Plymouth all set for a sparkling Christmas... Plymouth is a great place at Christmas - and this year promises to be a sparkling occasion as always.
The festive fun begins on November 14 with the Christmas Lights switch on, followed by the opening of the popular Christmas Market which will be open every day from November 28 to December 19. Penguins will be hiding in the city centre with the return of the LEGO brick trail from November 30 to January 5, while Polar Bear explorers can take part in the Polar Bear Trail which takes place from December 1 to March 1 on the Waterfront - from the Barbican to the Royal William Yard. Then there’s the Santa Fun Run on December 8 when hundreds of people of all ages will take part in the colourful charity event organised once again by Saltram Rotary Club. Not to forget the fantastic Illuminate light festival taking place at the Royal William Yard and other locations from November 28 to December 1. Details of all these events - and more - can be found in our special Christmas Guide in the centre of this edition of the Plymouth Magazine. The pull-out guide is the perfect publication for families who want to make the most of Christmas in Plymouth. Elsewhere in this issue we have the usual selection of features about local businesses and local people - including an interview with Nicola Callis who runs a brilliant enterprise called PetStay which provides carers for dogs while their owners are away from home. Hope you enjoy the latest issue and have a blessed time with your loved ones this Christmas.

It’s been a great year for Kidslingo Hub - in anyone Plymouth businesswoman Becky MacLean has double cause for celebration, after opening new premises and winning a top award in the space of just a few weeks. In September, Becky moved her Kidslingo children’s language school into a purpose-built unit at Christian Mill Business Park in Crownhill, providing a permanent home for her classes with all the facilities under one roof. Then, in October, she was voted The Most Loved Activity Leader in The South West, West of England and Wales at the What’s On 4 Kids Awards: “For parents and their children to vote for me as the Most Loved Activity Leader is really lovely,” said Becky. “The title means everything - it shows the love I put into my classes and reflects the fact that we have so much fun, everyone’s always smiling.” The award follows the national recognition Becky received in May from the children’s activities app, ClubHub, which presented her with the Biggest Growth in the UK Award. And in 2018, she was voted the Most Outstanding Activity Leader for Children Aged 5-12 in the whole of the UK at the What’s On 4 Kids Awards. Former languages schoolteacher Becky launched the business at the start of 2016. The French and Spanish multisensory lessons are for children aged from just a few weeks old to 11 years old and are in classes for five age groups: 0-9 months, 10-24 months, pre-school (2-4 years), Key Stage 1 (47) and Key Stage 2 (8-11). At first, Becky used a variety of community venues around the city to hold the classes, alongside the extra-curricular lessons she delivers to local nursery and primary schools. Eventually, in September 2018, she acquired premises in Crownhill - but quickly outgrew it. The new Kidslingo Hub at Christian Mill offers a big space for the classes, accessible toilets, a kitchen, and plenty of free Children enjoying a Kidslingo session

parking outside: “Our new premises are absolutely perfect - and we are right next to Jump Plymouth, so it’s a fabulous location. It’s also multi-use, so other businesses can use it for activities such as yoga, dance and children’s parties. “When we got the unit, all the walls were white,” she added, “so it was all hands to the pump to decorate it and make it bright and colourful. We’ve manged to turn it into a nice, friendly space where the children can come and enjoy.” Becky has between 300-350 children attending her half-hour classes each week, with a maximum of 15 children per class. So, why are all these families so keen for their children to learn languages? Becky says there are two main reasons: “Often, a member of the family might be from France or Spain, or they have family and friends who live there. People also like to be able to speak the language if they have holidays in those countries. “The other big reason is simply that they see the value of their children learning languages at an early age, because it is a skill that gives them a real advantage.” But these are nothing like usual school lessons. For a start, parents take an active part with their children in the classes, which are taken as a group, sitting on the colourful floorspace. And the learning uses songs, stories, messy play, and visual stimulation as well as Makaton signing: “My classes embed a lot of singing and signing, with the added bonus of learning a language at the same time,” said Becky. “Because the parents join in, it means they can keep it going at home. The older children, in Key Stages 1 and 2, start to do more written work so they’ve got a head start by the time they move on to secondary school. Some of them are significantly further ahead for their age group and I’d love to see some of them go on to take their language GCSEs early.” Parents can book a free taster class and Becky is also happy to chat to local nurseries and primaries who might be interested: “I was a teacher for eight years at Ivybridge Community College, so I know how much pressure teachers and schools are under. In many cases, it’s just not possible for them to offer these sorts of lessons.” Becky runs the classes herself but gets a helping hand with promotional

material from her graphic designer husband Innes and their daughters, Jessica, 9, and Molly, 7. She’s looking forward to celebrating the fourth anniversary of the business in the New Year - and to another fabulous 12 months: “Did I envisage it would grow quite this fast? No, not at all! And the time has absolutely flown by. Some of the children have been coming to my classes since they were five weeks old and they’ll be going to school next September, but they’re in it for the long haul and they’ll be moving up through the classes, with me, as well as at school. “Another really nice thing is the friendships that have been made at the classes, not just among the children, but among the parents as well,” she added. For more information about the classes, prices and times, visit Becky’s Kidslingo Facebook page or give her a call to book a free taster session.

