Key schemes must continue The political landscape has changed dramatically in Plymouth and much of the South West since we published the last edition. It’s clearly too early to say just how much impact the result of the General Election and local council election will have on Plymouth - but it is to be hoped that all the progress and success of recent years will not go to waste. Major developments in the pipeline such as the Drake Circus Leisure scheme, Mayflower coach station and the possible construction of a cruise liner terminal will transform the city and its fortunes in the coming years - providing they all go ahead. A lot of promises were made prior to the election about enhancing connectivity to Plymouth and the South West through improved road and rail links. Let’s hope those promises are kept. It is encouraging to hear about the latest proposals aimed at re-opening Plymouth City Airport under the banner of the FlyPlymouth campaign. With the Mayflower 2020 celebrations just five years away, the need for better connectivity has never been greater. Moving on to the content of this issue, we have our usual diet of successes, achievements, business profiles, property news and upcoming events. Plymouth Business Week - including the Plymouth Business Show - the Big Festival Weekend - including the Respect Festival - and Armed Forces Weekend are all coming up in June. You can read more about all of them in this issue. We also have Rosie Finnegan’s latest make-up advice and Kerry visits Eden on the Green for her regular Art Matters feature. Hope you enjoy the latest offering!

FitSteps is a unique dance and fitness programme devised by Strictly Come Dancing professionals Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite, who teamed up with former contestant and six times world swimming champion Mark Foster. It has been brought to Plymouth by professional dancer and teacher Jodie Anne, who has returned to her home city to set up her own business, Jodie Anne Dance, after five years of training and working in London. Jodie, 23, holds two FitSteps classes a week in between teaching dance at Italia Conti Plymouth and Geraldine Lamb School of Dance. The classes are held at the Royal British Legion in Crownhill at 10.30 to 11.30 on Thursday mornings and at Hele’s School, Plympton, at 7.30 to 8.30 on Tuesday evenings. As if Jodie wasn’t busy enough she has just launched her ‘Wedding Steps’ programme which includes choreographing the bride and groom’s first dance! “I work closely with the bride and groom to create the perfect routine for their special day; I can choreograph to any style or genre to suit the couple. Or they can just have some guidance instead of a full routine. “It also works hand in hand with FitSteps as brides can improve their fitness whilst toning for the big day.” FitSteps is for all ages and abilities and no previous dance experience is necessary – although some former dancers have jumped at the chance to get back into the swing of things: “Some of my ladies have danced in the past and they love it,” said Jodie. “And because this is solo they don’t need to find a partner to be able to do it. “The beauty of FitSteps is that you can do it at your own level, to your own ability. The ages range from FitSteppers in

have you moving like the Strictly stars! their 20s to ladies in their 80s, which is just fabulous. And noone ever gets left behind because all joiners are taken through the steps,” she added. Among the dance styles included in Jodie’s classes are the Tango, Samba, Cha Cha Cha, Rumba and Waltz: “All of the styles you see on Strictly are put into the FitSteps class structure,” explained Jodie, who changes her play-list every week so that her FitSteppers get to learn steps to new pieces of music: “We have quick and slow, such as Latin and Ballroom, so that people can enjoy all tempos.” And there’s more good news: “It’s possible to burn off up to 1,000 calories in a class but because it’s such great fun, it never feels like a workout. It’s cardio-vascular, it’s toning and

it works on every area so it’s good all over. And of course, you end up moving like the Strictly Come Dancing stars at the same time!” It’s not just the class that’s enjoying the experience – Jodie loves it too. The former Eggbuckland Community College student has been dancing since the age of five and always knew she wanted to dance professionally. Throughout her

school years she studied at Linda Mortimore and Ryan Moore School of Dance. After leaving school Jodie spent two years at Totnes School of Dance. Jodie auditioned for a place at London Studio Centre and received a Scholarship and gained a BA (Hons) in Theatre and Dance alongside an intensive dance course. During her time in London she performed on Sadler’s Wells’ West End stage and many theatres throughout England. She is now thoroughly enjoying running her own business back in her home town. She said: “I started to really enjoy the choreographic, creative side of dance and love teaching. It allows me to share all the knowledge I have learnt with the students I teach.” Jodie had to go through a strict (pardon the pun) assessment process to become an accredited FitSteps tutor which included attending an intensive training course. Jodie says all that hard work is now paying off: “The response to the classes has been brilliant. The people who’ve come to give it a go have absolutely loved it. We’re taking it one step further now by asking people what piece of music they would really like to learn to dance to, which is great fun.” And so is Jodie’s fabulous Wedding Steps programme. As well as helping the bride and groom with their first dance, she can also choreograph a surprise groomsman and bridesmaid dance. And she can help you get into the party mood with hen or stag events, with a two-hour dance session. Get in touch with Jodie to chat about the possibilities.

