It hardly seems possible that 10 years have passed since we publlshed the first issue of the Plymouth Magazine. Over the last decade we have seen the magazine grow in size - not just in terms of pages, but also distribution. We now deliver door-to-door to 40,000 homes across the city, with 5,000 more copies distributed via hotels, restaurants, leisure outlets, libraries and supermarkets. It’s fair to say the magazine has become a well-read and popular fixture of the publishing scene in the city. None of this success would have been possible without the fantastic support and contribution of many people and organisations. I would like to start by paying tribute to our fantastic team of distributors who, come rain or shine, ensure that the magazine arrives safely on thousands of doormats every month. We would not be celebrating a decade of publication without the ongoing support of our advertisers - many of whom have been loyal to the magazine for many years. Right from the very beginning we have been fortunate to have a range of contributors who have written editorial columns on a wide range of subjects, enabling our readers to benefit from their specialist knowledge and experience. I would also like to pay tribute to the brilliant team at Cornerstone Vision, who have worked tirelessly month in, month out, to ensure that the Plymouth Magazine always appears on time, full of interesting articles and information, as well as dozens of advertisments from local businesses and organisations. And last, but by no means least, thank you to you, our readers, who have encouraged us so much with your positive comments and feedback. Plymouth has changed a lot over the last 10 years and we have been privileged to report on so many positive changes and success stories. We hope you like the new look of the magazine and here’s to the next 10 years! WOMEN AT WORK After more than 20 years working for Britain’s major food retailers, Joanna Hunt has launched her own mouthwatering business running cake decorating classes. Joanna, who spent most of her early years in the city, returned to Plymouth 18 months ago after having twin daughters, who were less than a year old at the time. As a senior food buyer for Tesco’s, Joanna travelled the world not only sourcing foods, but also sharing her buying skills with the commercial teams in Europe and the Far East. In 2010 she decided to give up her high-flying career and combine her passions for baking and craft to launch Cloudberry at her then home in Whitstable, Kent. She offers creative cake decorating classes for everyone from absolute beginners to those wanting to take their creative skills to higher levels. Joanna runs her classes in the magnificent surroundings of St Michael’s Lodge in Stoke, a Georgian manor house designed by one of Plymouth’s most celebrated architects, John Foulston. Set in country style grounds, St Michael’s Lodge was for more than 80 years a private school, before being carefully converted back to a family home in 1970. “My career took me away from Plymouth for 30 years and it’s wonderful to be back,” said Joanna. “I grew up in Napier Street, just round the corner from St Michael’s Lodge, and went to Stoke Damerel High School for Girls, before studying food science at Reading University.” Having spent more than a year decorating and refurbishing St Michael’s Lodge, Joanna launched her cake decorating classes a few weeks ago. “We bake all of our cup Delightfully decorated cup cakes

cakes fresh and supply all materials, aprons and equipment needed in our classes. Everyone taking part gets hands on experience and leaves with a box crammed full of stunning cup cakes and the skills to create similar works of art at home,” said Joanna. Each class is themed and focuses on different seasonal events and cake decorating techniques such as piping butter cream, rolling sugar fondant, piping with Royal Icing and sugar craft skills. Joanna plans to run baking courses as well in the future and eventually bring in tutors with a wide variety of additional skills. “I would like to think that Cloudberry can become a hub for creative cake making and decorating in the South West,” she added. Joanna organises half day and full day courses, as well as running private classes, parties and baby showers.

WOMEN AT WORK

Blooming good luck, Amy! Twenty-year-old Amy Bennett’s career is blooming - literally. The young florist from St Jude’s is heading to London in May to compete for the title of Young Florist of the Year at the Chelsea Flower Show. She won the right to compete in the national finals after being named as the best Young Florist of the Year in Devon and Cornwall. She will have to use the best of her undoubted creative talents in the final test, which involves creating a floral dress for a crystal ball. Amy, who works at Flower Fayre in Stoke Village said: “I was surprised and delighted to win the regional final, which involved making a floral collar. “The other entries were absolutely beautiful, it was very

competitive.” Amy has worked at as a trainee florist since the age of 16, when she started as a Saturday girl. She is currently studying one day a week at Bicton College and is on target to become a fully-qualified florist later this year. She will travel up to London on May 17 and take part in the competition the next day. “You have to make part of the floral dress while you are there, so the judges can see how you work. It’s a scary thought, but I’m looking forward to it.” Her long-term dream is to run her own floristry business - but for the time being her focus is on the Chelsea Flower Show and the chance to be crowned Young Florist of the Year.

ART MATTERS

Young artists show their talents

A special arts event held annually by the Rotary Club of Plympton is now in its eighth year. The Young Artist Exhibition was started in 2006 and showcases the artistic talents of pupils from Plympton and Plymstock. An opportunity is given for children and young adults between the ages of 4 to 18 to display their artwork Since 2013 the exhibition has expanded to include entries for the Rotary Young Photographer Competition. In March I was invited along to the Brittany Ferries departure lounge where a large group of parents, teachers and pupils had gathered for the event. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement and anticipation as we awaited the official opening and the cutting of the ribbon. The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Mrs Vivien Pengelly was in attendance. Amongst the many things she does to contribute to life in Plymouth, she is also a Governor at both Plymstock School and Elburton Primary School. The By fact that Vivien had spent many years Kerry Cole within the teaching profession made her an ideal person to mingle with the crowd and encourage the youngsters on their success. She said: “I have really enjoyed coming here and seeing all of this beautiful artwork. When I was working at Laira Green Primary School teaching art was always such a great pleasure. Children can be under so much stress and pressure to attain standards in education, I believe art is a really good way to help them relax.” Clare Thomas, from the Plympton Rotary Club added: “The enthusiasm and gifting shown here indicates talent is thriving

Georgie Furneaux, whose work impressed Kerry Cole

in our schools. Art is one of the first forms of communication that children use. It helps with language development and expression, adding meaning to everything they learn. This event really is a celebration of all of these young people’s creativity.” The exhibition certainly provides an audience to appreciate the amazing talents on show. These included 116 art exhibits, 37 entries for Young Photographer and nine photographic exhibits. Clare was keen to point out that the art exhibition is regarded as a prestigious event in the Rotary and the schools calendar. The teachers I spoke to from participating schools expressed the value they put on this exhibition. Ridgeway School’s Maria Romanski said: “The quality of the artwork is very high. This is an important exhibition for all who take part.” There was one picture that particularly drew my attention. I guess it was because of my love of all things to do with our local beach scene. Looking up at a large painting by 14-yearold, Georgia Furneaux , I was immediately transported into a world of nostalgic thoughts and memories of all the things I associate with happy seaside holidays. The image contained many of the rich nautical delights that are available to all of us who live in this part of the country. Georgina’s beautifully detailed painting incorporated small boats in the foreground, along with an array of all the lovely things you might find on a seaside holiday I spoke to Georgina and she said: “The painting is about travel and journies using elements of the seaside. I was born in Plymouth and my family have spent many holidays down in Cornwall. My picture reflects many things that I love about the seaside. I had an opportunity to attend the Olympics and through that experience I got inspired to go sailing.” Success of the Rotary Art Exhibition is ensured by the hospitality and sponsorship of Brittany Ferries and AB Ports. The pictures were on view in the Passenger waiting room throughout March and April and then moved on to be exhibited in Sainsbury’s Café at Marsh Mills. Participating schools were: Boringdon Primary, Chaddlewood Primary School, Dunstone Primary, Elburton Primary, Glen Park Primary, Old Priory Academy, Pomphlett Primary, Yealmpstone Farm Primary, Longcause Special School, Ridgeway School and Hele’s School.

