical area. Thank you again.”

Biker Stu’s incredible £84,000 fundraising efforts Plymouth biker Stuart Morrissey (AKA ‘Madrider1961’ when he is online) has been raising money for charities since 2004, riding his Honda CG125 motorcycle all over the UK.

In total, £84,000 has been raised from rides on behalf of charities including the RNLI, the Poppy Appeal, Army Benevolent Fund, DEBRA and the latest, and perhaps his final, a tour of the castles of Cumbria for Macmillan Cancer Support. During that time he has gone through two or three bikes, always relatively small 125s, and his oldest bike is now in the Moretonhampstead Motorcycle Museum. “We raised £55,000 on that bike, starting off with the round England ride for the RNLI in 2005,” said Stuart. Stu began his charity work when he was going through a tough time himself. “I was working as a chef at the Holiday Inn, and my marriage was falling apart. My head chef said ‘You need to get something to focus on’ because I was so down. They did some regular charity work at the hotel for DEBRA, raising about £400 a year, and that first year we got it up to £1,500.” Apart from a break in 2010/11 when spinal surgery prevented Stu from riding, he has completed charity rides every year. His ‘never say never’ approach meant that when Mike Grainger of GT Motorcycles told him not to take a recently fixed (but not 100% ready) bike on a ride, Stuart decided to go ahead and limit himself to 30-40mph. It was a round trip to Bolton in Lancashire. True to form, Stu completed the ride, albeit over a long time. “I enjoy the ride,” says Stu, “and so do the bikers I ride with.” However, he suffers pain

Stu Morrisey (third from left) with biker colleagues

from his back and hips, which is why he decided to make his latest challenge the last one. For this July’s Macmillan trip to Cumbria, Stu was accompanied by ‘Rocket’ Ron Quin on his 650cc Kawasaki and Dan ‘the Man’ Whittaker riding a Suzuki 600 Bandit. “Riding safe is important,” says Stu, “so we had a

support team in the van, making six of us on the road for six days.” The team set off from GT Motorcycles on Billacombe Road on July 1, taking A and B roads all the way to Cumbria, camping overnight at various stops. They toured the castles, ‘bagging’ 22 in total. “That included some medieval halls which are castles really.

Two of the official castles had jousting going on so we couldn’t get into them, one was on an island which we couldn’t get to, and one big one we couldn’t find at all somehow!” They all returned safe and sound to GT Motorcycles on July 6, tired but happy. “There was just one thing that made us a little sad,” said Stu, “we didn’t get as much publicity or fundraising for Macmillan as we wanted to. It’s no-one’s fault really, but we’d like to see the money go to at least £1,000.” Jo-Anne Rigby, from Macmillan said: “I would like to thank Stuart Morrissey and the Challenge Cumbria team for taking up this amazing challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. “The money that the team have raised is truly incredible and will really make a difference to people living with Cancer in Devon. “Every year over 1000 people from the county call the Macmillan Freephone helpline number for help with questions about cancer. Thanks to amazing fundraisers like Stuart, the line is now open seven days a week, 8am till 8pm with the ambition of making it a 24/7 service. “Thank you Stuart and the team for your support so that Macmillan can help people with cancer in Devon live life as fully as they can.” The Just Giving page is still open. If you would like to donate to this appeal for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is Stu’s last big fundraising ride, please visit www. justgiving.com/fundraising/bikersunite, or go to the Just Giving website and type bikersunite into the search bar. “It’s great work that they do,” said Stu, “they deserve all the help we can get for them.”

Every little helps - Tesco supports fund raising for Help for Heroes

A band of volunteers from Help for Heroes manned the collection buckets at the Tesco Transit Way store to raise just under £500 in vital funds during its Tesco National Collection Weekend for the charity.

