Hartley church announces its ambitious ‘Big Build’ Since its origins in 1862 in a garrison chapel in the Royal Dockyard, Trinity Church is no stranger to moving and adapting with the times.
Its Christian witness has continued uninterrupted by these moves, firstly to Wyndham Street, Stonehouse, then to Torr Lane, Hartley in 1928, where it is currently about to undergo another transformation with the launch of The Big Build project. The church, which celebrated its 80th anniversary in March, was originally the only Presbyterian Church in Plymouth. In 1971, along with all Presbyterian churches, it united with Congregational Churches in England and Wales to form the United Reformed Church [URC] of England and Wales. Its current active members felt that their present accommodation does not adequately match up to the requirements to meet their resolve in being ‘Trinity United Reformed Church, fit for purpose for the 21st century!’ Trinity’s vision is based on the belief that its church buildings have a profound impact on their ministry. The aim of the Big Build is to further equip and make best use of the buildings, in fulfilling the church’s mission in the neighbourhood and beyond. Mary McFarlane, a keen member and facilitator of the Big Build Group explained that they have endorsement right from the top, “Our grand plans were developed by John Marsh Architect MEB Design Ltd, and planning permission was granted by Plymouth City Council in October 2017,” said Mary. “At present there is an attractive worship area, not seen by passers-by, as well as adequate halls. However the ambience is impaired through a small unattractive entrance, and less than adequate facilities for people who are disabled,” Mary continued. “The Big Build Project proposal shows the rebuilding of the central area between the church itself and the hall, with a communal access approach for both able bodied and less able people to enter an attractive welcoming and hospitable ‘mingling’ area with a church office and improved facilities. “The actual build will sit easily, while respectively softening the severity of the original Presbyterian building. We desire to recognise the ‘aesthetic’ stance of the original buildings, while making the statement that the church is open and relevant.” The church is already a busy ‘hub’ for worship and many activities throughout the week such as worship and learning, lunch and film club, exercise and dancing and pastoral and welfare. The Big Build Group hope to create an improved and attractive place, welcoming and accessible, catering for the needs and activities of visitors and members with revamped utilities; a centralised place where all who enter feel at home; and a meeting/greeting area with a cafe where people can connect. Finding funding for the project, costed in excess of £888,000, is certainly a big step for the Big Build. Mary explained: “It is an act of faith as we feel both apprehensive and enthused, while trusting in God’s inspirational spirit, working with the help of all who feel the project is a worthwhile development, so that it will be achieved. If you feel inclined or inspired to donate to ‘The Trinity URC Plymouth Building Fund’ or wish to know more, please contact Mary at mcfarlanem@hotmail.co.uk

Jobs boost as Southway firm plans further expansion Southway-based Schneider Electric Controls UK Ltd is recruiting over 20 manufacturing and support staff, as part of an expansion programme.
Production capacity at the Southway Drive site is set to increase by 15 per cent, with a significant investment in advanced manufacturing technology, and new roles being created in assembly, maintenance, quality and warehousing. Part of one of the world’s leading technology groups, Schneider Electric Controls UK Ltd supplies heating control and energy management products. Growth is being driven by increased European and UK demand for underfloor heating controls, plus the success of the company’s new smart heating control system Wiser, launched under the Drayton brand in autumn 2017. Commenting on the expansion, Al Briggs, senior director - manufacturing operations, at Schneider Electric Controls Ltd, said: “Our expansion and recruitment plans signal positive times for Schneider Electric Controls UK Ltd as a British manufacturer. Investment in our production facility has allowed us to insource to the UK and sales are also rising as a result of customers choosing to work with British suppliers. “The summer is set to be a busy time for the Southway site, with high planned production volumes that we expect to rise even further as we head towards the next heating season.” Schneider Electric Controls UK Ltd currently employs over 200 staff in Plymouth, where controls have been manufactured under the Drayton and Eberle brands for over 50 years. The Wiser smart heating system from Drayton is one of the company’s newest innovations, offering room-to-room heating control via an easy-to-use app and award-winning radiator thermostats, designed and engineered in Plymouth. Interested applicants should contact TQR Recruitment by on 01752 252533.
Students’ hair-raising creations City College students have been drawing inspiration from the recent bouts of extreme weather to create ‘hair-raising’ hair styles for the 2018 Hair Show.
The annual event challenges hair and beauty students to create and design looks to present on the catwalk to a panel of special guest judges. From blustery barnets, to windswept wigs, the students were out to impress local industry experts: Kirsty Smith, fashion programme leader at Plymouth College of Art; Robin Bowler, senior stylist and owner of Bowlers Hairdressing and Nick Evangelista, of Nick Evangelista Hair and Beauty. There wasn’t a single case of Seasonal Affective Disorder in sight as the students’ creations elicited many oohs and aahs from the crowd. The guests were also treated to live dance and music performances. City College’s academy manager of Hair and Beauty, Tanya Head, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and apprentices to demonstrate their creativity to the public and representatives from our region’s hair and beauty industry. “The event was a great success and I am incredibly proud of the work they all produced - they blew the roof off. “We couldn’t have done it without support
from the performing arts, music, live events and catering students; they really brought the show together. This event truly showcased what these young people can do. I am sure they will all have successful careers ahead of them.”
Those interested in exploring a career in the creative industries can visit www. cityplym.ac.uk or call 01752 305300 for more information. There will also be a Course Information Drop-In at Kings Road on May 16 between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.