Steak and asparagus stir fry with jasmine rice Serves Six (plus there’ll be leftover meat) Preparation time 20 minutes Cooking time 6 hours 15 mins √√ 2 carrots, roughly chopped; 1 onion, cut into wedges; 2 bay leaves √√ oil for frying, eg. rapeseed √√ 2.2kg lamb shoulder √√ 1 head of garlic; rosemary sprigs √√ 1kg mixed root veg; a few thyme sprigs √√ 250g pearl barley √√ 800ml stock √√ oil for roasting, eg. light olive √√ large bunch fresh parsley, chopped √√ For the mint sauce: √√ 20g fresh mint leaves; 2 tsp caster sugar; 2 tbsp white wine vinegar √√ good pinch fine sea salt Preheat the oven to 120˚C. Put the carrots, onion and bay leaves in a roasting tray that will fit the lamb fairly snugly. Heat a large frying pan with a bit of oil and brown the lamb on both sides. Remove it and lay on the veg in the tin. Cut small slits in the lamb and poke in some whole garlic cloves and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper. Pour 100ml water into the bottom of the pan, cover tightly with foil and bake for 4 hours. Peel and chop the root veg into 2cm dice, put in a roasting tin and toss in just enough oil to coat. After the lamb has been in the oven for 4 hours, put the veg in the oven and roast it for 2-2½ hours, until tender. Once the veg goes in, make the mint sauce. Mix all the ingredients with 3 tbsp boiling water in a small bowl. Cook the barley after the veg has been in for an hour. Put the stock and barley in a saucepan and simmer for 35-40 mins, until tender but still with some bite. Drain and keep to one side until the veg is ready, then mix the root veg with the barley and parsley, seasoning well. Skim the fat off the lamb juices and use the leftover sauce for gravy.

The Plymouth Magazine May 2014

FOOD MATTERS Victor Kiam gained global fame for his advertising campaign declaring he liked the Remington razor so much that he bought the company. It might not be on the same scale, but friends Tony Wainwright and Michael O’Shaughnessy last year emulated the noted American by taking over Plymouth’s iconic Lorenzos - one of their favourite eateries. The two businessmen discovered that Lorenzos was up for sale in the autumn of 2012. Although they have some experience of catering, both realised from the outset that Lorenzos represented a serious challenge. By March last year they had completed the deal and become the joint owners of one of Plymouth’s most popular Spanish restaurant and tapas bar. Michael’s wife Kay and Tony’s wife Jenny have both been involved in bringing Lorenzos up-to-date. Lorenzos has been part of the Plymouth restaurant scene for over 25 years, located in the city centre in the shadow of the Theatre Royal at Derry’s Cross. Michael said: “We have both enjoyed the Lorenzos experience over the years and see it as something of an institution in the city.” They retained all the 15 staff employed by the previous owners and then set about giving Lorenzos a much-needed facelift. Tony, who is a management consultant, said: “We have redecorated and refreshed the menu and also introduced a new logo. We have retained all the popular dishes and added four varieties of paella - it was amazing that they weren’t on the menu before.” Michael, a quantity surveyor and property director, said: “We have also signed up local suppliers, ensuring all our produce is delivered fresh daily. Meat is supplied by Jones & Champion in Ebrington Street, fish comes from Moby Nicks and our fruit, vegetables and salads from the fields of Cornish Farm Produce in Saltash.” The menu features all the popular Spanish starters and mains, as well as a big selection of tapas, available in both English and Spanish sized portions.

FOOD MATTERS

Family friendly at Lorenzos

• Continued from previous page Lorenzos has always been popular for pre-theatre diners and Tony and Michael also see big potential for post-theatre dining as well. The restaurant is open from 11am until late, seven days a week, with last orders closing at 10.45pm. The pair have also introduced a range of special meal deals to appeal to a wide range of customers. These include a Theatre Royal or Pavilions special, available from 5pm to 7.30pm which features one English portion tapas and a selected drink for just £9.75. There is also a similar Reel Cinema deal priced at £13.95, which also includes a ticket to the cinema. The ‘Mad Lunch’ offer is available from 12 noon to 2pm with one English portion tapas and a selected drink for just £8.50. Also proving popular is a Lovers Special Meal Deal featuring two English portion tapas and a bottle of house wine for £24. The menu is complimented by a selection of wines, sangria, beers and cocktails, plus a selection of home-made desserts. The new owners have also introduced live Spanish guitar music on Tuesday evenings, which is also proving particularly popular. Michael said: “We spend as much time here as we possibly can and love meeting guests and diners. It’s great to be part of the future of Lorenzos, given its special place in the heart of the city.” The family-friendly restaurant has seating for up to 80 guests on two floors, and is available for private parties. Booking is always advisable.

The Plymouth Magazine May 2014

Speak-easy style bars are popular in some of the biggest and most glamorous cities in the world - and now Plymouth has one as well. Plymouth’s historic Duke of Cornwall Hotel has teamed up with a leading city events company to provide a classic venue where customers can enjoy fine drinks and cocktails in a uniquely relaxed atmosphere. The former Fleur de Lys Suite, situated on the lower ground floor of the hotel is now known as Tigermilk, operated by the events company of the same name. It is currently open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm to 2am serving authentic prohibitionstyle drinks, modern twists, hand sourced premium spirits, wines, beers and regular music and other entertainment. Speak-easy bars came into prominence in the USA during the prohibition era of the 1920s and 30s and were revived in the 21st century to refer to a legal prohibition-themed cocktail bar, generally serving classic cocktails and other famous brand drinks and beers. There are now a growing number of speak-easy bars in the USA, Britain and other countries around the world. Tigermilk is the brainchild of business partners Eric Chan and Mark Smalley, who first worked together at the B-Lush Lounge in the city centre. Both are passionate about cocktails having entered and won some of the top cocktail competitions in the UK. A number of their prize-winning cocktails are available at Tigermilk. Eric and Jon Morcom, director of the Duke of Cornwall, studied together at City College in the late 1980s and have remained friends ever since. Jon said: “Eric and Mark had used the Duke of Cornwall for a bartenders training programme and were interested in the potential of the Fleur de Lys Suite. • Continued opposite

