lucy aims to put gingerbread and its services on the map in plymouth Gingerbread, the national charity which has campaigned for single parents for over 95 years, has appointed its first full-time worker in Plymouth. Lucy Wooldridge, 34, moved to the city in July having previously been based at the charity’s London headquarters. Her primary role is running the highly-successful Marks & Start initiative in the South West, an in-to-work programme run by Marks & Spencer and Gingerbread, which nationally has helped nearly 4,000 single parents to gain the skills they need to enter, or re-enter, the workplace. Marks & Start also works with young people, people with disabilities and those at risk of homelessness, to support them to gain skills and find work. As Gingerbread’s programme lead for Marks & Start in Devon and Cornwall, Lucy will be working with hundreds of single parents not only in Plymouth, but also in Exeter, Torquay, Truro and Hayle.
Lucy Wooldridge is Gingerbread’s first full-time worker in the city
She will be working closely with organisations such as Working Links and the Family Information Service in helping single mums - and dads – on the Marks & Start programme. She will also be promoting the wide range of support services which Gingerbread offers single parents. “Although nine out of ten single parents with dependent children are women, the 10 per cent of male single parents still represents a significant number and they can often have quite different needs,” said Lucy. “One in four families in the UK is headed by a single parent. But despite single parents being a normal part of family life, they still face major barriers to work – which is where we come in.” Lucy, who has worked for Gingerbread for four years, was born and brought up in Cornwall and is thrilled to be back in the West Country. “I absolutely love Plymouth,” she said. “As an outsider coming in to the city I would say that it’s been totally misrepresented. It has so much to offer families and I have been overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome I have received.” Lucy will be working hard on behalf of the 7,000 single parents with dependent children who live in Plymouth. She is encouraging local single parents to use not only the Gingerbread website on www.gingerbread.org.uk but also to join the 46,000 people who have become members of Gingerbread nationally.
A unique gallery, now open 7 years, selling jewellery, glass, ceramics and other gift items; all hand made in the UK; all exclusive to Plymouth and now available to buy online at www.nicolahurst.co.uk Nicola makes jewellery on the premises. “It’s totally free and easy to join online and offers a whole range of news, advice and benefits for single parents, including access to fantastic family-friendly special offers and discounts,” she said. Lucy explained that there are two million single parents in the UK today, raising three million children. “More than half of them are in work and most of the rest tell us they want to have a job,” she said. “But barriers like unaffordable and unavailable childcare, needle-in-a-haystack flexible working options and a lack of proper support and training opportunities are standing in the way of single parents getting, keeping and progressing in jobs that match their skills and meet their families’ needs.

plymouth’s accolade as one of the country’s first ‘social enterprise cities’
Members of Plymouth Social Enterprise Network celebrate
Plymouth has become one of the first ‘social enterprise cities’ in the country.
“This award is recognition for the hard work of the scores of social enterprises in the city and those who support them.
The accolade, granted by Social Enterprise UK - the national body for Social Enterprise - recognises the extent and quality of social enterprise business activity in the city. Bristol has also been awarded the status.
“We have a diverse range of social enterprises in the city including massive businesses like the University and Plymouth Community Healthcare but we also host large numbers of smaller but no less valued companies.
Plymouth’s Social Enterprise City status will raise the profile of the sector, within the city and beyond, and could also help to attract extra investment so social enterprises in Plymouth can make a bigger contribution to the local economy.
“What’s happening in Plymouth can happen right across the country. This bold, imaginative approach can change the way we think about economic development in towns, cities and regions.”
There are an estimated 150 such firms in Plymouth that collectively employ around 6,000-7,000 people and bring in half a billion pounds of income to the city.
The award is part of a ‘Social Enterprise Places’ scheme being run by Social Enterprise UK. The scheme recognizes that there are towns, cities and areas that wish to promote their status as ‘hotspots’ of social enterprise activity.
Gareth Hart, Chair of Plymouth Social Enterprise Network (PSEN) - which led the bid for the award, said: “This is fantastic news for Plymouth which proves we are one of the nation’s social enterprise capital cities.
In order to be certified as a social enterprise city a number of criteria must be met, committing the town to promoting the social enterprise message, and encouraging local people and local businesses to buy from social enterprises. Peter Holbrooke, chief executive of Social Enterprise UK, said: “Continued austerity is dismantling communities and local amenities, deepening the UK’s social problems and leaving many people out in the cold.

“Plymouth and Bristol are prime examples of what enterprising communities can achieve in times of hardship. We hope to see many more towns and cities celebrate their social enterprise status.” Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “It is great to see us recognised as one of only two social enterprise cities in the country. Everywhere you look in Plymouth and see people working together for the good of their city and their community there is likely to be a social enterprise. “You can see it in north Plymouth where we are working with residents to set up a Community Economic Development Trust. “The Wolseley Trust and Millfields Trust – both social enterprises – are going great guns and we are backing the likes of Ocean Studios, which will create business and a buzz in a stunning Royal William Yard and could create over 100 jobs and a home for Plymouth’s burgeoning creative arts enterprise culture. “We want to be a ‘brilliant co-operative council’ and part of that ethos is working with other organisations to encourage good ideas to come to life and instil a sense of can-do in Plymouth.” Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, said: “Social enterprise makes a huge and positive contribution to people’s lives, and to the competitiveness of the UK economy. “As the enterprise University, and an anchor institution within the region, we are committed to using our world class research and expertise to create new opportunities and foster entrepreneurial spirit. We are proud to be part of the UK’s first social enterprise city, and will continue to use our rich and varied experience to transform lives throughout our campus and community.” Social enterprises are businesses that trade for social and environmental purposes, not to maximise profits for owners and shareholders. Social enterprise covers a range of business models, including community interest companies, not-for-profit, mutual and charitable companies. The news comes ahead of PSEN’s plan to stage another festival of social enterprise in Plymouth in November, following the success of the inaugural event last year when 500 people attended events each day for a week. PSEN is a business network of 100 members including nearly 70 Plymouth-based social enterprises and 30 other interested organizations.

