spectacular events will get the city buzzing in august

August is always a fantastic month in Plymouth. As I write this column we are in the second week of an incredible heatwave, which hopefully will continue for a few more weeks to come – especially as the children are now at home for the summer holidays. There is a mouth-watering menu of fantastic events in August, with the highlights inevitably being the British Firework Championships on August 13 and 14 followed a few days later by the 10th annual Flavour Fest, which promises to be bigger and better than ever. These two events could well attract up to 250,000 people, highlighting the city’s ability to host big regional and national events. We have a special feature on the Flavour Fest in this issue, starting on page 27. There’s a brilliant line-up of chefs who will be demonstrating their culinary skills in the Flavour Fest kitchen. It’s just been confirmed that three more top chefs - Mitch Tonks, Masterchef Professional 2012 Anton Piotrowski and celebrity chef Michael Caines. They will join an already impressive line-up of chefs which inevitably includes the talented Tanner Brothers, Peter Gorton, Jacques Marchal and my favourite chef Dave Jenkins of the wonderful Rock Salt Café in Stonehouse. Flavour Fest is the South West’s largest food and drink festival, so get down to the Piazza and enjoy the atmosphere, entertainment and food and drink. Other highlights in August include the Mega-Ride on August 11 when literally thousands of motor cyclists will ride from Lee Mill to the Hoe. It’s not only a great spectacle, but also raises tens of thousands of pounds for good causes. There will be plenty of action in Plymouth Sound as well in August with the return of the huge fleet of yachts competing in the Rolex Fastnet Race, while 20 international teams from nine countries will be competing in Class 40 World Championships between August 17 and 20. There’s certainly no need to look any further than this wonderful city of ours for such an incredible range of free events over the next month or so.

lizzy’s business venture is right on the button! Plymouth entrepreneur Lizzy Evans certainly knows how to press the button of business success. Lizzy launched Funky Poppy – a shop for button lovers in Plymouth’s Barbican – three years ago and has never looked back, despite the difficult economic environment. Since launching the business Lizzy has created an online shop, introduced a growing range of button-based products, gifts and jewellery, set up jewellery workshops – and now wants to open a second shop. Lizzy was born and brought up in Higher Compton and completed her education in Plymouth. After leaving school she initially went into restaurant management after a spell as a holiday rep. Aged 26 she decided to follow her sister and work in New Zealand. She spent three years working for a sky diving company, but then decided to return to her hometown of Plymouth. Lizzy said: “Not having any luck with my job search, what with the economic climate as it was I started to look into things I loved - buttons! Growing up I was always fascinated with buttons, their shapes, colours and feel. “At the time I didn’t have the cash to buy new clothing so I changed all the buttons I had on all my cardigans to funk them all up a bit. I received lots of compliments on my new and improved old clothing, which gave me the idea of opening a button shop.

Lizzy Evans (right) with customer Claire Doyle

“Buttons are such diverse little things, you can do so much with buttons. So the idea was formed. “Plymouth didn’t really have anywhere you could go to buy really cool buttons or unique buttons so I took the challenge upon myself. I found a little shop in the House That Jack Built on The Barbican and thought it would be perfect. “The only problem was, in order to secure the unit: I had just three weeks to source all my buttons and button-based stock and open for business! “It was quite a challenge to follow my brief of unusual buttons; I sourced buttons from all over the world – from just down the road in Cornwall, to South Africa, Singapore and Germany. With just enough to go on, I moved into the shop on August 1 2010 and was open for business the next day.

A unique gallery, selling jewellery, glass, ceramics and other gift items; all hand made in the UK; all exclusive to Plymouth and now available to buy online at www.nicolahurst.co.uk

“The House That Jack Built is a great little arcade of small individual shops on Plymouth’s historic Barbican area. With jewellers and artists it had a great feel and I knew I would fit in perfectly. The Barbican is a great location for me as not only is it accessible for locals but attracts lots of tourists in the summer.”

Lizzy started with a small unit, but then a larger shop facing on to Southside Street became available and she quickly snapped it up. As the years have gone by she has developed the shop and introduced many new items from different types of button jewellery and accessories to the eye-catching (and increasingly popular) Funky Poppy button T-shirts. Funky Button shopping bags and aprons are also appealing to customers. Lizzy offers bespoke jewellery, including cuff links, as well. Lizzy, 32, has also just launched a range of personalised buttons, taking the opportunity to send a ‘Daddy William’ and ‘Mummy Kate’ to the Royal couple. “I had a lovely letter back saying that they appreciated the kind gesture, but reluctantly had to return them because they only accept gifts from people they know personally,” said Lizzy. While William and Kate may have turned down the gift, Lizzy is delighted that she now has a growing number of regular and loyal customers. She has literally tens of thousands of buttons of all shapes, sizes and colours available and finds that a growing number of customers come into the shop wanting to change the buttons on a particular item of clothing to give it a new lease of life. “We appeal to customers of all ages, from children and teenagers right through to pensioners,” said Lizzy, who lives in Thornbury.

I WILL NEVER BUY SHOES ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN

Recruitment manager Andrea Mahn was in so much pain with her feet that she could barely walk at times.

“I had treatments by an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a sports therapist but nothing really eased the pain,” said Andrea.

This fit and active 40-year-old had for 18 months been suffering from a common condition called plantar fasciitis – sometimes known as policeman’s heel – which is a painful inflammation of the connective tissue on the sole of the foot.

She is also an enthusiastic runner and her favourite hobby was suffering due to this extremely painful condition.

In her job for Working Links she has to drive, walk and stand a lot but life was becoming unbearable.

“I was taking painkillers all the time and it got so bad that I couldn’t even walk down my stairs at home.” she said. Then Andrea saw an advert for Foot Solutions in Plymouth and decided to pay them a visit. “I just turned up hoping that someone would be able to help me,” she said, “and it was the best decision I have ever made. “The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and attentive and after about half an hour of tests and examinations they identified the problem. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined.” The Foot Solutions team adapted all of Andrea’s trainers and also provided her with a special device to help stretch her foot at night time. “I wore the device at night and it gave me immediate relief from the pain, allowing me to sleep better.

