Valuable work of charitable sector Over the years we have regularly featured the invaluable work of local charities and voluntary organisations and the dedicated people who run them. It’s a fact that these ‘third sector’ (as opposed to public and private) bodies make a massive difference to the communities they serve. In this issue we feature the work of Plymouth-based charity Provide Devon, which provides emergency food for individuals and families in crisis. It’s a grim reflection on our society today that the the number of urgent food parcels they have distributed tripled every month between January and April. And according to the charity’s manager the main reason for the crisis is the growing issue of financial poverty, although people fleeing domestic abuse and complex mental health needs are also an issue. The charity has launched an appeal for donations and a Sponsor-A-Spud campaign to help meet the growing demand on their services. People across the city regularly raise funds for charity by taking part in different challenges and this month we feature Plympton man Neil Brinkworth who is in training to swim the English Channel in July. Neil will raise funds for Brain Tumour Research and St Luke’s Hospice in memory of his best friend Mat Luscombe who passed away in 2017 as a result of a brain tumour. You can read about Neil’s challenge on Page 10 of this issue we wish him well in his efforts! Elsewhere we have a feature on one of the city’s big events - Armed Forces Day. It takes place on June 29 this year and will end with a spectacular display by the Red Arrows. Turn to the centre pages for all the details. Hope you enjoy this edition!

CHARITY MATTERS
Charity launches campaign amidst huge surge in food poverty in city A Plymouth charity that provides emergency food for individuals and families in crisis is dealing with a dramatic increase in the number of people without food across the city - and half of them are children. Provide Devon says the number of people provided with urgent food parcels tripled every month between the end of January and the end of April. During those three months, the charity fed 274 people in need in Plymouth - 138 adults and 136 children. Charity manager, Ayshea Cross, said: “Month-on-month, it’s tripling. And it’s not people who are struggling; it’s more severe than that. It is people with no food. That’s the reality and it is just not okay. “Bear in mind that we only provide emergency food to people once, to keep them going for a few days at the time when they need help the most. That means each family or person we help is new, in addition to those we’ve helped in previous months. And we’re not solving it. What we are doing is buying the families and the support agencies some much needed time while long-term options are investigated and hopefully start to be put Ayshea packing in place.” an emergency Provide Devon differs from other food parcel food provision charities in three ways. It is rapid response and can get food to people in crisis food poverty within just a few hours; the food parcels include fresh produce; and the charity works with trusted referral agents rather than directly with the public. Referrals come from schools, doctors, housing associations, council departments, charities, churches and other community organisations in direct contact with people in poverty. The parcels - six or seven carrier bags of essentials - are delivered to the agencies to give to the recipients discreetly. There is no means testing or need for vouchers; the charity simply asks the referrer for the cause of the crisis, the area of Plymouth, the number of people the parcel is for, and any dietary requirements. “We have a trusting relationship with our referral agents,” explained Ayshea. “If they say there is a need, then there is a need. We know that Parent Support Advisers within primary schools have previously personally supported children at their schools who have skipped meals due to poverty. But there has been such a dramatic increase in Plymouth, that it has become too much for them to deal with. “It used to be the case that there were certain areas of Plymouth where there was a need. But those pockets of areas are everywhere now. We now deliver emergency food to people in crisis in every PL postcode area in the city. “The main reason for the crisis is financial poverty but fleeing domestic abuse and complex mental health needs are also factors. Universal credit is a massive issue. People are

without support for many weeks. What are they going to do for food? If people don’t have wider family support, they have nothing. People losing their job is also a big factor. Suddenly, they find they are in crisis and it might only be a temporary issue, but the need is immediate. “Our food parcels will keep a family going for three to five days but we know that some people make the parcel last for a fortnight,” she added. In response to the need for fresh produce, the charity has launched a Sponsor-A-Spud campaign for the public to support. £1 buys a bag of potatoes; £5 buys fresh and chilled food; £10 buys a full food parcel: “We’ve been listening to what schools and families have been saying and it has become clear that there is a real need for fresh food,” said Ayshea. “It’s important for young children especially, to have something fresh, like milk and an apple as part of their diet.” Provide Devon was launched as a charity at the end of last year. Prior to that, it had been offering a service for four years as the Community Food Share project at Hope Baptist Church. In January, the charity moved to Burrington Industrial Estate so it has more storage space to meet the greater need. Ayshea is helped by almost 30 volunteers, who deliver the parcels to the referring agents. In the short time that Plymouth Magazine visited Provide Devon, Ayshea took two requests for emergency food from referrers - a local school needing food for a family of six, and a city organisation helping an elderly couple fleeing domestic abuse: “People escaping domestic abuse leave with nothing. It’s one of the reasons we are now also providing toiletries, particularly to charity referrers.” Ayshea says another issue surrounds people being housed in temporary accommodation such as a bed and breakfast: “They may only have a kettle. They’ve got nowhere to store fresh food and nothing to cook with. So we now have some foods that can be made up with just a kettle. Clearly, it’s not ideal but it’s better than having no food at all.” As well as Sponsor-A-Spud, Provide Devon is also appealing for cash donations so that fresh food can be bought on the day of need. Ayshea is also increasing connections with local businesses, particularly in the food sector, while long-life food donations can be dropped in by businesses or the public - but call ahead first. “I feel completely driven to do what I’m doing,” said Ayshea. “Once you see the need in the city, you can’t help but try to do something about it. “We are continuing to apply for grant funding but for the moment we’re are relying on local individuals and businesses. We’re looking for the community to support the community.” Provide Devon 07928 670704, e-mail providedevon@ outlook.com, web www.providedevon.org.uk

