Hope 4 Summer initiative brings hope to families in poverty

With an estimated 11,500 children in Plymouth living in poverty, local churches are making a massive difference.

Many children get a hot meal at school during term times and for some of these children it is the only hot meal they get, but what happens when they are on holiday and at home, especially when parents cannot afford to feed their children during the long summer holidays?

After learning about the need within the city, Churches Together in St Budeaux got together and talked about what they could do to help.

Linking with Transforming Plymouth Together, they decided to arrange an event in each of the churches and in the community centre every week during the summer holidays called Hope 4 Summer. This included fun activities, an opportunity to learn and do some crafts and an opportunity for a free meal for the children and families of the St Budeaux community. They also had the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and to learn how to make smoothies, pizzas and salad and veg dips.

With funding provided from Church Urban Fund and Transforming Plymouth Together, volunteers from the Baptist, Methodist, St Budeaux Parish and St Boniface Church worked together in each other’s church to share time and resources and over 550 children and families took part during the summer of 2017.

This summer, Churches Together in St Budeaux are planning to repeat the events of last year.

Funding has been given by the Drake Foundation and volunteers from all the churches are putting on activities each week of the summer holidays that will give children and families the opportunity of fun, learning and a good meal.

From bouncy castles at the Methodist Church to a spy adventure at the Parish Church, all participants are promised a great time. Their objective is to once again feed over 500 children and families.

Based on the experience in St Budeaux, development worker Chris Forster has worked with churches in other areas of the city to create a similar opportunity. So this year, Hope 4 Summer will be extended to the Devonport area with Devonport Baptist, Stoke Methodist, Salvation Army and St Michael’s Church all coming together to put on an activity at the Salvation Army Hall each Monday during August, full of fun, and food.

In the east end of the city, St Judes, Plymouth Christian Centre and Salisbury Road Baptist are also working together to have food and activities at each of the churches during the summer holidays. Chris is also working with other areas of the city to arrange more Hope 4 Summer events this year.

All of these events will be free and open to all in the areas. The team will also be working with CaterED, the school meal provider, that works hard to deliver packed lunches and food to local children during the long summer break.

Wimbledon on the Green returns to Royal William Yard Tennis fans will be able to watch the latest court action unfold on the big screen, as Wimbledon on the Green makes a welcome return to Royal William Yard.

Running from July 2 to 15, Royal William Yard’s lawn will play host to a big screen, deckchairs, Pimms, and a plentiful supply of strawberries and cream – bringing a taste of SW19 to the South West.

Helping to bring the Wimbledon experience to life, themed refreshments will be available, with Yard resident bakery, Column Bakehouse, offering eco-friendly picnic boxes for up to four people.

With a variety of savoury and sweet treats to tempt the taste buds, including ploughman’s, cake bites and strawberries, visitors can dine in the open air on the Yard’s lawn, while watching the tennis. Picnic box prices range from £10 for one, £18 for two, and £30 for four.

For those seeking a quintessential taste of summer, Royal William Yard’s French restaurant, Bistrot Pierre will be providing Pimms and lemonade. Served from inside the bistro, prices range from £3.50 for a glass and £10.95 for a jug.

And Wimbledon would not be complete without strawberries and clotted cream for £3.50, perfectly served with English sparkling Exton Park Brut Reserve at £6.20 a glass, both available from

Chance to own a piece of city history

An unusual opportunity has arisen to own a unique city property. Raglan Gatehouse on Madden Road in Devonport, is on the market with property consultants Stratton Creber Commercial.

The Grade II listed building is situated next to Brickfields and was once the main entrance into Raglan Barracks.

The building comprises of an arched entrance gateway and two formed guards’ houses, one each side of the arch. The property’s exterior design includes single-storey accommodation with a central clock tower.

Designed by Royal Albert Hall architect Captain Fourke, the property is believed to have been built in the mid 1850s at the time of the Crimean War and named after Lord Raglan, one of the conflict’s Allied Commanders.

On passing through the Gateway, the immediate view would have been an enormous parade ground, with army buildings around the perimeter.

The site hosted a number of royal visits - in 1887 the Prince of Wales attended Raglan Barracks for the changing of the colours ceremony for the 2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, and in 1985, the Duke of Cambridge visited to present new

independent wine lounge Le Vignoble.

To celebrate one of Britain’s biggest sporting events, and kicking off the summer in style, there will be a variety of activities also on offer over the Wimbledon weekends. For those wanting to give tennis a try, racquet coaches will be providing free lawn tennis lessons, alongside face painting between 10am and 4pm on July 7, 8, 14 and 15, making it a great day out for all the family.

Royal William Yard is also offering one lucky winner the opportunity to watch the Wimbledon Men’s Final match with a free Column Bakehouse picnic basket - for up to four people - and a drinks voucher. Opening on July 2, those interested in entering simply need to visit the Yard’s Facebook

page – @RoyalWilliamYard - and like and share the competition post to be in with a chance of winning. The winner will be announced on July 9 and will need to be available to redeem the prize on July 15.

Students to ‘wok n roll’ at Ocean City Sounds

A team of students from City College Plymouth will once again be catering for VIP guests at the city’s premier music event - MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds.

City College is the music extravaganza’s corporate hospitality partner and students and staff will be providing street-style food from the wok, barbecue and grill in the exclusive VIP area on The Hoe.

Chloe Lillicrap, 19, was one of the student team catering last year’s music event. She said: “It was great to be involved with something so different and a fantastic end to a fantastic year at

Pollyanna is a five year old pug from St Budeaux, owned by Ruth Stephens and her partner Juan Delgado. She currently weighs 11kg, a hefty 3.5kg heavier than her ideal weight. Ruth says that her partner’s habit of feeding Pollyanna treats and snacks is the main reason for her obesity problem.

She said: “She’s put on weight because we were

giving her lots of rubbish - titbits, cheese and bits of meat like chicken and tuna. Whatever Juan was eating, he would give her some too and this was happening on a daily basis. She’s only a small dog so it soon adds up.