“But when the special insoles were fitted in my shoes it made a 100 per cent difference. “I had faced the prospect of never being able to wear high heels - but I can now wear a beautiful pair (which I bought from Foot Solutions) for 14 hours a day if I have to.

“I will never buy shoes anywhere else again but Foot Solutions. I have already recommended my mother and a number of friends to them.”

“The great thing about Foot Solutions is that the shoes are very fashionable too. I was genuinely surprised at the choice of stylish high heeled shoes available.”

Andrew Scowcroft of Foot Solutions said: “Plantar fasciitis is like a hidden epidemic. We see dozens of people coming into our Plymouth store every month and we have extremely good success rates with this and other debilitating conditions.”

“Now I don’t suffer at all. I can do my job and my running, the difference being I enjoy the experience, rather than being in constant pain.

Women who want to lose weight permanently or change their body shape are wasting their time with calorie counting and other slimming programmes, according to one of Plymouth’s top personal trainers. Beth Greenaway, who runs Merlin Fitness, said that far too many people yo-yo in weight, crash diet, or get sucked in to the latest fad. Most end up irreperably damaging their health, and set themselves up for certain weight gain when they return to their old habits, she said. With nearly 20 years experience in the fitness industry Beth is putting her advice into practice with a programme designed to appeal to women typically aged between 25 and 55. Having worked in other fitness businesses in Plymouth for a number of years, Beth decided to take the plunge earlier this year and launch her own 1800 square feet fitness studio at Christian Mill Business Park. “It was a real leap of faith,” said Beth, “but I wanted to develop my own distinctive fitness business and provide programmes that deliver guaranteed results for my clients,” she said. “Over the years as a fitness trainer I have positively changed literally hundreds of lives by designing programmes which have enabled my clients to not only melt off body fat, but more importantly, to keep it off!” she said. Beth’s successful programmes are based on the combination of specially designed intensive training workouts – described as metabolic magic – and personalised dietary advice through a sensible nutritional plan. “I would be lying if I said it was easy, but in order to be effective at shedding bodyfat we have to significantly raise our metabolic rate. The workouts don’t have to be long – in fact that is usually counterproductive – but they do have to challenge our higher intensity energy systems. “Anyone who thinks that endless miles of jogging are the most efficient way to burn body fat is much mistaken! A combination of exercise and a healthy diet will deliver the results that women are looking for. I don’t ask people to cut calories, but you certainly need to eat less out of bags or packets,” she said.

Beth operates a weekly rota of more than a dozen 50 minute high-intensity training sessions in the mornings – starting as early as 6.30am – and in the evenings to suit her clients’ lifestyles.

beth’s magical formula for weight loss

health matters

“We enter into an agreement at the start of the programme. My client undertakes to attend three circuit sessions a week at my studio and also do three shorter training sessions at home. If they keep to this and maintain their dietary plan I guarantee they will achieve the weight loss they want. If not I will refund all their money.” Beth’s approach is so successful that she has never had to refund any of her clients. Testimonials on her website and ‘before and after’ photos underline the results. The high intensity circuit training sessions involve a range of equipment such as kettlebells, TRX suspension trainers and sandbags. After a 10 minute warm up participants typically work at exercise stations for 60 seconds with a 30 second rest in between and the session ends with a 10 minute warm down. The exercises can generally be modified to suit most abilities and fitness levels. “We work in small groups of eight or 10 people and this helps create a real sense of comradeship with everybody working in tune with each other,” said Beth. “I believe exercise should be fun and there is always plenty of laughter and banter during our sessions. “It is not uncommon to see clients who closely follow the programme lose ten pounds in 28 days, and to begin to build new habits which will see them able to keep the fat coming off. More importantly they also feel fitter and look more toned.” Participants have a private weigh-in at the beginning of their membership, where they will be weighed and have their body fat assessed. These measurements will be taken again once each

month, and Beth is confident that if clients follow the programme they will see some spectacular results. Beth is not only highly qualified as a personal trainer, she has also competed as a top triathlete in the past. She has attended conferences all over the world to learn what it takes to really lose body fat and transform lives. Beth added: “Like most people, as I have got older – I’m 40 now - it has become increasingly more difficult to keep my waistline in check. I am fortunate in that I already know how to build and maintain a healthy body, but even I can find the pounds creeping on if I don’t pay attention to my diet and exercise habits. “In general, I don’t recommend that anyone starts a nutrition plan which they can’t stick to for the rest of their lives. A 28 day kick-start is perhaps the exception, but only when it is backed up by education and the ability to transition seamlessly into a more sustainable plan. “I do recognise that not everyone wants to be extreme enough to lose almost a stone in 20 days, but once you really understand the best way to eat and exercise, you will be able to easily and consistently lose any excess fat.” As a special introductory offer to the Merlin Fitness programme, Beth is giving Plymouth Magazine readers the chance to enrol on a 28-day kick start programme, normally costing £195, for just £69. Only the first 21 members to enrol will qualify for this massively discounted rate. For further information call Beth at Merlin Fitness on 01752 721062 or go to www.merlinfitness.com

worthwhile Staff from Plymouth Community Healthcare are working together to help a national campaign to supply children in the Third World with much needed clothing. The team, originally formed by members of the Westbourne Community Learning Disability service, found out about the international ‘Dress a Girl Around the World’ programme from colleagues working at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital, and have now formed a large group, making dresses out of pillowcases to supply to girls of various ages in the third world. ‘Dress a Girl Around the World’ began in 2009 when a member of Hope 4 Women International had an idea in taking used pillowcases and making dresses out of them for girls in Uganda who did not have proper clothing.