The Apron - a fresh new dinin Contemporary dining with a traditional twist, quality fresh local produce, and a head chef with a passion for provenance - welcome to The Apron Restaurant in the city centre. The Apron, on the first floor of Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP), is open to everyone from midday to 11pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as well as to theatregoers across the week for pre-show dining. It launched its ‘open to all’ service earlier this year in Head Chef Davin Browning response to public demand. And, with its views over Royal Parade - including the Messenger statue - the restaurant really is making its mark as a city centre eatery for those wanting an elegant dining experience at a reasonable price. For Head Chef Davin Browning, the rebranding of the restaurant was the chance to devise a menu that makes the very most of the seasonal ingredients produced here in Devon and Cornwall. Davin joined the restaurant in 2017 and has been Head Chef since February 2018. The Apron realises his vision of how eating out should be - and that means using produce that he can trace back to the farm or fishing boat. “I’m very lucky to be working with a company that supports my vision,” said Davin, who describes his food as ‘nostalgic and creative’. That way of working includes using slow cooking for many of the dishes and introducing Fine food beautifully presented traditional butchery skills in the kitchen so the team can prepare the meat precisely for each dish. On the menu, the creative nostalgia is reflected in two of the biggest sellers - fish & chips and pie of the day. But these are no ordinary fish & chips and pie of the day. The sustainable fish is done in Davin’s own batter recipe using Jail Ale and custard yes, custard, which makes the batter crisp. The meat in the pie, meanwhile, is from named farms in Devon - and all the chicken is free-range. Other big favourites are chicken supreme with fondant potato, charred leek & sweetcorn and Madeira sauce; Dawlish mushroom risotto with tarragon, poached egg and lemon oil; and braised feather blade of beef with horseradish mash, shallot, greens and braising juice. Having spent 18 years overseas ‘on and off,’ life-long chef Davin also combines spices and herbs with the local

ingredients to create dishes with an international flavour, such as Devonshire free-range Creedy Carver duck with hoi sin ketchup, and a Japanese-inspired specialist mushroom dish. All the dishes are presented with Davin’s trademark flair: “I’m very big on presentation. You eat with your eyes, and I love colour on a plate,” he said. “This is the type of food that really makes me happy. And the way we do things makes me happy, as well.” Davin visits the local farms and fishing boats that supply the restaurant, to discuss the produce he wants for the dishes: “We’re working as close as we possibly can with our local suppliers to source the best possible produce for the food we are creating,” said Davin. “We’ve taken things up a notch or two, in terms of the amount of care that is taken from the very start of the process, to the food that is presented on your plate.” Ingredients such as beef, free-range duck and chicken, fruit and veg, organic speciality mushrooms, rapeseed oil and sea salt are all from Devon and Cornwall. And there’s local sustainable fish, too: “All of the fish in our daily specials are landed in either Plymouth or Brixham,” said Davin. “And the fish we select on the day depends on what’s landed and what’s the best quality.” Davin has teamed up with a local fishing boat to launch Ocean to Plate, so diners know the journey of the fish they’re eating. He’s even going out on the boat to see the journey himself, from the moment the fish is caught, to where it’s landed, bought at market, and delivered to the restaurant. And it’s not just the food that focuses on local produce - the drinks menu, too, features regional breweries, cider producers, gins and soft drinks. “I think when you combine the quality of the food, the class and style of the restaurant, and the customer service - which our diners often comment on - then we’re bringing something that’s really fresh and elegant to the eating out scene in Plymouth,” said Davin. Main dishes on the a la carte menu start from £14, with vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free choices.

Janet Stirling’s...
Sunshine Kitchen Christmas is upon us and the excitement builds of seeing loved ones from near and far. The Christmas tree is decorated and all the halls are decked. Our heads are buzzing with plans for Christmas entertainment, parties to go to and of course our own Christmas menu all swimming round together in our brains. I can’t be without that neverending feeling that I’ve forgotten to buy someone a present, of course and then, OH NO! I’VE NOT MADE THE CHRISTMAS CAKE! Nightmare?? Have you ever found yourself in this situation? I used to make a Christmas cake every year for more than 25 years and one Christmas; the cake lasted until the middle of January. No one seemed
14\
The Plymouth Magazine December 2019
to be eating it as in previous years. Eventually, I realised that my eldest son, who had moved away from home by then, was the one who loved the Christmas cake. I soon stopped making the traditional cake in October and feeding it brandy until Christmas Day. What a relief that was too. Then one day I came across a recipe for a chocolate Christmas cake and to my delight this cake could be made and eaten straight away, so I made it. Everyone, including the children, liked it. Needless to say this is the cake I now make at Christmas, sometimes at the last minute, and we all love it. I am delighted to share the recipe with you here so you can treat your family without the big hassle of the traditional cake. It has all the flavours of Christmas plus chocolate. Who wouldn’t like that? Here’s the recipe for the Chocolate Christmas cake: √√ Soft dried prunes 12oz/350g √√ Raisins 9oz/250g √√ Currants 4oz/125g √√ Margarine/vegetable 6oz/175g (you can use butter if you can eat dairy) √√ Soft muscovado sugar 6oz/175g (I use the dark one) √√ Honey 6oz/175g √√ Coffee liqueur 4oz/125g (I use Tia Maria but any will do) √√ Oranges x 2 juice and zest (you can use lemons if you prefer) √√ Mixed spice 1 teaspoon (that’s the Christmas ingredient) √√ Cocoa x 2 tablespoons (I use Bourneville dark chocolate cocoa) √√ Eggs x 3 √√ Plain flour 5 ¼ oz./150g √√ Ground almonds 2 ½ oz./75g (replace with flour if you don’t eat nuts)
√√ Baking powder ½ teaspoon √√ Baking soda ½ teaspoon

