Hello and welcome... ...to Love Saltash September edition. This is such a bumper month in so many ways we have squeezed so much content into our 68 page issue, as there is so much to shout about in our town. I’m sure everyone would like to congratulate all our young people who have picked up results from college and school and who are moving on to pastures new. It’s such an important time of new beginnings and we wish you all the very best as you take those tentative but determined steps into your futures. Like the seasons, small towns thrive on that cyclical way of thinking from the bursting forth of spring, the exuberance of summer, the bounty and storing away of autumn, and the quiet contemplation of winter – the waiting and consolidation that our seasons of death and

3

rebirth need in order to move on well. We have some goodbyes in this edition, as we take the time to remember the past, but recognise that life moves on. It’s clear that in order to do this well, we need all the generations interacting with each other, otherwise its so easy to fall into despondency if everyone around us is in the same season of life. Saltash has a proud history of considering the future of its younger people and working hard to ensure that they have the very best of choices. Let’s hope it has an equally engaged younger generation that considers the needs we have as we age, and endeavours to create good choices for older folk as well. We are best positioned to see our town thrive and grow in the best ways possible for generations to come if we stand together.

Local businesses get behind Safe38 road safety campaign

Local shops and business in south east Cornwall have pledged their support for the Safe38 road safety campaign. At each of the locations, local residents will be able to pick up a car sticker to display in support of the campaign’s aims. Safe38 are working with residents, community groups, councillors and MPs to campaign for Highways England to make immediate safety improvements to the existing A38 throughout its length in Cornwall. In the long term the group want to see a dual carriageway bypass from Saltash to Trerulefoot included in the governments upcoming Road Investment Strategy (RIS2), due to be finalised in March 2019. James Millidge, Chair of Safe38, says ‘The A38 between Saltash and Bodmin has an accident and fatality rate that is more than twice the national average for a road of its type. The statistics are shocking, but so is the devastating impact on families, friends and communities when it is someone they know who is involved in a collision. Support for the Safe38 and its aims have been enormous with a collective drive towards action by members of the Facebook group and those who have attended the open meetings in person. While we know that this is not a new issue, and others

have campaigned before us, we are building on their good work and the momentum generated by recent interest from local government and other groups and are confident that we can push, in the short term for the urgent safety improvements and for a longer term solution by March 2019.’ Campaign supporters can now show their support by displaying a car sticker stating ‘I support a Safer A38’ or ‘Drive Safely’. Safe38 car stickers are available from the following locations: • Cloudbreak surf Shop, Carkeel roundabout, Saltash • Saltash Leisure Centre • Landrake village shop • Tideford Royal British Legion • Halfway House, Polbathic • Downderry stores • Menheniot stores • Blakes Bakery, Liskeard The car stickers are free, but a small donation towards the production of more stickers is appreciated. To find out more about Safe38 and to join the campaign visit www.safe38.org or visit Facebook Safe38

weaving a wearlde

Jon Starkie

community news Jon Starkie is a fantasy author based in the Saltash area. He has recently published his first young adult novel ‘The Woven Wearlde’ which will be the first of three in a series entitled ‘The Wearlde World’. The word ‘Wearlde’ is derived from the name of the area in Cornwall (Wearde) Jon with in which local mythology his book, is heavily rooted into the ‘The Woven storyline of the book, as well as Wearlde’ Nordic mythology. One of Jon’s main inspirations for writing ‘The Woven Wearlde’ was the subject of the “light side and the dark side of reality, in which in-between lies the reality in which The Wearlde exists.” He also intended to make the reader wonder about how a world would be if one core element of reality/society was out of place or missing entirely. Jon has been often described as a ‘visual writer’ and has stated that writing a novel is a lot like, “weaving a world.” He says he sometimes believes that reading is a form of telepathy, as the author is communicating their thoughts to the reader. Jon quit teaching chemistry ten years ago in

