Feeling good about Plymouth Everyone here at the Plymouth Magazine is feeling pretty good at the moment, so much so that we have just launched the #PlymouthFeelsGood campaign on Twitter where we will be highlighting many of the great things about this wonderful city of ours.

We would love you to join in and Tweet about the people, places and events whch make you feel good about Plymouth. There’s no shortage of positive news from Britain’s Ocean City, so get Tweeting! We’re also celebrating the addition of a glossy new look for our cover and what better way to launch it than with a fantastic wedding shoot at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. We hope you like it. This month’s edition is full of positive stories about individuals and groups who are really making their mark in the city. From Gemma Hall, the talented young cake maker and pattisiere, to the Life Centre Indoor Bowls Club which has just won a prestigious national award for the support it offers disabled bowlers. Our Arts Matters column focuses on the Wheelfever Project, a highly successful initiative which enables youngsters with disabilities to express themselves through dance, while we also talk to two talented young people from Harbourside Fish & Chips who are through to the finals of a leading industry competition. Last, but by no means least, we meet up with Adele Marshall and Jane Dennis, two remarkably determined mums who were so frustrated by the lack of educational options for their autistic sons, that they have become the driving force behind plans for the creation of the Ausum Academy. The proposed free school will cater for the needs of youngsters aged from four to 19 who are on the autistic spectrum. They need help from parents, carers and volunteers in their campaign - you can find out more on pages 62 and 63. Hope the latest issue makes you feel good! In the meantime I’m virtually pain free, don’t need pain killers any more and I can go sailing as often as I like.

It’s plain sailing for Steve - thanks to Foot Solutions Teacher Steve Blackledge has spent much of the last 30 years on his feet. And when he is not teaching product design at Coombe Dean School, Steve spends many hours single-handed sailing around the waters of the South West. But earlier this year Steve started to suffer extreme pain in his left foot, where the toes join the foot which made both his job and his hobby extremely uncomfortable. “It was so bad that I had to take pain killers to keep going,” said Steve, who lives in Wembury. “I knew it would probably take quite a time to see an NHS specialist so I acquired some offthe-shelf insoles, which certainly helped,” said Steve. “A friend then recommended that I should visit Foot Solutions, because they had done such a fantastic job for her.” Steve, 54, booked an appointment at Foot Solutions in Royal Parade and underwent a series of hi-tech examinations, which highlighted the need for custom-made orthotics. “As the custom-made insoles take a couple of weeks to

manufacture, I purchased temporary ones. The moment I tried them the difference was remarkable. I walked up and down the shop saying ‘it’s a miracle!’. “Things got even better when my custom-made insoles arrived. I also purchased some amazing footwear from the Foot Solutions range and this coupled with the insoles has made a huge difference to my life.” Steve recently saw an orthopaedic consultant surgeon at the local hospital who diagnosed metatarsalgia, which affects the bones and joints of the feet, and often requires surgery. “He was so impressed with the orthotics and footwear supplied by Foot Solutions that he took the time to commend the company on the professionalism of their approach in a letter to my GP. “I still may need surgery in the long term, but the surgeon said that I should carry on with the orthotics for the next year and then assess the situation. “In the meantime I’m virtually pain free, don’t need pain killers any more and I can go sailing as often as I like.”

For self-confessed chocoholic Gemma Hall, setting up her hand-made cake and patisserie business is like a dream come true. And it’s a natural progression for Plymouthborn Gemma, who started baking for her family while she was still at primary school. Gemma launched her Sweet Harmony business in April this year after completing her NVQ3 in Patisserie and Confectionary at City College Plymouth and securing support and guidance from the Prince’s Trust. But for Gemma’s full story we have to wind the clock back more than 20 years, to the days when her family would gather in the kitchen to rustle up something nice: “Baking is something my family has always done,” said Gemma. “I think my first food memory was probably my granddad making me clotted cream sandwiches! They were lovely. “I always used to ‘help’ mum in the kitchen, forever asking ‘how do you do this’ and ‘how do you do that’. Mum’s always been a good cook and to this day I can’t get the same crackling and roast potatoes! It’s down to mum that I got into baking. “I was only about nine-years-old when I started making cakes for the family, just simple ones like chocolate fudge cake or a Victoria sponge. They gradually got more and more elaborate and at some point people started to say ‘you should do this as a job’. So I owe a lot to my family and friends for their encouragement and for giving me the confidence to go for it.” Gemma’s next big inspiration was her “amazing” tutor at City College, Larry Moody: “He really pushed me and I have a lot to thank him for.” After a year or so creating desserts at a restaurant in Plymouth Gemma decided to launch her own business: “I was working 14 hours a day and although I learned a lot at the job, with a partner and a daughter who’s now just turned 10, it didn’t fit in with family life. And I’d always

WOMEN AT WORK wanted to run my own cake and patisseries business so I thought ‘right, let’s give it a go’. So in the summer of 2014 Gemma enlisted the support of the Prince’s Trust to have a crash course in how to set up a business. Then, in December last year, she pitched her idea and business plan to the Trust’s launch group and they were so impressed they agreed to help fund her: “It’s been a roller-coaster ride,” said Gemma. “But all the way along I’ve benefitted from amazing help and support. At the Prince’s Trust, it came from my mentor, Philip Hamilton. He was brilliant.” Gemma moved into her kitchen at Scott’s Business Park in April and this is where all the creativity happens. She makes her cakes to order, with business split 50/50 between private customers and local restaurants and food outlets: “I’m here from 8am in the morning and I’ll be baking until around 12 noon,” explained Gemma. “Then I’ll be out delivering.” The patisseries range from bite-size canopés to celebration cakes. The individual sized desserts are “miniversions” of the full sized cakes. On the day Plymouth Magazine visited, Gemma was about to start a two-tier party cake.

Gemma uses local ingredients as much as possible such as Cornish butter and only uses free-range eggs. She’s happy to keep the volume down to manageable proportions, arguing “it’s quality, not quantity that’s important to me”. These days, Gemma doesn’t feel tempted to make a ‘baker’s dozen’ – unless the extra one is for her daughter, Tania: “I am a self-confessed chocoholic but if you’re looking at cakes from 8am every morning, you soon lose the temptation to eat them all the time. Tania gets the benefit of that, although I think she’d probably argue that I don’t take enough home with me!” Gemma already has one eye to the future: “One day I would like to open a patisserie and café, selling my bespoke hand make cakes and specialist coffees. But at the moment I’m really happy doing this. It was very scary at first but I’d have kicked myself later if I hadn’t given it a try. I feel very proud of what I’ve achieved.” So does she have her own favourite cake? “Yes. For a chocolate fan like me, it has to be the Bitter Chocolate Truffle Torte. It’s chocolate Heaven!”

WEDDING MATTERS

Weddings have been celebrated at the Duke of Cornwall for more than 150 years - and now the iconic Plymouth hotel is aiming to attract a new generation of couples.

