It’s been a fantastic summer so far in Plymouth - in between the thunderstorms! MTV Crashes Plymouth proved to be a huge success on The Hoe, with over 20,000 fans enjoying performances by The Kaiser Chiefs, Example, The 1975 and other top acts. It was so successful that a similar spectacular musical event may well be staged on an annual basis. Talks are under way, according to one report. The event confirmed just how valuable The Hoe and Plymouth Sound are as assets to the city. In August it will be the setting for the British Fireworks Championships when up to 100,000 people will be heading for the biggest and best free show of the year. At the end of the same week in August Plymouth again hosts the popular Flavour Fest, which is firmly established as one of the leading food and drink festivals of its kind in the South West. Dozens of stalls will be brimming with local produce, food and drink, while on the main stage top local chefs will be demonstrating their skills in a ‘Ready, Steady Cook’ style show which grows in popularity year on year. We have a special feature on the Flavour Fest on our centre pages and you can also find out more at Destination Plymouth’s website www.visitplymouth.co.uk August also sees the MegaRide returning to The Hoe with thousands of bikers riding out from Lee Mill into the city centre to raise money for charity. Now in its 20th year, MegaRide has grown from humble beginnings to become of the biggest charity ride outs in the UK. As if all that wasn’t enough Plymouth will in September be hosting the Ocean City Festival, with 20 days of activities, including a Seafood Festival, which is getting bigger and better every year. Again, we have details in this issue. Happy reading!

FASHION MATTERS

Chi-Chi Nwuba was earlier this year voted the Face of Africa Fashion Week London and will be representing the event between August 7 and 9 at various press conferences and photo-shoots - as well as appearing on the catwalk as a model. Chi-Chi , who studied dentistry at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, was voted as the Face of Africa Fashion Week London in a poll which attracted thousands of votes from all over the world. “I worked as a volunteer in the event’s press office last year and loved it,” said Chi-Chi . “So when the competition for the Face of Africa Fashion Week London was launched in March I decided to enter - never expecting to win.” Originally from Nigeria, Chi-Chi moved to the UK with her family as a child and came to study in Plymouth four years ago. “I loved my time in Plymouth,” she said, “and made lots of friends - especially from the River Church which I attended during my time in the city.” Chi-Chi now lives in Kent, but returned to Plymouth in July for her graduation ceremony. Alongside her career as a dentist she wants to help promote fashion designers from Africa.

Salon with the X factor Plymouth’s newest hair and beauty salon has opened in the city. Salon X is run by Rosie Finnigan, who has worked at top salons in London and Sydney after her initial training at a popular Devon salon on the outskirts of Plymouth. Rosie, 27, has overseen the transformation of premises in North Down Road, Beacon Park into a luxurious salon featuring a large hairdressing area with six stations on the ground floor and beauty treatment and spray tanning rooms on the first floor. Before opening Salon X Rosie had worked locally as a freelance hair stylist and make-up artist, specialising in bridal hair styling and wedding make up. Rosie has recruited a team of hair stylists, beauticians and nail technicians for Salon X and aims to create a reputation in the city for top quality hair and beauty treatment. Rosie, who grew up in Tavistock, trained in Devon before moving to Covent Garden where she gained extensive creative training in all areas of hairdressing. “I gained a lot of experience in session styling and learning how to cut hair well,” said Rosie. Two years later she moved to Australia where she worked at a bespoke boutique salon in

one of Sydney’s most fashionable streets. While working there she gained a big clientele and travelled extensively in Australia doing cutting and colouring seminars for the leading brand, Hair Care Australia. Rosie then spent a year at the Australian College of Make Up and Special Effects, perfecting her make up skills. The full time course gave Rosie kills in many different make up techniques, including fashion, bridal, beauty, TV, film and special effects. “I was privileged to be taught by some of the best in the business and gained the ultimate first hand experience by working on the set of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo Dicaprio,” said Rosie. After several years away from England, Rosie returned to her Devon roots and moved to Plympton. Her new venture is being backed by businessman Paul Kennedy, who recently arrived in the UK after many years in Dubai. Rosie knew Paul as a customer and he could see the potential she had to create an outstanding hair and beauty business. Paul, who is a successful entrepreneur, recognised that there was a niche for an upmarket hair and beauty salon in Rosie using her make-up and styling skills Plymouth.
WOMEN AT WORK Rosie said: “We looked at lots of premises, but decided that the site in North Down Road offered us the opportunity to create a luxurious ambiance with top quality furnishings and talented and enthusiastic staff. It’s conveniently located in a quiet part of the city with plenty of free parking. “I decided on the name Salon X because it will certainly offer the X-factor..that something extra for men and women who want to look and feel their best.” Salon X will be a flagship salon for Redken, one of the world’s top hair care brands. “Our flagship status means that our stylists will not only receive one-to-one tutorials, but also attend the Redken academy in London. “We aim to create a fantastic working environment with a dedicated and creative team of stylists and beauticians who will deliver outstanding results for our customers,” said Rosie.

