Barbican will be buzzing in June with two big events

Dream Bathrooms Limited making your dream bathroom come true

Plymouth’s historic Barbican will be even busier than usual this month with the return of the popular Barbican International Jazz and Blues Festival while Sutton Harbour hosts for the first time La Solitaire du Figaro – one of the world’s leading single-handed yacht races. The two events will be taking place between June 11 and June 15 and are sure to attract many thousands of visitors to the city. We have details about both events on pages 30 to 33 of this edition as part of our big What’s On section. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Plymouth Magazine in style in May with a special event at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. It was a fantastic evening and we were all humbled by the many kind comments and words of encouragement from the guests who attended. We are proud of what has been achieved with the magazine in the past decade, but we don’t want to rest on our laurels. As you will have seen we have recently introduced one or two design changes - and now we want to look at ways of further improving the magazine’s appeal and effectiveness. One of the things we are doing is running an online survey for readers to tell us what they think about the magazine and what, if any, improvements they would like to see made. Our aim over the last 10 years has been to promote the good things about this great city of ours by publishing positive stories about local people, local businesses and organisations and local events. By taking part in the survey you will help us shape the content of the magazine in the coming months and years - so we really want to hear from as many of you as possible. And there’s the chance to win a mini-break in the fabulous Tower Suite at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. You can find details of how to take part on page 55 of this issue. Happy reading! WOMEN AT WORK

Annette’s leap of faith

The Plymouth Magazine June 2014

WOMEN AT WORK Plymouth mother of three Annette Laurie has quite literally taken a leap of faith to launch her own business. Annette, who lives in Plymstock has set up LEAP - which stands for Laurie Events and Projects - to organise and promote producer markets at locations across the city. “I have never run my own business before, but I just felt the time was right to put all my previous experience to good use,” said 53-year-old Annette. Her varied work experience has included training and practising in the legal field, six years in the Royal Navy, more than 25 years as a a Royal Navy Reservist, a spell working in public relations for a local MP, five years in a management role at the Plymouth City Centre Company and more than a year as assistant manager of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership. Her roles with the City Centre Company and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership were heavily involved in the running and creation of Plymouth’s two Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). “In my time with the two BIDs I was involved in organising many events citywide with the aim of attracting more visitors and increasing trade for local retailers,” said Annette. “When it became clear at the end of last year that funding for my post with the Waterfront Partnership was not to be renewed I found myself at something of a crossroads. “Another job was open to me, but I felt that the time was right for a change of career direction. Over the years I had developed good organisational and admin skills and I love working with people. “In March I set up my own company called LEAP to organise

events and projects locally,” she added. Annette has so far concentrated on running local producer markets featuring arts, crafts, pottery, jewellery and other products, as well as locally sourced food ‘goodies.’ “I want to support local producers and artisans and provide them with opportunities to sell their wares at a variety of local venues. “When I started out I had the details of about 20 local producers, mainly through the work I did in helping to organise the Royal William Yard Christmas market when I was working with the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership. “I have learned so much from the local producers and now have over 300 contacts on my database. I keep them up to speed with events through a monthly online newsletter and also offer them incentives to get involved.” Local LEAP events are taking place on the second Sunday of each month at Sutton Harbour, beside the China House Pub & Restaurant, and on the third Saturday of each month at Plymstock Broadway Shopping Centre. Annette has organised successful Mother’s Day and Easter markets and is planning special markets to coincide with events such as the Barbican International Jazz Event and La Figaro du Soleil in June and the Sutton Harbour Classic Boat Rally between July 25 and 28. She is also planning special markets in Plymstock Broadway for Carnival Day on August 30, November 19 for the Broadway Christmas lights switch-on and a Christmas Market between

There are so many different retailers there and with free parking it is an ideal place to shop. We hope the monthly market will help to attract more shoppers. “While our Easter market was supposed to be open for two days, it had to be cancelled on the Sunday due to extremely bad weather. But there has been very positive feedback from the stallholders and local retailers alike. “Members of the public have endorsed the market and expressed their delight as well. One person told us ‘this is just what we need here - really well done for making it happen. I am so pleased.’ Annette is also hoping to support events in Devonport Park and is working with the Friends of Devonport Park. “I hope to create a hub of markets across the city and surrounding area. A ‘hidden epidemic’ - right under our feet Thousands of people in Plymouth are suffering pain and discomfort because of what has been described as a ‘hidden epidemic’.

The condition affects an estimated one in ten of the population and leads to pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. According to owner of Foot Solutions Andrew Scowcroft it can cause intense pain which in many cases severely affects mobility. Andrew said: “the symptoms include pain in the bottom of the foot, especially at the front or centre of the heel bone. The pain is often worse when first getting out of bed in the morning or when standing up after any long period of sitting”. He said the condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including standing for several hours a day, weight gain or wearing inappropriate footwear. GP’s will often recommend rest or antiinflammatory medication. In more severe cases, cortisone injections may be administered. Podiatrist Karen Scowcroft said: “Although

This diagram shows how the correct support can help to avoid excessive ‘rolling’ of the foot

this can be affective, these actions simply deal with the symptoms and not the root cause of the condition”. The technical name for this problem is Plantar Fasciitis. “The condition occurs when the foot is put under excessive strain usually due to the foot rolling inwards. This results in small micro-tears in the fascia, inflammation and

in turn pain. For many people this has the impact of time off work, reduction in sporting activities and a general disruption to their quality of life”. Andrew said that Foot Solutions provide a full assessment of the clients feet using advanced technology and supply custom made arch supports which control the movement of the foot and prevent muscle strain. “This approach, coupled with the correct footwear can provide a long term solution to the problem of Plantar Fasciitis,” he added. Recruitment consultant and enthusiastic runner Andrea Mahn had undergone a range of treatments for Plantar Fasciitis, but nothing eased the pain – until she visited Foot Solutions. “The staff were knowledgeable and attentive and they identified the problem. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined. “Now I don’t suffer. I can do my job and my running and enjoy the experience, rather than being in constant pain. “I will never buy shoes from anywhere else again but Foot Solutions.”