The hotel is stepping up its profile in the wedding market with a comprehensive marketing campaign which will include a new brochure, widespread advertising, social media activity and a not-to-be-missed event at the hotel in October. The team at the hotel have also developed an attractive range of all-inclusive packages which can be tailored to the precise needs of the bride and groom. Months of planning will come to fruition on October 4 when the hotel's doors will be thrown open for The Duke Wedding Collection: Live. The free event will feature a wide range of presentations and displays by wedding suppliers, special offers on the day, talks and workshops and much more. The Duke of Cornwall's director of marketing Leila Nottage said: "The Duke Wedding Collection: Live is designed to help couples to plan their weddings down to the finest detail. It will also give them the opportunity to experience what we have to offer here at the Duke - even before booking the date. "We will have some outstanding suppliers from Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall who will be on hand to offer advice and help for couples who are planning their special day. "There will be a number of special offers and activities on the day - including the chance for couples to have engagement photos on The Hoe, courtesy of Liberty Pearl Photography and a vintage car company. Couples will also be able to receive a discount of up to £1000 for bookings made within 14 days of the event. “We will also have a fantastic competition on the day with the chance to win a vintage experience with make up, hairstyling, photos and Tea at the Top in the hotel's famous tower," said Leila.

The Plymouth Magazine September 2015

In the lead up to the big event on October 4, the Duke of Cornwall will become members of The Wedding Community - a leading online directory dedicated to wedding planning which is used by thousands of couples every year. The Duke Wedding Collection: Live will also be featured in WED Magazine in September, a leading publication aimed at the wedding market in Devon and Cornwall. As part of the hotel's drive to promote its unique wedding offering, Jenny Wren Events organised a stylised wedding shoot styled by Inspire Hire and photographed by Liberty Pearl Photography in June featuring professional models.. The hotel's spacious ballroom was dressed in all its wedding finery and literally hundreds of photographs were taken on the day to show exactly what the Duke has to offer. Many of the photos taken for the wedding shoot will be featured in the Duke's new glossy wedding brochure which will be available soon and will also appear on social media in the weeks leading up to October 4. "We've put a huge amount of planning and energy into the event and we're sure that couples will be impressed with what we have on offer," said Leila. Wedding suppliers who will be attending include photographers, florists, wedding car hire, hair and makeup artists, venue dressers and cake makers. Suppliers of wedding gowns, menswear for grooms and mother of the bride outfits will also be represented. "We have selected some outstanding local suppliers who will be available all under one roof on the day, so there will be plenty for people to see. We will also have music by the Swing Kings, Frank Capri and Your Big Event DJ - and even a close-up magician," she added.

Celebrating in style at the Duke of Cornwall

Golden memories for Anne and Colin Colin and Anne Taylor

The Duke of Cornwall holds happy memories for many couples - but none more so than Colin and Anne Taylor who celebrated their wedding at the hotel 50 years ago. Now they are returning to the hotel on October 2 to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary - in the very room where they held their reception in 1965. Anne, who works at Devonport Dockyard, said: "We will be joined by 50 friends and family in the Haywood Suite a room which obviously has very fond memories for us." She is hopeful that a number of her bridesmaids will be among guests attending their Golden Wedding party. The couple's life together actually started at the Duke of Cornwall, when they dated for the first time at one of the regular Saturday night dances in the hotel's ballroom. "The hotel has always been a special place for us and we go there whenever we can," added Anne. In fact Anne and Colin have celebrated New Year's Eve at the Duke every year for more years than they can remember. They are always joined on New Year's Eve by Anne's cousin Adele Fox and her husband Brian - who also held their wedding reception at the Duke of Cornwall in 1967. Colin and Anne with Barry and Adele They will Fox return to the Duke celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in two years' time - and are already making plans for a special event to mark the occasion at the Duke. Adele said: "We love the Duke of Cornwall, it is one of Plymouth's most popular landmarks." September will not only be a busy month in the run up to the event on October 4, but will also see the launch of the Duke of Cornwall's new-look website at the beginning of the month. The site will feature extensive videography - including drone footage of the hotel's impressive exterior and will enable users to access any part of the site with just two clicks. Director of marketing Leila Nottage said: "It represents a major investment for the hotel, but we are confident that it will be well received by users and lead to increased business." The site has been developed by Plymouth-based Kioo Media, who were selected from a shortlist of other local website companies to deliver the project. www.cornerstonevision.com

Rockpool Trading - the Barbican shop where everything is hand-made in Devon and Cornwall! Helen Woolley pictured at her shop in The House that Jack Built in the Barbican

When Plymouth Magazine last visited Helen Woolley, it was at her home in Peverell which doubled up as HQ for her online Rockpool Trading business. Fast forward nine months and she’s now happily serving customers in her new shop in The House That Jack Built precinct on the Barbican’s Southside Street. It’s the perfect location for Rockpool Trading, which, like the new-look website, only sells hand-crafted artisan items made by people in Devon and Cornwall. “The building and location really lend themselves to what we’re doing here,” said Helen, who opened the doors in March. “Being here, right beside the sea, is ideal for the marine and nauticalthemed pieces we have. And it’s fantastic to be part of this fabulous arcade, full of quirky, independent business. “We wanted Plymouth to have a shop like this, where people can come and buy individual pieces made by talented craftspeople from Devon and Cornwall and it’s great that local people have started to find us. “Because many of our items are oneoffs, when they’re gone, they’re gone, which means that what we have in the shop changes all the time. Some people are coming in every week to see the new pieces. Even in the middle of summer, about 75% of our customers have been local rather than visitors, which is great. “And our online customers have been popping in to see us too, which is nice.” Opening the shop is a big step for Helen to take. Before, she was running the business as an online shop while juggling a job. Now, she’s managing the shop and website full-time, with the help of her husband, Brendan. “When we saw that this unit was available we jumped at it,” said Helen. “We had a week to turn everything around, to

14\

The Plymouth Magazine September 2015

decorate it and get the stock in. “But it’s definitely been worth it. The shop has given us much more flexibility and space. We can sell bigger items now and we’ve roughly doubled the number of pieces and suppliers.” Helen added: “We’ve got a fresh, contemporary range covering a mix of medium such as wood, glass, ceramics, paper and jewellery. We’re also getting in more cushions, bags, candles and soaps now that we have more space, and our vintage and children’s pinnies have gone down very well this summer too.” As well as a fun range for children – including cartoon-style clothes hangers – there are funky things for the garden and ideas for brightening up every room in the house. Helen first had the idea of selling locally-made items when she was walking on a beach in Cornwall. Her vision of a shop window for local craftsmen and women is now a reality. And if anyone was ever in any doubt as to the origins of the pieces, there are hand-made Devon and Cornwall glass hearts adorning the shop windows. The rebuilt Rockpool Trading website features an interactive map in a ‘Meet the Makers’ section, where customers can find out where they’re from and learn a little bit about them. “We felt it was important for people to know about the creators of all these wonderful pieces,” explained Helen. “It’s a fun little section where each of the makers answers three questions. “People want to support local businesses and locally-made goods and they’re looking for one-offs rather than mass-produced items. It’s great if they can see the name or face behind the work. That’s something we can offer. How many high street chains can do that? “We’re also keen to support up-and-coming young artists

and we already sell work by some graduates from Plymouth College of Art. We’re looking to develop that link further.” Helen is advertising in a national magazine this autumn and hopes that the items which were handcrafted in workshops across Devon and Cornwall will soon be finding loving homes all over the country. And Helen – who describes this as “the first shop” – is already on the look-out for new local suppliers to add to the tally: “We now have 42 craftsmen and women supplying our shop and website, which is amazing when you think that we started off with six back in 2011. “But it’s always great to hear from potential new stockists.” The shop is open six days a week: 12 noon to 4pm on Tuesdays, 10.30am to 4pm Wednesdays to Saturdays and 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays. The shop is closed on Mondays. If you can’t get to the shop, you can buy online at www. rockpooltrading.co.uk.

