Keeping the children occupied during the summer is always something of a challenge for families. We’re really fortunate in Plymouth to have a whole range of activities for children of all ages. I’m particularly impressed with the Summer Mix programme which provides literally dozens of free courses offering 3,000 places for children aged from 11 to 19. There are also lots of courses for disabled youngsters up to the age of 25. Despite all the austerity measures, Plymouth City Council Youth Services have not only maintained the Summer Mix programme, but also extended and expanded it. My own children have really benefited from a whole range of courses - some of which run over three or four days. The programme is funded by the City Council in partnership with dozens of local organisations and providers and I would personally like to congratulate all those involved in putting together such a varied and interesting range of courses. In addition to Summer Mix there are a host of events for children and young people at libraries across the city as well as the Wild About Plymouth programme and the Diggin’ It activities at Devonport Park and sporting events at the Life Centre and sports centres across the city. Then there’s the Park Rangers who provide free play activities at a number of parks in Plymouth. Again it’s all free. I find the Parents Guide to Plymouth an invaluable source of information on a whole host of subjects and I recommend it to any busy mum or dad who are looking for inspiration and ideas to amuse the children. Their website can be found at www.parents-guide-to-plymouth.co.uk. Take a look, you’ll be impressed with the advice and information available. Hope you enjoy the latest issue..

BUSINESS MATTERS
The second creation: Nicola Hurst does it again
Emma Morgan pictured at NH2
Eight years after launching her first gallery in Hyde Park in Plymouth, jewellery designer Nicola Hurst has opened an exclusive boutique in the prestigious grounds of the Royal William Yard. Nicola’s second outlet, NH2, opened in July within the new development at Residence 1, overlooking the green, within the former naval victualing yard. Nicola grew up in Plymouth, her grandfather, Sidney Hurst, was a watchmaker and one of the founders of Plymouth Silversmiths back in 1950. Nicola said: “If he were still alive I’m sure my grandfather Sidney would be very proud of the fact that we are carrying on the family business in a city he adopted. Nicola studied jewellery making at Middlesex Polytechnic before moving back to Plymouth and opening her first gallery, Nicola Hurst Designer Jewellery in 2006. Not only does she make and sell her own work – understated sophisticated pieces based on simple lines and shapes – but she also teaches the art of jewellery making in her recently expanded workshop. She explained: “My students range from those with no experience to others with a good knowledge, and in age from early twenties to a lady who has just turned 80. They all share desire to do something creative, challenging and therapeutic in their spare time.” NH2 concentrates on stocking contemporary jewellery made by sought after independent designers, as well as hand forged metalwork, handmade clocks, unique leather handbags and much, much more. Nicola will be dividing her time between the Hyde Park gallery and the Royal William Yard boutique where she will be able to continue to offer a personal relaxed service to her customers. “We sell pieces made in the UK that won’t be found anywhere else in Plymouth and our customer care is second to none,” added Nicola who has built up a strong team of sales representatives over the years and has welcomed Ashley and Emma who will be managing NH2. Ashley is delighted to be facing the challenges of the new store. “I’m really excited to be leading the team at NH2.

More success for jewellery designer Nicola Hurst
I know we have amazing stock from fabulous, renowned makers which I am sure will prove very popular with old and new clients alike.” Nicola is ambitious and if her new venture proves as popular as her first gallery, customers will have their expectations exceeded in terms of quality and choice, and whenever she has any spare time, she’ll be back at her bench creating her own amazing collections. “I love sitting alone, creating unique and beautiful things that people want to buy. I’m so lucky to be able to do what I love to do,” said Nicola.

WOMEN AT WORK Plymouth is a real hotspot - quite literally - for all things vintage and retro. That’s the message from Jo Macaskie who has seen her aptly-named ‘All Things Vintage and Lovely’ fairs go from strength to strength. Now just two years after organising her first fair in Plymouth’s Guildhall Jo is planning a big celebration event in September. Jo said: “When I first started looking at setting up a vintage fair in Plymouth in 2012 - I was told it wouldn’t be a success! It has already been tried and didn’t work at various venues in the city was what I kept hearing.” Jo had already organised successful fairs in her then home town of Torquay and was convinced Plymouth offered great potential. “Not one to be easily swayed I decided I would try and bring vintage to this diverse and buzzing city. After looking at several venues - on entering the Guildhall I knew that was the venue I had to hold the vintage fair in! “It felt spacious and light, had amazing stained glass windows and chandeliers - all tying in with the regal image I wanted for my vintage fair,” she said. “With 65 stalls booked, a tea room sourced and my entertainment in place I was set to go,” said Jo. It was a real step of faith for Jo, but her intuition proved right with 1,200 people visiting the inaugural event at the Guildhall. The next fair attracted 1,500 people and Jo now has a waiting list of traders who want to be part of the success story. Jo had more than 25 years’ retail experience in having run jewellery shops and her own vintage furniture and gift shop. She also designs and makes bespoke bridal jewellery. Since the launch of the Plymouth fairs Jo has been approached by numerous partners to organise several large scale events. She has organised fairs at the Moorland Garden Hotel and a monthly fair at Mount Edgcumbe and now runs fairs in Plymouth in April, September and November.