Heavenly homeware in Ham

Eden on the Green has been described as a ‘Heaven in Homeware.’ I was looking forward to my visit to this pretty shop, set back amidst a row of others on Ham Green. My first impression as I pulled up outside, was that there was ample free parking and easy accessibility. Su Clark, Eden on the Green's proprietor, greeted me warmly along with her gorgeous long-haired Dachshund. As I admired the beautiful displays, By Su told me about this little gem of creativity. "I opened Eden on the Green in July last year. I sell vintage bits and pieces alongside shabby chic furniture. It’s an ideal spot to find something to brighten up your home. As you can see, I have lots of mirrors of varying shapes and colours, softfurnishings which I sew myself, and I also run creative workshops as well." Looking around at all the redesigned and restored furnishings, Eden on the Green really is one of those shops that you’ll want to relax in and browse around for a while. Su told me that a good following of customers travel from as far afield as Callington, Looe, Totnes and Tavistock to purchase pieces for their homes. "Everything is unique," said Su. "Every job done is a labour of love. The prices are affordable and I am happy to take a deposit and keep an item back for a customer until payday." Su has previously worked as an arts and crafts teacher and is very experienced in interior design. She holds regular workshops for small groups on the premises. "Recently I ran an all-day chair transformation workshop. It cost £50 per person and this included a chair, selection of

fabric, Annie Sloan paint and wax, lunch and drinks. Readers can go to our Eden on the Green Facebook page and look at our photos. "The workshops really are a day full of creative fun. I love to see the confidence develop in people as they put their hand to the renovation and restoration of an old chair. So much old furniture has been masterfully crafted and therefore has lovely features. It’s amazing what can be achieved with a bit of guidance. And at the end of the experience they get to take their finished piece home with them!’ Su is also happy to take commissions. So if you have any piece of furniture that you would like transformed, give her a call to discuss. "Not everybody has got the time, space or patience to do it themselves. I am set up to be able to do it for them. Currently I have a table and chair set that someone inherited when a relative passed away. They didn’t want to get rid of it because of the sentimental value but it didn’t really fit in with their decor. "So I suggested that they paint it and they were really glad because they hadn’t thought of that before. I have been involved with interior design for years now. I have acquired quite a lot of knowledge on the subject and I’m always happy to help people with ideas.’

Plymouth Science Park - launch pad for business success

Dozens of entrepreneurs and start-up companies have gone on to greater things after taking their first steps in the world of business at the Plymouth Science Park.

Since opening in 1995, Plymouth Science Park has provided the launch pad for scores of enterprises from one-man businesses to larger companies operating across a wide range of industry sectors. Plymouth Business Park’s director of operations Christian Jenkins said: “There’s a general misconception that the Park is exclusively for well-established businesses in the science and advanced technology areas. But nothing could be further from the truth. “We are ideally placed to help small start-up businesses, offering all-inclusive office accommodation for as little as £200 a month. Our aim is to help embryonic businesses to get themselves established by providing an all-encompassing range of services Christian Jenkins and support. He said that in the first quarter of 2015 a record number of new companies had moved into the Park and there also had been a significant level of enquiries from larger companies considering a move to Plymouth Science Park. BUSINESS MATTERS

A perfect park for Rebecca’s media company

Rebecca Garrett

One company which has blossomed and flourished at Plymouth Science Park is award-winning Rebecca Garrett Media. The company specialises in UK sales and promotional campaigns on TV and online, in national newspapers and magazines. It works for some of the biggest media names in the country including The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent, ITV, the Daily Mail and many others. Founder Rebecca Garrett built a hugely successful business in London before moving to Devon just under 10 years ago to bring up her family and become a '1950s housewife.' "I had enjoyed tremendous success building the business, but decided it was time to take life a little easier when my children came along," said Rebecca. "I moved to Tavistock, but the phone didn't stop ringing and when the children started school I found myself running the same sort of business again. "I worked from home for a number of years, then employed an assistant and eventually took on some office space over a pet store in Tavistock." By chance she attended a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Tavistock where Simon Chamberlain, chair of the Plymouth Science Park Board, was guest speaker. "I was inspired by what he said and had lots of questions for him

at the end of the meeting. We hit it off straight way and eventually Simon agreed to become my non-executive chairman. He was an incredible inspiration and mentor." As a result Rebecca decided to relocate her business to Plymouth Science Park in 2012. By then she employed four people and required a relatively small office, but within a year the business had doubled in size, thanks to the support and services provided at the Park. "It's hard enough running a business as a sole owner, but with the help and support from everyone at Plymouth Science Park I could forget about all the problems created when a business is expanding. "When we recognised the need for more office space it was a simple matter of identifying the right office suite and then moving everything from one part of the building to the other. It really could not have been easier. Our telephone number and address obviously stayed the same, so there was very little hassle involved. "It meant we could get on with running the business without worrying about all the challenges of moving offices." In the three years since moving to Plymouth Science Park the company has not only enjoyed significant growth but has also won the Western Morning News Small Business Award and a Venus New Media and Online Business Award. Rebecca Garrett Media now employs nine people and is actively seeking new recruits. "We are always looking for enthusiastic, motivated and creative account managers who want to develop a successful career in the media without the hassle of moving to London," said Rebecca. "We offer an excellent package with some great benefits."

