We’ve hardly had a moment to catch our breath after the spectacular Flavour Fest and British Firework Championships in August before Plymouth’s spectacular Ocean City Festival bursts into life in September.

The event has been renamed from last year’s Marine City Festival to reflect the city’s new branding as Britain’s Ocean City.

I must say that the new branding is really growing on me. I really couldn’t understand the previous ‘Positively Plymouth’ slogan, which was far too vague to convey anything specific about this wonderful city of ours.

Do you...

The 13-day Ocean City Festival has a whole host of events to appeal not only to families, but also scientists, marine biologists, educators and explorers alike.

• Have experience in mental health and/or learning disability support work? • Have a safe, caring and supportive home for one or two vulnerable adults in a family environment?

I’m particularly looking forward to the Seafood Festival over the weekend of September 20 to 22. Why not get down to the Barbican and see some of the best local chefs in action. Congratulations to the team behind the event for all their hard work and planning let’s hope the weather stays dry and bright and that many thousands of visitors will come to the city for the festival.

Once approved, we offer:

My other half and our eldest son have both been down in the dumps this month after their beloved Plymouth Argyle lost their first three matches of the season. But the news that the plans for the development of Higher Home Park have been approved unanimously by the city council planning committee (and the team’s impressive away win at Cheltenham) have certainly lifted their spirits. I’m looking forward to Saturday evenings being a whole lot happier now in the Girdler household than over the last few years. There’s no doubt that when Argyle are doing well and the crowds flock back to Home Park it makes such a big difference to life in the city (and at home!)

leila’s fashion dream is fulfilled in madagascar A former Derriford doctor has left the world of medicine to make her mark in the fashion world nearly 6,000 miles away in Madagascar. After studying medicine and working as a junior doctor at Derriford for more than two years Leila Rose Mamie left Plymouth last year to establish an innovative clothing company, aimed in particular at young people who back-pack around the world. Leila, who is 28, said: “My path in fashion actually started at the Plymouth College of Art where I took evening classes in fashion design in 2011 alongside my day job. “My job working as a doctor at Derriford was a wonderful vocation, but I did not believe that it was my calling in life. It was an extremely difficult decision to make, but in 2011 I left medicine. “I dreamt of creating my own brand and Plymouth College of Art gave me the grounding and some of the tools needed to do this. After leaving medicine I went

backpacking around the world and saw a need for clothing that adapts to the huge variety of needs whilst travelling. “We are producing the clothing in Madagascar with a small team of five people, plus freelance professionals in Europe and provide work in one of the poorest countries in the world. Alongside the clothing production we have also created a social project where we are sending children to school.” Leila has established Kameleon Rose, a new clothing brand featuring innovative adaptable clothing from sustainable materials in Madagascar. Her signature product for women is the Kameleon, which is made of 100 per cent bamboo fabric and can be worn in 50 different ways. Leila has also designed the Wrap, an adaptable unisex accessory that looks like a scarf, but has a secret pocket enabling it to become a cool bag. It can also be used as a top, shawl, skirt or pillow protector. Like the Kameleon the Wrap is also made from 100 per cent bamboo fabric. Leila’s products are now selling in nine countries in Europe and 22 shops after just 12 months. “I believe that we should follow our passion in life, however that does not mean we will meet no challenges. I just hope that this story can inspire people to follow their dreams!” Leila has recently launched a campaign on Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website where she is raising funds to grow the company. She hopes to raise £10,000 by the middle of September to fund the launch and international promotion of a new 2014 collection. “My aim is to create a revolution within The Kameleon...an innovative product made the clothing industry of bamboo fabric that can be worn in 50 by making innovative ways clothing that, unlike normal clothing adapts to life, made from sustainable materials. We also want to take sustainability to the next level. “Not only are the clothes made from eco friendly materials and assembled under ethical conditions, these products adapt to one’s style and taste, lasting throughout the seasons.”

‘In praise of Stretch Walkers Retired civil servant Pamela Parkin had suffered with painful discomfort in her feet for more than 40 years.

Pamela later purchased a more formal pair of Wolky Shoes from Foot Solutions for her grandaughter’s wedding. “They fit me perfectly and helped make it a very special day,” said Pamela. Since her first visit to Foot Solutions, Pamela has undergone surgery on both her feet to try and deal with the problem. “It has been a painful process, but finding Foot Solutions has helped me to cope with my condition,” she added.

Her hereditary problem involved bunions and hammer toes: this condition in turn caused painful calluses on the toe joints and severely affected her walking. Pamela, who lives in Plymstock, was thrilled when her health provider prescribed specially made orthotic insoles. The problem was she faced a wait of several months for the insoles to be delivered – and her feet were getting worse all the time. Pamela takes up the story: “I was walking down Royal Parade and I noticed that there was a new shoe shop called Foot Solutions. “I looked at the advertisements in the window and realised that they might be able to help me.” Pamela went into the store and

difference they made. “I was due to attend a 60th birthday party and wanted shoes that were not only comfortable, but also looked smart. Stretch Walkers were the answer for me,” she said.

Stretch Walkers feature stretch technology that lessen the load on the joints of the feet and also encourage good posture.

“I go swimming with friends several times a week and they all remarked on how I was walking not only better, but also more upright. They even noticed that my footprint on the side of the pool looked more normal.”

They also provide comfort and support for the feet and toes and Pamela was delighted with the

Edward Waite sketching in the Royal William Yard

The work of one of the rising stars of the contemporary art world will be featured in a major exhibition which opens in Plymouth in September. Edward Waite, who is just 24, has quickly established an international reputation for his contemporary work and his paintings and sketches are much in demand. Plymouth-based Art Source UK are staging an exhibition of Edward’s work at the Royal William Yard and for the first time will be creating a ‘live studio’ where visitors have the opportunity to meet Edward and talk to him while he paints his fast and fluid work. Trevor Horswell, founder of Art Source UK said: “We had a fantastic response to our Timmy Mallett exhibition earlier this year and are expecting Edward’s exhibition to attract art lovers from all over the South West. “We had 7,500 visitors to Timmy’s exhibition and we hope to attract even more to see Edward’s work, especially when he is working ‘live.’ This is without doubt the most exciting event that Art Source UK has staged for many years. “Over the years, every now and again, along comes an artist with passion or style

