plymouth’s city of culture bid is a triumph for teamwork According to the bookmakers Plymouth is not one of the favourites to win the bid to become UK City of Culture in 2017. It will be a bitter disappointment if Plymouth is not in the final four – particularly as some of the bidders are not actually cities and in a couple of instances represent a group of locations. A huge amount of work went into preparing the bid and it required a lot of team work between Plymouth University, Plymouth City Council, the Plymouth Culture Board and a host of business organisations. It demonstrated just how well the public and private sectors can work together when it really matters. The support for the bid from the people of Plymouth has been overwhelming and the city is ‘currently leaving the other competing cities for dead’ according to Adrian Vinken, chief executive of the Theatre Royal and chair of the Plymouth Culture Board. Adrian added: “Win, lose or draw, what is clear is that the leadership commitment and public support generated by the bid so far means that we must maintain that momentum at all costs and drive through the transformation and growth of Plymouth’s creative and visitor economies now that they are there for the taking.” If successful, the bid could generate tens of millions of pounds for the city’s economy and create thousands of jobs. You can still show your support for the bid by going to the website of the DCMS and click on the Plymouth fireworks picture to show your support. Or visit www.facebook.com/dcmsgovuk and click on Photos then scroll down to the Plymouth image of fireworks on the Hoe and click on the ‘Like’ icon. Better still, leave a positive comment too. Hope you enjoy the latest issue!

kerry’s new business venture is just capital A Plymouth mother of three who enjoyed a successful career in sales and marketing has come up with a fashionable new business venture. Kerry Hamilton, whose home overlooks the River Tamar at Saltash Passage, launched ‘London’s Calling at Mine’ last year and it has proved a big success. Kerry travels to London on a regular basis to hand pick exclusive fashion at some of the capital’s trendiest markets from some of the top new designers. Returning to Plymouth with rails of new clothes she then organises shows in homes or at the workplace where ladies can buy the dresses and other lines at prices often cheaper than the High Street. Although she has no qualifications within the fashion industry, Kerry’s friends and acquaintances have always admired her dress sense and choice of outfits and accessories. “It was this that inspired me to launch London’s Calling,” said Kerry. “I trekked the Great Wall of China in aid of Jeremiah’s Journey in October 2011 and the whole experience really changed my outlook on life. I knew I wanted to do something different.” Having spent nearly 20 years in sales and marketing, Kerry is an accomplished negotiator and using this and her fashion sense she travelled to London in the spring of 2012 to buy £500 worth of exclusive fashions. “I wanted to know if my choice of designs appealed to other women like me and

kerry hamilton with some of the exclusive fashion

organised a couple of shows to see what the response was.” With the pieces costing between £15 and £50, Kerry was delighted to find that her clothes sold like hot cakes and embarked on her new career in fashion. But there’s more to it than buying and selling clothes. “Lots of busy mums don’t have the time to shop, but they still want to look good. Online shopping is fine, but you don’t get the chance to try on the dress before you buy it. Shopping in the High Street is OK if you have the time, but you are not going to get advice from young sales assistants on whether or not something looks good on you,” she said. “I want women to be seduced by fashion again and to help them fall in love with shopping again - on their terms and with their friends or colleagues.” Kerry now organises two or three shows each week and has to travel to London at least twice a month to keep up with the demand. She is happy to organises shows at a customer’s home or workplace and also hosts events at her own spacious home in Saltash Passage. A typical London’s Calling at Mine show involves the guests arriving to find the exclusive rails covered up or hidden away. Invited friends can model the dresses and guests get the chance to try on as many as they like.

“Women love to be empowered by other women, so trying on pieces with style tips from me and one another makes it a stimulating and exciting shopping experience. Kerry said: “When I visit London I hand pick each piece for the show of the moment. The hostess or organiser always gets first choice from the rail and, to be honest, I never know what I am going to buy at the markets until I get there. “I am also happy to run charity events with part of the proceeds of the sales going to the organiser’s chosen charity. “It’s a fun and exciting way to raise money for a good cause and to buy some super clothes at bargain basement prices.” Kerry has launched her own website and is now keen to develop connections and partnerships with other local artisans, such as jewellery designers and makers of accessories. ‘I could have danced all night Plymouth primary school teacher Jane Dowrick wanted to look her best for her son’s wedding. And being a keen dancer she was also looking forward to stepping out on the dance floor at the reception.

