New cycle route launched on Rame

Mount Edgcumbe approach path

A new cycle route connecting Cremyll to Cawsand was launched on January 24. The cycle route - launched by Cornwall AONB working with partners - will improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists with new waymarking between Cremyll Quay and Maker with cycle parking facilities at the Barrow Centre in the Country Park, at Maker Heights and in Cawsand Village in the existing car park. Rame Head is the second smallest of the 12 sections that make up the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) at just 7.8 km2. It does, however, make up for its lack of size with the wealth of treasures which this section contains, including Mount Edgcumbe Country Park and the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand. There is also a wealth of fortifications that date from the period of the American War of Independence (1775-83) through to the Lord Palmerston era in the 1850s. To support the growth in sustainable, low impact tourism, the Cornwall AONB working with Cornwall Council, Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, the Rame Conservation Trust and Sustrans has launched the cycle route as part of the development of a long-distance cycle route between Plymouth, Looe and the Camel Trail at Bodmin. Funding by the South and East Cornwall Local Action Group to the tune of £15,113 through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development has provided new waymarking and cycle parking to encourage more people to access the Rame Peninsula as well as to

make trips by foot and cycle. The Rame Conservation Trust own several of the fortifications just east of Mount Edgcumbe at Maker Heights and are actively working with the AONB on stabilising these important heritage features. Maker Heights commands a stunning view of most of the Rame Head Peninsula and across Plymouth Sound towards Wembury, with a campsite open during the spring and summer as well as a café run by an ex River Cottage chef. Maker Camp has a huge significance for the people of Plymouth, since between the 1920s and 80s it hosted thousands of inner city children during school holidays and for many formed their only experience with the natural environment. The investment in new provision also

supports more area wide proposals by Cornwall Council and Sustrans to develop a network of strategic cycle routes across Cornwall and especially in South East Cornwall, better connecting Plymouth to Looe and Looe to Liskeard. The route, which is now in place provides a perfect opportunity to explore this relatively undiscovered section of the AONB as well as tackle a New Year’s resolution to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle. Gill Pipkin, Chairperson of the Cornwall AONB Partnership, said: “Our management plan seeks to work in partnership with Cornwall Council, Sustrans and local communities to increase access opportunities for cyclists across our area to ensure that we can provide for recreation in ways that do not harm our environment or increase the need for car parking and the congestion on our country roads.” George Trubody, Cornwall Councillor for the Rame Peninsula and Joint Chair of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park Joint Committee, said: “It is great news that we are now able to launch this new cycle route. “The Rame Peninsula is one of the least visited sections of Cornwall, but also very important for its scenic beauty and environment. Developments like this cycle route will help us to attract visitors to Rame without the disadvantages that can go hand in hand with more visitors including the need for bigger car parks and dealing with congestion during busy periods”.

Family Foraging progress

The Family Foraging Kitchen was set up on the Rame Peninsula in 2013 by forager and wild food expert, Vix Hill-Ryder. In the ensuing seven years, she’s created a buzz around foraging and wild ingredients, including helping local families lower their food bills and have the confidence to access the nutritious free larder on their doorstep. Vix has also watched proudly as one of the chefs she’s taught most recently took the knowledge and skills into television fame on Masterchef! In 2017 the company became a registered social enterprise and now has an outdoor education base at Horsepool, on part of the Antony Estate. From there they offer a wide range of traditional and heritage skills and crafts, from bee keeping, dry stone walling and basket weaving, to moccasin making, crochet and spoon carving. Going into the new year, they hope to see many more local faces enjoying their courses and activities, all of which are listed on their website at www. familyforagingkitchen.co.uk or contact 01752 823424.

