Further expansion at Roper James New Family Department Teresa Cussen
Roper James are delighted to announce that they have added Family Law to their expanding business. Heading up the new department will be Teresa Cussen, a specialist family solicitor with over 30 years’ experience and strong local connections.
It is often at the most difficult times in life when family law services are required and so using a trustworthy, experienced and understanding solicitor is vital. In her career Teresa has helped people with all aspects of relationship breakdown, including divorce or separation, arrangements for children, civil partnerships and financial settlements. She is accredited as a Family Specialist by the Law Society and is a member of Resolution First for Family Law, an organisation for family lawyers committed to a nonconfrontational approach. Teresa is committed to enabling people to move forward by providing clear advice, reassurance and practical solutions, whilst seeking to minimise distress. Having spent many years carrying out legal aid work, and more recently high net worth cases Teresa is able to deal with a wide range of different circumstances.
beginning her legal career with Norman Sitters and Son in Lockyer Street. Since then, Teresa has worked for various law firms along the South Coast, including as Head of Department for 12 years with a firm based on Mutley Plain and more recently for a firm based in the South Hams with a wide ranging national and international client base. Although both the centre of Plymouth and the way in which law firms operate have changed dramatically over the years, returning to work in the area feels like coming home for Teresa and she is excited by the new challenge of building a family department at Roper James. Director Tim Roper said “We want to develop the services that we offer and are delighted to have someone with Teresa’s background on board to provide our clients with sound legal advice at what can be a distressing time. By adding family law to our successful wills and conveyancing departments alongside our established medical negligence and personal injury practice we are able to offer our clients a comprehensive service.” Call Teresa now on 01752 546448 or email teresacussen@ roperjames.co.uk to book your free no obligation consultation. www.roperjames.co.uk

Plymouth named in top destinations to visit in 2020 We all know that Plymouth is a great place to live - and to visit. And now the respected Conde Nast Traveller magazine has highlighted just how much the city has to offer. It has published its top 10 holiday destinations in the world for 2020 - and Plymouth is listed at number three! The article by award-winning travel journalist Lizzie Pook is introduced with the words ‘We’ve carefully selected the 10 destinations to watch in 2020, from Panama to Plymouth, Sicily to Senegal, Kyoto to Kyrgyzstan. This is how Plymouth was described in her article (and with thanks to Conde Nast Traveller) “The waterfront city of Plymouth has long sailed under the radar. But it’s starting to shrug off its (unwarranted) rough-around-the-edges rep. “The arrival of restaurants from high-profile chefs such as Mitch Tonks and Marco Pierre White, as well as a multimillion-pound waterfront regeneration project, mean this once-tired seaside city is beginning to look ship-shape again.” She highlights the fact that 2020 marks a landmark year for Plymouth with the year-long Mayflower 400 celebrations. She penned: “More than 30 million US citizens – including several US presidents, reams of writers and poets and celebrities including Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe and Hugh Hefner – can trace their roots back to one of the 102 passengers and 30 crew who made the epic journey.” With hundreds of Mayflower events planned for 2020 including the opening of The Box - she concludes: “Plymouth’s ancient quays are getting their buzz back.” We couldn’t agree more and we will be bringing you all the Mayflower 400 news in the coming year. Enjoy the latest edition!

WOMEN AT WORK
Two Plymouth mums w handled redundancy w Plymouth mums Felicity Baxter and Annabel Treble worked together in the marketing department of a local business for more than a decade - until they received the shock news earlier this year that they were being made redundant. Redundancy is usually a massive set back - but for Felicity and Annabel it proved just the catalyst they needed to achieve their dream of establishing an image consultancy called Styled. The idea for Styled was created when they found that there was a gap in the market for women living in Plymouth to get affordable, personalised style advice. “We’ve both had many conversations, whether with mums at the school gates, colleagues, or our own mothers, about how easy it is to lose your style identity. So many women we spoke to felt unsure on what suited them or even where to shop - they were in a style rut. We both love fashion and clothes and loved giving advice, but we wanted to do more.

Earlier this year Felicity, who is 41, and 42-year-old Annabel decided to take the plunge and travel to London and train with Europe’s leading image consultancy. They planned to build the Styled business alongside their jobs in marketing. Unfortunately, in June this year, they received the news that they had been made redundant after 15 years’ service. Styled was launched in July this year and the busy mums haven’t stopped since. “We want the ladies of Plymouth to know that personal stylists aren’t just for celebrities! We are happy to select clothes from Prada but also more than happy to select clothes from Primark - we work to all budgets. We are here to advise and share our knowledge and techniques, so when a client does go shopping, they shop smarter,” said Felicity. The pair offer style consultations where clients learn how to select clothes in the style and fabrics that will suit their body shape, scale and proportions as well as understanding their ‘dominant colour’ – so they can choose items in the colours that will be most flattering. Annabel said: “We provide a 90 minute face-to-face consultation which enables us to provide a personalised ‘style report’ with a link to a Pinterest board that will contain 20 items hand-picked by us for the client. “We want our clients to see this as a lovely treat - just like a massage or facial - but which will also help them to feel more confident about what they wear and to avoid spending money on clothes they don’t wear!” Annabel lives in Hartley and Felicity in Plymstock and they