Here’s what you do: • Heat your oven to 150C/130C fan • Line sides and bottom of an 8” x 3 ½ “/20 x 9cm deep round tin (I like the loose bottom cake tin) with baking paper. Paper on the sides should be a little taller than the tin to protect the cake catching on the edges. • Place the fruit, fat, sugar, honey, liqueur, orange juice and zest, mixed spice and cocoa into a large saucepan. • Heat to a gentle boil stirring until the fat melts. • Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes. • Remove from the heat and let stand for about 30 minutes. This process can be quicker if you stand the pan in cold water but don’t get any in the mixture. • After 30 minutes when it has cooled some, add the eggs, flour, ground almonds, baking powder and baking soda. • Mix with a wooden spoon until well combined. • Pour cake mix into the prepped tin and put it in the oven to bake for 1 ¾ - 2 hours, until the top of the cake is firm. • Put the cake in the tin onto the cooling rack. • Once it’s cool remove it from the tin and decorate. I don’t marzipan or ice this cake, usually, as we have family who can’t eat nuts but the traditional marzipan and fondant or royal icing would be wonderfully Christmassy. Note this cake has a rich strong chocolate and Christmas fruity flavour so doesn’t need much else. Sometimes I decorate it with gold stars and some gold edible glitter. You could use any decorations you like. Marzipan fruits would be appropriate but so would fondant snowmen and Christmas trees. Be creative and have some fun. My photo is one of some individual cakes I’ve made for our local Christmas Fayre. Quick and easy decorations with shop bought fondant icing. I love celebrating Christmas with my family and I pray you get to celebrate with yours this year.

KF Kitchens’ latest creation is another barnstormer!
Before From a derelict 18th century farm building, to a stunning barn conversion in the heart of the South Devon countryside - and, taking pride of place in Nick and Kathy Cassidy’s dream home near Ermington is their beautiful kitchen, designed and installed by Plymouth family firm, KF Kitchens. The kitchen comprises half of the huge open plan living area upstairs, where only the finishing touches to the conversion are now needed - including balconies at each end of the room. It’s hard to imagine, looking at it now, that this used to be a piggery! “We think it dates back to the middle of the 1700s,” said Nick, “and when we started doing the building work, we found evidence that people lived in the barn with their animals, so it seems it was their home as well as a piggery.” The couple bought the building and 12 acres of land a couple of years ago, immediately recognising its potential, while the fields were also perfect for their two horses: “We lived five or six fields away and we’d been riding our horses by these fields for 14 years,” said Kathy. “But it was only when our son Ryan saw the ‘For Sale’ sign that we even realised there was a barn here. When we saw it, we thought ‘wow’ - and luckily, we managed to buy it.” But, added Nick: “It was literally four walls and a roof that was half tin and half slate! It was completely derelict, and we had to bring water and power in, as well. Our builders, Elm Building Services, were
absolutely amazing.” After all the hard work to make the building habitable, Nick and Kathy were determined to create something amazing. A big part of that vision was to have a beautiful kitchen as the showpiece of the upstairs space. But finding a firm that matched their own creativity and drive was proving a challenge: “I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something different,” said Kathy. “But everywhere we went, there was a lack of vision. They weren’t coming up with anything I couldn’t conceive myself.” Until, that is, they visited award-winning firm KF Kitchens at Faraday Mill, run by Plymouth couple Nathan and Derinda Damarell and co-director, Simon Rice. “We’d heard good things about KF Kitchens from a friend of mine, and we obviously did a lot of our own research,” said Kathy, “but we were quite far down the line when we
was so refreshing,” added Kathy. “Nathan was very transparent. He asked us: ‘What are your necessities? What would you like but which aren’t necessities?’ And he went through the designs, with the prices of everything up front. “They were very genuine, and they didn’t try and sell us any add-ons. They just want everything to go smoothly, they want you to be happy with the results, so they only recommend brands that they trust.” Kathy and Nick chose the Langton ‘in-frame’ solid wood design by Burbidge Kitchens. With such a big space, they decided to have two islands in cashmere paint, while the cupboards are in charcoal paint. All the main appliances are in-built, including a full-size fridge and full-size upright freezer by Neff and a Neff dishwasher that emits a small LED light onto the floor to display the status of cycle. Nick and Kathy also treated themselves to a 48-bottle wine chiller in one of the islands. There are two Neff cookers - one a ‘slide & hide’ oven and the other a combination microwave oven with a warming drawer. The island worktops are Quartz Rapture 20mm, fitted by Mayflower Stone. One of the islands has a NEFF induction hob, with the extractor built in. The other island has the undermount sink, with a Quooker boiling water tap. Each island has a pop-up power socket tower. With so much storage in the cupboards and drawers, it means everything can be put away neatly, giving the room After the feeling of light and space Nick and Kathy were looking for. The kitchen took eight days to fit: “It was a went in to see them at their showroom. We really nice experience,” said Nick. “They all showed them the layout of the room and work together like a family, very professional. said: ‘What would you do with this space?’ And Gary, the fitter, was a perfectionist. The kitchen they came up with was a Mark 1 “It was installed in the summer and we model of what we wanted. are chuffed to bits with it,” he added. “It “Nathan looked at the window at the end has everything we wanted, and it doesn’t of the room and said ‘that’s your feature, have anything we didn’t want. The Plymouth Magazine December 2019
Up first on Thursday November 28 is legendary comedian Griff Rhys Jones with his ‘All Over the Place’ full-length standup show. Following sell out performances of his previous one man entertainments ‘Jones and Smith’ and ‘Where Was I? and a hugely acclaimed tour of Australia and New Zealand, it’s time to join one half of Smith & Jones, one quarter of Not the Nine O’Clock News and one third of Three Men In a Boat as he presents an evening of hilarious true stories, riffs, observations and details of his recent medical procedures. It’s all guaranteed to be packed with wicked insights into the pains of celebrity, the vicissitudes of parenthood and encounters with the great, the good and even the royal. Former politician Michael Portillo is next up at the Red House with his show on December 9 entitled Life: A Game of Two Halves. It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future Prime Minister. Although his political career then came to a humiliating end, losing his seat in May 1997, Michael has since reinvented and endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for the solid workmanship found in the great railways of the world, the effect of the railways on the history of countries and the daily lives of their people. Listen to his story, told with a ‘parliamentary standup’ wit, and then feel free to question him about it.