U3A is coming to Torpoint! A new organisation is coming to Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula in February. The University of the Third Age will hold its first meeting on Thursday February 27 at the Torpoint Council Chambers in York Road at 2pm. Although it has university in its name there are no exams! Just members who are no longer in full time employment or bringing up a young family, sharing interests and knowledge, getting out and about, meeting people, learning new skills and having fun! There will be a monthly meeting where members can hear an invited

speaker, socialise, meet new people and hear about new groups they might like to join. This will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 2pm at the Council Chambers in Torpoint. A Steering Committee is already in place so please don’t worry about being asked to join any committees, although if you are interested, you would be very welcome. There was tremendous support for the initial meeting when local residents heard about the interesting and fun activities that other U3As enjoy, and how Torpoint might launch its own U3A.

Everyone’s ideas and suggestions for groups for the area have all been taken on board as part of a plan to offer a range of activities – which will further evolve with members’ wishes. Groups may include Dartmoor walks, theatre visits, board games, dining out, conservation, wine, local walks, art and crafts, yoga, National Trust visits, classical concert visits, belly dancing, archery, photography and many more! Torpoint U3A can be what members want it to be, so please go along on February 27 and find out more. There will be no obligation to join, but there will be tea and cake!

HMS Raleigh’s physiotherapist, Cherry Powell, is on a mission to raise £2,000 to secure her place in this year’s London marathon. The 55-year-old runner is one of five chosen to run for Walking with the Wounded – a charity that supports Armed Forces veterans and their families. She said: “Working at Raleigh with the military, I see the difficulties some people can face returning to civvy street and the charity helps people on their way. I’m also a veteran myself as I was in the Royal Air Force, so veterans’ charities are close to my heart. “I was absolutely delighted when I got the email to say I’d been given a place in the marathon. I’ve tried to enter through the ballot before so to get a place and be a member of such a small group, I feel quite privileged.” Cherry, who is a member of the Plymouth Musketeers running club, is no stranger to long distance running. She has completed eight marathons, the last one being the Giants Head, a challenging, hilly, off road run, held in Dorset last year. This will be Cherry’s first attempt at the London Marathon. She said: “My very first marathon was when I was in my 30s. I completed it in 3 hours 43 minutes, but I’m obviously a bit older now and don’t achieve those times anymore. I’m aiming for 4.30 to 4.45 in the London marathon, but I’ll just have to see how it goes on the day.” Cherry has a number of fund-raising ideas to make sure she meets the target set by the charity. She has a coffee morning planned within Raleigh next month, as well as a bric-a-brac sale and cakes at her local church, Trinity Hall, in Tor Lane, Plymouth, on February 29, which starts at 11.30am. Cherry is also selling football scratch cards and has set-up an online donation page uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ CherryPowell As well as work and her fund-raising Cherry is focussed on her training. She said: “My training is going really well. I had a blip over Christmas when I had the lurgy, but I’m back to running four times a week, doing some tempo runs and then a long run. I haven’t picked up any injuries so far and I’m on track.” Looking for a new career after the RAF, Cherry studied for a sports science degree and then decided to specialise as a physiotherapist. She has worked as a civilian at HMS Raleigh since 2008. Cherry said: “I realised almost immediately that being a physio was the job for me and I haven’t looked back. I love working at Raleigh. Having the young recruits and the older Ship’s Company at Raleigh, means I get patients from all backgrounds and I also get a variety of injuries, which makes the job more interesting.”

Noah competing in the World Championships in Australia

Not much in the way of words this time, but after going crazy over the Christmas and New Year period and with working many long hours in preparation, application and concluding all the activities it’s hard to put away the hype of everything that went on without one more look at the fun that all of us in the Lions’ Club had. We had a blast achieving everything we did and can only apologise on behalf of the club to anyone who was disappointed to not see Santa. We appreciate how much support you gave us over the festive period, we certainly appreciate

