November sees the start of Plymouth’s festive celebrations really getting under way. The popular ice rink in the Piazza is already up and running (or should that be skating!) while the big Christmas lights switch-on takes place on Thursday November 13. It’s a sparkling occasion which always attracts thousands of visitors to the city centre. A week later the Christmas Market will open with a host of stalls offering some fantastic Christmas gifts and goods. It finishes on Sunday December 14 - a little earlier than usual so make sure you get down to the city centre while the market is there. Down in the Barbican and Sutton Harbour Christmas celebrations will be starting on Thursday November 27 with their own festive illuminations being switched on. Christmas in the West End starts from Friday November 28 and the Plymouth City Market will be extending its opening hours. It will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays and until 8pm on Thursdays. You can read more about the Christmas plans in our special festive feature which starts on page 31. Elsewhere in this issue we’re delighted to introduce a new columnist. Hair and beauty expert Rosie Finnigan of the recently opened Salon X will be writing a regular feature with tips and advice on make-up, hairstyles and other beauty matters. You will find her first contribution on page 6. If you’re a homeowner - which most of our readers are - you will definitely be interested in the latest property update from our expert columnist Darren Lawson of leading city estate agents Mansbridge & Balment. You will find his feature on pages 54 and 55. We’ve got the usual big What’s On guide and many other interesting features too. Enjoy!

BEAUTY MATTERS

Great value for make-up Rosie Finnigan, creative director at Salon X, has teamed up with the Plymouth Magazine to write a monthly hair, makeup and beauty feature. Having trained as a hairdresser in Devon, Rosie moved away for a few years to work in London and Sydney before deciding to return to the South West in 2012. Whilst working in Covent Garden she had the good fortune to perfect her skills alongside some of the best hairdressers in the industry. In Sydney she decided to add another string to her bow and trained as a professional makeup artist at one of Australia’s most prestigious makeup academies. In July this year along with her business partner, Paul Kennedy, she opened Salon X in North Down Road, Beacon Park. Rosie’s passion for hair, make-up and beauty is shown through her work and she loves nothing more than to share her passion and knowledge with others.

Rosie writes: In this first column for the Plymouth Magazine I thought I would look at products which really work and are also good value for money. I find that the women I meet often believe that you can only buy good quality make-up products from department store counters where sales assistants encourage us to buy beautifully packaged, expensive products. The trouble is as desirable as these products are we can’t always afford them and what’s more, they sometimes aren’t superior to makeup you could buy in a supermarket or high street pharmacy. For this article I have tried and tested all ranges of make-up products and some of the items have found their way into my professional kit. A good every day make-up kit should consist of six things: foundation, pressed or loose powder, eye shadow, mascara, eyebrow pencil and lipstick. Here are some of my supermarket and pharmacy make-up top tips: Loreal Illuminati Magique Foundation £10.99 I adore this foundation. I have used designer brand foundations before but this one always comes up trumps. It is great for any age and all skin types. The velvety texture means that the product sits evenly on the skin. It’s very pliable which is great if you need a quick top up. I use two pumps for a full face and apply with a microfibre makeup brush. Barbara Daly Light Illusion Powder Highlighter (Tesco) £7.00 With a fine texture and delicate colour, light illusion powder adds a subtle gleam to any

area of the face or body to give you a healthy glow. Its neat packaging means that it is perfect for popping in a handbag ready for touch ups on the go. Barbara Daly Long Wear Eyeshadow Bronze/Gold (Tesco) £6.75 I recommend this product to everyone and use it on 90% of my clients. With a gorgeous bronze tone that suits all eye colours and skin tones neatly presented in a handy stylo pen. It goes on smoothly without fear of the product dropping onto your cheeks and is easily blended for a flawless finish. Max Factor 2000 Calorie Dramatic Volume Mascara £7.99 I am always trying out new mascaras but time after time I find myself coming back to this product. It is easy to apply and never looks too heavy. I find that I can even apply more during the day without it clogging up my eyelashes. The best part is that it’s incredibly easy to remove at the end of the day Rimmel Eyebrow Pencil £2.99 One of these would make it into my desert island survival kit! I have used many top brand eyebrow pencils but this one is up there with the best. The pencils come in three colour shades, hazel, dark brown and black brown. The waxy texture is great for creating natural looking hair strokes which last all day long. A quick tip is to always sharpen the pencil before use so that you get perfectly defined lines. Barry M Lip Paint £4.49 These neat lip paints are really good fun as they come in a wide range of colours and are easy to apply over the lips leaving a burst of colour. I have found that they last well, especially if you take a little extra time to apply with a lip brush to achieve a more defined edge. Life is back to normal again! Retired nurse Janet Parfitt had been struggling with severe pain in her left foot for a number of months.

Solutions I have been able to enjoy all those things again.” Janet, who started nursing at the age of 17, spent many years as a practice nurse with GP surgeries and currently works as a private home care worker.

As a keen walker Janet was increasingly concerned about her mobility as the pain intensified. “It was a burning pain which was keeping me awake at night and made walking very painful,” said Janet.

“Working in the health sector has taught me that there are two parts of the body that should be looked after properly: your feet and your teeth and that has always been my philosophy.

Her GP referred her to a special podiatry clinic, but the pain worsened as she waited for an appointment to come through. Janet, who lives in Bere Alston, said: “It was getting to the point that my mobility was being seriously affected and I just couldn’t wait until it became a totally chronic situation.

Janet Parfitt pictured with Andrew Scowcroft of Foot Solutions

“I decided to take matters in my own hands and visited Foot Solutions in Royal Parade. I had heard a lot about their work and I’m so glad I went there.

Janet was supplied with custom made orthotic arch supports and has since purchased a number of pairs of shoes from Foot Solutions.