PLYMOUTH MATTERS “It has been used as a venue for functions for many years and in the past was the location of the famous Spiders Web bistro, which was a popular dining choice for many Plymothians. “The suite has become under-utilised in recent years so we were delighted when Eric and Mark approached us with the idea of opening Tigermilk.” Mark said: “There is definitely a demand for this type of experience from people who enjoy a drink in a relaxed atmosphere, rather than a club or standing environment. We not only serve a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails, but also spirits, wines, beers and lagers. “We have taught bartenders for a number of years in Plymouth and now we have a place for up and coming bartenders to enhance their skills. We will be offering great trade session days to help support the local bartending community.” The official opening took place in April after refurbishment of the Fleur de Lys, including a new-look bar area. Tigermilk has its own exclusive entrance at the side of the hotel, with customers entering via an intercom system - much in the style of the speak-easy bars of the 1920s. Eric said: “Tigermilk is open to everyone, although we will be introducing a membership scheme in the future which will entitle members to join us for special events, such as tastings and food and drink pairings.” Eric and Mark will bring Ambassadors from the leading drinks brands to Plymouth for special tastings and tips. Mark said: “We hosted a ticket-only event in April when the Ambassador from Chivas Regal came and shared with our customers about the art of blending whisky. It was a sell-out event and proved extremely successful. We will be hosting more of these events in the future.”

Peace of mind for widow Beryl When Beryl Ward’s husband Graham was diagnosed with terminal illness last year she was naturally devastated.

The couple had been married for more than 50 years when former dockyard joiner Graham was diagnosed with cancer. The last thing Beryl needed to think about was making a will and protecting the Plympton home where they had spent many happy years together. But her hairdresser daughter Helen knew it was an important issue and took the opportunity to talk to one of her regular customers, David Richardson of Richardsons Legal Services. David said:”I was having my haircut last year by Helen and realised she was very upset. She asked me if I would visit her father in hospital to make a new will for Beryl and her father Graham because he was dying of cancer. “I did this and explained to Mrs Ward that I would like to treat her will as temporary and would have suggestions later about what she should do after the death of her husband Graham. I visited Graham twice in hospital and he died shortly after. “I went to see Mrs Ward and her daughter Helen and son-in-law Kevin after

Beryl Ward with a precious photo of herself and her late husband Graham pictured with band leader James Last

Graham’s death and outlined what needed to be done regarding probate. “I suggested she also consider a Home Protection Trust to make things easier for her daughter after her death by removing the need for probate on her property in the future, and also protecting it from any unforeseen eventualities. “I also suggested she consider taking out a Lasting Power of Attorney to allow her daughter to make decisions for her regarding financial matters and health and welfare matters if she was unable to do so for herself in the future. “I suggested they have a family meeting

before they decided. Helen phoned me a few days later and told me her mother Beryl had decided to do everything I suggested.” Beryl, who is 77, said: “Graham and I had prepared wills many years ago, but had never updated them to take account of our changed circumstances. “David came to the hospital with me and explained everything to Graham simply and clearly and we could see that his recommendations made very good sense. “David never put us under any pressure whatsoever and was extremely kind and sensitive throughout the whole process. He has remained in regular contact with me to make sure that I am OK with everything.” “I now have complete peace of mind and know that everything is in order for the future.” Beryl and Graham were big fans of James Last and travelled to many venues across the UK and Europe to enjoy his concerts. “Sadly, on the day of Graham’s funeral we should have been at a James Last concert at the Albert Hall, but it was not to be. But we did have some of his music at the funeral, which was very special.”

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War, Port Eliot House is staging an exhibition in memory of several local servicemen during the 2014 open season. Renowned production designer and art director Michael Howells will curate the installation which will be on show from May onwards. The servicemen remembered are Sec Lt WP Reed, Pte F Clayton, Pte R Crapp, Pte A Hosking, Pte W Kendall, J Moyse, AB C Perkins, Armr W. C. Trevethick and Pte E Vanson The nine men were in various different regiments including Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, Royal Fusiliers, Essex Regiment and the Scots Guards. Two of the men died on ships: William Charles Trevethick died on board HMS Defense in May 1916 when German ships shelled her and she blew up killing all 900 sailors on board instantly. Cyril Perkins was one of 11 out of 400 men who died when HMS Cassandra hit a mine in December 1918. The ship sank and all but the 11 men were rescued. There is an article in the Cornish Times about Steven Moyse in November 1918 which refers to Port Eliot: the extract being, ‘he had been an employee on Port Eliot from a boy and when the war broke out he went away on national service.’ The majority of the men are buried abroad but one, William Kendall lies in St German’s cemetery. On display will be a unique glimpse of the social history of both Port Eliot and the local village during this period – including the role of women. The exhibition will include items at Port Eliot from John Granville Eliot the 6th Earl of St Germans. John became a Captain in the 2nd Dragoons of the Scots Greys, and fought in the First World War. He was an extremely popular and capable soldier and was awarded a Military Cross in 1916. The Countess of St Germans and Dowager Countess were known for their fund rising with events in the Round Room at Port Eliot and the Eliot Hall. Lady St Germans was a supporter of the ‘Red Cross Pearl Necklace Scheme’ when in November 1918 she sold a pearl necklace that once belonged to the Empress Josephine. St Germans Primary School will also be growing about 1,000 oak tree saplings, which in two to three years time will be planted at Port Eliot, towards the end of the commemoration of WW1. Port Eliot House and Garden is open from 2pm to 6pm until June 30. Closed on Fridays and also May 31, June 1, 7, 8 and 28. Diary dates at Port Eliot this year include: ❚❚ May 10 Dog Festival with proceeds to Little Harbour Children’s Hospice ❚❚ May 17 Museums at Night Port Eliot House and Basement open by candlelight, piano playing by renowned composer P K Joyce. Presented as one show displayed across the two city centre venues, ‘New Sculpture and Works on Paper’ is Peter’s first major exhibition in the region for twenty five years. Until May 10 LAURA KNIGHT PORTRAITS Dame Laura Knight (1877 –1970) was one of the most popular and pioneering British artists of the twentieth century. Her artistic career took her from Cornwall to Baltimore and from the circus to the Nuremberg Trials. Knight used portraiture to capture contemporary life and culture, and her paintings are remarkable for their diverse range of subjects and settings. This exhibition of portraits will reveal Knight’s

highly distinctive and vivid work, and also illustrate her success in gaining greater professional recognition for women in the arts. Until Sept 27 DIARY OF A SOLDIER Merchant’s House 33 St Andrew St, Plymouth City Centre. See a display featuring transcripts and images of sketches by W O Reynolds, an artist, teacher and soldier from Lipson in Plymouth who served in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during World War I. Two of his diaries and sketchbooks are held in the City archives and provide a fascinating first-hand account of his experiences. This display focuses on the diary of his outward voyage to Gallipoli via Malta and Egypt dated 16 July 1915 to 25 February 1916. For details call 01752 304774 May 1 to November 29 PLYMOUTH’S GREAT WAR: THREE TOWNS UNITED IN CONFLICT An exhibition that gives a unique overview of the First World War from a Plymouth

perspective. ‘Plymouth’s Great War’ will feature the story of the amalgamation of the Three Towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse in 1914; reflecting on them as home to the Royal Navy, Army Garrisons, Royal Marines and Royal Naval Air Service. It will also look at the impact of the war on local people’s lives – touching on recruitment, conscription, the fighting, the cost, the aftermath and the ‘home front’. The exhibition will feature items, images and documents from the city’s arts, heritage and archive collections. A programme of talks and special commemorative events will run alongside it as part of the city-wide Plymouth Remembers campaign aimed at highlighting the centenary of the Three Towns amalgamation and the advent of war. This is not just a standard review of the First World War from start to finish. It’s the story of Plymouth and Plymothians from 1914 to 1918. May 24 to August 23 MODERN MASTERS IN PRINT Four of the 20th century’s greatest artists – Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol – were also accomplished printmakers.

