city deal is

great news for plymouth and the rest of the south west 2014 has started with some extremely positive news for Plymouth. There was a glowing new year report from the City Council which underlined the success of its economic growth policies during 2013. According to the City Council over 2,500 new jobs were created last year, helped by a two per cent rise in new businesses and leading to a two per cent drop in youth unemployment. The city’s drive to grow the vital tourism and leisure sector led to a staggering 5.6 million visitors coming to Plymouth. On top of this the City Council secured investment of £216m for Plymouth including schemes such as Higher Home Park, a mixed use leisure proposal worth £50m and a Marine Industries Production Campus at South Yard, worth £63m. This positive news was followed on January 17 with the historic signing of the ‘City Deal’ which over the next 15 years will not only benefit Plymouth, but also the whole of the South West Peninsula. The Government finally gave the green light for City Deal which could lead to the creation of over 10,000 jobs, growth for 25,000 businesses and Plymouth’s South Yard open for business. The deal could see £296 million pumped into the region over the next 15 years and ensure that the South West Peninsula is firmly established as the UK’s heart of marine technology and research. As well as Government funding, tens of millions of pounds of private sector investment will help provide a huge boost for the local economy in the years ahead. All this is welcome news, particularly in view of Plymouth’s dependence on public sector jobs, which will continue to be under pressure as the Government’s spending cuts continue to bite. City Deal is good news and will undoudtedly lead to many new businesses setting up in Plymouth - which can only benefit the thousands of young people who will be looking for employment in the coming years. We have a feature on City Deal on page 50. Hope you enjoy the latest issue

award-winning zoe reveals: plymouth is best place to grow business A couple who have built a highly successful e-commerce and web development business in the Home Counties have returned to Plymouth to launch their second branch.

It was while working for the company in Woking that Zoe met Chris, who is also a software engineer.

Zoe Ashby was born and educated in Plymouth, and after graduating from Plymouth University with a computing degree, joined Brittany Ferries as a software engineer.

Romance soon blossomed and the couple settled down together - but they faced a big setback when they were both made redundant. While Chris found another job, Zoe decided to work from home to start her own web design business.

“Plymouth was totally different in those days and most of my university friends were moving up to London to get better jobs, said Zoe. In 2000, after three years with Brittany Ferries, she decided to follow the same path and took a job in Surrey working for an IT company.

The venture prospered, extra staff were taken on and Chris later joined Zoe in running the business which is called b:web. The Surrey-based operation employs seven staff and specialises in e-commerce

Zoe is not only well-known in business circles in Surrey, but has also won a business woman of the year award and appeared on TV and in magazines to talk about the challenges of running her own business while bringing up a young family. It’s a real family operation with Zoe’s 22 year old daughter Naomi having worked for the company since she was 14. She has grown from an admin role into a fully fledged front end website developer and was recently promoted to web manager. Although based in Surrey, Zoe and Chris – who have four children of their own aged from three to eight – regularly returned to Plymouth to see her parents and grandparents, who live in the city. “We always come down for the fireworks in August and travel down to see family three or four times a year,” said Zoe. “We have been thinking about moving to Plymouth for about three years and decided to take the plunge towards the end of last year,” said Zoe. They have purchased a home in Peverell and spent the last few weeks settling their children into two local schools. “We believe Plymouth has so much to offer us as a family and a business. There is a fantastic mix of businesses and business people in the area and a huge variety of creative resources available,” she said. “We’re delighted that Naomi – who is now married and expecting her second child – will be moving to Plymouth soon to join the b:web team here,” added Zoe. As part of their recent growth Chris and Zoe took over and now run an online business www.babyface.uk.com, which specialises in children’s bedding, gifts and wooden toys. The busy couple share the daily school runs between them and are now both focused on securing new clients in the Plymouth area. “We already have a couple of projects under way and will be busy spreading the word about what b:web has to offer,” said Chris. “We will be offering some free marketing workshops in the next couple of months when we hope to show local businesses just how they can grow their sales through e-commerce and online marketing.” Zoe added: “We’re really looking forward to meeting people from the Plymouth business community - and firmly believe it is a great place to bring up our family.” For more information visit www.bwebsites.co.uk

sandra will guarantee guests a great reception

plymouth matters

Plymouth’s iconic Duke of Cornwall Hotel has strengthened its management team with the appointment of a new reception manager. Sandra Douskova is well-known in the Plymouth hospitality scene having spent the last three years as an accountant at the Legacy Hotel and prior to that having held a senior post at the Astor Hotel. Her new role will not only involve overseeing the five-strong reception team at the Duke of Cornwall, but also a range of sales and marketing activities, including maximising the hotel’s accommodation revenues. Sandra, who is 30, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be part of the Duke of Cornwall team. It is a fabulous hotel which has a proud heritage and represents the very best of the independent sector. “I had obviously visited the hotel in the past, but I was overwhelmed with what I saw when I was given the grand tour of the Duke of Cornwall after my appointment. “It really does offer guests a unique experience. Unlike the large brands and chains, the Duke has more than 70 beautiful en-suite guest rooms and suites, each with its individual identity and style.

Happy Valentines Day!