Foot Pain? Knee Pain? Back Pain? The right footwear with the right arch support can very often alleviate pain in your back or knees as well as your feet. Why suffer when a visit to Foot Solutions could be the answer. We use the latest technology to fully assess your feet and can then recommend comfortable footwear and customised arch support for your specific needs. Step in to Foot Solutions for your FREE foot assessment today.

ART MATTERS

Sheron’s masterclass in This month’s Art Matters comes from a fabulous creative studio set in a barn conversion on the edge of Plympton. When I visited Sheron King, the director of Mad Hatters Studio, I felt like I was stepping onto a movie set. Although calm and peaceful, there was so much creativity around me I could almost hear it crackle in the atmosphere! This delightful, quirky cottage was full of beautiful, inspiring pieces of art. They were not so much ‘on show’ as if they were being displayed in a gallery - they were part of the very fabric of the place. By The studio oozes Kerry Cole aesthetic charm and quite frankly has the feel of an artist’s paradise. Surrounded by an amazing garden and part of a historic complex going back to connections with Sir Francis Drake, the studio is an ideal setting for creative workshops. Sheron told me: “This studio is host to many textile and mixed media workshops Sheron King with some well known exciting people coming to run them. As well as hosting the workshops, I have developed my own brand and line of up cycled textile products and ceramics with a heavy emphasis on sustainable practice and eco awareness.” Soaking up the environment, it was obvious to me that

Sheron has an addiction to intense vibrant colours, patterns, textures and the intriguing visual richness that comes with layers. Inspired and influenced from items in second hand shops, car boot sales, jumble sales and items donated from family and friends, she has a continually growing collection of ephemera, vintage fabrics, buttons, lace, wools, threads, beads, labels etc. Sheron said: “These items act as a source of inspiration, form the materiality of my studio workspace and become a part of the narrative of the work I produce through an intuitive and emotional response to the materials. “I am fascinated by the previous life history that belongs to old fabrics and objects - I like the idea of preserving these intriguing and often pretty memories or to investigate ways in which they can be remade into something new to be loved and cherished again. “I have also gathered much inspiration by my travels to India, Turkey and Africa.” Sheron’s work has developed over the last few years from mixed media/textile and ceramic works through the studying of BA Hons 3D design and MA Contemporary Design at Plymouth University. Her pieces are very contemporary with a bohemian flavour and hint of opulence. She constructs hand built pieces with intense surface pattern and uses collected fabric pieces and objects to create texture and pattern- often making ceramic reference to seams, stitches, buttons, fastenings and zips. When asked about her philosophy, Sheron said: “To

colourful creativity recycle, up cycle, reuse and reinvent post consumer textiles with the challenge of the idea of breathing new life and transformation into discarded and forgotten things is my goal – why use new materials when so many old ones are going to waste? “I feel very strongly about stewardship as well as part of the wider society to raise awareness of ecological issues and reducing the impact of design and lifestyle on the environment - often through a consumer driven society. “The holistic approach workshops reuse materials, so my aim is to inspire and encourage others to explore their own creative potential raising self esteem, self image and environmental awareness.” I highly recommend Mad Hatters Studios creative workshops. One of the most heroic polar expeditions will be celebrated in Plymouth in August. It was in August 1914 that Sir Ernest Shackleton set sail from Millbay Docks in his ship The Endurance to head to the South Pole. He planned a new ambitious expedition to cross the Antarctic from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea, via the South Pole. Unfortunately the Endurance became trapped in the Weddell Sea ice, was then crushed and sank. Shackleton inspired his men to survive by first leading them over the ice and then in small boats to Elephant Island. Most of them stayed there for four winter months sheltering under two upturned boats in the harshest of conditions with the bare minimum to survive. Shackleton then miraculously sailed a 22 foot whaler across 800 nautical miles of the roughest ocean in the world to South Georgia to raise the alarm. By then the expedition had lasted two years and Shackleton showed remarkable leadership qualities by accompanying a rescue boat to retrieve the 22 stranded men on Elephant Island. The following year he accompanied the rescue ship which reached the Ross Sea Party which was awaiting his overland arrival across the continent. The centenary of the remarkable expedition will be marked with the Shackleton 100 event between August 6 and 8 at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, which is where Shackleton spent his last night before setting sail on The Endurance on August 8 1914. The celebration has been organised by the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society in partnership with Plymouth University and is expected to attract hundreds of polar enthusiasts, scientists, direct descendants of Shackleton and his crew, members of the James Caird Society - which was established to honour the leadership and achievements of Shackleton – and VIPs. The guest of honour will be the Hon Alexandra Shackleton, grand-daughter of Sir Ernest. At midday on August 8 2014 there will be a re-enactment of the departure by the historic sailing ship Phoenix from Clyde Quay in Millbay Docks with a display by the Plymouth Pipe Band and the Antarctic Adventurers. Prior to the re-enactment a plaque marking the centenary will be unveiled at Millbay by the Hon Alexandra Shackleton. She will perform a similar unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the hotel on the first night of the event. Other activities will include a formal centenary dinner on August 7, along with a programme of talks and discussions. Jon Morcom, director of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting such a prestigious programme of activities. The Devon and Cornwall Polar Society meet regularly at the hotel and last year staged a special event as part of the Duke’s 150th anniversary.” Tickets are available for the centenary dinner and also the various talks which will be taking place.

