Celebrating city’s fishing heritage Fishing helped establish Plymouth as a leading international port - and the importance of the fishing industry to the city’s economy cannot be overstated. Plymouth Fish Market in Sutton Harbour is the second largest in the country, selling 6,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish every year, with over 80 different species of fish on offer. Plymouth is also the administrative port for 500 fishing vessels and has the largest number of fishermen in the UK. A common misconception is that the UK fishing industry remains in decline, yet all the evidence points in the other direction. Over the past 10 years the fishing industry has seen an upturn with the UK fleet profits being the highest across all EU member states. With such an abundance of fresh fish on our doorsteps it’s no wonder that Plymouth has some of the best seafood restaurants and takeaways, not only in Devon, but also the rest of the country. Eating a selection of different fresh fish and seafood regularly is said to help protect us from an array of serious diseases including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, depression and arthritis. It also helps us to maintain healthly skin and brain function. So it’s totally appropriate that Plymouth’s fishing heritage will be celebrated in September when the Plymouth Seafood Festival returns for its eighth year to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. The free festival promises to be a real treat for the whole family, so why not take advantage of all the good things on offer. We have a special feature on the Plymouth Seafood Festival on our centre pages which provides a lot more information about the event. Hope you enjoy this edition.

The expertise that ma Hair & Beauty Salon so

Gemma Hayes with customer Lindsey

Good news travels fast. Just ask hair extension and hair loss replacement specialist Gemma Hayes of GG’s Hair & Beauty Salon - her customers come from all over Devon and Cornwall to benefit from her expertise. GG’s, on the corner of Mutley Plain and Houndiscombe Road, is one of the few salons in the region that offers hair replacement for both men and women. And, says Gemma, for many customers, the results are life transforming: “A lot of women cry when they see the end results, they’re so happy,” said Gemma. “It makes my job so satisfying, knowing what it means for people to get their hair back and looking so good. Clients tell me that they regain their self-confidence as a result. It’s not an overstatement to say that it’s helping them to transform their lives.” She added: “We have clients from as far away as St Ives, Falmouth, Bude and Bideford and they’re so pleased that they’ve found a solution to their hair loss that has such great results.” GG’s Hair & Beauty Salon offers the mesh integration system, which encourages the hair to grow back. terms, a parting and sheets of hair are sewn underneath the mesh and pulled through to be attached to micro rings. A fringe can be sewn as well, if wanted. Women’s hair replacement is based on a length of 16 inches, but longer lengths are available. The system is tailored to each individual, based on the cause of their hair loss. The volume of hair growth will vary depending on the type of hair loss. With regular maintenance and correct after care, the system will last for 1-2 years. “I had one lady who’d had alopecia for 23 years and her hair grew back so well underneath the system that I could use her hair for the hair extensions. We then applied a normal weave to her natural hair, so the cost of her maintenance went from £150 to £40. She is still wearing her weave after 4 months!” For men, maintenance appointments are required every four to six weeks after the system is applied, ensuring the hair blends naturally. For women, maintenance is every six to eight weeks, and, says Gemma: “The hair is extremely natural looking.” The service has been particularly helpful for people who have suffered a medical condition or undergone cancer treatment, as well as for men and women with naturally

thinning hair. People who have gone through transition have also sought assistance with hair loss. For everyone who steps into GG’s, complete care is assured: “We’re a friendly salon, and we have private rooms as well as the main salon, so clients can be confident about discretion. And everyone is welcome.” Gemma offers a free consultation initially. If the client decides to go ahead, a deposit is paid at that stage and a specific hair loss system is prepared for their individual requirements. Fitting the system takes 90 minutes for men and three hours for women. Prices start from £595, while maintenance appointments are from £150. Finance is available for those wanting to spread the payments: “People would pay three times as much for this system if they went to Bristol or London, so these are very competitive prices,” said Gemma. “An advantage for women is that they no longer need to get their hair cut or coloured and they only have to wash their hair once a week.” Gemma set up GG’s Hair & Beauty Salon in 2011 and this August marks the sixth anniversary of the salon opening on Mutley Plain. The salon offers all cuts and colours at affordable prices and is being kept busier than ever this year with the continuing popularity of balayage. Clients can have their hair coloured and extensions fitted in the same sitting. And, for the best hair care possible, Gemma stocks products by leading brands, Olaplex and Moroccanoil. The salon also specialises in hair extensions: “We offer our signature weaves which only take an hour to apply,” said Gemma, “so no more sitting around for three or four hours!” A full head weave lasts for 12 months with correct after care and costs from £230. Maintenance appointments are every 6-8 weeks and are from £40. Gemma has been a hair replacement specialist for three years and is doing more extensive training to increase her expertise further in applying a system for women with hair loss: “We’re already a leading specialist salon in the whole of the South West, and that’s down to our reputation for excellence,” said Gemma. “Our commitment to the best possible training and qualifications is part of that.” Visit the website for a full list of services, prices and opening times, including late opening hours. You’ll also find GG’s Hair & Beauty Salon on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, where there are 380 customer recommendations. Phone or email Gemma to book an appointment or free consultation.

