city of culture bid could be the real catalyst for future success By the time you read this we will know whether or not Plymouth has been shortlisted in its bid to become UK City of Culture in 2017. Frustratingly, the short list was due to be announced the day after this issue went to press. It would have been impractical to delay publication as the print and distribution schedules for the magazine have to be maintained. It will be disappointing if Plymouth is not in the final four – but the bookies were rating Plymouth as one of the outsiders just a day before the announcement with Swansea, Chester, Leicester, Hull and Aberdeen (among others) all ahead of our city. Whatever the outcome of the short list, there is much to celebrate in Plymouth’s bid. A huge amount of work went in to preparing the city’s submission and the real positive that came out of the whole exercise was the way in which the private and public sectors along with the university and business leaders worked together to present Plymouth in its most positive light. According to Adrian Vinken, chief executive of the Theatre Royal and chair of the Plymouth Culture Board, the work that has been undertaken in preparing the bid will not be wasted. He told members of the Plymouth Area Business Council at its recent meeting that there was now a much clearer understanding of the city’s amazing cultural assets and its ability to stage and host national and international events. Talking of cultural assets, it’s good to see that the plans for the redevelopment of Home Park have been submitted to Plymouth City Council. My football-mad greentint glasses husband is excited about what it means for Plymouth Argyle – but I’m looking forward to the addition of another multiplex cinema, complete with big screen IMAX – and shops and restaurants in the heart of Central Park. Alongside the magnificent Life Centre it means Plymouth will have some of the best leisure and sporting facilities in the whole of the South West. You can read about the plans on pages 40 to 44.

louise is ideal extra help for claire’s enterprise A franchise business launched locally little more than a year ago is proving so successful that a manager has been recruited to help cope with the growth of the enterprise. Extra Help was originally launched in Milton Keynes by Claire Robinson, who now lives near Saltash, and her friend Sarah Jackson. They first met when Claire was publishing a series of local magazines and Sarah – who ran a cleaning franchise – was one of her regular advertisers. Between them they have well over 40 years’ experience serving the community, including more than 25 years in the care industry and 20 years running their own businesses. Claire said: “A lot of Sarah’s customers were elderly and wanted extra help over and above cleaning. She felt there was the potential for a new business offering not only cleaning, but also home help services such as shopping, ironing, dog walking and basic companionship.” “The idea for Extra Help was born and Sarah asked me if I would like to run the business with her. I felt that a new challenge was just what I needed, so I sold my publishing business and joined forces with Sarah.” The business was launched in October 2010 and Milton Keynes was the first area to be established and is now being successfully run as a franchise.

The opportunity arose for Claire to move to the West Country with her three children and she established the Extra Help franchise in Plymouth and South East Cornwall at the beginning of 2012. A total of 10 franchises are now up and running in various parts of the country including Leicester, Hertfordshire, Essex and Northamptonshire. The local Extra Help business has grown rapidly since it was introduced particularly in Plymouth. With more than 50 clients taking advantage of Extra Help’s services Claire decided she needed to recruit a manager to help oversee the business in Plymouth and South East Cornwall. She met qualified dietician Louise Pen-Collings at a networking meeting when Louise was running her own business. Soon after, the opportunity arose for Louise to become a home help for the company. Claire said: “I needed someone with a caring background and a business brain. Louise fitted the role perfectly. She is now assisting me with admin and also recruiting new clients and home helpers.” Louise, who lives in Plympton, said: “I am really passionate about my work and having run my own business as a dietician I believe I can help Claire to develop Extra Help.” Claire said it was a recession resilient business with low overheads and proven systems and procedures ensuring not only top quality service to clients, but also a viable, profitable business model. “More and more elderly people continue to live independently in their own homes, but need a helping hand. We recognise that they don’t need a full-time or live in carer, but having a little help with tasks such as shopping, gardening and transport to appointments and social events can significantly extend the time that they are able to stay in their own homes.”

Michelle falls for Foot Solutions after a series of tests and gait analysis they confirmed that custom-made insoles would help ease my pain.
When Michelle Ghillyer badly hurt her foot in a fall at her Ernesettle home she suffered months of pain and discomfort - until she visited Foot Solutions in Royal Parade.

Her GP suggested that the pain was due to inflammation of the tendons in her foot. “Because of the pain in my right foot I was putting more pressure on my left foot and that led to pain in my legs and back and was affecting my whole posture,” said Michelle. “I had to take pain killers every day to enable me to carry on my studies as a nail technician at Cornwall College in Saltash.

