Children keeping fit and getting fed this summer in Plymouth

Fit and Fed, the great holiday activity and food programme, is running in Plymouth this summer holiday to support families with children who receive free school meals.

Organisations across the city are supporting the programme, giving children the chance to take up activities at Plymouth Albion RFC, Plymouth Raiders and the Life Centre, to name a few. Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Fit and Fed provides a safe and fun environment for children to experience a wide range of amazing activities including arts and crafts, sports and dance. Every child also receives a healthy nutritional meal or packed lunch each day. “We are pleased to be able to provide the programme thanks to funding secured by the Council from the Department for Education. We were one of just 11 national projects awarded a grant to coordinate free holiday activities and healthy food for disadvantaged children this summer and the only successful bid in the South West.” There are over 45 free clubs taking place across the city, however spaces have already started booking up. The following clubs still have spaces available; check eligibility and book now at www. plymouth.gov.uk/fitandfed • Brickfields Sports Centre (8-11 year olds) • City College (8-16 year olds) • Efford Youth Centre (10-18 year olds) • Talk Tastic, Eggbuckland School (11-18 year olds) PM session • Estover Youth Centre (11-19 year olds) • Exim Dance, Plymouth Creative School of Arts • Proactive Sports Coaching, Plymouth Creative School of Arts PM (9-14 year olds) • Plymouth Raiders 83 Foundation, Marjon Sport and Health Centre (8-11 year olds) • Marine Academy Plymouth (6-10 years old) • High 5 Sports, Lipson Cooperative Academy (8-12 year olds) • Honicknowle Youth Centre (10-19 year olds) • Hamoaze House (12-16 year olds) • Plympton Library (8-12 year olds) • Plymstock Library (7-11 year olds) • Sports Development Unit, Tor Bridge High (8-12 year olds) • District Sports, Plaistow Infants and Nursery School (5-8 year olds) • Plymouth Albion RFC (15-18 year olds) • Youth Services Outreach programme (meeting at the Life Centre) (11-18 year olds)

The exhibition will run from July 27 to September 15 and will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. All the activities are free, although donations are always welcome. The fun begins at 12.30pm and refreshments will be available from the Visitor Centre. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Captain Andy Price congratulates the apprentices on their efforts. Inset: one of the apprentices and a pupil test out the new equipment

Top effort by apprentices A Plymouth primary school’s playground has been transformed by the work of apprentices from Devonport Naval Base.

Keyham Barton Catholic Primary School was chosen as a community project for the Phase 1 DE&S Advanced Management Engineer apprentices. Working with headteacher Shelley England they turned what was a concrete area into a brightly coloured and exciting playground. The apprentices were split into two groups, each with a project manager and deputy. They were encouraged to come up with their own ideas for the project and presented them to Shelley for consideration. Initially, Shelley didn’t have a budget so the groups had to know about the budget options – low, medium or no expense spared! Once Shelley decided which option she liked, she applied for a grant with the North Yard Trust. “What the apprentices have provided for us at Keyham Barton is a beautiful space to support our community’s emotional wellbeing; it is well documented that being outside and in nature can help, and as a school, we ensure that as much

learning as possible takes place outside of the classroom. “However, as an inner-city school, we are challenged with a distinct lack of access to quiet, green spaces as well as appropriate playground space. We had been toying with vertical planting as an efficient way to bring nature into our playground, but sourcing people to install it as well as finance it meant we were unable to move forward. Thanks to the expertise and creativity of these young engineers, and a generous grant from The North Yard Trust, our school now has a place where children can learn and play, as well as ‘be’. “The excitement and joy our children showed when it first opened was incredible, and they are all looking forward to seeing how their plants grow as well as enjoying a space that connects with their senses. I have been thoroughly impressed with the professionalism and commitment from the engineers and we are grateful to the Royal Navy and North Yard Trust for making this happen.” There to officially open the new play area in the school was Captain Andy Price, the new Captain of the Base. “This collaborative project, led by

Community radio station launched in Weston Mill A brand-new community web based radio station - Ferndale Community Radio - has been launched in Weston Mill.

Based at the Ferndale Community Hub, the station is run by volunteers and funded by Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group - and they are looking for more help. The schedule for the station can be seen by going to www.ferndaleplymouth.org and selecting the ‘Radio’ tab. Local residents can also listen to the station by selecting

the ‘Listen to the radio’ app on the homepage. Currently the station is broadcasting live on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 6pm to 9pm. Ferndale Community Radio are looking for volunteers to help them run the station. Anyone over the age of 16 who would like to have a go should contact the station. All training will be provided. Also, the station will be running classes during the school summer holiday where a limited number of 11 to

the Devonport apprentices, has clearly required innovation, enthusiasm, teamwork and some hard graft. The imaginative, wonderfully colourful endproduct is a testament to this and is another great example of the local community working together to make a difference. Everyone should be justly proud of their input.” The apprentices carried out several jobs to spruce up the school’s play area. Firstly they helped lay an Astro-turf surface to create green space for playing and learning. They also created a living wall consisting of fabric pocket holders for each year group or child to grow their own plants. In addition they set up tractor tyres to create a seating area, made a sand pit and a colourful interactive glockenspiel type instrument made from waste pipes. The final piece to the transformation was a wall mural to disguise a large metal container, which was run as a school competition and won by Year 2 students. The apprentices were also responsible for all aspects of the project: design, ordering, construction, financial control and Health & Safety.

Ferndale Radio presenters Sandra Radovanovic and Steve Medlin

16-year-olds can learn the different aspects of running and working at a radio station. Details of the classes are available

on the station’s website www. ferndale-plymouth.org and also on the Facebook page. Alternatively contact 01752 312428.

New parking restrictions threaten future of award-winning children’s theatre in Devonport Park... New all-day parking restrictions around Devonport Park could threaten the future of the hugely-successful Soapbox Children’s Theatre, according to its director Iain Slade.

Plymouth City Council has already introduced an order restricting parking in Milne Place to permit holders only between 9am and 6pm - and also plans to impose a similar order in Exmouth Road. Director Iain Slade has written an open letter to Council Leader Tudor Evans appealing for the restrictions to be amended - without which he fears the award-winning theatre has an uncertain future. A ‘Save Our Soapbox’ petition opposed to the restrictions has attracted more than 1,000 supporters and the team behind the Soapbox are determined to fight on. In his letter Iain said: “We believe (the restrictions) are aimed largely at dissuading problematic commuter traffic from the dockyard parking in the area. “Unfortunately, since the first restriction in Milne Place was put in place, commuter parking has simply moved into the adjacent streets exacerbating the situation. “As a result, The Soapbox has seen a substantial decline in weekday ticket sales for its baby and toddler shows. “Many parents we have spoken with, although extremely positive about the service we provide, have complained about the difficulty they face with parking when

visiting the theatre. “We believe that if Plymouth City Council were to impose further allday parking restrictions in the nearby streets, it would render the theatre and park inaccessible to many and threatens the future viability of the theatre.” He said that the theatre’s core audience visit during weekdays between 10.30am and 3pm and spend approximately two hours at the theatre, cafe and park. He added: “Just over 30% travel from outside of Plymouth, from as far away as Exeter and St Austell. All have babies or small children and a fair proportion are pregnant and are unable to walk far with small children in tow. “We have implemented a travel plan to encourage users to walk, cycle or use public transport, but for some families this is just not possible due to distances, lack of infrastructure, mobility issues or circumstance. “It’s crystal clear that these parking restrictions will put families off visiting the park, theatre and cafe. As an independent community business, we depend on ticket sales to support the work we do within our local area and for our continued existence as an organisation.” The Soapbox is the only theatre in the South West Peninsula specialising in creating professional new theatre for children aged six months to 15 years. With funding from Plymouth City Council’s City Change fund, sponsorship by local companies such as CityBus and the Co-op and three

Plymouth’s Central Park has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag.

