Big boost for the city centre

ARMADA

ARMADA KITCHENS BATHROOMS - BEDROOMS - TILES

Big changes are definitely afoot in Plymouth city centre following a number of recent announcements. In the middle of March the city council’s planning committee gave the go-ahead for the new coach station on the site of the old Mayflower West car park, which in turn should unlock the redevelopment of the current Bretonside bus station by British Land. They plan to create Drake Circus Leisure which will include an 11-screen multiplex cinema, featuring an I-Max or similar, along with restaurants, parking and other enhancements to the area. The location of the new coach station may not have met with universal approval, but few would argue that the current Bretonside bus station hardly creates a good impression for visitors arriving in the city. The development of the new coach station will bring a much-needed boost for the West End of the city, which is also set to benefit from a £3 million improvement programme at the City Market and the creation of a new Central Library on the corner of Mayflower Street and Armada Way. Meanwhile it has also been announced that Urban Splash, who have, of course, developed the award-winning Royal William Yard, are acquiring the Civic Centre. Although detailed plans have not been announced it is envisaged that the old council offices will be upgraded and modernised to include apartments, hotel space, restaurants and other public amenities. Urban Splash has an enviable reputation for regenerating tired concrete buildings into attractive residential and commercial space. The Civic Centre, which is a listed building, will certainly present a challenge. All these developments, along with the rapidly changing face of Millbay, is certainly good news for the city. Hope you enjoy this month’s issue!

Sharon bids to become Britain’s School Chef of the Year A school chef from Plymouth is bidding to become the country’s School Chef of the Year. Sharon Cundell, who works at St Edward’s Church of England Primary School in Eggbuckland, went up against six other chefs from the region for the Lead Association for Catering in Education, in March to capture the South West School Chef of the Year title.

Sharon was up against Katie Cooper from Cornwall, Jodie Pearce from Devon, Rebecca Clark from Bristol, Jackie Hardman from North Somerset, Jane Thomas and Tasha Watts from Somerset.

IN MEMORY • CHALLENGE • GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT Whether it is in memory of a loved one, a physical challenge or as part of a girls’ night out, this is your chance to dress top to toe in pink, put on your flashing tiara and take part in the 3, 6 or 12 mile routes which start and finish at the University of St Mark & St John on Saturday 18 July 2015.

It is a family affair as 3 generations of Plympton women walk for St Luke’s! Representing Plympton, Nana, Janice Brown (Age 69), Mum, Sharron Blackler (Age 46) and Daughter, Amy Blackler (Aged 17) are walking the 12 mile route as a team for St Luke’s on Saturday 18 July. Sharron Blackler said: “I have taken part for 2 consecutive years walking with my mum, sister and daughters. St Luke’s has been very close to my heart after the hospice looked after my Auntie, Gill Steer, so well. So many people were involved in my Auntie’s care; specialist doctors nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, volunteers; the list is endless. The walk gives me time to remember a very special lady and I hope the money we raise will help other patients and their families in the community dealing with a terminal illness access the special care of St Luke’s. I honestly don’t know what we would have done without them”.

Celebrating their 50th year anniversary, Princess Yachts International plc are official sponsors of this year’s Midnight Walk. Chris Gates, Managing Director commented “We were delighted to be asked to sponsor the St Luke’s Midnight Walk once again and show our appreciation for the incredible work the hospice does within our community”.

Daughter, Amy Blackler, aged 17 who is a student at The Ridgeway School in Plympton added: “It’s certainly the challenge element I love about the Midnight Walk, it is also great to have a bit of fun and get dressed up. It is a really sociable event that I wouldn't miss. The one thing that is really special, is to spend time with my family. I really would encourage younger women of Plymouth to get involved, set up a team like us and make it a real family get together”. The Midnight Walk for the girls is a true family affair with husband Chris and son Tom volunteering as marshals and sister-in-law Teresa Hood helping to sell merchandise. If this story has inspired you to take part in the Midnight Walk 2015, register for your place now! Or if you would like to volunteer on the night please contact the Events Team on 01752 492626.

Spring is in the air and now is the perfect time to get knitting! According to Barbara Greep the days of knitting only during the winter are long since gone. This year celebrates the third anniversary of her shop, Wool Palette at the Broadway in Plymstock. The new seasonal stock has just started to arrive – including brightly coloured cottons for sunny days and stunning patterns for beach wear. Barbara started knitting when she was seven, when she was taught by her mother and aunt: “In those days knitting was a necessity,” said Barbara. “Now it’s for pleasure or for people to create something different either for themselves, someone in the family, or to sell.” From funky wools to the more traditional yarns, Wool Palette has a huge range to choose from; the prices fit all purses too. Top of the range is the exclusive Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal wool/cashmere at £11.95 per 100gram ball and then there is the bright value acrylic range at £1.70 per 100gram ball. Each Saturday morning between 10am-12 noon the value range is offered at two for £1.80. “We cater for all,” said Barbara, “but even with the Debbie Bliss, you can create an on-trend lovely vintage summer top for just £36.” This year’s trend is for vibrant colours and designer wools. Among the designer wools at Wool Palette are NORO, a Japanese wool/silk mix hand-dyed yarn with a cult following; Bergere de France, French couture which is only available in Plymouth at Wool Palette; and Rico, summery knitting and crochet cottons from Germany. “Our best sellers are James C Brett ‘Marble DK’ and ‘Chunky’; Debbie Bliss ‘Baby Cashmerino’; and King Cole ‘Riot’, which knits up randomly. These ranges are very popular and attract the younger customer; the more traditional wools remain as popular as ever.” For Barbara, the wool shop was a totally different venture when she opened it in 2012. After an early career in the RAF, she learnt how to crochet while stationed in RAF Changi, Singapore, and continued her knitting and crochet right up to her retirement as a procurement manager with Wrigley’s in 2007. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and had the 10-year all-clear last year: “Being diagnosed with cancer got me started on my bucket list,” she said. “I wanted to do so many things. I walked up Kilimanjaro in 2004, the Atlas Mountains in 2006 and I did a tandem dive off the side of a mountain in Switzerland in 2005. “I wanted to treat myself holistically so I studied for my degree in complementary health and I think knitting is a

