Hello and welcome...

3

...to Love Saltash.

Can’t believe we are in Autumn already! It’s such a beautiful time of year to connect with nature, even if you are only able to stick your head out the door and smell the changing season in the air. If you’re feeling more adventurous, I recently went for a dip from one of Churchtown’s river beaches and can heartily recommend a spot of wild swimming. As always in Saltash, there are scores of events, clubs and activities to dip your toe into even without being in the Great Outdoors. Whatever our interests, medical research has now proved that being around other people is good for our health, let alone good for those who get the gift of our company. We are fortunate to have a bunch of ordinary

folk who work tirelessly to create a good environment for the rest of us to enjoy. Funding is sourced for flowers and landscaping, improvements and upkeep of play areas, open spaces, and publicly owned buildings, and for supporting events. Decisions have to be made in how the limited amounts of funds are used, leading to lively debates in community groups and council meetings; but I am so glad that our community has so many passionate people who care enough to get involved. I hope you enjoy this month’s pages that are promoting just some of the good work being done. Please get in touch to let us know of more.

KALAN

GWAV RETURNS

The popular Kalan Gwav, celebrating the onset of winter, will run on Saturday 3 November from 2pm at Warfelton Fields. The event will include an outdoor market, children’s entertainment, and live music along with the traditional Wassail, Lighting of the Flame, and Fireworks. A fundraising race night is planned for September 29, 7.30pm at Saltash Football Club to help pay for the fireworks where keen punters and total beginners can have an equal chance to win, alongside a tasty hot supper. Last year’s event attracted a great crowd of revellers cosied up in hats and scarves, and wearing wellies. And, with Saltash‘s vibrant music scene offering such talent, it will be a treat to dance once again under the stars on November 3 to the Burraton Boys, Simon and his Uncle, and Black Friday.

Saltash Town Council is pleased to announce that plans for revitalising a key gateway into

Saltash have moved a further step forward. The Town Council has issued Invitation to Tender documents for the refurbishment of the Saltash Station Building Cornwall Council approved the plans that have been prepared by the Bailey Partnership in July and have subsequently prepared detailed documents for the work tendering process. The Town Council intend to work closely with a main contractor, who will be appointed at the end of the tender period in early October to achieve the approved plans. These plans include providing passenger waiting facilities, such as a waiting room and toilets. The remainder of the building will be receiving a basic refurbishment, providing a blank canvas for future development. It is hoped that this space will eventually provide a café and business related space, with the Town Council continuing to seek further funding and partners for this element. The current phase of works is funded by Saltash Town Council, Cornwall Council, Great Western Railway and the Railway Heritage Trust. Councillor Richard Bickford, who is leading the team, said: ‘This is a very exciting part of the process and we very much hope to find a great partner that will help us achieve our longstanding goal to refurbish this building for the people of Saltash and Cornwall.’ Mayor of Saltash, Councillor John Brady added: ‘It has been a real team effort to get this far. Saltash Town Council remain committed to getting this project completed as soon as possible.’ Interested companies should refer to the Contract Finder website at http://bit.ly/ SaltashStationRefurb, where they can find full details. IN BRIEF Members of SEA

PLASTIC UNWRAP

On Friday, September 7, Saltash Environmental Action (SEA) held a Plastic Unwrap event at Waitrose, Saltash. SEA members invited shoppers to leave their excess plastic wrapping with them who then returned this to the store manager. This was a peaceful event and not a protest. SEA are aware that Waitrose are trying to minimise their plastic use but the aim is to get them to demand that their suppliers reduce packaging even further and where possible, use an alternative. SEA met with a deputy store manager in advance to explain what they would be doing. One example of unnecessary packaging was two sweet potatoes on a styrofoam tray all encased in plastic! Shoppers were very interested and supportive and a good amount of packaging was returned to the store .

WATERSIDE REMEMBERS

Article by Karen Pilkington

Waterside Remembers is an event designed to bring the Commemorations of World War 1 home to a younger generation and their families. Whilst standing in silence and ceremony is an important part of remembering the overwhelming realities of 100 years ago, it is equally important to ensure that this message is translated to the generations that have no memory or understanding of a country at war. Waterside Remembers will bring together music, visuals and lighting, as well as museum pieces to help a younger generation connect with the commemorations. Soldiers departed from the Saltash Slipway, beside Ashtorre, to fight in 1914. Young men, many of whom still in their teens, would have had no idea of what they signed up for. Their bravery and selfsacrifice has been told in poetry and memoir by those whose first-hand experience shattered the false news that upheld the glory of war, yet still honoured and respected those who fought. Livewire will add a contemporary feel to this memorial event. Several veterans’ organisations will be represented by those who have served more recently, and a

plaque will be unveiled on the Green. Waterside Remembers is sponsored by local businesses, Westcountry Skip Hire and Saltash Lions Club and will be held on Thursday 1 November between 5pm and 8pm. It promises to be a memorable event.