Hardly a car in sight. This photo was taken recently in the middle of the day in Milne Place. Parking restrictions mean that only residents with permits can park here between 9am and 6pm - which has caused a parking headache for families wanting to attend The Soapbox Children’s Theatre during the day crowdfunding campaigns, the rundown building has been given a new lease of life. The directors are looking to raise a further £350,000 for the next phase of development, which will see the creation of an outdoor learning space, rooftop stage, a two hundred seat amphitheatre and increased employment and graduate opportunities. Iain added: “Our vision is to create a nationally recognised centre of excellence for children‚‘s theatre and culture. We are proud of the transformation we have achieved in re-purposing an unloved building, which, as you may know, was originally a semi-derelict WWII mustard gas decontamination unit and former scabies clinic.

“This historical building has become something hopeful and remarkable for the children of our city.” One local councillor, Kate Taylor, has already pledged her support for the campaign, but so far Soapbox have had no response from Tudor Evans. A period of consultation over the planned restrictions ended in July and the Highways Department are currently preparing a report for the city council based on the responses. Iain added: “We want to reassure local residents that we are not looking for the restrictions to be totally removed - just adjusted so that families and children who want to use the Soapbox during the day can park nearby.”

The Green Flag Award scheme is a national body that recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces. Devonport Park, Tothill Park, Ham Woods, West Hoe Park, The Hoe and Freedom Fields have previously been bestowed with the honour and have again retained the Green Flag status. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Street Scene and the Environment, said: “Central Park is Plymouth’s premier green space so it is fitting that it has Britain’s premier award. “Central Park has got a very exciting future. With a new café, sports hub and tennis courts nearing completion, Green Flag status is yet another string to the bow. “I’d like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers, not just at Central Park, but at our other Green Flag green spaces, without whose commitment and hardwork this would not have been possible.” International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.” “Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.” The Green Flag scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards and creates a benchmark of excellence in green spaces.

The new Central Park café is open!

Named the Meadow Café and operated by Council partners FullyCATERed, the brand new, purpose-built eatery is the flagship product of the overall Central Park improvements project The café will promote a healthy menu and will use produce sourced from local suppliers, seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables, organic milk, with no fried food. Surplus funds from the café will be invested back into Central Park and other educational projects so as well as enjoying the food and drink, customers will know they are also supporting great projects. Guests, including friends of the park, volunteers and Councillors sampled the new café for the first

are excited to share our wider ethos of supporting families to access great tasting, affordable food and drink as we do in schools across Plymouth every day through CATERed.” The café will also host a new water refill station, the first to be delivered as part of the council’s pledge to help reduce single use plastic The design of the café is inspired by the rolling hills in the surrounding landscape and uses natural materials to blend into the park. It also has a wildflower roof with 34 different varieties of wildflower, the grass blanket will become a haven for bees and other pollinating insects, whilst adding heating benefits to the café below.

Devonport Park is extremely popular with dog walkers, so popular that during the recent warm and sunny weather Martin and Shelley Stephens of the Park Pavilion café in the heart of the park have introduced their own ice cream for dogs and their owners.

The delicious variety of home-made ice creams, together with cream teas, Sunday roast and carvery, combined with many ongoing attractions in the popular park, has seen huge numbers of visitors and their dogs this summer from across Plymouth. A multi-talented Bandstand Music Festival

was held recently by the Real Friends Social Group which raised £520 for Children’s Hospice South West, while the Woodside Animal Sanctuary raised £600 at their dog show. And the ongoing multi-themed summer events by the Friends of Devonport Park have added to make the beautiful Devonport Park a major Plymouth attraction. Bandstand music and singers, stallholders and dog shows, squirrels, colourful flowers and majestic trees, and now Pavilion Ices, have made Devonport Park a delightful and major attraction this summer for visitors and dogs alike.

Dog fouling in city to be targeted by undercover patrols

Plain clothed environmental enforcement officers will be patrolling in Plymouth from Monday July 29.

Focusing on areas where residents have reported issues, officers will be on the lookout for those who do not pick up after their dogs. Owners who are caught not doing the right thing will be handed a fixed penalty notice for £100, which if not paid, could end with a criminal conviction. Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “I am absolutely fed up of seeing dog poo on our pavements and in our parks. “I am constantly hearing from residents about how it’s a problem in their area and I’m pleased to be introducing a method to catch those responsible. “When we took control of environmental enforcement, we said we’d act on intelligence and patrol in all areas of the city and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” While the patrols will primarily be on the lookout for people who don’t pick up after their dogs, they will also be keeping a close eye on dog control, ensuring that dogs are kept on leads in the required areas. Why plain clothes? Everyone hates dog poo and the council receive a number of complaints each week about it on streets and in parks. Often, when people decide they’re not going to pick up after their dogs, they tend to have a quick look around, check there’s not an enforcement officer around, and then walk on. With plain clothes patrols, the council hope to add a substantial deterrent to these type of offenders. Why does the council bother with dog control? There are various areas, in various green spaces in the city, where there are rules on dog control. Some places, like fenced children’s play areas, prohibit dogs completely. Others just require dogs to be on leads. This is because even the most responsible dog owner can lose sight of their dog when they are off the lead and not notice if they poo. All the places where dogs can’t go, or must be on leads, have clear signs but if in doubt, check the website at www.plymouth.gov.uk/ dogcontrol What about littering, fly-posting and flytipping? Although dog fouling and dog control will be the priority of the plain clothed teams, they will not turn a blind eye when they spot littering, fly-posting or fly-tipping and will issue FPNs. If they’ve not got uniforms, how will people know that an officer is genuine? Officers will carry Plymouth City Council identification and produce that at the start of any conversation with members of the public. Where will they be patrolling? The plain clothes patrols will be in areas where residents have told us that there are particular issues. But this is just the start. If your area has a particular issue with litter or if dog control at a particular children’s play area is getting you down, then get in touch at www.plymouth.gov.uk/dogcontrol.

New plastics code of conduct launched A new code of conduct to help businesses, community organisations and individuals cut down on single use plastics has been launched by partners in Plymouth. The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct was launched jointly by members of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce and Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s City Conversations event. It follows the news last month that Plymouth is the largest UK city to be awarded Plastic Free City status by Surfers Against Sewage. The Code gives lots of handy hints and tips such as encouraging the use of reusable cups, making sure events are