“As a health professional myself I was so impressed with the co-ordinated treatment and advice they gave me.

“When I went into the store for the first time, on a scale of one to ten, the pain was definitely an eight, which was so debilitating. I’m not totally pain-free now, but it has come down to no more than two.

“They carried out what they call a ‘Foot Assessment’ which confirmed I had a fallen arch in my left foot, which was the cause of the problem.”

“I still have to stand on my feet a lot, as I did when I was nursing. Thanks to Foot Solutions I can carry on my life as normal. “I was so impressed with their professionalism - I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who is suffering with foot pain.” Visit Foot Solutions at 34 Royal Parade, Plymouth PL1 1DU or call 01752 222660

WOMEN AT WORK A young singer from Plymouth is using her skills to enrich the lives of older people and those affected by dementia and physical disability. When Katie Wheeler from Plympton headed to Brighton University three years ago to study Dance and Theatre Arts she had a clear vision of her career ahead; it was to be an actor’s life for her and the stage was where she wanted to be. But her experiences at university and a spell of working with people with disabilities changed her focus completely: “I learnt about using dance as therapy to help elderly people and people with disabilities and it changed my perception,” said Katie. “Rather than doing this for ‘me’ reasons I decided I wanted to help other people.” Plymouth-born Katie first caught the performance bug as a student at Hele’s School in Plympton: “I loved drama when I was at school and when I successfully auditioned for a place with Attik Youth Dance I decided that I wanted this to be more than just a hobby; it was a life choice.” It was a two-week work experience placement back at Attik Dance in Plymouth in her second year at university that was the real turning point for Katie: “I danced with disabled people and it was so enriching. The therapeutic benefits were lovely to see.” Katie, 22, graduated this summer and waltzed straight into her new job in her home city. She has joined the South West-based Cat’s Whiskers Tea Dance Company and puts on vintage tea dances at residential care homes. The songs range from war-time songs to Elvis – with

Katie hits the her vintage lots in between – and the residents are encouraged to dance in their chairs and sing along with the help of song sheets. The music is followed by afternoon tea, delivered in sumptuous style by Katie, using vintage crockery. During tea, reminiscence items and memorabilia dating back decades is passed around to encourage residents to share memories and stories. As part of her training, Katie has just completed a course on working with people with dementia and learned communication skills for talking to people affected by memory loss. “The tea dances engage people as much as possible,” said Katie. “It’s important that their unique identities and their memories are nourished.” Katie’s first tea dance was at Dewi-Sant Care Home in Eggbuckland Road in October – and she says she had as much fun as the residents: “It’s just so rewarding. I love making people smile and seeing people being happy. It was also nice to hear them say that they’d enjoyed themselves. “They joined in with the singing and

right note with tea dances started to talk about their memories. “One lady who is now in her 90s talked about growing up in Newquay and swimming in the sea every morning during the summer, and the old recipe book we passed around brought back memories of the giant pasties her father would make for the family when she was a young girl. “That sparked a conversation about their favourite foods when they were children and the food smells they could remember.” Cat’s Whiskers Tea Dance Company was set up by Bathbased Harriet Pocock, who was this year named in the Independent on Sunday’s ‘Happy List’ for her work in bringing happiness into people’s lives. Now that’s something Katie can relate to: “This is just the start for me and I’m looking forward to bringing the tea dances into homes across Plymouth.”

CLEANING MATTERS

A business with real sparkle

A Plymouth business launched in May this year is literally bringing a sparkle to homes in the city and surrounding area. Husband and wife team Stuart and Gail May from Devonport purchased the Myhome Residental Cleaning franchise for Plymouth in May - and have quickly established a reputation for high quality work and service. Myhome is one of the country’s leading premium residential cleaning franchise operations, having been established more than 10 years ago and now operating in 14 locations up and down the country. Stuart and Gail, who are both in their 40s, had been looking for the opportunity to work together on a new business and decided that a franchise was the best way forward. Stuart said: “We looked at a variety of franchise businesses and felt that a cleaning franchise offered us the best chance of growing a successful business over the next 20 years.” According to recent research in the UK residential cleaning is one of the fastest growing market sectors, with 2.7 million households spending about £11 billion in the UK. A report published by the Cleaning and Support Services Association in April 2012 said that the cleaning industry is driving economic growth and employment at a faster rate than other industries, including the hospitality and retail sectors. Stuart added: “There are a number of cleaning franchise businesses available - but Myhome stood head and shoulders above the rest because of their whole approach to the service provided.” Gail added: “We attended an intensive four day training course which not only explained the Myhome approach to residential cleaning, but also gave us a lot of advice on sales and marketing, staff recruitment and so on. “As Stu and I had no previous knowledge on setting up and running a business, the whole process was invaluable to us. We have found that the Myhome franchisors Niall Power and Gurmukh Randhawa as well as the whole Myhome team have been brilliant in supporting our new venture. “We also know that going forward we will get all the help and assistance needed to continue to grow our business.” Myhome use a tri-colour cleaning system originally developed by Unilever, The vetted Myhome Cleaning teams are full time employees who are trained in this system as well as being fully insured giving our customers peace of mind knowing they they will get a consistent level of service. Stuart said: “Myhome provide us with all the cleaning equipment and materials, which are colour-coded according Stuart May...chance to run their own business