It’s business as usual despite bridge works

FOOD MATTERS

Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium and Rockfish restaurant are very much open for business in June - despite the pedestrian swing bridge to the Barbican being closed for urgent repairs. The swing bridge over the local gates at Sutton Harbour is not expected to re-open until early July. During this period customers will be able to use an alternative pedestrian route from the Barbican, around the perimeter of Sutton Harbour to access the Aquarium and adjacent Rockfish restaurant. The route will be clearly signposted and access for visitors travelling by car will be unaffected. Dr David Gibson, managing director at the National Marine Aquarium said: “We understand that the works to the swing bridge are essential, and will be working closely with Sutton Harbour and the Environment Agency to minimise disruption to Aquarium visitors during this time.” Rockfish’s restaurant and take-away will be open normal hours throughout and they will be giving those diners who eat with them during the bridge closure time a money-off voucher for their next visit. Rockfish proprietor Mitch Tonks (pictured right) said: “It is really positive that Sutton Harbour Holdings are committed to maintaining the bridge and to further developing Sutton Harbour, although we realise that this may be seen as inconvenient for some of our customers but there is plenty of parking behind us in the car park and we are just a stroll over from the Barbican on the heritage trail. “June is a great month to be eating outside in Plymouth so we hope to still have a packed restaurant and take-away.” Rockfish will celebrate its first anniversary in June.

FOOD MATTERS Award-winning chef Martyn Scott is relishing his latest culinary challenge. He has called time on running the Fisherman’s Arms at Lambhay Street in the Barbican and launched a new eatery, appropriately called Scott’s Cafe and Brasserie. Located at the former Rocky’s Grill on Southside Street, Scott’s is offering all-day dining with breakfast, lunch and dinner on offer. Martyn said: “We had six good years at the Fisherman’s, but it was definitely time to move on. When the opportunity came along to launch Scott’s it was too good to miss. “I now have a much larger operation with twice as many covers, a bigger and better kitchen and a prominent location in the heart of the Barbican.” Martyn is one of Plymouth’s best-known chefs having previously been at the Lemon Tree and Blues Bar. He is a regular celebrity chef at the Flavour Fest and has also taken part in Plymouth’s Seafood Festival. He said: “We’re offering all-day dining because there is definitely demand for it in the Barbican. Our aim is to serve

Martyn’s offers allgood quality food at affordable prices from early in the morning until late at night. “We specialise in modern British food with a classic French base, providing stimulating food with real taste. We have a host of local suppliers offering only the freshest, ethically sourced ingredients. “Our menus change with the seasons and we are always looking to bring fresh, responsibly sourced food to the table. “We have a special board in the restaurant which highlights the seasonal produce that we are featuring on our menu at any one time.” “All of our dishes are cooked fresh to order and feature a lot of home-made items. For example, we smoke our own bacon and make our own bread and butter when time permits. Sausages are specially made for us by a well-known local butcher. Martyn and his 10-strong team want to appeal to the widest range of customers and tastes as possible and have a variety of menu options to choose from. “Breakfasts are proving particularly popular at the weekends and are getting busier during the week as well,” he said. “We serve breakfast seven days a week from 9am to 11.30am. Our full English breakfast includes seven items for just £6.95 - including home-made baked beans. Or you can just come in for a coffee and read the papers in our lounge area.” Martyn has also put together an attractively-priced lunch and pre-theatre menu, which is available from 12 noon to 7pm from Monday to Friday. With two courses for £9.95 and three courses for £13.95 it is already proving popular with Plymouth diners. The Brasserie menu is available from 12 noon until late from Monday to Saturday and from 5pm until late on Sundays. It features a choice of 10 popular dishes - such as West Country moules and frites, Thai style crab cakes and mushroom cobbler – priced from as little as £8.95. Sunday lunch is available from 12 noon to 5pm with a choice of three starters, four mains and a selection of home-made desserts. Fine dining is featured on the dinner menu, which is available Mondays to Saturdays from 7pm until late. Starters from £5 each include inventive dishes such as blowtorched

Plymouth Symphony to Spain for its concert inspiration The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Spanish Collection’ concerts in June will be a wonderful and lively celebration of orchestral works influenced by the colourful rhythms and traditions of Spain. The concerts are at Plymouth Guildhall on Wednesday June 18 at 7.30pm and Sterts Theatre, Liskeard on Sunday June 22 at 5.30pm. The programme will reflect the distinctive flavours of the Spanish influence on composers from France, Russia and Spain itself. This varied programme, featuring late 19th and early 20th century compositions, demonstrates a variety of styles and techniques and all of the pieces reveal true Spanish influences in dramatic orchestration, dance-like rhythms and colourful harmonies. This celebration of Spanish music features a number of very well known Classical favourites such as Ravel’s Bolero, Manuel de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance and Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol. Also included are Chabrier’s Espana, Albeniz’s Fete Dieu a Seville, Suite No2 from de Falla’s The Three Cornered Hat and Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso. The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra regularly performs challenging music, ranging from traditional to contemporary. It is one of the longest-established orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 138 years. The orchestra attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor, Jennifer Pike and Bartosz Woroch amongst the most recent performers to play with the orchestra.

Funeral Planning... 2014 has brought with it a sense of optimism and clarity that appears to be focusing our clients’ minds in surprising ways - many of them are choosing to put in place funeral plans - and as one doesn’t normally associate optimism and funeral planning we thought we would share with you the reasons why our clients are choosing to invest in this valuable service. Earlier this year The Mail published an article detailing how the average cost of a funeral currently stands at about £3,400 and is estimated to rise to approximately £8,500 in the next 8 to 10 years. Our clients are telling us that they do not want friends and family to be burdened with trying to find this money, especially as they are aware that these costs will usually need to be paid long before their estate is settled and any cash freed up. Additionally, many people plan for their funeral in their will, which is often not read until after the funeral has been held. Pre-planning a funeral ensures that you get the funeral you want with the added

benefit of making an already difficult time simpler and less stressful for bereaved loved ones. However, in spite of the obvious benefits, the hardship of recent years seems to have made people far more cautious about how they spend and invest their money, and so discerning clients are looking for funeral plans that not only offer excellent value, but also represent a secure investment. The funeral plans sold by Richardsons Legal Services are provided by an established and reputable firm with an excellent track record, and the money paid is held in a trust that cannot be used for any other purpose than to pay for a funeral.

