Hello and welcome... ....to Love Saltash. I’m hoping you enjoy leafing through the pages of this edition with a quiet cuppa. One of the best parts of my job is meeting people, and this edition is full of some really interesting stories from Saltash folk who can inspire and enthuse us. Everyone knows the adage, from little acorns grow mighty oaks; and these stories are full of the potential and promise of growth. Our own organisation is also a good example of the acorn principle. Most of you know that Cornerstone Vision publishes Love Saltash from the ground floor of a converted home in the Peverell area of Plymouth. Our little team has been producing community papers for over ten years now. Its fast paced, absorbing, and

stressful work - constantly maintaining deadlines, researching stories and selling adverts to pay for it all. I’d like to thank this handful of superheroes for all their hard work in making sure you get your copy of Love Saltash each month. I’d also like to thank the brilliant team of local contributors who sniff out the best stories to keep you glued to the page; the enthusiasts who put the magazine through your letterbox trudging up and down hills without a grumble; and finally our amazing businesses, community groups and organisations, who pay to advertise in Love Saltash. Without them believing in us, none of the above would be possible, and we wish them the very best in all their endeavours.

VOLUNTEER

OPPORTUNITIES

Between now until the end of September, volunteers can help prune, tidy and maintain a number of areas throughout the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including the Tamar Trails near Gulworthy, Wacker Quay in the Lynher area and the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail. All tools, refreshments and lunch are provided. Dave Readman, coordinator of the Valley Volunteer scheme, says, “We have a great team of dedicated volunteers who join us regularly to help out, but we’re always grateful for a few extra pairs of hands!” Dave continues, “This year we have introduced a number of training days, as a way of giving something back to our volunteers, providing them with practical skills that they can use while working with us or elsewhere.” Training days include scythe use and sharpening, strimmer use and maintenance, firewood splitting and stacking, summer tree identification, step building and fencing. For details of the programme, or for further information, please contact Dave Readman, 07410 411440, dreadman@tamarvalley.org.uk, or visit www.tamarvalley.org.uk and click on Events.

Tudor Garden

Gains Grant

The Tudor style garden behind the town’s oldest domestic residence, the medieval Mary Newman’s Cottage, is to be further enhanced by means of a grant. The raised flower and vegetable beds in their

wood surrounds are in need of restoration and Cornwall Community Fund has awarded the Tamar Protection Society, who maintain the house and garden, £858 for this purpose. The house and garden are open to the public at weekends free of charge, though donations are appreciated, and teas are available on the terrace with its garden and river views.

The 2018 World Cup

Impact on the

Workplace

The world cup is upon us! Here’s some advice for employers courtesy of Tamar HR. Making adjustments to accommodate the World Cup may be welcomed by Companies to uphold morale and employee relations It might be suitable to consider some extra provisions for staff wanting to watch games during the tournament. These may include; taking time off or allowing staff extra breaks throughout the day to watch particular games which have significance. Communication between employees and employers is key. Whilst it might not be possible to “shut down” or completely stop operations, in the interest of employee relations it might be prudent to consider allowing staff to switch shifts or allow for adjusted hours to allow staff to watch games. This could mean employees coming in a little later or finishing a little earlier and making up the lost time at the start or end of a day. Organisations may also consider allowing a television or radio to be on in the workplace. Employers that allow access to a television in the workplace are advised to consider a different perk to those who do not wish to watch fixtures so they do not feel disadvantaged.

NEW POST OFFICE

OPENS

Saltash bucked the trend by opening a new post office recently. The new Post Office is at Church Road Stores in Gordon Court, Saltash and is run by Viney Puveendra. It’s open seven days a week between 7am and 10pm and was created as part of a network modernisation programme.