Wool Palette just grows and grows in the Great British knitting revival holistic therapy. It’s relaxing and rewarding.” Barbara opened Wool Palette right at the time when knitting and crocheting came back in fashion. Now, it’s the only dedicated wool shop left in Plymouth. The secret, says Barbara, is to keep a close eye on trends and to keep on offering new styles. And there’s another reason: “Our customer service is second to none and our customers are assured of a full back up service if they get themselves in a bit of a tangle,” she said. “The business is growing all the time. It’s not just knitting and crocheting clothing that has become very popular, it’s also the crafts and novelty creations. People come in here asking for patterns and wool so they can knit doughnuts, biscuits, flowers, toys and other things to put up in their homes. “TV programmes also set off trends. Call the Midwife sparked a rush for tea cosies and the Great British Sewing

Bee has had an impact too.” As well as the range of wools, cottons and patterns, Wool Palette stocks gifts and all the essential haberdashery accessories. The shop also hosts two free-of-charge knitting clubs, 1-3pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and many customers use these to take part in ‘charity knits’ such as blankets in Africa and Devon-based charities such as the Donkey Sanctuary. Expert workshops take place on selected Sundays and Thursday evenings when the shop is closed – check the Facebook page for forthcoming workshops and details on how to get involved.

TOURISM MATTERS

Discover Buckfast Abbey - Devon’s hidden gem

Nestled in a tranquil haven on the edge of Dartmoor and along the banks of the River Dart, Buckfast Abbey – the only English medieval monastery to have been restored and used again for its original purpose – offers all the ingredients for a great day out. One of Devon’s hidden gems, the Benedictine monastery is well worth a visit at any time of the year, but is particularly beautiful as spring breathes a fresh lease of life into this historic and spiritual setting. Founded in 1018 as a monastery, Buckfast Abbey has experienced times of peace, turbulence, grandeur, ruin and eventual restoration. It is still the site of a working monastery, which wholeheartedly adopts St Benedict’s exhortation to “make hospitality your special care” so that those who perhaps come as tourists may leave as pilgrims. Located just a 30-minute drive from Plymouth, the Abbey Church and grounds are free to enter and benefit from ample free parking too. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the fascinating physic and sensory gardens – the latter of which is based on designs for medieval pleasure gardens and is intended to stimulate the senses of sight, smell, hearing and touch – before discovering the 150 varieties of lavender in the lavender garden. A visit to Buckfast Abbey would not be complete without lunch or afternoon tea at The Grange Restaurant. Open from 10am every day, a mouthwatering array awaits you – from freshly baked pastries, homemade cakes and delicious homemade lunches, all made on the premises using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. All this can be enjoyed while surveying the delights of the Abbey Church and surrounding gardens from the glass-covered terrace. Another treat is a visit to the Monastic Shop, which sells an extraordinary collection of gifts produced by convents and monasteries throughout Europe and the Book Shop is one of the largest religious and spiritual book shops

in the South West. There is something for everyone in the Gift Shop, which sells a wide variety of gifts, from a delicious selection of country wines, biscuits, fudge and preserves produced in the West Country. The shop also stocks a range of ceramics, glass, collectables and a selection of fragranced products. Soon to celebrate its 1,000-year anniversary, Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks. Founded by King Canute, the Abbey fell into ruin after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 and centuries later it was rebuilt on its original foundations by a handful of monks. Walk the polished aisles, wonder at its great architecture, sit and take a moment to reflect. To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the Abbey’s Education Department, Buckfast is inviting families from across the region to its Christian Storytelling Festival, which runs from July 2 to 4. With two days of school events, the festival culminates in a family day on Saturday 4th July, which hopes to attract visitors from across the region. A full programme of workshops and performances will cater to all ages, and plays host to a wide range of storytellers, performers and puppeteers from across the country. Headlining the event will be the much-loved and internationally acclaimed performance storyteller Bob Hartman. Renowned for his dynamic, energetic and interactive performances, Bob has entertained audiences on both sides of the Atlantic and will be attending for the duration. The Education Department will be running drop-in Easter craft sessions for families on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the school holidays. Come and make some art!