ART MATTERS

Wheelfever have all the right moves

For this month’s Art Matters I’m featuring the local community dance project, Wheelfever. Wheelfever was selected out of 240 youth dance groups from across the country to be one of the 28 groups to perform in the national event in July. Company director, Paula Hocking said: "It was very exciting for the Wheelfever dancers to be chosen to perform at U.Dance 2015. They are a committed group of disabled and non-disabled dancers who

enjoy creating dance and exploring how to move together as a dance company. "The fact that they were selected acknowledges that they have developed their dance and performance skills to a significant level, which is a fabulous achievement. The group embraced the whole experience with great gusto; they enjoyed flying the flag for Plymouth and making friends with dancers from other cities whilst, as always, challenging the stereotypical ideas of who can and cannot dance’. Wheelfever Projects as a grass roots initiative, is something that Plymouth should be proud of. It was started by Paula in 2007. She told me: "I was working as a youth dance leader and, as my son is physically disabled, I was socialising with families in the same situation and having regular conversations about how they felt excluded from dance because they were disabled. "As an advocate of dance being a vital part of culture and for inclusive and accessible dance practice, I seized the moment and started the project. "The hardest part of the work is finding the financial resources to sustain the momentum but seeing the personal and artistic development of the young people is very rewarding and keeps me determined. Being part of a regular dance group encourages a sense of belonging; it can be empowering, liberating and fun! "Our creative workshops encourage independent thinking and problem-solving skills. Dancers develop their

confidence to express and communicate their ideas as well as learning to be part of a team and work in-group settings. "We make new dances each term in which the dancers are fully engaged in the process. The performances naturally challenge the idea about who can and cannot dance. We are conscious that formal training opportunities are not always accessible to dancers who are disabled. "We therefore provide dance training for young people, disabled and non-disabled giving the dancers who are disabled a chance to develop the same level of skills as their non-disabled peers." The Wheelfever team is currently working hard to secure funding so the dancers can return to the studio in September for their weekly workshops at the Plymouth Life Centre where every Saturday in term time they run two sessions from 1pm to 2pm for disabled children (age 6-11), and 2pm to 4pm for disabled young people (age 12-25). Both sessions are open to their siblings and friends to make up inclusive groups where disabled and non-disabled young people make dances together.

Recipe of the month Sponsored by Riverford Organic

Fennel and apple sausage roll with salad and chutney Preparation and cooking time 40 minutes - serves 2 Ingredients: 1 onion; 1 large fennel bulb; 2 garlic cloves; olive oil*; 300g pork mince; 60g breadcrumbs; 30g tarragon, use ½; 15 thyme, use 3 stalks; 2 apples; salt & pepper*; puff pastry; 1 egg; 1 tsp poppy seeds; 1 mini cucumber; 1 lemon; 50g salad leaves; 3 tablespoons chutney Peel the onion and cut into a fine dice. Cut the fennel bulb in half, remove the stalk tops and cut one half into a fine dice, keep the other half to one side. Peel and finely chop/crush the garlic cloves. Put the onions and fennel on to gently cook in a little olive oil in the saucepan. Cook for 15 mins, stirring frequently until soft but not too coloured. Add the garlic for the final 2 minutes of cooking. While the fennel cooks place the pork mince and bread crumbs into a mixing bowl. Wash half the tarragon and shake dry, pick the leaves and finely chop them. Strip the leaves from 3 generous thyme stalks. Grate one of the apples, skin and all, discard the core. Add the chopped herbs and grated apple to the pork, season well with salt and pepper. Add the fennel mix when ready. Mix very well. Preheat the oven to 190˚C/170˚C fan/gas mark 5. Spread the sausage meat evenly along the centre of the puff pastry, lengthways. Roll the pastry over the filling, allow for a 1cm overlap and trim away the excess pastry. Beat the egg with a tiny dash of water. Brush a line of egg wash on the inside edge of the pastry join and press together to seal. Cut the roll into two evenly sized pieces. Place on the baking tray and brush each with egg wash. Scatter over the poppy seeds and bake in the middle of the oven for 25 mins until golden and risen. While the rolls cook wash, drain and dry the salad leaves. Thinly slice the other half of the fennel bulb, wash the apple and cut into quarters, cut out the core and slice each quarter into thin wedges. Peel the cucumber, split lengthways in half and remove the seeds with the tip of a teaspoon. Slice into 1cm thick angled slices. In a clean bowl mix the fennel, cucumber and apple with the juice of half the lemon and 3 tbsps of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Remove the sausage rolls from the oven, leave to cool for 5 mins. Add the salad leaves to the dressed apple and fennel. Serve alongside the sausage rolls with a blob of chutney.

FOOD MATTERS Sarah Robertson (left) and Carla Noak at the Mount Wise Café

Sarah’s latest success Plymouth’s booming restaurant and café sector has received another boost this summer, with the opening of Mount Wise Café in the stunning new development overlooking the Tamar estuary. With views to Plymouth CC’s cricket ground outside and delicious fare made on the premises using local produce inside, it’s no wonder the café has already built a reputation as a ‘village’ eatery in the heart of the city. For owner Sarah Gilbertson – one of the UK launch team of Groupon – it’s the latest venture which she’s running alongside her Result Coach business. In fact, her Result Coach team has

been involved every step of the way as Sarah had only just returned from three weeks maternity leave when they heard about the opportunity. “My baby girl Elspeth was only six weeks old when we opened so I was carrying her around everywhere at the time,” said Sarah. The café opened its doors in June, with Sarah’s friend and team member Carla Noak moving across from Result Coach to be general manager: “Those weeks before we opened were crazy!” said Carla. “We had to do everything. Come up with a new name, new branding and a new menu which meant building relationships with suppliers. But I feel we’ve massively pulled it off.”

Home-made fare goes down a treat at Mount Wise Café • continued from previous page

The ethos at Mount Wise Café can be summed up in a few words: local, fresh, home-made, simple, tasty. All the food is made in the café’s kitchen, using locally-sourced ingredients from farmers in Devon and Cornwall. Other suppliers include Burts crisps, Portlebay Popcorn, Devon Coffee Company and Luscombe Drinks. Sarah uses their eggs benedict as a perfect example of what the café is all about: “Free range local eggs with thick-cut gammon from a Cornish supplier, roasted in-house, hand sliced and topped with a home-made hollandaise. And the left over egg whites are used to make our meringues. That’s us in a nutshell. The environment is also important to us and as part of the zero to landfill, all of our food waste goes 20 minutes up the road to Langage Farm, for compost.” Carla added: “Simple food, done well is what we do. It’s home from home and people seem to like it. We’ve had a really good response and a lot of our customers come back. One of our regulars keeps his teacup here so he can use it every time he comes in! “Plymouth Albion are just over the road and we had them in the other day, all having brunch after their morning training. It’s handy having the Result Coach office just down the road because we can ring them and they come over to help at times like that.”