11

order to pursue his dreams of being an author. He says that he used to teach is students through storytelling, as it felt very natural for him. Since then, he has written several short stories and newspaper articles. Over the past four years his biggest project, ‘The Woven Wearlde,’ has been in development. Local graphic artist Ambika Olney has worked with Jon on cover art, the map of the Wearlde and the book’s website, and the book has recently been published independently by Jon on Amazon. Elements of fantasy, sci-fi, mythology, faery and what Jon refers to as ‘round the fire storytelling’ have all gone into the making of this novel. Other novels that contain these elements, such as Lord of the Rings, have heavily inspired Jon and his creative process. He also believes that reading has an addictive element to it, which he claims is because reading is, “a form of escapism that can, in a way, transport the reader to another world.” Jon Starkie is a very talented writer and was a delight to talk to when we met.

editor’s footnote

Jon wrote intentionally for a younger audience, as did J.K.Rowling, so I bought the book thinking to pass it on to my daughter. I read it, in one sitting, without stopping to eat or drink, and completely ignored daughters, housework and everything else for 24 hours. It is fast paced and holds interest (clearly, I was addicted!). Jon took years to create an entire world from its inception, so I did feel a bit sacrilegious gobbling up his work so quickly. Karen Pilkington Creating is something that makes us human – Jon’s novel explores not just his own fantastical imagination, but what happens when other darker emotions are manipulated to pull apart, mis-create and un-do. After enjoying “The Woven Wearlde”, adults and older children will eagerly await the sequel.

Plastic; the “abundant” material that adds convenience to our daily lives. Let’s face it, who always thinks about where that plastic bottle goes after we’ve finished with it? After all, ‘it’s only one bottle,’ says 10 billion people . We are living in a disposable world; consumerism is at an all-time high and everything is considered throwaway. Due to this ignorance, huge quantities of plastic are ending up in our oceans with cataclysmic effects. With the levels of plastic increasing at an alarming rate, the fate of our oceans relies on human intervention. Ironically. Fed up with the amount of plastic debris polluting our coastlines, a group of volunteers have acted to tackle this colossal issue. Fathoms Free; set up in 2014 by Rob Thompson is a conservation group consisting of both divers and non-divers. By arranging dives around Devon and Cornwall they manually remove plastic from the ocean, alongside ‘ghost gear’-abandoned fishing gear that potentially harms marine life. On the first dive, 70kg of marine litter was extracted, this just being a small proportion of a mass scale problem as millions of tonnes of plastic enters our oceans annually. Plastic pollution not only contributes to

17

vast deaths of marine life and habitat destruction, but has similarly hazardous effects on humans too! As the plastic degrades, it gets broken down into micro-plastics; these microscopic plastics are ingested by plankton and are ultimately entering our food chain, negatively affecting human health. Zillah Robertson, local to Saltash, joined the group in 2015. Now the events coordinator, Zillah organises public awareness events, in addition to assisting the divers to help sort and catalogue the collected debris. Furthermore, Zillah produces artwork out of the collected plastic as an inventive and fun tool to educate children and encourage them to get involved with local litter picks. These remarkable volunteers are committing their time to face the challenge of cleaning up our oceans and slowing down the negative influence humans have on the marine ecosystem. Collective involvement is imperative; we all need to clean up our act in the fight to save our seas. If you would like to know more and want to support fathoms free or volunteer please contact them at: contact@fathomsfree.org or visit their website.