I have long been a fan of Riverford’s fantastic veg boxes and I’m thrilled to find myself in them, as it were! “One of my guiding principles when writing Light and Easy was to keep everything as simple and hassle-free as possible. These recipe boxes embody that idea, to the max.” Guy added: “I love Hugh’s recipes; simple, delicious food made with respect for the ingredients and with the minimum of fuss. It’s also great to be working with someone who

Farmer Guy Watson founded Riverford in 1987, delivering organic vegetables to 30 local homes from his Citreon 2CV after unpleasant dealings with unscrupulous supermarket buyers ignited a desire to sell direct to the customer. There are now four Riverford farms in the UK - the original Wash Farm in Devon, and others in Cambridgeshire, North Yorkshire and Hampshire. Together, the four sister farms deliver to around 47,000 homes in the UK each week. Riverford also now has a farm in France where they grow crops to plug the ‘hungry gap’ around May and June, when the UK winter crops have reached an end and the summer crops are not yet ready. The company has won many awards including Best Retailer at the Observer Ethical Awards five times (most recently in 2014), Best Independent Retailer in the RSPCA Good Business Awards and numerous Compassion in World Farming Awards. Guy Watson has been named BBC Farmer of the Year twice, in 2006 and again in 2013. In addition, its restaurant the Riverford Field Kitchen won Best Ethical Restaurant 2010 and 2009 in the Observer Food Monthly Awards.

in Plymouth concert Local and International composers are celebrated in Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, which also features well known, charismatic and versatile soprano Nadine Benjamin (formerly Mortimer-Smith). From the dramatic tors of Dartmoor, to the beautiful rolling hills of the French Auvergne and on to the streets of Rome, this programme takes the audience on a tour from the South West of England through continental Europe. Local compositions include Judy Whitlock’s ‘Dartmoor Letterboxes’. This work is inspired by the moody contrasts of the moor with each of the movements representing a different tor. ‘The Soldier’, composed by Stephen Brown and sung by Nadine Benjamin, is a setting of one of Rupert Brooke’s well known war poems. The final West Country composer is Steven Lunn. His composition ‘Be Who You Are!’ was inspired by a samba band in Spain during the fiesta season. It is scored for a standard orchestra but with an extended percussion section. Many instruments are given their opportunity to shine – perhaps reflecting the title of the piece. Crossing to the continent the opening work of the concert is Austrian Franz von Suppe’s overture from the operetta ‘Light Cavalry’. Nadine then takes the solo role in the fourth series of the ‘Songs of the Auvergne’ - a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France, arranged for soprano and orchestra by Joseph Canteloube. Then to Italy and the popular symphonic poem the ‘Pines of Rome’, written by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi in 1924. Nadine Benjamin is much sought after as a soloist and has recently made her New York recital debut with a programme of Verdi songs and arias. In November 2014 Nadine was hailed by Opera Now as one of their favourite top ten sopranos in ‘a new generation of sopranos who are destined to have impressive careers’. The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longestestablished orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 138 years. The concerts are to be performed at Sterts Theatre, Liskeard on Sunday June 14 at 5.30pm and Plymouth Guildhall on June 17 at 7.30pm.

Celebrating Mount Edgcumbe 500 Throughout 2015 Mount Edgcumbe will be marking a historical milestone with various events and activities which recognise the Edgcumbe family and 500 years of their careful stewardship of a much loved Grade 1 listed landscape.

On June 30 1515 King Henry VIII (by the Grace of God, King of England, France and Lord of Ireland) issued the following licence: ‘For Sir Peter Eggegcombe (Sir Piers Edgcumbe). License to impark lands in Weststonehouse and Cremele, Devon, and Cuthele, Cornw., and to enclose and fortify his manor of Estonehouse, Devon.’ Weststonehouse and Cremele – today known as Mount Edgcumbe and Cremyll – were until 1844 included as a part of the county of Devon. 2015 will mark the 500th anniversary of the Edgcumbe family’s first structure on the peninsula – the great palisade fence used to empark the fallow deer which still graze the land today. Mount Edgcumbe is hosting themed red-letter day events throughout the year which will celebrate the rich tapestry of stories attached to the buildings and the land bounded by the 10 miles of coastline of the Park. The Park will host the Classic Car Rally on Sunday August 2 and later in the month ‘Mount Edgcumbe at War’ will look at 500 years of military conflict over the weekend of August 29 and 30. Mount Edgcumbe will also be hosting regular Sunday markets on the second Sunday of each month through to October in and around its Barrow Centre. The Barrow Centre has once again become the thriving heart of the Park with a community of artists and craftspeople bringing buildings back to life reflecting the crafts used on the estate over the past 500 years. From a working blacksmith, beautiful loom weaving, resident artists, a treasure trove of a vintage upcycled shop, various woodcraft activities to a splendid new traditional toy shop.