It’s not just Albion who’ve cottoned on to the café – the business community has, too. Sarah explained: “It’s a great location, near the city but not in the city and the relaxed atmosphere we have is ideal for networking, meetings or just for a change of scene from the office.” The café has free Wifi and parking, and power sockets are available. Businesses can have bottomless tea and coffee and a bacon sandwich for £6 per person – and they’re welcome to stay. “We don’t rush any of our customers, their table is theirs for as long as they want it,” said Carla. The all-day breakfast menu includes the highly recommended Mount Wise Breakfast and Mount Wise Veggie Breakfast. Toast, porridge, smoked salmon and eggs on toast, breakfast baps and pancakes are also popular. Sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and a variety of salads are served for brunch and lunch, together with homemade soups and hot meals including pasta dishes – again, all home-made. There’s also a range of cakes made in turns by staff, often to their own recipes, as well as ice-cream and the Mount Wise Special – meringue, frozen summer berries and vanilla ice-cream. The café is about to get the goahead to sell alcohol alongside its range of hot and cold soft drinks. For autumn and winter, the team will be cooking up hearty warmers such as stews – perfect for the Mount Wise riverside walkers and anglers who pop in, and Sarah and Carla are

promising something a bit special for Christmas. And that’s not all they’re working on: “There’s potentially another café in the pipeline on the other side of the city which we’d also use as a training centre,” revealed Sarah. “We’re hoping that will happen before the end of the year.” It’s another success story for Sarah, who with five others was in at the launch of Groupon UK. By the time she left four years ago, it had 800 staff: “That was a brilliant experience, travelling the UK and helping businesses to develop,” she said. Sarah set up Result Coach Limited when she moved to Plymouth two years ago. The hospitality consultancy now helps businesses across the south of England to grow and expand. Her team includes Becki Hastings, who she met through the Military Wives Choir and now co-owns the café with Sarah. “The pair of them still burst into song when they think no-one’s listening,” said Carla. All three women have husbands in the Royal Navy who are always on hand to test out new menu ideas: “The whole operation is like one big family – and we include the staff in that,” said Carla, whose mum Sharon is supervisor at the café. Sarah’s dad also comes down from London regularly to help out. Mount Wise Café is open 8am to 4pm Mondays to Wednesdays and 8am to 5pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Weekend opening is 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and 11am to 3pm on Sundays.

Talented young friers bid for national title Two young people from Plymouth have reached the national finals of a prestigious competition to find the country's top young fish friers. Andrew Hillier, 22, and 19-year-old Lisa Lishman of Harbourside Fish & Chips on the Barbican have been named as two of the UK’s top 10 fish friers after they were both shortlisted for the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year Award as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish. Andrew and Lisa are now competing at the highest level as they go up against the other contenders ‘fishing’ for the top prize. To get to this stage and secure a place in the coveted shortlist, the friers have undergone a gruelling judging process involving the undertaking of telephone interviews and completion of exam questionnaires. The pair, who have both worked for Harbourside for two and a half years, underwent a skills based assessment and presentation at a rigorous testing day at the National Federation of Fish Friers Training School in Leeds. Lisa, who lives in Plymstock, said: "We have to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the industry, cut and prepare fish,

make chips and also present our own marketing ideas." It is the second year that they have reached the finals and are now hoping that they reach the five finalists who will compete to be crowned champion at the London awards ceremony in January next year. By reaching the finals last year, Andrew and Lisa have been on a variety of trips and workshops to improve their skills - all thanks to the National Federation of Fish Friers. Andrew, from Plympton said: "I didn't realise how big the industry was until I started working at Harbourside. I've learned so much in my time here and have a clear understanding of the importance of sustainability of fish stocks." The Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year Award encourages the younger generation in the industry to nurture their individual skills and talent to become positive role models for other young people working in the fish and chip sector. Briar Wilkinson, sales director at Drywite said: “We’ve been running this competition for 20 years now and this year the standard of entries has again been exceptionally high. “Our goal for the competition was to demonstrate how worthwhile a career in fish frying could be for talented young people in the industry.” Andrew and Lisa's achievement is the latest in a long line of award-winning successes for Harbourside Fish & Chips, including regional winner of the National Fish and Chip Awards in 2015. The business has also been shortlisted for the 2016 Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.

Inspired by the tapestries of Grayson Perry, Taste is a delicious romp of a show with humour, irreverence and playfulness at its heart. Blending dance from choreographers Sally Knight and Neil Paris, and writing from Murray Lachlan Young, Taste explores what defines our identity

The newly christened Rockfish Blue Mile will make its first big splash on Saturday September 5 in Plymouth on the opening weekend of the Ocean City Festival. As ever, the event will start from the historic Mayflower Steps, with participants swimming, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding their way around the waterfront in a one-mile circular course. Thousands of people are expected to line the Barbican and Hoe to cheer on family and friends in the popular event, which encourages people to get actively involved with the blue environment. Rockfish owner – restaurateur and keen watersports enthusiast Mitch Tonks – says the Blue Mile shares the same passion as his restaurants for the South West coastline, which Rockfish has dubbed ‘Britain’s Seafood Coast’. Mitch said: “Whether it’s the food it gives us or the fun times, Rockfish seafood restaurants are everything to do with the sea. So we’re delighted to be supporting an established event that gets everyone involved with everything that’s fantastic about our coastline in the South West. “Our own staff have just set up a paddleboarding club. We’re very lucky to be on the coast and have that sort of opportunity right on our doorstep.” All those taking part in the Rockfish Blue Mile are being asked to fundraise for the Shark Trust. The Plymouth event aims to raise £10,000 to support the Trust, which works globally to safeguard the future of the iconic species through positive change. The charity’s managing director, Paul Cox, said: “The Shark Trust is delighted to be the new charity partner of the Rockfish Blue Mile. All the event partners are dedicated to protecting our blue environment and we look forward to working together to raise awareness and much-needed funds to help achieve this.” The Trust is hoping the link-up with the Rockfish Blue Mile will reach new supporters to help with such work. The Blue Mile was created by triple round-the-world sailor and ocean advocate, Conrad Humphreys, with the aim of encouraging the nation to get active in support of the blue environment. Conrad, of Plymouth-based Sport Environment, said getting Rockfish and the Shark Trust on board was great news: “We’re thrilled that Mitch and the Rockfish team have agreed to support the Rockfish Blue Mile and that we are joined today by Paul Cox and the Shark Trust as our new official charity partner. “The goal of the Blue Mile has always been to connect people with our blue environment and encourage the nation to get out and enjoy our wonderful coastline. We’ve got a range of disciplines and we want people to sign up to take part and, crucially, to get family and friends to sponsor them. Let’s raise that £10,000 for the Shark Trust.”

Introducing... Howard and Enzo

HOME BASED CARERS NEEDED

Could you be a Shared Lives carer? If caring means more to you than just a job, we need to hear from you.

Sharks have gained themselves a bad reputation in recent years, striking fear into people around the world at the simple sight of a dorsal fin. But the National Marine Aquarium’s two resident Sand Tiger Sharks Howard and Enzo defy this theory, having gained a reputation for being more mischievous than menacing. Howard and Enzo are the National Marine Aquarium’s largest shark species, and easily the most entertaining sharks on the block. Despite their rather unfortunate and fearsome appearance, which sees their mouthful of sharp teeth protrude in all directions, even when their mouths are shut, Howard and Enzo are actually very docile and laid back – and quite the characters. For more information on Howard and Enzo or the many other marine species at the National Marine Aquarium, visit www.nationalaquarium.co.uk.

Your personal approach and caring experience (whether paid or unpaid) are more important to us than qualifications. You will work in your own home, receive ongoing training and support as well as weekly fees.

We work with adults with learning disabilities, people with mental health issues and people with needs related to older age. Our carers come from all walks of life but what they all have in common is their experience, knowledge and passion for providing the very best service.

