return of popular jazz festival is boost for the barbican Lots of good news surrounding the historic Barbican this month. As a jazz lover myself I was delighted to hear that the Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival is returning in 2014. It left a big hole in the city’s cultural calendar last year when a lack of funds meant that the festival could not be staged. Now the festival is back - and organisers are hoping that it will be the start of a new era for the colourful and entertaining event. Potential developments in the future could see the festival expand out to The Hoe and Royal William Yard. By partnering with the big single-handed yacht race La Figaro Du Soleil and supported by funds from the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and the City Council, the festival is back again between June 13 and 15. Let’s hope the sun shines throughout the weekend and thousands turn out to support this brilliant musical extravaganza. You can read more about the event and plans for the future on pages 28 and 29. Another popular attraction is also returning to the Barbican: the swashbuckling Pirate Weekend is taking place over the weekend of May 10 and 11. It’s a massive attraction for families, with the youngsters having the chance to dress up and experience what life is like as a pirate. Last but by no means least in the Barbican good news bulletin is that work is now under way on extending and upgrading the iconic Cap’n Jaspers eatery. It’s been one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks for more than 35 years and we talk to the current owner Georgie Curtin – daughter of Jaspers founder John Dudley – on page 14 of this issue. We also thought it was such an important story that we decided to mark the news by featuring Georgie and her beloved Cap’n Jaspers on the front cover. talented pair launch creative workshops for kirstie allsop fans Two women who became friends after working together at a business in the Barbican have launched a new creative enterprise in the city.

Sarah, who is 27, said: “We realised that between us, our crafty knowledge covers a whole host of creative specialisms. Together we share a desire to teach such skills to people locally.”

Rosie Drake-Knight and Sarah Hill first met last year while working part-time at Rockets & Rascals. Rosie runs the cafe and Sarah works on the admin and accounts side of the business.

Rosie added: “Although there is a strong creative community in Plymouth, and certainly wider Devon, we wanted to produce an access point for people who just want to have a bit of fun by making something great.”

They are both talented graduates who have a wide range of creative skills and now they have pooled their talents to launch a range of contemporary craft workshops.

Along with knitting, embroidery, print, floristry, and Mother’s day gift courses, MAKE Devon offers DIY wedding workshops, teaching participants all they need to know to home-make their special day.

In her spare time Rosie, 23, is a textile designer and illustrator having taken a degree at Falmouth University. Sarah gained a jewellery diploma in London, designs knitwear and is also working towards a master florist qualification. Rosie said: “After meeting at Rockets & Rascals we started to socialise and quickly realised that we both shared a passion for arts and crafts. “After a typical evening of crochet and cake we hit on the idea of running a different kind of creative project.” They have established ‘MAKE Devon’, running a range of exciting creative workshops with Kirstie Allsop fans and the DIY generation in mind. Their relaxed and informal courses allow local crafters to learn new skills and take home a hand made creation.

Sarah said: “We like our makers to feel relaxed so all of our classes include unlimited tea and cake and bags full of patience. Gift vouchers are available for classes and we welcome all skill levels, beginners to veteran crafters!” They have promoted their new workshops at craft fairs, vintage fairs and other events. Sarah has also run pop-up florists at different venues. They have made the most of social media to spread the word and have been encouraged and supported by their families, friends and work colleagues. Forthcoming workshops include creating an Easter Table Runner (April 17); Easter Floral Table Centrepiece (April 18) and two three week courses covering an introduction to embroidery and knitting in May and June.

According to one of the top bridal magazines, the average wedding in the UK now costs well over £24,000 with the bride’s dress typically costing around £1,350. However, many couples have to work with a much smaller budget, according to Bev Saunders of Plymouth’s Bee Bee Gowns. “There’s no doubt that some couples prefer to spend less on their wedding and save the money for a deposit on their first home together,” she said. “We find that there is plenty of demand for off-the-peg wedding dresses, especially with made-to-measure wedding dresses taking anything from six to nine months for delivery. “A lot of couples have to work with much shorter timescales in terms of planning their wedding, such as people serving in the armed forces.” Bev said that Bee Bee stock exclusive designer wedding dresses up to size 30 everything for the petite through to the fuller figure. “Although they are designer dresses the prices are extremely affordable from just £199 up to £499 and certainly comparable to High Street prices. Christmas and New Year are behind us, and many of us will be looking forward to Easter and the hope of better weather and longer days, giving us more time to do the things we enjoy and to spend time with the people we love. Time with our family and our friends people who mean so much to us and who we know love us in return and always have our best interests at heart. However, in an effort to protect the vulnerable, the law states that should you become mentally incapable of making your own decisions, then it is the job of the “system” to protect you against any, and all, persons who may wish to take advantage of your position. This includes your own family. Thus, if you were to fall and hit your head (as happened to Jacqueline Barber), your family would have no legal right to decide on what care you should receive. Jacqueline died in care as her daughter battled in the courts for the right to take her mother home and look after her. If you were to be diagnosed with dementia and placed in a care home, your family would not be able to remove you, even if they felt you were being mistreated. Well they could, but they may be met a few days later at the front door by policemen with a battering ram and a court order to forcibly return you to the care home - as happened to Betty Figg. The legal system is to be commended for their efforts to protect the vulnerable, but