how you can help

the nhs

People in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are being urged not to waste their medication – which costs the local NHS approximately £2million a year. Finances in the NHS in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly – like elsewhere in the country – are already stretched and people are encouraged to play their part to help improve the situation by only ordering the medication they really need. The money saved could be reinvested in vital, local healthcare services. The staggering figure includes prescription medication left languishing and unused in homes, that end up being returned to the pharmacy. One group of people from Saltash, who are members of the Patient Participation Groups attended an information and awareness event earlier this year arranged by Port View Surgery. As a result they are so concerned about the cost to the local NHS through wasted prescriptions they are helping run a campaign called #everybodywins, which will be launched across the town this October to raise awareness. #everybodywins encourages people to speak to their GP or pharmacist if they have any difficulty or have stopped taking any of their medication. The cost of medicines that aren’t taken is also wasted money as they are incinerated or buried in landfill sites and once a medicine is dispensed it cannot be reused. Also, if we don’t take our prescribed drugs properly, this could impact on our health and ultimately leading to unnecessary treatments. GPs understand that people sometimes struggle with taking their medicines for a variety of reasons.

They could be worried about the side effects, don’t think that they are working, or find it difficult to remember to take them at the right time. Dr Josh Hamilton, from Saltash Health Centre, said: “Please only order what you need when you need it. If your prescription request is generated by someone other than you, ensure you check your order before you leave the chemist so that medicines not required can be returned and reused. Your local pharmacist can also help you manage many common health complaints without you requiring a doctor’s appointment.” He added: “People shouldn’t be afraid to tell their GP or pharmacist if they have stopped taking their medicines or no longer want to take them – we are here to help and discuss the best option for them and their health.” Peter Thistlethwaite PPG member from Port View said “In discussions earlier this year among patients at Port View Surgery, several people commented on the apparent wastefulness in the way some prescriptions are dealt with. Of most concern were repeat prescriptions which were made up when not actually needed, and also cheap drugs, eg paracetamol, being prescribed at a very high cost to surgeries when available at small cost to individuals in supermarkets. It was felt that all this was wasting the precious resources of the NHS, and that action was needed to change the system. If the #everybodywins campaign is a success in Saltash then the hope is that it will be rolled out to other parts of the county.

HELEN’S DETERMINATION PAYS OFF

Local woman Helen Harrington has presented her petition for barriers to be installed on the Tamar Bridge to both Plymouth City Council and Cornwall Council. Five councillors from each of the two Joint Authorities sit on the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee, who operate the toll bridge and the ferry. The venture is jointly owned by both Councils. Helen has been campaigning long and hard to raise awareness for the need for security barriers on the bridge to lessen the risk to members of the public of planned and accidental falls. Recently her petition reached over 10,000 signatories. Plymouth City Council must debate the concerns raised by the petition if 5,000 or more of those signatories live in the area covered by the Council. Several safety issues have been raised. Officers have met with emergency services representatives and relevant health professionals to gain opinions on the operational viability and effectiveness of feasible options. At that meeting various concerns were raised and further options development is

Helen Harrington

required to get a clear position on viability. Simply put, any additional safety measures would cost money. The Bridge carries over 16 million vehicles a year, and on a busy weekday over 50,000 vehicles use the crossing, presumably half of which pay the toll. The Committee have pointed out that the Bridge toll subsidizes the considerably more expensive operation of the Torpoint Ferry and commissioned a public survey over the summer to consult on a possible price increase. The Committee is at pains to reassure the public that it would not approve potential toll increases in 2019/20 until they have been subject to public consultation and further reports to the Committee, Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council, and approval by the Secretary of State. Helen’s petition can be found on Change.org. She states determinedly that, “the petition will continue until such times as sufficient steps are taken by both Plymouth City Council and Cornwall Council to address this serious issue.”