Conman: police warn residents in Plymouth
Plymouth’s popular Freedom Community Festival is back in June and is set to be bigger and better than ever before. The free community music festival takes place in Freedom Fields Park on Saturday June 2 and Sunday June 3. The event will include some of the best in local live music, family friendly activities, stalls and some catering delights including the revamped community cafe. One of the organisers, Jonathan Spurling said: “Since it began the Freedom Community Festival has won the hearts and minds of thousands of people throughout Plymouth with it’s vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere and with every passing year, it goes from strength to strength. “And that strength is largely due to the generosity of our many amazing volunteers and supporters who give up their precious time to help make our free event happen and give back to the City’s community.
Police have warned residents in Plymouth to be on their guard against a conman who claims to be a window cleaner.

to root out property market rogues
A welcome move, long overdue – that was the reaction from Mansbridge Balment Plymouth boss Darren Lawson as the Government announced plans for sweeping reforms to the estate agent industry. Under the far reaching proposals, agents will be required to hold professional qualifications and be completely transparent about fees, as Ministers seek to raise standards and root out rogue agents. Darren said the professional standards agents will have to meet – which will bring them in line with conveyancers, solicitors and surveyors – was only right and proper. Mansbridge Balment has a branch in North Plymouth at Woolwell Lane and a City branch in Mutley. “In recent years, at Mansbridge Balment Plymouth, we have been increasingly vocal about the need for tough reforms to our industry, driving out the rogue agents, bringing proper transparency to the property transaction process and making it simpler and more efficient” said Darren. “I am delighted that the Government has now sat up and paid attention to our calls and those of the many other agents who
consistently ply their trade with honesty and integrity. Like us, they have nothing to fear from these tough new measures, which will afford much needed protection to the consumer.”
Darren Lawson...reforms welcomed
Mansbridge Balment Plymouth is one of the few agents in the city fully licensed by the National Association of Estate Agents, (NAEA) an organisation which has also campaigned tirelessly to persuade the Government to introduce formal legislation to the industry. The reforms were announced by former Housing Secretary Sajid Javed, who says delays and complications during the house sale and purchase process causes unnecessary financial and emotional stress. He also wants to encourage the use of voluntary reservation agreements to try and stop sales falling through and to crack down on gazumping. Trading standards will also be given more powers to take enforcement action against agents, who fail to meet the new standards, which will include bans. “It is madness to think that people could entrust the most important purchase of their lives to someone who may have absolutely no experience in house selling and isn’t required to have an industry qualification of any kind,” added Darren. “Thankfully, the Government is doing its best to finally putting an end to such madness. It’s a welcome move that is long overdue.”
Globe-trotting student gastronauts gain European work experience
Globe-trotting students have returned with a host of job offers and work placement opportunities after five months working, touring and soaking up new cultures as part of a European travel programme.
The students, who study hospitality and catering at City College Plymouth, have been working all across Europe, feeding the hungry in Hungary, making pastries in Paris, and satisfying stomachs in Sweden and have all returned with offers of further work placements; and one student gaining a permanent job. Alanna, 19, went to Norway and worked as a patisserie chef in Bryggerikjeelleren Restaurant. She said: “It was a really cool adventure - I got to travel around the country and experience a new culture. This has been an opportunity for me to really broaden my horizons and catch that travel bug. I have learnt how to cope in high pressure situations, good timing and how to ski!” City College’s European partnerships officer, Cat Sheppard, said: “It is an incredible accomplishment that every single student has gained additional work placements and a testament to all their hard work. One student, Jordan, has even gained a permanent job and moved to Paris in April. “Each year our students really impress us
City College students who gained work experience across Europe
with their professionalism, and this group is no exception. “This project allows us to form important partnerships with colleges across Europe giving our students more and more opportunities to explore what the world has to offer.” Funded by Erasmus+ the students spent several weeks in different European countries
working in restaurants and hotels as part of the CHASE programme. The programme offers exciting opportunities for European participants to study, work, volunteer, teach and train abroad. For information about the hospitality and catering courses available, or how to get involved in Erasmus+ funded projects, visit cityplym.ac.uk/events or call 01752 305300.
Local fundraiser launches new St Luke’s charity shop
When it came to choosing the right person to cut the ribbon at the opening of its new charity shop in Southway, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth knew just the woman for the job! Maxine Carter, who lives locally, bravely had her head shaved on her 55th birthday earlier this year, raising almost £5,000 for the charity that cared for her father-in-law at its specialist unit at Turnchapel following his cancer diagnosis. Her head shave, which took place at the Falstaff Inn in Southway, was something Maxine had been planning for five years while she grew her hair long. Prior to performing the shave, hairdresser Jenny King divided Maxine’s hair into four plaits, each measuring 16 inches, so that they could benefit the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free of charge to children who’ve
lost their own hair due to illness. Maxine’s endeavour was supported by family and friends who sponsored her, and a raffle at the event further boosted her total. Speaking about her reasons for supporting the charity, Maxine said: “St Luke’s is important to me because of the fantastic work they do. My mum passed away 37 years ago this August and as a family we had no support from anyone, just a district nurse to visit once a day for personal care. It was really tough. “But when my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, it was St Luke’s who made such a
difference. He received great care and as a family we felt well supported. “I have been overwhelmed at how generously everyone has got behind my fundraising, and I felt very proud to be asked to cut the ribbon at the opening of the new shop.” There’s no stopping Maxine, who is taking her bravery to the next level and planning a skydive in aid of St Luke’s. She said: “I always say to people, you never know what is around the corner and one day they might need the services of St Luke’s. It is a local charity and every penny counts. They need our support so they can carry on the fantastic care they give.” People wanting to support Maxine can do so via her fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/ Maxine-Carter1