“Pollyanna knows how to give the puppy dog eyes and I think Juan falls for it more than I do. If she sees us cooking, she jumps up at you as if to say ‘Can I have some?’

“Juan’s cut down on giving her treats a lot since the vet told us how overweight she was and the health implications. She’s my baby and I’ve warned him - I don’t want anything to happen to her so we have to change our ways!”

Ruth said Pollyanna struggles with longer walks and always seems out of breath. Flat faced (Brachycephalic) breeds of dogs such as pugs, French bulldogs and bulldogs commonly struggle with breathing problems due to their extreme facial confirmations. They often ‘snort’, pant or snore because of this which many owners think is normal, but is actually a symptom of their narrow airways. Carrying excess weight exacerbates these problems and can lead to severe side effects and a reduced life expentancy.

Ruth added: “I want her to lose weight and I want her breathing to be better. It would break my heart if anything happened to her and I’m determined to slim her down.”

Pollyanna’s six month Pet Fit Club diet and exercise programme will be specially tailored and overseen by vets and nurses at Plymouth PDSA Pet Hospital, located on William Prance Road.

Saltash Chronicles Embroidery Project Saturdays until September A community project inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry bringing together more than 60 local residents to produce an embroidered history of Saltash. The 100 feet long embroidery includes more than 50 scenes from the town’s history. The embroidery can be seen at Saltash Baptist Church on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm What’s That Noise?

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

Party in the Park July 1 Free afternoon of events and activities in Central Park (Peverell Park Road entrance opposite Edgcumbe Park Road) from 12 noon to 6pm. Organised by Hope Baptist Church as part of its Love Peverell campaign. British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Each year, six professional display firework companies are selected by a draw to take part, and despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997. Call for action on nuclear submarines

A campaign calling on the Government to fund a plan to recycle old nuclear submarines has been raised in Parliament at Prime Minister's Question Time.

Plymouth and Devonport MP Luke Pollard highlighted the issue in his first-ever question to the Prime Minister.

The MP’s question followed the launch of a recent cross-party campaign with Conservative and Scottish National Party MPs from Rosyth and Copeland, calling for action on the 13 nuclear submarines currently tied up in Devonport and seven at Rosyth.

The campaign argues that the same principles and funding to clean up the UK's civil nuclear power stations should be used for the Royal Navy nuclear submarines. The Labour MP has pointed out a proper dismantling and recycling programme would create a number of jobs in Devonport dockyard.

Luke Pollard MP said at PMQs: "The Prime Minister will know that every nuclear submarine the Royal Navy has ever had, we still have. Will the Prime Minister agree to meet with the Members for Copeland, Rosyth and me who wrote to her a fortnight ago to discuss how we can extend civil nuclear decommissioning to recycle these old nuclear submarines creating jobs in Plymouth, Scotland and West Cumbria?"

The Prime Minister responded by saying: “We take this issue he has raised of safe storage and disposal of nuclear submarines very seriously. There is capacity for safely storing all remaining Trafalgar class submarines at Devonport following their decommissioning and work has started on dismantling the submarine HMS Swiftsure with over 50 tonnes of radioactive waste removed by end of May. I know he and other Members have written to me, I will respond in due course and ask relevant Minister to meet with him to discuss this further.”

Luke added: "Plymouth cannot have an indefinite responsibility to store these old nuclear submarines.

We need a properly funded plan to recycle these old subs. This issue has been ignored by the government of all colours for over 50 years. When I was elected I said I wanted to find a solution. I've pitched an idea to the Minister to use the principles and funding from civil nuclear clean up. It's a good idea. I will keep campaigning until a plan is in place."

Plymouth Pavilions car park

Plans to build a hotel on land currently used as a car park for Plymouth Pavilions have been submitted to Plymouth City Council.

The proposal includes the six-storey 175-bed hotel - with associated restaurant, bar and leisure facilities - landscaping, car parking along with seven three bedroom town houses and seven ‘extended stay’ apartments for short-term let.

The development plan has been submitted on behalf of Vastint UK, a subsidiary of the Dutch-based parent company which has acquired the site.

Vastint are an international real estate organisation with over 25 years of experience.

It has undertaken numerous projects across Europe, including several in the UK. It has successfully delivered developments for Marriott’s Moxy Hotel brand, which is the one proposed for the Plymouth site - which is at the junction of Bath Street and Millbay Road.

According to the planning application Moxy Hotels are three star, lifestyle establishments offering affordable luxury to guests with a ‘vibrant, young spirit at heart.’

If given the go-ahead it is hoped that the hotel and associated development will be completed in time for the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020.

Plans have been submitted for Central Park’s new Community Sports Hub and tennis courts.

Situated in the heart of the park on the site of current bowling pavilion, the hub will complement the current bowling greens as well as the refurbished sports plateau by adding changing rooms, accessible toilets and storage facilities; opening up the park to a wider range of outdoor sports.

Meanwhile, four new hard-surfaced tennis courts will be created to the east of the hub.

Flood-lit and built to Lawn Tennis Association standard, the courts will combine pay-toplay access with free community events and coaching.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: “I am really pleased to support the plans for the Community Sports Hub and the tennis courts, which will improve the provision for sport across the park.

“Encouraging a wide range of people to visit and enjoy Central Park is at the heart of these plans and these innovative and fresh designs should do exactly that. I hope that in time, they will in time become focal points of the park.”

As part of the plans to create the hub, the existing pavilion will remain in place.

Upgrades will be made to the toilets, dry changing rooms and the kitchen and heating installed so that a wider range of community and sports groups will be able to use the space all year round.

An extension will see additional wetchanging facilities, designed to Football Foundation specifications, join the current dry changing rooms and two further rooms for referees and the ambulant disabled.

This will allow the hub to be used by football, rugby and cricket teams playing on the sports plateau and also accommodate those using the bowls and tennis facilities adjacent to the hub.

A main entrance will be incorporated into the north-facing side of the building to meet a new pathway where a grassed public space, suitable for families and over-spill from events at the hub, will be created. The current bowling greens to the west of the hub will be retained and upgraded.