Salvador Dali’s ‘Owl’ print is among the V&A collection

Together, these four artists spanned a 75-year period that saw the birth of the modern age. They employed a wide range of techniques, and their work represents one of the most creative and diverse periods of printmaking in the history of western art. Drawn from the V&A’s outstanding collections of prints, posters and artists’ books, ‘Modern Masters’ showcases their work in print. The exhibition will highlight the different ways in which each of these four artists used the print.

LEGAL MATTERS Disputes about wills and inheritance are becoming more common and there are many different kinds of dispute that can arise.

By Rex Buscombe

of Thompson & Jackson Solicitors

Rex Buscombe is an experienced solicitor specialising in dispute resolution and civil court work, particularly disputes about wills, inheritance and property.

When a will is made by someone who is elderly and confused or ill, there may be concern that the person did not understand what they were doing or did not have the necessary mental capacity to make a valid will. Alternatively, there may be concern that the person making the will was subject to pressure (this is often called ‘undue influence’) to leave property or money contrary to their wishes. If you think a will may be invalid because the person who made it lacked the necessary mental capacity or was subject to undue influence, you should seek advice from a specialist lawyer as quickly as possible. It may be appropriate to register a caveat at the Probate Registry to stop the person named as executor in the will obtaining a Grant of Probate and becoming able to deal with the estate. People’s family and domestic arrangements have become more complicated in recent years and this often leads to disputes about wills and inheritance, even when there is no suspicion that the will is actually invalid. You may have been left out of a will but think that the deceased should have made financial provision for you. For example, a former spouse or the children of a first marriage or relationship may be left out of a will that leaves the

Contested wills and inheritance disputes estate to the deceased’s new partner. Alternatively, a will or the intestacy rules may result in the estate going to the deceased’s children of a first marriage, with nothing for his/her cohabiting partner. Even if there is no claim that a will is invalid, the Inheritance (Provision for Family & Dependants) Act 1975 may allow certain categories of people to make a claim against an estate if the will or the Intestacy Rules have not made reasonable financial provision for them but should have done. Again, advice should be obtained promptly because a claim under the Inheritance Act 1975 must usually be commenced within six months from the date of the Grant of Probate.

Pizza the action - cooking up some fun with the children This month we are going to make homemade pizzas - a good basic meal to have on your family’s menu. Not only does everyone like pizza but they are very economical to make too. Children particularly like making and eating pizza and this is a meal they can get involved in from start to finish. In our house pizza often By Liz features on the menu Crudgington when I have a bare fridge! of the It’s great because you can use pretty much anything Roundabout you have left to top them Day Nursery with. The only thing you really need is grated cheese, other than that you can put on what you like. This is the process to make two large pizzas: The base √√ 250g plain flour + 250g strong white flour √√ 325ml warm water √√ 1 tablespoon olive oil √√ 1 teaspoon salt √√ 1 teaspoons yeast Mix these together and knead until smooth, then leave for

about an hour or two until doubled in size. The topping You need a base layer first – something like tomato pureé, or olive oil with a bit of garlic The toppings – absolutely anything you like! It’s best not to put too much on though as it won’t cook so well. Toppings could include tomato, cheese, salami, mushroom, ham, olives, chorizo, among others. Basic instructions: Make the base (and leave it to rise) and prepare the toppings. Set the oven to Gas Mark 9/250 C and put the baking trays (or stones if you have them) in about 20 minutes before you want to start cooking. Cut the base mixture in half and roll it out into two large circles. Put the pizza toppings on. Remove the trays or stones from the oven and put the pizzas on them. Cook for 10-12 minutes. Involving the children Under 3s – let them use the ingredients you’ve already prepared to ‘design a pizza’. Let them sprinkle grated cheese over the top Pre-schoolers (3-5 year olds) Take them shopping to pick some ingredients – if you’re feeling brave enough you could let them take a toy trolley around! Let them carry a shopping list with them, draw pictures of what you want them to find rather than words at this age. It’s nice to involve them in ‘writing’ the shopping list too. You could get them to draw the picture and you write the words next to it. Give them a pencil to cross things off as they find them. At home get them to help wash and chop the vegetables. You can get special children’s safety knives if you’re worried about them using a knife. Or just use a dinner knife and give them something soft to cut up like mushrooms and ham. Primary aged (5-11 years) Let them measure out the ingredients for the base and have a go at kneading it. Involve them in preparing the toppings – this is a dinner that they could prepare without adult help if they’re used to helping in the kitchen. Let them customise the pizzas so that different sections are made for different people. You could get them to prepare a salad to accompany the pizza.

The Plymouth Magazine May 2014

While many big-name kitchen and bathroom companies have disappeared from the High Street over the last few years, Plymouth’s KF Kitchens and Bedrooms has gone from strength to strength. KF Kitchens and Bedrooms was launched at Faraday Mill in 2008 by husband and wife Nathan and Derinda Damarell and their business partner Simon Rice. Between them they have over 60 years’ experience in the kitchen and bedroom industry and boast one of the largest kitchen showrooms in the South West. With over 40,000 square feet of space and more than 20 kitchens, four bedrooms and several room sets on display, KF can cater for every taste and budget. Nathan said that the KF’s turnover had increased by a third over the last six years - despite one of the deepest recessions the UK has experienced in recent times. “There have been many significant developments in the kitchen industry over the last few years, notably the introduction of induction hobs and other advanced appliances, quartz worktops, slide-away doors, curved finishes and much more,” said Nathan. “We have kept up to date with all these developments ensuring that our customers benefit from our experience and knowledge. “Kitchen design has changed dramatically in recent years. Kitchens are increasingly seen as the focal point of the home where families come together to prepare meals, cook and socialise. It’s not about cabinets and cookers now, it’s more about lifestyle.” Continued investment in the range of kitchens and appliances One of the stylish new bedroom displays at KF in their Faraday Mill showroom has ensured that KF stays at the forefront of kitchen developments and advances. They boast the city’s premier showroom for appliances from leading manufacturer NEFF and are a coveted 5 Star Master Partner of the German company. Recent investment in a new range of bespoke bedroom furniture has further boosted KF’s fortunes. “We have brought the same ethos and design techniques to our bedroom range that has been so successful for our kitchen products,” said Nathan. “We help our customers maximise their bedroom space by offering high-quality made-to-measure products with a selection of 10 door styles and 30 different colour choices,” said Nathan. “Many of the big bedroom companies offer standard size products, which limits the full storage and space potential. “Our bedrooms are totally bespoke and are designed to optimise space and storage as well as meeting the precise needs of the customer.” The new bedroom displays are complemented by a range of Karndean flooring and carpets, now also available from KF. Glowing customer testimonials on the company’s website underline the quality of the service offered by KF.