Sept 5 PLYMOUTH & NAPOLEON: 1815/2015 Roland Levinsky Building Something truly remarkable happened in Plymouth Sound in the summer of 1815: the presence on guard and on board HMS Bellerophon, of a vanquished emperor. From across Britain, thousands came to witness the event: crowding on the little boats and the Breakwater to glimpse this disturber of the

world and ‘most extraordinary man of modern times’. There will be guest speakers and experts from Plymouth University commemorating the 200th anniversary of the ‘sublime spectacle’ and ‘object of boundless curiosity’ in talks about the wider context, local and national impact, image-making and memories of the days when Napoleon came.

Sept 19 - Nov 14 IVAN CHERMAYEFF - CUT AND PASTE Peninsula Arts Gallery Ivan Chermayeff is one of the world’s greatest graphics designers. Co-founder of renowned design agency Chermayeff & Geismar, and son of Russian-born architect Serge Chermayeff, he is responsible for some of the world’s most memorable logos and branding including the Mobil ‘O’, National Geographic and Smithsonian. Until Sept 26 FALLEN EMPEROR: NAPOLEON IN PLYMOUTH SOUND IN 1815 Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery In the summer of 1915, for nine dramatic days, HMS Bellerophon was anchored in Plymouth Sound

The work of renowned international artist Gerard Richter is featured in the Artist Rooms exhibition at Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery

with the self-styled French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte on board. Napoleon had been defeated at Waterloo and surrendered himself into the care of the Royal Navy. The lengthy and costly Napoleonic Wars were over - but what to do with Napoleon now? The exhibition is entered on the popular painting from the collections by Jules Girardet and will explore the differing perceptions of Napoleon on his journey to Plymouth. Admission free. Sept 26 - Jan 16 ARTIST ROOMS: GERHARD RICHTER Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery This exhibition will examine the breadth and depth of the practice of Gerhard Richter, recognised as one of the world’s most significant living artists, through a carefully chosen selection of paintings and prints. The works that will be on display are taken from Artist Rooms, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art acquired for the nation by Tate and The National Galleries of Scotland through the generosity of Anthony D’Offay with

additional support from funders, including the Art Fund. Oct 6 - 29 DREAM CARGO: STANLEY DONWOOD’S ARTWORK FOR J.G. BALLARD’S PUBLICATIONS Crosspoint, Roland Levinsky Building Stanley Donwood, artist and writer, received an email from J.G. Ballard’s publishers asking if he would create cover art and design for 21 of the author’s works. In Donwood’s words: “As Ballard is arguably the finest and most peculiar novelist to work in English in the 20th century, and perhaps my favourite writer, the outcome of the email was a foregone conclusion.” In producing the cover designs, Donwood worked with scientists in their laboratories, using acids, combustion, X-rays, chromatography, and various other experimental techniques working with the instinct that J.G. Ballard regarded his writing as a sort of experiment itself. Oct 10 - Jan 16 FIJI: OCEAN CONNECTIONS This newly-developed world cultures exhibition will explore the surprising connections between Plymouth and Polynesia. Over a hundred artefacts from the Pacific island of Fiji have travelled to the Museum since the late

1800s. The exhibition will display a selection of these, including barkcloths, weapons, shells and jewellery. As well as highlighting aspects of island life, ‘Fiji: Ocean Connections’ will show the complexity and beauty of Western Polynesian art and culture, investigating how oceans connect Plymouth with the Pacific.

Oct 12 - 24 CHEZ PAULETTE COFFEE HOUSE Crosspoint, Roland Levinsky Building Following the success of Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip in 2013, Peninsula Arts is delighted that it returns as part of this year’s Plymouth International Book Festival. Artist and Plymouth University fine art lecturer Anya Lewin commissioned a replica of her father’s 1950s coffee house in the form of a film set that references the American TV Show ’77 Sunset Strip’ which also featured a set of the original Chez Paulette cafe. Operating as a fully functioning coffee bar throughout the festival, it is the perfect venue to enjoy fine coffee, listen to poetry and readings. Free admission.

Oct 14 PERFORMANCE: SCHLOCK! The House In the grand tradition of literary terrorism, Hannah Silva has ripped up her copy of Fifty Shades of Grey and now, surrounded by the crumpled pages and with the help of radical punk-pirate Kathy Acker, she attempts to put the female body back together. Join them on a journey through texts and voices pregnant with pain and pleasure, mothers and babies, domination and submission. In a performance as strange as it is beautiful, we discover there are no safe words. Until Oct 31 FROM PLYMOUTH TO THE WORLD: THE VOYAGE OF PLYMOUTH GIN FROM BIRTH TO LEGEND The city of Plymouth has long been regarded as the birthplace of adventurers, the homeport of a famed naval fleet, and the native home of the world’s most iconic spirits: Plymouth Gin. a helping hand

Plymouth families are being encouraged to take a walk on the wild side and gear up for the South West Coast Path Challenge in October. The event, backed by TV adventurer Monty Halls, aims to set a new world record for the number of times the Coast Path can be covered in one month while raising funds to protect the coastline for future generations. Monty said: “As part of the South West Coast Path Challenge month, I’ll be walking the South Devon stretch from Plymouth to Dartmouth.

“I am a huge fan of the South West Coast Path - some of my happiest memories have been running and walking it, and it snakes right past my house in Dartmouth. I feel it’s one of the most miraculous trails in Europe.” Walkers can create their own challenge of one mile, five miles, 100 miles, or the entire 630 mile National Trail, every mile counts! For inspiration visit the website where there are details of what other people have pledged and view the recommended itineraries, or join one of four organised 10 mile challenge events taking place each Saturday throughout October in all four counties through which the Coast Path travels. Plymouth is to host a walk from Admiral’s Hard to the Mount Batten Centre on Saturday October 24. Britain’s Ocean City reveals a wealth of historic maritime heritage from a restored naval base at Royal William Yard to the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail. Hayley Partridge, South West Coast Path events officer said: “I am really looking forward to seeing the different challenges that people create to add their miles to the record. I am hoping to see families and friends get together to challenge each other to attempt different sections of the South West Coast Path and have a great day out while supporting our beautiful Coast Path at the same time!” The National Trust, which this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of its coastline appeal, is the event’s charity partner. It costs at least £1,000 every year to look after one mile of Coast Path, keeping it open and accessible to the public and it needs the public's help.

EDUCATION MATTERS ADVERTORIAL

Be part of it -

what can City College Plymouth offer you?

If you are a young person who wants a different experience from school, then knowing what your options are and getting the right information is essential to planning your next steps. Although you need to stay in education or training until your 18th birthday, that doesn’t mean that you have to stay on at school. Young people have several choices: you can continue to stay in fulltime education at school; attend college on a full-time, vocational course; continue your studies parttime at college while working or volunteering; or you can apply for an apprenticeship, which allows you to earn while you learn. College business student, James Lillie, 17, knows the importance of getting advice on the options available. He explained: “When I was at school, I just assumed it was a process of school, sixth form, then university, because they didn’t really inform you about other options like college or apprenticeships. I’m just glad I have the confidence now to be able to make those decisions and take advantage of the opportunities available.” City College Plymouth offers free drop-in information evenings so that you can get the advice you need on vocational BTECs, apprenticeships, professional courses and university-level Foundation Degrees. A Level 3 BTEC is the equivalent to studying three A Levels and can be a practical route to university or higher-level training for those who are looking to move on from school. At the college you can study a wide variety of subjects from bricklaying to hospitality, hair and beauty to plumbing and everything in between. You can apply even if you haven’t achieved a grade C or above in GCSE maths and English. Our professional, vocational and technical study programmes enable you to study these part-time alongside your chosen course in a