We all become quite enthusiastic when entering the family owned shop Tamar Fresh on the Tamar View Industrial Estate in Saltash, with inviting and tasty cuisine ingredients freshly placed on shelves, making us feel creative with our culinary ideas to cook at home. Tamar Fresh have been a prominent family business for 30 years to be exact, and pride themselves in employing a high volume of local people. The history of this successful family all began with Francis Barrett, joined by his three sons, David,

Nigel and Ian. Their passion and ethos has always been to please their customers and provide ‘local’ good quality produce. Whilst the company originally started as retail, its largest operation now is within the wholesale market. They deliver fresh produce from Land’s End to Aberdeen, co-operating through one of their sister companies W.V. Brahms, (chandlers to all types of commercial cargo vessels calling at the South West UK ports). Another string to the boys’ bow (amongst many other successful enterprises), is the popular restaurant Charlie Franks in Mayflower Street

the making! Plymouth, the name derives from Charlie and Frank, who were the grandfathers of the boys. Both of which were farmers in the 1950s. Charlie Behennah ran Baber Farm at St Dominick in the Tamar Valley and Frank Barrett was a farmer and race horse trainer based at Notter Farm, in Saltash. Charlie Frank’s aims to provide customers ‘good old local value produce’, as they would have done back in the day. They Grandfathers also offer live music every Charlie and Frank weekend, with a fantastic cocktail bar. Charlie Franks has made its name as one of the most glamorous restaurants in the south west, with a speakeasy vibe, hidden location and AngloAmerican dining to satisfy vegans, carnivores, and

those wanting to feel like film stars or gangsters on a great night out. It also hosts a fish and chip restaurant downstairs, and has more plans afoot. The owners are looking to open a new venture to feed hungry tourists, as well as supporting innovative ways to make the best use of their resources to help the homeless. Look out for Pound Kitchen in Plymouth City Centre coming soon! The Barrett family believe themselves to be very fortunate to have found such exceptional and loyal staff who know how to keep customers returning again and again, proving that “good old local” can hold its own against the biggest chains on the high street.

the bloom of ruth The Tamar Protection Society (TPS) hosted a Memorial Day in July for long serving volunteer and trustee Ruth Gilmore, who sadly passed away a year ago. The event was held at the beautiful Elizabethan gardens, behind Mary Newman’s cottage. Members of Ruth’s family travelled from all over the country to attend the event alongside members of other societies she belonged to, and friends at her final home in Janeva Court, Saltash. Benita Pedley of the TPS, commented on how lovely it was to have known Ruth. “She loved meeting people and passing on her very considerable knowledge of both Mary Newmans and Elliotts,” said Benita. “She also made visitors cups of tea and brought various delicious titbits to share with fellow stewards and visitors alike long before we thought of running a café.” Ruth was always busy and loved the garden behind

Mary Newman’s Cottage, which is a hidden delight. One of Ruth’s almost neverending jobs was deadheading the roses when she wasn’t attending to visitors. Because of her love of roses, her children have donated a rose bush in her memory, the aptly named Bloom of Ruth. As Benita went on to say, “All of us on the TPS Board miss Ruth’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the society’s history and find ourselves saying, “Ruth would have known the answer to that! But most of all we miss her laughter and great sense of humour. “Ruth’s attitude to the world was life-affirming and when she and her dear friend Pearl were together, they were an entertaining joy to be with.” Sandra, who volunteers to look after the beautiful gardens has already found the perfect place for the rose, which should be in full bloom next year and for many years to come.

puppy parenting Justine Bromidge and friends

business focus Justine Bromidge developed Puppy Parenting as she feels like dogs come in to your life for a reason, having owned dogs in the past. This encouraged her to start her journey into research and the study of dogs and puppies. After the passing of her dog, a gorgeous but rather headstrong German Shepherd whom Justine had re-homed when she was four; she was determined to get a puppy that she could ensure was well socialised from the start, and therefore ensure the best start for the puppy and for them as a partnership. After adopting a new puppy, she learnt a lot about puppy behaviours and training and found herself offering advice and helping out friends who had puppies but were struggling with certain issues, as well as her sister, who had

two rescue dogs - that’s when Puppy Parenting was developed. If you have a puppy or are thinking of getting one, Justine can offer you basic, practical advice and tips in your own home to make life so much easier for you and the puppy and avoid behavioural issues from developing. She covers settling your puppy, socialisation, toilet training, crate training, boundary, commands, and lots more all through positive reward based training to help build a positive, strong relationship for you and your dog. Her consultations cost £25 (for Saltash area) and it only takes one or two to get you off to a great start! For more details see her Puppy Parenting Facebook page or call her on 07855 637259.

