Already in January we have seen the formal plans for the city’s new coach station submitted to the planners for approval - you can read more about that on pages 48 and 49. The construction of the new coach station will unlock the £50 million redevelopment of the existing Bretonside Bus Station into what will be known as the Drake Circus Leisure Complex, with a multiplex cinema, more than a dozen restaurants and parking for 400 vehicles. There are some observers who feel that Plymouth is already overcrowded in terms of restaurants, but only time will tell what this development will mean to other restaurants in the city. One popular restaurant which has gone from strength to strength over the last five years is Jolly Jacks at Mayflower Marina. We meet up with proprietors Sue and Sally in this issue and learn more about the secret of their success. You can read their story on pages 15 to 17. As many of you may already be aware, Darren Lawson, one of the regular expert contributors to this magazine for many years, is recovering in hospital after an accident while on a skiing holiday in December. Darren, who is managing director of Mansbridge & Balment estate agents, was airlifted back to the UK just before Christmas and now faces a long period of recovery. He was due to be transferred to a rehabilitation unit in January. The huge number of messages of support and encouragement for Darren and his family have underlined the high regard with which he is held by those who work with him and know him either through business or social connections. Our thoughts are with Darren, Debbie and the boys and we continue to pray for his rapid and full recovery.

WOMEN AT WORK
Plenty for Sharron to smile about at City College Plymouth Each morning, Sharron Robbie arrives at her office on the first floor of City College Plymouth and has a little smile to herself: “I see the sign on my door and I sometimes have to do a double take. I think to myself ‘is that really me?’ And yes, it is me. It’ something I’m very proud of.”
“I was given opportunities and experiences that a lot of young people didn’t get in those days, and my mum brought me up to feel confident in myself, and to feel that I could go out and achieve anything, should I put my mind to it.” Since then, Sharron has certainly “gone out and achieved things”. She progressed from a Girl Guide to a Queen’s Guide The sign says ‘Director of Marketing, Corporate Relations & (the highest award in Guiding), and from a netball player to Enterprise’ – quite a rapid career progression from the events committee member of Plymouth Netball for over 20 years manager position she took up seven years ago. and chair for 10 years, until finally stepping down last year The role is perfect for Plymouth-born Sharron: “I’m because of all her other commitments. passionate about Plymouth, I’m passionate about learning Not, however, before she had secured £250,000 funding and I’m passionate about young people being able to from Sport England to enable the Life Centre to have three maximise their potential. I also believe very strongly in indoor netball courts, making it one of the biggest centres community, which is at the heart of what the College does. in England outside of London. “I still play,” said goal-shooter “One of the things that makes Plymouth so phenomenal is Sharron, who has helped launched a College team, The Cyan the strength and resilience of its people – from its residents Tigers, to encourage students and staff to take up the sport. to its leaders, who are working hard to make sure that But perhaps the best example of “going out and achieving our city is engaged fully with opportunities to ensure that things” is Sharron’s career. After taking her O Levels at City Plymouth is firmly on the map College in 1979, she went to Bristol with regards to development “One of the things that makes Plymouth so phenomenal Dental Hospital and qualified as a and growth, but also in regards dental nurse before returning to is the strength and resilience of its people – from its to community and collaborative Plymouth to join the Royal Navy, residents to its leaders, who are working hard to make working. Working at the Drake: “I had four great years in early years, which were spent tothe Royal Navy between 1983 and college enables me to be part of that.” ing and fro-ing between Plymouth 1987 and I met my husband Andrew and the Far East: “Mum was a during those years (they celebrate midwife for the Red Cross and Dad was in the Royal Navy so their 30th wedding anniversary this year) but left to pursue a I spent a lot of my childhood abroad. I learnt a lot then about work ethic, strength manager. Then, in 2002, she decided it was time for a of character and the importance of community. change: “By now, there were more opportunities for people