Talented sailor Noah stars in world championships Talented young sailor Noah Rees is celebrating success in the 2019 RS Aero 7 2019 World Championships in Australia. Noah, 19, from Millbrook achieved third place overall, putting in great performances to finish as the best British competitor and beating top sailors from all over the world. Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club marked the success with a special celebration evening attended by members of Cawsand Bay Sailing Club as well as those from Torpoint. Noah’s parents were also present as Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club Commodore Bob Wilkey presented Noah with a club tie. A total of nearly 80 sailors took part in 11 races in the three divisions of the RS Aero World Championships, with nearly half of those competing against Noah in RS Aero 7 class. Noah achieved a host of third and fourth places, finishing second in the final race to secure third spot overall. Noah said: “Taking part in the championships in Melbourne was one of the most exciting weeks of my life, gaining more insight into Australia and sailing in different conditions in Port Phillip Bay, an incredible place to sail.

“Before the event I had done a couple of training sessions with top sailors Marc Jacobi (USA), and Australians Rhett Gowans and Michael O’Brien in which the sea breezes had been building to a solid 18- 22 knots with big steep waves.” The training helped Noah to finish ahead of his big rival from the UK, Peter Barton, who won the National and European Championships in 2019. Noah added: “The main reason for my improvement in the last few months since the Europeans is definitely down to spending more time in the gym than I have before which has made me be more solid in the boat as well as more flexible which has helped develop my downwind technique allowing me to be more loose and dynamic. “Overall it has been an incredible event where I have met so many new people and learnt so much. As well as my result being better than I’d ever have expected. I am very pleased to be third overall and first Brit. “None of this could have happened without the support and sponsorship of Al Keir and Resilience Communications which has been a huge help this year helping me to focus on my training.”

As a club we’re proud to say that, along with others in the area, we helped with the purchase of a new, valuable piece of equipment for Torpoint first responders. The new ‘Raizer’ Chair will be a great help in assisting responders’ in cases where patients have fallen over and would normally be very difficult to move. We were lucky to be given a working demonstration and were very impressed at how easy it was to assemble and the speed in which it operated.

New Member Julie was badged up at our last meeting and is pictured (above) with her sponsor Judith, with Lion President Paul and Lion Dave. Welcome Julie, we hope you will be happy with us. Finally, our treasurer worked out how much of the funds we hold in trust, that we, on your behalf gave out in aid to various good causes locally, nationally and internationally. A breakdown of all will be published in the next issue of the Chronicle but the amounts are as follows: £10,300 distributed to local causes, £1,175 to national causes and a further £1,550 for international appeals. That’s a grand total of just over £13,025 in the last 12 months. Thank you all once again for your support and if you have any questions all you have to do is ask, we are open to all.

Festive fun and celebrations at Torcare Torcare’s care homes enjoyed a festive December with an abundance of decoration making for the local church Christmas tree display. There were Christmas fayres and raffles, plus visits by talented choirs and local school children, which were all relished by the residents and staff. Residents were also lucky enough to enjoy the musical talents of the Martyn and Sarah Fowler duet at the nursing home. What a fabulous afternoon! They were delighted to party with Peggy Boyd who enjoyed her 85th birthday last month with all her friends at the Porte Rouge home and with cake of course! There was a double celebration on New Year’s Eve as everyone toasted the end of a great year and our lovely resident Sid on his birthday. Christmas day saw a very special arrival as six brand new baby chicks were born to Shelby, The Old Vicarage’s resident chicken – a complete surprise to all. The chicks have yet to be named, but rumour has it there are possibly some nativity themed names in the mix!