support the Valley

This year’s Discovery Trail Challenge: Devon Taster, a walk along the Devon side of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will take place on Saturday 6 October and will raise funds for Tamar Tender Loving Care (TLC). Tamar TLC is a charity that raises & distributes funds for the benefit of the Tamar Valley AONB. The Discovery Trail is one of the most varied and rewarding routes to walk in the South West. Many people enjoy walking smaller sections of the Trail, but longer routes can seem daunting if venturing out alone. This organised walk offers people the chance to walk a large section of the Trail, knowing that there is help or refreshment close by. Along the trail there will be free water top-ups, a pasty lunch (courtesy of Ginsters), cup of tea, experienced medical cover and regular check-in points staffed by marshals. Each walker will also receive a certificate and goody bag. The cost to sign up for the Discovery Trail Challenge: Devon Taster is £20 per person, or £40

for a team of 3 - 6 people. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team also invite you to share your thoughts and ideas as part of a consultation, as they move towards the next 5 years in conserving and enhancing this special landscape. On and off the Pitch

17

community news

On the pitch Nicknamed “The Ashes”, the club have started the new season in great form which is a success both in football terms and from a financial standpoint. It’s not been easy though, starting with 8 players when manager Matt Cusack and assistant Dane Bunney, both former Saltash players, took charge in 2015. Despite this, the talented duo guided the Ashes to a sixth place finish and followed that by finishing runners up in both the league and Cornwall cup in 2017. Last season they went one better in the cup, winning the Cornwall Senior Cup for the first time in 25 years but finishing 4th in the league. The team will be looking to defend the cup this season and challenge for the league title.

Off the pitch Behind the scenes, work continues. The club are putting their efforts into involving the local community with match tickets being offered to local schools and local businesses offering their support with sponsorship deals. The volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes were an integral part of the ground passing its grading tests to allow the club to return to the FA Cup. This was led by groundsman Brian Pinkham, who was runner up in the Groundsman of the Year award in 2017. Commercial Manager Clive Farrant has doubled

revenue from sponsorship deals since joining the club in 2017, building positive relationships with local businesses in both Saltash and Plymouth, offering hospitality matches throughout the season, where sponsors attend the game and are given the opportunity to choose and present the man of the match and have this advertised on social media. Despite this success, the club are always on the lookout for businesses who want to offer their support. The club have appointed 23 year old Scott Cooksley to the role of football secretary, one of the youngest secretaries at this level and have brought in former Halesowen Town Head of Media, Craig Rowbury-Harrison to head up the new “Ashes Media” team, including a new YouTube highlights service “Ashes TV”, giving the club a clear identity on all social media. The club house has also been refurbished this summer and is available to host functions.

THE FUTURE The main aim for the club is to involve the local community and encourage as many fans as possible to come and support their local team as they look to succeed both on and off the pitch. Supporters can keep up to date with the club through their Facebook and Twitter pages as well as their club website www.saltashunited.co.uk Please come along to support your local team and have a great family friendly day out!

Thirty YEars of FRIENDSHIP

In this day and age of quick release relationships, it’s sometimes quite unusual to see a 30 year level of commitment. It’s even more unusual when you discover that the relationships concerned are based on long term volunteering, rather than family, marriage, or school friends! In 1988 Carole Plumley felt she wanted to give a bit back in life and became a volunteer and later chair for the Gateway Club in Saltash, which supported local people with learning disabilities. Joined a year later by Patricia Holland as treasurer, the club morphed into The Tamar Friendship Club in 2005 when the group of friends felt they could be more useful to the community as an

independent group. Carole and Patricia have been volunteering ever since. The Club is ably led by Alistair Sampson, an indispensable and much liked member of the team, and a comparative newcomer having volunteered for a mere 21 years! Activities are designed to be as varied and fun as possible for those with learning disabilities over 16 years old. Most attendees are happy to come unsupported, a few with one to one support. Activities include Karaoke, visits from Music Man, Dave Newman, games including indoor bowls and Club favourite, Housey Housey, craft evenings and a wide range or trips and visits. Liz Harima, whose son Aidan first came along as

community news an extremely quiet 16 year old with severe speech and language delay and epilepsy, is full of praise for the supportive and caring environment. In a letter of thanks she wrote, “Our son had never danced in public, until the Club introduced him to dancing. When I saw him get up and dance at a disco, this brought tears to my eyes.” The group also go to local pubs, restaurants and have annual Panto visits. Pat says, “We do consider ourselves friends, some members we support have been coming for almost as long as we have, and they are equally welcoming to new people.” Carole agrees; “As our meetings are fortnightly, they are seen as more of an event, than just a regular activity, so they have a bit of a party atmosphere. We forget how important it is to have things to look forward to, especially for those who are unable to fully enter the busyness of more conventional adult lives.” “We welcome everyone to come along and see

for themselves. We meet fortnightly in St Nicholas and Faith Church Hall on Tuesdays from 7.15-9pm, from October 2. The entry fee is £2.50.” The Tamar Friendship Club is entirely self-funded and the club would be lost without its much appreciated volunteer helpers who are all properly DBS checked and insured, with decades of experience of working with vulnerable adults. Volunteers have run marathons, organised sponsored walks, and gratefully received donations from long standing supporters such as the SHCF. Should anyone wish to make further inquiries about how to offer support, please contact Carole on cplums@hotmail.co.uk or just come along on the night.