to discover and maximise skills and talents and I’d often wondered what it would be like to go to university and challenge myself academically. “So I came back to City College Plymouth and did a full-time, two year Foundation Degree in Business. Wow! What an amazing experience. There I was, aged 39, and sitting in lectures with a really diverse group of people, many of them a lot younger than me and possessing a raft of A Levels – I absolutely loved the experience! The teaching staff were so supportive and were really committed to ensuring that we achieved our potential. “On completing my Foundation Degree, and gaining a distinction, I was able to complete a third and final year at Plymouth University to work towards achieving a BA Honours in Business Administration. I remember that first morning, walking from Mannamead, down North Hill and into Portland Square and the enormity of what I had achieved to get here really hit home – I certainly had a tear in my eye, it was really a quite emotional moment for me. University was another new world and experience for me, great fun but tremendously hard work, which was rewarded with me gaining a First Class Degree. “So now it’s 2005, I’m 42 years of age and I’ve got this lovely piece of paper which says I’m a graduate. All I have to do now is find a job! “I applied for hundreds of jobs and eventually through my network of contacts gained a position with local IT company, Goss Interactive, which was a really vibrant place to work. I
learnt a lot there, especially around new technologies and the emerging mobile market and social media – all of which have stood me in good stead since. “I then spotted an advert for a marketing & events officer at City College Plymouth and I just thought it would be amazing to work at the College after being a student there on three occasions in the past.” As Director of Marketing, Corporate Relations & Enterprise, Sharron’s role is to make people aware of the education and re-training opportunities at the college and to work with employers and the city’s leaders to ensure that skills requirements are being met. “I love my job and I love what we do here,” said Sharron. “As one of only 21 Gazelle Colleges in the UK, we are committed to embedding enterprise in everything we do. Training is employer-led and all our students have access to industry links and work experience. So the college is supporting wealth and job creation as well as economic and community cohesion.” This year marks the 125th anniversary of City College and Sharron said: “It’s an integral part of the community. We have 17,000 students, just under 5,000 of them full-time. One in 10 households in this city has someone who has been through our doors – that’s a lot of people.” And, says Sharron, you could join them: “It’s never too late to learn and the College offers amazing opportunities to re-train. Just give us a call – because just like me, you never know where you could end up.”

Elixel celebrates more success with awards and the launch of an exciting new app!
Paul Bird (left) and Gavin Jones with the new app
Plymouth-based digital creative agency Elixel is celebrating the New Year with the launch of an exciting new mobile phone app, two more awards and plans for significant growth in the next few years. Elixel was formed in 2012 by four talented graduates who first met on a degree course at Plymouth University. The quartet – Gavin Jones, Becky Veater, Paul Bird and Christian Cook – recently won the App Category in the Media Innovation Awards and were also shortlisted in the Business Start Up category of the Western Morning News Business Awards. In May last year Elixel was voted as the Plymouth Magazine’s Young Business of the Year and the business continues to go from strength to strength. The latest project has involved Elixel in the development of a brand new app promising to be the ‘ultimate guide to Plymouth art and culture’ which was launched at the end of January. Artory is a free app that leads users to the city’s culture hotspots and then rewards them with exclusive offers. Artory-users will have a chance to earn Art Miles® by visiting venues and leaving feedback. These can be exchanged in participating cultural venues all over the city for drinks, discounts and VIP events. Venues and attractions will be able to fill the app with what’s on listings and events, helping to promote Plymouth’s cultural assets to a connected audience of city residents and visitors. Art Miles® earned in one venue can be used in other venues, thanks to the collaborative approach taken by the organisations involved. Gavin said: “Although what’s on apps are commonplace, the crucial difference with Artory is that it offers visitors incentives for leaving feedback about what they thought about the show, the exhibition, the film or the attraction. This is a huge step forward from the usual feedback forms that present culture fans with paperwork after visiting.” “Although what’s on apps are commonplace, the crucial difference with Artory is that it offers visitors incentives for leaving feedback about the show, the exhibition, the film or the

By making that data-collection easy, fun and tangibly rewarding, Artory helps both the city’s culture attractions and its visitors.” “The aim is to encourage more young people to get involved with arts and culture in Plymouth and the Artory app is designed to appeal to this audience.” The app’s launch marked the culmination of a year of work for arts organisations working together to boost local culture in the city. This city-wide initiative has been produced by i-DAT and Plymouth Arts Centre with the Plymouth Culture Guide Group: Theatre Royal Plymouth, Barbican Theatre, Plymouth City Museum and Gallery, The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, Peninsula Arts Plymouth University, KARST, Ocean Studios, Take a Part, Plymouth Dance and Plymouth Culture. The Artory app is designed and developed by Elixel with i-DAT. Artory is funded by Plymouth Arts Centre, i-DAT with Plymouth University, Elixel, Destination Plymouth, Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Culture. The software behind Artory is open-source, meaning that once it has been piloted in Plymouth, it will be available for use by other cities to promote their cultural activity and there has already been interest from other cities who are keen to see how it works. with something of this size and significance. It has been a great experience working with all the partner organisations and to involve them closely in the development of the app.” In the wake of their continued success Elixel are working with an experienced business advisor to develop long term plans for the growth of the business. Gavin said: “The market we work in is dynamic and fastmoving and offers huge potential in the future. We are planning to make the most of these opportunities by tripling the size of the business in the next few years.”