Charity with a big heart is looking for new trustees
HeartSWell South West is a local heart charity, providing essential lifesaving defibrillators to communities, schools and business, as well as raising funds to purchase specialist cardiac devices for use in complex heart surgery. HeartSWell also offer counselling and support services for individuals suffering with or affected by heart conditions. To find out more about the defibrillator programme or how to access the support services, visit www.heartswell.org.uk, email info@ heartswell.org.uk or call the team on: 01752 315 929. Over the years the charity has achieved some amazing results. The founders of HeartSWell successfully campaigned for cardiac services to be provided here in the South West and in 2001 HeartSWell Lodge opened its doors for the first time to provide accommodation for patients, carers and relatives to stay when travelling to Plymouth to undergo their treatment at Derriford hospital. The Lodge now sees over 10,000 guests stay each year and the charity is looking to raise over £1 million to expand this facility further, to meet the needs of patients in the South West. It is an exciting time for the charity as it embarks on a three-year plan to develop its services further and the charity is now looking for new trustees to join them on the journey. The Trustee Board plays a vital role in steering and supporting the charity’s development and it is looking to broaden the board’s skill base, knowledge and networks, seeking people who can help the charity to think long term and strategically; who can motivate, support and challenge HeartSwell as it moves ahead. For more information, to arrange a visit to The Lodge or to request a copy of the application pack, including a full role description, contact info@heartswell.org.uk

Bravery award for Devon & Cornwall Police control room worker
Julie Burgess, a resource deployment officer - sometimes known as a ‘dispatcher’ – for Devon and Cornwall Police has been honoured in the first national awards for staff who work in the control rooms of the UK’s blue light services.
Julie was recognised with a Special Recognition Award for Bravery and Courage in the APD Control Room Awards 2018. The awards celebrate the extraordinary and selfless contribution of behind-the-scenes staff who play a critical role in response to emergency incidents day in and day out, often dealing with harrowing and distressing situations, in control rooms the length and breadth of the UK. Julie showed phenomenal bravery during an incident on her way home from work in the Force’s control room in Plymouth. Chief Superintendent Glen Mayhew of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Julie was on her way home from the Force control room in Plymouth in January of this year when she saw a man on the wrong side of
the barriers of the Tamar Bridge. “Julie parked her car safely on the bridge and climbed across the bridge infrastructure to access the pedestrian cantilever and return back to where she had seen the man. “She spoke with the man and held on to him until officers arrived to bring him to safety. Her speedy response was key to saving a life.” Chief Supt Mayhew is commander of the Devon & Cornwall Police and Dorset Police Alliance Operations Department. He continued: “The police staff who work in our control rooms are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job, given the huge range of issues and incidents that they have to respond to and skills that they need. “Julie’s exceptional conduct during this incident is a reflection of the high standards maintained by all of our control room staff and we are all extremely proud of her.” Julie is trained as an ECC (Enhanced Crisis Communicator) who are used in their role to make contact via phone or text with people in crisis. Julie said: “ECC’s have been trained to

Their role is to provide an early intervention tactic to the force incident manager and control room supervisors when managing incidents of this type. “This assists in bridging the gap whilst negotiators or other assets are deployed to an incident. work of staff in critical control rooms, run by APD Communications, were chosen from more than 200 nominations and announced at an awards ceremony in Nottingham. APD managing director Mike Isherwood, one of the Control Room Awards judges, said of contact centre and control room staff: “Their amazing work is normally hidden from public view, so we’re delighted that, working with our partners, we have been able to give them the recognition and profile they so richly deserve.”
Luke Pollard criticises train cancellations Plymouth MP Luke Pollard has raised concerns after CrossCountry cancelled trains to Plymouth due to recent bad weather.
He has written to the Secretary of State for Transport saying it is unacceptable that the current stock of CrossCounry trains are unfit to withstand all year round weather conditions at Dawlish and Teignmouth. The engines on these trains has been known to short circuit when they are hit by the saltwater coming off the waves and sea spray. CrossCountry now starts and ends trains at Exeter when there is bad weather to prevent the Dawlish line being blocked by broken down CrossCountry trains. The CrossCountry train franchise is shortly to be re-let and the Plymouth MP has asked the Secretary of State to require future franchises to buy new trains with the ability to cope with poor weather. Current rolling stock lacks the capacity required to carry passenger demand and have a key fault that means they are unable to pass through Dawlish when the waves crash over the track at Dawlish and Teignmouth. The letter also asked whether the current CrossCountry franchise holder Arriva are breaching provisions by failing to provide services to Plymouth and Cornwall due to the frequent service cuts due to bad weather. Luke said: “Plymouth’s rail service was hit yet again recently as CrossCountry cancelled trains to the far south west due to waves hitting the track at Dawlish and Teignmouth. Plymouth is served by two train operators, GWR and CrossCountry and we need both fully operational to support our local economy. “The cancellation of trains due to bad weather is growing increasingly unacceptable. We need urgent action from Ministers to ensure that these trains are replaced with new rolling stock that can survive weather all year round. “It is embarrassing and damaging for our region that decades old Great Western Rail trains can get through Dawlish and the newer Cross-Country trains cannot in bad weather.”