Realising that the initial care plan was not working her GP
put Michelle on the waiting list for custom made insoles. “I wasn’t sure how long it would take and as I plan to set up my own business after finishing my course at college I decided I needed to take matters into my own hands,” said Michelle.

paula’s all-inclusive dance This month’s Art Matters turns its attention to dance. I caught up with Paula Hocking, the Plymouth based choreographer, community dance practitioner and founder director of Wheelfever Projects. This local gem is also the national co-ordinator for the Christian Dance Fellowship of Britain. She has been invited to teach and perform at the International Christian Dance Conference this summer in Puerto Rico. Paula recently attained an MA in Choreography at Dartington College of Art where she researched inclusive practice. This served to enhance her passion for providing an equal opportunity to young people who often feel excluded from mainstream dance. She had already set up Wheelfever, which started in 2007, in response to a need expressed by parents of disabled children. Paula said: “Parents were coming to me sharing that they were uncomfortable and sad about their children thinking dance was something they were not able to take part in. “So I organised a day event which
put on workshops for young wheelchair users. There was an enthusiastic response from the young people, their families, carers and friends, and as they showed an interest in participating in regular dance activities Wheelfever Projects was set up. “We began by running monthly workshops, which included siblings, friends and family members with the aim of providing opportunities for disabled and nondisabled children and young people to explore dance together. “We also started holiday dance clubs to encourage independence and give short breaks for families. Soon after our work began, some of the young people worked on performance skills and were involved in local performance events. “Although the project started off by introducing physically disabled young people to dance, things have expanded and we now employ dance support workers so others with additional needs can get involved. We have young people with learning difficulties and autism, as well as children who are in care, attending our sessions. We are all different and enjoy creating dance in our unique non-competitive environment.” Paula added: “We would like to keep
project the consistent provision so that disabled young people have the same opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being in a dance group that their peers are offered; that sense of belonging and being part of the wider dance community. We have participated in School Tour. “We were part of the Olympic Torch opening ceremony and we performed at the Paralympics opening in Plymouth as well as presenting on other community dance platforms. “Our methods of practice cultivate transferable skills - we encourage confidence in children to share their ideas and so they learn that their creative ideas and opinions are a valid contribution to the devising process - we hope that this influences their approach to life.

hotel chefs kept busy 150th anniversary Chefs and kitchen staff at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel prepare thousands of dishes each year for diners in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. In 2013 their work has increased significantly as the hotel celebrates its 150th anniversary. Head chef Darren Kester and his team have not only been catering for special anniversary events, but are now adding a signature dish to the restaurant’s a la carte menu reflecting different eras from the hotel’s history.

Alongside our a la carte menu we offer a table d’hote choice offering a starter and main course for just £15,” he added. “We hope that many new customers will come and share in our anniversary celebrations by dining with us in the restaurant.” One of the main attractions of the 150th anniversary celebrations is the ‘Tea at the Top’ promotion which includes a two-hour afternoon cream tea in the hotel’s famous viewing tower, complete with champagne. The £35 charge per person includes a £5 donation to charity. The unique promotion will continue until the end of September – but has proved so successful that it will be available next year as well between May and September.
Not surprisingly, the first dish celebrates the Victorian era during which the hotel was built. The dish – Roti de Poussin Crapaudine – appeared on a Royal Menu in November 1899 when Queen Victoria entertained the German Emperor at Windsor Castle.
Hotel director Jon Morcom said: “Tea at the Top is already fully booked until the end of August with just a few places left in September. It has been so popular that we decided it would become an annual promotion and will also be available as an additional option for guests who stay in our luxury Tower Suite, located under the tower.”
Translated into modern day English the dish is roast spatchcock chicken with chipolata, rosemary jus and chateau potatoes. It will be on the AA Rosette restaurant’s menu during the whole of July with a new signature dish added each month until the end of the year. The beautifully appointed restaurant, which also boasts two RAC Blue Ribbons, may be formal in style reflecting its Victorian heritage, but it is certainly not stuffy. Each table offers a relaxed, elegant way to enjoy some of the best food Plymouth has to offer.
Funds raised during the 150th anniversary celebrations will be shared between three local charities: Jeremiah’s Journey, St Luke’s Hospice and Plymouth-based Friends and Families of Special Children. Nicholas Reed preparing