Celebrations at Jolly Jacks Two friends who run one of Plymouth’s most popular eateries will be celebrating in style later this year.
Sally Baum and Sue Robson launched Jolly Jacks at the Mayflower Marina, Stonehouse in May 2010. In the five years since, the business has gone from strength to strength, winning several awards on the way. “It’s been a fantastic five years,” said Sally. “Every year it just gets better and better and we just love what has been created at Jolly Jacks. We have so many regular customers it is like one big family here.” Sue said: “The success of Jolly Jacks has massively exceeded all our expectations. We thrilled with the way things have gone over the last five years.” Friends since childhood growing up in Leicestershire, they lost touch for the best part of 25 years – until a chance encounter several years ago rekindled their friendship. Sue already knew all about Plymouth because her husband’s yacht was moored at the Mayflower Marina. But Sally was a stranger to the city. Both have spent most of their working lives in the catering and hospitality industry and when they discovered that the Plymouth eatery was on the market they jumped at the chance to relocate their families to the city. The pair took over the lease in the spring of 2010 and spent several weeks refurbishing the premises, before launching it as Jolly Jacks. “It’s the waterfront that attracted us,” added Sue, “we wouldn’t have opened a restaurant inland. Plymouth is a fabulous city and has so much potential: much of it yet to be fully realised. Continued on next page...

March 28 SHARED INVENTIONS: THE HEAVISIDE CONDITION The Heaviside Condition is a term used to define the best method for transmitting electrical signals over long distance cables without distortion. This scientific condition was coined for the gloriously eccentric engineer who predicted it: one Oliver Heaviside (1850 - 1925). His ‘peculiar mathematical witchcraft’ would forever change the rules of global communication, yet his final years in South Devon were marred by obscurity, obsession and oddness. While researching remnants of Heaviside’s life and mind, songwriter-performers Hugh Nankivell, Steve Sowden and Johnny Croose have created a new theatrical song-cycle. Here, they will present their musical investigation as a “shamanic pantomime”, alongside an innovative community choir, to uncover and celebrate the eccentricities inherent in all of us. Michael is back at the Pavilions... It was the summer of 2012 that Plymouth was treated to a mammoth six night run of comedy genius from Michael McIntyre. Now the king of stand up comedy is returning to Plymouth Pavilions this summer. Kicking off his hotly anticipated tour ‘Happy and Glorious ‘ in the city, Michael will head to the venue for four nights from Wednesday August 12 to Saturday August 15. Michael’s previous tour ‘Showtime’ was the biggest selling comedy tour in the world in 2012, playing to over 640,000 people including a record-breaking tennight residency at London’s O2 Arena matching the pop-superstar Rihanna’s 2011 record. Michael has released three best-selling DVDs: 2008’s Live and Laughing, was the biggest selling UK debut stand-up DVD of its time, Hello Wembley, which in 2009 became the fastest-selling UK stand-up DVD of all time a record it still holds, and 2012’s Showtime, which beat its competitors to the Christmas Number One spot. The past few years have been exceptional for Michael. In 2013 he performed internationally;
Hop Aboard the Caro the Sounds Musical T Sounds Musical Theatre Company presents the timeless classic Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, Carousel at the Devonport Playhouse, Fore Street, Devonport, from March 18 to March 21. This heart-warming tale depicts the recklessness and regrets of human behaviour, redeemed however, by the power of love and the human spirit. It includes immortal songs such as the poignant, If I Loved You, the uplifting June Is Bustin’ Out All Over and the iconic You’ll Never Walk Alone. When young mill worker Julie Jordan falls in love with the rough bad boy charms of Billy Bigelow, the fairground Carousel barker, a chain of events unravel that suggests that Fate has already decided the rocky path that their relationship will take. Little do the lovers realise that Billy’s actions will end in tears. Fifteen years later Billy Bigelow asks for permission to be sent down ‘from above’ for one day to try and make amends for mistakes he made on earth and he is given a chance to undo some of the hurt he has caused. How Billy instils in both his teenage daughter and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. The secondary plot concerns the contented marriage between