Buffaloes boost for children’s wards Children’s wards at Derriford Hospital have received a £3,200 boost thanks to the fund raising efforts of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB).
Members of the organisation from Plymouth and East Cornwall joined together to raise the money by holding various events, including a skittles match and a Christmas dinner. They also held raffles and auctions, and even sold football scratch cards and pickled onions to raise funds. “I suggested that we raise money for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund (CHHF) this year,” said Brian Tack, a member of the RAOB. “I’d spent a lot of time in the hospital last year, having had three major operations, and I wanted to give something back. “Our original aim had been to
raise £2,000, so we are really pleased with the final total. We feel that, as long as it helps to make the children staying at the hospital a bit happier, then we’ve done our job.” “It’s such a lovely surprise,” adds Sue Rodgers, play service team leader at Derriford Hospital and fundraising co-ordinator for CHHF. “These funds will make such a big difference to the facilities that we can provide for the children who attend the hospital, and their families. “We’d like to thank everyone at the RAOB for their generosity and support.” To find out more about how to fundraise or make a donation to University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, visit www. plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/ fundraising
...and the Lions help out as well! Tavistock Lions Club have handed over a range of electrical appliances to the children’s wards at Derriford Hospital.
The Lions pledged to raise money for Christmas decorations in the wards - but the superb response to their bucket appeal meant they collected far more than was required for the decorations. Lions members approached the hospital to find out if there was anything else needed for the wards. As a result five fridge freezers and three TV/DVD players were supplied. The fridge freezers will benefit long term teenage patients for the storage of their own food, while the TV/DVD players will be installed for younger patents in Woodcock Ward.
Welcome to Whitleigh Big Local
Big Local is an exciting opportunity for residents in 150 areas around England to use £1m to make a massive and lasting positive difference to our communities. Big Local brings together local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live. Big Local is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and managed locally by the Whitleigh community.
How to get a new Community Centre
The initial results from our survey show that there is strong support for a new Community Centre, though there are a significant few with doubts, backed up by valid comments. The number of surveys completed has been a good start with 170 responses so far, however Whitleigh has an adult population of over 6000 so we need more responses from the community, as we need sufficient evidence of community support before we move to the next stage. A new community centre has much to offer the residents of Whitleigh but it must be the right solution: • in the right place, • with the right facilities and • with the fullest support of those who will use it. Unfortunately, getting to the right solution takes time. We at Whitleigh Big Local are just as keen to see a new community centre in Whitleigh but believe that it is not just for the few to have their say before this happens. Over the next few months we will hold several public meetings to help gather views and feedback. We will also be taking the new community van around Whitleigh to promote all the activities happening in your area but also so residents can talk directly to volunteers at the Big local about their thoughts and ideas for a community center. We are asking for community champion to help distribute the survey in their area, we have already had volunteers to promote the survey on Bodmin Rd, Taunton Avenue (although we need more) and parts of Budshead Rd. But Whilteigh is a big area so…if you can spare a few hours to help promote and advertise the survey then we can start getting a bigger picture of what Whitleigh residents think about a new community centre or venue. Please get in touch with Pippa at Whitleigh Big local either via telephone or through the webpage or you can email hello@whitleighbiglocal.org.uk
Social enterprises – what are they? A social enterprise is a business idea that has an additional bonus of supporting or giving back to the community some benefit. Whitleigh Big Local has teamed up with Unltd and created a fund for the next 3 years to help support social enterprises that benefit Whitleigh residents. If you have an idea or you just want to find out more then please come along to one of our introduction sessions. The next one is on May the 29th at Four Greens community centre from 12-2pm for more information contact PaulSquires@unltd.org.uk
Out and about with the community van - Whitleigh big Local has purchased a big panel van that can operate as a small meeting space or community venue. It can seat up to 15 people and is a lovely space to meet and chat with your friends. You will see it around the community over the next few weeks – so pop in and say hello to Pippa. If you have any ideas on how to use the Van to support a community event, then let us know. May: Women of Whitleigh Makers Day - Meet at Events: 17th Four Greens Community Centre from 11am-1.30pm.
Bring food to share and any crafts, arts or making techniques that you want to share with the group. 29th May: Information session on ‘What is a social enterprise?’ Four Greens Community Centre 12pm-2pm 9th June: The Big Lunch from 12pm-4pm. On Whitleigh Green, bring a blanket, some food and spend time with neighbors and friends. Free arts and craft activities. Brave Plymouth girl, Heidi Grace Searle aged nine, who lost her best friend Ella Block to sepsis at Derriford Hospital when they were just four years old, has raised over £2000 for the UK Sepsis Trust by having her hair cut off at Hair Jungle and screened live on Facebook.
Following in the footsteps of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, Heidi will also be donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust so that other children will benefit from her haircut. The Little Princess Trust make real hair wigs for children with hair loss through cancer, so two charities will gain from Heidi’s bold sacrifice. Heidi, who lives in Greenbank, said: “Everyone used to think Ella and I were twins because we looked so alike. We loved going on holiday together and giggled A LOT!” Heidi takes after her brave mum, Debra Searle, who singlehandedly rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. Debra said, “Heidi has a huge heart. She is raising money for The UK Sepsis Trust because they train medical professionals and the public to spot the symptoms. Tragically, Ella might still be here today if the GPs and hospital staff had correctly diagnosed and treated her for Sepsis.” Sepsis kills eight million people every year worldwide. In the UK, 44,000 people die, often because it is misdiagnosed - more than the deaths from HIV/AIDS and road traffic accidents combined. Fortunately, Heidi - who attends King’s School in Mannamead – was delighted with her new hair from Hair Jungle creative director Emily, who said: “Heidi is a brave and determined little girl and we are very pleased to support her in such a worthy cause.” “I might miss my long hair,” said Heidi, “But I think my new hairstyle is really beautiful and it’s great other children will benefit from the hair I’ve had cut off. “A BIG thank you and free hug to everyone who has helped me raise so much money for charity. I think Ella would have liked my new hair.” Donations can still be made at www. justgiving.com/fundraising/heidisearle Further information on The UK Sepsis Trust can be found at sepsistrust.org and on The Little Princess Trust www.littleprincesses.org.uk

