Well, the school holidays are over and the children are back at school and college (at last!). A little more time for us working mums to think about getting back to our usual routines. I’ve set myself a challenge of getting fitter in the months ahead, even if it means walking to places where I would normally jump in the car. The weather was so good in the early part of September (why do they call it an Indian summer?) that it’s been a really pleasant experience to visit some of Plymouth’s parks and open spaces. The city has an incredible amount of public green space and it’s great that more and more people are taking advantage of the facilities available. I’m always trying to find effective ways of losing those extra pounds that follow when you’ve given birth to children, and I was interested to hear about a new enterprise in Plymouth called My Body Boost. Launched by Louise Brown, the business offers people the chance to benefit from something called Far Infrared Rays, which occur naturally in sunlight and in our bodies. Louise has invested in a space-age capsule emitting these rays, which are not only good for the body and heart - but also apparently burn off around 600 to 800 calories while laying on your back for 30 minutes. Sounds good to me! Eager to find out more we sent one of our team to try it out. You can read her report on page 8. This issue also includes the usual success stories including the first anniversary being celebrated by a young couple who last year achieved their dream of running their own restaurant. Read their story on page 18. We also talk to the team behind local business Extra Help - which is enjoying dramatic growth. See page 12 for details Hope you enjoy the latest issue...

ART MATTERS
River Tamar stars in a unique film festival
Paula Orrell, artistic director of the River Tamar film festival, which includes a screening of Apocalypse Now on a Torpoint ferry!
We are in the midst of a film festival that started in September and is running through to mid-October. The festival features new commissions from local, national and international artists and filmmakers, alongside screenings of popular and cult classics in impressive settings along the banks of the Tamar. Using the landscape of the River Tamar, Plymouth University and the River Tamar Project have come up with a major cultural programme called ‘It’s All About The River’. The focus on the river as an artistic backdrop to the project could last for several years. The aim is to explore the historical and future connections of local and international communities with the river. I caught up with Paula Orrell, artistic director of the

River Tamar Project and she told me: “Working with such renowned artists allows us to explore the international reach and context of the river and to help develop new thinking around the River Tamar’s future. “We are enabling national and international artists, as well as individual communities, to create striking works and thought-provoking experiences. The festival will not only celebrate this important natural asset, but will raise its profile both nationally and internationally. We are using this cultural programme to draw people to the area of the Tamar. We are also hoping the project will encourage cultural tourism and that it might highlight businesses and livelihoods all along the Tamar Valley.” By It’s All About The River spans the tidal reach of the Tamar and launched last month with a weekend of events in Calstock and Gunnislake. It will continue flowing downstream, stopping at Bere Alston, Cargreen, Saltash, Barne Barton and Devonport, before its conclusion on Sunday October 12. The venues include Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s striking Royal Albert Bridge, stately homes such as Pentillie Castle and the dockyard of the Royal Navy. The programme of contemporary and historic film, compiled by artist and film curator Lucy Reynolds and Peninsula Arts film programmer David McErlane, includes open air presentations of cinema classics, special screenings just for children and the premieres of new films. It will also use the extensive archive of films relating to rivers at LUX and the South West Film and Television Archive. One of the screenings will take place whilst floating on the Torpoint Ferry. For foot passengers only, Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam war epic Apocalypse Now comes alive in a unique cinema setting on Thursday, October 9 at 7.45pm. Wrap up warm to partake in this experience set against the backdrop of the Tamar’s naval dockyard. Being staged with funding from Arts Council England, the British Film Institute Film Festival Fund, the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, the Heritage Lottery Fund and FEAST, the festival aims to celebrate and revitalise cultural spaces and communities and raise new questions about the river’s potential as an economic and cultural force in the 21st century. Paula and the team would encourage people who want to get involved with the film festival to please get in touch via their contact pages at www.tamarproject.org.uk

Life-changing Foot Solutions! on her own, around the store completely unaided! It was a hugely emotional moment and there were a lot of tears from staff and family alike,” said Andrew.
A devastating brain stem stroke four years ago left Irene Gresty unable to stand or walk. The stroke affected her balance and also led to impaired sight and hearing.
Irene said: “I simply couldn’t believe it - we were all overwhelmed with happiness and delight.”
The retired administrator underwent extensive treatment but was confined to a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
She has purchased customised arch supports and shoes from Foot Solutions and since her visit to the shop in May has not needed her wheelchair or mobility scooter and can now walk normally.
“I gradually learned to stand for a short time and take a few steps, but my life had changed completely. I was determined to walk again one day, but didn’t know how long it would take.” Irene, 72, and her engineer husband Roger had lived in Plymouth for 30 years before his job took him to London. But with Irene’s health continuing to cause concern, her daughter Marianne persuaded her parents to move back to Plymouth at the end of last year.
A delighted Irene Gresty with Andrew Scowcroft Solutions, takes up the story: “When Irene came into the shop she was unable to walk and was supported on either side by her daughter and husband.
Soon after, she was able to enjoy a Mediterranean cruise with her husband and sisters - who were overwhelmed when they saw Irene walking again. “It was a great holiday - I was even able to get up and dance,” she said.
“After going through Irene’s medical history, we were able to take her through our Foot Assessment to better understand the nature of her mobility challenges. We then fitted Irene with arch supports inside a pair of our shoes and asked her to stand up.
And Irene, a former swimming coach, is now able to enjoy swimming again. “I didn’t dare go in the water before - but now I’m regularly swimming three miles a week,” she said.

Little did they realise that the move would totally change Irene’s life. Marianne had seen the Foot Solutions advertisement in the magazine and persuaded her mum to visit the Royal Parade premises. “She said I had nothing to lose and it was worth a try,” said Irene.
“I cannot thank Foot Solutions enough for what they have done for me.”

HEALTH MATTERS A revolutionary health treatment that harnesses the beneficial effects of Far Infrared Rays is now available in Plymouth. The state-of-the-art machine, called an I-Capsule, uses Far Infrared therapy to promote calorie loss and improve health and well-being. It has been brought to Plymouth by Louise Brown, who has worked in the healthcare industry for more than 20 years. She has established a business called My Body Boost to promote the benefits of the I-Capsule and its cutting edge technology. Louise, who is a qualified chiropodist said: “I became interested in the healing qualities of Far Infrared Rays (FIR) and discovered that a company in Birmingham was using the I-Capsule, and also marketing the product. “I went up to Birmingham and had daily sessions for about a week and was amazed at the results. It boosted my energy levels and I now use it two or three times a week. Although I didn’t set out to lose weight I have actually lost half a stone through using it,” said Louise. The I-Capsule is located at the Soft Soles salon in Armada Way, where a whole range of health and beauty treatments are available. Louise said: “As a regular client at Soft Soles I had got to know the proprietor Sam Loughran and she was very enthusiastic when I suggested that we could install it at the salon.” Clients simply spend 20 to 30 minutes on the capsule, which moves up and down the body emitting the FIR. The treatment is then followed by a 10 minute session on the Flabelos machine. Louise said: “The benefits of FIR have been recognised for hundreds of years. They occur naturally through sunlight Getting the treatment...