Prestigious awards for Maker Memories Project Maker is renowned for nurturing its young musicians and developing a strong music culture. This has now been acknowledged by the Community Archives and Heritage Group who recently visited Patchwork Studios in the Barrack Block to present the Maker Memories Project with the awards for best Community Engagement 2019 and Overall Winner 2019 in the UK and Ireland. The evening was celebrated by performances from musicians who have a very strong connection to Maker. Flora Bennetts, aged 14, who attends Patchwork Youth Music Lab and Torpoint Community College, opened the evening with a stunning performance. This was followed by a spellbinding set by

Tom and Jake Calladine and an outstanding performance from up and coming Cornish band Haunt the Woods. Tom, Jake and Phoenix Elleschild – the guitarist in Haunt the Woods – regularly attended youth music club at Maker whilst studying at Torpoint Community College and developed their performance skills at the music events at the much loved Energy Room at Maker. Jane Golding, chair of the Community Archive and Heritage Group, gave an opening speech that recognised the value of music heritage at Maker. She said: “Maker Memories presented us with an entry that clearly demonstrated all the above and more! We were particularly impressed by both the range of activities

you have employed and also the diverse range of communities you have engaged and empowered through your work. “The development of and support to volunteers, how you have fostered intergenerational understanding, and worked collaboratively with students of all ages. The stories, memories, images, documents and film that you have collected and shared through events such as a fun day and tea dance, touring exhibition, social media and website and, of course, most distinctively, through music. “We are thrilled to see your partnership with The Box; this is very important to the project and supports and underpins the recording and archiving standards you follow. Congratulations to Maker Memories on being

the first community exhibition at The Box when it opens next year. “Moreover, Maker Memories is clearly a community-led project where the well-being of all participants is valued and nurtured. I think what really stood out in your award entry is a clear sense of how community engagement is at the heart of the project and how this brings a dynamic sense of purpose to the process of recording and safeguarding the heritage of Maker Camp and the heritage of Maker as a music venue. “A strong sense of place, connection and pride in the local area runs through this engagement.” Youth Music Lab at Patchwork Studios runs in term time on Tuesdays from 6pm to 8pm and is free.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Torpoint As normal, New Year’s Eve brought out the revellers to the ferry lanes at Torpoint to see in 2020, in a very noisy but jolly fashion. The lanes started to fill up at five minutes to 12 and by midnight the place was crammed with fun loving people enjoying the atmosphere. Fancy dressers were up to the usual standard with plenty of well thought up costumes. At the stroke of midnight a rousing cheer and plenty of friendly hugs were shared. It was another evening of celebrations in Torpoint which passed along with no trouble and fun was had by all.

Celebrating New Year’s Day in Cawsand

Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions club held their Annual New Year’s Day charity dip in Cawsand Bay. The hardy swimmers turned up at Maker with Rame Community Hall in Kingsand for registration and judging of fancy dress costumes. There was such an incredible amount of work that went into costumes, which were absolutely ruined going into the sea! The turn out was as usual well attended for everyone trying to raise money for charity. The parade proceeded from the hall just after midday with MP Sheryll Murray leading the way from Kingsand to Cawsand, collecting donations along the way. They were met at the beach by an amazing amount of visitors and supporters. It was a very happy scene on the beach before the signal to proceed with the mass charge to the sea at full pace. Well done to everyone who participated and for the Lions Club volunteers who organise and control the event each year. Happy New Year from them with a big thank you for the continuing support and forward into 2020.

Search on for talented youngsters like Jasmine Talented youngsters have the chance to audition for the British Youth Music Theatre in February - and one local girl knows just what that can mean in terms of a stage career. Jasmine Smith who is 18 and from Torpoint, took part in the national auditions last year and was then chosen to take the lead role in Fight Like A Girl, the bold and empowering musical theatre show about female boxing, performed at Mountview’s brand-new theatre in London last August. Former Devonport High School for Girls student Jasmine commented: “I auditioned for British Youth Music Theatre by complete chance. I saw an advert for my local audition on the Saturday - this was on the Thursday - I did some research and applied for it that evening. “I thought it would be a good way to spend my weekend and didn’t really think anything more of it until I received a letter saying I’d been given a place on Fight Like A Girl!” BYMT is the leading musical theatre charity for young people and is famous for shaping the careers of thousands of young people, many of whom have successfully entered creative industries and currently perform in the West End. Their prestigious alumni include the UK’s Official Number 1 Artist of the Decade Ed Sheeran, Oscar award-winner Sam Smith, Charlotte Ritchie, Laurence Samuels and many others. Jasmine, who is now studying at the Musical Theatre Academy in London added: “Overall, the project was just incredible. From the very first day, we all knew how much of a challenge it was going to be to stage the show. I think that’s what made it so exciting. “It’s really special to be able to work with the