Vintage fairs so popular thanks to Jo’s She also organises fairs at locations such as Dartington, Taunton and Torquay and expects to run as many as 25 events next year. “Plymouth has definitely embraced these fairs, especially the student population. Plymouth is definitely our flagship venue,” she said. Not content with the success of her vintage fairs, Jo this year launched Miss Ivy’s Journal, a magazine dedicated to all that is vintage and creative in the South West. “The Journal is a concept that grew from a desire to celebrate the varied vintage scene in the South West, of which Miss Ivy’s growing events are a big part,” said Jo. “There are so many interesting stories to tell, unique places to visit and wardrobes to delve into we just felt a magazine bringing all this together would be an interesting project! It’s been a mind boggling journey so far, several months and name changes later – Miss Ivy’s Journal is here! “We wanted the magazine to appeal to those people who frequent Miss Ivy’s various events. Our aim is to support small businesses and offer the reader something unique, interesting and easy to relate to. Our hope is that it will grow
proving in city s vision in the same manner that the events have. It is reader led so do feel free to contact the team with any feedback or articles.” Jo, who now lives in Tavistock is launching a venture in the near future with her partner called Mr Alfie’s Jaunts, giving people a true vintage experience - including a trip in a 1930s Asquith. This busy entrepreneur has lots more creative ideas which she plans to roll out next year. These include a 40s style evening where Jo is working with one of the groups which are involved in the fairs - Mad About Swing. “The idea is in its formative stages at the moment, but I believe an evening event which celebrates the best of the 40s would prove very popular.” In the meantime she is offering people who attend the Plymouth event at the Guildhall on September 27 to win an

Couple who now have no worries about providing for their disabled daughter
Plympton couple David and Janet Halifax have cared for their disabled daughter Emma ever since she was born 34 years ago.
But with both David and Janet now retired and David suffering ongoing health problems, the couple knew they needed to ensure Emma was provided for in the future. David said: “We had been thinking about sorting out our wills for some time, but had never quite got round to it. Then a friend recommended us to David Richardson of Richardsons Legal Services. “He drew up special Wills for both Janet and I with a Disabled Trust in each Will. This ensures that if anything should happen to us, the Disabled Trust will provide funds for Emma which will be administered by the trustees, our older daughter Lisa and her husband Shaun. “The Disabled Trust also has the additional advantage that funds can be released to support Emma, without affecting any state benefits she may be receiving,” he added. Janet said: “David Richardson could not have been more helpful. Nothing was too

much trouble for him. He fully understood our situation, advised us of the best way forward and explained everything very clearly. He also provided us with a fixed price for the work involved, which meant there were no hidden extras.” Frustrated by the lack of activities for adults with learning difficulties, David and Janet launched the All Stars Theatre Group 10 years ago. The group of adults aged between 20 and 60 plus meets regularly
for rehearsals and perform at a variety of events each year, including two special theatre-based shows. They invited David Richardson and his partner Alison to their 10th anniversary show and David was so impressed that Richardsons Legal Services is now sponsoring the All Stars Theatre Group. David Richardson said: “The show was absolutely fantastic. Some of the members of the group have difficulty speaking, yet they danced and sang and told jokes. “The group is a very worthy cause and they have difficulty finding funding, despite the fact they have 200 adults with learning difficulties on their waiting list. I was delighted to offer my support and a share of our profits will now go to the group to help them provide this fantastic service and to continue to put on shows.”

raising flour (Dove’s Farm make a good organic one) √ 75g ground almonds √ 250g grated weight of courgettes For the topping: √ 300g icing sugar √ 1½ tsp finely grated lemon zest √ 30g unsalted butter √ 2 tbsp lemon juice √ 1 tbsp poppy seeds
Preheat your oven to 180˚C. Lightly grease a 23cm springform cake tin and line with baking parchment. Warm the milk, poppy seeds and lemon zest in a small pan for a couple of mins, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale, light and fluffy (an electric hand mixer makes life easier). Beat in the egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in the almond extract, flour and ground almonds. Fold in the courgettes and cooled milk. Whisk the egg whites in a separate clean bowl to stiff peaks. Add a large spoonful to the courgette mixture and stir in, then gently fold in the rest, keeping as much air in the mixture as possible. Pour into the tin. Bake for approx 60 mins, depending on your oven, until firm to the touch; it should spring back when you lightly press the middle. Cool in the tin for 15 mins, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. To make the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Add the lemon zest. Melt the butter and pour over the icing sugar. Add the lemon juice and stir together quickly, adding a splash of cold water if needed, until you have a thick but spreadable icing. Use a pallet knife to spread over the cake. Leave for approx 30 mins if you can, so the icing can set a little, before serving sprinkled with poppy seeds.