Cross Keys Estates - 10 years One of Plymouth’s leading independent estate agents is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the opening of two new branches and the strengthening of its team. Cross Keys Estate Agents was founded by Jack Merriott and Craig Duncan in Stoke Village in August 2003 and over the last decade has established an enviable reputation for the quality of its customer service. Glowing customer testimonials on the national website www.allAgents. co.uk places Cross Keys among the top 70 estate agents out of nearly 12,000 in the UK. Having established a strong presence over the last 10 years in the Stoke, Milehouse, Keyham and Ford area, Cross Keys Estates earlier this year opened a first time buyers centre, also in Stoke at the junction of Milehouse Road and Devonport Road and in September unveiled their impressive new branch at Cherry Tree House on Mannamead Road. With the addition of the two new branches Cross Keys is now able to cover all areas of the market not only in Plymouth, but also into South East Cornwall, the South Hams and further afield. Over the last few months Jack and Craig have also strengthened and enlarged their team. Bev Green and Rob Down have been joined at the Stoke office by sales negotiator Jon Curtis and apprentice Aimee Mitchell, while Craig’s daughter and son Rachel and Tom also work part-time in the business. The Mannamead branch also benefits from part-time input from Kerry Parsons as well as providing a base for financial advisors MFS Partners, led by Peter Nixon and Sarah Millman. Speaking about the foundation of Cross Keys Estates, Jack said: “Craig and I used to work for a large corporate agent as an independent financial advisor and sales negotiator respectively. It soon became clear that we knew we could do this for ourselves. “After a few months, we secured a prime location in the middle of Stoke Village and set about refurbishing the property. However, we couldn’t decide on a name until we noticed that there was a logo at the top of the building which said “Cross Keys House and the year 1905”. We immediately knew that we were going to be Cross Keys Estates.” Jack said that they had always wanted to be distinctive and different from other estate agents and that part of their identity was to ensure that customers felt comfortable in their office. “The better customers feel and the more relaxed they are, the more we can understand their needs,” he added. With an obvious flair for interior design, Jack has over the years developed a distinctive atmosphere in the Stoke office, creating a warm, family-friendly feel - complemented by their two Border Terriers

Rusty and Oscar, who both love sitting on the back of the sofa watching the world passing by. “We are now firmly established as the Stoke agent and I have been given the unofficial jocular title of ‘The Squire Of Stoke Village’, “ added Jack. He went on: “It was after the only other estate agent in the village closed – as did many corporate agencies – that we decided to expand. We took up the option on this property and created our first time buyers centre. “As the only independent agent in the west of Plymouth, it was clear that there was an opportunity to specialise in first time buyers due to the dense amount of two bed houses in the area that are ideal for people wanting to get on the property ladder. “This interior was simple, bright, light, fun and very different. As with the first office, we sourced all the fixtures, fittings and furniture locally, we used local companies to do electrics, signage and decorating and made sure that everyone knew we support our local economy. “With its painted furniture and Brian Pollard prints, our first time buyers centre is a real departure from the run of the mill offices that people are so fed up with, the feedback that we have been getting is just overwhelming.” When the opportunity arose to acquire premises in the sought-after
Jack’s house doctor advice Jack Merriott’s ‘house doctor’ skills have helped dozens of homeowners to enhance the value and saleability of their properties. As part of the Cross Keys Estates service, Jack freely offers his advice on how to make a property more appealing and eyecatching. “People buy properties because they like the look of them. So many housebuilders and homeowners these days offer magnolia boxes with no appeal at all. It’s death by beige! “It’s amazing how a bit of time spent on de-cluttering and a few hundred pounds invested creating impact with effects such as feature walls and eye-catching decor or soft furnishings can make a property so much more memorable and sale-able,” said Jack. “I always try to be honest with vendors and give them the benefit of my advice as a property professional with all the experience I have gained over the years.”

on and still growing strong affluent district of Mannamead, Jack and Craig decided to accelerate their business plan. They took over Cherry Tree House in the summer and after an intensive period of refurbishment it was officially opened for business in late September. Jack said: “In choosing the Mannamead location yet again, it was all about knowing your market and creating a bespoke agency to meet the need of potential clients.” Jack used all his ‘house doctor’ experience and interior design ability to create a totally new concept for the Mannamead office. Jack explained: “I immediately had the idea of class, period features and vintage. Old Victorian desks, chaise lounge, captains chairs, chandeliers, ceiling roses and columns all jumped into my head, the job now was where to find them all. “After commissioning the alteration works, we found that the suspended ceiling hide the original ceiling roses and cornicing, mainly in good condition but needing some minor repairs. “The local firm Vince Crowe came, fixed and also made a pair of matching fireplaces. Again it was a whole host of local shops, companies, and yes, my mum, who came up trumps. “The local antique shops were great: I sourced several old desks and and put the word out for the other items that I was looking for. I was put in touch with a shop that specialised in all things vintage called It’s All A Matter Of Taste where I bought dining chairs, chaise lounge, chandeliers and several other bits. “After the building works were completed, it took only three weeks – and 10 years experience – to put the interior together. I love the look, it finishes off our range of offices perfectly. “We have a fun and funky first time buyers centres, a family-friendly

Jack added: “Each office has a distinct and very different identity but our customer service remains the same throughout: honesty, integrity and enthusiasm, keeping business local, supporting the local economy and employing local people. We are an agent for Plymouth, in Plymouth who love Plymouth.” Cross Keys Estates have always gone out of their way to support local businesses, organisations and charities. amy and amanda take the plunge to launch a new-style bridal boutique Friends Amy Bellamy and Amanda Kirk are living their dream after launching a new-style bridal boutique in Plymouth.
They often talked about running their own business together and when the bridal business at Marsh Mills came onto the market earlier this year, they decided to take the plunge.
Amy and Amanda gave up the security of well-paid posts at Plymouth University to set up Amica Bridal Boutique in spacious premises alongside the Sainsbury’s store in Marsh Mills.
Amanda, who is 31, said: “My father died in 2012 and soon after my mother was diagnosed with cancer. It made me realise that life is too short not to take chances and follow your dreams.” Amy, 33, added: “We spent several weeks drawing up a detailed business plan and were absolutely bowled over when the bank decided to back us financially. They said it was one of the most comprehensive business plans they had seen.”
They took over what was formerly A Day to Remember bridal shop in August and over the last two months have completed a total restyling and refurbishment of the shop. They have not only extended the range of dresses and accessories available, but also created a totally new Pamper Room offering hair, nail, make-up and beauty treatments for not only the bride, but also family and friends.
With the bank’s backing the pair left their jobs at the university and took over the bridal business on August 1. They acquired the goodwill and stock of A Day to Remember and have transformed the premises since and also extended the range of dresses available.
The pair originally met at Plymouth University where Amy was social media manager and Amanda was a recruitment officer responsible for organising major events. The two colleagues had, for the past three years, run Amica Hair and Beauty as a ‘hobby’ at weekends and in the evenings.
Bridal brollies and lots
The range now includes bridal gowns from Alfred Angelo, Disney Fairytale, D’Zage, Mori Lee, Ronald Joyce and Victoria Jane. They have also added accessories such as shoes, bags, jewellery and umbrellas. Amica Bridal Boutique also stock a wide range of bridesmaid’s dresses and flower girl dresses for the younger children.
Amy had qualified as a hairdresser while off work on maternity leave of accessories while Amanda gained qualifications as a beauty therapist prior to joining They have been busy attending wedding fairs and trade shows - as well as using the university staff. social media extensively to spread the word about the new business. They specialised in hair and make up for brides and became increasingly interested in the wedding market as a result.
“We’re on a steep learning curve, but we absolutely love what we are doing,” said Amy.