But there was a problem. As Jane explained: “I can’t wear high heels for more than a short time because I suffer from back pain and hip pain caused by one of my legs being slightly longer than the other. To make matters worse I also have a bunion. Determined to make the most of her son’s wedding she decided she would splash out on a new outfit for the day and a cocktail dress for the evening. But she was still unsure what to do about her footwear. “Then I saw an article in the Plymouth Magazine about Foot Solutions and how they help people like me with foot problems. “I decided to visit the store in Royal Parade - and was so glad I did! I spent about an hour with their staff describing my problem and also undergoing a series of tests and scans to monitor my gait.

been more helpful or professional. It was a lovely experience.” Jane knew that on the big day she would be standing for a lot of the time, but the whole experience was an extremely positive one. “I was on my feet wearing my new high heels from midday until well after midnight,” said Jane. And when the band struck up Jane was the first on the dance floor partnering the best man. “I literally could have danced all night,” said Jane. “It was wonderful - thanks to Foot Solutions.”

how an auntie’s advice made all the difference to my My story will be a familiar one with many women who have, or choose to work while raising a family.

She told me: ‘Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and be individual - pale and interesting!’

As a mother of three, and a director at Hyde Park Clinic, I know only too well the ramifications that the ups and downs of everyday life throw at us.

Believe me I am so grateful for those choice words of wisdom. I am now 47 and have dared to ‘bare’ my face to you. I am wearing eye makeup and a slick of lip gloss, but the rest is just me!

The constant demands and daily routines invariably take their toll on our appearance and see us praying that there were often more than 24 hours in a day! A little more ‘you’ time combined with some subtle ‘extra’ help, can really boost your spirits and just make you feel good. This time it’s my story! I can best be described as having a pale complexion with dark hair and a big tendency to burn in the sun. Taking care of my skin is therefore paramount to my ‘Irish Colleen’ look.

by wendy beresfordward director of hyde park clinic

From an early age I remember being so frustrated by the dark sun tans my friends all achieved whilst I either remained pale or turned a temporary red before returning to pale - so frustrating! My auntie gave me some good advice about 25 years ago whilst sat on a beach one hot summer (we did have them once!)

Yes, I’ve had a little Botox to smooth out my parental frown. Why not? Suffice to say Botox became the reason I opened the clinic after my first experience of it appalled me. I was literally herded into a room with some 20 other women, rushed in and out like cattle, and left with the proverbial ball of cotton wool mopping up the dribbles of blood from the injections! I knew there had to be a better way than that. I remember thinking that surely it was meant to be an exciting and enlightening experience trying to look good and enhance your appearance and not fill you with dread? Hopefully that is what has been achieved at Hyde Park Clinic and nobody is made to feel like I did that day. But, in essence, for me a good skincare regime, a combination of high sun

We count ourselves fortunate to have been trained by one of the top framers in the country, who also examines for the Fine Art Guild, of which we are members. “A lady came in the other day with a very old piece of art that her grandmother had painted. It was just lying around, but is now beautifully protected and framed to display. Our motto is, ‘if it doesn’t move we can frame it.’ We frame anything and everything from sports shirts, baby shoes, football boots, medals, christening dresses, programmes, vinyl, tapestries, cross stitch etc and of course, photos and pictures.”

Prints and originals are available to buy, alongside a good collection of greeting cards. The friendly knowledgeable staff are always on hand to give you any background information you should require. If you’d like something framed, no matter what it is, the chances are they can help. Sue told me: “Our business doubles up as a specialist framing company and we use the latest technology to frame just about anything you can imagine. history in at duke of Historical tours of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel have proved so successful that they are to be repeated next year as part of Plymouth’s annual History Festival. Dozens of visitors were given ‘behind the scenes’ tours in May as part of the iconic hotel’s 150th anniversary celebrations with extra tours being arranged because of the demand.

The tours were led by hotel director Walter Combstock, who joined the hotel as an apprentice more than 50 years ago, and Jason Hirons, a walking artist. He provided a narrative journey through the Victorian hotel, while Walter shared memories from his time working at the Duke. Walter said: “It was a very special time and it was great to welcome so many people of all ages to the hotel. Most of those who came along had special memories of the hotel, including a couple who had their wedding here and brought their children along to see the Duke.” The walking tour took in hidden rooms, corridors, passageways and gave the public the chance to explore the building, including a visit to the tower at the top of the hotel, which has been completely refurbished as part of the anniversary celebrations. Walter said that the tour groups were especially pleased to visit the famous tower, with its commanding views across the city and the Sound. “There was a huge amount of interest in the tower and the part it has played in the history of the hotel,” said Walter. The historical theme in May was rounded off with a talk on May 30 by Paul Davies, chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society and author of the book ‘From South Devon to South Pole’ which includes a foreword by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. His talk, entitled ‘Sir Ernest Shackleton: Antarctic explorer and Plymouth visitor’ proved particularly popular. One of the main attractions of the 150th anniversary celebrations is the ‘Tea at the Top’ promotion which includes a two-hour afternoon cream tea in the tower, complete with champagne. The £35 charge per person includes a £5 donation to charity. The unique promotion has caught the eye of the media, with stories about ‘Tea at the Top’ on both BBC Radio Devon and BBC Spotlight. The special promotion is only available four times a week - with just two bookings available on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1pm to 3pm and 4pm to 6pm.