Ten years ago Vietnam and Cambodia were only visited by the most adventurous of traveller whereas today many more operators feature this fascinating part of the world. I’m sure many of you have heard of Indochina, but not really sure of where it is. It actually consists of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. These areas have grown in popularity with the help of direct flights from the UK into Vietnam, opening up Indochina to a whole new market. Many first-time visitors to the region choose to combine the countries of Vietnam and Cambodia on a two or three week stay. A great way to explore these two countries is on a small group tour, allowing for a more intimate and responsible way of travelling in a typical group size of between 12 and 16 people. The beauty of travelling as part of a smaller group is the ability to turn left when larger groups keep on the straight road, and delving deeper into the country, meeting locals and creating lifelong memories. To find the correct tour for you is not easy, so I work closely with Indochina specialist tour operators offering guaranteed small group touring departures to Vietnam, Cambodia and beyond, as well as tailor-made holidays crafted to your requirements and luxury river cruise options along the mighty Mekong. These operators have local offices and representatives who live in the towns and cities you’re visiting, giving you the knowledge and insight in the area only a local can offer. Vietnam Vietnam is a nation of diversity. From north to south you will find ‘authentic’ Asia in the majestic mountains in the north, fertile plains of the Mekong Delta, classical pagodas and temples, bustling cities and street markets, and the faded elegance of the French colonial era. You will also encounter a nation rich in culture, tradition and history, and people with a refreshing warmth and friendliness unequalled in Southeast Asia; a people who have put the war-torn past behind them and are clearly focused on a bright future. Between October and April is a popular and busy time to travel to Vietnam, so book well in advance. The best time to visit Vietnam if you want to see the whole country, though, is spring and autumn as the temperatures are By Travel more moderate and rainfall is lighter. March and April have the lowest rainfall Expert across all destinations and temperatures Anthony Goord are pleasant. If you are looking for rest and relaxation then beach weather is perfect through to July. The graceful capital of Hanoi in Northern Vietnam retains the charm and ambience of the French-colonial era. Few cities stir the imagination in the way that Hanoi does. The perfect combination of colonial architecture, quiet lakes and the bustling Old Quarter create a uniquely Vietnamese experience. An overnight train journey away from Hanoi lies Sapa, one of Vietnam’s most fascinating French hill stations surrounded by landscapes of terraced rice paddies. The region is home to many of Vietnam’s ethnic hill tribe minority groups who retain their traditions and wear colourful dyed and woven fabrics and etched silver jewellery. Just a few hours’ drive from Hanoi lies a truly magical natural wonder – Halong Bay. Thousands of limestone mountains emerge from the tranquil waters of the Gulf of Tonkin to create a mystical and beautiful backdrop for the converted Chinese junks sailing amongst the outcrops. Central Vietnam is home to historic Hue. Here, explore the Citadel, scene of the Tet Offensive during the American War and the seat of power for the Nguyen family. TRAVEL MATTERS

Vietnam and Cambodia proving popular with holidaymakers

home to some of the country’s best cuisine. It is a paradise for shoppers, diners, photographers and beach lovers, with some of Vietnam’s best resort style properties located on the South China Sea. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is the economic powerhouse of the country – the city is modern, yet you can still see the Vietnam of old. Further south is the picture postcard Mekong Delta, an extremely fertile and friendly region with paddy fields, floating markets and bustling waterways, and an entry point to experiencing a luxury river cruise as your journey upstream to the Cambodian border. Cambodia For many, the name Cambodia conjures images of war and the notorious ‘Killing Fields’. True, these events have been a part of this nation’s history but today, Cambodia has much more to offer. The temples of Angkor are without a doubt, one of the most captivating sights in Southeast Asia. But when on tour you will also see another side of Cambodia that is just as compelling - palm-fringed beaches on the south coast, picturesque rural landscapes and riverside Phnom Penh, one of the most charming capital cities in Asia. Having emerged from decades of unrest the Khmer people are incredibly welcoming and warm and will be a highlight of your stay. Cambodia is warm year-round with temperatures rarely dipping below 68F (20C), wherever you go. Seasons are broken into wet and dry season. Wet season, from May to September, is usually marked by a brief downpour in the afternoon. Travel in the dry season, from October to April, is marked by hot, dry days.

nom Penh lies on the confluence of three rivers and retains its beautiful French-colonial architecture from its days as one of Indochina’s seats of French government and is now a city constantly reinventing itself. The capital is an atmospheric city and is home to the sublime Royal Palace, and also a recent tragic history. The Khmer Rouge devastated the city during the 1970s and although the past is remembered, the population of Pnom Penh is looking towards the future – fantastic restaurants and innovative art galleries abound in the city today. Siem Reap is known for being the gateway to temples aplenty, but this popular town offers so much more. A destination in its own right, Siem Reap is home to an abundance of stylish, boutique accommodation, delectable restaurants and trendy watering holes. Wander off the main boulevards and experience rural Cambodia as you meet the locals on dirt roads and in markets. Explore nearby Tonle Sap Lake, a fascinating boat trip from Siem Reap. An ecological marvel, Tonle Sap Lake is home to floating villages complete with floating schools, churches and shops. From Siem Reap expect to see one of mankind’s greatest architectural achievements. The magnificent temples of Angkor - of which Angkor Wat is the most famous - are permanent reminders of the incredible skill and dedication of the Khmer civilisation as it existed from the ninth to the fourteenth centuries. Forgotten and buried under dense jungle for hundreds of years, restoration of this ‘lost city’ only began in 1908. Angkor Wat is truly one of the great achievements of human civilisation. But that is only the start. In Cambodia’s south are Sihanoukville and Kep, fast becoming popular beach destinations for travellers. If you are interested in traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia I’ve put together two tours with the help of Travelindochina that cover the areas I’ve discussed. 17 day Vietnam & Temples of Angkor small group tour from £2,895pp. A journey incorporating the best of Vietnam and Cambodia. Be immersed in the busy streets of Hanoi and sparkling Halong Bay. Wander the peaceful lanes of Hue and Hoi An, continue through youthful Saigon and explore the Mekong Delta, before crossing into Cambodia to discover historic Phnom Penh and the majestic temples of Angkor. What’s included: Return flights with Singapore Airlines from London Heathrow, 14 nights 3-4 Star hotel accommodation, breakfast daily, three lunches and one dinner, small group touring, transfers, flights in Asia and entrance fees, a Western tour leader and local guides. Departing September 19 this year – further dates available. 14 day Saigon to Angkor luxury river cruise from £2,845 pp. Combine an eight-day luxury river cruise on The Jahan with a few days getting to know the bustling streets of exciting Saigon, visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels and discover the temples of Angkor. Your expert local guide ensures each experience is entertaining and informative. From beginning to end, expect deluxe accommodation, delicious cuisine and personal service. What’s included: Return flights with Vietnam Airlines from London Gatwick, four nights 5 Star hotel accommodation, seven nights cruise accommodation on board The Jahan in a superior cabin, breakfast daily, eight lunches and 11 dinners, join in touring including entrance fees, transfers, local English-speaking guides, tips. PLYMOUTH MATTERS By Lesley Shorrocks