The team was delighted by the support of Tesco shoppers who gave generously across the weekend, despite the terrible weather, including donations from a number of veterans who have benefited from support from Help for Heroes for their PTSD. One of the volunteer team, Derek Heape, was also a retired Royal Marine who came wearing his Green Beret and took part in the collection despite having to come to the store on his mobility scooter. Alec Brown, head of Local Community at Tesco, comments: “We’re incredibly proud to be able to support Help for Heroes with collections at Tesco stores across the country. It was great to see so many fundraisers in stores and we want to thank customers and colleagues for giving so generously to this worthwhile cause.” Karen Philips who was volunteer team leader for the collection with Help for Heroes, added: “The support of Tesco’s staff and customers, Retired Royal Marine not to mention our own volunteers, at the Derek Heape pictured at Plymouth store over the weekend was fantastic. The contract for the construction of Oceansgate’s second phase is set to be awarded to Kier, following a delegated decision being signed off today by Plymouth City Council. Oceansgate has transformed disused MOD land in South Yard, Devonport, into a marine Enterprise Zone and thriving business development. Council Leader Tudor Evans, said: “Oceansgate is a fantastic development, and one we’re really proud of. It’s bringing more jobs and more investment to Plymouth and cementing our status as a leading location for marine industry in the UK. “It’s a unique offering for businesses, with such close proximity to Princess Yachts, the Dockyard and Babcock, as well as to the in- and on-water testing opportunities offered out by Smart Sound Plymouth, a new proving ground for developing cutting edge technologies.” Phase 2 will see the creation of a new three storey office building and a further 15 light industrial units, which has the potential to create an additional 130 jobs. The buildings have been designed to be flexible, allowing for a range of sizes of industrial and office

space, depending on businesses’ needs. The development’s first phase was completed in April 2018 and is now a base for eight businesses, including the new Marine Business Technology Centre, as well as Lang & Potter Marine, international marine consultants MECAL and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Like Phase 1, the plans for Phase 2 include the use of natural building materials such as

stone to ensure the development fits within its historic surroundings at South Yard. The contract for constructing Phase 2 is worth £7.6 million. This second phase of Oceansgate has been funded by a £2.25 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and a council loan. and early 2000s, showcasing how, in spite of their labelling as ‘self-centered’ and ‘fragile’ they are finding new avenues to continue networking, exhibiting, and asking questions regardless of location or financial situation. Elsewhere, Liveanimals Theatre Company’s ‘Fish in Blender’ – a comment on the current state of politics – is a thought provoking performance centred on accountability,

empathy, and just how bad society is willing to let things get before taking action. ‘Fish in Blender’ will be popping up in city centre locations across the three days. Flock South West’s Lucy Stella Rollins said: “We’re delighted to make our first set of Weekender announcements with further news to come shortly. “We have a plethora of exciting and ambitious artists showcasing their work this year with listings ranging from exhibitions, workshops and other dynamic activity to take place across the city. “ Expect everything from subtle interventions to performative spectacles in this year’s showcase of the city’s creative talent.” Over the years, the Weekender has been made possible with generous support from sponsors, Plymouth City Council, partner art organisations in the city, project grant funding from Arts Council England; and more recently, Plymouth Culture’s ‘Horizon’, a twoyear visual arts programme from Arts Council England’s ‘Ambition for Excellence’ funding programme for Plymouth in 2017-2018. This year, individuals and organisations across Plymouth and beyond have rallied together to raise funds for the festival through an ambitious Crowdfunding effort. An impressive £5,737 has been raised through Crowdfunder as match funding to support Visual Arts Plymouth’s successful Arts Council bid, exemplifying a strong artistic network in the South West. For more details and information about the various events visit www. plymouthartweekender.com. The Weekender will have a market stall in the Pannier Market on the Friday and Saturday, which will serve as a focal point and central information hub across the weekend.

Plymouth Art Weekender returns in September

Venues of all shapes and sizes across Britain’s Ocean City will play host to exhibitions, events and community based activities for the 2019 Plymouth Art Weekender.

Founded in 2015 by Visual Arts Plymouth CIC (VAP), after the British Art Show 7 in 2011 saw a growing appetite for ambitious artistic activity in the city. The Plymouth Art Weekender started off as a grassroots experiment to bring together emerging and existing artists in a ‘fringe-like’ fashion. The collaborative event has grown in magnitude and last year, the Weekender partnered with The Atlantic Project, a pilot for a biennial for Plymouth to bring a set of renowned international artists and a programme of commissions across the city on the same weekend. This year’s Community Engagement Commission sees the Weekender partner with Nudge Community Builders, a community benefit society that owns, creates and runs activity in disused, underused or unusual urban spaces to lead to lasting positive change and community-led regeneration. As part of a unique city set up, new contemporary art production agency, Flock South West is coordinating and managing the Weekender in 2019 and 2020. This year’s Art Weekender takes place between September 27 and 29 with opening celebrations taking place at Plymouth’s largest independent, artist-led contemporary art venue KARST on the Friday evening. Other happenings over the course of the weekend include group show ‘Notopia’, from emerging artists, d0gMilk, examining the experiences of being a Millennial/Gen Z in contemporary society. This exhibition will present a survey of work from artists born between the 1990s

European funding boost for Plymouth’s parks Parks and green spaces in Plymouth have had yet another funding boost.