The new hub has been designed by Erect Architecture and LDA Design. A consultation period will now run until July 10, when a final planning decision will be made.

NHS exhibition

An exhibition ‘Celebrating 70 years of the NHS’ continues until July 8 at Ford Park Cemetery. The exhibition is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.30am and 3.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Refreshments are available in the Visitor Centre cafe.

The next exhibition ‘Plymouth on the Move’ will run from July 28 until September 9, giving an insight into transportation in the city over the years.

Land, sea and air transport will be featured in this exciting exhibition, which is being put together by the volunteers of the Heritage team, who work tirelessly to stage so many interesting exhibitions throughout the year. Same viewing times as the current exhibition.

To coincide with this exhibition a guided walk will take place on Sunday August 5, before which, organisers hope to have some vintage cars on display.

A Summer Fayre will be held on July 14 with stalls in the Visitor Centre, Victorian Chapel, the Northey Rooms and outside- weather permitting. Stalls include plants, bric-a-brac, home made cakes, jewellery and books.

Meanwhile the craft club ladies who meet every Wednesday morning are busy, knitting, sewing and making all sorts of wonderful items to sell on their stall. Refreshments, or for the more adventurous, Prosseco, with strawberries and cream, will be available to purchase from the cafe.

MP opens office in city centre Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, has opened a new city centre office.

One year from the date of the 2017 General Election, the new office has been opened to ‘do politics differently’. Unlike most MPs who have offices in business parks, their own homes or in inaccessible locations, Luke Pollard has chosen to open an office in the most accessible part of Plymouth – in the city centre.

The office has been designed to improve access for people in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport to their representative in Parliament.

The new office is right in the heart of the city centre at 13 Frankfort Gate, Plymouth, PL1 1QA, close to Plymouth City Market as well as important local services like Plymouth Community Homes’ offices and the Plymouth Credit Union.

The office will be open on weekdays and Saturdays and will provide a drop-in service to improve quality of service and increased, round-the-clock access for those who work or are busy during the working week. Since the election, Luke and his team have been working in temporary office locations.

Luke Pollard MP said: “When I was elected I said I wanted to do politics differently and I’m proud to be the first Plymouth MP to have an office in our city centre. As well as marking a fresh start, the office will provide a better access and a flexible service that people in our city need today.”

The shop unit in Frankfort Gate was empty for months. Luke has taken the office on a long lease from landlords, Plymouth Community Homes. All

the work to refit the shop has been undertaken by local firms. Luke will be publishing refit costs in due course once the final bills have come in for the refit work.

Work begins on Central Park events field Work is under way on the latest part of the £9 million Central Park improvements plan.

The events field, located to the south west of the clock tower, between the skate park and the play area, is getting a long-awaited makeover to ensure that it is fit for the future.

Regular visitors to the park will know that the field is used for visiting events like the circus and fair which draw a lot of people into the park. However, the field suffers from poor drainage which means

it often floods, making it inaccessible and unsightly for a large part of the year.

The improvements will provide new and improved drainage facilities and a grass paving surface which allows grass to grow through as well as withstand the weight of heavy vehicles. This will prevent the site from flooding or damage from heavy vehicles and footfall, keeping it usable and presentable all year round.

Mains electricity and water points will also be installed to remove the need for noisy generators or water pipes that

cross main paths.

The newly improved field will enable the council to host more family-friendly events to encourage a wider range of people into the park for health and well-being and to enjoy its natural environment.

The works will be carried out by SWH and is expected to continue into the autumn.

Chris and I decided together this year that we wanted to set an iconic goal where we could raise vital funds for a local charity. It is important to us to be positive role models to our daughter, who is four years old, by showing her the importance of having goals and challenges, being fit and healthy and being charitable and helpful to others.

Chris is a personal trainer with a passion for cycling and I’ve worked in marketing and promotion for over 20 years. Together, we’ve proved a formidable fundraising team.

We chose a challenge that would be epic. Chris is cycling 1000 miles in 10 days, starting on August 20 at John O’Groats in Scotland and ending up, after 10 gruelling days, at his final destination at Lands End on August 30.

Chris is doing this solo and unsupported. It’s been quite a challenge in itself planning and arranging such an enormous feat, for example, Chris can only carry one small bag throughout the 10 day challenge for his essentials.

Chris is currently training daily in order to prepare himself for the epic challenge by cycling approximately 60 miles a day which he has to juggle around work and home life.

We chose to raise funds for Jeremiah’s Journey because their work is centred around helping children and young people who have lost a special person or a parent who has a terminal illness. They believe that no child should face grief alone.

During Chris’ vital training and fundraising, we’ve been arranging local fundraising activities. In June, we worked with St Joseph Primary School, Devonport where headmaster Mr Gill generously allowed us access to the school premises to hold a ‘ Get Active’ fundraising event. 120 pupils of the school challenged Chris throughout the day to collectively cycle 100 miles against Chris on static bikes. The children cycled 156 miles and smashed their target. We even had a special visitor who challenged Chris! Jeremiah Bear made an appearance and completed some miles on the bike too.

We hit our initial fundraising target of £3000 with support from friends, family and local businesses in particularly Gary Treeby, owner of Dusty Bins Skip Hire who generously donated £1000 to help the children and families of Jeremiah’s Journey. Mortimers Jewellers, Classic Builders Ltd and Exeter Finance have all very generously supported. We are delighted with our current fundraising total of £3120, however we would love to smash this total and help Jeremiah to help more young people, when they need it most.

We will be continuing to raise more vital funds up to and during Chris’ magnificent cycle challenge. We’ve found this year exceptionally rewarding and the best is still yet to come! We’re already planning something to compete with this challenge for next year!

Meet the young volunteer challenging perceptions YMCA Feature about autism

More than one in ten of the UK's population have the developmental disorder of autism, yet according to one Plymouth student there is still a lot of stigma and a lack of understanding about the disorder.

Emma Taylor is an 18 year old student at YMCA Plymouth’s Discovery College, studying Health & Social Care. Aside from studying on her course she also spends a considerable amount of her time lending her hand at YMCA’s Disability Trampolining club, soft play sessions and helping out at her local church. Emma also has autism, but says that’s no barrier, despite what people may think.