The charity, which works towards empowering women who are suffering from poverty, disease and low self-worth, have a dream that at least every girl around the world can own one dress. Four years on, the organisation have now shipped over 160,000 dresses to girls all over the world, who would never have normally owned a proper item of clothing. This not only empowers these children, but gives them the appearance of being cared for – something which discourages would-be predators from approaching them. The Westbourne group was founded by Linda Newbould, forensic community nurse and Linda Hambley, medical secretary for Plymouth Community Healthcare. After seeing the good work of a group led by Rebeckah Elsmere, physiotherapist at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital, they were inspired to do it for themselves. The first gathering took place in July and saw staff from throughout Plymouth Community Healthcare making dresses together, no matter what their previous sewing experience. The group are now meeting monthly and appealing to anyone who would like to donate materials (for example: pillow cases, ribbons, buttons and sequins) to contact Westbourne reception on 01752 434333. Linda Hambley, one of the Westbourne group organisers, said: “I found out about the great work that Rebeckah Elsmere was doing, making dresses for the Dress a Girl Around the World campaign and thought it was such an amazing idea. “Initially, I didn’t think I could do it as I have very little sewing experience, but my sister convinced me to give it a go and there really is very little technic involved. Hope 4 Women International provide really easy-to-follow patterns online and it seems such a small thing to do, which Lisa Hambley has such an amazing impact on young girls lives. I’m really proud of the work we’ve started and hope we can go on to send many dresses abroad.” Rebeckah Elsmere, said: “I would encourage anyone who wants to take part to take a look at the Hope 4 Women International website. These little girls have nothing and the dresses that we make give them one item which is theirs, as well as protecting their bodies in a practical way. People making dresses can include notes of well-wishing and go online to view pictures of the children wearing the clothing that they have made. The smiles in the photos show it all really.” For more information about Dress a Girl Around the World visit: www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com.

ALL TYPES OF PLUMBING & HEATING WORK UNDERTAKEN - NO JOB TOO SMALL!

Memories of the popular wartime dances at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel will be rekindled in August as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations. Hundreds of local people as well as servicemen and women used to flock to the Duke every Wednesday and Saturday during the Second World War to let their hair down, dance to big band music and forget about hostilities - at least for a few hours. Duke of Cornwall director Walter Combstock said: “We’re told that the dances were a big part of the social scene at the time and many relationships were started on the dance floor at the Duke of Cornwall. “Even when the bombs were falling during the Plymouth Blitz, it did not stop people enjoying the Duke dances - everybody came here to meet and be part of the local dance scene.” Now the Big Band sound will be heard again on Saturday August 24 as part of a programme of special themed events to mark the opening of the hotel in 1863. The Big Band Charity Night will feature the nine-piece ‘Sharps and Flats’ dance band who will recapture some of the wartime spirit.

01752 705042 • 07768 231106

The band was originally formed by Harry Brown in Plymouth in the mid-1950s - known as the Harry Brown Dance Band. Harry led the saxophone section and eventually had a regular spot at the Hyde Park Hotel, leading to the band becoming known as the Hyde Park Dance Orchestra. Harry recruited local musicians and Royal Marines bandsmen and became successful on the city scene until the late 1960s. The Harry Brown Dance Band reformed in the mid 80s when several local musicians from the City of Plymouth Concert Band wanted to play ballroom dance music. Harry himself helped the band and was always the first to arrive for rehearsals. The band played at local venues and eventually changed the name to the Sharps and Flats Dance Band. Harry sadly passed away in 2009, but his memory still lives on with the band. The playing members are mostly drawn from the City of Plymouth Concert Band and they enjoy playing ballroom standard arrangements of quicksteps, foxtrots, waltzes, latin, plus jive and 60s rock. The charity band night takes place between 7.30pm and 11.30pm with tickets costing £15 per person, £5 of which will go to the Duke’s anniversary fund-raising efforts in support of three local charities - Jeremiah’s Journey, St Luke’s Hospice and Plymouth-based Friends and Families of Special Children. While the Sharps and Flats will be in traditional black tie, dress code for guests is smart casual for the evening. The Duke’s anniversary celebrations have already included a tea dance, behind-

Jon added: “The Big Band sound remains as popular as ever and we hope the event on August 24 will prove a big hit with local people – and money raised will help three very worthwhile local causes.” The next big fund-raiser will be on September 28 when the swinging sixties will be remembered with local Cornish tribute band ‘Not the Beatles.’ Meanwhile work on the production of a commemorative brochure to mark the hotel’s anniversary continues apace. A wide range of photographs from years gone by and memorabilia will be featured in the publication. The hotel was recently presented with two original bills from 1918 and a luggage label from the 1920s. “We’re particularly grateful to Paul Davies, chair of the Devon & Cornwall Polar Society and Harley and Di Lawer of the Plymouth Postcard Collectors Club for tracking down these items,” said Jon. successful kitchen plans further growth and One of Plymouth’s leading independent kitchen and bedroom companies is celebrating its fifth anniversary with further plans for expansion and development of the business.

and impartial advice but also deliver on time and to budget.

KF Kitchens and Bedrooms was launched at Faraday Mill in 2008 by husband and wife Nathan and Derinda Damarell and their business partner Simon Rice.

“If homeowners are thinking of buying a new kitchen or bedroom we encourage them to come and see us first. We can provide a no-obligation quotation within a few days and only ask for a £500 deposit at point of order - even if it’s for a £20,000 kitchen.”

Between them they have over 60 years’ experience in the kitchen and bedroom industry and boast one of the largest kitchen showrooms in the South West. With over 40,000 square feet of space and more than 30 kitchens, bedrooms and room sets on display, KF can cater for every taste and budget. Nathan said: “We don’t sell kitchens and bedrooms – we help customers to buy one.

“We hear stories all the time from customers who have been given the run-around by some of the big stores, often being asked to pay the whole price up front and then being expected to wait several months for their new kitchen.

KF Kitchens and Bedrooms highly-rated customer service and business ethos was recognised earlier this year when they received the coveted ‘Buy With Confidence’ Trading Standards seal of approval. Continued investment and development of the business has enabled KF to establish an enviable reputation for high quality kitchens and bedrooms at affordable prices.

“We give an independent, honest opinion on products based on our years of experience and help our customers to achieve the kitchen or bedroom of their dreams at a budget they can afford.

Latest developments include the launch of new branding and signage, more new kitchen installations in the next few weeks and the launch of a top quality range of bedroom furniture.