Business is booming for online materials company
An old bread factory in Plymouth is being brought back-to-life as online business, Construction Materials Online, takes up residence in new premises.
The rapidly growing parent company of Roofing Superstore, Drainage Superstore and Insulation Superstore, currently based at Airport Business Centre in Estover, has brought forward a move into its prestigious new facilities at Burrington Estates ahead of schedule. Having outgrown its current offices, plans were made to re-locate to the new premises mid-summer 2018. But with more customers came a need for more stock and a bigger warehouse. This led to part of the team moving into the new location early. Construction Materials Online’s operations director, Callum Tasker, explained: “We have increased our range of products stocked and the
volume of stock due to customer demand, so it became urgent to get into the new warehouse as early as possible. “Whilst there’s still work ongoing in preparation for the complete office move, we were able to accelerate things to get the distribution area ready sooner. It’s no mean feat organising a commercial move like this, but I’m pleased with how smoothly it’s gone, and the dispatch team are excited and raring to go in their gleaming new warehouse!” Construction Materials Online collected the keys to its new Burrington Estates premises in January. It will now benefit from 15,000 square feet of warehouse – more than triple its original 4,500 square feet. The next phase is completing works to the offices, which will house the rest of the company. This includes each superstore’s team of expert customer service advisors, which set the company apart from
other online building merchants. Construction Materials Online is keen to create a dynamic new work space for its staff, and is working with local company Broadbase, the designers behind the Guardian’s offices to deliver its vision. Staff will permanently take up residence in Burrington Estates in summer 2018.
ABOUT CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS ONLINE As one of the UK’s leading online suppliers of construction materials, CMO is the parent company of three successful eCommerce brands, Roofing Superstore, Insulation Superstore and Drainage Superstore, selling over 50,000 products across its sites. With strong relationships with some of the world’s leading suppliers, including VELUX and Dupont, along with a focus on customer service, visits to CMO sites have grown by over 50% in the last 12 months. www. constructionmaterialsonline.co.uk
Project to fund rehab centre in Uganda
A crowdfunding project has reached its £10,000 target to build a new facility in Africa for people with chronic lung disease. Academics from the University of Plymouth are leading the project to build a pulmonary rehabilitation centre in Kampala, Uganda – which will help to train medical professionals and treat people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) from across the continent. COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Asthma and COPD are common the world over and, in the west, most often treated through the use of inhalers. But in Uganda, these treatments are expensive and seldom available, even if they can be afforded. The pulmonary rehab set to be delivered at the centre is an evidencebased intervention that does not involve drugs. Groups of patients undergo rehabilitation in a six-week twice weekly programme of exercise and education. Research at the University of Plymouth, led by Dr Rupert Jones and funded by Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust and UK Government Department for International Development, has shown that rehab worked extremely effectively in Uganda to improve symptoms, social isolation and return to productivity.
Dr Jones, part of the University’s Institute for Translational and Stratified Medicine (ITSMED), explained the importance of the work and the need to fund it quickly. He said: “Rehab is very effective in reducing breathlessness, improving social engagement, and reducing dependence. In many patients, rehab is life transforming. “Sadly, for the many patients who want to do rehab, since the research has stopped, there is nowhere for the rehab to take place.
“We plan to build a bespoke centre for pulmonary rehab in Mulago Hospital in Kampala. The centre will act as a permanent National Centre for performing pulmonary rehabilitation and for training staff from across Africa to conduct rehab to the highest standards. “Our research has shown how effective the treatment is, and we only had one month to raise £10,000. Every single penny will help us to build a centre to treat a neglected group of patients who are suffering from a devastating disease without treatment.”

Paintings will brighten up Derriford A collection of 12 pieces of artwork have been donated to Derriford Hospital.
Local artist, Richard ‘Dick’ Woollcombe was a patient at Derriford several years ago. During his stay he walked the many corridors of the hospital and thought they could do with some brightening up. Shortly after his recovery he donated a collection of twelve pieces of his own art – called The West Country Year. Sadly, Dick passed away in 2016 and when his son, Alan, was tidying out his studio, he found a further collection of 12 pieces of art. Alan has kindly donated the collection to the hospital and they are now on display on Level 11. Alan, his wife Mimi and Jane Miller, a family friend and volunteer at Tavistock Museum, visited the hospital to see the artwork on display. “My father would have been so happy that his set of Calstock Viaduct paintings had found a home at Derriford,” said Alan. “He always appreciated that the hospital has enabled his West Country Year paintings to reach a wider audience, and he would have been delighted at the way these have been displayed too. His family would like to express our thanks to the hospital.” Project manager at the Trust, Di Brimacombe, said: “I had the great fortune of meeting Dick three years ago; he was a very endearing, charismatic character. It was a real privilege spending time with him and discussing his vast collection of artwork. “Derriford Hospital is extremely lucky to be able to exhibit these art collections painted by Dick Woollcombe. “It was also very rewarding to see how happy the family were at the unveiling, with how we had exhibited the collections. There couldn’t be a better tribute dedicated to the legacy of such a talented local artist.” Hospital chairman, Richard Crompton added: “We would like to say thank you to Alan for being so generous and allowing us to display these lovely paintings on our wall. I’m sure Dick would have whole heartedly approved. These images will be here for many years to come.”