“There’s still a lot of stigma around autism, many people still don’t know what it is, they just have a

perception of it being negative” says Emma.

Emma has set out to challenge the stereotypes around autism, not only by setting an example, but also through her college study.

“I’m currently doing a research project as part of my Health & Social Care course and I’ve found there is really a lack of understanding about what autism is. Besides this, many people feel it is portrayed as

something negative in the media. But equally, I’ve found people do want to understand Autism better, so that’s what I’m trying to do.”

According to the NHS definition, autism is a spectrum of conditions that ‘affect a person’s social interaction, communication and a person’s interests and behaviour’. These symptoms can include a lack of understanding of other people’s emotions, having difficulty with

language, as well as wanting to keep to a routine.

“I say my mind just works differently to other people, I do get stressed with lots of people. I also get anxiety with new people and can struggle with my communication” says Emma.

Despite the challenges, Emma discovered a passion for volunteering last year when she had a placement at a local nursery and found using her own experience with Autism helped her to relate with other children.

“I saw a young girl who had autism and was quite isolated, other staff had tried to engage with her without much affect. I could relate with how she felt from my own experience so I went to play with her in a way that would help encourage her.

“It really worked and I noticed a big difference in her, she came out of her shell a lot. It made me feel really good to see the difference and that I could use my own experience to help others. Ever since then I decided that’s what I wanted to do for a career.”

Helping others also goes hand in hand with helping yourself says Emma, finding that volunteering has also helped her with some of her own difficulties.

“Through my volunteering at the YMCAs Inclusive trampolining club, I’ve been able to help out more. It was outside of comfort zone and talking to parents made me anxious at first, but it’s really helped me become more confident. I even saw someone I knew from the club in town the other day, and went up to talk to them, something I never would have done previously.”

With so many opportunities in Plymouth Emma thinks more people should get involved with volunteering, no matter what your ability, and that people shouldn’t see autism or disability as a barrier to helping out.

“I would say to anyone just do it, especially people with autism, it will really help improve your confidence and skills. Just look for something and give it ago.”

This year’s Stoke Fun Day will rekindle memories of past Stoke carnivals

Family fun at St Levan Park... ...and reliving carnival in Stoke St Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is hosting their seventh family fun day at St Levan Park, St Levan Road, Ford on Saturday July 14 from 11am to 5pm.

The live musical acts line-up includes Sophie Louise, Kracken, Sounds of Scrap, Friends Uke-nited, MBC Harmony and The Sound Council. Visitors are urged to actively join in with Sounds of Scrap making music from the most unlikely recycled objects. As for the rest of the acts, sit back and enjoy the kaleidoscope of entertainment or sing along.

Many of the participants are local individuals or organisations raising funds and awareness for their charity. In contrast, there will be a return visit by residents from a “galaxy far, far away” so grab those photo opportunities. Be prepared for a few surprises, as final arrangements are still ongoing.

The Scheme formed in November 2007 when a few like-minded dog walkers got together to try to improve the area and develop a community spirit. Over the years, with the addition of more co-ordinators, the volunteers regularly deliver free Newsletters to the 600+ homes falling within the Scheme’s boundaries.

Vacancies currently exist for co-ordinators to cover Balmoral Avenue, Glenmore Avenue, Ryder Road and St Levan Road. From experience, the Neighbourhood Watch team know there is much work to be done on the day well before the start time and would be grateful for any help local residents can provide. There will be plenty to do and see for all ages including live music, family dog show, childrens entertainer, ice cream & burger vans, refreshment vendors, face painting & glitters, static displays, inflatables, charity, craft and produce stalls.

Younger visitors will be treated to 90 minutes of free entertainment by the renowned magician ZigZag, thanks to the fund raising activities of the Co-op Staff in St George’s Terrace. Last year, the inflatable “Last Man Standing” proved so popular it will return this year and will be joined by a large “Jungle Play Area”.

Gables are putting on their popular family dog show starting with “Best Behaved Puppy” which is bound to bring a smile to everyone. The organisers recommend owners start practicing for “Best Trick” and are looking forward to the ingenious outfits created for “Best Fancy Dress” class. Rosettes will be awarded for first to fourth places and the dog show will culminate with a championship class for all first place winners. Back before health and safety was on the agenda, the local community knew how to celebrate. It hosted dance groups, scouts and local businesses on the back of noisy, smoking flatbed lorries, and grumbled them through the winding streets of Stoke Village.

Kids in pushchairs shouted and waved to the smiling faces waving back, albeit getting a lung full of exhaust fumes at the same time – but this was the 1980s!

Nowadays, and with some good reason, the City Council is more reluctant to allow its young citizens to be this close to air pollution, never mind the fumes inhaled when tyres were popped on local Guy Fawkes’ Night Bonfires to spice up the flames.

However, partying out on the street with friends and family is a brilliant way of spending a summer’s day; and local fairs still carry that vibe where young and old can have fun together without sacrificing too much joy.

This year’s Stoke and Blockhouse Fun Day will host a dog show for the family pet (no pedigree certificate needed!); games and the like hosted by Stoke Damerel

Community College and Stiltskin Arts for the young at heart; a great selection of craft stalls, food stalls, and activities to stroll around; information on local history from both the Naval Heritage Centre and the Box on Tour – and a chance to record your own memories of living in Stoke; and perhaps most importantly, not one but two stages for a continuous blast of great live music to suit all tastes (accompanied by a bar, and loads to eat and drink for everyone).

As another nod to the past, there will be a Lord Mayor’s Procession with a bunch of enthusiasts dancing along to the Main Stage (you’re welcome to join them), where they will be treated to a genuine Tea Dance, in memory of that unique spectacle of Dancing on the Hoe right in the middle of War Time.

Plymouth has been very good in the past at enjoying itself, and this year, not only will we have MTV on the Hoe for the younger music fans, but we will have multigenerational entertainment across parks throughout the city.

