Volunteers wanted to help Plymouth become UK’s first plastic-free coastline city

Plymouth is bidding to become the UK’s first plastic-free coastline city - but campaigners need to recruit an army of plastic free ambassadors from the local community to achieve the goal.

A three year plan for a plastic free Plymouth Sound is under way - but it needs to step up a level.

Plastic free ambassadors can be individuals, families or community groups and anyone worried about the threat of plastic is being encouraged to sign up.

Organisers are also looking for local businesses to become plastic free pioneers who may have been inspired by the recent action on single use plastics.

Plans will be announced soon on a range of actions and activities designed to put Britain’s Ocean City at the forefront of the battle against plastic pollution.

Beach and waterfront clean ups are organised regularly with details available on the ‘Plastic Free Plymouth Sound’ Facebook page.

National marine park plan for Plymouth Sound Labour MP Luke Pollard and a Plymouth University expert have called on Parliament to designate Plymouth Sound as the UK’s first national marine park.

Luke Pollard led a roundtable discussion attended by fellow MPs as well as experts from Natural England, Worldwide Fund for Nature, Wildlife Trist and the New Economics Foundation.

Plymouth University Professor Martin Attrill also made a keynote presentation at the event in Westminster.

He explained why marine national parks could be important and put forward Plymouth as the perfect location to test the concept due to its profile as Britain’s Ocean City and vibrant fishing industry.

Designating Plymouth Sound and Plymouth’s surrounding coastal waters as the UK’s first national marine park was an election pledge from Luke Pollard in the General Election last year.

Since June, he has been holding meetings in Plymouth to prepare proposals for a national marine park. The Westminster roundtable brought together MPs from all parties with Plymouth’s experts and London-based organisations, journalists, marine experts, government agencies and environmental campaigners.

The idea to consult on the creation of national marine parks was recently included in Labour’s new animal welfare plans. Like the classification of national parks which exist to protect the country’s green spaces, national marine parks aim to protect coastal waters, the seabed and marine habitats by bench-marking, monitoring and implementing changes to protect the environment.

make the case alongside Luke for the creation of national marine parks. The aim of the discussion was to establish the need for national marine parks to increase public engagement with the UK’s marine environment. While fishing is important to the UK economy, by expanding and diversifying the use of our coastal seas we can also massively boost coastal economies like Plymouth.

“Plymouth is the perfect location to receive a national marine park classification, as we benefit from a huge marine science community, a long maritime heritage, and are surrounded by national parks in Dartmoor and Exmoor. Most importantly, we have wonderful marine life fit for Blue Planet right here in our waters so we just need people to love and cherish the marine environment.

“A national marine park designation would be a huge asset to Plymouth and the opportunities that come from designations are exciting. We could see improvements in the local economy through increased employment and tourism, with new opportunities for local businesses, plus

potential benefits to health and welfare of getting people more engaged with the sea. I look forward to working with Luke in the next steps of this campaign.

Luke Pollard MP said: “Plymouth Sound already has a designated Special Area of Conservation and has Marine Conservation Zones. By consulting on this idea locally and nationally, the goal is to find a way of managing our waters to protect marine ecosystems, while sustaining naval, fishing and recreational activities.

“I am proud of Plymouth and its rich commitment to marine research and marine engineering. Not only do we have world-leading experts in our city at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Plymouth University, we also benefit from superb fishing grounds and a strong Naval heritage.

“Yet we simply are not doing enough to protect the beautiful sea-life and marine environment that surrounds us in Plymouth. We have an environmental responsibility to invest in our waters, and a designated National Marine Park in Plymouth would bring much-needed attention to environmental sustainability. We were all shocked by the Blue Planet documentary, which showed how urgently we must act to save our oceans. This is a first step of many towards doing that.

“I was pleased to see members from different parties join together for this important cause. I am also proud that Labour have committed to a consultation on National Marine Parks should they win at the next election.”

“I hope that this discussion is the first of many as we get closer to seeing a National Marine Park designation in Plymouth and in other coastal cities around the UK.”

High-flying Falcon team celebrates Western College Players Theatre Company are presenting a brand new adaptation of one of the greatest ever works of literature - Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.

Stagecoach’s South West Falcon service has celebrated carrying over half a million passengers by surprising customers boarding the service at Plymouth Coach Station.

Passengers waiting for the 10am departure on May 17 were met by the Stagecoach team who were handing out millionaire’s shortbread, free tickets and Falcon goodies. Mascot Pat the Falcon was also there to pose for photos.

Bob Dennison, Stagecoach South West’s managing director, said: “It’s amazing that, a little over two years since we started, we’re already celebrating this incredible milestone – and it’s fantastic to be able to share our success with our customers. This achievement is all down to our brilliant staff and our loyal passengers.”

May proved to be a bumper month for the Falcon with the service picking up silver at the UK Coach Awards for ‘Top Express Operation’ with judges commenting that it was ‘head and shoulders above’ other operators.

The operator introduced a new timetable for the service on May 21 which has been designed to improve reliability over the busy summer period.

Changes include a separate Friday timetable, more frequent journeys at the weekends and a revised route into Bristol that uses the South Bristol link road and Long Ashton Expressway.

Bob added: “The peak summer season means more holiday makers flying from Bristol Airport and more visitors heading to the South West. As we all know, this inevitably creates additional challenges on our road network. The new timetable takes these factors into consideration to

provide an even better service for our customers.”

Weekend of music to raise awareness of suicide Canadian performer Mishka Shubaly

March marked 100 years of votes for women To mark the centenary of votes for women, over 100 placard-bearing Soroptimists from Plymouth, St Austell and Torbay were joined by other women as they marched through Plymouth city centre, many wearing period costume.

The colourful parade attracted a lot of attention and media coverage including

Westcountry TV, Radio Devon and local newspapers.

Plymouth Soroptimist Hilary Preston came up with the idea and as well as organising the march, compiled a list of 100 women who have achieved a ‘first’ during the last century.

Talented students win NHS video competition Three students from Stoke Damerel Community College have won the Step into the NHS schools' competition for the South West of England.

Harley Friend, Josh Nankivell and Emile Archer impressed the Health Education England judges with their entry to promote the role of a chef. The trio created a humorous video, identifying the ‘ingredients’ needed to make a chef.