A tea dance was held in June bringing back memories of days gone by when the Duke’s tea dances were a big part of the social scene in Plymouth. Other events have included ‘behind the scenes’ tours of the hotel and a talk by Paul Davies, chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society and author of the book ‘From South Devon to South Pole’ which includes a foreword by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. His talk, entitled ‘Sir Ernest Shackleton: Antarctic explorer and Plymouth visitor’ proved particularly popular. Jon said: “The Big Band sound remains as popular as ever and we hope the event on August 24 will prove a big hit with local people – and money raised will help three very worthwhile local causes. appeal for help disabled A charity providing vital therapy and support for people with a variety of disabilities is appealing for more volunteers to help with its work. Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled Group is a unique equestrian facility based at Bittaford near Ivybridge, which aims to give disabled people of all ages the chance to both enjoy the sheer exhilaration and therapeutic benefits of horse riding in a safe and structured environment. The group was established 30 years ago by Peggy Douglas, who was recognised for her work with the disabled with an MBE in 2011. She was also honoured by carrying the Olympic Torch through the village of Brixton last year. It is a totally voluntary not-for-profit organisation relying entirely on donations and support from the local community, and currently giving over 4,000 rides each year to up to 120 disabled people, young and old alike. Riders spend 30 minute or hour-long sessions, usually on a weekly basis. They come from all over the South Hams and further afield. Scores of volunteer helpers assist with rides and lessons, sometimes three to each disabled rider, as well as helping to run the centre. Peggy is also supported by a team of instructors and a board of trustees, who work with the charity in a variety of roles, including fund raising and administration. Originally Peggy Douglas (right) pictured with volunteers, operating from riders and horses at The Brook a commercial stables, Erme Valley moved to The Brook 11 years ago and after a major fund raising campaign now boasts a purpose-built indoor riding school, stable block, toilets, parking and access to fields and lanes for riding out. It is a member of the National Riding for the Disabled Association and not only provides opportunities for riding, but also dressage and show jumping. The charity has a total of 10 horses involved in its work. Former PE teacher Peggy, who has a disabled son, said: “It all started in 1983 with three parents, two children and two ponies. Our move to The Brook in 2002 gave us three fields, a barn and outdoor riding school. Our Raising the Roof campaign brought in £120,000 which enabled us to create the indoor riding school, stables and other facilities. “What we try to do at Erme Valley is to build people’s confidence and to help them broaden themselves. It’s a holistic experience. Riding offers a new visual perspective of the world, while encouraging independence and self confidence. “Many of our clients are unable to take part in traditional recreational and sporting activities. Riding offers an opportunity to succeed at a unique activity while receiving educational and therapeutic benefits.

She said that Erme Valley was always looking for more volunteers who were willing to spend just a few hours each week working with the disabled, most of whom need up to three helpers during their sessions at The Brook. “Ideally, volunteers should be able to commit to providing help on a regular basis as this enables us to ensure we can provide the right level of support for all our riders. They need to be comfortable in an equestrian setting and have good communication skills. They will also need to have their own transport as The Brook is not easily accessible by public transport.� The Dartmoor Pony Club is also based at Erme Valley and Peggy instructs and helps to run the summer camp. Peggy said she is as passionate now about the Erme Valley Riding for Disabled Ltd as she was when it first began. restaurateur chris launches a mexican wave of enthusiasm Plymouth’s restaurant sector has never been more competitive with a growing number of outlets opened by national chains and celebrity chefs.

