Stepping out to support local and national charities Organised walks, runs and bike rides have become a popular way of raising much-needed funds for local and national charities in Plymouth.

St Luke’s Hospice is one local charity which runs well-organised fund-raising events and this year they kick off with the Men’s Day Out on March 28 when hundreds of men will walk the city streets before finishing at Brickfields to watch Plymouth Albion take on Richmond. It’s the ladies turn on July 11 when the popular Midnight Walk starts and finishes at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park Stadium. Hundreds of women of all ages will take part in the five, 10 or 20 mile route in memory of loved ones. Then in the autumn more than 1,000 cyclists will take to the saddle and pedal across Dartmoor in the popular Tour de Moor. It’s all part of a massive effort by St Luke’s Hospice to ensure that it can continue to fund the invaluable work it carries out in the community. Other fund-raisers in Plymouth this year include the Resolution Run on March 1 organised by the Stroke Association and the Race for Life for Cancer Research UK on June 21. Meanwhile tens of thousands of pounds will be raised for charity when runners take to the streets for Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on May 17. And on May 30 Chrone’s & Colitis UK are organising their annual Walk It event in Central Park. It all adds up to a fantastic amount of funds raised by thousands of people of all ages in Plymouth. Meanwhile one local artist has also been doing her bit to raise funds for the victims of Australia’s horrific bush fires. You can read Gemma Carter’s story on page 8 of this edition.

Artist Gemma riding the cre Ocean artist Gemma Carter is making waves, with her striking watercolours that are inspired by her passion for the sea and wildlife conservation. Plymouth-born Gemma, from Peverell, received a special commission from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation charity last year to create a painting which they could use on the ‘thank you’ cards they send to their hundreds of thousands of supporters - and further commissions from the charity are in the pipeline. Her latest work is also making an impact, this time reflecting a conservation crisis on land rather than at sea the devastating bushfires in Australia which are estimated to have killed a billion animals and are threatening some species with extinction. “I was seeing the news and it was just heart-breaking,” said Gemma, who graduated with a degree in fine art from Plymouth College of Art in 2006. “I felt I needed to do something and the best way for me to raise money was to produce an original painting and auction it for charity. I’ve always had this thing about wanting to make a difference, even if it’s small.” The result was a painting of a koala bear and her baby joey: “They are such lovely, gentle creatures, and I do paint a lot about maternal and paternal bonds. I like to capture that love in the eyes, which you can see in the eyes of the mother koala.” The original was auctioned for £130, but the sale of prints has increased the amount raised so far to around £500. Gemma is now working on a second koala painting and plans

a third one after that. All the profits from the sales are shared between Wildlife Victoria’s Bushfire Appeal and the emergency wildlife fund launched by Zoos Victoria. Gemma said: “I’ve always loved animals and I always wanted to be a full-time artist, for as long as I can remember. My gran inspired me a lot when I was young, I went to galleries with her and she took me to meet David Shepherd - I managed to get a signed print from him.” Her artistic ambitions were put on hold for a while after her son was born, and the family moved to Cornwall for six years: “I got a job for the National Trust at Lanhydrock, but I still picked up my paintbrush whenever I could. But it was only