can provide style consultations at their homes or at the client’s home. Their clients include women who may have been on a diet and have dropped two or three dress sizes - as well as others who may have gained weight because of medication or poor diet. “We cater for all ages, but find most of our clients are over 30, including many in their 50s and 60s who have lost their style identity over the years,” said Annabel. “It’s not about encouraging people to spend lots of money on new clothes...we want to help them make better use of the clothes they already have in their wardrobe and to advise them on making the right choices when they go shopping.” To achieve this they also provide a ‘wardrobe edit’ service helping clients to organise their clothes including what works best for their colour personality and body shape. The pair also offer style parties for up to six women as well as personal shopping trips when they spend a morning or afternoon shopping with their client, helping them to select outfits and accessories. Felicity said: “Since our launch, we have received some fabulous feedback from clients telling us they have got their style confidence back. We are thrilled to be working with the women of Plymouth on a one-to-one basis and also launching future style events around the city.”

From a derelict 18th century farm building, to a stunning barn conversion in the heart of the South Devon countryside - and, taking pride of place in Nick and Kathy Cassidy’s dream home near Ermington is their beautiful kitchen, designed and installed by Plymouth family firm, KF Kitchens. The kitchen comprises half of the huge open plan living area upstairs, where only the finishing touches to the conversion are now needed - including balconies at each end of the room. It’s hard to imagine, looking at it now, that this used to be a piggery! “We think it dates back to the middle of the 1700s,” said Nick, “and when we started doing the building work, we found evidence that people lived in the barn with their animals, so it seems it was their home as well as a piggery.” The couple bought the building and 12 acres of land a couple of years ago, immediately recognising its potential, while the fields were also perfect for their two horses: “We lived five or six fields away and we’d been riding our horses by these fields for 14 years,” said Kathy. “But it was only when our son Ryan saw the ‘For Sale’ sign that we even realised there was a barn here. When we saw it, we thought ‘wow’ - and luckily, we managed to buy it.” But, added Nick: “It was literally four walls and a roof that was half tin and half slate! It was completely derelict, and we had to bring water and power in, as well. Our builders, Elm Building Services, were absolutely amazing.” After all the hard work to make the building habitable, Nick and Kathy were determined to create something amazing. A big part of that vision was to have a beautiful kitchen as the showpiece of the upstairs space. But finding a firm that that matched their own creativity and drive was proving a challenge: “I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something different,” said Kathy. “But everywhere we went, there was a lack of vision. They weren’t coming up with anything I couldn’t conceive myself.” Until, that is, they visited award-winning firm KF Kitchens at Faraday Mill, run by Plymouth couple Nathan and Derinda Damarell and co-director, Simon Rice.

Another barnstorme
“We’d heard good things about KF Kitchens from a friend of mine, and we obviously did a lot of our own research,” said Kathy, “but we were quite far The barn as it was before development down the line when we went in to see them at their showroom. We showed them the layout of the room and said: ‘What would you do with this space?’ The kitchen they came up with was a Mark 1 model of what we wanted. “Nathan looked at the window at the end of the room and said ‘that’s your feature, that’s what everything should work around. And the kitchen just grew arms and legs from there. “What stood out was their approach, it was so refreshing,” added Kathy. “Nathan was very transparent. He asked us: ‘What are your necessities? What would you like but which aren’t necessities?’ And he went through the designs, with the prices of everything up front. “They were very genuine, and they didn’t try and sell us any add-ons. They just want everything to go smoothly, they want you to be happy with the results, so they only recommend brands that they trust.” Kathy and Nick chose the Langton ‘in-frame’ solid wood design by Burbidge Kitchens. With such a big space, they decided to have two islands in cashmere paint, while the cupboards are in charcoal paint. All the main appliances are in-built, including a full-size fridge and full-size upright freezer by Neff and a Neff dishwasher that emits a small LED light onto the floor to display the status of cycle. Nick and Kathy also treated themselves to a 48-bottle wine chiller in one of the islands. There are two Neff cookers - one a ‘slide & hide’ oven and the other a combination microwave oven with a warming drawer. The island worktops are Quartz Rapture 20mm, fitted by Mayflower Stone. One of the islands has a NEFF induction

hob, with the extractor built in. The other island has the undermount sink, with a Quooker boiling water tap. Each island has a pop-up power socket tower. With so much Nick and Kathy Cassidy storage in the cupboards and drawers, it means everything can be put away neatly, giving the room the feeling of light and space Nick and Kathy were looking for. The kitchen took eight days to fit: “It was a really nice experience,” said Nick. “They all work together like a family, very professional. And Gary, the fitter, was a perfectionist. “It was installed in the summer and we are chuffed to bits with it,” he added. “It has everything we wanted, and it doesn’t have anything we didn’t want. Would we recommend KF Kitchens? Absolutely, without any hesitation.”