to the type of room being cleaned. This provides the best hygienic results and avoids any risk of cross-contamination.” Myhome provide regular cleaning services on a weekly, fortnightly and monthly basis as well as one-off deep spring cleans and also pre-sale and end of tenancy cleans. They also offer a laundry service and will introduce carpet and fabric cleaning in the future. Stuart and Gail have employed two cleaners and with the business now growing rapidly are in the process of recruiting a third. “We launched in May and after a busy start, things went a little quiet in the summer,” said Gail. “However, since the beginning of September the business has really taken off.” They have customers all over Plymouth as well as in outlying areas, such as Saltash, Wembury and Princetown. Stuart and Gail only moved to Plymouth three years ago, but quickly fell in love with the area. They have three young children and enjoy the combination of city life, with the benefit of nearby beaches and moors. Life could have been so different for former financial adviser Stuart, who was seriously injured in a car accident in 1999. He spent six months recovering from the accident and has lost the use of his left arm because of the injuries he sustained. “The injury gave me the determination in life to succeed - a near brush with death is a very sobering thought and you realise that you only live once,” said Stuart. He met Gail just under 10 years ago when she interviewed him for a job with a telecommunications company in North Yorkshire. Gail was Stuart’s boss at the time and they became more than just colleagues when they became a couple in 2008. A change of job brought the couple to Plymouth in 2011 and they were married the following year. “We have had an eventful few years, but as a family were are happily settled in Plymouth now. The children are growing up and making lots of friends in their new school. We live in a nice neighbourhood and our business is growing day by day,” said Gail. With the business growing and with Stuart’s disability, the couple are keen to get involved in a local charity, donating part of their profits to a worthy cause. Stuart added: “We would love to hear from local people with their ideas on a suitable charity to support.”

FOOD MATTERS Directors and staff at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel are celebrating an outstanding rating from the AA which has ranked it as the top three star hotel in the city. And it was a double success with the hotel’s elegant restaurant securing a coveted AA Rosette for the 14th year in succession. It is the only AA Rosette hotel restaurant in the city. Hotel director Jon Morcom said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the latest AA ratings - it is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of all the staff here. The AA use a complex scoring system which covers areas such as cleanliness, hospitality, service, bedrooms, bathrooms, public areas and food and beverages. “We achieved our highest ever score with a mark of 81 per cent out of a possible 100 per cent and received some very positive feedback from the AA inspector.” The inspector, Debbie Williams, commented in her report: “It was a pleasure to return to the Duke of Cornwall Hotel where the same impressive standards of quality and comfort continue to be offered. The attractive building and setting create a very good first impression on arrival and this continues inside where all areas are very well presented. “The bar and restaurant provide good space for guests to relax and both are furnished and decorated to a high standard. The remaining newly refurnished bedrooms and bathrooms complement the stylish decor and smart furniture, combining to highlight the many original features of this fine historic building. “In terms of cleanliness, all aspects of the property were diligently clean.” Jon added: “The AA standard is a well-respected industry measure of hotels and catering establishments and provides an important benchmark for guests and visitors.” As part of the hotel’s ongoing investment in quality dining, four members of the kitchen brigade have recently attended AA Rosette Academy training workshops in London. The hotel’s continuing programme of investment in 2014 included a complete re-design and makeover for seven bedrooms, installation of a new energy-efficient boiler and a major upgrade to the hotel’s impressive ballroom. Director Walter Combstock said: “All our bedrooms are uniquely individual, many with original features which have been brought right up to date. We endeavour to introduce the latest styles and fittings whenever we upgrade a bedroom. For example we are now installing electrical sockets with builtin USB points which enable guests to recharge their laptops, smartphones and tablets.” The AA rating success came just a few days after the Duke of Cornwall received a Gold Award in the hotel and guest house section of the Plymouth in Bloom competition. It was the fourth year in a row that the hotel had secured the coveted Gold Award. The hotel is now eagerly awaiting the outcome of the latest Green Tourism assessment. The hotel currently has a silver rating and is pushing to improve this to the gold standard. Members of Green Tourism are assessed by a qualified grading advisor against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas, such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and more. Jon said: “As an environmentally sensitive business we are always looking at ways of reducing our carbon footprint and recycling products wherever we can. The installation of

PLANNING AHEAD TO AVOID STRESS Over 60 years old? When we find we are in our 60s 70s or older we start to worry about what would happen if we had to go into a care home, or if we lost the ability to deal with our own affairs. The answer is to think ahead and take action as soon as possible to avoid the stress on yourself and your family. A Lasting Power of Attorney should be taken out as early as possible and registered with The Office of the Public Guardian to give people you trust the legal authority to deal with your financial affairs and health and welfare issues if you are no longer able to deal with these things yourself. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney your family has no legal right to act for you. A Home Protection Trust should

also be considered early before it is too late. Putting your home into Trust for your family, or whoever you wish to inherit will take a lot of stress away from them at a later date. The reason being that instead of having to apply for probate, and wait months before they can deal with your property after you have gone, a property in Trust does not need probate and can be dealt with immediately by those left behind. This can also save substantial amounts of money in professional probate fees. As a bonus your property will also be protected against all unforeseen eventualities. And please have your Will checked. Does it need updating? Once all these things are done most people feel a really huge sense of relief.

A prestigious World War One concert in aid of the charity War Child is taking place in November. Organised by Plymouth-based Jeanie Moore the concert is entitled ‘We Will Remember’ and takes place on Sunday November 23 at 4pm in the Great Hall at Dartington, near Totnes. The charity event will feature the Chamber Ensemble of London, who have given dozens of classical concerts and include some of the country’s finest string players. The Ensemble will perform ‘No Man’s Land’, a new suite for double bass and string orchestra by the West Country composer Clive Jenkins. The work includes readings of English, French, German and Russian poetry from the Great War. The soloist is Chris West co-principal bass player with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and for many years previously the solo double bass player with the Guildhall Strings. He is also professor of double bass at Trinity College of Music, London. He plays on a double bass made by Giovanni Battista Ceruti in Cremona in the 18th century. The work was commissioned by concert organiser Jeanie Moore MVO on behalf of Gard & Co Solicitors as a fundraiser for WAR child. The concert will include works by composers who fought in the war – Vaughan Williams, Hindemith and Kreisler – as well as lighter music from the period with Ivor Novello and Irving Berlin prominently featured. Research by the Ensemble’s director, violinist Peter Fisher, has come up with a salon piece, ‘Angels of Mons’ by Sydney C Baldock. Battlefield, homefront. peace, war and aftermath are all reflected in this very varied programme entitled ‘We Will Remember’.

