Christmas in Plymouth This winter, a magical world of festivities awaits in Britain’s Ocean City! With great shopping, spectacular events, bustling markets and family activities, there’s plenty to enjoy. We’ve got your ultimate guide to Christmas shopping, events and family fun, so read on and dive into the festive season with us to make the most of everything Plymouth has to offer.

Shop and Dine

With an amazing mix of top brand names and creative independents, you’ll be able to find something for even the trickiest people on your gift list! Make a day of your Christmas shopping and make time for a pit stop for lunch, or even a mulled wine to round off the day! Plymouth is becoming a real haven for foodies, with plenty of choice whether you want to grab a pasty on the go or enjoy a sit-down meal. Plymouth Market is the place to be for delicious grub: tuck into sourdough pizza at Knead Pizza, fresh Asian cuisine at Tea and Bun or sliders and sides at Tilt. If you’re in the north of the city centre and feeling hungry, pop into Hubbox for great burgers or pay a visit to Bill’s in Drake Circus for their twist on classic dishes. The Christmas Market, in place from 29 November to December 16, will also offer an outdoor Bavarian bar with mulled wine and entertainment, perfect for getting into the festive spirit! Just outside of the city centre, Plymouth’s Waterfront offers a relaxed and unique shopping experience with the many boutiques and art galleries on the Barbican, Sutton Harbour and Royal William Yard. Here you can pick up some unusual gifts and enjoy a wintry stroll beside the water, which will really help to blow away the cobwebs (useful if it’s the night after a Christmas party). Make it an extra special visit and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants offering indulgent treats, perfect for winter days.

a pantomime, so head to the Theatre Royal to see Dick Whittington, or the Plymouth Athenaeum as the hilarious Le Navet Bete return with another irreverent festive treat – this year they’ll perform Aladdin. Younger children will love ‘The Gingerbread Man’ in The Drum, a whirlwind of puppetry, humour and music, or Storytime with Father Christmas at Saltram House, featuring magical stories and songs. This year, the Barbican Theatre is offering an adult-only alternative to traditional Christmas pantos. Their brand new cabaret style show, An Evening with Krampus, promises comedy, live music, storytelling - and a childfree evening! Christmas in Plymouth also sees a whole host of events, from Christmas light switch-ons to markets, festivals and family friendly trails (find out more on pages 12 and 13).

There are 18 species of penguin and they are found in a variety of countries, primarily in the southern hemisphere

The name penguin was originally given to an unrelated bird species – the nowextinct great auk, which was a large, flightless, black and white bird.

Emperor penguins are able to cope with extreme cold as they have the highest density of feathers of any bird species – 100 feathers per square inch!

Penguins can dive to depths of over 250m, although most dives will be within the top 10m of water. The deepest dive ever recorded is by a female Emperor penguin which dived to 535m!

The biggest species is the Emperor penguin at 1.2m tall, whilst the smallest species is the Blue penguin (also known as the little or fairy penguin) at just over 30cm tall.

The fastest species of penguin is the Gentoo penguin, which can swim at up to 22mph.

Christmas on the Waterfront There’s so much going on this year on Plymouth’s waterfront to celebrate Christmas.

The festive celebrations on the Waterfront begin with The Barbican’s Christmas Lights Switch On, taking place on Sunday November 25 between 3pm and 6pm. Round up the family and join the crowds on Southside Street to meet the Grinch from 4pm, then greet Santa arriving aboard the RNLI at Capn’ Jaspers at 4.45pm and join in the official lights switch on at 5pm. There’ll also be performances from local community groups, theatre groups and schools. Why not get into the Christmas spirit and join in the best dressed elf competition! We’ll also be lighting St Andrew’s Street and St Andrew’s Church – don’t forget to pay a visit to this historic area as you visit the Waterfront and City Centre this festive season.

Polar Bear Explorer From November 25 a total of 20 Polar Bear cubs will be let loose in Plymouth’s Waterfront and will be hiding at locations in Sutton Harbour, the Barbican, Hoe, Millbay and the Royal William Yard. Your task will be to become a Polar Bear Explorer and find each of the Polar Bear cubs - you’ll have until March 3 to find them. This unmissable family friendly winter trail is a fun way to entertain the whole family this season. Along the way learn about the problems caused by plastic pollution on the Polar Bear’s natural Arctic habitat and gain new ideas on how we can lessen our impact on the marine environment.

22 \ The Plymouth Magazine Christmas Guide 2018

With 20 cuddly cubs to find and fantastic prizes up for grabs make sure you put on your exploring boots and head to Plymouth’s Waterfront this festive season. Trail cards will be available from the Tourist Information Centre on Southside Street, from participating stores, the National Marine Aquarium, Iceland on Mayflower Street and Smyths Toys at Friary Park, as well as being available online from visitplymouth.co.uk. Post your completed entry form into one of the Polar Bear Explorer post boxes for your chance to win! Don’t forget to share your Polar Bear selfies with us using #PlymouthPolarBears

Get out and about With such spectacular views and the South West Coast Path on our doorstep, make sure to take up the opportunity to get out and about this winter, explore the South West Coast Path from Royal William Yard around to Mountbatten, head over to Mount Edgcumbe to enjoy their festive programme of events and enjoy a walk in their spectacular grounds or get on the water and take part in the Great Santa Kayak.