Business booming at Amica Bridal Boutique Two friends are celebrating the success of their bridal boutique business in Plymouth after an excellent first year’s trading. Amy Bellamy and Amanda Kirk took the plunge to launch Amica Bridal Boutique in spacious premises alongside the Sainsbury’s store in Marsh Mills on August 1 last year. The pair gave up the security of well-paid posts at Plymouth University to set up the business - and have absolutely no regrets. “The first year has exceeded all our expectations,” said Amy. “It’s been a steep learning curve and there have been ups and downs along the way. But we are delighted with the way the business has been received.” Amanda said: “We have had so much positive feedback from customers not only about the quality of the dresses we sell, but also the service we offer. It’s been really fantastic. “We feel we have established a positive reputation in the market place and this has led to lots of business through personal recommendation.” They not only extended the range of dresses and accessories available, but also created a totally new Pamper Room offering hair, nail, make-up and beauty treatments for not only the bride, but also family and friends. The pair originally met at Plymouth University where Amy was social media manager and Amanda was a recruitment officer responsible for organising major events. The two colleagues had, for a number of years, run Amica Hair and Beauty as a ‘hobby’ at weekends and in the evenings. Amy had qualified as a hairdresser while off work on maternity leave while Amanda gained qualifications as a beauty therapist prior to joining the university staff. They specialised in hair and make up for brides and became

increasingly interested in the wedding market as a result. When the former business at the Marsh Mills showroom ‘A Day to Remember’ became available they took the plunge and secured financial backing from their bank to launch Amica Bridal Boutique. Two major developments in the first year have further strengthened the position of the business. In January they launched a range of prom dresses from the award-winning British company Ruby Prom and have also become the only Premier stockist in the UK for the leading bridal
wear company Ronald Joyce and Victoria Jane. “Offering prom dresses, along with the full hair and beauty make-over has proved massively popular,” said Amy. “The girls often arrange for their limo to pick them up from the showroom here, which makes it very special for us.” Amanda added: “The Ronald Joyce and Victoria Jane range is hugely popular and offer top quality wedding dresses at affordable prices.” The range also includes bridal gowns from Alfred Angelo, Disney Fairytale, D’Zage and Mor Lee. They have also added accessories such as shoes, bags, jewellery and umbrellas. Amica Bridal Boutique also stock a wide range of bridesmaid’s dresses and flower girl dresses for the younger children. Business has been so good in the first year that they have recruited additional staff. Sales manager Jane Lloyd and seamstress Jean Mullis, who worked for the previous business, have been joined by fitter Michelle Bullock, a second seamstress Anne Preston and weekend girl Chloe Wooding. “We could not have achieved the success of the last year without the brilliant staff we have got. They are so dedicated and enthusiastic,” said Amy. “Our aim is to provide the very best customer service possible. We want to make the experience of choosing a wedding dress a happy and memorable one, not only for the bride herself but also family and friends. “Most brides will bring their mums with them to help choose the dress, but mums can often feel a little left out of everything - and they’re frequently the ones paying the bill,” she added. “With our special Pamper Room, mums won’t be left out. They can have their hair or nails done while they are waiting or even a massage and some aromatherapy.”

Drawn to the Valley is a group of artists who all work in or around the Tamar Valley. Some of these artists use the Tamar as a source of inspiration – some use the surrounding landscape, and others just happen to be based there. With well over one hundred artists in the fold, the variety of art and craft that is produced by this collective is truly spectacular. For the group as a whole, there are many opportunities throughout the year to showcase their work. This includes an annual exhibition held in Tavistock. When it comes to Plymouth the number of participating artists has grown considerably in the last couple of years. So much so, that the members have formed their own branch of Drawn to the Valley – The Plymouth Arts Trail. I caught up with one of these Plymouth artists, Jan Brewerton, and she told me, ‘Every summer ‘Drawn to the Valley’ hold an event called ‘Open Studio’. As an organisation we produce a high quality directory which informs potential visitors of all the artists scattered throughout the Tamar valley. ‘Open Studio’ is an invitation for anyone interested in art to go on a trail of the studios, homes and galleries of these artists. ‘ Jan told me that a comprehensive map is produced with the directory so visitors can see clearly where their favourite artists live and work. These directories are well distributed throughout the city at the Art College, the Art Centre, Royal William Yard and at various restaurants and cultural sites. (A PDF is also downloadable on the Drawn to the Valley website.) This year the ‘Open Studio’ event runs from August 23 to August 31. As part of this specially extended week, three Plymouth artists have teamed up to show their work together. Jan Brewerton, Rita Smith and John Pollex will be exhibiting pieces which display a complimentary subject matter. Using paint, print and ceramics, their work portrays and reflects domesticity. Their art will be set up at Rita’s studio in Stoke. When I asked Jan about her pieces she explained, ‘I got into print making, having spent several years teaching it in
ART MATTERS Secondary School. In the past year the printing has really taken off. The images I produce are nostalgic and feature vintage objects and artefacts found around the home. ’ One of Jan’s prints shows several pairs of shoes lined up in a row. She commented: “This print reminds me of growing up as a child Rita Smith in her Stoke studio in my family home. My father would always polish the household’s shoes and then line them up neatly in a row ready for us to wear in the morning. The picture very much reflects the values I grew up with.” I asked Rita Smith what she felt about the summer exhibition. She said: “I really look forward to having ‘Open Studios,’ as everybody is welcome to visit and chat to the artists about their work. There will be art for sale, but it’s quite alright to just come to look around, with no pressure to buy. I get inspiration to paint all kinds of subjects in oils, watercolour and pastel, so I will show a mix, including still life and abstracts.” Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to interview John Pollex but you can take a look at his work on his website www. johnpollex.co.uk