University professor offers students guidance

Deputy Headteacher and Safeguarding Lead at saltash.net, who stressed the importance of the guidance Professor Phippen delivered. “Almost all members of our school community use the internet virtually every day both in and out of school but the penalties for using it irresponsibly, socially, emotionally and even financially can be huge. Andy Phippen has a very down to earth, yet pragmatic approach and we thought it was important that the students got to hear some of the things that can go wrong if we don’t use it responsibly or, as importantly if we are affected by it being misused by others,” Mr Skelton said. “We’re looking forward to developing our relationship with Professor Phippen further over the next year to assist us in ensuring all of our students are cybersafe and cybersmart,” he added.

Saltash.net community school was delighted to welcome Professor Andy Phippen, Professor of Social Responsibility in IT at the University of Plymouth, into school shortly before half term to talk to the students about issues that young people face online. Professor Phippen has worked on social issues connected to IT for 15 years, advises and lobbies government around the issues and regularly speaks at schools on issues of internet safety and social responsibility in IT. Professor Phippen presented to Years 7 to 10, focusing on a wide range of issues affecting internet safety, including age restrictions on games and abusive behaviour on social media platforms. The sessions were engaging and informative, and encouraged students (and teachers!) in attendance to get involved and consider online safety issues. Professor Phippen has already suggested working with the students again, to run workshops and work with the Sixth Formers. Saltash.net students clearly valued the sessions, with one noting that, “It was nice to know that people cared about keeping us safe online.” The visit was organised by Mr Jeremy Skelton,

Derriford service

Saltash Community Enterprises PL12 is disappointed to announce the discontinuation of the Derriford bus service. Despite running the service six times a day, five times a week over the last 18 months, it has made a continual loss and the funds cannot sustain the service any longer. Community Enterprises PL12 is not a government run organisation, but a community interest company which depends on the services on offer being self sustaining. Over the last six months, they had been advertising the fact that the service hadn’t received enough support to keep it going, so unfortunately it has become a case of ‘use it or lose it’. They are aware this doesn’t help the regulars who work at the hospital, who do use the service so the CIC are asking those who read Love Saltash to bring any new ideas on how to make the service work to the table. They would be interested in trying a new approach, however it must be viable and sustainable, even as a ‘break even’ project.

ST STEPHEN’S SAYS:

SAVE OUR OCEANS

community NEWS Sir David Attenborough’s plea and global concerns about the worrying and increasingly dangerous ‘plastic situation’ has concerned all the children and staff at St Stephens School in Saltash. They were horrified at the crisis our oceans face and have begun their own journey campaigning against the use of single use plastics. Their aim is to raise even further awareness about the immense damage that plastic is causing our planet, not only within their school, but in the local community too, and furthermore, the impact that single use plastics have on marine and wildlife which are dependent on the world’s seas and oceans. Their research has been impressively staggering with one child stating, “500 billion plastic bags are used annually around the world and the majority end up in our oceans, where they are mistaken for food. When an animal eats them, it either suffocates or dies of starvation.” This was furthered by another child who added, “There are nearly six trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans (creating a plastic graveyard the size of Australia), and if we continue to use plastics as we do, by 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than stars in the Milky Way.” The children made their own awareness video “Save our Oceans”, thus highlighting the severity of the problem, and it is their aim to encourage people to stop and think about how we can all help protect our oceans and planet. The video has already reached an astounding 11,000 views on You Tube, stretching out as far as Australia, Canada and Tokyo; however, the children hope that it will continue to be shared to spread their important message. In support of their fight against plastics, St Stephens School have banned the use of plastic bottles, straws and cling film at their school and hope to reduce the use of other plastics in the