For further information, contact David Richardson of Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 014 8031. Richardsons Legal Services are qualified, fully Insured, subject to voluntary regulation, and are approved by Trading Standards in their “Buy with Confidence” scheme.

Following the success of the America’s Cup in 2011 it’s hoped the Solitaire du Figaro will reinforce Plymouth’s position as Britain’s Ocean City and one of the leading sailing destinations in Europe, if not the world. In July, the annual Sutton Harbour Classic Boat Rally will return for the 27th year. Taking place from Friday July 25 to Monday 28 July, the festival promises four days of fun on the water along with shoreside entertainment including live music on the quay. Among the historic ships visiting for the Rally in 2014 are two of the Dunkirk little ships, Tom Tit and Elvin, both of which are also on the National Register of Historic Ships. Tom Tit was built by K. R. Skentlebery in Plymouth and was used for general harbour duties here until she was moved to Ramsgate in 1940, just prior the Dunkirk evacuation. Elvin was at Ramsgate and rescued 23 soldiers from the conflict. There will be a visit from Shamrock, the Plymouth’s Sam Goodchild, who will be last surviving competing in La Solitaire du Figaro singleTamar Sailing Barge, and there handed yacht race may also be a special return appearance from the Gypsy Moth IV, the boat used by Francis Chichester to circumnavigate the globe in 1966. Family fun at Sutton Harbour this year will include the Plymouth Ocean City Festival, Ecover Blue Mile and Seafood Festival in September. This year there will also be regular arts and crafts markets on Marrowbone Slip, by the China House Pub & Restaurant, showcasing a wide range of local producers. (see story on page 6).

American musicians will be playing close to the Mayflower Steps at the Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival 2014. Mississippi blues guitar-man Robin Henkel will headline the event, which takes place from June 13 to 15 on The Barbican, close to where the Pilgrims left for the New World in 1620. The Festival’s music programme is due to run between midday and 9pm on Friday and Saturday, midday to 7pm on the Sunday on an outdoor stage entertaining onlookers with excellent – and free – music. Robin Henkel will be joined by Ric Lee, award-winning drummer and descendant of Robert E. Lee, the head of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War. The pair will appear on Friday night at the Festival, performing vintage blues in front of the crowds at this free outdoor event. They will be joined by South Westbased soul-blues singer Mama Tokus. “It’s great that we have got some Americans flying into play our event,” said Dan Thompson, festival director. “We’re showcasing two great American artforms: blues and jazz. It’s perfect that we’re welcoming musicians from across The Pond.” Robin and Ric join a series of headline acts that will excite audiences hungry for good music. Friday night sees a performance by Dom Pipkin and the Ikos – a rip-roaring New Orleans piano outfit. The band brings the classic sound of New Orleans funk D

It will also look at the impact of the war on local people’s lives – touching on recruitment, conscription, the fighting, the cost, the aftermath and the ‘home front’. The exhibition features items, images and documents from the city’s arts, heritage and archive collections. This is not just a standard review of the First World War from start to finish. BUSINESS MATTERS The historic Devonport Guildhall can now be the unique setting for non-religious funeral ceremonies in Plymouth. The impressive Grade I listed building is now a thriving community hub and social enterprise. In the past the building served as a Town Hall, Magistrates Court, a police station, library and even a mortuary. Today Devonport Guildhall, which hosts exhibitions, community group activities, events, weddings and conferences, announced that it is extending its offer to Plymouth people as a venue for nonreligious funeral ceremonies. Built in 1822 by renowned architect John Foulston, Devonport Guildhall features a stunning Greek-inspired columned façade, while its Main Hall has impressive high ceilings, stained glass windows and period features. Devonport Guildhall’s commercial manager Claire Burgess said: “The beauty of the Main Hall is that it is a light, airy and versatile space so that we can create a personalised setting for any occasion or event. “When visitors walk into the Main Hall they comment on how beautiful and impressive it is, but also how intimate and friendly it feels. We want to provide a venue which meets the needs of all generations in the city – from naming ceremonies and weddings to funerals and memorial events. “We understand that more people in Plymouth are choosing a non-religious funeral and throughout its history Devonport Guildhall has adapted in the way it serves the community.” Plymouth civil funeral celebrant Wendy Coulton said: “For a city population the size of Plymouth, the bereaved are poorly served at the moment in terms of providing choice of venue for non-religious funerals. The majority are held at the local crematorium and on a lesser scale in the non-denominational chapel at Ford Park cemetery and occasionally at Plymouth Albion rugby ground. “I approached Devonport Guildhall about hosting funerals because the building is special. The Main Hall is beautiful and welcoming but it is also versatile in the way the room can be used for funerals attended by 50 to 200 mourners. “Traditional chapel settings have regimented pew seating and fixed lecterns. At Devonport Guildhall we can use the space and arrange the seating and layout as the bereaved wish. It will enable Plymouth families to pay their respects and give thanks for the life of the person who has died in their own way and in their own time. “Devonport Guildhall should be commended for recognising that this is a wonderful way to serve the community and I hope other appropriate venues in Plymouth will be more open-minded about hosting funerals, wake receptions and memorial events. If the person who has died had a particular affection or connection with a place it may be more comforting for the bereaved to hold the funeral there when the time comes. “We are very grateful to David Parslow of Walter C Parson funeral directors for supporting this initiative from the outset and providing valuable practical guidance to ensure the building is fit for this purpose. In time it would be fantastic if city funeral directors could offer their clients a range of venue options for non-religious funerals.”

