Hello and welcome... ….to the December & January edition of Love Saltash

Wow, Saltash certainly knows how to attract a crowd judging by the amazing attendance on Fore Street for the Rememberance Day. It will be great to see as many folk as possible out again for the Christmas Festival, supporting local businesses in Fore Street and enjoying themselves in good company. However, as this edition spans two full months of out and about in Saltash, we have to consider how we feel once the lights and decorations come down. Sometimes its not what we look forward to - rather a painful reminder of those less than perfect family moments and realities. We all have them, no matter how great life looks on the surface; and for some of us

the loss of loved ones is an immense burden to bear at this time of year. For some, Christmas represents the birth of hope into the world in the form of a new born baby. It seems crazy that a tiny fragile figure could bear the weight of all that’s wrong in the world - but hope is like that. Hope rarely makes sense, and often its seeming ineffectiveness against a giant of pain can make us plain angry. Yet in some magical way hope helps strike a match in our own darkness, making a difference in our lives and those around us. The team and I at Love Saltash send you our very warmest wishes for Christmas and the New Year. God Bless

IN BRIEF

scouts christmas

postal service

The Scout Group of Saltash will be organising their annual Christmas Postal Service again starting on November 17 up to December 14, Len Maddock has let us know. He explains, “It will be for inside Saltash Town Address only please and costs 25p per card. Just pop your cards and fee into our Post Boxes at Church Road Stores, Spar Shop Mote Park, Spar Shop Cross Park, Spar Shop New Road , Piglets, The Bookshop, Saltash News all in Fore Street, Polnoon in Callington Road and at Hatt Petrol Station.” This is such a good way to help the Scout family support the community – delivering around 3000 cards every year, and saving you money!

Saltash Football

Legends Saltmill Park is once again the place to be this Christmas Eve as two teams packed full of Saltash football legends go head to head in aid of charity. Defending champions Sam Borthwick & Adam Stiff will manage an Under 30 side against an Over 30 side managed by Stuart Fort and Nathan Holliday. Included in the Under 30s squads are players such as Karl Wesemann, Luke Hurlock, Ryan

Tetley and Nick Dale as well as talented local actor Royce Pierreson who viewers of hit programmes such as “Line of Duty” will be familiar with. Up against them in the Over 30s side are some true giants of the local game in the likes of Steve Bishop, Max Parfitt, Adam Keith, Andrew Hatch, Tony Jane & Scott Wellington. In addition to the main game, during the halftime interval there will be childrens games and the visit of a certain gentlemen dressed in red with a white beard who will hand out gifts to the children taking part kindly donated by Crash Repair Centre, Saltash.

In addition to Kits4Causes, a charity that collects unwanted football equipment and distributes it to social development projects around the world, the event will be supporting the Stroke Association and local lad, Andrew Beaver, a two year old in desperate need of a disability pushchair enabling him to sit up and see the world. In addition to raising money players, officials and supporters are invited to donate any old football or other sports equipment for Kits4Causes. Old school uniform donations are also welcome. The game kicks-off at 12 noon on Christmas Eve and everyone involved would welcome as much support as possible on the day. After the event the participants will head to Saltash Social club where spectators are welcome to join them and the fundraising will continue.

bunting

to stay

274 local residents signed a petition and presented it to the Town Council recently to request that the bunting along the Waterside be allowed to remain. The Town and Waterfront Warden reported to a committee that in recent storms the bunting sustained very little damage, and he had only needed to replace 50 bulbs on the lights and extra ties on some of the flags. The Council resolved to allow the bunting to stay as an experiment to see how long it would last and to authorise repairs or replacements, or to deal with any health and safety issues out of council budget. They will review the situation in Easter 2019.

IN BRIEF A big draw with a little hand!