Hotel director Jon Morcom said: “There has been massive interest in ‘Tea at the Top’ and the available slots are being filled up very rapidly. We’re now looking at the opportunity to promote this long-term as part of a package with our stunning Tower Suite.” Funds raised during the 150th anniversary celebrations will be shared between three local charities: Jeremiah’s Journey, St Luke’s Hospice and Plymouth-based Friends and Families of Special Children.

The next big event is on Sunday June 16 when there will be a tea dance between 2pm and 5pm, bringing back memories of days gone by when the Duke’s tea dances were a big part of the social scene in Plymouth. The tea dance will be held in the hotel’s recently refurbished ballroom and will feature the Ken Cotton Duo. There will be entertainment and dancing between 2pm and 4pm with a short break for the band when tea, coffee and biscuits will be served. When the dancing finishes at 4pm hotel staff will serve an afternoon cream tea with tea, coffee, scones, clotted cream and preserves. The cost is £7.50 including a £2.50 donation to charity. Jon said: “We hope that lots of people will come along and enjoy this traditional tea dance - hopefully including some who attended tea dances here in the past.” He added that the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Duke had attracted a great deal of interest and response from customers past and present. “The hotel does have a special place in the life of the city walter combstock (centre) chatting to and many people have fond one of the tour groups memories of times spent at the Duke of Cornwall, particularly weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions. “We have received a lot of historical items, menus, brochures and other material, a lot of which will be included in the commemorative brochure we will be producing later in the year to mark the hotel’s 150th anniversary. “We have also had feedback from lots of customers about their memories of the hotel, including some fascinating stories and anecdotes.” For more information about the tea dance and other events contact 01752 275862 or visit www.thedukeofcornwall.co.uk

thinking about a – some of your questions Hi, my name is Tracey Morris and I am the new cruise specialist at Peter Goord Travel. I have worked in the travel industry for nearly 20 years and have been cruising for many of those years. In fact I will shortly be completing my 15th sailing. I have cruised the Mediterranean, the Aegean, the Caribbean and Alaska. Most of my cruises have been with Princess Cruises, but I have also sailed with P&O and Costa Cruises. My favourite cruise destination is the Caribbean closely followed by Alaska. Are you thinking of taking your first cruise but are finding the minefield of information too much? Then I am here to help. When researching a cruise for the first time, some of the questions you may have are. Where would I like to cruise? Will there be lots of time at sea? What is there to do on board? Where can I sail from? What size ship will suit me? What are the staterooms like? What is included in the price? And how much do I have to tip? Many cruisers today choose to sail from Southampton to avoid the hassle of the airport. Just a three hour drive from Plymouth, Southampton will give you a great choice of cruise destinations, such as the Med, the Baltic, Norwegian Fjords, Canary Islands, Caribbean and full world cruises. Cruises start from two nights up to 112 nights.

The main cruise line that sails from Southampton is P&O. They have seven ships ranging from 710 passengers to 3100 passengers. Three of their ships are adult only, whilst the other four are family friendly. Other cruise lines sailing from Southampton are Princess Cruises, Celebrity, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Fred Olsen, MSC and Silversea. P&O and Cunard offer a very British traditional style of cruising, whilst Princess, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean are a more relaxed American style of cruising.

By Tracey Morris of Peter Goord Travel

MSC are typically Italian in style, whilst Fred Olsen will suit a more mature clientele. Meanwhile, Silversea rate as one of the most luxurious cruise liner in the world. If you are looking to fly and travel further afield, then there are some amazing itineraries available to places such as the Far East, South Pacific, Hawaii, Alaska and Australasia. Stateroom choice is an important part of any cruise. Inside staterooms offer an affordable way to cruise, but remember that you will not have a window or any natural daylight. These are not good if you don’t like enclosed spaces. Ocean View staterooms will give you either a port hole or picture window. There is nothing better than opening your curtains and seeing a new destination everyday. You may want to consider a balcony stateroom. These are ideal for passengers who may like to spend a little more time in their cabin as they offer the extra space. They are also great for sailaways from port as you do not have to fight for viewing space on the upper decks. Stateroom location is also important. For first time cruisers I would always suggest a midship location and on a lower deck. This is generally where you will feel the least amount of movement. The one question that first timer cruisers always ask is ‘what about tipping?’ This has changed a lot in recent years with the majority of cruise lines now adding a daily service charge (gratuity) to your on-board account. These charges are not mandatory and can be removed.