Plymouth has been buzzing in the last few weeks with several major events which have brought literally tens of thousands of visitors to the city. Here at the Duke of Cornwall we have seen huge demand for accommodation during June and July - and this is set to continue into August and September. I know that other hoteliers are reporting a similar picture. It all started with Armed Forces Day, followed by the hugely successful MTV Crash and the Royal Marines 350th celebrations at Brickfields. At the same time Christian broadcasters God TV hosted a summer celebration at the Pavilions which attracted an estimated 2,000 people a night during the three day event. People travelled from all over the world for this event, many from America. For many of them it was their first visit to the city which means so much to America because of the Pilgrim Fathers and the sailing of the Mayflower in 2020. We’re now looking forward to the British Fireworks Championships in August which always attracts tens of thousands of people over the two night event. The same week we have Flavour Fest, followed in September by the University of Plymouth graduation ceremonies on the Hoe and the 20-day Plymouth Ocean City Festival. Not forgetting the Shackleton 100 celebration, organised by the Devon & Cornwall Polar Society, which we are hosting here at the Duke of Cornwall on August 7 and 8. It all adds up to good news for us and the rest of the leisure and hospitality sector in Plymouth, which is such a vital contributor to the city’s economy. We’re also looking forward with much anticipation to the delivery of our 150th Anniversary brochure, which will be available from August 4. We took the opportunity recently to meet up with historian Chris Robinson, who compiled the various chapters tracking the history of the hotel. He was pleased to cast his eye over the final proofs and we’re extremely grateful for all his help in its preparation. Chris has been a regular at the hotel since his childhood when the hotel was run by Leslie McDermott Brown, father of one of his best friends. Chris told me: “I love the Duke of Cornwall and was delighted to be involved in helping in the production of the anniversary brochure. It is such an important landmark building in the city.” Copies of the 56-page brochure are available for £9.95.

with City College Plymouth, having been a member of its Employer Endorsement Scheme since its creation in 2009. Since then we have enjoyed a great working relationship with the College which consistently provides students who are work ready. As you can imagine, it was particularly pleasing that the Duke of Cornwall received the top award at the college’s inaugural annual business dinner and celebration. Eight special awards were presented to key employers in the city and we were delighted to be named as the Employer Endorser of the Year, in recognition of the commitment we have made to working with the college and helping with its curriculum development. It’s an excellent example of how the business sector and education providers can work together to benefit the young student population of Plymouth.

Boil the beans in salted water for 3 to 5 minutes until tender, then mash roughly with a fork. Finely zest the lemon, then squeeze the juice of one half into the beans. Stir in 4 tablespoons of olive oil, the lemon zest, parmesan, mint and chilli. Season with salt and pepper to taste (you may want a little more lemon juice too). Passion for all things retro at city’s newest eatery
FOOD MATTERS
Tracy Holland of Holland’s Retro Diner and Bar
Plymouth’s West End is celebrating the opening of an all American-themed diner and bar offering great food, live music and a unique dining experience. Holland’s Retro Diner and Bar in Frankfort Gate was launched in June by local couple Chris and Tracy Holland and already has a regular following of customers - many attracted by their extensive gluten free menu. The couple met through their passion for all things retro and had been looking for premises to open an eatery for more than a year. It’s a real family business as Tracy’s daughter Elise and Chris’s son Matt both work in the diner. “We have also taken
on four apprentices and three staff working in the kitchen, along with Chris.” Tracy, who has spent the last 10 years working in the hospitality sector, said: “Originally we wanted to open a roadside diner, but we couldn’t find anything that fitted the bill within our budget. We looked at literally scores of properties, even as far afield as Okehampton. “We then focused on Plymouth itself and when we found the site in Frankfort Gate we were impressed with the potential of the double-fronted premises. “It was a real leap in to the unknown, but we took on the

lease and then it was a question of totally refurbishing the premises to turn them into an authentic American-style diner. “Apart from the electrics, gas and plastering, Chris did most of the work himself, including building partitions, making all the tables and the seating for the booths, laying flooring and installing a new kitchen,” said Tracy. “We all helped out wherever we could and in the end it was a real team effort to create the authentic American atmosphere. “A great local company Dave Hollands Upholstery recovered all the bench seating and chairs in our pink, white and blue livery.” The couple travelled to Camden Market and other locations in London to source a host of retro artefacts - including an amazing Wurlitzer juke box. Now complete with a huge selection of popular music from the 50s and 60s it creates a great atmosphere in the restaurant. A lot of other items - include a dodgem car - came from Chris’s own collection. Tracy said: “It’s still very much a work in progress and we will add more items as we find them.” Having taken on the lease in March they managed to complete the work and opened at the beginning of June - just a week later than originally scheduled. As expected the menu at Holland’s Retro Diner and Bar features American-sized portions with an excellent variety of home-made burger dishes, ribs, steaks and chicken dishes. Top of the list is the giant New York, New York - certainly not for the faint hearted. With three 8 oz burgers, two rashers of bacon, two eggs, melted cheese and peppered mushrooms (plus fries, of course) it has become a Facebook challenge to down the monster in the quickest time. A Royal Marine holds the current record of 17 minutes!