LANDULPh under 5’s draw

the winning ticket

The BIG AUTUMN RAFFLE was a great success, raising £865 for Landulph Pre-school. Fundraising is a key part of keeping the preschool operational and up-to-date with access to great IT equipment, excursions, crafting and art materials, books, toys and learning materials that support early years education. The committee and pre-school team are very creative with their fundraising and host a number of events including the very popular annual band night (date for your diary - Whisky Falls will be playing on Friday 22nd February at Landulph Memorial Hall), village treasure hunts with tea and cakes, and village discos. This year they decided to Drawing the winning ticket!

hold a raffle, but not just any raffle. This year they went BIG and offered a top prize of £500 cash! The lucky winner of the top prize was Sam Ramsay, who works at local business Pentillie Castle. Landulph Under Fives is a committee-led preschool serving the communities on the outskirts of Saltash, including Landulph, Cargreen, Botus Fleming, Hatt, St.Mellion and St.Dominick. It has been operating successfully for more than 40 years, and ensures the children (and young families) of the local parishes have a friendly, engaging and supportive space in which to start their early years education. Many children go on to Landulph School and so truly benefit from the interaction with their local peers and the community from an early age. The pre-school operates during term-time from 9 until 4pm. It welcomes all children from two to five years old from Saltash and surrounding areas, and currently has spaces in all sessions. Fluffy Pigs

raise money

for RNLI

Saltash RNLI Volunteer Fundraising Committee recently held a fun event at the Burraton Community Centre. Various businesses in Saltash sponsored a race and everyone had great fun cheering on their chosen ‘fluffy pig’. Many thanks to the Coop who donated the proceeds from their meat raffle and the sponsors: Noakes, Habermehl and Kerr, DB Autos, KCC Builders, Carlton Plastics, Julian Hall Builders and OTUS. A grand total of £913 was raised for the RNLI.

Invictus Trust benefits from mad

runner

Tina Parker handed over the monies she raised for the Invictus Trust to Steve Cowburn, one

of the trust’s founders, in typical Just Be good humour and fashion. Steve had created a giant wine bottle in place of the traditional big cheque, and Tina knew the only way to pose! The fantastic news is that over £2500 was raised by Tina’s supporters for the charity that supports teenagers in Cornwall with mental health issues.

YFOROCHARITY GA

A yoga class run by local resident Jacqueline Smithies raised a whopping £250 for the Childrens Hospice SW recently by organising a yoga on the beach event (when the weather was warmer!) The event itself raised £120 and the rest of the money was collected through the kind donations of members of the class and friends. Jackie is planning a further sponsored yoga on the beach in the Spring for CHSW. For further information or if yoga is something you might enjoy, please contact Jackie on 07867857980

ANXIETY IS A DIRTY UGLY LIAR! Article by Andy Rance

Anxiety is that quiet voice that tells you ‘you can’t’ when you can - it tells you you’re ugly, that no one really likes you, that you’re worthless, that you’re unlikeable! Like most liars, once they’ve been found out they usually disappear, so if your anxiety is lying to you, check it out with someone you trust, or come and chat to one of us lot at Livewire! Anxiety holds more people prisoner than anything else, real freedom comes from realising just what a dirty, ugly liar anxiety is. Problematic anxiety has become almost an epidemic amongst young people (and many adults too), however anxiety is a normal emotion that we all experience, such as in the run up to exams or a job interview, however. When anxiety becomes much more severe, this feeling can take over and begin to interfere with everyday life and in some cases lead to severe mental health issues. At Livewire we are starting some targeted and focused work with young people experiencing problematic anxiety issues. This might include counselling, it might include youth worker one to

one or group support, or even the use of music lessons and music-based opportunities. It’s really important to recognise that problematic anxiety is not always something a person can control, sometimes family members, friends, teachers etc can struggle when dealing with someone with complex anxiety needs - telling a person to ‘pull your self together’ or ‘just get on with it isn’t helpful. Often there are underlying issues which lead to problematic anxiety significant negative life events for example. However, there is no clear trigger. At Livewire, we believe it is crucial to try and identify with the young person what may be triggering their anxiety and then look for solutions. Over the next few months we will be undertaking a mapping exercise to establish just how many young people we are in contact with who are experiencing anxiety issues and establish if it’s mild, moderate or severe. We will then work out a programme for that individual young person and hopefully support them into living an anxiety free life.