It all represents a big challenge for the city’s independent operators – but at least one Barbican-based restaurateur is determined to take the fight to the big boys. Chris Christophi runs Arribas Restaurant and Havana Bar, the city’s first and only independent Mexican restaurant, and he is adopting a range of marketing techniques to ensure that his Notte Street eatery remains competitive. Launched nearly 10 years ago Arribas has always been a popular venue for diners but Chris recognises that increased competition requires a determined response. “There are over 300 restaurants in Plymouth now, including one or two new Mexican outlets, but we believe we have something special. We offer excellent food, a vibrant atmosphere and a warm family-friendly welcome,” said Chris. Since becoming the sole owner of the business six months ago he has refreshed the menu, introduced new dishes and re-launched The Havana Bar, which is situated on the first floor above the colourful 80-seat restaurant. He has also introduced a range of special promotional offers designed to attract more customers to the restaurant between Sundays and Thursdays. Customers can download vouchers from the Arribas website to take advantage of offers such as a free bottles of house wine or free jugs of cocktails and sangria. “We’re also using customer feedback to create a new database which will enable us to e-mail special offers and promotions to customers,” he added. “We’re promoting The Havana Bar as a great place to enjoy a relaxing drink before or after dinner or visit to the theatre. It’s open from 6pm to late on Fridays and Arribas owner Chris Christophi preparing one of Saturdays and is the many cocktails available also a great place for special parties or functions. We can accommodate up to 100 people and offer a choice of Greek, Mexican and vegetarian buffets for private parties.” He said that people often believe that all Mexican food is either hot or spicy. “Nothing could be further from the truth. Our authentic Mexican dishes can be prepared to suit all tastes. So, whether you like your food hot and spicy or prefer mild and tasty we can prepare dishes to suit every taste.” Starters feature a selection of dishes ideal for sharing, including a Mexican combo with ribs, wings, jalapeno poppers, potato skins with chilli and onion rings, a Greek combo with meatballs, vine leaves, calamari, grilled halloumi, taramasalata, tzatziki and pitta bread.

Also on the menu for starts are nachos, chicken or beef tacos, stuffed vine leaves and traditional choices such as soup of the day, mussels and prawn cocktail. Mexican main dish favourites including enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, chimichanga alongside wraps, steaks, home made burgers, pizzas, pastas, seafood dishes and salads. Specialities include Havana chicken royal (pan fried chicken breast stuffed with sundried tomatoes, basil, ham & cheese, served on a tomato based sauce with fresh vegetables and sautéed potatoes); pancho pork (pork loin fillet stuffed with mushrooms, cheese, fresh red and green bell peppers, lightly pan fried and finished in the oven, served with crushed potatoes and fresh broccoli on a base of honey and mustard sauce). The restaurant’s signature dish is beef steak chilli – made to Arribas own traditional recipe. Other favourites include banditos lamb shank (seasoned with garlic, herbs and a touch of Guinness, slowly cooked in its own juices, served with crushed new potatoes and Mexican bean sauce) and Mexican omelette with chorizo sausage, red peppers, spring onions, potato and cheese and served with homemade chips and salad. Diners can also choose from a wide selection of vegetarian dishes and there is also a special children’s menu. To complement the diverse menu Arribas has an extensive selection of wines, beers and champagnes, as well as a full cocktail menu, including pitchers of sangria and ice cold margaritas. Chris and his eight-strong team look forward to welcoming customers old and new to Arribas, which is situated in a prime location on Plymouth’s historic Baribcan. seafood supremo mitch tonks on why he’s casting his net in plymouth Award winning food writer, restaurateur and fishmonger, Mitch Tonks can only be described as a seafood champion, recognised as one of the leading seafood chefs and restaurateurs in the UK.
Why Plymouth? I have always liked the Plymouth waterfront since sailing here a number of years ago. It has some of the best fish in the country here and I think it is a vibrant city with plenty going on.
Mitch has four restaurants, the newest of which RockFish Seafood opened at Sutton Harbour in the shadows of the National Marine Aquarium on June 28. His other restaurants are in Bristol and Dartmouth, where he operates they Seahorse Restaurant and RockFish Seafood.
Why another RockFish? RockFish in Dartmouth has been a huge success, guests really enjoy it and I’m always being asked to open more. I guess I just liked the location in Plymouth so much I thought why not! Opening RockFish in Plymouth feels like such an obvious thing to do.
He is UK Ambassador for Norwegian Seafood, a consultant for Young’s Seafood, has written five books, appeared on numerous TV shows and has opened the Mitch Tonks Seafood Academy at South Devon College. Here he talks to the Plymouth Magazine on the eve of the opening of Plymouth’s newest eatery.