Research by NASA has shown that FIR on the cardiovascular system was a great way of keeping astronauts’ hearts in optimal condition. “FIR gently increases blood flow by expanding the capillaries that carry blood. It also increases oxygenation and regeneration of the blood, deeply detoxifying it for the improved functioning of all of the major organs in the body, which depend on blood for energy. “This detoxification is on the deepest level, allowing hidden toxins in the blood and tissue to be dissolved or immobilized. “When the body is exposed to FIR, healing processes are stimulated and dramatically increased, while circulation and heart function are also improved. “The rays can also have a curative effect - by way of thermal energy - on conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism,” she added. She said: “I thought it might be claustrophobic, but it’s actually a very relaxing and pleasant experience. “I had been suffering from lower back and hip pain for a few days when I started the treatment and Louise explained that the FIR could possibly help. “Even after a couple of sessions I did notice a marked improvement and I found that I was actually sleeping much better as a result. By the end of the week’s treatment the pain in my hips and back had gone altogether. After the first couple of sessions I did experience some mild hangover-type symptoms, but this was all part of the detox effect. “Louise made sure that I drank plenty of water each day as

St Luke’s lottery winner Paula Turner with her new cooker
Plymouth’s St Luke’s Hospice needs to raise £4.5 million every year to provide the vital end of life care for local people in the city and the surrounding area. Last year St Luke’s provided care for over 3,000 patients and their families at home, in hospital and at the hospice in Turnchapel.

One of the important fund-raising schemes is the St Luke’s lottery, which delivers a top prize of £1,000 every week, plus a second prize of £200 and 30 prizes of £10 each. It costs just £1 a week to take part in the lottery which can be paid by direct debit, cheque or cash. Plymouth mum Paula Turner was delighted when she won £1,000 in the lottery earlier this year. “I couldn’t believe it when the letter landed on the door mat,” said Paula. “After the initial shock, I knew straight away what I was going to use the money to buy - a top of the range cooker.” Paula and her family live in North Road West and she has always been a big supporter of St Luke’s. She has taken part in Midnight Walks and a few weeks ago handed over £120 raised by saving 2p coins in a big Coke bottle. The St Luke’s lottery is an easy and regular way for Paula to show support for her local charity. It was when Paula’s sister was taken ill that she began to see first hand just how important the money generated by the lottery is to patients and their relatives. Paula said: “My sister Sarah had lung cancer and sadly passed away three years ago. Sarah spent time in the St Luke’s In Patient Unit at Turnchapel and received care by the St Luke’s specialist nurses at her home. “It was important for Sarah to be at home and St Luke’s made this possible. We can’t thank St Luke’s enough for the care they gave to my sister and the general public who make this care possible. “Everybody in the area knows what a great job St Luke’s does, but when it happens to someone close to you, you really begin to appreciate how your support makes such a difference.” Paula encouraged others to show their support for St Luke’s by joining the lottery. “It’s so easy to play, once you’ve set up your direct debit it takes care of itself.”

The Plymouth Magazine October 2014
Extra Help was originally launched in Milton Keynes by Claire, who now lives in Stoke, and her friend Sarah Jackson. They first met when Claire was publishing a series of local magazines and Sarah – who ran a cleaning franchise – was one of her regular advertisers. Between them they have well over 40 years’ experience serving the community, including more than 25 years in the care industry and 20 years running their own businesses. Claire said: “A lot of Sarah’s customers were elderly and wanted extra help over and above cleaning. She felt there was the potential for a new business offering not only cleaning, but also home help services such as shopping, ironing, dog walking and basic companionship.” “The idea for Extra Help was born and Sarah asked me if I would like to run the business with her. I felt that a new challenge was just what I needed, so I sold my publishing business and joined forces with Sarah.” The business was launched in October 2010 and Milton Keynes was the first area to be established and is now being successfully run as a franchise. The opportunity arose for Claire to move to the West Country with her three children and she established the Extra Help franchise in Plymouth and South East Cornwall at the beginning of 2012. With the business booming, Claire last year appointed Louise Pen-Collings, a qualified dietitian, to take over and manage the franchise in the Plymouth area. In the 18 months since Louise was appointed the franchise network has grown rapidly with a total of 17 Extra Help businesses now operating up and down the country. With such dramatic growth Claire recognised the need to appoint Louise as franchise manager to support the growing network. It meant a new manager was needed to run the Plymouth and South East Cornwall franchise - and that role has been taken up by Samantha Smith, who joined the team a few weeks ago. Sam had previous work experience in sales and marketing and also as a PA - but wanted a new challenge. She heard about the opening at Extra Help and was delighted to be appointed. “I am thrilled to be working with Claire and Louise,” said Sam, who also lives in Stoke. “The Plymouth franchise is already doing exceptionally well with around 80 clients and I want to see that number continue to grow in the months ahead,” said Sam. Extra Help provides support for the elderly, busy mums, working professionals and also families with a range of home help services and cleaning. Claire said it was a recession resilient business with low overheads and proven systems and procedures ensuring not only top quality service to clients, but also a viable, profitable business model. “More and more elderly people continue to live independently in their own homes, but need a helping hand. We recognise that they don’t need a full-time or live in carer, but having a little help with tasks such as shopping, gardening and transport to appointments and social events can significantly extend the time that they are able to stay in their own homes.” Claire is now setting her sights on helping to establish more Extra Help franchises in other parts of Devon, including Tavistock, Exeter and Torquay.
team Sam “This part of the country is certainly a popular place for people to retire, so there are plenty of elderly people who could do with a helping hand. Equally, there are many professionals and new mothers or mums who work from home who we can help.” She said that everyone working for Extra Help was passionate about the service Founder Claire Robinson (centre) they provide and she was pictured with new recruit Sam Smith excited about the future (right) and Louise Pen-Collings growth of the business. She said the key to Extra Help’s success is simplicity; clients are charged an average fee of less than £11 per hour for all services and home helpers are self-employed, so there’s no payroll or PAYE to manage. Extra Helps success has not gone unnoticed. The company has been shortlisted for the Small Business of the Year in the Devon Venus Awards and Louise has also been nominated as Employee of the Year in the same scheme. Claire was a runner up in the Herald Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Extra Help is a also a member of the Buy With Confidence and Support With Confidence schemes run by Trading Standards.
www.cornerstonevision.com
@CornerstoneVis
Networking and social media has played an important part in Extra Help’s success and on November 7 Claire and the team are organising a networking fund-raiser at the Boringdon Hall Hotel to raise funds for the elderly and dementia wards at Derriford Hospital.

