Hello and welcome...

3

….to November’s edition of Love Saltash

Mike Pitches

Despite the night’s drawing in, there is still plenty to see and do to tempt you out of the home to meet up with friends and neighbours. The Kalan Gwav is a great winter festival to look forward to. The fun starts at 2pm on November 3 with children’s entertainer, ZigZag, and finishes around 6.30pm with a spectacular fireworks display in Warfelton Field, next to the Leisure Centre. You can get involved by entering the scarecrow competition or the wheelbarrow race, or bringing your signature apple dish to the Football Club Pavilion between 1pm and 3pm on the day to be judged in a grand bake-off!

And of course, November marks the conclusion of months of effort from the town to properly pay tribute to to the centenary of the First Armistice Day, as well as the centenary of women gaining the vote. Saltash puts on events in style. Joining together to mark such occasions, whether festive or sombre, means that we share in the emotions they bring up. Feeling the same thing at the same time with others helps us feel human and connected, which keeps us living life well. So, if you can, do get along to one thing this month – you will feel better for it.

IN BRIEF

#everybody

wins

Port View Surgery and Saltash Health Centre have been working with their local patient participation groups to deliver a medicines waste campaign. The aim is to raise awareness with patients and the public about the costs to the NHS of medicine waste and what steps patients can take to help.

Staff at Port View have created a display to drive the message home with their own “waste mountain” and special noticeboard. Angie and Lisa had some interesting conversations with patients in the waiting room, who also helped set up the display. Posters are on show to explain how we can all help to reduce waste by only asking for medicines we use.

HELP FOR THOSE

WHO CARE Free advice and support is available at the Saltash Carers Forum meeting, whose next meeting is at Ashtorre Rock on Thursday 8 November from 1.00 to 3.00 pm. These meetings are run by the Kernow Carers

Service and are a free service for unpaid carers that gives them an opportunity to discuss the issues they face and have their voices heard in a welcoming and confidential environment, with others facing similar problems. There are many people in our community who are unaware of the help they can get and who may not recognise themselves as carers because they look after a loved one or friend. Staff from Kernow Carers Service will be at the meetings, and will be able to give help and advice, including making referrals to Carer Support Coordinators (CSCs) who work directly with individual carers to help them with any issues they have, and to signpost benefits and services. Where issues can’t be resolved at the meeting or by a CSC, they have contacts with a variety of health and service providers to highlight any concerns members may have in regard to their caring role. All carers are welcome and expenses will be considered to enable them to attend. For further information please call 01872 243531.

saltash youth

awards

Saltash Town Youth Council will be hosting their Annual Awards on Nov 9 where around 60 young people will be recognised for their enthusiasm and talents to make Saltash a better place. This year’s Mission Youth event, held at Saltmill Park, showcased many of the youth organisations that are located here including St. Johns Ambulance, Scouts, Rugby club, Junkyard, Livewire, The Core, Town band, Fire cadets, SEA, Saltash Town Youth Panel and Wesley Church. It was run with financial support from Saltash Town Council, local Cornwall Councillors and sponsorship from local businesses, and having been considered a great success, could be made an annual event.

festival

The Saltash Music, Speech & Drama Festival will take place at the Saltash Wesley Church from 28 January to 9 February 2019. As in previous years, the committee are looking forward to a wide range of classes, involving all age groups and providing an opportunity for all performers to receive positive feedback from Professional Adjudicators, Philip Thrupp (Speech), Gillian Johnston (Instrumental) and new to the festival, Jane Wilkinson (Vocal). Sessions will be held on most days during the two weeks of the Festival and details of classes, entrance forms and fees can be found in the official syllabus, which is available, free of charge, from Saltash Wesley Church, Saltash Library, The Bookshelf, and Piglets in Fore Street. If you would like to become a friend, an annual donation of £10.00 per person, would entitle you to your name in the programme and free entry to the festival daily (not including the Gala Concert). The Festival will end with a Gala Concert on Saturday 9 February at 7pm, showcasing the winners. Entrance to the Gala Concert is £5.00 for adults, children free.

The Cargreen Regatta attracted over twenty entries despite the appalling weather

conditions last month. The Club which has its Clubhouse and moorings set in a beautiful and tranquil area just two miles upstream of the Tamar Bridges in the village of Cargreen, has a thriving Cadet section and operates some 140 all tide moorings.