Rock Salt is a rock-solid success A family-run restaurant launched less than three years ago has become one of Plymouth’s biggest success stories. Rock Salt Cafe and Brasserie in Stonehouse has quickly become one of the most popular eateries in the city, regularly taking No.1 spot on Trip Advisor. Chef Dave Jenkins and his Australian-born wife Chantel have a string of awards on the way, including a coveted AA Rosette. Unlike some of the bigger name chefs in the city, Dave is a local lad, having been born and bred in Plymouth. He trained at City College and in the 20 years that he has been in catering Dave has established a growing reputation for his culinary expertise. Before launching Rock Salt, Dave worked at some of the top establishments in the South West, including The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Burgh Island and Brown’s Hotel in Tavistock. He and Chantel also ran the well-known fine dining restaurant 22, Mill Street in Chagford before launching Rock Salt in November 2011. With invaluable help from Dave’s parents Steve and Jean

Further plans to grow the Rock Salt business • continued from previous page and members of the family they converted the former Mechanics Arms pub into a stylish eatery. Jean said: “We really didn’t know how well the Rock Salt would be received - but it’s all credit to Dave’s talent that it has proved so popular.” So popular, in fact, that earlier this year the first floor building was converted into a stylish conservatory dining area and function room to cope with the increasing number of customers. It provides a further 40 covers as well as creating a venue for parties, small weddings and other private events. Having initially had limited opening hours Rock Salt is now open seven days a week because of its popularity. Rock Salt is now open from 10am until late seven nights a week, with an 8am opening on Saturdays. “Because of the location in Stonehouse we were unsure if it would be popular for fine dining in the evenings - but almost immediately we opened we started taking evening bookings and now demand is such that we open every evening until late,” said Jean. An attractive all-day menu which includes everything from smoked salmon and scrambled egg, lite bites, sandwiches, omelettes and the ever-popular all-day breakfast, is supplemented by a selection of home-made cakes and muffins and a selection of daily specials. “Customers can enjoy everything from a bacon buttie to a brasserie lunch or dinner,” said Jean. An extensive lunch menu is available with a mouthwatering selection of home-made starters, mains and desserts.

Commemmorative concert raises money for War Child charity A prestigious World War One concert in aid of the charity War Child is taking place in November. Organised by Plymouth-based Jeanie Moore the concert is entitled ‘We Will Remember’ and takes place on Sunday November 23 at 4pm in the Great Hall at Dartington, near Totnes. The charity event will feature the Chamber Ensemble of London, who have given dozens of classical concerts and include some of the country’s finest string players. The Ensemble will perform ‘No Man’s Land’, a new suite for double bass and string orchestra by the West Country composer Clive Jenkins. The work includes readings of English, French, German and Russian poetry from the Great War. The soloist is Chris West co-principal bass player with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and for many years previously the solo double bass player with the Guildhall Strings. He is also professor of double bass at Trinity College of Music, London. He plays on a double bass made by Giovanni Battista Ceruti in Cremona in the 18th century. The work was commissioned by concert organiser Jeanie Moore MVO on behalf of Gard & Co Solicitors as a fundraiser for WAR child. The concert will include works by composers who fought in the war – Vaughan Williams, Hindemith and Kreisler – as well as lighter music from the period with Ivor Novello and Irving Berlin prominently featured. Research by the Ensemble’s director, violinist Peter Fisher, has come up with a salon piece, ‘Angels of Mons’ by Sydney C Baldock. Battlefield, homefront. peace, war and aftermath are all reflected in this very varied programme entitled ‘We Will Remember’.