Lang & Co Estate Agents and Town & Country Lettings & Estate Agents will be relaunched as Lang Town & Country on May 26. The newly-merged business will have an experienced team of directors and staff with offices in Mannamead, North Hill and Plymstock. Both companies and many of the team involved have been immersed in the Plymouth property market for many years and the board of the new business has well over 150 years' experience. Richard Rabin, who started Town & Country Lettings with Chris Forrest in 1997 said: "We are two like-minded property companies with a great history between us providing expert advice in both estate agency and lettings. "With the joining of our two companies we can offer our clients even more choice and appeal to a new and larger market while still maintaining our personal service which has created the companies that we are today." Jay Foster, who has more than 30 years' experience in the Plymouth property market, joined Lang & Co in 1995, shortly after it had been founded by Robert Lang. Jay said: "The ethos of Lang & Co has always been based on the fact that it is run by Plymouth people, for Plymouth people. The same is true of Town & Country. "As with all 'good ideas' what started as a fanciful conversation soon developed into a 'no brainer.' As a result two well-established and firmly Plymouth conscious property companies are merging their skills and strengths. "Both companies are innovative, highly principled and fit very well together. Both the new board of directors and both sets of staff have already developed a strong bond and are determined to become one of the foremost property companies for both sales and lettings within the city and surrounding areas.

forces to create businesses James Clarke, who will be managing director of Lang Town & Country Estate agents – as Tracy Brady is for Lettings – said: "This merger is not about consolidation but about expansion and progress. The combined businesses share the same reputation for professionalism and customer service and we believe this will set Lang Town & Country apart from many other estate agency and letting businesses in Plymouth. "Town & Country have established a strong presence in the waterfront area and the north of the city while Lang & Co has traditionally been well represented in central areas such as Peverell, Hartley, Mannamead and Stoke and latterly in Plymstock and the South Hams. "We will certainly be responsible for marketing the largest number of properties in the central areas of Plymouth, as well as having a strong presence in the lettings market through Town & Country, which is one of the most highly-respected lettings agencies in the city. "We are also very active in the new homes market and see this aspect of the business growing strongly in the future. We are currently marketing the former Royal Naval Hospital development in the Millfields and working with national developers Cavanna Homes on the Boatyard scheme in Oreston. We are also delighted to be adding a collection of new homes sites in the city later in the year. "We are all extremely excited about the future and look forward to serving old and new customers, determined to offer the high standard of service which clients of the two businesses have come to expect," added James. James highlighted the fact that both companies have played an active role in the local community, supporting charities and city-based organisations such as Plymouth Raiders, Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Argyle as well as being main sponsor for Plymouth Cricket Club. The new company boasts three former chairman of the Plymouth Area Property Professionals Association and has strong relationships with many of the city's chartered surveyors and solicitors. The other directors of Lang Town & Country are Tracy Brady, Gareth Forrest, Paul Preen and Marc Rees, with Chris Forrest taking a consultancy role.

Award-winning Sunnybanks Homes development of detached bungalows

Above: Architect’s impression of The Powisland fourbedroom bungalow and (above right) The Westbrook

Award winning Sunnybanks Homes have just started construction of 11 four-bedroom detached bungalows at Caradon Close, Derriford, just off Powisland Drive. The bungalows are very similar in size and design to the two largest detached bungalows the company built in Woolwell Drive at Roborough, Plymouth in 2012. Graham Clark, Sunnybanks Homes’ planning director’ said: "We have a longstanding reputation for building quality, superior bungalows. The site at Caradon Close offered us the opportunity to build spacious four-bedroom bungalows which are rarely, if ever, built, particularly in such a prestigious location just off Powisland Drive which is one of the most favoured areas in Plymouth.” Ten of the bungalows have an internal floor space of 1,666 sq ft and have either an integral or detached double garage taking the total floor space to just under 2,000 sq ft. Each bungalow has four double bedrooms, as well as a spacious lounge and kitchen-breakfast room which both open onto a sunny rear garden. The master bedroom and guest bedroom have en-suite shower rooms. Four of the bungalows have a double width driveway access direct onto Caradon Close. The other seven are accessed off a private road. The Powisland four-bedroom detached bungalow, with integral double garage and electric doors, has Sunnybanks Homes’ trademark natural stone and natural slate finish together with a bespoke feature entrance porch. integral double garage and electric doors, by contrast has a feature brick frontage with concrete tiles that reflects the character of some of the houses in Caradon Close. Both bungalows will be built to Sunnybanks Homes’ award winning superior standards and will be available with a 10year NHBC Warranty. Work has already commenced on site and it is anticipated that the first bungalows will be completed towards the end of 2015, with the rest becoming available in early 2016. Graham Clark added: "To find a new build bungalow is extremely rare these days. To find a new build four-bedroom bungalow, particularly located in a prestigious area, is even rarer. We are aware of only a handful being built in the whole of the south-west so the opportunity to purchase one does not come along very often. "Our development of four detached bungalows, in nearby Woolwell Drive, proved to be very popular and set the benchmark in terms of price and standards. We think these bungalows will be even better and more popular, judging by the number of enquiries we have already received. "Bungalows of this size and standard, which cater for the difficulties of downsizing from a large house whilst also comfortably accommodating the demands of visits from an extended family, do not come along very often.” Mansbridge & Balment are the appointed sales agents. Their Plymouth North Office, based next to Tesco at Woolwell is taking 'expressions of interest’ ahead of the formal launch of the development at Caradon Close, later in the year. Further details will be available in due course from the Sunnybanks Homes website www.sunnybankshomes.co.uk or by contacting the agents Mansbridge & Balment. The first option to purchase will be to those who have registered their expression of interest who will receive fuller details in advance of a formal launch of the development.