So, grab the kids, the dog, gran and grandad and a few of your neighbours, and come to St Levans Park on July 14 and the Blockhouse Park on July 21 to see what’s going on.

You’ll be pleased to know that most things will be held undercover (in the unlikely event of rain!)

Devonport Park’s bandstand must be one of Plymouth’s real success stories. The Victorian style structure has been in place for six years and its events attract hundreds to the park on a regular basis.

The concert raised over £750 for CLIC Sargent

June’s concert organised by the Real Friends Social Group and sponsored by the Park Pavilion Cafe raised over £750 for the charity CLIC Sargent, cancer and leukaemia in children and young people.

Choirs, harmony singers, soloists and rock bands all featured in the line up to entertain the crowds. If that wasn’t enough the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust held a dog show and took a stall. For the children there was a bouncy castle from Mr Bounce and also in attendance was the Archery Assault from Plymouth.

Some regular faces at the park performed including the Plymouth Youth Concert Band, Sophie Louise and the One Night Stans.

Oceans of opportunity as local schools widen work horizons with marina visit

Scores of Year 5 school children from four inner city Plymouth primary schools have taken part in a series of inspiring and educational sessions at Mayflower Marina in the lead up to World Ocean Day.

The trip to the award winning marina is part of the innovative ‘Widening Horizons’ programme developed by the ‘Millfields Inspired’ charity, which is based in Stonehouse.

The dynamic Widening Horizons programme, which is now in its tenth year, aims to motivate young people living and learning in Britain’s Ocean City by giving them an experience and taste for the world of work, in order to inform their future career choices.

Josanne Stewart, development manager at Millfields Inspired said: “The trip to Mayflower Marina is one of the highlights of the programme. The children live in Stonehouse, so the sea is their neighbour. This is an opportunity to show them the variety of jobs that can be found in, on and around the water, whilst also delivering some strong messages about looking after our ocean.

“We are so fortunate to have Mayflower Marina, Sonardyne International and Clean Coast Services who really get the children engaged in their activities and in doing so are expanding the children’s knowledge of what jobs might be open to them in the future.”

The sessions for local schools including Plymouth School of Creative Arts, St Andrew’s Primary and St Peter’s C of E School and Pilgrim Primary included a welcome and tour of the marina from Mayflower Marina managing director Charles Bush.

The children also ventured on board a floating classroom, courtesy of sonar specialists Sonardyne, to experience the sonar equipment in operation and get hands on experience with equipment.

Tom Rooney, lead trainer with Sonardyne International said: “It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to showcase how many diverse jobs you can have in connection with working on and near the ocean. We are so lucky to be living in Britain’s Ocean City which has companies with world renowned maritime expertise based here, these are potential employment channels open to young people in the future.”

The educational school trip was rounded off with an enlightening session about how to care for the ocean and coastline from award winning ‘environmental warrior’ Rikkie Carette of Clean Coast Services.

Rikkie, who highlights the problem of plastic pollution by creating one off art sculptures from recycled ocean debris, was a huge hit with the children who were fascinated by the topic and left inspired to create their own recycled artwork.

Charles Bush MD Mayflower Marina said: “The marine sector is a significant employer within Plymouth and the South West and yet, when it comes to career choices, the wide range of opportunities within the sector does not seem to be understood by young people.

“Furthermore, many of the skills utilised within the marine sector are also highly transferable with the automotive and aircraft industries. The Millfield’s Inspired, Widening Horizons project is a terrific way to show local children the career opportunities that exist within their city. We at Mayflower Marina are proud to participate in the project.”

Alison Richardson, hard at work turning memories into banners for the Lord Mayor’s Procession

The Beauty of Memories

Stoke Traders and Residents (STARS) recently received funding to run several memory workshops for people in the area.

We sometimes think of memories as merely nostalgia for a simpler time, leaving a younger generation frustrated as we oldies bang on about the good old days.

However, more and more, we are realising that recalling and recounting the things that make up our lives is good practice, not just for our own brains, keeping them active, but for our selfesteem and sense of value which is so important no matter how old we are.

The four memory workshops run by STARS

meant that stories and pictures of life in Stoke Village and its environs were dug out of attics and shared with others.

Mrs Grey recalled getting married during the war, only to wave goodbye to her husband who had been called up to serve in the Royal Navy the very afternoon of her wedding day. She then had to endure hearing that he was missing in action, before he finally came home safe and well.

We heard memories of living so close to the dockyard during the days when tens of thousands of men poured out of its gates. One memory of the Salvation Army Morice Town congregation remembered having to take her life in her hands dodging the fleets of buses that were parked outside the gates to take people home from work.

Many people still living in Stoke and Keyham all have close connections with working in the Dockyard.

Jean, who is now a resident at Parkwood House Nursing Home, recalled living in the Royal United Services Orphan Home for Girls. The home was set up on Albert Road to help the daughters of servicemen in 1840 – many of whom had lost their fathers in action. Jean remembers happy days there, always playing.

In 1941 the home was taken over by the Navy, initially used for the Canadian Navy and then occupied by the Polish Navy until 1946.

Many people still living in Stoke and Keyham have medals from members of their families who saw active service in both world wars – some who came home, some who didn’t.

We were also told of remarkable community activists who volunteered to run fun days and fairs each year. The Stoke Carnival was one of the big four events of the year – the Lord Mayors Parade, Millbridge Carnival, Millbrook Carnival and Stoke.

Stoke Carnival was originally organised by hairdresser John Rossen, whose former apprentice, Rob Harrison still continues looking after his customers in Stoke Village.

Interestingly the Carnival was restarted by John in the 1970s to ensure that trade continued for the shops outside of the city centre, keeping footfall high – some things don’t change!

The tradition of Carnival was continued by Pat

and John Kinsman who trained as Youth workers for the area – all voluntary – and helped raise funds to bring the Community Centre to the park in 1981, where it stands today.

John remembers that firms only worked Monday to Friday in those days, leaving their Lorries free at weekends for people to pop floats on and parade through the streets. He also remembers making sure the route had only left hand turns and a very good Marshall in place, whose bossiness ensured that there were no accidents or jams as they negotiated the narrow Stoke streets.

