Ambitious plans to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower It may be several years away but plans for the celebration in 2020 of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower are already taking shape. Representatives from the city’s tourism and leisure sector heard about the plans at a conference in Plymouth in September entitled ‘Are we ready for 2020?’ Adrian Vinken, chair of the Plymouth Culture Board and chief executive of the Theatre Royal, told the conference about the strong links already established with Plymouth Massachusetts following reciprocal visits by representatives from both Plymouths. During their visit earlier this year the Plymouth (England) delegation had met Therese Murray, president of the Massachusetts Senate to brief her on the ambitions and plans for 2020.

She has undertaken to discuss Plymouth’s plans with US Secretary of State John Kerry. Meanwhile Plymouth’s civic leaders and MPs have already met with Prime Minister David Cameron to highlight the importance of 2020 and the opportunity it presents to put Plymouth on the global map. Adrian Vinken revealed the top level objectives for 2020 which – if they come to fruition – arguably represent the most significant event in Plymouth’s history since the Pilgrim Fathers set sail those four centuries ago. You can read about the breathtaking plans for the celebrations on page 14 of this issue. It’s clearly a subject we will be returning to time and time again in the coming months and years. Elsewhere in this issue we report on the Plymouth Respect Festival which promises a weekend of colour, spectacle, music, dance and cultural celebrations in October. Organised by the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council and hosted by Plymouth University the Respect Festival returns after a break last year and is set to be bigger and better than ever before, with something to appeal to all ages and backgrounds. You can read about the event and some of the activities taking place on the centre pages of this edition. Hope you enjoy the latest issue!

uses her talent to raise funds for jeremiah’s journey Plymouth jeweller Nicola Hurst is marking the seventh anniversary of her gallery and workshop in the city by creating seven bespoke pendants for local charity Jeremiah’s Journey. Nicola spent several days during September crafting the silver pendants, which are based on the hot air balloon featured in the Jeremiah’s Journey story. Each of the seven hand-made pendants contains a different stone, making them completely unique.

Jeweller Nicola Hurst working on the pendants which will raise funds for local charity Jeremiah’s Journey

Nicola said: “I’ve always felt that Jeremiah’s Journey is a brilliant charity that does fantastic work in our community. I wanted to do something to mark the seventh anniversary of my shop in Hyde Park but I wanted it to mean something, too – I wanted to give something back to the community. “When I was considering which charity I could do this for, something just struck home with me with Jeremiah’s Journey. Being a mum, you do think ‘what if’.

Jeremiah’s Journey offers professional support for bereaved children and their families in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

“I looked at their website and the picture of the balloon just spoke to me. I thought the balloon would be a lovely thing to do as it’s central to Jeremiah’s Journey.”

The city-based charity sees around 200 families each year, with the support tailored for each one. The story from which the charity takes its name follows the tale of a teddy bear called Jeremiah, who goes on a hot air balloon journey.

The necklace pendants are being auctioned off to coincide with Nicola’s seventh anniversary on October 25.

The story is told to the children to encourage them to maintain a connection with their loved one.

The first is being auctioned at the Jeremiah’s Journey annual ball at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth on October 5. The remaining six will be placed on the charity’s website, where bids will be updated right up to the closing day of the auction. Jeremiah’s Journey chief executive, Joanne Anning, said: “What Nicola is doing is absolutely wonderful. These beautiful pieces will be completely bespoke and will raise some muchneeded funds to help us with our work.” Nicola has been making contemporary jewellery for over 20 years and has had some celebrity commissions – including one from Plymouth diver Tom Daley, who popped into her Hyde Park studio last year to order three bespoke pieces of jewellery depicting the Olympic motif; one each for his mother and his two grandmothers as a memento of his bronze medal success at London 2012. “I really hope we can raise thousands of pounds with the auction of the balloon pendants,” said Nicola. “So the more people who can take part and push up the bids, the better.” Visit Nicola’s website to find out more about her work and the Jeremiah’s Journey website at www. jeremiahsjourney.org.uk during October to make a bid for the pendants.

hollywood choice for formal Evening gowns in 2013 have a classic Hollywood look, according to Bev Saunders of Bee Bee Gowns. “This season’s formal wear definitely has a glamorous look…very elegant and lady like. It’s a return to the ‘old Hollywood’ style and it looks a million dollars,” said Bev. She said that dress lengths have plummeted to the floor and that the trendy colours are reds and blacks with lots of regal jewel tones. “Soft tones of champagne and gold metallics are also popular this season as are gowns with lots of fine ruching and fuller skirts. “We’re coming into the party season now with all the usual charity balls and company get togethers. It’s also a busy time for cruises as people head away from the damp weather of England to the sunshine in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. “The classic styles which we are featuring in our West Park showroom now are proving really popular for all those special occasions.”

art matters

Louise Barnes of Morley Contemporary Art with works by Paul Cain Smith

louise gets to the art of the matter... Morley Contemporary Art was born in October 2006 and has successfully carved a place for itself on the West Country contemporary art scene. It is run by Louise Barnes who has worked in the art world for nearly 20 years. Formerly of Bonhams in London and subsequently Wren Gallery in the Cotswolds, Louise is excited about taking the business into its new phase in Plymouth. She continues to show work by the artists who exhibited regularly with Morley Contemporary during its time in Cornwall, but in a more informal, domestic environment. She holds a small mixed selection of work by various artists which is available to view on-line at www. morleyart.co.uk and at her house by appointment. She also represents a number of artists and offers a bespoke ‘picture-finding’ service where clients can submit their requirements and she can liaise with artists and suggest pieces which might be appropriate.

Morley Contemporary Art also holds small, focused exhibitions periodically.

This could be anything from a one-off small painting to a whole collection to furnish an entire house. The paintings can then be viewed at Morley Contemporary or in the client’s own home at a time - evenings and weekends included - to suit the individual. Louise told me” “When contemplating buying a painting, it is often difficult to visualise what it will

look like in one’s own home, when it is hanging under bright lights in a gallery space surrounded by other works. I offer people the unique opportunity to see paintings in a domestic environment rather than a commercial one, either in my own home or in theirs. My philosophy is providing the personal touch, be it liaising with an artist to find the perfect painting, arranging a commission, or organising the viewing of works in situ in a client’s own home.” Check out the website to see the Morley Contemporary featured artists. They include, Paul Cain Smith whose formative years were spent between Beirut, Lebanon and boarding school in England where he began to draw.