We hear that there is a new breakfast service coming up on the First Great Western Pullman train from Plymouth, is that something you’ve been working on? I haven’t had that much to do with it except to make sure we get a kipper on the menu. The breakfast train is an institution and I guess due to the recent success of the food on the Pullman it has inspired the return of the breakfast train I heartily recommend it, the Pullman team are fantastic. Will you be in the new restaurant cooking yourself? I will most certainly be there regularly, I like to enjoy my restaurants and look after the detail! Tell us what’s on the menu Fried oysters, soft shell crab rolls, great fish and chips, roasted scallops, cured herring, cracked crab, lobster and lots more. There is a crab day in Dartmouth on August 4, do you plan to run similar events in Plymouth? I would love the area around the fish market and Sutton Harbour to become a national destination along Britain’s seafood coast (which is what I call the South West!). I’ll be doing doing a crab cracking demo as part of the seafood festival on Saturday September 21 in Plymouth too so that is a date for the diary of any seafood lover! barbican theatre launches new dance and theatre performance training programme for young people Plymouth’s Barbican Theatre is launching an exciting new programme of dance and theatre performance training in September. The programme is designed to inspire young people aged from eight to 25 who are interested in developing their skills in dance or theatre or who want to try something new and meet like-minded and friendly people. No experience is required and all styles are welcome. Youngsters aged between eight and 11 years old can join Barbican Theatre’s Dance or Theatre Moves sessions. Have fun exploring a variety of theatre disciplines or learn some new dance moves, develop confidence and make new friends. Taster sessions are running on Monday September 16: Dance Moves is from 5pm to 6.15pm and Theatre Moves is from 6.15pm- 7.30pm. Those aged from 12 to 15 years old can go along and get creative making original performances, train in a professional theatre and get advice from leading industry practitioners. Taster sessions are running on Thursday September 19: Dance Junction is from 5pm to 6.30pm and Theatre Junction is from 6.30pm to 8pm. For 14-25 year olds, there is the opportunity to audition to be part of Company B Dance or Theatre, an exciting new performance training company at the Barbican Theatre made up of the most talented young dancers and actors in the city. Productions twice a year give youngsters the chance to develop skills which can help them go onto bigger things – students from the Barbican Theatre’s training companies have successfully gained places at some of the best dance and drama higher education schools in the UK. New for 2013, the Barbican Theatre is offering 15-25 year olds a chance to gain teaching, technical and arts management training skills with accreditation and mentoring. In Dance and Theatre Force (Tues/Wed 5pm to 6pm), learn how to teach dance/theatre workshops and then lead your own workshops. In Tech Force (Mon 7pm to 9pm), learn a range of technical skills and out them into practice. In Arts Force (Wed 5pm to 6pm), learn how to campaign for the arts you want to see and help make event happen. The Barbican Theatre provides opportunities for young people to develop their skills in order to excel and expand their horizons. Importance of asset protection ‘Protecting your assets’ was the subject of a talk given by David Richardson of Richardson Legal Services at a breakfast meeting organised by Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Trade. The meeting was attended by owners and directors of small to medium sized businesses in the city and David gave them helpful advice and guidance on how to ensure they can protect their most valuable assets - particularly property and savings. David said: “A lot of people think that a simple will is sufficient to protect their assets and ensure that they end up with the right inheritance. “However the reality is that some simple wills don’t work and assets end up with the wrong people by having a will that does not take account of changed circumstances over the years.” He gave examples – such as a marriage breakdown where one of the partners then re-marries – which can result in the assets not reaching the intended beneficiaries. He highlighted the benefits of putting property and savings into Trust, to protect

The right type of trusts can also reduce inheritance tax and in some cases remove it altogether. He said that Home Protection Wills and Trusts enabled property and other assets to be protected for the benefit of the eventual beneficiaries. A wide variety of Trusts are also available to suit specific situations, including Discretionary Trusts, Discounted Gift Trusts and Life Interest Trusts.

In the space of a few years, we’ve built up a great following with the public and we’ve caught the eye and ear of established organisations such as Ecover, MCS and national sports bodies. “I’d like to think that in the next 10 years we can do for the blue environment what Red Nose Day has done for communities in Africa.” Plymouth’s Olympic silver medalist and Commonwealth double gold medal winner, Sharron Davies, has given her backing to the event. Sharron, who is a patron of the Marine Conservation Society, hopes it will raise awareness about the marine environment and encourage more people to take up water sports. “This is a fantastic way to get people into the blue environment whilst raising money for the Marine Conservation Society,” she said. Plymouth Argyle supporters are being urged to show their support for the £50 million plan to transform Higher Home Park. Proposals for the regeneration of Home Park, including a new grandstand for Plymouth Argyle, are now with city planners for consideration after receiving strong support during a major consultation in the city. Three quarters of people (74 per cent) supported the proposals after they went on show online and at a three-day public exhibition in the city centre. Almost 80 per cent of those in favour said their main reason for backing the plans was because they would be good for the city and for Plymouth Argyle, with nine per cent citing the inclusion of new ice facilities as their top reason for support. But with the Friends of Central Park opposing the plans and some Argyle fans claiming that the plans demonstrate a lack of ambition for the club, people who support the development are being urged to make their views known. Argyle supporters who are in favour of the development are encouraged to send an to e-mail planningconsents@plymouth.gov.uk using reference number 13/00942/ful. Plymouth Argyle owner James Brent, whose Akkeron Group have submitted the plans, has rejected suggestions that the development lacks ambition citing the fact that the new grandstand will have a capacity of 4,800 people – 1,000 more than the requirement stipulated by Plymouth City Council.