unfortunately it does not have the time or the resources to make accurate judgements on every case in a timely fashion. So, should you become incapacitated, either through ill health or through an accident, the law requires that your family lose all rights and a “deputy” may be appointed as a neutral third party to manage your affairs. Your joint bank accounts, your property, and even decisions regarding the type of medical care you receive all become the remit of the court. For example a joint account is likely to be closed for all transactions other than for emergencies, until a deputy has been appointed. So while you may trust your friends and family to look after you, the law does not, and the only way to make sure your voice is heard is to have a Lasting Power of Attorney drawn up by a professional. With Spring in the air, we hope that this isn’t too depressing a read, but we believe that it is too important to wait - we hope you do too. - David Richardson -

8 cherry tomatoes, cut in ½ crossways good olive oil 3 eggs 200g purple sprouting broccoli, cut into even-sized pieces 150g stale sourdough or ciabatta, broken into chunky bite-sized pieces 2 tbsp capers 12 black olives handful of basil leaves lemon juice, to taste First, make the roasted tomatoes (you could make them in advance and store them in an airtight container in the fridge). Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper, place the tomatoes on the tray, cut side up, and drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast at 180˚C for 45 mins. Put the eggs in a pan of cold water. Bring to the boil and cook for 8-10 minutes, depending on size. Drain and refresh in very cold water to stop the edges of the yolks from turning grey. Toss the purple sprouting broccoli in a baking tray with a little oil to coat and season with salt and pepper. Toss the bread in oil on another tray and season. Roast at 200˚C. The bread will take 20-25 minutes or so to crisp up. The broccoli might take a little longer, depending on size; it should be just starting to brown and crisp up. Toss both half way through.