Panoramic views of the city from the Duke of Cornwall Hotel’s tower

Plymouth’s Duke of Cornwall Hotel will once again be offering the chance to enjoy a top experience this year. The popular Tea at the Top experience provides guests with the unique opportunity of enjoying a luxurious afternoon tea in the hotel’s iconic tower. The tower was lovingly refurbished two years ago as part of the hotel’s 150th Anniversary and Tea at the Top was launched as part of the celebrations. Hotel director Jon Morcom said: “Tea at the Top proved an instant hit in 2013 and we were delighted to repeat the experience last year. It has now become so popular that we will be offering Tea at the Top every year. “We have already taken a lot of bookings for 2015, some of these from people who are coming back for a second time.” Guests can enjoy spectacular 360 degree view of Plymouth and beyond in the unique tower, which is steeped in local history. The afternoon tea menu includes mouthwatering sandwiches - including smoked salmon, beef and gammon ham – traditional homemade scones with preserves and clotted cream, homemade pastries - including battenberg, macaroons and mini fruit tarts with sugar glaze – all served with tea or coffee by the guests’ own personal butler. Each guest also receives a glass of champagne to add sparkle to the occasion. Tea at the Top is only available on a limited basis with just two settings on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1pm to 3pm and 4pm to 6pm. Jon added: “A number of guests have taken advantage of enjoying Tea at the Top combined with an overnight stay in the unique Tower Suite. Dinner in our recently-refurbished AA Rosette restaurant can also be included to make it a truly memorable visit.” Guests who have enjoyed Tea at the Top are glowing in their praise for the experience. Childminder Maria Murphy from Beacon Park was treated to Tea at the Top by the mother of a little girl she had looked after for several years. Maria said: “It was a complete surprise and a lovely

Unique top flight experience at the Duke of Cornwall gesture,” said Maria. “I had no idea what to expect and it was such a special occasion to be there with the girl and her mum. The weather was beautiful on the day we went and I couldn’t believe how spectacular the views were. “And to have our own personal butler waiting on us was fantastic. He was so attentive.” Maria was so impressed with the experience that she treated her sister-in-law to Tea at the Top for a special birthday surprise. “It really is a unique and novel gift idea. I have already given vouchers for Tea at the Top to three other couples who are really looking forward to going.” Jackie Furzeland from Kelly Bray was equally impressed with the experience. “My husband and I both had big birthdays last year and our children treated us to Tea at the Top as a surprise gift,” she said. “The views were breathtaking - especially with the binoculars provided - and the whole experience truly memorable. It was also interesting to read about the history of the hotel and the tower. “We also stayed overnight in the Tower Suite which meant we were able to spend time in the tower after dinner in the restaurant to take in the views of Plymouth by night. It was magical. “We have since bought vouchers for our son and his partner and other friends as well - we wanted them to experience such a special treat. We would not hesitate in recommending it to others as well.” Jon added: “We have two sittings available on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1pm to 3pm and 4pm to 6pm and would recommend people book early to avoid disappointment!” The price is £70 for two people exclusively, with butler and champagne.

The Royal Western Yacht Club....

Unique venue with breath-taking views

Plymouth boasts many impressive venues for weddings, special celebrations and corporate events - but few that offer such a breath-taking location as The Royal Western Yacht Club. It may be one of the premier yacht clubs in the world, but it is very much available to individuals and organisations for a wide variety of functions. The prestigious waterfront event location in Queen Anne’s Battery has stunning views of Plymouth Sound and is a distinctive venue for weddings, corporate hospitality, parties and celebrations. The main function room - the combined space of the Restaurant and Lounge - is ideal for wedding luncheons,

dinners and receptions with its bright and spacious layout. It also features a permanent wooden dance floor, lounge furniture along the windows and a balcony that can be enjoyed when weather permits. The main space can accommodate up to 100 guests comfortably seated on round tables, or up to 130 guests for a buffet-style reception. The Lounge area can be screened off to accommodate up to 60 guests for a variety of events, such as presentations, seminars, training sessions and other functions. A screen and audio-visual equipment is available for organisers. There is also a spacious bar adjacent to the Restaurant and Lounge. at The Royal Western as the club holds a wedding licence. Smaller ceremonies of up to 25 guests can be held in the club’s elegant Dolphin Room that overlooks the Queen Anne’s Battery marina. The club’s functions manager Claire Adams said: “We offer a completely bespoke weddings or functions package which allows the bride and groom or event organisers to choose exactly what they want - rather than a fixed-price promotion. “We have an enthusiastic team with experience of countless events and scores of weddings under their belt. We are committed to making the couple’s big day wonderfully unforgettable. “Many couples find that having their ceremony and reception in one venue is hassle-free as there are fewer suppliers to deal with. Having the same supportive and qualified team certainly takes away a lot of the stress.”

The Royal Western Yacht Club The club’s talented chefs Paul Kirk and David Stevens provide a wide selection of menu choices offering a mix-andmatch selection to suit the required budget. Club secretary Jacqui Avery, who is one of the volunteer members of the Royal Western’s board of directors, said that they were keen to attract more business from corporate customers, weddings and other functions. “We have wonderful facilities, plenty of free parking space and offer a location and surroundings that are steeped in tradition,” she said. “Few organising bodies in international sport can claim to have been founded nearly 190 years ago. Our patron is the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne opened our current clubhouse in Queen Anne’s Battery in 1989.” The club was originally founded as the Port of Plymouth

steeped in history and tradition Royal Clarence Regatta Club in 1827 and became the Royal Western six years later. Over the years, the club has occupied a number of premises, including at one time the site of the current Waterfront Restaurant. In 1837 the club occupied its first clubhouse near Millbay docks, moved to Elliott Terrace in 1866 then to the Hoe (next door to the Grand Hotel) in 1882. This building was destroyed, along with all the Club’s silver and historical records, in the bombing of 1941. The Club had used the former West Hoe Baths and Reading Room on Grand Parade since 1890 and a new building was opened there by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1965. Sir Francis Chichester was a member of the club at the time of his record-breaking single-handed exploits and Winston Churchill was at one time the club’s Commodore.