11

upcoming year. Furthermore, they are creating several art installations, which demonstrate the impact of plastic pollution. On Friday 8 June, every member of the school wore BLUE in rejoicing of the oceans on World Oceans Day and they are hoping to participate in a whole school beach clean with the support of parents and the local community. The children from St Stephens Primary School are passionate about their campaign stating, “It’s not too late, if everyone does their bit to reduce the amount of single use plastic they use, the seas and oceans can be saved. Please help to save our oceans!” The school is currently involved with the Surfers Against Sewage project “Plastic Free Schools”. The children in Key Stage 2 have been innovative and written letters to the Government from the perspective of sea creatures. These letters have been sent to the Environmental Secretary demonstrating the children’s passion for a plastic free future. Leila Mckenna (Year 5 Teacher) said that, ‘the project has affected the children across the school. In our regular assemblies, we have discussed the impact plastic has on the world and our future. Even the youngest children have made posters calling for a “stop to plastic in our seas’’. The children have contacted their school dinner provider: Chartwells, and requested to have their lunches provided in paper bags rather than cling film. Leila Mckenna added, ‘We are passionate about this project and are continuously looking for ways to further reduce our plastic footprint’. You can watch their moving clip on You Tube by visiting youtu.be/3i9-ULUklVo. I watched this video and it really does make you ‘stop and think’. We, at Love Saltash, wish all the children and staff every success in their proposed almost ‘plastic free’ school!

LIFE ON THE RIVER THE RIVER...

In 936AD King Athelstan drew a boundary at the Tamar between Wessex and Cornwall and the river still forms most of the boundary today. The river is part of Cornwall, so if you are on or in the Tamar you are still in Cornwall until you reach the Devon bank.

WALKING FOR SPIRITUAL HEALTH

Article by Tim Parkman

I love golf. And I know some people say that it is just a good walk ruined by hitting a ball (or trying to). I don’t see it like that, I enjoy the combination of the walk and the tactical element (in which I could do with some prayer or coaching!) of getting the ball into the hole, or at least somewhere near it. It is that combining of two elements that sometimes makes things a lot more different than we expect, that is why the church is combining two elements together of praying and walking in a new initiative for Saltash. Over the next year we are going to be walking around the town after the service on the third Sunday of the

month to pray for the homes, businesses, schools, and organisations that we pass. In the later part of the year there will be plans to leave little painted stones around the areas we have walked, just as a reminder that we have been in an area and have prayed. We will also be contacting the groups and businesses we pass to ask if there is anything specific we can pray for. You may want to contact us, you may want to stop and chat to us, you may just want to ignore us and hope we go away, any of the above is fine. Our hope is that over the next year or so we will have prayer walked the whole of Saltash and been able to connect with lots of different people, no prayer request is too small or too big. If you do see us out an about, why not stop us and say hello.

Saltash student shines at College Star Awards Students from the Cornwall College Group has been recognised for their outstanding achievements at this year’s Student STAR Awards. The categories for the awards are based on the College’s values: Can do, Caring, Celebrating, Consistent, Connected, Courageous and Creative. Each category saw three candidates shortlisted from hundreds of nominations, with the winners receiving a trophy and the runners-up a certificate of commendation. The Consistent award went to 19 year old ZoeJade Hallett, a Professional Cookery student from Cornwall College Saltash. Zoe said: “It feels great to win the Consistent award and I really didn’t expect it. Three years ago I started cooking, that was when I first realised that I wanted to be a chef. My first cookery lessons at school inspired me to continue onto Cornwall College Saltash, where I am lucky enough to be working in a refurbished restaurant and professional kitchen.” Zoe’s tutor at the Saltash campus Chris Penk

describes her as “inspirational”. “Zoe pushes herself all the time and she is great at supporting other students. The STAR Awards give us a chance to celebrate her achievements and give a reward back to someone who works so hard, which is just amazing.” Chris explained. Principal and Chief Executive for The Cornwall College Group Raoul Humphreys said of the winners and runners up, “While every student’s story is unique, they all share some important traits, those of commitment, endeavour and character. You will hear stories of students blossoming through their studies, shrinking violets transforming into confident and engaging members of the community. “But the roots of their success are found in the support provided by their families, friends and the incredible staff at The Cornwall College Group. Many of our winners have said they would not be here this evening without the unrivalled support and dedication of their tutors.”