FOOD MATTERS Award winning chef Ryan Marsland from The Fig Tree@36 restaurant brings readers his latest recipe - mushroom bolognaise, which has only recently been added to the menu and is already a big hit
The Fig Tree’s mushroom bolognaise will go down a storm! I’m gonna be honest here, this dish has taken me totally by surprise. We’ve only had the dish on at the Fig Tree for a few weeks, but everyone has been eating it. When I say everyone, I mean everyone….vegetarians, vegans, carnivores, me, Tanya, the whole team!! Last week I literally couldn’t make it fast enough! Obviously, I expected it to be nice, but its definitely a winner. The dish will obviously appeal to vegetarians, but the meatiness and richness of the mushrooms will satisfy the most ardent meat eaters also. A lovely, slow cooked, autumn dish, full of the classic bolognaise flavour. Trust the chef, you’re gonna love it! Only problem is you’ll want seconds and that wont leave mushroom for pudd…..hey I’m a fungi!!
Ryan Marsland
Here’s what you will need... √√ 250g mixed wild mushroom √√ 250g chestnut mushrooms √√ 4 large flat mushrooms √√ (or an equal amount of your choice…you’re the ones eating it!) √√ 1 glass of red wine, or 2, or a bottle….what the heck its dinner time √√ Splash of white wine vinegar √√ Dessert spoon of castor sugar √√ Veg stock √√ 1 onion √√ 6 cloves of garlic √√ 2 carrots √√ 2 sticks of celery √√ 1 leek √√ 1 pack fresh basil √√ 2 tins chopped tomatoes
...and here’s what you do 1 - first thing to do is make sure your mushrooms are clean, with wild mushrooms, just give them a wipe with a damp cloth, avoid soaking them in water. Now slice all your mushrooms. 2 – add some oil to a pan, and get it hot, then add all of your mushrooms to the pan, and let them cook. This bit is very important, you must let the mushrooms to fully cook, you actually want them to stick a little to the bottom of the pan as you stir them, this bit is where a huge chunk of the flavour comes from. 3 – whilst this is happening, finely chop your garlic, onion, celery, leek and carrots. When your mushrooms are cooked and the pan is nicely coated, remove them, and return the pan to the heat. Add all of your vegetables and garlic to the pan, and as we did with the mushrooms, let them caramelise and cook down, again becoming sticky in the pan.

Ryan’s mushroom bolognaise
4 – now add your vinegar and sugar, it should sizzle away almost instantly if your pan is hot enough. Next in with the red wine. You now want to cook or reduce this liquid down to almost nothing, allowing the vegetables to absorb all its flavour as they cook. 5 – add your tomatoes, the cooked mushrooms and a little veg stock. 6 – the easy bit….turn it down low, cover, and let it do its thing, whilst you look after that second bottle of wine. 7 – did I say second bottle? I meant glass….silly me! 8 – keep an eye on the bolognaise, on a low heat it should take about 45 minutes. You are looking for a nice, thick, glossy sauce, coating the mushrooms. If it is watery then cook some more. Don’t be tempted to whack some tomato puree in it, it’ll overpower the mushrooms, just be patient. When it is ready, chop your basil and chuck it in, season to taste, and I always like a little extra virgin olive oil stirred in at the end. 9 – serve with pasta or gnocchi (homemade if you are feeling it) bang some fresh parmesan on the top and tuck in. this dish may not change your life, but it will definitely point it in the right direction!! Buon appetito….happy eating.

Talented pianist in Guildhall concert Talented young pianist Guiseppe Guarrera will perform with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra at Plymouth Guildhall on November 27. The prize-winning 28-year-old from Sicily will play Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.2, with the concert also including works by Wagner and Beethoven. The programme begins with the famous overture from Wagner’s opera Tannhauser, which presents many of the important themes of the opera, commencing with theme from the well-known Pilgrims’ Chorus. The opera features dramatic orchestration and expansive themes and was apparently inspired by a medieval singing contest held in 13th century Germany at Wartburg Castle. Shostakovich wrote his 2nd Piano Concerto as a showcase for his 19-year-old son, on his first appearance with an orchestra, and is one of his most popular works. The concerto will be performed by Guiseppe Guarrera, who has been described as an ’extraordinary young talent’. In 2017 he won second prize at the Montreal International Competition and over the last year Giuseppe has obtained a prestigious Klavier Ruhr Festival scholarship and the Tabor Foundation Award. He has performed widely in Europe including solo performances with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, and the Orchestra del Teatro la Fenice. The final work of the concert is Beethoven’s Symphony No.3 the ‘Eroica’, one of his most celebrated works. Although grounded in the classical tradition, the symphony is considered to be a turning point in symphonic composition, stretching boundaries of length, form, harmony and orchestral virtuosity.

Patricia is all smiles again - thanks to Foot Solutions A Plympton woman whose chronic foot pain threatened her job is now all smiles thanks to Foot Solutions. Patricia Wilkinson spends most of the working day on her feet, so the foot pain she historically suffered was an extremely serious issue. Her troubles really started six years ago when she was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis by her GP. Plantar fasciitis is a common problem caused by inflammation to the plantar fascia ligament, which is the band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes. Patricia, who has worked at Drake Circus for 13 years said: “The pain was so bad that at times I could barely walk. I had to take pain killers because of the situation and in the end I had to take time off sick from work and I was worried about how I could cope in the future.” However, an appointment with her GP led Patricia to visit Foot Solutions in Royal Parade. “It was about three and a half years ago and my doctor told me to try Foot Solutions,” she said. “I visited the store and the staff could not have been more helpful. They carried out all sorts of tests and examinations which confirmed the long-standing condition I had.” The staff suggested customised orthotic insoles as well as recommending the right type of footwear - and the results, according to Patricia, were amazing. “I have no pain at all now and can cope with long shifts on my feet without any discomfort,” she said. When she is not working at Drake Circus, Patricia enjoys walking in and around Plympton - and as our photo shows, she enjoys every minute of it.
For an appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