This video entry, along with others beat more than 1,700 entries across the country, as the competition attracted record numbers of pupils to get involved and learn more about careers in the NHS. Now in its ninth year, the competition aims to promote the 350 plus careers available in

health and social care professions across the NHS and students were tasked with designing an advertisement and job description for their chosen role, working individually or in groups of up to four.

Anna Frier, executive prinicipal of Stoke Damerel Community College said: "Harley, Josh and Emile worked extremely hard on their film and I am thrilled their efforts have been rewarded - especially out of so many entries.

"This competition is an excellent project, really engaging students with the workings of the health service and the different job options available to them. It is wonderful our students have won the regional prize for the third year in a row - we will be aiming to win

of the 100 notable women.

Plymouth’s then Lord Mayor Councillor Wendy Foster met the marchers at the end of the walk when everyone enjoyed afternoon tea provided by a Plymouth Soroptimist in the Council chambers.

Everyone agreed that it was a brilliant idea and all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. the national prize next year!”

Anna Brooking, careers and employability advisor of Stoke Damerel Community College added: “This is the third time we’ve won the regional prize and I’m very proud of all the students who took part. Being part of the competition gives them the chance to find out more about the wealth of careers in the NHS and they also get to exercise their creative side by coming up with imaginative ways of promoting the career they decided to focus on.”

Harley, 12, said: “It was really fun to develop our idea together as a team and it’s nice to hear people laugh when they watch it and think ‘we made this’.”

Josh, 12, said: “It’s a good way of showing how many different jobs there are and I’d recommend anyone to enter, it’s a fun and interesting project to be part of.”

Emile, 13, said: “We are always being given interesting and different things to do at Stoke Damerel. It’s been good to follow it through right from our first idea to seeing it on the screen and even better to have won!”

Virginia Stiff, recruitment manager for Livewell Southwest said: "I’d like to congratulate the three students and Stoke Damerel Community College on their fantastic entry. Young people are extremely important to the future of the NHS workforce.

It is important that the NHS engages with young people now and lets them know about the wealth of career opportunities.

“There are more than 350 different careers to choose from in health and jobs range from community matron, dietician or public health analyst to a finance manager or web developer. Initiatives such as the schools competition really help to raise awareness of this.”

More than 1,700 year 8 and 9 pupils in schools all over England entered the 2017/18 Step into the NHS schools’ competition, run

by Health Education England.

Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 - and members of the local music scene are doing their best to raise awareness of the problem.

Following the tragic suicides in February of two men connected to the Plymouth art and music scene, local musicians, artists and promoters alike wanted to do something.

Spearheaded by Ben Turner of the Underground on Mutley Plain and Rory Lethbridge, promoter and lead singer of the local band School Disco, the aim is to raise money and awareness of suicide by putting on two days of live music on June 22 and 23.

All proceeds from the event, called the CALM MIND Weekender, will be shared between Mind - Britain’s leading mental health charity - and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

Staggered between the Junction and the Underground, the bands will be coming from as far as Canada to support the fundraiser. More than 20 bands and a number of individual performers will be giving their time to the cause.

Headlining the Junction on Friday night will be Plymouth based American Sign Language and Ontario comedian and songwriter Mishka Shubaly, while over at the Underground, alternative country favourites Paul Armer and The Long Way Down will be signing off the evening.

On Saturday, local grunge giants Radiosaurus will headline at the Junction, with indie psych outfit Tunnel Visions top of the bill across the road at the Underground.

Listen to the noises that come out of the horn, can you guess from where they were born? The sound collectors are listening and gathering up a cacophony of sounds to put into the sound machine. Fun, visual and interactive, this piece of theatre will be a joy to all the senses.

The Red Devils - official parachute team of the British Army will end the show - landing in the water in spectacular style.

Plymouth Model Show Jun 30 Plymouth Guildhall Come along to the annual scale model show. Two large displays will commemorate 100 years since WWI finished and also the centenary of the Royal Air Force. There will be static and radio control models, mo del railways and a variety of displays from South West model clubs and winner model clubs from Brittany. A model competition is also taking place during the day. The cafe sells hot and cold food and there will be a tombola running throughout the event.

Plymouth Hoe Bike Nights Jul 5 The Hoe Plymouth Hoe Bike Nights returns to the Hoe Promenade by kind permission of Plymouth City Council in support of local children’s charity Jeremiah’s Journey. With a requested minimum donation of £1 per person, hundreds of motorbikes, trikes and quads of all types will congregate together. Don’t have a bike? British Firework Championships Aug 8 - 9 The Hoe The world famous British Firework Championships is set to return to Plymouth’s Waterfront in August. Each year, six professional display firework companies are selected by a draw to take part, and despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997. In addition to the dazzling display of fireworks, there is entertainment on the Hoe including a fun fair with thrill rides, Heart FM providing live music and a number of catering facilities available to stave off any hunger during the show.

City artist’s work on show in Cornwall

Michael Hill, the president of Plymouth Watercolour Society, is exhibiting his work at an exhibition in St Ives from the end of May.

Michael, who lives in the city, will be showing 10 of his latest paintings at Salthouse Gallery, Norway Square, St Ives from May 26 to June 2.

He will be exhibiting with Dartmoor landscape painter Shirley Kirkcaldy.

“I know Shirley from my framer,” explained Michael. “We share a room there where we teach.”

Shirley said: “This will be our first collaboration and then we will also be exhibiting together in East Dulwich in June and July. I am delighted that Michael and I are exhibiting together in two great locations. Our style is very different but collectively it sits well together.”

Aerobatic spectacular for Armed Forces Day Plymouth Armed Forces Day will feature a stunning air display when it takes place on Plymouth Hoe on Saturday June 30.

Aircraft including a Spitfire XIV, Calidus Gyro and Catalina will take to the skies above Plymouth Sound to entertain spectators, who will also be able to enjoy dramatic aerobatic shows.

The Catalina is a flying boat, with a special historical connection to Plymouth. At least two were based at Mount Batten and flown by the Royal Australian Air Force in the early years of Second World War. Aerobatics team displays will be performed

by Team Raven – a group of five pilots flying an RV4 and RV8s – the Muscle Pitts team biplane and the Fireflies Aerobatic Display Team.

Solo displays will be performed by Mark Jeffries, who placed in the top ten at the last World Aerobatic Championships and Cornish

pilot Corinne Dennis. Corinne will perform a dramatic display in her Pitts Special S-1S G-TWRL, with a combination of rolls and pirouettes, gymnastic manoeuvres and aerial ballet, all highlighted by the trail of white smoke.