The city has just secured just under €4 million thanks to a successful funding bid by Plymouth City Council and its partners. The money, which comes from the European Commission, will go towards the Green Minds project which will re-wild urban parks, gardens and verges, introduce a new system of working with partners and crucially, encourage more people from all walks to life, to enjoy the health benefits that our green spaces provide This funding announcement follows hoton-the-heels and compliments the Future Parks Accelerator; secured from the National Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund earlier this year. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “This is a really exciting time for our green spaces with so many national bodies keen to invest in making them the very best that they can be. “This project will dovetail perfectly with our work on our Future Parks initiative and will in time lead to us running sustainable parks, nature reserves and woodland areas fit for several generations to come. “I’m looking forward to working with all the partners and communities to see the benefits of this project.” This funding has been bid for in conjunction with the University of Plymouth, the National Trust at Saltram House, Devon Wildlife Trust, RIO, The Data Place and Plymouth College of Art. The University, through its School of Art, Design and Architecture and School of Biological and Marine Sciences, will use scientific and digital tools to make nature in the city more visible and exciting. Associate Professor Dr Katharine Willis said: “This is about imagining the future

Devonport Park

of parks in Plymouth, and we will use innovative ways to reveal and value nature in the city. “Our world-leading expertise, in fields from marine research to smart cities, will help the wider partnership achieve that. “The Green Minds project is a truly city-wide collaboration that builds on our existing work on the Future Parks Accelerator project and the development of the first National Marine Park. It will put us nationally at the forefront of innovation when it comes to rethinking nature and how the public engage with it.”

Ed Whitelaw, from the Real Ideas Organisation, who will help the project by creating a 360° nature documentary film for the immersive dome at the forthcoming new Market Hall, said: “This is a great opportunity to bring together and showcase two of Plymouth’s finest assets, our natural environment and our creative digital industries.” A key part of this project will look at ensuring that Plymouth has a wider range of natural plants and flower by changing the way they are managed. Currently, the council keep most verges and green spaces tidy and manicured. In a lot of places, like parks or next to road junctions, this is entirely appropriate. But in other places, this affects biodiversity and has a detrimental effect on the city’s overall green lung. Money from this scheme will go towards setting up a community-led forum to help properly manage and maintain these assets. Another aim of the scheme is to introduce a city-wide culture change towards attitudes and behaviours to nature and the benefits it can bring to health and wellbeing. It will follow on from the successful Active Neighbourhoods Project in encouraging residents from some of Plymouth’s more urban areas to step outside and explore the place around. The National Trust at Saltram House will help to add their expertise to create a community orchard, while Devon Wildlife Trust will establish a Ranger service to support public engagement with the project. Finally, Plymouth College of Art students will benefit from using green spaces in Plymouth as real life case studies for their development of skills and practices. They will be working on permanent art installations, digital arts and urban design, all themed around ‘revealing urban nature’.

Get set to master the moors and make a difference for work of St Luke’s Hospice Cyclists of all ages are getting set for one of Devon’s boldest and most popular charity challenges this autumn, the Tour de Moor in aid of wellloved charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

The annual event – now in its tenth year – takes place on Sunday October 13, raising funds to help St Luke’s continue its specialist end of life care for terminally ill people, helping them to live well to the end. Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, the challenge in the rugged wilds of Dartmoor offers cyclists the opportunity of an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears. Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above! Alternatively, participants aged nine and above can take it down a gear and saddle up for 23km of tough riding over hills and through woods, and there’s also

the ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail that’s suitable for all the family. As well as Tour de Moor providing for every level of cycling ability, the money it raises means the highly skilled St Luke’s team can give not just expert medical care but also emotional, practical and spiritual support to families at the most vulnerable of times, whether their loved one is being cared for at home, in hospital or at its specialist unit at Turnchapel. Head of fundraising at St Luke’s, Penny Hannah, said: “Tour de Moor is always a terrific day. It’s fitness and muddy fun, and with three routes to choose from, it’s ideal for both families as well as more experienced cyclists who really want to push themselves. “Taking on the challenge is a great opportunity to get on your bike and help us provide vital care and support to patients and their families across the local

New Read Easy group is off to a flying start in Plymouth Readers may remember the recent article in the Plymouth Chronicle about the newly-formed Read Easy Plymouth group.