Sep 13 to Dec 13 WHITEHORSE HILL: A PREHISTORIC DARTMOOR DISCOVERY Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery This fascinating exhibition will see some amazing Bronze Age finds from a remote spot on Dartmoor go on public display for the first time. The finds are around 4,000 years old and were discovered within a stone chest burial (a cist) at Whitehorse Hill. This is the most outstanding site to have been excavated locally in over 100 years. The items that were discovered in the cist are of national and international importance and provide one of the best glimpses into life in Bronze Age Southern England that academics and scientists have ever had. This is a partnership exhibition between Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA). Sep 20 to Dec 13 WALK ON: FROM RICHARD LONG TO JANET CARDIFF 40 YEARS OF ART WALKING This is the first touring exhibition to examine the many varied ways that artists since the 1960s have undertaken the universal act of taking a walk as a means to create new art. ‘Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff – 40 Years of Art Walking’ gives an insight into the recent art practice of nearly 40 artists. Several are internationally acclaimed. Others are bright new talents. All of them have made new work simply by taking a journey on foot. Regardless of the landscape or location, during the last four decades these ‘explorers’ have made their mark. ‘Walk On’ shows that from land art to conceptual art and from street photography to film, much of the important art of our time has been created through an act of walking. This is a partnership exhibition between Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University; Plymouth Arts Centre; Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art.

BUSINESS MATTERS
Jamie’s bathroom business dream is now Plymouth’s newest bathroom and tile business was launched less than six months ago - but it is already making a big impact in the market. Launched in April by Jamie Shewbrook, Westcountry Tile and Bathroom is selling middle to top end bathrooms and tiles from some of Europe’s top manufacturers. Jamie, who has more than 20 years management experience in the plumbing industry, has invested a six figure sum in the new business. The 4,000 sq ft showroom at Christian Mill Business Park in Crownhill has more than 50 bathroom displays, featuring contemporary and traditional styles. Jamie took over the premises at the beginning of the year and then worked flat out over the next three months to establish the stylish and spacious showroom. “I worked seven days a week, often 12 to 15 hours a day to set up the showroom and although it’s a work in progress I’m delighted with the effect that has been created,” said Jamie. “I want to appeal for discerning customers who are looking for affordable luxury, whether they are spending £1,000 or more than £20,000 on their bathroom. They’re likely to be professionals between 30 and 60 who are looking for a bathroom with the wow factor. “We have carefully selected some beautiful exclusive brands of bathrooms and tiles from around the world, including Italy, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain and the UK. We have top brands of pottery, showers, cubicles, brassware, furniture and accessories which rival anything that London or Milan can offer. “We also have a wide range of tile coverings including ceramic, porcelain, slate, travertine, limestone, sandstone,

granite, glass, quartz and composite,” he added. Launching his own business has been an ambition for Jamie for a number of years. “I genuinely believe there is nothing else like this in Plymouth with so many top brands and top quality products.” Jamie certainly knows the plumbing business and has
enjoyed a hugely successful career in the industry. He has worked for leading companies such as Wolseley, Plumb Centre, Plumb Base, Newey & Eyre and British Ceramic Tiles. He was one of the youngest-ever Plumb Centre branch managers, launching the Kingsbridge operation and building it from nothing to a substantial turnover business in two years. He then spent more than three years at the Plympton branch, leading a team of 14 people and doubling the turnover within two years. He was later recruited as an area sales manager overseeing 23 Plumbase branches in four counties with a combined turnover of £45 million. This was followed by a similar post at Newey & Eyre. Jamie than spent nearly five years as design and showroom manager at a leading outlet in Ivybridge, handling projects for a wide range of customers. This was followed by a period as area sales manager for British Ceramic Tile. “I gained a huge amount of business experience in these jobs, which has helped me to develop my own business strategy,” said Jamie, who was born and raised in Plymouth, attending St Boniface’s and City College Plymouth. He has been delighted with the way the business has fared since opening in April. “Business has been really healthy. We’ve only advertised on a limited basis and used social media to promote the new enterprise, but I have been very pleased with the number of customers who have been visiting the showroom. “We have already received a lot of recommendations and referrals from the manufacturers with whom we are working,” he said. These include leading names such as Villeroy & Boch, Duravit, Galassia, Matki, Simpson, Honsgrohe, Crosswater, Schneider and Gerbert. Jamie is handling all bathroom consultation and design for customers and overseeing installation by his specialist teams. “I’m really enjoying handling all aspects of the business. It’s hard work, but very satisfying,” he said. He’s receiving help and support from his mum Sue, who assists with administration and other office duties. His partner Melanie and their two boys have also been a great support as he has been heavily committed to launching the business. When he’s not at work, Jamie enjoys squash, running, cycling and golf. He’s a prolific fund-raiser for charity, raising

If the pain does not settle then a diagnostic ultrasound scan can be used to check the diagnosis and guide further treatment. For resistant cases then either a steroid injection or a new treatment called shockwave therapy can be done.
Although these problems can be seen in tennis and golf, the majority of cases are seen in non-sporting activities and can affect people of all ages and occupations. These problems are usually due to overuse or repetitive strain. This can be seen in various activities such as sport, DIY, manual work and sometimes playing musical instruments. TRAVEL MATTERS
A tale of two holidays
The Canary Islands have always been popular with British travellers due the year-round excellent weather and you can fly locally.