Milk shakes made with ice cream and a selection of fruit, cream or biscuits are extremely popular - and are now also available to take-away. Weekday opening is currently Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 8pm, Saturdays till late and Sundays from 11am to 8pm. There’s live music once a month featuring local rock and roll and rockabilly bands with plans to increase music nights to fortnightly and eventually weekly. During Flavour Fest from August 15 to 17 Holland’s will have two marquees in Frankfort Gate - one offering tasty food and the other music from local bands, including an Elvis sound-a-like. Tracy said: “The West End of the city has great untapped potential and we hope we can bring some buzz and excitement to the area. Stefan Krause, the City Centre manager, has been really helpful and is delighted with what we are doing. “We have seen business increasing week by week, with a growing number of regulars. We now have a reputation for good food at affordable prices and our gluten free range is definitely proving a success. “We have family members who are coeliac and appreciate how the choice when eating out is so limited for people who are allergic to gluten. Maggie Reeday who is appearing at Plymouth Jazz Club on Sept 7
Sporting soprano Laura guests at Paul Potts Pavilions concert Earlier this year, 23-year-old mezzo soprano Laura Wright - one of the biggest selling classical artists in the UK this decade – stopped halfway round her London Marathon run to sing Jerusalem on Tower Bridge. Laura is the first to have taken on this remarkable feat of music and sports fusion, and it was to coincide with the release of her stunning EP The Sound of Strength, in June. The title is apt; not only does Laura boast a pure soprano voice that has seen her sing to the Queen, at major sporting events such as Six Nations, and open for Andrea Bocelli, but she can also lift 130kg. The concept behind the EP is the body as the ultimate instrument. There are plenty of similarities between athletes and classically trained singers – the need for dedication, being healthy and being prepared to challenge yourself. She has taken this desire to always challenge herself as an inspiration for the EP. She will be appearing at Plymouth Pavilions on October 29 as a special guest at the Paul Potts concert. With dates in the USA and appearances across Europe throughout the summer, Frank will be heading for the picturesque fishing port of Looe in East Cornwall at the end of his 2014 world tour to hit the main stage this September. As Frank would say… ‘sleep is for the weak’! One of the best late summer festivals, the three-day event boasts an impressive main stage right on the beach and music on every corner of the beautiful town’s quirky cobbled streets. Festival goers can expect the cultural smash of Glastonbury and the crazy community feel of a village fayre. Visitors don’t have to camp unless they want to, with a range of local hotel and holiday cottage accommodation on offer, as well as a natural bounty of fresh Cornish food and drink to enjoy in Looe’s cafes and restaurants. The weekend of September 19 to 21 will see 90 bands from all genres belting out from stages and set-ups all over the town. Squeeze are already confirmed as Saturday night headliner, as are acid jazz and funk pioneers the Brand New Heavies. They will be joined by rock-grass hillbillies Hayseed Dixie, Scottish bag-rock band Red Hot Chilli Pipers, The Selecter and The Lambrettas as well as bands and collectives from all over Cornwall, the UK and the world. Event director and trustee Tanya Brittain said: “ ‘If you asked me how I felt about securing Frank Turner as the Sunday headliner I would say four simple words: ‘I want to dance’! “We’re ridiculously excited about having Frank in the lineup this year and think he will complement the other acts brilliantly bringing another dimension to our already eclectic festival roster.” Tanya continued: “Looe Music Festival is not one to be pigeon-holed into different genres or fall into the trap of being repetitive. It’s about listening to inspiring music artists whilst having a damn good time in a unique and magical location. From the main stage set right on the beach to the tiny acoustic gatherings within the town’s pubs and on the streets, the buzz is tremendous … I can’t think of a better way to chill out and celebrate the end of summer”.

Sponsored by Ocean BMW Plymouth the Festival runs from September 8 to September 28. The spectacular twentyday festival of fun will include over 30 events celebrating everything that makes Plymouth’s waterfront location – and its relationship with the sea – so special. Garry Parker, general manager of Ocean BMW Plymouth, said: “Ocean are dedicated to working with the City of Plymouth and as such are proud to be supporting the festival this year, we will be attending several of the events and am sure it will be a success for all involved” The festival is designed to appeal to all ages, offering a variety including seafood, aquatic activities, marine conservation, education, marine science, an international film festival plus hands on family fun. The festival also has a business side, which focuses on Plymouth’s diverse marine companies and expertise. Leader of Plymouth City Council, Tudor Evans, said: “Plymouth is fast becoming one of the finest waterfront cities in the world. Not only have we attracted well-known sailing events to our harbour we are also the first city in the world to obtain the Fish2Fork Blue City status, with the majority of our city’s restaurants now demonstrating excellent sustainable seafood practices. “As Britain’s Ocean City it is very fitting to have Ocean BMW as the festival’s main sponsor. It is great to have them on board this year. Sponsorship is extremely important, especially with cuts to our funding, and enables us to continue to deliver excellent events in our city for everyone to enjoy.” Ocean City Festival is organised by Plymouth City Council and delivered in partnership with Plymouth University, the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a number of other organisations.