Jacqui said: “Plymouth has been the traditional starting point for the voyages of Sir Francis Drake, Captain James Cook and many other great seafarers, so it is hardly surprising that the world’s first ocean race, the Fastnet, has been sailed under the Royal Western Yacht Club flag since 1925. “The Fastnet remains one of the ocean racing classics for fully-crewed yachts and the club has been instrumental in organising the finish of the race ever since it was started.” She said the club continues to promote the Observer Single-Handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR) and the Round Britain and Ireland Race. “While remain essentially a club for sailors and those involved with sailing, we are always very pleased to host a whole range of functions.”

Muscovado: the not-so-sweet story of the sugar slave trade A searing new play about slavery in 1800s Barbados is coming to Plymouth as part of a tour of UK cities with links to the transatlantic slave trade. Muscovado is BurntOut Theatre’s scorching new play about slavery in nineteenth century Barbados, written by emerging playwright Royal Court alumnus Matilda Ibini. A heady mix of sexual intrigue, piercing choral music and extreme racial tension, Muscovado provides an unflinching portrayal of life on a sugar plantation in 1808, accompanied by original music and atmospheric soundscape performed live by the cast. Muscovado will be performed on April 19 and 20 at Stoke Damerel Church, Plymouth as part of a tour visiting 15 cities around the UK with links to the transatlantic slave trade, including Hull, Bristol and Liverpool; theatres and site-specific venues to include Danson House and The Carriageworks, Leeds as well as Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Set between the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act and the Abolition of slavery, Muscovado tells the interconnected stories of a planter family and their slaves, shedding light on the British involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Muscovado was commissioned by BurntOut Theatre following the discovery of archives relating to artistic director Clemmie Reynolds’s family, who lived in Barbados in 1800s. Emerging Nigerian playwright Matilda Ibini recently became the youngest winner of the BBC Writersroom10 Award, is supported by a Prince William scholarship including mentoring by BAFTA, and is Soho Theatre’s Writer-inResidence. Muscovado was first staged in 2014 at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and as part of Black History Month in the Clapham church where William Wilberforce campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade, gaining four-star reviews and sell-out performances. The play was developed with historical support from slave trade expert Steve Martin, script development with Young Vic Theatre, and financial support from Arts Council England. “An absolute scorcher...overwhelmingly compelling” London Theatre “Stirring. This isn’t theatre for the faint-hearted. Go if you can.” FemaleArts.com

Carmen in Plymouth For the third time in its history Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship is departing from its traditional G&S production to instead present Bizet’s opera Carmen. The Plymouth Fellowship, founded in 1923, is the oldest company of its kind in the country, predating even the National Gilbert and Sullivan Society. In its 92 year history Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship has, in addition to numerous concerts for charity, produced 93 full productions at various theatres, including more than 20 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. Now the award-winning company is to demonstrate its talents with the world renowned opera Carmen by Georges Bizet, which features famous pieces such as The Toreador’s Song, the Habanera and the Flower aria in a score full of soaring romantic melodies. In the leading roles are well-known mezzo Helen Haviland as Carmen, Indian-born tenor Anando Mukerjee as Don Jose, local lyric baritone Ray Gilley as Escamillo and soprano Bianca Phillips as Micaela. Also featuring in key supporting roles are soprano Kim Willcocks as Frasquita, soprano Lindy Stephens as Mercedes and bass-baritone Peter Clement, who was the winner of the best character actor category at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, as Zuniga. The production is directed by Alan Spencer, renowned for his acclaimed productions at Buxton and Harrogate International G&S Festivals and will feature a full orchestra under the musical direction of Jane Warwick. The production is being performed at Devonport Playhouse Plymouth and runs evenings from May 19 to May 22 with a matinee performance only on Saturday 23 at 2.30pm

From Friday May 1 to Sunday May 31, the festival aims to celebrate and highlight as many different aspects of the city’s unique history and heritage as possible. Since it’s launch in 2013, the Festival has featured more than 250 events which have been enjoyed by thousands of local residents and visitors. More than 100 different events are already confirmed for this year’s festival. With exhibitions and displays, guided tours, talks and walks, food, drink music, performance and open days and special events, the festival collaborates with a huge variety of venues ranging from church halls and guildhalls to country houses and historic properties, from museums and galleries to archives and libraries. Last year’s festival celebrated the 100th anniversary of the amalgamation of ‘The Three Towns’, yet despite this year not having a set theme, the festival aims to celebrate the long, colourful history of the city of Plymouth. With a massive list of events in store for the festival, the festival brings a variety of historical activities together during the one month, although the heritage of the City is something that can and should be celebrated all year round. The festival caters for all ages and interests, with family activities including treasure hunts, quizzes, mystery tours, workshops and fun craft activities. Local organisations have been busy pulling together and confirming their event details since late 2014. The programme includes exhibitions and displays, talks and presentations, behind-the-scenes tours, guided walks, family-friendly activities and a series of special events and open days. A new category featuring events that are food, drink, music and performance-based has also been introduced for 2015. More events will be added to the festival programme as they are confirmed. Many of the events are free although a number require advance booking. Full booking and admission details can be found on the website. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Every year I’m astounded at the

APRIL EVENTS variety in the History Festival programme as well as the number of events it inspires local organisations, venues and societies to offer. “The festival caters for all ages and interests and events are held in many different locations, not just in the city centre but also around the waterfront and throughout the suburbs. It‘s a real achievement for a city to create such an extensive programme. I‘m sure this year‘s festival will be just as successful as the last.” Having been given a cash injection last year of over £44,000, it’s allowed the event to grow. This has allowed for the restoration of two memorial plaques, the creation of a war memorial trail and the commissioning of a photographic archive project plus much more. This year, families can enjoy the Plymouth Pirate Weekend, taking place on the Barbican and Sutton Harbour, complete with real pirates, Blitz walks and talks presented by Hidden Heritage and the History Flower Festival at the St Andrew’s Minister Church on Royal Parade, recalling the garden church of 70 years ago. The festival is just one part of the ‘love our past’ scheme, a £24m Plymouth History Centre, transforming the existing museum on North Hill into a cutting-edge cultural centre, three times its existing size. It will create a major new visitor attraction in the city that will proudly bring life to the city’s rich history and celebrate our legends and heroes.