makeover cap’n Work to expand and upgrade Plymouth’s famous waterfront eatery Cap’n Jaspers started at the beginning of March. The café at Sutton Harbour, famous for its half-a-yard hot dogs and Jasperizer burgers, has become so popular with locals and visitors that it is growing in size to meet demand. A second serving area is being installed, facing the Mayflower Steps, and the existing serving area on the opposite side of the building will be revamped. Cap’n Jaspers will remain open while the work is being carried out. Each servery will open onto outdoor eating areas, covered by new permanent canopies made from zinc, steel and timber. Cap’n Jaspers was first opened in 1978 by John Dudley, affectionately known as ‘The Cap’n’, to raise money for the Barbican Regatta. The eatery started out as a DIY hut built from plywood and old hardwood doors which cost £200 to build, with rent of £10 a week paid on a goodwill basis to the Sutton Harbour Company. The current premises opened in May 1997, and has continued to attract many regular local visitors as well as tourists coming from around the world. Georgie Curtin, daughter of the late John Dudley and current owner of the business said: “It’s an exciting chapter for both Cap’n Jaspers and the wider Barbican. We’re doubling in size to meet demand but the menu, prices and character will remain the same. Planning permission was granted by Plymouth City Council to Sutton Harbour Holdings Plc, which owns the building and leases it to Cap’n Jaspers. The improvements to Cap’n Jaspers follow the opening of three new food outlets at Sutton Harbour during the past year. In the summer of 2012 Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish Sutton Harbour restaurant opened at the National Marine Aquarium; the real food kitchen opened on the opposite side of the Harbour, and later in the year they were joined by Quay Café at Pinnacle Quay. Plymouth Philharmonic Choir’s Christmas concert featuring the ever-popular Handel’s Messiah was a virtual sell out. For their spring concert at Plymouth Guildhall on April 6 the choir will be performing a less well-known work - Dvorak’s Stabat Mater. Conductor Christopher Fletcher said: “After the success of the Christmas concert it’s nice to do something not so well known. It’s vital for the life and future of the choir that we learn and perform pieces that are new and fresh to us and perhaps to our audience. “People may not know Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, but they are likely to be very familiar with the gorgeous melodies of his New World Symphony and Cello Concerto. This piece has similar hallmarks, with its exquisite easy lyricism.” Dvorak’s Stabat Mater is traditionally seen as a reaction to the death of three of the Catherine Hamilton composer’s children. These tragic events seem to have inspired this evocative musical setting of a text describing the suffering of a mother whose son is dying on the Cross. It is also a testimony of human sorrow and hope. Singing with the choir will be soprano Catherine Hamilton, mezzo-soprano Juliet Curnow, tenor Iain Milne and baritone Darren Jeffery. It will be staged at the Devonport Playhouse from May 13 to May 17 with evening performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Set in the Tower of London in the 16th century, this operetta has one of the finest scores Sullivan produced. The plot is more serious than usual, as the hero Fairfax is accused of sorcery by his cousin who will inherit his fortune unless Fairfax gets married. Enter a Jester and his maid who just might be persuaded to marry Fairfax for money as she knows he is about to be executed. The Fellowship has been invited to take the production to Yorkshire by the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. They perform it in the open air at Knaresborough on Sunday August 3 and the next day in the Harrogate Royal Hall as the Fellowship’s entry in the international competition. This exhibition of portraits will reveal Knight’s highly distinctive and vivid work, and also illustrate her success in gaining greater professional recognition for women in the arts. See a display featuring transcripts and images of sketches by W O Reynolds, an artist, teacher and soldier from Lipson in Plymouth who served in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during World War I. scores of special events celebrate city’s unique heritage Plymouth’s second History Festival will take place in May, following the success of the first-ever event in 2013. Plymouth History Festival 2014 will take place from 1 to 31 May 1 to May 31 and aims to bring a number of historical events in the city under one banner. It’s a celebration of Plymouth’s unique heritage! This year’s programme features exhibitions, displays, family-friendly activities, talks, presentations, guided tours and walks plus a series of special events. Activities take place in many different locations including the city centre, the Hoe, the Barbican, the Royal William Yard, the Millfields and in many of the suburbs. Venues range from church halls and guildhalls to civic buildings and historic houses. Many events are free, although a number require advance booking. children’s holiday sculpture course at arts centre The human desire to use windbreaks to create a space of one’s own on a beach will provide the inspiration for children at a hands-on sculpture course. The theme of the course, run at Plymouth Arts Centre, is based on a forthcoming installation by artist Emily Speed. The work, by the 2013 Northern Art Prize nominee was filmed at South Milton Sands and the film shows the efforts of volunteers to create a temporary suburb from unwieldy windbreaks.

Family activities during the festival include Salty Seadogs at Elizabethan House on May 10 and May 11. Local musicians ‘Tobacco Road’ will play their sea shanties with visitors will be able to join in with some fun activities including decorating a giant cardboard pirate ship and pirate figures and make pirate hats. An early-evening walking treasure hunt for all the family is taking place in Plympton on May 15. Meet at Plympton Library at 6pm. The library is also the venue for a children’s quiz between 10am and 3pm on May 17 based on the local history exhibition on display at the library. Meanwhile Saltram House will host an event called Things with Wings on May 22. This is a fun tour for children aged 6-11 discovering decorative objects and paintings with a ‘wings’ theme in the house.

April alone will feature three fixtures with an afternoon meeting on April 1, a Saturday fixture on Easter Saturday April 19 and an evening fixture on Friday April 25. join the colourful making waves trail across the city A bright array of colourful fish have arrived in town! Sixteen beautiful sculptures of sunfish made from fibreglass have been set up as a tourist trail under the banner of ‘Making Waves’. The Making Waves project is an initiative led by the National Marine Aquarium and Plymouth University. Highlighting how apprenticeships can encourage young people across the city, companies, artists and communities have been given the opportunity to work together on this unique project. The result of pooling together skills and talent has produced an array of attractive sunfish statues. Amy Cooper, project manager for Making Waves said: “It was amazing to see all the sunfish statues when they came together in one place for the launch of the Making Waves trail. It’s brilliant to see everyone’s efforts come to fruition. “The statues themselves have been made locally – the project is a testament to the whole community coming together to create something special.”