When Amanda Mitchell opened her Bora Beads shop on the Barbican in February, little did she know that within just a few months, she’d be opening a second shop in the city centre. The new shop, next to Santander in Armada Way, has twice as much wall space as the shop in Southside Street - which means Amanda is now busier than ever, as she hand-makes almost all the beaded jewellery and beaded accessories for the two outlets. Amanda opened the city centre shop in late July, moving into the unit vacated by the vegan store Ethica, which has taken larger premises just around the corner in Cornwall Street: “I thought it was a huge gamble opening the first shop, so I didn’t expect to open a second one at all,” said Amanda. “But it has gone so well that I really wanted a city centre location. “There aren’t enough hours in the day at the moment, though. When I’m not in the shop, I’m making more items - I was doing that until 9pm last night! But I’m enjoying every minute of it. I don’t see it as work.” It seems that people in Plymouth just can’t get enough of beads, especially the light reflective ‘Miracle’ beads: “They’re hugely popular and have been for a few years now. In fact, we get people in from all over the country buying them. It’s girls, boys, men and women, everyone. There’s something for everyone. My youngest customer was a three-year-old girl who had a VIP beading session on her birthday, and my oldest customer is a lady in her 90s. “The guys and women like our semi-precious stones. Women bring their dresses or outfits in, to match them with accessories. And if someone is looking for something specific in terms of colour or size, they just need to ask.” It’s a complete change for Amanda, who has taken a career break from the Land Registry after 31 years: “I’ve run small businesses before, alongside my work at the Land Registry.

WOMEN AT WORK

award winning restaurant • award winning marina With all the best local produce from land and sea, Jolly Jacks is the place to be. A warm welcome and ambience we guarantee, a sunny terrace to enjoy the sea. From breakfast to dinner and all in-between, from 9 till 9 we reign supreme. Fine wines, real ales and spirits galore, And then I worked for a while as a consultant, attending beading events. I really enjoyed that, but I wanted to be more involved and do more things - so here I am! I feel as though I’ve found my dream job.” Amanda has created the look of a sweet shop, with the colourful beads in traditional sweet jars lined up on shelves alongside the ‘ready-made’ jewellery she has created: “I wanted to offer something different, a bit unique,” said Amanda. “The look of the shop is part of that.” In one area of the shop, there is a ‘creative corner’ where people can pop in and design their own bespoke beaded items. Some of the designs created by customers are so inspired, Amanda is now making them herself: “A boy came in and created a bracelet using beads with camouflage colours. I thought ‘what a great idea’, so I’ve done some of those too! “Although the shop offers the items I’ve made, I actively encourage people to choose their own beads,” she explained. “They can add a charm if they wish, and they’re all threaded onto the elastic, ready to wear. So, it’s their very own design, and it’s another way of offering something a little bit over and above the usual.” The extra space at the new shop is enabling Amanda to expand the choice of beads, semi-precious stones, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, anklets and earrings. She is also growing the range of lanyards, car charms, scarves, hair bows, personalised accessories, wicker hearts for the home and, new in, umbrellas with pretty designs. The personalised water bottles are going down especially well - as are personalised teethers. The creative space can be booked for VIP beading sessions and parties for children or adults. Ring or email Amanda or message her on the Bora Beads Facebook page to book a party. Adults are welcome to bring a bottle of wine to their parties during the evening sessions. And there’s a final word for the woman who’s made all of this possible. Because while Amanda is busy at the city centre shop, her mum Jean is taking care of the one in Southside Street: “I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this if it wasn’t for my mum, she’s been amazing.”

FOOD MATTERS Tanya and Ryan Marsland with the coveted AA Rosette

Relaxed dining and local fare on the menu at award-winning Fig Tree @ 36 It’s been quite a year for Ryan Marsland and Tanya Poole, the couple behind the Fig Tree @ 36 restaurant in Stonehouse - capped recently with the award of an AA rosette for culinary excellence. It’s the latest in a line of awards for the family-owned restaurant, which prides itself on its winning combination of informal, affordable dining and the fact that everything is made in-house - including breads, smoked butter, flavoured oils, ketchup, jams, chutneys, and ice-cream. The Fig Tree @ 36 was named the Best Restaurant in Devon in the 2018-19 Food & Drink Devon awards and is listed in the prestigious Michelin and Trencherman’s Guides. It has also won Taste of the West Gold two years running. All this, says Ryan, is down to the quality of the food and the thought that goes into each dish: “People assume that with so many awards, we must be a fine dining restaurant, but we’re not, far from it. We’re all about creating flavoursome food with locally sourced produce. It’s as simple as that.”

September marks the second anniversary of the restaurant in Admiralty Street, just up the road from the Royal William Yard. This year, Ryan has introduced several new dishes including the skate wing dish that wowed the AA rosette inspector on his unannounced visit: “This dish sums us up completely,” said Ryan. “It has local skate wings, Devon clams, Cornish mussels, chestnut mushrooms and braised lettuce. It’s a one-pot dish and when you lift the lid off the pot, the aroma is like ‘wow!’ It just smacks you in the face. When it’s plated up, it looks really elegant.” And what about that AA rosette? “It was a complete surprise because you never know when they’re going to visit,” said Tanya. “We were really busy that evening and he came in and had the skate. Afterwards, he asked to see Ryan. He introduced himself and at the end of the discussion, he told us we’d won a rosette. Typical of Ryan, the first thing he said was ‘right, let’s try for the two rosettes next!” The skate dish which Ryan added: impressed the AA inspector “The rosette is just a nod to say: ‘You’re doing a nice thing here’. We’re one of only a small group locally that has a rosette, but the most important thing for us is to keep on