Mar 28 to May 30 WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR Witness the Natural History Museum’s annual exhibition which celebrates the drama and splendour of the natural world, with striking, creative and thought-provoking wildlife photography. This year’s
exhibition marks the 50th anniversary and blends new and historic award-winning images to tell the story of how photographing the natural world has changed. With challenging documentary, intimate portraits, animal behaviour and atmospheric landscapes, ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ showcases the power of images to magnificent effect, bringing the talent and vision of each photographer to all who visit. Admission free. May 23 to Sep 26 FALLEN EMPEROR: NAPOLEON IN PLYMOUTH SOUND IN 1815 In the summer of 1815, for nine dramatic days, HMS Bellerophon was anchored in Plymouth Sound with the self-styled French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte on board. Napoleon had been defeated at Waterloo and surrendered himself into the care of the Royal Navy. The lengthy and costly Napoleonic Wars were over – but what to do with Napoleon now? During the wars, ‘Boney’ had been portrayed as a ‘monster’ and ‘disturber of the peace’ – yet he was a folk-hero to the lower classes of all nations, even those he fought against. The exhibition will be centred on the popular painting from our collections by Jules Girardet and will explore the differing perceptions of Napoleon on his journey to Plymouth. It will also look at the ship (commonly known as the ‘Billy Ruffian’) and the scenes in Plymouth Sound. Why did so many people flock to see Napoleon? Were they curious or sympathetic? Was he a celebrity or a threat?

The new Plymouth Studio School - which is a partnership between City College Plymouth, the University of St Mark & St John and businesses in the city – will give 14 to 19 year olds a head-start in Sport, Leisure and Tourism, and Hospitality and Event Management. One of just 46 specialist Studio Schools in the UK, the Plymouth Studio School offers a unique and exciting way to learn, combining academic and vocational qualifications with hands-on work experience with local employers to prepare students to pursue their chosen careers. With only 100 spaces available for September 2015, Year 10 and Year 12 students need to get their applications in now to take advantage of this new addition to the educational choices available to young people in the city. All courses are designed around clearly identified future employment opportunities in the city, particularly those linked to the key priority growth sectors, including sport and leisure, visitor and lifestyle sectors. These sectors are growing rapidly in the city and require a skilled and enthusiastic workforce, providing good employment prospects for future Plymouth Studio School graduates. The Plymouth Studio School will be based in a purposebuilt £2.5million facility at the University of St Mark & St John campus, which will allow sports pathway students to access the on-site world-class sporting facilities. The main difference with mainstream schools is that subjects are taught through projects designed with

Professor Cara Aitchison, Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Mark & St John, said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting new partnership designed to support education, employability and the sustainability of inward investment to the region in the sport, tourism and hospitality sectors.” Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, commented: “The Studio School brings a new opportunity to the table for young people and its links to City College Plymouth and the University of St Mark & St John will add to the city’s richness. “With three higher education institutions and an excellent further education college no-one could say that Plymouth is not a fantastic city for education and future employment options.” Key employment partners for the Plymouth Studio School include Plymouth Argyle, Plymouth Raiders, Destination Plymouth, the National Marine Aquarium, the National Trust and the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. In addition to gaining traditional GCSE/A Level qualifications and specialist vocational qualifications, students will also enjoy a range of business, enrichment and life skills courses and activities. Get on track for a Canadian spectacular!
Hi I’m Harry Toy I worked with Peter Goord and then with Anthony for almost 35 years. My wife Vivienne, has now joined me in retirement and while at school she studied Canada in geography, and since has always wanted to visit, so for her retirement present we decided on the Rocky Mountaineer rail journey.
to the summit of the mountain (7,486 ft) at the top take the one kilometre Summitwalk to the Meteorological station – a camera is a must. The next stage of our journey is to Jasper. A full day exploration by coach takes us through some of Canada’s magnificent scenery. The journey takes us to Lake Louise and a chance to photograph the beautiful turquoise waters. The tour takes us on through the Icefields Parkway, spectacular glaciers, cascading waterfalls and snow-capped peaks which dot this mountain wilderness. On this stage of the journey we were lucky enough to see elks and a Black Bear.
You have three choices of class on the train Red Leaf, Silver Leaf and Gold Leaf, we choose Silver Leaf. All include breakfast and lunch and overnight accommodation in Kamloops, you are also waited on by three stewards (ours where nicknamed the three amigos) they were very informative and very, very funny. We flew from Heathrow to Calgary – the gateway to the Rockies – and stayed at the Sandman Hotel City Centre for two nights. The hotel is right opposite the LRT station which takes you to all the major attractions, such as Calgary Zoo, the Calgary Tower (a must for the view) and also the Calgary Stampede. An easy 15 minute walk takes you to 17th Avenue, the main retail and entertainment district. From Calgary we travelled on to Banff for two nights, staying at the Ptarmigan Inn. The hotel offers free travel on the Banff Roam shuttle which takes you to the foot Harry and Vivienne enjoying the Canadian experience of Sulphur Mountain. Take the Gondola