50\

format which is tailored to your subject area; so all the work that you do is directly supporting you in your future career. The college has excellent links with local employers and our industry-standard facilities ensure that you receive the best true-to-life, vocational training and that you leave us workready, with great employability skills. The college’s award-winning careers team will also be on-hand to offer high quality, impartial careers advice, and college staff will be there to discuss the support which may be available to you, including funding, childcare and travel costs. Attending a drop-in evening is a great way to get the information you need to help you make the right decision on your future. City College alumni include city achievers like Michelin starred chef, Anton Piotrowski; city innovators like Princess Yachts’ managing director, Chris Gates and city leaders like polar explorer, Antony Jinman. So why not find out where City College could take you? At the drop-in events, you will get the opportunity to: • speak to experienced careers advisors for free impartial advice and guidance • explore which of our professional, vocational and technical study programmes or apprenticeships is right for you • find out how you can improve your GCSE English and maths grades alongside your chosen course • talk to our knowledgeable staff about funding and learning support. To celebrate the launch of two exclusive departures from Bristol Airport to see the Northern Lights, this month I thought it would be helpful to give you some facts about one of the most amazing sights you’ll ever see. Many beliefs surround the illusive Northern Lights also known as the Aurora Borealis. In Norse mythology the lights were believed to be the reflections of the shields of the Valkyries racing across the sky on By Travel their way to their final resting place, Expert Valhalla. Anthony Goord Today we know them to be produced by waves of charged particles. The particles, emitted by our sun, are attracted to the earth’s magnetic poles where they interact with various gases in the earth’s upper atmosphere, creating the vivid glow of blues and greens across sky. Their romantic appeal has not decreased due to this discovery, in fact they are as sought after as ever, taking the number one spot on most British travellers bucket list of things to experience, so when and where are you most likely to see the lights? The simple answer is, between October and March, and as far north as possible. It is true they have made appearances in Scotland and have been spotted as far south as Cornwall, but these sightings are indeed rare. Although sightings are never guaranteed, to increase your chances of seeing them you should wrap up warm and head for the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle sits at 66°33’N. At this point of latitude the sun doesn’t rise on the day of the winter solstice (and doesn’t set at the summer solstice), though, as the sun is

hovering just below the horizon, the Arctic Circle never goes completely dark – there’s always a bit of dusky twilight. The further north into the Arctic Circle you go, the longer the periods of winter darkness. The climate inside the Arctic Circle is generally cold, but as a result of the Gulf Stream the coastal areas of northern Norway tend to have milder climate than the inland. To give you an idea of the temperatures you’ll face whilst in search of the northern lights, the average daily temperatures in degrees Celsius are listed below for Tromsø. Remember, wind-chill factor can reduce these figures. Tromsø Sep 6.9°C/Oct 2.7°C / Nov -1.2°C / Dec -3.4°C / Jan -4.4°C / Feb -4.3°C / Mar -2.8°C The northern lights belt hits Northern Norway in the Lofoten Island and follows the coast all the way up to the North Cape. Due to this no other place on earth provides you with better chances of spotting the lights! The driest weather, providing clear skies, is found inland, generally provides you with the best chances of seeing the lights however with strong eastern winds, the coastal areas can be clearer than the inland areas. A wonderful way to experience the lights is on board a cruise with Hurtigruten along the coast and away from artificial light. Hurtigruten have teamed up with Peter Goord Travel to offer two great departures flying from Bristol Airport on the February 16 2016 for a 6 day voyage from just £1059 per person or a five day voyage on the March 13 from just £949 per person sailing from Tromso. If you have always wanted to see the Northern Lights these itineraries will give you some of the best opportunities to do so. The added bonus of flying from Bristol Airport and having free parking included makes these departures extra special. If you’d like to book or require more details on either voyage please give myself or my team a call. Happy Holidays!

PROPERTY MATTERS

Thinking of moving home? September is traditionally a busy month for house sales and strong demand continues for good quality property in Plymouth and the surrounding area. Paul Hussell, a consultant solicitor with Plymouth-based law firm Thompson and Jackson, heads up the country homes and waterside department. He has seen the department grow from strength Paul Hussell, to strength in the last 18 months. consultant solicitor He said:"The key ingredient for a for Thompson and successful sale or, indeed, purchase Jackson, explains why is ensuring all the paperwork is in you should choose a place as soon as possible. bespoke conveyancing “We recently handled the sale service that is as of probably the most expensive unique as you are! residential property in the south west last year, securing an exchange of contracts within ten working days. "This was achieved by taking the time to meet the sellers at the property, to walk the boundaries and at the outset to look at all the issues a potential buyer’s solicitor would want to raise and, perhaps most importantly, to then find answers to those issues and questions. "When a buyer was found, a comprehensive pack was issued, removing many of the usual delays which can occur.” As many law firms operate remotely from their clients, one of the clear advantages of a more ‘hand-held’ approach is that time can be saved. Paul said: “We always try to visit every country home and waterside property we sell or buy for a client. The ability to correlate what is in the deeds and documents with what is on site can save a considerable amout

of time. More often than not, it is a problem-solving exercise. “We were recently instructed to purchase a lovely property in a prime waterside location. With buyers fighting to secure the property, time was crucial. "An offer from our clients was duly accepted and we secured an exchange of contracts in only four days from receipt of the contract papers. It was fast and furious but visiting the house resolved numerous issues and ensured our clients secured the property of their dreams. "This was only possible because, as a department, we are able to create time to offer a bespoke service for our clients.” What is clear is that not all lawyers are the same.

It could be argued that we should be putting more healthy recipes in this column and perhaps we will in future. But if you want to start getting your children helping you in the kitchen then it is often the unhealthy recipes that will do it – and this one certainly falls into that category! But they do say that everything is OK in moderation! I am a strong believer that if you involve your child in the process of By Liz cooking then they will eat the meal Crudgington much more readily. If you start of the with recipes like this your children will develop a love of food and you Roundabout can soon develop that to include Day Nursery savoury dishes and vegetables. Part of the joy of cooking is trying the food as you go and as you develop that to include vegetables children can enjoy munching on raw peppers, carrots and other vegetables in a very natural, unforced way. Sometimes we can make food too much of an issue, focusing on what our children will and won’t eat. But if we include children in the whole process it can become something that is enjoyed by the whole family together, from the preparation and cooking through to sitting round the table to eat it. This recipe is perhaps more suited to an older child, 8 and over helping due to the use of hot chocolate, water and a knife for cutting the walnuts. This is what you’ll need; √√ 100g plain chocolate (melted by putting it into a bowl over a boiling pan of water) √√ 2 large eggs √√ ½ teaspoon vanilla essence √√ 125 g butter √√ 275g caster sugar √√ 50g self raising flour √√ 25g plain flour √√ 2 tablespoons cocoa powder √√ 100g walnuts (chopped) √√ 20cm square cake tin, lined with greaseproof paper Instructions: • Beat together the vanilla essence, sugar and butter • Add the beaten eggs • Add the flours and cocoa powder • Add the melted chocolate followed by the walnuts • Put into the lined tin • Cook for 35 minutes (GM4, 180˚C), then leave in tin to cool before cutting and removing

Westcountry Tile and Bathroom – making a big splash with homeowners Jamie Shewbrook

Jamie Shewbrook’s decision to start his Westcountry Tile and Bathroom business after more than 20 years working for corporates in the industry has well and truly paid off, with the Crownhill showroom being expanded and more staff being taken on to help with demand. And, when you walk around the showroom, it’s easy to see why it’s made such a big splash within 18 months of opening. From the very latest in bathroom design and technology to classy traditional suites, the shop at Christian Mill Business Park has something to suit all tastes and types of property. As well as the middle to high end bathrooms on show, there is also a range of smart accessories – the finishing touches to a stunning new bathroom. After 23 years of experience in the business, Jamie – who opened the showroom in April 2014 – knows the importance of being at the forefront of trends and of freshening-up his displays of designer bathrooms. Earlier this year he visited Germany to attend ISH, the world’s leading bathroom trade fair, and the showroom is now taking delivery of some of the brand new products that were on show. The range is proving so popular that Jamie has just taken on two additional sales staff to join the team which also includes his parents Paul and Sue and his fiancé Melanie. With specialist teams of tilers, decorators, electricians, plasterers and plumbers, West Country Tile and Bathroom will turn your dream bathroom into a reality while you just sit back and relax.