FOOD MATTERS doing the food we believe in, at a good price, and in a nice atmosphere with friendly staff.” Another new dish recently added to the specials board is Ryan’s chicken, ham and leek filo pie: “We introduced it as a starter and it flew out, so we’re also doing it as a main,” said Ryan. “It’s another great example of the food we do - not fancy, but full of flavours.” Ryan and Tanya change the menu two or three times a week, to make the most of fresh local produce. One of the newest mains was actually suggested by a customer: “We started doing a seafood vongole, with Fowey mussels and River Exe clams, cooked with chilli, garlic, parsley, lemon and olive oil and served with our home-made pasta,” explained Ryan. “One lady said: ‘That sounds great - I wish you did a vegetarian version of it’. “One of the beauties of being an independent chef-owner restaurant, and making everything fresh to order, is that we can change the ingredients. So we made her the vongole with courgettes, summer peas and tomato confit. It was amazing, and we’ve now got it on our menu.” Ryan says the success of the restaurant has given him fresh confidence to introduce these new dishes - and to source almost everything from local producers: “The butcher was late the other day because he’d been delivering a calf!” The restaurant is also switching its drinks menu from mainstream suppliers to local and regional beers, ciders, spirits, and soft drinks. The wine list, meanwhile, features English wines, such as Devon’s Sharpham amd Dorset’s Furleigh Estate. Tanya is using the regional drinks to create a ‘local meets local’ cocktails menu, The Fig Tree is now stocking a range of local which includes wines, beers and spirits Salcombe Blush, featuring Salcombe Start Point gin and Luscombe tonic, and Cornish Treasure Chest, with Deadman’s Fingers coconut rum and Cornish Orchards elderflower presse. Main courses are from £15, while two courses on the set menu are £20, or £25 for three courses. The menu is 98% gluten-free, and most dishes can be offered as GF. Lunch is 12-2.30 Wednesdays to Saturdays and 12-3 on Sundays; evening service is from 5.30 Tuesdays to Saturdays with flexible closing times. The restaurant’s page on Facebook has over 1,100 followers and a 5-star customer rating. Visitors to the social media pages get the chance to take part in the ‘Figging Friday’ competition where the prize is a three-course meal for two with a bottle of house wine or two cocktails. “It’s created a great buzz on social media,” said Tanya. “It’s as easy as 1-2-3: people just need to like the post, tag their dining companion and book a table for Friday evening. Then, on the evening, we reveal who’s won.” Keep an eye out, too, for the Fig Tree @ 36 Christmas hampers, full of home-made goodies created by Ryan: “We have a selection of produce that we make for the restaurant, but which is also available to take home, with 24-hour notice, such as biscotti, fig leaf oil and chocolate honeycomb, said Tanya. “One of our customers suggested making Christmas hampers, and we’ll be doing that in December.” The couple, who have two young children, Daisy and Arthur, have another big event planned for the New Year - their wedding in January. Another reason to raise a glass!

Tim catches a break from back and foot pain

Tim Lynn, a commercial fisherman from Hallsands, near Kingsbridge, suffered from numbness in both feet coupled with back pain for eight painful years. Then he made what he describes as a life-changing visit to Foot Solutions. “I spend my summer fishing bass from Hallsands, and using pots for crab, from my 14 foot boat. In the winter I work in construction and both jobs were becoming difficult,” said Tim, 52. He visited specialists looking for answers and even had an MRI scan but was told that his back was that of a man twenty years older and he would just have to live with it. No-one gave him any explanation for the numbness in his feet. “I was beginning to wonder if I could keep on working,” said Tim. “I was taking painkillers every day to help me keep going. I couldn’t do the amount of work I used to, I was tired all the time and I was getting unsteady on my feet due to the numbness. “My brother told me to go to Foot Solutions, after he had been referred there by the hospital for his own health problems. That day changed my life.” Tim was seen by one of the Pedorthists at the Royal Parade shop, who carried out a free foot health assessment where he presented with symptoms of numbness, ball of foot pain, hip and back pain. To begin with, his shoes were fitted with over the counter arch supports. “It was immediately better,” said Tim, “my posture changed as well as my walk. Over a short time my back pain almost disappeared too, and I was able to stop taking painkillers.” Custom fitted arch supports were ordered and Tim now uses these in his everyday shoes. Foot Solutions also provides a wide range of Emma safety footwear - the only shop in the South West to offer this safety footwear - and Tim uses them every day, reporting that they’re as good now as when they were new, nearly a year ago. Having the feeling return to his feet has been a great boon for both his jobs. “My work boots feel like I’m wearing slippers,” says Tim, “I can work all day now and I have totally regained control when I’m on my boat. I have a new frame of mind, I just want to go for it again.” Tim’s wife, Rose, has also benefited, saying he’s a much better person now he’s not in pain! For a free appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