Personal & Relationship Counselling - changing lives for 25 years! Take a stroll along Plymouth’s historic Looe Street, and you’ll find one of the city’s Elizabethan gems. Sitting on the corner with Batter Street, Number 36 was built as a three-storey merchant’s house. For the last 25 of its 400-plus years, the Grade II* listed building has been home to Personal & Relationship Counselling. The practice was established in 1994, making it a pioneer in the field. Since then, it has grown to eight qualified counsellors, offering specialisms in all the main areas of counselling under one roof. From initially having rooms on just the top floor, it now has the whole building, with seven counselling rooms and a reception.
We can do it all for you from start to finish! Whether you need to reach private individuals or business owners and managers, our Door to Door and Business to Business leaflet distribution services can reach your audience. While all eight counsellors are experienced in their own specialisms, they’re also qualified as general counsellors. Areas covered include stress and anxiety, depression, eating disorders, children and young people, drug and alcohol addiction, self-esteem, relationships, bereavement, couples counselling, post-natal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, long-term health conditions, physical and sexual abuse, and anger management. It means that anyone needing help though a difficult period in their life can be sure of seeing the counsellor for their specific needs. The team is led by Nigel Summerton. Nigel joined Personal & Relationship Counselling in 2000 and assumed the reins when founders John Washbrook and Gwen Cawse retired 10 years ago. Nigel uses the person-centred approach and specialises in relationship counselling for couples and individuals. He says there’s a very good reason why the practice has grown so much over the years: “We have established our reputation through the quality of our therapists and the specialisms we offer,” he said. “The skills we have under one roof are quite exceptional.” So, who are the counsellors behind the practice’s success? Jo Maguire is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and has been in practice for over 20 years, specialising in addictive behaviours and relationships. Psychotherapist Les Parson has over 30 years of experience, focusing on long-term work with people with mental health issues. Naheed Holmes used to be a retail manager before becoming a trained counsellor 10 years ago. She specialises in addictive behaviour, eating disorders and OCD. Former Royal Marine Steve Worsley has previous experience working with people who have offended. He also has a background of supporting sportsmen and women. He has been with the practice for 10 years and often works with former armed forces personnel. Jane Doggart has 25 years of experience and specialises in addictive behaviour - she previously worked as a substance misuse therapist at GP surgeries. The newest member of the team is Marcia Morton, who uses the humanistic approach, believing that we all have our answers from within. And Tracy Ede has over 20 years’ experience working with young people experiencing emotional, behavioural and trauma-based difficulties. It’s this issue of young people’s mental health that has become particularly noticeable in recent years, according to Nigel: “The number of young people we support has increased significantly, and that’s a reflection of the changing times. It reflects the pressures and the massive expectations felt by young people - and it also reflects the lack of provision of support.” There’s another group that is increasingly in need of support too, as Jo explained: “These are the adults ‘in the middle of the sandwich’. They’re working full-time, with children reaching a key stage in their lives, and also with elderly parents needing help. With all that happening, some just aren’t coping.”
BUSINESS MATTERS
Jo Maguire
After an initial chat, the practice can give people an idea of how many sessions they might need: “For a lot of clients, that will be 6-8 sessions,” said Jo. “With some areas, such as bereavement, they might only need a few sessions - they just need to speak about their emotion and their grief.” And, added Nigel: “The client is expert about themselves, they’ll know if they need to continue or not. But resolution is our job, that’s how we measure success. We want to help them get better, so they don’t need to see us anymore.” Over the years, Personal & Relationship Counselling has also collaborated with some of Plymouth’s biggest employers, providing support to employees through periods of difficulty in their work or personal lives, and offering training to managers, HR and welfare officers. Babcock, Plymouth University and St Luke’s The premises in Looe Street Hospice are among those who’ve taken part in the Employee Assistance Programme: “It’s hugely beneficial for employers to have their employees functioning as well as possible,” explained Nigel. “This support tends to be over six sessions, but other businesses also come to us on an occasional basis, where an individual is struggling and might just need a bit of support. We also run training courses in self-esteem, stress management and improving relationships.” Each one-hour counselling session costs £50 and, said Nigel: “It’s life-changing for a lot of people. Usually, people who come in have a heavy feeling on their shoulders, and whatever is causing that heavy feeling is affecting their daily lives and is preventing sleep. But often, they don’t want to face what’s causing it, it’s too scary, and so it continues to affect them, sometimes until they can’t function. “We can help. A skilled counsellor will listen, and it doesn’t take long before the client is able to open up and everything comes out. People say: ‘I really didn’t want counselling, but I’m so glad I came’. So, we’ve lifted that heavy feeling. But it’s important that the person is committed to making change.” The ninth member of the Personal & Relationship Counselling team is receptionist and general manager, Karen Whittaker. Karen is key to keeping everything running smoothly. If you feel you might benefit by seeing one of the practice counsellors, phone or email Karen to book an appointment with the counsellor that meets your individual needs.