Kerry Cole

Today, with many canvasses under the bridge, he frequently uses the landscape as a vehicle for conveying atmosphere and feelings, and has a wonderful, brave sense of colour. A founder member of the Drawn To The Valley network of Tamar Valley artists, Paul now lives and paints on the Rame Peninsula. In his own words, he observes, feels and absorbs the landscapes around him and then begins to ‘…paint those pictures I couldn’t do if I tried.’ The result is consequently an exciting adventure, each landscape manifesting itself in a different way. Nick Unwin was born in Singapore in 1969 and, as a toddler, travelled overland by Land Rover to the UK with his returning parents, an experience which perhaps kindled his fascination for painting a sense of place. He went on to study at Falmouth and Kingston Schools of Art and has been painting in South East Cornwall and Plymouth for Nick Unwin with some of his distinctive work the last 16 years, currently living and working in the Tamar Valley. His work is characterised by the loose handling of oil paint with an intuitive sense of colour underpinned by a confident drawing style and includes many recognisable views of Plymouth, Tavistock and the beaches and villages of South East Cornwall as well as scenes from further down in the county. His primitive style is very uplifting and we are treated to bathers splashing in the Plymouth Lido, lazy, sunny summer days in the sleepy Cornish villages of Kingsand and Coverack as well as walkers strolling along the river in Tavistock. caring matters

Why caring for the carers is so important

Caregivers often look after their loved ones at the expense of their own health and wellbeing. Waypoints care home manager Tessa Marriott explains why respite care breaks can be a real tonic. Respite care breaks can bring enormous benefits. Whether it is a temporary rest period for a few hours, a day or a block of time extending over weeks, caregivers can hand over the responsibility of looking after someone with dementia to us and invest in their own health and wellbeing. Caring for someone with dementia is not only challenging because it is a 24/7 responsibility.

obligation, to meet other residents, their families and our staff. They can pop in to our open community coffee mornings or bring family members in for a tour of the home facilities. It’s essential the caregiver has the peace of mind and reassurance knowing that if their relative or partner did spend time with us, they would be well looked after. We also want the person with dementia to look forward to their time with us – it’s as much a break for them as it is for their carer. For those who regularly book their respite breaks with us, Waypoints is considered as their ‘holiday home.’ It’s not unheard of for residents to say at the end of their respite break that they want to stay with us for longer and if there is a future need for full time residential care the transition into a place already known from respite stays can be much smoother.

It is emotionally difficult when dementia affects the behaviour and welfare of someone you have known for a long time and changes the relationship between you. Not being able to tell from one day to the next how dementia will affect the person you live with, responding to changes in behaviour and constantly being on tenterhooks about safety takes its toll on the caregiver.

We always have accommodation set aside for respite break residents so that we can respond to the unforeseen circumstances, for example the emergency hospital admission or illness of a caregiver.

Well intended pledges long before dementia was diagnosed ‘to never put me in a home’ and the out of date perception of life in a care home can make it difficult for a caregiver to consider or arrange a respite break. Carers sometimes say they feel guilty or that they have failed their loved one by turning to a third party for support. When we get a call from a caregiver enquiring about our respite break service, I will visit them in their own home and discuss their needs. We encourage them to visit our home with the cared for person, usually during the lunchtime, so that they can have a meal without any charge or

It’s heartening when you see a caregiver walk in to our home after a respite break looking and feeling more energised and positive. It may be that having undisturbed sleep or the rare opportunity to socialise without worrying about the person they look after has been just the tonic they needed.

Having a respite break should be a positive experience for the cared for person and their caregiver

It is well evidenced that if a carer is supported in this way and has ‘time out’ then their own health resilience improves which enables them to look after the person with dementia at home for longer.

event-full year for mel at the duke Organising functions and special events comes as second nature to Mel Williams of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. Every year Mel oversees literally hundreds of events - ranging from small private celebrations to weddings and annual balls attended by hundreds of guests. This year has been even busier than usual for Mel as the hotel celebrates its 150th anniversary. A series of themed events, each reflecting a specific era in the hotel’s history, are being staged during 2013. The Duke’s anniversary celebrations have already included a tea dance, behindthe-scenes history tours and the highly-successful ‘Tea at the Top’ promotion which included a two-hour afternoon cream tea in the hotel’s famous viewing tower, complete with champagne. A successful big band night was held in August and the latest high-profile fundraiser was on September 28 when the swinging sixties were remembered with local Cornish tribute band ‘Not the Beatles.’ Mel, who has been functions and events manager at the Duke of Cornwall for 16 years, said: “It has a been a big year for the hotel and I have really enjoyed being involved in helping to arrange these special events.” Funds raised during the 150th anniversary celebrations will be shared between three local charities: Jeremiah’s Journey, St Luke’s Hospice and Plymouth-based Friends and Families of Special Children. The Duke of Cornwall has an extensive range of function rooms, capable of accommodating everything from a small board meeting to a conference with 300 people.

tourism matters

Adrian Vinken

2020 - once in a lifetime opportunity to put plymouth on the global stage Ambitious plans to celebrate the 400th anniversary in 2020 of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth to America have been outlined. Adrian Vinken, chair of the Plymouth Culture Board and chief executive of the Theatre Royal, told a tourism conference in the city last month that Plymouth had a ‘rare and precious’ opportunity to put itself on the world map in 2020. He said that Plymouth could be the focal point of one of the most momentous historic events linking Britain and the United States.

Adrian said that there was a ‘mind blowing chasm’ between what Plymouth has to offer as a destination and the ‘impoverished’ way it has been presented up to now. “We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the visitor perception of Plymouth in 2020. We want to position the city as a ‘must see’ destination for American visitors,” he added. Adrian said that the importance of the Mayflower and the Pilgrim Fathers to the American nation could not be over-stated.“The Mayflower is seen as having carried

He told delegates that the celebrations in 2020 could involve: • The President of the United States and all living presidents standing on the Mayflower Steps alongside the head of the Royal Family to dedicate a new memorial to the Pilgrim Fathers • The biggest-even reunion in Plymouth of the direct descendants of the Pilgrim Fathers • A joint UK and USA Armed Forces Day on The Hoe • A transatlantic yacht race from Plymouth England to Plymouth Massachusetts • The construction of a new replica of the Mayflower or a return to the UK of the original replica, which is now in the United States.