Seafood lovers are in for a treat this September, as Plymouth Seafood Festival returns for its 8th year to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. This free festival on September 14 and 15 is a vibrant celebration of the incredible sustainably caught fresh fish and seafood on offer in Britain’s Ocean City and with plenty of fun and entertainment throughout the two days, there’s something for everyone. Visitors will be able to watch as some of the region’s top chefs create spectacular dishes in the cookery theatre. They’ll be taking to the stage from 10am each day of the festival, cooking up delicious seafood dishes. There are also opportunities to watch demonstrations, from cracking crab to the traditional craftsmanship of Lobster ‘Withy’ pot making, using willow. Look out for the trawler boats, moored up in the harbour, alongside Quay Square. Stalls will line The Parade and Quay Square, selling delicious fresh dishes to enjoy on the day, as well as some special treats to take away – you’ll find everything from street food and shellfish to cheeses, local gins and refreshing ciders. CATERed will also be hosting their hugely popular Kids Kitchen, so children can get hands-on with making some tasty dishes, all for free, or join in the crabbing competition on the Sunday at the Boathouse Café. Visitors can head to the Plymouth Trawler Agents marquee to see a display of over 45 different local species of fish from local waters. They’ll demonstrate how to fillet fish and visitors will be able to ask the experts any questions they may have. There will also be the opportunity to discover what it’s like to be at the bottom of the ocean and see the marine ife, with the National Marine Aquarium’s virtual reality experience.

Japanese influence on talented artist’s work An exhibition of ceramics, textiles and illustrations by a talented Devon artist opens at 45 Southside Gallery in the Barbican in September. Artist Scotty Gillespie lives and works in Exeter having recently graduated from a BA (Hons) illustration degree at Plymouth University and gained a first for his project called TenderStem. He works with many different mediums including textiles, digital illustration and ceramics. His experience of studying in Japan taught him that illustration does not need to be confined to the flat surface of paper and print. This way of thinking opened up his practice, expanding and challenging what contemporary illustration looks like and how it can function within different mediums and cultures. Scotty said: “I love creating work that evokes fun, whimsy, playfulness and tenderness. My main focus is to take the viewer on a magical journey and make people smile.” Throughout, his work evokes a sensitive core of acceptance, feelings and a celebration of individual uniqueness. His work is an expression of his passion to look and appreciate the little things in life. This exhibition showcases

Scotty’s degree work of illustrated ceramic pieces, prints, textiles and installations including new works. The exhibition at 45 Southside Gallery runs from Saturday September 21 and continues until October 27. The opening view will be held on September 21 from 3pm to 6pm and all are welcome.

Calling talented youngsters for Barbican Theatre’s Performance Training classes

Exhibitions and Other Events

Photo: Dom Moore

Barbican Theatre Performance Training classes offer something a bit different. Young people aged between 12 and 25 choose the subject, they devise, they choreograph, they make the performances happen – as actors, dancers, technicians, producers, directors, even workshop leaders. The work created is by, with and for young people. The theatre wants to create unusual, challenging, relevant,

high quality performances and need the best young artists in the city to help them do that. Many members of Performance Training go on to train at some of the top performing arts schools, colleges and universities in the country. The next Performance Training year begins on September 16 and there are free tasters and auditions at Barbican Theatre across four weeks. Free tasters are as follows: Dance Junction for ages 12 to 16 on September 16 and 23 from 5.15pm to 6.45pm and Theatre Junction, also for ages 12 to 16 on September 16 and 23 from 7pm to 8.30pm, plus September 17 and 24 from 4.30pm to 6pm. Free auditions: COMPANY Dance for ages 16 to 25 on September 24 and October 1 from 6.15pm to 9.15pm COMPANY b Theatre for ages 16 to 25 on September 25 and October 2 from 6.15pm to 9.15pm Auditions are workshop based so there is no need to have anything prepared. As well as creating and performing in their own performances, members of Barbican Theatre Performance Training will have numerous other exciting opportunities throughout the year. These will include: Traverse Youth Dance Festival at The House in October, Illuminate Festival in November, Barbican Theatre & The Wheel’s production of A Grimm Christmas in November and December, Respect Festival and Plymouth Fringe Festival in May and June 2020. The programme will also include Barbican Theatre’s summer production in July and August next year - plus many more opportunities that arise throughout the year. FORCE is Barbican Theatre’s training programme for aspiring arts leaders aged 18 and over to develop skills in dance or theatre facilitation and teaching, technical production or arts management. The next FORCE open evening is on October 17 between 7pm and 8.30pm at the Barbican Theatre. There will be the chance to meet FORCE’s core team and practitioners, chat through what you would like to achieve and hear about plans for the FORCE Arts Leadership year-long programme.

GARDENING MATTERS By Fiona Newton and Rebecca Rose of Plymouth Garden Centre Thirty years ago - and way ahead of the times - we installed a bore hole several hundred feet into an aquifer, or underground lake, so that we could access the fresh, naturally filtered water underneath the garden centre. We use it for watering our plants, with the water draining away back into the ground, filtering through the rock layers and back into the aquifer. People often ask us about our water usage, especially during hot weather, so there’s the answer! Water conservation is highly important to our eco-system, and you can help too! By installing a waterbutt, you can harvest rainwater which can be much better for your plants (and also your water bill)! Attach water butts to the down pipes of your house and utilise other buildings such as sheds, greenhouses and garages. Even small gardens can collect rainwater using a Slimline water butt. And for larger gardens, multiple water butts can be connected together to store even more! We have put together our top watering tips so that you can save time, money and the environment, all at the same time!

How we for the e

What else do we do for the environment?