We ended the trip in a resort called Puerto Morgan, or as it’s known locally the ‘Venice of the Canaries’ offering lots of character with most of the restaurants and In the past few years , especially in the winter, the islands bars overlooking the seafront . have suffered with growing competition from other countries Our second day trip was an on and off-road jeep safari especially Egypt along with people travelling further afield to travelling into the centre of the island on dirt tracks and the Caribbean or the Far East. Botanico becomes one of the best hotels in Europe to take your children because the owner of the hotel also owns ‘Loro Parque’ a fabulous wildlife park in the north of the island. During the school holidays the children staying at the hotel are taken to the park on a daily basis not only to see a vast array of animals including tigers, gorillas, dolphins, parrots, chimps and even sharks but to also meet the trainers and get a chance to see up close some of the wildlife. This is a fantastic opportunity By Travel for the children staying at the hotel and Expert comes at no extra charge. Anthony Goord On leaving the hotel it was quite evident that this area has suffered more than most from the tourist downturn with many shops and bars left vacant away from the seafront. On the front though the resort comes alive with a fantastic array of restaurants and bars offering a large choice at prices which I would consider cheaper than most countries I’ve been too. On one of our days we travelled up into the mountains to a local village that had a wine and cheese festival. It was fantastic to be part of a local tradition and feel you were in the real Canaries and not a resort. We even ventured into a local cafe for refreshments, where a carafe of local wine plus was other drinks was less than five euros. We all enjoyed our stay in Puerto De La Cruz, especially in the fabulous Hotel Botanico, and would return at the drop of a hat. I feel though a perfect 14 night holiday would be best to split with a week in the north and a week in the south giving you two holidays in one on this fabulous island. Two very different holidays on different Canary Islands, which one would be my favourite? Strangely enough both for different reasons: Gran Canaria on an all-inclusive with my son and friends was perfect for a family break and excellent value for money. Tenerife on the other hand, quality accommodation and celebrating a very special occasion with a loved one, was a lot more expensive than the week in Gran Canaria but the environment and the overall experience was much better. I would always choose quality over quantity – but don’t want to start a family argument! Happy Holidays www.cornerstonevision.com

FAMILY MATTERS
Let’s talk about stories at Story Talk fun session Mums, dads, grannies, granddads, aunts, uncles, other family members and most importantly, children themselves are invited to a fun and free Story Talk workshop on Saturday September 13. The SPECtacular Story Talk workshop at Waterstones will be led by national reading specialist, Donna Thomson. Children aged three to seven and their families are invited to come along and find out more about how to explore any book in-depth. “Reading should be exciting and the aim of our work is to support children in reading for fun and meaning,” said Ms Thomson. “The way that children learn to read in their early years is so important. Teaching children to read for meaning is a lifelong skill that will help them with their understanding of everything they read and see. “Our SPECtacular Story Talk is a playful structure that helps young children to talk about books and stories, both the words and the images, and explore the pages for meaning.” Donna will be using her interactive bookmark kit with families, which encourages children to Summarise, Predict, Enquire and Clarify (SPEC) about everything they read and see. The workshop takes place in Waterstones in Drake Circus, Plymouth at 11am on Saturday September 13. It will be followed by book signings by children’s authors Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham, who will be signing their picture book ‘The Trail of Crumbs’ that accompanies the SPECtacular Story Talk book kit. The SPECtacular Story Talk workshop is part of the Think2Read programme, which is supported by the National Literacy Trust.

Our recipe this month is for making play dough. It’s a great recipe that I’ve used for years at home and in the classroom. It makes really soft, pliable dough that will last for several months if stored in the fridge. By Liz Children of all ages love using play dough Crudgington and it can become quite costly to buy it of the readymade. This recipe makes a decent Roundabout sized batch but you can vary what you add Day Nursery to it to make different kind of doughs for the children to play with. Different colours and smells are easy to add and you can also add things like glitter. Be careful though. I once added silver stars to black playdough to make a ‘night-time’ dough for my children and the corners of the stars were really sharp so they couldn’t use it! Here’s the recipe: √ √ √ √ √ √
2 cups plain flour 2 cups water 2 tablespoons of oil 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar 1 cup salt Whatever you may want to add: food colouring or scented oils are the easiest things.
Put all the ingredients in a saucepan and mix. Cook slowly until it comes together and becomes firm. Take off the heat and leave to cool. Knead and store in a plastic bag or sealed plastic container. WARNINGS: √ The dough will be very hot when first cooked. Don’t let the children use it until it is cold. √ It may smell a little odd when cooking but it will lose that smell once cooled down. √ It has a lot of salt in it don’t let the children eat it! √ The salt content will make your hands feel a little dry in the first instance but that will wear off.