Visitors and residents can follow a carefully thought out trail as they locate these beautiful sculptures installed around the city. The Making Waves project seeks to celebrate Plymouth – Britain’s Ocean City – as being a city of skills. Designed by Plymouth City Council apprentices, the sunfish were created as part of a national celebration to promote apprenticeships. Teams of Council apprentices designed each of the fibreglass sculptures which were then manufactured by Plymouth based Manuplus. They were then painted by specially selected Making Waves artists. Local South West artists, students and graduates of Plymouth University and Plymouth College of Art were involved in this creative process. Sponsors for the sunfish include City College, Plymouth Art College, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, and the 1,000 Club which seeks to help young people into employment. The trail, which will be active until September 2014, promises to provide an interesting route of discovery. Imagine the amusement, especially for youngsters to come across the next fish on the map! Lots of fun activities revolving around the sunfish will take place over the spring and summer. The end of the project will see the auctioning off of the trail’s sculptures to raise money for a Plymouth based Marine Conservation programme coordinated by the National Marine Aquarium. The places where the fish have been installed include North Prospect, Mount Wise, the Theatre Royal and Sutton Harbour. (See the full list below). active health, first aid training, healing oils and lots more besides! I have not written for the magazine for some time as I have been working on some exciting (to me anyway!) projects. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a really hectic few months for me, with the clinic now located at 15 Mary Seacole Road, The Millfields, Plymouth, PL1 3JY. Primarily this was for more space. In September 2013, I was successful in persuading the Active Health Group, Manchester, to allow me to teach their Level 5 Sports Therapy Diploma. This meant that I needed to find some premises. My wife, Katy, and I, looked at various places before we contacted the Millfields Trust. We looked at the conference rooms they have available and they seemed perfect, but then when we spoke more about what I did, Rosie (she works for the Millfields Trust and was showing us around), suggested we look at one of the units they had available.

We also run a free evening session on a Thursday, entitled Supporting and Training Therapists (SATT’s), this is for anyone to come along to see what we do, it is for therapists who want to meet other therapists, it is a place where people can share their ideas. In my latest session I will be looking at Osgood-Schlatters Disease and we have a young man with this issue coming in to be a case study. I hope that osteopaths and physiotherapists may want to come along to share how they assess or treat a particular condition, or any therapist for that matter. It is a free evening where there will be tea, coffee and biscuits and opportunities to meet and talk to other therapists and to practice our skills and learn some new ones. flooring specialist martin achieves his business dream A new wood flooring specialist company has been launched in Plymouth. Martin Pomeroy launched Pomdoo in March and is specialising in the sanding, refinishing and installation of solid, engineered and parquet wood flooring, both softwood and hardwood. For the last 10 years Martin has worked as a wood flooring specialist in the city and felt that 2014 was the right time to take the plunge and set up in his own right. “I have always wanted to work for myself,” said Martin, who lives in Chaddlewood. “The property market seems to be in a much more positive position and it looks like more and more people will either be moving home or improving their home. “There are so many period properties in Plymouth with original wood flooring that I feel confident there is room for another company like Pomdoo.” Martin has invested a five-figure sum in setting up Pomdoo, including state-of-the-art sanding equipment, new van and website. “It has taken up most of my savings so failure is not an option for me,” he said. “I will be giving the new business 100 per cent of my energy and my experience. “We use the latest 98 per cent dust free professional sanding equipment - not hire machines - and quality finishes such as Dulux Diamond Glaze, Bona Mega, Traffic and Naturale, as well as Osmo Hardwax Oils.

“I have always believed that if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. Second best is not an option for me. Everything I do is with an immense amount of pride and attention to detail. “For me working with wood is very rewarding. There’s nothing like walking away from a freshly restored or newly-fitted floor having transformed a room or a house into something special. “My work ethic is simple, do what you said you were going to do, when you said you would do it and for the price you said you would do it for!” Martin said that as well as sanding, resealing, colouring and staining, Pomdoo are proficient in bonding to concrete, over under floor heating systems (wet systems only), secret nailing and laying floating floors, using only quality adhesives, glues and materials. “We also carry out gap fitting using wooden fillets to restore Victorian and Edwardian flooring to its original glory.” Martin offers free estimates and all his prices are currently VAT free. “We feel this will enable us to offer extremely competitive prices.” In the long-term Martin hopes to expand the range of services Pomdoo offers to homeowners, including floor and wall tiling and other home improvements. important changes in visa regulations The travel industry has enjoyed a busy start to 2014, not only because of the appalling weather at home but a revival in the economy, which has left many people more confident about booking their annual holiday.