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth , Coun Vivien Pengelly cuts the ribbon to mark the re-opening of the Lawsons store in Plymouth’s Cornwall Street. She is accompanied (from lefT) by Liz Lawson, Richard Duddridge and chef Jacques Marchal

One of Plymouth’s best-known family businesses has been marking a special milestone in its history. On Saturday May 10 Lawsons celebrated their 110th anniversary. Family run since 1904, Lawsons has seen many changes in retailing in its 11 decades of trading as an independent retailer. The Lord Mayor of Plymouth Cllr Vivien Pengelly reopened the Plymouth store with special guest Jacques Marchal and Liz Lawson, managing director and Richard Duddridge, branch manager in attendance. The late Frances Thomas Butterfield Lawson (known as Tom) established the company in 1904 when he opened the first Lawsons shop on Frankfort Street, Plymouth. Here the shop began selling tools to the Dockyard and apprentice craftsmen. In March 1941 when it was completely destroyed during the blitz. Lawsons continued to trade on Compton Street, until that too was bombed. When Plymouth city centre was re-built Lawsons moved into 71 New George Street where they stayed for over 50 years. During this time the store expanded into toys, kitchenware and cake decorating. Since then three new Lawsons stores have been opened, Totnes in 1979, Tavistock in 1992 and in 2006 Lawsons bought an existing hardware business in the centre of Ivybridge. In 2000 Lawsons started trading online and continue to expand this side of the business today. The current managing director, Liz Lawson, is the great granddaughter of the founder. ‘We have so many events for customers to look forward to across the year’ said Liz Lawson. ‘Trading in Plymouth is a part of our history and definitely part of our future. We enjoy being part of Plymouth’s trading community and we were delighted to be supported by the Lord Mayor.”

TRAINING MATTERS People choose to train in massage, anatomy and physiology, sports massage, aromatherapy, reflexology for a variety of reasons. Some for interest in a new subject, some to add to their skills, and some, like me, to change career. Some of you will know that 10 years ago I was a partner in a local law firm, where I practiced child-care law, but due to illness, had to give up a career, that I had wanted to do since I was a child. I went into law from working in the dockyard; it was DML then and I had worked for a lawyer who saw some potential in me and encouraged me to follow leave work and pursue law as a career. I did, I worked my way to partnership, and then illness brought this all to a crashing end. So, what do you do when you have to find a new career? For me, I asked my wife! She suggested that I do something different, but I had no idea what, and she suggested a massage course. I went along on a Monday night and took my ITEC (International Therapy Education Council) holistic massage with anatomy and physiology. I also studied reflexology on the Tuesday night, at the time I had no idea what reflexology was!! I then studied aromatherapy, hot stone massage and on-site massage (seated acupressure), I became a Massage in Schools Instructor and I then studied sports and remedial Massage. Although I had been practicing as a massage therapist, it was the skills I learned on the Level 4 Sports and Remedial Massage course that gave me the confidence to treat people effectively. During this time, I was fortunate to work for Plymouth Albion RFC as their Massage Therapist. After a few years in practice I studied for my Level 5 in Advanced Sports Therapy, my Level 5 in Advanced Clinical Sports Therapy and the a BSc In Applied Sports Therapy. In October 2013, I moved the clinic practice to The Millfields, this was to enable me to have a classroom to be able to teach massage. During my massage training I also took my teaching exams as the plan was, at some stage, to teach massage. This was brought forward when the Active Health Group (www. achivehealthgroup.org.uk) decided to allow me to teach their Level 5 Advanced Sports Therapy Diploma from Plymouth, there is no other independent massage training school that can teach their courses! So, the clinic and training school are now in The Millfields offering Sports Massage training at levels 3, 4 and 5, Sports Therapy Training at level 5, and Myofascial Release Training at level 4. All are nationally and internationally recognised qualifications, which lead to professional membership of the Sports Therapy Organisation and are fully insurable through several insurance companies. We also offer training in a range of other therapies and treatments as well as running Continuing Professional Development Courses for therapists who are already qualified but do not have the time to train for a higher level qualification. We run weekend workshops in Muscle Energy Technique, Soft Tissue Release, Deep Tissue Massage, Trigger Point Massage, Neuro Muscular Technique, Taping and Strapping, and Myofascial Postural Alignment. Active Health Plymouth also runs a complete range of First Aid Training, we offer Emergency First Aid at Work, three day First Aid at Work, Sports First Aid, Paediatric First Aid, Sports Trauma Management, and CPR and AED training. Active Health Plymouth offer nationally and internationally recognised courses that are validated by ITEC (International Therapies Education Council), AHA (Active Health Awards), STO (Sports Therapy Organisation), and AoFAQ (Association of First Aiders Qualifications). Our philosophy is to share your journey and only enter you for examinations when you and we feel you are ready. We believe in the learning journey, the more you know, the more comfortable you will feel in providing an excellent treatment. We have a Wednesday evening drop in for all student therapists and qualified therapists (doors open at 6pm, everyone is welcome) where we share ideas and just meet other therapists from other disciplines. Some times we will have a presentation from one of our tutors or a guest tutor/therapist, future presentations will be on assessments of shoulder, knee, hip etc., rehabilitation skills, and research literacy skills for therapists. If you are interested in changing your career or just want to learn

TRAVEL MATTERS

Senegal has plenty to offer holidaymakers - but brush up your French first!