Plymouth NEW! for 2020 PLYMOUTH 1620
Plymouth-born William Thomas Jinkin died in 1936 and left an estate worth millions in today’s terms, most of which he left in trust. That trust was tasked with creating accommodation for local ladies of a certain age and disposition, chiefly widows, spinsters and genteel women who faced difficult circumstances. The accommodation was to be free or cost neutral and the ladies were to live in these homes without having to worry unduly about their perhaps limited means.

This book introduces us to WT Jinkin, who, in the late nineteenth century developed the business established by his father, Alderman Thomas Jinkin, into one of the most successful in the city. Between them the Jinkins played a significant role in late-Victorian Plymouth; in its development, its sanitation, its street surfacing and its railway connections.

GARDENING MATTERS We have a large range of planted arrangements at the Garden Centre – from wicker novelties in a range of different animal shapes, to potted up Christmas containers and baskets, as well as statement pots for the front door. They are all planted with hardy plants in festive colours that will last long after Christmas has passed., making perfect gifts for green fingered friends and family. All our arrangements are planted in store by ourselves, so if you can’t find the pot and plant combinations you like, then we will happily plant a pot and plants of your choosing. As well as outdoor garden gifts, we also have a great range of indoor plants and arrangements. A great bulb for indoor growing is Amaryllis. Pot up one of the gift sets and it will be in bloom approximately six weeks after planting. They have spectacular showy, lily like flowers on stalks with three to four blooms per stalk. Amaryllis like to grow in a gritty compost in bright light. For best results, plant them in a terracotta pot, with John Innes No.3 compost mixed with grit. Water well while in growth, but leave it to dry out after it has finished flowering and leaves begin to yellow. Amaryllis grow to a height of 45-60cm (18-24ins ) with a spread of 30cm (12ins). They are available in red, white, pink, cream, burgundy and stripped varieties. The plant that epitomises Christmas more than anything else is the Poinsettia. They will be ablaze with colour all the way through December, and not just in the traditional festive red, they are now available in a wide selection of colours such as white, cream, pink, orange, burgundy, marbled, and red with cream blotches. To keep your Poinsettia looking at its best, place it in a room with bright, but not direct sunlight. Make sure that the temperature does not drop below 13-15C. Plant it in a mix of John Innes No.3 compost mixed with grit. They will grow to a height of 60cm (2ft) with a spread of 30cm (1ft). Water it sparingly and only water when the surface of the compost feels dry to the touch. We also have a great range of Orchids in stock which make beautiful and exquisite gifts. The large exotic flowers are stunning and surprisingly easy to care for. They have quite a vast colour range, so there is one to suit any taste and style. Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid) is by far the most common and easiest to look after. They need to be watered once every 7-10 days and feed once a month. Flowers can last for months, and after a flower stalk has died, quite often it can be pruned to the nearest knuckle where it will re-bloom. These like to be in a warm room in bright, but not direct sunlight. Size ranges from 20-60cm (8-24ins) in height with a spread of 15-30cm (6-12ins). Dendrobium Orchids are slightly fussier in their requirements, but still very easy. Very much like Phalaenopsis, they like to be watered every 7-10 days when in active growth and flower and fed every four weeks. However when they have finished flowering and stopped growing, they