Miniature Works of Art created at Ashtorre

Article by Sue Hooper MBE

The Great War 1914 - 1918 Commemorative Events Committee formed in April this year, with the aim of commemorating and honouring the 140 men from, and associated with, Saltash who were killed in action. They commissioned a 1.7 metre metal “Silent Soldier” now on permanent watch in the Memorial Peace Garden in Alexandra Square. Volunteers are creating numerous carpets of poppies with over 30,000 intertwined poppies on over 30 metres of cloth. This project is ongoing and will form part of a touring exhibition in Saltash, including Remembrance Sunday within the grounds of St Nicholas and St Faith Church. They have secured funding for large pictorial display boards and memorial plaques to be sited at the Saltash Railway Station and Saltash Ferry slipway. These will remind and inform people where Saltash men and troops from Cornwall and elsewhere left for the

Western Front 100 years ago. They intend to compile a publication of children’s and members of the community’s prose and poetry relating to the First World War. The Committee have also invited local children and community folk to paint 140 Cornish pebbles – one for each man from Saltash who died. The pebbles will be reunited in the Saltash Memorial Peace Garden at a special ceremony on Remembrance Sunday at approximately 11.30 am – with 140 children laying the pebbles to the sound of bells and music. Other events will also include “Waterside Remembers” (see page 36) film showings, sing-alongs, poetry readings, re-enactments, and a few surprises! The Committee are ever grateful for the funding given thus far from Saltash Town Council, China Fleet Country Club, Saltash RBL, Saltash RNA, Saltash Rotary, Cornwall Councillors (Saltash), Fred Rogers (Sanford Garage), Section 106 funding, GWR and Saltash Lions. For further information on any of the events and projects planned please contact Sue Hooper (01752 843073) or Lynn Marsh (01752 844255).

You really need a Power of Attorney!

A lasting power of attorney is a legal document, in which you appoint another person (or persons) to manage your affairs, if you have lost the capacity to do so and this doesn’t just affect the elderly. There are two types of Lasting power of attorney (LPA), one enables your appointed attorney(s) to deal with property and financial affairs - and the other enables your appointed attorney to deal with your health and welfare issues. What happens if I do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney? Close friends and family (including your spouse) do not automatically have the

right to take over. The Office of the Public Guardian will appoint a Deputy to act on your behalf. This process takes time and is expensive, which may mean that bills cannot be paid and affairs cannot be looked after. Old age is the most common cause of mental incapacity, but incapacity may exist in other circumstances and is not dependant upon age or other f` oreseeable' circumstances. A lasting power of attorney is just as important as a will! Contact ANITA HUTT LL.B(Hons) MSWW 01579 344433 to arrange a home visit now.

cOMMUNITY NEWS

looking for some

good news?

Article by Tim Parkman

Tim Parker, Minister at Saltash Baptist Church and member of Saltash Team Ministry, gives us his thoughts on where to find some good news. “This is certainly not true of Love Saltash, but sometimes you open magazines, newspapers or even browse on the internet and it is hard to find any good news. We seem to be inundated with difficult stories, human suffering, one person being horrible to another and we have to delve really deep to find the good news stories. Of course they are there, but they just don’t sell in the same way. Finding Good News can be really important; to give us an uplift, to help restore faith in humanity and just to know that there are good things going on out there.