Back in those days the Carnival ran for four days with talent shows, It’s a Knockout, marching bands and majorettes, sports day for children, and partying into the evening in the park with a bar and 'discotheque' until 10pm.

Sharing memories like these is not just for the people who remember. It provides an amazing insight into our community for those who are listening. We realise that the social tapestry around us has a living history – full of colour and fun.

We can learn much about how to offer a similar good experience to our own children growing up in Stoke and Keyham, and indeed in the other communities of Plymouth. We can learn about what community engagement is all about, and stand on the shoulders of the giants who were so active in the past.

The procession will have a vintage feel and culminate in a tea dance on the main stage in the park at 12 noon. Hopefully we will re-live a bit of that sunshine and fun we remember from days gone by.

Hope Festival is highlight of Refugee Week

Plymouth Hope’s ninth Annual Hope Festival launched a successful Refugee Week in Plymouth on June 16 at Brickfields Sport Centre.

A great crowd enjoyed the free activities which celebrated refugees’ contributions in the UK and the substantial efforts by both newcomers and the host community in Plymouth to live together in better, more integrated ways.

The event’s main stage hosted musicians from across the South West, as well as those originally coming from Africa and the Middle East. There was also a host of diverse arts and cultural activities, from graffiti art to henna tattoos, hair braiding, face painting and drumming.

There was hot curry and tea and coffee for everyone – handy to warm up with as the

weather decided to blow a gale – although youngsters kept hot on the free inflatable fun courtesy of Mr Bounce.

The main attraction was, as usual, the huge football tournament which hosted over 32 male and female teams, and age groups from under nines to 16 plus.

Football has been at the very heart of the festival, and its organisers, Plymouth Hope FC have been using the universal love of the game to foster community and social cohesion. The goal of the original Festival in 2009 was to find a way to bring people together to celebrate diversity and enjoy each other’s cultures by using football as the main tool alongside music, art, food and children activities.

Founder of Hope, David Feindouno said: “The following year, in 2010, we added another objective, which was to also

celebrate the contribution of refugees in the UK. The great success in these first two years made it an annual event to foster community cohesion and celebrate the contribution of refugees in Plymouth and in the UK. In 2011, joined by many partners, the festival became the official launch of the city Refugee Week.

“Our partners have continued to support us as we have grown the Festival and include Plymouth Trophyman, Plymouth City Council, British Red Cross, Plymouth University, Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon Fire and Rescue, Everyone Active, and the Devon FA. “Hope Festival was in the programme of Refugee Week 2017 National Conference in London and many across the country are replicating the model we have in Plymouth.

This is simply passionate individuals and organisations coming together for the same causes of celebrating our diversity in Plymouth and the great contribution

of people who have found sanctuary in Plymouth.

Refugee Week contained many different events from trips to advice on access to higher education and starting up small businesses for refugees, to showcasing photography, painting and gardening projects. There was also the showing of ‘The Shroud Maker’ at the Barbican Theatre by Palestinian refugee Ahmed Massoud.

David added: “It is incredible how the human spirit can adapt itself to the huge stresses of being forced to leave behind a life entirely and start all over again in a strange environment.

“Plymouth has an amazing array of services that work together in an integrated way to support newcomers to Plymouth including ODILS, START, DCRS and the Red Cross - all of whom play a vital role in helping us all live and work together.”

Brian Pollard shares the art of geography

Brian Pollard - one of the South West's most popular naive painters - visited Stoke Damerel Community College in June to speak to a group of students looking at the part of the course which considers the meanings and representations attached to places.

"As a Geography teacher, this is a tough element of the A-Level specification to teach!" said Steve Campion, Raising Standards Leader Geography KS4 and KS5.

"To ensure my students received the best learning experience I invited Brian Pollard in to discuss his art with the students with a particular focus on how Plymouth is represented through his work.

"We had an amazing afternoon, the conversations was very thought-provoking and the students certainly learnt a lot through a really memorable experience."

Brian, whose paintings of Plymouth landmarks such as Smeaton's Tower and the

Dolphin Pub are immediately recognisable, often runs art sessions in primary schools, but this is the first time he has been asked to come to a Geography lesson at a secondary school.

"I don't think people are always familiar with the way artists work and how they compose a painting and it is very relevant to the way a place is perceived and represented," said Brian, who brought in a number of his original paintings for the students to see.

"I've enjoyed my visit - the students asked me some very interesting and insightful questions."

A level student Amy said it was a "fascinating" afternoon.

"He definitely showed us that a sense of place can be conveyed in a variety of ways not just through demographics and statistics but through art too," she said.

"His work does make you look at familiar things in a different way."

However, despite years working in the construction industry, when circumstances forced a change in direction, local man Mark Pascoe took his hard graft ethos and is using it in the world of oven cleaning.

“I don’t rush the job,” explained Mark, who only charges a flat fee for each visit. “I like to do it properly, and this can take well over two hours, up to four hours if I am cleaning a Range cooker, hood and extractor.

“Ovenclean only work with environmentally friendly products rather than abrasive or caustic cleaners, so, although the cleaning is hard work, I am not subjecting myself or the household to any nasty odours. It also means that the oven can be used straight away, and the whole process is completely safe for pets, or people with breathing conditions.”

The group runs from 10.00 until 11.30am every Friday during term-time in the church lounge. There is a large selection of toys, a craft table and the session concludes with nursery rhymes and action songs.

A charge of £1.50 for one adult and accompanying child/children and £1 for extra adults covers all refreshments and craft materials. We hold occasional Tabletop Sales in the church hall to support the Children’s Hospice Southwest.

On the second Friday of each month we have free meetings and invite MPs, local councillors, local businesses, anyone able to speak on issues that affect older people, to come and talk to us. These meetings are held in the Wolseley Trust Community Building (next to Sheila’s Café in Wolseley Road), behind the Co-op just down from Milehouse traffic lights going towards St Budeaux.