We aim to keep our Carbon Footprint as low as we possibly can, and one way we do that is the use of local growers for our plants. Not only does this mean that carbon emissions are greatly reduced by the reduction in transport time, but also our plants have been grown in the same environmental conditions as your garden. Where some plants aren’t available from our local suppliers, we will look to our British suppliers. One of our main UK plant suppliers follows the same desire to be environmentally friendly by using wood chips from waste timber as fuel in a biomass boiler to heat the greenhouses, collecting rainwater in a reservoir for watering, and using biological rather than chemical controls. You may have heard in the news of recent times, that black pots used for potting plans, are not ‘kerbside’ recyclable. Happy Plants, who are leading a change in environmental sustainability and reduction of plastic plant pots, are beginning to use other colours, and as long as they are made from polypropylene, they are fully recyclable. Lookout for these blue pots in-store and don’t forget to pop it in the recycling bin after planting! One of our favourites are the new green plant packs. Made using recycled drinks bottles, they are fully recyclable, and

Plant of the month - Cyclamen Such a delicate looking plant, but don’t be fooled by its appearance! Often found growing in the wild, the hardy varieties are one of the few plants that will not only survive a dry shade (one of the most challenging garden spots) but will also tolerate a hard frost (although they may lose their blooms, they will flower again with milder weather). There are around 20 different varieties in colours ranging from white to pink, red or purple, and look spectacular for winter colour when little else is flowering. Cyclamen and Bees We love our pollinator friendly plants at the garden centre,

and the cyclamen is one of our favourites. In the South of the UK particularly, winter pollinator-friendly plants are incredibly important. The milder climate, combined with the increase of towns and cities with winter-flowering gardens and plantations, have increased the numbers of winter bees. One species of bee, the Bombus terrestris has stopped hibernating completely in the South of the UK, whilst Northern colonies still do! Although you wouldn’t notice without looking underneath, the petals of the cyclamen are actually completely folded back on themselves, with the centre of the flower visible only from underneath. And if that wasn’t enough, Cyclamen is currently on offer in store, three plants for just £6!

With Plymouth Garden Centre

can all do our bit environment... Watering Tips Here are our top tips for watering:

• Use greywater (water from baths/sinks/washing machines etc) to top up your water butt or use directly in the garden. Most household soaps and detergents are harmless to plants so are safe to use, just don’t use water that contains bleach, disinfectant, dishwasher salts or stronger cleaners. • Water late in the evening to avoid evaporation, plants will be able to drink more during the cooler night than during the warmth of the day. If this is not possible, water very early in the morning instead. • Use water storing crystals in your pots and baskets to decrease the frequency of watering. • After giving the garden a good soak, mulch beds and borders with bark or fresh compost. This will help keep

we love the fact that they have their own story to tell. You will start to see more and more changes to our plastic pots in store as more suppliers get onboard. Rest assured, where possible we look for recyclable packaging, after all, we are all doing our part, so don’t forget to rinse and recycle your recyclables! And that’s not all! You may have noticed our shopping bags contain the Mobius Loop symbol (the three arrows). This, often mis-understood symbol, means that the product is actually recyclable. We also have a ‘Zero To Landfill’ policy by using a company that sorts, recycles, and reuses waste products. It is the only company in the South West who operate the ‘Zero To Landfill’ policy. We also offer a range of products in store to help you be as environmentally friendly as possible at home. One favourite - there are many - is the Bokashi Composter by Hozelock. All your organic kitchen waste (including meat, fish and dairy) can go into this kitchen composter and produce a liquid fertiliser within five days, and compost within three weeks! The hermetic airtight seal also prevents any odour release. So, remember, recycle where possible, re-use when you can, and make saving the environment your mission too! www.cornerstonevision.com

plant roots cooler and lock in moisture. • Mature plants will need watering less, a good soaking once a week should suffice. Newer or struggling plants will need watering more often to help them establish. • Established plants can be watered from above with a hose or a rose watering can, but it is best for young plants if you water only soil beneath. Only the roots can take in water, however some leaves are designed to channel water down directly towards the roots. Leaves do still need moisture however and if the air is particularly dry there can be some benefit to wetting the leaf. This should only be done in late evening however, when there is no risk of the strong sunlight scorching the leaves.

TRAVEL MATTERS

Discover a little piece of paradise in The Maldives Our own holiday this year was to one of my favourite places in the world – The Maldives. The Maldives are picture perfect island resorts in the Indian Ocean – the ultimate luxury beach escape for an extra special honeymoon, couples or families. Each resort is reached by either speedboat, sea plane or a larger aircraft for the By Travel Expert southernmost islands. The time difference is GMT + five hours. Flying time from London is approximately 12 hours on direct flights which operate in the winter from November, or slightly longer if going via Dubai/ Colombo, ideal for a two-centre holiday. The average temperature throughout the year is 25-30C. Peak season is December to April, when it is drier and hotter, but we travelled in June, which is said to be out of season, although the temperature was still in the 30s. The manta rays (best seen between June and October), whale sharks, turtles, pods of dolphins and the abundance of fantastic marine life just moments from the shore, are one of the main reasons for visiting any one of the many islands to snorkel or dive. Most islands have garden or beach villas as well as water villas with direct access into the ocean. The hospitality from all of the staff is superb. Nothing is too much trouble and they all endeavour to make your holiday the best that it can be. My wife and I have travelled to the Maldives previously staying on Constance Moofushi, a very small To an infinity pool and beyond! island that you can walk around in five minutes! There was a subtle Robinson Crusoe theme and ‘no shoe’ rule there. It was so liberating! It’s one of the Maldives’ finest resorts, with a premium all-inclusive concept. Constance Moofushi’s beauty is paralleled only by the highest standards of service and quality. The facilities are stylish yet natural. The sand-floored Manta restaurant offered buffet-style dining, with numerous live cooking stations serving up dishes including Italian