showcasing work of talented young artist or flair, Edward has all three,” said Trevor. “The reaction from our clients to his work has been more than positive. His large over sized canvases that we specialise in have been selling before they are completed. When this happens, I know we have found an artist that is going to go a long way.” Trevor said that arts students from schools, colleges and the university in Plymouth are being invited to attend the exhibition and to see Edward at work. “Edward is still a young man, but clearly has a great future ahead of him. We’re sure he will prove an inspiration to other budding young artists.” Edward grew up by the sea and his first style of painting was of surfing silhouettes. His style soon changed when he started studying Fine Art at Lincoln University, becoming absorbed by city buildings and other structural surroundings. Edward Waite (above) and (below) one of his After gaining his degree Edward has distinctive urban landscapes developed a passion for art and travel. His Plymouth show is titled Urban Architecture - the Fast Pace of City Life and depicts iconic buildings from cities around the world including Plymouth. Edward said: “I work with urban scenes rather than rural landscapes as I see the countryside as a picture already created. However, within an urban environment it is often necessary to create a picture of beauty using the architecture and cities in which we live and visit. “My work develops as I build experience with those cities and I believe I create a direct and tangible feel. I start by drawing in sketchbooks which are filled with continuous marks, responding to my subject in a quick and portable way. “The sketches are then transformed into paintings that register and transcend my subject matter in a very fluid and expressive way. At that point my paintings become subsequent responses where feelings, reinterpretation and imagination are applied.” The exhibition, entry to which is free, is being staged at Residence No 1 in Royal William Yard and runs from Saturday September 21 to Sunday October 6 from 10am to 6pm daily. Edward’s meet the artist ‘live studio’ will be taking place between September 21 and Wednesday September 25 from 10.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm. Trevor said that around 60 original paintings and up to 30 sketches will be featured in the exhibition, with prices ranging from £160 to more than £2000.

Spotting the early signs of dementia in a loved one How many times have you gone upstairs to fetch something and forgotten what is was you wanted? It’s no wonder with the busy lives we lead today if we become distracted, preoccupied

or simply overloaded with things to remember and priorities to juggle. But how can you distinguish between a harmless lapse of memory and an underlying medical condition like dementia?

Waypoints care home manager Tessa Marriott advises on when to seek a professional view in the first of a series of a special Plymouth Magazine features aimed at informing and reassuring.

There are different types of dementia and these can cause a range of symptoms and changes in the behaviour or character of a person. For example tasks or experiences which the person may have done without any concerns or hesitation may become a source of anxiety or agitation. You may notice the person gets frustrated, flair up or become aggressive when they would have not reacted in that way in the past. Shy people can become gregarious or act inappropriately. These changes can happen in abrupt noticeable steps, take the form of a gradual decline or be erratic with ‘good days and bad days’ over months or years. This is the time to seek professional medical advice from the family doctor. Suggesting to a loved one that a medical opinion should be sought can be challenging but early diagnosis of dementia can make a positive difference. At the mention of dementia some may dismiss it as nonsense or it may cause distress or fear. There is no ‘one approach to fit all’ and only those carers, relatives or friends closest to that person will best know how to proceed. There is increasingly more information and support available to offer people choice and enable them to make informed decisions about medical treatments, practical matters like finance and benefits, and planning of longer term care.

For those without anyone to help them, there are independent advocates who take on the role of a family member and provide impartial support. What cannot be emphasised enough is that early diagnosis can make a

There are treatments which can slow down the progress and impact of the disease. Decisions about future care can be taken whilst the person with dementia is able to consider and make informed choices and ensure their family and the medical professionals know their wishes.

skills group helps businesses with apprenticeship programmes Apprenticeship programmes run by the Plymouthbased Skills Group have helped thousands of youngsters to secure employment in recent years. The Skills Group, which has its headquarters at Langage Business Park in Plympton is one of the largest independent training providers in the country, and one of the very few acknowledged as Outstanding by Ofsted. Every year, the Skills Group provides apprenticeship and training programmes for hundreds of young people in a wide range of skills and crafts. Previously known as PSC Training and Development Ltd., the company works in partnership with schools, colleges and careers services to determine the right level of training for young people.

Skills Group currently offers apprenticeship training in construction, care and early years, business, hairdressing, engineering and automotive and earlier this year launched a sport and leisure apprenticeship scheme. It has introduced a 16 week pre-apprenticeship programme which combines work experience with classroom training. Mark Boulting said: “The programme provides youngsters with practical experience in their chosen industry as well as giving them knowledge of first aid, health and safety, interview techniques and other basic skills.” Two organisations which are partnering with the Skills Group on the pre-apprenticeship programme are The Oasis Leisure Centre at the Elfordleigh Hotel and Little Nippers Childcare in Plympton.

It also works closely with around 500 employers – from sole traders to large multi-nationals – guiding them on their specific apprenticeship training requirements and ensuring they exceed minimum standards and levels.

Francis Simons, manager of the Oasis Leisure Centre said that the pre-apprenticeship programme would involve potential apprentices working two shifts a week at the centre.

The company was formed in 1994 following a management buy-out of the previously Government-run Plymouth Skills Centre. Two of the management team - John Boulting and Jeff Rowlands are still directors of the Skills Group. John’s son Mark Boulting joined the company 12 years ago after completing an MBA and is now managing director of the Skills Group.

Mark Boulting of The Skills Group

The company has achieved rapid growth in the last decade, increasing eightfold in size. It now employs over 100 people and has training centres in Exeter, Newton Abbot, along with Drakes Court at Langage and the HQ Building in Union Street.

“It will give them real hands-on experience of what working in a leisure centre involves and also learn about the wide number of career opportunities that exist in the sector. People can start out as a leisure assistant and then gain qualifications that will enable them to develop specific skills, such as a personal trainer, sports coach or swimming instructor.”

Francis said that even though he studied sports coaching at university it took him several years to secure a job in the leisure industry. “I wish something like the Skills Group apprenticeship programme had been around for me. I would have jumped at the chance to gain work experience in the industry.”

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING? Francis Simons and Dom Richards at the Oasis Leisure Centre

He said that he and his colleagues were working closely with Skills Group sport and leisure training coordinator Lee Harris. “Lee has been particularly helpful,” said Francis. “We are developing a mutually beneficial relationship and Skills Group can definitely help to enhance the skills and qualifications of the people who work with me here at the Oasis Leisure Centre.” One of the centre’s newest recruits is Dom Richards. He joined recently as a leisure assistant and is already lined up for a number of training programmes with the Skills Group which will enhance his career opportunities. “I know I have got a lot to learn, but with the help of the Skills Group and support from my manager Francis I can look forward to an exciting career in the leisure industry.” At Little Nippers Childcare in Plympton, owner Caroline Paternotte-Chilton is also working with the Skills Group on the pre-apprenticeship programme and already has nearly half her 19-strong staff undergoing training with the Skills Group. Caroline, who took over the former Bambinos Nursery in September last year, said: “We have worked with a number of training agencies in the past but are now solely involved with the Skills Group. “We are looking to take on more trainees and the Skills Group will be helping us to identify potential candidates who can then gain work experience with us for a number of weeks before starting an apprenticeship.