est of a wave after we came back to Plymouth a few years ago that I started to paint much more again. “I love Plymouth and I am definitely inspired by living in the Ocean City, by being by the sea,” added Gemma. “A lot of what I do is also inspired by childhood memories, I’m very nostalgic and probably quite sentimental!” Currently, Gemma paints in her spare time, using those moments when she is not at work or helping at home with her husband Nick and their two young children aged seven and one. She has a fabulous part-time job at Saltram, helping with the events programme and children’s activities and she gets to create the Children’s Trail in the gardens at the National Trust property. When not at Saltram, she can usually be found in her studio at home: “I developed a routine when our daughter was born a year ago - when she napped, I painted! That’s one of the things I love about painting with watercolours, the speed that it dries allows you to make the most of those little snatches of time. I also enjoy the vibrancy of the colours.” Gemma developed a big following on Instagram, with her paintings of whales proving particularly popular: “It has led to lots of commissions from marine biologists. I also received a commission from a young mum, who asked for a painting to reflect her family, so I painted a mother, father and a younger whale. I also painted some stars in it, because they used to sing ‘twinkle, twinkle little star’. I often get requests for paintings that reflect families or couples.” Last year, everything seemed to slip into place for Gemma and she is now spending more and more time as a professional artist: “Lots of amazing things happened in 2019 and the opening of Green Space on Mutley Plain is one of them,” she said. “I was thrilled when it opened, it’s a wonderful place and I know that each time one of my pieces sells there, 40% goes straight back into the community, which is really lovely.” Green Space is a community hub which supports local artists and helps to fund The Greenhouse Project, which has two houses in the city where vulnerable adults and people in recovery can stay within a supportive, family environment. Sixty per cent of sales goes to the artist, and 40% to the Project. Gemma’s paintings are also available at the Kaya Gallery on the Barbican, The Charlestown Gallery in Cornwall, Coast Vibe in Brixham and, soon, The Oyster Shack in Bigbury. Gemma has also done paintings of iconic places and landmarks such as Smeaton’s Tower and Wembury, but says: “From now on, I think, I’ll go down the coastal and conservation route, that’s what speaks to me and it’s what I really enjoy. When I do go off and do something else, I always come back to it.” And she added: “The public response to these painting is just the best thing, it’s amazing. Now that my work is getting out there a bit more, who knows, maybe I will realise that childhood dream of becoming a full-time artist.”

The Plymouth Magazine March 2020

Tanya and I did find time to finally tie the knot, though, which was a very beautiful time – it only took us eight years! A few days off and it was back to the restaurant and time to open the doors again. While planning for our latest wine event with local wine guru Stephen Barrett I came up with this dish, that I would like to share with you lucky people. This particular wine event had a strong Mediterranean slant, so pork sprang to mind, along with thoughts of Catalonian influences, the lovely spices and herbs of the region, fennel, garlic, lemon and thyme. Having spent a brief amount of time in the region, I saw how little they mess with the stunning produce they have, especially the pork: they love to let the produce shine. This is certainly our philosophy in the restaurant. So enough waffling here’s a dish I hope you’ll like, strong enough in flavour for the winter and spring, but I could easily eat this on a warm summer’s evening, and the best thing about it, is you don’t have to be Gordon Ramsey to cook it…Gordon the Gopher could smash this one - happy cooking!

Here’s what you will need...

Feeds four or so….depending on hunger levels! √ 1 kg pork belly, rind removed, but try to leave some fat on, Mr butcher can do this √ 300 ml chicken stock, (you can buy this in most supermarkets, but its much more satisfying to make your own. At its most basic level, a left over Sunday roast chicken carcass, some veg peelings, a few sprigs of thyme, covered with water, boiled for an hour or so, and strained off will do the trick. After you strain it, boil or reduce, as us chefs say, by half, to concentrate the flavour) √ a few sprigs of thyme √ six cloves of garlic, smashed up a little √ a good pinch of fennel seeds √ splash of white wine √ couple of squeezes of lemon √ olive oil, just enough to lightly coat the pork

Here’s what you do...

Start with the belly. Wherever possible seek out a good butcher. You can buy it in the supermarket, but it’s nice to support the local guys, and find out a little about where it came from. Cut the belly into decent size cubes, probably around the size of a plum (but not round!) making sure they’re of even size. Toss the pork in the fennel, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper, and oil.