Sandra Douskova...enjoying her new role at the Duke of Cornwall

“The continued investment in upgrading the hotel’s rooms is undoubtedly one of the reasons for its success and is a tribute to the hard work of the team over the last few years.” Sandra added: “As the main point of contact with guests, reception is undoubtedly the heart of the hotel. Whether that contact is face-to-face, by phone or e-mail, first impressions are vitally important and I want to ensure that our guests are given the very best service at all times. “We have visitors from all over the UK and the rest of the world and we want to ensure that their stay in Plymouth is memorable.” Jon Morcom, director of the Duke of Cornwall said: “Sandra’s appointment is extremely important for us. She brings a wealth of experience in the hotel and leisure industry to the business and has already made an impact. “She will be playing a key role in the future marketing of the hotel and is also tasked with responsibility for ensuring we maximise our accommodation revenues. “Sandra will be meeting existing and new clients to discuss their needs and experiences and will also be responsible for promoting our Select Card, which offers an exclusive membership for our most valued customers.” Meanwhile the Duke of Cornwall is gearing up for romance in February with a special Valentine’s Dinner on Friday February 14.

new venture will encourage enthusiasts to create arts and crafts A new venture offering a wide range of arts and crafts workshops has been launched in Plymouth.

Joining Penny in the venture is Kate Hughes, who teamed up with Interiors Hyde Park in October, initially to help with the admin side of the business.

Create Studios at 61, Hyde Park is the brainchild of Penny Richings, who also owns Interiors Hyde Park, located just a short walk away.

Kate, who has held a lifelong interest in upholstery, sewing and other crafts said: “I grew up surrounded by arts and crafts as my mum ran art galleries and antique shops.

Penny explained: “We have been running creative workshops at our Interiors Hyde Park shop for some time, but the big growth in demand meant that we needed to find additional space.

“When Penny invited me to help with Create Studios I was absolutely delighted. We’re really looking forward to an exciting - and creative - year ahead.”

“With business at Interiors growing all the time we literally ran out of space to run our workshops comfortably.

Interior designer Amy Fewtrell, who manages Interiors Hyde Park, will also be assisting with the new venture.

“The premises at 61, Hyde Park became available at the end of last year and we decided to take the plunge and set up the new business called Create Studios there to focus entirely on workshops.”

Kate said: “The workshop programme will teach skills such as cushion making, screen printing, curtain and blinds, lampshades, upholstery, floristry, millinery, textile art and much, much more. We are very open to ideas and would love to meet like minded creative people!

The first workshops were run just before Christmas and Create Studios now offers a comprehensive range of creative workshops. They are designed to appeal not only to people who are enthusiastic amateurs, but also others who want to learn new skills as a means of potential income. “Before we launched Create Studios, most of our workshops were limited to evenings and weekends. Now we have dedicated space available we will be introducing more and more daytime courses,” added Penny.

“We will also be running regular workshops to introduce people to the delights of Annie Sloan chalk painting. These workshops have proved particularly popular in the past and we will continue to run more throughout 2014.” A special introduction to sewing course is planned for May when, over four evenings, participants can learn more about embellishment, appliqué, embroidery and patchwork.

slow cooked lamb shoulder with root veg, barley salad and homemade mint sauce Serves Six (plus there’ll be leftover meat) Preparation time 20 minutes Cooking time 6 hours 15 mins 2 carrots, roughly chopped; 1 onion, cut into wedges; 2 bay leaves oil for frying, eg. rapeseed 2.2kg lamb shoulder 1 head of garlic; rosemary sprigs 1kg mixed root veg; a few thyme sprigs 250g pearl barley 800ml stock oil for roasting, eg. light olive large bunch fresh parsley, chopped For the mint sauce: 20g fresh mint leaves; 2 tsp caster sugar; 2 tbsp white wine vinegar good pinch fine sea salt Preheat the oven to 120ËšC. Put the carrots, onion and bay leaves in a roasting tray that will fit the lamb fairly snugly. Heat a large frying pan with a bit of oil and brown the lamb on both sides. Remove it and lay on the veg in the tin. Cut small slits in the lamb and poke in some whole garlic cloves and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper. Pour 100ml water into the bottom of the pan, cover tightly with foil and bake for 4 hours. Peel and chop the root veg into 2cm dice, put in a roasting tin and toss in just enough oil to coat. After the lamb has been in the oven for 4 hours, put the veg in the oven and roast it for 2-2½ hours, until tender. Once the veg goes in, make the mint sauce. Mix all the ingredients with 3 tbsp boiling water in a small bowl. Cook the barley after the veg has been in for an hour. Put the stock and barley in a saucepan and simmer for 35-40 mins, until tender but still with some bite. Drain and keep to one side until the veg is ready, then mix the root veg with the barley and parsley, seasoning well. Skim the fat off the lamb juices and use the leftover sauce for gravy.

food lovers unique view of fishing A new experience trail for food lovers has been launched at Sutton Harbour, which explores the maritime heritage of the harbour and shows visitors how local fresh fish gets from sea to plate. The F.I.S.H (Fish In Sutton Harbour) trail has been launched by new company Graze & Flavour in partnership with Sutton Harbour and Plymouth Boat Trips, and in December the first group of foodies were able to try out the trail. The trail includes a visit to Plymouth Fish Market, the second largest in England, where Harbour Master Pete Bromley shows guests around the market, its fish and the auction, lifting the lid on the 20-minute chill chain, sustainability and why the South West industry is growing while others are in decline. After a walk around Sutton Harbour on the Harbour Heritage Trail, skipper Colin of Plymouth Boat Trips will explain navigational charts and discuss over a bacon buttie how the forecast is looking, before guests have the chance to fish in the historic waters of Plymouth Sound. Chef Jay Hutchins from the Boathouse Café then gives guests a lesson on how to prepare their fish and let them have a go themselves, before cooking their catch and showing the best way to enjoy Plymouth’s freshest fish.