She worked out that she could take part of the space in the garage adjoining her three bedroom house and create a smart and practical plan. “I am not getting any younger and was finding it increasingly difficult getting into and out of the bath and at one stage actually thought about moving,” said Pam. “But I have lived in this house for more than 40 years and it would have been too big a wrench to move. “I thought about it a lot and decided that if I could have a walk-in shower it would be the best way forward. “My garage is pretty long and there was already a small area at the end of the garage which housed a toilet and sink, which were pretty much past their sell-by date,” she added. Having worked out that there was just enough space for the new facility, she chose a firm of local builders to knock down the old walls and create a new area for the shower, toilet and vanity unit with sink. New windows and doors were installed by another local firm - and when it came to deciding which supplier to fit the new bathroom Pam had no doubts. “A couple of my friends recommended Jobel Bathrooms as they were very pleased with the work that they had done.” Jobel proprietor Michael Freeman visited Pam and having taking her instructions prepared a 3D plan of the new room, showing all the fittings and fixtures. “It was quite a challenge as the room only measures eight feet by five feet, but Michael was able to come up with a plan which made the most of the space available. “I visited the Jobel showroom in Millbay Road and was amazed at the sheer number of bathroom displays that were available to choose from,” added Pam. “ I was able to select all the bathroom fittings, shower enclosure and wall tiles and floor tiles, as well mosaic tiles for the shower tray.

Pam’s pleased as punch with her new shower room thanks to Jobel “I don’t like the cold and wanted a large radiator in the new room, which fits perfectly. Jobel also installed under-floor heating which makes it a real pleasure to use the shower room - whatever time of year it is.” Once Pam had selected the fixtures and fittings it took just a few days for the job to be completed. “I was really impressed with all the Jobel team including the electrician, plumber and tiler. They were all very polite and extremely professional. “The tiling in particular is fantastic - I couldn’t be more pleased with the end result,” said Pam. “I would have no hesitation in recommending Jobel to anyone who is looking to have their bathroom updated or is contemplating a shower room or wet room. It was all trouble free and I am absolutely delighted with it.”

Compensation for travellers who have suffered from severely delayed or cancelled flights has been an ongoing battle between the airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for some time now due to amended EU legislation. A landmark court case brought by a passenger against an airline was recently won and a significant amount of compensation was awarded to the consumer for a flight cancellation although the airline has subsequently claimed that it will appeal against the result on the grounds that the value of the claim far outweighed the cost of the ticket. So, where do you stand? If a passenger arrives at their destination three or more hours later than scheduled, airlines must pay compensation of £180 to £430 depending on the length of the journey and the delay. The airlines can only refuse to pay out if it is determined that the delay was due to ‘extraordinary circumstances’, which were beyond their control, such as industrial action, a security threat or extreme weather. However, some airlines have repeatedly refused or delayed compensation payments, challenging the EU regulations in the courts. The compensation is not paid automatically: each passenger must submit a claim to the airline for each circumstance. If a flight is cancelled or delayed by more than two hours, the airline is obliged to provide passengers with refreshments and accommodation. After a delay of five hours, passengers can choose to cancel their trip, demand a full refund and an alternative flight back to their original point of departure. You can only claim the compensation if you are travelling from an airport within the EU or flying with an airline whose headquarters is situated in the EU. For example, an Air India flight from Heathrow to Delhi would be covered by the regulations but an Air India flight from Delhi to Heathrow would not. Even for an employee working in the travel industry, the regulations can be very confusing! The good news is that from next year, a new Ombudsman service will be available to handle complaints under plans

outlined by the CAA. It will bring aviation in line with other industries, such as financial services and energy, where an officially appointed Ombudsman is in place to help resolve disputes and instruct service providers to pay compensation and adhere to legislation. As soon as I have more details of this Ombudsman service, I will include them in my article. In the meantime, if you are unfortunate enough to experience a flight cancellation or lengthy delay with any airline, please ensure that they issue you with a letter clearly confirming the duration of and reason for the disruption. It is also essential that you keep copies of flight confirmations, tickets, boarding cards and any receipts for expenses you incur as these could be requested in future correspondence regarding any claim. During the past few months, there has been a great deal of confusion surrounding the issuing of visas for travellers visiting India and Egypt. Both countries recently decided to change their visa requirements and regulations making a visit to either country not only more difficult, but a lot more expensive. India firstly tried to introduce a system whereby a tourist visa could only be obtained if you visited one of their appointed offices, in person, for an interview and to provide fingerprints. For us here in the South West, the closest proposed office was Bristol. As you would expect, these requirements deterred so many people from visiting India that the proposals have now been completely withdrawn. Their new rules incorporate the more popular idea of an electronic visa, similar to the systems already in place for visiting the USA and Australia, where travellers can apply online for instant approval. The proposed date for this