FOOD MATTERS Get a pan smoking hot and fry the pork until nicely browned on all sides. You can have the garlic and herbs and bits in the pan at the same time. It may get a little smoky but it’ll smell amazing. When browned or caramalised (cheffy talk again, sorry) pour the wine in and let it deglaze the pan (I’m on it today with chef phrases!) this will bring all those flavoursome food bits from the bottom of the pan into the sauce and stop them burning. When most of the wine has reduced, add your chicken stock…the one you made after your Sunday lunch, remember. Again allowing it to bring all those tasty morsels from the pan to get involved. Now turn the heat down, cover the pan and either simmer or place in the oven for an hour or so. I prefer to simmer, but popping in the oven means you can crack on with other exciting tasks, like ironing or cleaning the bathroom! After an hour or so check the pork by giving it a pinch. It should be lovely and giving, but not falling apart like Manchester United. If it’s ready remove from the cooking juices and keep warm. Place the pan onto a fast heat and allow the sauce to reduce down to a light gravy consistency. Season with a few squeezes of fresh lemon and strain over the pork…..ready. But what do I serve with this amazing pork I hear you ask. Well it’s really up to you, depending on the season and weather. A cold day, maybe some lentils, or mash, and veggies. A warmer day, maybe a lovely salad, some flat breads or some cous cous. It’s really not my place to tell you, I wont be there, just go with the mood or occasion. Well, good luck, if you like it pop a snap online, it would be awesome to see some of your efforts on our social media pages, and if you don’t like it, blame Tanya, she wouldn’t stop talking to me while I was doing this!

WHAT’S ON

Talented violinist performs with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra Plymouth Symphony Orchestra perform a programme of Bernstein, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky featuring talented violinist soloist Maria Włoszczowska on March 15 at 5.30pm in the Public Hall, Liskeard and on March 18 at 7.30pm in Plymouth Guildhall. The concert begins with Bernstein’s light-hearted overture

from his comic operetta Candide. The overture was received well from the start and has become a popular curtain-raiser, with its distinctive opening fanfare, which serves as the unifying element of the piece. Maria Włoszczowska joins the orchestra for the popular and passionate Sibelius Violin Concerto. Maria currently lives in London and performs as a soloist and chamber musician worldwide. She is recognised for her versatile musicianship, having won the First Prize and Audience Prize at the XXI Leipzig International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in 2018. The concerto is both dramatic and mysterious – at times showy, virtuosic and exhilarating and at others characterized by broad and thought-provoking melodies. The final work is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5, a piece which has become one of the most popular largescale symphonies ever composed. It was premiered in St Petersburg in 1888 with Tchaikovsky conducting and is a powerful, dark and dramatic work.

Award winning Sounds Musical Theatre Company are the first amateur musical theatre company in Plymouth to present Julian Fellowes’ musical adaptation of Kenneth Grahame‘s classic story The Wind in The Willows. They will be performing at the Devonport Playhouse from March 11 to 14. Written in 1908 this enchanting tale continues to touch people of all ages with its endearing sense of adventure and fun among the idyllic peace and tranquillity of the English countryside. Unlike the novel the action is played on stage by characters portrayed in human form with animal characteristics. Their gentle world is threatened by the likes of the madcap Mr Toad played by Leigh Jarmon, a stalwart company member and the growing antagonism from the wild wooders, the devious foxes, weasels and stoats led by villainous Chief Weasel Malcolm Rowe who are determined to seize Toad Hall from incarcerated Mr Toad. Aptly named musical director Rosemary Fox, directing the company for the first time said: “I’m delighted to work with the musical score, a new challenge for me. Its pace and action are really captured in the catchy upbeat songs which narrate the story. The range of gentle, colourful, catchy, quirky and dark music definitely keeps the action alive’. The show’s main theme, friendship, is perfectly summed up in the rousing A Friend is Still a Friend performed by the stoical Badger, played by David Bailey, a longstanding company member, the cultured Ratty, played by newcomer Darren Beard and the timid, unworldly Mole, played by Luke Redding. All are depicted as perfect friends sharing the beauty and wonder of their world but ready to face the challenges of disruption and show their deluded friend Toad the error of his ways. The Wind in the Willows is noted for its enduring appeal to families and audiences of all ages. So Sounds Musical have expanded their cast with the addition of children, including its own family members Leigh and Debbie Jarman, Lynda and Paul Green, mother and daughter Lindsay and Joella Gowland plus sisters Natasha and Imogen Clarke. Experienced performers Natasha and Imogen Clarke play mother and daughter Mrs Otter and Portia. Sounds Musical are aiming to share this fresh musical adaptation of an English classic to a wide audience, ideal for all community groups and family outings.