creative team in the room with you and have the material tailored to our cast as we went along, it helped us to really give the show some truth. “It’s hard to think of a way that I haven’t benefited from this experience. It’s given me a huge confidence boost, professional working experience and great industry contacts. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Fight Like A Girl and the team and BYMT and I am so thankful for that!” BYMT is coming to the Barbican Theatre in Plymouth on February 8 with its National Auditions Tour that includes 19 cities across the UK and Ireland to audition young people aged 11-21, who like Jasmine, have a flair for performing and theatre-making. Auditions are open to absolutely anyone and require no previous experience or preparation. Executive producer Jon Bromwich said: “BYMT is different from most youth training companies because it aims to put young people at the very heart of the creative process, giving them the opportunity to devise, create and perform new work. “It energises the mind, challenges young people’s creativity and brings their own vision to each project. Characters that they create and ideas they develop infuse the show with new energy and make their own individual experience unique and invaluable. “Auditions don’t require any previous experience or preparation. We are looking for raw talent, people who are switched on, ready to open their minds to new ideas and learn variable skills. In 2007 we didn’t know why a 15 year old Ed Sheeran was different, but our staff spotted something indefinable which then just grew into what you see now. So all career options are open if you audition for us this year.”

Jasmine appearing in ‘Fight Like A Girl’ Each auditionee is carefully observed and graded by top industry professionals, who will see over 1000 potentials resulting in 300 young people being invited into the BYMT Company 2020. If successful in their audition, company members will work alongside the industry leading directors,

musical directors, and choreographers to build a new musical show from the ground up. BYMT’s exciting programme for 2020 features seven full productions and some of the biggest titles in theatre, music and literature; including cultural classics, chamber opera, freshly devised new works and new commissions.

Dramatic increase in dementia emergency hospital admissions Emergency admissions to hospital for people in Cornwall with dementia have increased by nearly 50 per cent over the past five years. New data published by Alzheimer’s Society reveals the strain on the NHS of people with dementia unnecessarily ending up in hospitals, which the charity blames on the collapsing care system. In Cornwall the number of emergency admissions in 2017/18 was 3,860 - an increase of 47.6 per cent since 2012/13. Across the South West as a whole there were 36,055 emergency admissions in 2017/18, an increase of 42 per cent in just five years.

Across England, the latest statistics show there were 379,000 emergency admissions, up by almost 100,000 over the same period. The number of people with dementia who end up stranded in hospital for up to a year after an emergency admission in England also rose 6% from 2012/13, with 40,000 people with dementia stuck longer than a month in 2017/18. The rising figures mean more than half of all people with a dementia diagnosis in England went through emergency admission to hospital in 2017/18, many multiple times. Alzheimer’s Society also estimates that the total spend for the NHS of the increase in emergency

Mayor’s Message

From Chris Goodman Thank you to the huge numbers of volunteers in our community for their time and effort to ensure the 2019 Christmas celebrations and events took place. Thanks also to the volunteer members of the Torpoint Town Partnership for hosting the Lantern Making Workshop and orchestrating the Lantern Parade at the Christmas Lights Switch on evening. Also, the Torpoint businesses who supported the 2019 Best Dressed Christmas Window Competition, adding that extra magical Christmas sparkle to the Fore Street area. Heartfelt thanks also to the team of volunteers who put up the Christmas tree, arranged the Christmas tree lights and the lights along Fore Street. Many of our community have commented this year on the beauty of the lights, as well as the team of volunteers who managed the road closures. In spite of the strong winds the