Amanda Kirk and Amy Bellamy - living the dream
They have not only retained the three staff previously employed by A Day to Remember - including a highly-experienced in-house seamstress - but also employed an additional staff member who works at weekends. Amy said: “Our aim is to provide the very best customer service possible. We want to make the experience of choosing a wedding dress a happy and memorable one, not only for the bride herself but also family and friends. “Most brides will bring their mums with them to help choose the dress, but mums can often feel a little left out of everything - and they’re frequently the ones paying the bill,” she added. “With our special Pamper Room, mums won’t be left out. If they wish they will be able to have their hair or nails done while they are waiting - or even a massage and some aromatherapy.”

As well as brides, family and friends, Amy and Amanda hope to attract custom from the Sainsbury’s workforce next door.
“We get on really well with the manager,” said Amanda, “and we have put together a special discount for our neighbours at Sainsbury’s which means the staff can come in to have their hair or nails done or have another beauty treatment in their lunch break or after work.” To celebrate the launch of the business and the transformation of the shop Amy and Amanda held Amica’s seamstress a special opening weekend in October when they Jean Mullis invited brides to be and families to go along and see for themselves the range of dresses available. Youngsters from St Andrew’s Primary School enjoying an afternoon at the Duke of Cornwall with director Walter Combstock and Nikki Durbin, family support worker
In the past the school ran an art competition in which pupils had to do a drawing or painting of the hotel, which was won by the talented Leo Lewis. He was presented with a signed photograph of the hotel as a prize. As part of its Green Tourism commitments the hotel is next year planning to invite children from the school to bring produce that they have grown to the Duke where they can watch chefs preparing and cooking it. The hotel also hosts St Andrew’s ‘well behaved awards’ which involves successful pupils visiting the hotel with the headteacher, enjoying afternoon tea and also a visit to the iconic tower with its panoramic views of the city and Plymouth Sound. “It’s great to see the youngsters in the hotel - they certainly enjoyed the tower experience,” said Jon Morcom. The hotel is currently discussing the possibility of hosting a major awards night for St Andrew’s next year. Jon said that they were also hoping to forge links with the new Plymouth School of Creative Arts which is being constructed on land in Millbay just a few hundred yards from the hotel. The ground-breaking free school, sponsored by Plymouth College of Art will eventually house several hundreds students aged from four to 16. “We have already had a meeting with the headteacher Dave Strudwick and look forward to developing mutually beneficial links in the future,” added Jon. For the custard: 600ml milk; 1 vanilla pod or ½ tsp vanilla extract; 4 egg yolks 25g golden caster sugar; 2 tsp cornflour Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 2 pint (1.2 litre) baking dish with a little butter. Peel and core the apples, then slice (not too thinly) and put them in the base of the dish. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and creamy. Add the flour and salt and fold in until just combined. Make a well in the middle and add the beaten egg. Stir together, gradually adding enough milk to give a dropping consistency. Pour into the dish on top of the apples, spreading it over to completely cover them. Bake for one hour, until risen and golden on top. Just before it’s ready, make the custard. Put the milk and vanilla in a saucepan and slowly bring to simmering point. Remove the vanilla pod, if using. (You can reuse it to make vanilla sugar: wash it, dry and store in a jar with caster sugar). Whisk the yolks, sugar and cornflour together in a bowl. Gradually pour the hot milk onto the eggs and sugar, whisking all the time. Return to the pan and stir over a low heat until thickened. Pour into a jug and serve straight away with the pudding. To keep it warm if needed, stand the jug in a pan of hot water and cover the top with clingfilm to stop a skin forming.

food matters A family run restaurant in Plymouth’s historic Barbican is showcasing the culinary skills of three talented young chefs – and attracting glowing tributes from customers. The Dolphin House Brazzerie overlooking Sutton Harbour is run by Alan and Jackie Cottrell and their son Nick heads the trio of chefs at the restaurant. The family took over the restaurant in July 2011 and have set out to create a unique dining experience with a relaxed atmosphere in contemporary surroundings. Guests are met by an enthusiastic team and, in the morning, the smell of freshly baked bread. Executive chef Alan said: “We are passionate about delivering a memorable dining experience with our warm welcome and fresh seasonal menu. It is our mission to produce ethically sourced fresh food with integrity, from our day boat fish to local farm assured meat,” he said. The family have extensive experience in the catering and hospitality industry including, having operated an Exmoor inn for seven years. It was there that head chef Nick first worked in the kitchens at the age of nine chopping parsley! He attended a college for rural science and technology in Somerset, studied both agriculture and horticulture and so understands the importance of how animals are reared and fresh produce grown, before training as a professional chef in Taunton. Nick, 21, is a member of the British Culinary Association and Craft Guild of Chefs. The other young chefs are Jonathan Lodge and Lucy Brokenshire - both also in their early 20s. The trio of young talent was initially helped by experienced Italian chef Francesco Mercurio, who trained in Rome. They are now all determined to push boundaries, add to their qualifications and demonstrate their innovative and creative skills. Nick said: “Our ethos in setting up the restaurant is that food matters - how it is produced, prepared, made and served. It is also important to produce real food that

A CLEAR WAY TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF POUNDS WITH ENERGY-SAVING GLASS – AND WE DO WINDOWS Homeowners in Plymouth who are considering replacing their double glazing could save thousands of pounds – by simply changing the glass. Replacing standard double glazing with the new generation A-rated energy saving Planitherm glass could cost as little as £1000 for a typical 2/3 bedroom house - not only saving on the cost of new double glazing, but also reducing energy bills in the process. That’s the advice from Sebastian Treglown of Plymouth-based We Do Windows who said: “Most homeowners think that if their windows are draughty or the double glazing has failed, the only answer is to replace the complete window. “But that can often mean a bill of several thousands of pounds when there really is no need to replace the frames - the majority of which are manufactured to last for many years”. Failed double-glazing can be a real eye-sore, but with We Do Windows, replacing the glass can cost much less than most people think. Fitting Planitherm energy efficient glass is a much cheaper and effective solution. Planintherm’s advanced coating technology reflects radiated heat back Clearly a better way - as into the room, rather than allowing it to escape through these before and after the windows. At the same time Planitherm allows free heat and light from the sun to pass through the glass. The result is a lighter, brighter, warmer and more energy efficient home thanks to the advanced thermal insulation of Planitherm. By upgrading to Planitherm energy efficient glass, heat loss through the windows will be reduced by at least 40%, which means for very little cost you will benefit from a warmer house and cheaper heating bills. Sebastian added: “At We Do Windows we provide a range of double glazing repairs including locks, handles, hinges, seals etc. and fit Planitherm to provide an extremely cost-effective alternative to replacing existing double glazing.”