Dignity in care...

caring matters

February is a national awareness month to promote dignity in care. Waypoints care home manager Tessa Marriott explains how we can all ensure dignity is respected all year round. To treat someone with dignity is to treat them as being of worth, in a way that is respectful of them as valued individuals. When someone is being cared for their dignity can be promoted or compromised by their physical surroundings, the attitudes of those looking after them and the way care activities are carried out. The responsibility of maintaining dignity falls on carers, whether they are family members or health professionals. People with their dignity respected feel in control, valued, confident and able to make decisions for themselves. Everyone has equal worth as human beings and dignity shouldn’t be compromised because someone has dementia and may lack the ability to make decisions for themselves. At Waypoints all our staff are trained and expected to respect dignity of residents at all times by following these key principles: • Give as much choice and control as possible to those in our care • Communicate clearly with courtesy and crucially – listen and support residents to express their own needs and wants • Ensure personal hygiene • Encourage as much independence as possible whether it is safe free movement within the home environment or encouraging residents to make their own choices about their meals or which activities they would like to get involved with

to privacy which can be as simple as knocking on the door before entering a resident’s room or not having a sensitive discussion in a communal area • Recognise and effectively manage signs of pain, discomfort or distress It helps greatly to know how to spot the triggers and early signs when a cared for person is agitated, confused or needs reassurance. Dignity can be maintained by the response to changes in behaviour. For example, someone with dementia may be in a time or place different to what is the reality. If their perceived reality is a good place and they are happy what would be the benefit of jolting them back into reality or correcting them? As a Dignity Champion, Waypoints is supporting the ‘Dignity in Care’ campaign led by The National Dignity Council which aims to raise awareness about this issue. Supporters are asked to invite neighbours and friends to a Digni-Tea event this month to encourage dignity and compassion at the heart of care and communities. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, just a friendly informal opportunity to show isolated people they are valued and their health and wellbeing does matter.

Readers of the Plymouth Magazine are warmly invited to our Digni-Tea event on Tuesday 25th February at 11am in the Tamar Bistro at our St Budeaux home.

Delighted with first-class service After more than 40 years as a Ministry of Defence police officer Ian Reid had plenty to look forward to in retirement.

They have now protected their home for their four children and ensured that the process will be straightforward for them to benefit after they have departed.

He and his wife Pat had moved to Saltash more than 20 years ago after Ian was posted to serve at Devonport Naval Base. He retired five years ago with the rank of Chief Inspector and had time on his hands to think about the future.

David said: “The Home Protection Trust is ideal for Ian and Pat as it not only removes their property from the need for probate later on, but also provides all the protection they need for their children.”

Pat retired just over three years ago after working for the Regional Development Agency in Plymouth for more than 10 years.

Three of the couple’s children are serving police officers - two of them with the Ministry of Defence.

They decided it was time to update their wills to ensure their four grown-up children were properly provided for in the event of their deaths. Seeing an advertisement in a local magazine they contacted David Richardson of Richardson Legal Services to instruct him on preparing their new wills. Ian said: “David was extremely professional in his dealings with us, explaining everything very clearly and precisely. We were delighted with the service he provided.”

Ian and Pat Reid...delighted with the professional advice provided by Richardsons Legal Services Last year Ian saw that Richardsons Legal Services were recommending the advantages of Home Protection Trusts in their advertisements and decided to find out more.

Their son David has also benefited from the professional service provided by Richardsons Legal Services.

Ian said: “David had done such a firstclass job with our wills that we had every confidence in him and asked him to visit us at Saltash to discuss how Home Protection Trusts could benefit us.

“When David volunteered for a spell of duty in Afghanistan training the local police force, Mr Richardson kindly came to our home to meet David and was able to create a will for our son to sign before he departed for Afghanistan,” said Ian.

“Once again David explained all the details very clearly and we decided to go ahead,” said Ian.

Plymouth Pavilions are kicking those winter blues into touch with the announcement that Lee Evans will now play a massive six nights in Plymouth this August. The popular funny man is adding another date to his already sold out run of five nights, breaking his own records at the city centre venue! Established as one of Britain’s best-loved and biggest comedy stars, Lee Evans has captured audiences’ and critics’ imaginations with his irrepressible physicality and disarming charm, and this is nowhere more true than right here in Plymouth. Lee was last in the city in 2011 warming up for his epic Roadrunner tour seeing him tour over 50 dates in the UK. That time around he spent five nights in Plymouth, a record that wasn’t topped until Michael McIntyre rolled into the city to warm up for his 2012 UK and Ireland tour which saw him perform six dates at the Pavilions. The shows are set to bring an estimated 9,000 visitors from outside Plymouth into the city over the week long run, in addition to the 4,000 city dwellers also booked, meaning great things for the city’s tourism economy at such a peak time this summer. Marketing Manager Dawn Sloggett commented: “It’s such a coup for us to attract the big names on the comedy circuit and we

six of the best as lee evans adds extra date are very excited about Lee adding a sixth date with us. “Realistically he is probably one of the only stand-up comedians on the circuit big enough to top Michael McIntrye’s six date run at the Pavilions in 2012, and the demand has been phenomenal! “Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans and Peter Kay make up the top three highest grossing stand up comedians and to have secured such long runs from two of them, rivaled only by their stints at the 02, is amazing! “Perhaps we’ll go on to complete the hat-trick with Peter Kay in the future and well and truly stamp Plymouth on the high profile comedy circuit!” Lee will be performing at the Pavilions from Thursday August 7 to Tuesday August 12. Tickets for his sixth date are on sale now. To book tickets contact the Box Office on 0845 146 1460 or visit www. plymouthpavilions.com where you can select your own seats and print tickets at home.

what’s on?