In the article, the people behind Read Easy Plymouth called for volunteers to train as one-to-one coaches to help local adults who want to learn to read. The response was absolutely fantastic and Read Easy Plymouth would like to thank everyone for their interest! The first coach training day ran successfully in July and Read Easy now have a waiting list of people ready to attend the next one. But the really exciting news is that they have now begun to do what they set out to do all along – teach local adults to learn to read. Their first readers are taking the first steps on a journey which will probably change their lives. If you didn’t see the earlier article, you may not know that some 2.4 million adults in the

UK either can’t read at all, or struggle with this most basic requirement of everyday life. There are all sorts of reasons why people don’t learn to read as children. Read Easy reading coaches minimise the possible stress and embarrassment involved in learning to read as an adult by providing confidential, one-to-one tuition at flexible times and in discreet and convenient places. People learn in privacy, at their own pace, and with the understanding support of their own dedicated reading coach. Can you help? Read Easy Plymouth is affiliated to Read Easy UK, a registered charity covering many areas of the country. There are vacancies on the enthusiastic, committed management team for other like-minded volunteers who have some time to spare and who can appreciate the importance of Read Easy’s work in the local community. Might that be you?

Read Easy is tremendously cost effective: as little as £3,000 a year will fund a Read Easy group. The administration and one-to-one coaching is all done by volunteers. So when they ask for support from local businesses, they’re not asking for a lot. And they’d be as happy to accept the offer of a free meeting room for regular team meetings, or a quiet space for a coach and reader pair to meet twice a week, as they would financial donations. The difference Read Easy makes is genuinely ‘life-changing’ – it’s a phrase that new readers use over and over again. It helps them in so many ways: • getting jobs or promotion, or attending training courses • becoming independent shoppers – of medicines, food and clothing – life’s essentials • voting in general and local elections for

the first time in their lives • reading books, newspapers and accessing the Internet /social media – completing online forms too. • campaigning with confidence for change in their local communities • having the confidence to go to the doctors or opticians for a check up • increased confidence and self-esteem, and improved mental health • supporting their children and grandchildren with reading and homework If you are a local business and would like to support Read Easy Plymouth in any way, please do get in touch! This is a truly great initiative, changing the lives of people living and working in the local community. What could be more worthwhile? Fresh look at services for city’s young people Plymouth City Council is taking a fresh look at how it works with families with children and young people in the city aged up to 19.

Families, professionals and young people are now being asked to feed back on plans to roll out a new string of Family Hubs and help shape the future of early help services in Plymouth. Plans are focused on creating an offer that allows families access to the support they need,

when they need it and without having to repeat their story to different people, so that families are empowered to be able to solve their problems in the future. The project considers how best to bring together the services already in Plymouth, including Children’s Centres and community based help, to deliver a seamless support offer to families, whatever the age of their children

It will build on successful family initiatives like SureStart, and try and pair them with services for older children, allowing individuals and families who may need extra support to get it at an earlier stage before problems get worse. Councillor Jemima Laing, Cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “This is an ambitious project but one that aims to improve the lives of the many people who access our

BEST ADVICE FOR ALL PARENTS AND BABIES Children’s centres in Plymouth have been awarded a Certificate of Commitment from Unicef UK, in recognition of the steps they are taking to improve care and increase the city’s breastfeeding rates.

The children’s centres, run by Barnardo’s, Action for Children and Lark, have joined forces and changed the way they support Plymouth’s parents. The changes ensure that no matter which organisation runs the centre, where in the city it is, or who parents speak to they will receive the same level of support. Centres now offer organised, systematic support for parents about infant feeding. All support and advice is based on best practice and evidence,

ensuring there is no confusion about how best to support your baby in those important first days, months and years. Ruth Harrell, Director of Public Health at Plymouth City Council said: “Whatever their choice of feeding method, we want to ensure that all parents and babies are supported to form a strong, loving relationship: this is the best start for every baby. “We do encourage breastfeeding as it protects babies against a wide range of serious illnesses in infancy, against cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes later in life and reduces the mother’s risk of some cancers. For those that can breastfeed it’s also easier, cheaper and less hassle than bottle feeding.” The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up by Unicef

and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides a practical and effective way for health services to improve the care provided for all mothers and babies. In the UK, the initiative works with health professionals to ensure that mothers and babies receive high-quality support to enable successful breastfeeding. The Certificate of Commitment recognises that a facility is dedicated to implementing recognised best practice standards. Sue Ashmore, Baby Friendly Initiative Programme Director, said: “We are delighted that Plymouth Children’s Centres have received this award. Surveys show us that most mothers want to breastfeed but don’t always get the support they need.”