WAR HERO MARK visits st stephens school Article by Kaye Bonner Information provided by Steph Thompson

St Stephens School recently welcomed local triple amputee war hero Mark Ormrod. Mark is a remarkable family man, inspirational speaker and fundraiser who is bursting with inspiration. On Christmas Eve 2007, whilst on patrol in Afghanistan, Mark stepped onto an explosive device in Helmand Provence. Despite suffering such a trauma, Mark is now an award-winning writer and an elite sports coach to other amputees, a good friend of Prince Harry and an athlete at the recent Invictus Games. He was warmly welcomed at St Stephens’ morning assembly, to open their new Excel 1 building, providing the school with three extra classrooms, a music room, and a studio. Mark spoke of his

passion to encourage education and sports in children from an early age, focussing on perseverance and a ‘never give up’ motto The children fired off some great questions. One child asking Mark how he cooked sausages, another did he see the bomb, and another, how he moved his arms? In answer to another question, Mark said his medals were very heavy and that they weighed too much in his case at the airport. Thanks go to Mrs Goodman for organising Mark’s visit and to Mrs Connors, the school’s cook, who suggested the building’s name, and delivered a delicious cream tea. Mark is hoping to visit the school again one day to share in future successes and we can get involved too by visiting www.easyfundraising. org.uk/causes/ ststephenssaltash

student news Mixing up the generations has been in the news recently as a way to fend off loneliness, depression and age-related illnesses. So, if listening to an ever-growing list of aches and pains from your nearest and dearest is getting you down, Cornwall College Saltash is a great destination to cheer you up! And whilst hanging around younger people’s love of fun is a definite tonic for the rest of us, likewise meeting older people regularly is a great boost to self esteem and confidence building for your typical self-conscious young adult. The college has flung its doors wide open – not only for those considering trying something different – short courses, access to university, or vocational skills. It is also a space where you can just pop in for a bit of r&r throughout the week. The Dynnargh Restaurant is now so popular with the public, you need to book in advance. Meals are expertly prepared by students under the supervision of their tutors, and diners are giving students a chance to hone their skills in all aspects of hospitality. The food is beautifully presented and very tasty and everything on the menu is under £5. The College even boasts an AA Highly Commended Rosette and is gold accredited as a centre of excellence for patisserie, confectionery, food and beverage, fish and shellfish. Once you have enjoyed going back to college,

31

even just for the food, you can take yourself off to the training salons to experience everything from hair styling and colouring, to waxing, tanning. nail enhancements, and full body pampering treatments and massages. The price list is reflective of the fact that students are doing the treatments under supervision and being assessed at the same time. It’s a great way of helping to build students’ confidence, and you get fantastic service and lovely professional products to use. If stepping over the threshold of Cornwall College Saltash has broken down any of those age-related barriers that we sometimes feel, there is nothing to stop you returning to education, or even bringing along the family. The catering department run very successful cookery schools for younger children, and there is an excellent nursery on site for pre-schoolers. The next Advice Event is on Saturday 19 January from 10am to 12. There are solutions for everything from funding to transport to childcare to filling in an application. Even if its just a very first step, it’s a positive one to beating the winter blues. To book lunch in the restaurant, please call 850222. sports news Ever thought that basketball could have a positive effect on both your life and the lives of others? Well, by joining Unity Through Sport you can make a real difference to those less fortunate than yourself, whilst integrating with your local community. Founded by Troy Woodhouse, Ben Byrne and Madelaine Doyle, Unity Through Sport has been putting smiles on people’s faces since 2016. The fresh, inclusive Unity Through Basketball sessions have begun running at Saltash.net community school and are open to all parents and children keen to get involved. By interacting with others, you have the chance to get out of your comfort zone and formulate new relationships with members of the surrounding community. You also have the fantastic opportunity to learn the game accordingly and acquire new skills by receiving firsthand coaching from experienced players. If the unquestionable health benefits weren’t encouraging enough, Unity Through Basketball also holds competitive charity events to ramp up the energy and raise money for worthy causes requiring society input. With people’s contribution, the organisation has already raised a noteworthy £8,400 for Brain Tumour Research! And this is only the beginning; with support from the Saltash community, you could help change the lives of others. Why not join the Unity family and get active? Take a positive step in your life. Support those in need, and join the movement towards a healthier lifestyle.