simple recipe for success A popular Plymouth pub has been given a new lease of life after being taken over by an entrepreneurial businessman who has big plans for its future. The Elburton Inn, situated on the busy A379 on the outskirts of Plymouth, has been given a big make-over by new owner Simon Warner, who also runs the awardwinning Rose & Crown gastro-pub at Yealmpton. Simon, 32, first got involved in the catering industry when he was taking a teaching degree in Bristol. “I got a job as a barman in a local pub to help with my student costs and was then made head barman and then assistant manager. “I fully intended to go into teaching, but a close friend invited me to go into business with him running the Oyster Shack at Bigbury. My teaching degree had given me a lot of skills, especially in working with people, which is one of the keys to success in a business like this.” After two years at the Oyster Shack Simon decided he wanted to gain more experience and joined Wykeham Inns as general manager of the Rose & Crown which involved running two restaurants, including its high-profile seafood restaurant. After a successful spell of two years at the Rose & Crown, Simon left the business to work in Dartmouth for a year helping unemployed youngsters to gain skills in the restaurant and catering trade.

popular elburton inn is given a of life by simon and • continued from previous page Enterprise Inns at the end of 2009 to see if he would be prepared to take it over as the leaseholder. “It had been closed for a couple of months, but still had a high profile in the area, so I agreed to take it on,” he said. Simon has overseen the renaissance of the Rose & Crown, which he has reestablished as one of the most popular gastro-pubs in the area. After moving with his partner Naomi to Elburton he started to drop in to the Elburton Inn for an occasional drink. “The Elburton was a great looking pub so I was naturally very keen when I heard it was becoming available,” he said. A few weeks later Simon heard that the Elburton was on the market and reached agreement in January last year with Enterprise Inns to run the pub. By then he had also taken on The King’s general manager ben mcpartlin Arms in Tamerton Foliot, spending a year and tens of thousands of pounds transforming it in to a food-led pub - only for his plans to be destroyed by the devastating floods in November last year.He is now in the process of selling The King’s Arms to concentrate on the Elburton Inn and the Rose & Crown.

He has brought his experience of operating good quality establishments to the Elburton Inn and turned it into a more modern dining pub, while keeping the relaxed pub atmosphere. After the first six months of getting to know the business Simon recruited Dean Conbeer as head chef, one of the youngest in the area to hold such a key role. “Dean was my sous chef at the Rose & Crown so I knew he was capable of pulling my ideas together with the food. Dean was ready for a new challenge and he is doing an excellent job here at the Elburton. He’s a really good guy and chef.” Simon’s recipe for gastro-pub success is to focus on top quality food, locally produced and freshly prepared with an excellent standard of presentation. “Affordability is another vitally important factor in the current economic climate,” added Simon, “so we place a big emphasis on value for money.” Steaks and gourmet burgers figure prominently on the menu and are going head chef dean conbeer down well with the Elburton’s customers. The meat all comes from South Devon farms and is supplied by award-winning butchers Aubrey Allen - who not only supply some of the finest restaurants in the country but also the Royal Household. “Our steaks are particularly popular with our customers,” said Simon. “But that’s

hardly surprising as the Queen gets her steaks from the same butchers.” In the 15 months since re-launching the Elburton Inn, Simon and his 12-strong team have seen the business go from strength to strength. “Early on, we had much to improve on and there is still work to be done, particularly refurbishing the entrance and our loos which will be carried out later this year. We are settled in now and our business is becoming very popular.” The decor and customer offering in the Elburton has been transformed both inside and outside with new furnishings and flooring and a range of special offers design to attract new and former customers. Monday night features a charity quiz night, followed by ‘Bring Your Own Wine’ when dining on Tuesdays. Wednesday is the Burger Club with gourmet burgers and a bottle of wine for two for £20 followed on Thursday by Steak Night offering two steak meals and a bottle of wine, also for £20. succulent steaks

The Elburton Inn is open from 12 noon until 11pm every day of the week, with food served from 12 to 2pm and 6 to 9pm Monday to Saturdays.

Drinkers are always welcome throughout the day where they can enjoy free Wi-Fi and a good selection of daily papers. Recent positive reviews on Trip Advisor have highlighted how customers feel about The Elburton Inn. “Lovely place to eat really excellent menu and service first class service, booking is a must. Atmosphere is relaxed which makes it all the more enjoyable very glad this is my local! Excellent job in updating the place.” “Having eaten out a lot in and around Plymouth, if I’m in the mood for a steak it’s the Elburton Inn every time for me. twin concerts for twinned cities music Jun 2 and Jun 16 Plymouth Jazz Club

It’s a busy summer for musical director Christopher Fletcher, and to get in the right mood he’s conducting the Plymouth Philharmonic Choir with flags instead of his baton as they all prepare to perform both in Plymouth and in Brittany.