The September Regatta is popular with other sailing clubs in the area and the White Sail Series offers gently competitive sailing for any type of yacht. As well as watching the drenched cadets, at this year’s Regatta, a BBQ, beer tent, and live music from Cornish Jam provided a great time. The Network also provides a forum where local councillors can share ideas and best practice as they look to do the best for their areas, and where local people, who are always welcome, can raise any questions. At the last meeting the Network voted to approve

several road safety schemes, where a relatively small amount of money can make a big difference. Regular users of the A388 will be delighted to know that there was support for new road markings to prevent cars attempting to overtake near the turning to Landulph. Residents of Botus Fleming could get a new handrail to some steps to make walking to local shops less of a terrifying ordeal. Whilst local people and their Councillors may still be very concerned regarding the possible merger of Devon and Cornwall with Dorset Police Force, Inspector Julian Morris reported at the last meeting that the number of Police in the area was stable and they were working hard to reduce crime. Of the 33,000 residents in the Gateway Community Network Area, 83.9% feel satisfied with living here, with a crime rate that is consistently lower than the national and County average when compared as a percentage of population. The next meeting is scheduled for December 3 and is open to the public. For more details please contact Catherine.thomson@cornwall.gov.uk or call Lisa Grigg on 01726 223604.

WHo’s responsible

for rubbish? Saltash Environmental Action (SEA) took part recently in a global initiative to collect plastic waste and identify, where possible, the producers of those items. When the data is collected the worst companies will be named and hopefully shamed into helping to solve the problem. Litter picks took place throughout Saltash with SEA members and members of the public including several families. More than 30 children took part in Saltmill as part of the Mission Youth Day. The plastic was separated and analysed by brand

which turned out to be a very tiring and dirty job! Over 1700 pieces of plastic were counted! The “winners” were Cadbury followed by Walkers, Haribo and Lucozade. A lot of dog poo bags were found in Latchbrook. Dave Pemberton, SEA chairman, said: “A lot of communities are getting together to litter pick; plastic is clogging up our roadsides and pathways, and if not removed will last forever. “The manufacturers do not seem to be taking any responsibility for the problem. SEA is proud to be part of this initiative which will hopefully be a

The US environmental charity The Story of Stuff (storyofstuff.org) organised the event and will be publishing the results. According to their website, 8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean each year. Multi national companies who use low quality disposable plastic such as that found in the hedgerows and roadsides of Saltash plan to grow production by 40% over the next decade. Countries and communities that will be most affected by this are those who cannot afford the cleaning and recycling facilities that we have access to here. By 2025 - the year Walkers Crisps has promised to go plastic free - they’ll have produced 28 billion

You really need a Power of Attorney!

A lasting power of attorney is a legal document, in which you appoint another person (or persons) to manage your affairs, if you have lost the capacity to do so and this doesn’t just affect the elderly. There are two types of Lasting power of attorney (LPA), one enables your appointed attorney(s) to deal with property and financial affairs - and the other enables your appointed attorney to deal with your health and welfare issues. What happens if I do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney? Close friends and family (including your spouse) do not automatically have the

right to take over. The Office of the Public Guardian will appoint a Deputy to act on your behalf. This process takes time and is expensive, which may mean that bills cannot be paid and affairs cannot be looked after. Old age is the most common cause of mental incapacity, but incapacity may exist in other circumstances and is not dependant upon age or other f` oreseeable' circumstances. A lasting power of attorney is just as important as a will! Contact ANITA HUTT LL.B(Hons) MSWW 01579 344433 to arrange a home visit now.

REMEMBER NETBALL?

sports news In my school it wasn’t a contact sport, so although I was pretty small, my only intimidation on the court was from leggy girls waving their arms at me alarmingly – better than severely bruised shins! Sarah Dangar was drawn back to Netball after an injury left her unable to run. She decided to have a go at the Netball Local sessions back in 2017.The group moved from strangers to friends in less than a year and decided to jump in with both feet (no travelling allowed on a netball court!) and enter a local league. If you fancy the idea of this, but are slightly nervous of getting back to a sport you haven’t played in decades, Liz Shaw runs Saltash Netball Local, a back to netball club at Saltash Community School on a Tuesday (term time only) from 6-7 with walking netball from 7-8pm. She explained, “Both sessions are aimed at ladies of all abilities and are pay as you go, without the commitment of a league. Open to females of all abilities, aged 14+ with Walking Netball great for those with injuries, joint issues or just who prefer not to run round a court anymore. It’s a great form of exercise, both from a cardio and strength point of view, professionally run with warm ups and cool downs to help any aches! “One of the main things I love about running the sessions is seeing the various friendships grow, which is something special playing a team sport provides. Saltash Clovers are a perfect example of that, along with the christmas meal my Walking Netball ladies are organising. “We have ladies coming along who haven’t played netball in 30 years and they surprise themselves with how much comes back. With beginners, we build up their knowledge of the rules as we go.