You really need a Power of Attorney!

A lasting power of attorney is a legal document, in which you appoint another person (or persons) to manage your affairs, if you have lost the capacity to do so and this doesn’t just affect the elderly. There are two types of Lasting power of attorney (LPA), one enables your appointed attorney(s) to deal with property and financial affairs - and the other enables your appointed attorney to deal with your health and welfare issues. What happens if I do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney? Close friends and family (including your spouse) do not automatically have the

right to take over. The Office of the Public Guardian will appoint a Deputy to act on your behalf. This process takes time and is expensive, which may mean that bills cannot be paid and affairs cannot be looked after. Old age is the most common cause of mental incapacity, but incapacity may exist in other circumstances and is not dependant upon age or other f` oreseeable' circumstances. A lasting power of attorney is just as important as a will! Contact ANITA HUTT LL.B(Hons) MSWW 01579 344433 to arrange a home visit now.

PORT ELIOT FIREWORK DISPLAY Article by Katie Sanghera

Port Eliot House and Gardens in Saint Germans hosted a fireworks display to celebrate Bonfire Night on November 5th. The event was held in front of the grand Port Eliot house where people of all ages gathered before the blazing bonfire. The gates opened at 6:30pm for those who wanted to grab a bite to eat, a warming drink and to enjoy the live music from Vince Lee and the Big Combo. The food stall was obviously a big hit and boasted queues across the whole venue. It offered hotdogs and jacket potatoes with various toppings at a very reasonable price. At the drinks tent, the choice of

mulled wine amongst other beverages hinted at the beginnings of the festive period. The live music was a lovely touch, creating a buzzing atmosphere before the firework display, which began at 8:30pm. The fireworks themselves were certainly the highlight of the evening and impressed the crowd with a range of magical and show-stopping explosives. The fireworks illuminated the vast Port Eliot grounds and the impressive bonfire burning within them. Port Eliot certainly hosted one of the more enjoyable Bonfire Night events this year. Paying ÂŁ5 for a ticket was worth being able to enjoy the scenic surroundings, a less densely packed crowd and a most wonderful array of fireworks.

Cross Country races launch saltash.net’s new House competition

Saltash.net students from Year 7, 8 and 9, as well as friends from Landulph Primary School, recently showed fantastic tenacity and motivation to complete the saltash.net Cross Country course. The Cross Country competition saw students compete in the first event of a multi- sport yearlong inter House tournament, culminating at Sports Day in July, following rugby, football and netball tournaments throughout the year. As has become tradition, students from Landulph Primary School joined saltash.net’s Year 7 run, and competed superbly, with some finishing in the top 10 of the Year 7 race. All podium finishers were presented with a trophy in a post-run presentation. The stand out performance of the day was from Year 7’s Hollie Reid, who recorded the fastest time of all year groups that ran, with an incredible 9.42. A fantastic performance from a Year 7 student Hollie is one to watch for the future! Glanville have taken an early lead in the House competition, amassing a fantastic 380 points across the three year groups, followed closely by Brunel with 360. Lynher and Tamar currently have 310 and 300 points respectively, with all still to

The Year 8 winners play for. Speaking at the end of the competition, Head of PE, Mr Hawkins, was delighted with the efforts of each year group. “Another year and another excellent Cross Country event at saltash.net. Turnout for the races was fantastic, and the competition could not have been such a success without the great help of saltash.net’s Year 10 Sports Leaders, who marshalled the course really well. “A number of students showed real tenacity and motivation to finish the course, supported and encouraged all the way by their peers. Well done to all who took part today and well done to House Glanville who are the first Cross Country House Champions!” he said. The Year 9 winners