“Customers are frequently surprised that our bespoke kitchen and bedroom solutions are similar to off-the-shelf alternatives offered by the national chains and DIY sheds.”

Simon said: “The bedroom market has remained relatively static over the last few years, but we have identified a stunning British-made selection of fitted bedroom furniture which we will be featuring in a completely new bedroom display area,” said Nathan.

Nathan said that the industry had undergone massive changes in the last five years with a number of high-profile brands and businesses disappearing from the High Street. “More and more customers are recognising that independent companies like ours not only offer high quality, professional

The new display will be launched at a special event on Saturday September 7 when KF will not only unveil its new kitchens and bedrooms, but also host a NEFF cooking day. The event will also mark the introduction of new Dekton range of worktops which are set to revolutionise the market. Nathan and Derinda recently visited the hi-tech factory in Spain where the Dekton range is produced by Cosentino, the global leader in natural stone, quartz and recycled surfacing. Derinda said: “Consentino have invested over 90 million Euros in the new Dekton range, including the construction of a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, which we were fortunate enough to visit earlier this year. The ultra-compact surface is completely scratch resistant and can handle temperatures up to 700 degrees. “The styles and colours available are incredible. It can be manufactured in colours identical to wood, rust, natural stone, concrete, metal and solid colours and is available in a vast variety of textures, such as rippled, leather, denim, slate, brushed or coated. We are all really excited about the Dekton range and all our other developments taking place over the next few weeks. “We hope past, present and prospective customers will come along on September 7 and see what exciting products we have to offer.” For more information contact KF Kitchens and Bedrooms, 66 Faraday Mill, Cattedown, Plymouth. time for celebration at popular One of Plymouth’s most popular Indian restaurants is celebrating a successful five years in business. Launched by brothers Shah and Hisbul Hussain in 2008, the Nibana Restaurant at Crownhill Shops in Morshead Road has established a reputation for the finest authentic Indian dishes. Nibana has several meanings including ‘heaven on earth’, ‘enlightenment’ and ‘fulfilment’ and each description could match what is on offer at the restaurant. “We set out to create a contemporary, stylish family-run restaurant offering a completely modern style of Indian cooking,” said Shah. “We have combined this with a warm and relaxing atmosphere and we have been delighted with the success of the restaurant. “We have an excellent team at the Nibana both in the kitchen and front of house. They work really well together,” he added. The brothers, who hail originally from London, have been in Plymouth for 12 years and gained valuable experience running Indian takeaways in the city before taking the plunge and opening their own restaurant. “We live in the Crownhill area and were aware that there are few, if any, places for people to eat in the village,” said Hisbul. They have worked hard over the years and put a lot of time, effort and energy into the business ensuring it remains up to date with the latest trends in Indian cuisine and style. With plenty of free parking just a few steps away and the restaurant located in a prominent position in the bustling shopping area in the heart of Crownhill, Style and comfort at Nibana the brothers were confident their venture would

prove attractive to customers. And their business intuition proved accurate. “We have a loyal and growing customer base who not only come from the immediate area around Crownhill, but also from right across the whole of Plymouth and as far away as Cornwall,” said Shah. “Our aim is to present traditional, authentic and contemporary Indian food at affordable prices in a very pleasant and stylish environment,” he added. “The menu is buzzing with exciting flavours to suit everybody’s taste buds, ranging from hot to creamy mild curries, including both modern and traditional classic dishes. We are happy to serve dishes to suit the customer’s precise preferences.” Shah, who runs the kitchen side of the business, works closely with the chefs to create and introduce new dishes to the menu. He travels far and wide to discover new dishes to add to the menu. The restaurant also offers authentic dishes among their chef’s specialities which are not normally available at other restaurants elsewhere in the city. These include Chashni Chicken or Lamb, a dish noted for its flavours, using Kashmiri Massalla, coriander and chillies, onions, peppers, topped with a splash of crispy potatoes. Other favourites are Murug Katta Massala - barbecued chicken breast fillets, stuffed with minced lamb with fresh ginger, garlic, green peppers and exotic spices – and Naga Biryani, chicken tikka with chillies and prawns “All these dishes are extremely popular with our customers,” said Shah. Presentation is one of the keys to the success of Nibana, reflected in the stylish decor of the 65-seat restaurant and on the plate with the colourful and eye-catching way dishes are prepared.

nibana Nibana’s quality of food and service has also been recognised with a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and a Qualityfoods Certificate in recognition of its presentation and service. Customer comments endorse the popularity of Nibana. Recent comments posted by customers Trip Advisor include: “We’ve spent the last couple of years trying to find a great curry restaurant in and around Plymouth and at last we have. Great food, fresh, tasty and not swimming in ghee. A friendly welcome with good service that finds the balance between being attentive and giving you the space to enjoy the experience.” “Love this restaurant. Perfectly set out with excellent service at all times. The food is absolutely delicious, have not been to another Indian restaurant since this one, fantastic!”

Recognising the fact that customers perhaps have a little less to spend these days, Nibana offers a Thali Night special on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings - six sumptuous courses served in bowls on a round plate showcasing the best Nibana has to offer, along with traditional starters for just £9.95 per head. Nibana also offers a three course lunchtime special at £9.95, this time with three different set meals to choose from. A takeaway service is also available (collection only) and again the brothers have come up with an anniversary offer for customers. There is a 20 per cent discount on takeaway orders over £15 from Sundays to Thursdays. Nibana has become an established part of not only the Plymouth dining scene but also the local community. Their charitable efforts helped raise £1100 for the Birch Ward Trust Fund and they have also supported the Widey Primary School PTA. Nibana is open lunchtimes from 12.30 to 2.30 (closed Sunday lunchtime) and evenings from 5.30 to 11.30 seven days a week. It is always advisable to book to avoid disappointment, especially at the weekend.