Adrian Vinken addressing the conference

the seeds of the soul of the American nation - something which they celebrate with Thanksgiving every year.” He said that 2020 will be a nation to nation celebration and city leaders and local MPs had already met Prime Minister David Cameron to press the case for a global celebration in Plymouth in 2020. Talks have already started with Government officials and the American Embassy in London. Delegations from Plymouth Massachusetts visited Plymouth earlier this year and a reciprocal visit took place in May when Therese Murray, President of the Massachusetts Senate promised to discuss Plymouth’s plans with Secretary of State John Kerry. The conference, hosted by City College Plymouth, was entitled ‘Are we ready for 2020?’ and brought together representatives of the tourism and leisure industry in the city with travel and tourism experts. One of the keynote speakers at the conference was James Beresford, chief executive of tourism body Visit England. He said that 2020 was a ‘God given’ opportunity for Plymouth. “It is a landmark occasion and and Plymouth has a tremendous event to look forward to. But the city should not be complacent and civic leaders and the private sector must understand the importance of working together to promote 2020,” he said. Earlier, Duncan Currall, chair of Destination Plymouth, told the conference that the tourism and leisure sector generated business worth an estimated £330 million in the city each year and supported over 6,000 jobs. An estimated four million visitors come to Plymouth each year and Destination Plymouth’s objective is to increase that figure to five million by 2020, creating another 2,000 jobs. He said that the city was at a turning point in terms of attracting visitors with the recently approved redevelopment of Higher Home Park, regeneration of the Theatre Royal, conversion of the Civic Centre into a four star hotel and rooftop restaurant and the ongoing development of the Royal William Yard and Millbay. “We still have a long way to go to ensure that Britain’s Ocean City fulfils its potential and makes the most of our special relationship with America in 2020.”

Keith and Jean put their trust in Richardson Legal Services With a busy social life and plenty of hobbies and pastimes, Devon couple Keith and Jean Mullin are certainly enjoying a fruitful retirement.

With Keith and Joan’s sons both working during the week David arranged to meet the whole family on a Saturday to go through the details. Keith said: “David explained everything to us, answered all our questions and Allan and Andrew quickly grasped the concept of the trust.”

However, until recently their enjoyment was being overshadowed by concerns about ensuring their two sons were not deprived of their inheritance. Keith and Jean, who have been married for 52 years, were particularly concerned about what would happen to their family home in Ivybridge in the event of them passing away. Jean, who was a technical instructor with the local health authority before retiring a few years ago, said: “You work hard all your life and the last thing you tend to think about is what will happen when you are no longer around.” Keith, who served for more than 20 years in the Army before working in the motor trade locally, said: “We decided it was time that we thought about the inheritance and how to provide for our two grown up sons, Allan and Andrew. “We saw an advertisement for a free legal

Keith and Jean Mullin... enjoying their retirement in Ivybridge services drop in clinic at the local library and decided to go along. It was being run by David Richardson of Richardson Legal Services. “We explained to David about our concerns and what we wanted to achieve and he gave us some initial advice. We decided to visit him at his offices in Plympton and he explained the options available to us and provided us with information on a Home Protection Family Trust.”

David said: “The Trust will make it easier for Allan and Andrew after the deaths of their parents as they will not have to wait for probate which is not needed for property in Trust. “There are also substantial savings on probate costs - probate usually costs more than establishing a Trust – and the Trust also protects the property from all unforeseen eventualities.” Keith said: “As well as setting up the Trust David also updated our wills. The whole process only took a couple of months and the great thing now is that we have real peace of mind about the future.” For more information contact David Richardson on 0800 014 8031 or visit www.rls-uk.com

internation A striking Indian dance troupe and an inspirational orchestra of blind musicians will be among the headline acts at the 2013 Plymouth Respect Festival.

The event, which is organised by the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council, is being hosted by Plymouth University over the weekend of October 12 and 13. It will feature a blend of music, entertainment and food from across the globe, alongside a range of community focused and awareness raising activities. And among its star performers will be classical dance group Kathakali, and the Inner Vision Orchestra, who wowed crowds during a performance with Coldplay at last year’s Paralympic closing ceremony. A carnival atmosphere carrying a number of very important messages is being promised by festival organisers. There have been numerous changes since the last event in 2011, but the mixture of vibrant entertainment, activities and vital education will be carried through from previous years.

Dan Thompson, artistic director of the Plymouth Respect Festival, said: “The opportunity to bring such world class acts to the city is an absolute pleasure and must reaffirm that we are a city with culture. The Respect Festival has a huge role to play in raising awareness of Plymouth’s diversity and celebrating the many cultures and communities who call the city their home.” The Kala Chethena Kathakali Company hails from Kerala in southern India and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The group includes dancers, singers, drummers, with highly-skilled make-up artists adding to the visual spectacle. The Inner Vision Orchestra is led by musical director Baluji Shrivastav, and features musicians from around the world who are blind and partially sighted. They play world music with influences from Iran, Lebanon, Nigeria, and western music.

Events at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Drake Circus Until Oct 12 Nancy: The Life and Times of Lady Astor

Find out more about the life of Nancy Astor including her career as the first female MP and MP for Plymouth Sutton, a supporter of many causes and high profile acquaintances. Her roles as a wife and mother, friend and foe, politician and personality will be highlighted using images and objects from the City’s permanent collections. It is also hoped to include some loan items from a selection of national institutions. Sep 7 to Dec 7 Artists Make Faces

In 1983, Monika Kinley and her partner Victor Musgrave invited their artist friends to lend works for a small show in their new London home. The show

was called ‘Artists Make Faces’ and 30 years on this exhibition is a realisation of a long held idea to create a show on this theme in a public gallery. It will feature a distinctive and personal selection of works from public art galleries and collections, including Arts Council England, Tate and the Whitworth. So many artists both past and present are concerned with the face. It gives us our identity and acts as a mirror for our feelings. In this show, the selected artists use it as a canvas, playing with it or agonising over it rather than creating a straightforward image of a recognisable person. Oct 26 to Jan 15 Hidden In Plain Sight

The term ‘abstract’ can mean many things – to remove, to summarise, to be difficult to understand, to be impersonal – all of which can apply to abstraction in art. It can refer to art that has an object or landscape as its subject or starting point, or it can use forms that have no source from the visible world. This exhibition will focus on abstraction from our collection, including work by Patrick Heron, Ian Davenport, and Justin Knowles. It will also include previously unseen footage of Patrick Heron in his studio from the late 1950s.