City unveils second commemorative plaque in honour of First World War hero
The second of four commemorative paving slabs dedicated to Plymouth and Devonport-born soldiers who received the Victoria Cross for their courage during the First World War has been unveiled on the Hoe. The slab is located near the Plymouth War Memorial, at the junction of Citadel Road and Lockyer Street and is in memory of Captain John James Crowe VC (28 December 1876 to 27 February 1965). Crowe was born in Devonport. His father John was a soldier who was garrisoned at Raglan Barracks. His mother, Catherine (née Turpin), was born and raised nearby at Cherry Garden Street. Crowe followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Worcestershire Regiment (amalgamated in 2007 with the Cheshire, Staffordshire and Sherwood Foresters Regiments to form the Mercian Regiment). By August 1914 when the First World War began, he was in France with the British Expeditionary Force. Having survived many hard fought actions, it was for ‘valour and zeal…of the highest order’ in the defence of the Belgian village of Neuve Eglise, also known as Nieuwkerke, that Crowe was awarded the Victoria Cross. On 14 April 1918, he showed ‘…an utter disregard of danger…’ and led two small parties in successful attacks on enemy machine gun and sniper positions. The commemorative slabs are part of a national initiative from the Department for Communities and Local Government to honour Victoria Cross recipients from the First World War and are being laid in the birth places of all those awarded the Victoria Cross during the conflict.

Argyle players back RNLI Mayday campaign Plymouth Argyle players are calling on people in Plymouth and the south west to support Mayday, the RNLI’s annual fundraising day
The RNLI’s Mayday campaign began on May 1 and will run for the whole month, with fundraising events taking place across the south west. This year, the RNLI hopes to raise £750,000 through Mayday, which will be used to fund essential kit for the charity’s brave volunteer lifeboat crews. To kick off the campaign, members of the Plymouth Argyle team have shown their support by swapping their football boots for the RNLI’s iconic yellow wellies. In addition, one of Plymouth’s most celebrated landmarks, Smeaton’s Tower turned yellow at sunset on May 1, in support of the Mayday fundraising campaign. The lighthouse will make a striking sight after dark, an unmissable reminder to residents and visitors alike to ‘do your bit, fund our kit’ and help to fundraise this May. Plymouth Argyle’s captain, Gary Sawyer urged the public to support the RNLI’s Mayday campaign: “As football players our training is pretty gruelling – we’re always pushing ourselves to the max in all kinds of weather conditions, but at least we know when we’re expected to perform! “That’s why I have so much respect and admiration for the volunteer RNLI crew members as they drop everything in an instant to respond to a distress call to go out on a rescue, no matter what. The photo shoot has been fun although there is a serious message, so I’m asking everyone to help this amazing charity continue its essential lifesaving work by supporting them this Mayday.’ Fundraising events are taking place right across the south west,
many with a yellow welly theme in a nod to the lifesaving kit that RNLI lifeboat crew members wear on their feet when saving lives at sea. Money raised through Mayday will help RNLI lifeboat crews to face the harshest conditions at sea with the best kit possible. It currently costs £1,598 to provide one all-weather lifeboat crew member with all of the kit needed when responding to the call for help. A recently-announced partnership with global brand Helly Hansen will see all-weather lifeboat crews supplied with new kit later this year, providing better endurance levels and greater freedom of movement for the charity’s crew members. RNLI fundraisers across the country will also be joining Smeaton’s Tower and the Argyle players in going yellow for Mayday – just like volunteer crews do every day to save lives at sea. Anyone who wishes to get involved can visit RNLI.org/mayday to register for a free Mayday fundraising pack or donate to the campaign online. You can also show support on social media, joining the conversation using the hashtag #MaydayEveryDay, or buy a yellow crew member pin badge. Dave Millford, Plymouth RNLI’s lifeboat Coxswain said: “RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews are willing to drop everything to go and save lives at sea when their pagers beep. The Mayday campaign is our own call for help, as we rely on the generosity of the public to help us continue our lifesaving service, which we operate day and night, 365 days a year. “Our crews rely on lifesaving kit, like their yellow wellies, lifejackets and helmets, when they go out in all weathers to save lives. We’re delighted to have the support of the Plymouth Argyle players and that Smeaton’s Tower will be joining us in going yellow this Mayday. We hope that many local people will be inspired to lend their support as well.”