The tour stops at the Columbia Icefield where we venture by Ice Explorer onto the massive Athagasca Glacier. We travel on to the brand new Glacier SkyWalk, a glass-floored platform that extends 30 metres out over the Sunwapta Canyon. I am terrified of heights and to come all this way and not do the skywalk, would be unforgivable, so with eyes closed and repeating the words don’t look down I did it! We continue our journey to Jasper for two nights staying at the Marmot Lodge. With a full day at leisure we relax and enjoy the scenery. The next morning it’s an early start leaving the hotel and transfer to the Jasper rail station where we check in for our Rocky Mountaineer Railtour for the next two days, including an overnight stop in Kamloops, the final destination being Vancouver. The highlights include Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Rockies, Pyramid Falls, the climb over Yellowhead Pass and Fraser Valley. The scenery is dramatic and simply breatktaking. We finally arrive in Vancouver for a four night stay at the Coast Plaza Hotel and Suites in the west end of the city. In my

A local car dealership has offered a helping hand to local charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth to enable them to care for more patients at home. Murray Skoda Plymouth, located in Valley Road, Plympton has supplied a brand new Skoda Octavia Tour de France to be used by St Luke’s specialist nurses. The nurses form part of St Luke’s new Crisis Team who provide terminally ill patients a 72 hour window of specialist care at home.
Pictured, from left, are Kevin Murray, Keri Brisley, Justin Dudley and Richard Greaves of Murray Skoda, Jenny Evans, St Luke’s Specialist Nurse and Sharon Smerdon St Luke’s Crisis Team lead
The car is an essential tool to deliver this care, as Crisis Team Lead at St Luke’s, Sharon Smerdon explained: “We are covering a vast geographical area from the city out to Dartmoor and the South Hams. “Our care is provided around the clock, so to have a reliable 4x4 that can deal with rural terrain, in winter and in the middle of the night is vital. We are very grateful for the support from Murray Skoda and thank them for helping us to care for more people at home” Sales executive at Murray Skoda, Richard Greaves said: “It has been an honour on behalf of the Murray Group to provide St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth with such a vehicle which will aid in such a vital role in providing essential care to the Plymouth Community and the surrounding areas, we look forward to providing continued support. “The vehicle is fit for purpose with the latest technology, eco-friendly diesel powered engine and a four wheeled drivetrain for when the need arises.” The Crisis Team will complement existing care provisions currently provided to over 3,000 patients by St Luke’s at home; in hospital and in the hospice. The service is another major milestone in the hospice’s core aim to reach out and care for even more local people at home as part of a ‘Hospice without Walls’.

Will and Mo Palmer in their new kitchen
An Ivybridge couple are enjoying life in their bungalow home - thanks to the team at KF Kitchens. Retired company director Will Palmer and his wife Maureen - better known as Mo - originally moved to Ivybridge three years ago to be nearer their daughter and her family. “We couldn’t find a bungalow then and ended up buying a
KF Kitchens help the home of house,” said Will, “but when the bungalow in Woodland Road came onto the market last year we felt it was the right one for us.” However, it was anything but a dream home - more of a nightmare. Will said: “It needed a lot of work, especially the kitchen which was old-fashioned and needed complete modernisation. Ceilings were artexed and there were artificial beams made of polystyrene. “I have fitted kitchens in the past, but there was far too much work to do on the bungalow. We knew all about KF Kitchens because they installed a new kitchen at the house we purchased in 2011. “We had no hesitation in asking KF Kitchens to carry out the work on the bungalow,” said Will. “They had done a superb job at the first house and we were totally confident about their ability to carry out all the work on the bungalow.” The work involved knocking down a wall to create an open plan kitchen and dining area, creating an opening in the wall between the kitchen and lounge, new ceilings, plastering, plumbing, decorating, electrical work and flooring. “KF Kitchens have a great team of professional trades people and the way they work together and co-ordinate the job takes all of the stress and pressure away,” said Will. “The whole project was overseen and project managed by Nathan and the team at KF Kitchens and we are delighted with the end result,” he added. The couple chose a contemporary style kitchen with Kashmere coloured doors and draws, matching Silestone quartz countertops and a range of NEFF appliances, including built-in oven, hob, microwave, warming drawer, washing machine and dishwasher. Attractive Karndean flooring complements the stunning new kitchen. Mo said: “We stayed in a hotel for three weeks while the work was undertaken so that the KF Kitchens team could get