Not only can we appreciate our beautiful view for the first time in years, we can also feel a tremendous difference in the warmth of the house.” ST “We Do Windows fitted Planitherm double glazed units in our existing windows to combat excessive condensation. The job was carried out in an efficient and professional way with no mess, no fuss and nothing too much trouble. We have tried and tested these through a very wet winter and hot summer and all I can say is amazing! No more wiping up wet windows and puddles on windowsills every morning. A job very well done.” JT

Early diagnosis of dementia can make all the difference...
caring matters
Waypoints care home manager Tessa Marriott advised in a previous issue of the Plymouth Magazine about spotting early signs of dementia and now explains how dementia can be ruled out or diagnosed by making an appointment to see your GP. Early diagnosis of dementia gives the person with the condition and those close to them the best chance to prepare and plan for their future. With treatment and support, many people are able to lead active, fulfilling lives. When you see your GP about your concerns you will be asked about your symptoms and other aspects of your health and be given a physical examination. The doctor will arrange for some blood tests to be taken to check the overall health level and rule out other conditions which may be responsible for symptoms such as thyroid hormones. They will ask about any medication you may be taking which could cause symptoms similar to dementia and ask questions or conduct mental exercises to measure any problems with memory or clarity of thought.
Dementia can be difficult to diagnose, especially if symptoms are mild. If unsure, the GP may refer their patient to a specialist such as a neurologist who is an expert in treating conditions affecting the brain and nervous system; or an elderly care doctor or a psychiatrist with experience of treating dementia. It’s important to make the best use of your time with the specialist and if possible attend your appointment with a relative or friend. They can help make a note of what you want to ask and what the specialist said. The specialist may arrange for more tests, which may include brain scans or other diagnostic procedures. When all the test results come back the doctor should ask if you would like to know the diagnosis and whether anyone else should be told. If the tests indicate dementia the doctor can explain what type or advise if more investigation is needed if it’s not clear. They can advise on the symptoms, how the illness may develop, treatments and care and support services available in your area. At Waypoints our residents have different types and severity of dementia.
A series of exercises commonly used to help a doctor assess mental abilities can include remembering a short list of objects; writing a grammatically correct short sentence and correctly giving the current day of the week, followed by the date, month, season and year. These exercises do not diagnose dementia, but can give an indication of any impairment.
It can be difficult coming to terms with a diagnosis of dementia for the person and their family but with the right treatment, support and care environment, people can be happy, safe and have their personal needs and wishes respected.

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra performing at the Guildhall
acclaimed pianist to perform with the plymouth symphony orchestra Highly acclaimed British pianist Martin Roscoe will perform with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra at their next concert in November. The concert on Wednesday November 27, starting at 7.30pm at the Plymouth Guildhall, promises to be full of exciting contrasts. The concert opens with the Concert Overture Froissart by Edward Elgar. Inspired by the 14th Century Chronicles of Jean Froissart, it was Elgar’s first large-scale orchestral composition.

Martin Roscoe then joins the orchestra to play the 2nd Piano Concerto by Shostakovich – one of his most widely known and popular works, which is perhaps best known for its beautifully soulful 2nd movement. Martin is one of Britain’s most prolific recitalists and a versatile pianist, equally at home in concerto, recital and chamber performances. Recent and future engagements include appearances with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Symphony Orchestra, as well as recital performances at the Bridgewater Hall, Museé d’Orsay and Wigmore Hall.
Martin Roscoe
The final work is Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony. This is one of Tchaikovsky’s best known and well-loved compositions with its dynamic orchestral scoring and sumptuous melodies. It is a work of great contrasts with vivid orchestral colouring, strident, dramatic outbursts, and soaring romantic melodies.

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra regularly performs challenging music, ranging from traditional to contemporary. It is one of the longest-established orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 138 years. The orchestra attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor and Jennifer Pike amongst the most recent performers to play with the orchestra. Local husband and wife team Alan and Marcia Collins opened Whoopee! on Royal Parade in December 2003 and have maintained consistent growth at a time when many retailers are finding trade difficult. They had been looking to open a second store in Torbay, but on the way back to their Plymstock home decided to stop in Ivybridge. “We hadn’t thought of Ivybridge, but quickly realised that the town offered great potential for Whoopee! We found suitable premises in Glanville Mill and took possession within 10 days and opened for business less than a week later,” said Alan. The Ivybridge shop is about half the size of their 1200 sq ft Royal Parade premises, but will stock a similar range of toys, puzzles and games. It was opened by mid-October, just a few weeks after the couple first spotted the potential in Ivybridge. They will be recruiting extra staff and also taking on an apprentice to cope with the increased size of the business. Alan and Marcia had run a convenience store in Plymstock for nearly 10 years when they decided on a change of direction. “We had considered licensed premises, but at the time we had a young family,” said Marcia. “We had difficulty in finding traditional toys for educational purposes for our two boys and decided to look at the toy market as a business,” said Alan. “It took us quite a long time to find the right premises, but when the shop at 74 Royal Parade became available we decided to take the plunge,” he added. They have had to compete against national chains ever since they opened and have prospered because of their greater product knowledge and excellent customer service – as well as offering prices that are as good as the large retailers.

“Knowing your market is absolutely essential in this type of business,” said Alan. “Tracking the latest trends and ensuring you have the right stock at the right time at the right price is the key to success.”

comical christmas entertainment at the barbican theatre Plymouth’s Barbican Theatre will be offering an alternative seasonal show for all the family when the award-winning touring troupe of clowns, La Navet Bete, present their comical version of A Christmas Carol. The show will run from December 7 to 24 with matinee performances from December 14 onwards. The BBC said of the show: “Hilarious and utterly engaging. If all theatre was like this we wouldn’t need TV.” It is Christmas Eve. Snow falls heavily onto the cobbled streets of London. Oil lamps cast a glow over the Victorian town houses, while people hurry to their homes. Not So Tiny Tim is shivering round a miniscule fire. Meanwhile, the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, in his favourite pyjamas, is just about to rest his head on his pillow when he hears a clank clank clank and a long drawn out wail from outside his bedroom door. Bah humbug! It’s going to be a long night but a hilarious one. Crazy clown troupe Le Navet Bete are turning this Dickens classic into a physical comedy fun-fest for all the family using visual gags, jokes for the kids and the grown-ups with a sprinkling of topical satire for these recession-hit times. The Barbican Theatre is staging this production as an antidote to other mainstream, pricey Christmas pantomimes, building on its reputation for putting on alternative productions for family audiences. The Barbican Theatre is offering attractive discounts for families, schools and groups to enjoy the fantastic Christmas entertainment. Tickets are £12 or £9 concessions for OAPs, under 16s and students. A family ticket (two adults, two children) is just £35. And for large groups and schools buying in bulk, for every 10 tickets bought, the 11th is free.