services each year. “We know that children’s centres are very important to communities and parents of younger children, but we want to make sure that we can also serve parents of older children and also teenagers, who can experience particular challenges as they grow up.” While this project is firmly aimed at improving the quality of services in the city, there is also a savings target of £1 million, to be made over the next five years by bringing services together and working in a more effective way Councillor Laing added: “This is about doing things smarter. Some children’s centres are only used in the daytime. Some youth centres are only used at night. How can we make the best of the facilities we’ve got? “We’re really looking forward to the feedback from all of the stakeholders and basing the future of the service around them.” A series of co-design events will be run in the Lower Guildhall.

Running from 10am until 2pm on Monday September 16, Tuesday September 24 and Tuesday October 8, the sessions will allow residents and professionals to have their say and get involved. Places can be booked by e-mail at commissioningteam@plymouth.gov.uk

It’s important to just say ‘yes’ sometimes THE

By Ian Pilkington, Trustee of Cross Rhythms Plymouth

Experience This piece is about how having a big enough ‘yes’ frees us up to take on challenges and voice our concerns at the same time.

But first, some background: At the time of writing, we’re enjoying the last few weeks of summer, the kids are still off school, the Ashes against the old adversaries are in full swing and the early mornings and evenings are still light enough to enjoy. So, in keeping with the season we now have Christmas shopping on the various TV shopping channels, countdowns to Christmas are appearing in our Facebook timelines and society in general seems to have lost the plot when it comes to appropriate timing. I used to get grumpy about the increasingly early Christmas mentions. It was pointless, nobody listened and certainly no one stopped the madness. So, this year I decided to get on board and go one better, reading the story of the birth of

Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, in August. Out of ‘season’ I read it from a fresh perspective; I suspended my ingrained expectations of what the Christmas story is about, and looked at how people responded. In a nutshell, the angel Gabriel (not fluffy with wings and harp, but awesome enough to cause trembling fear in the people who saw him so that he had to tell them not to be afraid) tells both Zechariah (husband of childless Elizabeth) and Mary (not yet married to Joseph) that they’re going to have children. Mary and Zechariah both say, in effect, ‘no way, how can that happen!’ and we can’t blame them. Mary was a virgin, which is a pretty big obstacle. Ian Pilkington Zac and Liz (excuse me) are an old man and woman and have never been able to have children. Archangel Gabriel, messenger of God (he’s a really big deal as far as angels go) rebukes Zechariah and renders him speechless until the birth of his son John; in contrast

he explains some more to Mary about the miracle that will take place in her womb. Why treat them differently? Why so harsh with the old man? The clue is in Mary’s later words: ‘I am the servant of the Lord, let it be to me as you have said.’ Getting back to my opening paragraph, she had already said a huge ‘yes’ to God, way before Gabriel showed up with his news. “As His servant, I accept whatever He has for me” is how The Passion translation of the Bible puts it. She’s already made a decision that she’s ‘in’, whatever happens. Mary was a young woman whose heart was set on serving God; Zechariah was an old man, a priest who was ‘doing his job’ serving God. Maybe his heart wasn’t in it? Certainly he wanted some proof to persuade him of what Gabriel said. It reads like he’s saying: “convince me and I’ll believe you,”

compared to Mary saying: “I’m already in, but how on earth are we going to do this?” We can be like either of them; at different times I’ve been like both of them and I know which one works best (it’s not the one where I protect myself with cynicism and hesitancy.) Whether it’s in marriage and other committed relationships; or in a team situation where my part is needed for the success of everyone, it’s always better when I’ve made a strong yes to our goal upfront and decided not to go back on it. When the difficulties come it can be hard either way and sometimes in our humanity we get it wrong for all kinds of reasons, but there’s a much better chance of ultimate success when our hearts have said ‘yes’ to a purpose bigger than ourselves. The best place to put that ‘yes’ is in the hands of perfect love, which the Bible tells us is God Himself, who understands our weaknesses and wants the best for us.