Wildlife in abundance in Senegal - this is the National Bird Park of Djoudi

I have been very fortunate to have visited a vast majority of the world but contrary to my friends belief I haven’t been everywhere. I was therefore very interested in a recent holiday that one of my well-travelled clients has had. Mary and her husband have just returned from a holiday to Senegal and below is an account of her experience in this reasonably unknown African country. Mary writes: I have been asked to write a short account about our recent holiday in Senegal. My husband and I spent 17 days in the West African country in March, seven days on an organised tour and ten days at a beach resort. Senegal surrounds the much smaller country of The Gambia and is French speaking having gained its independence from France in 1960. It is worth mentioning at this point that not much English is spoken so it really is of benefit if someone in your party has some By Travel French language skills! Expert The country’s main sources of income are Anthony Goord fishing and groundnut (peanut) cultivation. The tourist industry has suffered a recent decline due to the recession in Europe which has been exacerbated by a concentration on French speaking tourists almost to the exclusion of all others. Senegal has relatively high levels of poverty which has not been helped by increases in world food and energy costs as well as the fall in tourist numbers. The principal religion is Islam and the Muslim population live peacefully alongside the much smaller Christian and Animist groups. The Islam religion allows for men to have up to four wives and a fair percentage of the men take up this option. The women have, on average, three to four children each, leading to large families often surviving on pitiful incomes.

There are no direct flights from the UK to Senegal so we flew into the capital Dakar via Lisbon with Portuguese Airlines. We travelled with ‘The Senegal Experience’ which is part of the Serenity Holidays group. Senegal has recently introduced a tourist visa for which our tour company had an exemption. However, despite having a letter to this effect (in French) we did have a little difficulty getting through immigration. Also recommended are the usual vaccinations, a course of malaria tablets and a yellow fever vaccination. Our last yellow fever vaccination had run out (it lasts ten years) and we were unable to renew it due to a national shortage of the vaccine. This turned out to be not a problem as we had very little bother with mosquitoes during our holiday as March is during the dry season. For the organised tour there were just the two of us and an English speaking guide and a driver who spoke only French. We travelled in a land cruiser which coped well with beaches, deserts, pot holed roads and dirt tracks! Our first stop on the tour was the ‘Pink Lake’ or Lac Rose, Senegal’s equivalent of the Dead Sea. It is so salty that the salt is ‘farmed’ by scooping if off the lake bed. It is mostly used for treating icy roads in Northern Europe. The ‘pinkness’ comes from minerals in the lake but this was not in evidence when we were there. Next was a drive along some of the tracks of the old Paris to Dakar Rally, followed by a drive along the beach to visit both a fishing village where the catch was being unloaded on the beach and the the Lompoul Desert, which was surprisingly near the beach. It is probably worth mentioning at this point that the Senegalese have a very lax attitude to rubbish, which, although tidied away at major tourist sites can spoil other would be tourist attractions. After the desert we headed further north where we spent

Senegal – a country of extremes, from the splendour of Touba to the poverty of its people

two days in the old colonial capital of Port Saint Louis, home to some rather run down colonial buildings and a chaotic and smelly fishing industry. About one and a half hours drive from Saint Louis is the National Bird Park of Djoudi. This amazing place has vast numbers of pelicans, flamingos and other aquatic birds and a few mammals and reptiles. We spent about two hours travelling along the waterways surrounded by birds. It was an early start the next morning as we needed to get to the Holy City of Touba in order to have a tour of the large mosque before the crowds (about 15000) arrived for Friday prayers. Touba is a bit like Mecca to the Senegalese and has an

Friendly people , beaches, wildlife and monuments to its colonial past - Senegal has it all

annual pilgrimage to its very impressive (and rubbish free) mosque. Touba was a stop on the way to our next hotel overlooking the Sine-Saloum delta, which is where the two rivers (Sine and Saloum) form a very extensive delta before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Here we spent three days visiting villages and markets and having boat trips to the mangrove swamps, bird sanctuaries and deserted islands in the delta. It was almost time for the beach part of our holiday, but not before travelling back to Dakar via palm and baobab tree forests, a local school, an inhabited island composed mostly of shells and the managed game reserve of Bandia. In the reserve we saw giraffe, zebra, rhino, buffaloes, various types of deer, ostriches and my favourite, wart hogs as well as other small animals. The final day of sightseeing in Dakar included all the expected stops in an ex-colonial capital city, with its many monuments to independence, including the President’s Palace, Independence Square, parliament building and a relatively modern cathedral. The main part of the day was spent visiting Goree Island. It is car free with bougainvillea filled gardens, narrow streets and some better preserved colonial houses. It is not all tranquillity though as the island used to be a major centre of the slave trade and there are both a slave house and a museum to remind visitors of these facts. As such it is popular with local schoolchildren who visit to learn more about their history. From Goree Island we drove south for about two hours to the resort of Saly where we spent 10 days in a lovely hotel right on the sea. There has been quite a lot of beach erosion along this part of the coast which has lessened access to the shore and to sea swimming in places, so you need to choose a hotel with care. Our hotel, the Espadon, made the best of a bad job and did have a lovely swimming pool area. We didn’t go out of the hotel very much – apart from to eat and drink – as the infrastructure was poor and it was no pleasure walking along the dusty pavement-less streets. There was a bit of hassle from locals trying to sell things or take you places but a firm ‘non merci’ usually sorted them out. All too soon our time was up and we were on our way home. We had enjoyed our holiday. but would warn others that Senegal is quite a third world country and not for the faint hearted! However, the people were friendly, we felt safe the majority of the time, the weather was perfect, the hotels of a reasonable standard, the food was generally good and the beer (local) and wine (French) both good and competitively priced. I hope you enjoyed that fantastic account of Senegal, thank you Mary. Happy Holidays!