58\

The Plymouth Magazine September 2015

Jamie loves seeing an initial concept develop into a fabulous bathroom: “Designing bathrooms has always been my passion,” he said. “My background was in heating and plumbing but I always wanted to take the plunge and do this. And it’s been great.” A new display bay has just been added to the showroom and is fitted with a working whirlpool bath complete with rain-shower and hand-set – all operated digitally and surrounded by beautiful tiles: “We only fitted it two days ago and we’ve already sold the concept twice,” said Jamie. “The three-way digital processor controls the bath and shower options, sets the temperature and regulates the flow. It also tells you the litreage.” Jamie expects another of his ‘finds’ at the ISH trade fair to prove equally popular. His showroom will be the first in the South West to have the freestanding Bette Lux Press Steel bath: “It’s stunning – and people can see it here first because the only other place in the country that has it is in London.” A ‘tri-oval’ Duravit Cape Cod hand basin, set in oak, is another new arrival that’s set to turn heads. When Plymouth Magazine visited the showroom, Jamie was awaiting delivery of waterproof TVs, for those looking for a bit of luxury while soaking in the bath. Jamie explained: “In recent times the kitchen and bathroom have become more and more important rooms in the house, people are spending more time in them. “Homeowners are also opting to stay where they are

rather than move but they’re upgrading their bathrooms and kitchens and what they want is quality.” There’s plenty of that at Westcountry Tile and Bathroom, with brands such as Villeroy & Boch, Duravit, Matki, Hansgrohe, Keuco and Arcade to name just a few. There are also beautiful affordable bathrooms for more compact spaces, with no compromise on style and a range of aids for older people or those with limited mobility. With a wide selection of tiles, heated towel rails, mirrors, bins and other designer accessories, customers can choose exactly the look they want. There are even crystal-laden taps for hand basins – and a sink that’s part of a vintage bike. At the front of the shop is a steam cabin with heated seat – but for sheer luxury, first prize must go to the ‘hands-free’ Duravit wall-mounted toilet and Geberit flush plate with built-in fan. It’s operated with a remote control that lifts and shuts the lid and seat, which can be heated to a desired temperature: “It’s a bidet and toilet in one,” said Jamie. “The remote is used to wash and dry so there’s no need for toilet roll and then it flushes. It’s my pride and joy!” Jamie does all the designing, working with customers to ensure their ideas are brought to life: “People can just pop in for a chat and we’ll show them around and get an idea of what they like.” explained Jamie. “We’ll then visit their house to assess what’s possible.” Word of mouth is one of the factors behind the showroom’s success and customers can buy with confidence as all work comes with a warranty. Visit the website for more information or better still, pop into the showroom to see the very latest arrivals.

Big demand for exclusive bungalo

Tony Carlton (left) and Kevin Buckingham of Mansbridge & Balment on site at Caradon Close

Award-winning Sunnybanks Homes have started construction of eleven four-bedroom detached bungalows at Caradon Close, Derriford, just off Powisland Drive Graham Clark, planning director at Sunnybanks Homes said: “We had an excellent response to the coverage of the Caradon Close development in the June issue of the Plymouth Magazine. There is clearly a significant demand for high quality bungalows in Plymouth and we are now intending to actively follow up all the expressions of interest from potential buyers. With the first bungalows expected to be available in late 2015 we would recommend that any potential buyers act quickly to avoid disappointment. "We have just exchanged contracts on Plot 1 at Caradon Close on an off-plan basis because the buyers were very keen to secure the plot they particularly wanted." "We have a longstanding reputation for building quality, superior bungalows. The site at Caradon Close offered us the opportunity to build spacious four-bedroom bungalows which are rarely – if ever – built, particularly in such a prestigious location, just off Powisland Drive which is one of the most favoured areas The Westbrook in Plymouth. We are aware of only a handful being built in the whole of the south-west so the opportunity to purchase one does not come along very often. "Our recent development of four detached bungalows in nearby Woolwell Drive, proved to

60\

be very popular and set the benchmark in terms of price and standards. We think these bungalows will be even better and more popular, judging by the number of enquiries we have already received. Bungalows of this size and standard, which cater for the difficulties of downsizing from a large house whilst also comfortably accommodating the demands of visits from an extended family, do not come along very often.” The first three bungalows have now been released, with prices starting at £487,500 with the first anticipated being complete and ready for occupation in December Ten of the bungalows have an internal floor space of 1,666 square feet and have either an integral or detached double garage taking the total floor space to just under 2,000 square feet. Each bungalow has four double bedrooms, as well as a spacious lounge and kitchen/breakfast room which both open onto a sunny rear garden. The master bedroom and guest bedroom have en-suite shower rooms. Four of the bungalows have a double width driveway access direct onto Caradon Close. The other seven are accessed off a private road. The 'Westbrook' at 4, Caradon Close is a four-bedroom detached bungalow with integral double garage with optional electric doors, has a feature brick frontage with concrete tiles that reflect the character of some of the houses in Caradon Close. years to find suitable education for them. After 18 months of campaigning, rallying support and bringing together a team of dedicated volunteers with a wide range of educational skills and other experience, the vision for the Ausum Academy Plymouth was realised. In a month's time they will submit a 100-page document to the Department for Education in a bid to secure funding for the new free school. To stand any chance of success they need Plymouth City Council to commit to taking places at the new school and also have to provide evidence of the need for such an establishment. Jane said: "We have met with the local authority on a number of occasions and they do recognise that Plymouth does have a gap in its educational provision. We also have the support of around 120 families who have confirmed that their child or young person would benefit from a school like the Ausum Academy. "We would encourage any parents or carers who have children on the autistic spectrum to fill in our parent support form, which can be found on our website at www. ausumacademyplymouth.co.uk. "The more parents who complete this form the better chance we will have of securing the chance to present our proposals to the Department for Education," added Jane. Adele said that they would also welcome the support of more volunteers who could help take the plans forward. "We would love to hear from people with experience in autism and education provision and especially someone with legal expertise to help with the whole legal framework. "We already have a dedicated core team supporting the initiative and have recently established a leadership team with particular expertise at secondary level." Earlier this year the initiative received the backing of the Free Schools Network, a charity which helps individuals, groups and other organisations to establish free schools. The Network gave invaluable advice to the Ausum team and also provided funding for marketing and other activity. The Ausum story started around two years ago when Adele, who lives in Peverell, contacted Plymouth MP Oliver Colvile to see if he could help with the problems she was facing finding suitable education for her son. He suggested that Adele explore the possibility of establishing a free school tailored to the needs of youngsters with autism.