Some of the best items Lockdales have auctioned were brought to them at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which were later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items Lockdales have sold recently was a fragment of a pennant flag belonging to the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Lockdales sold it at auction on behalf of its owner for £2800

TRAINING MATTERS

Building skills for the future Thousands of young building trade apprentices are set to be trained in the coming years at a new £2.5 million multidiscipline unit at Langage Science Park in Plympton. The Skills Group complex at the previously derelict 118 call centre will provide national standard apprenticeship training in a range of trades such as carpentry, plastering, painting and decorating, bricklaying, and flooring and fenestration. As well as practical training areas, the building also has classrooms for theory lessons. With new developments planned for Plymouth and neighbouring areas, Plymouth City Council predicts that around 10,000 new construction workers are needed during the next 10 years. Managing director of Skills Group, Mark Boulting, said the new facility in Western Wood Way would see 750 new apprentices passing through the doors each year: “This is a huge investment by us,” he told the Plymouth Magazine. “Three years ago our other training site here at Langage received a Grade 1 Ofsted report which means we are in the top 2% in the country. We wanted to make sure the quality of our facilities and teaching were maintained and even improved, so we have made this huge investment in the new site. “We’re now ready to provide the next generation of skilled people,” he added. “We are the largest construction apprenticeship provider in the area and our facility will go quite some way towards ensuring that employers have qualified and skilled workers as we enter a really busy time in the industry. “The biggest problem has been that young people have been choosing university rather than vocational training, hence the current crisis point in the construction industry.” There are 20 tutors at the new centre and 20 assessors who work with employers to check the apprenticeship work at the development sites is of national standard.

46\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2015

Around a quarter of the new apprentices go straight to the Skills Group unit from school to learn the disciplines they need to be employed, such as time-keeping, interview skills and how to complete job applications. The rest are already employed as apprentices at local firms and attend additional training at the Skills Group. Most of the apprentices will work their way up to Level 3 over a two to three year period, with one day each week spent at the training unit. Breakfast is provided to make sure the apprentices start the day with a meal and it’s an added incentive for arriving in good time. The training for 16-18-year-olds is fully funded by the Government, while employers pay their wages. For older apprentices, there are employers’ contributions towards the training and grants are also available from the Construction Industry Training Board. Among those learning their trade is 22-year-old apprentice carpenter Luke Smith. Luke works for a local carpentry business and says the additional training is a big help: “It’s helping me to develop my skills at a much faster rate,” said Carpenter Luke Smith

Luke. “Working in the controlled environment is very helpful and the classroom work is teaching me things over and above the practical stuff. “The teaching is excellent it’s great to have all the equipment and tools under one roof.” Nick Prowse, 17, is an apprentice plasterer who works for a Dartmouth-based firm: “I’m learning things at work but coming here for training as well is definitely improving my skills.” Mr Boulting said this is the perfect time for young people to choose a career in the construction industry: “The earning potential is high for construction trades and apprentices can start earning as soon as they leave school. “Because demand has risen so dramatically in recent months – it’s gone up by about 50% - and because there is a shortage of skilled workers, employers have to offer well paid apprenticeships in order to get candidates. So this is an excellent time to look at the construction industry as a career. “There are lots of developments ahead for Plymouth such as Millbay as well as the Sherford community that is being built just down the road from here, so it’s also a good time for firms to be taking on apprentices.” www.cornerstonevision.com

TRAVEL MATTERS

All you need to know about dressing up for your cruise

EXMINSTER CARPETS

Cruising has become one of the most popular type of holidays in recent years. There has never been such a vast choice of cruise lines, ships and itineraries on offer as there is now and cruises are available at prices to suit the pocket of every traveller. The cruise companies are very keen to attract ‘first time cruisers’ in the knowledge that once you’ve travelled, there is a very good chance that you will cruise again and again. By Travel We handle a significant number of Expert cruise bookings at Peter Goord Travel Anthony Goord and many of these are for clients trying their first ever cruise. Without doubt, the main question asked about cruises is ‘what is the dress code on the ship?’ This month I will try and clarify details of the dress code guidelines set out by the main cruise lines, hopefully making it easier for you to decide which will suit you best.

Undoubtedly the most popular choice of cruise line for holidaymakers in the South West as many of their cruises sail directly from Southampton and don’t involve any flights. P&O customers need to be aware of the different dress codes for various dining events. After 6pm, shorts or worn denim are not considered appropriate for men or women in public areas, while sandals and sleeveless tops are considered inappropriate for men. For P&O ‘evening casual’ nights, casual separates and dresses are the suggested attire for ladies, while open-neck polo shirts and trousers are suggested for gents. Smart denim is also acceptable but no trainers, football shirts or tracksuits. On some P&O ships, there are also ‘smart–jacket required’ evenings. On these occasions women wear tailored trousers,

separates or a dress whereas men are expected to wear a shirt and trousers with a jacket or suit and tie. On a typical 14-night cruise there are normally four of these ‘smart evenings’. Black tie nights call for cocktail dresses, ball gowns or smart trouser suits for women and jackets, tuxedos, dark lounge or business suits and ties for men. It is obviously not expected that children should have to adhere to these rules and they are permitted to wear casual clothes at all times apart from denim on the black tie and smart evenings.