Sporting Achievements at Saltash We have had a great start to the Saltash sporting year, across a range of year groups. One example is the Year 10 rugby team. Captain Tom Hollyman says “all the team have played excellently so far”. However some players to look out for are Henry Curtis, Josh Bennett and Oliver Crawford, according to coach Mr Feldwick. The team started the County Cup with a home win against Newquay Treviglas 25-17. Spectators were impressed by the connection and competitive side of the boys, which promises great things. On the development front, girls’ rugby is now thriving with a weekly practice and huge interest. We look forward to seeing the girls in competitive action soon! Also doing well are the netball teams, where last year 3 year groups reached the east county final. They have started greatly this year, too, with some close matches and some big wins. The teams vary

by Corlissa Waites

throughout the years with committed players who say “it’s fun, challenging and a great experience”. Football for both boys and girls continues to thrive. We have teams in every age group and have enjoyed plenty of county successes. Our current Under 15 boys, led by Jensen Bryan, have reached the last 3 county finals, winning the last two, and the Under 16 girls, led by Molly Gill, have won the county competition more than any other school and are the current county champions. We actively encourage students of all abilities to play football each week with both boys and girls enjoying a weekly training session after school on our all-weather pitch. We hope for more brilliant success this year. Sports at Saltash is both highly competitive and open to all abilities - a definite success story!

Hate Crime Awareness Workshop by Isobel Whittam and Jas Sutton

Saltash Community School is one of several schools which participated in the Hate Crime awareness workshops in South East Cornwall for Years 8 and 9. The aim of the two hour session was to raise awareness of hate crime and to explain the different forms it can take. The workshop started with an explanation of hate crime and a discussion about different minority groups. This was followed by an interactive task where the students re-enacted what it was like to flee a country. This was to help students try to understand and empathise with people who may have

had to experience this. In the final section of the session a guest speaker talked to the students about how she had been attacked because of her religion. The session was very informative and the workshop really engaged the students in this important issue. Mrs Gue, who organised the event, said, “I feel we understood more about an issue that can sometimes seem like it only applies to big city areas but which is relevant to all young people today. Knowing more about how people from other backgrounds feel is a useful life lesson.” is a mixture of familiar faces and some new keen actors. With the original songs and great costumes, we are all very excited to see the school’s take on the musical which is being shown in February. Don’t forget to watch the school website for more updates on when the tickets go on sale. We hope to see you all there!

READING: A HOBBY FOR LIFE

culture news

45

It’s always a pleasant surprise to see how our neck of the woods attracts so many famous names in the literary and artistic world. Recently we were lucky enough to catch Joanna Trollope, author of over twenty best selling novels, in conversation at Calstock Arts. Joanna writes extensively about the culture she is from – well healed, middle England, but with a keen eye for what lies underneath. As she puts it, “the veneer of civilised behaviour on the middle classes is paper thin.” She read aloud from her latest book, “An Unsuitable Match”, a delightful exchange between its main character Rose Woodrow, a divorcee in her mid-sixties, and an old acquaintance who has reappeared in her life: “I’ve never felt this way about anyone… I love you.” “But I’m 64. I’m a Grandmother!” The acquaintance continues, “I’ve never done this before. I desperately, really desperately want to marry you.” And, Joanna interjects, “This is where the children come in.” “We’re not picking on you Mum, we’re just worried!” Joanna qualifies her observations with charming candour, “The great aim of my books is to get conversation going. Money and family relationships are recurring themes, as they are in life. Most readers are passionately in favour of Rose’s right to a new relationship, but less passionate about the idea of one of their own parents leaving money to the children of their new partner.” Joanna’s keen observational skills apply to marital relationships too. “Good marriages – admiration and respect for each other’s principles, livelihood and attitude are less sensational than romantic

love which turns the pages of most English novels with their focus on trouble, dilemma and difficulty.” Joanna’s passion for writing is amplified by her campaigns to protect local libraries from closure. She believes that they offer warm, safe spaces for aspirational thinking, “something that is terribly important in a fractured society”. And the novel, she believes, has a vital role in helping us learn about the world and survive our own emotional rollercoasters by connecting to characters who are suffering similarly. In a defence of her trade shared by her predecessor, Jane Austen, Joanna explains that the novel tells us about humanity, showing us, “in every conceivable way what we could only learn by living life itself.” If you need an excuse to pick up that book…..