Celebrations at Hip Hip Hooray thanks to the talented team at A ground-breaking online wedding stationery business launched just six months ago is proving to be a resounding success - thanks to the creativity and skills of Plymouthbased Elixel, winners of the Plymouth Magazine’s Young Business of the Year 2014. HipHipHooray.com was launched by Stoke couple Jenny and Emiko Adjene in March this year - and the site has already been nominated for a top award, winning plaudits and praise for the content and responsiveness of the website. The site enables users to customise and instantly print their own wedding stationery using stunning design ranges developed by HIp Hip Hooray. The couple had approached several leading software houses in the UK and America to develop their website - but were told it couldn’t be done. Jenny and Emiko were aware of Elixel and the services they offered because Outset Plymouth had helped both enterprises get off the ground. They decided to talk to the Elixel team and were delighted with the response. Jenny said: “We aim to be the leading UK brand in wedding and celebration stationery - and also see huge potential in the global market, due to all our products being available as instant printables. “When we approached Elixel we were impressed not only with their creativity, but also their ‘can do’ attitude. The end results have exceeded all our expectations. “Our sales are growing at a rapid rate and we have already
been chosen as one of the finalists in the Perfect Weddings Awards for best wedding stationery. The business has also attracted a huge amount of media coverage, which has helped promote the brand. We have already received orders from many overseas countries, including Singapore, Australia, Norway and a number of Middle East states.” The development of the HipHipHooray brand and e-commerce website has been Elixel’s biggest and most ambitious project to date. The success of their work comes just two years after Elixel was launched by four former Plymouth University graduates who all studied digital art and technology. The quartet - Gavin Jones, Becky Veater, Paul Bird and Christian Cook - combine design, technology and innovative skills to create branding, build websites, and develop mobile apps for a wide range of businesses and organisations. After initial briefings with Jenny and Emiko, the Elixel team spent several months in close collaboration with the client developing the HipHipHooray brand identity and then working on the website. Becky said: “After we had developed the brand we then created the website using specialist e-commerce software and including a bespoke product customisation feature. This included a live previewer that allows users to view the changes they make instantly on screen. “Following our ethos we also made it fully accessible via smartphones utilising up to date web technologies to add that extra spark, allowing users to create their designs at any

The money will be used to support the charity in its aims to promote understanding of the sea through education, conservation and research. The brainchild of awardwinning food writer, restaurateur and chef Mitch Tonks, Rockfish Plymouth serves up a wide range of fantastic family seafood, most of which is sustainably sourced and certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), with much coming straight from local fishermen. Mitch Tonks said: “We’re already big supporters of the Fishermen’s Mission charity and the work they do but wanted to work closely with a charity in Plymouth, and we love the work that the National Marine Aquarium is doing. FOOD MATTERS A Plymouth couple are celebrating a highly-successful first year in business after launching a new restaurant and tapas bar in the city. Iranian-born Mo Vassif and his partner Zuzi Fancovicova, originally from Slovakia, opened the aptly-named Zuzimo eatery and bar in the middle of October last year. In the space of just 12 months their determination and enthusiasm has seen them established as one of the most popular eateries in Plymouth. They have not only secured a growing number of loyal customers, but also created several jobs for young people. Mo said: “It has been a lot of hard work and long hours - but we are thoroughly enjoying running our own business.” Zuzimo has already received more than 220 reviews on Trip Advisor, with 90 per rating it excellent or very good, ranking it among the top four restaurants in the city. Mo said that it taken time to recruit staff who shared the passion and enthusiasm as the couple themselves. They now have an all-female team of chefs - Zoe Walden, Mia Stannard and Kate Cooper - and a team of enthusiastic front of house staff. “We are members of the 1000 Club,” said Zuzi, “and have taken on several trainees who have since become regular members of the team. “Like our food, they are from all around the world, which we’re sure adds to the appeal of Zuzimo.” The popularity of the restaurant means that it is now open seven days a week and counts celebrities such as Tom Daley, Andy Banks and former ‘Dragon’ Doug Richard among its clientele. Zuzimo offers a tapas bar and fine dining all under one roof. The cosy bar area is an ideal place to enjoy a glass of wine or soft drink and sample tapas dishes from around the world for as little as £3.95 each. Diners can also enjoy a two course express lunch in the elegant 70-seater restaurant for just £9.95 from Mondays to Fridays. Also popular is the Tapas Tuesday promotion offering a choice of three tapas and a glass of wine for £10 or six tapas and a bottle of wine for £30. On Thursday ladies can enjoy a free glass of prosecco and all children under five eat for free at any time. In the evening diners can choose from a good selection of starters from £4.50, mains from £9.50 and desserts from £4.50. There is something to suit all tastes and appetites from tapas to steaks, pastas to tagines. The couple paid tribute to the ongoing support and advice from Rob Guy of Outset Finance, whose help in launching the business was invaluable. Mo said: “We still see Rob on a regular basis. He has been fantastic - we could not have achieved our dream without his help on the financial aspects of our business plan.” Mo also thanked the team at the Plymouth Magazine for its support. “We get a far greater response from our advertising and editorial in the magazine than any other publication,” he said. “The magazine has been instrumental in the success of our first year.” Zuzimo is now busy taking bookings for Christmas parties, offering festive lunches for £20 and dinner at £25 per head. The restaurant will also be open on Christmas Day for a five-course lunch offering guests a festive treat at just £39.95 per person. “We already have lots of bookings for Christmas parties and our Christmas Day lunch is filling fast,” said Zuzi.