27

“The only kit needed is comfortable clothes to play in and a decent pair of trainers to support your feet. Saltash Clovers, the team who play in the Callington League, are made up of players ranging from their late 20s to mid 50’s are proudly sponsored by Mike Clover of Mike Clover Estimating Services Ltd. For Kerry, team captain, and other members of her team its “it’s an hour of “me” time in a busy mum life! And great to have a laugh with a lovely group of ladies!” Another plus is that netball involves both body and mind working hard so there is no space to think about stresses and worries as adrenaline is used as it should be. “Competition brings you together as a team, making you think about strategy and a sense of working together – great skills for honing a competitive spirit”, say team members Kerry P and Nicola. Sophie agrees, saying, “The intensity of netball varies throughout a game. It can be fast paced, require good hand-eye coordination, quick reactions, speed and a lot of stamina to last the whole hour of play! It has certainly been a motivation for me to improve my fitness in order to play to my full potential and not let the team down! “I have never been one to enjoy going to a gym but I thoroughly enjoy every netball session where I am “exercising” without even realising it! We always have good fun whilst doing so and although we have moved on to playing competitively we certainly don’t take ourselves too seriously!” Find out more by emailing Sarah, sarahdangar@ yahoo.co.uk or visiting the Saltash Netball Local Facebook page.

Happy MAmma, Happy Baba!

family news Having a baby is supposedly the most natural thing in the world. However, ask any new mum to be, and you might find that behind the bravado, there is some uncertainty. Once birth is over and done with (phew! Let’s just say it’s amazing, it hurts, and it can be completely overwhelming), new mums find themselves with hundreds of baby experts happy to give advice, at a time when they are feeling less confident than ever. Fortunately, you don’t have to decipher conflicting advice from Mums, Aunties, Grandmas, Sisters and Proud Fathers who have read all the parenting books: here in Saltash, there is a very lovely, local group that brings sanity and stillness back to the most anxious of mums. Upfront Saltash meets every second Thursday between 9.30 and 11am at the Saltash Family Hub next to the Leisure Centre. Its qualified peer supporters are all mums themselves with at least six months of successful breastfeeding under their belts. There is absolutely no pressure, and the group provides a safe space to consider breastfeeding, get help with any problems, and have lots of encouragement and support. Its lovely friendly atmosphere is great for tiny babies as well as toddlers in tow. Several mums are here with their second baby, after being persuaded not to breast feed their first. Claire is enjoying it so much, she is still feeding baby Leo, who at one has nine teeth! (Myth buster – babies can be taught not to bite very quickly, and some don’t even try). The first half hour is exclusively for those wanting a very quiet, private and comfortable space to talk with a peer supporter; after that it becomes more

31

of a social space where toddlers are welcome too. Tammy came here with baby Willow, her second child. Like many young mums she did not breastfeed her first child, but felt a surge of empowerment from the support of other mums. “I get her all to myself,” she grinned, snuggled into Willow, “And I feel so much more confident as a Mum.” The group are actively looking for volunteers to train as peer supporters – Holly trained whilst she was on maternity leave, as the group had been a big part of her life when her first child was born. She is a big believer in trusting your instincts, and normalising breast feeding in public. Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to be discreet, and a lot better than sitting in a public toilet! Debz explained, “A pregnant woman has done a fantastic job cooking that baby inside her. Our group helps her to trust her instincts when it comes to feeding. Whether she decides to fully or partially breast feed, we’re here to listen to concerns and offer our experiences to help her realise how she can give her baby everything they need. If you are a good listener with breast feeding experience and enthusiasm and would like to train as a peer supporter, or if you think this group is just what you need, contact them on their facebobook page Upfront Breastfeeding Support Saltash or call Saltash Family Hub on 01752 847419