WHAT’S ON A Barbican art gallery is launching a new range of greetings cards by Plymouth artists Debby Mason and Jan Brewerton. 45 Southside Gallery launches the new range on August 2 and all are welcome to meet Jan Brewerton and Debby Mason at the event from 3pm to 6pm. 45 Southside started publishing a range of images taken from original poetry tiles by Iris Milward in 2012. What started small with 16 images has grown very rapidly into a successful greeting card publishing business with over 100 stockists and 42 images across three ranges now available. Debby Mason has been a printmaker for over 25 years, specialising in hand-coloured etchings of sealife and other animals. Her cards feature intricate drawings of seahorses, fish, chickens, hares and even a Dodo. “My recent work concentrates on my love of the sea and the amazing life it contains. As a qualified diver, I feel privileged to be able to come face to face with the subjects that I draw. Etching is the perfect medium for many underwater creatures with its fineness of the line and the ability to fend itself to the meticulous detail that attracts me to them as subjects.” Jan Brewerton is a painter, printmaker, designer, maker: an artist working within and across a diverse range of visual media. Jan’s work has its foundations in domesticity; in its details, its memories and its rituals. They employed a wide range of techniques, and their work represents one of the most creative and diverse periods of printmaking in the history of western art. Drawn from the V&A’s collections of prints, posters and artists’ books, ‘Modern Masters’ showcases their work in print.

It will also look at the impact of the war on local people’s lives – touching on recruitment, conscription, the fighting, the cost, the aftermath and the ‘home front’. MORTGAGE MATTERS
At the end of April the mortgage landscape changed dramatically due to the Mortgage Market Review (MMR). Paul Northmore, managing director of Manning and Company Independent Financial Advisers, explains what to expect now, and how to prepare for a mortgage or remortgage application.
Important ways to avoid the mortgage minefield Since the Mortgage Market Review, mortgage lenders must now scrutinise mortgage applications much more closely to check the borrower can afford the repayments, both now and in the future should mortgage interest rates rise.

If your mortgage is likely to extend beyond your state retirement age or state pension age, the lender will require details of how you intend to continue to meet the repayments – for example, From our perspective as advisers, we’ve seen a number of evidence of pension income. Talented quartet making their mark in the world of digital creativity Four talented graduates who first met on a degree course at Plymouth University are celebrating their second year in business. The quartet were all studying digital art and technology and first worked together as a team on projects which formed part of the degree programme. It was while working on one module called ‘venture culture’ that they realised their combined creative talent had real business prospects. This was reinforced when the four won a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition to secure rent-free accommodation at Plymouth University’s Formation Zone. The four - Gavin Jones, Becky Veater, Paul Bird and Christian Cook - took the plunge and launched their digital design business Elixel in June 2012. The company name is a

combination of the words ‘elixir’ and ‘pixel’. They quickly outgrew the accommodation at the Formation Zone and at the end of 2012 relocated to larger premises at New Media House in De La Hay Avenue, Pennycomequick. Managing director Gavin said: “As young, creative thinkers we thrive on the challenge of finding solutions to business, communication and marketing needs. We combine design, technology and innovative skills to create branding, build websites, and develop mobile apps for a wide range of businesses and organisations.” Creative director Paul Bird said: “We are passionate about our work and set out to create websites and branding for customers that we would be proud of.” Technical director Becky added: “With more than half of the population in the UK owning a smartphone, surfing the web is no longer limited to the desk. We develop responsive web solutions that deliver the customer’s message to the hand, lap or lounge by creating one site which suits mobile, tablet and desktop.” Research director Christian heads up Elixel’s mobile app development projects, which are rapidly gaining national recognition. One of their first apps, which was developed for Plymouth University’s Student Union, attracted plenty of interest from other Student Unions and led to the team being commissioned in partnership with iDat and Warwick University to produce an app for Cheltenham Literature Festival last year. It was a real challenge for Elixel as they were given just six weeks to complete development of a mobile app which would normally take at least three months. The round-the-clock effort was worth it as Elixel earlier this year was tasked with producing a similar app for Flux, a major arts and culture festival aimed at young people, taking place during July and August this year in Liverpool. The free-to-download app provided an interactive portal to the Flux Festival, allowing users to view the festival calendar and build their own bespoke schedule. As part of the project Elixel developed a series of Flux Missions which encouraged young people to win ‘FluxBux’ for completing fun activities. During 2013 Elixel received a further major boost when the company fought off competition from other start-up businesses to secure £20,000 of investment capital from business incubators Starter for 10 and the South West Investment Group. The team were helped by Outset Plymouth, which provides free advice for new businesses. Gavin attended

PROPERTY MATTERS
Business booming at leading Plymouth bathroom and kitchen company Jobel A Plymouth bathroom and kitchen company is experiencing a big uplift in business as confidence grows in the property market. Jobel Ltd, who are based in Millbay, have taken on more space and more staff to cope with the extra workload. Owner Mike Freeman said: “We have witnessed a significant uplift in our bathroom business in the last 12 months. We have taken on an extra fitting team and also acquired a building adjacent to our Millbay showroom to give us more space.” The two-storey former printing works had stood empty for several years and has now been leased by Jobel. The 4,000 sq ft ground floor warehouse is being used to stock materials and collate customer orders while the first floor has been converted to provide a shop window overlooking West Hoe Road. “We’ve installed bathroom and kitchen displays which we hope will attract even more business as West Hoe Road is busy both with traffic and pedestrians,” added Mike. “The increased warehouse space means we can stock a huge range of bathroom accessories, tiles and other materials, enabling us to respond rapidly to online orders.” The latest expansion has reinforced Jobel’s position as one