WANT TO REDUCE YOUR ENERGY BILLS? HERE’S A CLEAR WAY TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF POUNDS WITH ENERGY-SAVING GLASS & WE DO WINDOWS LTD. Home owners who are keen to reduce energy bills, or are considering replacing their double glazing, could save thousands of pounds – by simply changing the glass. The process is painless and inexpensive. Replacing your old double glazing with Planitherm energy saving glass, could cost as little as £1000 for a typical 2/3 bedroom house. By replacing just the glass, you not only save on the cost of new frames, but also on the cost of heating your home. Sebastian Treglown of Devon based We Do Windows said: "Many homeowners think that if their windows are draughty or the double glazing has failed, the only answer is to replace the complete window. But that can often mean significant expense when there really is no need to replace the frames, which in the main are manufactured to last for many years”. Failed double-glazing that has misted or steamed up is a real eye-sore, but with We Do Windows, rectifying this can cost much less than you may think - by replacing just the glass and not the frames. Fitting Planitherm energy efficient glass into existing frames is a much cheaper and effective solution. The advanced coating technology of Planitherm glass reflects radiated heat back into the room, rather than allowing it to escape through the windows. Sebastian said “by upgrading to Planitherm, heat loss through the windows will be reduced by at least 40%, which means for very little cost you will benefit from a warmer house and cheaper heating bills.” Condensation on the inner pane could also be significantly reduced. Research has shown that a staggering 26% of all domestic heat loss escapes through the windows, so upgrading to Planitherm will yield instant results. Plus, combined with virtually any window frame Planitherm will improve your Window Energy Rating and in some cases achieve A+.
Sebastian added “We Do Windows provide a wide range of double glazing repairs including locks, handles, hinges, seals etc. and fit Planitherm to provide an extremely cost-effective alternative to replacing existing double glazing." As a family-run business, We Do Windows pride themselves on offering great value for money while providing excellent customer service. The company is approved by Plymouth Trading Standards Buy With Confidence and Which Trusted Traders schemes. Here are a couple of testimonials from some satisfied customers. "Thank You Sebastian and Ross for an excellent job professionally carried out at a very reasonable cost. Nov 10 UB40 Following their sell-out UK tour earlier this year, Birmingham’s reggae stars UB40 embark on a second leg UK tour. Reflecting on the success of the spring leg of the tour, UB40 sax player Brian Traver said: “Playing numerous intimate venues is a much more enjoyable experience for both our audience and the band, compared to playing a handful of enormodomes with the audience stuck thirty feet away behind a safety barrier. Every night we were looking at each other and saying ‘Why didn’t we do this years ago?’” Nov 12 AN EVENING WITH NOEL FIELDING Noel is embarking on his first live tour in five years. Expect a magical mix of Noel’s unique brand of stand up comedy, live animation and music. Nov 13 PASSENGER By the start of last year, Mike Rosenberg knew his life was about to change. Nov 15 JON RICHARDSON: NIDIOT Jon Richardson is checking his tyre pressures, hoovering his floor mats and putting an emergency packed lunch in the boot of his car, ready to hit the road again with a brand new tour ‘Nidiot’. The perennial singleton and misanthrope is determined to become a more easygoing person for the sake of his friends and his future health. Come and find out whether or not a leopard can change its spots, or if they are doomed to be angry forever not to have been given a more uniform and symmetrical fur pattern. Nov 16 BELLOWHEAD Britain’s most successful traditional folk act Bellowhead are 10 years old this year. A blistering 11-piece band fusing folk, funk, rock, world, jazz, music hall and classical music, they have placed themselves at the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene while harnessing all the power and mystery of English and European musical traditions. Nov 29 LILY ALLEN Lily, who has been touring extensively all summer including playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, has just finished a short US tour with Miley Cyrus. Lily will return to the US in September/October for a lengthy headline tour. Lily’s current album ‘Sheezus’ entered the chart at No. 1 and has currently spawned three top 10 singles. Dec 4 BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB The band’s broad and varied body of work means the North London four-piece are both as at home with the intimate acoustic nature of ‘Eyes Off You’ as they are with the euphoric highs of first single ‘Carry Me’ and the exhilirating rush of album opener ‘Overdone’. In songwriting terms, Bombay Bicycle Club, who are still only 24 years old, possess a king of dynamism that’s been missing from young British bands for years. They have mastered the melodic, the melancholic and at the same time, the euphoric.

Joanna Trollope, Will Self, Nathan Filer and Sarah Hilary will read from their latest novels, while Sir Andrew Motion talks about his life as a poet and reading from his latest collection, The Customs House. Kate Adie will be one of the authors speaking about the role of women in the First World War, while Sarah Churchwell will talk about the genesis of a literary classic, The Great Gatsby. There will be events for children, including a dedicated Family Day, and the opening night including the crowning of the 2014 Plymouth Young City Laureate. The South West writers looking to inspire future creatives in the region will include Plymouth University lecturers Annika Bautz, Miriam Darlington, Angela Smith, Tom Vowler and Min Wild, as well as former prisoner turned writer Caspar Walsh and Plymouth City Council Poet Laureate Michael Sullivan. Joanna Trollope, writer of 17 bestselling novels, believes the festival has an important role to play in igniting public passion about the written word: “In this digital age, I believe books and literature are more important than ever. A screen doesn’t feed the imagination or expand the mind in the way that something on a page (paper or electronic) does. Technology is another way of reading or acquiring knowledge, but it is not as enriching to the heart and mind as works which demand more from the reader in the first place.”

A prestigious World War One concert in aid of the charity War Child is taking place in November. Organised by Plymouth-based Jeanie Moore the concert is entitled ‘We Will Remember’ and takes place on Sunday November 23 at 4pm in the Great Hall at Dartington, near Totnes. The charity event will feature the Chamber Ensemble of London, who have given dozens of classical concerts and include some of the country’s finest string players. The Ensemble will perform ‘No Man’s Land’, a new suite for double bass and string orchestra by the West Country composer Clive Jenkins. The work includes readings of English, French, German and Russian poetry from the Great War. The soloist is Chris West co-principal bass player with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and for many years previously the solo double bass player with the Guildhall Strings. He is also professor of double bass at Trinity College of Music, London. He plays on a double bass made by Giovanni Battista Ceruti in Cremona in the 18th century. The work was commissioned by concert organiser Jeanie Moore MVO on behalf of Gard & Co Solicitors as a fundraiser for WAR child. The concert will include works by composers who fought in the war – Vaughan Williams, Hindemith and Kreisler – as well as lighter music from the period with Ivor Novello and Irving Berlin prominently featured. Research by the Ensemble’s director, violinist Peter Fisher, has come up with a salon piece, ‘Angels of Mons’ by Sydney C Baldock. Battlefield, homefront. peace, war and aftermath are all reflected in this very varied programme entitled ‘We Will Remember’.

its new season
Music
Rehearsals are under way by the 150 singers in Plymouth Philharmonic Choir for the first concert in their new season which begins with Haydn’s The Seasons. Conductor Christopher Fletcher is very excited about the concert: “It’s a wonderful piece of music and not often done. This is because choirs tend to perform instead ‘The Creation’ which is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Towards the end of his life Haydn wrote The Seasons spurred on by the success of The Creation which was being performed all over Europe and had brought him great success. “In spite of his ailing health The Seasons also turned out to be a great work, a masterpiece in its own right and I am delighted we are performing it again.” The choir will be accompanied by their full orchestra in Plymouth Guildhall performing The Seasons on Sunday November 30 at 7pm. The choir’s 2015 concerts include Verdi’s Requiem on March 22 at Plymouth Guildhall and Handel’s Israel in Egypt at the same venue on July 5. New singers are always welcome at rehearsals which take place in Mead King Hall at Plymouth College every Thursday at 7.15pm.