SIX TOP TIPS for settling your puppy! •

27

Try to pick him up as early in the day as • possible so he has time with you to explore, get tired, and therefore hopefully settle a little easier at night. To not overwhelm him try to keep things calm for him. Introduce him to the garden and just one or two rooms in your house • for the first few days. This will also help you spot the signs for when he needs to go to the toilet and to help with his toilet training. Make sure you take him out to go to the toilet as soon as you get him home. Then after every meal, sleep, play and drink, and at least every 2 hours, give him lots of praise • when he goes outside, but don’t punish him if he has an accident in the home, as this can worsen the situation.

Correct use of a crate can help to make him feel safe and secure, especially if you have young children as it gives him a safe place to go when he wants some peace - but remember to teach your children to leave him alone when he goes there! Your puppy must have boundaries, just like children. You need to decide and agree on these before he arrives and be consistent from the start (for example, not allowed upstairs, jumping up at people, etc). This will help him to see you as being the leader, rather than him. Last but not least, to truly settle him you need to have lots of patience and time. If you are working full time, it probably isn’t wise to consider adopting a puppy.

Simon Young

community news Many people who have had such an impressive career of military service as Simon Young would perhaps be content to retire quietly, swopping stories with former colleagues at reunions, and detangling the knots of stress and tension from decades of being on the frontline of some of the most troubled places of modern times. Simon, instead, has opted for a further career which continues to challenge and test his abilities, to try and find ways of establishing order to unpredictable circumstances, as he explores the movement of watery paint on the page, combined with the simplicity of strokes required for that elusive result. Simon describes his 38 years of active service as very much a team effort, whereas his skill as a watercolour painter is self-taught and continually self-examined. Simon’s work is fast, energetic, and prolific. It also forms a bridge for many complexities and paradoxes that are part of his life. In 1969, he could have gone to art school, but instead joined the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment as a junior officer. He continued to paint and sketch throughout his 38-year military career, preferring the very portable medium of watercolour as he was in the field so much. On his eventual retirement, his wife led him to a waterside property in Saltash with an everchanging view; so, although Simon reckons the best sketching days involve walking for an hour before settling for two, he has produced some beautiful pieces of work from the bottom of his garden. And, although used to a life where tight security and privacy was the norm, he has been part of Drawn to the Valley Open Studios for several years now, opening his studio at 7 Coombe Road, Saltash to the public from 10am to 5pm, 22-30 September. In addition to supporting the usual Military charities, this year he is selling his work to profit

31

Alabaré Plymouth Home for Veterans, of which he is an Ambassador. As a high-ranking officer, he was accustomed to dealing with men and women en masse, now he can see for himself how one life at a time can be turned around by the timely intervention of the charity to provide accommodation and support for vulnerable, homeless and marginalised people. The Alabaré charity runs eleven homes for veterans in Wales and the South West, providing supported accommodation for those who have served in the UK Armed Forces and are homeless and in need of support (perhaps due to depression, PTSD, ill health, unemployment, family breakdown or similar). Alabaré can be contacted on their website, www.alabare.co.uk. Their reception team are available from 9am to 5pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 9am to 1pm on Tuesday and Friday on 01722 322882. Open Studios run from 22-30 September 2018. Almost 100 artists from the Drawn to the Valley art collective in Devon and Cornwall will be exhibiting their work to the public in their own work spaces and venues. It’s a chance for the public to meet the artists and purchase unique pieces of art from across multiple disciplines. From paintings and printmaking to sculptures and jewellery, all the pieces have one thing in common – they were made by artists living and working alongside the River Tamar. There is no charge to visit – artists are more than happy that you just come and look, although delighted if you want to buy their work. Simon is the Saltash representative of the art collective and is the only Saltash based participating artist this year, but there are 18 in the Callington area. Details of artists, studio opening times and how to get there can be found in the brochure to be published by the end of August and downloaded on their website, www.drawntothevalley.co.uk.