It is hoped that work will start on the site at the end of September this year, with the new grandstand completed in December 2014 and the remainder of the project finished by 2015. James Brent said: “We have been very encouraged by the level of interest, support and constructive feedback received from local people about our proposals. “The views and suggestions we have received from the community have influenced and shaped key aspects of our proposals including the Home Park grandstand, improvements to Central Park, parking facilities and what the competition ice skaters in the city would like from their new arena. “We believe this plan will reinvigorate Higher Home Park and greatly improve the offer for local people and visitors of all ages with a range of indoor and outdoor sporting, leisure and social activities. We have also designed with Plymouth City Council and local interest groups, including the Friends of Central Park, a significant package of enhancements for the park environment and public amenities. “Once open, Plymothians will have facilities unrivalled in the South West right on their doorstep and Higher Home Park will become a source of significant employment and a destination for visitors who will also spend their money elsewhere in the city.” Roger Harris, chief operating officer of Odeon said that they had been keen to find the right development opportunity in Plymouth, having operated cinemas in the city in the past. He said: “I know Plymouth well as I went to Sutton High School for seven years. I always felt a site with easy access from the A38 was essential and Home Park fits the bill perfectly. “We believe this new development will not only benefit the people of Plymouth, but will also be a destination for day visitors and tourists. There will be significant benefits for the local economy. It will be one of the region’s leading leisure and sporting attractions.” He said that the new cinema was scheduled to open in the summer of 2015 and would employ around 80 full and part-time staff. Business leaders have also welcomed the development. Charles Howeson, chairman of the Plymouth Area Business Council, recently wrote to Plymouth City Council formally backing the scheme on behalf of 250 of the city’s business leaders. Charles said: “Such inward investment in the city – and signalled as it is being at the present time – cannot be other than hugely welcome. For the pistou: 3 cloves garlic 1 tsp sea salt 50g basil leaves 50g parmesan, grated (optional) 150ml olive oil 200g podded weight broad beans 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 200g new potatoes, scrubbed & diced 2 carrots, sliced 8 cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters 1.5 ltr veg stock 250g asparagus, cut into 3cm lengths 200g cooked, rinsed white beans To make the pistou, pound the garlic and salt in a pestle and mortar. Pound in the basil (you may need some oil to loosen it), then the cheese and oil. Or you can blitz everything in a processor. Boil the broad beans for 3 mins, drain, refresh in cold water, drain again and remove the outer skins. Keep to one side. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onion slowly for 8 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add the potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and stock. Simmer for 10 mins. Add the broad beans, asparagus and white beans. Simmer for 3 mins. Season and serve with the pistou to swirl through.

Food lovers flocked to the Moorland Garden Hotel to enjoy a free day of cookery demonstrations and industry know-how from some of the region’s top producers on Friday June 7. The inspiration of the hotel’s new head chef, Bruce Cole, the West Country Producers’ Day was designed as a celebration of ‘paddock to plate’ cuisine, an opportunity for diners to meet and chat to the people behind the ingredients appearing on the hotel’s new menu. Demonstrations included a session on beef butchery with Dartmoor Farmers Limited and fish cookery with S&J Fishery and Bell & Loxton rapeseed oil. Bruce also shared cheeseboard tips and tasters courtesy of goodies from Quickes West Country Cheeses along with Moorland Garden Hotel homebaked bread, with delicious sweet treats provided by Owens Coffee and Honey’s Bakery.