Hi, I’m Janet Stirling, the voice behind my food blog ‘theeternalcook.com.’ I love hospitality and I love cooking for others, it makes me happy and it makes them happy.
Introducing Janet Stirling’s...
My food blog came about because my American relatives and friends wanted some British recipes to try and my friends and neighbours here wanted American and Mediterranean dishes to try. I was born in the USA and lived there until I was 11 when the US Air Force moved my dad and our family to Madrid. There I spent all my teens and that’s where my love of food began with the exciting and exotic new foods and smells. At 19, I met my English husband, Graham, and moved to the UK where we have lived together for over 50 years. Close by, are our three sons, their lovely wives and my six grandchildren, ages ranging from eight to 20!! Once I had my own family, my love of food became a passion to cook for others. The kitchen became my ‘happy place’ and cooking and baking for them became the creative outlet I needed while, at home, raising my family. It’s been quite an adventure feeding that lot, and I still feed them all regularly. Their dietary expressions include, vegetarian, non-dairy, nut and egg allergies and one grandson who eats only meat and potatoes! I love them all to bits. I remember well how, amid the chaos and everyday life, we don’t always feel inspired. Tiredness and the need to feed the family make mealtimes a challenge, to say the least. The good thing about having a food blog is putting all my best ideas and favourite recipes under one roof, then when I fall into that ditch of ‘what to cook for tea?” (which I still do even today) I can look at it and inspire myself! Life has its difficult times for us all and there is nothing more comforting than a warm kitchen and smelling the promise of a full stomach. Sometimes I invite people to cook with me and some receive hospitality to help them forget their troubles. Volunteering with a couple of local charities, helping in my church and local projects inevitably leads to eating and drinking at our place where lasting relationships are built. I love sharing life from my kitchen and hope I can be a friend so you won’t feel alone in yours and who knows, you might discover that creativity inside you that’s just waiting to be tasted.

Making the most of British lamb! Isn’t June lovely, when thoughts turn to weddings and butterflies where we eat lots of canapés and chicken? Then there are the garden parties, not at Buck Palace, you understand, but in the English village where we traditionally have fundraisers with food in someone’s garden. There we find never-ending egg sandwiches and copious amounts of clotted cream, scones, and lots of cake! I love all this and enjoy a cream tea with the best of them, but I surely come to a time when I hear the great British roast dinner calling me. Now, as you know, May and June are the
14\

months when British Lamb is at its best and as I’ve eaten lamb in many countries I can say, with hand on heart, that British lamb is the best in the world. So when I’ve had my fill of cream teas and cakes and am high on sugar, I turn to an old friend, roast shoulder of lamb. This dish is one that I love and it has a Spanish influence and fond memories. It is just so easy to shove in the oven for several hours and forget it. Roasting is my go-to method of cooking whenever I can, it’s so easy. A shoulder of lamb feeds 4-6 people. If I were cooking this today for my extended family, I would serve it with roast potatoes (pleasing all) and roast butternut squash with garlic and thyme and I would add crumbled goat’s cheese and nuts and seeds for my lovely vegetarian daughter-in-law, making a main for her. I would serve it with kale and possibly peas or broad beans from the garden. They’re at their best now and you can never have too many vegetables, so if you grow your own, get out there picking! I really hope you try these dishes and tell me how you get on. I’ve offered some of my own tips to help you along the way. I’d love to know who you are feeding and what sort of recipes you’d like to see here. Here are some suggestions of common scenarios to get you thinking. What to feed a crowd? Surprise dinner guests? (This would include the essential store cupboard), salads are boring!! Help, there’s a vegetarian amongst us. And for the gardeners: What to do with a glut of courgettes, tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers or pumpkins??? Have a think about it and please feel free to let me know on info@cornerstonevision.com