Gavin leading the class

just keep moving! Traditionally, if we saw a loved one get out of breath, we’d make them sit down and take it easy. However, there is a group in Saltash who are determined to show fellow sufferers that gentle exercise is not only do-able for those diagnosed with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but it’s actually good for you. Saltash Breathers were initiated and approved by Saltash Health Centre in 2011 and meet weekly to provide support and tailored breathing and physical exercise from a qualified trainer. Members pay just £3 to cover the cost of the studio at Saltash Leisure Centre, with support from Gavin, their trainer. Gavin explained that the exercise is first and foremost fun, and perfect for those who are unable to exercise well. It includes basic functions like getting up from seating, as well as moves to improve posture and prevent hunching over. There is also a lot of encouragement, tips and hints to keep the motivation going and carry on exercising at home.

Despite bodies growing older, and, as one wag at the group explained, “being no bloody good”, the exercise is working. “A good laugh clears the lungs anyway,” retorted one of the group’s amateur comedians (there are a few apparently), “We don’t take ourselves too seriously.” “Living with severe asthma can mean you don’t get out much as you become a bit afraid of having an attack in public” said one member. “I didn’t realise how lonely I was before coming here. It’s so good to be able to laugh and chat together without a fear of being a burden on my loved ones.” The group is open to all as well as taking referrals through a special course run by both Saltash surgeries. It meets on Tuesdays from 1.30-3pm at the Leisure Centre and depends entirely on donations to keep going (there is a small raffle each week which adds a bit of excitement.) More details from either Gordon Richards on 842424 or Ron Chappell 932171.

ART news The 2019 exhibitions programme begins with a celebration of watercolours, featuring three amateur groups that meet regularly at Ashtorre Rock: Ashtorre Watercolour Group, Plymouth Watercolour Society and, first, Tamar Art Group.

art at ashtorre

Watercolour is sometimes seen as the poor relation of the painting mediums, less serious than big brothers, oil and acrylic, but it can be subtle and delicate. In the hands of a good painter, it can be strong and vibrant, too. But it is far from easy to master; oils and acrylics can be pushed around, wiped off and painted over, whilst watercolour marks need to be committed from the start; no rubbing out or covering up.

Comment by John Forster As skills increase, the painter becomes able to make confident marks that run, bleed, dry in just the right way to create the intended effect. If tradition is maintained most of us will leave Santa a raw carrot, possibly a mince pie, and to pair alongside, a small glass of sherry (hopefully not left over from last Christmas), but which sherry? Sherry is an incredibly versatile drink and the range of styles offer something to accompany all foods, although raw carrot may not be the go to choice for most versions of this increasingly trendy tipple. Let’s have a look at a few sherries and what we could pair with them. Styles range from super dry to sticky and deliciously sweet. The driest styles are Fino and Manzanilla, made from the Palomino grape. Picked and fermented as with any other white wine and then fortified by the addition of grape spirit, to a strength of around 15%. The sherry is then aged under a yeast Flor in barrel. This prevents oxidisation and gives a distinct ‘yeasty style for these dry sherries. For the ammontillado, oloroso (dry to medium) and the delicious sweet sherry made from Pedro Ximinez grape... the flor fades and the wine is open to a controlled oxidisation to give complex nutty flavours. The Gonzalez Byass Tio Pepe (pictured right) is a really excellent example of dry style fino. It is