SW Blinds - the family firm where the personal touch is guaranteed If you’re looking for fabulous made-to-measure blinds and curtains that are made right here in Plymouth and fitted by an experienced, friendly team, then SW Blinds is just the place for you. The firm has just celebrated its 20th birthday, and its 5th anniversary at its showroom and factory at Bell Close in Plympton. It’s a lovely story, which has its beginnings in 1960, when local couple Arthur and Amparo Sheppard established the original business. Then, it was called Plymouth Blind Makers and was based at Faraday Mill. In 1999, their son, Arturo, rebranded and renamed the firm after a chance meeting with his founding co-director, Debbie Webster: “Debbie was actually a customer and I supplied and fitted the blinds at her new home,” explained Arturo. “I was running the business on my own at the time, but we got talking and decided to rebrand it with Debbie as codirector. And it’s been a real success story ever since we met. People always assume the SW in SW Blinds stands for South West, but it actually stands for Sheppard and Webster!”

In fact, many of the team back in 1999 are still here: James Thatcher, who joined straight from school and recently became operations director; Karen James, the senior sales adviser; and Rick Stinchomb, who joined the previous business 28 years ago and is now production manager: “And the majority of the lads have been here for at least 10 years as well,” said Arturo. “We work as a family and a team - and people like that,” said Arturo, “they like the personal touch, and knowing that we’re not salespeople in a national call centre. They want to be able to deal with the same person, not lots of different people - and someone with experience.” One of the big changes following Debbie’s arrival was the introduction of domestic blinds and soft furnishings. Before then, most of the blinds, curtains, exterior canopies and awnings were made for the commercial Keith making blinds sector including developers, and public buildings such as schools. Whilst that work continues to keep them busy, it’s the move into the domestic market that has seen the firm grow rapidly. “When we launched as SW Blinds in 1999, we had one van and a handful of people,” said James. “Now we have five vans and 14 people - and in 2014 we moved into these premises, which was an empty shell when we bought it.” At the front of the building is the showroom, which has hundreds of samples for customers to view. The purposebuilt workshops are where all the curtains and 80% of the blinds are made: “We have one of the biggest ranges of blinds, curtains and shutters in the South West, with a huge choice of fabrics, colours and styles,” said Arturo. “Because we are an independent firm, we’re not tied to one supplier, so we can source fabric from all the top brands and from all over the world.”
SW Blinds offers a free home consultation - Arturo always arrives with a carload of pattern books - while there is also a free measuring and fitting service with all blinds. But the personal customer service doesn’t end there, as Arturo explained: “I offer people ideas and advice on the colours and fabrics that would work well in their environment - so I look at the room and I make the blind fit the room. “It’s not a case of just putting a blind up; it’s about matching the blind with the room. So, from start to finish, our customers will get the service they deserve. That’s why most of our customers are recommendations or repeat business, and it’s Sam making curtains why we’ve enjoyed so much success.” The big trend currently is for wooden shutters and Venetians, while grey is still the colour of choice for many customers. And, says Arturo, more and more people are moving away from ‘off the shelf’ blinds: “There’s no comparison between made-to-measure blinds and ready-made. Why would you put something up that didn’t look right or didn’t fit properly?” Next year doesn’t only mark the 60th anniversary of the original family firm being launched - it’s also the 40th anniversary of Arturo joining the business: “I went to my dad’s business in the summer holidays when I was 16 - and I

never left! It’s the best thing I ever did because I absolutely love it.” Visit the SW Blinds showroom for a chat and to view the range on offer, or phone to book a free home consultation. Opening times are 8.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 1pm on Saturdays.

By Fiona Newton of Plymouth Garden Centre There are four types of Christmas trees that we stock, each of which look and feel different. The first is the most popular – the Nordmann Fir. This is a gorgeous tree, with deep green, long, waxy needles. The needles are soft to the touch and densely packed on the branches. Nordmann Firs are wide bushy trees that form the typical Christmas tree, triangle shape. They have thick, bushy branches that are strong and sturdy, making them great candidates to be heavily decorated and will support your lights with ease. They have great needle retention and are the best for holding on to their needles. The most popular size is the 1.8m (6ft) tree, these sell out quickly, so either order from us in advance and we will choose a great looking tree for you or come down early before they sell out. Last year we trialled a pallet of Slimline Nordmanns, which were carefully cultivated in the field to produce thinner trees, but still dense and perfect for narrower spaces, these will be popular again this year. Our low needle drop tree is the Fraser Fir. These are still a relatively new tree to be offered, and many people still do not know much about them, but they are gaining in popularity. They are known as slim line trees with a narrower shape than traditional trees, but still retaining that iconic conical shape. These are great trees for those where space is limited, or perhaps want a more modern, contemporary Christmas tree. The needles are bluey, green colour, with and almost silver sheen to them. They are slightly stiffer than a Nordmann firs needles, but are not prickly. They also have an extremely pleasant scent that will waft throughout your home. The branches tend to be full and dense, giving the tree a full appearance. After the success of its reintroduction to our Christmas tree