TRAVEL MATTERS

More memories of travelling the world with our children Hi! I’m Sarah Baines, creater of @ bigworldlittlelegs on Instagram and now a member of the Peter Goord Travel team. This month I am continuing with my memories of travelling the world with our children. The next highlight of our adventure was a month travelling around Fiji and the outer islands. Pure paradise - just like the brochures! The snorkelling and temperature of the sea were just magical. Again some of the friendliest people we met, shouting ‘Bula’ to you in greeting wherever you go. Many live with barely anything in the local villages along the coasts and inland, but are some of the happiest people you’ll meet. There are some great hotels, smaller boutique hotels or apartment options depending on what you prefer. With daily departures from Port Denarau connecting you to the islands, it’s easy to enjoy many different experiences across the islands of Fiji.

Great start to 2020!

We’ve had an incredible start to 2020 at Peter Goord Travel - thank you for all your fantastic bookings and support. To make it even better we have just been voted Kuoni Holidays Travel Agent of the Year for 2019. Our manager Andrea James, received the award at a star studded event recently.

I also love snow and mountains and have been snowboarding since I was 17. I have explored many resorts in France, Switzerland, Canada, America and even Japan for a day! So, I’m always happy to help advise with ski trips and share my experiences. Austria is next on our list for a snow adventure! Going back to Japan, I spent two weeks there last year, something that’s always been on my bucket list particularly during the ‘Blossom season.’ I highly recommend it as it’s again such an experience with lovely people, culture, and food heaven at times - if you like fish and steak! We loved Nara and the bamboo forests, Kyoto and of course if you are ever going to do Disney, then Japan is the craziest and most amazing of the ones I have visited. The kids loved it, apart from the queues! Top tip: always go for the Fastpass ticket option at whichever Disney you visit, so that maximise your time. We also got to go up to the mountains above Nagano where we skied and snowboarded on lovely powdery snow which was a bonus as we went to find the snow monkeys that swim and keep warm in the hot thermal springs. They were mesmerising and hard to leave - you can just sit and watch them play Adorable Snow Monkey in Japan and swim for hours. The bullet train is also everything you imagine, super clean, fast and efficient, never late! One to tick off your list. Tokyo and the surrounding districts are just vast but the trains, once you figure them out, are the quickest and cheapest way to travel between areas if not with a guide. Another highlight has been Sri Lanka. It’s a fragrant, warm and super friendly experience, with some of the best food we experienced anywhere on our travels. It’s very good value for money and a really truly beautiful country to explore and experience. We had a driver for the majority of our travelling again which is great if you don’t have a guide. They have so much local knowledge and experience that they are very happy to share with you. The wildlife was some of the best I’ve ever seen, so many types of monkeys, most very friendly and cheeky! The wild elephants on the east coast just Orangutan in Sumatra blew me away, freely wandering by the side of a paddy field as we drove by next to the crocodile infested river, with birds and sea life galore as well. We were unlucky to miss the main whale watching season but met others who’d been further up the

In the meantime here are a few of my favourite travel quotes to inspire you…. ‘Travel - the only thing you buy that makes you richer’ ‘Travel. Because money returns. east coast and seen several types, even snorkelling with the mythical whale shark as well. There are many types of accommodation available from treehouses or boutique small hotels to luxury five star hotels and resorts. We loved our treehouse experience with tree frogs sharing our bathroom and fireflies sharing our bedroom, as well as the noises at night of other wildlife nearby - a truly magical experience not to be missed, even if you don’t get much sleep! Other highlights of our journey included Singapore’s futuristic metropolis, Sumatra’s rainforest with the unforgettable orangutans that made us cry (they were so beautiful) and Cambodia with the phenomenal Angkor Wat it’s spectacular at sunrise and some less incredible food (my daughter ate a tarantula leg!) I could write for hours. I have so much to share, so please feel free to contact me or make an appointment to come and