it’s laughter all the way at pavilions in november Three of Britain’s most popular comedians will be lining up for shows at Plymouth Pavilions in November. First up on November 6 is Ed Byrne. A self-confessed ‘miserable old git’ since the age of 23, Ed is now in his Forties. While for others this might result in a crisis that prompts the purchase of a sports car, Ed embraces middle age with open arms. Join him, as he truly comes of age and gives out his clarion cry: “I am in my Forties. Hear me roar!” A week later on November 13 Alan Davies brings his ‘Life is Pain’ tour to make his debut in Plymouth. He first toured with the show in 2012 and due to its phenomenal success is back on the road again. The much-loved star of iconic television series such as Jonathan Creek and QI has lost none of his deeply funny appeal. Sean Lock

Last but by no means least Sean Lock brings his ‘Purple Van Man’ show to the Pavilions on November 16. Filled with gags, opinions, deft observations and some silly voices this is Sean Lock doing what he does best, spouting inspired jibber jabber as he crosses the country in his purple van. He will make you laugh like a drunken horse. Sean Lock is one of the UK’s most highly acclaimed and original comedians. The British Comedy Award winner has performed on Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

gala charity concert by gilbert and sullivan fellowship Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship will be presenting a Gala 90th anniversary concert in aid of the RNLI in October. The Gala Concert is in St Andrew’s Minster Plymouth on October 12 at 7.30pm. The Fellowship will be joined by Jill Pert and Richard Suart acclaimed international performers of Gilbert and Sullivan and vice presidents of the society. Rehearsals for the concert are under way and the programme will include some pieces from more obscure works as well as many of our audience’s favourites.

The first production was The Mikado in March 1924 at the Repertory Theatre, Since 1924 the Fellowship has produced over 90 full productions of the Savoy Operas at Plymouth theatres as diverse as the Globe, the Palace, the Athenaeum and twenty at the Theatre Royal, as well as numerous concerts, most of them for charity. Two productions of Yeoman of the Guard were performed in the superb setting of the Citadel on Plymouth Hoe. Another particularly memorable production was of HMS Pinafore performed aboard HMS Antelope, which later went down in the Falklands War.

The Fellowship, founded in 1923, is believed to be the oldest continuing society devoted to the works of WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan in the country.

Even less well known operas such as Utopia Limited, The Grand Duke and The Zoo have all been produced at least once.

Members come not only from Plymouth, but many from Tavistock and further afield in Devon and Cornwall to enjoy being part of a thriving musical community that produces high quality and award winning operettas.

In 2009 the Fellowship staged its first non-Gilbert and Sullivan opera – Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow and then My Fair Lady in 2012. Box Office 01752 829176 or book online at www.plymouthgilbertandsullivan.com

It also has produced concerts and recordings with HM Royal Marine Band Plymouth in aid of the RNLI.

THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES: THE IMPORTANCE OF BACK TO SCHOOL EYE TESTS Back to school time can be a flurry of stress and expense; from buying new

shoes and stationery, to booking haircuts and locating missing PE kits. It is little wonder that children’s sight tests can fall to the bottom of the ‘To Do’ list. As the new school year beckons, independent Plymouth opticians MaximEyes – based on Plympton’s Ridgeway – urges parents to have their children’s eyes tested. The practice has a division dedicated to children, Minim-Eyes, which provides state-of-the-art sight tests and stocks a large range of glasses. Up to a million children in the UK have undetected vision problems which can impact on their behavior, ability to learn, read and concentrate. Eye examinations can help identify treatable childhood eye conditions including Amblyopia, which presents itself as a squint or ‘lazy eye’ and can cause irreparable damage if not diagnosed and treated by 7-8 years of age. Nigel Gainey, Lead Optometrist at Maxim-Eyes, comments, “A child’s longterm vision and their development at school are at risk without regular eye tests. Many parents assume their child will have their vision checked at school, but this is unlikely. Children need their eyes tested every year and we advise making it part of the back to school routine.” Nigel and the team have 50 years’ combined experience in ocular health and can guide parents through the process, as well as putting little ones at ease throughout. If they need glasses, Minim-Eyes offers fun and functional frames. The new school year can be a costly time, but sight tests are free for under16s on the NHS and there is help towards the cost of glasses. Make an appointment now on 01752 335258 or visit www.maxim-eyes.co.uk for information. Nigel and the team have premises at Plympton and St. Budeaux.

Expect an eclectic mix of rock, folk, punk, and hip-hop plus trad jazz, choral, blues, shanty, brass, barbershop, acoustic, samba, calypso, jump-jive, classical guitar, and big bands. Also planned are children’s activities, free drumming and didgeridoo workshops, Zumba on the beach, craft stalls, and a chance to find out about local marine and wildlife in and around Looe.

Looe Music Festival 2013 promises over 60 bands, three stages … and one big party on the beach over the weekend of September 27 to 29. It’s a quarter of the price of Glastonbury, it’s just down the road … and there’s no mud. What are you waiting for? Get your tickets now at www.looemusic. co.uk and find out whether Chas & Dave will wear Lederhosen. See you on the beach!

art trail will showcase work of city artists Plymouth Hoe by city artist Katrina Solano, who will be exhibiting at the Trerise Gallery

Plymouth artists will be opening their studios between the end of August and September 8 in an event called the Plymouth Art Trail. It will provide members of the public to buy original art direct. Plymouth Art Trail forms part of the annual Drawn to the Valley event when scores of artists who live along the Tamar Valley and the surrounding area open their doors to the public. As part of Plymouth Art Trail, new work by three city artists - Katrina Solano, Jan Brewerton and Maureen Douglas-Green – will be staged in an exhibition called New Horizons at the Trerise Gallery overlooking Plymouth Sound. The exhibition has its own horizons with a wide range of works in painting, printmaking and photography. New Horizons can be viewed at the Trerise Gallery, 135 Hoe Road, Plymouth. The gallery is open to the public from 10am to 8pm each day. • The Trerise Gallery is a unique and inspiring space for displaying art. The south facing windows, with uncharacteristic deepened reveals, filter the light throughout the space. In both its size and general layout the gallery has been fitted with floating partitions especially designed to give extra hanging space without compromising the feeling of the open gallery space.

art matters

talented local artists exhibit at artframe solution Plymouth’s Artframe Solution is holding a charity art auction starting on Friday September 13 between 7pm and 9.30pm at its gallery at Faraday Mill.