Other displays include the Calidus Autogyro – which flies close to the crowd – and the AeroSuperBatics Wingwalkers; fearless wingwalkers who will perform acrobatics on the top wing of a Boeing Stearman biplane.

The Red Devils, the official parachute display team of the British Army, will end the show with a spectacular parachute show, landing in the water. Formed in 1964, the team is made up of 15 men – all full-time serving paratroopers who return to combat duties when required.

The demonstration is part of the training for the annual Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity Field Gun Competition, at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, on Saturday, June 2.

Crews from as far as Gibraltar will compete for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy. Fast and furious, the contest requires 18-man teams to

run, dismantle and reassemble and fire the wheeled-cannon in the shortest time possible over a set course. Strength, stamina and team work are essential in this challenge.

Managing and training the Devonport team are Warrant Officer Spike Way, Warrant Officer Tash Pulley and Petty Officer Danny Card. All of the Devonport crew are based within the dockyard as well being supported by ships, submarines and Royal Marines from 1Assault Squadron Royal Marines.

Staged in honour of a Royal Naval crew who carried and fired guns during the Boer war, the event plays to the military ethos including courage, discipline, teamwork, integrity, loyalty and commitment.

Danny said: “As the heavy gun and limber is moving quickly across the ground, each team member is required to put their body on the line in order to start, stop and lift the kit during the run. A moment of self-doubt can lead to serious injury so being brave and sticking with what you have been taught is extremely important to the run.

“The team is made up of all ranks, rates and experiences. It is for this reason that everybody respects each other’s opinion and experience for the benefit of the team regardless of rank.

“The type of person that would normally be attracted to field gun is someone who thrives in a team environment, physically fit, has a competitive nature and is able to apply lessons learned through coaching quickly from the trainer.’’

England plays for England

Matt England and Paul Rapson of Plymouth-based ME Heating were selected to play football for England when heating systems manufacturer, Viessmann, arranged a football match between its most talented English and German trained heating installers.

Sadly for Matt and Paul, they lost 1-8 to a slick German side, but still enjoyed their sporting adventure.

The Plymouth players joined team mates from Kendal, Cambridgeshire, Derby and Huddersfield to play at the Premier League side’s PPG Canalside Training Ground.

German heating systems manufacturer, Viessmann, is the official heating partner to Huddersfield Town and has been a team sheet sponsor for the past three seasons. The match came just days after it was confirmed that Huddersfield Town would stay up in the Premier League next season.

Viessmann marketing director, Darren McMahon, said: “The ‘Viessmann Vriendly’ has become a great way for some of our heating engineers to build relationships with their German counterparts and celebrate the strong Anglo-German link that is mirrored at Huddersfield Town, with its German manager and players. Believing in the Power to Change may seem like believing in the impossible.

If you popped your head into the former Clipper Pub on Union Street you would witness a stunning work in progress that is making the impossible possible through cheerful volunteering and not being afraid to go where none have been before!

The Plymouth Chronicle found Hannah Sloggett and Lizzie Guest deep in the former men’s urinal wrenching off the fixtures after weeks of work.

“This will become one of our lovely retail units”, explained Wendy Hart, a director of Nudge Community Builders, alongside Hannah.

It does take vision to see how a former, somewhat unpleasant toilet can be transformed in this way, but Nudge are experts in taking the unlovely and turning it around.

“As local residents, we are passionate about Union Street, and about effecting change ourselves, rather than waiting and wishing that someone else would do it” said Wendy.

“We bought the old pub as a Community Benefit Society, with help from the Affordable Housing Loan Facility from Plymouth City Council. The shares will cost as little as £50, can be bought by anyone, or by a group, and will yield a 3.6% return. It is a risk, like any stocks and shares, but investors can guarantee that their money will be part of bringing life back to Union Street one property at a time.

“The plan is to convert the downstairs of the pub into a communal market area where people can try out a business idea with no strings attached.” said Hannah.

“Someone could even run the café on a taste it and see basis to see if they could make a business out of their hospitality idea.

“Even if used as a cut through, it will be an exciting, vibrant inside/outside space full of creativity and invention – food, flowers and feel good.

“We hope to open the down stairs shortly and will start renovating the upstairs, so we can let two flats out to local people in need.

The stolen Accent 1400 device, which Miya relied on to communicate with friends and family, was discovered at Plymouth Cash Converters on Saturday 5 May, by store supervisor Shane Lowe.

Following a series of swift and strict security checks, Shane realised that the device in front

of him once belonged to Miya and alerted local police and arrests followed.

The laptop was returned to Miya’s family on Bank Holiday Monday much to the delight of Miya who had missed the familiar technology of the machine that had been personally adapted for her needs.

Miya’s father, Paul said: “We are hugely grateful to Cash Converters for alerting the police and for recognising that the laptop was an invaluable, specialist voice converter device. This particular model is the one Miya finds easiest to use so we are really very relieved. Miya’s mum is about to give birth any day so we have two very special deliveries for the family!

Miya re-united with stolen voice machine The father of 16-year-old disabled teenager has spoken of his family’s joy after she was reunited with her stolen voice machine thanks to Cash Converters.

The theft triggered a nationwide appeal four months ago - but it was not until May 5 that the culprits were arrested.

Speaking following the arrest of two men in connection with the theft, Paul Johnson of Pennycross, has revealed that the family never dreamed the specialist voice-generating laptop worth £6000 would ever be returned.

However, Plymouth Police have made two arrests and have returned the stolen voice machine to Miya, who is now able to use the machine which

The replacement voice machine will be returned and the funds will go to updating Miya’s machine and a donation will be made to the Little Harbour Children’s Hospice in Saint Austell where Miya has received specialist care.

Mr Johnson added: “Miya uses the hospice services at times and this money will be of tremendous help. They do incredible work with the kids.”

Mike Stevenson, the operations director at Plymouth Cash Converters, commented: “Shane had an eagle eye and was quick-thinking. We have a great relationship with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and work with them closely in cases like this.

In 2014 he was asked by Stonehouse Timebank to help take these ideas further by capturing the stories and memories of Stonehouse in the words of the people who know it well. Residents past and present were invited to be recorded into what has become an archive of the people for the people of Stonehouse.