Fred Olsen

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines have streamlined the dress code across its fleet. The traditional black tie nights typically take place on three or four evenings during a two week cruise and the dress code remains formal but for other evenings the dress code is ‘smart casual’. For men, this means a jacket and tie or open-necked shirt, with chinos or smart dark jeans and for women, an elegant dress or casual separates. Fred Olsen will occasionally also offer themed nights where passengers are welcome to wear fancy dress, costumes appropriate to the theme or simply adopt the ‘smart casual ‘dress code. There are also other specific occasions when Fred Olsen invites passengers to dress up – such as the Captain’s Welcome Cocktail Party but attendance is optional.

Royal Caribbean International

To choose a dress code, you firstly need to choose a restaurant on board Royal Caribbean ships. These vessels are so large with so much choice that you can be as formal or as informal as you wish! The best example of this is on board the ‘Quantum of the Seas’ or ‘Anthem of the Sea’, both of which have an incredible 18 restaurants with at least seven of these being classed as ‘laid –back options’ serving food around the clock. Restaurants such as Jonny Rockets Diner, Marketplace and Windjammer don’t have any dress code so many passengers take advantage of the opportunity to dress more casually to enjoy lunch or dinner at these venues. For those who enjoy dressing up or perhaps want to mark a special occasion, formal dress is encouraged in ‘The Grande Restaurant’; for this occasion most gentlemen will wear a smart suit or tux and ladies tend to wear cocktail dresses. Some special nights are advertised and hosted where smarter dress is encouraged but it can be avoided by dining in one of the more casual restaurants.

Princess Cruises

Most Princess Cruises include at least two formal nights so passengers can enjoy both glamorous outfits and more relaxed attire. On formal nights, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, tailored trousers and smart separates are advised for women, • continued on next page

TRAVEL MATTERS • continued from previous page while tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits would be suitable for men. Apart from these occasions, the dress code in the main dining room is simply smart casual. Princess Cruises request that you dress as you would when dining out at a nice restaurant at home. Their guidelines advise trousers or smart jeans and an open-neck shirt for gents and skirts, dresses or trousers for the ladies.

Cunard

Cunard’s dress codes are quite extensive and vary according to the destination and ship itself - guests are encouraged to refer to their online guide for more details. During the day the dress code is relaxed across all three ships but evenings are divided mainly into two types of dress code. Formal nights stipulate an evening or cocktail dress or trouser suit for women and a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dinner suit for men. For the informal evenings, just a jacket is required for men and a cocktail dress or smart separates for women. Clients who prefer not to wear the more ‘dressy’ attire required on formal nights can dress more casually and dine in either the Kings Court or Lido restaurants.

Celebrity Cruises

Two types of dress code are suggested: ‘smart casual and above’ and ‘formal’. Examples of ‘smart casual and above’ include a skirt or trousers complemented by a sweater or blouse for women and trousers with a sports shirt with

sleeves or a sweater for men. A cocktail dress, gown or dressy trouser suit is suitable formal wear for ladies and a tuxedo, suit or dinner jacket with trousers is suitable for men. Guests are asked to follow the ‘smart casual and above’ dress code in the Celebrity Theatre for all evening performances. I’ve tried to choose a selection of cruise lines offering different sized vessels and varying standards when giving the information above. However, you will have gathered that overall there tends to be two options with most companies – either informal/casual or formal, sometimes black tie. It is important to remember that these dress codes are only meant to be guidelines and can differ according to the season or where the ship is cruising. For example, P&O tend to be more relaxed about the dress code for passengers cruising the Caribbean in winter than they do about their summer cruises from Southampton. It is also worth mentioning that on most of the large cruise lines, there is always a buffet restaurant (normally open 24 hours), where casual dining is the norm. Therefore, if you enjoy cruising but you are not one who likes to dress up, you don’t have to! Happy Cruising!

have been shown to have a dramatic impact on the treatment of decay. We also use fissure sealants when treating adult patients as this can halt further decay. “Most decay on the adult back teeth starts on the biting surface and fissure sealants are a safe and effective way of protecting teeth. They provide a plastic coating that forms a smooth protective layer by covering the little grooves and dips on the surface of the tooth.” John said that as part of its ongoing dental health campaign the practice had also invested in a state of the art Aquacut Quattro air abrasion machine which uses air pressure, powder and liquid to help make cleaning even very sensitive teeth painless. “This treatment leads to cleaner, brighter and healthier teeth,” said John. “As well as polishing it is designed to replace the ‘drill’ in the treatment of small tooth cavities by removing only decayed tooth structure resulting in significantly smaller fillings. It is proving extremely popular with our patients,” he added. The practice has not only invested in technology, but also in people. A new dentist, Jon Victor and two dental nurses, Marie Carty and Iona Davies, have joined the practice, which has enabled it to open on Saturday from 9am to 2pm as well as 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays. The new team members join the existing five staff at Pemros. Practice manager and dental care nurse Sarah Victor has been with John since he launched the practice 18 years ago, while Sarah Foran is the other dental care nurse on the team. Hygienist Sue Hunt is a highly qualified and dedicated dental hygienist while the practice also employs part-time receptionists Mary-Anne Farrington and Madeleine Spencer.