GARDENING MATTERS

Now that spring is well under way and winter has passed, we are getting a lot of visits from customers who have new gardens, concrete courtyards or gardens with no features, essentially blank canvases. Many people get overwhelmed with what to do with their gardens when they are starting from scratch, deciding what to do with it can be daunting and gardens take a long time to mature. A lot of people want instant impact in their garden and a sense of maturity that small, young plants won’t be able to provide, so to provide this we have a beautiful selection of mature specimen plants, architectural plants, topiary and screening plants from Italy that we have hand selected. In recent years more and more people have been coming to us looking for plants to use in creating hedges to replace their fencing which has been getting consistently damaged in winter storms. Fence panels are expensive to replace every year, but a well established hedge will take storm damage with no problems and last for years. They also make great habitats for birds to nest in, and this in turn will reduce the number of pests in the garden that can damage your plants. We have carefully selected our range of hedging plants based on ease of care, speed of growth, good disease resistance and attractiveness. The plants we have chosen are big enough to create a decent looking hedge immediately that will fill out and mature quickly within a season or two, but not so big that they will struggle to establish and take a lot of looking after. Creating a hedge with small, young plants is certainly cheaper, but it can take between five and 10 years to establish. Using mature plants creates an instant hedge, but is expensive and will require a lot of watering, feeding and maintenance to establish. By using semi-mature plants you get the best of both: they are more cost effective, easier to establish, require less looking after and will grow and mature relatively quickly. The varieties available include three types of Photinia -

Photonia Red Robin

Carre Rouge, which is a hybrid between the traditional Red Robin and Compacta which is a small, bushier growing variety. Photinia Carre Rouge has the best qualities of both parents. Like Euonymus Benkomasaki Red Robin, it is quick growing with beautiful bright red foliage in the spring, and like Compacta it has small foliage and its denser and bushier, creating a strong growing, thick shrub. Carre Rouge also has its own attributes that separates it from its parents, making it a good quality plant in its own right. Unlike Red Robin which only gets its flush of red foliage in the spring, Carre Rouge gets a flush of red growth twice a year and after every prune, the tips of the shrub always remain red as well. We have also got in a new and really interesting variety of Euonymus called Benkomasaki. It is a Japanese variety that has evergreen, dark, glossy foliage that grows in tight, upright columns. It makes a compact hedge that will require very little pruning. We have a great range of lollipop topiaries in stock in various sizes and across a range of different species. These include Photinia, Ligustrum, Euonymus, Olive, Wisteria and Callistemon. These are great for growing in pots and framing your front door, they are also great for adding height and structure to smaller spaces. For those who want to recreate those sunny Mediterranean holiday memories in their own garden, we have a range of pencil conifers that are widely grown throughout the Mediterranean region, particularly Italy. The variety we have is Cupressus sempervirens Totem, commonly known as Italian Cypress. Another exotic looking plant we have is Trachycarpus fortunei, the Windmill palm. This is an extremely hardy palm tree, and will survive temperatures down to -17C. Give it pride of place in the garden or a large pot, plenty of water

The plant of the month for March has got to be the Azalea. These beautiful shrubs come from countries like China and Japan. They are woodland shrubs, so prefer shady spots and ericaceous soil. They flower in spring until early summer and have beautiful trumpet shaped flowers in clusters that completely smother the entire plant. They end up looking like clouds of colour. They are available in a wide range of colours, from pink, red, orange, purple and white, and tend to stay reasonably compact with a height and spread of approximately 1m (3’). They will grow happily in beds and borders, but also grow very happily in pots as long as they don’t dry out. Give them the ericaceous soil they love and feed them ericaceous food about once a month from spring until autumn and these low maintenance shrubs will reward you with a bounty of colour. Our showroom has half a million pounds worth of kitchens, an investment that gives customers confidence. 4: Is the company a member of the Trading Standards approved ‘Buy with Confidence’ scheme? This is the most important question. Companies can only be part of this scheme if they meet strict customer service standards, are qualified, experienced and fully insured. They are vetted regularly. Top brands will only commit to partner with companies they trust because their reputation is at stake. It is not a good sign If a kitchen company has no such partnerships. We are a Neff 5-star partner and have won the Studio Partner Award and Best Showroom Experience Award with Häfele. 6: Is there price transparency? To avoid nasty shocks during the project, you should know at the outset what the final cost will be and be given a run-down of all the expenditure. This includes everything - the kitchen, the fitting and all the associated work. Reputable companies will do this. If a company quotes you only for the kitchen, you will have no idea what the final cost will be, and it could spiral out of control. Nathan is leading a move to establish a national regulatory body for the industry and is talking to other companies and organisations such as Trading Standards to get the idea off the ground: “Having a set of recognised standards will help the consumer and it will also help the industry, because it will spell the end of those firms that are letting the industry down.”