of the biggest and most successful bathroom companies in the South West. “We have not been this busy for many years and are now installing an average of five or six bathrooms every week,” he said. Jobel’s main showroom in Bounds Place, Millbay features one of the most extensive bathroom displays anywhere in the country, let alone the South West. There are more than 20 full bathroom settings with dozens more baths, sinks, shower, bidets and shower units on display. Mike, who has more than 25 years experience in the market, said that bathrooms are becoming more and more sophisticated, with showers and wet rooms growing in popularity. “About eight out of ten bathrooms we install don’t have baths these days as showering is definitely preferred by most of our customers,” said Mike. Technology and gadgets are also playing their part in the increased growth of the business. Touch screen illuminated mirrors, waterproof flat screen TVs, mirrors with built-in remote controlled audio are all featured in the Jobel showroom. Mike said: “People love these type of gadgets and we have already installed a number of showers with built-in flat screen TVs. Everything is so much more sophisticated now, compared with the old days of coloured bathroom suites.”

TRAVEL MATTERS Cruising has become one of the most popular choices of holiday in a very short space of time. It was seen as little as 10 years ago to be a holiday for the wealthy, elderly, or for a special occasion. This has changed dramatically, with many more ships being built. Most are bigger than ever before, with facilities that cater for not only the elite traveller, but also for families and younger couples. In the past I have written about Silversea Cruise Lines, certainly not one of the largest companies, but definitely one aimed towards the luxury market. I have experienced the quality of the service and ship, and can personally endorse it as a superb product. Their All Inclusive 6 Star ships pride themselves on almost a one to one, crew to passenger ratio with every cabin having it’s own butler to service the passenger’s every need. The reason for mentioning them again is that I am pleased to announce on September 3, from 6pm, we are hosting a Silversea Cruise evening at our office in West Park. A sales manager from Silversea will be there to answer any of your questions. He will also have exciting special offers and group departures travelling up until the end of 2015. Here is the exciting part. For those who attend the evening, they will be entered into a prize draw that will give the winners a place on board the Silver Whisper, for lunch, on September 10, in the beautiful bay off the coast of Fowey. This has been especially arranged for Peter Goord Travel and is a wonderful opportunity to experience the quality of Silversea. Places for the evening are limited and can be reserved by either calling me on 01752 364186 or emailing Anthony@ petergoordtravel.co.uk. So if you are looking to cruise, and want to experience one of the best, give me a call.

Luxury cruising with Silversea...
Many clients ask me when is the best time to buy currency for travelling abroad, and what is the easiest way to take it? Well, at this moment Sterling is very strong against most currencies, especially the Dollar and Euro. If you are travelling abroad in the coming months now is a good time to get your currency. Of course, I don’t have a crystal ball and the exchange rate might get even better, but on average anything over $1.60 to the Pound and over €1.20 for the pound is a good time to buy. Traveller’s cheques are very rarely used By Travel now as more and more travellers prefer Expert to use their own credit or debit cards. Be careful though as most cards can charge 2% Anthony Goord or more on transactions abroad. I recommend, before you travel, to check how much your cards charge. Although they are convenient to use you could be spending more than you think. Nationwide and Lloyds banks currently have cards or accounts which have no currency exchange fees. So, if you are travelling abroad for long periods, and spending large amounts, it’s definitely worth looking into changing your credit card or your current account. Recently, another popular way of taking money abroad is by loading a cash card, which can be used anywhere that accepts credit/debit cards. The only issue could be, if you still have monies held on your card on your return to the UK, some can expire and the monies can be lost. Overall, I would recommend you take a mixture of cash and card. Use currency to pay for such things as meals, taxis and tips, and use cards for the more expensive items such as excursions or your hotel bill at the end of your stay. It is always worth shopping around for the best currency deal, but try and do it before you get to the airport as the exchange rate there is rarely favourable. Happy Holidays

FIRST AID MATTERS
How would you cope with a medical emergency? You come home from work and your loved one is clutching their throat, and having difficulty breathing, what do you do? Your neighbour comes to the door with her child, who is bleeding at the wrist, what do you do? Your child picks up the iron, it was cooling, she screams, what do you do? First Aid is defined as the initial response, or first help given, to someone who is injured or is taken suddenly ill, usually at the scene and at the time. Anyone at the scene can give first aid but the more you know the better outcome for the injured/ill person. The aims of first aid are to keep casualties alive, treat their injuries and stop them getting worse, and to hand them over to the medical authorities in the best possible condition in the circumstances. The best way to achieve this is to follow the basic principles of first aid, namely: • Preserve Life • Prevent Worsening • Promote Recovery A first aider, be it for home, in the workplace, or at a
sporting venue, needs to have a great deal of common sense, and have the ability to remain calm in any emergency, it helps to have a caring personality as well. The ability to remain calm in an emergency comes from confidence, and By Mark Mears confidence can be built from having thorough First Aid training. Instructor We will all have come and Advanced across situations like Clinical Sports those mentioned above, but would we all know Therapist what to do? I firmly believe that first aid is a skill that should be taught as part of the school curriculum, it is a life skill that can only benefit everyone. In the workplace employers are expected to have a number of employees trained in Emergency First Aid at Work (a one day course), as well as having a number of people trained in the full three day First Aid at Work course. This is based on the size of the enterprise. Schools, as employers, are expected to have a number of staff trained in first aid. It would seem sensible to have a number of the more senior pupils trained in first aid as they are the people on the scene when an incident happens. There are many providers of first aid courses within the Plymouth area, some of the most well known are St John’s Ambulance, Red Cross, Resus South West, City College, Discovery College, and of course, us, Mark Mears Associates. We currently have four first aid instructors with over 60 years experience between them, we will shortly be joined by three more! Most of the providers above run the same or similar courses and we can run the course at your venue or in our own training room. We cover Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day), First Aid at Work (3 days), Paediatric First Aid (2 days), Sports First Aid (1 and 2 days) CPR and AED (half a day), and Sports Trauma Care 3 days. We also run a Level 3 Education and Training Course (formerly PTLLS) so we can train instructors. We are members of the Association of First Aiders, and all our Instructors are registered and insured through this Association, please view their website www.aofa.org. Come and learn a new life skill, you never know, you may help to save a life!