Artist Marie von Heyl will be giving a talk on her work on February 26 at Plymouth Arts Centre

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK and is being staged in Plymouth for the first time during February and March. Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth Arts Centre have collaborated to tour this exhibition to Plymouth for the first time and the works are exhibited across both venues. Plymouth Arts Centre will be showing all of the video works, including artists Neville Gabie, Marie von Heyl as well as wall-based works by Tim Patrick, Emma Vidal, Justar Misdemeanor and Jane Bustin. The exhibition is at Plymouth College of Art from February 10 to March 8 and at Plymouth Arts Centre from February 13 to March 9. The aim is to explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice. The exhibition this year reflects a broad range of approaches to drawing from pencil on paper to video work. The 76 artists were selected from over 3,000 entries by a panel that included Kate Brindley, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), Michael Craig-Martin RA, artist, Charlotte Mullins, art critic, writer, broadcaster and editor of Art Quarterly. The Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence and promoting contemporary drawing practice within the UK. The open exhibition is a platform for drawing practitioners to showcase their work alongside other leading contemporary artists in this field, and provides those selected with the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue and understanding about drawing for current and future generations. Jerwood Talks Throughout the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition at Plymouth Arts Centre and the Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, we will be hosting talks by prize-winning artists. Marie von Heyl February 26 at 6pm at Plymouth Arts Centre Berlin-based Marie von Heyl was awarded second prize in 2013 for her work titled Interior (Utopia). She works with film, drawing, collage and installation and will be talking about her practice with a focus on drawing as performance. An interest in interiors and mundane objects is central to her practice and her work is an attempt to catch them in the act of transcending their original context – when tables start moving and heirlooms assume a life of their own. Her work is a playful dancing around things, pointing at the unexpectedly beautiful, tracing the uncanny and tapping into the absurd. Karolina Glusiec March 5 at 6pm at Plymouth College of Art Karolina Glusiec (born in Poland and based in London) was the overall winner of the 2012 Jerwood Drawing Prize. She will be talking about her practice and how receiving this award has supported her career. Glusiec uses simple materials to explore particular thoughts and feelings or to describe a particular place or a person as sincerely as possible. She uses a combination of drawing and animation to make time-based expressive works and is interested in ideas of fragility, ephemerality and process and has recently been exploring the status of objects as recorders of memory. Advance booking is recommended to ensure your place at any of the talks on 01752 206114 Plymouth Arts Centre, 38 Looe Street, Plymouth 01752 206114 www. plymouthartscentre.org

property matters

oreston couple’s new kitchen is a contemporary delight Few homeowners are in the fortunate position of having a ‘blank canvas’ when it comes to deciding on the layout of their kitchen. But that was the situation for Pete Cleeve and Annette Meakin when they purchased a brand new detached house in Oreston. Their new home is one of two newly-built luxury houses, constructed on a former orchard at the rear of a large detached property in Oreston Road. “We first saw the property in May last year when it was pretty much a shell and decided that it was the house for us. But we didn’t finally move in until just before Christmas,” said Pete, a retired finance director. “As it was a new build we were able to have a lot of input into the layout of the property, especially when it came to the kitchen,” he said. “We visited a number of kitchen showrooms in Plymouth and Exeter, including KF Kitchens, who had already installed the kitchen in the other new home on the site. “We discovered that acquaintances of ours had also used KF Kitchens for their new

kitchen and they couldn’t recommend them highly enough. That, combined with the testimonials of other KF customers, was one of the main deciding factors in choosing KF Kitchens,” he added. Annette said: “We were particularly impressed with the massive range of kitchens on display at the KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Mill, but more importantly it was the fact that the KF team really listened to what we wanted. “They are not only hugely knowledgeable, but also give you lots of helpful advice and guidance.” Pete and Annette chose a contemporary styled kitchen featuring a mocca and ebony finish with quartz worktops supplied by Plymouth-based Mayflower Stone.

A large peninsula worktop not only features an induction hob and breakfast bar but also houses a nifty wine rack which keeps the white wine chilled and the red wine at room temperature! “We were impressed with the installation and the pragmatic way that Kevin, the fitter, approached the job,” said Peter. “It took around a week to complete and was ready for us to have our first Christmas dinner here.” The couple are so pleased with the service and quality of KF Kitchens that they will be having matching ebony storage units in their lounge and also bedroom units from the company. “We are really pleased with our kitchen,” said Pete, “and would have no hesitation in recommending KF Kitchens to other homeowners.”