Pictured at the launch Stuart Elford, Jackie Young and Cllr Sue Dann

eco-friendly by using recyclable materials including cups, plates and cutlery, and thinking about packaging when ordering supplies. Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re really pleased to launch the new Code of Conduct jointly with Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. “As a city we’re committed to doing all we can to reduce single use plastics and tackling plastic pollution and to do this we need everyone’s support. So the Code is really about making it as easy as possible for businesses, community organisations and individuals to take part. We can all do our bit for people, Plymouth and the planet.” Stuart Elford, Devon and Plymouth Chamber’s Chief Executive, said: “Devon and Plymouth Chamber is delighted to support The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct and launch the initiative to business leaders at our City Conversations event. Protecting our natural resources is important for everyone and businesses need to play their part. This code will help organisations to do their bit with handy hints and tips. The Chamber will encourage all our members to sign up to the code, which is even more important as Britain’s Ocean City approaches the Mayflower 400 year and bids to be the first National Marine Park.” Jackie Young from Environment Plymouth said: “Taking action on single-use plastics is so easy. Everyone can do it so there’s no excuse. Our Plastic Free Business Pioneers have eliminated everything from coffee cups and straws to packaging. They’ve listened to us and to their clients who are increasingly asking about plastic-free options. It’s great for meeting environmental and CSR targets and, after the initial adjustments, can even prove cost effective. What’s not to like?” Since the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plan for Plastics was launched in June 2018: • 264 schools, community groups, families and individuals have signed up to be Plastic Free Community Ambassadors and 102 local businesses have signed up to be Plastic Free Pioneers as part of the work led by Environment Plymouth. • 100 campaigners have taken part in awareness raising ‘plastic surgery’ workshops • 800 volunteers took part in 160 litter picks with local community group Clean Our Patch, and collected 4,000 bags of litter. • 748 volunteers have taken part in beach cleans with Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers and collected 261 bags of rubbish and 5,000 ‘nurdles’ (small plastic pellets used in a number of products) • CATERed who provide school meals for 67 of Plymouth’s secondary schools have removed 8,000 plastic straws, removed disposable plastic packaging and moved over to biodegradable • A Sea Bin has been installed by Plymouth City Council at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of a pilot project to monitor plastic pollution with the University of Plymouth

Plymouth photographers snap up top award The award for the Best Photography Unit in the Royal Navy has been awarded to a group of photographers from Plymouth.

The Fleet Regional Photographic Unit West, based at Devonport Naval Base won the coveted Peregrine Trophy, which is the highest honour that any Photographic Section can achieve and is awarded annually. Judged by some of the best photographers and agency professionals in the country, the overall winner for the best portfolio went to the Plymouth based Unit for their work over the past 12 months. Two of the main contributors to this outstanding selection were Leading Photographers Alex Ceolin and Barry ‘Baz’ Wheeler. “It’s a very proud moment,” said Chief Petty Officer Matt Ellison, who heads up the Royal Navy Photographers in the region. “Alex and Barry have done really well and its due recognition for all their hard work this year.” Alex Ceolin joined the unit after finishing her Photography training at RAF Cosford in the West Midlands in April 2018. She became a Navy photographer after leaving her role as a communications specialist to

fulfil her dreams and has never looked back. Barry Wheeler transferred from the Royal Marines and after his training he served around the world and covered most of it with a camera by his side. His Commando training has seen him out and about with the Royal Marines, whether at sea or on land poised to take that image! “It’s been a long time since our section has won the Peregrine Trophy and I’m so happy to have contributed to our section’s success,” said Barry. The Peregrine Trophy is awarded to the best Photography section that submits a portfolio of six images, covering military based subjects and can cover operations anywhere worldwide in any environment. The awards ceremony for the Peregrine Trophy is a prestigious occasion and took place in July at Admiralty House on London’s Whitehall. During the ceremony other awards were presented for Best Maritime image, Best Student of the year, Best Amateur among many others. But it’s the Peregrine Trophy that everyone wants to win, which was presented by Chief of Joint Operations (CJO), Vice Admiral Ben Key CBE at the end of the night.

Plymouth to work with Music Venue Trust to develop live music in city Plymouth City Council is working with the Music Venue Trust, a national grassroots music charity, to support and develop live music in Plymouth.

Following consultation with venues, promoters and musicians involved in the local music industry, the council has teamed up with the Music Venue Trust to discuss and identify the problems faced in Plymouth and how to tackle them to support a thriving local music scene. Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: “We listened to the concerns that were raised about the local music scene, and we’re taking action. I’m thrilled to be announcing our partnership with the Music Venue Trust who have worked all across the country. The problem faced by live music venues is not just a local one – so it’s great to be working with an organisation that has expertise and a great track record of reviving grassroots music scenes. “Together we will be working to grow and develop this important aspect of Britain’s Ocean City’s vibrant cultural scene.” The Music Venue Trust will be engaging with music venues across the city to understand the local music scene and identify steps to support the industry. This will be followed by a two week celebration event in September, Fightback Plymouth, which will celebrate the local artists and venues that exist in the city. Mark Davyd, CEO of the Music Venue Trust said: “We are excited to be working with Plymouth City Council and the city’s fantastic range of grassroots music venues. There is a Mark Davyd thriving, organic music scene here which has real potential to be regionally and nationally important. This is an opportunity to work right across that scene to identify the value of what already exists, seek opportunities to support it, and look for opportunities to plug the gaps that might prevent the scene reaching its full potential.” The Music Venue Trust works nationally to protect, secure and improve grassroots music venues. Created in January 2014 the charity has been working at a national level, feeding into Government research about the music industry and working to secure the long-term future of iconic music venues across the UK. As part of this work Music Venue Trust has delivered successful Fightback events in Bristol, Brighton and Manchester.

Volunteers pick litter to raise cash A team from Devon Universities Royal Naval unit, led by Ryan Cumner, has been helping to clean the streets of Plymouth.

The team is aiming to fundraise £2000 before the end of August for SeafarersUK; a charity that supports the UK’s maritime industry. The charity provides safety equipment for merchant seamen and the fishing fleets, as well as grants to help seafaring families in need. As part of the fundraising the team took to the streets in Millbay to clean one of the most polluted areas in Plymouth. With the backing of Clean Our Patch, a community group dedicated to cleaning up Plymouth, led by El and Ash, along with two other volunteers, they collected 24 bags of rubbish in two hours. The items collected ranged from the ordinary – like takeaway boxes – to the bizarre like three chest freezers and a sofa. Those obviously did not fit in the bin bags, but were reported to the council! Verity Thomas, the head of fundraising in the team, said: “Doing the litter pick was very eye-opening and insightful. It highlighted the extend of drug use in Plymouth, as well as the issue of commercial fly-tipping, one-useplastics, and general littering. “I hadn’t realised it was such a problem beforehand and I learnt a lot”. Joe Williams, another team member, was excited to find the oldest piece of rubbish

Volunteers from Devon Universities Royal Navy Unit and Clean Our Patch ready for the litter pick in Millbay

during the pick: a crisp packet dated to 2004, so 15 years old. Collecting large pieces of rubbish was easy using the litter grabbers but Adam Bennett was determined to pick up the smaller items too, like the numerous cigarette butts. Devon URNU are on the final push to get to their total for Seafarers UK. Any donations would be appreciated at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/ DURNU24Peaks. Please mention ‘litter pick’ so that the organisers can track which activities

are raising the most. The team have also taken part in the 24 Peaks challenge, a 31 mile walk in the Lake District taking in 24 mountains each over 2,400ft high. The team are doing many other different events to raise money, including bake sales, a ‘guess how many sweets in the jar competition’ and a raffle. Clean Our Patch run regular local cleans across Plymouth. To get involved or have a look at the amazing work they do visit www. facebook.com/CleanOurPatch

Sailor campaigns for dog walkers in Plymouth to help clean up rubbish A passionate sailor from the Royal Navy based in Devonport, is leading a campaign to encourage dog walkers to help clean up some of Plymouth’s footpaths.