They have all worked together for several years and Will and Mo knew them well from the the work they did at their first home in Ivybridge.” Will added: “We cannot recommend KF Kitchens highly enough. Three concerts are planned for the next few months at a prestigious new venue - the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. The 22nd international concert series will carry the name of concert organiser Jeanie Moore MVO who is delighted that they are returning to Plymouth. Jeanie said: “We have such a huge number of supporters in Plymouth who appreciate the fact that the international concert series enables them to enjoy some of the world’s finest musicians. It was a disappointment that we were unable to stage the concerts in the city in 2014 because the usual venue at the Plymouth City Museum was no longer available. “The Duke of Cornwall is such a perfect setting for the concerts and I’m really excited about the year ahead.” Duke of Cornwall director Jon Morcom said: “We have worked with Jeanie in the past with various events at the hotel and have also supported her annual WarChild concert. “We celebrated our 150th anniversary last year with a number of special events which brought lots of people into the hotel. “We want to continue to encourage more and more people to come to the Duke and Jeanie Moore’s International Concert Series is perfect for this setting. We’re delighted to be working with Jeanie on these popular events.” The first concert will be an evening event featuring The Oxley-Meier International Guitar Duo (pictured below) on Friday March 27. It will be held in the Ballroom at the Duke and guests will be able to enjoy a pre-concert dinner in the restaurant served from 6.30pm, with the concert starting at 8pm in the Ballroom.
Jeanie said: “Pete Oxley and Nick Meier have a freshness to their masterful guitar playing. Their repertoire of contemporary fare ranges from Turkish panache to soundscapes of Latin America, Hungarian gypsy music and beyond. Their skill stretches to a wide variety of guitars: nylon string, steel string, 12 string, fretless and saz.” The two other concerts will be at lunchtime, starting at 1pm and will take place in the spectacular surroundings of the Duke of Cornwall’s newly-refurbished AA Rosette restaurant. Talented string quartet Divertimento will be performing on Wednesday April 29, while renowned classical guitarist Craig Ogden will be partnered by flautist Judith Hall on Wednesday May 20. Pre-concert drinks, light lunches and bar snacks will be available for those attending the lunchtime events. Despite being in her 87th year Jeanie retains her passion for concert organisation. “I can’t imagine the day when I won’t be organising concerts. It is such an important part of my life and I have made so many friends down the years.” As vice-chair of the Plymouth Music Accord, Jeanie is one of the best-known figures on the city’s music scene. Apart from organising the International Concert Series for more than 20 years, she has also raised many thousands of pounds through her WarChild concerts since 1998. A former professional and much-travelled singer, she organised her first fund-raising concert more than 30 years ago for Plymouth YMCA where she spent 10 years involved with fund-raising and PR. Her volunteer work for the Prince’s Trust over many years led to her being made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in 1999. Jeanie also won a Plymouth Women of Achievement Award for her contribution to the arts. She ran music workshops in local schools featuring famous musicians for several years and was also manager of the South West Sinfonietta Orchestra for five years. Jeanie would welcome sponsors for the forthcoming concerts and can be contacted on 01752 770345 or via email at jeanie@jeaniemooremvo.co.uk

Coach station plans submitted
Concourse view - Cornwall Street
Plans for a brand new coach station in the heart of Plymouth city centre have now been formally submitted to planners. New and updated images are now available showing the latest detail for the £4.17 million project new destination for long distance coaches and a surface-level car park on the former Mayflower West car park site in the city’s West End Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This is a significant stage for the project to create a much better welcome for visitors and travellers coming by coach to the city. “Not only are we providing up to date facilities for today’s travellers, the new location will also significantly increase the number of people coming in and out of the West End, which can only be good for local businesses.” The new coach station will have seven coach stands that will serve National Express and Megabus. The coach waiting area will be constructed to a very high standard with granite paving and a canopy roof structure. Other features include: • Real time passenger information systems • Blue badge holder drop off bay • Customer help points • Ticket machines • Toilets • Luggage lockers • Seating area • Cycle stands • Soft landscaping • CCTV • Ornamental lighting

An indoor ticket office and waiting room will be provided in the former Lloyds Bank building, with toilets, comfy seating, ‘real time’ information screens, ticket office and a food, drink and newsagent concession. The car park will have around 100 spaces, including dedicated blue badge holder bays, drop off and pick up taxi/ private hire bays and coach passenger drop off bays. As with the coach station, the car park will have lighting and CCTV systems to make it safe and secure for users. New landscaping and trees will surround the site and a sustainable drainage system included to reduce surface water. This will be linked to an irrigation system for the new trees. New signs for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists will be part of the scheme to make sure that people can find their Concourse view - from North

way around and to the new facility. Access to the new facility will be improved with enhancements to the entrances from Market Way, Cornwall Street and Mayflower Way. Other features include underground refuse stores for premises around the site perimeter to remove the need for unsightly refuse bins and a new fire escape at the back of Mayflower Way shops to replace the one that was removed when the old car park was demolished. The final design took into account comments from traders as well as members of the public following a consultation in September. The new coach hub will replace the tired outdated coach station at Bretonside, which is being redeveloped as part of a major investment package proposed by British Land, the owner of Drake Circus and the UK’s largest listed retail landlord. The proposed Drake Circus Leisure development includes an 11-screen cinema complex, 13 restaurants and parking for over 400 cars, as well as extensive improvements to public areas with features, seating and planting. The scheme would transform the link from the city centre to the Barbican and the waterfront, making it more attractive and easier for visitors and shoppers to move from one to the other.