a serious question of will power Families rarely discuss what will happen to their property and possessions when they die. There is often the assumption of an inheritance which can lead to bitter disappointment and resentment. However there is no legal duty in the UK to provide for family and heirs. We enjoy testamentary freedom to do with our possessions as we wish. We can choose to follow a moral duty to provide for our family or leave all our possessions to provide for a cherished pet or to help a charitable cause close to our hearts. In fact the law has recently made it more advantageous to leave money to charity than to relatives. There is an increasingly narcissistic view in our younger society of aspiration and entitlement. The need for material wealth has lead to consumerism and a buy now pay later approach. This approach is often disappointing and distasteful to the older generation, who have scrimped and saved for decades to provide for their futures. The stark reality is that fewer people save for their futures and the double dip recession has lead to financial crisis and crippling debt. An increasing number of young people rely on receiving a substantial nest egg from close relatives when they die which can lead to bitter disappointment if the windfall does not materialise.

And yet times have been tough for everyone and it is estimated that up to half of parents aged 50 or above have already had to spend a significant chunk of their savings to see them through the financial crisis. Our retirees are avid consumers, computer literate and financially savvy. They are enjoying the fruits of their labour and using their hard earned savings to kick off their heels and to feather their own nests. why family life is such a big balancing act We are a family of five and this is our average week Monday: choir, cricket and after-school club. Tuesday: mosaic club and sailing club. Wednesday: after-school club followed by football in the evening. Thursday is homework. Friday: KidzKlub and youth. Saturday off and then church on Sunday. Phew!

This is before we add in parties, having friends and family around and anything the adults might like to do! It’s tiring just thinking about it all, let alone actually doing it! Life has become a bit of a juggling act.
considering the why. The saying goes: ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail’. How important that is in our role as parents. We must stop and take time to consider what we want to teach our children about themselves and life and why we spend our time as we do.
I’m sure life wasn’t this busy when I was a child. Perhaps it’s just part of getting older, of being the parent and not the child, but it feels like life is in fast forward. My husband and I both work full-time and the children seem so busy with their activities. Why are we so busy and how do we put the brakes on?
The story is told of the stones in the jar. It goes like this. A jar is set in front of a group of students and filled with stones. The lecturer asks if it is full. ‘Yes,’ they say. ‘Really?’ he answers. He picks up some gravel, puts it in the jar, shakes it, and the gravel makes its way through the stones to settle in the jar.
Leading American broadcaster Josh Levs, speaking on the subject of ‘overscheduled kids, anxious parents’ on CNN in America earlier this year, suggests that we are making childhood too stressful.
He asks them again if it is full. ‘Yes‚‘ they say. So he picks up some sand, puts it in the jar and shakes it until the sand filters through the stones and gravel. ‘Now is it full?’ he asks. ‘Yes!’ they reply. Then he pours water in.
He questions if we’ve forgotten what childhood should and could be like. He said: “I couldn’t care less whether they can run an eight-minute mile, play the violin, or set up a tent. I care that they know they can achieve anything, that they understand big rewards come from perseverance and hard work, that they treat others as they’d want to be treated.
The point of the story is that if you put the sand and gravel in first you’ll never get the big stones in. If the jar represents our life what are the big stones? They are our priorities, what we want to teach our children and what memories we want to create.
“I care that they fill their lives with positivity, love and friendship, and take time for those things. I realized I had gotten caught up in the means, not the end.” Levs is saying that sometimes we can get too involved in the what, without

Teaching them to treat others as they want to be treated, to persevere, to work hard, to love others and be loved, the value of friendship and faith. Big stones for us look like family holidays and celebrations, time with friends and time for hobbies. Gordon MacDonald (Ordering your Private World. Nelson, 2003) talks about our soul being like a garden that needs tending. Like any garden the gardener needs to
remove the weeds that have grown and give space to plants that he wants to grow. He suggests we regularly look at what has appeared in our life over the course of a year. What are we doing that we don’t want to be, what weeds have grown? To go back to the jar analogy, we need to make sure that we are not filling our jar up with sand and gravel first. A club too many, working too many hours, too much screen time? And then we need to put the big stones in the jar, for if we don’t put the important things in the diary first, you can be sure that, in the busy-ness of life, they won’t just happen.

busy month with abbotsbury Roses again feature as one of the stars of the garden this month.

As I write, they are just beginning to break bud. Every so often you get a waft of the delicious scent of Gertude Jeckyll. This is one of the David Austin Roses that I mentioned last month. I also spoke about the Rambling Rector (the rose, not a local vicar!) in my garden that had taken a bashing in the winter. I didn’t expect to get anything from this one this year after its battering, but I am happy to report that it is now covered in tight buds.