Leading photographer Barry ‘Baz’ Wheeler, 37,of the Fleet Photographic Unit West along with his wife Cathy and their dog Izzy are spearheading an initiative, asking other dog owners to pick up litter on their daily walks. “I’ve noticed over the past three or four years that many of the paths where I go for a walk with Izzy, my dog, are littered with rubbish and plastic,” said Baz. “Many of the hedgerows and bushes are covered with domestic and take-away waste, which is a general blight on the landscape. So, I was thinking if everyone could just pick up a bag full of litter every time they went out, we could all help get rid of this problem.” Baz was so passionate after one particular walk, that he decided to clear up a section of the woodlands he had just walked through. He and Cathy gathered four bin bags full and cleared an area 10 metres either side of the pathway. “There are hundreds of dog walkers and pathways in Plymouth alone, if it was repeated across the country by thousands we can get on top of the problem and the paths and parks would improve, be cleaner and a whole lot more pleasant to walk through.” Inspired by a recent photo assignment to an East Cornwall beach, where he was taking pictures of HMS Richmond’s ship’s company clearing up an area, as part of a national Beach Clean campaign, he knew from then he had to do something that would make a difference. “They cleaned the whole beach, filling many, many bags of rubbish with the plastic they could see, which was then taken away by the local council, it was very inspirational. It was just one beach but their efforts made a great difference to that corner of Cornwall.” Baz set up a Facebook page when he got home called ‘Dog Walker Initiative’, which has encouraged people across the country to put up pictures of their efforts to clean up their dog

Baz and Cathy Wheeler with their dog Izzy

walking trails. People have really come together to act and make their surroundings better, thanks to Baz’s social media posts. He regularly posts pictures of what he finds on his, Cathy and Izzy’s walks. “It’s really taken off now, I’m amazed how everyone has taken to showing what they are

doing to help the environment. Picking up the plastic waste and rubbish in their parts of the country, we feel like we are really achieving things for the environment.” Cathy and Baz are also hoping that the actions of their supporters on social media are setting a trend for others to follow. They believe through the efforts and the improved surroundings, it will also discourage people from dropping litter and keep parks and paths clear. “I’m hoping we are influencing the next generation as well. Getting young people to appreciate their surroundings as well as the disposal of rubbish properly by taking it away or putting it in bins provided by the councils in their areas.”

Teresa with her son Adam

Teresa’s world record headshave challenge Young people wanted for new creative project Plymouth’s Playwriter’s Organisation is launching a new project for creative youngsters aged between 16 and 20.

16-20 will start in September and run for 400 days until November 2020. Organised and run by the Playwriters Organisation the project is free, and is open to all young people aged between 16 and 20 plus who are interested in any or all of the following: creative writing, playwriting, theatrical production, performance and story-telling, film and screen-work. No qualifications are necessary. The commitment is just to do the work on-line and then have it appraised in tutorials weekly. These will be held on Friday mornings or Sunday afternoons, so the project is suitable for all whether working, not working, or in full-time education. During the lifetime of the project the participants will create various pieces of work which will then be published or performed. Mike Ford of the Playwriters Organisation said: “The creative skills and teamwork abilities acquired by the students, as well as the social skills, will be transferable into any workplace or further study they wish to do afterwards.” The Playwriters are collaborating with Roughwood Associates and film-maker Ryan John on the project, and will publish an anthology of the students’ work, staging a production and making a film, all in 2020. Students wishing to participate should apply by either calling into The Playwriters’ Friday morning sessions at the Noah’s Ark pub in Courtney St, any Friday in August, or phone Mike Ford on 01752 786777 with their contact details.

A Plymouth mum is organising a record-breaking headshave to raise money for a charity which gave her son the trip of a lifetime.

Teresa Brookshaw, who lives in Stoke, is appealing for volunteers to help beat the Guinness World Record for the most people having their head shaved at the same time. She wants to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation which grants the wishes of a lifetime for children with serious illnesses. Teresa’s 16-year-old son Adam has an extremely rare disorder called Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) which sadly took the life of his sister Sophie in 2007 when she was just five years old. MMA is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain proteins and fats (lipids) properly. The effects of MMA, which usually appear in early infancy, vary from mild to life-threatening.

There are thought to be less than 20 cases in the UK. Earlier this year, Starlight granted Adam’s wish to watch a WWE Wrestlemania Show in America, paying for him, his mum and elder brother to visit the USA and attend the event in Monterey. “Starlight is a fantastic cause,” said Teresa, ”and it really was the trip of a lifetime for the three of us.” She is organising the Guinness World Record attempt at Plymouth Guildhall on September 8 and is appealing for people to step forward and join the challenge. The current record is 329 and although Teresa has already signed up a good number of volunteers she still needs literally hundreds more. And she is also appealing for people who will do the shaving. Entry is £10 and details can be found by ringing Teresa on 07900882129 or emailing her at tbrookshaw842@gmail.com.

Chance to enjoy fireworks - from the Lynher Barge The British Fireworks Championships on August 14 and 15 are one of the most exciting summer events in Plymouth - and this year there’s the chance to make it a memorable experience by watching this amazing spectacle from the Lynher Barge. Lynher was built by James Goss of Calstock in 1896 and used to transport coal, stone and produce along the Plymouth waterways. Lynher served the waterways trade all her life, at one point she was also requisitioned by the Navy to act as a barrage balloon in the Sound! Her pedigree is such that Lynher is protected as one of the top 200 vessels part of the National Historic Fleet and listed as a unique maritime heritage asset. Saved from destruction by the late Charlie Force, she is now part of a community interest company, the Lynher River Barge CIC. Lynher is the only locally built historic vessel commercially licensed for day sail and venues afloat. Private charters, corporate events, river cruises, team building, away days and seamanship training are all available. Any surplus created is reinvested into community participation on the water such as the delivery of family residential activities under the Making Waves Together programme supported by Sport England and aimed at underprivileged families living in the PL1 and

PL2 postcode areas of Plymouth. As a cargo boat carrying a load of 60 tonnes, Lynher is broad and welcoming, offering a stable platform and plenty of character. The barge has a real therapeutic effect to anyone who comes aboard and helps people to enjoy and reconnect with the natural surrounding of the Plymouth Sound and its Rivers. The impact created by the barge experience helps families to access water based activities at a low cost breaking down socially perceived barriers which generally surrounds water sports. As a smack rigged gaff cutter, Lynher is great fun to sail and to use as a team building platform. The barge lends herself perfectly to corporate away days, mixing the physical team work of pulling sails

and steering with the perfect relax of a picnic lunch at anchor, sunbathing on her broad, flush deck, swimming and taking the tender out for a row. Bringing the crowds to Stoke with the fabulous fun day So, what do you do to a vulnerable retail area to create footfall?

After dipping their toe in the water some four years ago with a resurgence of the Stoke Fun Day, a committed group of enthusiasts succeeded in creating a Fun Day that would be remembered by many. Some of the comments left on the day in feedback forms and online were: ‘Great to see so many people out on the street’ ‘The Block was well and truly Rocked’ ‘I’ve lived in the area for 30 years. I’ve never seen the road closed. It was brilliant’

By Karen Pilkington ‘It’s been a fantastic day’ ‘I’ve been a trader in Stoke Village for 20 years and I feel quite emotional today’ ‘It feels like we were a community’ ‘Lots of people said it has taken them back to their childhood’ ‘Very good atmosphere. Community is crucial for species survival’ The Stoke Village and Blockhouse Park Fun Day 2019 brought a crowd of well over 2,000 visitors and locals onto the street. The sun shone and

the music played. Residents who struggled with getting out and about, rode mobility scooters down the centre of the closed Devonport Road with ease. Community Interest Company Diverse Events worked with local volunteers to ensure the event was safe and family friendly so that everyone who attended could enjoy themselves; and that the inevitable traffic and diversions were as bearable to local people as possible. A parade led by Samba Kernow, followed by the Deputy Mayor Cllr Terri Beer, her Consort and Mace Bearer, kites carried by local school children, a sailing boat, and banners depicting the history of Stoke was directed through the watching crowds by a

The deadline for applications is October 31, so plenty of time to get creative. The Stoke Fun Day proved that the footfall is out there, not just for the city centre, but for all the local shopping areas in Plymouth.