admissions of people with dementia in 2017/18 was over £280 million. Additionally, the 40,000 people spending between a month and a year stranded in hospital in 2017/18 cost the NHS over £165m. While the ageing population may be accountable for some of the increase, Alzheimer’s Society blames much of the rise on the scarcity of appropriate care support, and the paucity of care home places able to provide specialist dementia care. Alzheimer’s Society is demanding £8bn per year is allocated in the spring budget, and for crossparty talks to begin immediately so agreement

can be reached for free universal care, funded like schools and the NHS to give people with dementia the dignity, security and fundamental care they deserve. Marion Child, Alzheimer’s Society’s south west head of region, said: “People with dementia are all too often being dumped in hospital and left there for long stays. “Many are only admitted because there’s no social care support to keep them safe at home. They are commonly spending more than twice as long in hospital as needed, confused and scared. This costs the NHS millions of pounds for the want of properly funded social care.”

stage was set up and a variety of community singers and performers entertained everybody. Thanks to all the performers as many of the groups had multiple engagements throughout the Christmas period. What an amazing community effort at St James Church on Christmas Day, I enjoyed meeting and talking with local residents who were taking advantage of the hospitality. Thank you to the kitchen team and the church members for a successful event. Many members of our community like to visit the Horson Cemeteries at Christmas time to pay their respects to family or friends. I regret to report that whilst visiting the new Horson Cemetery, individuals have been horrified to see that some irresponsible dog owners have allowed their dogs to foul around the graves of their loved ones, which is deeply distressing for those individuals. Signs are now displayed at the Cemetery reminding all dog walkers to keep their dogs on a lead in the area. Dog fouling is also on the increase in Fore Street and several businesses have commented their displeasure having found dog excrement on the pavements, I know the majority of dog owners are responsible, however, I encourage us all to be vigilant on this matter. Forthcoming events include the Mayor’s Charity Ball at the Council Chambers on Saturday February 15. Tickets are £30 each and include a three course dinner, with entertainment provided by Broken Men. If you would like to purchase Mayor’s Ball tickets please contact the council offices on 01752 814165 or email adminassistant@torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk Advance notice of the Annual Civic Service - this year it will be on Sunday July 12 at St James Church.

Fishermen’s help sought to reduce marine litter

A novel competition for fishermen is being launched – in the hope of finding a solution to one of the most pervasive forms of marine litter washing up on Cornish beaches.
Some great prizes, including Elka Unlimited fishermen’s smocks and Waterhaul sunglasses, made from recycled fishing net, will be awarded to the best ideas to help prevent the loss of ‘fishermen’s kisses’ – small offcuts of net that are often blown or washed into the sea when nets are being fixed.
The short film ‘Fishermen’s Kisses’, launched by the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition, highlights the extent of this problem, showing a display of 10,000 pieces collected in just a few trips recently to Whitsand Bay.
Claire Wallerstein, of beach cleaning group Rame Peninsula Beach Care, which is part of the CPPC, said: “We know most fishermen care a lot about the marine environment, and many are also already doing an amazing job through schemes like Fishing for Litter, which enables them to bring back large amounts of the plastics and other waste that come up in their nets. This scheme has already seen over 224 tonnes of marine litter brought back ashore for safe disposal since it was launched in the south west in 2008.
“This can make ‘fishermen’s kisses’ – the little pieces cut away when nets are being fixed – seem very small and insignificant. However, over time these small pieces have built up to become one of the commonest items of waste found littering our beaches.” Claire said: “We know that fishermen work really hard, often in difficult and dangerous conditions, and it’s easy to see how these little bits of Example of ‘fishermen’s kisses net can be overlooked when a net needs to be fixed quickly so it can get back fishing again. ”We also know that fishermen are often too busy to get down to the beach, so they don’t necessarily see what we beach cleaners find on the shoreline. Although they often pull up plastic in their nets, this is usually the dense, heavy plastics from the sea bed - while it’s the lighter, floating pieces that are washed ashore in huge amounts. We hope this film will help to ‘bring the beach to the fishermen’, and give a better idea of the impact that these seemingly insignificant bits of net can have.”
The problem is not just that net waste washed up on beaches doesn’t look nice – it can also directly harm marine animals. Researchers on Mullion Island off The Lizard recently found large numbers of rolled-up balls of net offcuts that had been eaten and then regurgitated by gulls in the colony there. Larger pieces can entangle and harm other animals. For example, over 300 of Cornwall’s grey seals have been observed with different types of plastic, often cut-away sections of net, tightly entangled around their necks.