Whilst at Artframe Solution I also met up with Bob Pearce, a local former Royal Marine. He has produced a special photograph to help raise funds for the lads who have come back from Afghanistan.

All are welcome to this special event which will raise money for a number of important charities.

His spectacular Dartmoor Dewerstone Memorial picture represents an honourable tribute to the guys who didn’t make it back. A ghosted image of a Marine has been imposed onto the Dartmoor crag that, Bob tells me, is the spiritual home of 42 Commando.

I went down to talk to Artframe Solution’s Sean James to find out more.

In a completely different style and theme is the work of Jacqueline Gale. This Devon based artist interprets places and themes using fabric and textiles. The result is fun- filled pictures that are delightful to view. Because Jacqueline loves the coastline, much of her work carries a nautical theme.

He said: “It’s going to be a great preview evening and will carry on throughout the week ahead. We have got 12 local artists taking part and displaying their work. “Some are well established in their profession, others are upand-coming. Each will contribute one of their pieces to go into the auction. These will be presented on easels in front of a collection of each artists work. “The style of the auction will not be ‘bidding from the floor’ but will be a ‘silent auction’ that will take place by filling out a form and dropping your bid in a box. At the end of the week the box will be emptied and the folk who have placed the highest bid on each of the contributions will be notified.”

She is never short of inspiration living in this glorious part of the world, but likes the challenge of putting her own spin on things. Although she used to paint, all her adult life she has loved fabric. Ten months ago she learnt how to do freehand embroidery and appliqué. She recently launched her artwork at the Yealmpton Show.

Multi-award winning photographer Louise Sumner is another contributor who will also be showing some of her work. Having Sean has selected four charities that will benefit from this event – Kerry Cole scooped the UK Wedding Photographer of the Year award 2012, Royal Marines Association, British Heart Foundation, Jeremiah’s her gift for producing unique, beautifully styled images has brought Journey and St Luke’s Hospice, who will all be allocated three artists each. her much acclaim. by

The fact that she is based in Plymouth means we are able to access such talent right on our doorstep! Unfortunately, I haven’t got the space to tell you about all of the dozen artists who are involved in the event, but will end by featuring Chris Spendlove. He was born and raised in Plymouth and has been drawing for about 30 years. Formerly in service, as a Ministry of Defence police officer, he has spent more than 400 hours on a drawing of a soldier called ‘Man Down – The Fall of a Hero’ Sean tells me that light refreshments will also be served at what promises to be a great night out.

Bob Pearce’s haunting Dartmoor Dewerstone image which pays tribute to Marines who have not returned from Afghanistan

For more information on the event please contact Sean on 01752 604488. Artframe Solution 360- 362 Faraday Mill, Plymouth www.artframesolution.co.uk Opening hours Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (Thurs 6.30pm) Saturday 9.30am to 1pm.

it’s all down question of The summer holidays may be upon us, but it’s pretty much business as usual for the local Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses. A major project for Plymouth FSB in the last three months and for the foreseeable future, is our work on the Plymouth Fairness Commission. Although as Chair I am attending the monthly meetings, the committee members want the contributions we make on behalf of micro businesses to reflect the views of as many of us as possible. As part of team of Commissioners, I have been representing our 1,000 members with what I hope is a practical business view on uncovering issues of unfairness in the city. Chaired by Dame Suzi Leather, the Commission is currently taking evidence

direct from organisations, interest groups, individuals and businesses, as well as analysing statistical data and other evidence, aimed at rooting out issues that are making life unfair for some people in living in Plymouth. The Commission, which has been set up as an independent body, will report back to Plymouth City Council next April with its findings and recommendations. Already, there are a number of topics coming to the fore, for example the wide disparity in death rates across the different wards in the city, as well as issues surrounding access to health provision.

As is usual when I am asked to participate in representing the FSB in the city, I am always keen to hear from other members and hear their views. At the moment the views from businesses are in the minority on the Commission and I am finding it is surprisingly hard to get people to commit their thoughts ‘to paper’. Unfortunately for some people sometimes, when I am asked for my opinion I invariably give it (and sometimes at some length!) so I do find it hard to believe that the business community members haven’t as yet responded to requests for feedback in any numbers. Do we really not have many views on things people they have found difficult in running a business? Don’t they have views on things happening where they work or live which they feel need raising for greater scrutiny? This is a genuine opportunity to ‘shine a light’ on topics we may well have complained about in the past, or not understood why something is like it is. As time is fairly precious for all of us, I resist the temptation to get involved in FSB activities which don’t make the best use of my time and one of the first questions I asked on considering joining the Commission was – what’s going to happen to the final report? I certainly wasn’t going to participate in a tick box exercise and have been assured that this is not such a case. I’m having faith. So, would people like to support this FSB work in the city and back the committee up and have a think about what is fair and unfair in the city and make a contribution? We look forward to hearing from you! See www.plymouthfairnesscommission.co.uk for more details

Staff at Peter Goord Travel in Plymouth are celebrating after scoring highly in a ‘Mystery Shopper’ feature in one of the industry’s leading trade magazines. Travel Weekly’s mystery shopper visited three travel agents in Plymouth asking for help and advice on booking a spa break. The visit to Peter Goord Travel resulted in a score of 95% - the highest for any travel agent this year. Travel Weekly commented: “95% is our highest score this year - out of 24 issues of Travel Weekly so far in 2013, only 11 agents have achieved a score of 90% or higher. “Our Mystery Shopper uses a rigorous scoring system, rating everything from the appearance of the shop and its staff, to customer service, knowledge of the destination and its hotels, and the quality of the holiday recommendation offered. It’s a tough test for any agency, and taking the top spot is a coveted prize within the UK travel industry, reflecting the hard work and dedication of a strong sales team which clearly puts its customers first.”