Popular classics at summer concert Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s summer concert features some of the most popular light classical works of 20th century English and American composers - from Vaughan Williams’ frenetic The Wasps overture to well-known melodies from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The concert takes place on Sunday June 16, 5.30pm at Sterts Theatre, Liskeard and Wednesday June 19, 7.30pm in Plymouth Plymouth Symphony Guildhall for their summer Orchestra at the concert. Plymouth Guildhall The score of The Wasps was originally composed for a production of Aristophanes’ play of the same name in 1909, at Trinity College Cambridge. The orchestra will also be performing Vaughan Williams’ serene and lyrical Fantasia on Greensleeves, a traditional and very wellknown English folk song. Walton’s Façade, which premiered in 1923, was originally written as a setting of Edith Sitwell’s poetry and was a combination of classical parodies, nursery rhymes and jazz influences scored for dance-band. By 1938 Walton had selected a
Eq u
handful of the original 22 movements, removed the poetry, and re-scored them for full orchestra into the two Orchestral Suites that will be played. Moving to America, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, composed in 1945, was originally composed for a ballet, scored for just 13 instruments. In 1945 Copland extracted a concert suite of eight movements for full orchestra, which achieved widespread and enduring popularity. Gershwin’s Orchestral Suite from Porgy and Bess features very familiar melodies such as Summertime and It Ain’t Necessarily So and his rousing Strike Up The Band forms a great finale to this concert of favourites. The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longestestablished orchestras in the country and attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor, Michael Petrov and Savitri Grier amongst the performers to play with the orchestra. Gordon finds an alternative to painkillers
34 Royal Parade, Plymouth PL1 1DU
t: 01752 222660 Gordon Rawlins in his worskshop
www.footsolutionsplymouth.co.uk
Gordon Rawlins has spent most of his working life on his feet, leading to problems that became so painful he had to seek help. Gordon, 73 and from Ernesettle, was a postman for 33 years, following the closure of his once-thriving building business during the recession of the mid-70s. Over 40 years ago, as an ‘afternoon job’, he started and still runs A1 Buycycles, specialising in the repair and sale of refurbished bicycles from his local workshop. In the past he needed surgery for damage to his digestive system, which he says was caused by using painkillers for ongoing issues related to a fractured pelvis. This made him reluctant to use painkillers for his foot pain, but the intensity grew. He went into Foot Solutions’ Royal Parade store after walking past it one day in great pain. “I was desperate,” he said. “I knew I couldn’t keep going much longer. I didn’t want to take painkillers all the time, and thought I had to give this shop a try when I saw its name.” Gordon was seen by Jo, who carried out an extensive, free foot assessment. This showed that the pain in the balls of his feet and his toes, as well as his hip pain, could be helped through using orthotic inserts and a pair of suitable shoes. She recommended an over the counter insert and shoes to withstand the rigours of his working day; and explained how custom made orthotic inserts would help even more. “At first I was reluctant, because it’s not cheap,” said Gordon. “But I have to say it’s been more than worth it. These shoes and inserts make an enormous difference – I could not do what I am doing without them.” That first visit was six months ago. Gordon has returned to an active life: he is repairing bikes in his workshop every day and volunteers as a Scouts Active Support Member, taking young people out on activities. Gordon’s foot health assessment in his own words is simple: ”My feet used to hurt, now they don’t.” For a free appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

Stiltskin Theatre Company has a busy programme of events over the summer months - including a special twist on a Shakespeare classic. As always, their popular shows will take place at The Soapbox Children’s Theatre in Devonport Park. First up is Stiltskin’s presentation of Jack and the Beanstalk which runs from June 8 to 22. Stiltskin love a traditional tale, so they will be creating a veritable feast of magic beans, overgrown beanstalks, golden hens and talking harps, not to mention a bad-tempered giant and a very nimble Jack in the version of .Jack and the Beanstalk. Then as part of Stiltskin’s ‘discover Shakespeare’ programme they launch a special adaptation of A MidSummer Night’s Dream for children and young people. Join Chop and Block, two foolish story-tellers, who find themselves in the fairy forest and re-tell the comic story of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. These productions are in addition to the regular workshops for children and young people at the Soapbox Children’s Theatre. These include Imaginators on Wednesdays between 4pm and 4.45pm, a drama group for four to six year olds. Children play games to build confidence and learn to work as a team. On Tuesdays betwen 4pm and 5.15pm there’s Wild Things 1, a drama group for six and seven year olds, followed by Wild Things 2 from 5.20pm to 7.20pm, a drama class for intermediate performers. Children learn through drama games to build on their skills then work with the director to devise and improvise stories to perform in front of family and friends.