WHAT’S ON Until November 29 PLYMOUTH’S GREAT WAR: THREE TOWNS UNITED IN CONFLICT Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery An exhibition that gives a unique overview of the First World War from a Plymouth perspective. ‘Plymouth’s Great War’ features the story of the amalgamation of the Three Towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse in 1914; reflecting on them as home to the Royal Navy, Army Garrisons, Royal Marines and Royal Naval Air Service. It will also look at the impact of the war on local people’s lives – touching on recruitment, conscription, the fighting, the cost, the aftermath and the ‘home front’. The exhibition features items, images and documents from the city’s arts, heritage and archive collections. This is not just a standard review of the First World War from start to finish. It’s the story of Plymouth and Plymothians from 1914 to 1918. finds from a remote spot on Dartmoor go on public display for the first time. The finds are around 4,000 years old and were discovered within a stone chest burial (a cist) at Whitehorse Hill. This is the most outstanding site to have been excavated locally in over 100 years. The items that were discovered in the cist are of national and international importance and provide one of the best glimpses into life in Bronze Age Southern England that academics and scientists have ever had. This is a partnership exhibition between Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA). simply by taking a journey on foot. Regardless of the landscape or location, during the last four decades these ‘explorers’ have made their mark. ‘Walk On’ shows that from land art to conceptual art and from street photography to film, much of the important art of our time has been created through an act of walking. Scaling the heights with Reel Rock Tour One of the world’s fastest growing short film festivals is coming to Plymouth. This year’s Reel Rock Tour showcases the feature length documentary Valley Uprising which will treat UK audiences to a rare trip back in time to experience 60 years of climbing history, epic rivalry, adventure and rebellion. Vividly brought to life on the big screen through digitally animated-archival photography, spectacular movie footage from today and the past as well as interviews with climbing legends, Valley Uprising tells the story of the bold men and women who broke with convention and redefined the limits of human possibility in California’s Yosemite National Park. The film will be screened at Theatre 1 in the Roland Levinsky Building at Plymouth University on October 29 at 7.30pm.

FESTIVE MATTERS
‘Duke’ team gearing up for the busiest few weeks of the year With Christmas less than three months away the team at Plymouth’s Duke of Cornwall Hotel is busy preparing for the busiest few weeks of the year. Around 5,000 diners will be enjoying festive fare from the hotel’s extensive Christmas and New Year programme Getting set for Christmas...from left head chef Kevin Scargill, events and
- which is launched on Friday November 28 and continues through until New Year’s Eve. Melanie Williams, the hotel’s events and functions manager said: “Christmas is always a special time for hotels like the Duke of Cornwall. It takes months of preparation and lots of hard work, but it is always very satisfying to see so many people enjoying themselves and entering into the festive spirit.” The hotel’s Christmas and New Year brochure was published a few weeks ago - and bookings are running at an extremely healthy level. The jewel in the Christmas crown is the hotel’s Christmas Day seven-course lunch which includes a complimentary mulled wine on arrival. Served in the hotel’s elegant AA Rosette restaurant, the lunch includes live classic Christmas entertainment. Mel said: “Our Christmas Day luncheon is always a complete sell-out and it’s already filling up fast. We have quite a number of regulars who come back year after year to enjoy the special day with us. It’s always a happy occasion.” It’s a similar offering on New Year’s Eve with a six course menu, welcome aperitif, live music, dancing and a glass of sparkling wine at midnight to celebrate the occasion. Special Christmas party nights will be held in the hotel’s ballroom and restaurant from the end of November until December 23. The package includes a three-course dinner and disco until 1am. Partygoers can also take advantage of special accommodation rates available for anyone attending the Christmas events. A superior double room including full English breakfast is just £95, with a standard room equivalent at £75. The hotel’s Christmas lunch - available from November 28 to December 23 - is popular with office parties and other groups. The three course lunch, including coffee and mints is

available at £19.95. A two-course option is also available at £16.50. While the front of house staff led by operations manager Peter Adams will be kept very busy serving thousands of meals, it’s even more demanding in the kitchen where head chef Kevin Scargill and his 10-strong team will be operating with military precision. Kevin was appointed head chef in the spring - but is no stranger to the Duke of Cornwall. He spent 11 years there working his way through the ranks before spending nearly three years as a chef manager in Afghanistan providing catering facilities for military bases. “I have spent many Christmases working in the kitchens at the Duke of Cornwall, but this will be my first in charge of the whole operation,” said Kevin. “I’m really looking forward to it. Although it’s on a smaller scale here in Plymouth, the planning has to be just as detailed as it was in Afghanistan.” Kevin’s Christmas shopping list will include up to 100 turkeys, more than 100 sack loads of potatoes, daily deliveries of fresh carrots, broccoli and other vegetables and all the ingredients for thousands of mince pies, hundreds of Christmas puddings and a mountain of ‘pigs in blankets’ – sausages wrapped in bacon. Kevin said: “We source as much of our ingredients and materials as we can from local producers and suppliers - and Christmas will be no exception.” Mel added: “We’re all looking forward to welcoming friends old and new in the weeks leading up to Christmas and over the Christmas and New Year period.”

TRAVEL MATTERS As the children go back to school and the nights start drawing in, we inevitably start to think about what we will do for Christmas. Many who travel to warmer climes over the festive period already have holidays booked and in some cases plans for Christmas 2015 are also confirmed! For travellers who are specific about their holiday requirements over Christmas and New Year, an early decision is often essential to avoid disappointment as demand is high and availability is limited. For many others, Christmas is firmly seen as a time at home with the family and the idea of going away would be regarded as untraditional and just too expensive. Those who do contemplate the idea of a holiday away at Christmas may consider it a replacement for all the usual gifts they would buy for the family, but it is often difficult to decide on the best choice of break for such a special occasion. The first festive break idea that invariably springs to mind is a trip to Lapland to visit Santa and take part in various snowbased activities and the most popular way of doing this is on a day trip, flying from Exeter or Bristol. When I first visited Lapland several years ago, we flew to Rovaniemi in Finland, which was the initial gateway to the area and the main destination for most visitors at the time. However, the area around Rovaniemi has developed significantly over the years and become very commercialised so some of the specialist companies now fly in to Enontekio, which is north of the Arctic Circle in a more remote, unspoilt area which feels more like the authentic Lapland. During your memorable day in the frozen Arctic, you can enjoy a journey on a sledge being pulled by a team of huskies or a slightly more sedate sleigh ride drawn by calmer reindeer. If you remember to take along your driving licence, you will also have the opportunity to drive a skidoo through the silent snowscape or try your hand at tobogganing. The highlight of the day for many, however, will be discovering the hidden log cabin where Santa stays, meeting the man himself and listening to him discuss Christmas wishes with children young and old. On all trips to Lapland, you don’t need to worry about taking your own collection of bulky winter clothes as hiring thermal suits and boots is included in the cost of the trip for all travellers. With flights from Bristol on December 19 and 23 and from Exeter on December 20, these Lapland day trips are available for £489 per adult and £469 per child. If you feel that a day trip may simply not give you enough time to experience Lapland, we can also offer a choice of three-night breaks flying from Bristol on November 21 and December 20. Prices for these longer stays start from £879 per adult and £789 per child although, as expected, the December departure carries a premium. These short breaks include flights, transfers, accommodation on a full board basis, a private visit to see Santa and much more time to experience the snow activities. Having taken both of my children to Lapland in the past, I would definitely recommend the experience especially at a time when the children are still young enough to believe in Santa Claus. However, I would certainly not discount the idea of this trip for adults only as I feel that people of all ages would find it a truly magical experience. In recent years, I have written about the Northern Lights on several occasions. Joanna Lumley’s television special is repeated quite often and is mentioned by many clients as what prompted them to book a Northern Lights experience. This can be done in many ways to a number of different destinations although cruises are a popular option, either sailing directly from the UK or a fly-cruise with specialist Norwegian Coastal voyage cruise operator, Hurtigruten. Itineraries are available cruising from Bergen up the coastline passing Fjords to Kirkeness in Northern Norway and I was
46\