marines take on fund-raiser An annual rugby challenge to raise funds for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust is taking place on November 5. The Medics Rugby Challenge, now in its fifth year, takes place at Plymouth Albion’s Brickfields Recreation Ground and will see the Royal Marines taking on the Peninsula Medical School. The Royal Marines will be aiming for a hat-trick of victories over the Medics whose only victory came in 2010 after the inaugural event resulted in a draw. However, the over-riding objective of the evening is to raise money for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and this year’s fixture is especially poignant, as next October marks the 350th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Marines. The money raised will contribute towards the Trust Fund’s long-term goal of raising £6 million by 2014. Entry to the ground is just £5, but there is also the chance to enjoy pre-match hospitality with a welcome drink, dinner, souvenir programme and entry to the match for £20. After the match there is an auction with generously donated items including a Mont Blanc pen from Michael Spiers Jewellers worth over £200, sunglasses vouchers from Specsavers worth £120 and even an iPad Mini from Orrery Recruitment. The Royal Marines Trust Fund provides physical and psychological support to injured servicemen and women during and after service. Event organiser Anthony Lambert OBE explained, the money raised does have a tangible impact: “What started as a thought while deployed in Afghanistan in 2008 has become a feature in the local rugby calendar and beyond. “Some of the money goes towards the care of injured servicemen and women enabling them to reshape a life that has been so dramatically changed. On their behalf, thank you!” The evening will again start with a youth match between Devonport Services and Ivybridge Under 16s (kick off 5.30pm). This will be followed with a display by the

So many artists both past and present are concerned with the face. It gives us our identity and acts as a mirror for our feelings. In this show, the selected artists use it as a canvas, playing with it or agonising over it rather than creating a straightforward image of a recognisable person. Until Jan 15 Hidden In Plain Sight
The term ‘abstract’ can mean many things – to remove, to summarise, to be difficult to understand, to be impersonal – all of which can apply to abstraction in art. It can refer to art that has an object or landscape as its subject or starting point, or it can use forms that have no source from the visible world. This exhibition will focus on abstraction from our collection, including work by Patrick Heron, Ian Davenport, and Justin Knowles. It will also include previously unseen footage of Patrick Heron in his studio from the late 1950s.

Man Booker Prize winner Ben Okri and comic turned writer Charlie Higson will be among the big names at the 2013 Plymouth International Book Festival. Acclaimed authors Kate Mosse and Gavin Extence also top the billing for the event, which will be held from October 30 to November 9 at a range of venues across the city. It will also have more of a family focus with events for children and a series of writing workshops, aiming to encourage people of all ages to unlock their creative potential. The Festival, a winner in Plymouth University’s 2013 Vice-Chancellor’s Enterprise Award, is organised through a partnership of Plymouth University, Plymouth City Council and charity Literature Works, with funding and support from Arts Council England. Ben Okri Director Bertel Martin said: “The festival has put Plymouth on the national literary map, attracting new authors and audiences to the South West.
“For 2013, we are looking to build on that success, with an increased number of events aimed at getting local people more involved in literature in all its forms. From the classics to spoken word, and horror to comedy, there is something to cater for all tastes at the Plymouth International Book Festival.” Thousands of people visited the inaugural Festival in 2012, where they were treated to a range of author talks and performances as well as events for young people. For 2013, the programme includes talks by Ben Okri, widely acclaimed as one of Africa’s greatest writers and winner of the Booker Prize in 1991, and Fast Show creator and actor Charlie Higson, who will be speaking about his teen horror series, The Enemy. Kate Mosse, best known for her 2005 novel Labyrinth, will talk about her debut collection of short stories, The Mistletoe Bride & Other Winter Tales, while Gavin Extence will speak about his debut novel The Universe Versus Alex Woods, which has received rave reviews this year.

so much to see and do on our trip to belgium via dunkirk 2014 is a very significant year as it marks 100 years since the start of the First World War I and 75 years since the start of the Second World War. So it seems appropriate that this month I can give you an insight into a recent trip I made to Flanders, the Northern coast of France and Belgium to visit my cousin. I have been to both countries on many occasions but the section of coastline from Dunkirk to Ostend was certainly a new experience for me. The journey began on the Plymouth to Paddington rail link, this takes approximately three and a half hours connecting with the Eurostar from St Pancras to Lille. When booking these trains I would leave at least 90 minutes between the arrival in Paddington to the departure from St Pancras just in case there were any delays although the underground journey between the two takes less than 20 minutes. The Eurostar will only take you 1 hour 20 minutes to Lille so in under five hours travelling time it is possible to to be in France even from Plymouth by rail. Once in Lille we purchased a fast rail ticket to Dunkirk. This journey took less than an hour, arriving in the late afternoon. I do find rail journeys very relaxing so although it appears to be a reasonably long journey you don’t have to deal with the extra time used at ports or airport for checkin and security and trains tend to get you to the centre of the town or city taking away the extra expense of taxis to get you there.

Containing a large collection of old photographs, maps and military material, it evokes vivid memories of this epic event in British history. A short drive from Dunkirk, in Eperlecques, the visitor can find further evidence of the key role played by the area during the Second World War in ‘Le Blockhaus’, a museum situated on one of the main V1 and V2 rocket sites which wrought such devastation on London. Once we left Dunkirk we boarded a local bus for a 15 mile drive that took us over the border into Belgium. The first town across the border is De Panne, a popular family resort boasting the widest beaches on the Belgian Coast. This is where my cousin lives and was the base for our stay. Here, younger children are well catered for in the large ‘Plopseland’ fun park, while all the family can work off the Belgian chocolate by renting a bike or pedal cart from one of the stalls on the sea-front.

Both on and behind the two mile long esplanade, with its splendid sea views, there is a large number of inexpensive restaurants and bars catering to a wide variety of tastes. From De Panne dedicated beer lovers can follow the trail of probably the most sought after beer in the world. About half-an-hour’s drive away on the road to Ypres lies the village of West Vletteren, where the Trappist monks occasionally brew their (in)famously strong bottled beer. Potential customers must ring in advance to make an appointment to pick up the one crate per visitor allowance. The lucky ones join the exclusive group that has been privileged enough to ever taste this hoppy nectar. Having adequately sampled some of the excellent mussels and local beers (but unfortunately on this trip not the West Vletteren!), we mount the coast tram.

enjoying the many delights of the flemish coast • continued from previous page Then, Nieuwport the main yachting centre of the area with its highly recommended fish restaurants. The second stage of our tram excursion brings us to Raversijde, where an open-air museum gives the visitor a glimpse of Hitler’s famous Atlantic Wall defences. The 60 or so German bunkers, coastal batteries and gun sites are among the best preserved in Europe. Some of the bunkers have been reconstructed in their original state and furnished with authentic objects. As the museum’s brochure rightly notes, ‘the atmosphere is definitely that of The Longest Day’. For those more interested in other aspects of history, in the dunes at back of the site a 15th century settlement has been constructed to illustrate how the coastal population lived in those far-off times. We re-mount the tram which now runs along the sea-wall to our destination. Ostend is the largest town on the Belgian coast and caters for most tastes.