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra will be performing a feast of Russian masterpieces in Plymouth and Liskeard in November. The orchestra’s latest concerts are Sunday November 16 at 5.30pm at the Public Hall, Liskeard and on Wednesday November19 at Plymouth Guildhall at 7.30pm. This Russian extravaganza features works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Liadov and Mussorgsky. Cellist Guy Johnston joins the orchestra in Plymouth for the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich, probably the most popular 20th century cello concerto and one of the most challenging, originally written for Mstislav Rostropovich in 1959. Having won the BBC Young Musician of the Year title, Johnston has gone on to perform concertos with orchestras around the world. ‘Johnston has already forged a place as one of the country’s most promising and distinctive cellists.’ - The Strad. In Liskeard, Bulgarian cellist Michael Petrov performs the Shostakovich. Reviewed earlier this year: ‘At his recent performance of Shostakovich’s 1st Cello Concerto at the Barbican, Petrov dominated the orchestra effortlessly.’ – The Daily Telegraph, Ivan Hewett, June 2014. Tchaikovsky’s ever popular 1812 Overture opens the concert, which also includes the Dance of the Knights, from Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev, perhaps best known as the signature tune for the BBCs The Apprentice. Liadov’s Enchanted Lake provides a moment of mystical serenity before the final work in the concert -Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The loss of an artist friend Hartmann, had a deep effect on the composer and an exhibition of Hartmann’s pictures inspired this work, originally

composed for piano. Maurice Ravel’s colourful and dynamic orchestral arrangement has ensured the work’s enduring popularity. The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longestestablished orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 138 years. The orchestra attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor and Jennifer Pike amongst the most recent performers to play with the orchestra.

Plymouth love Christmas!

With less than a month until the Christmas Festival begins, Plymouth is putting plans in place to make this the best shopping experience in the South West. Working in partnership with Drake Circus the Plymouth City Centre Company is making Plymouth the place to be this Christmas. Visitors to the city will be able to shop for high-end brands, view the Christmas lights, visit the Christmas market, have their pictures taken inside a snow globe and visit Santa! The festival and Christmas celebrations will begin on Thursday 13 November with the annual Christmas light switch-on. Singer and Panto star, Chico, and British R&B band, Damage, have been confirmed as the special guests this year, and more will be announced soon. Taking place on Thursday November 13 outside Drake Circus from 4pm, with entertainment provided by Heart, visitors will be able to see the city centre transform with many new lighting features. The new features will replace old and outdated lights on Cornwall Street and New George Street and are expected to bring a more modern feel to Christmas. Chico, most commonly known for being part of the popular TV show, X Factor, in 2005, is playing Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk – this year’s panto at the Plymouth Theatre Royal. He said: “I’m so excited to be helping turn on the Christmas lights in Plymouth this year. Everyone here seems so friendly and it’ll be great to see many people getting into the Christmas spirit. The lights always give that extra special feeling and you know once they’re on Christmas really is on its way. I hope to see lots of people there on the 13th – we’re sure to have a Christmassy Chico time.” Joining Chico will be British R&B boy band Damage, who achieved success in the 1990s with eleven hit singles including Forever, Love Guaranteed and Ghetto Romance. Once the lights are turned on the City Centre will be buzzing with Christmas cheer. Stiltskin Creative Arts and Theatre Company and local school children will walk through the city in

a lantern parade, some carrying giant and animated lanterns. The parade will start and end at the Plymouth Guildhall and they will walk past many Christmas features in the city centre including a real Christmas tree and outdoor ice rink on the Piazza, Santa’s Grotto, operated by Ice Angels, popular snow globe and lit up bubble tree at Place de Brest. Stefan Krause, City Centre manager, said: “The Christmas Festival is going to be bigger and better than ever before. We are working closely with Drake Circus to shout about the excellent diverse range of shops we have here, from Hobbs to Pandora and Superdry to Bench – not to mention all of the toy shops! “We have made some significant improvements with the illuminations and we will be bringing back the popular outdoor ice rink, snow globe and artificial snow. “Plymouth is a fantastic city that loves Christmas. With so much going on, you must come and see for yourself.” Market Place Europe, the UK’s operator in special event markets, is providing the Christmas Market. Located from the big screen on the Piazza to the bubble tree in the Place de Brest Garden, the market will be in place from Thursday November 20 until Sunday December 14. The Barbican and Sutton Harbour are also celebrating the countdown to Christmas with their own illuminations being turned on during the evening of the Thursday November 27. From 6pm there will be a carol service next to the ‘Mayflower’ Christmas tree, being positioned on the Parade in the Barbican. People of all ages will be spreading the cheer as children from schools and students from Plymouth University will be singing a number of hymns. Christmas in the West End starts from Friday November 28 and the Plymouth City Market will be extending their opening hours. It will be open 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays and until 8pm on Thursdays. If that’s not enough, there will also be a Victorian themed Christmas at the Royal William Yard on Sunday December 7. www.cornerstonevision.com

Pennywell supplies the costumes and organises the whole direction, giving every child (and adult) the opportunity to dress up and star in the performance. They even manage to make sure the snow falls at the end of each performance. There really is a host of heavenly angels and many shepherds watching their sheep. Lots of voices are needed for the singing of Little Donkey, While Shepherds Watched and Away in a Manger to name a few. After the play, every child meets Santa in his grotto and receives a present. A Christmas film is showing in the Farmyard Theatre between performances and seasonal refreshments of warm mince pies and mulled wine for the