At the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, the 3rd Battalion of the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment was stationed in the fields between Cross Park and Wearde Farm, in the area which is today occupied by Broad Walk and the adjoining roads. Their encampment comprised hundreds of tents, but plans were soon made for more permanent quarters in the form of wooden huts resting on concrete and stone foundations, to be erected in the fields immediately to the south of where the present day Community School now stands. Over 2000 tons of stone for this

work was supplied by Messrs. Jeffords’ Quarry at Tor, Burraton Coombe, between October, 1914 and April, 1915, with a further 900 tons to improve the access roads. The contractor selected to undertake the construction of the camp was Carkeek of Plymouth, who, in 1916 faced a court action brought by St. Germans Rural District Council to recover the cost of damage to the highway caused by Jefford’s steam wagon in transporting the stone from the quarry to the site. ‘C’ Company of the 4th East Surrey Regiment was also stationed at Wearde. In 1917 Field Marshal Viscount French, who had commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France from 1914-1916, visited the camp to inspect the troops. The enormous toll of casualties which ensued from the carnage on the Western Front eventually

member them changed the role of the Wearde encampment from a military base to a hospital for the wounded, and in 1920 it became the Queen Alexanda Convalescent Centre, under the auspices of the Ministry of Pensions, with its patients being distinctively dressed in light blue clothing. The people of Saltash and District were very supportive of the servicemen during the war, and later of the hospital patients. Soldiers were invited into homes and many events were organised for them. A report in the Saltash Gazette in 1918 describes a social evening at St. Nicholas Church Rooms, attended by seventy convalescent men from the camp. Some entertainment was also available ‘in house’; in 1921 it was reported that the Wearde Camp Amateur Dramatic Society gave a performance at Wearde Camp Cinema.

The hospital eventually became redundant and the huts were removed during 1927-1928. One of them was re-erected at St Stephens village and was used for community events, being known as St Stephens Hall. It has gone as indeed have all the remnants of the stonework foundation at Wearde, which remained for many years covered by vegetation, a haven for wildlife, a heaven for blackberry pickers, and a delight to children, who used the site as an unofficial adventure play area. Where the camp once stood is now grassland, and nothing remains of the buildings which so many soldiers left to fight in France, and to which later some returned to recuperate from that traumatic experience. good news for THE CORE Article by Charlotte Carpenter

The Core want to share some good news with Love Saltash this month, as we have been fortunate enough to receive funding from both the lottery and the Police and Crime Commissioners small grants scheme, to increase our youth work team and provide young people with more sessions and a wider variety of activities. We already run a full youth work programme, to include two youth nights, after school youth cafe, Tic Tac advice drop in, LGBTQ+ group, schools outreach work and a thriving youth committee,

but now we are excited to be increasing our provision. At The Core we value young people’s ideas and input and pride ourselves on listening to what they want from their youth centre. It is important to us that the young people help to shape the provision and we try to respond to their needs. A good example of this has been our LGBTQ+ group ‘Just be you”. We were approached by some of our members about the need to have a group where young people can feel safe and not judged and the opportunity to meet other young people who understand them. We applied for funding to set up ‘Just be you’ and now the young people lead the group themselves with support from our youth

We will be recruiting experienced youth workers to join our existing team and extending our youth work programme to include; The Friday Night Project – This is with funding from The Police and Crime Commissioner to look at tackling anti-social behaviour within our town. We will be out and about talking to young people on the streets and finding out what they want and opening up The Core for them to have a safe and warm place to meet. Thursday After School Girls group – This is in response to some of our young women sharing their experiences of feeling awkward about doing sport in front of boys, having negative body image and low self esteem. This project will provide young women with a space to try new activities,

share their experiences and raise their selfesteem. We will be offering sports, cooking, wellbeing, body image workshops and loads more! In addition to the sessions we offer at The Core, I also work closely with Saltash Community School. HATS OFF TO FORMER

SALTaSH PUPILS

Article by Kaye Bonner

There couldn’t have been a better day than to celebrate four former students from Saltash.net Community School attending their graduation. According to a league table that uses data from the Met Office, Chichester is the sunniest city in the UK which was very apparent on Sunday 16 September. The University of Chichester in West Sussex welcomed its Graduates from all over the world to celebrate their perseverance and resilience. Hundreds of excited graduates patiently waited for their names to be called upon, but eagerly clapping and cheering in support of all the other awardees. On an Indian summer’s day, under an azure blue sky, four deserving ex-students from Saltash.net School attended their graduation ceremony. Jamie Pullan, Laura Kelly, Joe Lang and Florence Bonner,

proudly accepted their BA Honours Degrees in Music, Musical Theatre and Performance at the Chichester Festival Theatre, being the flagship of all the big named shows ordained for the West End. The ‘superlative four’ have been friends for many years, but they did not expect to not only attend the same university, but to also study the performing arts and graduate together on the same day. The proud parents reminisced on their children’s early days and how their passion for the performing arts and music grew. Florence Bonner said, ‘This day has been really amazing, in fact the whole experience has been surreal, to look back at our first day, we never realised how much the University was going to change our lives’. Special thanks goes out to their former music and drama teachers, Jo Loyn and Viv Haighton from Saltash.net Community School, who had every faith in their students through highs and lows. A very proud and rewarding day indeed!