SALTASH’S VERY

Article by Dylan Ellis

OWN IRONMAN! Earlier this summer Ed Buckingham competed his first Ironman distance triathlon in Shropshire. The event comprised of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. This was to be achieved on a hot and humid day in June in the space of just 17 hours. The preparation for this challenge started six months prior. On Boxing Day, Ed started

his journey on a weekly training programme covering the three disciplines. The first few weeks were a very moderate introduction but as the weeks went by the training intensified. Preferring the real outdoors instead of gyms, he faced whatever southeast Cornwall threw at him. Horizontal rain and hail storms pelted his face, and at times it took several minutes reviving his hands and feet after the exercise.

37

community NEWS

As the training got harder, Ed had to eat more. Ironman is not for losing weight, as you are burning more calories than you are gaining. So, Ed was forced to change his eating habits in order to stay healthy during the event. Three weeks prior to the event, Ed explained that he, “started to taper, as if his body was getting used to not being knackered all the time.” He knew that once the day arrived, he would need no incentive or motivation, as he was well prepared. His only concern was the weather he was going to run in, but apart from that, he was confident.

He finished his swim with a time of 1hr 5mins, coming out in 11th position. The bike ride was completed in 6hrs 23mins leaving him with just the run. The run was all about summoning the last amount of physical energy in the body, turning to the mind to carry you through the pain of going beyond 9hrs of exercise. He managed to complete the marathon in 4hrs, finishing with a time of 11hrs 28mins, 2nd in his age category. He was euphoric to say the least, completing the challenge with plenty of endeavour, commitment, passion, hard work and a lot of Cornish spirit and humour.

THE WAR TO END ALL WARS

community news Article by Roy Perring

August 4th saw a special commemoration of Britain’s declaration of war against Germany that announced the Great War. The commemorations included a life size metal “Silent Soldier” in the Memorial Peace Garden in Alexandra Square, Saltash, unveiled by the Mayor of Saltash, Councillor John Brady. Around 130 invited guests attended A moment of prayer including several Saltash Centenarians. The tribute to the fallen included a Piper and Bugler playing the Last Post, an exhortation and Piper Lament, a bugler reveille. Eleven year old Lerryn Willcox read Rupert Brooke’s poem, “The Soldier”. 140 local men died during the 1914 - 1918 conflict. Reverend Jonathan Budd, President of Saltash Churches Together, dedicated “The Silent Soldier” and offered words of Prayer and Peace. Reverends Cathy Sigrist and Tim Parkman also gave addresses and the Mayor’s Chaplain, Father Ian Hellyer offered words of Prayer. Some guests took the opportunity to visit the WW1 trench recreation at the nearby Saltash

Example of a WW1 trench at the Saltash Heritage Museum Heritage Museum. The event was an opportunity to see the locally produced Poppy Carpets which were exhibited in the gardens of St Nicholas and St Faith Church. The organisers believe that the carpets which have over 25,000 poppies entwined into hessian cloth could be one of the largest display of poppies in the country. The commemoration is a part of an ongoing project by the Great War 1914-1918 Commemorative Events Committee with the aim of commemorating and honouring the World War One dead including 140 men, who came from or were associated with Saltash. It has also been discovered that 44 names of those who died during WW1 are not inscribed on the town’s War Memorials. The committee have been fundraising to provide a scroll with the missing names on. It will be framed and put on display. Next year the Committee have pledged to tackle highlighting and displaying the missing names of WW2 The veiled Memorials in the same ‘Silent way. Soldier’