plymouth’s rental market remains strong Plymouth’s residential rental market remains as buoyant as ever and that picture is unlikely to change significantly in 2014, according to one of the city’s longest-established residential letting agents. Richard Rabin of Town & Country Lettings said that the residential rental option continued to be popular with couples, families and single people alike. “Not many years ago there was definitely a stigma attached to renting a property, but that situation has changed significantly in recent years,” he said. “With the difficulties some people are facing in raising a deposit to obtain a mortgage, the number of people renting rather than buying a home has increased over the years, which has also led to more investors entering the buy-to-let market.” He said that this had led to a growth in the number of letting agents, some of whom were less than transparent with regard to fees and charges. “We strongly recommend that anyone who is considering renting a property should ensure that they are given a complete breakdown of all the charges that are involved. “At Town & Country we give a very clear breakdown of the fees, which cover areas such as referencing, set-up charges and administration fees - along with the usual deposits and rental pre-payments. “Fees have been a major issue in the residential rental market in the past and we have gone out of our way to ensure complete transparency with our tenants.” He said that, like most professional and well-established letting agents, Town & Country is affiliated to the Association of Residential Letting Agents, which sets down a strict code of conduct, as well as offering client money protection and redress schemes. “The letting industry is not currently subject to any government legislation, meaning that anyone can set up as a letting agent or manage a property on behalf of a landlord. Potential tenants should always ask if their agent is affiliated to a professional organisation such as ARLA,” added Richard. He said that Town & Country Lettings placed significant emphasis on ensuring that both tenants and landlords had a positive experience when using their services. As part of its ongoing commitment to professionalism and customer service Town & Country Lettings has published a five-point customer charter as well as providing clear points of contact for tenants and landlords. Cheryl Reuben, who has been with Town & Country for seven years, has been appointed as business development manager and is one of those responsible for ensuring that the agency responds positively to any issues or problems. There is also one member of the nine-strong team who is specifically responsible for dealing exclusively with maintenance issues. Cheryl said: “Our new charter includes provision of a named contact and details of the head of service enhancement representative.

resolving a complaint to ensure that they are completely satisfied with the outcome.” Richard encouraged any investors who were considering the buy-to-let sector to talk to Town & Country first. “We are happy to offer free, impartial advice to potential landlords,” he said. “We have a huge amount of experience of the local lettings market and know what rental levels are likely to be achieved, depending on the type of property and its location.

question of ageing for plymouth guild Plymouth residents aged 50 and over have an opportunity to make their opinions count in shaping a successful bid for up to £6 million funding over the next six years. The BIG Lottery funding would be targeted to provide a range of services and support for older people, reducing loneliness and isolation and improving their quality of life, as part of the Fulfiling Lives: Ageing Better intiative. In October 2013, Plymouth Guild was appointed to lead Plymouth’s bid for this funding, in partnership with ten other agencies in the city. Plymouth was just one among 100 local authority areas bidding for the funds. They succesfully got through to the second round, and are now down to the final 32 which are working hard to secure this funding. Competition is fierce, as only 15 to 20 awards will be made. “We believe Plymouth is in with a great chance,” commented Plymouth Guild’s chief executive George Plenderleith. “We have already identified some

of the needs of the older population through the Plymouth Fairness Commission interim report. “It shows that loneliness and isolation are key problems, and we want to work with the over 50’s to overcome this, and to introduce better access to support and services, in the coming years. “We really want to ask older people all over Plymouth what their views are, so that we can bid for funding for things that they actually want to have, and which they believe will solve some of the problems associated with older age.” One of the main ideas undergirding Plymouth’s bid is to set up a Social Enterprise*, run by and for older people. This group will represent and support older people, to: • Provide services to help people get involved in various activities across their communities • Provide support for people at risk of becoming isolated • Empower older people to make decisions about (and to design) the services on which the City Council, and others, spend money • Provide business opportunities for the provision of services and consultancy. “With the help of local people, we believe we can put forward a very strong bid supported by all the agencies that the Plymouth Guild is partnering with in this project. The ideas and needs of Plymouth’s older people are paramount in our thinking, as we want to prepare something that is of real value to them.” For your chance to have your say and to tell the Guild and their partners what you think about their ideas so far, and what else you think is needed to help you live life better, please answer the questionnaire on page 45 of this publication. Or, if you prefer to save a stamp you can answer online at www.surveymonkey. com/s/YM25G7S All people aged 50 and over who complete the questionnaire and provide their contact details (online or in the post) will be entered into a prize draw and could win up to £150 of store vouchers! (Please see the questionnaire for details) Over 50’s – this is your chance to have your say in shaping life in Plymouth for a better future for older people – Plymouth Guild and their partners would really like to hear from you. We have in the past mostly just booked a cruise and tended to make that the only part of the holiday, but now with ships sailing from ports throughout the world we have the capability to add stays in cities and resorts before and after the cruise even adding tours.

By Tracey Morris of Peter Goord Travel

Today we can offer a diverse range of cruise and stays, from a few nights in a city such as Venice or Barcelona followed by a Mediterranean or Aegean cruise, to a stay in Vegas followed by a cruise to Hawaii. We also have river cruises combined with a stay, such as the Mekong in Vietnam with nights in Saigon and Siem Reap or a stay in New York can be combined with a cruise to the Caribbean. All of these can be booked to suit your needs, with either the stay before or after the cruise. The main cruise lines have always struggled to offer these add-ons in an efficient and price competitive way because, if they’re honest, they’re more interested in filling their cabins than flights seats and hotels rooms. For this reason other operators have seen a gap in the market and are now offering cruises plus add-ons giving the travelling public a much more varied and exciting choice of holiday. I’m sure you’ve seen examples of these in the national press. To offer a clients a similar service Peter Goord Travel has become a member of Cruiseco, a company