WHAT’S ON
A legendary portrait of Sir Francis Drake, which belongs to the National Portrait Gallery, can now be seen at Buckland Abbey. A rare opportunity to see this wonderful Elizabethan portrait exhibited outside of London and in the sea farer’s former home in Devon. The painting has travelled to Buckland Abbey as part of the National Portrait Gallery’s COMING HOME project, which will see the Gallery lend 50 portraits of iconic individuals to places across the UK with which they are most closely associated; this portrait will be on display at Buckland Abbey until September 22. The portrait was painted c.1581 and will be hanging in the local sea farer’s former home near Tavistock for five months so that local residents can see the Elizabethan portrait for the first time on their doorstep. In an exhibition titled ‘Coming Home – Sir Francis Drake at Buckland’ this Elizabethan painting will be on display in the Nave gallery at the Abbey. Alison Cooper the National Trust’s curator said: “The painting was created shortly after Drake came home from his circumnavigation of the globe. In 1581 following his return, his

By sharing our personal preferences, thumbprints and 3D face scans, how easily can we be tracked and influenced and who is watching on the other side of the tele screen? In ‘The Unknown Knowns’, Plymouth based curator Vickie Fear brings together artists using appropriated material to expose hidden truths and ask questions about the world we live in, making connections between artists who draw from a range of sources, including public archives and popular culture. Contained in these works are conversations about privacy, media influence, propaganda, colonialism and truth. Are we living in science fiction? What are we really scared of? And if the known unknowns are the things we know that we don’t know, what don’t we know that we know? life entirely changed. His voyage made him famous as well as fabulously wealthy. He was knighted by Elizabeth I, and was able to purchase Buckland Abbey – a country home that befitted his new found status. “He then became Mayor of Plymouth and an MP. He was even granted his own Coat of Arms with a motto that reminded him of his yeomanry birth – sic parvis magna – from small beginnings, great things. He had ‘made it’. “This display centring on Drake’s portrait aims to explore how Drake presented himself and his new found status, and, as part of this, the importance of his new home at Buckland Abbey. It’s a wonderful opportunity for Buckland to be able to borrow this portrait and put it on public display outside of London. The fact that we are able to bring it back to Drake’s former home where it may have been during Drake’s lifetime, makes this even more exciting.” Carol Murrin, general manager of Buckland Abbey said: “The portrait that’s being loaned from the National Portrait Gallery perfectly sums up a critical point success point in Drake’s life that is bound up with his purchase of Buckland.”
artists are able to draw attention to the instability and heterogeneity of archives. This exhibition is made up of a series of moving image works created through seeking and responding to instructive footage in collections within institutions. The work takes a playful approach to watching bodies ‘perform’ and then uses re-enactment strategies to interpret and physically explore new ways of understanding the archive. Within this, Paige’s ongoing interests in personal betterment, instruction-led activity, humour and his lived experiences are played out. May 4 - 19 HOST GALLERIES 1ST YEAR CELEBRATION EXHIBITION Host Galleries, Whimple Street Meet the artists in person, this is a first for any gallery. During the show, there will be four of the gallery’s top selling artists going in for the day celebrations. All four artists will be in the gallery performing a ‘live studio’ where they will be working on new paintings during the day. WHAT’S ON
Meet the artists behind the funkiest fes Dancers moving gracefully to music, using their wheelchairs to help express their artistry; an MC diagnosed with a language disorder and autistic tendencies, who works wonders on the mic; and a choir of people, some of them with little or no hearing. Meet some of the Funky Llama Festival entertainers who don’t believe in the word ‘can’t’. The inclusive festival, run by Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP), returns to Plymouth Hoe on Saturday June 8 and, for the first time, is part of Plymouth MTV Music Week. The festival showcases disabled and non-disabled artists from all genres including rock bands, rappers, DJs, cabaret, dance, and drama groups. Among the local artists are Olivia Frost from Far Flung Dance Theatre; event MC and metal music act, Mikey ‘Spike’ Brooks; and a new Plymouth-based signing choir, Hands in Harmony. Olivia, 23, has a unique perspective. She performed for TRP’s Young Company as a non-disabled artist before developing a condition which means she now uses a wheelchair and requires 24-hour care: “I danced from a young age and performed in shows and competitions,” said Olivia. “Ballet, tap, modern, jazz, dancing has always been my thing.” But when she was 18, Olivia developed functional neurological disorder (FND), a little understood illness believed to be caused by problems in the nervous system: “I couldn’t speak when I first got it. I’ve got my speech back now, but there are some days where I feel so tired, I can’t do anything.” Olivia returned to dancing two years ago, when she joined Far Flung, which is supported by TRP: “When it was first suggested to me, I said ‘no’. I was scared, I had no confidence. But I told myself I had to do it, because I’d become very isolated after getting ill. I didn’t know anything other than breakfast, lunch and dinner and looking at four walls. “One of my fears was that returning would bring back memories of how things were before. But it didn’t. Instead, I have learnt to do things differently. I’ve learnt to use my chair as part of my body, and I’ve learnt how to use the space.” Far Flung and Funky Llama have created a new routine for the dancers to perform at the festival. For Olivia, who is one of the three chairs of the Funky Llama Steering Group which drives the festival, it’s another step towards her ambition of forging a career in the arts: “Having a voice and keeping active are very important. It’s good for me mentally, too, because I haven’t accepted things yet. That’s why it’s great to be around these guys at Funky Llama. They’re very