For those of us who have a faith, Good News is a really important part of our understanding of God, in fact the very word that we use for the accounts of Jesus in the Bible is Gospel, which means ‘Good News’. Good News for the poor, the sad, the lonely, the rich, the ill, in fact it is Good News for everyone. I often think that people imagine church being a boring place where a preacher at the front tells everyone how bad they are, but I challenge you to go to any church in the town and find that there is hope, love and Good News. Faith is not a restrictive straight jacket, but freeing, life giving, and delivering the Good News that God loves us so much that he sent His Son to show this on a Cross and then by rising again. Too good to be true? Well believe me, it really is Good News for everyone. I wonder if you can find good news to celebrate today?”

pilgrimage to ypres were given 2 hours to peruse the town but I spent most of my time in silence at the Menin Gate checking out all of its sides. It really is incredible just how many men are listed here (54,000 unknown graves up to 16 August 1917). It is so sad that so many had to die for what sometimes seems very little.” “The privilege of playing Last Post was given to buglers of the local volunteer Fire Brigade. The first sounding of Last Post took place on 1 July 1928 and a daily ceremony was carried on for about four months. From 11 November 1929 the Last Post has been sounded at the Menin Gate Memorial every night and in all weathers. The only exception to this was during German occupation of Ypres from 1940 to 1944. The daily ceremony was instead continued in England at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey. On the very evening that Polish forces liberated Ypres the ceremony was resumed at the Menin Gate, despite heavy fighting still going on in other parts of the town. Imagining parents seeing their loved ones depart for War and receiving the all too inevitable telegram from the Ministry, to watching the anguish experienced by Vera Britain both at home and Volunteer Nursing at the Front Line, took me completely over the emotional top as if someone had blown the whistle for me too. I had a while where I was left completely broken and unable to speak or move on the coach. “The horrors of The Great War even 100 years on are never likely to be fully appreciated by any of us but having undertaken this Pilgrimage, the least I can do is show and Pay my Respects to those who gave their all for me.”

SPEAKING UP FOR MENTAL HEALTH

Article by Kat Archer

According to the Childrens’ Society, mental health in young people is reaching a crisis point, with 1 in 10 having a mental health diagnosis. We caught up with Elaine Keogh, specialist worker with Livewire’s Heart n’ Soul Project to find out how they are addressing the problem: What mental health

support services are provided at Livewire? For ages 13 to 21, we have one on one counselling support from 9.30am to 2.30pm daily. We also have drop ins available and an open access youth group on a Monday and Thursday from 7pm to 9.30pm. All of these are run on site by a team of qualified youth workers, musicians and counsellors. On Wednesdays, we have a Junior Club which is 6.30pm to 8.30pm which is also an open access group with again, youth workers,

livewire news

counsellors and musicians. We will be holding groups involving general wellbeing workshops, art therapy and more on these evenings. We also have a wellbeing evening on a Tuesday with peer mentors, counsellors, youth workers and musicians for age 13 and over, which is referral only. Additionally, there is an after-school wellbeing project working with schools (referral only) for children age 5 to 10 and their parent or guardian. This will have a family therapist, counsellors and youth workers. This will involve things like play therapy all the way to cooking. Why do you think providing this support and having a support service available is so important? Having worked in this sector for some time, I have so often seen young people getting lost in the system or unable to access support even though they were crying out for it, sometimes having to wait 18 months on a waiting list. With the transition of child to adult services, I have seen more and more 16 year olds waiting 18 months for support, only to be told that as they are nearly 18, they would have to transfer to adult mental health services, leaving them waiting yet again. I have frequently observed that those falling between the ages of 16 to 18 get lost and are often neither seen as a child or an adult. What do you believe to be the key issues regarding young people’s mental health? Young people are facing more and more pressures and so many have no choice but to deal with these things on their own. Some young people have found themselves homeless, out of the education system and with nowhere to turn. This can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, self-harming, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts or attempts.

31

We are also seeing an increase Elaine Keogh in waiting lists across the board for our LGBT community, with help for coping, depression, anxiety, family difficulties and abandonment becoming increasingly difficult to access. Young people often tell me that even once they have support, they often feel unheard and misunderstood by the people tasked with their care, which is why Livewire is involving young people in the mental health project through the incorporation of ‘peer mentors’. Do you think there is stigma surrounding mental health? Statements like, ‘They are doing that for attention’, seem to be a common reaction to those who speak out. I think people are doing amazingly at breaking down the stigma, however I believe there is still a huge issue around true acceptance and much remains to be done. What more do you think can be done to support young people suffering from mental health challenges? Is there anything you think the Saltash Town Council or government could do? Cuts have been made to mental health services across the board and councils are placed in an impossible position by the government– schools and colleges have had provision cut or sometimes taken away completely and this has directly led to the lack of support available when young people most need it. I truly believe that if young people were able to access support at the appropriate time, so many would be taking a different experience into their future. Reaching the heart and soul of all young people is our biggest challenge and one which Livewire Youth is over the moon to be doing for the community.