system to go live is June 15 so if you are planning to travel to India after that date, I would advise you to wait for the new electronic system to be up and running before you apply for your visa. Egypt, on the other hand, decided that travellers who were not entering the country on a package holiday and had no ground handler (tour operator representing them), would need to apply in advance for a visa from the Egyptian Embassy. The reason for implementing these amended regulations was to improve security but for many visitors travelling on a flight only to visit their own properties or stay with friends and relatives, this would prove to be difficult to accept. Again, after consulting with the travel industry and receiving many objections from travellers, the proposed changes were abandoned and they decided to remain with the system of purchasing a visa upon arrival. I find it remarkable that two countries whose economies rely so heavily on tourism were even contemplating making such changes to their visa requirements. If they want to further develop inbound tourism and build on the contribution this is making to their economy, surely they should be looking for ways of making it easier for tourists to obtain visas and access their tourist destinations. I completely understand that internal security is always going to be a priority and that the main focus of any country’s border controls. However, I also feel that imposing higher visa fees and making it more inconvenient for visitors to obtain visas is somewhat short-sighted and naïve as travellers will surely just choose an alternative destination in which to spend their hard earned cash! Happy Holidays!

A leg tremor prompted a visit to his GP in 2012 and scans confirmed that he had the progressive neurological condition. “The very first question I was asked by the consultant when he confirmed the diagnosis was would I like to take part in clinical trials. When my father died in the early eighties his wish was for his body to be donated to medical science so I was receptive to supporting research.” Tim signed up to a patient register specifically for Parkinson’s research and has been matched with several studies. He has taken part in a Phase 2 drug trial, two observational studies including one on pain management, and the development of a cognitive and memory assessment tool which is now available to clinical professionals as an app. Tim, who is the chief executive and Harbour Master for Cattewater Harbour Commissioners in Plymouth, added: “The research staff make you feel valued and there comes with taking part a sense of empowerment because I am doing what I can to help others better understand Parkinson’s. I have come to terms with there not being a cure at the moment but much can be done to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s. “I am fortunate to have the flexibility in my working life to attend research appointments and, just as employers have a moral duty to accommodate staff who wish to make e.g. blood donations, and employees have a duty to respond to calls for jury service, I feel there should be a similar approach to health research. It is in everyone’s interest to support and achieve advances in health care.” NIHR Clinical Research Network South West Peninsula Research Delivery Manager Mike Visick said: “We have been very grateful for the time and support Tim has given to research. As well as being a participant in clinical trials, Tim has spoken at events for patients and healthcare professionals. By sharing his experience he provides a valuable insight into Parkinson’s with a healthy dose of good humour.” One person in every 500 has Parkinson’s – that’s about 127,000 people in the UK.

MOBILITY MATTERS

Plymouth Mobility Centre - a one stop shop that aims to keep you on the move

A brand new mobility showroom – the largest in Devon and Cornwall – has been opened in the city by Plymouth Mobility Centre. The showroom at Drake Mill Business Park in Estover has everything under one roof, from day-to-day living aids such as kitchen equipment and walking sticks to specialist rise and recline chairs and adjustable beds. There is also a big selection of scooters and wheelchairs as well as curved and straight stairlifts, and level access showers and wet rooms. The centre has a large workshop behind the showroom where a team of engineers ensures that all made-to-measure items and home and vehicle adaptions are a perfect fit. The vehicle work includes pedal transfers, hand controls, swivel seats, electric steps and boot hoists for scooters, while all home adaptions are also carried out by inhouse fitters. For Plymouth Mobility Centre owner Ian Bellamy, the opening is a major expansion of his business and means he can reach more people. He opened his other store, Launceston Mobility Centre, 14 years ago, when he noticed that a lot of older and disabled people were struggling with day to day tasks. What started as a small shop initially grew to the base he now has on the Penny Gillam Industrial Estate in Launceston. Ian then spotted that many customers were travelling down from Plymouth: “It was quite

54\

The Plymouth Magazine June 2015

a distance for them to come so we decided to open here,” he said. “It has also brought us new customers not just from Plymouth but from further afield in Devon. This is a perfect spot for us here as it’s near the A38 and we’re easy to find.” Plymouth Mobility Centre is a member of the British Healthcare Trades Association and approved by the Trading Standards Institute. It is also a Motability partner for scooters and powered wheelchairs. As well as sales, the centre carries out services and repairs. People can also get in touch if they want to hire scooters, wheelchairs, walkers and stairlifts. The showroom has plenty of free parking and there is level access. The store has been designed to enable visitors using wheelchairs to get around all areas with ease. All the major mobility brands are available and Ian said: “If someone comes in and asks for something we never say ‘no’. If we don’t have it in stock we’ll get it. “We offer a next day delivery service on most products or a seven day delivery for made to measure items. We pride ourselves on our customer service which is one of the reasons we have such a good reputation, together with our range.” As part of the service Ian and his staff will provide home demonstrations on many items for customers who are unable to visit the showroom. And, with all customers of major items, they will carry out a full assessment: “We make sure that the product is right for you and that you are capable of using it. If it’s not right we’ll tell you so.”