Saltash Students Make Their Mark

By Isobel Whittam and Jas Sutton

This week Saltash Community School took part in the UK Youth Parliament - Make Your Mark Vote. This gives the students a chance to vote on a public issue they want to see changed. The most popular choice will be taken to the Houses of Parliament by young people to see if the issue can be solved. To find out more about this exciting opportunity we interviewed the Head of Politics at Saltash, Mr Killeya. This is what he had to say: “The school has taken part in the annual vote for around seven years and we feel it is important for the students to take part. Most young people (aged 18- 24) choose not to use their vote because they feel that people in parliament do not listen and that they have no

voice- we want to show our students that they do have a voice and they are listened to.” He then went on to add, “I’ve been interested in politics since a young age and I want to inspire our students to do the same.” Last year the school took part in a mock Brexit vote, “You could see the students were interested in the subject- it was great to see them talking about it and getting involved.” As students we felt that it was great to learn about politics and to have this chance to vote. We would like to thank Mr Killeya for this opportunity and we hope that future students will also be involved in the UK Youth Parliament Make Your Mark vote for many years to come.

Open Evenings Build Aspiration The two Open Evenings were once again a success, with hundreds of primary students from both Plymouth and Saltash participating. It was great to see so many of the years 5’s and 6’s getting excited about the school. The Saltash students helped with the evening by supporting teachers within their favourite

subjects, becoming tour guides and explaining what it is like at Saltash Community School. Many pupils from all years showed how proud they are of the school and helped shine a light on the amazing things we do here. We hope to welcome countless faces from the two Open Evenings into Year 7 next year.

THE BEST OF THE WEST Despite moving to the area less than three years ago, John and Ann Bland are already attracting food lovers from across the globe into their restaurant, Heskyn Mill. “We are hosting the final Gala Dinner for a group of international tourists on various dates throughout the year,” explained John, “We were selected by the specialist tour company because of our commitment to using only genuinely local produce.” “We only serve what we would eat ourselves extremely high quality, fresh produce. Around half of our vegetables come from a small holding in Tideford. All of our lamb is from one local farmer. We recently visited a game dealer on the edge of Bodmin Moor, recommended to us by one of our customers, who is now supplying us with pigeon, pheasant, wild rabbit and wild venison. “By visiting our suppliers, we can monitor standards ourselves - something that is crucial to our ethics “It also means that we can get excited about planning new dishes for our menu depending on what is available, ensuring we always offer seasonal, fresh and exciting meals to our customers. “Many of our regular customers are good cooks themselves, so they enjoy coming to us to try something different.” The range of food available also extends to Sunday lunch. A full menu of game, fish, poultry and meats are available, as well as the traditional roast. All

locally sourced, of course. This commitment to local sourcing and use of seasonal ingredients has meant that Heskyn Mill has a growing reputation in the South West for the quality of their food. After only the first six months of trading, they were highly commended in the annual Taste of the West awards, moving on to win Gold for the last two years running. This year, they were also amongst eleven finalists from the whole of the West Country, for the Best Restaurant Award held in September this year. John and Ann are very proud to have achieved the Gold standard two years running. The Taste of the West (tasteofthewest.co.uk) is the website for discovering the best foodie offerings in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Founded in 1991, it boasts an impressive array of experts, including Prince Charles as its patron. Heskyn Mill were visited by an anonymous diner earlier in the year, who scored the restaurant on ambience, quality of service and value for money as well as the actual food and drink served. As Maítre Di, John took this in his stride as he loves offering wine recommendations and food advice to his knowledgable customers. And with wife Ann as head chef, they make a great team.