Following submission of your medical exam report and Subclass 600 visa application, the Embassy will contact you to confirm acceptance or refusal, but this process can take up to six weeks. I would therefore strongly advise anyone aged over 75 who is thinking of visiting Australia to plan well in advance as it is important to have your visa acceptance before you confirm and pay for your flights.

Travel booking trends can be affected in so many ways; civil unrest in destination countries, adverse weather conditions and even poor exchange rates. However, I personally feel that the state of our own economy and a general feel good factor has the greatest influence when we make that decision to part with our hard earned cash!

If your visa application is refused and your flights are already arranged, the cancellation charges can be substantial so it is essential that you follow the correct procedure. In previous articles I have highlighted the importance of ensuring the validity of your passport and checking that you comply with the correct health and visa requirements for the countries you are visiting.

The press has recently highlighted the difficulty and consequences facing parents with taking children out of school for holidays during term time. Up until recent guideline changes were implemented by the Department for Education, schools would reluctantly allow up to one week’s unauthorised absence during school term time for holidays.

I would like to start this month by informing you of two countries that have recently changed their visa rules and compliance with the new requirements that will be essential to avoid entry being refused at the border. We have been informed that, with effect from April 10, all travellers to Turkey must obtain a visa online prior to departure from the UK and will no longer be able to purchase a visa on arrival. Anyone travelling on a package holiday should have already received documents confirming the new rules from their travel agent or tour operator. However, some people who have booked just the flight only to visit family or stay in their own property may not be aware. All UK nationals who require a visa to visit Turkey must obtain this online from the special Turkish Government website – www.evisa. gov.tr before commencing their journey.

This gave parents an opportunity to book holiday dates that fell partially or entirely outside the peak school holiday times at a significantly lower price. However, the new guidelines stipulate very strictly that schools must no longer authorize any absence at all during term time and that fines should be imposed on families who choose to ignore these rules. Legal action may even be taken if the school considers the case to be serious enough. This has left parents in a very difficult position and it also leaves the travel industry in a Catch 22 situation; virtually everyone is demanding price caps on holidays and flights outside term time but this is traditionally the time of year when tour operators make their money.

The cost is $20 per person but be vigilant as there are already various other websites offering a visa application service for you and charging a higher price. These websites should be avoided as it is not necessary to spend any more than $20 and the entire application process can be completed quickly using the official site mentioned above. If you are unsure as to whether you need a visa, if you don’t have internet access or if you are having difficulty with the application process, you should contact your travel agent or tour operator and they will be happy to assist you.

Returning a reasonable profit during the peak summer months, at Christmas and at Easter is how many travel companies support the remainder of the season. As a parent myself who has often paid a hefty premium to travel in school holiday time, I completely sympathise with the difficult situation facing families as a result of the new rules.

Another country which has recently changed it’s visa requirements is Australia. We book many holidays and flights to various destinations throughout Australia for clients who are visiting friends and relatives or travelling on tours and cruises as part of a much larger itinerary.

Many other businesses charge extra for goods and services at particular times of the year to capitalise on good weather, events etc., and I feel that price variations in reflection to demand are essential for many organisations to remain viable.

Several years ago, the process of obtaining a visa for anyone travelling to Australia for leisure purposes was simplified by the introduction of an online application service. The visa was called an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA for short), was valid for up to three months and could be issued instantly online at a relatively small cost.

However, I feel that it would be completely unfair on the travel industry if legislation were introduced forcing companies to cap prices.This whole issue is created by a supply and demand situation, which exists in virtually every other commercially viable business sector.

Travellers of any age can still obtain an ETA but it has recently been brought to my attention that certain stipulations apply to people aged 75 and over so I contacted the Australian Embassy for clarification. They responsed that persons aged 75 plus must be in good health and of good character to enable travel to Australia on a valid ETA. If you suffer from ill health or have any pre-existing medical conditions, they recommend that you apply for a different visa called a Subclass 600. The difference with this particular visa application is that you are required to complete and sign a medical declaration form, which is then assessed by a department in the Australian Embassy who will either approve your application or advise that you should undergo a full medical examination by your local surgery. The cost of the Subclass 600 is $115 (Australian dollars), significantly more than the ETA, in addition to the cost of the medical exam, which can incidentally be done by the Nuffield Hospital in Plymouth for £150.