supportive. They’ve got your back.” Mikey is a perfect example of this: “When I see Olivia, I don’t see the chair – I see her. And I see her dancing. I’ve always lived with my condition, so I’ve never had to adjust, like Olivia has. We’re all different. But we’re all here to perform, and to get knowledge and experience. Sure, we have this condition or disability, but it doesn’t define us. We’re still having a good time.” Mikey has been with Funky Llama since TRP launched the project in 2010. As resident MC, he has become the ‘face’ of the annual festival: “For me, Funky Llama is everything. It keeps me going. It gets me thinking there is something good I can do. When I’m at the festival, everything feels right.” As well as MC-ing, Mikey will also be performing his metal versions of well-known songs. Like Olivia, keeping busy is important. He is currently looking for musicians to help start a new band, Llama Hhama, and he’s also writing a fantasy story: “I want to do everything! I feel I have so much creativity and I just want to get it out there.” One of the acts Mikey will be introducing on the day is Hands in Harmony, thought to be the only communitybased signed choir this side of Bristol. Supported by Plymouth Deaf Association, it was launched earlier this year to combat isolation and create inclusion opportunities that bring deaf and hearing people together. Some members are profoundly deaf, some have moderate hearing losses and some are hearing but are improving their signing to help them communicate with choir members, family or friends who have hearing loss. One of the people behind the choir, Bev George, became

stival in Plymouth! deaf in her early 30s following progressive hearing loss. She said: “There’s been a lot in the media about the benefits for everyone of being in a choir and I thought ‘why can’t we enjoy these benefits, too?’ “We are not a singing choir, we are a signing choir. The choir represents words, emotion and meaning with their hands, body and facial expressions, using sign language in place of singing. Signing to music is very challenging for those with profound deafness. They will take their cues from the leader, and they might feel sound vibrations from the floor.” Hands in Harmony will be holding a workshop in one of the marquees so that festival-goers can join in: “The participation song we have in mind is You’ve Got A Friend. The theme of the festival is breaking down barriers, of inclusivity, so it fits well. “Funky Llama is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a festival,” she added, “and for us to show that deaf people can. We are challenging the perception that deaf people can’t enjoy music.” The Funky Llama performances, workshops and activities take place on the main stage and in marquees around the festival ‘village’. It’s an accessible event with specialist facilities, and everyone is welcome. The festival runs from midday to 10.30pm. Tickets are £10 for the day; £5 for under-18s and for admission after 6pm. Enablers go free when accompanying an adult ticket holder. Tickets can be bought at the gate on the day, or in advance via the Theatre Royal Plymouth box office on 01752 267222.

Our favourite rose for climbing Whilst pink climbing roses are perhaps the most popular colour, and commonly seen growing on a trellis of an old English cottage, we are particularly excited by ‘Starlight Symphony’ which has been named Rose of the Year 2019 - Starlight Symphony