DofE teaches the Re

Article By Tommy Williams, SOAC Young Leader

If you thought the Duke of Edinburgh award was just walking – think again! You will, of course get a chance to trek through some of our most amazing outdoor spaces, even camping out under the stars – an unforgettable experience; but there is so much more to the DofE scheme than that! At the awards ceremony for 2017, one of our leaders started with a presentation in which she highlighted just how much effort, enthusiasm and commitment our participants have put in to their DofE sections. The young people gave over 320 hours of their time to the community through volunteering and walked over 1400km on expeditions - all in just one year! Our participants have also

developed themselves by learning new skills like art, cooking and acting, as well as taking part in physical activities such as rugby, gym work and football. Every young person in last year’s Bronze and Silver groups passed their award and the young people present collected a badge and certificate from our special guest Councillor Hilary Frank. Current Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) participants have described DofE as being an invaluable experience, teaching them life skills, resilience and how to stay properly committed to a project with a huge reward at the end. The Saltash Open Award Centre (SOAC) are recruiting this year for a new Bronze group to start in September 2018. To

join, you must turn 14 before Easter 2019. If you are older and would like to complete your Gold award, SOAC are also looking to start a Gold group. To complete your Gold you must be over 16 and under 25, and have previously completed your Bronze and Silver. There are three main sections to complete for the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards: Skill, Physical and Volunteering. Completing them is simple; spend (on average) an hour a week working on each section. The time you spend on each section will slowly increase as you work your way up through the levels, starting with a 6-month section and two 3-month sections for your Bronze award. Alongside this, you will go out on expedition and on a practice expedition. Don’t worry about kit, you can borrow almost all of it from SOAC! As a group, SOAC meet fortnightly on a Tuesday

evening from 7:30 to 9:00pm. These sessions are always good fun and you will learn all sorts of new skills such as navigation and first aid, helping you to successfully pass each level. DofE is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, learn new things and then, after all the fun you have doing the awards, it looks great on your CV as well! What’s not to like? To find out more information, ask any questions or get a feel for how the sessions are run, please join us for an open evening on Tuesday 17 July from 7:00 to 7:30pm at The Core Youth Centre, Church Road, Saltash PL12 4AF (on the Saltash College campus). Questions? Please email us at saltashdofe@ outlook.com or visit our websitewww.saltashdofe. wordpress.com, where you can also have a look around and see the things we get up to. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Livewire Youth Project’s new mental health service for young people, ‘Heart n’ Soul’, is now up and running. With generous grant funding of £80,000 from Global’s ‘Make Some Noise’, the Saltash Waterside based charity is providing an on-site mental health worker for two years, with the intention of making this a permanent service. After the funding was received in April, Livewire embarked upon a lengthy and complex recruitment process resulting in the hiring of Elaine Keogh, who is now heading up Livewire’s mental health support services. Andy Rance, Livewire youth work coordinator explains, ‘Young people’s mental health and wellbeing has been a growing problem over the past few years. Since national and local government introduced widespread and devastating austerity measures, the numbers of young people presenting with issues has increased frighteningly. We became painfully aware that long waiting lists for help and support were exacerbating an already intolerable situation for young people who were

Livewire launches new mental health service for young people struggling. We decided enough was enough and that we needed to do something - ultimately successfully raising the funding to set up this new service for the wider community Livewire serves.’ A team of qualified volunteers and qualifying student counsellors has been set up to work alongside Elaine, with counselling and support available at each of Livewire’s open access sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, as well as daytime sessions. Alongside this, Livewire has also been successful in raising a further £41,000 to run closed group sessions on Tuesday evenings for young people grappling with mental health and wellbeing issues. These sessions are specifically aimed at young people from the Plymouth area. Parents, carers and other agencies and organisations can refer young people to any of these sessions but most importantly, young people can refer themselves. There will also be support for parents of young people going through issues and soon an after-school session for the younger age group. If anyone would like more information or to refer a young person, please do not hesitate in contacting Elaine via email Elaine@livewireyouth.com, call 01752 843570, or simply drop in on one of the open access sessions. There will be NO long waiting lists.