The good news for parents is that one particular tour operator has added a peak summer series of flights and package holidays from Bristol to Tunisia covering the entire school summer holiday period.

now’s the time to go potty Well, I think it is safe to say that spring has well and truly arrived. It has been a great start to the season with glorious sunny days throughout March, let’s hope that it is here to stay! Flowers, shrubs and trees are growing frantically and flowering their socks off. The spring colour will soon be over in a few weeks though, so it is time to start preparing for summer colour and crop growing. I’ll start with grow your own, as this is fast becoming an extremely popular part of garden life with more and more people having a go each year. We get many new gardeners coming into the garden centre who are often confused and and overwhelmed about growing their own fruit and vegetables, because they fear that it is tremendously difficult and that you need years of experience to grow your own produce. Actually, fear not. It is very simple and as long as you get a few basic things right at the beginning, it is very easy and rewarding.

Vegetables and fruits are no different from your basic bedding plants, you give them the growing condition they like, and they will romp away. The most important thing to consider is what you are growing them in. Most fruit and veg use up a lot of energy growing, so they need a good, fertile soil to grow in and regular feeding.

I’d recommend using a multi-purpose compost with added John Innes or Organic Vegetable compost and mixing in a good quality feed such as fish, blood and bone or Growmore for growing crops such as cabbages, lettuces, broccoli, brussel sprouts, chard, kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers, chillies, water cress and soft fruit. For greedy crops like potatoes Big selection of bulb packs available at and rhubarb, I’d recommend Plymouth Garden Centre digging in some well rotted farmyard manure into the existing ground, or if the soil is particularly poor, dig it in with multi-purpose compost as well to give it the best start you can. Root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, turnips, swede, beetroot and onions prefer a poor, well drained soil, as a rich heavy soil causes them to run to seed and grow distorted, making them inedible. Peas and beans also like similar conditions. Digging in grit and horticultural sand will help improve growing conditions for them. A great way of growing vegetables is by doing crop rotations if you have the space. The idea is that you have four beds and can grow all your different vegetables at the same time despite having different growing conditions.

In the first bed, heavily feed it with farmyard manure and grow potatoes in it. In the second year, the soil will be poor as the potatoes have used all the nutrients up, so grow beans and peas as they like that type of soil. They will also put nitrogen back into the ground which creates perfect growing conditions in the third year for cabbages, lettuces,

They will then use up the nutrients again which in turn will create perfect growing conditions for root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, turnip, swede, beetroot, leeks and onions. Each year you rotate the crops growing in the beds so in the second year add manure to the second bed for potatoes, in the third year use the third bed for potatoes and add manure and so on. This will allow you to get the highest crop production from your veg beds. If that sounds a bit too much and if you have limited space, then you can grow fruit and vegetables in pots very successfully. Lettuces are great in pots, especially cutand-come-again varieties. Tomatoes also do very well in pots and the bush types do very well in hanging baskets, as do strawberries. Peas are successful in large pots as are potatoes. A wide, deep pot is better and can yield a heavy crop. If you have a pot that doesn’t have any drainage holes, use it for growing water cress as it likes to stay constantly wet. Growing in pots also allows you to grow things that have specific soil requirements such as blueberries, which require ericaceous soil. So grow them in a pot if your

training in the garden (12ins). This encourages the plants to become bushier and produce more flowers. Regularly feed with tomato feed and this will also encourage more flowers to grow. When it is in flower, regularly pick flowers to enjoy in the home as this also causes the plants to produce a lot more flowers. Get your pots and hanging baskets started early for the biggest and best displays. Replace last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s compost with fresh compost and slow release fertiliser and water storing crystals to help reduce watering. This will give your plants the best start. I would also recommend fortnightly feeding with a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro or Phostrogen. This will give you really magnificent displays. When planting your pots and baskets, always start with a centrepiece that usually has upright growth such as a geranium or a fuchsia, then plant around the edging with some trailing plants such as surfinias, verbena or begonias. To break up the colours and prevent your displays from clashing or being over the top, use trailing foliage plants such as helichrysum, nepeta or lysimachia as a foil or to soften displays. Any gaps you may have can be filled with filler plants such as bacopa, bidens, lobelia or alyssum. This will give you full, long lived displays. Plant up your pots and baskets so they look full from the start and then they will only keep getting better. Remember to keep them well watered and deadhead to keep them looking at their best.