Guide to your perf
Fiona Newton on a Christmas tree mission
stocking last year, we will be stocking a few more Noble Firs again. The Noble Fir has needles that turn upward, exposing the lower branches and underneath of the needles. This gives it a silvery blue hue against green. They are known for their beauty, scent, excellent needle retention and stiff branches make it a good tree for heavy ornaments, as well as providing excellent greenery for wreaths and garland. The last type of tree we stock is the traditional Norway Spruce. This the good old fashioned tree that people have been decorating since the Victorians. It has the classical conical shape and the delicious pine scent we all associate with Christmas. It has stood the test of time and many of our customer will not choose anything else. A beautiful tree it is, but it does shed its needles and the needles are very prickly. However it is a great tree to use in a cool room, or if you are on a tight budget, as they are very good value for money. The needles are fine and narrow, and cover the branches and arms. These are very bushy, full trees. Wear gloves when decorating. To take care of your tree, we recommend that you cut the bottom inch off the bottom of the trunk, so that you create a fresh wound for it to drink from. The base can form a seal from the initial cutting that will prevent it from taking up water. Think of your Christmas tree as a giant cut flower, to stay fresh you need to remove a small section of the base and give it plenty of water to drink. Christmas trees drink a lot of water, they can drink anywhere from ½ pint to a pint of water a day, so make sure it’s topped up regularly. We can trim the bottom of the stump for you in the garden centre if you don’t feel confident enough to do it at home. Once you get your tree home, soak it in a bucket of water outside or somewhere cool for a few hours if you can. This will just guarantee that your tree will be as fresh as it can be for decorating. Choose a suitable position for your tree in your home. Ideally a place where it won’t get knocked over, close to a power point and away from a source of heating is perfect. Placing your tree next to a heat source will result in it drying out and dropping some needles. Also make sure that it is not near any open flames. Choose a tree to fit your room. If you have a small space, a huge tree is going to look out of place, cramped and squashed.
choosing fect tree! On the other hand, a small tree in a large space will look lost and lack any impact or statement. Remember that your tree will be raised approximately 30cm (12”) from the floor on its stand, so bear that in mind when choosing the height. If it is possible try to bring your Christmas tree stand with you, as this allows you to find you a tree that will fit the stand. You will not believe how many people choose a tree with a stump that is three times wider than their stand! Shaving chunks off the trunk to get it to fit your stand is not a good idea, it prevents your tree from drinking, which will cause it to drop needles. If you need a new stand or are starting from scratch, we are happy to help you decide which stand is right for you. If you have a stand which requires the base tree to be drilled, we can also do that for you in store at the garden centre.
Christmas Wreaths Christmas wreaths are a fundamental part in our Christmas traditions. Hanging one on the front door, or using one as a table centre piece is as synonymous with celebrating Christmas as the tree is. Its origins, much like a lot of our Christmas traditions was originally Pagan. It was used to celebrate Yule, the festival used to mark the winter solstice, celebrating the return of the sun and the promise of spring to come. Christianity adopted the Yule wreath during the 16th century, using evergreen foliage to represent eternal life. Holly was chosen for its spikey leaves and red berries that represented the crown of thorns and the drops of blood it drew. Hanging one on your front door was a way to symbolise the invitation of Jesus into your home. Regardless of your beliefs, hanging a wreath on your door nowadays symbolises bringing the spirit of Christmas into the home, along with good luck. We will start to get our locally made wreaths into store from the last week of November, we will also be making a large proportion of our wreaths in store. If you want to be creative and make your own, here is our handy step-by-step on how we make ours.
Step-By-Step Wreath Making 1) Select your hoop. We have Chaplet (teardrop) in two sizes, Cross and Ring in three sizes. Oasis rings are available and are perfect for indoor table top wreaths but we don’t recommend using them outside. 2) Select your lining material. We recommend conifer as it is cheap and flexible. You can also use moss but it is more expensive and can be quite fiddly! 3) Wire conifer in. Using floristry wire (24G 0.56mm x 100g), follow your chosen shape and make sure it’s tight to the shape of your hoop. 4) Select base foliage. We use Christmas Tree Fir (Nordmann or Noble). Wire it on top of your conifer or moss using your floristry wire. 5) Select your decorations. You can go straight to your baubles, ribbons or ornaments, in any colour theme you want! For a natural looking wreath use holly, berries and pine cones. You can also use flowers, fruit, cinnamon sticks or a popular favourite is candied peel. Wire these in on top of your foliage. www.cornerstonevision.com

Jobs for November • Well winter is here more or less. With winter comes rain and with rain comes Algae on the paths and steps. Use a patio cleaner to rid yourself of this trip hazard. • Don’t forget to buy yourself some paraffin to get the heater going in the greenhouse. Last year I spent about £20.00 on heating my greenhouse but to replace my plants would have cost hundreds if I had one big freeze up. • Ensure that all wet leaves are cleared as they can get slippery. • Despite the information on the packets, Camellias still need feeding to help to swell the buds. Use an eriacaceous feed. • Ornamental grasses that have finished flowering need to be cut back. • Grape vines can now be severely pruned and the sticks can be used to make Christmas garlands. • Holes in borders can be filled with dogwoods (Cornus) that have coloured stems. The winter sun will shine on these and give interest. 6) For extra glam! An optional addition, but increasingly popular, is adding wire battery operated lights to the wreath. Copper wire lights are perfect as you won’t see the wire and many come with a timer so you don’t have to manually switch on and off! 7) The finishing touch. Add a bow to your finished wreath. You can choose any colour or shape to match your wreath, either pre-made, or if you are really crafty you can make your own! Use a wreath hanger to hang on your front door and await the admiration of your visitors.