LEGAL MATTERS
Coping with bereavement Special assistance available from When a loved one passes away, it can be incredibly daunting to know where to start. How do I pay the bills? What are my pension rights? Do I need a grant of probate? Whilst it is not always necessary for a Grant of Probate to be obtained, even with a seemingly simple estate there is a lot of administrative work involved. Very often we are told ‘everything is in joint names, so it should be straightforward’, but the reality is often very different, especially when you are grieving and perhaps your loved one was the one who previously had always dealt with the paperwork side of things. straightforward’, how can you ask for help? A few of the initial steps come naturally, such as registering the death and arranging the funeral, but then with contacting banks, building societies, utility companies, pension providers and dealing with HM Revenue & Customs the task can often be more involved than people originally think. It is in response to this that Wolferstans are launching a new, fixed fee service, to help families and individuals who are faced with just this scenario. Wolferstans’ Bereavement Assistance Service is a fully comprehensive service that ensures that everyone who needs to be told is contacted, and all accounts, utilities bills and pensions are transferred, at a minimum of fuss and in a timely and orderly fashion. At the end, you are left with peace of mind that everything has been put in place clearly to allow you to manage going forward and you are left knowing what assets and liabilities you have - much of the stress at this emotional time can then disappear. Samantha Buckthought, head of the Wills and Trust department at Wolferstans said: “We were increasingly finding bereaved individuals, who were often elderly, who were completely bewildered as to what they had to do, who they had to speak to, and what accounts they had when they had lost a loved one, even though the estates may not have needed a Grant of Probate or had any complexity. “We wanted to cut through that confusion by offering our expertise in an economical way.” Effectively, this is a ‘one stop’ assistance service designed to unburden bereaved families of the complexity that even ‘straightforward’ estates can cause.

BUSINESS MATTERS
Steven makes bathroom dreams Following on from the success of Plymouth-based plumbing and heating business, Shortflow, director Steven Short has recently founded Dream Bathrooms. John Bensalhia reports... When it comes to ‘good old-fashioned customer service’ Steven Short knows this inside out. Following on from the established success of his plumbing and heating business, Shortflow, Steven has recently set up a business that makes bathroom dreams come true. Dream Bathrooms is set to be a big success, and already, in the three months since it was formed, has garnered favourable feedback from its fast-growing customer base. The main vision of Dream Bathrooms is to provide the highest level of customer service. It’s a vision that has already paid off for Shortflow, now in its fifth year, and continuing to deliver the goods to high standards. “We get better and busier each year,” said Steven on Shortflow. “It’s about listening to what the customer wants. We can offer our customers dedicated service and very good prices. That’s why Shortflow has earned a great reputation through word of mouth. “Word gets round through our customers, and so our customer base grows as a result. We have never had any adverse feedback, and in fact, customers have become friends, both through Shortflow and Dream Bathrooms.” Dream Bathrooms is a family-run business that lives up to its title. Because it focuses on each customer’s specific requirements, Dream Bathrooms is able to provide its customers with a dedicated, tailor-made service. “After the customer has contacted us, we will then go to

see them in person,” explained Steven. “They will then tell us their requirements from the things that they like and dislike through to their budgetary requirements.” Dream Bathrooms can offer a wide selection of bathroom solutions from the budget range through to the top end of the market. “Armed with these answers, we can then provide the customer with everything he or she needs such as brochures or samples. We can then design the bathroom around what the customer actually wants as opposed to what they think they want.” Steven gives an example of the quality customer service that Dream Bathrooms provides. “Recently, a lady in a wheelchair wanted access to her bathroom. She had had four or five different quotes from other companies, but we were the only ones to ask whether the wheelchair could actually get into the bathroom. “Originally, it couldn’t, so what we did was to widen the door frame, allowing the customer access. We also had a phone call from a woman who said that we had changed her life, thanks to her beautiful bathroom! That is what we aim for when we deal with our customers – to achieve their dreams.” Dream Bathrooms provides a wide array of services, from part to complete installation. Services include general building tasks such as the removal or construction of walls, new shower enclosures and additional en-suites to existing bedrooms. The company also provides plumbing (for example, installing drains, wastes or shower pumps) and tiling (for example, the removal of old tiles or the installation of electric underfloor heating) services. A big plus point of Dream Bathrooms’ tailor-made service is that customers can work within their own budgets – and with the current economic climate in mind, that’s a massive boon. “We tailor each bathroom solution to the customer’s budget. Everyone wants a new bathroom or kitchen, but price can be an issue. We offer competitive rates and affordable prices for our customers, while also providing high quality products.” Dream Bathrooms is set to follow in the footsteps of the hugely successful Shortflow business. A stylish website has been created for the fledgling business, offering a selection of testimonials and photos of the top-flight end results (the website can be found at www.dreambathroomsltd.co.uk). “I have plans to expand both Shortflow and Dream Bathrooms,” says Steven. “In a year from now, I would like Dream Bathrooms to have its own premises and headquarters which will allow us to showcase our work.” “The future for me personally is that both businesses will go from strength to strength – as long as you put the work and the hours in, business will do well. “What you put in, you get out. We love what we do, we have a thriving customer base and we are confident that our future is very healthy.”