Until November 29 PLYMOUTH’S GREAT WAR: THREE TOWNS UNITED IN CONFLICT Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery An exhibition that gives a unique overview of the First World War from a Plymouth perspective. ‘Plymouth’s Great War’ features the story of the amalgamation of the Three Towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse in 1914; reflecting on them as home to the Royal Navy, Army Garrisons, Royal Marines and Royal Naval Air Service. It will also look at the impact of the war on local people’s lives – touching on recruitment, conscription, the fighting, the cost, the aftermath and the ‘home front’. The exhibition features items, images and documents from the city’s arts, heritage and archive collections. This is not just a standard review of the First World War from start to finish. It’s the story of Plymouth and Plymothians from 1914 to 1918. Until Dec 13 WHITEHORSE HILL: A PREHISTORIC DARTMOOR DISCOVERY Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery This fascinating exhibition will see some amazing Bronze Age finds from a remote spot on Dartmoor go on public display for the first time. The finds are around 4,000 years old and were discovered within a stone chest burial (a cist) at Whitehorse Hill. This is the most outstanding site to have been excavated locally in over 100 years. The items that were discovered in the cist are of national and international importance and provide one of the best glimpses into life in Bronze Age Southern England that academics and scientists have ever had. This is a partnership exhibition between

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA). Until Dec 13 WALK ON: FROM RICHARD LONG TO JANET CARDIFF 40 YEARS OF ART WALKING This is the first touring exhibition to examine the many varied ways that artists since the 1960s have undertaken the universal act of taking a walk as a means to create new art. ‘Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff – 40 Years of Art Walking’ gives an insight into the recent art practice of nearly 40 artists. Several are internationally acclaimed. Others are bright new talents. All of them have made new work simply by taking a journey on foot. Regardless of the landscape or location, during the last four decades these ‘explorers’ have made their mark. ‘Walk On’ shows that from land art to conceptual art and from street photography to film, much of the important art of our time has been created through an act of walking. This is a partnership exhibition between Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University; Plymouth Arts Centre; Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art. From Dec 13 IN THE FRAME: PLYMOUTH’S PORTRAITS REVEALED Visit an exhibition that delves more deeply into Plymouth’s portraits and presents new research into some of the characters in the collection. ‘In the Frame’ will feature a new acquisition - an early self-portrait by Plympton-born 18th century artist, Sir Joshua Reynolds. This work will be shown alongside other paintings of artists including self-portraits by James Northcote and Edward Opie.

TRAVEL MATTERS I am very fortunate to have travelled the world extensively over the years, but still have many places that I want to visit.

Feeling on top of the world!

So I get excited when my some of my clients travel to one of those places. This month Tim and Teresa have kindly let me share their recent experience of a cruise through the Panama Canal finishing in Peru and visiting one of the Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. Tim and Teresa write: “We left Fort Lauderdale, sailing south on the Ms Rotterdam to our first stop on the beautiful sandy beaches of the Bahamian island of Half Moon Cay. “Our next day was at sea, sailing between Cuba and Haiti towards Columbia. Santa Marta was a typical colonial town in the foothill of the Sierra Nevada. “Next morning we sailed through By Travel hundreds of tiny islands, part of the Expert Anthony Goord Panamanian San Blas archipelago. We were greeted like Christopher Columbus by local people and their families in their hollowed out log canoes. We decided to take an excursion which took us by local boat to one of the isolated islands and experience the idyllic haven of a typical deserted Caribbean island. “The following day we arrived in the green and verdant country of Costa Rica. Through the banana and pineapple plantations via coach, train and boat to the meandering Toruguero canals where there was an abundance of wildlife including howler monkeys and tree climbing sloths. “Early the next morning was the highlight of our cruise as we began the transit of the Panama Canal. What a feat of early 20th century engineering and quite a spectacle to see the gigantic workings of the new wider locks on the Pacific side. Panama itself is very diverse with opportunities to visit the ancient, colonial and modern centres of the city. “Another day saw us cross the equator, celebrated on board ship by a show with the visit of Neptune and his entourage and the transformation ceremony of the Pollywogs to Shellbacks. It was a great spectacle to watch. “North Peru was our next stop in the coastal city of Trugillo Tim and Teresa pictured at Machu Picchu the containing fantastic little known archaeological sites on a par 15th century Inca site built 8,000 ft up in the with Egypt. the Sacred Valley with an accompaniment of traditional live music and alpacas roaming the beautiful gardens. The final destination that day was Ollantaytambo, a town with a huge Inca fortress carved into the rock. This gave us a taster of the spectacle to come. “After an overnight stay we joined the train for a picturesque journey following the river valley to Aguas Calientes at the foot of the trail. We did this trip the easy way by bus up the switch back road to the entrance of our final destination, Machu Picchu! Nothing can prepare you for the spectacle of this superb historic settlement. You just marvel at the craftsmanship of the construction, the precision of the block work and the pure beauty of this iconic site. “The question is, how on earth did these ancient people with no modern technology build such a phenomenal city in the clouds? We were able to spend a long time over the two days exploring and drinking in this wonderful place. The pinnacle of what proved to be a once in a lifetime holiday. “As we are a couple in our 60s it shows that if you are reasonably fit, this can be a trip for all. You are never too old to experience the wonders of the world and this holiday was an experience that we’ll never forget.” Tim & Teresa www.cornerstonevision.com