“The Skills Group team are extremely helpful and are working with our staff to help them gain NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in early years childcare. “They can also provide specific additional training for staff to improve their individual skills if required.” Mark Boulting added: “Over the last few years we have helped literally thousands of young people to start their careers through apprenticeships. Contrary to what a lot of parents and young people think, at any one time there are scores of apprenticeship training opportunities available locally. “It’s not unusual for us to have more than 100 vacancies for young people on our books, everything from trainee hairdressers to trainee estate agents,” said Mark. Mark said that while apprenticeship numbers were beginning to fall in other parts of the country, Plymouth and the South West continued to see growth. “Plymouth is one of the best performing cities in the country in terms of apprenticeships and we want to see that position maintained,” he added. We are grateful to his widow Valerie and son Mark for all the help and information they have provided,” added Jon. “We have not only focused on the hotel itself, but also the surrounding area of Millbay and reflected how that, too, has changed over the years,” said Jon. “The brochure will also record the events we have organised to celebrate the 150th anniversary and also give a glimpse of our future plans for the hotel.” Local historian Chris Robinson is writing a foreword for the publication and assisting with other aspects of the content. “We’re delighted that Chris is involved as he can put the Duke’s history into the context of the city’s progress over the last century and half,” added Jon.

The commemorative brochure is one of the ways in which the hotel’s anniversary is being marked. A number of special events have been held during 2013 to celebrate the milestone and also to raise money for three local charities - Jeremiah’s Journey, St Luke’s Hospice and Plymouth-based Friends and Families of Special Children.

Jon said: “There has been lots of interest and response to our special events and tickets for ‘Not the Beatles’ night are already selling fast. We’re looking forward to a very special night.”

debbie’s treatment was so good she joined the staff! I’m sure we all remember that advert for a famous electric razor.... ‘I liked it so much I bought the company.’ Well, for me, it was a similar experience with the Hyde Park Clinic. Soon after it opened, a friend recommended it and I was a client at the clinic for 12 months. I visited the clinic for my little indulgence – smoothing those annoying wrinkles around my eyes with a smidgen of Botox. I always enjoyed my visits to Hyde Park Clinic. The atmosphere, the bubbly staff and the general ambience of the clinic always made me think that if I ever wanted to work again that would be where I would want to go. I had become firm friends with the staff who worked at the clinic and, lo and behold, a receptionist vacancy became available.

by Debbie Campbell receptionist at Hyde Park Clinic

After 16 years, first living abroad and then bringing up my three children, I had not been employed for a long, long time. But I jumped at the chance to join the team and was delighted to be appointed to the post three years ago. The work at Hyde Park Clinic is more like a day out with friends, and of course I’ve had the opportunity to try the treatments that are available at the clinic. The attitude at the clinic is to improve what you have with a tweak here and there and to maintain a healthy glowing appearance with friends and family seeing a healthy youthful me and not a manufactured Debbie.

With the laser hair removal available at the clinic I no longer have the unsightly tell tale nick marks from whizzing over my legs too quickly with the razor when in a hurry. How great to just moisturise them before baring them to the world! The Arasys treatment has been fantastic for toning the dimples of cellulite that, no matter how shapely your legs are, ripple in the places that you have on show in the summer sun, and those of you who know me know I’m always in Polzeath! In the winter when my natural tan has faded I take advantage of our fabulous beautician Louise who keeps my legs looking great through the dull months with our Sienna Spray tan system. No streaks here – we are not bacon! Of course she is also marvellous for pampering your feet and toes with wonderful pedicures. If you’re reading this and thinking ‘But this is just an advert’, come to Hyde Park Clinic, meet us all, have a free consultation for any of our treatments and you’ll be surprised at what we can achieve and how pleasurable the experience is. Maybe one day you’ll even join the team here – just like me! For more information visit www.hydeparkclinic.co.uk or call 01752 292960

Heat the oil and butter in a 23cm ovenproof frying pan. Add the sugar and balsamic and season with salt and pepper. Put the garlic bulb cut side up in the middle. Scatter over the marjoram and arrange the tomatoes cut side down around the garlic. Cook for 5 mins. Sprinkle over the breadcrumbs. Cut the pastry to the same size as the pan, lay it over the top of the tomatoes and tuck in the edges. Brush with beaten egg. Bake in a 220°C oven for 20 mins, until golden and crisp. Remove from the oven and leave to sit for five minutes. Run a knife around the edge of the pastry to loosen it, place a plate over the top and tip it out. You may need to do some tomato patching, depending on how nonstick your pan is. Cut into slices, squeezing out the garlic to spread over the tarte.

dave and justin business success Two friends who took the plunge to launch their own restaurant in Plymouth’s city centre are celebrating a successful first year’s trading. David Cossar and Justin Meaney gave up high-profile jobs to open JD’s Grill in Derry’s Cross at the end of August last year. David had previously been general manager at the Tanner brothers’ Barbican Kitchen restaurant for six years, while Justin had held senior posts at the Elfordleigh Hotel, Golf & Country Club, including director of operations. The two met originally at the Elfordleigh Hotel eight years ago when David was food and beverage manager and Justin was bar manager. “We often talked about going into business together,” said David, “but it was always about finding the right premises in the right location at the right price.” The premises in Derry’s Cross was previously a Chinese restaurant, but had been empty for several years. Backed by a bank and their own funds, the pair took over the lease in June last year and opened less than three months later. David said: “We had to completely rip out the premises, but managed to do all the refurbishment ourselves with the help of friends and family. We only needed suppliers for the flooring and furniture.”

Justin Meaney and Dave Cossar of JD’s Grill...celebrating first year success

Justin added: “People thought we were stupid launching a new restaurant in the middle of a recession, but we have been pleased with the way the first year has gone. It has been lots of hard work and long hours - but we certainly don’t regret it. “We have a growing clientele with many customers coming back time and time again. Like a lot of the eateries in the city centre we have suffered a little with the Theatre Royal being closed – so we are expecting pre-theatre business to really take off again in September when it re-opens with the sell-out production of War Horse.” David said: “We’re also looking forward to the return of tens of thousands of students in September as JD’s is definitely popular with the student community.” The American influenced 90-seater grill is a real magnet for meat lovers with no less than 45 choices of speciality burgers on the menu, a selection of ribs, wings and steaks - including a 40 ounce ribeye for customers with a huge appetite! All JD’s Grill burgers are freshly made on site each day using the best locally sourced beef, mixed with a secret recipe of herbs and spices. Unlike many other restaurants all burgers are at half pound, rather than quarter pounders. Customers can choose from an extensive selection of toppings and can also build their own burger by selecting the topping and side of their choice. Justin, who oversees the kitchen brigade, said that the most popular burger dishes were the Hoofs and Trotters (1/2lb Burger topped with slow roasted pulled pork, BBQ Sauce and melted cheese) and the Mexicana (1/2lb Burger, topped with nachos, melted cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and Jalapenos peppers.) Mains start at £10.95 and there is a good selection of starters priced from £4.95 for spicy chicken wings to garlic king prawn skewer at £4.95 with a number of shared dishes and mixed platters for two or four people. Home made desserts and sundaes are available from £4.95 and there is a selection of American beers and wines to choose from.

cooking up at jd’s grill Families are welcome at JD’s Grill: there’s a children’s menu and youngsters under 10 eat for free when accompanied by a paying adult. Two course lunch and early evening menus are available for £9.95 (three courses £12.95). Many of the dishes on the menu – including burgers – are gluten free and other special dietary requirements can also be catered for with notice. David said: “From all our years’ experience in the hospitality sector we know that the keys to success are good food, good value for money and good service. Serving good food on a consistent basis is the biggest challenge and we have an excellent kitchen team led by Justin.”