Maritime history enthusiasts are again well provided for in the form of The Mercator, a three-masted sailing ship and veteran of 54 voyages, as well as one of the last of the ocean going trawlers. There is also a race course and a magnificent 1920s casino, reminiscent of the time when Ostend was attempting to become the Monte Carlo of the North Sea. If the races and casino leave you with any money, the nearby Thermae Palace Hotel, from the same era, provides five-star accommodation. Meanwhile, near the fish market, Ostend’s numerous renowned sea-food restaurants offer catering which, for quality and price, are among the best to be found anywhere. However, our sights are fixed elsewhere. It’s Saturday afternoon and we are wandering among the pubs in the winding streets behind the port searching for one featuring English football. Soon after the match had finished we were back on the tram heading to De Panne for a final night in a local seafood restaurant. The following day was our journey back to Plymouth with fond memories of an areas that is very significant to our own history. When looking for a short break or holiday it is very easy to forget this part of Europe as geographically from the West Country it’s not the most straight forward area to get to but with so much history and character it is somewhere that should be considered. The rail network in this part of Europe is fantastic and a few extra train rides can take you to Brussels, Bruge, Antwerp or even into France and Paris. After a few days experiencing all this coast has to offer I can see why my cousin has chosen to live here. As he said to me many times on my visit ‘It’s easy to feel at home on the Flemish coast’. Happy Holidays!

three children waiting for every approved adopter As National Adoption Week 2013 gets into full swing, local adoption agency Families for Children highlights the benefits for potential adopters following recent Government reforms in the process, including how misconceptions about who can adopt leaves the number of children waiting at a critical level. Families for Children is a voluntary adoption agency and charitable trust, based in Buckfast, South Devon and have been recruiting, preparing and assessing adoptive parents in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall since 1993. They place vulnerable children who are looked after in local authority care across the UK with adoptive parents across the region and this year will place 50 children with permanent loving adoptive families. One of the differences about Families for Children is its ‘forever’ support commitment that is given to all families who adopt through them. This enables families and children to return at any point for advice, support and assistance.

So what are the challenges facing Families for Children and other adoption agencies? Katey McDonald, recruitment co-ordinator explained: “Whilst we continue to have success in placing children with adoptive families across the counties, recent national statistics suggest that there are approximately 6,600 children waiting to be adopted which means there are three children waiting for every approved adopter (which currently stands at around 1800). “While we continue to have a steady number of potential adopters coming forward actual placement of children remains quite static across the country. For us to help tackle the problem of more children waiting than adopters approved we have to look at why people aren’t coming forward. Common misconceptions about who can adopt still make people believe they are not suitable. These include ‘I have to be married’, ‘I’m too old’ and ‘I have to own my own home’. In truth anyone over the age of 21 can be considered to be an adoptive parent regardless of marital status, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation, income or whether you have parenting experience or not. There is no such thing as an ‘ideal’ adoptive family and when we are looking for families we are interested in what they can offer to a child and how they can best fulfil their individual needs. Another common misconception about adoption is that it takes too long. Many think it takes years to go through the process when in fact due to Government reforms this year the assessment process is just six months As you can see there are no real barriers to exploring the possibility of becoming an adoptive parent and we really just urge people to come and talk with us.” As with most charities, finance is also a constant challenge for Families for Children; annually they have to raise around £300,000 to support their vital work with vulnerable children and to maintain their forever policy of support for adoptive families. Although they are paid a fee by the local authorities whenever a child is placed

plymouth centre so much more Plymouth Arts Centre is a nationally-renowned centre for contemporary visual art, independent cinema, creative learning and food. This hidden gem has been established in Plymouth since 1947, having been one of the first organisations to be set up by the Arts Council after the war. The historic building in Looe Street is close to the city centre and Barbican waterfront. I went down to meet Kate Foster, who is head of communications and development at the centre and is involved with its marketing and fundraising. Having previously worked at the Scottish Ballet in by Glasgow, she was also employed by an environmental Kerry Cole charity in Torquay for ten years. She shared how the Plymouth Arts Centre has a passion to continue its contribution into making Plymouth a vibrant cultural city. Kate said: “Our mission is to offer distinctive contemporary art and cinema. We are very proud of the warm welcome that we give to our visitors and are delighted that a lot of people who enjoy the venue make regular visits. “Once you get to know us, we find people are quite loyal. We are excited to be working directly with our chef, Sammy Lounds, a Jamie Oliver protégé from Fifteen Cornwall. As a result, we are able to create utterly delicious, simple food at affordable prices, with a great bar and friendly atmosphere. “Sammy won the ‘Best Restaurant Plymouth Award 2012’ and since then has introduced PAC lunches. He also supplies lunches for the children who attend the Plymouth School of Creative Arts. Sammy is very keen to teach children about healthy eating and the school kids are getting restaurant food from an award winning chef!” Kate shared that there are plans for the future involving Plymouth Arts Centre moving into a new purpose built home. They have been approached by property developer James Plymouth Arts Centre’s Brent with the view to being housed in a cultural award-winning chef Sammy Lounds quarter in the city centre.