very excited to discover recently that the company was also arranging a selection of three and four night breaks in search of the Northern Lights flying from Exeter and Bristol. Here is a summary of what is included with these holidays: √√ Direct flights from your local airport √√ The loan of thermal boots and suits √√ Full board accommodation in a remote location away from any light pollution and 160 miles north of the Arctic Circle √√ A two hour Northern Lights snowmobile safari √√ A Northern Lights forest trek √√ A wild husky safari and a visit to a reindeer camp Exeter has one special departure on the January 25 for 4 nights with prices from just £859 per person. Flying from Bristol, there is a choice of three night departures on November 21, December 20 and March 8, all

from just ÂŁ749 per person with an Arctic whale watching trip included in the December 20 itinerary. Alternatively, a four night option is available from Bristol on March 8 for ÂŁ899 per person. I would suggest any of these holiday break ideas as an ideal early or belated Christmas or birthday gift with a difference. I hope that in the future, operators will offer a wider range of special trips like these and I would encourage you to support these local departures in the mean time for this to happen. If you would like any more information regarding any of the trips featured in this article, please do not hesitate to give me a call. Happy holidays!

PROPERTY MATTERS
Dan turns his business dream into a reality Dan Robinson has achieved his dream of running his own property sales and lettings business. Earlier this year 36-year-old Dan had the opportunity to take over Smeaton Homes, after managing the business for five years, and he grabbed it with both hands. Under Dan’s direction Smeaton Homes is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Plymouth sales and lettings arena. Dan has been working hard on the company’s image over the past year, redecorating its head office on Mutley Plain and organising a complete rebrand of the logo, website and marketing materials. With a well established reputation in the lettings and property management market, Dan has now added property sales to the portfolio of services offer Dan, who moved to Plymouth 13 years ago after quitting his job as a part-time Redcoat at Butlins in Bognor, has since spent most of the time since working in lettings and sales.
“When I embarked on my career in estate agency I was told by the boss of one of the companies I applied to that I would never be an estate agent. I’ve been very happy to prove him wrong,” said Dan. Dan is committed to supporting companies within Plymouth. In fact, the entire rebrand process has been

undertaken by companies within the local area, including Owen Jones Design and Red Rok. Dan loves to network and his support of local business has had a lot to do with Smeaton Homes’ prosperity. He sponsors a local football team and gets involved with plenty of community events on a regular basis. Dan’s commitment to his values is unwavering: “I’m passionate about ensuring that people get the best service and that they are paying for quality. I am also passionate about keeping local business going and would rather pay a little more to deal with a local supplier than to buy nationally.” The company places huge importance on customer care. Dan knows how important this is, especially in the sales and lettings industry: “I want people to see Smeaton Homes as the local agency that they know they can trust.” Smeaton Homes is one of only three estate agents in the city which are approved by the Government’s Buy With Confidence scheme. Dan believes in total transparency in his dealings with clients, giving them access to a property software package called Jupix. It enables landlords to view all data relating to the management of their property, including online statements, tenant details, certificate notification and more. For clients selling their property through Smeaton Homes they can access full details of viewings - including feedback marketing plans and transaction progress. Their books now boast 110 fully managed rental properties, an emerging block management arm and in recent months, Smeaton Homes has expanded into sales. To celebrate their new look, the company held a launch event in September. The whole event has been organised and catered for by local companies and Smeaton Homes welcomed existing landlords, tenants and house-hunters on the day. Peter Hartland, the recently appointed chief executive of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce was among the guests at the launch event.

BATHROOM MATTERS A Plymouth company supplying bathrooms and a wide range of home improvement products is celebrating its 10th year in business. Bathrooms by HomeSupply was launched in 2004 by directors Clem Lecointe and David Rees and operates a highly-successful online business as well as a retail operation. The company moved from its original location in Estover last year to high-profile premises at Faraday Mill Business Park where its 3,000 sq ft showroom features more than 30 bathroom displays showcasing products from many of the leading British and European bathroom, shower and tiling manufacturers. These include Merlyn Showering, Soltini, Keramag, Roper Rhodes, Hudson Reed, Reina, Imperial, Galassia, Bristan, Kudos and Vado. The online business is now a hugely successful business having grown significantly since its launch. Jim said: “Funnily enough when the plumbing supply company I was working for set up an account for Home Supply 10 years ago, Clem actually said ‘I’m sure we’ll work together one day.’ “I was delighted when Clem invited me to join the company and see plenty of opportunities to continue the success of Home Supply.
Jim aims to build business for Home Supply “I will be working hard to grow our consumer business and also see the opportunity to build fruitful relationships with developers and the trade in general.” A Developers Design Centre is currently under construction alongside the main showroom which will feature a number of bathroom displays designed to appeal to developers and builders. It will feature products from Porcelanosa, the leading Spanish ceramics and tiling company which also specialises in bathroom furniture and accessories. Jim said: “We have already had interest from a number of developers who are involved in projects such as apartment blocks and housing estates. When the new Developers Design Centre is open we will be holding trade evenings with the manufacturers’ reps present to discuss products and offer advice.”