These meetings start 10.30am and end at 1pm, many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car parking is usually available. We also have regular social meetings and would like to advise everyone that these will now be held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth (PL2 2EL) just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single £20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Leading Plymouth researcher made OBE in Queen’s Honours A world-leading researcher and role model for women in science and engineering has been made an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Deborah Greaves, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Plymouth, has been recognised for her significant contributions to research into offshore renewable energy.

That work, and her leadership at a national level, is having a direct impact on the expansion of a sector which will play a key role in the UK’s future energy production.

But she is also at the forefront of inspiring more women and girls to consider a career in engineering, a profession that has traditionally been maledominated.

Professor Greaves’ award reflects her impact in both areas, and her nomination was supported by leading figures from both academia and industry.

She said: “This has come as a huge surprise, and I am of course delighted to receive such personal recognition for my work. However, I am only one friendship and support to anyone who is affected

Former Stonehouse hostel turned into flats as part of empty homes scheme

A former hostel in Plymouth which had been empty for seven years has been converted into 11 rent-to-buy flats as part of Plymouth City Council’s ongoing quest to reduce empty homes in the city.

The Old School House in Millbay – formerly known as The Ship Hostel – is now occupied and had been vacant since 2011.

The flats are the result of a pioneering partnership between the Council, South Devon Rural Housing Association, QSH, and local building contractors Classic Builders.

Representatives from all the organisations and local estate agents Maitlands attended a special ceremony to officially hand over keys to Clare, the first tenant to move into one of the flats.

Under the rent-to-buy scheme, a proportion of the tenant’s rental payments are put towards the deposit they need to secure a mortgage to buy their home (up to a maximum of 10%), whilst those who choose not to purchase during this time can continue renting their homes for a further 15 years.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Cooperative Development, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see the conversion of the former Ship Hostel into 11 flats as part of our long-term commitment to reducing the number of empty homes in Plymouth.

“These are good quality homes and are a fantastic example of what can be achieved with cooperative working, when a range of partners work together in this way to bring long term vacant buildings back into use.

“We have committed £1m of funding to provide a range of initiatives to tackle empty homes and provide more homes for local people as part of our Plan For Homes.”

Steve Prime, chief executive of South Devon Rural Housing, said “We are pleased to be involved with this very innovative way of getting people into home ownership. The scheme allows tenants, not only to build a deposit whist paying rent, but importantly helps then build credit history making getting an all important mortgage more realistic.

“The project is a demonstration of what can be achieved when working in partnership for a common goal.”

Paul Stone, director at Maitlands Estate Agents, said: “This has been a fantastic scheme to be involved in, with so many people struggling to save enough money to get on to the property ladder this is the perfect opportunity for them. Rather than renting and effectively throwing money away this gives buyers an opportunity to be independent, build up a credit history whilst still saving there deposit.

“The response we have had has been fantastic with just the last few apartments remaining, this has been helped by the quality of the building both inside and out.

We would love to see similar schemes to this rolled out across the city” Mark Fielding, director of QSH, said: “QSH is

Carers Week in Plymouth came this year with added music.

Plymouth City Council, and Caring for Carers – a partnership between Improving Lives Plymouth and Age UK - worked together to ensure the estimated 29,000 carers in Plymouth knew that help is available in the city, and part of this was a week of events between June 11 and 17 including music (performed by local musicians who also happen to be carers) and art sessions, supported by local charities Plymouth Music Zone, Colebrook South West Ltd and Improving Lives Plymouth.

In addition, the council has recently joined the Employers for Carers scheme, which will help it and a number of other organisations in the city support carers who work for them.

The scheme will provide practical resources, advice and information designed to help employers look after staff who are juggling work alongside caring for someone.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.

Young carers are children and young people who provide care and support for loved ones. Support available for young carers in Plymouth includes group sessions at Efford Youth Centre every Tuesday evening.

The sessions are free to join but you would need to have been referred by a professional such as your doctor, an educational psychologist, health visitor or your school.

Honesty is the best policy

BY DAVE SIMPSON, STATION MANAGER CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH a world cup for me to talk to them about different managers, transfers and all kinds of others aspects of the beautiful game. However when it comes to more serious matters like how we’re really doing in life the conversation doesn’t flow quite so freely.

When asked, ‘how are you?’ by a close friend I know that quite often I’ll respond with ‘good thanks’ regardless of how I have actually been feeling. I am quite often very genuinely ‘good thanks’ but on those days when that isn’t the case I know that a close friend might be able to help and not opening up and moving the conversation on to football or something else more trivial doesn’t really help anyone.

I’m aware this isn’t an issue just for men but I do know that my wife, my mum and other women in my life are often better at sharing how they are really feeling and helping each other through the hard times.

Sadly statistics in the UK do suggest that there is a gulf in how men and women cope when times get tough.

According to the Office of National Statistics a staggering 76% of all suicides

are committed by men. There will be multiple factors as to why that figure exists but I wouldn’t be surprised if part of it has to do with men not talking honestly about how they’re feeling.

I wonder whether some of this has to do with the phrase ‘man up’.

Unfortunately, in my experience at least, to be a man often means to be strong and unwavering both physically and emotionally. Figures released around mental health week in 2017 suggested that only 1 in 5 men would seek help for anxiety or depression.

It seems that men are prone to putting on a brave face and playing pretend. This may fool those around us but it doesn’t fool ourselves and nor does it fool the one who knows us best.

There is a famous quote in the Bible which says; ‘People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.’ God knows what is really going on inside all of us. There is no use hiding from Him. Not only does He see us as we truly are but He cares about us more than we’ll ever know and wants us to flourish in life.

The first step in that journey, whether you are a man or a woman, is being honest.

If, like me, you are hooked on world cup fever then enjoy it! Make the most of every moment and every match. Then when it comes to the post-match pint, if you know deep down that everything is not ok then please don’t simply ‘man up’ instead open up to those around you who care.

Reformed addict wins top award A Devonport man who turned his life around has been honoured with a top award.