Kate assured me they would keep all the elements that make them unique, but would be able to provide much more gallery space and climate control. These proposals are all subject to obtaining planning permission and being able to raise the necessary funding. Currently, Plymouth Arts Centre is presenting the work of internationally renowned artists, Luke Fowler and Bob and Roberta Smith. The forthcoming arts programme includes the exhibiting of results from an interesting project called ‘Looe Street Detectives’ from December 14 through to early February 2014. Through sound recording, filming and unearthing hidden stories, participants have contributed to an art-work, which has been made in collaboration with artist Sara Bowler. Everyone involved was encouraged to research their own interests in the area, whether that was the history of their own home, a lamppost or even the people who have lived in the streets. The six month pilot project ran from February until July this year and put an artist at the centre of the relationship between a gallery and its audience. Sara Bowler often employs research techniques to gather information, stories, anecdotes and facts about particular places as a precursor to making work about them. For this new work she has taken Plymouth Arts Centre as her site of investigation and invited audiences, volunteers and Plymouth residents to explore their own interest in the histories of the building and the wider locality to contribute to the project. legal matters
concern over new health and safety law
do you feel safe at work?
New law came into force on October 1 this year that will make it more difficult for employees to claim compensation if they have an accident at work which was not their fault. For the last century, employees have been able to rely on health and safety regulations and have been able to claim against their employer if there has been a breach that has resulted in injury. This includes, for example, regulations that require an employer to ensure that workplace equipment is maintained in efficient working order and in good repair. Until the recent enactment, if there was a breach of a duty, the employer would be liable.
Legal update from Wolferstans The law has changed. Section 69 of the Enterprise and Regulatory Act 2013 means that breach of health and safety regulations alone will no longer entitle employees to compensation if they are injured. It will be necessary to prove negligence. Many people will think this is a good thing, but it isn’t if you have suffered injury in a workplace accident The Government has argued that health and safety legislation has gone too far and that this reform is necessary to stop ‘compensation culture’ in its tracks. However, figures published by the Health and Safety Executive cast doubt on this. There has been a strong downward trend in workplace accidents over the last 10 years and a decline in fatal accidents. Rigorous health and safety law has helped to achieve this. The new law raises concerns. Failure to comply with health and safety law involves a simple test. Proving negligence is much less clear and will make it more difficult to bring claims. Insurers are more likely to dispute claims following this change in the law. This will cause difficulty for the injured person. More often than not information that is required to prove negligence is in the hands of the employer. The employer will have in their possession all of the documentation that is relevant and necessary to establish negligence. This will include accident report forms, details of previous accidents and risk assessment documentation. Key witnesses are likely to be still working for the employer and reluctant to give evidence fearing that they may lose their job. This is why health and safety regulations were introduced in the first place, so that a clear framework existed to establish whether an employer was liable and to prevent employees having to rely on information held by the employer to establish a claim against them. These changes will have particular impact in cases involving fatal accidents and where a victim is so seriously injured that they have no recollection of the events that led to the accident. In cases such as this, it will be especially difficult to establish negligence and hence to recover compensation. The Government hopes that the introduction of this legislation will reduce the burden of health and safety on business and make it easier to compete. The risk is that it will undermine a health and safety system that has achieved a substantial reduction in workplace accidents and fatal accidents. Will the encouraging trend towards safer workplaces be reversed? Following these changes, if you are unfortunate enough to suffer an accident at work, it is all the more important to seek advice from a lawyer who specialises in accidents at work, who recognises negligence and who knows what documentation an employer should disclose that will help to prove your claim. Wolferstans have a team that specialises in work place claims. For a free no obligation initial discussion please contact us on 01752 663295 or visit www.wolferstans.com

of Roundabout Day Care Centre
Food is really about celebrating all the senses, and this is where we can make food really fun and enjoyable for children. Far from the belief that we shouldn’t play with our food, I believe that using all our senses to enjoy our food is something we should be encouraging our children to do. A healthy and balanced diet is of great importance as their bodies and mind develop. Creating a positive attitude to food goes a long way to achieving this. So it is important that a child uses all their senses as they enjoy this exploration of food, whether using their sight as they look at the colours and varieties of food, or visiting the greengrocer, or watching the different colours of food as the seasons change. Smelling the food as it cooks, but smelling the raw food too. There’s nothing quite like the smell of home-grown tomatoes! The sound of food – the crunch of a raw carrot, the cracking of a poppadum. The more children are involved in the preparation of food, the more they are likely to enjoy eating it. So let them touch it. Let them mix the cake batter, chop up the

vegetables, measure out the pasta. And when it’s on the table, let them help themselves to naan breads, sauces, dips. We must encourage our children to enjoy food the same way that we do. Children don’t need bland, boring food. Children need to learn to enjoy food as we do, to taste the flavours we enjoy, have the variety that we choose. A healthy attitude to food is worth taking the time and effort to cultivate. Over the years, I have seen plenty of parents who have taken the seemingly easy option of letting the child select their diet. But not only does this impact the child’s health, it impacts on the parents’ life too. Eating out can be problematic – eating in can be problematic! As the child begins to be in control, this not only puts more work on the parent who has to cook multiple meals, it also sends out the message that the child is boss.
WE CAN HELP!
You can ask at your child’s nursery or toddler group, or visit your local children’s centre. There are also parenting courses available that can help in this area – and ask other parents what they do: you are not alone.
We are a psychotherapy service offering accessible treatments such as CBT, Counselling and EMDR. We specialise in anxiety, depression and trauma. All our practitioners are fully qualified.
Family meal times should be enjoyable; an opportunity to share the day and enjoy eating together. It is possible but it doesn’t just happen. You need to be intentional about it, working hard in your child’s early years to reap the benefits as they get older.
If you think we can be of help please contact us.
This power struggle can then continue across all aspects of family life. The battle at the dinner table is definitely one that is worth winning. If this is something you struggle with, then there are plenty of places you can look for help.
Food should be a pleasure, not a problem. So take the time to enjoy food with your children. Taste it of course, but don’t neglect your other senses. Go on – play with your food!

citybus launches its new blueflash service to tavistock Plymouth Citybus has launched its new premium ‘BlueFlash’ service between Tavistock and Plymouth. The seven-day a week Service 12 was unveiled at the beginning of October and features the distinctive new blue livery. The four vehicles involved make up a £1m investment by Plymouth Citybus in the fleet that will service the route. A special event was held at the Piazza in Plymouth’s city centre at the end of September to mark the unveiling of the buses and the new service. The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Cllr Vivien Pengelly and the Tavistock Town Mayor, Cllr Harry Smith. The cutting of a cake made by local cake company Mr Buns, replicating one of the buses kicked off the day. The new premium double deck buses feature leather seating, increased leg room, on board free Wi-Fi and more designated space for buggies and wheelchairs. The buses are also wrapped in Citybus’ new premium brand ‘BlueFlash’ which was designed by local creative agency Bluestone 360. With the expansion to Tavistock, Plymouth Citybus have introduced a new zone to cover the area. Dayrider tickets are priced at just £4.20, seven day tickets are priced at £18 and monthly tickets £59. These tickets allow passengers to hop on and off of any Citybus service for a day, a week or a month.
Citybus have also introduced child and student tickets at £3.50, £15 and £50 respectively, available to those 18 and under or 22 and under in full time education. All the tickets are available via many channels, including the Plymouthbus mobile ticket app for smart phones. If passengers just want to travel on the ‘BlueFlash’ route they will also be able to purchase a seven day ticket for just £15, available from the driver or the mobile app. This allows seven days travel on the ‘BlueFlash’ service only.

busy times and looking Wow! What a busy few months it has been here at the Garden Centre and the building mess has finally come to an end! Our coffee shop extension has opened this month which has been very exciting. I really want to say a huge thank you to all the customers who have continued to use the coffee shop and supported us despite noise and disposable plates and cups! I have hung up my hard hat and yellow high viz jacket ready for January and our refurbishment of the existing building.