Textile artist Jane Price at work

45 Southside Gallery in Plymouth’s historic Barbican continues its successful feature exhibition programme with a textile exhibition from October 18 to November 17. The gallery specialises in ceramics, glass and metalwork by artists based in Devon or Cornwall, and always some textile art. This exhibition is its first focus on textile art. Five textile artists will be showing their work and one ceramic artist, whose work starts as embroidery. Debbie Rudolph and Sue Spooner are both from Cornwall, while Jane Price, Helen Edwards and Beverley Bailey live in Devon. A passion for history is evoked by Sue Spooner’s woven rugs and wall-hangings. Sue’s work is inspired by decaying buildings found in the Cornish landscape, remnants of the Cornish mining heritage. Fellow weaver Debbie Rudolph also lives in Cornwall and gained extensive weaving experience during a degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London followed by a weaving scholarship with the International Wool Secretariat. Debbie uses her experience to create wonderful materials, which she turns into throws, scarves, cushions, purses and bags. Jane Price, Helen Edwards and Beverley Bailey have all shown at 45 Southside before and will be showcasing their latest works. An example of Debbie Helen Edwards creates woven wallpieces and scarves as well as mixed media artworks Rudolph’s work which apply textile processes, like stitching, weaving and threading to a range of materials, including pewter, paper, fabric and ceramics.

Jane Price’s brightly coloured abstract works express an interest in saturated colour combinations. They appear like abstract paintings, but are embroidered. Beverley Bailey uses freehand machine embroidery to make wallpieces, as well as bookcovers and jewellery. Emma West’s ceramic panels will be exhibited alongside the textile works. The use of textiles in Emma’s work is a relatively new departure. An embroidery ‘image’ is hand stitched, quite loosely, allowing threads to fall freely and give a ‘sketch’ quality to the piece. The embroidered cloth is then impressed into the unfired porcelain. At this stage various freehand marks are made in the clay altering each piece. Glazes are subsequently applied to reveal the imprint bringing the permanence of porcelain to the fragility of a stitch. 45 Southside Street Plymouth, Barbican 01752 224974 www.45southside. co.uk

kf kitchens help ken and sue their dream kitchen It started with a leaking gas hob and ended up with a sparkling new kitchen.

decision, but after discussing our thoughts at length with Nathan we asked him to come to our home to do a survey and take things further.”

That was the unusual chain of events for Crownhill couple Ken and Sue Burns.

Sue said: “Nathan spent three hours with us talking about how we use the kitchen and our lifestyle. He gave us lots of advice about how to make the most of the workspace and all the different appliances available.”

Retired police officer Ken explained: “We discovered that our old gas hob was faulty and it was condemned as unsafe by British Gas. “We obviously needed a new hob but then started to look at our kitchen which had not been updated since we purchased the house from new 23 years ago. One or two of the doors were faulty and the kitchen looked pretty tired.” Ken and Sue, a former senior lecturer at Marjons, decided to visit local kitchen showrooms for ideas and inspiration. Sue said: “We had visited a few companies and were on our way home when we decided at the last minute to call in at KF Kitchens in Faraday Mill. It was the best thing we did. “The KF Kitchens showroom is huge with an amazing selection of different kitchen styles and settings. We were welcomed by Nathan Damarell who was friendly, knowledgeable, patient and businesslike all the way through.”

Ken said: “We actually fell in love with the first kitchen we saw and Nathan then took time to show us the appliances available, including giving us a demonstration of the amazing new NEFF induction hob. Nathan recommended moving the sink from under the window, which has a panoramic view across the city and has since become the focal point of the kitchen. Ken said: “Nathan worked out an initial estimated price and promised that the final price would be within 10 per cent of that figure - depending on how the installation progressed.” The couple decided to go ahead and the work went totally according to plan, being completed in around three weeks. Ken paid tribute to the quality of the tradesmen involved. “The whole project went really smoothly with Nathan project managing and the specialists carrying out the plastering, electrical work and plumbing. But special mention to Gary who installed the kitchen - he was a total professional.” The couple chose Alabaster cabinets with chrome handles with matching Taurus sand worktop and a Blanco granite sink. They chose eye-level NEFF ovens, including the latest AquaAssist technology, NEFF induction hob, cooker hood and a built-in microwave.

The adjacent utility room was also included in the makeover with matching cabinets and flooring from Karndean, supplied by KF Kitchens. Sue said: “What Nathan and his team have done for us is magnificent. We have so much more worktop and cupboard space - including corner cupboards which maximise the space available.” Last word goes to Ken: “Nathan told us to enjoy our new kitchen and we are certainly doing that. “The whole experience has been incredibly pleasurable and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who is thinking of a having a new kitchen. In fact it would be crazy not to visit KF Kitchens.” Right: Ken Burns enjoying his new hi-tech induction hob

Gareth Forrest pictured at The Chase an exclusive development of contemporary homes in Peverell

chase is on for eager home buyers An exclusive development of new homes in a sought-after area of Peverell is proving a big hit with potential buyers. Gareth Forrest of Town & Country Estate Agents said that within weeks of the development being advertised almost a third of the 14 properties at The Chase in Verden Close, had been sold or were under offer. The Chase is a brand new collection of contemporary styled homes, set within a landscaped courtyard, accessed by electric gates. It offers a choice of detached, semi-detached and town houses ranging in price from £239,950 to £279,950.

All have four bedrooms, two or three reception rooms, two or three bathrooms and integral garage. Many also have allocated parking spaces. The properties offer luxury fitted kitchens with integrated

In addition, all of the properties have a ground floor cloakroom, master bedroom with ensuite, patio and landscaped garden and come with a 10 year NHBC guarantee. Another benefit of the properties is the exceptional energy efficiency they offer. “We have had an extremely positive response to this unique development and there is a huge amount of interest in The Chase,” he said. “It is ideally located in Peverell only minutes from Hyde Park with its range of local shops and services and the much sought after Hyde Park Primary School and Plymouth College, both within walking distance.” “Its quiet position adjacent to the park, offers space to relax away from city life. Added to that, the Chase is just 10 minutes walk from Central Park and the new Life Centre with Mutley Plain is also close by.” The development is due for completion within a few weeks and Gareth is confident that all the new homes will be sold before the end of the year. Being appointed as sole agents for The Chase is another coup for Town & Country Estate Agents, which was established little more than two years ago. “We’re delighted to be involved in such a prestigious development and our appointment as sole agents is another important milestone for Town & Country,” added Gareth. “We were involved in marketing a development in Tavistock earlier this year, but this is our first in Plymouth.” Since its launch Town & Country Estate Agents has seen consistent growth and now has a four-strong team at its North Hill offices, led by Gareth.