Call for halt to cuts in number of firefighters Firefighter numbers in Devon and Somerset have fallen by more than 500 since 2010, according to the Fire Brigades Union.

The Union is calling on the Government to fund firefighter recruitment and reverse a decade of severe cuts to fire and rescue services. Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union said: “We cannot allow firefighters’ life-saving work to go unrecognised. The Chancellor must fund firefighter recruitment and end the years of real-term pay cuts for firefighters. Our communities need more firefighters - and the government needs to reflect the work they do in their paycheques.” The warning comes at a time when the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is consulting the public on proposed significant changes to the way the service operates. The consultation period runs until September 22 and an online consultation survey is now live on the Service’s website at www.dsfire.gov.uk. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Pete Bond said: “We really want to hear what the public have to say about the proposed service options, so please use this opportunity to engage with us and have your voice heard.” Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is considering closing or removing a number of low risk/low activity fire stations and fire engines, and reinvesting the savings into prevention work in the community. The FBU figures show that the number of firefighters dropped by 25 per cent between 2010 and 2019, with a reduction of 23 in the last 12 months. Matt Wrack added: “If this government is serious about tackling the climate emergency, it needs to invest in our frontline defences - and it is firefighters who are tackling wildfires and rescuing people stranded in flooding. Whaley Bridge will not be the last extreme weather event to stretch fire and rescue resources.”

Everyone Active to raise funds for cancer support

A local leisure operator is supporting a national charity to achieve its ambition of being ‘right there with everyone affected by cancer.’

Everyone Active has started a new twoyear partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. It has pledged to raise £140,000 for the charity during this time, which would be enough to fund two Macmillan professionals for the whole year, enabling them to provide support to more than 500 patients. The partnership officially launched in August and to mark the occasion, Everyone Active’s five leisure facilities in Plymouth swapped their traditional red, white and black brand colours in favour of Macmillan’s green to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Colleagues at the Plymouth Life Centre, Brickfields Sports Centre, Plympton Swimming Pool, Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Swimming Pool, which are all managed on behalf of Plymouth City Council, donned green clothes, wigs and face paint in honour of Macmillan. Players from Plymouth Argyle also visited the Life Centre to donate home game tickets and signed merchandise for customers to win as part of a charity competition. Everyone Active aims to support the causes that impact its colleagues and customers, which is why it has chosen to

Games in the garden, Pimms and mock Sangria and a delicious lunch proved to be a successful fundraising formula for a group of Plymouth Soroptimists.

The group gathered at a member’s home for the event and raised over £400 for local women’s charities. Members enjoyed croquet, table tennis, table football and boules during the afternoon. Plymouth Soroptimist President Mrs Jenny Jarvis said: “We all had a great time and were delighted to combine a lovely relaxing afternoon with raising money for the local women’s charities that we support. We were delighted that our oldest member, now aged 97, and a visiting Soroptimist from Flagstaff, USA, was with us to join in the fun and fund raising.”

Law firm takes action against rare disorder

Action Duchenne, a national charity that researches into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has received a cheque for £2,300 from the staff of Plymouth law firm, GA Solicitors.

Action Duchenne was named the firm’s charity of the year after being voted in by 74 employees. Over the last 12 months, it has benefitted from a wide variety of fundraising efforts by the team such as dress down days, bake sales, quiz nights and sporting activities. The charity supports research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a mutation in the dystrophin gene that over time causes muscles to weaken and waste away. Since 2001, Action Duchenne has supported families affected by Duchenne, researched and improved life expectancy for patients and campaigned and educated the public on the disease. The money raised by GA Solicitors’ team will be put towards developing effective treatments, building a community by uniting families, raising awareness and helping create a more inclusive society. GA Solicitors has a strong track record of supporting charities having last year fundraised £3,300 for local bereavement charity Little Things & Co. Stephen Ramsden, managing partner at GA Solicitors, said: “Action Duchenne is a deserving small charity that is not only looking to improve the lives of those living with Duchenne, but also

supports their families and creates a sense of community. “The team has worked hard to raise such a large amount of money that no doubt will make a real difference to the charity and the amount of work it can undertake” Samantha Turner, community fundraiser at Action Duchenne, added: “We have been overwhelmed by the support from the team at GA Solicitors. They’ve raised an incredible amount which is a testament to their dedication to our cause. The money raised will make a huge

difference to the lives of all those living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and on behalf of our entire community I would like to thank them for their life changing support.” GA Solicitors’ nominated charity for 2019/20 is Plymouth Hospitals Charity’s Keep Me Close appeal. Run by Derriford Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Keep Me Close aims to support the parents of newborn babies that need to stay in ICU for a long time by providing accommodation in the hospital, close to their babies, at a very difficult time.