The St Luke’s Hospice fund-raisers

From Plymouth to Peru to raise £45,000 for St Luke’s Hospice A group of 10 fundraisers have flown over 6,000 miles to Peru in order to face a challenge of a lifetime in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. The fundraisers left the UK on May 21 and embarked on their adventure as soon as they landed in Peru, trekking through the Andes to finish at the stunning heights of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca site located on a ridge between the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains in Peru. It sits 2,430 metres above sea level on the eastern slope of the Andes and overlooks the Urubamba River hundreds of metres below. The site’s excellent preservation, the quality of its architecture, and the breathtaking mountain vista it occupies has made Machu Picchu one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world today. This adventure served up many challenges along the way, testing their determination as they gave up home comforts for six days of camping with no toilet or shower facilities. They faced the extremes of the wilderness that is the Andes having to acclimatise quickly from freezing conditions to the humidity of the forest coffee plantations. They trekked along the narrow aqueducts alongside the Humantay Glacier whilst acclimatising to an altitude of just under 5,000 metres as they walk through the Salkantay Mountain Pass. The team have had to each personally raise a minimum of £5,000 to take part, involving a whole host of fundraising events including a ball, bucket collections, quizzes, sponsorship from local businesses, family, friends and more. The Machu Picchu Challenge is part of St Luke’s annual overseas challenges and is supported by Radio Plymouth and Faraday Mill. Estimated to raise over £45,000, for many of the fundraisers it is more than just a physical challenge as they are taking part in memory of a loved one and to make a real difference to the patients of St Luke’s. The St Luke’s Macchu Picchu trekkers are: Radio Plymouths Jemma Katy Jones, Warren Bowden; Marcus Smowton; Linda Lawton; Diane Watson; John Saunders; Richard Stimpson; Pete Cook; Jonathan Reed and Rachel Turner from St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. If you have been inspired by this story, St Luke’s have just announced their next overseas challenge to the Great Wall of China in April 2015. One man who has witnessed the changes over the years is Steve Harris of Westward Bathroom Installation and Tiling. He has been in the industry for over 25 years and has overseen the installation of literally hundreds of bathrooms in that time. Steve said: “Baths, showers, taps and all the other fittings have become much more sophisticated in recent years. There are some very hi-tech products out there now and these have helped enhance the design and style of bathrooms. Greens and browns have been replaced with cream and white to change the overall feel and appearance of bathrooms. “Not many years ago you could only get six inch or eight inch tiles - now they are readily available up to a metre long and are far more decorative than they used to be. “High end finishes in marble, slate and limestone are increasingly popular, helping to create some dazzling bathrooms.” Steve is also a specialist in the installation of wet rooms, which are also growing in popularity. “They are obviously a favourite with the elderly who find it difficult to get in and out of the bath. Non-slip flooring is readily available now for even greater peace of mind.” Steve was born and brought up in Plymouth and spent 15 years as an engineer in the Merchant Navy before moving into the world of bathrooms and tiling. He worked as a ceramic tiler for a Plymouth company for a time and then spent three years with a master tiler who had worked extensively on London Underground. “I did a lot of high-end tiling work in London and also in Europe, before coming back to Plymouth to work in the residential sector.” Steve then spent more than two decades in the north of England running a tiling company, but returned to his home

town again in 2006 to offer tiling and bathroom installation services to homeowners. “The housing market had just peaked and we were about to enter the recession, so it was hard work at first reestablishing my business here.” Steve gradually built up his workload with property developers and homeowners alike and soon found that he was being recommended to other customers. He works closely with a master plumber and other specialists such as electricians and plasterers and offers an expert service at very competitive prices. “We don’t charge VAT and don’t ask for deposits or upfront payments from our customers,” he said. “I work closely with my trade colleagues to ensure everything runs smoothly - and we only expect to be paid when the customer is completely satisfied with the finished installation.” One satisfied customer is Jo Widdicombe of Stoke, who called in Steve and the team last year to install a stunning new bathroom. “I used to design bathrooms about 10 years ago,” said Jo, “so I had a very good idea of what I wanted. Steve was recommended to me by a tile company in Plympton and I’m so pleased with the finished result.” Jo wanted a P-shaped bath, mosaic tile features on the walls, marble tiles on the floor, complete with underfloor heating and LED lighting in the ceiling. “I was definitely what you would call a fussy customer,” said Jo. “But Steve and the team took it all in their stride.” Now visitors to Jo’s home want to spend more time in the bathroom than the kitchen or lounge! “I couldn’t be happier,” she said. “I thoroughly recommend Steve and the team.”

LEGAL MATTERS

Scandal of up to 40,000 deaths each year which could be avoided By Barry Bayley Medical Negligence Specialist at Wolferstans Solicitors, Plymouth In launching the Department of Health consultation into a proposed Medical Innovation Bill Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “We want to make sure doctors are not held back if they want to use pioneering treatments to offer a lifeline to dying patients. “Innovation has always been at the heart of the NHS and is essential for improving treatments and finding new cures.” It will be interesting to see whether the Bill progresses and this will be the subject of a further article, but there is a concern that, in focussing on innovation, the medical profession cannot see the wood for the trees, and is failing to provide basic, essential life-saving care. A recent study by NHS Improving Quality concluded that between 15,000 and 40,000 patients in England die needlessly every year from Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), commonly as a result of severe dehydration. This death rate is eight times higher than MRSA at its peak. Co-author Professor Donal O’Donoghue, a kidney specialist in Salford said: “We know that at least a thousand people a month are dying in hospital from acute kidney injury due to poor care. These deaths are avoidable. This is completely unacceptable. Good basic care would save these lives and save millions of pounds for the NHS. Doctors and nurses need to make elementary checks to prevent AKI. “In general, people who are having surgery shouldn’t be asked to go without water for longer than 2 hours.” A 2009 report found that only around 50% of AKI patients received good care and identified significant delays in the recognition of AKI. As many as one in five people admitted to hospital as an emergency suffer from AKI. Elderly patients are particularly vulnerable, as are those with diabetes and infections. Simple procedures such as ensuring sufficient drinking water is readily available could make a massive difference. We remember the horror stories uncovered by the Francis Report into the Mid-Staffordshire Trust, such as elderly patients drinking from flower vases because they were so thirsty. This cannot be allowed to continue. We know that many elderly people in particular do not like to make a fuss, and don’t want to be a bother to the hardpressed doctors and nurses, but if they become dehydrated and weak, they may become less able to even ask for a drink. It is important that we look out for our family and friends who are in hospital, and ensure that this most basic of needs is provided. It is a scandal that in 2014 there are still 30 people a day Presented by Kerry Cole who are dying needlessly. We are fortunate in this country to have some of the world’s leading doctors who operate at the Tuesday 6pm - 7pm • Wednesday 7pm - 8pm cutting edge of medicine, but as I tell the young basketball Thursday 12pm - 1pm • Friday 12pm - 1pm players I coach, fundamental skills are essential.