This year Plymouth celebrates its 50th anniversary of being twinned with Brest, capital city of Brittany. But Plymouth is not the only place in Devon or Cornwall to have twin towns in Brittany: Wembury is twinned with Locmaria-Plouzané, and Saltash with Plougastel-Daoulas, and in July members of the Philharmonic Choir will cross the English Channel to perform concerts in both these Breton communities. A distinctly French programme of music is planned with beautiful works by Gabriel Fauré: Requiem, Cantique de Jean Racine, and Tantum Ergo.

plymouth symphony orchestra movie nights

Music lovers are promised a great night out at the movies with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s Movie Night Plymouth Guildhall on Wednesday June 19 at 7.30pm. This Movie Night extravaganza features some of the most popular and wellknown movie music, such as James Bond, Titanic, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean and Jurassic Park. These concerts are always one of the most popular of the season. You are guaranteed a thoroughly enjoyable evening and there really is something for everyone! The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra has been central to the musical life of the city for over 137 years and continues to perform challenging music, ranging from the traditional to the contemporary. It is one of the longestestablished orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 137 years. Anne has been connected with the PSO for many years herself, first as a player and subsequently as conductor. As such she has helped to draw performances of real power and vibrancy from the players, enabling it to become the most accomplished group of its kind in the South West. The orchestra aims to achieve a balance between established masterpieces and an adventurous selection of less familiar music, offering varied programmes and also performing with world class soloists. These have included Nigel Kennedy, Peter Donohoe, the late Jack Brymer, Julian Lloyd Webber, Priya Mitchell, Anna Markland, Ralph Kirshbaum, Joanna MacGregor, Noriko Ogawa and, more recently, Craig Ogden and BBC Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pike. The Movies Night concert is also being presented at Sterts Theatre, Liskeard on Sunday June 16 at 5.30pm. For more information about the concerts and where to buy tickets please visit the website www.plymouthsymphony.co.uk.

Billed as a ‘chase’ and very definitely not a ‘race’, the 12th Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit culminates in an evening of supper, entertainment and prize giving which will be hosted by the National Marine Aquarium for the first time. New exhibition at Mount Edgcumbe tells the tale of the Metta Catharina – an ordinary ship with an extraordinary story For many centuries the waters overlooked by Mount Edgcumbe have been used as a site of maritime trade with ships visiting form all over the world and as a home to warships preparing for and returning from battle. They have seen hundreds of maritime events, accidents and disasters, many of which have been documented and celebrated or mourned over the years. Some of these events, however, have faded into obscurity, and will remain so unless research or excavation is undertaken. One such event was the sinking of the Metta Catharina von Flensburg which, until divers from the Nautical Archaeological section of the Plymouth Sub-Aqua Club discovered a ship’s bell in the silt of Plymouth Sound in October 1973, had been forgotten. The discovery offered a unique opportunity to open a time capsule which had lain entombed beneath the seabed of Plymouth Sound since December 1786. For over 30 years divers worked in terrible conditions, risking life and limb excavating the site to bring this story to life. This incredible tale is now being brought to life through an engaging, interactive and family friendly exhibition at Mount Edgcumbe House in Cornwall. A permanent exhibition telling the incredible story of the Metta Catharina and her painstaking excavation opened in Mount Edgcumbe House in May.

the lion king is coming!

Disney’s award-winning production of The Lion King is coming to Plymouth, one of only 10 cities in the UK to host the fabulous show. The truly international production will play for seven weeks at the Theatre Royal from January 31 2014 as part of the show’s record-breaking tour of the UK and Ireland. Tickets go on general sale on Monday June 3 and can be booked via the Theatre Royal Box Office on 01752 267222 or www.theatreroyal.com. It will run until Saturday March 15 but tickets are expected to sell at a phenomenal rate. Four years in the making, The Lion King brings together a cast of over 50 actors, singers and dancers, from 17 different countries, supported by a backstage team of over 100 people. The touring production is the biggest musical production ever to tour the UK. With hundreds of masks, puppets and more than 700 elaborate costumes representing 26 different types of animal, 21 giant trucks are used to transport everything across the country. Fiona Thomas, vice president of live entertainment for the Walt Disney Company said: “We are delighted to be bringing The Lion King to the Theatre Royal. Following our experience of staging Mary Poppins in this magnificent theatre, we look forward to sharing Julie Taymor’s legendary production with audiences in the South West.” The acclaimed stage adaptation of Disney’s 1994 film was first seen on Broadway in 1997, where it recently became the highest grossing show in Broadway history. The production has now been seen by over 68 million people across six continents and the acclaimed West End production continues to sell out at London’s Lyceum Theatre in its 14th triumphant year. To date, this new touring production has enjoyed sell-out, record-breaking seasons in Bristol, Manchester and Dublin. The production continues its sell-out run in Dublin before moving on to Birmingham and Edinburgh. Both audiences and critics have embraced Disney’s The Lion King, giving it rave reviews and standing ovations.