classics and Maldivian specialities. The restaurant has an overwater section as well as the equally relaxed à la carte Alizée beachfront grill – both perfect to enjoy the stunning Indian Ocean views. We spent most of our time by the beach bar and infinity pool, sipping cocktails made by our friendly barman. The three large lagoons and coral garden surrounding the island are wonderful for snorkelling and diving, and the resort lies within half an hour of 32 of the Maldives’ best dive sites. The stunning mile long sandbank stretches to the very tip of the island. Kuramathi was another island we stayed on which had many restaurants and lots of activities. Being one of the Maldives’ most popular resorts, it’s perfect if you’re looking for variety alongside relaxation. Here, pathways weave through lush foliage, leading to the excellent facilities that are dotted around this large island. There are two oceanfront infinity pools, plus a lagoon-style pool shaded by palm trees, and snorkelling on the house reef is possible straight from the beach. Dining was at a buffet restaurant determined by the location of your villa. The popular Island Barbecue on the beach was fun, Siam Garden served up authentic Thai dishes, which were excellent, and fine dining at Duniye in the heart of the island was superb. Of the bars, our favourite was the Sand Bar, where you can sink into a comfy beanbag with a cocktail and bury your toes in the sand, or the chic Champagne Loft. Another time we stayed on Cinnamon Dhonveli. This island showcases the diversity of the Indian Ocean, with a dramatic surf break with crashing waves to one side of the island, and a calm lagoon for snorkelling on the other. Towards the end of 2019, most rooms and facilities will have a fresh new look as the island is undergoing a major refurbishment There’s a casual, laid-back vibe here. For dining, you’ll be allocated one of the three restaurants. All are buffet-style, with a wide choice of International dishes and live cooking stations. Raalhu Bar’s outdoor deck overlooks a renowned surf point, while the Raiyvilaa Bar is the perfect spot for watching the amazing sunsets. We watched surfers riding the waves from one side of the island, and black tip reef sharks and turtles gliding through the still water on the other side.

TRAVEL MATTERS This year we stayed at the secluded southern tip of The Maldives, on an island south of the equator. It even runs on its own island time so that guests can enjoy an extra hour of sunshine. The luxurious Shangri-la Villingili is the largest Maldivian island, being one-anda-half miles long and having three natural lagoons, a jungle trail and the Maldives’ largest nine-hole golf course. The hospitality, as always, was exceptional. We stayed in a private villa with our own pool for a few nights, then moved to a water villa, with steps directly into the beautiful crystal-clear Indian ocean. There’s a huge sense of space for total escapism. Rooms and facilities are dotted around the dense jungle, and on the beachfront, so that it never feels crowded, and each room comes with bicycles which is a great fun way to get around. There are also golf carts that you can request if you have a ‘few too many’ at the bar!! For dining, Javvu is the all-day dining restaurant, set along the shoreline. Dr Ali’s is inspired by the travels of a local Maldivian doctor, taking you on a culinary journey with dishes from the Arabian Gulf, Indian Ocean and South China Sea, while Fashala focuses on Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. There are three bars including the M-Lounge – the perfect beachfront venue to enjoy the sunset and sound of chilled tunes. The restorative CHI Spa is the perfect place to indulge in a treatment. My wife had the ‘signature massage’ using hot

sea shells and the beautician sings a ‘lullaby’ which sent her to sleep. The Shangri-La’s location means that as well as private island life, guests can also experience a more authentic, cultural side to the Maldives. There are four local islands just a short boat ride away, where you can visit villages and farms with a local guide. There’s also a surprising British military history on nearby Gan. During World War II it was established as a Royal Naval base and then served as a Royal Air Force station. Of course, there’s also the world-class snorkelling and diving that the Maldives is known for, with incredible coral reefs and nearby dive sites including the British Loyalty shipwreck, sunk at the end of World War II. On one of our excursions we snorkelled for a piece of coral and planted it on a ‘table’ in the ocean, which is encouraging the coral to grow and replenish the damaged coral. The island is extremely eco-friendly and this is the perfect way to help with the effect of Global warming. Expect to lose all sense of time, what day it is and what is going on elsewhere in the world. The Maldives is a place for pure relaxation. Or, for those who like to be occupied, there are a whole host of water sports and various excursions. Savour gourmet dining whilst watching the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Appreciate the most amazing hospitality and friendly staff. We have found our paradise. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

PROPERTY MATTERS Chris and Margaret Thorpe - enjoying their new kitchen at home in Elburton