NEW COMMANDING OFFICER TAKES THE HELM Captain Rich Harris has taken up post as HMS Raleigh’s 43rd Commanding Officer. The 46-year-old is no stranger to HMS Raleigh. In 1993 he completed his Royal Naval Reserve confirmation course, as a rating specialising in mine warfare, at the base. Capt Harris went on to join the Royal Navy full-time as an Officer and previously served at HMS Raleigh as the Commandant of the Defence Maritime Logistics School (DMLS) between October 2012 and April 2015. Capt Harris said: “When I assumed Command of the DMLS I said then that it was the pinnacle of my career.  At the time, I had no idea that I would

go one step further and command the whole establishment of officers, ratings, other ranks, civil servants and contractors, who work tirelessly to produce our sailors of such high quality, which delivers the best Navy in the World.  I am delighted to return to Raleigh and I’m looking forward to continuing the work of my predecessors.” Capt Harris replaces Capt Ellie Ablett as the Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh. Capt Ablett left the establishment in August, after two years in charge, to take up a new appointment as the Head of People Capability at Navy Command Headquarters on promotion to Commodore.

BETTER Access

to Health

Patients in Saltash and the surrounding area are set to benefit from five new consultation rooms at Saltash Health Centre. The partnership project between GP Partners of Saltash Health Centre and NHS England saw the acquisition and redevelopment of the former Registry Office Building, to convert into five consultation rooms, accessible from the existing surgery. The aim is to serve the area’s growing

population and their health needs and improve patients’ access to medical services. Dr Birte Morris, Senior GP Partner at Saltash Health Centre, was delighted that after many years of negotiations and planning, the much needed additional space will be available for patients of Saltash. She said, “We have taken on additional medical staff including Paramedics, Musculoskeletal and

Mental Health Specialists, and there is significant pressure on clinical space. The completion of the redevelopment of the former Registry Office only represents Phase 1. We are in the process of negotiating Phase 2 which will involve redeveloping the rest of the building formerly used as the Community Clinic.”

The new space will house the “Acute Assessment Clinic” run by Paramedics, as well as the Nurse led Minor Illness Clinic, both overseen by the GPs. It is hoped to also offer a Minor Injury Clinic, when funding is secured from NHS England/ NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group. A ceremony to mark the completion of the project was held on the 10 September, when the Mayor of Saltash, cut the ribbon to open the new wing. Teresa Lindeyer, Chair of the Military Kids Club Heroes Group, donated several murals painted by local children whose parents serve in the armed forces. She pointed out that the local community offers a sense of belonging to these children. Drinks and food was kindly donated by Waitrose’s Community Matters Representative, Sophie Jarvis.

GO LOLA GO!

community news Boardmasters takes place on top of the luscious clifftops at Fistral Beach in Newquay each year, with huge celebrities from the music and entertainment world, entertaining the crowds and gracing the many stages. Festival folk from far and wide bring their tents, campervans, sleeping bags (and umbrellas) to relax and enjoy the party atmosphere. Despite the rain this year, it was yet another successful event, especially for a local young Saltash lady Lola Tambling, aged 10, who has already shown immense talent in skateboarding. Her parents run the popular skate park in Saltash, Junkyard Skatepark, hence her keen interest in this sport. Each year, Boardmasters hold a mini ramp competition on the Canna Ramp at Fistral Beach, which is all part of the entertainment for guests to watch and enjoy. This event invites skaters and BMXers to take part from all over the world, and one can only imagine the intense excitement to watch these talented participants. There is also a local and international competition, and for the past two years there has been a women’s invitational competition. Womens’ skating has become hugely popular and has encouraged many Lola (middle) with fellow winners Beth (L) and Rianne (R)

inspirational participants. Lola Tambling is no exception, and has taken part in the competition for the past two years running, taking fourth place last year, and first place this year. She has continued to progress in the sport massively and at such a young age. The women’s invitational is not limited to any age; therefore, Lola had the wonderful and unique opportunity to skate with some of the best skaters not just in the UK, but from all over the world. Lola said, “I am so inspired by these females. It’s not competitive at all, we are encouraged to pull out new tricks, and love seeing each other shred.” Lola skated incredibly hard with precision and style. Her enjoyment, hard work and smiles helped her win the competition, and in typical ‘Lola Stylie’, she produced a smile on her face the whole way through. Even though the British weather had returned to its predictable mediocrity, it didn’t stop the girls shredding in between the showers. The rain did not dampen the spectator’s enjoyment of watching the competition and in true camaraderie, cheered them along. Lola was buzzing for the rest of the day, she truly is an inspiration to young ladies and gents who have a similar interest in this sport. Finally, Lola said, “I felt so happy hearing my name, feeling really proud, because I worked hard for it, and I got a belly stitch, so was glad when it was done! I was also happy for all the other girls for doing really well.” Lola was awarded a whopping £1000 in cash; however, you cannot put a price on Lola’s face when she skates. Huge congratulations also go to Rianne Evans who won second place and received £500 and Beth Rickard won £300 and won third place.