The 100Homes project, as it is known, has grown steadily, recognised by various funding bodies as a way of involving local people in the rediscovery of their community – through oral history, research, and connections between generations.

Kind of like a 21st Century version of sitting around the campfire listening to the elders of the village.

It’s the kind of community interaction we are in danger of losing, were it not for people like Pete.

He explained: “We have a great history in the city, but we don’t capture it right. Stonehouse has always been a transit area, growing up around dockyards and military bases – and we have always had diversity; something that is continued by the city’s present dispersal status for refugees.

“People have looked out for one another in the past, and our project is enabling them to do so again. We have testimonies of individuals who were depressed and agrophobic who have become involved with the project, had their voice heard and listened to, and who began to turn around to support others.

Pete works hard to engage the city’s universities and students with the project, helping to run history walks, photography courses, blogs and training to use the recording equipment and talking to people.

He also works closely with the School of Creative Arts bringing together young people with those who have been through tremendous sociological upheavals and lived to tell the tale. Whether in blitzed Plymouth or war-torn Syria.

100Homes is now expanding under a committed steering group of 20 people so that social isolation is continuing to be broken down with a wide variety of community activities and projects are spiralling off as people widen their interests – a book and play are underway; Walks with History regularly have 50-60 attendees to their history walks and talks of the area; and a live radio show is part of the curriculum for pupils of the Red House School.

Despite this flurry of activity, and the national interest shown for this expanding project, Pete remains very down to earth and committed to his original goals of bringing local people along with any project that’s about them.

He’s around every Tuesday morning from 10am at the Oasis Project Café’s residents’ coffee morning, and although he has well over 100 stories on tape, he’s always interested in knowing yours.

WASHING MACHINE XWSC61251W A remarkable collaboration between an award-winning artist and a young man with Aspergers Syndrome has led to the publication of an inspiring new book.

Steven Dodd, who lives in Crownhill, was diagnosed with Aspergers at the age of 24 and with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder shortly after.

Despite this, Steven’s determination has seen him win medals at the World Games, raise thousands of pounds for charity and visit Kosova on several occasions to help rebuild the war damaged homes of widows.

He is driven by a passion to achieve and help others to do the same.

A chance meeting at the beginning of 2016 provided Steven with the opportunity to fulfil this ambition.

While attending a fund-raising event for a cancer charity Steven met Lester Jones, who is the events organiser for Plymouth and Cornwall Cancer Fund.

Lester, an award-winning artist, designer and musician, draws his inspiration from his volunteer work supporting cancer patients and encouraging people of all ages to ‘give it a go.’

Steven’s enthusiasm and determination impressed Lester and the pair worked on a host of fund raising events in the months that followed.

Last year Steven asked Lester if he could write his life story to inspire others to achieve.

Lester, who lives in Lipson, said: “I told Steven that I didn’t think I was skilled enough to write a biography, but in the past I had worked as a designer with Lego creating different characters.

“Steven is a fan of superheroes and we decided that his story could be told through an illustrated children’s book featuring superheroes.”

Lester then spent nearly a year writing the story and creating illustrations of more than 20 animal characters - many of them based on Steven’s family and friends.

Owls are Steven’s favourite animals, so not surprisingly the main character is called SuperOwl. He is the hero of the new 100-page book written and illustrated by Lester called ‘SuperOwl - Being Different Makes You Super.’

Lester said: “Being different makes you super is a slogan to help and encourage children and young people with Aspergers

Syndrome, autism or any form of disability to enjoy their lives and show that with support from their friends and family they can achieve great things.”

The book was launched in May and is available online at Amazon and Kindle and also at Waterstones and other major book stores. It has a cover price of £6.99.

Steven and Lester will be doing a book signing at Waterstones in Plymouth on June 2 and also visiting schools and local libraries to spread the positive message in the book.

When he is not promoting the book Steven is busy training for the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi in March next year. Having previously won silver medals in kayaking, Steven has now been selected to join Team GB as a powerlifter.

Steven said: “I could not continue with kayaking because my coach sadly died of cancer. It was a huge shock for me, but for the last two years I have been training as a powerlifter. I am very proud of my achievements and would love to come home with another medal.” With Steven’s determination and commitment that is certainly a strong possibility!

Clarion call from Clarion Choir!

Three local athletes chosen for Team UK at Invictus Games Three former military personnel from Plymouth and Torpoint have been selected to represent the UK at the Invictus Games in Australia in October.

Plymouth’s Nick Martin and Mark Ormrod will join Deborah Godfrey from Torpoint in the 72-strong team, of wounded, injured and sick (WIS) serving military personnel and veterans.

Details of the competitors selected for Team UK were announced at a special ceremony at Horse Guards Parade in London. The UK delegation to the Invictus Games in Sydney is being delivered by a partnership of the Ministry of Defence, Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion.

The team will compete in 11 sports: athletics; archery; wheelchair basketball; cycling; powerlifting; indoor rowing; wheelchair rugby; swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair tennis and a new sport for 2018, sailing.

They will continue to train from now until October in various locations across the country as part of Help for Heroes’ extensive Sports Recovery programme and role to train and develop the team.

Former Leading hand Nick Martin served in the Royal Navy until 1986. Having watched the past two Invictus Games, the 61-year-old from

Plymouth felt inspired to take part: “I realised that I want to challenge myself, not as a punishment this time but as a celebration. The self-abuse that I carried out over the years needed to stop.

“I am now fully committed to a recovery programme to help me move forward. I’ve allowed my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to control the way that I have seen and led my life over many years. I now see life as a blessing not a burden. I’ve changed things. I try new things. It isn’t easy to get out of the rut but I’m peering over the parapet. I am ready to live a productive, healthy life again!”

Former Royal Marine Commando Mark Ormrod was injured in 2007 when he stepped on an IED. The 34-year-old was medically discharged and found solace in the 2017 Invictus Games. This year, he hopes to build on his achievements in Toronto.

“Last year was not only my first time participating at the Games, but it was my first time trying any adaptive sport at all since my injuries. It had a huge impact on my recovery and my life. Because of this

sport is now a regular part of my life and I really want to build on last year, better my performance and push myself as far as I can.

“I want to feel like I have 100% dominated my injuries. I am building on the improvement of my mental health through sport too, encouraging as many other veterans as possible to take up some form of sport as therapy.”