Popular musical ‘9 to 5’ at Devonport Playhouse Plymouth-based No Walls Creative Arts are back with the fun, feisty and female empowering musical ‘9 to 5’ following the success of their previous production ‘Into the Woods.’ With music and lyrics by the acclaimed Dolly Parton herself, this musical sees three female office workers, revolt against their arrogant, misogynistic boss, and take control of the office. New club helping to create the next generation of Special Olympians After the huge success of Plymouth athletes at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles 2015 and the National Games in Sheffield 2017, Special Olympics Plymouth & District have teamed up with YMCA Plymouth to offer a new and exciting opportunity for local young people.
Both organisations have launched a new club for those wanting to try something new, get into sport, and start their journey to hopefully one day bringing back their own Gold medal for Great Britain. The new ‘YMCA Specials’ club will bring together the skills and expertise of both organisations to offer a truly inclusive club that hosts an array of sports each week. Session leader, Dan Gardiner said: “This new club is a great opportunity for young people with intellectual disabilities as well as physical impairments. It’s not just about competition, it’s also a fun club for young people to simply have fun, build their confidence and socialise. But beyond that, we also have the fantastic chance to offer pathways for competition through Special Olympics as well as progression to the over 16s Special Olympics club.” Sports include boccia, football, badminton, trampolining, table tennis, indoor climbing and many more. Using specialist coaches and equipment, all sports are designed to be as inclusive as possible enabling everyone to get involved. Trained staff help create a friendly and safe environment for young people to develop in their ability and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of sports. Jennifer, who is 10 years old and has autism, recently joined the club. She said: “I’ve tried so many sports that I hadn’t before, and the exercise is really good for me. I especially like doing boccia and I’ve made a lot of new friends at the club”. YMCA Plymouth has been offering a range of inclusive sport opportunities for young people for five years and Special Olympics Plymouth & District have been running their hugely popular adults specials club at the YMCA for over six years. Both organisations felt the time was right to work closer together and create new
opportunities for local young people. Andrew Robertson, YMCA Plymouth managing Director said: “Both YMCA Plymouth and Special Olympics believe in creating chances for people who might otherwise be marginalised or find it difficult to take part in traditional sport and activity. “We know there are hundreds of young people in Plymouth who could benefit from a club like this and through the years we’ve been delivering inclusive sport, we’ve seen it’s power to transform a young person’s life. I’d encourage anyone to come along and give it a try!” Cameron who is eight and has Cerebral Palsy and is a keen badminton player said: “It’s my favourite thing to to do each week. I’m trying really hard so one day I can go to the Special Olympic games.” The YMCA Specials club is held on Wednesdays from 4.45pm – 5.45pm at YMCA Plymouth in Honicknowle Lane. For more information about the sessions, visit www. ymcaplymouth.org.uk/inclusive or call YMCA Plymouth on 01752 201918 and ask to speak to Dan or Stacey.

Dive into fun at Royal William Yard from May 6, where a new family-friendly attraction will be waiting to meet visitors. Emerging from the harbour to take pride of place on the lawn, the Giant Squid will be there to stay for the summer.
This vivid-red, epic sea creature is a striking, acoustic installation, by an award-winning European art collective. Truly interactive, families can speak into the tentacles and eyes of the sea creature, which carries the sound into the centre of the structure. Crossing the ocean from its original birthplace of the Azores in Portugal, the Giant Squid was originally inspired by mythical landscapes and magical tales like Moby Dick and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. These tales influenced artistic collective, Moradavaga, who designed the sea creature, to serve as both a piece of public art and a communicative tool for children and families. Hailey Cattle, marketing manager for Royal William Yard, said, “We are delighted to welcome the Giant Squid to Royal William Yard, it is going to be an incredible spectacle and great family fun. We wanted to bring the lawn – a public space – alive for families through the day and create an incredible sight at night. “With the help of renowned international

We believe that each parent has a unique contribution to make to their children’s development and that children have a right to enjoy a loving relationship with both parents after separation. artists, we are creating something unique in Plymouth and bringing a beautiful space alive in a creative and exciting way, which is very much the spirit of all that we do at the Yard.” The fun doesn’t stop with the Giant Squid this summer; to further capture the imagination of visitors, families can hunt for the squid’s six friends by following a trail around the Yard. Playing with the Giant Squid and taking part in the trail are both free activities. Designed by illustrator Jack Viant; graduate from Plymouth College of Art, explorers receive a map and passport to find the Giant Squid’s six friends. Once located, adventurers must make a note of the letter each creature is holding and use it to spell out a six-letter word. On completion of the trail, armed with the secret six letter word, participants can then make their way to any of the cafés or restaurants to claim their prize. To help spread the word of the arrival of the Giant Squid, visitors can also capture their Squid selfies, sharing them on Facebook and Instagram, using the hashtag #squidfie, while also getting involved in naming the Giant Squid by visiting www. royalwilliamyard.com/giantsquid to submit suggestions. Friday of each month we have free meetings and invite MPs, local councillors, local businesses, anyone able to speak on issues that affect older people, to come and talk to us. These meetings are held in the Wolseley Trust Community Building (next to Sheila’s Café in Wolseley Road), behind the Co-op just down from Milehouse traffic lights going towards St Budeaux. These meetings start 10.30am and end at 1pm, many buses stop outside the Co-op and if you come by car parking is usually available. We also have regular social meetings and would like to advise everyone that these will now be held at the Oak Villa Sports & Social Club in Ferndale Road, Plymouth (PL2 2EL) just down the road from Weston Mill Cemetery. The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall. These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2. Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single £20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). to his heart. It was following the death of his beloved mum Dot, in May 2008, that he decided to donate all the money raised each year to St Luke’s. During the last few months of her life, Dot received care from St Luke’s and spent her last few days at the specialist unit at Turnchapel. Seeing first hand the dedication and compassion of the team there meant St Luke’s gained a special place in Cuz’s heart, which has spurred him on to raise an incredible £90,000 through Rockfest for the charity. Cuz said: “I’m blown away at how generously everyone has supported Rockfest, from the bands and the venue to the businesses who donated raffle prizes
and everyone who came to the event. A huge thank you to everybody who has gone the extra mile, including my wife Lyn and close friends.” “It’s absolutely fantastic to have raised this record amount for St Luke’s in our tenth year, bringing our total to £90,000.” Receiving the cheque from Cuz, St Luke’s community and events fundraising manager Nina Wearne said: “Cuz works tirelessly to make Rockfest the big success it is. “We’re so grateful as the money raised makes a real difference, helping us to continue providing specialist end of life care across the community, at home, in hospital and at our specialist unit.”