I can honestly say that despite stressful moments I have really enjoyed this project, learned an incredible amount and feel a real sense of achievement. All we have to do now is work out how to use all the fancy new equipment. Roast lunches here we come! I have put a few pictures together of some of the early stages of the build so you can see how it started back in July. Although busy we have found time to set up for Christmas – yes, the Christmas shop is open and also I have been out picking trees on Dartmoor. Check out the pictures - yes it did rain! You may notice I had my ‘keep the spiders away’ stick. I am petrified of them and even more so now with the hype about the false widow. So back to gardening here are Derek’s tips for this month: I am off to cook roast beef and grab myself a snow board before they sell out! derek’s gardening tips Well the days may be getting shorter and the nights longer, with the temperatures steadily cooling off, the gardening is preparing to rest for the winter months.

However, there are a few plants that really come in to their own this month and November is their month to shine. Traditionally, November can be a damp month, with a crisp feel to the air and lower light levels, but this just adds to the intensity of changing colour and makes plants blaze and glow. The ground is also still warm enough to get things planted and settled before the onset of winter, so it’s the perfect opportunity to get out into the garden and plant a little bit of winter colour.
Derek helps choose Christmas trees
hellebores.
The conditions are perfect for planting evergreen herbaceous perennials, as these take very quickly and make a great show by spring. The evergreen foliage creates interest in the garden when there is very little else around, and the foliage blocks out light for weed seeds to germinate in the spring. Those that are ground hugging or ground covering plants are even more effective at blocking out weeds. The earliest to flower are the
Hellebores (sometimes known as the Christmas or Lenten rose) are excellent shade loving, perennial garden plants with elegant flowers. The flowers are perfect for brightening up those difficult shady areas during late winter and early spring. Hellebores are available in a wide range of flower colour from white, to pink, yellow, deep maroon and speckled, in single or double forms. The evergreen foliage is also very architectural and extremely useful for providing interest and colour where most plants struggle to grow. To get the best from your Hellebores, grow them in rich, well-drained soil. They prefer to be grown in dappled shade, but will grow quite happily in deeper shade or in a slightly sunnier position as long as the don’t dry out. Avoid planting them in very dry or waterlogged soil and incorporate some fresh compost into the planting hole to give them the best start. They grow to a height of 45cm (18ins) with a spread of 60cm (24ins). Bergenia is another evergreen perennial that was considered to be a tad boring and perhaps even old fashioned, but it has been gaining in popularity in recent years because of it’s reliability, low maintenance needs and it’s ability to grow well in poor conditions. They have large rounded, leathery leaves that are best described by their common name of elephant ears. They form neat, dense clumps, ideal for growing beneath trees and shrubs or as a foil for other plants. The leaves turn to shades of red and burgundy in autumn and winter and intensify as the weather turns colder. They add interest and vibrancy to those areas of the garden where most things struggle to grow. Bergenias thrive in almost any conditions and will even grow

happily in dry shade. In spring, the flowers emerge in clusters on stout stalks above the foliage. The colour varies depending on the variety, but are generally in shades of pink or white. They will grow to a height of 45cm (18ins) with a spread of spread of 60cm (24ins). A very reliable perennial with an extremely long flowering season is Erysimum Bowle’s Mauve, a plant that every garden should have. It manages to flower almost all year long apart from in the depths of winter. This is a vigorous plant reaching 75cm (2ft6ins) in height with a spread of 60cm (2ft). It has bluey, green foliage and likes a good sunny aspect with well-drained soil. It produces vast quantities of mauve flowers held on long stalks above the foliage, that lend themselves to many different planting combinations and attracts a whole host of insects. It is an extremely versatile plant, equally at home in the garden or in a pot.
Heucheras form neat mounds of leaves and can be used as ground cover, companion planting to add accents or complement colour schemes and flowers, they can be grown in pots or in the garden. Heucheras will grow in most soil types and can grow in either sun or shade. The paler varieties will thrive better in shadey conditions. They give the garden excellent interest all year round, especially in autumn and in winter with their evergreen leaves. They will grow to approximately 30cm (12”) in height and 45cm (18”) in spread. For evergreen foliage Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) is hard to beat for autumn colouring. The shrub retains its leaves all year, but in autumn it transforms its bright green leaves and turns a vibrant reddish-purple. The brilliant foliage colour remains throughout the winter and well into spring. Nandina also produces clusters of small white flowers that are followed by attractive bunches of red berries in late summer, which are a great winter treat for birds. For best results it should grown in partial shade in moist but well drained, preferably acidic soil. It does well as a specimen in pots and is also happy in the garden. It has a height and spread of approximately 1-1.5m (3ft -5ft). There as a new dwarf variety called Nandina domestica Obsessed. It has a height and spread of 60cm (2ft), so is ideally suited to container growing and makes an unusual and beautiful low hedge. The new foliage emerges deep red in spring and remains so for a good length of time before maturing to a rich green with age and turning coppery red in the autumn. So once again thanks everyone for your support over the last few months. We hope you enjoy the new facilities and we look forward to seeing you soon. Happy Gardening Fiona and Derek
A group of plants that has a lot to offer, but Erysimum Bowle’s Mauve require very little care or maintenance are the Euphorbias. It is in late autumn and winter that evergreen plants of good structure come into their own, when everything else around them has died back. None of the evergreen perennials are more elegant and uncomplaining than the euphorbia family. The stout stems of evergreen foliage stand proudly even in the bleakest of weather and when the plants get covered in frost they take on an ethereal quality. Euphorbias are an extremely versatile group of plants that can cope with a wide range of growing conditions. A great variety for growing in a shadey site as well as in sun is Euphorbia purpurea. This is good choice for poor, dry soil. Euphorbia Purpurea has dark purple foliage that contrasts well with its lime green flowers that emerge in spring. It makes a good evergreen backdrop to woodland plants or other shade-lovers. In heavy shade the foliage may fade to green. It’s also a good variety for large winter containers. It grows to a height or 30cm (12ins) with a spread of 60cm (2ft). Another beautiful and incredibly useful variety is Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow. It is equally as versatile as Euphorbia Purpurea, and equally suited to garden or pot growing. The main differences are that Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow is taller growing. It grows to a height of 90cm (3ft) with a spread of 75cm (2ft6ins). It has grey, green foliage with a lime variegation and red tips, taking on more pinky red tones in the leaves during the colder months. The flower bracts also have a similar variegation in the spring. An increasingly popular ground cover plant are Heucheras and Heucherellas. They are invaluable plants for autumn colour, but are also great throughout the year. They are available in a wide variety of colours and are extremely versatile. They come in reds, greens, acid yellows, coppers, plum, black, silver, marbled, speckled, veined and much more.