PROPERTY MATTERS
Big rise in homeowners selling their property Increased confidence among homeowners coupled with more attractive mortgage products has led to a sharp rise in the number of properties coming onto the market in Plymouth. That’s the message from Darren Lawson, managing director of Mansbridge & Balment, one of the city’s leading independent estate agents. “It has been an extremely busy year so far,” said Darren. “Between our By two offices in the city we have seen a 50 per cent increase in the number of Darren Lawson properties that we have listed in 2014 of Mansbridge & compared with the same period last Balment year. “This has undoubtedly helped to ensure that the property market remains relatively well balanced. We are certainly not seeing boom or bust conditions, with modest single-digit rises in property prices across the city as a whole. “We are now experiencing more normal market conditions,

which is a relatively rare scenario. Over the 25 years I have been worked as an estate agent in Plymouth we have tended to see periods of big property price rises, followed by inevitable periods of property price recession. “Compared to that roller-coaster situation, we now appear to be in a period of balance in the market.” Darren said sensibly-priced properties were selling well and advised potential buyers to move quickly if they are attracted to a property. “If buyers see a property which they like at a price they can afford I would advise them to act swiftly. The chances are that if they decide to look at other properties before making a decision, the chances are their preferred choice will have sold already. “There are plenty of eager buyers out there at the moment and it is not unusual to see properties selling within days of coming to the market. We have also experienced properties selling for more than the original asking price because there have been several parties interested.” He said that the Mortgage Market Review introduced in the spring and the Government’s Help to Buy scheme had so far had little impact on the market locally. “There have been recent predictions that the average property price in the city will rise by as much as £20,000 over the next five years, but when inflation is taken into account that is not an unrealistic or excessive figure. “We are already at a record high in terms of house prices, but we have just got back to, and possibly beyond, where we were in 2006 and 2007 when we last saw those record highs. It’s taken us nearly 10 years to get back to these figures. “There is always a level of demand, and confidence is now back.” He added that the average house price in Plymouth experienced by his firm is now £183,000. “As a result it can still be difficult for first-time buyers who do not have a reasonable deposit, but for those who have saved hard there are a growing number of attractive mortgage products available with many lenders now offering 90% and 95% mortgages. “This is all helping to stimulate the levels of activity in the market.”
Going the extra mile with customer care
2 new playg for Septemb rounds er 2014
Mansbridge & Balment’s commitment to customer care was underlined recently when they went the extra mile for retired couple Bobby and Susan Short. The Short’s move to their dream bungalow turned into a nightmare when an eleventh hour administrative error left them with nowhere to go. With their entire furniture and belongings in the back of a removal van Bobby and Susan, both 65, were distraught when they vacated their property in St Judes, Plymouth only to be told they couldn’t move into their new home. But Darren Lawson of Mansbridge Balment saved the day with the help of some professional colleagues in Plymouth – organising a three night stay in the city’s Duke of Cornwall hotel for the delighted couple. He rang the hotel director Jonathon Morcom to see if they could come to the aid of Bobby and Susan and even though the only room they had left was a four poster suite, they were prepared to offer it at a very generous discount. Darren then rang local solicitors Thompson and Jackson who were involved in the couple’s sale. He asked them if they would like to share the cost of the room with him – and company partner, Neil Keatt was more than happy to oblige. “When Darren rang me to say we were staying in the Duke of Cornwall, I couldn’t believe it. I thought it would be little hotel or a B&B,” said Bobby, a retired railway maintenance technician. “We were in our old house in just the clothes we stood up in when we got the call to say we couldn’t move into our new home. We literally had nowhere to go. Darren was an absolute gem though, the removal guys told us he was constantly on the phone trying to sort out the problem and kept in touch with us the whole time too.” Bobby and Susan were among purchasers moving into the first three bungalows to be sold at the brand new Lamellion Court Later Living development for the over 55s in Liskeard. “The first two sales went through fine, but there was an administrative problem further down the chain in Bobby and Susan’s sale and, as the hours ticked by, it became apparent that the sale wasn’t going to go through before the weekend,” said Darren. “Both the Duke of Cornwall Hotel and Thompson and Jackson were fantastic. It was a real team effort from three great local businesses and meant that what was a very distressing and upsetting situation for the Shorts ended happily with a successful move to their dream home.” The couple arrived at the hotel to find a bottle of wine in their room and they were also treated to dinner in the restaurant. The sale finally went through the following Monday enabling them to finally complete their move. “We are so happy to be in our home finally and I cannot thank Darren enough. He went way above and beyond and all the team at Mansbridge Balment were great, nothing was too much trouble,” added Bobby.