Town & Country were at the Southampton Boat Show earlier this year and will be marketing their waterside properties at the London Boat Show in January. “We have seen a marked increase in the level of enquiries for waterside properties in Plymouth as a result of our membership of the network,” said Gareth. “Plymouth has so much to offer, particularly for the sailing fraternity and we expect interest in the city to continue to grow in the years ahead.

“The development of the Royal William Yard, Millbay and Sutton Harbour are all positive news and property investors are now waking up to the huge potential of the city, especially with the number of top chefs who have started businesses in Plymouth.”

Gareth said that there was now a more optimistic view of the property market in the city, with confident buyers returning to the market which will potentially will see prices rising slowly in the months ahead. “Affordability is still a key factor in the market and we hope that homeowners will remain realistic about asking prices. Government initiatives such as ‘Help to Buy’ and will undoubtedly stimulate more growth in the market, but no-one wants to see a return to the ‘boom and bust’ days of the past.” He said that the lettings market remained particularly buoyant with plenty of new investors achieving yields of between six per cent and 10 per cent, particularly with student properties. “It’s good to see that Plymouth is increasingly regarded as a great place to invest, live or spend your retirement,” he added. free landlords expo and training event at guildhall in october

furniture matters

Westcountry Landlords Association in partnership with Plymouth City Council is again holding their Annual Expo, this year in addition with a Landlord Training Event. This event is to encourage not only those who wish to enter the property market, but also experienced landlords with information and seminars and engaging with the experts. The event is being held on Thursday October 24 at the Guildhall in Royal Parade Plymouth from 12 noon to 6pm. All people attending will be entered into a free draw for many prizes including Marks & Spencers vouchers. Manny Pisani, chairman of Westcountry Landlords Association, said: “The plethora of changes in the law in respect of letting property has confused some landlords and anyone considering letting should consult with the experts and professionals to ensure that they comply with all the requirements that are now required, not only from drawing up the tenancy but also in establishing what their obligations are. It is no longer a simple case of handing over the keys in exchange for deposits! “The introduction of the Housing Act 2004/2006 has seen the biggest ‘shake-up’ in the Private Rented Sector’ in the last 50 years. “This piece of legislation together with many other requirements that have already been implemented such as Planning, Licensing, Deposit Protection – of which the rules changed again in April 2012– and Local Housing Allowance which is changing (ie how the Housing Benefit is administered) to Universal Credit in addition to the introduction in 2008 of Energy Performance Certificates which are now a legal requirement.” In October 2013 Housing Benefit/Local Housing Allowance will be administered by the Department of Work & Pensions in a single payment directly to the tenant of all benefits – this will be known as ‘Universal Credit’. Another government proposal is to ‘scrap’ the benefit for people aged 25 or under, the Prime Minister David Cameron suggestinfg this will save almost £2bn on the welfare bill. Manny Pisani, added: “We have also seen local authorities fining landlords heavily for non-compliance in respect of issues such as ther condition of a property condition or lack of House of Multiple Occupancy licence and most commonly landlords being sued through the county court for non-lodgement of the deposit. “This event will give landlords and potential landlords the chance to meet experts who are well versed in their own field and give the opportunity of discussing individual requirements in addition to promoting landlord awareness highlighting their responsibilities in providing safer and more comfortable living accommodation for their tenants.” Exhibitors and contractors at the event will cover a wide range of specialist areas while Plymouth City Council will have many representatives from all departments concerning landlords. Energy Performance Certificates, which are now a legal requirement will provide prospective tenants with a rating showing its energy efficiency and its environmental impact on a scale from A – G where A is the most efficient and G is the least efficient for the property that they occupy. These certificates are now provided with domestic appliances such as fridges and washing machines. Manny Pisani added: “It all starts at 12 noon and everyone is welcome to attend this event. It will provide a fantastic insight with many exhibitors and free seminars to make it a memorable and educational day for all. Why not make a day of it by attending this free event: we look forward to welcoming you.”

Peter Farrow of Futons 247 in his showroom at HQ Business Centre

Independent businesses can compete with big high street retailers by offering a first-class product coupled with first-class service and value for money. That’s the ethos of Plymouth businessman Peter Farrow who has been selling futons and sofa beds for nearly 20 years. His company, Futons 247 is the internet trading site of The Futon Shop, and now operates from a first floor showroom and offices at the HQ Business Centre in Union Street. He has been running the futon business in Plymouth since 2004, returning to the city after spending four years with a futon manufacturer in East Anglia. “I launched the online business nearly 10 years ago and also operated from city centre premises for about a year, but that became increasingly unsustainable,” said Peter. “I started the online business because I felt it offered a good alternative to the traditional high street retailing. My experience with the shop in Cornwall Street confirmed that view. “We sell to customers all over Britain via our own website and also through Amazon Marketplace, which has proved increasingly important to us - particularly with a growing number of customer recommendations,” said Peter. “We have seen the need to move into specific niche markets - such as oak frame futons and futons that you can sleep on all the time. The market is increasingly competitive so we have to offer something extra in terms of service, quality and product range. “More and more people are now using a futon as the mattress on their main bed, this mainly being due to the good support that a futon mattress offers by moulding itself to the shape of your body forming what we would call a people shaped impression on the futon mattress.” He said that the luxury Pocket Futoflex futon mattress was particularly suitable for bed use as it contains a ‘cage’ of springs inside the top and bottom layers of woolfelt. “We have a lot of business in London and the south east,” said Peter, “and we are keen to serve more customers in Plymouth and the immediate area.” “Thankfully not everyone wants to buy from the big stores and we take pride in the quality of service and product which we deliver.” Futons 247 deliver direct to the customer’s home or place of work using reliable carriers. For customers in the Plymouth area Peter is happy to deliver products free of charge and will also assemble the futon or sofa bed for the customer. Customers