yeovilton all set for its spectacular air day Few events can rival the intensity, drama and spectacle on offer at the International Air Day at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset on Saturday July 13. The award winning show is one of the Southwest’s largest one day events, attracting over 30,000 visitors, and will return this summer with an action-packed day out for all the family. Alongside the thrilling flying display there’s plenty to see and do on the ground – so whether you’re a wide-eyed first timer or a seasoned air show veteran, the experience will be amazing. The breathtaking flying display will feature military and civilian display teams from the UK and abroad, as well as the resident squadrons performing spectacular

role demonstrations such as the famous Commando Assault Finale. The ground displays will showcase modern Royal Navy assets and equipment with interactive displays showing the qualities, skills and professionalism of Royal Navy personnel working as a team to provide Front Line support to Protect our Nation’s Interests. Confirmed participants include world class military aerobatic teams such as the RAF Red Arrows and the Royal Jordanian Falcons. Undoubtedly, the stars of the show for many will be roaring displays by a Swiss Air Force F/A18 Hornet and a Czech Air Force Gripen making their only UK appearances this year. The noise will continue thanks to the return of the Belgian Air Force F16 and RAF Typhoon to Air Day representing the cutting edge of modern global fighter technology. Amongst the helicopter displays will be the Royal Navy and Army’s latest aircraft - the Wildcat, and the return of a real crowd pleaser, the RAF Chinook. On the historic front, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane will be present along with the Royal Navy Historic Flight’s rare collection of naval warbirds. Their Swordfish (LS326) is a veteran of the Battle of the Atlantic, which this year marks the 70th anniversary, and will take part in the flying display in tribute to the courage and bravery of all those who served in the North Atlantic. In what could potentially be her very last display season the iconic Vulcan bomber XH558 will also be firing up her four mighty engines for another majestic performance over the Somerset skies. There will be plenty more aircraft on display in the air and at close quarters on the ground. Throughout the day there will be plenty of family attractions including performances from the Royal Marines Band and the Military Wives Choir Yeovilton, a fairground, vehicle exhibition, service demonstrations, field gun competition, picnic areas, helicopter pleasure flights, simulator rides, trade stands and much, much more.

beating the blues with vibrant, fresh colours Economic worries, unemployment and the miserable weather have all been conspiring to produce depressingly downbeat headlines in recent months. But there is nothing drab about the colours that are dominating the fashion scene this summer, according to Bev Saunders of Plymouth’s Bee Bee Gowns. “There’s no doubt that the dominant fashion theme this summer is centred on fresh colours full of zest and flair,” said Bev. “Colours such as lemon, orange, bright green and pink are all the rage at the moment. “They’re the colours that will be dominating the fashion rails this summer – and they will be on trend not only for all the summer balls and cocktail parties, but also for weddings and bridesmaids.” She said that leading colour house Pantone predicted that the most popular colours in 2013 would include lemon zest, tender shoots green, nectarine, poppy red and violet.

Bev said that Bee Bee

trutex Gowns have an extensive selection of cocktail dresses, ball gowns, proms and bridesmaids dresses in the colours of the moment. “The photos on these pages show my assistant Jaz Boltwood with just two of the beautiful dresses we have available in stock at present. “With summer fast approaching it’s a busy time ahead with lots of balls, proms and weddings. “There are a whole host of charity balls on the calendar in June, July and August and if organisers register with us we will donate a percentage to their charity on dresses that have been purchased here for their event. “We are also well placed to help with themed occasions, whether it’s a wedding or other special event. We can help by adapting dresses with our extensive selection of accessories, including scarves, wraps, bags and jewellery.” Bev pointed out that Bee Bee offer limited edition designer dresses at prices that are frequently cheaper than the High Street. “People often think that because we stock such exclusive designs the price will be out of their reach. But everyone is pleasantly surprised to find that our prices are very affordable. And there’s no danger of turning up at an event to find someone else wearing the same dress,” she added. “We have dresses in stock from size 2 to 28 and all our years of experience can help customers to look and feel like a million dollars on that big occasion.” Bee Bee Gowns is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 6pm. It is located at West Park Shopping Centre in Crownhill Road, with plenty of free parking nearby. For more information call Bev or Jaz on 01752 350305. www.bee-beegowns.co.uk

TARGETED, AFFORDABLE, EFFECTIVE

LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION

to 102,000 homes in Plymouth, Saltash & Ivybridge Since 1985

Any quantity delivered from 5,000 - 102,000

No-one could claim that undiluted business confidence has returned to our shores just yet. But there are signs that the economy is on the up and particularly in Plymouth, and I think there is growing recognition that our environment and circumstances are improving. It feels as if lots of people are trying to move forward in a really positive direction. At a local level I see lots of things to evidence this positivity….renewed vigour in the marketing of our ‘ocean’ city, a large team dedicated to inward investment, the regeneration and development in Devonport (including the wonderful Guildhall and Column), refurbishment at the Theatre Royal, the big plans for the Argyle ground and the Higher Home Park area, an increasing range of businesses opening in the Royal William Yard, people eating out at great food venues opening all over the city – who’d have thought Plymouth would blossom as a foodies’ heaven like that? As with many other towns and cities, the city centre shopping environment is a cause for concern and it would be really good if there was the opportunity for all interested parties to engage in proper debate on what we want to see and what can be delivered as our unique retail offer.