CROSSPARK PRE-SCHOOL

WELCOMES YOU

As you step into the grounds of Crosspark PreSchool, there is a definite feeling of how preschool ought to be. The delightful grounds are full of play materials – including a garden, tepee, and all the traditional outdoor toys you would expect. Having been run initially as a play group over 35 years ago, Crosspark continues with the ethos that first began the movement – that quality, structured play with peers, in a relaxed environment was essential for child development and learning, and building self-esteem and confidence. Many families have been coming in one way or another for decades – some staff are here because they first took their little ones to the pre-school, and liked it so much that they stayed; and some larger families have been sending their children from the eldest to the youngest, and even bringing along their children’s children. Alongside this gentle, family style, with its spacious, airy environment, the pre-school, still run by Jane

Newman, delivers an excellent curriculum to prepare youngsters for school, socially, personally and academically as well, with individual learning plans for each child. Last year’s Ofsted pronounced them Good in all areas. Jane has additional qualifications as a qualified Integrative Counsellor, specialising in bereavement and can offer practical and emotional support to parents and children alike. She has trained and chosen her staff carefully so they are knowledgeable, wise, and caring – essential for dealing with toddlers and pre-schoolers. Crosspark have funded places for 2, 3 and 4 year olds including funding for 30 hours/ week depending on funding criteria. They also accept childcare vouchers and have a limited amount of places left for September 2018. If you are looking for a pre-school with a high ratio of adult to child, and classes of around 24 children at a time, please visit their website www.crossparkpre-school.co.uk, find them on Facebook, or call Jane on 07966069312, or 841591.

RUGBY NEWS

Saltash Rugby

Article by Kaye Bonner

Still tackling in their 49th Year!

41

RUGBY NEWS Saltash Rugby are now reflecting on an unprecedented season in their 49 year history, with the 1st XV valiant appearance in the RFU Senior Vase Final at Twickenham, as well as a consistent league campaign that saw them finish in the runners up spot in the Cornwall and Devon League, gaining promotion to the Western Counties (West) League for the 2018-19 campaign under skipper and hooker Ryan Rayner. In addition, the club’s 2nd XV beat Tavistock 2nds in the Pedrick Cup Final to add to the success on the field. The club’s own youth section has certainly contributed to the success, with 18 of the 22 players who took the field at Twickenham having come through the youth set up, and a similar ratio in the 2nd XV throughout the season. Re-formed in 2003 following the world cup campaign, the club’s youth section has age groups from Under 7 through to Colts so there is a steady trickle of new players to senior ranks each season. Despite being a small club, Saltash Rugby also has its share of rising stars, chosen to play at county and professional levels. 1st XV wing Will Morton

and Flanker Lewis Wells were selected to play for the full Cornwall side, making their bows against Devon in the Tamar Cup, and appearing in the County Championship at Hertfordshire. The thriving youth section has also had its share of representative honours, with Under 15 captain Archie Fleming representing the Cornwall A Squad as well as appearing for the Exeter Chiefs U15 Academy. Lock Fin Jones and Prop Colm Rich also pulled on the black and gold appearing for the C Squad against Bristol with utility back Andrew Walsh representing Devon Under 15s against Cornwall. In the Under 16s Kristian Davis represented the Exeter Chiefs U16 Academy, as well as Cornwall, with Jack Mills and Freddie Davis also pulling on the Black and Gold. Colts Robert Walsh, Jack Wickham, Devon Bennett-Murray, William Oatey & Danny Snook also played for the County. Now the plans start for the 2018 - 19 season across the club. Thank you Nick Rich for supplying the information.