All products come in a range of colours, sizes and in the case of furniture, fabrics – if it’s not on show, just ask Ian and his front-of-house team, Graham and Holly. The expansion has gone so well that the business is now looking to take on two more staff, one at each base. For Ian, the Plymouth store could not have got off to a better start: “The response so far has been really good, we’ve had lots of customers in and we’re getting some excellent feedback.” The centre has a large meeting room with hot drink

facilities that can accommodate up to 20 people and Ian is offering its use free of charge to mobility groups and charities. Contact Ian for details. You can also keep up to date with latest products by visiting the Plymouth Mobility Centre’s page on Facebook.

FOSTERING MATTERS

Call for teaching professionals in Plymouth to consider becoming foster carers

Every day teachers are making a difference to the pupils they teach, so it is not surprising to learn that many of Foster Care Associates’ (FCA) foster families have a background in education and working with children. With a national shortage of carers, FCA would like to build on this trend and is calling on current and former teaching professionals who want to provide a safe and stable home to young people in Plymouth to get in touch. Sherree Cole, registered manager from FCA South West, said: “We’re continually seeking to attract new carers who believe they have the patience, understanding and determination to make a difference to young people’s lives. "There are huge parallels between the motivation to teach and to foster, which probably explains why so many of our foster families have a background in education. Seeing young people make positive progress is the reward that carers and teachers share. “Our carers come from a range of backgrounds and at different stages of life. From people whose children have left home and single people, to families with teenagers, there are all kinds of families and individuals who can begin the hugely rewarding journey into foster care. We'd love to hear from people in Plymouth who want to make a difference to a young person's life." Foster carers Andre and Angie Savchenko have built their lives around caring for young people both as foster carers with FCA and in their respective careers as a head teacher and classroom assistant. Andre explained why he thinks his experience as a teacher

56\

The Plymouth Magazine June 2015

has benefitted his role as a carer: “We started fostering at the same time as I qualified as a teacher, so for me the two roles have always gone hand in hand with the experience from each role helping me to be better at the other.” Sharon Hughes' career in teaching led her family into fostering. She now fosters alongside training teachers and carers in techniques to support the emotional wellbeing of young people. She explained: "Being a foster carer with a teaching background gives you the opportunity to educate a child in a different way and focus more on the emotional well being of the child. Fostering is a way of life for us and since we became FCA carers in 2011 we have become part of a wonderful network of carers in our local area who have become an extended family." According to FCA there are many factors that make up an ideal candidate – everything from being adaptable, resilient and nurturing to being a good listener and having a flexible response to a young person’s needs. From the very beginning FCA provides ongoing support and generous fees to all of its carers, throughout the UK, and is dedicated to providing all the advice they need to make a positive impact on the children they look after.

Anyone interested in fostering is invited to come along to one FCA’s many fostering information events. To discover more about forthcoming events in Plymouth please visit www.thefca.co.uk/ourevents or call 0800 022 4012.

PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Plymouth’s ‘ship’ building The iconic Ship building in Derriford, once a hive of industry as the bustling headquarters of the Plymouth Herald and Western Morning News, has been given a lastminute reprieve from the threat of demolition with the announcement that it has been acquired by a South West property developer. Burrington Estates, which has made a name for itself preserving historic buildings and returning them to their former glory, has delighted Plymouth City Council and local campaigners by vowing to save this eye-catching glass-andsteel building. The derelict building – designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and nicknamed The Ship because of its distinctive shape – is set to be given a new lease of life as the main Plymouth site for Thrive Hubs, an innovative combination of flexible, inspiring and professional environments for new and growing businesses and entrepreneurs. Two or three smaller centres around the city are due to launch imminently, with the aim of rolling the Thrive model out to other UK cities soon. Mark Edworthy, Chairman of Burrington Estates and founder of Thrive Hubs, comments: “Saving Plymouth’s glass Ship building marks an investment of £5 million and we look forward to working alongside Plymouth City Council to ensure The Ship reaches its full potential within the city. “Burrington Estates not only has a passion for the sensitive and appropriate renovation of historic and significant buildings, but a drive to breathe new life into them and The Ship very much fits into our overall company ethos. Our aim,

as with all of our developments, is to restore them to their former glory and we are confident The Ship will be regarded as one of the places to do business in the city in no time at all. “We are sure that Thrive Hubs will strike a chord with companies and entrepreneurs alike, and play an instrumental role in creating jobs and keeping business talent within the city – we also hope it will help attract talent to the region too. “We are expecting a high level of interest in Thrive – a supportive eco-system for entrepreneurs and businesses to work in flexible, inspiring and professional environments – and would encourage anyone interested to get in touch to sign up quickly to be part of this exciting movement. We will be scheduling weekly visits culminating in a grand open day on 20 June – but we require people to pre-register for both