Adele, who lives in Peverell, said: "He asked me if I would be prepared to lead the project and I knew if I didn't do something, more and more families would experience the same problems as us." Adele posted a petition on Facebook looking for support from other parents and carers and Jane contacted her to share the problems she had faced with her son. The pair soon realised that there were scores of families in the same position in Plymouth and decided to embark on the campaign for a free school. Jane said: "It is estimated that as many as one in six of school age children in Plymouth are on the autistic spectrum - which is significantly higher than the national average. "Ausum will meet the specific needs of those children with autism for whom placement in a traditional special school for children with learning difficulties is not appropriate, but who nonetheless struggle to manage within a mainstream setting. “The aim is a specialist child centred provision that nurtures the child as a whole, using flexible timetables and therapeutic approaches in an autism sensitive environment to cultivate a students strengths, as well as develop social and emotional connections." Adele said that the proposed school would cater for around 100 children aged between four and 19 and if they are successful in their bid for funding, would open in 2017. "It may come too late to be of significant benefit for our sons, but we have to fight on for families who are just coming to terms with these difficulties."

GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE

Colourful suggestions for By Derek Anderson So here we are in September, where has the time gone? I can’t believe that we are now into autumn, the summer seems to have gone by in a blur, probably because we’ve had a busy year in the garden centre. Now that the summer season has come to an end, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all has to come to an end in the garden. In fact September is my favourite month for gardening. It’s that last big splash of colour in our borders before everything retires for winter. It is certainly the most colourful month in my garden. It feels like that garden is giving us one last big crescendo before it retires for winter. Many plants hit their peak in September, after growing them for months through the summer your hard work is finally rewarded with a beautiful show of colour. To prolong this colour as long as possible, regularly deadhead your plants and this will encourage more blooms to follow. Ease up on feeding them though, this will only encourage new growth which will be soft and young and susceptible to damage when frosts hit it. This is also the time of year when fruit and vegetable crop are ready for harvesting and should hopefully provide you with bumper crops. A common question we get asked in the garden centre, especially by new or novice gardeners is ‘how do I make my pots and borders look good? I’ve bought plants and planted them, but it just looks like a big jumble.’ Well, my response to this is that style and design is subjective and it is down to personal taste, but there are a few basic pointers and guidelines that I like to follow that are pretty fool proof to plant layouts and garden design. My first bit of advice is plant in odd numbers. Planting in odd numbers always looks more aesthetically pleasing to the eye and creates a more natural look. Try to not plant in even numbers because this will avoid having a border with plants that are all in a row. It made me think about how many of us take our inspiration from the natural landscape itself. It has a natural chaos about it, a less ordered or managed look. Plant in groups of three, five, seven, or nine as opposed to two, four, six or eight. This is because even numbers are subconsciously divided into equal halves by the mind to reinforce a man-made, orderly aesthetic. Odd numbers cannot be subconsciously divided into equal halves, so the arrangement is interpreted as more naturalistic and the planting appears more cohesive and pleasing to the eye.

64\

The Plymouth Magazine September 2015

Derek recommends choosing colourful combination s like this - Top Lobelia Cardinalis; Middle Dahlia Bishop-ofLlandaff and Bottom Rio Heuchera

The only situation where having an even number of plants works well, is in formal gardening, where structure, order, balance and symmetry are the key elements to the deign working. My second bit of advice is to plant in drifts, blocks, groups and swathes as opposed to single plants. The reason behind this is that single plants can get lost or disappear in busy mixed borders. Planting in groups or swathes of the same type of plant creates a more natural, visual flow that is easy on the eye. Planting in straight lines, like even numbers can look stiff, regimented and a bit odd. Even in formal gardens, straight lines plants can look overbearing and uninspiring, which is why they are often broken up with topiary or sculptures. Blocking and drift planting makes it easier for the eye to follow the flow of the design. Large blocks and groups of the same plant with give a formal of order and neatness without looking stiff, as will repeat planting at intervals. Swathes and ribbon planting between blocks and groups with give the garden a softer more natural feel and helps to harmonise mixed plating schemes. My third bit of advice is the rule of triangles. The rule of triangles is a simple one, and is guaranteed to make a border look great. Simply arrange your plants so that it loosely forms a triangle. You should use your tallest plant as the anchor, as this will form your peak. Then you should gradually decrease the plants in size beside it, and the next ones beside and in front those should be smaller again. The effect you’ll get is a rough triangular shape and the plants within it will give you structure, and great contrast in height and size. Grouping of different sized triangles layered beside and in front of each other will create a well-balanced, visually pleasing border. The same principle can be applied to pots and hanging baskets. Finally the last piece of advice I have is possibly the most important to me and that is use of colour. Thinking about your colour choices can make or break a design. Buying a vast range of plants that you like the look of in every colour of the rainbow and throwing them together haphazardly will result in a mash up of colour that will be too busy, distracting, and confusing for the eye to focus on. For a visually pleasing design, the simplest way to achieve it is stick to one colour, but various different tones of it. This will give your design, structure and flow that is easy on the eye and won’t have any jarring colours that won’t complement each other. Here are some examples of colour schemes for late summer/autumn that work well: Pink: Pennisetum Fireworks, Heuchera Fire Chief, pink Chrysanthemums, pink

stunning autumn displays Asters, pink Hydrangeas, pink Anemones, pink Cyclamen, pink Pansies, Cordyline Southern Splendour and Gaura. Red: Pennisetum Samba, Heuchera Rio, Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff, Cannas, red Cyclamen, Penstemon, Gaultheria, Cordyline purpurea, Lobelia cardinalis, and Saliva Hot Lips. Orange: Cordyline Cha Cha, Helenium, Rudbeckia Summerina, Crocosmia, Kniphofia, Heuchera Marmalade, Celosia, orange Violas, orange Chrysanthemums and orange Dahlias. Yellow: Rudbeckia Goldstrum, yellow Chrysanthemums, yellow Pansies, Euonymus Emerald Gold, Heuchera Lime Marmalade, Cotinus Golden Spirit, Hakonechloa, Carex Evergold, Phormium Yellow Wave, Hypericum Hidcote, and Celosia. Blue/Purple: Platycodon, Campanula, Salvia, blue Pansies, Asters, Festuca glauca, Scabious, Ajuga, Vinca and Heuchera Plum Pudding. White/Silver: Cineraria, Cyclamen, Astelia, Convolvulus, Violas, Pansies, Anemones, Santolina, Leucanthemum, Miscanthus zebrina, White Chrysanthemums and Carex. If you want more colour and feel a bit more confident, then take inspiration from a colour wheel. This is basically a rainbow

Pennisetum Fireworks - works well with other reds in the garden

spread round in a circle. Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel blend together and complement each other nicely and give a pleasant visual effect when used together. Red, oranges and yellows look really good when grouped together and pinks, blues and purples harmonise well with each other. Once you have selected the colours you want to work with, think about the tone next. All pastel colours or all vibrant colours, not both. Pastels have a dulling effect on vibrant colours and hot colours can wash pastels out, therefore stick to one or the other. Pastel colours have a soft, soothing, calming influence, where as hot colours have a warm, bright, and uplifting influence. If you want to use colour to create contrast, then use colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. Not only do these colours contrast each other exceedingly well, but they also complement each other very well. Purple and yellow are great together as are orange and blue, red and green, and pink and lime. Follow these basic guidelines and you will be creating stunning gardens, just be sure to bring your pictures for us to marvel at! Happy Gardening!