Adam Ballantine - turned his life round

Reformed drug addict Adam Ballantine has been announced as Festival of Learning’s Learning for Health Highly Commended Individual in their 2018 awards for his exceptional achievements in adult learning.

The award celebrates adults who have transformed their own lives and the lives of their families, friends, their communities, and the places they work through learning.

Adam, who is 41, grew up in a travelling family which meant it was a challenge to access regular education. He turned to drugs and alcohol and a life of ‘bad decisions.’

One day, Adam decided to change his fortune and checked himself into rehab. Here, he attended a two-day course in psychology and became convinced that this was his future.

Adam worked hard to achieve his Maths and

English functional skills. He then enrolled on an Access to Social Science course at City College Plymouth which helped him understand his own addictions and gave him the skills to teach others how to deal with their illness.

Alongside his studies, Adam attends treatment centres to share his story and encourage others to turn their lives around. Working with Closereach and Broadreach charities he is determined to make a difference in his own community.

Adam spoke about the impact his learning has had: “My learning has given me the opportunity to grow in confidence and boost my self-esteem. I’ve learned a lot about myself and have used many of the techniques I’ve been taught to help manage my own addiction.

“In a way, I am not just learning to help others but I am also learning to help myself. Speaking to people in the same situation, I am able to use my learning to explain addiction and how they too can break out of the mould if they choose to. My learning

has given direction, motivation and purpose.”

Gemma Hutchings, Access co-ordinator at City College Plymouth said: “Adam is on a very personal journey - he has gone from addict to recovering addict, and now from learner to teacher.

“He truly puts his heart into helping others and is a very positive example of how education can change people’s lives.

Stephen Evans, chief executive at the Learning and Work Institute, said: “Adam’s story is a powerful example of how adult learning can have a transformative impact on health and wellbeing.

Not only has he learned how to better manage his own addiction, Adam is inspiring and supporting others to do the same through his work in the community.

“Festival of Learning is all about inspirational stories of people like Adam that show that anyone can benefit from learning. Lifelong learning is vital for all of us as jobs and society change around us.”

Picnic litter pick Talented Bridey is flying high at Camp America

Volunteers at Stoke Traders and Residents Association (STAR Association) are holding a picnic litter pick on Wednesday July 11.

Children are encouraged to bring their parents and a family picnic. Meet at The Stoke Youth and Community Centre at 4pm for the start of a grand picnic in the park. Those attending will be able to enjoy wonderful company and fabulous panoramic views from this unique vantage point.

After the picnic, the litter pick will focus on The Blockhouse Park although the plan is for some of the volunteers to move on to Masterman Road and Devonport Road. This will provide an excellent opportunity to meet one of the Group’s aims of improving two-way communications with residents and traders.

Additionally, the litter pick will help further enhance the area in readiness for the Summer Fun Day taking place on Saturday July 21 in The Blockhouse Park and Masterman Road.

At the conclusion of the litter pick, everyone is invited to return to The Stoke Youth and Community Centre for a refreshing complimentary cuppa, all thanks to the kind donation of tea bags and coffee by The Co-op at St George’s Terrace. From 5.30pm, attendees can share ideas, learn more about how and why STAR Association began, what has been achieved so far and help to map out what could happen next. Provisional plans for redeveloping The Blockhouse Park will also be on view. The meeting will provide excellent opportunities to raise issues.

Attendees will also hear from Pete Davey, a Stonehouse resident, who is a champion in helping revitalise community interaction by capturing stories and memories. Pete’s initiative involved Stonehouse residents to begin with however he now helps with other projects. These include history walks, photography courses, and training volunteers to use recording equipment and interview people. Pete will be instrumental in providing his expertise to the STAR volunteers to help them engage with all visitors at the fun day be they 4 or 104 and capture their memories at the Summer Fun Day on Saturday July 21.

A 19 year old student who has excelled with her work on a number of community projects in Barne Barton is now using her experience at Camp America in California.

Bridey Borda started working on a local photography project run by Tamar View and FotoNow - a local community interest company - when she was just 13.

Bridey said: “Six years ago I had no idea how to use a DSLR camera and now, through the support of FotoNow and Tamar View I have gone on to study photography, have had the chance to exhibit my work and even sold some of my work to the Lord Mayor!

“This then led me to being able to help young people to create their own work and produce Scrapbooks called Barne Barton: Then and Now. My photography at Tamar View has come full circle and I am now aiming to set up more photography and mixedmedia projects with young people in the future.”

Bridey, who attended Marine Academy Plymouth, is now studying youth and community work at Marjon

- having received a £4,000 bursary from FotoNow last year. The bursary was made available thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Clarion Futures and the North Yard Community Trust in support of a local heritage project called The Island Stories.

Earlier this year she applied to Camp America and is now assisting the photography department at YMCA Camp Campbell in Boulder Creek, California. She will also be involved in social media work.

Bridey flew out to the USA at the beginning of June and will return to the UK in September. Before she left Bridey said: “I am really excited to be heading off to America - it will be a totally new experience for me.”

While she is the USA Bridey will be heading to San Francsisco for an Ed Sheeran concert. “I can’t wait,” she added.

Pat Patel of Tamar View said: “We are delighted with Bridey’s success.

She has been a fantastic role model for young people in Barne Barton and has demonstrated just how much can be achieved with dedication and determination. We wish her well.”

City campaigns for support ships to be built in UK

Plymouth is to join a campaign calling for the next generation of ‘solid fleet support ships’ to be built in the UK. A campaign will be launched in the city on July 13 urging that vessels which supply and support the Royal Navy are built in this country rather than contracts being tendered to international competition.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “Quite

simply, we think the UK Government should have the ships – which will be supporting and supplying our warships – built in the UK. “This is a national campaign but the impact of the government’s proposed approach will be felt here, if this is allowed to happen. “This is about retaining ship building skills here in the UK, about insuring highly skilled businesses, including companies

such as Babcock which have specialist ship designers can have jobs and a continuing supply of work.

“We may not build warships here, but as Britain’s Ocean City and one which plays a key role in defending the realm as well as employs thousands of people in the marine and marine technology industries, we need the Government to change their approach.”