If an itinerary is not on here please give us a call and we can try and put it together for you. Cruiseco are a successful Australian company which has decided to expand its business by choosing only a handful of specialist travel agents in the UK to sell their holidays. Their business has grown to a size where they now own two luxury river cruise boats that sail in Vietnam and will later this year launch one in Burma. Burma is one of the most up and coming cruise and stay countries. Also known as Myanmar, it may not be the first place that springs to mind for a cruise but it has much to offer. I thought it would be a good idea to give you some more information about this relatively unknown country that might whet your appetite for a future visit. Formally a British Colony, it was a major battleground during the Second World War after being invaded by the Japanese. After many years of conflict and unrest it is now a stable country, welcoming over a million tourists in 2012. The most popular tourist destinations in Burma are cities such as Yangon (formally Rangoon) and Mandalay, which is considered to be the centre of Burmese culture. The staples of Burmese cuisine are rice, rice noodles and curry. The curry tends not be as spicy as those from India or Thailand. Chinese, Indian and European food is

served widely in the tourist areas so for those with a less adventurous appetite you need not worry. The national language is Burmese, of which there are over 80 dialects. The written language uses amazing looking script based on ancient Indian characters. Many of the older generation still speak good English. Burma has a unique advantage, or at least I think so, over most countries in the world in that your mobile phone will not work. Burma does not have a ‘roaming agreement’ with any other country plus the internet is still in the development stage and is unreliable. For once on holiday you really can switch off from home and totally relax. The currency in Burma is the Khat (pronounced Chat) and comes in notes from 10 up to 10,000. The US dollar is widely accepted in larger establishments. Travellers’ cheques cannot be used in Burma. Burma is six and and a half hours ahead of GMT in winter and five and a half hours ahead during the summer. A visa is required to travel to Burma but this is not an issue as your travel agent or tour operator will be able to arrange this in conjunction with your holiday. The best months to travel to Burma will be October through to March as this is their dry season. March through to May is also good, but can get a lot hotter. Avoid June to September as this is their monsoon season. Buddhism is the dominant religion in Burma and over 85% of the population practice it. Every boy in Burma is expected to spend time as a monk. Now that you know a little about Burma, let me tell you about a fantastic trip on the CruiseCo Explorer. The Cruiseco Explorer is a purpose built river vessel which has been designed to sail specifically on the rivers of Burma. It is being built in Yangon, using the expertise of local communities. Cruiseco Explorer will be staffed by local staff only who will be able to share their knowledge of the area. It will take 56 passengers in 28 luxury cabins. All cabins will have either a French or full balcony and will have the full range of facilities expected on a cruise ship of this standard. For most of the year Cruiseco Explorer will operate seven night cruises between Prome and Mandalay with each itinerary offering two nights in Yangon and two nights in Mandalay making an 11 night package, fourteen and seventeen night itineraries will also be available. Cruiseco Explorer’s first sailing will be in October 2014. If you would like to order a copy of the brochure or would like any more information on this or any other fantastic cruise and stay then please contact me at Peter Goord Travel on 01752 364186 or by email to tracey@petergoordtravel.co.uk

Here in the UK, proms first started to figure in the end of year celebrations around the turn of the millennium. Since then they have become more and more elaborate. Stretch limousines, the customary celebration ball and - of course - the obligatory prom dress all add to the mounting cost of the occasion. When it comes to choosing the dress – the most important decision for the girls – here’s some helpful advice from Bev Saunders of Bee Bee Gowns. “These days proms are virtually like mini-weddings with a pretty big price tag,” said Bev. “And it is all too tempting to try and cut corners when it comes to choosing the dress. “A lot of girls – no doubt encouraged by their parents – look on the internet, see what they think is the dress of their dreams and end up hugely disappointed when it arrives. “We have had some absolute horror stories of dresses being the wrong size or colour and very often the standard of manufacture is poor. Import tax may also be payable on dresses purchased on the internet which means they can often work out more expensive than those bought in England at a specialist dress and gown retailer. “The pictures of six foot tall, size 8 models featured on websites can also be extremely misleading.” She said that pastel colours and chiffons are especially popular this year, but there is much more to choosing a dress than the colour or material.” Bev said: “There are so many factors which need to be taken

Want to make the most of your retirement? into account when choosing a prom dress. Skin tones, hair colour and body shape are all vitally important in selecting the perfect dress. “At Bee Bee Gowns we have years of experience helping customers of all ages to choose the right dress and proms are no different. “We have a great selection of exclusive designer prom dresses ranging in price from less than £130 to around £340. We also offer payment terms to spread the cost. “Designer dresses not only look stunning, but because of the quality they also lend themselves to being altered so that they can be used time and again. Full length dresses can be shortened to make a stylish cocktail dress,” she added. Bev said that some girls order their prom dresses as much as a year in advance to ensure they get the dress of their dreams. “We have a good number of exclusive prom dresses still available, but they are selling fast. We are getting increasingly busy now, particularly on Saturdays. “We would encourage mums and daughters to come after school to avoid having to wait too long to be served. We are open until 6pm from Tuesday to Friday and look forward to serving you.” Keep up to date with trends and availability by checking the Bee Bee Gowns page on Facebook. Apprentices from Babcock’s Devonport Royal Dockyard facility in Plymouth are taking part in this year’s Brathay Apprentice Challenge. The Brathay Trust is a charity with the mission to improve the life chances of children and young people. Their Challenge, supported by the National Apprentice Service aims to find the UK Apprentice Team of the Year for team building, leadership, logistical and communications abilities. The Babcock team, comprising three Electrical, three Fabricator and three Mechanical Apprentices, will compete in a series of work-related challenges to develop new skills and benefit the local community, whilst raising the profile of their employer and Apprenticeships in general. The regional heats take place from January through to March 2014 and involve awareness raising activities and a specific community project. Team members are excited about the Challenge. Dominic Warne, electrical apprentice said: “During my apprenticeship I have already learnt new skills and met new people. I’m now looking forward to the Brathay Challenge and participating in fund raising and helping the community as part of a team.” Matt Walmsley, fabricator apprentice added: “Babcock apprenticeships offer far more than you might expect. Taking part in the Brathay Challenge opens many opportunities to improve life skills and co-operate with new people. Training for the challenge is being provided by Babcock in a fun and enjoyable way, providing stepping stones to a successful lifestyle and career.” The Babcock team’s activities will include participation in National Apprenticeship Week (which takes place between March 3 and 7).