The Plymouth Magazine November 2014

What is it? Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain under the foot near the heel bone. It is very common and thought to affect around 10 per cent of all people at some point in their life. It is more common in women and also in the 40-60 year old age group. It is also seen in athletes and people involved in activity/exercise at times. The plantar fascia is a thick strong band of tissue that stretches from your heel bone to the mid foot bones. It provides support to the arch of the foot and also works as a shock-absorber in the foot. What causes it? Usually it is caused by repeated small injuries to the plantar fascia tissue. It can develop when people are standing on their feet all day and also in those who do a large amount of walking. It is also reported in athletes who run and partake in various activities. Conversely people who lead an inactive and sedentary lifestyle can also develop the problem. Other risk factors include changing or using inappropriate footwear, being overweight, exercising on a different surface or terrain and having tight calf muscles. What are the symptoms? Pain is the main symptom and can be severe at times. Usually it if felt close to the inside of the heel bone on the under surface of the foot. Often pain and stiffness can be worse in the mornings with the first few steps after waking being most difficult. Pain after prolonged periods of sitting is also common. The problem can exist in both feet or just affect one side. What is the initial treatment? Relative rest from aggravating activity and stretching can help to settle the symptoms. Good footwear is important- usually shoes with wellcushioned heels and good support are needed. A simple

raised heel pad placed in the shoe (both even if one side affected) can help. A formal podiatry assessment may be needed and physiotherapy/sports therapy can help if not improving. Pain medicines may be required when the pain is severe and not settling. Paracetamol or Ibuprofen are often used and ice may help. In some cases the pain will remain and the need for more specialist treatment can be considered. Specialist treatment at Peninsula Sports Medicine for ongoing pain For cases that are not improving there are a couple of other specialist options that we can provide at Peninsula Sports Medicine. Firstly is important to check that the diagnosis is correct and therefore a diagnostic ultrasound scan is done. This will check if you do have changes of Plantar Fasciitis and that there is no other problem present such as a tear in the tissue. For confirmed cases we can then consider either shockwave therapy or cortisone injections.

By Dr Mike Burdon Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine

What is shockwave therapy? This uses high energy acoustic waves to stimulate the injured tissue to re-heal and also acts to reduce pain signalling to decrease local pain. It can be very effective in various problems and especially in Plantar Fasciitis. It is well tolerated with some mild discomfort and is usually given at weekly intervals for 3-5 sessions. It takes 10-15 minutes to treat the area each time.

What about Cortisone injections? This was traditionally done to settle the pain and inflammation down and we can do this under ultrasound guidance in the clinic. It can be painful but is tolerated well- a local anaesthetic can be used to help. On balance I have been using shockwave more often as I am seeing better results from this type of treatment. At Peninsula Sports Medicine we can discuss you preferences and plan your management accordingly.

RUGBY MATTERS Plymouth Albion chairman Graham Stirling has underlined the hard work being undertaken at the club to ensure success on and off the pitch. “The whole team are committed to building success at the club, which is so important for our supporters, rugby in the region and the contribution to the local economy,” said Graham. He highlighted the recent appointment of James Coulton as acting chief operating officer as an example of the club’s determination to build for the future. James took on the role at the beginning of September - with the main goals of improving the match day experience and creating stronger links with the local community. James brings a wealth of experience to the role having spent 30 years in sport and leisure management. This included 12 years as head of leisure at Plymouth City Council. James said: “My official title was assistant director for culture, sport and leisure which meant I was closely involved with major projects like the development of the Life Centre, Argyle’s World Cup bid and international events such as the America’s Cup and the British Art Show.” After leaving Plymouth City Council in 2012 James was appointed regional director for a major leisure management company, responsible for nearly 30 leisure centres from Penzance to South Wales. Unfortunately, budget cuts led to James being made redundant again a year later and while he was looking for a new opening, he decided to contact Albion chairman Graham Stirling offering to help out on a voluntary basis. James helped out over the summer months before being formally appointed to his new role a few weeks ago. “My first big task at Albion was overseeing the organisation of RM350 at Brickfields in July, celebrating the 350th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Marines. It was a big challenge, but proved a great success,” said James. His current challenge at Albion is to help improve the

New moves to on and off the club’s fortunes off the pitch by making match days a positive experience for people of all ages - as well as forging closer links with schools, local junior rugby clubs and the community at large. James said: “My role embraces everything from sales and marketing to health and safety through to catering and hospitality. “Our aim is to continue to improve every aspect of the club’s activities on a continuous basis. We want to make it a place where people not only enjoy the rugby on the pitch, but also have a great experience on match days. “We have already introduced a number of improvements, ranging from after match entertainment to the installation of a hi-tech electronic scoreboard. We have also invested in a new gym, new Twickenham-standard goal posts and thanks to the support of the Wooden Spoon Club – the charity of British and Irish rugby – have installed a bigger and better viewing platform for disabled supporters. “We are also engaging more closely with the community thanks to valuable sponsorship support. This has enabled us to start working with primary schools across the city and organise a mini schools tournament which will give youngsters the chance to play and be coached at Brickfields

build success pitch at Albion before matches and at half time. “A lot of primary schools in Plymouth play touch rugby so we want to support this by involving schools on a regular basis, including match days. “The first of these mini tournaments took place before the cup game against Leinster and will culminate in a final before one of the pre-Christmas matches. “We’re also meeting with local rugby clubs to offer skills coaching and other facilities for their younger players. We have already built close relationships with Plymouth University, who play and train here as well as working more closely with clubs such as Tavistock, Looe and Liskeard. We want to build on that with Plymouth clubs as well. “Last and by no means least we want to get the local community in Devonport, Stonehouse and Stoke more involved with the club.” Graham Stirling said: “The challenge for Albion and many other clubs in the Championship is sustainability. We are not in the fortunate position of having a wealthy backer so finances are a constant challenge. “We have a player budget which is lower than many others in the league, our attendances are similar to other Championship clubs, but our off-field income is probably higher than many other clubs. We also have a number of very valued sponsors all contributing to keeping the business going. “In addition, it is vital that we maximise the hospitality and conference facilities here at Brickfields, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year - not just on match days. “It’s a sad fact that a number of the founder clubs in the Championship no longer exist because of the lack of finance. It’s vital that action is taken to improve central funding for the Championship to avoid further club closures, “ added Graham.