director of Sigma, the Plymouth advertising and marketing agency, and chair of the Plymouth Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) In this tenth anniversary edition of Plymouth Magazine, I’d like say a big ‘congratulations’ to everybody involved with its success. It’s no mean feat to establish an independent publication in this day and age and judging by Sigma’s clients’ comments, it’s a magazine that is avidly read and hung onto. Co-incidently, it’s 10 years since I joined the Federation of Small Businesses, glad of the support the not-for-profit, non-party political organisation offered me a small business owner. An attractive selling point was (and still is) the legal protection offered in the event of a tax or VAT inspection. But just a couple of years later, I realised that joining the branch committee would afford me the opportunity to learn a great deal more about running a business and let me contribute to improving the conditions we face both locally and nationally. The FSB is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, but looking back to 2004, there have been great strides made in the last 10 years. Efficient lobbying on policy issues at national level with politicians and government officials and at regional and local authority levels too, has won the FSB increasing stature as the key

Ten years of progress for the magazine – and the FSB... organisation to promote and protect the interests of the selfemployed and small business owners. National membership had exceeded 200,000 in 2000, so by 2004 the portfolio of benefits and services had grown substantially and the FSB biennial survey of its members had been introduced. This work raised its profile considerably as a unique barometer in respect of micros and small businesses, with its findings regularly quoted in the House of Commons. In 2006, the FSB launched Keep Trade Local, a campaign built around the concern for the future of the British high street. You would be forgiven for thinking at this point: ‘the more things change, the more things stay the same’, as this is a topic which is still high on the agenda both at national level and here in Plymouth. 2006 also saw the FSB start to produce a report each year at its national conference, detailing key topics of concern and by the end of the decade, it was regularly producing summaries of its policy achievements as well as detailing its first election manifesto, with six key areas of focus: Employment, Taxation, Finance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Low Carbon Economy and Local Communities. 2011 saw a new campaign, Real Life Entrepreneurs, which drew attention to the country’s 4.5 million entrepreneurs who create sustainable jobs, wealth and growth across the UK. A visit to Exeter by motivational speaker Mike Southon as part of this campaign gave everyone attending a major confidence boost. In 2012, the depth and breadth of FSB surveys increased and became the most extensive research into the small business sector during the downturn and in 2013, the Federation linked with universities to further bolster the crucial information it uncovered on how small businesses contribute to the economy and reduce unemployment – 50% of Gross Domestic Product comes from the SME sector, with 59% of the UK’s workforce of 13.7m employed by SMEs. 2013 saw two major FSB invitations to Downing Street and in 2014 the FSB held its first ever policy conference, attended by the Prime Minister. Attending the FSB National Conference in March just a month ago, it was interesting to note some FSB ‘wins’ in Chancellor George Osborne ‘s March budget. These included things like the abolition of automatic rollover of business energy contracts, the freezing of fuel duty, discounts on retail business rates and the Employment Allowance - which will cut the first £2,000 from Employers’ National Insurance Contributions – all steps in a positive direction.

All achieved through local FSB members like us giving voice to our concerns and contributing to the upward flow of information, supporting a massive network of national intelligence which informs on the topics that really matter when you are trying to build a business. Not many people run businesses which they are not trying to grow and at local level, the FSB Branch is contributing to the debate about how we can best develop Plymouth’s economy and create jobs and prosperity for as many people as we can. There’s no doubt that in the last ten years, Plymouth has seen major developments which have created opportunities and there’s even an greater impetus to seize them now we have things like the City Deal on the table. During this the last 10 years too, the branch has increased in size and strength, stepping up its activities on topics like local procurement (which unfortunately we can’t claim any major improvements in) and trying to let more people know about the benefits of having a campaigning voice. A key area of concern nationally and for many of our 1,000 local members, is the need to encourage better employability skills in job seekers of all ages and the branch hopes to get involved in helping the city address this issue, including taking up a place on the new Employment Skills Board for instance. Hopefully, another 10 years down the line, the Plymouth Magazine will be able to report on the success of a city packed full of people with fulfilling careers, enjoying life in this beautiful city by the sea.

PROPERTY MATTERS

Plymouth property market has seen big changes in last Plymouth’s property market has changed dramatically in the decade since the Plymouth Magazine was launched, according to one of the city’s leading estate agents. Darren Lawson, managing director of Mansbridge & Balment has been giving his expert opinion on the property market in Plymouth on a regular basis since the magazine was first published in May 2004.

Darren said: “I would say that the biggest change has come about through technology and the impact of the internet. Ten years ago estate agents would spend thousands of pounds every month advertising properties in magazines and newspapers. “Today, internet property sites such as Rightmove, Zoopla, Primelocation and others contain details of literally hundreds of thousands of properties, enabling homebuyers to find exactly what they are looking for in the comfort of their own homes. “And advances in mobile phone technology means that this information is instantly available pretty much wherever you are.” Darren said that sites which carry customer reviews of the service provided by estate agents were also having Darren Lawson, managing director of an impact on the Mansbridge and Balment market. “Customers can now see what other people are saying about their experience of dealing with a particular estate agent or individual. Websites such as Allagents.co.uk provide league tables of the best performing estate agents in a particular city or town which has undoubtedly raised awareness of the standards of service provided.” He said that internet-based estate agents were having little effect on the market. “People still want to be able to come and talk to their estate agent face-to-face.” He said that Mansbridge & Balment placed great emphasis on the quality of customer care and was one of the few

decade estate agents in the city where all the full-time staff were fully qualified with the National Association of Estate Agents. Mansbridge & Balment last autumn introduced a nine-point customer service promise which commits the company in a number of important areas including preparation of details, advertising, viewings, feedback, marketing updates and progress reports on the sales process. “For several years now we have sold more properties in Plymouth than any other estate agent, according to statistics from Guild Intelligence. We put this success down to the quality of our customer service,” he added. Reflecting on the other significant changes in the industry over the last decade, Darren pointed to the tightening of lending criteria which had made it much more difficult for first time buyers to enter the market. “Thankfully, the days of self-certification and 110% mortgages have long since gone, which undoubtedly contributed to the last big property boom which finally ended in 2007 with a dramatic slump partly caused by a big rise in interest rates.” He said that the slump in property prices in the the last quarter of 2007 and into 2008 led to big job losses in the industry, closures and consolidation. “At the peak of the market we employed 40 people, that went down to 10 when the market slumped and I’m pleased to say we are now back up to 25 staff. “We are also introducing Sunday opening from the beginning of May in response to the increased activity in the market.” With house prices showing their biggest annual increase for several years Darren advised homeowners to be realistic about the value of their property and to compare what estate agents are recommending. “It may be tempting to instruct the estate agent who has provided the highest valuation or to choose an agent based on commission levels alone. “But proven local knowledge and a strong track record of success in the area is far more important when it comes to choosing the estate agent who is going to sell your home.”