MISSION YOUTH FUN DAY coming TO SALTMILL park Article by Charlotte Carpenter

Saltash Town Youth Council are hosting their second Mission Youth event on September 15 and this year it will be hosted by Saltmill Park. Last year it was at The Core Youth Project and was a huge success with local youth organisations coming together to showcase the activities they have to offer young people in our town. We are extremely fortunate in Saltash to have so many organisations offering young people a wide range of activities, support and opportunities. Saltash Town Youth Council (STYC) wanted to organise an event, which would showcase this fantastic work, and show young people who may not be involved in projects just what they were missing! This is how Mission Youth evolved. This year we will be working in partnership with Junkyard as they host their Skate Jam at the Saltmill Skatepark which promises to attract young people from all over the county. Junkyard co-director, Steph Tambling said, “the

fun day will include a skate, BMX and scooter competition at the skatepark. Registration will open from 10am, full info on times and schedule will be posted on Junkyard and Saltmill Skatepark Facebook. It’s going to be a rad day and there’s lots of prizes up for grabs, so get it pencilled in your diary!” In addition to this, each youth organisation will be hosting a challenge, for example you may have to put up a tent with the scouts or take part in a tug of war! For each challenge your team completes you receive a stamp and the team with the most stamps wins a trophy! You can include the whole family too, no age limits, this is something everyone can join in on! There will bouncy castles for the little ones, BBQ, ice-cream van and refreshments so bring your picnic blankets and have a fun and FREE day out with the family! Saltash Town Youth Council would also like to thank Groundwork South who will be supporting the event.

sound healing in a yurt

is like coming home

Article by Teresa Wicksteed, qualified Sound Healing Practitioner

I am now practicing Sound Healing in a Mongolian Yurt in my garden overlooking the sea. Actually, its correct name is “Ger”…which means Home. Entering the patterned wooden door of the Ger is a home-coming experience: the overwhelming feel is of comfort, stillness and safety, almost womb-like, and feeling protected from the intrusions of the outside world. It is a circular space, with no windows, the light coming through the Crown (Toono) at the apex in the centre. All the structures and materials used in Ger construction possess special symbolism. Authentic Yak wool is used in the wall insulation, pliable larch wood in the lattice of the wall,

(Khana), connected with leather ties, and horsehair rope ties connect to the roof. My Ger came from Mongolia in May, from the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar on a ship to Southampton, thence to Cornwall, then expertly installed by specialists Alicia and Joe from KentsofCornwall.com . The acoustic quality in my Ger is quite amazing; the insulated walls and circular form prevent external sounds from intruding on the deep calmness of the space, allowing the toning sound of my voice and instrumental sound to be directly focussed for the client’s experience. If you would like a free first appointment in my dedicated healing space, please email me on teresa@teresawicksteed.co.uk for details.

Saltash Deputy Mayor Gloria Challen with winner Gary Pavey

THE BRUCE REID TROPHY continues brucie’s legacy Article by Kaye Bonner

The 15th Saltash Town Golf Open Championships got underway on Saturday 21 July with an enthusiastic team of over 104 keen golfers, who tee’d off under blue skies and sun this year. Many of us ‘locals’ will remember the enigmatic character of Saltash Town, Bruce Reid, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Bruce was the original founder of the Golfing Championships back in 2003 with his friend David Carter. Bruce was well known for his enjoyment of socialising with his many friends and family and his great love of golf, henceforth, Bruce thought that this was an ideal opportunity to raise monies for local youth charities. We all remember Bruce’s self-deprecating sense of humour and he was always ‘up’ for a giggle with a pint or gin and tonic in hand, whilst sharing stories of his life around the town of Saltash. His much-loved wife Ed, whom Bruce adored, was his number one fan and she too presented prizes and sponsored holes. Richard Keith, Bruce and Ed’s neighbour and close