Former Master-at-arms Debbie Godfrey, served in the Royal Navy until she was medically discharged in 2006: “I was sad that I had served for 20 years and I didn’t want to be medically discharged with only two years left to serve. It hit me hard.

The 49-year-old from Torpoint credits sport and the Invictus Games as being a tremendous help towards her ongoing recovery: “My mental health has already started to improve, and my physical health will too.

“My life has already changed because of Invictus. Representing the UK and competing at the Invictus Games is not only an inspirational goal for me, but it’s also a dream for my daughters to see me become me again and watch me achieve my aim.

“Our family is now unified by a common positive and healthy aim, I am starting to feel more connected.

Basically, Invictus has brought me out of hiding and out of myself.”

City College Plymouth students have been learning the tricks of the trade from local businessman and entrepreneur Trevor Worth.

Trevor was approached by business student Edward Nettleship who arranged the talk for his fellow students to gain advice and guidance on the next steps in their careers.

Edward said: “I chose to approach Trevor because he is passionate about business and entrepreneurial spirit.

I admire how committed he is to helping others and his ambition to mentor the next generation of business people.

Trevor talked with real enthusiasm about his company and how he has become the businessman he is today.

He gave us some great advice and answered all of our questions, which meant that we all left full of inspiration.

His presentation really drove home that we should all have passion about what we do and work hard to meet our goals.”

Trevor Worth, who set-up his thriving law firm Portcullis Legals - single-handily in 1988 came to the college to talk about his own career and advise the students on how to make it in the industry.

He said: “As a former City College student I wanted to give back to the place where I found my passion for business and pass on a few pearls of wisdom to the next generation of business people and leaders. I feel it is

incredibly important to speak to young people about the realities of the industry, and inspire them to get out there and start their careers.”

Plymouth charity’s appeal for donations to help refugees

A Plymouth charity is urgently appealing for donations to fill a humanitarian container of aid to be shipped to Greece.

In October 2015 in response to the refugee crisis Open Hearts Open Borders Refugee Aid (OHOB) was launched, and now two and a half years later the community grass roots organisation is once again asking for urgent donations for the container of humanitarian aid, which is once again being sent to the camps in Lesvos Greece.

The container is due to leave Saltash at the end of June, and the volunteers are appealing for donations of specific but essential aid items to fill the shipment.

Despite less media attention, boats arrive daily onto the islands in Greece, and the situation in the camps is still fraught with difficulties and at crisis point. Camps are overcrowded and conditions are unsafe.

There are currently 13,000 men, women and children stuck on the Greek Islands, according to figures sourced from Amnesty International.

Many of those stuck on the islands have fled war-torn countries and arrive on the islands with nothing.

Aid supplies are running low with the continual arrivals and essential items are urgently required once again for the summer months.

Faraday Fearnside, founder and director of Open Hearts Open Borders said: “People are living in dire conditions on the islands and it is easy to feel helpless when you see the images.

“We may not be able to stop the conflict, but we can provide what is needed to those stuck in the camps. I believe the time has come for solutions: the refugee crisis has reached a point where if we can all work together to create the change needed we can do so much more and we can then think differently about what is happening.”

Requests received from Greece are asking for more consumable items such as washing up liquid, washing

detergent, towels, nappies, wet wipes, male and female toiletries, mosquito repellent, dried and tinned vegetarian and dried food items.

Further essential items needed are blankets and sleeping bags, new socks and underwear for men, women and children and for the summer months short and long sleeved t-shirts, women’s summer scarves, light trousers and skirts and new flip flops and crocs.

“If we can give some of the refugees on the island a small piece of comfort, we are saying....we are here and willing to help in whatever way we can.”

FARADAY FEARNSIDE Faraday added: “Needs are constantly changing and items now required are really what we all need on a day to day basis; families are living in tents just like we live in our homes here in the UK, so the daily needs are just like ours.

“If we can give some of the refugees on the island a small piece of comfort, we are saying that the world has not turned their back on those in the refugee camps; we are saying we are here and willing to help in whatever way we can.”

In 2017, Open Hearts Open Borders (OHOB) raised over £20,000, which was used to collect and ship aid, purchase aid items and support resettlement in the South West. As a voluntary organisation all donations and funding goes back into the organisation to achieve its aims.

OHOB currently collect and ship aid for families and individuals in France and Greece on a regular basis.

Here in the UK they provide support with resettlement by sourcing or purchasing furniture items, clothing and baby items for refugees who are

granted status and find safety in the South West.

OHOB also support local and regional projects and have collected and provided sleeping bags and clothing for the homeless and given tinned and dried food items to Foodbanks in Devon and Cornwall. As well as collecting for the container aid, a shipment of pallets has just been sent to Greece, and at the end of June a van will be going over to France to deliver items to Dunkirk and Calais.

OHOB started as a small community Facebook group with 500 members and has organically grown into a not for profit charitable organisation with over 2,280 supporters all working together for change. The goal for 2018 is to raise even more, so that aid shipments and support with resettlement items and furniture can continue.

Faraday said: “The time and unconditional love given by the community and our volunteers in everything we do ensures we can continue sending aid to Europe or support local projects.

“OHOB is about what we can give back to the world and to those who have suffered as a consequence of circumstance. It was built on the foundation of unconditional giving, which is such a simple premise; kindness costs nothing.”

On May 26 and June 2 from 11am to 2pm volunteers will be at QStore Business Centre, Moorlands Trading Estate in Saltah if anyone would like to drop off any items listed.

Cookery is a real mouthful for language students Language skills are something we can always improve and develop, and students from City College Plymouth have been doing just this through a series of hands-on courses.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students have been combining cookery and conversation to improve their English.

Aromatic smells wafted from the kitchen, causing mouths to water and bellies to rumble, as the ESOL students whipped up a Thai green curry on the last day of the course.

They were helped by City College’s chef lecturer, Richard Farleigh, who said: “Here at the college we have a large number of students for whom English is a second language and we wanted to design a fun and interesting way to help them improve their

communication skills. Combining language with an activity, like cooking, has been proven to be a very effective way to learn; so we created a programme to feed both their minds and stomachs.

“This course has been a great success and I have really enjoyed teaching them. Over just a few weeks I have noticed an improvement and I’m hoping they will leave us hungry to continue improving their language and cooking skills.”

Covering everything from developing knife skills to cooking on a budget, the course culminated in an exam where the students had to create three healthy meals from a long list of ingredients.