Claire said: “Fishermen know their own boats and the challenges of their job better than anyone else, so we’re hoping they can come up with some really good, workable solutions for ways of stopping so much of this waste ending up where nobody wants it, in the marine environment.”
Fishermen or anybody else interested in entering the competition can watch the video at www. youtube.com/watch?v=kwa5Jyra7Fc
They can enter by sending their designs, or images or videos of what they’re already doing to prevent net mending waste being lost to the sea, to: info@cppccornwall.org.uk Closing date is February 28.

February 2020

@TPChronicle

Be strong in the Lord and His power Oh dear, February again – not my favourite month of the year, in spite of it being my birthday month! When I was confirmed by the Bishop of Crediton in 1951 – what a giveaway! – the Bible text I was given was ‘Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might’ (Ephesians 6 v10). A good text for someone born in February in a snow storm! I have always found these words really inspiring and still do. Living in the Northern Hemisphere at this time of the year does make life more challenging – especially as one gets older. However, what the weather is doing outside pales into insignificance compared to what is going on in our lives – sometimes

careering ‘big time’ seriously out of control. It is in these profound moments when ‘Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might’ can be really helpful and sustaining – words that we can hang onto and be comforted by. Unfortunately life doesn’t just glide along on a pleasant plateau, it has a habit of coming at us in a series of quite dramatic ups and downs, over which we have very little control and which leave us often exhausted and drained. God tells us: ‘Here we have no continuing city – we seek one to come’ (Hebrews 13 v 14) meaning, I believe, that in this life we cannot expect things to be always rosy. But we are promised better if we ‘hang on

in there. ’ We can make small decisions ourselves, such as what to have for supper tonight or where to spend our next holiday, but when faced with a difficult decision, out of the blue, we need help from a more powerful source and that source is available if we will but turn to Him in our distress and ask for help. Anyway the blackbirds are getting their act together, there are primroses and violets flowering in my little chalet garden at Whitsand and our resident robin is waiting to greet us when we go over to check things out. So winter is losing its grip and we can take onboard ‘the hope set before us’ (Hebrews 6 v18). Wishing you a joyous Spring – easy when living in this beautiful part of the country?

Royal Naval Association update

No strings attached to this badminton appeal!

Torpoint Badminton Club are inviting locals to go along to their free badminton sessions. The club play weekly on a Wednesday evening at the Torpoint and Rame Sports Centre. In conjunction with the YMCA who run the centre they are holding free No Strings Badminton sessions on a Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 9pm. No Strings Badminton sessions are an initiative set up by Badminton England to give people a taster

session and hopefully introduce them to the sport of badminton, which it is hoped that they will then continue with. Everyone is welcome to come along and give it a go. Racquets and shuttlecocks are provided along with some basic tuition. The club already has new players coming along who are enjoying the sessions, but would welcome any new participants. For more information call 01752 815340.