The quality of the design and the technical mastery come together to make the product good for the job for which it is intended and, in the best work, to bring satisfaction and enrichment to its user. Art work, on the other hand, has no such practical function. Yet, when it is good, it will be more than simple decoration, something to Comment by John Forster cover an empty sitting room wall. It too will have technical mastery and careful design, but it will also bring the viewer satisfaction, food for thought, tingles down the spine, even. Is there really a distinction? What about the pottery that is pure sculpture or the artist’s design that adorns a box or a screen? The craftsmanship of the Artist; the artistry of the Craftsperson. The RIVERSIDE QUILTERS' WEEKEND FESTIVAL will show Craft in abundance. Their CAFE EXHIBITION uses their needlecraft skills to create Art, pure and simple. Right?

Images©the artists

Ashtorre Rock exhibitions are about Art, right? They’re paintings, prints and drawings, in oil and watercolour and ink. That’s Art, right? So where do the works shown by RIVERSIDE QUILTERS fit in? They’re embroidery, tapestry, quilting. Like pottery, macramé, wood-turning. That’s Craft, right? But is there a real difference? Is either better or either more useful? Is Art somehow cleverer – on a higher plane – fresh ideas straight from the artist’s head - whilst Craft work follows established, repetitive traditions: techniques, materials and tricks

The World’s Most Idiotic Marathon Hidden Gem on the Saltash Waterfront

An Interview with Tina Parker – co-owner of Just Be on the Saltash Waterfront Q: What motivated you to run the Medoc Marathon this year? This is very special year for me and my family. We call it the 151 year, with my daughter having her 21st birthday, my dad his 80th… and, well, you can work out mine! Q: How did you decide which charity to pick and raise funds for? Mental health awareness and support, particularly amongst young people, has long been of personal importance to me, linked to my time as a teacher at Saltash College. Invictus Trust (www.invictustrust. co.uk) fitted the bill perfectly, and they are doing such fantastic work to raise awareness and give support locally. Q: What were the standout moments from the race itself? Firstly, the sudden realisation just before the start that all the weeks of preparation and fundraising came down to this particular moment. Scary! Halfway through I remember looking around and seeing a river of colour from all the fancy dress costumes as 10,000 runners snaked Tina, dressed through the vineyards… so fitting as the marathon

Pop in or contact us for details

I had decided that this year I would ‘live life in colour’, 01752 214356 such an emotional moment! I also remember, at a particularly painful part of the run, feeling very alone, despite being surrounded by thousands of runners, and wondering who I could call to give me permission to quit... the fundraising cause kept me going fortunately. The other great moment was the relief at crossing the finish line. Q What have you been doing since the race to raise funds? We held a ‘not a pub pub quiz’ here at Just Be, which was really well attended. I also auctioned off my race completion bottle of fine Bordeaux wine (hard to part with something so precious) and we held a raffle… thanks to local companies Waitrose, Castang Wines, Trevethan Gin and St Austell Brewery who donated prizes. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this challenge, financially and emotionally! The target is £2,000 and we are so close, with about £200 still to go…. so please, support via the Virgin giving page or in the bucket at Just Be, and continue to raise up for awareness of The Invictus Trust. ILLUMINATE @ Royal william yard

Following last year’s success, the spectacular Illuminate light festival will return to the historic Royal William Yard on November 22 - 25. From 5.30pm each night, when darkness descends, the Yard will come alive with beautiful projection mapping, playful light installations and interactive pieces, creating a spectacular immersive experience. Created by artists, tech designers, performers, children and young people, the light festival promises to delight visitors of all ages with a fun and inspiring immersive experience. Charles Hackett, Chief Executive of Mayflower 400, said: “Illuminate is one of the key events planned for the commemorations and as well as being an amazing annual spectacle, the festival will build on the core values of Mayflower 400.” Innovative water screen technology will see artists experiment with projecting onto the sea and land. Two international light artists invited to

showcase their work at the festival are Xavi Bové and Thomas Voillaume. Spanish artist Xavi Bové’s piece, Visual Songs, is an interactive installation that aims to create a link between songs and its visual representation. His work is personalised for each visitor, allowing them to take a printed version of their personal creation home. Voillaume’s work, Human, is a monumental video mapped sculpture. The 8ft figure represents an entity of humanoid form that has taken shape in our reality. French artist Thomas Voillaume likes to mix means of expression, surprising his audience and challenging himself. Illuminate is a free event, open to families and people of all ages, from 5.30 till 10pm at the Royal William Yard, Plymouth. Visitors will be able to enjoy a vast range of food and drink from the Yard’s resident eateries as well as outdoor stalls.