Award winning project is seeking interns for September An award winning project that supports young adults with learning disabilities to find and keep paid employment is seeking interns for its next course, starting in September 2018.

Project SEARCH is a partnership between University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Pluss, Serco and City College Plymouth who create employment opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities.

Together, they provide supported work based experiences in Derriford Hospital, where the interns learn the skills that all employers need, together with specific skills for individual jobs.

The scheme supports young adults, aged between 18 and 24, with learning disabilities who live in Plymouth.

The interns experience three supported internships within Derriford Hospital and complete a Level 1 academic course.

In its first seven years, 74% of the project’s interns have gone on to achieve competitive paid employment.

Project SEARCH Intern, Henry Flavell, who gained employment as a porter for Serco

within Derriford Hospital, said: “I really enjoyed working with Serco. Now it has become a paid job I’ll be able to carry on working in a great team.

“Having paid work means I can save and it will make me more independent.”

Henry’s mother commented: “It’s been phenomenal, his confidence has come on, what would we do without you all?”

Pip Critten, Pluss employment advisor, commented: “Henry is the 26th Project Henry Flavell

SEARCH intern to gain paid employment within Derriford Hospital with another 19 gaining employment elsewhere in the city.”

He continued: “It’s a win-win situation as the interns gain skills and employment while the employers get trained, reliable and dedicated employees, helping to reduce recruitment costs and staff turnover.”

Building bridges to STEM careers Teams of Plymouth school children were keeping everyone in ‘suspense’ as they competed against the clock to construct a 12-metre-long suspension bridge.

Over 90 pupils from across the city took part in the ‘Bridges to Schools’ project held at City College Plymouth. Schools involved included Stoke Damerel Community College and Eggbuckland Community College.

The young people had to work together to build a structurally stable cable-stayed bridge in under an hour.

Students were challenged to design, create, solve and innovate to successfully complete the task. Louise Daniel from the Institution of Civil Engineers said: “This project is more than simply learning about bridges and engineering, it helps students to experience and appreciate the many industry roles found in civil engineering - from project managers to fixers.

“Workshops like these highlight the importance of working as a team; it shows how to take on responsibility and enables students to understand the importance of seeing a project through to its final outcome. It has been fantastic to work with City College Plymouth to engage young people and encourage an interest in civil engineering.”

An exhibition celebrating the NHS in Plymouth is continuing at Ford Park Cemetery.

‘Celebrating 70 Years of the NHS in Plymouth’ takes a look at how Plymothians embraced the start of the NHS and the city’s hospitals - both old and new. The exhibition runs until Sunday July 8 and is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Multi-million pound project to fill city skills gap by 2020 City College Plymouth has partnered with colleges and universities from across the South West to help launch a multi-million pound initiative to improve higher skill levels across the region, with a particular focus on STEM subjects.

Supported by a grant from the European Social Fund (ESF), the scheme involves 10 institutions working on two projects which promote science, technology engineering and maths (STEM) skills.

The ‘Hidden Talent’ project aims to engage with people of all ages who are currently unlikely to access higher-level education and training. The second project, ‘Strategic Employer Engagement’ will work with small to medium-sized employers to identify skills gaps and look to design higher-level qualifications that will address them.

City College’s ESF Higher Skills project manager, Kelly Quick, said: “This is an incredibly important project for both employers and individuals in the South West.

“At the college, we design our courses with employability in mind and so work closely with local employers to ensure we

meet any skills gaps. To be able to do this on a larger scale is a fantastic prospect.

“Engaging with a previously inaccessible group of individuals, encouraging the current

workforce to update and improve their skills, and discussing skills gaps with employers will mean by 2020 we will have a highly-qualified workforce that will assist with the growth of businesses in the region.”

The ESF is the European Union’s main financial instrument for supporting the creation of more jobs in the EU and was awarded to City College, working in collaboration with the University of Plymouth, Plymouth College of Art, Bridgwater and Taunton College, Petroc College, South Devon College, Strode College, Exeter University and Yeovil College.

The projects will run until April 2020 and focus on creating higher and degree apprenticeships to help meet the identified skills gaps.

They are staging their first collective exhibition at the Cells Gallery in Devonport Guildhall in June.

The exhibition runs from Tuesday June 12 to Saturday June 23 and will showcase paintings, textiles, ceramics and jewellery. All the work displayed together with cards and gifts will be available to purchase.

The exhibition is open daily from Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and will be attended by one of the artists on each of the days.

The Plymouth Artists Collective is the brainchild of Rosie Cunningham who wanted to provide a platform for Plymouth artists to exhibit their work, network, open their studios as a collective event and share ideas and contacts.

Rosie said: “We are a group of four at present but I hope that others will join when they see the benefits of forming a bespoke Plymouth Collective.

The exhibition in the Cells at Devonport Guildhall is our inaugural event and the meet the artists event on the June 15 is designed to both sell our art and encourage other artists to join us.

“By putting on collective events we aim to promote a diverse range of arts for all tastes.”

Jillian Morris is a textiles artist whose work is inspired by the moors, seas and gardens.

Most of her work is hand woven or mixed media textiles, sometimes using hand-dyed threads, and introducing techniques such as stitch and coiling. She makes a variety of items, from the more traditional woven scarves and wall hangings, to woven and embellished vessels, and small woven tapestries.

Designer maker, Sheron King specialises in creating beautiful one off pieces and small collections using upcycled textiles, mixed media and ceramics.

From the beginning of October to the end of April we practice at St Bartholomew’s Church Hall, opposite the Life Centre, on Thursdays 8 - 9.45pm.

During the summer we dance out on Thursday evenings at various pubs and other venues in and around Plymouth. We also dance at occasional folk festivals and days of dance. The group runs from 10.00 until 11.30am every Friday during term-time in the church lounge. There is a large selection of toys, a craft table and the session concludes with nursery rhymes and action songs. A charge of £1.50 for one adult and accompanying child/ children and £1 for extra adults covers all refreshments and craft materials. We hold occasional Tabletop Sales in the church hall to support the Children’s Hospice Southwest.

Respect Festival returns in July The popular Plymouth Respect Festival returns to the city on Saturday July 14.

After a two year break, Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council (PDREC), with support from other organisations, has decided to bring back one of Plymouth’s best loved festivals.