Silver Separators And The Family Fortune At a time when the number of divorces each year has reached the lowest level for nearly 50 years, according to the Office for National Statistics, it is Teresa Cussen perhaps no surprise that the number of those cohabiting has increased. Statistics show that 88% of couples now cohabit before marriage.

People in this age group are likely to have property, savings and pensions, as well as children and grandchildren. They may have provided some Melanie Cotterill financial support to their children to buy property. How can you make sure that proper provision is made for your new partner as well as for your children and grandchildren?

Another area which has seen an increase in recent years, is separation and divorce amongst the over 50s, the so- called silver separators. With increased life expectancy, many more couples are now divorcing in their 50s or 60s, when they may easily have another 30 or more years ahead of them. It is perhaps no coincidence that there has at the same time, been an increase in contested probate cases amongst the families of those who have remarried or lived with a new partner later in life.

At Roper James, our experienced family team can help, not only with the divorce and financial settlement, but also with protecting those assets in any future relationship. Our expert wills and probate team can also provide professional advice about drawing up wills or setting up a trust to make sure that any assets are protected in any future relationship. We would always recommend taking expert professional advice about drawing up wills to make sure that assets are distributed

fairly on death, together with a cohabitation and pre or post nuptial agreement to set out what should happen in the event of that relationship breaking down. In a second marriage it is possible to ringfence the assets which you bring into it, to ensure that your children receive their rightful inheritance. If you are not married, then you may want to consider how to provide for your new partner. Whether you are about to start living with a partner for the first time or entering into a new relationship after a long marriage, if you would like to discuss how we can help you make proper provision for all involved and minimise the risk of acrimony and upset in the future, please contact Teresa Cussen at Roper James today by email teresacussen@roperjames.co.uk or telephone 01752 546448 or contact Melanie Cotterill for a free initial consultation to plan for your will on 01752 546448 or email melaniecotterill@roperjames.co.uk.

Atyla was built by hand in Spain in the 1980s and is based on a 19th century schooner, meaning she looks like a real pirate ship. She’ll be moored in Sutton Harbour during Pirates Weekend Plymouth, which takes place on May 9 and 10. Starting from Atyla’s home in Bilbao, Spain on May 4, adventurous sailors will spend four days sailing across the Atlantic Ocean before arriving in Plymouth on Friday May 8. Shipmates can then stay on board the ship for the duration of Pirates Weekend, which will see thousands of visitors heading to Plymouth’s historic waterfront for a swashbuckling day out. This year, the annual family-friendly event is part of the Mayflower Ocean Festival, an extra special week of water-based activity including a shanty festival and the OSTAR and TWOSTAR races, as part of the Mayflower 400 commemorations. Pirates Weekend Plymouth involves a fun-filled programme of children’s activities, street entertainers and live music, with the tall ships moored in the harbour one of the most popular attractions. Aspiring adventurers who choose to sail on the Atyla and become part of this popular weekend event can either join the ship as a participant - which means helping out with duties on board - or as a passenger for a more relaxing trip. There is also the option to sail the return journey from Plymouth to Bilbao after Pirates Weekend, setting sail on May 10 and disembarking in Spain on May 15. Sailing as a participant costs €590, while sailing as a passenger costs €960 each way. The cost includes accommodation on board, three meals a day and an official Atyla t-shirt. There is a 10 per cent discount for doing both trips using the code ‘2PIRATETRIPS’.