The #LOLPlymouth campaign – ‘Let’s Obliterate Litter’ took place in the city over the last two weeks in January. The campaign, organised by Clean Up Britain - aimed to engage the community, living and working in the city centre, in a positive way by offering rewards – such as free tickets to see Plymouth Argyle, Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Raiders, money off vouchers or even a free bag of chips – to people for putting their litter where it should be: in the bin. Aby Hawker of Clean Up Britain said: “We chose Plymouth for the pilot because of the enthusiasm of all the various organisations and businesses involved. These included the Plymouth City Centre Company, Plymouth University, Plymouth Argyle and Wrigley’s. “We are now evaluating the campaign and if the results prove positive it will be offered as an anti-litter initiative in other towns and cities in the UK.” She said the campaign aimed to encourage changes in behaviour and attitudes to litter - particularly young people aged between 14 and 26. Clean up Britain launched a competition in November with Plymouth schools to design a logo for the #LOLPlymouth campaign to allow them to engage with a younger audience and inspire them to be involved. Stefan Krause from Plymouth City Centre Company Manager said: “We see this as an opportunity to not only lead the way as the first city centre in Britain to run the #LOL campaign, but also as an opportunity to encourage people to have a positive attitude towards working together to have a litter free city. Engaging young students from local schools to design the logo is fantastic.” Aby said: “Year five pupils at Pilgrim Primary School had the task set for them as homework and they did an amazing job. The standard of work was really high but we chose Reece Edmunds’ take on the anti-litter theme. He created a character which really brought the campaign, aimed at a core audience of 14 - 26 year olds, to life. “We took his sketch and worked with one of Plymouth’s rising stars in graffiti art to turn it into what we feel is an incredibly strong design. We were delighted with the result.” Sue Jones, headmistress at Pilgrim Primary School, said: “As an eco-school, we are extremely conscientious, saving energy, recycling and taking care of the environment are very important to us. So when we were given the opportunity to get some of our children involved in this innovative campaign, we jumped at the chance.” As part of the initiative a film was also made and premiered in Plymouth highlighting the anti-litter message.

GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE
Snowdrops herald the arrival Flowering bulbs really start to take off in February. They are a clear signal that winter is nearing an end and spring is well and truly on its way. The first to appear out of the ground is the Snowdrop. For many the arrival of the Snowdrop (Galanthus Nivalus) in our garden is the first clear cut signal that the days are getting longer and spring is just around the corner. They can form dense carpets of white flowers if left undisturbed and are fantastic for naturalizing. The flowers are crisp white and look quite delicate hanging on thin stems, but are remarkably tough. The colder and worse the weather is, the longer the flowers last, in a mild sunny season, the flowers only tend to last a few weeks before going over. To make the most of the flowers it’s better to plants them in a shaded position for them to perform at their best, however they will grow in most aspects. Snowdrops are perfectly suited to growing in the shade of shrubs, trees and hedgerows, but also look great growing in beds, borders, hanging baskets and pots. They grow to approximately 8cm (3ins) in height and 15cm (6ins) in spread per clump. They will grow in most soils but make the best plants in heavy clay. They best time to buy and plant Snowdrops is in the spring when the plants are actively growing, they transplant more successfully this way, whilst autumn bought dry bulbs may take a season or two to settle and establish before flowering. Another reliable bulb that heralds the end of winter is the Crocus. The Crocus is one of the first bulbs to flower that offers a range of bright colours on those dull winter days. They are great for growing through lawns to add colour and cheer to signal the changing of the season. Crocus are great for naturalizing and come back year after year with more vigour. They are perfect for growing in rockeries or at the edge of borders where they can be noticed. They look great if planted in mixed baskets and posts with other later flowering bulbs giving a long season of interest and colour. Plant them in large drifts in beds, borders or under shrubs for