Dave Cossar with one of JD’s mountainous burgers

Justin said: “We definitely offer man-sized portions and we have lots of male customers, particularly groups out for the evening or celebrating a birthday or special occasion.

a lot so far,” said Justin. To celebrate their first anniversary on August 31 JD’s are aiming to break the British record for the biggest-ever burger, weighing in at a mighty 22 pounds!!!

“But we also serve lots of ladies – again groups on a night out or celebrating – as well as plenty of families.”

Having recently been signed up as suppliers of burgers for the Plymouth Argyle food outlets, the pair have their sights set on future expansion with an outdoor events operation and at least one other restaurant in the South West.

JD’s Grill is also a place for challenges. There are three eating challenges for customers to take on, the most popular of which is appropriately called The Wings of Fire. Customers are challenged to eat 10 fiercely hot wings in 10 minutes. “Most give up after the first wing,” said Justin. Then there’s the Goliath: eat two one pound burgers, two pounds of fries and a pound of coleslaw in 15 minutes. Or the Titanic - four pounds of ice cream, also in 15 minutes. Customers who beat the challenge get their meal for free. “We haven’t given away

“We believe we have created a unique offering which can prove popular in other locations as well as having franchise potential,” said David. JD’s Grill is open lunchtimes on Tuesdays to Fridays from 12 noon to 2.30pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 3pm. Evening opening is from 5pm to 9pm Sundays to Fridays and 5pm to 10pm Saturdays and Sundays. JD’s Grill, 17 Derrys Cross, Plymouth Tel 01752 601605 www.jds-grill.co.uk

ocean city Come and see what we’re all about! Call: 07760467857

Plymouth’s Ocean City Festival in September is a landmark event designed to reinforce the city’s reputation as Britain’s Ocean City. The 13-day event between September 9 and 22 will take place in a range of venues across the city including The Barbican, Sutton Harbour, The Hoe, Plymouth University and the Royal William Yard. The festival is designed to offer an exciting programme of events to attract residents, visitors, scientists and adventurers alike to explore the city and discover all it has to offer. The event also aims to raise awareness, nationally and internationally, of Plymouth’s role as a leading UK ocean city, for research, leisure, heritage and local produce. The spectacular festival of seafood including chef demonstrations, live music, entertainment, aquatic leisure and cultural events returns for a second year to celebrate Plymouth and its links to the sea. The event aims to attract thousands of visitors to Plymouth’s historic quayside areas and to highlight the city’s standing in ocean culture, business, science and education. New events for this year’s festival include the Royal Navy Freedom of the City Parade, the launch of the River Tamar Project, Influencing the River, a major cultural event exploring the future potential of this significant waterway in the South West, and Resurgam, an interactive gaming experience featuring a supernatural action-adventure movie with participants at the heart of the story. History, digital technology and theatre are integrated to create a unique gaming experience that immerses players sending them out on a citywide treasure hunt to find the magical ‘Pearl of Plymouth’. There will also be a children’s parade through the streets of the Barbican on Saturday September 21. The festival will bring the world under the waters of Plymouth Sound to life with a colourful programme of events and activities for all the family. Key events will include: Plymouth Seafood Festival, September 20 t0 22 A three-day celebration highlighting the city’s enduring relationship with the sea and its traditional fishing industry, as well as its growing reputation as a food lover’s haven. Showcasing the fantastic quality of seafood available in Plymouth, both local and celebrity chefs will demonstrate creating a range of mouth-watering dishes from the catch of the day. Ecover Blue Mile challenge, September 14 and 15 The Blue Mile challenge is a one-mile timed, open water swim which takes place in the waters of Plymouth Sound. Those not taking part can cheer on the swimmers from the Hoe. Organisers are expecting more than 500 competitors to take part including a large contingent from Plymouth’s Leander Swimming Club. The event also includes kayaking, stand-up paddling and an aqua triathlon. It is hoped to raise £50,000 for the Marine Conservation Society. Olympic Gold Medal canoeist Tim Baillie will be among competitors in the Ecover Blue Mile Challenge, part of this year’s Ocean City Festival. Like last year, Tim will be tackling the stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) and sit-on-top kayak disciplines over the one mile course on the Saturday of the two-day event on September 14 and 15.

The Tavistock event forms part of the choir’s 22-venue tour of the UK and features a compelling programme in which the first half illuminates the spiritual drama and splendour of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Rachmaninov’s Nunc Dimittis is a highlight, while in the second, songs of joy, humour and nostalgia convey the exceedingly rich folk culture of Ukraine. UK tour organiser Margaret Rolle said: “For those who have not heard them before, the Boyan Ensemble is known for its mastery of vocal technique, with delicately floated pianissimos, breathtakingly brilliant fortes and a bass resonance unique to this internationally acclaimed male choir. Superb soloists feature throughout a programme of spine-tingling propensity.” Boyan’s members are drawn from the Ukraine’s top professional male choir, the Kiev-based Revutsky Academic Male Capella. Organised by Plymouth YMCA and the British Heart Foundation, the fun run is staged again at Saltram House, Plympton on September 8, the event provides a breath-taking course around the estate and a great opportunity to have a fun day out helping to save lives. The cross-country track will lead runners through beautiful parkland, woodland and along the estuary. Tony Fuqua, project manager for Plymouth YMCA, said: “Last year some 300 people took part with many participants sporting their favourite super hero costumes. It was a great day and the costumes made it such an enlightening and entertaining event. “Each year a number of heart attack survivors complete the event to show their support for our local services and the research carried out by the British Heart Foundation. The true super heroes will hopefully they inspire many others to come out for the day and get their blood pumping for good causes. We hope to see you on the day!” Half of the proceeds raised will go towards local cardiac rehabilitation services and work with young people delivered by Plymouth YMCA and half will go towards the British Heart Foundation Mending Broken Hearts Appeal. A donation to the National Trust will also be made from the proceeds for their invaluable assistance and use of their estate. The fun begins with registration from 8.30am and the race starts at 10am. Registration fees are: £10 single; £32 family/group of four Online registration and postal registration is open until Wednesday September 4. Registration on the day is £12 per person and £40 per family/group of 4. Registration fees helps cover the cost of staging the event but sponsorship will save lives. In 1983, Monika Kinley and her partner Victor Musgrave invited their artist friends to lend works for a small show in their new London home. The show