need to go through a dry period. This is when they only need to watered once a month for a period of 3-4 months. Dendrobiums can take higher levels of light than most Orchids, so will cope well if positioned in full sun. They need air temperatures when in flower and growth and cooler temperatures when dormant. So when it is in its dry phase, move it somewhere cool. They are many different varieties and these vary in height from 30-90cm (12-36ins) and 30cm (12ins) in spread. Cymbidium Orchids probably have the most spectacular flowers of the orchids. Their care is also surprisingly simple. They are winter flowering, so perfect for bringing colour into the home at Christmas. Water them weekly or fortnightly in winter depending on how often they dry out. They need cool temperatures in winter, so keep them somewhere bright and away from central heating. In summer, they need cooler night time temperatures to encourage flowering, so place them outside in the garden or patio, when temperatures stay above 10C. Water them more often in summer, but don’t keep them water logged. Bring them back indoors in October, where they should start to send out flower spikes. Feed them monthly to keep them healthy. Cymbidiums can

We have a wide range of colours and designs. It will add that finishing touch to your orchid or houseplant. Create a warm and welcoming entrance to your home this Christmas with a Christmas wreath in pride of place on your front door and by pairing it with a pair of Bay lollipops (Laurel nobilis) or Holly lollipops (Ilex). These look glamourous and stylish when planted in glazed pots, particularly a festive red, but you can match the pot to your colour schemes. For a really festive look, decorate with battery operated fit and forget outdoor Christmas lights and tie a bow around the stem to match the colour of the pots. If you want to really go for the wow factor, under plant the base of them with red cyclamen or primroses. These will flower right throughout Christmas and continue to flower well into the spring. For a prolonged display, you can under plant with spring flowering bulbs, that will come through and extend the colour just as the cyclamen and primroses are fading. These are tough, hardy plants that will stand up to the elements over Christmas and can be used for the rest of the year as permanent focal points. Plant the Bays in John Innes No.2 compost and mix in a slow release fertiliser, and for Holly, use John Innes No.3 and a slow release fertiliser. Ideally place them in a sunny position if you can. As an added bonus, when you clip it to keep it in shape, you can use the bay leaves in the kitchen for cooking! If you make your own Christmas wreath, why not plant a few shrubs in a corner of the garden that you can grow to cut your own foliage. Shrubs like Holly, Eucalyptus and Pittosporums are all great for cutting and using in wreath making. Conifers and Fir trees often take up a lot of space, so if you can provide the space for them, then you can grow your own for cutting, plus when they get large enough, they will produce pinecones that you can also use for decorating. We have baby Christmas trees in store that will be the perfect starter plant for this. Fresh flowers and succulents are often used in wreath making and hardy flowers like Cyclamen and Hellebores with look great in a wreath. TRAVEL MATTERS
The Bullet train with Mount Fuji in the background
Unforgettable visit to Japan There is no question that Japan is the most talked about country in 2019. Our TV screens have been filled with documentaries, holiday shows and, of course, the Rugby World Cup. Japan is also hosting the Olympics and Paralympics next year really highlighting a destination rarely visited from the UK. It didn’t take me long to decide whether to go to Japan for the ABTA Travel Conference recently! I was hosted by Gold Medal Travel, part of the DNTA Travel Group which includes Emirates By Travel Airlines. We left Heathrow with ANA Airlines (All Nippon Airlines) on an 11-hour flight direct to Tokyo. The aircraft was a new Boeing 777-300ER. The economy section had very good leg room, which I was grateful for being well over six feet tall. It’s really surprising how different the legroom can be with different airlines and aircraft. If you are reasonably tall I would always pre-book an aisle seat, and if you’re happy to pay then opt for an ‘extra legroom’ seat. Arriving late afternoon at our hotel, there was no time to waste as we ventured out to Shinagawa Train Station, one of the busiest in Japan. What struck me immediately was the sheer volume of people entering and exiting the station. I have been to many busy cities in the world, and always thought the London rush hour was busy, but this was on a different level. What was also noticeable was how quiet and calm the commuters were. There was no pushing, no shouting, and everyone moving at a similar pace. We were travelling to Shibuya Station famous for being next to the Shibuya Pedestrian Crossing, (pictured right) famed as the world’s busiest pedestrian intersection, with people crossing from all directions. Again, I was amazed to see that no one, and I mean no one, would start crossing the road until the green man appeared. When of course it was safe to cross it was like a swarm of bees all moving in different directions to get to the other side of the road. Here’s a great tip if you ever come
here - there is a Starbucks situated overlooking the crossing. Buy a coffee, go upstairs, and you will have the best view of this man-made phenomenon! The following day I was taken to the Tokyo Skytree, which is a new television broadcasting tower built in 2011. It’s recognised by the Guinness World Records as the tallest tower in the world, standing 634 metres high. This gave fantastic panoramic views of the whole city which was amazing. I was very surprised how ‘box like’ the majority of their buildings were, totally different to what I had imagined. This demonstrates Expert just how new and developing this city is. We then went onto the Ueno Park and the Ueno Shrine. Park life is very important to the Japanese culture. There are many large areas where young and old meet up, exercise and meditate. At this stage I feel it’s right to talk to you about their cuisine. If anybody knows me, I am quite a fussy eater and not the biggest fan of seafood. I always like to try different foods, but being honest on certain local dishes offered, I struggled to find something I liked. I am always happy with chicken, beef or pork, but as an alternative to seafood I was normally offered tofu which I find tasteless. In restaurants where I was offered meats, I was happy. So, if you’re on a tour, please make sure the guide knows your dietary requirements in advance. The next few days were taken up by the ABTA conference, featuring debates and presentations, to all the heads of our industry, on where travel will be heading in the next 10 years. The major talking point was, of course, the demise of Thomas Cook. This was discussed at great length, with the overall opinion of it being a business with great staff, but poor management, and too many outstanding debts to survive. On one of the evenings, to give us a break from the daytime events, we were taken to the Gonpachi Restaurant, famous for one of the fight scenes in the film ‘Kill Bill’. There was a great atmosphere, and the food was geared more to western tastes, due to its popularity with tourists. When the conference was over it was time to tick off one