£75 million commitment to city by top law firm Plymouth City Council has secured transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson as key tenants for its headquarters at Millbay.

The company has signed a new lease committing to Ballard House – and to the city and region – until at least 2035. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “What a great day. This is a company that not only works in Plymouth but works for Plymouth and whose staff are a big part of life here. “Womble Bond Dickinson are great ambassadors for this city with highly-skilled professional staff and their support for the city and in particular, the Mayflower 400 commemorations, is inspiring. “This is not just about office space, it is about an international company committing its staff and millions of pounds over the next 16 years to this city.” Craig Moore, partner and head of WBD’s Plymouth office, said: “With an office in Plymouth since 1881, we know that the city and the South West region are a great place to do business. “There is an enormous amount happening here and we are delighted to confirm the extension of our lease of Ballard House for the next 16 years and a refurbishment investment of over £1 million. “It has been a pleasure working with Plymouth City Council, their significant investment in the city and the pro-active nature in which they have been moving things forward made it a really easy decision for us to remain at Ballard House and make a significant investment here. “WBD’s Plymouth office continues to grow from strength to strength, providing clients with a unique offering of national and international experience on their doorstep. Our long term commitment to Plymouth is a reflection of the growth in our clients and the value we bring to them.” “We look forward to growing the business further”. The council occupies four floors of the seven story office block since moving out of the Civic Centre in 2014. Ballard House is now a base for over 700 council staff, but advances in technology means that more and more staff are being encouraged to work flexibly – both at home and in other council buildings – to keep the costs of office space down. Most of the staff are now hot-desking. It means the council also retains control of a key strategic site right on the waterfront at Millbay, an area currently undergoing significant regeneration.

Masterplan for Plymouth railway station unveiled Artist’s impression of the new multi storey car park and the refurbished Intercity Place in the background

Plymouth’s rail commuters are getting the big picture of the city’s exciting plans to create a better welcome for rail passengers.

A masterplan gives a bird’s eye view of what buildings could be going up, what’s coming down and how this vital entrance to Plymouth could look in the future. Key partners in the city are working together to create a whole new feel to this important gateway for people arriving into the city by rail – from Cornwall as well as Devon and beyond. The University of Plymouth recently showcased by way of a public consultation, its exciting ambition to transform the tower above the station into Intercity Place. This will house inter-professional clinical skills and nursing/midwifery facilities as well as additional educational services to support the future health workforce. Subject to planning permission being granted, it will signal the first major work to rejuvenate the station and its surrounds as the anchor investor. An aerial impression of how the railway station development will look

Now commuters can see more detail of what’s in store as the regeneration scheme moves off architects’ drawing boards and into the planning system. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “This is a massive regeneration scheme involving key organisations in Plymouth all committed to creating a real sense of arrival – a wow – when people come here by train. “It’s a hugely complicated scheme with lots of different elements. The university’s vision for the tower means we have an anchor tenant but we now want to know the initial thoughts of those who use the station the most.” The masterplan would become the guiding document for decisions being taken around this location. Plans currently include demolishing the redundant rail incident safety centre (RISC building) on the east side of the station to enable a new multi-storey car park to be built. The existing car park opposite the entrance is also earmarked for demolition and a new hotel and second university building created in its place. The masterplan proposes a new car park, almost

doubling the capacity to 469 spaces, for the site of the RISC building. Station staff accommodation will be modernised and significant new public space created including a direct pedestrian link to North Cross and the city centre. University of Plymouth Vice-Chancellor Professor Judith Petts CBE said; “This forms an important part of the University’s ambitious estate plans which will transform the campus and reimagine university teaching and research spaces for the 21st century. The station scheme is an important part of these plans and will significantly improve this notable city landmark so that it becomes an exciting gateway into Plymouth. “As a new home for allied health professions and nursing/midwifery, this builds on our already strong health credentials by making a significant investment in educating tomorrow’s health professionals for the region and beyond.” GWR Plymouth station manager Sara Rogers said: “There are almost 2.5 million passenger journeys through Plymouth every year, and it is easy to see why the station is regarded as the gateway to the South West. New Intercity Express Trains, providing almost 25 per cent more seats on every train than the ones they have replaced are already in service, and from December this year we will see more frequent and faster journeys. In keeping with improved services, I am delighted rail users will now have the opportunity to see these upgrade plans and the next phase in the station’s development.” The entire scheme is expected to cost in the region of £80m and has already received some financial support. Through the One Public Estate, the Cabinet Office has provided £500,000 for feasibility and planning work. • Plymouth’s train travellers will be walking out of the station onto Brunel Plaza. The multi-million regeneration scheme proposed for the area around the station will be named after Isambard Kingdom Brunelt, he great engineer, who was not only the chief engineer for the Great Western Railway, but also built the iconic Albert Bridge over the Tamar and Plymouth’s Millbay Docks. To read more visit http://plymouthnewsroom. co.uk/masterplan-plymouth-railway-stationunveiled. The consultation on the proposed masterplan closes on July 21.

It was a financial struggle for Kayleigh Sinclair and Shanice Lobb to get to the Games in Napoli but with the help of donations from a Crowd Funding Page they were able to have the opportunity to go and soak up the atmosphere of being at the games. For Kayleigh the games were her biggest competition to date. She went into it with an open mind and was determined to enjoy it. In the 3m springboard preliminary round Kayleigh finished in a very comfortable ninth position out of 25. The semi-final went even better with Kayleigh finishing sixth out of 18. Kayleigh was the only diver in the final to represent Great Britain and to finish in eighth place overall was an overwhelming feeling of emotion, above and beyond her expectation. Shanice successfully came through the platform preliminary round in 16th place out of 22. Unfortunately for Shanice the semi-final did not go to plan, as she ended up in 15th place out of 18 after a disappointing second dive. Earlier this year she won the bronze medal in the same event at the British National Diving Cup. Despite the result it did not tarnish the experience or atmosphere which was absolutely brilliant and she met some amazing people. The highlight of the trip for Shanice was walking out into a stadium full of thousands of supporters. She said: “The feeling I felt and the memory of that night will be something I will always treasure.” Both Kayleigh and Shanice are grateful for all those around them who made it possible for them to reach this goal and continue to support them, including their coach at the Plymouth Life Centre - Alex Rochas, team mates, family and Plymouth Marjon University. Meanwhile Plymouth divers were out in force for the National Skills diving competition recently held at the Plymouth Life Centre. It is the biggest skills competition of its kind and attracted more than 250 divers from 32 clubs.