was called ‘Artists Make Faces’ and 30 years on this exhibition is a realisation of a long held idea to create a show on this theme in a public gallery. It will feature a distinctive and personal selection of works from public art galleries and collections, including Arts Council England, Tate and the Whitworth. So many artists both past and present are concerned with the face. It gives us our identity and acts as a mirror for our feelings. In this show, the selected artists use it as a canvas, playing with it or agonising over it rather than creating a straightforward image of a recognisable person. The term ‘abstract’ can mean many things – to remove, to summarise, to be difficult to understand, to be impersonal – all of which can apply to abstraction in art. It can refer to art that has an object or landscape as its subject or starting point, or it can use forms that have no source from the visible world. This exhibition will focus on abstraction from our collection, including work by Patrick Heron, Ian Davenport, and Justin Knowles. It will also include previously unseen footage of Patrick Heron in his studio from the late 1950s. the plymouth magazine

property matters

good news as property Property prices in Plymouth rose during the first half of the year and look set to continue moving upwards. That’s the view of Darren Lawson, managing director of Mansbridge & Balment, one of the city’s leading independent estate agents. “All the key economic indicators are more positive at the moment and this has certainly led to increased confidence in the property market,” said Darren. “We saw property prices in Plymouth rise by between two and three per cent in the first six months of 2013 and if current conditions remain I would expect prices to have risen by five per cent overall by the end of the year.”

He said that Mansbridge & Balment had enjoyed a 35 per cent increase in sales in the six months to the end of June, compared with the same period last year. “The first quarter started strongly, mainly because of the increased sales activity at the end of 2012 and we then saw an even stronger second quarter with May, in particular, proving to be exceptionally busy. “So far this year we have achieved an average of 98 per cent of the asking price of properties we have marketed which is several percentage points ahead of last year. “To achieve this high average figure we have actually seen some properties selling for more than the asking price,” he added. “This has not happened for a number of years. “At Mansbridge & Balment, our abortive sale rates have dropped to below 10 per cent which is extremely low, with sellers changing their minds sadly accountable for a fair number of these. Although it has improved, the lending landscape is still greatly inhibited from where it was five to 10 years ago. Nevertheless low abortive sales rates are an excellent indicator of both buyer confidence and supply and demand levels”. Darren elaborated: “In a weak market where confidence is low it takes very little to knock a sale off course. Typical examples might include a minor defect picked up by a surveyor or an old planning issue pertaining to a conservatory, causing a buyer to withdraw or attempt to re-negotiate. “The lack of available good quality homes, along with greater confidence also plays a key role in the improved statistics as buyers are less confident in the likelihood of their finding a better alternative should they walk away from the transaction. “There are plenty of buyers looking for properties at the moment – including first time buyers – but there is still a shortage of properties coming on to the market to meet this demand. “This has led to some realistically-priced properties selling very quickly – sometimes within hours of coming on to the market.” Darren said that the recent rise in property prices followed more positive signs not only in the property sector, but also in the economy as a whole. “Mortgage lending is up, house prices have, by and large, recovered to somewhere close to the market highs of the middle noughties and there is certainly more of a feel good factor around right now. “However, many people in the market are concerned that current optimism could lead to rapid property price inflation, which in turn could lead to the boom and bust patterns that have wreaked havoc in the past.” He said that homeowners who want to sell should not over-value their property, but should be realistic and sensible. “There is always a temptation to over-price and we have seen examples of other agents following this route. But the downside is that if you don’t get the pricing right, properties can remain unsold for long periods and in some cases eventually sell at a lower figure. “It would appear that there is an uneasy balance at the moment between the attitudes of sellers and buyers which is ironic given that many of those engaged in the property market fall into both camps! “For example, we’ve placed a couple of properties of fine quality, and in much desired locations on the market at prices that hindsight has proven to have been

plymouth prices rise ambitious. In these cases, our clients have been inundated with viewings, but have still only sold for a fair market price in line with our original advice. Therefore it’s taken a lot longer, and arguably more intrusion to achieve the same result. “Buyers are definitely more savvy and astute these days and are not prepared to pay more than a property is realistically worth. They want value for Darren Lawson of Mansbridge & Balment money, whilst they, and sellers alike seem to appreciate that the market is much improved and that prices have been creeping up.”. “Everybody can access market intelligence through property websites and it is quite easy to find out what the average price is for a particular property in a particular street.”

Darren said that the upturn in the market reflected the fact that more attractive mortgage products were now generally available. “Banks and building societies are clearly more confident in the market now and there are plenty of good 90 per cent mortgages available at sensible rates. “The rates are even more attractive for buyers who have a 20 or 25 per cent deposit.” He said that the recent marked increase in mortgage approvals was partly due to the continued strength of the buy-to-let market.

let us clean your oven… so you don’t have to!

Darren said: “There is still plenty of appetite for buy to let as yields remain attractive whilst the prospect of capital growth has returned for the first time in nearly a decade. Many people see investment in property as a way of securing a pension in the future.” Darren added: “The culture of home ownership in the UK remains strong and the Government’s Help to buy scheme is undoubtedly having an impact. Until now the scheme has only applied to new build homes, but next year it will be extended to include all property. This should undoubtedly stimulate even more buyer activity in the market. Darren concluded: “A healthy market requires a fine balance with first time buyers as its foundations from which it takes its strength. Allowing it to become over priced is akin to cutting the umbilical chord prematurely, thus denying the market its oxygen. We’ll have to see how this initiative plays out, and what affect it has, but even without this initiative, we have definitely turned a corner and are enjoying a far more buoyant climate”.

realistic approach is the key to success Business is booming for a local home improvements company. Realistic Home Improvements has seen turnover increase dramatically in the last 12 months as the company has continued to establish a reputation for high quality products and customer service. Ryan Barrett took over the company in 2009 and has overseen continued growth and expansion during the last four years. It now has a network of showrooms in Plymouth, Saltash and Exeter and is able to serve customers across the whole of Devon and Cornwall. “We opened our new Milehouse showroom last year and have just added Exeter to the network,” said Ryan, who has more than 20 years experience in the industry. He has recruited more staff on the sales and administration side of the business and is about to add a third installation team. “While many of the big national companies are closing branches to focus on online sales, we have opened new showrooms because we believe customers want to see and touch the product before they decide to buy,” said Ryan. The company’s ethos is to provide the best quality products at competitive prices and to ensure complete customer satisfaction. “I’m passionate about ensuring our customers are not just satisfied with our work, but delighted with it. There are dozens of double glazing companies out there offering knockdown prices, but we want to be seen as the Waitrose or BMW of the industry and be recognised for quality first and foremost,” said Ryan. “Our customers matter more than anything and we go the extra mile to ensure that we provide the best possible service. The level of referrals and recommendations we receive from satisfied customers underlines the fact that our commitment to customer service is really working,” said Ryan.