friend, had assisted them since 2012, and together they ensured the event was always on the local golfing calendar as an event not to be missed. The club has helped many local youth organisations over the years to include:• Saltash United Juniors • Saltash Boxing Club • St John’s Ambulance • Livewire • Beavers This year’s event raised funds for the Town’s Youth Band, to purchase new uniforms. This year’s recipient of the new Claret Cup now renamed ‘The Bruce Reid Trophy’, was Gary Pavey, with an impressive 45 points. Runner-up was Shaun Matthews with 42 points and the traditional wooden spoon went to Chris Wood. The Saltash Deputy Mayor Gloria Challen and her consort Neil were delighted to present the ‘new’ Trophy to Gary, after everyone observed a minutes applause in Bruce’s memory. Next year the Golf Open Date is July 13th 2019. Bruce Alexander Reid loved to be amongst his many friends, he will be sorely missed, but will be remembered through the ‘new’ trophy in his memory as a warm, funny, and honourable man who loved helping people and raising monies for local ‘youth’ charities.

SECRET GARDEN PARTY

set for MounT EDGCUMBE

Imagine mystical woodlands, smugglers’ coves and a historic mansion built nearly 100 years before the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth to America - it’s the perfect setting for a magical garden party. Mount Edgcumbe’s Secret Garden Party takes place in the Grade I Listed house and stunning Earl’s Gardens during Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23. Around every corner there will be something new to experience, whether it’s a daring circus performer, a selection of different dance groups fizzing with energy, a story teller enthralling the children or a magical character popping out to say hello! An exciting range of talented musical performers will be entertaining visitors - some on small intimate stages, others playing to the crowds.

There will be an eclectic range of artisan makers and producers to discover and a whole host of local food exhibitors with their culinary creations, many of them completely new to the marketplace. And when it comes to refreshments, there is the extra special Earl’s Tea Party to enjoy, to say nothing of a distinctly celebratory Gin and Prosecco Bar. A packed programme of entertainment to delight the whole family will run all weekend - the imagination of organisers Miss Ivy Events has run wild with ideas, so be prepared to spend the whole day in this idyllic setting - bring the picnic blanket and let the surprises commence! Adult tickets cost £5 per day, to include a glass of Prosecco, tickets for children aged five to 16 cost £2 and under fives enter for free. Regretfully only assistance dogs allowed.

community arts at calstock arts The builders of Mount Zion Methodist Chapel, Calstock, in 1910, certainly knew a good spot, although it was not until a grant from the Arts Council in the 1990’s enabled Harry Chambers of Peterloo Poets to uncover its true potential. Harry, sadly now deceased, had the vision to replace the solid brick back wall with glass, flooding the inside with light and the stunning view of the River Tamar, fields and viaduct. Calstock Arts took on the running of the building in 2010, and a combination of its beauty, great acoustics, and volunteers hard work continue to bring a host of sought after performers to Calstock. World class folk, classical, and jazz musicians give a good report on how well they are treated by the venue, which opens more possibilities of attracting acts from London agencies, recently including televised comedienne Shappi Khorsandi. Kate Gamm is responsible for programming, Ian Craft for social media and PR, as well as helping run the well-stocked Gallery Bar. They are well supported by a host of local people who give their time and services to ensure this gorgeous venue continues to bring

revenue and visitors into the village. The Old Chapel is licensed for civil weddings and is available to hire for all kinds of events and private parties. The ground floor has capacity for 120, and the lower ground, has recently been refurbished with a professional kitchen and seating for 45 at tables. It also hosts a community cinema, workshops, and corporate events needing wifi and a state-of-the-art projector screen. If you are planning an event, the venue is not just unique and kept beautifully, it is also reasonably priced, and there are numerous air bnbs and accommodation nearby. It’s exciting to see how Calstock Arts has drawn well known acts away from the big cities, and how it is run as a charity committed to offering a diverse range of arts events; conserving the historic building for use by the local and wider community and developing a comprehensive arts education programme. They welcome enquiries from local people to share their passions and get involved. Contact on mail@calstockarts. org or leave a message on 01822 833183