Since the first festival 20 years ago, the event continued to develop each year and this year it will return to its home roots at Plymouth Guildhall.

The free event will showcase Plymouth’s diversity with a variety of performers, food, street parades and interactive information stands.

City WALK IT! raises £11,000 Well over 200 people took part in the WALK IT! event in Plymouth to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The event was a huge success with 50 people signing up on the day, bringing the total number of walkers to 230.

Stonehouse studio secured, thanks to Corrie’s badman

A huge art studio set away in an industrial setting in Stonehouse has been secured for several years, and its all thanks to the notorious character Pat Phelan who has just met his comeuppance on TV’s Coronation Street.

Most fans of the Street will know that Phelan is played by Conner McIntyre, a man of many talents who despite being born in the North has made Plymouth his home. It was in Plymouth where Connor first found a love of acting at the Barbican Theatre, and through acting found a love of fine art. Connor took to painting when he was researching the role Robert Lenkiewicz; another local legend. Connor doesn’t do things by half and decided on a degree course in art at the University of Plymouth.

He exhibited at the Royal William Yard after finishing an MA in Contemporary Art Practice in 2015, this was during a break from the Street, he had started playing the role of Phelan five years ago!

Speaking with the Radio Times online Connor said that “In practical terms, my time on Corrie has secured my art studio, The Alamo, for the next few years which means an awful lot. It’s run by my partner, who is also a painter, and we mentor graduates.”

He continued to explain that they don’t get money from anybody and that his time on Coronation Street had given him “a window to other places to talk about these things”.

But for Connor, it was not just about the money, he spoke about the friendships he had formed as well as the awards (he won villain of the year in 2016 and leads the nomination in this years awards to be announced early in June) plus the love of the public. In conclusion Conner said, “There’s probably a very long list of things that Coronation Street has given me.”

Meanwhile, it’s been announced that Conner will join Les Dennis in panto this year.

Sadly their Ugly Sisters will be at Manchester Opera House, quite a drive from Plymouth.

The Modern Britain Council are travelling to the House of Commons in June to spend a day with the Parliamentary Education Service – members of the council are elected by their fellow students each year.

“They talked with passion about their experiences at the College, in particular how the students and they are working within the community, including sports leadership, the environment, and their health choices.

I’m extremely grateful to him for giving us so much time from his busy schedule - it was an inspiring and fascinating afternoon for all of us. “

Students get insight into life as an MP Students at a Plymouth secondary school had a unique opportunity to quiz MP Luke Pollard about life in the Commons and his first year as an MP. Representatives of Stoke Damerel Community College’s Executive Council and Modern Britain Council put a range of questions to Mr Pollard – who was elected to represent Plymouth Sutton and Devonport at the June 2017 election - when he visited the college in May. Among the questions were what was his favourite thing about Plymouth (answer: the Hoe) and why he wanted to be an MP. Mr

Pollard also shared tips for public speaking and gave students an insight into what being an MP entails on a day-to-day basis.

Anna Trickett, who is in Year 10 , said she was surprised how “normal” Mr Pollard was.

“You expect MPs to be a certain way but he was very friendly and normal and it was interesting to hear how he wants Plymouth to change, I really enjoyed talking to him.”

“It was a pleasure to spend time with the Executive Council and the Modern Britain Council,” said Mr Pollard.

Plymouth veteran to take part in Warrior Games

A wounded veteran from Plymouth will proudly serve his country again in a major sports event for injured and sick servicemen and women.

Dave Wilson, who is 68, is one of 40 veterans and service personnel who have been selected by military charity Help for Heroes to represent the UK at the 2018 Warrior Games which is taking place in June.

The athletes will take part in the 2018 Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games from June 1 to June 9 in Colorado Springs. Approximately 265 service members and veterans representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and US Special Operations Command as well as the United Kingdom Armed Forces, Canadian Forces and the Australian Defence Force will participate in the competition.

The UK Team, which is supported and delivered by Help for Heroes, will take part in nine adaptive sports: athletics, archery, cycling, indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, shooting, swimming, powerlifting and wheelchair basketball.

Dave was serving with the Royal Artillery in Warminster, when he was injured on exercise which left him with mobility and mental health issues. Since 2014 he’s been receiving support from Help for Heroes’ Plymouth Recovery Centre. As well as getting assistance for the mental

wounds he received from his time in the military, he’s also able to indulge his passion for horticulture in the centre’s garden and taking part in sport.

“It was tremendous,” said Dave. “The welfare team at the Recovery Centre introduced me to a different world. Getting through the door was a personal challenge but you do what you have to do. I met people who had similar issues to me. Within a few months I was seeing the people I needed to see to help with my problems.”

In the games he will be competing in archery, shooting, sitting discus and sitting volleyball. He says he’s thrilled to be selected: “It’s an

awesome achievement no matter what age you are or what disability you have. I’m very proud and all of my family are too.”

Martin Colclough, head of sports recovery at Help for Heroes said: “We know how important sport is as part of an individual’s recovery, not only does it help physically, sport empowers Veterans and provides huge psychological benefits too including improving self-confidence and selfesteem. The Warrior Games provides the opportunity for these men and women to proudly serve their country again and have a second chance at life. Through these Games, they get to experience being part of a team again, something the military often miss after suffering a life-changing Dave Wilson injury or illness.

“The Warrior Games team represents just 40 of our wounded heroes; there are thousands more out there that need our support, for life.

Worth over £91 billion to the UK, the explosion of the creative economy has prompted the launch of the ‘1000 Makers’ campaign by local social enterprise, RIO – the Real Ideas Organisation.

RIO’s ‘1,000 Makers’campaign shines a light on the growth and prosperity of the creative industries for children and young people in the city. Now being heralded as the 4th Industrial Revolution, new technologies are combining with established practice to change the way we work and live our lives.

Launched in May to a community of creatives and business leaders, the campaign provides opportunities for businesses and Plymouth’s burgeoning community of makers to offer experiences to children and young people.

Jonathan Clitheroe, head of challenge based learning at RIO, said: “We believe it is essential that Plymouth’s young people have the experience of being makers, rather than solely passive consumers of technology. Our world needs makers: versatile, emotionally intelligent and agile makers. Makers who create with language, image, code, steel, clay or even policy.’

Lindsey Hall, chief executive of RIO, said: “In a world where the take up of creative subjects in schools is being squeezed and where industry is crying out for creative skills, 1000 Makers is a campaign to provide visibility to the fast-growing creative economy and show the significant potential for a career in this sector.”