In a bid to boost the lot of independent traders nationally, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has relaunched its Keep Trade Local campaign, recognising that small businesses are at the heart of their communities, generating much of the wealth, employment and opportunities. Did you know that in the UK, 95% of the private sector employs less than 20 staff? We may no longer be a nation of shopkeepers, but we sure have the knowledge to run our businesses. Following the horsemeat scandal, many shoppers chose to head back to their local high street butchers and their return is good news – but the FSB doesn’t want this to be a reactionary fad! It is pushing its campaign to see people using independent business of all kinds on the high street, celebrating the uniqueness of products, the commitment to personal

The FSB is pushing local authorities by lobbying on the three P’s. Parking features of course – FSB research shows that seven out of ten small firms think parking is a CM priority for the future of independent shops. Y

No-one is unrealistic enough to think that local authorities are going to want to lose revenue from their parking coffers, but that wouldn’t stop a more innovative approach to off peak parking in targeted areas.

Second P is for planning – nearly 70% of FSB members said that they have had to wait more than the maximum of eight weeks for local authorities to decide minor planning applications.

Last, but not least, is the issue of procurement – with local authorities spending around £88 billion annually, a tiny increase in spend going to their local SMEs could have a huge impact on local economies. In Plymouth, proactive ways to acknowledge local expert companies and provide clear, concise opportunities for them to tender is underway. And if you are a consumer, what can you do to Keep Trade Local, aside of course from reading the Plymouth Magazine and the Shopper titles? Keep thinking small first, whatever service or product you are buying. It doesn’t automatically follow that biggest is best – or the cheapest. Taking a little time to see who is offering what and whether they can sell to you, will pay off and grow jobs for our city.

ground-breaking a whole new for the elderly A new initiative has been launched in Plymouth aimed at transforming the lives of isolated older people by helping them to get on-line and access services, information and support with day-to-day needs. Plymouth SeniorNet is a partnership project between Routeways, Age UK Plymouth and Plymouth University. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund (Silver Dreams), the project aims to transform the lives of older people in Plymouth by helping them to learn how to use computers and get on-line. The project focuses especially on working at home with less mobile and socially isolated older people aged 65 and above. A team of SeniorNet volunteers, themselves all aged 50 plus, deliver individualised learning programmes to help older people bridge the ‘digital divide’ and go online to access information, entertainment, specialised services and to communicate with family and friends. Beneficiaries are introduced to a range of computer devices – everything from recycled laptops to the latest tablet – and supported in their choice of equipment and means of accessing the internet. Volunteers are CRB checked, work with beneficiaries in their own homes or in other suitable venues, and will be able to detect, and respond appropriately, to additional needs, especially signs of neglect and other difficulties managing the challenges of aging. Plymouth University have been appointed to develop and run an evaluation programme to ensure that the learning from Plymouth SeniorNet is captured and used to develop similar activity elsewhere in the future. One of SeniorNet’s early beneficiaries, Joan (84), was initially a bit apprehensive about the iPad bought for her by her son, but with the support of Plymouth SeniorNet volunteer, Roger, now regularly and confidently goes on-line.

initiative opens up online world in plymouth Joan is starting to discover lots of interesting websites. She’s keeping up with news about the arts world; researching all the houses she’s ever lived in (to see how well current owners are looking after them !) and, has re-kindled contact with a cousin living in the North of England who she hasn’t seen for 20 years and who now regularly keeps her entertained by emailing messages and jokes. Now enthusiastic about her new technology, Joan said: “The internet has created a new dimension to my life, which has given me so much interest. Getting on-line is so easy!” The project is always looking for new volunteers aged 50 and over to help older people ‘bridge the digital divide’ and to go on-line to access information, entertainment, specialised services and to communicate with family and friends. Jo Atkey, project manager, said: “Even if you think you’ve only got the most basic computer skills, you could do something useful for us and the older people we are working with, many of whom are completely new to computers. “With training and support, our volunteers are able to help people through every stage of buying computers and getting connected to the internet. With everything set up, our volunteers help people learn how to use their computers and the internet in ways that reflect their own interests and reasons for getting on-line. “We find our approach really helps build people’s confidence enabling them to use computers and stay on-line.”

stoke damerel college sets the standard in dementia awareness Residents at Waypoints dementia care home have taken part in memory workshops with local students in a pioneering ‘city friendly’ initiative in Plymouth. A special relationship has been forged between Waypoints, as a provider of quality innovative dementia care, and Stoke Damerel Community College which has committed to placing dementia awareness and understanding at the heart of core curriculum learning for its pupils.