Make it a Med!
We may not always have the hot and sunny weather, but Mediterranean plants and gardens have always been popular and are gaining in popularity too. They evoke memories of sun kissed holidays and if done correctly are surprisingly low maintenance. It is easy to see why people want to capture the magic of past holidays in their own gardens, coming home from work on a warm sunny day and stepping out into a Mediterranean garden with a glass of wine is the perfect escape from a stressful day. Many of the plants in our gardens originate from warmer countries. With a changing climate, too, it’s now a lot easier to re-create an elegant, sunny courtyard or bring a touch of the Med into your garden with numerous varieties of droughttolerant plants and the right range of paving, gravel, pots, hanging wall pots and ornaments. Scent is very important in Mediterranean gardens. They tend to be filled with strongly
fragranced plants such as Lavender, Rosemary, Choisya, Rose and Jasmine. Knitters raise over £1000 for charities
The Lions Club of Plymouth held their annual sponsored knitting event at Emmanuel Church with a total of 54 accomplished knitters competing for the much cherished trophies. The ladies were knitting squares which, when completed, will be made up into various sized blankets and throws and distributed to hospitals and homes throughout the area. Trophies and prizes were awarded to the person knitting the most squares in a given time period, with an additional trophy presented to the person attracting the most sponsorship. The ladies were treated to tea and biscuits on arrival, a pasty lunch followed by jelly or trifles and a quick talk given by representatives of the two main charities benefiting from the day: John Branch from Diabetes UK and from Mrs Marie Hull of the local bereavement counselling service. During the afternoon, tea/coffee and cake were served, followed by the presentations of awards by Lion President Ian Hill. The contest for the most squares completed was a closely run competition with the top three contestants having completed eight squares each. The rows and stitches were taken into account on the last unfinished squares and by a close number, the first, second and thirds places were awarded respectively to Wendy Thorpe, Marcia Walters and Elaine Cook. In addition to the trophies each was awarded with a box of chocolates and flowers. The knitter who attracted the most sponsorship is yet to be announced once all the sponsorship forms and monies have been returned, but the total is expected to be in excess of £1,000. The Lions gratitude goes to all who took part and to the individual sponsors.
THE
Experience The background image on my laptop is a painting by William Holman Hunt called ‘The Light of the World’. This pioneer of the Pre-Raphaelite community of artists was renowned for his attention to detail in his paintings and ‘The Light of the World’ demonstrates this superbly.
In this painting Jesus Christ stands, with a lamp in his hand, at an old wooden door surrounded by a thicket. It illustrates God in Christ knocking at the door of the spiritual heart of mankind. Based on Revelation 3:20: ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.’ According to Hunt: “I painted the picture with what I thought, Chris Cole unworthy though I was, to be by Divine command, and not simply as a good subject. The door in the painting has no handle, and can therefore be opened only from the inside, representing the obstinately shut mind.” Hunt, 50 years after painting it, felt he had to explain the symbolism. The reason this painting is always on my computer is as a reminder within my own faith that

Bretonside carriageway closed for development work Drivers, bus passengers and walkers coming into Plymouth City Centre are being asked to bear in mind road changes as the Bretonside redevelopment progresses. Why we need knowledge and wisdom to face life’s ups and downs BY CHRIS COLE, FOUNDER OF CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH I have a responsibility as a human being and as a Christian for the choices and decisions I make. Without the freedom of choice to open the door of my heart to the knocking of God’s call, I will never find the reality of the ongoing experience of faith, hope, love and a deepening relationship with God. As essential as all three components of the spiritual journey are, the greatest of these is love and love is more than a feeling it is a way of life. It is this process of faith hope and love that takes us on a spiritual journey which can prove faith in the same way that rational thinking can prove scientific evidence. Faith can be proven in an individual’s attitude and character and observed through the good and tough times of a believer’s life. We need the balance of knowledge and wisdom to go through the ups and downs of life and wisdom is a foundation for life out of which come the deep issues of the meaning of life and the enduring values of our humanity. How do we handle the tough stuff of life? How do we love those who disagree or take offence at us? The answer may be through
a genuine life of true faith. We can become increasingly secure in God’s love and relational intimacy so that we end up living before the audience of One. We become a servant of all, but no man can rule over us. For many people within the Christian faith the Book of Proverbs 4: 23 -24 talks about the issues of life coming out of the heart. This is of course the spiritual heart of mankind. Where the genesis of faith, hope, love, courage and meaning are birthed. ‘Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put devious speech far from you.’ What we think and say can tear down and destroy people and we need to be conscious of not judging others lest we ourselves are judged with the same motive. We don’t know people’s stories or painful journey through life, which is why God says he puts the broken in families, which many church communities endeavour to become. A wise person once said. “If you find a perfect church, don’t join it because you’ll ruin it.” However, God says in Matthew 5: 43 ‘Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.’ Quite a tension to hold, but one that can bring us to peace?