This will involve local schools visiting the dockyard to give students an insight into what happens ‘behind the walls’. As well as visiting some key areas of the site, the students will take part in an engineering challenge, assisted by the team, which will provide an element of competition as they are tested on logic, dexterity and team working skills. And it should be good fun! The aim is to inspire some of the young people towards a career in engineering. This is the third year that Babcock Apprentices have taken part in National Apprenticeship Week with the previous two years proving to be a great opportunity for them to help those students interested in engineering to get a better understanding of what is involved in an Engineering Apprenticeship. The results of the regional heats will be announced in April. Eight teams will be selected to take part in further awareness and fundraising activities which will culminate in a logistical and team building adventure finale at the Brathay Trust’s Windermere headquarters in June 2014. The Babcock Apprentices taking part are in the second year of a four year Advanced Apprenticeship training programme and are all local to the Plymouth area. Their training comprises one day a week at City College Plymouth studying Level 3 City & Guilds in Engineering and four days a week developing their trade skills in workshops, warships and submarines around the dockyard site. Electrical apprentice Ryan Passmore is pleased with his career choice, he said: “Apprenticeships offer a great way to meet new friends, learn a trade and get paid

This year there are 100 apprenticeships available across electrical, fabricator, mechanical, pipe fitter, sail maker and higher Level trades. Babcock Apprenticeships provide all the knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in engineering. The company’s structured training programme and support, combined with a variety of rewarding tasks, equip their Apprentices to be the best in their field. Current apprentices are happy to endorse their training regime. Fai Jackson, fabricator apprentice said: “Babcock is a fantastic company to work

for and has provided me with an amazing apprenticeship. A company I am proud to represent. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I am looking forward to advancing as a fabricator. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who enjoys a challenge and wants a rewarding career.” Tom Ferguson, mechanical apprentice added: “So far I have worked on weapons and hydraulic systems which have been of great interest to me. There is no better way to learn than under real work conditions and the opportunities that Babcock offers are huge.” For more information or to apply for a Babcock Apprenticeship, visit the Babcock website at: www.BabcockInternational.com/DevonportApprentices. city deal will deliver of jobs in plymouth and Over 10,000 jobs, growth for 25,000 businesses and Plymouth’s South Yard open for business - that’s now in the pipeline, thanks to the historic City Deal.

and will provide the marine sector with facilities to develop technology, manufacture and commercialise products and services. Tailored support services to small and medium- sized enterprises in this sector are also part of the proposal.

Cabinet Office in January pressed the start button on the Plymouth and South West Peninsula City Deal which could see £296 million pumped into the region over the next 15 years.

The knock-on effects for creating commercial facilities to South Yard are better links with marine assets across the peninsula, such as Falmouth and Appledore. It will capitalise on expertise and investment, supported by Exeter and Plymouth Universities, which has led to over £100m investment in unrivalled marine research and demonstration facilities including the Wave Hub, the world’s largest consented demonstration area for marine energy technology, the FaB Test nursery site in Falmouth, a world-class hydrodynamic test facility in Plymouth University’s Marine Sciences building and extensive research capability at Plymouth Marine Laboratories.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “City Deal has been a complex negotiation over many months. We needed to play to our strengths and to work out what we wanted from the Government as a peninsula and what we were prepared to commit to in return. The potential returns on this are staggering. Our time has come.” Through the deal, the peninsula will play to its strengths in the field of marine technology and research. With 14 per cent of the national marine supply chain based in the peninsula, 26,000 people employed in the industry across 12 sites and the location home to global companies such as Babcock Marine, Princess Yachts International, Pipex, Pendennis Ship Yard and Agusta Westland, the City Deal’s flagship proposal is to unlock land at South Yard in Devonport Naval Base. Following the signing of this deal Plymouth City Council and the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise will begin detailed discussions with the Ministry of Defence over potentially releasing land at South Yard, which could provide a prime location for the marine industry due to its close proximity to other companies in the sector and has access to deep water which is needed for marine research, development, and testing. In return, the peninsula partners will fund the development and infrastructure needed to clear the way for up to £60 million of private sector investment. The yard is one of the few sizable sites with deep water access in the South West

Substantial business support package Business growth support will be supercharged in the region of £24 million of private and public sector money to help existing businesses flourish here as well as attract new investors. initiatives which aim to give the next generation skills. The deal will see the biggest wage progression project in the country with career coaches and intensive support for young people to graduate from learner to earner, tackling the region’s higher than average percentage of young unemployed. Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, said: “The City Deal success demonstrates the value of partnership working, bringing together local government with business and harnessing the power of universities to unlock growth in Plymouth and the wider South West. “With our collective world-class research expertise, in particular here within our Marine Institute, together with our enterprise agenda we are well-placed to create a centre of excellence for marine renewables that will be relevant globally.” Over the last nine months representatives from local authorities, enterprise partnerships, universities, colleges and businesses have been working on the deal which culminated in a minister’s panel last month. The peninsula’s MPs have also backed the deal and lobbied at Whitehall.