readily available in all supermarkets, and incredibly good value at around £12 per 75cl bottle. Try chilled fino and manzanilla sherries with tasty fish dishes like sardines or mackerel, smoked salmon, it’s great with canapés and starters on Christmas Day! Some great examples of other styles: La Concha Amontillado Sherry, £10 per 75cl: pair this with lighter chicken dishes, patés, and all forms of tapas. Williams & Humbert 12-Year-Old Oloroso Sherry, £9 per 37.5cl: goes brilliantly with game such as pheasant. Also pairs well with the Christmas turkey. Fernando de Castilla classic Pedro Ximinez, £20 per 75cl, is simply Christmas in a glass. Serve as a dessert wine or for pure indulgent pleasure pour over a premium Cornish vanilla ice cream! As served at Just Be… heavenly! And finally as a real seasonal treat: the deep nutty and incredibly complex Fernando de Castilla Antique Palo Cortado, £30 per 50cl, would, in my humble opinion, be Santa’s favourite. Guaranteeing his return year after year! Great with Charcuterie and cheese or simply wonderful just on it’s own! It will even make the raw carrot taste delicious!

GOOD NEWS FROM JENNIFER’s With the recent media coverage of the global plastic crisis, Jennifer's is introducing a reusable coffee cup and replacing single use coffee cups with compostable ones. The reusable cup is made from bamboo fibre. Bamboo is great because it’s a very fast-growing material, making it easier to avoid deforestation in the regions where it’s grown, it requires no fertilizer and self-regenerates from its own roots, so it doesn't need to be replanted. The cups are also biodegradable and are BPA and phthalate-free. The silicone lid and sleeve are not, however, biodegradable, but this is something we are looking to implement when available. There’s nothing wrong with using paper cups, and there will be times where carrying around a reusable cup made out of bamboo fibre just isn’t possible, and that’s completely fine. But where possible and convenient, we would love to see our regulars carry these cups around, leading the way to a greener Saltash. We love these cups, and our hope is you will too. When you buy one of our bamboo cups, you will see that Jennifer’s supports Animals Asia. We will donate 50p from every sale of the reusable cup to Animals Asia, and every time you come back for a refill using the bamboo cup we will donate 20p. As encouragement to use the bamboo cup we have reduced the cost of a takeaway coffee to £1.30 a saving of 50p per coffee! The single

use compostable cup takeaway price is £1.80. The bamboo cup is priced at £6.50 and you get a free cup of coffee with the purchase. Jennifer’s is launching a vegetarian and vegan menu which is available from November. We hope that customers will try the new dishes and look out for our vegan cakes. We offer soya milk and oat milk as an alternative to cow milk, so you can enjoy our excellent dairy free coffee. More information at www.animalsasia.org

69 Members of the Saltash Regatta Committee with their awards

SALTASH REGATTA wins big! Primary Times Readers were quizzed over their favourite family attractions – places that they can visit for a full day out and for a half day out; indoor play centre; outdoor play centre; party venue/entertainer; free local family event; local fair, show or festival; best value of money attraction and the readers also chose an overall winner. One tightly fought-for category was that of favourite Local Fair, Show or Festival and it was certainly interesting to read the broad spectrum of answers. The entertaining events and family orientated activities at the Saltash Regatta and Waterside Festival enabled it to be chosen as the favourite Local Fair, Show or Festival for 2018. The Saltash Regatta and Waterside Festival also won a new award introduced for 2018, that of favourite Free Local Family Event. Karen Lilley said, “On behalf of the Regatta Committee, we are so delighted and proud to be receiving these awards. In the main, this event is run by volunteers who need to fund raise, plan

and deliver a two-day festival, every year. It can be an exhausting task! Recognition such as this, (that was completely unexpected), is inspiring and very gratifying. It gives us the drive to push forward to ensure our community enjoys many family Regattas for years to come. Thank you to everyone for all your votes and for all the hard work and support that is shown by everyone involved. A special thanks to our sponsors and stall holders, who we rely on to make this event a reality.” Linda Edwards, Publishing Editor at Primary Times said: “We are so grateful to our readers for their valued contribution to our Reader Star Awards. The results are incredibly insightful which allows us to take a glimpse into the minds of local people, discovering what the children enjoy most. We would like to applaud all the individual winners and runners-up of each category and congratulate them on their success”.