Affordable housing development in Mannamead

Cllr Chris Penberthy (yellow helment) shows the artist’s visual of the new development at the former Mannamead Centre with Richard Pillar, chairman of Pillar Land Securities, the developer

Work is about to start on a new development of nearly 30 homes on the site of a former community centre, including affordable and energy efficient homes.

The development of the former Mannamead Centre at Eggbuckland Road will offer 29 new houses including 13 affordable homes using the RentPlus model which provides tenants with a new way of eventually buying their own home. The site is being developed by Pillar Land Securities Ltd and the new homes will exceed energy requirements. It will be the first RentPlus site in Plymouth and one of the first in the country. Plymouth City Council brought the site forward for housing development under the Get Plymouth Building programme. All the homes are to be built to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and renewable energy will be generated by solar photovoltaic panels. Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives, Housing and Community Safety for Plymouth City Council, said: “The site at the former Mannamead Centre forms part of our Get Plymouth Building programme which aims to help increase and accelerate the delivery of new and greener homes in the city. “It also provides much needed affordable housing in the city. Compared with the national picture we have lower levels of owner occupation and higher levels of private renting in Plymouth. Many young people are still finding it difficult to buy their first home in the city, with the average age of first time buyers now around 37. In Plymouth, 40 per cent of households earn less than £20,000 a year, while the cheapest homes in the city cost an eye-watering 6.3 times the lowest salary. “I was particularly impressed by the approach by the applicants, Pillar Land Securities, to engaging and consulting with local residents throughout the planning application process. “Housing is unaffordable for people on low incomes, there

He has just released a book called Images-Within-Images in Italian Painting (1250 – 1350) Reality and Reflexivity. I caught up with him in the Reservoir Café on the university campus to find out more. I asked Peter how long the book had taken to write and compile. He told me: “About ten years. I started to work on it as an undergraduate, so it originated as an academic By assignment. My PhD was based around the same subject. I studied at an American University in Hungary which was accredited in the US. The finished book is almost 100,000 words and contains 90 illustrations.” We discussed what it means to have images within images. Peter explained: “If you take a modern day TV series. There might be a moment when a character enters a room expressing something while a TV is on in that same room showing something that relates to the scene. “So, image within image is a way of putting extra layers of meaning into a piece of art.” Peter told me that Italian painters of the 1300s presented much of their art in such a manner. On the cover of his book there is an image of an old lady sitting down with a fresco of the crucifixion behind her. The painting can be found in Assisi, close to the tomb of St Francis from which the Franciscan religious order originates.

Kerry Cole

Image within an image...photographer Roy Perring’s interpretation of Dr Peter Bodoky’s subject

The lady in the painting represents the virtue of obedience and the depiction of Christ on the cross behind her, signifies His example of being obedient to His Father even unto death. So, there is a connection between the main scene of the figure of obedience and the crucifixion. Peter said: “There is a painting of Jesus with Mary Magdalene which has an image within image on the tomb behind them. The scene in the tomb is of Daniel in the lion’s den from the Old Testament. The meaning clearly indicates a comparison - as Daniel was delivered out of the mouth of the lion, so Christ was delivered up from death in the resurrection.” I was fascinated to hear the deeper meanings that can be found in these pieces of art. Peter told me that Plymouth University are bringing in a new module on their Art History course on images-within-images from the middle-ages up to today. Students will compare frescoes, oil paintings, photography and film. Colum Hourihane, says of Peter’s book, ‘Engagingly written, this study will add significantly to our understanding of Giotto and his circle (including Lorenzetti, Gaddi and Daddi) in the dynamically changing world of fourteenth century Italy. “Although primarily concerned with images within images in panel and mural painting, the work goes beyond its initial parameters and looks at such concepts as realism, spatial relations, illusionism, meta-painting, self-reflexivity, time and reception in Italian art. It is a study which exposes the viewer to new ideas and details that could easily be passed and whose iconography is significant in understanding the work in its entirety.”

Washing down the outside areas is an annual chore for many householders but it needn’t be, according to Neil Hurst of Plympton-based All Drives Cleaned. Neil’s drive and patio cleaning business is part of his Plymouth Decking and Landscaping firm which he established 20 years ago in 1995. Using the most effective equipment, Neil can get your drive and patio looking as good as new and seal it so that you don’t have to worry about having it cleaned again for another three to five years. And, unlike DIY pressure washers that can take days to complete the task, Neil and his rotary cleaner will get the job done perfectly in a fraction of the time, whether it’s block paving, imprinted concrete, decking or tarmac. “April is a great time for a spring clean outdoors,” said Neil, “and with block paving, the cleaning really has to be done between then and September because you need reliable drying time to come back to sand and seal on following days.” The biggest enemy to outdoor areas is rain, and with plenty of that guaranteed each winter, it makes sense to protect those areas as much as possible. Neil said: “Every outdoor surface, whatever it is, will get dirty by water and slippery as well. Block drives can be dirty at any time because the kilndried sand between the blocks, unless it’s sealed, attracts moss, weeds and general dirt.” The answer, says Neil, is to have the block surface cleaned, re-sanded and then sealed: “That will enhance the colour of the block and give it UV protection so the dye doesn’t fade in the sun. The resin in the seal also sets the sand solid so weeds can’t penetrate. This sort of a clean makes a 10-yearold driveway look new again.” The Whirl Away rotary head cleaner ensures a streak-free, even removal of dirt and makes the surface non-slip again.