By Travel Expert Anthony Goord

The feature in the publication reported on the visit to Peter Goord Travel as follows: “This experience was excellent on every level. The store was elegant and well-designed with a warm and personable agent who took the time to understand why I wanted to take a spa break, which is probably why her suggestions were spot on.” Winning agent Kelly Price, the consultant who served the Mystery Shopper said: “I love spa holidays and I’ve got one booked in the UK soon. We sell a lot of spa holidays, whether it’s short breaks to Bath or hotels in the Maldives. The most important thing is finding out what the client wants, then ticking all the boxes.”

Anthony Goord said: “Although it was Kelly who was singled out for special praise, this top score reflects the quality, knowledge and professionalism of the whole team here at Peter Goord Travel.”

samantha’s memorable sri lankan experience Staff at Peter Goord Travel are occasionally offered ‘familiarisation trips or educationals’ to help improve their knowledge of particular resorts or destinations. Here Samantha Rutherford talks about her recent visit to Sri Lanka. I have worked at Peter Goord travel for four years and was fortunate to travel to Sri Lanka with a tour operator called Cox & Kings. I am going to share with you some of my experiences from this exciting visit. Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is an island located in the Indian Ocean extremely close to the southeast tip of India and south of the Bay of Bengal.

will reach the top where you’ll find the ruins of the royal palace with a large bathing pool with its sweeping views of rivers, mountains and dense forests around it. Not only was I on the top of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, but without doubt it was also the top of my experience in Sri Lanka. We were also lucky enough to visit the spice garden which is situated in Matale. Sri Lanka is well known for its spices and healing herbs and on this exciting excursion they let you in on all the little secrets used by the local community. Whereas we go to the doctors or our local pharmacy to get a medicine or cure, many locals in Sri Lanka make these from natural sources. The fragrant smelling gardens feature many important herbs such as Sandalwood, Margosa, Cocoa, Citronella, Almond, Jasmine and Coconut. We were taken round by a guide to experience first-hand how cloves, pepper, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and saffron are grown in their natural surroundings.

It’s a diverse and beautiful country and offers many picturesque and cultural highlights including the ancient sites of the ‘cultural triangle’ exotic beaches and the scenic ‘Tea Country’. I got to climb the 370 metres of Sigiriya rock to see the breath-taking views of the surrounding countryside. There are around 1200 steps to the summit, but don’t let that scare you as if you need a little helping hand there Sri Lanka locals known as ‘pushers’ to give you the extra strength you need, for a small price of course!

The weather in Sri Lanka is consistently warm, sunny and very humid. In the lowland areas around the coast, the temperatures are much higher. The south west coast experiences monsoon rains between May and October, while the north east coast monsoon occurs between October and December. As Sri Lanka is a large island with many sights to see, the distances can be very long, although while you are travelling there is always something of interest as you’re going through different towns and seeing how the locals live. The guides are very knowledgeable and, like the locals, extremely friendly. They can answer any questions along your adventure. Sri Lanka has something to offer for everyone: families, couples and honeymooners alike. You can see as much culture, wildlife or beach as your prefer and we can also make this into a twin centre holiday with Dubai or the Maldives. We tailor make your holiday to the dream you have always wanted.

dedication of two volunteers horticultural therapy project A therapeutic horticulture-based project which for 12 years helped hundreds of people recover from mental illness and acquired brain injuries faced closure when its parent charity went into administration last year. But the two staff running the project decided that the work was too important and worked on a voluntary basis for several months, often for over 60 hours a week. Dennis Trewin and Deb Hoskin knew that the project had resulted in life-changing progress for many of the participants, giving them them the opportunity to socialise and gain confidence through gardening. It also proved vital help with their rehabilitation and recovery. They decided that, despite losing their jobs, they couldn’t leave the participants without this lifeline, to possibly return to the lonely excluded lives many had lived before. They agreed to meet on a weekly basis to support those who still wished to attend. For legal reasons, at first the support meetings were held in a local cafe. Eventually after working as volunteers for weeks and weeks, having to sign on, trying to keep themselves, their own families and participants hopeful, the pair successfully found three trustees who knew how important the project was and with help from Point Europa in Cornwall they formed their own independent charity called the Horticultural Therapy Trust. Now, a year later, the charity currently operates on Wednesdays at Penlee Valley allotments in Stoke where there is an environmentally friendly, very large tiered

allotment plot, with a polytunnel, portacabin and barbecue and other facilities. The plot features raised beds at different heights to suit all needs and abilities from standing to sitting and from the smaller to the taller, gentle to physical challenging tasks and various types of gardening. On Thursdays the project is based in Torpoint in a walled garden with safe and secluded, peaceful garden areas. Transport is available from Plymouth. Dennis has 40 years experience in horticulture and is a qualified NVQ trainer and assessor. Deb has a background in nursing and is a trained and qualified listener. She also has an award in social and therapeutic horticulture. They are supported by more than 20 volunteers. Since setting up the Horticultural Therapy Trust they have been successful in securing funding from the Lottery and also from grant making trusts, as well as receiving donations from individuals and organisations. “Plymouth City Council have also been incredibly helpful, initially helping to clear the site and turn over the soil,” said Dennis. The pair have developed a range of gardening-based programmes, including ‘Seeds of Change’ for disadvantaged or excluded young people. Their ‘Garden and Grow’ project involves dozens of primary school children. They support the well-being of adults challenged by long term or severe mental health issues or acquired brain injuries, often working alongside social services, mental health agencies, families and carers. Individuals suffering with depression, anxiety or recovering from physical illness are also helped through the therapy the Trust provides.

kept a vital alive A small social enterprise team has also been established, leading towards employability by carrying out maintenance in gardens and commercial properties. Denis said: “More work is needed to keep the team busy so if you have or know of a garden in need, it can be priced up for a monthly visit for you to keep it well maintained.” Dennis and Deb praised the role of the three trustees – Paul Keller, Bea Campbell and Sue Lumsden - whose involvement made the creation of the new charity a reality. “Without them it would not have been possible,” said Dennis. Comments from people who have benefited from the Trust’s work highlight the importance of the project: ‘This is where I relax, it is my own piece of freedom’ ‘It is a social, I make friends, people accept me here. I learn new skills, do something, my memory is better. I am stronger!’ ‘I like being outdoors. It’s calm. I can do something. I like the challenge’