Top Tips for a Stress - Free Christmas New Family Department at Roper James Teresa Cussen
When couples separate, they can often find it very difficult to continue to parent their children jointly with their former partner. This is particularly so around holiday periods, especially Christmas time when families can feel extra pressure to spend time with relatives.
It can be a great help to plan arrangements well in advance. Having a discussion beforehand gives both sides the opportunity to set out their plans. When it comes to sorting out arrangements for children, the first consideration should always be the child’s welfare. For this reason, arrangements need to be child focused. In all the upheaval of a relationship break up, it is vital to take time to remember what it’s like to be a child who is totally dependent on the adults in their life. Whether it is through bereavement or separation, losing a parent at a young age has a far -reaching psychological impact. Children need to know that they are loved by both parents and that they can continue to have contact with each of them and both sides of their family, provided of course that it is safe. In its Parenting Charter (resolution.org.uk/the-parentingcharter) Resolution First for Family Law, an organisation for family lawyers who commit to taking a non-confrontational approach, sets out a number of points which parents are encouraged to agree acknowledging their child’s rights. These include: • that they should be at the centre of any decisions made about them but not the decision maker; • they should be able to talk about how they feel and have those feelings acknowledged and affirmed; and to have a childhood free from the pressures of adult concerns. • It may seem to be stating the obvious but their relationship with their parent is not the same as that between their parents
and they cannot be expected to understand adult relationships. Where a couple were married, they share parental responsibility for their children. This term describes all the rights and duties which a parent has for a child. If they were not married, then the mother has parental responsibility. The father can acquire it either by jointly registering the birth or by making a formal agreement with the mother. If they cannot agree then the father can apply to the Court. Where the parents share parental responsibility, they should jointly discuss any plans for the children. In practical terms, there are some parenting decisions which parents must consult and discuss with each other. For the Christmas holidays, it is always going to be best for plans to be agreed well in advance if there is no set pattern. If a trip abroad is planned, then you may need written consent from the other parent particularly if the surname on your passport is different from that of the children. It would also help to agree when and how the children can contact the other parent whilst they are away, particularly if they are very young. There is however, no need to agree what they will spend their time doing when they are with you provided of course that it’s not risky! Children are able to injure themselves very easily. If emergency medical treatment is required, whilst there is no requirement to consult, it will clearly always be best to let the other parent know as soon as possible. Either parent with parental responsibility can give consent to emergency medical treatment. For routine or ongoing medical treatment, or vaccinations, they should consult each other. Parents should consult and agree if possible, about allowing children to watch age restricted films, games, or tv. The restrictions are there to protect children from unsuitable content and it is every parent’s primary duty to protect their child from harm. Watching unsuitable material at a young age may have a significant impact psychologically. Teresa Cussen at Roper James has many years’ experience advising parents about arrangements for children and is a member of Resolution. PetStay offering a home from home for your dogs while you’re away Wouldn’t it be great to go on holiday, knowing that your pet pooch is back home, enjoying a holiday of their own in 5-star accommodation? With PetStay Cornwall & Plymouth, you can do just that! The business, launched in the area earlier this year by dog lover and Springer Spaniel owner Nicola Callis, ensures your dog enjoys all the creature comforts they’re used to. Nicola connects dog owners with ‘carers,’ who look after the dog while their owners are away - all Story by the owner has to do is remember to pack all their dog’s favourite things! “It’s a home from home experience for the dogs,” said Nicola. “We start by taking lots of details about each guest dog, then match it to the most suitable carer. A ‘meet and greet’ is then arranged for both owner and dog to visit their carer. This is a great opportunity for the dog to have a good sniff around, and for the owner and carer to discuss things like dietary and exercise requirements. And, if everyone is Petstay happy, a completed booking form and Pickles makes deposit will secure the booking. himself at “Meet and greets are a lovely way home at to calm any nerves,” added Nicola. carer’s house “We understand owners can be a little anxious until they’ve met the carer and seen where their dog will be staying as a guest. Recently, I received an email from a very happy owner following a meet and greet - they explained that the carer used to teach their son at college before she retired so they knew her already!” All PetStay carers and their homes are assessed for suitability before they are approved. The key requirements are that they must be a genuine dog lover with experience of looking after a dog; have a very secure garden; be at home during the day; and always keep the owner’s dog on a lead during “walkies”.