Helen cooks up tasty treats at NEFF event
Home economist Helen Buxton-Smith cooks up some tasty delights at KF Kitchens’ e NEFF Cookind day
A highly-successful day of cooking demonstrations and advice was hosted by Plymouth-based KF Kitchens and Bedrooms. The NEFF Cooking Day at the company’s impressive Faraday Mill showroom proved to be popular with past and present customers of KF Kitchens - with many potential customers also enjoying the experience. KF Kitchens has the distinction of being the only NEFF Five Star Master Partner in Plymouth and regularly hosts the special cooking days to highlight the benefits of owning builtin NEFF appliances. KF’s 40,000 sq ft showroom features a full range of NEFF products, including single and double ovens, steam ovens,

microwaves, warming drawers, induction hobs, cooker hoods, dishwashers, fridges and fridge-freezers. NEFF home economist and demonstrator Helen BuxtonSmith spent six hours cooking a wide variety of dishes to illustrate the versatility and innovative features of NEFF ovens. NEFF’s unique CircoTherm technology allows sweet and savoury foods to be cooked at the same time without the intermingling of flavours for perfect batch baking results. It can also be set for bread-baking, defrosting, grilling, roasting and slow cooking. AquaAssist models bring two different strands of NEFF’s expertise neatly together. The idea was born from years of experience in built-in ovens combined with a thorough knowledge of steam cooking. The result is an ingenious method of food preparation, which adds humidity to the cooking process for perfect results, time after time. AquaAssist keeps meats tender and juicy, and is ideal for crisping up foods. As well as reducing cooking times, it helps retain food volume, colour and moisture. Nathan Damerell, director of KF Kitchens said: “We find that the NEFF Cooking Days which we organise are extremely popular with customers. This one was no exception. There were a number of customers who have only had kitchens installed by us recently and were keen to learn about all the amazing things possible when you are cooking with NEFF ovens. “There are so many features that it takes time and experience to know how to get the best out of these ovens. Helen does a fantastic job and her demonstrations are greatly appreciated.” Nathan said that the excellent relationship with NEFF had undoubtedly contributed to the continued success of KF Kitchens and Bedrooms. “We’ve had an excellent year and our order book is extremely healthy going into next year.”

Colin sings praises of KF Kitchens
KITCHEN MATTERS Nathan Damerell, director of KF Kitchens pictured with happy customer Colin Soper
Among the many customers of KF Kitchens who attended the NEFF Cooking Day was Colin Soper of Elburton. He has had a brand new kitchen installed by KF in the last few weeks and went along to learn more about how to get the best out of NEFF ovens. “I had a NEFF oven in my old kitchen, but the technology has moved on at a rapid pace. There are so many new features available and I’m looking forward to learning all about them.” Widower Colin knows a thing or two about cooking. He ran a highly-successful fish and chip shop in Dean Cross Road, Plymstock before retiring six years ago. “I decided I wanted to treat myself to a new kitchen and KF came highly recommended by friends. As soon as I walked into their showroom I fell in love with the first kitchen display I saw. “Nathan and the team could not have been more helpful. They turned my dream into reality. My old kitchen has been completely transformed with fantastic new built-in Oyster gloss units, NEFF built in oven, induction hob, microwave, warming drawer, fridge-freezer and dishwasher. “To round off the fabulous new look I also chose quartz worktops which were supplied and installed by Mayflower

Stone. I also had new lighting and flooring installed - it was a complete makeover. “KF Kitchens planned the project with almost military precision. All the different trades turned up exactly when they said they would and the whole process ran extremely smoothly. “I wanted the kitchen completed before the end of September because my daughter is visiting me from America - and the KF Kitchens team bent over backwards to achieve that. “I cannot recommend them highly enough for their professionalism, attention to detail and superb customer service,” said Colin.

Business booming for Plymstock family firm selling woodburners, stoves and fires A Plymstock-based family business launched 25 years ago is enjoying stacks of work - literally. Richard Simpson originally established Plymouth Chimney and Flue Specialists in 1989 providing installation of chimney linings, wood burners and fires as well as carrying out chimney repairs and re-builds. The business prospered and the sales of fires, stoves and wood burners continued to grow steadily. “We were selling so much from catalogues,” said Richard, “that we decided to open a showroom in Plymstock Road.” At the same time Richard changed the name of the

business to South West Fires and Flues to better reflect the extensive range of products and services that it offered. That was five years ago - and since then the business has seen a 400 per cent increase in its turnover. “Before we opened the showroom it was very much a typical 9 to 5 business - now we’re so busy that it’s a seven days a week operation,” he added. “The business is really thriving at the moment.” Richard’s partner Sue, two sons Luke and Alex, his daughter Keira and daughter-in-law Michaela are now all involved in the burgeoning business. Richard is a fully qualified Gas Safe and HETAS approved engineer as are his sons Luke and Alex who each head up a three-strong team of fitters. Sue and Michaela share showroom, admin and office functions while Keira also helps out in the showroom whenever she can. The company carries out installations and chimney repairs across much of the South West, particularly Devon, Cornwall and Somerset - although nearly two thirds of its work is in the Plymouth area. Richard said that sales of wood burners and clean burn stoves had seen dramatic growth in recent years, mainly because of the big increases in energy costs and also growing concern for green issues. “Most customers come to us because they want to save on their energy and gas bills - which is why wood burners are so popular. Burning wood is much more efficient than gas or electricity: wood burners are roughly four times as efficient as traditional open fires. “More and more people are concerned about energy efficiency these days, so there has been a big swing towards green and environmentally friendly products as well.” South West Fires & Flues offer a free, no obligation site survey and estimate for the supply and installation of a full range of fires, flues, fireplaces and chimney liners.
The company is approved by the Buy With Confidence, a scheme operated by Trading Standards which requires the highest standards of customer service and satisfaction. The extensive Plymstock showroom features displays of wood burners, stoves, fires, fireplaces and accessories from some of the top names in the market. Brands available include Stovax, Gazco, Aga, Barbas, Bell Fires, Paragon, Flavel and Dimplex, to name just a few. The company also supplies coal, logs and other fuels. There are many working displays in the showroom, providing customers with the opportunity to see how effective and efficient the fires and wood burners are. A new showroom extension featuring the latest and most sophisticated products will be opening in the near future. Richard said that the repair and reconstruction of chimney stacks remains an important part of the business. “The recent storms and extreme wet weather has led to a big increase in repairs and rebuilds of chimney stacks which is keeping our teams very busy.”

LEGAL MATTERS
Dealing with disputes We have all encountered horror stories of builders not doing work satisfactorily or clients who will not pay for the hard work you have done. We all hope that those horror stories are fiction that you read about that but the reality is that disputes or conflicts can arise at any time. A recent study by Which? indicates that individuals have been involved in 2.5 million disputes with builders in the last three years. Generally, disputes will be resolved quickly by both parties taking a sensible approach and agreeing a compromise between themselves but sometimes individuals need a bit of extra help to resolve matters and it can be difficult to know where to turn when you find yourself in that situation. At Thompson & Jackson we aim to help clients (both individuals and businesses) to avoid disputes or, where that is
not possible, to resolve them at an early stage. We recognise that it can be incredibly distressing when you find yourself in any form of a dispute and often the last thing you want to do is exacerbate an already difficult situation by becoming embroiled in contentious and protracted litigation with escalating legal costs on top. Instead, we will explore the legal rights and remedies available whilst also focussing on the practical steps that will achieve the best possible outcome for you. If you are an individual who has commissioned a major building project or renovation at home, we recognise that it can be incredibly disappointing and upsetting where that work is not completed or not completed to a safe and satisfactory standard. Where remedial works are required or you believe you might be entitled to compensation, we can discuss the options available to you. We always endeavour to give you accurate estimates of the legal By costs that may be involved at an Lauren Taylor early stage to enable you to make of Thompson an informed decision about how you & Jackson Solicitors want to approach matters. If you are a business, we know that you need to focus your efforts on running the business which often leaves little time to deal with clients who will refuse to pay for the work done. We can help you take action to recover outstanding invoices and also assist you in taking court action where clients still refuse to pay. Where you find yourself involved in a dispute with a client, supplier or other professional body, we can explore it with you and help you to achieve a swift resolution whilst endeavouring to ensure that your professional relationships are maintained. If you are an individual who is unhappy with work that has been done or a builder/contractor who needs help dealing with a complaint from a client or another professional body and would like to get in touch for a chat then please contact me, Lauren Sayer on 01752 665037 or lauren@ thompsonandjackson.co.uk. If I think we can help, I will invite you to come in and see me for an appointment.