TRAVEL MATTERS
Thomas Cook collapse – a Last month we saw the collapse of Thomas Cook, the oldest name in the package holiday business. I can honestly say I’m not surprised at the demise, but can’t believe a business with a very reputable name and great staff, was left in such a mess. Management at a high level had continually made bad decisions, resulting in too many retail shops and a concentration of destinations, such as Turkey and Tunisia, leaving them vulnerable when those destinations proved unpopular with the public. I have worked in the travel industry for over 35 years and this is the biggest tour operator failure since Intasun (ILG) in 1991. The industry has changed massively over the years, making sure that travellers’ money is protected when booking a package holiday, or flight, by having an ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence). Since the Thomas Cook collapse, I have been inundated with calls and visitors to my office, who have booked with on-line agencies and been left to their own devices, not being offered alternatives or advice on what to do. It’s times like this that we should all realise the value of face to face communication and that trying to save money by booking on-line is a false economy. If these companies do not answer their phones when there’s a crisis you are left on your own. If you book through your local travel agent, we are here to help you through those problems, and be a face to give you support and answers to the questions you may have. Next time you go to book your holiday, just remember there is a value to booking with someone local who will be there when needed. If you did have a holiday with Thomas Cook and need to make a claim, please visit - thomascook.caa.co.uk. If you need help with your claims form please visit the agent you booked with, who should be happy to help.
On a brighter note……
Whilst searching for suitable destinations for a short break with my wife and friends recently, Malta arose as an option, for three nights over a long weekend, flying from a local airport. Initially, we were all somewhat sceptical about booking as our overriding perception of Malta was based on its longstanding popularity with primarily elderly visitors. However, the frequent, direct flights from Exeter and Bristol with

By Travel Expert Anthony Goord Ryanair made the logistics of our weekend away just too appealing, and we decided to confirm the four day break staying at the Juliani Hotel in St Julians. A three-hour flight from Exeter brings you to the group of Maltese islands, which boast a surprisingly good climate in the early spring and late autumn months for those wishing to avoid the hot dry peak summer period. Very shortly after arrival, we could see that our pre-conceived ideas of Malta were unfounded, and we became pleasantly surprised by the reality of what the island had to offer. Looking at the skyline, it was evident that Malta is booming but this did not affect our visit in any way at all. There is undoubtedly a great deal of investment in tourism resulting in some inevitable building work in certain areas, but this is being done very discreetly and did not disturb us at any point, nor detract from the stunning views over Spinola Bay from our hotel balcony and rooftop pool. The locals seem excited by the resurging popularity of the islands, and look positively upon the infrastructure developments as imperative to improve access and enhance the overall holiday experience for tourists. There is an excellent public bus system in operation on Malta with frequent, cheap services linking all the principal towns and resorts with Valetta, and each other. Car hire is reasonable, plentiful, and you will be driving on the ‘right’ side of the road, but be aware that traffic can be busy around Valetta and parking is at a premium, so some careful planning would be advisable. The resorts surrounding Valetta’s stunning harbour virtually blend together, and a pristine sea-front promenade stretches for several miles, enabling visitors to walk along the coastline (mainly on the flat) all the way from St Julian’s to Sliema and beyond. Views are dominated by the abundant sandstone buildings, both old and new, which appear to turn golden in the glow of the sun. It is difficult to summarise the appeal of Valetta in such a short article, but it is a strikingly beautiful city with some truly spectacular architecture and a very cosmopolitan vibe, which reflect its unique history of occupation. Both the sights and the feel of the city represent an