Most of the young divers who took part in the National Skills competition

Plymouth Co-op donated £300 to help pay for the divers’ kit

Among the other successful young divers was William Heath who won the silver medal in his class – only 1.7 points behind the top spot, while Oscar Westbury claimed the fourth medal position and Dylan Philpott just missed out on a medal in seventh place. Other medal winners were Eva Lang who finished sixth in her group, Evan Walker who won the silver medal in the boys – only 1.7 points away from gold – and Alex Whittaker who medalled in sixth position. Jake Harrison-Bennetton won sixth

medal place in his age group while EllaPoppy Cornish took fourth place in her group, a position matched by Alex Snell in the boys group. Plymouth Diving thanks Plymouth Co-op, who donated a cheque for £300 to the club from the Local Community Fund. It was presented by Mr and Mrs Hendrick to head coach Alex Rochas. The money helped to subsidise the cost of kit required for the competition. All of the young, up and coming divers are either coached by Tonia Couch, Fito Gutierrez, Ashley Hendrick or Ryan Wills.

College apprentices create Mayflower replica Two groups of City College Plymouth apprentices have created scale replicas of The Mayflower and the Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland.

The apprentices, who are employed by local businesses, including Aldermans, Babcock, Pipex px and Princess Yachts, showcased the vessels at a special presentation event held at the college. As part of their training, the college, engineering, welding, fabrication, naval architecture, mechanical and electrical apprentices work together in teams to create scale models out of metal with functioning parts. This year, a group of 30 apprentices collaborated on a replica of The Mayflower

in May, allocating roles and responsibilities (from project management to assembly) and working on the engineering drawings, which formed the basis of the ship’s components.

The model was constructed from stainless steel and the apprentices used a range of techniques and machinery to build the ship, from plasma cutting to sheet metalwork and welding Alongside this, a group of 16 Babcock apprentices worked on a replica of the Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland. This was constructed from aluminium and is a water-tight, working model, fitted with an electrical motor. The Society is well-established and respected amongst the academic community, and has hosted lectures from many of the UK’s leading Egyptologists and Archaeologists, some currently excavating in Egypt. One of the Society’s aims is to offer help towards preservation and conservation of what remains of the Ancient Egyptian civilization. To that end it has made offered donations to the Tell Edfu Excavation, The Griffith Institute and the Oxford Expedition to Egypt. Visitors and guests of all ages are welcome to attend all lectures and study days. Those who have little or no knowledge of Ancient Egypt are welcome, as are those who have studied Egyptology for many years as PADES aims to cater for all levels of knowledge and experience. Anyone interested in knowing more should contact the chairman, Janis Naylor: janis. naylor@aol.co.uk for further information, or pop along to a lecture. Visitors may want to delve deeper into not only the land of Pyramids, Pharaohs, Temples, Tombs and Treasures, but also hear about the everyday life of the Ancient Egyptian family thousands of years ago.

Busy Marines get to relax at families day After a busy year so far, 1 Assault Group Royal Marines – 1 AGRM - took time out to spend time with family and friends at the Unit’s Families Day, at Royal Marines Tamar, their home base in Devonport Dockyard. Among the attractions on show were the full range of amphibious craft available to 1 AGRM as well as elements from the supporting engineering squadron, that keep the Unit going. The day was also special as the families

got the chance to get on the water with some of the Boats and craft used by their loved ones, whilst deployed around the world, supporting 3 Commando Brigade RM. The Commanding Officer, Colonel Chris Haw, welcomed families to the special day and thanked them all for their backing and stability to members of the Unit. “We are a unique Unit within defence and as such are in great demand. Your support is vital to the wellbeing of everyone in 1 AGRM, and I thank you all.”

Meet Scotty - the latest Young Elmer Students at Plymouth’s newest secondary school have joined the Elmer phenomenon sweeping the city by creating their own medical-themed elephant.

Scott Medical and Healthcare College is one of 25 schools in the city to decorate an Elmer which is

now forming part of an education trail at Mount Edgcumbe as part of the wider Elmer’s Big Parade for 11 weeks over the summer. The trail of larger elephants across Plymouth and the education trail are all raising awareness and funds for St Luke’s and the vital service the charity provides, looking after terminally ill patients

Year 9 students Jason and Krystyna with the Elmer they created with their winning designs which reflect Scott College’s medical and healthcare specialism

and supporting their families. At the end of the trail the Young Elmers will be adopted by the schools and community groups involved as a lasting legacy of the project. Scott’s creation - Scotty - was based on designs by two Year 9 students Jason and Krystyna. “We ran a competition in school across all year groups and Jason and Krystyna’s design won,” explained Lana Carlson, health and social care lead. “Using their designs they got to work and chalked and stencilled those on to the elephant. It was a time-consuming task whilst he was painted with acrylic paint. “It took several layers and a long time to dry and extra students helped out along the way. The design was freehand and reflected what Scott College is all about. “We have to say a huge thank you to BLKC Decorators Limited who very kindly made him weatherproof for us for free so he will last a lifetime.”

Piggy Pilates Session for 2, breakfast & piggy cuddles! A Piggy Pilates session for 2 with breakfast and piggy cuddles (Sunday 8 September at 9am). Four runner up prizes of family tickets to Pennywell Farm Everyone knows that Pennywell Farm, near Buckfastleigh is a great day out for all the family. What you may not know that it is also the home of Piggy Pilates . . . it’s true, fitness can be fun! Exercising with animals has become a bit of a thing in recent years with things like Goat Yoga and Alpaca Walking. Piggy Pilates is already proving to be every bit as popular. Combining a stunning Devon countryside location, animals and exercise, the classes are already attracting a lot of interest and with Pennywell miniature pigs joining in, what’s not to love? Pilates teacher, Harriet Parkes leads the Pilates sessions which are followed by a continental breakfast and the promise of piggy cuddles with the Pennywell piglets. Harriet explains, “While there is plenty of fun to be had, Pilates has many benefits including improving posture, movement quality, mobility, flexibility, mental cognition and core strength”.

Pilates was invented by German-born Joseph Pilates who believed that mental and physical health were closely connected. He designed his exercises to make the maximum use of your time by targeting the deep postural muscles of the body, building strength from the inside out and rebalancing your muscles. It is suitable for all ages and abilities and Harry’s classes are designed to be relaxed, nonintimidating and welcoming to all.

To win simply answer the question below:

The advantages of interaction with animals of any kind are widely known and touching animals releases many hormones such as phenyl ethylamine, the magic hormone which has the same pleasurable effect on the brain as chocolate. The pigs are free to roam around the participants as they take their class and with pigs being curious by nature, can get very interesting. Pennywell’s owner Chris Murray says, “Exercise is an important part of life so should never be dull. You can have a real giggle and still have a good workout. Everyone should exercise with a smile on their face and with miniature pigs running around, it’s impossible not to smile.”

Please send your completed entry coupon to Pennywell Farm, Plymouth Chronicle, 28 Old Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth, PL3 4PY by the closing date of 29th August 2019. Why it’s important to be an encourager THE

By Dave Simpson, Station Manager of Cross Rhythms Plymouth

Experience

Encouragement is one of the most valuable, and often most underestimated aspects of human life. We have all at one time or another felt it’s effects and yet it is something which can be hard to give out and to most of us it really does not come naturally. I have no idea why but giving out encouragement and positive affirmation to another person can often feel slightly awkward and is something we can tend to avoid. Yet we will all have positive thoughts and feelings for people, the reasons why they are our friends and why we like spending time with them are two such examples. But what good is it just keeping those things to ourselves? Encouragement can be related to who we are as people but also can relate to things that we do or want to get involved in. In my experience it has often been encouragement that has helped me to step out into opportunities that my own fear, doubt and insecurities may have held me back from. One big example of this is presenting radio shows on Cross Rhythms Plymouth. Anyone who knew me growing up would know that

public speaking, presenting and being on stage was much more of my brothers’ domain and something that I shied away from. Yet I was given the opportunity to be involved in the radio station and to present on air and it was encouraging words from friends and colleagues that helped me to step out of my comfort zone. Encouragement has continued to build my confidence in something that I know wasn’t completely natural to me! As well as knowing what it feels like to receive encouragement we all know, often all too well, what it is like not to receive it and to have self-doubt creep in to our minds about our value and worth. Without Dave Simpson encouragement we can also lose confidence in the things we do and it can become all too easy to give up. An ancient proverb in the bible says that ‘the tongue has the power of life and death’. In other words with the things we say we can either build people up or tear them down.