1000 Makers echoes the government’s stance that creative skills are at the heart of the UK’s industrial strategy and with the creative industries growing at twice the rate of the UK economy as a whole, it is important to ensure today’s young people are prepared for the future career landscape.

Working with local makers, the first workshops kick-off at Ocean Studios in the picturesque Royal William Yard in June.

Participants will take part in high energy, collaborative making sessions where they will produce tech-enabled, large-scale scrap sculptures.

At the same time, the 1000 Makers website will launch, listing events and making

opportunities for children and young people as well as industry insight on the demand for creative skills in the workplace.

Other upcoming activity offers a chance for young people to get involved in Plymouth’s inaugural Robotic Sailing Championships in September, and Illuminate, the jaw-dropping light festival staged as part of Mayflower 400 celebrations when it returns to the city in November.

The Pharisees, blinded by their own offence and agendas, could never see God’s law with God’s eyes, so they missed His heart.

We can wonder whether Jesus’ conviction of their sin was enough to cut those hard hearts to allow love in again. After all, He is their Father, too.

More than punishing her sin, Jesus wanted her to be the woman He knew she could be. Theodore Dostoevsky said: ‘To love a person, means to see him as God intended him to be.’ Our accusers, those who hurt us, and ourselves included. That’s a tough call, so we need God’s help to do it.

Plymouth MP Luke Pollard has praised the work of local campaigners following the Government's announcement of a £400 million fund to replace dangerous tower block cladding - including those in Devonport.

The announcement came almost a year after the Grenfell fire and follows a long term campaign from MP Luke Pollard, and a petition by Devonport Councillor, Bill Stevens calling on Government to help Plymouth Community Homes with the estimated costs of £13 million for the essential work.

Theresa May announced the Government will fully fund the removal and replacement of dangerous cladding by councils and housing associations, estimated at £400 million. Despite verbal assurances of support from central Government in the wake of the Grenfell fire, it taken almost eleven months for promises to be matched with funding.

Luke Pollard said this meant justice for the

people of Devonport but criticised the delay in the decision. Despite failing safety tests in the wake of the fire, similar combustible cladding still remains on three tower blocks in Mount Wise, Devonport.

The Labour MP has also called for Government to make sure Plymouth Community Homes is given the full funding that it needs. There are 153 social housing blocks with combustible cladding. Split evenly the £400 million fund would be around £2.6 million per block which would not cover the estimated £13 million the Mount Wise tower block needs.

Until the Prime Minister's announcement, Plymouth Community Homes was set to receive no financial support from Government and would have paused building 220 new homes or 413 refurbishments for the city to pay for the emergency.

Luke Pollard MP recently presented a petition to Parliament, started by Devonport Councillor, Bill Stevens and signed by hundreds of people across Plymouth, including the leader of the

Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn MP calling for the Government to allocate emergency funds for the recladding.

Luke Pollard MP said: “I’m pleased that the Prime Minister has finally listened to communities like Mount Wise who have rightly been asking for Government support to pay for tower blocks to be reclad. This is good news but it should not have taken eleven months for this funding to be made available.

“We have been here before though. After the Grenfell fire, the PM pledged support, and then took it away. What we need to see now is a firm government commitment to funding the full bill of recladding the Mount Wise tower blocks. Not some of it, not part of it, but the entire cost of recladding. I also want to see the timetable for this work to be set out by Ministers for paying for this work so Plymouth Community Homes can get on and reclad this work.

“My party said from day one that Labour would fund this work. On his recent visit to Mount Wise, Jeremy Corbyn reiterated Labour’s support for tower block communities. I am so proud of the response of Mount Wise in the wake of the Grenfell Tower.

"Community campaigners, Devonport’s councillors and local residents have been determined to get the money needed to reclad the Mount Wise tower blocks. I have spoken in the Commons time and time again calling for this funding and I am pleased this looks like a campaign we have won and won together. We now need to get the money from Government and so this work can begin.

“I won’t stop speaking up for the people of Devonport and until the combustible cladding is removed from Lynher, Tamar and Tavy Houses I will continue to demand action and full funding for this work.”

Chance to be a STAR in Stoke Stoke Traders and Residents Association (STAR Association) held their first meeting under the new chairmanship of Andrew Bray on May 9 at The Stoke Inn. The committee of six welcome all residents and traders from the Stoke area to attend these meetings where they can learn about the group’s plans in addition to sharing their own views and ideas.

Priorities were discussed at the meeting which include improving two-way communications with both residents and traders, seeing the CCTV project through to having a fully functioning system join the network and restoring the planters in Devonport Road.

The forthcoming Summer Fun Day, set for Saturday July 21 in The Blockhouse Park and on to Masterman Road, will give the volunteers an ideal opportunity to meet residents and share ideas. The event is running from 11am to 6pm with a full programme of live entertainment in ‘The Blockhouse Park Music Marquee’ and separately on ‘The Street Stage’ in Masterman Road. In addition to the craft stalls there will be a food tent. Stoke Youth and Community Centre will provide light refreshments. Steve Bowen, the former Chairman, is to head a specialist group committed to redevelopment of The Blockhouse Park. Plans will be

available to view at the Fun Day where visitors will be encouraged to share their opinions and ideas.

Andrew is keen to engage with the local traders separately and has the full support of the group to meet business owners.

With regards to the CCTV, following a positive meeting in March with representatives from the police, Plymouth City Council, local Councillors and Police Commissioners Office the committee is hopeful for a positive resolution very soon.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 26 when Plymouth City Council will report back on the progress made.

Many visitors to Stoke Village will have noticed two of the planters suffered damage; one so severely it had to be removed. Currently, plans are underway to have that one replaced and to secure some new plants for all of them. STAR Association is keen to hear from anyone able to maintain the planters; the more the merrier.

The next open meeting will take place on June 13 at The Stoke Inn, Devonport Road, starting at 5.30pm. July’s meeting will be on July 11, again at 5.30pm, following a ‘clean up’ operation of Stoke Village and The Blockhouse Park which will start at 4pm. Everyone living and working in the area is welcome to join the volunteers at 4pm and is encouraged to attend the meeting afterwards. Both are an ideal opportunity to meet their neighbours and help forge a unique Village Community Spirit, whist living within a City.