Challenges are nothing new to Plympton father of two Ross Kitto. Having faced the devastating news last year that he had a particularly aggressive form of testicular cancer, Ross had to undergo surgery and then chemotherapy. He suffered a number of side effects from the treatment, including shingles and was off work for almost six months. The illness not only impacted on Ross and his family but also meant that his successful business, Majestic Cleaning, was unable to trade for half of 2013. Ross returned to work in January and has been delighted with the support and loyalty shown by his customers. “It has been fantastic and I am privileged to have so many loyal customers who use my services time and again and also recommend me to others.” Ross was also so thankful to the team at Derriford and staff at the Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre that he and his wife Kate contributed 10 per cent of their profits from the business to Macmillan Cancer Support for the year 2013. Now Ross is facing two big challenges next year - jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet to raise funds for St Luke’s Hospice and taking on a 5km assault course in the RockSolidRace at Escot Park, near Exeter next March. Ross will be joined by his wife Kate and four friends who will raise funds for Macmillan Nurses by taking part. “We’re doing it for fun but hope to raise plenty of money in the process,” said Ross. “I’m gradually getting back to fitness and have started doing circuit training on a regular basis. But it has taken me longer to get back my strength than I thought it would.” In between training for his charity fund-raisers Ross is kept increasingly busy at work. Majestic Cleaning celebrates its fifth anniversary this year and despite the setbacks last year

He not only does a fantastic job he always ends up doing more than you ask him to. The last time he came to clean our carpets he cleaned our three piece suite as well without being asked or charging us for it. “He is a wonderful fellow and I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending him to anyone.”

HEALTH MATTERS
The importance of exercise -
Many things are written about how we should look after ourselves as we get older. We are told we should exercise five times a week for 30 minutes, we are told what to eat and what not to eat, what is good for us and what is bad, make sure we have enough protein, not too much fat, only good fats, and keep an eye on the carbohydrates! It is all quite confusing. Whether you are a sports therapist, physiotherapist, massage therapist or osteopath, we all try to provide our clients and patients with the best possible advice, and, as such, we keep as up to date as we possibly can with latest research. This means we spend a lot of time and effort finding and reading relevant journals to keep us abreast of the latest findings. I was recently reading an article as I was researching some information relating to exercise for the older client and was fascinated by the MRI scan pictures. Picture 1 is a cross section MRI scan of a Picture 1 (above) Picture 2 (below) 40 year old athlete’s quadriceps (thigh), the dark areas show the lean muscle mass. Picture 2 shows the same scan but this time, the picture is of a 74 year old sedentary man’s leg.
And the third picture, shows a 70 year old athlete’s legs. As you can tell, the 70-year-old athlete’s legs are not unlike that of the 40-year-old triathlete’s legs. The study’s authors Picture 3 write: “It is commonly believed that with ageing comes an inevitable decline from vitality to frailty. This includes feeling weak and often the loss of independence. These declines may have more to do with lifestyle choices, including sedentary living and poor nutrition, than the absolute potential of musculoskeletal aging. “In this study, we sought to eliminate the confounding variables of sedentary living and muscle disuse, and answer the question of what really happens to our muscles as we age if we are active. This study and those discussed here show that we are capable of preserving both muscle mass and strength with lifelong physical activity.” They conclude by writing: “The loss of lean muscle mass and the resulting subjective and objective weakness experienced with sedentary ageing imposes significant but modifiable personal, societal, and economic burdens. As sports medicine clinicians, we must encourage people to become or remain active at all ages. This study documents the possibility to maintain muscle mass and strength across the ages via simple lifestyle changes.” Whilst I am not advocating that we all become athletes overnight, I feel that these images really demonstrate the necessity for exercise as a lifelong challenge for us all.
I’m not an ambulance chaser, I actually care. When people ask me what I do for a living and I tell them I’m a personal injury solicitor, they often call me an ambulance chaser, but I’m not. I specialise in personal injury because I want to help people affected by injuries. It’s frustrating that people perceive my job in a negative light. I realise that the adverts for injury claims are irritating and that newspapers sensationalise stories of seemingly unfair compensation awards however, until you’ve been affected by an injury, you can’t really appreciate the difference a well managed claim can be for your future. Thirteen years ago, when I met my husband, I quickly came to realise what can happen to your life when you suffer an injury. At 23, he was the innocent victim of an unprovoked criminal attack. He was stabbed and is now blind in his left eye. Losing 50% of your sight is bad
enough, however he was training to be a Royal Navy pilot and his job depended on his vision. Despite attempts to save his military career he was medically discharged and that was that. Years of dedication and hard work were shattered in a split second. After you recover from the physical injury, it’s not easy to just walk into a new career and start paying the bills again. Previous qualifications aren’t always relevant and a permanent disability can restrict your options. For many people affected by a life changing injury, not making a claim is not an option. There are many benefits of instructing the right specialist solicitor for you. The period after an injury is a distressing and stressful time. To make a claim, you have to tell a stranger about your financial and medical situation. A compassionate, knowledgeable and understanding solicitor
makes this process much easier. Thanks to the help of a good solicitor, my husband received enough compensation to enable him to go back to University for three years and retrain. It wasn’t enough to make up for what he had lost but it certainly opened up his options. So now he is a personal injury barrister specialising in helping those who have suffered serious life changing injuries like he did. It’s not as exhilarating as flying but it’s a very worthwhile job helping others and it doesn’t leave either of us any time to chase ambulances!