It is an approved installer for Vevo, one of the country’s most respected double glazing manufacturers, supplies and installs solid laminate timber composite doors from the Solidor collection and has recently added a high specification range of Ultraframe conservatories to its product portfolio. Ryan said: “Our new range of high specification conservatories are a step change from the traditional styles. Unlike many conservatories which are too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, the new Ultraframe products are more like an extension than a conservatory. “They feature a unique double roof system, triple glazed doors and windows, specially devised perimeter ceiling and customised corner heating panels all of which combine to create a comfortable and attractive addition to a property. “These are warm in the winter and cool in the summer, so can be used all year round, just like an extension. “They typically use half the heat energy of a similar sized conservatory and little more energy than a traditionally-built extension. “We have already installed several of these top quality conservatories and are confident that they will appeal to a growing number of homeowners who are looking to add an extra room to their property.

energyy matters

green deal could mean big energy savings for plymouth homeowners Homeowners in Plymouth can now upgrade their heating systems and potentially save thousands of pounds, thanks to a new Government initiative.

There are a number of ways that people can take advantage of the Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation (ECO) fund, depending on their individual circumstances.

The government’s Green Deal and ECO funding programme is designed to help homewners to replace inefficient boilers and heating systems.

Under the Green Deal, the government will help households make energy saving improvements to their properties and pay for it using the savings made from their energy bills. Homeowners can borrow money to upgrade boilers and various other energy saving improvements.

Plymouth based Moorheat Plumbing & Heating are working in partnership with Green Deal and ECO funding providers to replace old, faulty and inefficient heating systems with highly efficient ‘A’ rated boilers. With rising energy costs and recent cold winters, now could be the perfect time to take advantage of the Green Deal and ECO Funding, which will be the biggest home energy programme of modern times, according to Richard Down of Moorheat. Richard explained: “This is an interesting time for homeowners and tenants in Plymouth and across the UK. With the government hoping to improve the energy efficiency of 26 million homes by 2030, the Green Deal and ECO scheme allow households to add value to their homes by adding energy efficient measures, such as installing a new boiler, whilst reducing heating bills and ultimately making properties fit for the future with no upfront costs or free with the extra help of ECO funding. “The Green Deal will also significantly contribute towards reducing carbon emissions and support the UK’s 2050 emission reduction target of producing 80 per cent less carbon than in the 1990s.” Richard said that anyone can apply for the Green Deal as homeowners, landlords and tenants can all benefit from the Green Deal and ECO funding.

Unlike some energy efficiency grants, it’s not just for those on lower incomes (through more help is available if you are.) This aspect of the Green Deal has been billed as a loan which may put some people off – but Richard Down pointed out that households only pay back what they are predicted to save on bills each month, so effectively there’s no net cost. Richard said: “If your energy bills are £1000 a year now, your energy bills, plus Green Deal repayments will never be more than that – sometimes less. So there’s no net increase cost to you and your home is more efficient. “What’s more, your energy provider makes the repayments for you via your electricity bills so there are no monthly loan repayments to worry about and means you should pay, at most, the same as you do now for your utilities, until the loan is paid off, then an even bigger benefit will be felt. “If you move house and are no longer paying the property’s electricity bill, responsibility for the Green Deal repayments pass to the new bill payer. “The golden rule is that the cost of the improvement works should not exceed the amount you save on your energy bill. For example, if Moorheat fit a new boiler

He said that anyone interested in the Green Deal can contact Moorheat for more information. They will arrange for a Green Deal assessor to survey the property and prepare a report on the home’s performance and potential improvements. If the expected energy savings are greater than the cost of improvements, the Green Deal loan is authorised and work can begin. A fee is payable for the Green Deal assessment (usually around £150) but provides a report that highlights any potential energy saving improvements and how much you could save by implementing them. The government is keen to make the Green Deal a success so has put £125 million into cashback for the first adopters of the scheme – on a boiler upgrade this could be up to £270. The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Funding A growing number of people don’t have money to adequately heat their homes. The Government is addressing this issue with the Energy Company Obligation – often shortened to ECO. It’s a scheme that will help UK households lower their energy bills by funding energy efficiency improvements worth around £1.3 billion every year. Under the recently launched scheme that will run alongside the Green Deal, installers such as Moorheat will have funds provided by the big energy companies, such as British Gas, EDF and EON, to cover the costs of a free boiler. If you qualify you could have an ‘A’ rated energy efficient boiler installed in your home completely free of charge. The funding covers the full cost of all materials and labour required for the boiler installation, as well as a free survey to establish whether you qualify. Who can claim ECO funding? It is quite complicated for households to work out if they are eligible for ECO funding - it depends on what measures the house needs, where you live and if you receive any benefits. Green Deal providers can provide advice on eligibility for ECO money, and it is also also advisadble to contact the Energy Saving Trust for more details. Visit www. energysavingstrust.org.uk to find out more. How can Moorheat help? Only installers who have PAS2030 and Green Deal Installer Certification can undertake installations under the Green Deal and ECO scheme. Moorheat have been subject to on-site inspections and have put the necessary quality management systems required in place to ensure an efficient and professional service of the highest standard is provided to consumers are all times.

Having spent my entire working life in or around the travel industry, I am fortunate enough to have visited many countries throughout the world either on holiday or as part of an organised promotional trip with a tour operator or tourist office. Until a few years ago, Italy was one of the few Mediterranean countries that I hadn’t visited and I am now beginning to realise what a wonderfully unique place I have been missing out on all these years! Most people who have enjoyed a taste of Italy are likely to have visited on a cruise stop to see Florence, Pisa or the most popular destination of all – Rome. These destinations were in fact the first places I visited in Italy as part of a Mediterranean cruise. Our excursions included a full day tour of Rome, which was fascinating, but very tiring and a train ride in to Tuscany to visit the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Seeing parts of Italy does, however, leave you wanting more, so this summer I decided to take a short family holiday on the Amalfi coast and stay in the beautiful resort of Positano.