due to the anticipated demand.” Burrington Estates has welcomed the move to make The Ship a Listed building, preserving it for future generations and turning it into a place the city can be proud of once more. The building is soon to be renamed by Burrington Estates as 'The Spirit of Enterprise' to reflect the new vision for the landmark building. Advanced discussions are under way with a number of businesses, including a leading South West manufacturer. Paul Scantlebury, co-founder of Burrington Estates, commented: “Burrington Estates has a strong track record in delivering large-scale construction and renovation projects, preserving the heritage of sites like Dean Clarke House, once the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and now a pride of the city rather than a derelict, unloved site. In Ivybridge, we hope to create a new heart of the community, with a sensitive but ambitious multi-use housing and retail development at the historic Stowford Mill, while retaining the heritage of the site. Meanwhile, in Plymouth, we have taken Ocean Crescent and transformed it into a stylish and sought-after apartment building and continue to develop Burrington Business Park into a thriving place to do business.”

GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE Three easy steps using Confetti Pots

Step-by-step guide to creating great hanging baskets Firstly, thank you all so much for the kind comments about our puppy Basil – he would like to personally thank everyone for the numerous visits, ear rubs and treats he has received!

Four steps in creating your own hanging basket: start with Geranium as the centrepiece, add patio plants, add Lobelia to get a perfect end result

60\

So this month I would love to be writing all about my wonderful garden and lawn but I can’t because it’s all a bit of a mess! Where do I start?! Well the May weather has been damp and cold for the most part so plants have been slow to develop and everything is a bit green. Hopefully more reliable warmer temperatures in June will help sort it all out. Plus everything that did show a flower Basil helped himself to. Of course as he can now jump into the border nothing is sacred and stealing our flower buds especially my lovely Agapanthus buds is a wonderful game! Basillllll! So while I wait for my shrubs to develop and bulbs to pop up and survive the Basil attack I am turning my attention to summer colour and doing my hanging baskets and pots and putting colour through the borders. Ideas for pots and baskets are basically the same and we have put together a photographic ‘how to plant’ guide. Firstly choose colours that you like which go together. We usually put blues, purples, pinks and whites together, reds, oranges, yellows and whites together but there is nothing stopping you from creating your own recipe perhaps purple and yellow? You have three choices: 1. Keep it simple and buy mixed bedding pots (Confetti or Festival Colour Pots) designed perfectly for pots and baskets that you can plant as they are and just put straight in. 2. Choose all your own plants and put as few or as many in as you like choosing a mixture of upright and trailing plants . 3. Buy a ready made one! Using Confetti Pots • Choose a 12 inch hanging basket and fill with container and basket compost. Mix in slow release fertiliser and water gel crystals. This will feed your basket for a few months and help with moisture retention. • Make a hole in the centre and put one confetti pot in. Firm down. • Spread more compost around the top of the pot. • Within a couple of weeks the plants will fill the pot and spread out over the sides. If you choose a coir lined basket the water will drain through. If you use a plastic lined wicker basket cut some holes in the plastic to allow for drainage. If you use a bigger basket you can fill with other bedding plants or place two confetti pots in together. Creating your own recipe Derek and I like to cram our hanging baskets so

The Plymouth Magazine June 2015

By Fiona Newton and Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre they will be really full and spilling over! • Choose a 14 or 16 inch hanging basket. Fill with compost as above • Choose a centre piece plant a Fuchsia or Geranium for example and plant in the middle. • Use 6 patio plants (9 or 10cm pot size) we chose Bacopa, Bidens, Surfinias, Verbena, Calibrachoa (Million Bells) and Diascia. • Fill gaps with six pack bedding. We chose Marigolds and Lobelia. You can use less patio plants and more bedding packs to reduce the cost of the basket. Hanging baskets are best when they are bursting so cram as much as you can in! For the best show and most cost effective basket I would still use a Geranium, a Bacopa and a Surfinia then bedding packs. Patio plants are grown from cuttings compared to bedding packs which are grown from seed which is why they are more expensive. You also don’t find Surfinias or Bacopa in packs. Proven winners baskets This is so easy! • Choose a 14 inch basket and fill with compost as above. • Choose which recipe you like from the proven winners range, Bermuda Sky, Purple Haze or All Fired up. • Choose the three plants and plant in the basket • Leave to grow on for a few weeks and you will have a lovely full basket! You can of course buy wire baskets and liners and do some under planting if you are more experienced! Ideas for Shady Baskets – Non Stop Begonia, New Guinea Impatien or upright Fuchsia for the centre piece and Lysamachia, Trailing Fuchsia, Trailing Begonias, Bizzy Lizzies or Mimulus as fillers. Scented Baskets – Scented Geranium as centre piece, Nemesia (lovely new varieties available), Surfinia Pink Vein, Nepeta, Lobularia, Alyssum. So fingers crossed for lots of warm sunny weather in June – baskets and pots will then be blooming. Remember to give them a liquid feed regularly which will be more instant for late summer blooms. I am looking forward to what will be popping up in my garden – this week I found a little Aquilegia, they are lovely everyone should have one in their garden! Happy Gardening!