Lana Helmore, the Stoke Damerel Community College lead for this work, said: “There is no better way of learning and getting a real understanding of dementiarelated issues for our students than meeting and working alongside people living with this condition. “Some young people have experience of dementia, perhaps with their grandparents, but we hope our visits to Waypoints and other care homes in the city will strengthen wider connections between young and older people in our community.

A Level students from Stoke Damerel have been visiting the specialist Waypoints home in Ernesettle Lane for activity sessions involving arts and crafts to stimulate memories and social interaction for the residents.

“This experience will be useful for the students, whether they go on to have careers in the health care profession or will have someone in their own family living with dementia.”

Waypoints Plymouth is a 64-bedroom home designed specifically for residents with dementia – the condition associated with deterioration of the brain function which can affect memory, language, understanding and judgement.

Sixth former Jasmine, attending a second memory workshop at Waypoints, said: “It’s fun - I find meeting people with dementia in person is much better than reading about it in class.”

Head of Care at Waypoints Plymouth, Susie Theobold, said: “When we heard that Stoke Damerel was applying dementia-related issues to main curriculum subjects we recognised, as a specialist care provider, that this was a mutually beneficial opportunity for our residents to also enjoy the company of young people and the therapy from the memory workshops. “We couldn’t have asked for a more positive response from our residents and the students and we intend to develop this initiative in the future.”

the plymouth magazine

Jasmine, who created a memory board with resident Dominic, said: “I have a better background knowledge about dementia and I think that should make me more patient and understanding when I meet people with dementia.” A Level Health and Social Care student Katherine, who created a memory board with 99-year-old Gwen, said: “Talking and reading about dementia is fine but coming to Waypoints has been a more interesting way to learn. I really enjoy meeting the people living here and there’s a lot of laughter.”

Ian Sherriff, the academic partnership lead for dementia with Plymouth University, said: “There are 21 schools around the country on the Prime Minister’s Dementia Friendly challenge.

It is currently estimated that 3,100 people living in Plymouth have dementia. The South West Dementia Partnership says this could rise to over 4,200 people by 2021.

“Stoke Damerel is the only school taking all core curriculum subjects, like maths, English, science and drama, to explore issues related to dementia. A shining example of this is the inter-generational work happening at Waypoints care home.”

it’s all go: bedding plants, Summer is officially here in terms of the calendar but has the weather arrived yet? We’ve had a few glimpses of what it could or even should be like. We’ve even been able to get out in the garden too. The early May Bank holiday was something of a sigh of relief for gardeners desperate to get their plots tidied up and planted.

perennial is a plant that has comes back year after year. In the winter there will usually very little or no sign that the plant is even there…but come the spring it will pop its head up and put on an amazing display of flowers and foliage. There are herbaceous perennials for all sites in the gardens, some sun lovers, some shade lovers and in general these are the plants that make up the bulk of any cottage garden. Even if you prefer contemporary or modern styles of planting, there will be plants for you in this category. Plants under this heading include aquilegias, poppies, lupins, hollyhocks, penstemons, foxgloves and hardy geraniums. They come in all shapes and sizes, so you can have fantastic displays of great colour and texture all the way through the summer season. There are literally hundreds more that I could name but the best thing to do is to invite you to come and see for yourselves. If you need any help with choosing the best plants for your Blue for You garden, just ask one of us. Our plant of the month for June is going to have to be the rose. With so many colours, shapes and an abundance of scent it’s quite difficult to choose. We try to focus on those varieties that have something special about them, whether it’s in the name, for example Golden Wedding, Special Friend or Ruby Celebration or one with outstanding fragrance or disease resistance such as Blue for You. We carry a wide selection of roses and we all have our favourites. The bulk of our range come from Devon growers and we are just about to introduce some from a Cornish company. We also stock David Austin Roses.

Maria’s favourite rose...Rambling Rector

My absolute favourite is Rambling Rector, a very vigorous white rambler with the most amazing scent. Sadly it took a battering in the winter gales and had to be chopped back hard (not normally something you need to do with ramblers), but it’s on its way back. It only flowers once, usually about the last week in May into June, and it is just breathtaking. Derek’s favourite is another known for its scent - Gertrude Jekyll. This one can be climbing or makes a lax bush. I also have this one in my garden! Falstaff is another favourite of Derek’s, due to its intense deep red colour and Rhapsody in Blue for its electric blue/purple flowers. I know that Fiona has a soft spot for Indian Summer, a beautiful creamy orange colour with great scent. June will be the time to come and search out your Derek’s favourite...Gertrude Jekyll favourites and discover new varieties and we have our Rose Weekend at the beginning of June. The weekend of 1st and 2nd June marks the first of our Garden Festival Events where we focus on a particular aspect of gardening and experts will be on hand to give advice and demonstrations.