When Harley Mortlock, from Tamerton Foliot, spotted a vacancy at Mercedes Benz in Plymouth, she applied - but assumed the job would go to a man: “The fact that I got the job shows that times are changing,” she says. Harley successfully became the first female Technician for the South West division of Mercedes-Benz after swapping fixing hair for fixing cars, and completing full-time level 1 and level 2 diplomas in light vehicle maintenance at City College Plymouth. Harley always wanted to be a mechanic and growing up loved helping her dad to fix motorbikes, but being female thought she’d never be able to get a job in a garage, so became a qualified hairdresser instead. She said: “I love the technical side of mechanics and am so

Plymouth rehab centre transforms 350 lives Nearly 350 Royal Marines and Sailors have been helped by a unique rehabilitation centre in Plymouth during its first ten years.

Set up in September 2009 principally to help commandos permanently scarred by battle recover from their wounds – or re-adjust their lives – Hasler Naval Service Recovery Centre now helps men and women from across the Forces with long-term conditions, injuries and illnesses. Most injured or naval personnel are nursed and supported back to full fitness while still serving with their units, but more serious cases require longer term treatment and care away from their units and ships so they can concentrate solely on rehabilitation. Originally established as Hasler Company – named after Cockleshell Hero and disability rights campaigner Major ‘Blondie’ Hasler – the recovery centre has moved on from mostly treating marines to supporting as many Royal Navy sailors and the occasional soldier or airman. Those recuperating receive expert medical help, physiotherapy, moral support and career guidance to prepare them physically, mentally and professionally as well as possible for resuming their careers or starting a new life in the civilian world. “Each day starts in the gym, most of the marines have physical injuries which require rehab and individual therapy,” explained Captain Mark Woosey, the Royal Marine in charge of the centre. “We have an amazing team of physiotherapists and exercise/rehabilitation instructors who lead a programme including therapy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, yoga and tai chi.” Afternoons are devoted to what the 20-strong team at Hasler call a ‘rolling recovery programme’: activities which can provide a welcome distraction from the hard work of rehab and treatment. “Getting back to fitness after a major injury or illness can be a long, hard and sometimes

dull process,” Captain Woosey added. “They can be of direct help in an individual’s transition or recovery – they can even help show exactly what they are capable of, reminding them they can still be the person they may fear has been lost through the injury or illness. “You only need to see the face of a chronically-ill service person competing in a triathlon, playing sitting volley ball or surfing to realise the great value they have to morale and rehabilitation.”

homes in Derriford and North edition

The Derriford and North Chronicle is delivered door to door every month to homes in Ernesettle, West Park, Honicknowle, Austin Farm, Crownhill, Manadon, Whitleigh, Southway, Derriford, Estover, Mainstone and Leigham. The October edition of the Plymouth Chronicle in Derriford and North Plymouth will be published on October 4 with a copy

In addition, there’s the chance to compete with the US Marine Corps in its Wounded Warrior Games trials, take historical tours of the commandos’ spiritual home around Achnacarry or organise a music festival – all designed to raise morale, improve team spirit, motivate and encourage people. Although the Hasler team is based in HMS Drake in Plymouth, support is provided to personnel – whose conditions range from combat wounds through chronic illnesses, mental health issues to terminal cases – at the new Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall, near Loughborough, and as far afield as Scotland and the East Coast. The goal is to help personnel resume their military careers. Where that proves impossible, staff focus on developing a person’s skills and preparing them for life outside the military. One Royal Marine who’s benefited from Hasler described the centre as ‘a gamechanger that allows individuals to either return to their profession or make that very difficult transition into the civilian world a little bit easier. It has equipped me with the required tools and contacts to move on.’ “The atmosphere is very much a ‘Band of Brothers and Sisters’. Though we all have slight differences with our personal conditions, Hasler allows us to help and support each other – vital in everyone’s recovery, which not only includes us, but all