a beautiful and dramatic display. The most widely available Crocuses grown are Snow Crocus (Crocus Chrysanthus) and Dutch Crocus (Crocus Vernus). Crocus Chrysanthus usually flowers two or three weeks earlier than Crocus Vernus at the beginning of February. The corms of Crocus Chrysanthus are smaller than that of Crocus Vernus, so it produces smaller sized flowers, however to make up for this, it produces more flowers per corm. It grows to 8-10cm (3-4ins) in height and around 15cm (6ins) in spread. Grow them in sun to light shade in a free draining soil. Crocus Chrysanthus is available in white, yellow, purple, mauve, stripped and bronze. Crocus Vernus has larger flowers and grows slightly taller to 10-12cm (4-5 ins) in height and flowers later at the end of February just as Crocus Chrysanthus has finished. They prefer a position in full sun, but will take some light shade and can be grown in most soil types. The flowers come in shades of purple, mauve, yellow, white and cream. For the best display, grow in conjunction with Crocus Chrysanthus for a longer show of early spring colour. For something a little more dainty and delicate, there is Cyclamen Coum. They are great for naturalizing in shade corners if you want something a little more discreet and subtle. Cyclamen Coum have small flowers with reflexed petals that sit on top of thin but sturdy stems. They also have extremely attractive leaves which appear in early winter and help to brighten dull and dark corners. The leaves are heart shaped and have a glaucous green base with silver marking. There is a huge range of different leaf marking and these in themselves are very attractive. When it starts to flower in early spring with white or pink flowers, the combination is beautiful. They like to be grown in a shaded spot, with a rich fertile soil that doesn’t dry out in summer. They grow to a height of 8cm (3 ins) with a spread of 10cm (4 ins). February is the month where Daffodils (Narcissus) start to make an appearance. There a few reliable varieties that will flower in February without fail. Narcissus February Gold is one of the first. It is whole flower is the typical yellow colour that is
They are great for growing in rockeries, beds, and borders and particularly useful for pots and baskets. The bulbs multiply year after year, producing tight clumps abundant with flowers. Narcissus Tete a Tete is cheerful and incredibly easy to grow, they like a sunny to shady position in moist, fertile soil. They are even suited to growing on a cool window ledge. A much under rated tree is the Weeping Flowering Cherry (Prunus Kiku Shidare Sakura ‘Cheal’s Weeping’). The flowers of the Weeping Flowering Cherry are a pale pink in colour and flower all along the weeping branches. The petals are frilled and sweetly scented of almonds. It also puts on a spectacular autumn display of foliage in rich tones of red, orange and yellow. It is perfectly suited to all but the smallest size garden and can be grown in beds, borders and in pots, if it’s a large pot. Weeping Flowering Cherry grows to a height of 7.5m (25 ft) with a spread of 8m (26 ft), if it is a non-grafted specimen, however typical grafted specimens usually grow to a height and spread of 1.5-2.4m (5-8 ft). It likes a sunny aspect in well drained, fertile soil. A shrub with spectacular flowers is the Camellia. Nothing at this time of year can compete with the beauty and size of its flowers. The flowers are similar to roses in appearance and come in a wide range of colours from white, cream, pink, red and bi-coloured and can completely smother the plant. They are brash and showy and worth a spot in any garden. They can be grown in bed, borders or pots and need very little looking after. The only requirement they need is that they prefer acidic soil, so as long as you plant them in ericaceous soil or feed them with an acidic plant fertiliser they will be happy. They prefer a shady spot, but will cope quite happily with full sun if kept moist. Camellias can vary in size from 2.4m (8 ft) to 5m (15 ft) depending on the cultivar, so always make sure you check the labels. They can however be kept to a suitable size with pruning.

commonly associated with Narcissus. The flower is produced on top of stems approximately 30cm (12 ins) tall, the petals are slightly reflexed away from the trumpet, giving it a unusual yet graceful appearance. Due to the early flowering of February Gold, the plant has usually stored up enough energy by April and the leaves start to die back, unlike most Daffodils which can’t be cut back until June. This makes them perfect for growing through the lawn because the leaves die back just when the first mow of the year is due. They can also be used in beds, borders and pots that will be used for summer bedding as the bulbs will have gone into dormancy when it’s time to plant bedding. Narcissus February Gold likes a sunny to part shaded position in moist but not waterlogged fertile soil. Another excellent Daffodil (and one of the most popular) for early flowering is Narcissus Tete a Tete. It is a dwarf growing Narcissus only reaching 15cm (6 ins) in height, bearing multi headed stems of miniature yellow, typical Daffodil flowers. Their small height makes them excellent at coping with all the weather and they won’t blow over unlike taller varieties of Narcissus. www.cornerstonevision.com