Some carers have a friendly dog of their own, which can be lovely company for a sociable guest dog. Where this is the case, the guest dog will meet the carer’s dog at the meet and greet and have time to get to know each other. “However, no other dog is taken in by the carer at the same time - we don’t mix dogs from other households,” explained Nicola. Security and privacy are also paramount - photos are only used with permission in publicity material afterwards, and surnames are never used. The dogs’ usual routines are maintained as Laura Joint much as possible and the walks are tailored according to what they’re used to. The owner provides the dog’s food, toys and bed, and must show proof that their pet’s vaccinations are up to date. Nicola said: “I always send a reminder to the owners shortly before their dogs head off on holiday, to make sure they’ve packed everything their dog will need. “A lot of our carers aren’t able to have a dog full-time but like to be able to care for someone else’s on a short-term basis,” she added. “And some might just have had a dog pass away. They aren’t yet ready to take on another pet but still enjoy spending time with a dog.” Although she only set up the business in January, Nicola has already built up a ‘bank’ of carers across Plymouth and Cornwall and is now looking for more to meet the demand. And she said: “In Plymouth, we can generally connect dogs with carers within 15 minutes of their own homes - but geography isn’t the main criteria; the carer that is the most suitable for the dog is the main criteria. For example, some people prefer to look after a smaller dog; other people prefer a bigger, livelier dog.” Already, long-term connections are being made, with owners asking for the same carers to look after their dogs:
BUSINESS MATTERS
“It’s lovely to see the dogs looking so happy when they’re re-united with their carer. It really is like a holiday for them. And recently I had an email from one of my carers to say they’re keeping in touch with the dog they looked after, and its owners. Isn’t that lovely?” Examples on Nicola’s website include Pickles, who was a guest with Jan and Les and their own dog, Prima. Pickles’ owner, Susan, says: “We did ‘trial runs’ beforehand and then Pickles went to stay for a week. Jan kindly sent us photos of Pickles chillaxing on the garden furniture and when we returned to collect him it was clear to us that he had been a very happy relaxed boy.” Nicola says knowing their pet is happy and cared for is the priority for owners: “Some people book accommodation for their dogs before they book their holidays, so they’ll book their breaks around their pets. If you’re looking to go away next year, then you need to be looking at your dog’s accommodation at the same time. And the sooner, the better, because our carers are already starting to get booked up for the busy periods next summer.” Prices for dog owners start from £23 a day. PetStay is a national organisation with 45 branches around the country, and all carers are licensed and insured through PetStay’s own policies. Get in touch with Nicola if you’re looking for a ‘holiday home’ for your dog, whether it’s a short or a long break - or if you’re interested in becoming a dog carer.

Dream Bathrooms launch their new showroom at Sugar Mill Business Park Former Dockyard engineering apprentice Steven Short is living the dream - literally! Ten years ago he launched his own bathroom and boiler installation enterprise and has never looked back. Now, a decade on, his Dream Bathrooms business is not only well-established, but also has a brand-new showroom where potential customers can view bathroom and shower installations. The new showroom opened a few weeks ago at Sugar Mill Business Park in Plymstock and Steven is delighted with the facility. Products from leading suppliers such as Ropher Rhodes, Eastbrook and Aquadart are on display in the showroom, but customers can also browse through a big selection of brochures in choosing the bathroom of their dreams. “I’m really pleased with the new showroom. I have been looking for the right premises for a couple of years,” said Steven, “and when this unit became available I decided the time was right to take the next step with Dream Bathrooms.” The showroom, at Unit 12 Sugar Mill Business Park, provides the space for customers to see products and installations up close and to discuss their bathroom requirements in relaxed surroundings. This latest development comes at a time when there is growing demand from customers for baths to be replaced by showers. “People are living longer these days and for some getting in and out of the bath can be difficult. As a result we have seen a big increase in customers wanting easy-access or walk in showers,” he said. “We have seen a lot of national companies coming into the market as a result, but they are often charging exorbitant prices for a relatively straightforward installation,” said Steven. “We know of one lady who was charged a five figure sum for a simple shower installation - which we could have undertaken for less than half that figure. “It’s one of the reasons we opened the showroom so that potential customers could see the quality of our work and the competitive pricing that we offer.” But with Dream Bathrooms it’s not all about price - a

reputation for customer service and reliability is a big part of the company’s success. “Most of our work comes from personal recommendation and repeat business from existing customers,” said Steven. “Customer loyalty goes both ways. If you are loyal to your customers, they are more likely to be loyal to you.” The new showroom is open every day of the week except Wednesday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. Steven’s partner Beth Howe, who has many years experience in retail and customer-facing roles, is on hand to show customers the products available and take details of their requirements - all over a cup of coffee and with no high pressure selling. Steven arranges all the design aspects of bathroom installations and then project manages the work with his team