DENTAL MATTERS With two more recently opened clinics in the South West of England, Beautiful Smiles Denture Clinic is helping to put a smile on its clients’ faces. John Bensalhia talks to clinical dental technician, Nick Rush to find out more...

There’s an old saying that goes ‘When you smile, the whole world smiles with you.’ It’s a phrase that will strike a chord with the clients at Beautiful Smiles Denture Clinic, which provides the very best in natural dentures. At the heart of Beautiful Smiles is clinical dental technician, Nick Rush. Having joined Launceston’s Castle Rise dental practice in 2008 – the first qualified clinical dental technician to work in Cornwall – Nick now not only operates at Launceston but in Exeter and the recently opened Plymouth clinic. “I started off as a dental technician and worked as a dental technician for 30 years,” explained Nick. “Beautiful Smiles was the first of its kind to open in Cornwall when it launched in 2007. “I saw a gap in the market and used it to address a major patient complaint which is that their dentures were sent off to be made in a laboratory by a technician they had never met. “What I do is to see my patients in the clinic and also take them through the laboratory stages.” A key advantage with Beautiful Smiles is that it offers a personal service that’s tailor-made to each client’s requirements. “Dentures have changed in the past few years,” explained Nick. “It’s because the industry has woken up to the fact that we have a growing ageing population. “Today, about 14 million people wear dentures. Beautiful smiles - thanks to denture expert Nick Rush the elderly but a wide range from people in their early 20s to people in their 90s. “The appearance of dentures has moved on too. Before, dentures tended to be white, small and artificial looking. It was very much a case of ‘one size fits all’ in the appearance. Now, teeth can be made to look more realistic. Modern denture teeth can be made from materials which replicate the natural enamel so that the end results look more real. “What I do is to ask the patient if he or she has a photo showing their original teeth. Using that, we can then shape the patient’s dentures and make them to those specific requirements.” One of the main strengths of the dentures is the use of implants. “As few as two implants on a lower denture can make a difference,” explained Nick. “A massive change to the denture wearers lifestyle is possible by the use of implants to stop your dentures moving. “One of the biggest problems with lower dentures is the sideways movement. In the lower set of dentures, the two implants hold the teeth in place. If you have an upper denture, using implants can give you the roof of your mouth back, a denture clipped in does not need plastic running over the roof of the mouth, this means you can taste your food again and never need to use messy fixatives.” With the huge success of the Launceston practice, Beautiful Smiles has spent the last two years expanding. The Exeter branch opened in October 2013, while February 2014 saw the opening of another branch at Armada Dental

Practice, in St Judes. “There was a gap in the market for this kind of service in Plymouth, it was something that it had not had before,” said Nick. “Looking ahead, I anticipate a fast growing business because of the size of the area. “However, there won’t be any further expansion. I’m at a level where I can see all the patients at all stages and oversee all the work,” he added. “All three clinics offer a bespoke service and is the same for all clients. The advantage is if patients need remedial work, it can be carried out on site.” The main aim of the future is to develop all three clinics and to continue to provide the best in patient denture care. For Nick, the most rewarding aspect is to see the journey that the patients experience during the process. “Initial consultations can see some people literally come in with their hands over their mouths. Initially, some of the patients can feel very self conscious about their appearance, especially if they have had unsuccessful treatments in the past. “When we fit the new dentures, it makes an enormous difference to their self confidence. They become new people and with their new, uninhibited smile, they get a sense of renewed self confidence. It’s wonderful to see that journey.”

Wisteria Amethyst Falls. This little beauty arrived in the garden centre recently. It’s is a really pretty richly flowering new variety and uniquely it has two flowering periods – early spring until early summer and then again in late summer. Its grows compactly and at a casual pace so is great for a large pot and obelisk on the patio as an alternative to the garden. It likes full sun and needs plenty of water and food! Check it Wisteria Amethyst Falls out it really is lovely! Iris – I love these lovely elegant flowers. They are standing tall on the bench at the garden centre and just look amazing! We have a lovely collection of Iris ‘Tropic Night’ , ‘Party Dress’, ‘Action Front’ which is unusual and distinctive with copper bronze flowers standing on a fan of sword shaped leaves. ‘Blue Shimmer’ has deep lavender blue flowers which fade to pure white at the centre of each petal. They will all grow to about 90cm high and like well drained soil in a sunny position.

Proven pot or hanging basket winner...Bermuda Sky

They grow best in neutral soils. Introducing the perhaps weird but wonderful and almost fake looking Helichrysum ‘Ruby Clusters’. We have sold a number of these already. Red buds open into pale red, fading to oatmeal coloured flowers above attractive silver grey foliage. It’s very different and we have teamed it with other shrubs such as Black Phormiums and Silver Astellas for a silvery, black and red look! A top tip my Dad gave me the other day is that if you don’t have much time for watering and maintenance always choose plants and shrubs with silver or grey foliage as they will tolerate dry conditions better. On that note Lavenders are looking lovely at the moment and they smell so good! There are such a variety these days you can go on collecting new ones forever! They are great in pots or in a border. Team them with pink, teal and light purple pots for a lovely look! So keep watering, keep feeding and slugs oh I wish I knew! They don’t like begonias, geraniums or fuchsias if that helps!! Standard Fuchsias are looking great at the moment, full of flowers! To mark the Plymouth Magazine’s recent tenth anniversary please see the 10% Discount Voucher for Plymouth Magazine Readers.