We live in a society which is quick to tear down and discourage. The media is mostly critical of people in authority and anyone who is in the public eye. A large part of this is vital as it keeps politicians and public figures accountable but how often is it balanced with encouraging comment on those who use their authority effectively and for the common good? It can seem quite rare. This culture of criticism and discouragement can rub off on us and if we’re honest it is often much easier to speak negatively about someone than positively. A close friend of mine recently said something that challenged me deeply about giving out words of encouragement. He told me that he would rarely tell people he loved what he really thought of them and was known in his family for giving out very short birthday and Christmas cards with little more content than signing his name. However when one of his family was diagnosed with a terminal illness he realized every opportunity he had

to tell people he loved them and to encourage them was precious and he didn’t know how many more chances he would get. He told me how he now regularly texts friends and family with an encouraging word and if he thinks it, he tells them. I was very blessed to grow up with two very supportive parents who would often encourage me in who I was as a child and also in terms of things I did and wanted to get involved in. This helped to form in me a positive sense of my own value and identity but I know for many people this wasn’t their experience and for some of you reading this your upbringing may well have been quite the opposite. This need not leave you feeling left out and without hope though as the biggest encourager that any of us can know is the perfect parent for all of us, that is God. No one knows us better than the one who created us and it has been my experience that knowing God’s love and affirmation personally is stronger than anything we can receive from another person.

Two top awards for the Sounds Musical Theatre Company Plymouth’s Sounds Musical Theatre Company have won two awards.

They were chosen by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association as award winners for Company Singing in Sister Act, as well as Outstanding Achievement in Sister Act and Sweeney Todd, two very different, challenging choices of production. Chair Diane Bennallick, speaking on behalf of the company, musical director Marcus Alleyne and producer Amanda Paddison said: “We’re delighted to receive NODA’s valued recognition for the dedication and teamwork in successfully tackling such varied and challenging musical productions. “Amateur musical drama companies are made up of people who have their own careers and professions, freely giving their time to bring entertainment to a wide audience, often unsung heroes when seen in competition with professional companies. These awards are a tribute to all our company’s talent and hard work on and off the stage.” Not content to sit on their laurels Sounds Musical are now rehearsing for their new annual revue ‘Saints and Sinners.’ Musical director Jenny George has chosen an innovative, wide ranging repertoire of music, dance and drama numbers chosen from popular films, stage musicals and plays. The two Saints and Sinners shows are at Devonport Playhouse, Fore Street, Devonport on Saturday October 12 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets range from £ 11 adults, £10 concessions, and £8 Under 18s. Tickets can be booked online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/sounds or by phone 01752343472. Sounds Musical Theatre Company are also proud to announce their next full musical production The Wind in the Willows showing at Devonport Playhouse in March 2020, more details regarding auditions for this exciting new venture will be announced shortly.

Sky’s eye-catching design shortlisted

An up-and-coming artist from Plymouth College of Art has been named as a finalist in a UK-wide art and design competition run by National Express.

Sky Griffiths is up against seven other finalists to win the chance of seeing her work come to life across the side of an iconic 14-metre-long National Express coach which will transport passengers around the country for an entire year. Nineteen-year-old Sky said she was delighted to have been shortlisted in this competition by the UK’s largest coach operator: “I travel by coach to my home city of Bristol all the time so the possibility of seeing my work on one is very exciting.” Artists were given free rein to showcase their individual styles in their entries, which were then whittled down to a final eight. Speaking of her design, Sky said: “I love the combination of ocean blues, greens and Godly Play Club Tuesdays St Budeaux Church Community Hall, The Green, off Crownhill Road. purples and thought this colour scheme would look striking on a National Express coach. I had planned for the entire design to be patterned fish scales, but the design naturally developed into a school of fish. I liked the idea of seeing them travel in the direction of the coach, journeying along with its passengers.” Sky is currently in her second year at Plymouth College of Art and has high hopes of breaking into the world of animation: “I’d say I have a fairly cartoony style. I use strong shapes and lines in my work and would like to focus on designing characters for animations in the future.” Along with the main prize, the artist with the most votes will also receive a free 12-month coach pass, £500, two tickets to Hampshire’s Boomtown Fair in August and a one-to-one development day with an established artist resulting in their work being showcased at the High Vis Festival in Birmingham in September. all held at Raffles Club, Ermington Terrace, Mutley, Plymouth. Keyham Neighbourhood Watch believe strongly in the words quoted by Jo Cox in her maiden speech in Parliament: “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.” Kev Sproston, chair of Keyham Neighbourhood Watch said: “We are trying hard to demonstrate that we are not the stereotypical curtain twitchers and that the Neighbourhood Watch is moving forward to a new era whilst keeping the same core values. “We are keen to bring communities together and celebrate everything in our area, and that starts with some of the great characters and unsung heroes we have living right here in Keyham. It’s our desire to do events like this and make the community a safer, friendlier and generally a more desirable place to live. Part of the day was dedicated to rewarding heroes of Keyham throughout the years. The Neighbourhood Watch posted on their social media asking for local residents to nominate who they thought deserved recognition for their community efforts and were delighted when the nominations started coming in. “There are so many community champions in Keyham, these unsung heroes deserve a chance to shine, and be recognised for their great work,” said Kev. Awards presented included: Shirley and Alan Snell who have been fostering for more than 40 years. Truly outstanding and dedicated people like this are often not recognised but their dedication deserves huge merit. Therefore, this loving couple were the first on the list. Paul Hill and Dene Terry, who set up Keyham Kolts FC enabling children of all ages to play football. Paul and Dene have gone from strength to strength and the club is often praised for its set up. They were the first in Plymouth to have a purely autistic football team. was required for people with these conditions. This group has gone from strength to strength and proven to be a huge help for many. A total of 14 people were awarded certificates by Cllr Bill Stevens and Cllr Kate Taylor at the event, which was attended by more than 120 people. Nigel Cross the social representative from the Neighbourhood Watch and bar manager of the St Johnstone Club said he was ‘overwhelmed with the success of the day and that it’s a dream job to be involved in events like this.’ Other local people who were recognised for their community efforts were: Margaret Finnan - For her work in

developing an old building into the Pelican Centre, also in her retirement she remains active as a director of the Wolseley Trust. Rosanna Eveleigh - A founding member of Clean Our Patch when it first started and has been active in Pluss helping people with disabilities find work. The Cooke Family - Mother Tracy has been an active member of the Scouts helping develop young minds and is also a mum to seven amazing children who themselves have become community champions from raising money for charities to litter picks in the area. Chelsea and Karen Wheeler Mother and daughter who were recognised at the Plymouth Community Awards with daughter