Left: Neil Hurst

And it only uses water, so no chemicals are needed. For decking, Neil recommends it is oiled again after cleaning to enhance and protect the wood. And he warns against colouring the decking, as it is very difficult to ensure even coverage. With imprinted concrete, Neil repairs and renews so that the grime and blemishes are totally removed and he can add an anti-slip into the second sealant to make the surface safe again. Tarmaseal is used to repair cracked and worn tarmac and Neil said: “After it’s been rollered, it looks like a brand new drive.” A 300 square metre driveway with block paving takes Neil seven hours to clean, compared to a week for someone using a pressure washer lance. “And you’d be back again next year doing it all again,” said Neil. He added: “People are amazed at the difference the

cleaning makes. Because the dirt and grime builds up over time they don’t notice it until they see the contrast of before and after. It just brightens the whole place up.” With Neil’s background in landscaping, he takes special care to make sure any surrounding plants or flowers are not affected by the work.

GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE

Calling all learner

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre We are increasingly being asked by new and novice gardeners what can they grow in their small space and plots and how to grow it. So we have decided to reach out all you budding learner gardeners and give you some simple 30 minute projects that will have you reaping the rewards to come at cropping time! Everyone can grow potatoes, even in just a potato bag! It’s just like imagining a large club sandwich - only with compost and potatoes! What you will need: • Seed potatoes. Choose a variety you will use and cook with. International Kidney is a good all-rounder and reliable variety. It is the variety famously grown in Jersey’s warm and rich soil. • A potato growing bag - which is re-usable again and again! • Good quality compost - I recommend using Westland’s Multipurpose compost with added John Innes, or Jacks Magic. • Some fertiliser - Westland’s Chicken Manure pellets will be suitable. What to do: • Lay your seed potatoes on a sunny window ledge for a week or two to develop small shoot. This is called chitting and allows you to see which way up to plant your potatoes and allows them to grow faster. • Open the potato growing bag and fill 1/3 of it with the compost. • Place 4 or 5 of the seed potatoes on top of the compost with the shots pointing up. • Scatter a handful of the chicken manure pellets around the potatoes. • Cover the seed potatoes with 10cm (4ins) of compost. • Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 again. • Fill the growing bag to the top with the compost, leaving room to allow for watering. Firm the compost with your hands. • Water the bag and keep it moist, but not water logged

throughout the growing season. • Place the bag in a sunny position and enjoy your very own home grown potatoes from around June. Let’s grow herbs in a trough or pot. It is easy and rewarding. Your favourite dishes will taste 10 times better with the flavours and aroma of freshly cut herbs from your own crop. There is nothing quite like freshly picked parsley sprinkled over boiled potatoes and butter or a spring of mint with freshly picked strawberries and cream. You’ll wonder what took you so long to get started, What you will need: • A trough or pot with drainage holes - Terracotta is excellent for herbs. • Choose your herbs - Grow herbs that you will use regularly and for best results, grow herbs that have similar growing requirements. • Compost - I’d recommend John Innes No.2. • Mulch - Horticultural grit makes a great mulch for herbs. A ½ inch layer on the top of the pot keeps moisture in, weeds out and allows excess water to drain away. • Suitable fertiliser - Miracle Gro Slow Release feed is great for herbs. It slowly feeds for up to six months with one application. What to do: • Take your trough or pot and line the bottom of it with a layer of gravel or grit for drainage. • Fill ¾ of the pot with John Innes No.2 compost. • Mix a handful of slow release fertiliser with the compost. • Mix a handful of grit with the compost for extra drainage if growing Mediterranean herbs. • Plant the herbs in the pot or the trough equal distance apart, so they have room to grow without crowding each other. • Fill the rest of the pot with the compost, leaving a 3.5cm (1½ ins) gap from the rim. • Cover the surface of the compost with a 1.25cm (½in) layer of horticultural grit, leaving a 2.5cm (1in) gap from the rim for watering. • Water and enjoy.

You can make your enquiry online alldrivescleaned.co.uk • plymouthdecking.co.uk plymouthdecking@gmail.com What herbs to grow together: • Chives, Parsley, Coriander, and Tarragon like full sun but moist soil. • Sage, Thyme, Rosemary and Oregano/Marjoram are Mediterranean herbs and like full sun and drier soils. • Mint is vigorous and fast growing, so for a bumper crop of mint grow it alone or with two other varieties in a pot if you like your mint fresh and tasty. Mint likes damp soil and partial shade. Let’s grow strawberries in a pot. The joy of growing strawberries is a simple one, the taste! Once you have grown your own strawberries and tried them, you’ll never go back to shop bought ones. The flavour and the sweetest is superior and delicious. The question shouldn’t be how do I grow my own strawberries, it should be why aren’t I growing my own strawberries? They are the easiest fruit to grow! What you will need: • A tomato grow bag is great and for growing strawberries in, but if you prefer to grow them in a pot they’ll do just as well. Preferably one 30cm (12ins) or more in diameter. • Good quality compost - unless growing in a grow bag. I’d recommend Westland’s Multipurpose with added John Innes or Miracle Gro Moisture Control compost. • Strawberry plants - Choose a variety you like. My go to variety and favourite is Cambridge Favourite. It has medium sized, sweet tasting fruit that produces a bumper crop throughout the summer. • A fertiliser - Tomato feed is perfect for strawberries. What to do: • Prepare your pot by filling it ¾ full with the compost. If using a grow bag, fluff it up like a pillow to loosen the compost.