High Street presence for new heating company

A new company catering for the domestic electrical and heating market has been launched in Plymouth. Vivid Green Eco Systems are setting new standards by offering a high street presence where the customer can benefit from face-to-face contact and discuss their specific needs both before and after the installation of a new heating system. Joint owners of Vivid Green Eco Systems are Tyran Botha and Adrian Cottenham, who have a wealth of experience in the industry. Tyran has been a heating engineer for 12 years, while Adrian has decades of experience in property development and business administration. They launched the company last year and in April opened their impressive new showroom in Hyde Park, just off Mutley Plain. Adrian said: “Our aim is to increase confidence in the heating profession. Consumer confidence in plumbers and heating engineers is often undermined by the fact that homeowners often have to deal with one-man operators who operate from a van and a mobile phone. “We welcome the opportunity to meet potential customers at our new showroom where they can not only visit and look at various boilers and heating equipment, but also discuss their requirements and options with trained professionals.” Tyran said: “We are able to offer customers an excellent service and top quality products by building successful business relationships with leading partner companies, such as Ideal, Stelrad, Plumbing Trade Supplies and Danfoss heating controls. This enables the company to provide a first-class service with high quality products supplied at a competitive price. Vivid Green is also currently enrolling on the accredited Quality Assurance Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) for renewable technologies. “We cover all aspects of general, domestic heating and electrical installations, as well as providing renewable solutions such as air heat pumps and biomass boilers.

“These are becoming more mainstream, especially in new build properties where their increased efficiency and cost saving counts.” Vivid Green has a team of six qualified engineers, as well four administrative staff. As a quality registered PAS2030 company under the Government-approved Green Deal scheme, Vivid Green is approved under licence to install boilers through the Eco Affordable Warmth Scheme. Under this scheme homeowners and tenants of properties can potentially receive a free, or at least heavily subsidised new boiler - depending on eligibility criteria, the condition of their property and the age of the boiler. Adrian said: “This scheme is proving very popular. We have installed over 300 new boilers in the last seven months across Plymouth, Devon and further afield. “The scheme is based on the carbon saving over the lifetime of the boiler and is arguably one of the best energy-saving initiatives launched by the Government.” Tyran added: “The administration and paperwork involved in the scheme is extremely detailed, but we now have a successful track record in the installation of new boilers as part of this important initiative.” In addition to its other accreditations, Vivid Green is also an approved contractor on Plymouth City Council’s ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme. Adrian said: “The aim of our company is to provide a new level of customer service and satisfaction above the standard currently found in the industry and give customers confidence in the choices them make.” A finance scheme is to be launched shortly to assist customers in spreading the cost of any work the may require, especially when it is unexpected.

A new clinic has been launched in Plymouth specialising in sports and exercise medicine. Consultant Mike Burdon is one of the only specialists in the South West dealing with sports injuries and other similar problems. Mike said: “For many years as a GP I was aware that there was a need for sports injuries and other problems to be dealt with more effectively. “This was at a time when I was running marathons and training with high mileage, often getting various runningrelated injuries. I could see that there was a need for a specialist who could oversee all aspects of both diagnosis and management of such problems and work alongside other colleagues such as physiotherapists, podiatrists, chiropractors, osteopaths and other doctors from different specialities.”

Consultant Mike unveils new sports medicine clinic Consultant Mike Burdon with his wife Lesley, who is a highly experienced nurse and practice manager at the new clinic

As a result Mike became more interested in sports medicine and initially gained a diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) ten years ago. Soon after this, SEM was officially recognised as its own speciality and Mike then went on to gain a higher qualification with a Msc in Sports Medicine via Bath University. After leaving his post as a GP in a practice for five years, Mike worked across various sports and sporting events gaining considerable experience. He has not only worked with the Great Britain diving team, GB hockey team and England Under 18s football squad, but was also one of the pool of doctors at the London Olympics. He was formally recognised as a consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine by the General Medical Council in December last year - one of less than 100 in the country. “I have always wanted to bring this speciality to a more prominent position in the South West and launched Peninsula Sports Medicine in 2012. In February we established a regular clinic at the Express Diagnostics building in Tamar Science Park allowing us to treat a range of injuries and similar problems.” Mike pointed out the clinic does not only provide medical guidance to sportsmen and women. “We deal with people from all walks of life who may be suffering from conditions such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and a range of problems associated with muscles and joints.” Mike’s wife Lesley, an experienced nurse, assists within the clinic both as practice manager and clinic nurse. “We genuinely believe in what we are doing, helping patients with a diagnosis of their problem and then developing a treatment plan, offering patients informed treatment choices.” The clinic can either provide treatment - such as injections and shockwave therapy - or refer the patient to other specialists. Ultrasound is regularly used to help clinical diagnosis. “An estimated 90 per cent of sports injuries do not require surgery, so we are ideally placed to provide non-surgical management of injuries.” Patients with private medical insurance can be seen at the clinic as well as patients who wish to self-pay for their care. Mike and Lesley are also hoping to commission the clinic for NHS patients in the near future. In addition to running the clinic Mike has provided expert sports medicine care to military personnel for the last six years, with a regular clinic at HMS Drake in Plymouth. In the future he plans to offer information evenings for GPs, physiotherapists and other specialists to improve their understanding of sports and exercise medicine.

Nurse Sandra Riggs was not happy with her smile. Her teeth had deteriorated over the years and it was affecting her self-confidence. Sandra, who works at Derriford Hospital said: “Whenever photographs were being taken I would hide at the back or cover my mouth. I was very conscious of the way my smile looked and was very unhappy as a result.” Sandra decided it was time to take professional advice and contacted John Moore Dental at 51, Houndiscombe Road, Plymouth. “I knew John from some treatment many years ago and he has also treated my mum and sister in the past, so I had no hesitation in choosing him to carry out the necessary treatment,” said Sandra, who lives near Saltash. Like all patients considering cosmetic treatment, Sandra had an initial discussion with clinical manager Chrissie Edwards before then having a free consultation with John Moore to establish what she wanted to achieve and the options available. John said: “It is important that we discuss thoroughly what the patient wants and what is likely to be involved in terms of treatment and costs. We can show the patient examples of what has been achieved with other people who have had similar problems. “Once the patient has decided to go ahead, we then prepare images of a ‘trial smile’ by designing temporary materials which can be used before starting with the full course of treatment.” Using 3D-scans and advanced technology John was able to design and manufacture new strong and durable porcelain crowns and veneers for Sandra. The course of treatment lasted around six months and involved several visits to John Moore Dental. Sandra said: “John was thorough, approachable and totally professional. I always felt completely at ease, relaxed and in safe hands. “I was always provided with a detailed treatment plan and the costs involved. My preferences were always openly discussed.” To help with costs, interest-free or low cost finance is available for cosmetic treatment. A free initial consultation with John Moore is available for anyone who wants to change their own smile. “Everyone at the practice is always very welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere is calm and relaxed,” added Sandra. Sandra now has regular checkups with John and also with hygienist Jo. Her daughter Jessica has also started a course of treatment with John. Sandra added: “I am always complimented on my lovely smile thanks to John Moore and his team.” Since getting her new smile, Sandra has now also become a regular customer at Hair at 51, the hairdressing salon based in the same building as John Moore. She showed off her new smile Sandra takes the opportunity and her new hair style for our to visit Hair at 51 for a new photographer. Mutley Chiropractor hair style from Annette and the Nikita Beauty Salon are also Ramsey located at No 51. Sandra said: “John Moore’s slogan is ‘love your smile’ - I certainly love mine now.”