king so rosey in June! the Rose of the Year 2019. With its deep glossy foliage, pure Sweet Dream white clusters of blooms opening to reveal pink stamens that bees love, we think this would look exceptionally beautiful grown on a trellis on the wall of a house. We envision a sea of lavender grown beneath like a purple blanket, a modern update to a traditional plant. And why lavender? Read on to find out! Rose care pruning is probably the part of rose growing that most people feel daunted by. It’s fairly easy to do: the rule of thumb is there should be a spring prune and an autumn prune. Choose a frost free period and prune out weedy, damaged, dead or diseased growth. In the autumn, roses can be trimmed back after they finish flowering in November to stop wind-rock and root damage. As for the pruning itself, use a pair of clean, sharp secateurs and always cut the stem above an outward face bud. Make the cut at a 45 degree and sloping away from the centre of the plant. This will ensure that any rain water will run off the stem onto the ground instead of the crown of the plant A liquid fertiliser can also be applied fortnightly. This will increase the vigour of the plants and in turn result in an abundance of flowers. Mulching is a good practise; garden compost, or well-rotted manure will keep the moisture in the ground, help feed the rose and keep weeds down. Pests, disease and companion planting There are a number of products available for pests and diseases, but we also like to encourage natural processes. In warm weather don’t let your roses dry out, give them a good soaking into the soil. In warm weather they are prone to aphids if they dry out. Companion planting with lavender is a great way to protect your roses from pests, and in turn diseases. Plant the lavender nearby as it encourages Gertrude Jekyll ladybirds that eat aphids. T he scent of lavender repels the detrimental insects, as well as attracting the beneficial pollinators and providing a food source to bees. So enjoy the garden and if roses aren’t your thing there are so many fantastically colourful plants available to choose from this June. Blooms are out in full and just inviting you to get in the borders and plant your hanging baskets and pots! Also don’t forget to see our advert and special reader discount voucher to use on a rose. TRAVEL MATTERS
From Budapest to Benidorm - it’s all in a day’s work for this travel agent!
Budapest......and Benidorm
A few weeks ago, around the date of our ‘supposed’ Brexit, I attended two travel conferences over consecutive weekends. My first was in the beautiful city of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The following weekend was in the well-known Spanish resort of Benidorm – very contrasting locations, but both popular with British tourists. Budapest is cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, ranked as ‘the world’s secondbest city’ by ‘Conde Nast’ and ‘Europe’s seventh most idyllic place to live’ by Forbes. You can fly direct to Budapest from Bristol Airport, which makes a short break more appealing to travellers from the West Country. Our conference was based in the Intercontinental Hotel, right on the banks of the Danube, although the first night we stayed on an Amma Waterways river cruise ship. The highlight was when the ship departed on a ‘Budapest by night’ pleasure cruise. This was a By Travel great way to experience how beautiful Budapest is, and to compare a river cruise to an ocean cruise. Unfortunately, as this was a working trip, our daytime activities were conferencing and networking, so my experience of Budapest initially was at night. We were very fortunate that the next evening the Hungarian Tourist Office booked trams for us to travel across the city to experience dinner at their indoor market. The market place was opened in the evening, just for the delegates, and bench style tables were set out through the middle of the market. Between each course of our meal we were able to do some shopping at the fabulous sausage, cheese, and their intricate local lace and clothing stalls. A Hungarian band played, and the wine was free flowing, which afforded our group a great insight into the Hungarian
culture. Budapest is world famous for its night life. More specifically their ‘Ruin Bars’ that have been springing up throughout the Jewish quarter over the past 15 years. Originally, old dilapidated buildings would be taken over and made into quirky bars. The idea caught on with more and more bars opening, sometimes for only a short period before the building was demolished. I was lucky enough to visit one of these bars and I can see why they’re thriving. It was packed full of youngsters proud to be part of this unique culture. Luckily, on the final day we had the afternoon free to walk around the city to see sights such as the Hungarian Parliament Building, Saint Stephen’s Basilica and Heroes Square - all in their own way fabulous feats of architecture. Whilst walking along the Danube I found the most moving tribute called ‘Shoes on the Danube’. This is a memorial to the Budapest Jews who were shot by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen during World War II. The victims were lined up and shot Expert at the edge of the water, so that their bodies then fell into the Danube River and were carried away. They had to take their shoes off, since shoes were valuable belongings at the time. The memorial was conceived by film director Can Togay and sculpted by Gyula Pauer, in 2005. It contains 60 pairs of iron shoes, forming a row along the Danube. Each pair of shoes was modelled after an original 1940s pair. Our final night was dinner in the amazing Opera House of Budapest. This really was an excellent way to end a very short stay in such a beautiful city. Whether you travel to Budapest for a short break, or just stop for the day as your cruise ship sails the Danube, you will never forget your visit to such an amazing place. They always say life in the travel industry is never dull, and can be contrasting. Well, four days later I was flying from

TRAVEL MATTERS Exeter to Alicante for my next travel conference in Benidorm. I have been to Benidorm more times than I can remember: my first holiday abroad was to Benidorm back in the early 70s with my parents. I can still remember staying in the one-star hotel ‘The Pueblo’, being taken on the Spanish barbecue nights and bringing home those large donkeys, and of course a set of castanets. We had a three-night stay in a four-star hotel on Levante beach, giving us easy access to all that Benidorm has to offer. This was my first visit for many years, and it hasn’t really changed. What makes Benidorm so popular is its easy access from most airports in the UK, it’s year-round weather and what I like most is its fabulous beach. The beach is dredged on a daily basis making it one of the cleanest in the Mediterranean. What I don’t like about it are its mishmash of high-rise hotels and apartments set behind the beach. It is a horrible sight and really spoils what should have been a premium beach resort. Due mostly to greed, buildings were allowed to be built in any shape, or size, giving no continuity or quality. What saves Benidorm for me is it’s Old Town. Situated between the Levante and Poniente beaches, this area still has the Spanish feel. Narrow streets, markets and tapas restaurants seem miles away from the large bars and nightclubs in the tourist centre. Part of our conference was to take a day trip out of Benidorm and visit the beautiful town of Guadalest. The 11th century San José Castle dominates the town and is one of the top historical sites in this part of Spain. The second part of the tour was to visit the ‘Enrique Mendoza Vineyard’. This was undoubtedly my favourite part of the day! I have visited many vineyards around the world, including Canada, USA, France, UK and Spain, and I can honestly say this was the best tour I’ve ever experienced. The history of the Vineyard, and the tour of their production area, was informative, but not boring, and the wine tasting session was superb. We tried eight different wines, accompanied by eight different courses of tapas, all
complimenting each Shoes on the Danube...a other perfectly. When moving memorial to we finished our wine Jews who were executed tasting we were then introduced to Enrique Mendoza himself, the end to a perfect tour. The rest of our time was spent in conference or in the sun on the sea front which was badly needed. After two weekends of very contrasting destinations I can now reflect on both. Although Budapest had so much more to offer than Benidorm in culture and history, it’s still nice to go to a typical British Mediterranean holiday resort. Benidorm brought back lots of fond memories of my childhood holidays. Finally, our manager Andrea James will be climbing Kilimanjaro to celebrate her 50th Birthday (sure she won’t mind me saying!) with her friend Theresa. She has funded the whole trip herself, but is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, where every penny raised will go to the charity. I’m sure most of you who have been to our office will know Andrea and appreciate the task ahead of her. If you would like to support Andrea, then please go to www. justgiving.com/fundraising/andrea-james8 and make her ‘Special Birthday’ even more so by helping her to raise money for a very worthy cause. Thank you and good luck Andrea!