no matter how old you are As any sports therapist, physiotherapist, massage therapist or osteopath will tell you, we all can give advice about exercise and nutrition, but it is down to the individual to make it happen. There may be medical reasons why you feel you cannot exercise, but a visit to your GP indicating that you wish to become more active is a first start. Your GP can perform tests to see if you are able to start exercise and can make a referral to an appropriate exercise professional to help you. Many sports therapists, physiotherapists, massage therapists and osteopaths, work with Personal Trainers who can devise a specific exercise programme to help you achieve your goals, and they can also provide the motivation to keep going when you feel you can’t do any more. Personally, I have made excuses over the last 10 years for not doing exercise, but the scales and these pictures don’t lie! Here’s to legs from Picture 3! Happy exercise.

GARDENING MATTERS
Plenty to do in the garden So here we are again: September is the month where the summer season begins to wind down and we can see the rewards of all our hardwork tending and caring in the garden. Harvest time is upon us and all of our fruit trees, bushes and vegetable plants are laden with bountiful crops.
soil, fed with Ericaceous feed and kept on the damp side. the fruit is ready to eat when they turn blue and can be picked from the branch without much resistance. Raspberries are great to grow up a wall, trellis or fence in full sun to partial shade in moist but free draining soil. The fruit Fruit trees such as apples, pears and plums will be ready when it turns a rich pinky red colour and easily comes away from the bush. will be ready to harvest. Try to do! I have seen many people along the road side picking raspberries and blackberries avoid pulling or tugging the fruit off the stem of Plymouth growing wild in the hedges, it brings back when you harvest as this can cause damage to Garden Centre the tree stem. child hood memories of picking some on the way to school! It is also better to try and harvest the fruit before it falls to the ground because the fruit If you haven’t planted fruit trees or bushes but would like to now is the perfect time to do it. The ground can bruise, split and get damaged severely shortening the is still warm enough for the roots to take and establish before length of time the fruit can be stored. It also makes it easier the winter but the air temperature is not too warm that it will for insects and slugs and snails to eat it! With pears try and pick them before they fully ripen and leave them on a sunny put strain on the plants to take up water. Simply choose what window sill to ripen. The plants will be better if grown in Ericaceous months. We have seen a number of dried trees due to the exceptional dry summer we had. Lots of pots and baskets to brighten up the autumn garden
is the one for you. It is mild and deliciously sweet and tastes great on its own but would also be equally at home in pasta dishes. For those of you who would like a bit of heat then ‘Razzamatazz’ or ‘Apache’ are the ones to choose. They have a good flavour and a medium heat that has a slight kick to it but doesn’t leave a lasting burning. It would go well with Mexican or Spanish dishes. For those who like a more oriental or fragrant taste ‘Thai Red Hot’ would b a good choice. It is hotter and definitely has a kick to it making it great for curries and stir fries. For those of you like myself who dare to try the really hot ones then I suggest ‘Demon’ a tiny but extremely firey and potent chilli delicious to begin with but after 30 seconds the heat begins to build leaving a lasting satisfying burn! Definitely not for the fainthearted just ask most of the plant team! Remember its the little ones you need to watch – don’t be fooled in thinking you need more as they are small, smaller varieties are the hottest! Autumn shrubs are piling into garden centres now with lots of lovely choices for autumn colour – more on that next month. But for now think about your pots and baskets which can begin to look tired and past their best. Its time to empty them and replace with fresh bedding that will last right through the winter. We have a great range of pansies, violas, cyclamen, heathers chrysanthemums and ivy arriving weekly. These plants will give the garden and patio a little bit of colour and charm during the colder months when there is not much else around. The best sellers are the range of bi-colour cyclamen which really stand out form the crowd. Alternatively for some instant gardening and high impact colour choose from our fabulous range of ready made baskets and pots which are guaranteed to provide colour until the spring.