KF Kitchens - going the extra mile to create stunning kitchens

Story and photos by Laura Joint There’s customer service, and then there’s KF Kitchens’ customer service. Just ask their latest happy customers, Chris and Margaret Thorpe, from Elburton. Their new kitchen takes the term ‘customer service’ to a whole new level. The couple wanted a ‘false’ chimney breast to be built to accommodate their existing range, they got it; they asked for tiny cupboards to be inset in the chimney breast as a handy condiment store while cooking, not a problem; they particularly liked the idea of in-frame cupboards and drawers for added character, they got them; they even asked for a bookcase in the same style - and they got that too. And when they mentioned that some of the sizes were likely to be unusual and a bit tricky, guess what? That wasn’t an issue, either. “KF Kitchens gave us precisely the kitchen that we wanted.” said retired Royal Navy engineer Chris. “Some of the units had to be specially made because of the sizing. We wouldn’t have had that if we’d used a national company. They worked with us all the way. And because they’re based just down the road, we could nip in and see them at any time. From start to finish, their customer service was amazing.” Not that it came as a surprise - Chris and Margaret chose KF Kitchens following recommendations from a number of friends: “We spent a lot of time looking at other companies online, but we always knew we’d be visiting KF Kitchens as well, because of what our friends had told us. And they weren’t wrong!” KF Kitchens is an established familyowned company, run by Nathan and Derinda

Damarell and Simon Rice. When Chris and Margaret first popped in to see them at their showroom at Faraday Mill, they already had a rough idea of the design, units, appliances and colours they wanted for their kitchen and utility room. “We had a number of design meetings with Nathan and he drew up a rough costing at the outset, so we knew the ballpark figure we were working with,” said Chris. “There was never any pressure. They were very friendly, and they were willing and able to go the extra mile to meet our requirements. “Nathan advised us not to choose the colours until we’d decided the design of the kitchen. That was good advice. At that stage, we could look at the 3D images which gave us a good idea of how the kitchen would look.” The Thorpes chose a shaker-style inframe Burbidge kitchen in mink and putty, with a mix of cupboards and drawers which provide plenty of easy-access storage. The kitchen is completed by stylish Silestone worktops, Blanco sink and Quooker boiling water tap. The fit also included new Neff appliances - microwave, dishwasher, and extractor hood. “The kitchen we had before was nice, but it was about 20 years old and we felt it was looking a bit tired,” said Chris. “It was a cottage-style kitchen and we wanted something more modern. The new units in the utility means we have a lot more storage space, and the kitchen now leads nicely out to our conservatory extension, which was another of our aims. “The one thing we really wanted to do was to make our range a central feature and we thought that a chimney breast would do that.

PROPERTY MATTERS But we didn’t have a chimney breast! They built one for us - it’s a perfect fit and sets a great feature for the room.” The work took three weeks - and, just like the planning, it went like clockwork: “The fitter was meticulous with the installation, I can’t praise him highly enough,” said Margaret. “He made sure everything was just right. He was always making suggestions, advising us on how we could achieve the best look, and he kept us informed so we knew exactly what was going on. “We couldn’t be happier with the end result.” The entire project was managed by KF Kitchens, including the kitchen fitting, plumbing, plastering, electrics and decorating. So, will Chris and Margaret be recommending them to their friends? “We already have,” said Chris. “We found KF Kitchens through recommendations from friends and now, we’re passing our recommendation on to other friends. The Plymouth Magazine September 2019

A Plymouth woman has set up a service for people with dementia and their families, after losing her gran and grandad to the devastating illness. Katie Robinson, a fully qualified dementia specialist, launched Katie’s Here For You Independent Sitting Service earlier this year to fill a gap in services. And, after family, friends and supporters helped her to buy a car, she is now spending much of her time taking people out on trips to some of their favourite places. Katie, from Beacon Park, is also offering respite for families and carers so they can go out and have some precious ‘me’ time, while Katie cares for their loved ones. One of the services she offers that’s really taking off is her silent disco, which comes complete with flashing headsets, a disco ball, and blow-up microphones and guitars: “Some of them get up and dance, and they all sing along,” said Katie. “They love it. “Music is therapy. It’s the best way to connect with our emotions and feelings, and songs bring back lots of memories. I have a playlist for the silent discos, and I play the music that they request on my trips out in the car. The most popular songs so far are Delilah by Tom Jones and Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond.” Former Estover Community College student Katie, 34, has worked in the care sector since she was 20, initially with vulnerable young people before training as a dementia specialist. She says losing her grandparents had a big impact: “It was very upsetting when grandad developed vascular dementia after having a stroke and then, not long after, gran started to show signs of Alzheimer’s. “I was very close to them. They helped me when I was a child and then, as they grew older, I helped them. We’d go up to the Hoe every Sunday for a walk and an ice-cream. A trip to the Hoe is one of the favourite things that my ladies and gentlemen like to do as well, and I often feel that my grandparents are there with me.

“They were called Elsie and Dave Birnie, which is why I’ve called the car Birnie - I’ve even put the name on the back of the car. The love I have for them made me want to give something back to the community, so I can help others in similar situations.â€? It was also when Katie was working in the home help sector that she saw the need for this type of service: “You’re in and out, just doing the essential things that need doing, and there’s no time for anything else. The funding wasn’t there for respite or trips out. I wanted to fill the gap, but in an affordable way.â€? Katie’s hourly rates are ÂŁ12-ÂŁ14 per person, which includes her petrol costs: “I want to reach as many people as possible. When I was working in home help, I felt really sad for the people who wanted to do this but couldn’t afford it because the costs are usually so high.â€? Katie generally takes people out on their own but for one group of three women in their 70s and 80s, sharing time together has proved a tonic every Monday: “They chat, they sing and they have a good laugh together,â€? said Katie: Katie’s grandparents Dave and “They’ve become great Elsie Dirnie friends. They were the ones who came up with my slogan, Adventure with Dementia. “They particularly enjoy a day out in Looe for fish and chips. They decide what they want to do - and they get to listen to the playlist in the car. I have one gentleman who likes to go to all the National Trust places. It’s really lovely, seeing how a trip out and listening to music can make such a difference for people.â€? Each Friday for the past three-and-a-half years, Katie has also been running the Memory Matters Day Club above Moments CafĂŠ in the city centre on behalf of the Community Interest Company. “It’s a wonderful place and I enjoy running the Friday Club for them,â€? said Katie. “They offer some amazing help and support to people living with dementia.â€? The Day Club is where she first introduced her silent disco which has had such a positive impact that she’s looking to extend it to care homes and health service providers. And she added: “I wish my gran and grandad would have been here to see what I’m doing now. They’d have loved it.â€?

PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Such a ‘sound’ place to buy a home!

You gotta love Plymouth!
That’s the message from property professionals who say increasing investment in the city’s economy and infrastructure makes it an even greater place to realise your property ambitions.
Plymouth Area Property Professionals Association (PAPPA) say it is not just the rich history that makes Britain’s Ocean City great.
It’s also the many contemporary development schemes that are changing the face of Plymouth and giving it an even more vibrant feel. “You only have to look at the current cinema and associated development on the old bus station site at Bretonside to see what an exciting, modern city Plymouth is evolving into,” said Andrew Blacklock of Plymouth estate agents Maitlands.
Other PAPPA members point to the tremendous impact Plymouth University continues to have on the city, attracting students from all over the world.
It had also helped to put the city on the worldwide academic map with its reputation for excellence in marine study and research.
“What has been really exciting in recent years is the trend for alfresco dining, with a whole host of restaurants and

eateries that give the city such a dynamic and cosmopolitan feel,” said fellow PAPPA member Emma Brockman of City Sales estate agents.

“It has had a particular impact on Plymouth’s Barbican where historical meets contemporary to create the most amazing social space, that now attracts tourists from around the globe in even bigger numbers. “ Dan Robinson of Plymouth agents Smeaton Homes, another PAPPA member said: “What I have noticed in particular is just how much Plymouth is becoming more of a cultural hub and the recent arrival of the Messenger statue outside the Theatre Royal really encapsulates that for me.”
Throughout August, across social media, PAPPA’s estate agents and property letting agency members shared the top 12 reasons as to why they love living and working in Plymouth - with the hashtag #gottaloveplymouth
“Like all Plymothians, PAPPA is proud to have its roots in this great city. As an association, we want to shout about what makes it so good and just why you’ve gotta love Plymouth,” said association chairman, Ben Dreher, of Lawson Estate Agents, Plymouth. The Plymouth Magazine September 2019

Solicitor Sasha Walton from The Family Law Company talks about her life in law and her career at the firm When did your interest in law begin?

Sasha Walton

I have always wanted to be a lawyer. Both my parents were lawyers - in employment law and conveyancing – and I took part in mock trials at school. After completing my law degree, I did my training contract in Exeter. I moved away from law briefly to take an MSc in Business and Management, which has helped me understand company structures and the commercial aspects of law firms.

Why did you decide to specialise in family law? Most of my training was in family law, so it seemed the obvious area to concentrate on. I enjoy helping people to resolve their financial matters and bring their marriage to an end in as stress-free a way as possible.

Is there any particular area of family law you focus on? I am in the Divorce and Finance team and here in Plymouth we deal with many military divorces. I am adept at working with clients who drop in and out of communication range and who need things done quickly when they are available. I have a solid understanding of

the pension schemes in the Armed Forces; there are three main schemes all with slightly different rules. In many cases the pension is the biggest asset and the pension holder often wishes to protect it as far as possible.

What brought you to The Family Law Company? I joined the Plymouth team in 2016. I had friends working at The Family Law Company who sang the company’s praises, and the profile was really positive. So, when the opportunity arose, I took it.

What qualities makes you a good choice for clients? I am good at listening and drawing information out of clients. Often clients feel uncomfortable discussing their personal problems and the breakdown of their relationships, so I try to ensure they feel relaxed. I really do care about my clients and have a genuine interest in helping them achieve the right result. I am also pragmatic in suggesting a better way of approaching issues; for example, supporting clients in adopting a problem solving rather than a confrontational approach and helping them remain amicable with their former partner wherever possible. This is particularly important when there are children involved.

What about your career development? In the Divorce and Finance team at The Family Law

Company there is already a wealth of experience in dealing with public sector pensions. It is an area I want to continue to develop as a specialism, working for clients such as doctors and local authority staff. Like military pensions, these can be the client’s biggest asset.

What’s the best part of your work? Undoubtedly it is helping clients to manage a really stressful and emotionally charged situation and guide them towards the best possible outcome as quickly as possible so they can move on with their lives.

What do you particularly like about working at The Family Law Company? It is a forward thinking company and I like all of the Directors. Rachel Buckley and Donna Hart who are based in our Exeter office and Jonathan Madge here in Plymouth are really committed to nurturing staff, including facilitating flexibility for parents of young children. That is particularly helpful for me, as I have a young son.

What do you do to relax? I love spending time with my son of course – I make sure I leave the office on time so I get plenty of home time with him. I also enjoy walking the South West Coast Path - I live in the South Hams so it is really convenient for coastal walks. And I wanted to get back into exercise, so I am training to do a half marathon.