FASHION MATTERS With Christmas and the party season fast approaching, it’s time for ladies to start thinking about ball gowns and evening wear. Jazz Boltwood, assistant manager at Bee Bee Gowns in Plymouth not only modelled some of the latest styles available at their West Park shop for this feature, but also talked about the popular evening wear trends in 2014. Jazz said: “As far as colours are concerned regal jewel tones are very popular at present with lots of blacks and reds and gold metallics. Vintage styles and the ‘old Hollywood’ look are definitely back in fashion right now. “The most important thing though, is not to follow fashion trends, but to find a dress that matches your own image and body shape. “Choosing the colour that suits you and your skin tones is vitally important. It’s also important to choose a dress that hides any flaws and emphasises your best body features. “Bev Saunders, the proprietor here at Bee Bee Gowns has many years experience in selecting and stocking exclusive designer dresses that are not only limited editions, but also offer incredible value for money at prices lower than most high street shops. “We have a fantastic range of dresses to choose from to suit all tastes and budgets - and with our autumn sale now in full swing there are dresses available for as little as £99. We have dresses on the rail from size 2 right up to size 30, so we will certainly be able to help find the right ball gown or evening wear to suit any customer.” Jazz said that plunging backs and button-backs were a particularly prominent feature this year, while plunging V necklines were also in trend. “Deep cuts will suit if you don’t have any doubt about the beauty of the open parts of your body,” she added. Jewellery and accessories are important considerations in achieving the sparkling look for Christmas and party time and Bee Bee Gowns has an extensive selection to complement the choice of evening dress or ball gown.

RESEARCH MATTERS What do babies and children know about the different accents they hear?
By Samantha
Think of your friends, family members, colleagues and neighbours and it is very likely you know at least one or more people who speak with an accent, whether this is a UK accent – from Newcastle or Wales for example, or a foreign accent – because they are originally from France or Spain. Even though some of these accents can be quite different from your own, as an adult you very quickly and easily adapt to the accent of whomever you are speaking so that you can successfully interact and converse with them. But what about children? In particular toddlers who are still learning words and have had much less experience with different accents. Here at the Babylab in Plymouth University this is one of the questions we have been asking. We compared toddlers aged 20 months used to hearing different accents, because one or both of their parents do not have a South West accent, with same age toddlers who hear mainly the South West accent from mum and dad.

Talking about accents We welcomed lots of families who answered questions about their accents while the toddlers got to see some pictures on a big screen and got a gift, balloon, and certificate for helping us. With the help of all of these families we are learning new and exciting things about the effect of hearing at least two accents on toddlers’ recognition of words they know. The way we find this out is by showing toddlers pictures of two objects on our TV screen and then naming one of them. If toddlers know this word and recognise it then they will look to this picture after hearing its name. This very simple method tells us lots about what children know and we can change how the words are said to find out even more. Sometimes we mispronounce the words and say ‘gat’ instead of ‘cat’, or we play words in a different accent. We have discovered that toddlers hearing more than one accent regularly will look at a picture of a cat when it is paired with a cow after we say ‘gat’, whereas toddlers who hear only one accent do not look at either picture! This is the first time this has been shown and we think this suggests that toddlers hearing more than one accent have learnt to be flexible about the way words can be said, looking at the picture that most closely matches the word. When the cat is paired with an artichoke (a word toddlers don’t know) they do not look at either picture, meaning that they can hear that the word ‘gat’ is different from ‘cat’. Our next step was to look at what toddlers do when the words they are hearing are said in an accented way. We chose to look at something called rhoticity, when the ‘r’ sound in words such as ‘farm’ is very evident, something
quite common in the South West accent (and Scottish among others). Using the same method described above, with pairs of pictures and a single word, we found that all children living in Plymouth prefer rhotic words – where the ‘r’ is very distinct – even if they hear both types of pronunciation from their parents. This was very surprising as we expected toddlers hearing both to look at the picture after both pronunciations, however, this instead seems to suggest that toddlers idea about how words should sound is linked to how they sound in the community (in this case Plymouth) rather than at home. Of course, this is not the end of this line of research and we have many more studies running in the Babylab trying to find out more about these effects of accents in young children (around 20 months) as well as looking at older children’s (three and four years) social judgements of accented speakers. Other areas of research in the Babylab include studies looking at bilingual language development in two year olds where we invite parents and children to take part in a study in the Babylab and also complete a series of online questionnaires. We are also interested in whether babies can use information from speech to judge the size of a person at six and 12 months.

Crab apples are superb little trees with stunning pink/red buds that open into mostly white blossom in the spring and mature into little red or yellow fruit in the autumn. It is ideal for any small garden and looks truly spectacular at this time of year. The spring blossom is outstanding and rivals that of the ornamental cherries. The small fruits look great and can last on the branches for months. There is also the added advantage of the beautiful autumn foliage colour. It prefers a sunny position and tolerates most soil types. The best varieties to go for are Malus Red Sentinel, John Downie, and Golden Gem and they can reach a height of about 3-4m (10ft to 12ft) with a spead of 2-3m (6ft to 10ft). For evergreen foliage Heavenly Bamboo Malus Red Sentinel (Nandina domestica) is hard to beat for autumn colouring. The shrub Fiona Newton pictured at one of the tree plantations retains its leaves all year, but in autumn it transforms its bright green leaves and turns a vibrant reddish-purple. The brilliant foliage colour often remains throughout the winter. Nandina also produce clusters of small white flowers that are followed by attractive bunches of red berries in late summer. There are two new varieties that we have, both excellent for pots as they have a nice compact habit. These are Nandina ‘Obsessed’ and ‘Gulfstream. They are best grown in full sun to partial shade in moist but well drained soil and have a height and spread of approximately 1-1.5m (3ft to 5ft).