The exhibition - right under the Brunel bridge at Saltash Waterside - is open 10-4 daily

Printing always produces surprises. Just as a potter subjects his forms and glazes to the unforgiving fire of the kiln and waits with bated breath to open the door, the printer can never be sure how the ink will take, flow or bleed when a plate is subjected to the press. It is this unpredictability, this serendipity that teases the print maker and often produces a raw, hand-made, imperfect effect – sometimes a straightforward but beautiful mistake - that would never have consciously been drawn or scratched. Not to be confused with massproduced ‘prints’ or copies, print-making is about unique, carefully crafted originals. Saltash Press Gang work together to explore their ideas and skills using several techniques:

Comment by John Forster

Drypoint – ink is pressed into an image scratched into a plate that can then be used to make several similar images. Linocut – by contrast, the negative [or ‘leave white’] areas are cut away and the ink is rollered onto the raised surfaces to form the image. Monotype or monoprint - ink is applied directly to a plate and manipulated to make a unique, unrepeatable print. Collagraph – Shapes and textures are collaged onto a plate and then preserved by a coat of paint or shellac and used to create several versions.

SALTMILL SKATEPARK GETS A MAKEOVER Saltmill Skatepark has been given a new and improved look for 2018. This tired and worn out skatepark needed a touch of TLC and with the support of various sponsors and volunteers of Junkyard Skatepark in Saltash, this has finally been able to happen. Saltmill Skatepark is such an important part of the Saltash community and is used by so many. The space is fantastic and a great asset to Saltash. The new layout includes a block coloured finish to look more professional and uniformed, aligning itself with skateparks across the work, with two amazing graffiti artists, Cormack James Reid and Ross Unos Lamerton, volunteering their time to make this happen. Volunteers from Junkyard Skatepark and Groundwork South gave up their time to revitalise this much loved asset of Saltash. All the paint and materials used were funded by Travis Perkins, who’s support made the project possible. There has been a new bin provided by R&G Pools, and new signs, funded by Howdens in Saltash, have been put in place to continue the safe use of the skatepark. Bling Construction Ltd also did their bit by replacing and relaying the BMC track, which has encouraged so many

people to get back on their bikes. A big thank you also goes to the Saltash Town Council and Brunel Recycling. Future plans for the skatepark include raising funding for new CCTV, so that the community can feel safer. There are also plans to repolish the ramps so they’re smoother and easier to use. Regular maintenance checks have also been organised to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the park. There will be a graffiti wall, so people don’t feel the need to vandalise or write and draw on the brand new ramps. A space for creativity was felt to be really important to the project. There will be a skate, BMX and scoot competition on September 8 so already something to look forward to, but if you’d like more information, keep an eye on the Saltmill Skatepark Facebook page for updates. When so many people, of all generations, are turning up to use the Saltmill skatepark, all the hard work seems to have paid off. One last big thank you to all the Junkyard Skatepark volunteers for their hard work and time, all the sponsors who made it possible and the community for getting behind the project. Let’s have a great summer of 2018, down at Saltmill Skatepark!

MUSIC SCENE Saltash is lucky to have some country, blues and americana greats pass through its pubs, venues and even stately homes. This July, hosted by the Pengrillie festival at Pentillie Castle and Estate, visits one man Texas band , Slim Semora. Born in Houston, Texas with roots in Nashville and the South, but now hailing from Cremyll, Slim was brought up during the classic 60’s era on Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Bob Dylan, ZZ Top, JJ Cale and the like, with blues legends such as Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and Mississippi Fred McDowell, also not far from his doorstep. It’s easy to see where his influences lie! His tunes are often reflective of his tumultuous past growing up in Texas, his personal demons being hinted though lyrics of regret and reform, all to a toe tapping, rhythmically contagious beat. Melodic, finger picking tunes with gutsy, toe tapping rhythm and raspy vocals, added to harmonica, slide, foot tambourine and an old suitcase with a kick drum pedal and Suitcase Slim, the One Man Texas band was born. An accomplished musician, Slim Semora has over 30 years of musical experience under his belt, having toured the States with various bands