A lot has happened since Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Branch’s last bulletin. On October 19, the Branch held its annual Trafalgar Night Dinner at the 200 Club. The guest of honour was the Reverend Andrew Corness, who is the Chaplaincy Team Leader and Church of England Chaplain at HMS Raleigh. Andrew’s after-dinner address focussed on the role of naval chaplains before, during and after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, with particular reference to Vice-Admiral Nelson’s personal faith and belief in God. The speech was very well received and shipmates learned a great deal about an aspect of the battle that is rarely considered. Over 50 shipmates attended the dinner and a thoroughly good time was enjoyed by all. On November 10, Torpoint & Rame RNA took part in the Torpoint Remembrance parade and service, the Branch Standard being expertly paraded by shipmate Chris Davies. It is difficult to calculate the number of people in the parade and congregation but a conservative estimate would put the figure well in excess of 1,000.

A wreath was laid at the newly refurbished war memorial by branch chairman, shipmate Derek Nash. Remembrance Sunday is a significant event in the calendar for the whole of Torpoint and the Branch is proud to be able to take part and to pay tribute to those who paid with their lives to give us the freedom that we enjoy today. To paraphrase the Kohema epitaph, they gave their today for our tomorrow. The annual skittles match took place at Torpoint Bowling Club in November. Due to the number of attendees, it proved necessary for the Branch to ‘second’ a few players to the Bowling Club team. In the end, the RNA won (for the first time ever) but could this have been due to the number of loaned players? After the match, the Bowling Club laid on a sumptuous buffet. The December programme consisted of the annual Christmas raffle, which also included a bring-a-plate buffet and a Silent Santa event. A thoroughly good time was had by all. The Branch AGM will take place on February 28 at Torpoint Comrades’ Club – please come and join us. Yours aye!

First Responder Rob’s demo impresses TORPOINT

Guest speaker Rob White, a Torpoint NHS First Responder, brought along the Raizer lifting chair to demonstrate it to members. We had made a donation towards this very expensive, but vital piece of equipment and Rob demonstrated (with the help of a volunteer) how the chair can very easily lift a patient, weighing up to 23 stones, off the floor and into the chair without any further distress or injury and which helps the work of the parademic. Rob also very kindly gave us tips on what to do if we have a fall and we all found his talk very informative and useful. Several members enjoyed the lunch at the Hannafore Point Hotel in Looe and the Walk for Macmillan, which also included lunch, was enjoyed by 16 members, while raising funds for the charity. We came 4th in the Christmas Tree Festival at St James Church and the craft table at the Library Christmas fair raised £75, which we will donate to the Little Harbour Children’s Charity. Members agreed, after a vote, that the RNLI would be given the funds raised from the Christmas party raffle. Competition results Letter Y: 1, Jean Morgan,

FESTIVE FUN FOR WILCOVE

Although rain stopped play on a proposed treasure hunt, members still enjoyed a delicious lunch with stormy sea views at the Bay in Cawsand and eagerly plan for a Spring return. In November, the craft fair and afternoon tea raised over £300 for group funds and provided visitors with a wide array of hand-crafted gifts in preparation for Christmas. Stallholders commented on the wonderful attendance and friendly atmosphere. We filled a mini bus for a member’s trip to the Cornish Winter Fair at Wadebridge. This was

a revelation for us as we discovered county fair style judging for some stunning farm animals and a huge range of Cornish goodies including gifts, meats, cakes, confectionary and of course gin! In the judging tent we came across the most enormous prize-winning vegetables and dozens of baked goods entries along with some lovely items from local schools. A very unique day out! In the spirit of sharing, we supported the Shekinah Rucksack appeal in November – warm clothes, toiletries and personal grooming items are much needed by the homeless in Plymouth and our contribution will go some way to helping. As usual, our Carol Service at Maryfield Church was a heart-warming and uplifting occasion with some very special entertainment from The Richardson Family. The final outing of the year to Truro and the Christmas Lights at Mousehole was almost a wash-out. Nevertheless, with lashing rain and gusting winds our intrepid group persevered for a lovely afternoon and evening together sharing the warmth and spirit of Christmas time. Cornwall Air Ambulance will kick off the new programme of speakers at 7.30pm on April 21 at Cove Hall, Wilcove.