Having enjoyed many wonderful meals over the years in Plymouth’s namesake restaurant on Mayflower Street, I had always wanted to visit Positano. The pictures that adorn the restaurant’s walls had given us a glimpse of what this small coastal town had to offer and why the owners felt so passionately about the area. My first task was to make the travel arrangements, which proved to be fairly simple as there are now several weekly flights from Bristol to Naples throughout the summer months flying with Easyjet and Thomson. As the Easyjet flights in particular are twice weekly, travellers are not tied to weekly or fortnightly stays and have the opportunity to take short breaks and long weekends. Our trip lasted four nights travelling out on a Tuesday and returning on a Saturday. The transfer to our small hotel in Positano took almost 90 minutes, but the time flew by as the surrounding scenery was breathtaking and the winding roads

provided some slightly hair-raising moments! Positano is not so much a town, but a cliff with houses on. It is infinitely photogenic with many colourful buildings filling every available space. The lack of any spare flat land means that it is obviously very difficult to find hotels with swimming pools in Positano; there are a few but they charge a huge premium. Our hotel was only a short walk uphill from the pebbly beach and provided us with a perfect base from which to explore and access most of the resort. People with walking difficulties should be warned, however, that due to the steep incline, there are many steps in Positano, which could be an obstacle if your accommodation is located too far up the hill. Although this can be a disadvantage, it is all part of the character of the town and the buildings dramatically perched in to the cliff side simply epitomize the beauty of Positano. I am sure that once you take in the scenery and atmosphere, you will fall in love with Positano and its seemingly unique way of life. There is a good selection of restaurants here but be careful to check prices; although Italian food is quite reasonable in the UK, restaurants in the Amalfi coast resorts can be expensive. Always ask for the local wine and beer as imported brands will often carry a large supplement. From the harbour side, you can take the hydrofoil to Capri, Amalfi or Sorrento so, if you do not particularly fancy hiring a car, exploring other parts of the region is still easy. The local shops here are quite ‘touristy’ so a serious shopping spree might not be on the cards, but I would be surprised if you didn’t return with a bottle or two of Limoncello, their local liquor drink! During our second day we ventured in to the town of Sorrento, a far more commercialised tourist resort and much bigger town than Positano. Sorrento has its own unique charm and character, but due to the fact that it is considerably easier to access than Positano, it caters for a wider range of tourists. Hotels here are significantly larger and have facilities that hotels in Positano can only dream of. In Sorrento you will find a much greater choice of restaurants, numerous English pubs and many more shops….if that’s what you are looking for. Sorrento’s central location, facilities and more efficient transport links make it a good base from which to explore the peninsula and it is certainly still a more peaceful place to stay than the decidedly chaotic nearby city of Naples.

stunning scenery, culture and the blue grotto make it a memorable break

travel matters

• continued from previous page The most popular excursions from Sorrento are undoubtedly to the historic ruins of Pompeii and again to Capri, which I’ll discuss later. Sorrento isn’t renowned for its beaches; the main beach of Marina Grande has black volcanic sand so I would recommend that you head for the private beaches or ask a local boatman to drop you off at one of the many secluded bays along the coast. On day three, we headed further south along the coast to the town of Amalfi. We parked just beside the port and the bus terminus which was an extremely busy area dominated by a statue of Flavio Gioia (the inventor of the compass) this was very ordinary, it wasn’t until we passed through the Porta Marinara gate leading to the centre of town that we realised why it was such a popular tourist destination. The main Piazza del Duomo offers a wonderful selection of shops and restaurants, but this is overshadowed by an immense staircase leading the Duomo Cathedral. The many steps were crowded with tourists taking photographs looking down on to the Piazza and the central fountain. We then travelled on the beautiful, but winding coastal road to Ravello, yet another stunning town built high up in the hillside with breathtaking views of the coast below. Much smaller than Amalfi but boasting even more character and some top quality hotels, this was a perfect place for a stroll and a late lunch in one of its quality establishments. Ravello has attracted scores of writers and musicians, including Wagner, Liszt, Andre Gide and DH Lawrence, who wrote part of Lady Chatterley’s Lover here. Full of history, Ravello is a must for the culture vultures but again, due to its steep inclines and steps, it is not really suitable for the less mobile. Our final day involved a wonderful trip by hydrofoil from Positano to the island

Above: The impressive Duomo Cathedral in Amalfi and (below) Anthony enjoying a trip to the Blue Grotto

of Capri. At a cost of 35 Euros per person return, it appears on the face of it an expensive journey but I thought it was worth every penny! The journey takes just over 30 minutes and the island is also easily accessible from nearby Sorrento and Naples. Capri is very chic and boasts all the top designer stores, which cater not only for the day trippers but also guests of some of the most luxurious hotels in the Mediterranean. Capri town centre is a pedestrianized zone, making it much more comfortable to stroll around but beware of the porters in their little electric carts; they sometimes appear from nowhere at speeds which will test your reactions! The streets are spotlessly clean with perfect paths, ceramic street names and a regularly repainted church, which feels almost like a symbol of how proud the locals are of their polished town. If anyone has visited Capri before, I think one of the most memorable sights are the open-top taxis with an awning fitted rather than the traditional car roof. We left Capri town and hired one of these taxis to take us to Capri’s most famous landmark, the ‘Blue Grotto’. The journey was filled with breathtaking scenery whilst driving at speed on roads that seemed only wide enough for one car! After a sharp intake of breath on several occasions, we arrived at the Blue Grotto; known locally as the ‘Grotto Azzurra’. Most tourists arrive here by boat from the marina but for us, as lunch was booked in the restaurant directly above the grotto, we went by road. A standard boat trip can take as long as two hours because waiting times to enter the Grotto in peak season can be over an hour. All visitors (in groups of three or four) board a small rowing boat that is pulled by chains through a small gap in the rock into the Grotto. Everyone has to lie down in the boat to enable it to get under the rock and access the grotto with the boatman pulling us through horizontally. I was delighted that we did this trip as the iridescent quality of the blue light inside really does need to be seen to be believed. Apparently, the light is created by the reflection from the blue rock under the water. The atmosphere inside is surreal and the boatman all sing in unison with the sound of their voices echoing and rebounding around the grotto. Entrance for the Grotto was approximately 12 Euros per person but worth every penny. If you are only travelling to Capri on a day trip, check the weather conditions beforehand as strong winds and rough seas can often suspend the access to the grotto. On our last day we departed Positano reflecting on what had been a fantastic short break on the Amalfi coast, an area of Italy that I would definitely return to. In this article, I have found it hard to really describe in full how beautiful this historical part of Italy really is. I certainly feel that if you are reasonably fit and healthy, it should be up there on your ‘must see’ list of destinations. However, be prepared to pay prices for food and drinks that are more expensive than the UK. I would also recommend doing plenty of research before you go in order to maximise the quality of your stay and be sure to take a good camera – you won’t be disappointed! Happy holidays!