He said that futons and sofa beds were popular with a complete cross-section of customers - from professionals to those who prefer to live a more radical lifestyle. “Many customers opt for futons or sofa beds because of space or access considerations - but I am often surprised by the addresses we deliver to in London - some of the most upmarket parts of the capital. City College students show their support for St Luke’s Hospice fund-raising campaign

st luke’s to benefit from college fundraising City College Plymouth has nominated local charity, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, as the recipient for its fundraising and volunteering during the current academic year. St Luke’s offers palliative care 24 hours a day, seven days a week to individuals with a life limiting illness, as well as support to their families. However, to provide this service they need to raise over £4.5 million each year. Talking about the charity nomination, City College Plymouth principal, Phil Davies,

said: “St Luke’s is a local charity that many of our students and staff have been touched by, and was suggested by a member of staff. “In any year there is a host of fundraising activity - often organised by the students themselves as part of their studies, but also run as a way of making a contribution to our local community. “In addition to fundraising, our commitment to St Luke’s is also going to include volunteering. Again, there is a significant amount of volunteering across the College. “Volunteering is win-win. We can help St Luke’s provide additional services while enabling our students to put their newly acquired skills into practice, and give them a real sense of pride in doing this for such a worthwhile cause. Students then have real experience, helping make them more employable. “We are introducing an element of competition amongst our students with the volunteering and fundraising. This will help us, as a Gazelle College, demonstrate the positive impact that enterprise and entrepreneurship has on all aspects of society. ” St Luke’s communications and marketing manager, Robert Maltby, said: “We are so delighted to have City College on board and can’t wait to start working with them. “Fundraising is, of course, key to St Luke’s being able to operate and offer essential end of life care to the local community. However, the volunteering arm of St Luke’s is also a major part - without our army of volunteers we could not function! Our Volunteering in Partnership (VIP) opportunities will enable the students to help the charity and interact with patients. “At the same time it will give the students work experience and references for their first step into employment.”

However, the Red Sea resorts visited by the majority of British tourists have remained unaffected by any violence and protests. In such circumstances, the travel industry is lead, and to extent governed, wholly by information supplied by the Foreign Office. As soon as a country or a particular area is deemed unsafe for Britons to travel to, the Foreign Office will formally issue advice to this effect and holidaymakers are then permitted to change or cancel their travel arrangements free of charge. Tour operators are required to abide strictly by Foreign Office advice. This means that if a country or area is considered safe to travel to, despite any nearby unrest, the travel company is perfectly within their rights to continue taking bookings and sending clients to these destinations.

By Travel Expert Anthony Goord

In such circumstances tour operators also have no obligation to refund passengers who choose to cancel. It is therefore worth remembering that if you do not agree with Foreign Office advice and choose to cancel your holiday anyway, you will be liable to pay cancellation or amendment fees. In some cases, if you leave it until the last minute and cancel very close to your departure date, you could lose 100 per cent of your money! For anyone who is unsure of the official advice surrounding their destination, I would urge you to contact your travel agent or consult the Foreign Office website - www. gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice - which is updated regularly particularly during times of civil and political unrest and conflict. Looking at the opposite and considerably more unlikely scenario, if the Foreign Office declares a particular country, area or destination as unsafe to travel to and you still choose to go ahead with your visit, you should check that your travel

egypt - travel advice from the foreign office

safety is of prime importance when travelling to egypt The Red Sea resorts are situated on the Sinai Peninsula some considerable distance from the main Egyptian cities and are home to mainly foreign tourists. I fully understand that this doesn’t stop people from worrying entirely as they are still in Egypt, but we can only reiterate the feedback we are getting from clients who have just visited and this suggests that holidays will continue as normal. Always remember that your safety is of prime importance to all parties concerned and tour operators, travel agents and the Foreign Office have nothing to gain by sending anyone to an area that is not considered to be safe. On a much lighter note, I recently had the pleasure of meeting Mark Harris, the sales manager of Wendy Wu Tours. I am sure that many of you have noticed their advertisements in some of the national newspapers but were you aware that we can book all their tours right here in Plymouth? I have always thought that China would be a fascinating place to visit and it has featured on my personal ‘bucket list’ for some time although probably more appropriate for when my children are older and I have more time to spend travelling. To celebrate the launch of the new 2014 Wendy Wu Tours brochure, we will be holding a ‘China and Beyond’ evening at our West Park offices on November 20 starting with refreshments at 6pm and the presentation at 6.30pm. Mark will be available to answer any questions about the Wendy Wu product and give a presentation on their tours. Light refreshments will be provided and a selection of Chinese food will be served up for sampling. If you are interested in attending this special event, please call Tracey on 01752 364186 to reserve your places as numbers will be limited. We look forward to seeing you there. Happy Holidays!

speech matters

interesting talking points about speech and accents By Dr Laurence White School of Psychology, Plymouth University Imagine getting up for breakfast, saying a bleary ‘Good morning’ and hearing someone else’s voice coming out of your mouth. A Plymouth woman experienced just such a jolt to her identity in 2010. She was hospitalised after a severe migraine and suffered an unusual complication, apparently similar to a stroke. Like many stroke patients, her language was affected. What made this woman’s case so striking was the change in her accent, which sounded Chinese to many listeners. As seen in a recent BBC documentary - The Woman Who Woke Up Chinese - ‘foreign accent syndrome’ is very rare, but can have profound personal consequences. Notoriously, a Norwegian woman, Astrid L., was left with a strong German accent after suffering head injuries during an air-raid in 1941. Speaking in apparent imitation of the wartime enemy, she was ostracised by friends, despite having no control over her accent. Our power of voice is fundamental to our identity. Perhaps the most important lesson from these ‘foreign accent’ cases is that our sense of self is strongly affected by our spoken interactions with other people. The foreign accent is, in fact, as much in the ears of the listener as the mouth of the sufferer. Why are we so sensitive to differences in how people speak? One theory of the origin of human language may provide a clue. Chimpanzees, our nearest relatives, maintain good social relations by mutual grooming sessions, smartening up each other’s fur by stroking and picking off twigs and insects. This promotes trust between chimpanzees who rely on each other for help with hunting and foraging for food, and crucially, for defence from other groups of their fellow creatures. As early humans moved out of the forests and onto the African plains, our social groups became larger than those of our primate cousins. This made it impossible to devote hands-on grooming time to all group members. Instead, the theory suggests, we started using vocal signals to indicate our loyalties. The giant leap towards human language may have been given a crucial push by the need to prove trustworthiness within our early stone-age tribes. Of course, speech can only be a reliable signal of potential cooperation or conflict if we are sensitive to differences between voices. Research on very young infants suggests that we are born with this ability already active, if not fully developed. Growth in the womb takes place to a lively soundtrack of internal sounds – breathing, heart-beats, tummy rumbles – together with all the sounds of the outside world that the mother hears, though perhaps a little muffled. The mother’s voice is loud and clear to the developing foetus, however. Not surprisingly, new-born babies prefer their mother’s voice to another woman’s, the first sign of the lifelong human tendency to judge people by their accents. The Babylab at Plymouth University is one of Britain’s leading centres researching the development of language skills, from just after birth to six years old and beyond. “Babies react differently to familiar and new sounds,” said Dr Caroline Floccia, head of the Babylab.