PROPERTY MATTERS
KF Kitchens serve up fabulous family When Mark and Sarah Youde were considering a new kitchen for their home, they visited several local and national companies, and one firm stood out above the rest – Plymouthbased KF Kitchens. And, right from the initial consultation and design stage, all the way to the finishing touches being added, the couple are glad they chose the Faraday Mill firm: “The work was meticulous,” said Sarah. “They really care, it’s as though it’s their own kitchen. “And it’s more than a kitchen. It has become the room that we use more than anywhere else in the house.” KF Kitchens is an established familyowned company, run by Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice. They were recommended to Mark and Sarah by a friend who recently had a kitchen installed by KF Kitchens: “We went and had a look and we really liked it,” said Mark. “But we did our due diligence by seeing what other companies had to offer, too. We knew what we wanted for our kitchen and it was clear that KF Kitchens were the best for us.” The couple moved into their house in Kelly Bray in 2013 and a new kitchen was always on their ‘to do’ list. Mark explained: “The house was built it 2006 and still had the original kitchen. It was dated, dark and badly designed. The hob was against the wall at the other end from the dining area, which meant that whoever was cooking had their backs to everyone and was miles away. “And there was a dividing area where the walls took up so much room that there was only space for one person to be in the kitchen! So that had to go. We worked with Nathan on the design and he agreed with our ideas. It meant some structural work, knocking down that bit of wall to open the whole area up. It has created a space that flows from the kitchen, to the dining area and to the conservatory and utility. It has also brought a lot more light into the kitchen. “The other big change that Nathan suggested was moving the sink to the far end, where the hob used to be. We were going to keep it under the window, but by moving it, it has created one long worktop space – something we never had before.”

The Plymouth Magazine June 2019
When it came to choosing their kitchen, it was as though it was meant to be: “We saw the kitchen we wanted as soon as we walked into the showroom,” said Sarah. “It was right there in front of us. The only difference was the colour, because it was pink and we wanted purple, which we’ve got.” KF Kitchens managed the entire project, including the design, structural work, plastering, decorating, electrics, kitchen and worktop fitting, and flooring. The flooring also takes in the conservatory, to add to the ‘flow’, while new kitchen cupboards have added extra storage space in the utility. “All the work was coordinated really well,” said Sarah. “Every single worker was professional and did their work to the best of their ability. They wanted everything to be just right. When the fitters came to do the splash-backs at the end, they said they’d never seen anything so perfect – everything was completely level and straight!” But it’s not just about looks – it’s about practicality, too: “The storage space is intuitive, everything is where you’d expect it to be,” said Sarah. “The hob has been moved to the dining room end, so it’s like a servery area and it’s much more sociable. The workmen also set the low-level storage units further back under the servery, so there is more room as you move from the kitchen to dining area, and it can also be used as a breakfast bar. “And everything is dead easy to clean, which is important in a busy kitchen. It’s designed with use in mind - and it does get a lot of use.” The kitchen was a special treat for the family, following a health scare last year when Mark donated a kidney to Sarah when she suffered kidney failure: “It made us look at things differently and we thought ‘we want a kitchen, so let’s do it’,” said Mark. “We’re so glad we did because we love it,” added Sarah. “We’ve now got a lovely social space that works well for us as a family with three youngsters aged 17, 16 and 12. And whoever’s cooking is now facing into the room, they’re not cut off!” Having had KF Kitchens recommended to them, Mark and

Sarah are now passing the message on: “My sister is having a new bedroom fitted by them now,” said Sarah. “And after our experience, we would definitely recommend them to anyone thinking of having a new kitchen.”