unusual mixture of British, Mediterranean and Arabic cultures and it is surprisingly compact within its fortified walls. Watching the gun salute from Upper Barrakka Gardens to welcome cruise ship arrivals was entertaining and gave us incredible panoramic views over the Grand Harbour. However, a harbour boat cruise the following day offered some of the most spectacular views of the city from the perfect vantage point with some very interesting commentary. The rocky nature of Malta means that good sandy beaches are limited but the crystal-clear waters make it an excellent choice for snorkelling or scuba diving. Boat trips are plentiful and very reasonably priced, with many taking in the smaller neighbouring islands of Gozo and Comino where you can swim in the world-famous Blue Grotto. These islands are much smaller and quieter than Malta, and attract visitors looking to get away from it all in peaceful environment, perhaps staying in one of the many converted farmhouses.
The choice of restaurants in all of the main resorts was astounding. Italian venues undoubtedly dominate, due to the number of settlers on Malta, but all types of cuisine are on offer to suit all tastes and we can honestly say that during our three evenings in St Julians, we enjoyed three excellent meals at prices very similar to the UK. Sliema and Valetta also boast some rather impressive shopping areas with a mixture of chic designer boutiques and familiar department stores, which took us somewhat by surprise. To summarise, I would honestly say that, despite initially being driven towards Malta due the availability of flights from Exeter or Bristol over a long weekend, our perceptions proved to be inaccurate and we were very pleasantly surprised. If you are searching for somewhere with a reliable weather record (even out of season), some interesting sights, friendly people and excellent cuisine, it could be a great choice whatever your age! BUSINESS MATTERS
Red hot deals and customer care at HBH Woolacotts’ electrical superstore this Christmas! It’s a busy time for the South West’s biggest independent electrical retailer, HBH Woolacotts, with THREE major promotion events at their huge Plymouth superstore at Coypool Retail Park. The first event, from November 1 right up until Christmas Day, is the Christmas Gift Promotion, with special offers on smaller electrical and household items that would make perfect Christmas presents. The second, Black Friday on November 29, is a short burst promotion that puts the spotlight on larger tech products, with great one-off deals on items such as big screen TVs. And finally, the New Year sale, starting on December 27, will have offers on items across all product categories and will run until the end of January. It’s not just the sale items where the prices will tempt you, however, because HBH Woolacotts has a ‘we won’t be beaten’ price-match promise which covers like for like prices from all major local, national and internet retailers. And, currently, there is a free delivery and installation service on everything over £100 which is a service you will not be able to get anywhere else. The showroom, opened two years ago, is at the former B&Q store at Coypool, just off the main road from the Marsh Mills roundabout as you head towards Plympton - the retail park is the same turn-off as McDonald’s, but a little further down and to the right. For customers wanting to view all electrical product ranges and major brands under one roof, the store is an absolute

dream! There are over 5,000 in-stock products, from kitchen appliances and floorcare to TV and audio, with everything inbetween that are all available to either collect from the store or have delivered to your home. Brands include Bosch, Miele, Bose, Panasonic, Beko, Neff, Samsung, Smeg, Siemens, Sonos, LG, Zanussi, AEG, Dyson, KEF, Hoover, Rangemaster and Yamaha. The superstore is the ninth and biggest showroom to be opened by HBH Woolacotts across Devon and Cornwall - but the family behind the business aren’t new to Plymouth. Previously, the business ran the Panasonic Store and the Plymouth Sony Centre in the city centre - both of these are now incorporated within the HBH Woolacotts superstore. Director Chris Hemmerle and his sister Lizzy are the third generation to enter the business which was started in 1976 in Bude by their grandfather, Ted, and continued by their dad, Martin: “Grandad is 94 now and he still comes into the shop in Bude on most days!” said Chris. “He still loves it, although he’s obviously not as involved as he used to be.” The Plymouth showroom is over two floors: downstairs, you’ll find branded TV displays, home audio including a premium hi-fi and home cinema zone, IT, photography and a large range of household appliances including laundry, refrigeration and dishwashing. The upstairs is dedicated to cooking, with a full range of kitchen appliances including range cookers and built-in appliances, while the Cookshop has a wide range of small kitchen appliances, cookware, kitchenware and utensils - there’s even a bespoke kitchen showroom managed by Kettle Kitchens. The store is led by a management team that boasts 70 years of experience between them: general manager Nigel Facey and managers Neil Grace and Paul Solomon. Paul has been with the company for 29 years: “We pride ourselves on our product knowledge and customer service,” he said, “we want to ensure that our customers receive the best possible advice on the array of products we have. “And all of our products are set up to demonstrate, so our customers get to see and hear them working,” he added. “It means they can compare brands and models and make an informed choice. Our Dolby Atmos demo hi-fi room even has a couple of sofas for customers to sit and take in the sound.” As well as the price match promise and the in-store customer service, the after-sales care also makes a big difference for HBH Woolacotts’
customers. Deliveries are swift - there are no issues over late deliveries because of a clog-up in the delivery system - and all repairs under warranty are done by the company’s own teams of white goods and AV engineers, ensuring a quick and efficient service and direct communication with your local store and staff. As an exclusive service and for essential appliances and special circumstances, they’ll even leave you with a loan appliance to minimise the inconvenience: “Your product will be repaired by our own, trained engineers and it won’t be sent to another part of the country, not to be seen again for weeks and weeks,” said Chris. So, what’s hot in the world of electrical retail right now? “Smart TVs are probably the biggest thing at the moment,” said Chris. “More people are streaming what they’re watching. If you’ve not bought a TV in recent years, you’ll be blown away by the quality of what’s on offer now - and the prices are really strong. The whole area of home entertainment such as big screen TVs and wireless home audio systems such as Sonos is very popular.” Opening up the electrical superstore was a big step for the firm but, says Chris, it’s proved a great success: “It has been fantastic. We always wanted to stay in Plymouth, but single

brand shops on the High Street just weren’t offering what people wanted. “Shoppers want to be able to park right outside and they want to see all the products and all the brands under one roof. The Plymouth superstore allows us to offer shoppers this sort of experience - our Panasonic store within the superstore is even bigger than the one we had in the city centre. So yes, it has been a great move for us - and for our customers, too.” Opening times are 9.30am to 6pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays, closed on Boxing Day for family time. Finance is available, including buy now pay later and interest free credit on selected items, subject to status. The vast majority of products are also available online, at www.hbh-woolacotts.co.uk and if you sign up to the companies ‘Privilege Club’ you’ll receive regular updates with the latest promotions, in store events and exclusive offers.