54

the plymouth magazine

“By monitoring where babies look when listening to sounds and accompanying

visual stimuli, we can work out whether they can tell different accents and languages apart.” In one recent project, local babies at five months old, sitting comfortably on their carer’s knee, heard the difference between a Plymouth accent and a Welsh accent, but – rather surprisingly – could not tell Plymothian and French speakers of English apart. When played sentences from other languages, babies could clearly hear the difference between French and Spanish, but not between Spanish and Finnish. “The fact that babies can distinguish some accents and languages, but not others, tells us about the features of speech that are really important for them,” said Dr Floccia.

“Analysis of these babies’ behaviour suggests that they are sensitive to small differences in the duration of certain sounds, barely noticeable signs in speech that tell listeners when sentences are about to finish. legal matters

where there’s a will... ...there may well be a problem These days, apart from solicitors, there are lots of other people who want to get involved with providing legal services. Often people get steamrollered into signing paperwork which commits them to very expensive - and sometimes unnecessary - legal services, because they don’t realise what has happened until it is too late. Big businesses can tend to deal with peoples’ affairs just as a ‘process’ and often don’t take into account those personal things that real people need. Recently there have been some well-publicised horror stories regarding wills prepared by unregulated will writers.

A BBC Panorama investigation famously claimed will-writing services were unfairly taking thousands of pounds from customers and their loved ones. More recently, the Legal Services Consumer Panel has called for will writing services to be regulated following an investigation into the quality of wills and poor sales practices. The Panel’s mystery shopping research looked at the quality of wills prepared by solicitors, will writers, banks and online wills and came up with the statistic that a quarter of the wills failed for being not legally valid or of poor or very poor overall quality. Crucially, too many wills failed to reflect what the client intended and made other basic errors. Some did not cover all of the estate and sometimes clients’ requests had been left out or the actions specified in the wills were potentially illegal.

By

Jill Hill of Thompson & Jackson Solicitors

The survey also found cases where wills were drafted by ‘cutting and pasting’ from software packages without the required legal knowledge. This highlights the importance of instructing a professional, such as a solicitor or legal executive, to draft a will as they have relevant qualifications, undergo continual training, must be insured and provide redress if things go wrong. If clients use a solicitor in the first instance, not only can they offer the correct legal advice taking into account the relevant domestic and financial situations, but they can also advise on other services such as the creation of trusts, transfer of assets and powers of attorney. Some of the SeniorNet volunteers celebrating with a specially made cake

It’s been a busy summer for Plymouth SeniorNet, a project set-up to transform the lives of isolated older people by helping them to learn how to use computers and get on-line to access the ever increasing range of services and information available through the internet. Plymouth SeniorNet (PSN) is a partnership project between Routeways, Age UK Plymouth and Plymouth University, funded by the Big Lottery Fund (Silver Dreams). Plymouth SeniorNet’s IT-savvy volunteers, all of whom are over the age of 50, deliver individualised learning programmes to help older people bridge the ‘digital divide’ and go online to access information, entertainment, specialised services and to communicate with family and friends. SeniorNet volunteers are DBS-checked and receive training so that they can

support people in one-to-one sessions in their own homes or in small informal workshops led by an expert trainer. As well as IT-support, volunteers are able to detect and respond appropriately to additional needs, especially signs of neglect and other difficulties associated with the challenges of ageing. Since the beginning of June, as well as supporting individuals all over the city, Plymouth SeniorNet volunteers have assisted over 50 people in workshops held in community centres and sheltered housing schemes and will continue to do so over the autumn months including at Age UK Plymouth’s three centres in the City Centre, Mount Gould and Plymstock which now offer free Wi-Fi to users. Some of those benefitting from the project bring along their own equipment, while others are introduced to a range of computer devices – everything from recycled laptops to the latest tablet – and supported in the choice and set

a blaze of colour in Well, we are at that time of year again when the nights are getting longer, the days are getting shorter and the temperatures are definitely getting cooler – but there is no need to be all doom and gloom. There is a whole explosion of colour happening in our gardens this month and it’s time to get out and enjoy it, because before we know it, it will be gone.

by

Derek

Anderson October is a month like no other in terms of colour, as this month is all about foliage, rather of Plymouth than flowers. Trees and shrubs become the Garden Centre stars of the show and illuminate the garden in shades of yellow, orange and red. Many also have an abundance of berries, also adding colour to the display and a much need food source for wildlife, especially crucial for birds in the winter. So this month I will be focusing on trees and shrubs – those much over-looked stars of the garden. But as we all know, space in a garden is precious, even more so in smaller gardens and every plant has to earn its place. So I have selected trees and shrubs that give interest through out the year and not just in autumn. Acers look particularly stunning now and are turning vivid colours before the leaves drop. I would consider Acers to have some of the best autumn foliage of any plant. They are available in a range of leaf shapes from large and hand shaped to small and delicate like lace. Acers also come in a wide array of colours from dark green to acid yellow and dark red to pink variegation. The leaves take on a luminous quality in autumn and change to shades of bright red, yellow and orange. They are happily grown in pots or the garden and like it best in dappled shade but