The Blind Co. - offering fitting and quality that’s blindingly good! Mark Haseldine has been fitting blinds and shutters all his working life, ever since leaving school and embarking on a carpentry course. When the opportunity came up to join a blind company, he jumped at the chance: “A blind company came in and asked if there was anyone who wanted to manufacture blinds. I went for the job and got it - and that was over 30 years ago!” Today, Mark runs his own business, The Blind Co, fitting made-to-measure shutters and blinds of all types for domestic and commercial customers in Plymouth and Cornwall. Mark initially launched the business in 1999 and opened a showroom in Wadebridge in 2004. After 12 years of successful trading, leading to a great deal of repeat business and customer recommendations, Mark made the decision

to close the showroom and continue trading from his home office. It means that Mark effectively brings the ‘showroom’ to you, in the form of his van which is full of samples and books. His other ‘shop window’ is The Blind Co. website: “It has been a really good decision for me and for my customers because it has cut overhead costs which can be translated into competitive pricing,” said Mark. “It also means I have been able to cover a much wider geographical area.” Customers include well-known restaurants in Cornwall, as well as hotels, schools, local councils, shops, offices and homeowners. Mark offers a free-of-charge measurement visit and a no obligation quotation and will also offer guidance and advice: “Shutters are very popular at the moment,” he said. “They’re very stylish and versatile and work in both traditional and contemporary interiors. “Because the blades are adjustable, they are good for varying the light that comes in. They also provide good visual security. Roman blinds and wooden Venetian blinds are also as popular as ever. And we offer designs for all budgets.” The shutters come in a choice of painted, stained or solid wood, while inspiring colours, textures and patterns are available with the blinds. “Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong decision,” said Mark. “Customers need to choose the window treatment that is best for those particular windows, is within their budget and creates the style they’re looking for.” Much of Mark’s work comes from repeat business and recommendations because of the quality, expertise and professionalism: “You want your blinds and shutters to last, so they have to be fitted perfectly; the quality of the fitting should match the quality of the product. “And with the way that I work, everything is done for the customer’s convenience - they don’t even have to leave the comfort of their home.” The www.blindco. info website has several testimonials from named customers, including: “We are delighted with Mark’s work and the whole committee join me in thanking you for your work on our behalf,” and: “The quality of the product and the expert installation has more than exceeded our expectations.” Mark said: “It’s not just that they’re getting fitting of the highest standard, people also appreciate the personal touch and commitment to customer care that you get with a local business. “And they are dealing with the person who is actually doing the measuring and the fitting.”
Mark Haseldine of The The Blind Co with his trusty companion Monty
Mark is usually joined by his trusty companion, Monty the Working Cocker Spaniel. Monty is featured in many of the social media photos and Mark said: “He’s becoming a bit of a star. He’s a real character, he keeps me company in the van.” The Blind Co. is currently offering 15% off shutters ordered before Christmas. You can find out more about the range of blinds and shutters and see photo galleries of Mark’s work on the website. Or give him a call to book a free appointment at your home.

PLYMOUTH MATTERS
Historian Chris Robinson’s latest book traces Plymouth back to the Bronze Age There is a new book out that rewrites the early history of the area and gives an insight into an era of Plymouth history that no-one has really tackled as effectively before. Entitled Plymouth: Bronze Age to Today, the real clue into its story is in the subtitle, How Dartmoor Tin put Britain’s Ocean City on the Map. This lavishly illustrated book is the latest in a long series of local history offerings from popular Plymouth historian Chris Robinson. Chris has been writing about the area for 40 years and says that this is his most significant contribution to date. Tracing the local tin industry back over 3000 years, the author argues that without tin from Dartmoor, and parts of Cornwall, the Bronze Age (which was dependent on copper and tin) would have played out quite differently. Back then the only known source of tin was from the South West of England and the international trade enjoyed by this part of the world gave rise to the notion of Plymouth Sound being miscast as the Cassiterides – literally the Tin Islands – with Mount Batten being the major trading port – Ictis. This back story, supported
EXMINSTER CARPETS
by many finds over many years, gave rise to Geoffrey of Monmouth in the twelfth century creating an early fake news story about how Britain got it kings and queens and how Plymouth was a venue for a Battle of the Giants. Dartmoor hut circles, prehistoric finds at Sherford, Roman discoveries on the banks of the Tamar, and recent tin ingot dating in the Middle East all help to provide a compelling argument as to why Plymouth first earned the claim to be Britain’s Ocean City several thousand years ago! But the story doesn’t end there, it goes on to discuss the early importance of Plympton, its later eclipse by Plymouth and the various attempts over the last 200 years to exploit the mineral deposits that surround this modern day city ... including that at Hemerdon. All in all a fascinating review, at times in a little too much detail, but better too much than too little! Plymouth from the Bronze Age to Today, to be published on November 28, is available from Waterstones, WH Smith and Chris Robinson’s shop at 34 New Street in the Barbican and his Christmas Market Stall in Armada Way.