BUSINESS MATTERS
Husband and wife team with a winning formula for business success
Running a business as a husband and wife team is a challenge; running two is something most people would not even contemplate. Yet that is exactly what Andrew and Karen Scowcroft of Foot Solutions and City Centre Chiropody are doing with great success, at 34 Royal Parade. As well as two highly regarded foot health care businesses, they also have two sons of secondary school age. So how do they manage it? “We like to help people change their lives for the better,” said Andrew. “Foot health affects most of us at some point during our lives, and every day we see people finding answers to painful conditions. It really is a privilege to be in this position and it’s extremely motivating to us and the team.” They didn’t always run their own businesses. Karen, who has a BSc in Podiatry and Podiatric Medicine, previously worked in the NHS and Andrew worked in sales to all areas of healthcare in the private sector. That was until they took up an opportunity to run a domiciliary care organisation in Manchester in 2006. Despite tough times, which saw Karen providing cover for care shifts as well as running the business alongside Andrew, the couple turned the organisation around and were pleased to hand it back to its original owners a few years later in much better condition than when they started. During this time, they holidayed in the Southwest and began to look for a home here. “We wanted a better work-life balance with our two young boys,” said Karen, “where the skies are bigger, in a less competitive and less materialistic Andrew and Karen Scowcroft environment.”
42\
The Plymouth Magazine June 2019
They settled in Wembury, which meant Andrew had to commute across country and it was in a magazine advert whilst waiting for a train that Andrew saw the Foot Solutions franchise for sale. It was, says Andrew, an ‘ahhhh moment’ and prompted a call home to Karen to say: “I’ve found our next business!” Foot Solutions opened in 2009 and gave them an opportunity to live and work locally, providing health and retail services from a city centre store. Customers were pleased with their footwear and arch supports, but one question kept cropping up: ‘Do you do treatments?’ Both Andrew and Karen saw the need to provide a more complete service, so in 2011 Karen opened City Centre Chiropody upstairs from the shop. HCPC registered podiatrists could now provide customers and clients with clinical treatments, in addition to the specialist footwear recommended by the pedorthists from Foot Solutions. “In my three years of podiatry and podiatric medicine training, I think we had three hours training on shoes,” said Karen. “It’s fantastic to be able to refer patients downstairs if we think they can help them further.” “And vice-versa,” added Andrew. Foot health care seems to be heading the same way as dentistry and ophthalmics, with treatments previously available on the NHS no longer on offer, or only to a minority of people. Judging by the comments of customers and clients, many featured in this magazine, and awards for customer care, the two businesses at 34 Royal Parade seem to be going a long way to providing a service from which many of us can benefit.

Ocean among the top-rated mortgage providers in the UK It has been a fantastic start to the year for Plymouth-based Ocean Mortgages and Equity Release who have celebrated the success of a series of seminars over the past 12 months. The aim of the seminars was to help the over 55s learn more about their later life borrowing, financial, taxation and healthcare options. Ocean worked with local businesses, including Bright Solicitors and PKF Francis Clarke to present many options to a wide range of Plymouth people over the age of 55. Sami Bickford, office manager explained: “The next series of seminars start again on June 6 at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel from 2pm to 4pm. This event is exclusively for local businesses to discover all about later life borrowing and property options, including legal aspects and taxation. “Tickets for these events can be found via Eventbrite. Future events will be for members of the general public. Anyone who is interested in booking one of these free events are invited to contact us via email or phone.” In addition to a series of successful seminars, Ocean have recently been voted one of the best mortgage providers in the UK for their exceptional service. Stuart Powell, managing director of Ocean Mortgages was named on the list of top-rated mortgage advisers in the UK published in The Times newspaper in March 2019. Stuart said: “We were particularly proud of this achievement as only 320 mortgage brokers in the UK were featured on the list. This represents less than 4% of the total number of brokers nationwide.

The Plymouth Magazine June 2019
“It is particularly pleasing as the list is based on client reviews received in the last 12 months. We received 44 reviews, 43 of which gave us full marks for the three categories of advice, service and value.” Stuart added: “We would like to thank our clients for giving their feedback and their exceptional reviews. It is fantastic that the service we are offering to mortgage and equity release clients is at a high standard, and with the steady progression of the business in 2019 this is set to advance further with customer focus at the core of our work.”One such example was client Mrs P from Tavistock who was paying 6.99% on her Lifetime Mortgage. Ocean were able to complete a remortgage to a lower rate and save her more than £136,000 over the next 15 years.* When asked what he attributes Ocean’s success to, Stuart explained: “We definitely do things differently at Ocean. We are building a business that helps educate people about better ways of financing their borrowing. “This includes attending one of our seminars to learn about their available options including remortgaging or releasing equity from their property. It can be a cliché, but we truly put the client at the heart of all we do and work with the best local solicitors and estate agents to achieve this.’ Ocean, was founded in 2017 by Stuart who has over 17 years experience helping people with their borrowing needs. Ocean has grown steadily to include office manager Sami Bickford, who has been in the property industry for over four years and Jaye Powell, as director. Both are currently studying for their Cemap Mortgage exams to give mortgage advice in the future.
The newest member of the team is Frankie, the office dog. Only eight months old, miniature daschund Frankie has proven to be a very popular addition with everyone who visits the office in the Shore building on Athenaeum Street, close to The Hoe.