LEGAL MATTERS

Safeguarding your future Some important advice from

It is becoming increasingly common for a person to find themselves in a position of being unable to manage their own affairs on a day to day basis. You may feel this way yourself or you may have witnessed a relative or close friend struggling to deal with everyday tasks who you feel would benefit from extra support. Gone are the days when you had a bank manager who had known

you and your family for years and would offer support to any of the family who asked. Nowadays, with all the best intentions, if you try to call a bank on behalf of a struggling relative, you will not get very far. As we get older or face ill health, it is important that we think about who we would want to assist us if we become incapable of managing our own affairs. Thinking about this early on gives you the control and offers you reassurance as you can discuss your intentions with those who you would like to help you. If you are able to plan in advance, you can take steps to appoint an Attorney or Attorneys to assist in making financial decisions or decisions about your health and welfare if and when you become unable to do so. An Attorney is the name given to an individual who is appointed to act on another’s behalf in legal or financial circumstances. It is essential that an Attorney is appointed who can be trusted completely, therefore it is normal to choose relatives or close friends to act as Attorneys. You must feel comfortable with the person or persons you are appointing and trust that they will make decisions that you would feel happy with. However, once a person has lost his or her mental capacity, it is too late for an Attorney to be appointed. In these circumstances, if the person lacking capacity requires assistance from others, an application will need to be made to the Court for the appointment of a Deputy. The Court will then decide who should be appointed as Deputy and you will have no say. It is worth bearing in mind that it is considerably cheaper and quicker for Attorneys to be appointed as opposed to a Deputy. It is therefore never too early to start planning for your future. Wolferstans have an experienced team who would be happy to talk to you about appointing Attorneys or seeking the appointment of a Deputy.

FAMILY MATTERS

I always thought Swiss Rolls looked really tricky to make but I have recently discovered that they are very simple. They are so convenient too because you decorate them as soon as they come out of the oven. You can make this from start to finish in about half an hour! Great for a quick pudding. This is what you’ll need: √√ 6 oz butter √√ 6 oz caster sugar √√ 3 eggs √√ 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence √√ 2 tablespoons of milk √√ 5 ½ oz of plain flour √√ 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder √√ About 1/3 of a jar of jam You’ll also need a swiss roll tin lined with greaseproof paper (though I’m sure any large tin would do the trick).

Crudgington of the Roundabout Day Nursery

You need to; √√ Put the oven on to Gas Mark 4 √√ Cream the butter and sugar √√ Add in the eggs, vanilla essence and milk. √√ Add the flour and baking powder. √√ Spread the mixture thinly in the tin. (It will seem very thin compared to something like a Victoria Sandwich but it needs to be this thin to make it roll.) √√ Cook for 20 minutes This is how you make the roll; Put another piece of greaseproof paper on the worktop and sprinkle with sugar. As soon as the cake is out of the oven turn it upside down on the paper. Spread a thin layer of jam over the cake (if you heat this up in a saucepan first it spreads much easier) Take the thinner end of the cake with the lining paper and roll away from you using the paper to help you. Be bold! You’ll be amazed at how easy it is. A child could do it – well nearly! What can children do to help? √√ Make the cake mixture √√ Crack the eggs √√ Spread the cake mixture and jam √√ Probably not rolling! √√ Licking the bowl, the most important bit!

Property boom? What

Speculation that the property market in Plymouth was set for a boom have proved to be unfounded – as predicted by one of the city’s leading independent estate agents. Darren Lawson, managing director of Mansbridge & Balment said: “In the first quarter of this year property prices certainly rose and market activity increased, but I said at the time that we were still only looking at single digit price rises. “My view then - and now - is that by the end of this year average property prices in the city will only be up by six or seven per cent on last year. “All the media hype around fears of a property boom

have certainly not materialised in this part of the country. It’s really only in London and the South East where price rises are running into double figures, but even there the increases are seen to be slowing down.” Darren said that recent research from Nationwide, the UK’s second largest mortgage lender, showed that the average price of a residential property fell by a nominal 0.2 per cent nationally in September. He said that both the National Association of Estate Darren Lawson...prediction proved correct Agents and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) were urging the Government not to introduce draconian measures to avoid any possibility of a property boom, as London aside, house price growth was limited. “They continue to highlight the fact that outside of London the market remains pretty well balanced and could be damaged by any steps taken to reduce the level of activity,” said Darren. A recent report by RICS also highlighted the fact the market was cooling in the South West as a whole. Less than one in ten chartered surveyors are now predicting a rise in prices over the coming three months. The latest Hometrack National Housing Survey, also indicates that the UK house market is slowing. The findings from the Hometrack survey of estate agents, released in October, revealed that there was no change in the average UK house price in September following 18 months of consecutive increases, based on its own data. “The market in Plymouth certainly remains buoyant, even though the number of properties coming onto the market did slow down in the summer months. My view is that there will be little or no growth in prices in the last quarter of this year. “Overall this year we are predicting an increase of around 30 per cent in the number of properties coming on to the