FITNESS MATTERS
World record breaker Matt is an A state-of-the-art fitness suite is proving a popular facility for people living in Plymstock and further afield. Major investment in the Sports Centre at Coombe Dean School last year included a large extension to create the spacious new fitness suite. The suite includes a fleet of brand new Life Fitness machines, including treadmills, exercise bikes and rowing machines, complimented by two new racks of free weights. There was a special celebration at the Sports Centre in July when Plymstock father of four Matt Brewster was presented with a certificate to mark his world record para-rowing achievement. Matt, who suffers from a degenerative bone disease, used one of the fitness suite’s rowing machines to break the record for a 100 kilometre rowing challenge. He started at 8.05am and supported by staff, students and members of his family, completed the final few pulls at 6.24pm in a world record time of 10 hours, 19 minutes and 44 seconds. Matt said: “I came close to giving up at one stage, but
managed to push through the pain barrier and eventually break the world record.” Matt was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis six years ago, but prior to that had been very active and fit, frequently competing in indoor rowing events. He was then told that he also had osteoarthritis and a liver disease. Matt said: “Once it had sunk in that my mobility is going to worsen over the coming years, I decided to see what options in sport there were. “The options for disability sport are somewhat limited, so I decided to firstly attempt the Plymouth Half Marathon in 2010 on crutches, which was tough but I completed in just under four hours. “After a massive telling off for potentially making my health worse from my wife, mum and doctors I opted not to try that again and went into wheelchair road racing. “I decided to combine it into a charity campaign to help two small charities the Batten Disease Family Association and the Huntington’s Disease Association. I have friends and family who are affected by both of these conditions: Batten Disease is especially cruel as it usually affects young children,” said Matt. At the start of the following year Matt decided to take part in eight road races in his wheelchair over the year from 5K to half marathon distance - but by the end of the year he had completed 14 races. Since then Matt has continued with his amazing feats of endurance and returned to

indoor rowing, including competing as an adaptive rower in the Cornish Indoor Rowing Competition. Matt’s inspirational efforts did not go unnoticed and in 2011 he was presented with the Rob Daley Special Trophy at the Herald Sports Awards. His world record breaking indoor rowing effort at the Coombe Dean Sports Centre’s fitness suite is just the latest in a long line of achievements for Matt. He was presented with the official certificate marking the achievement by Ian Hodson, manager of the Sport Centre. Matt’s daughter Caitlin and son Lewis were also on hand for the presentation. Ian said: “It was a remarkable achievement and we are all really proud of Matt. The certificate will have pride of place in the fitness suite.” The Sports Centre and fitness suite are open to the public from 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays. There is no joining fee to use the facility, just a monthly membership fee of £10. The Sports Centre’s facilities also include a four badminton court sports hall, gymnasium with wooden sprung floor, floodlit all-weather outdoor pitch and changing and shower facilities. The Centre hosts a number of clubs, associations and organisations in a variety of sports including badminton, junior football, Tae Kwondo, karate and short mat bowls.

of pink and white. Anemones can also be used in wildlife gardens to attract bees and butterflies. For a sunny spot in free draining soil, Perovskia is a great choice. It is hardy and grows to 1m (3’) in height and spread. It has scented silvery leaves which become smothered in bright blue Salvia like flowers. It is easy to grow and maintenance free and great for attracting wildlife. It looks fantastic when planted amongst brightly coloured Crocosmias, such as Lucifer or Red King and also with Heleniums and Rudbeckias. Hydrangeas are also making a resurgence in popularity, with more and more new varieties being introduced every year. The colour range is expanding with intense vibrant blues to the softer baby blues, as well as pale pinks to the shocking pinks as well as reds and purples. Bi-coloured and double blooms seem to be popular this year as well. The regained popularity of hydrangeas may be to do with there exceptionally long flowering period and ease of care. They are extremely easy to look after. They will grow in sun or shade and will grow in any soil type as long as it is moist. Hydrangeas can grow quite large if left unchecked, upto 3m (10’), but can easily be kept at 1.2m (4’) if pruned hard in the spring. The only thing to bear in mind with Hydrangeas is flower colour, if you want blue flowers, plant in ericaceous soil and feed it with ericaceous food. If you want pink flowers, plant in alkaline soil, and feed it with lime. For white flowers plant it in neutral soil. As we are loving roses at the moment please turn to page 59 to see our advert which has a special reader offer for you on roses. We also welcome you to join us on the Bank Holiday weekend for a fun planting festival at the garden centre with lots of talks and demonstrations on planting particularly autumn planting. All the bulb ranges will be in store from mid August with lots of lovely autumn shrubs to choose from. Happy Gardening....Fiona & Derek. www.cornerstonevision.com