Chelsea winning Young Carer of the Year twice and nominated for Carer of the Year this year with her mother Karen. Karen not only juggles looking after her husband Ron Wheeler, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) but she supports her daughter Chelsea to pursue her dreams of acting and dance. Kelly and Emma Harrison - Two success stories of Hidden Lives, Kelly and Emma have Fibromyalgia a hidden disability meaning the body can be in constant pain, which was coupled with extreme anxiety. Through Hidden Lives and their own hard work and dedication they are becoming super confident and are now Hidden Lives mentors planning to help others in the future by talking about their experience and journey. Roger Hill - Roger has been part of the Keyham community for many years with his DIY shop on Station Road. This family run shop has supported generations of the community. El Clarke - El started Clean our Patch with locals from Keyham last year. Since then Clean Our Patch has travelled around the city with people from all over Plymouth taking part. It has become one of the most influential movements in Plymouth being talked about at the full council several times and El was recently invited to Westminster for her efforts along with her partner Ash. Ron Wheeler - Ron has Motor Neurone Disease and is largely bed bound. One of Keyham’s most influential people, he has led the way on proving that having a disability should not slow you down, this has been proven especially with his artwork. With modern technology he has developed how to do art with just the movement of his eyes, although a slow process the art work he produces is outstanding. Ron has been signed up by an agent and his work is soon to be displayed in London as he is doing shows. His daughter Chelsea collected the award on his behalf from Cllr Taylor. Ron was there on Facetime the whole way and even was part of the photo and gave a short speech of thanks. Nigel Cross said: “Community is about involving everyone, we were not going to let Ron miss this just because he’s stuck at home. I think this is an example of what the Neighbourhood Watch is trying to achieve, we plan to play a big role in making Keyham a bigger and tighter community. We are proud to host events like this and given the public response and support, we will continue to do this for many years to come.”

Exhibition success The Hungry Empire Following the recent two day exhibition by St Budeaux Water Colour Group at the St Budeaux Community Centre, members of the group wish to thank all those who participated in the event especially for the prints donated by an anonymous donor.

Although it was the first exhibition by local water colour artists, the group hope to repeat the event in the future. Residents with a passion for painting with watercolours are invited to join the group which meets weekly at the St Budeaux Community Centre. Funds raised during the exhibition have been donated to charity. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Gloria Tortoishell on 01752 365246.

Britain’s quest for food shaped the modern world - according to author Lizzie Collingham in her book The Hungry Empire.

Her book will be discussed at the Plymouth’s Global Book Club at a free event open to all on Wednesday September 11 between 7pm and 8.30pm in the Babbage Building Room 002 at Plymouth University. Lizzie examines Britain’s relationship with its colonies and empire, through the food eaten by rich and poor, in Britain and around the world. The Hungry Empire tells the story of how the British created a global network of commerce and trade in foodstuffs that moved people and plants from one continent to another.

College students celebrate success Community work, volunteering and overcoming adversity were just some of the many achievements celebrated at City College Plymouth’s recent Student of the Year awards.

The annual ceremony recognises students who have really gone above and beyond making a positive contribution to the college or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve highly in their studies. The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating lecturers as well as local employers who presented five special awards. They all enjoyed a delicious three-course meal prepared by the college’s hospitality and catering students before receiving their certificates and prizes. Ben Manning, deputy principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Year awards ceremony is an important event for the college and a great way to round off our academic year. It provides us with an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, have all achieved fantastic results and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the college are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the city. “It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and tutors.” Award Winners - College Awards Max Lavis, 20, from Stoke Apprentice of the Year Max left school at 16 and with his employer, student accommodation company Tern Quay, he has progressed with his painting and decorating qualifications from a traineeship to an Apprenticeship. He has demonstrated his ability to learn and has quickly gained valuable skills and experience, and is now taking the lead on various projects in his workplace. Max has consistently exceeded his employer’s expectations. Max said: “I’ve worked hard to succeed, and the support I’ve had from both the college and my employer during my Apprenticeship has helped me to push through all of the challenges I’ve faced. My time at City College has taught me perseverance and leadership skills, and I am proud to now be supervising and supporting a new apprentice in my workplace.” Lewis Matti, 21, from St Budeaux Endeavour Award Lewis is a student who has faced numerous personal challenges, but is ready to face whatever life throws at him. Not only is Lewis highly motivated to succeed, but he is described by his lecturers as “an incredibly

kind, thoughtful student” who always goes above and beyond expectations. Lewis said: “I’ve benefited from taking part in a variety of work placements during my Independence and Life Skills course and also been supported to swim for the Special Olympics and to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award. I love the college and with my increased confidence have enjoyed being a student representative, passing information between staff and my fellow students.” Employer sponsored awards Bracken Mitchell, 18, from Stoke Community Engagement Award, sponsored by the Real Ideas Organisation Bracken is a Health and Social Care student who works hard, supports her peers and takes up every opportunity to gain valuable work experience and help others. Whilst this can be expected from someone hoping to start a career in the care industry, Bracken’s nominating lecturer highlighted that she is someone who stands out from the rest for going the extra mile. Jenny Bishop from the Real Ideas Organisation, said: “We chose Bracken as the winner for this year’s Community Engagement Award for her participation in work experience opportunities across a number of community settings during her course, but also her active involvement as one of the college’s Student Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, Bracken regularly delivers tours to potential students and their families, and talks to new and potential students about the

college. I love the fact that Bracken lives for the college brand and is really integrated into the college community.” Tom Smith, 18, from St Budeaux High Achiever of the Year Award, sponsored by Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Tom juggles his full-time course in Sport with a judo career that has suffered numerous knockbacks due to repeated injury, which has put his selection for Great Britain in jeopardy. Helen Hart from the Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce said: “We chose Tom as the winner for this year’s High Achiever of the Year Award due to his positive ‘can do’ attitude and perseverance in order to succeed. We were really impressed that Tom was able to achieve distinction grades, whilst suffering with a learning disability, and competing at such a high level for his judo.” Rebecca Mercer, 44, from Crabtree Student Voice Award, sponsored by Livewell Southwest Rebecca (Bex), is a real ambassador for others. Alongside her Access to Higher Education course, where Bex is working towards becoming a Social Worker, Bex is a support worker and advocate for ‘Not Alone’ which is a support group that she runs for transgender and non-binary people in Plymouth. She has also spoken out on TV about the stigma surrounding mental health on behalf of the college. Ginnie Stiff from Livewell Southwest said: “Bex stood out to us as a peacekeeper, with

an open minded approach. She is influential and inspirational to other students when it comes to matters of equality and diversity, and we can fully appreciate why she has been nominated for a national equality and diversity award. “Livewell Southwest as an organisation is a great advocate for promoting and encouraging equality and diversity, we really wish to applaud Bex. We were delighted to select her for the Student Voice Award.” Hannah Buckingham, 18, from Turnchapel Employability Award, sponsored by RedRok Hannah is a Live Events student who was praised for her high organisation skills, effective communication and turning ideas into reality whilst also managing expectations. She was nominated for the employability award for her highly professional delivery and planning of the college’s recent Hair and Beauty Show, and, Hannah has taken numerous opportunities to increase her employability skills whilst at the college. Hannah said: “From meeting crew members at gigs, to working on the Illuminate light festival at the Royal William Yard and in the Drum Theatre at The Theatre Royal Plymouth, as well as numerous college performances as Stage or Production Manager, there have been so many opportunities for me to gain work experience during my time at City College. “It’s lovely to have been commended for both my professionalism and determination to succeed.”