This one also looks great growing through trees and requires very little attention. Eglantyne is another great performer and mine is starting to flower and there are loads more buds coming. Well worth a space in the garden. As I said, the roses are just waiting to burst into glorious colour. We received plants from our new Cornish supplier and among the highlights are Proper Job (well they are Cornish!) which has a beautiful deep red bloom with excellent scent. The collection includes Sweet Child of Mine which is named in memory of the young people who lost their lives in a flash flood at Zennor in 2009. Royalties from this rose go to the Coastguard Association. So what else can we expect to look forward to in July? Dahlias make a great splash of colour. They come in all shapes and sizes and are pretty easy to grow. The things you need to watch out for are slugs and support. Don’t let this put you off, as both can be dealt with very easily. We have a range of products that will keep slugs at bay. There are always the tradional blue pellets, but if you prefer to garden organically, we have a product called Slug Gone. It is a pelleted product made from sheep’s wool but slugs won’t go over it as the wool dries up their foot. If you want to try dahlias in pots there is also the copper tape that you put around the pot. Slugs won’t go over this as they get an electric shock.
For support, there are a number of products designed to keep your plants upright. The type of support depends on the eventual size of dahlia. It is important to stake them early and it’s also much easier. You can always ask any of us for help to make sure you get the right sort of support. Dahlias make great cut flowers and the more you cut, the more they flower. At the end of the season when the frosts return you can lift the tubers and store them dry until next year. During the spring and summer we run coach trips from the Garden Centre to various destinations in the south west (details can be found in store). In May I went on the trip to Abbotsbury in Dorset. First we visited the Swannery and saw the swans being fed. The swans were so calm. Their nests were alongside the paths and many of them had cygnets. There were signs up warning of possible aggression, but I saw none of it even when some noisy children came tearing past. There were lots of little fluffy young swans in the rearing ponds - so cute! One of the Abbotsbury swans with The highlight of the day for me was the visit to the Sub Tropical Garden at a young cygnet Abbotsbury. It rained pretty much all day and as I walked in I was a little disappointed by the first area of planting - not much going on yet but there were signs of things to come. In fact it looked like they had just finished doing some planting and gap filling.
Anyway, I found a map and got my bearings and off I plodded along one of the paths. As I got further along, I felt I was wandering along in a lost world. It was so peaceful and the planting was divine.

Lots of plants that should have finished were flowering their socks off. Evergreen rhododendrons and azaleas were in full flower along with Azalea mollis. Lots of fresh new growth on the ferns and Gunnera Mannicata taller than me, it was definitely a garden to get lost in. As I rose from

Cornus Controversa - the Wedding Cake tree
the more lush plantings of Japan, the jungle and the Himalayas the atmosphere changed and I discovered one of my all time favourites - Cornus Controversa Variegata - the Wedding Cake Tree. It’s a medium to large tree so not suitable for all gardens, but if you have the space it’s well worth it. The restaurant was lovely and very much in keeping with the feel of the planting. I will certainly be making a return trip to this garden, it has so much to offer all year round. At the end of May we went along with our stand and our plants to Tavistock Garden Festival. We got sunburnt on the Sunday and soaked on the Monday - well it was a Bank Holiday! We met lots of old friends and made plenty of new ones. We also had the opportunity to work with Christine Walkden from BBC’s The One Show and Gardeners’ Question Time. We supplied the goods and she did the demonstrations in her ‘no nonsense’ way. It was a pleasure to meet her and she is a great ambassador for the horticultural trade. She said some very nice things about us and was impressed at the price and quality of our plants.

So what else to do in July? If you have hedges, by now you will see how full they are and if you need to fill any gaps. We have plenty of containerised hedging plants in stock both evergreen and deciduous, all of which can be planted at any time. Conifers can be trimmed now but take care not to cut into the old wood as they will not re-grow from that area. The exception to this is Taxus Bacchata (Yew). Cutting back hard into a yew hedge will regenerate it. Escallonia is looking good now. It’s a great hedging plant that stays evergreen, has small scented flowers and is good for wildlife. It stands up well to extreme coastal weather conditions. Do you record how your garden is looking now? It is useful to take pictures of your garden throughout the year so that you have a record of which plants are there.