Summer camp gives amazing confidence A “Harmony Camp” was held during the summer holidays in order to make the upcoming Year 7s feel confident and ready to join Saltash Community School. They took part in various activities, including but not limited to: rock climbing, trampolining, dance and drama workshops. The children would come in every day and

by Louise Venn participate in a selection of games and activities before heading off to their various workshops, stopping to socialize with others at lunch time. Not only did this improve the confidence of the Year 7s, it also improved the confidence of the Year 10s (now year 11s) and Sixth-formers who ran workshops, became home group leaders, and camp directors. They had to work as a team to overcome problems and create solutions. Mr Feldwick said “This is what we want, Sixthformers and Year 10s working together to create something amazing.” Overall the three days were very successful and you could definitely see how much more confident everyone was by the end of the week, proving that it was definitely worth the time and energy that was invested into creating such a positive and rewarding experience for all.

First Day at School Thrills New Year 7s The first day back is an especially exciting day for new Year 7s who have moved up from primary into secondary school. I’ve been interviewing the new Year 7s, and their reactions to arriving at their new school. Students from 7 KS said ‘’Yes, I like school so far and have no worries about anything yet,’’ and ‘’I love school so far and am looking forward to the rest of the year.’’ Other students from 7 TH said ‘’I like this school

Jo Beer Wonderful People Shine

Recumbent ©Jo Beer

The exhibition - right under the Brunel Bridge at Saltash Waterside, PL12 4GT - is open 10-4 daily.

Portraiture is a challenging artform – both for the artist, hoping to satisfy the paying client and for the sitter, wondering what feature, characteristic or quirk might be revealed by the painter’s perceptive eye. Jo Beer’s eye is penetrating. Beyond the confident physical likenesses she achieves, she peers beneath the skin to find the character and to let it show through and Comment by John Forster irradiate the image. Her style is readily identifiable. Broad but meticulously controlled brushstrokes build up the flesh in sharp-edged shapes, jigsawing together to create the whole. Whilst this creates a faceted surface, it draws attention to the colours and tones that define the skin. Only occasionally does Jo choose to blend the colours to create a more photorealistic result. Often a blank grey background serves to complement and promote the palette. This lack of context – the roomscape - may seem a missed opportunity to tell the story but the stark isolation of Jo's plain backgrounds focuses the attention onto the figure, the skin, the hair, the clothes, to reveal the sitter with straightforward honesty. If you want a flattering, idealised portrait – a digitally enhanced Instagram delusion – don’t ask Jo; she will see behind the mask and let your true character shine.

Cheese and Beer: A Pairing Made in Heaven!

On 8th November Just Be are delighted to host an evening with Marc Bishop – Cornwall’s first qualified beer sommelier and St Austell Brewery’s Trade Marketing Manager. Marc will give us a fascinating insight into the world of small batch brews. These beers have real character and only rarely seen in very specialist outlets. To enhance the experience Marc will be looking at how these tasty ales pair with cheese and chocolate. As a prelude to the evening we take a look at some thoughts Marc has on the best cheeses to pair with a few of our favourite beers: Proper Job IPA and Cornish Blue A modern 5.5% abv IPA, it has plenty of resinous pineapple and citrus on the palate with a bitter back bone that does not hide away to keep your taste buds in check. Cornish Blue has been crafted on the edge of Bodmin moor. The cheese is mild, creamy and sweeter than other blue cheeses Eureka American Pale Ale and Cornish Gouda Eureka APA is a relatively new 4.9% abv beer from St Austell. Eureka has a hint of wild garlic on the nose. The cheese partner needs to be big and whole hearted to keep pace with Eureka and Mature Cornish Gouda is right up there. Made by a Dutch