Deb said: “Why not come along for a chat and see how things really are and how relaxed the atmosphere is. You can ask a social worker or key worker for a referral. People can also apply as a private participant using their personal budget to pay for a half day or day with us.” If you are interested in using the services of the Horticultural Therapy Trust contact Dennis on 07908 107145 or Deb on 07507 675344. bee friendly to insects when July was a fabulous month with lovely weather and lots going on at the garden centre. Our best news is that our long awaited coffee shop extension is finally getting started this month! It’s very exciting and we hope you will like the first part of our two phase development. Gardening – what a year! It took so long to get started and now we are having a heatwave as I write this: from one extreme to the other! But despite a slow start we can all finally relax and enjoy the gardens because they should be in full growth and bloom. It has been a really difficult year in a lot of industries not just ours and it has been tricky managing stocks and demand particularly this late surge in demand for all the things you are supposed to buy in April and May. Many people only started planting vegetables and hanging baskets in late June or early July and of course the growers have been cautious this year (you can’t blame them) and have run out of stock early. So in order to keep the colour in the garden we have moved our stock on to larger more established plants and herbaceous perennials which are in full flower now. Here are Derek’s Top Tips for keeping your garden in full colour and bloom this summer: To keep baskets, pots, beds and borders at their best, it is important to continually dead head flowers for continued blooming. This includes annuals and herbaceous perennials. A feed once a fortnight with a multipurpose liquid fertilliser will also help prolong flowering and keep them looking their best well into the autumn. Feeding your plants is particularly important for those plants that are in pots and baskets, as they will quickly exhaust the nutrient supply from the compost. Remember to stake and support large annuals and herbaceous perennials such as Dahlias and Delphiniums when they are in flower, because the wind and rain

can easily bend and break and snap their large flower heads.

Start to harvest cucumbers, peas and beans that have ripened for the most succulent crop and to encourage further fruit to develop. Pick courgettes now as well, pick the fruits when they are young (approximately 15cm), for the best taste as fruits will loose flavour as they mature. To make the most out of the growing season, sow carrots, beetroot, spinach, radish, lettuce and salad leaves for a quick autumn crop. It is also a good time to sow winter vegetables and seed potatoes in time for a Christmas crop. To extend the flowering season into late autumn, get out now and plant autumn flowering Cyclamen, Crocus and Colchicums bulbs. They will naturalise and bulk up very quickly under trees and shrubs and burst into flower just as everything else is coming to an end, providing colour and cheer. As well as autumn flowering bulbs, it is also time to start thinking about spring flowering bulbs. Planning your display and getting the bulbs in the ground early will help them get settled and established more quickly before winter sets in. This will guarantee a fantastic show of colour in the following spring. We have just had a delivery of our bulb range. Now is the time to give Wisterias their summer prune. Cut all of this years growth back to five buds or 15cm (6”) from the main stems and branches and feed with a high potash fertilliser. This allows the dormant buds to swell and help encourage it to flower well the following spring. looking good A good shrub to add colour and Hibiscus Syriacus - produces large large exotic blooms to our borders saucer shaped pink, white or blue is Hibiscus Syriacus. This is a hardy flowers deciduous shrub that will thrive in full sun to partial shade in most soil types. Grows to approximately 3m (10’) in height, but can be kept smaller by pruning. It produces large, saucer shaped flowers from mid summer to autumn. The flowers are available in blue, white or pink.

Anemone Huphensis – produces an abundance of flowers

A good perennial for a shady spot are the Japanese Anemones (Anemone Huphensis). They grow between 60cm-1m (2-3’) in height and can be used as ground cover. They like most soil types and are suitable for both sun and shade. They produce an abundance of flowers from August right the way through to the frosts. Flowers are available in many shades of pink and white. Anemones can also be used

you choose your plants in wildlife gardens to attract bees and butterflies.

Look out for bee symbols on some of the suppliers labels for guidance. So I wish you all a prolonged sunny August – fingers crossed the July weather will last.

To attract bees and butterflies into the garden, the best and most reliable plant by far has to be Buddleja. There many different varieties now ranging from 1-4m (3-12’) in height, so there a buddleja for just about any suitable spot in the garden. They are incredibly easy to grow and flower right through to the frosts, bees and butterflies just love the nectar rich flowers. The flowers are available in shades of purple, pink, blue Buddleja is a real magnet for and white. Many other modern butterflies and other insects varieties, (particularly among the dwarves) have sterile flowers, so self seeding will not become a problem.

Apologies if you come in to the coffee shop and we are operating with reduced seating and service at times, but we are staying open and should be up and running with a new kitchen and lovely new seating area by mid October just in time for Christmas lunches! Ahhh! Did I mention the word Christmas! Sorry but I am expecting cards and crackers any day! Happy Gardening. Fiona & Derek

Verbena Bonariensis is a great perennial to use for intermingling throughout other plants and linking areas together. It can grow to 2m (6’) in height and produces clusters of purple flowers on long thin stems. It doesn’t require staking and is ideal for planting in airy drifts, softening displays and creating movement throughout the border. It is a great late season source of nectar for the bees and butterflies. Other reliable plants that are looking great and giving the garden a real splash of colour at this time of year are rudbeckias, crocosmias, dahlias, hemerocallis, gaillardias and salvias.

roses At this time of year it is important to dead head and feed roses to encourage a succession of blooms through the season. Keeping the bases of roses clear from weeds and covering with a mulch of good garden compost or well rotted manure will help reduce water loss and competition for nutrients. Whilst dead heading, it is an excellent opportunity to check the health of your roses. Look for signs of pests and diseases and take appropriate action to tackle them. A problem caught early on is always easier to deal with. Roses should be in full colour at this time of year and looking great. One of my favourites is Rose Moment in Time, a floribunda variety, growing to 0.6m (2’) in height. It is repeat flowering with beautiful bright scarlet coloured, medium sized, lightly scented flowers. It has dark green, glossy leaves, good disease resistance and won Rose of the Year 2012.