Acers bring spectacular autumn colours

can tolerate sun and shade. They like a slightly acidic soil to bring out the best of the colours but are adaptable to most soils. Acers range in height from 1m-8m (3’5’) wide and high, depending on the cultivar and variety. Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) is a large shrub that is particularly useful in the garden for autumn and winter colour. The leaves in autumn turn from shades of yellow, through orange to red gradually ascending up the leaf giving a rainbow like appearance. It also flowers in late winter with small spider like blooms filling the garden with a delicate sweet, spicy fragrance. They grow to a height of 4-5m (13’-16’) and a spread of 2.5-5m (8’-16’), but can be kept smaller by pruning. Cercis Siliquastrum is a useful small tree for adding colour to restricted locations. Due to its high canopy, tolerance of poor, compacted soils and urban pollution, this tree is well suited to life in a city garden. Leaves appear late on this spectacular flowering tree, after the startling clusters of pea-shaped blooms which can smother the tree and burst from the new young shoots, the surface of the bare branches and even the main trunk of the tree. To flower well it needs full sun and a long warm summer the previous year, and it is not so impressive in cooler gardens. From late summer onwards, large bunches of rich purple pods deck the branches and last well into winter, while the pretty foliage turns light yellow and chestnut in autumn. There is a variety called Cercis Forest Pansy, that has beautiful large, reddish purple heart shaped leaves from spring until autumn that makes a particulary goood garden tree. Another good variety is Cercis Lavender Twist, this is an unusual weeping variety, it grows to 2m (6’4”) with a spread of 1.5m (5’). These wonderful plants have many features which make them very attractive to gardeners in the UK: they’re drought tolerance, lack of invasive roots and winter hardiness all contribute to ensure that they are safe plants to place into even a small garden or patio container. It can grow up to a height of 10m (30’) with a spread of 9m (27’), but generally much less, especially when grown in a container and it can be pruned to requirement. Cornus or Dogwoods are generally grown for their winter stem colour and autumn leaf colours. They are unfussy about their soil conditions, but they are able to thrive in damp conditions where other shrubs might fail. Cornus Alba is the widest grown variety because of the colour range of stems that are available, commonly red, black, yellow or green. Cornus Controversa – the wedding cake tree – is grown because of the way the branches grow in a tiered shape resembling that of a wedding cake, and Cornus Officinalis is grown for the yellow pom pom flowers it produces on bare branches in late winter. All Cornus species will tolerate full sun or partial shade, but those grown for their winter stem colour show better colour when grown in full sun. Cornus Controversa needs little pruning, developing their tiered shape naturally with time. Limit pruning for removal of lower branches as the tree grows in height, will create a clear trunk.

gardening matters

october gardens bronze and red throughout the winter.

There should be one topmost leading branch, and any side branches that compete with it should also be removed. Pruning, if needed, is best carried out between autumn and early spring, while the tree is dormant and leafless. Hard pruning is not tolerated and will spoil the shape of the tree. Cornus Alba on the other hand need hard annual pruning to produce the best display Cornus Contraversa of colourful winter stems, but at the expense of flowering growth. However, allow plants to grow un-pruned for the first year after planting. Prune in early spring, before bud break, by cutting back all the stems to within 5cm (2in) of the ground, or within two buds of the previous year’s growth. Cornus Alba typically grows to a height and spread of approximately 1.8m x 1.8m (6’x6’) and Cornus Contraversa grows to a height and spread of between eight and 24 feet.

Malus Red Sentinel

The Rowan or Mountain Ash (Sorbus Aucuparia) has attractive creamy white blossom in early summer, usually in May or early June. These are followed by brightly coloured berries that are usually orange or red, but there are some cultivated varieties that are white or pink. The berries provide an excellent food source for birds in the autumn and are extremely decorative. The leaves in autumn are highly decorative, changing through shades of red, yellow and orange.

A striking tree to grow for its summer foliage alone is Pyrus Pendula, the weeping silver pear. The foliage is silver and covered in white hairs, making it stand out, particularly when grown against purple foliage or green foliage plants. It is an excellent tree to grow in a smaller garden being quite compact, it grows to a height of 5m (15’) with a spread of 4m (12’). Its ability to thrive in poor soils Trachelospermum Jasminoides and cope well with pollution makes it an ideal tree to grow in small city gardens. It produces white flowers in spring which are followed by small ornamental fruits that are great for the birds. It prefers a position in full sun on alkaline soil to perform at its best. A really nice low growing grass that has beautiful summer foliage and autumn foliage is Hakonechloa Macra Aureola. It is one of the most eye-catching small grasses, forming elegant arching clumps of vividly Hakonechloa Macra Aureola striped bright gold and lime-green foliage that holds its colour throughout the season. When grown in full sun this cultivar often develops a slight reddish tinge. So why not go outside and enjoy the seasonal colour before it’s gone! Happy gardening from Derek.

The Rowan prefers a site that is in full sun or partial shade on well drained, slightly acidic soil, but it can tolerate neutral soils. It grows to a height of approximately 1015m (35’-50’) in height with an approximate spread of about 7m (24’). It produces a light open canopy allowing for a wide range of plants to be grown at the base of it. It is also a great tree to use in a smaller space because it is light and airy and not overly imposing. Crab apples are superb little trees with stunning pink/red buds that open into mostly white blossom in the spring and mature into little red or yellow fruit in the autumn. It is ideal for any small garden and looks truly spectacular at this time of year. The spring blossom is outstanding and rivals that of the ornamental cherries. The small fruits look great and can last on the branches for months. There is also the added advantage of the beautiful autumn foliage colour. It prefers a sunny position and tolerates most soil types. The best varieties to go for are Malus Red Sentinel, John Downie, and Golden Gem and they can reach a height of about 3-4m (10-12’) with a spead of 2-3m (6-10’). A trouble-free climber for the garden or large patio pots is Trachelospermum Jasminoides – a reliable flower that can grow up to 3-9m (12’-29’) in height and is perfect for climbing up a trellis, scrambling through shrubs and trees or for screening fences and walls. It produces large clusters of highly scented, five petaled star shaped white flowers from mid summer freely into autumn. It will continue to flower into early autumn. It prefers a position in full sun in free draining soil. We have in a couple of new varieties that still offer the same sweetly scented flowers, but have slightly different leaves to the norm, the first is Golden Memories which has beautiful golden evergreen foliage throughout the summer, turning bronze in the winter and the second is Waterwheel. It has thin, elongated leaves in dark green with a silver stripe running down the centre of the leave. It has dense growth and is quite unusual but very striking. Again the foliage turns Plymouth Garden Centre in Fort Austin Avenue, Crownhill is open from 9am to 5.30pm weekdays and 10.30am to 4.30pm Sundays Tel: 01752 771820. www.plymouthgardencentre. co.uk the plymouth magazine