as well as owning recording studios in Austin, Houston and Wichita. He has worked with artists such as Slash of Guns N Roses, as well as receiving accolades from Wilko Johnson (of Dr Feelgood fame) and an original band member of Elvis’ whilst playing in Memphis. Settling comfortably into the singer songwriter genre, he regularly plays around the Devon and Cornwall pub circuit. He’s visited The Union Inn in Saltash, The Bay Horse Inn in Totnes, The Brook Inn in Plympton, in Plymouth and recently played at the Carpenters’ Arms in Callington, just to name a few. Slim’s unique blend of blues, rock and country sucks you into the Suitcase Slim performance, with his prolific gigging calendar accomplishing nothing to quell the energy of Slim on such a regular basis. Life’s tribulations have naturally provided the perfect platform to showcase the essence of Slim’s soul, which is felt every time he performs. Slim has walked the walk and talked the talk and is guaranteed to get those toes tapping and those hands clapping wherever he performs. Catch him at the Pengrillie Festival at Pentillie Castle on Sunday 15 July, or visit www.slimsemora. com to keep up to date with his future gigs.

Cornwall’s leading barbecue festival, PenGrillie, is to return for a sizzling day of flames, delicious food, live music and fun for all the family in the grounds of the breathtakingly beautiful Pentillie Castle and Estate. The highlight of the festival is the fiery BBQ competition where 12 amateur and professional teams are invited to battle it out over four classes, to see who will be crowned the Best Amateur Team, The Spirit of the BBQ and the overall PenGrillie Grand Champion of 2018. A winner for each BBQ class will also be announced, which includes poultry, seafood, lamb and the Ultimate Chilli. To spice things up even more, the Chilli class will be a ‘People’s Choice’ vote, in aid of Children’s Hospice South West. 2018 will see a bigger selection of food outlets than ever before, offering delicious food throughout the day from Pig and Pallet, who rear their own meat, Kernowforno selling wood fired pizza, Quiet Waters, using their famous rubs and sauces, Just Hummus Vegan and Vegetarian, Sizzle Grills Asado

The cups will cost £1 each which is refundable at the end of your day or you are welcome to take them home as a souvenir. Folk and Celtic punk band Black Friday will headline the event with support from one man Texas band Slim Semora. There will also be fun for all the family including a kids corner, crafts, a bouncy castle and Higher Beings Circus workshops with stilt walkers. WHAT’S ON AT CALSTOCK ARTS

Thursday 5 July

Calstock Film: Fences (Denzel Washington 2016) Cert 12A Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Maxson once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squashes his son’s (Jovan Adepo) chance to meet a college football recruiter. 7pm doors, 7.30pm start | C Fylm annual membership £6, includes first film. £4 for subsequent films. Gallery Bar Special with Kit Hillbillies The return of the Kit Hillbillies with oldtimey, good-timey bluegrass. With rousing vocal harmonies that smuggle in some darkly humorous local references. Some instrumental tasting notes: Banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, double bass. Vigorous, expressive &

unvarnished, with a crisp percussive finish. Think Betty Stogs rather than Harvey’s Bristol Cream. Their music has been described as the sound of Woody Guthrie chasing Earl Scruggs in a stolen hay lorry. It was summed up more simply by the Guardian journalist Tim Dowling, who often writes about music: “The Kit Hillbillies: Excellent. See them soon.” 7pm doors, 8pm start | INFO Tickets are available via www.calstockarts.org

Saturday 28 July Shappi Khorsandi – Mistress and Misfit A regular on Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Have I Got News for You and Q.I, Shappi is back on the road with her new sell out show, presenting England’s unsung heroine, Emma Hamilton. For too long she has been known only as Nelson’s mistress, a bit of a harlot. (You get ONE job in a brothel and bang goes your reputation). Emma moved mountains to haul herself from scullery maid to Lady Hamilton. Yes, she occasionally danced on tables naked to get ahead in life – but who hasn’t? As a fellow naked dancer on tables, Shappi is inspired by Emma, although she never wants hair big enough to house mice in.