working mum.... I love this topic of debate. It has always interested me and I’ve been in both camps. I have stayed at home full time, I’ve worked part-time and, now the children are at school, I work full-time. I see both sides of the story. When you read around the subject there are very strong and differing views, but for many parents these days, it is not about choosing which side of the divide they stand – there is much more to it than that. September has come round and it’s back to school for another year. For many mums, with their youngest child starting school, it will raise again the ‘stay at home or go to work’ debate. What a time of mixed feelings this can be. Joy (and relief!) as we celebrate the last child going to school and uncertainty and excitement as we begin to think about what we’d like to do. Because for at least five years now, especially for those with older children, we have not been number one; there has always been someone else to think about, whose needs and wants have taken priority. We are full of anticipation of endless hours (the six hour school day feels like an eternity to someone who has had a child permanently with them for several years!) to catch up with all that we’ve wanted to do the last few years, be it housework or hobbies, exercise or entertaining. Or work? (paid work!) But the reality is that your life still revolves around the family. Research continues to

By Liz Crudgington of the Roundabout Day Nursery show that mums still do the majority of the housework and cooking even when both parents are out at work during the day. And of course it is often the mum’s responsibility to ensure that the children are dropped off and picked up from school with everything they need for the day. So your possibilities are reduced to finding work that fits within the school day - and of course that gives you thirteen weeks off during the school holidays! Or you need to find great childcare. Obviously all mums who are working whilst pregnant have had to make this decision already. This debate of working mums versus stay at home mums is not new and will continue to rumble on. And it is a valid one. A child’s early years are formative in their development as are their attachments to key adults around them. The mum’s guilt of leaving her child with someone else, knowing she is missing out on precious experiences.. or the tedium that can be staying at home all day with a baby, day after day, year after year. Both experiences have their good and bad points. Both affect mum and baby. For many however there is no debate, for there is no choice. Some, for all sorts of reasons, have to work. And for them the debate becomes about full-time or part-

debate: or stay at home mum.... time? What childcare? Family, child-minder or nursery? When to return to work? How many hours? Or even how many children can I afford to have? So whether you are about to have your first baby or you are waving your last child off to school, being a parent involves constantly making choices. Choices about childcare, choices about what job to do. There is no single solution. There may be an ideal solution, but there are so many variants that every family unit will be different from the next. We need to work out what our ideal is, taking account of our circumstances, and seek to do the best we can within that. If we require childcare we need to ensure that whoever we give our child to has the

same value system as us and be confident that they will look after them in the way that we would. So think carefully about your options, ask other parents’ opinions, visit child-minders and nurseries. You’ll get a feel for the place that is right for you. Invest your time debating your options and doing your research now because this choice is important. You want it to be the right one.

september is such a colourful September is here and it is definitely my favourite time of the year. The days becoming shorter and nights longer and cooler, the struggle to keep your plants and pots watered or producing or deadheaded has eased. Now is the time the garden is in its most relaxed state and its time to take a step back and enjoy all your hard work, whether it be the colour of all the flowers or harvesting the fruits and vegetables that you have grown. This is the time to enjoy the last throes of flowering from late perennials such as Asters, Sedum and Rudbeckia that will keep the colour going for another two months yet. It is important to make sure they are well staked, as taller varieties are vulnerable to breaking in the rain and wind. These are also an excellent source of nectar and help to extend the season for the bees, butterflies and many other important insects. Asters are fantastic plants that come into their own in September, when the daisy like flowers smother the plants in shades of pink, mauve, purple, blue and white. The flower over a long period and come in a range of sizes, from 30cm (12”) to 1.2m (48”) in height with a spread of 30-60cm (12-24”). They grow well in most soil types, but prefer a position in full to partial shade in welldrained, fertile soil. Rudbeckias and Echinaceas are great late summer flowering perennials that produce large daisy flower heads with yellow petals in Rudbeckia and pink or white in Echinacea which surround

a dark red or black central cone. They are versatile plants and can be grown in a formal herbaceous planting or a naturalistic scheme where its seed heads add further structure and interest. It looks impressive between groups of grasses and other herbaceous perennials. They grow to a height of 60-90cm (2-3’) with a spread of 60cm (2’). Grow them in full sun in free draining soil. Dahlias provide fantastic foliage and colour through late summer and autumn and are a superb addition to any border. There are many cultivars reaching various heights which makes them very versatile. Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff is shorter than some, reaching 90-120cm (3-4’) and can be used to great effect at the front of the border where its dark purple foliage and bright red flowers contrast wonderfully with other plants. Plant in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun for best results. Grasses provide interest to the autumn garden by adding texture, movement and sound. They are very versatile and can be used in mixed borders, herbaceous plantings or in a naturalistic scheme. Pennisetum Rubra is a compact variety of grass and is therefore a better selection for many gardens and pots. From late summer, strong stems emerge with burgundy plumes with plum red leaves that produce a dazzling display, particularly effective against a brightly coloured flowers. Freshen up summer hanging baskets and pots by re-doing them for colour that will last until the spring. Bedding such as violas, pansies and cyclamen will provide colour right the way

month in the garden quicker than dry corms. They are perfect for areas of thin grass under deciduous trees and beneath shrubs in the border. There is still time to plant colchicums and autumn flowering Crocus in the ground or in pots for a burst of late season colour. After the long, and mostly dry summer, lawns will appreciate an organic, slowrelease autumn feed but wait until the ground is moist and growth has started again. This will prevent the grass from scorching on dry days. Happy Gardening!

through with dead-heading and under plant with dwarf flowering spring bulbs such as Narcissus Tete a Tete for spring flowers. Heathers and grasses also make great fillers in winter baskets and tubs. Before autumn truly sets in, roses will need to be sprayed against mildew and hedges neatly clipped. Planting at this time of year will allow perennials and shrubs to settle in before the harsh winter weather, and they will get to off to a good start next spring. The ground is a giant radiator and the heat of a good summer will remain in the ground for some time yet. With the addition Narcissus Tete a Tete can bring a of moisture, this makes the splash of spring colour autumn one of our best planting seasons as the roots of plants put in now will have time to engage with their new home before the onset of winter. This places them in a strong position to survive the months ahead and come away fast next spring. This is a particularly good time of year for planting shrubs and trees, especially those that are evergreen. They will get a good root system in the ground and will be less likely to die of drought in the frozen ground and be hardier to cope with the cold in winter. Although you can wait until November to put bulbs in, I like to get as many bulbs as I can in the ground so they can start growing. They will get their roots growing, giving them a head start for the spring. Good, strong root systems will ensure better and bigger plants in the spring, putting on an impressive show. Buy hardy cyclamen as pot-grown plants as they will establish themselves far