family that moved to a farm near Looe in 1998. Bad Habit and Cornish Brie Bad Habit is a wonderful deep golden Belgian style Tripel. Sweet, spicy and orange zesty with plenty of condition and a bit of yeastiness, plus at 8.2% it will solve all your problems. For its cheese partner the zestyness of this beer will cut through a thick creamy adversary so I choose a ripe Cornish Brie match up to this beer. Mena Dhu Cornish Stout and Cornish Yarg Mena Dhu Cornish stout is famously brewed using a blend of six different malts. At 4.5% abv this stout has the full six pack of complex flavours you would hope for. The aroma has a certain smokiness and bacon about it whilst the palate is Camp coffee, dark chocolate with an underlying liquorice that offers a sweetness complemented by slight burnt bitter finish. There is no doubt that the masterful Cornish Yarg cheese is a brilliant accompaniment. Creamy and crumbly, rather like a Caerphilly, it has a slight tangy lemon flavour and the edible nettle rind imparts more earthy and herbal flavours. Looe

Looe saves the day enabling the event to go ahead. With another £10,000 still needed to provide additional safety arrangements, the group have pulled out all the stops to make the new target. With Looe Music Festival in administration, and to avoid any confusion, the new event will be called Looe Saves the Day - a suitably appropriate new name! So what can you expect from the new event? With no legal access to the plans, people and database of contacts, sponsors or volunteers for the original event, Looe Saves the Day have done an amazing job at hitting the ground running and getting permissions from local authorities, gaining access to new venues and public areas as well as all the necessary steps it takes to create a safe and legal event. Well known bands to the local scene such as Vince Lee, Charlie Harris and The Countrymen

Article by Naomi Girdler

You may have seen the news recently - Looe Music Festival this year has been cancelled. Hundreds of upset festival goers took to social media to complain about nonrefundable accommodation, money wasted on festival tickets and overall disappointment. According to sources, the charity behind the event has gone into administration, hence why the festival was unable to go ahead. It’s always going to be a sad occasion when a much loved festival is called off, especially for a town like Looe, where once a year it seems to come alive with the hubbub of a popular music festival. However, try not to be too upset, all hope is not lost. Shortly after the announcement, the people of Looe took things into their own hands, instantly setting up a Crowdfunder page. Incredibly they managed to raise £30,000 in just 48 hours,

are performing throughout the weekend, with Sunday’s headline act of American soul singer PP Arnold an exciting addition to what could have been such a disappointing weekend. PP Arnold was quoted as saying, “I am so inspired by the humanitarian efforts of the people of Looe who have all come together and worked as a team to not be defeated by the acts of those who were responsible for the cancellation of Looe Music Festival. It is such a positive example of what can be achieved when people ‘Keep the Faith’ and turn darkness into light.” It’s always a leap of faith to launch into the world of events. Health and safety and other

infrastructure requirements always necessitate a considerable upfront outlay before finding funds to renumerate artists properly for their time. These considerations are sometimes forgotten by the general punter, who is used to downloading his entertainment for free. However, nothing compares to the community spirit, atmosphere and sheer joy we get from live performances and Looe Saves the Day promises to be no different. The event is running from Thursday September 20 to Sunday September 23. If you manage to get there, you will be part of something PP Arnold very special!

NEW VENTURE, NEW TIME,

SAME OLD PLAYERS

So packed is the Saltash events calendar in the weeks running up to Christmas, that Burraton Community Players’ newest production will take place on a Thursday! The players return to their regular venue of Burraton Community Centre on Thursday November 15, where they will perform their latest murder mystery. Combining their dramatic traditions, the players’ latest thespian venture will be the performance of Murder in Pantoland! This latest production has been scripted and directed by Leigh Hughes, with the evening melding murder, mystery and mirth, featuring

a variety of the regular troopers in a range of unfamiliar roles. A familiar fixture of Players productions, a free pasty is provided for sustenance and stimulation as they grapple to unravel mysteries and counter accusations, clues and red herrings. The show will begin at a slightly later time of 8pm, and tickets are available at Piglets on Fore Street from mid October onwards. A one-off evening not to be repeated and certainly not to be missed. For further information please contact Leigh Hughes on 01752 842109.

ABOUT Burraton Community players The Burraton Community Players was formed back in 1990 in order to provide a dramatic outlet for local people of all ages from in and around Saltash, whether they wanted to be on stage or behind the scenes. Over the years, they have undertaken many stage shows from which the Players have donated some of the profits to local charities, raising thousands of pounds in donations since their first production years ago.

As a community group, they try to encourage people with a wide range of abilities, both young and old, to perform on stage. If you would like to join them, whatever age or gender, they would love to meet you! Whether you’re into singing, dancing, acting, writing or even working on costumes or sets, the Burraton Community Players is a friendly group that welcomes new members with open arms.