House prices cool as Plymouth heads for single digit rise in values in the last year market in Plymouth as a whole - although at Mansbridge & Balment we have surpassed that figure and achieved a 50 per cent increase year on year. “It has been an extremely busy and successful year for us and in response to the level of business we have been handling we have introduced seven days a week opening in our two Plymouth branches and recruited three new members of staff to cope with the increased demand. “I would stress that there is certainly no property boom or crisis in Plymouth and it is important for homeowners who are thinking of selling their property to maintain a realistic approach to valuations. “Unfortunately some estate agents are still over-pricing properties which is not helpful in the current climate. If you price your house sensibly, based on the selling prices of other similar properties, you will achieve a sale. Don’t be fooled by agents setting unrealistic asking prices. “It is easy for homeowners to get swept along by the sort of headlines which were appearing in the press in the spring, but common sense needs to be applied when putting your property on the market. “There is so much data available on the internet now for homeowners to do their own research and see for themselves the sort of prices being achieved in their street or area. “Sadly, we still see too many examples of homeowners be seduced by unrealistic valuations, which ultimately result in delays in selling, stress, hassle and an inevitable reduction in the price. In a nutshell, all the pain, with absolutely no gain “We still have record low interest rates and a large amount of mortgage products available. The market is stable and although there has been a slight cooling down in recent months, it remains strong. “If you are realistic and motivated, a pre-Christmas move can still be achieved,” he added.

PROPERTY MATTERS Natural stone tiles may have been around for thousands of years, but they are proving increasingly popular with more and more homeowners. There are many advantages of natural stone flooring including durability, style and its ability to fit in seamlessly with almost any type of decor - from contemporary to traditional. Steve Harris of Westward Bathroom Installation and Tiling has more than 25 years’ experience in the industry and has seen increased demand for stone flooring in recent years. Steve said: “There is a huge amount of choice available these days, from marble to slate to ceramics, porcelain, granite and limestone. These come in an increasing range of colours and sizes, which means that stone flooring is no longer limited to the kitchen or bathroom. The growing trend towards open plan living has also been a factor in the popularity of stone flooring. “We are seeing more and more homeowners installing stone flooring in lounges and bedrooms - particularly coupled with underfloor heating. It definitely offers an elegant and stylish alternative to carpets and laminate flooring.” When John and Marilyn Pearn of decided to install stone flooring throughout the whole of their Crapstone bungalow they chose a grey porcelain 60cm by 60cm Italian tile, supplied by the Natural Stone & Tile Company of Pensilva in Cornwall. “We had visited lots of tile stores, but the Italian grey tile really won us over,” said John, a retired clinical scientist. “When it came to installation, Natural Stone & Tile recommended Steve Harris - and we are delighted that they did,” he added. The couple had carried out a major refurbishment of the bungalow, which was built in 1960 and designed by John’s father. “We decided we wanted underfloor heating and chose a ground source heat pump system which was installed before

Steve arrived to carry out the flooring installation,” said John. “We were delighted with Steve’s work. His preparation and craftsmanship was second to none.” Steve said: “It was one of the largest stone flooring installations we have carried out and covered a total of 135 square metres - that’s almost 1,500 square feet. “We had to pay particular care with alignments, particularly as the flooring involved the lounge, dining room, entrance hall, kitchen and bedrooms. We also installed a granite patio with an inset mosaic pattern,” added Steve. “The project also involved tiling the bathroom and shower room throughout with stylish Italian tiles, again supplied by Natural Stone & Tile. The whole job took the best part of eight weeks, but was relatively straightforward. “One of the most pleasing aspects was the fact that Above and below: Examples of we had rounded skirting traditional and contemporary tiles to match the flooring tile installations by Steve Harris which provided an excellent finishing touch.” Marilyn, a retired Derriford radiographer, said: “We’re so pleased with the end result. The underfloor heating means that you can walk around in bare feet if you want to. The flooring itself is also very easy to clean and maintain and is extremely durable.” Steve is not only a

We also want to expand into more renewable technologies, whilst maintaining our focus on the electrical and solar installations. We like a technical challenge, and we want to offer to people a full range of services - the complete package. “What we have always done is to slowly expand in a very controlled way as opposed to taking on too much, too soon. When other companies were quieter, we grew and built on our reputation.” Another plus point of Hyde Park Electrical is that the company offers great value for money. “We charge a reasonable price to customers,” said Dave. “Customers get what they pay for, only pay for what they actually need, and often get a little more!” With regards to the future, Dave says that Hyde Park Electrical has a number of developments in the pipeline. The company is looking to expand further into small building work such as kitchens and more property development. “We have added an experienced builder

GARDENING MATTERS

Nordman invasion! It’s been another busy month in the garden centre. October’s weather was fairly average with some good sunny spells and some much needed rain. I think we will all agree our lawns have enjoyed some rain!

Warmer temperatures have kept the general season going which has been great for planting bulbs! You can definitely feel the change in the temperature now though especially in the mornings! I quite like the nice fresh feeling in the air when I come to work although I don’t like getting up in the dark! I have been out visiting Christmas tree plantations again with Dad and we have seen some lovely trees. We are so particular about our trees I sometimes feel the growers think we are a little bit too fussy! Check out the picture.

We have chosen a lot of the big trees from this grower, they are just stunning and if I am honest too good to cut down! I know I say it every year but if you would like a big tree let us know as soon as possible as they are being chosen in the field as they are ordered. These pictures are mostly of Nordmans the most reliable low needle drop tree in my opinion. So while I have been busy with trees Derek has put together a collection of shrubs for winter colour. We will be having our gardening club discount Christmas weekend from November 7 to 9 so look out for your invitations in the post! If you are not already a member, join up for free quickly and you can enjoy discounts across the centre on the weekend. A great opportunity to grab gifts and decorations for your tree!

Colourful evergreens can be a berry good choice At this time of year, a lot of the colour in our gardens doesn’t come from flowers, but from berries and foliage, which can be overlooked by a lot of gardeners, writes Derek Anderson.

It offers year round interest, with beautiful clusters of white flowers in June that are then followed by brightly coloured clusters of berries in red, orange and yellow in the autumn.