HEALTH MATTERS

Specialists in dealing with the Most people suffer trauma at some stage of their lives. It may come as a result of an accident or bereavement or through events in early childhood. Trauma can lead to depression, anxiety, insomnia, anger, fear and a complex range of other debilitating symptoms. Dealing with the effects of trauma calls for specialist skills, such as those offered by Plymouth-based SSL Therapy Services. SSL was established just under two years ago to offer a range of psychological services including therapy, counselling, training, supervision and personal injury services. The company is run by Simon Cook, a qualified nurse in learning disabilities and a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, and Sarah Wimpress a psychologist who has 10 years experience working in the NHS and eight years of private practice. Simon has over 12 years’ experience in working with clients with learning disabilities, developing a unique understanding of their needs and helping individuals with disabilities to overcome a range of issues including trauma, anxiety and depression. Sarah is also an accredited cognitive behavioural therapist as well as being a trained practitioner of EMDR - Eye movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing - a powerful psychological treatment method developed by a leading American clinical psychologist in the 1980s. Simon said: “We established SSL because we wanted to provide an alternative to NHS therapy in Plymouth and East Cornwall. Waiting times for treatment with the NHS can often run into several months and patients invariably need an

58\

option for rapid assessment and treatment recommendation and therapy. “Dealing with the psychological impact of trauma quickly and professionally is essential if patients are to make a full and speedy recovery. This is particularly true in the case of accidents and injuries.” Sarah added: “We wanted to ensure waiting times were kept to an absolute minimum and treatment was tailored to the individual needs of each patient, including choosing a therapist with the appropriate credentials to fully support their needs. “If not dealt with quickly, the psychological impact of trauma can be far reaching and long term suffering is common. This is also true in the case of accidents and injuries.” SSL provides a personal injury assessment service, dealing with individuals referred by solicitors after suffering an accident in the workplace or road traffic accident. They can also deal with patients who self-refer to SSL. The company works closely with the personal injury department of Plymouth-based solicitors Gard & Co as well other legal practices in the area. SSL offer therapy, brief assessment and treatment reports and medico legal reports for the client on behalf of the client’s solicitor. Sarah said: “This type of work can support a person’s recovery on a psychological level and can also assist with court proceedings. “Historically, people have spent time suffering psychologically before they have had treatment. rustic anymore it’s a marketing machine for a big industry that many retailers want a piece of. Container gardening has seen a large increase as gardens become smaller and people want to change their colours and themes from season to season. It’s also acceptable to grow in any type of container now, from old wellies to beautiful traditional pots! As less people have bought their own homes in recent years or have chosen to live in flats and apartments, pots, containers and window sill gardening has grown in popularity. Consumers are no longer following old gardening plans and themes they are having a go and chucking it in! Driven by the Chelsea Flower Show we have seen a real increase in demand for herbaceous perennials, gardens with a mix of shrubs with a large emphasis on naturalistic plants and wildlife loving plants. It’s all about colour, really vibrant colours, scent, pots, fashion, growing on obelisks instead of walls, wildflowers and its certainly not boring any more we have even gone from ‘British Bake Off’ to ‘Rake off’ with Allotment Challenges now on TV – brilliant! So, in an industry worth over £4.6 billion, is it a bed of roses for retailers and suppliers? Well, not really: the last 10 years have really been challenging particularly the last few years. The garden retail market has been in decline, but this is no surprise as record rainfall in key months for consecutive years has reduced garden centre sales by 40 per cent in certain months. With garden centres only really doing the bulk of their sales

the Noughties! in four months of the year, if these are lost you simply cannot recover them. Add to this the downturn in the economy and we have seen a number of garden centres, nurseries and more recently a wholesale sundry supplier collapse and disappear which is very sad. The long term challenge for garden centres has been to protect themselves from seasonality yet for us to try to remain true to our core gardening business. Large destination garden centres pop up and some are criticised for not really being a garden centre, but in reality gardening sales alone will not provide a return on investment these days. Similarly to ride these waves of uncertain trading times we have developed other departments including a strong catering offer. Our coffee shop took a frustrating seven years to build as we faced planning and heritage issues on top of turbulent trading times. But it will change the dynamic of the business with a real emphasis on impulse gardening as consumers visiting will be attracted to ready made quick gardening products. Gifts, clothing (although we started in the recession which was difficult) the coffee shop, Christmas and on site

to Monty Don - TV shows still growing popularity of gardening

Our advantage is that we try our hardest to look after the customers and provide an excellent shopping experience, our garden centre is certainly quirky and full of character but good gardening is still our main passion and focus. We support the customers and businesses in our community employing local people and using local nurseries. As far as the future is concerned, there is no doubt that you always have to be positive and drive your business, if you stand still you will fall behind. While gardening has been declining we hope that we can attract younger generations to become the gardeners of the future and hope that house building and home owning will increase to have the knock-on demand for gardening products. We are not daft – there are only so many pots you can have on the patio and shrubs you can fit in your established garden! I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Plymouth Magazine on their 10th anniversary and thank them for the continued opportunity to write for the magazine. Happy Gardening – Fiona!

Expert grounds maintenance concessions such as Maidenhead Aquatics provide valuable income all year round, which helps to protect the garden centre business as a whole. With online retailing taking more furniture and barbecue sales, the supermarkets taking flowers and houseplants and starting on many more gardening lines, garden centres have no option but to diversify into other areas, but still try to relate these areas to gardening to improve the overall consumer offering and experience. At the last count we believe we have over 30 competitors in one form or another within a five mile radius of the Plymouth Garden Centre here in Crownhill. Garden retailing seems attractive to many and, yes, when the sun shines its great, but it is also a vulnerable world to be in. But for me this is part of the challenge and no different to other businesses which are weather dependent. As an independent, family-run garden centre we think on our feet, we do try to plan based on our experience, but ultimately we make sure we are flexible enough to adapt quickly to market changes as we compete against the big boys like the multiples and leading chains of garden centres.