Through the delivery of the City Deal, by 2030 will: • Create 9,500 jobs • Create a further 1,830 construction jobs • Generate Gross Value Added (GVA) of over £800m • £34 million of local and national public sector investment • Lever in £76 millon in private sector investment increasing to £266m in the longer term • The potential to release an initial 32,500 m2 of new marine space possibly increasing to 86,000 m2 of new marine workspace

• Assist 1,500 young people back into sustainable employment The figures: • To ensure that the deal is delivered, the partners in the peninsula will also invest including a £10 million investment from Plymouth City Council and Heart of South West LEP to support the Marine Industries Production Campus development at South Yard • To deliver this package, the peninsula is asking the Government for help to cut red tape and help in delivery, support and a contribution worth over £19m.

splash of colour with spring So January was wet and windy – but we are lucky compared to a lot! The wind seemed to be blowing in the right direction for us during the storms and we had no damage – just a few plants blowing around. The wall tends to protect us quite well. We have had our fair share of destruction in the past though. The garden centre is always quite dreary when it’s wet and cold, but then we have this lovely splash of colour from all the lovely winter bedding and prims! It’s a been a busy time here despite the weather: we have recently completed our coffee shop build, so the days of coping in extreme conditions to deliver the all-important coffee and tea cake are over! The team have really managed it all well and thank you to all the customers who kept coming despite our chaos. We really hope you enjoy the new facilities and menu options. There is a voucher in our advert within the magazine for you to use in the coffee shop this month.

Fiona Newton and Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre

So fingers crossed for a better year weather wise, a nice April, May and June would be good for gardening. Also now that we won’t be building we will have more events on this year and gardening workshops – something to look out for.

So what do we think 2014 will bring? What’s the next big trend in the gardening world? As far as flower of the year is concerned I think you will see poppies everywhere. With the centenary of the First World War poppies will be a good choice and I am

sure public gardens will feature them heavily. On the success of last year’s Proven Winner range we will be introducing lovely patio plants and planted pot recipes. Wildflowers, wildlife and bee friendly plants will be a strong theme again this year and as always grow your own will be popular. The James Wong Seed range is new and offers keen gardeners or foodies something different to try! Anyway back to February with its fresh, cool, days: here’s Derek’s thoughts. Derek writes: Despite the constant battering of the wind, heavy downpours and wintery showers we have had this winter, the temperature has been reasonably mild and above average for the time of year and this has helped to give some of our garden plants a bit of a head start for spring. Spring flowering bulbs have been up a little earlier than they should be.

The first to generally get up and going are the Snowdrops (Galanthus Nivalis). These are a much loved, old favourite that traditionally represent the end of winter and the beginning of spring. They can flower as early as January or as late as March depending on the season, but they generally come to their peak in February. The white hanging flowers are delicately scented and release a honey like scent that fills the air in warm days. They generally grow to a height of 15cm (6ins), depending on the variety, with the tallest being 22cm (8.5ins) and the smallest being 5cm (2ins). The spread after a few years can be between 30-60cm (1-2ft), but if left undisturbed they can form impressive carpets of white flowers in spring. Snowdrops can grow in most positions, but prefer a shaded to partially shaded position, ideally beneath shrubs or trees where they can be left undisturbed. They will grow in most soil types but prefer a soil that doesn’t dry out too much in the summer. Next to flower are the Winter Aconites (Eranthis Hyemalis). These spreading woodland plants appear shortly after or alongside Snowdrops. They are low growing, ground hugging plants that grow well beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, when they are bare, exploiting the winter sun and then dying back beneath the ground when they come into leaf.

Winter Aconites grow to a height of 10cm (4ins) and each individual plant has a spread of 10-15cm (4-6ft), but spread to form clumps and carpets through bulbs spread and setting seeds. They are incredibly hardy and easy to grow and make a great addition to any garden. Grow them in a partially shaded site in a reasonably fertile, moist soil for best results.

perfect for filling spring containers, as well as rock gardens or en masse under trees. You can also plant them direct into the ground to give little pockets of brightness and colour. They grow to a height and spread of 15cm (6ins), so plant them in groups for greater impact. Iris Reticulata grow best in well drained, soil in a position in full sun. Plant them deep and feed with tomato feed after they have finished flowering, to encourage flowering in following years. An extremely popular and reliable spring flower has to be the Crocus. These cheerful little flowers are robust, hardy and easy to grow. They perform well every spring regardless of the weather and will adapt well to most positions, from pots, borders, rockeries or naturalised through a lawn.

There are two main types of Crocus that are commonly grown and they are the Snow Crocus (Crocus Chrysanthus) and the Giant Crocus (Crocus Vernus). Both are very similar in appearance, but Crocus Vernus is a little larger with a height and spread of 1015cm (4-6ins) with Crocus Chrysanthus growing to 7.5-10cm (3-4ins). Crocus Chrysanthus also traditionally flowers about two weeks earlier than Crocus Vernus, but growing both varieties together will ensure a longer succession of flowers. They prefer a Narcissus tete a tete position in full sun in a well drained soil, but will cope quite happily in a shaded position. Daffodils are probably the most iconic of all spring bulbs and, in my opinion, the best of them has got to be Narcissus Tete a Tete. This little dwarf daffodil produces flowers from February to April and has one to threew flowers per stem in bright yellow. The bulbs produce several flowering stems each, which result in masses of flowers and excellent value for money. The bulbs also quickly multiply and create a fantastic display of golden-yellow flowers which are perfect to lighten up dark areas. They are easy to grow and Plymouth Garden Centre in Fort Austin Avenue,  Crownhill is open from 9am to 5.30pm weekdays and 10.30am to 4.30pm Sundays Tel: 01752 771820. www.plymouthgardencentre. co.uk the plymouth magazine
